after skimming the homestuck wiki, i'm pretty sure that the hashmap modus turns the letters of an object's name into a number that gets stored in the corresponding slot, and synonyms can change what slot it goes into. there are some differences from the alt code system:

there are no numbered slots to speak of when casting spells. there isn't even an inventory. you just cast the spells.

hashmap takes an entire word or phrase and turns it into a number, while we take numbers and turn them into individual letters.

these letters aren't even in modern english, either. i don't think there's ever been a situation in homestuck where dave had to use a non-english letter to store something, and it probably wouldn't be compatible with any of the methods of turning the letters into a number since those seem to only be built for modern english letters.

also, alt codes have been around for far longer than homestuck, so even if those were used in homestuck, that would mean that alt codes aren't a homestuck reference, but that homestuck references alt codes.

Game idea: you've got a series of spells you can use, which you cast by typing them.

But enemy bosses can attack your keyboard. Your "E" key is disabled. FIREBALL is out. ICE9? Also out. Guess they're getting hit with SUMMON FROG.

The bosses can also drop traps on your keys. So if N is trapped, you can cast SUMMON FROG, but the N-trap will go off and you'll take damage.

An advanced late game spell is THESAURUS, which lets you reanalyze a spell. Can't do SUMMON NIGHT WOLF because your N key is broken? THESAURUS it and now it's CREATE DARK DOG.

Another enemy attack would be putting a counter on your keys. So if they put a 1 on your R, you can cast "FIREBALL" but "CIRCLE OF TERROR" is right out.

The two can be combined: a trapped counter only goes off if you type more than the counter. So a trapped 2 on your S means "HEAL SELF" is fine but "TRANSFORM SELF TO SERPENT" will activate the trap and you'll take damage.

One late game boss attacks you by cutting your keyboard in half, and which half works alternates between turns. You gotta figure out which spells you can use that turn.

You could do some fun gimmick-fights. Like a boss sweeps your keyboard off the table and makes you play scrabble instead: you have to spell spells to cast them.

Or wheel of fortune, where you have to get enough money to be able to buy vowels before you can cast spells with vowels in them. The puzzle on the board is a spell the boss is going to cast against you, so it's also a fight against time. If you correctly guess too many letters, they'll solve and you'll get hit with the spell.

I think the way it works is that you fight some mooks and then a boss, and each boss has a new spell they can cast against you.

But you can cast any spell you've seen used against you, so like you start with merely FIREBALL but the first boss hits you with HIGH JUMP, and now you can use that ability out of battle, cause it's a metroidvania of course, and now new areas are accessible.

But bosses can use "forbidden" spells against you, and they do it by typing words you can't.

Like the viking boss hits you with a OÄNDLIG FJÄRIL and you don't have that letter.

(later you can upgrade your keyboard to get access to some forbidden letters, but at great cost: you must sacrifice a letter to gain it, and you don't get to pick which letter the keyboard surgeon will take)

And this isn’t the only one. People make comments like this about Stolas (and other fictional effeminate gay men) all the time. Worse, they make comments like this about real people!!! It just happens more in fandom spaces because its safer to project bigoted views onto fictional characters without the worry of push back. The issue is, you share these spaces with real people. You share these spaces with real gender non conforming gay/queer men who will see these comments.

Not only that, but the way you engage with minority characters can sometimes be an expression of internalized biases. Especially if it’s a pattern. Sometimes it’s more explicit, like those ass holes who complain when a person of color is casted in their favorite nerd franchise. Other times it’s more subtle, like consistently being overly critical of characters of color in a way you’re not with white characters.

I know a lot of y’all are young, so I’m going to take this in good faith and explain it to you. Using a word associated with queerness to criticize a person is using coded language.

Coded language consists of seemingly neutral terms that individuals use to negatively describe identity and thus maintain oppressive power structures.

An example of this I saw growing up was Adam Lambert on American Idol. He was closeted to the public, but most people clocked him as a gay man. The judges were constantly saying he couldn’t win because he was too “theatrical”. This was their coded way of saying “too gay” because theatrics, or theater in general, is largely associated with the gay community.

Historically, gender non conforming gay men have been subject to more criticism and outward bigotry than masculine presenting men. Because they’re seen as being a bigger threat to the patriarchy.

(And when I say historically, I mean this was happening in the times of ancient Rome and Greece)

This is why a lot of queer people also feel comfortable using twink in a derogatory way. Because yeah, they might be gay, but they’re not like those weird gays with the winy voice. They see themselves as respectable queers, even if on a subconscious level.

So here’s the rule: if you’re using twink as a synonym for something negative, that’s homophobia. If you’re calling a person a twink while simultaneously insulting them, that’s homophobia. Lastly, if you still don’t buy into what I’m saying, ask yourself why we don’t use terms associated with masculine queerness(like bear) while criticizing people in the same large scale way.

FTL: First, an update on the training of FTLR-3. I am tentatively going to declare it a success. While FTLR-3 is still showing some hesitance to obey my commands, I do believe that that may stem from some sort of... spite? I know for sure that it has thoroughly associated my commands with the receival of more food. I am unsure if this pause is due to it fighting its instincts, or whether it is truly just to throw me off. Perhaps I am simply being paranoid again. Either way, I have to be satisfied with the progress I have made thus far: my time has run out. More on that later.

FTL: Second, the modification of the container I will be using to transport FTLR-3. I have reinforced it and made sure that when it's shut, it's completely airtight. Nothing gets in, nothing gets out. FTLR-3 will not be escaping it, especially due to the training that I can only hope will work. I have no guarantee that the container will be as secure as I think it will be, I have no guarantee that FTLR-3 will not disobey me, I have no guarantee that the creature used for the transportation will be fully capable of carrying it all the way there. I can only prepare so much. And as I said, my time has run out.

Log SNS: my theory is that large amounts of purified Void fluid sort of... combine their fractured molecular structure? and that the purification causes the fracturing in the first place. unsure. where do its Ascension abilities go though?
