DP thoughts about food

So i was recalling how in DP the food the Fentons made or had in their freezer was canonically always ecto-contaminated for some reason or another. And thought it would have been awful to grow up feeling unsafe with your own food. I’m guessing either Danny or Jazz could have developed some kind of eating disorder thanks to this, like, they have to be careful their own food won’t come back to life to try and eat them in turn or make them sick! Not even bc they have a condition like lactose intolerance or allergies but BC THEIR FOOD ITSELF IS THE PROBLEM

so im imagining that post-accident, Jazz is still as careful as she can be and tries to keep an eye on her little brother who has recently cared less and less, she has even seen him almost eat the contaminated food! She is very surprised he hasn’t ran to the bathroom to throw up one of these days.

One day, the day right before Jazz’s revelation of his brother’s identity, is when it happens.

Their mom and dad are out and they have unearthed (Danny’s words) the remains of a pizza they didn’t finish a couple days ago. Jazz goes to the kitchen to make a couple of iced teas (beginning of summer sucks, also Danny’s words) but when she comes back two things happen in quick succession: first, the pepperoni pizza that has apparently been fine until now reveals to be ecto contaminated and suddenly comes back to life when her brother is about to take a bite, only to moan, roar and try to attack Danny in that order. But then, her baby brother HISSES and SNARLS at the thing (and is the sound coming from his mouth or his chest?!?!?!?) with wild abandon and makes it cower into submission before he takes not just a bite but several and devours it with an anger he hasn’t displayed in…well, ever?

Jazz stands there for a while until Danny notices her, and flinches. Then he scratches the back of his neck trying to look as casual as he can

“Er…it seems the pizza is not okay…?”

“you think?” She says, and puts the tea in the table, acting like she hasn’t just seen her brother eat said pizza

she will get to the bottom of this later on, but for now she is just wildly confused, not to mention, EXTREMELY CONCERNED

y'know... for a setting that places so much importance in Language and does so many ice cool things playing with it (Correspondence/Discordance, Parabola & Irem, etc) i think there's a bit of a missed opportunity when it comes to the terms and words people use in their day to day life... like for example:

do you think radical revolutionaries would avoid words like "enlightening" in their vocabulary and flip them for LON-appropriate counterparts to signal their beliefs?

like substituting the word "light" with "blight". lol

similarly, pet names relating to light like "sunshine" kinda have a whole extra flavour tied to them, leaning into nostalgia, melancholy and/or danger depending on the people using it. irony, even

"honey" as a pet name also has extra connotations now and might actually bother some people instead due to the association with the drug...

do you think SMEN, taboo as it is, and seeking being a recognizable phenomenon even to the common londoner, would spawn swear words and insults? (imagine the weight of telling someone to Go Seek or Fall Down a Well)

the word "well" itself. well as an adverb, interjection, adjective. just. think about it. think about what it represents. idk something is happening to this word for sure

I want. Four to get appreciation. Because

Four gave a ton of unnoticed help when Twilight was injured

The fight with Wild was difficult, and I know we're all concerned about his negative view of the shadow crystal

But Four did something that no one else really thought of to help- He took care of Twi's stuff

From the beginning he told Twilight to not worry about them

So Four took care of pretty much everything but the others (that Sky and Wars handled)

He took care of Epona

Which is so very important- he took care of Twilight's horse. After her arrival at the stable Four followed up on her

And for Epona, a horse so attached to her human, having some company can help so much for reassurance

He took care of Twilight's stuff

He got Twi's shield- his bags and equipment, and organized it into one place

And he was worried. He obviously found the shadow crystal while handling Twi's stuff, but his negative reactions to it were out of concern.

Also- because of his placement in this scene

I'm fairly convinced Four was ready to start cooking before Wild showed up (since he's beside the counter with food supplies). At the very least he had the basket of fruit out for everyone -but he was literally standing with food behind him- he thought of everything

And he did housekeeping!

Wars payed for the inn, so Four took care of the inn

Realistically these boys were probably not too concerned with tidyness. Four got all of Twi's things on one table, and took care of the room they stayed in

Organizing tables and Twi's things, having food supplies ready, and opening the curtains- overall he was the one tidying up the inn

Four helped in a huge way! He took care of Twi's horse (Epona is so important), his equipment and shield and bag, as well as the other rooms in the inn

Four filled in all the little tasks that others didn't think of. He helped in ways that were needed, but not obvious

There's a lot of problems with the shadow crystal and with Wild, and I don't know what's gonna happen in the future

But don't forget this- don't forget that Four was one who stepped up in an almost unnoticeable way

Don't forget that when everyone was barely holding it together, Four visited Twilight's horse and took care of his things

No matter what develops in the future- this amount of care shown is important ya know?

something i find interesting with linked universe fanfic that i don’t think is talked about enough, if at all, starts with how peoples’ characterizations of wild can vary drastically depending on if they think memories make a person. if wild has memories from the past, does that make him the same as the link from a hundred years ago? if he doesn’t have all of them and didn't always have them, is he a different person entirely? does he think he’s a different person, or does he not? is he a strange amalgamation of the two, being both past and current link, neither here nor there? where do you draw the line? do memories make a person or don’t they? 

but the part i feel people don’t acknowledge ends with: isn’t it the same question when it comes to sun?

I think there is an inherent evil in the fact that P.E. really sends their freighters out with limited food supplies and commodifies sweets/treats.

Not a lot of people are familiar with sugar and the value it had when it came to labors but it was expensive and treated as a luxury. Sugar was a sign of being comfortable and prosperity and even wealth as you could afford to get it and use it in abundance. There's definitely something to be discussed that Curly, who doesn't really care for sweets, was offered the one luxury item they are allotted and the fact the sweetener packets are addictive and a reoccurring device in the game.

It is used as a reward but also to mask the bitter reality or taste of a lot of the events. The mouthwash has just enough sugar to cover the ethanol hence why Swansea drinks so much of it, but has to much to be a disinfectant, only hurting Daisuke more (note he loves sugar). The cake is awarded for Curly and made by him, someone who doesn't care for confections, and serving it commences the bitter reveal of their firing. Jimmy gets Daisuke to use an extra sweetener packet to cover up the extra alcohol in the mocktail and we know where that leads.

At the end when there is no more sugar to cover up the bitter things, we taste the horrors clear as day. They were always a lingering bitter taste in the games story but at the end that's all that's there.
