Da Rulez: How the FUCK does Pokemon Breeding Work? (Breeding 101)

Well, you see…. when two Pokémon love each other very much, an egg magically appears out of nowhere and no one knows where it came from!

Okay, snarky response aside, here’s what’s going on: first, Pokémon don’t have genitals. They don’t have sex, but they do have a sex, sort of, sometimes. When two Pokémon mate, what is actually going on is that they are combining magical energies together to create a new being, which takes the form of an egg. Almost all Pokémon start off as an egg, though there are a handful of striking exceptions such as Minior and certain gods/eldritch beings.

But Professor Redwood, I’m confused, you talk about gestation periods for Pokémon but how can there be pregnancies if there’s nothing to be pregnant with? I AM CONFUSION! AMERICA EXPLAIN!  

This is my step-by-step guide to how Pokémon reproduce:

Step 1.) Courtship: They find a mate that they like.

Step 2.) Mating: Mommy and Daddy Pokémon like each other very much, and then they mutually agree to combine magical energies to create babies. This step is functionally the same as having sex, but there’s no actual sex involved, but the same basic thing is going on. This is the stage where genes and magicks are combined and mixed together to form someone new. This process requires consent from both parties for it to work.

Bi-sexed species can only mate with other bi-sexed species and only with the “opposite sex.”

True mono-sexed species can only mate with other true mono-sexed species.

There are three types of mono-sexed Pokémon

True mono-sex: either parent is equally capable of being the siring or carrying parent. Can only mate with other true mono-sexed species.

Mono-female: can mate with other species but this Pokémon will always be the carrying parent. Can only mate with bi-sexed species

There is seldom any bio-evolutionary or adaptive pressure to develop self-replication, since the males of other bi-sexed species are usually readily available for mating at any time of year.

Mono-male: can mate with other species but this Pokémon will always be the siring parent. Can only mate with bi-sexed species.

(Mono-Male) These Pokémon are capable of self-replication, meaning that they can bear cloned offspring of themselves in absence of a mate. Without "females", this is the species only viable option unless they evolve to be a true mono-sex species.

(Mono-Male) Exceedingly rare. Almost always the result of a species losing its female population and "nature finds a way" allowing the males to self-replicate.

God-tier Pokémon and above can only mate with other God-tier Pokémon and above, except Mew.

Demigod-tier Pokémon and below can only mate with other Demigod-tier Pokémon and below, except for Mew.

Ditto can mate with any Pokémon that is not God-tier or higher on the divinity tier.

Mew can mate with any Pokémon, God, or Eldritch Being or any other divinity tier not otherwise listed. It is the only Pokémon that can do this. Mew are responsible for the creation of many demigods and minor gods and the proliferation of incredibly rare demigod species.

Step 3.) Gestation/Pregnancy: The energies have combined and have begun the process of creating a new individual, but there’s nothing physical to show for this, this stage is entirely intangible because of its lack of physical presence. Meaning, eggs are forming but you can’t actually see anything going on. However, the effects on the carrying parent (usually called the mother) are the same as if they were pregnant. The carrying parent must still acquire extra food, and during this time the invisible magically forming eggs are functionally gestating and taking their toll on their parent’s health and body. During gestation, eggs are gathering magical energy in order to prepare for materialization.

Step 4.) Materialization & Incubation: When its time to “give birth/lay eggs” the eggs will magically materialize from the aether, alleviating the parent of the burden of gestation.  

Step 5.) Birth/Hatching: When the eggs hatch, they glow the same type of glow as when a Pokémon evolves. It’s theorized that we should be considering the egg to be the first stage of Pokémon magic-evolution, but for simplicity’s sake, we do not.

Step 6.) Reproductive Maturity: Pokémon must reach certain developmental milestones before they’re able to combine magical energies with another and create new Pokémon from the aether.

In general, these are the rules-of-thumb for Pokémon reproductive maturity:

 Must be at least level 15

This is because a Pokémon needs to be physically and magically fit enough and developed enough to be able to reproduce. This is no different than in real life, when severely underweight or “underage” animals are physically incapable of reproduction until they reach a healthier size and/or developmental stage.

Any larval-stage or cocoon-stage Pokémon is incapable of reproduction.

Caterpillars can’t reproduce. Neither can cocoons. This is true to real-life.

Yes, this includes Pokémon like Larvitar & Pupitar, and Bagon & Shelgon. Their taxonomic clade convergently evolved the larvae-pupae-adult life cycle, so it falls under the same rule.

Yes, Larvesta doesn’t evolve into Volcarona until level 59. Larvesta is a caterpillar, it cannot reproduce. This means that the entire lineage cannot reproduce until at least level 59.

Examples of larval-stage Pokémon include but is not limited to: Caterpie, Weedle, Wurmple, Sewaddle, Scatterbug, Blipbug, Grubbin, Larvesta, Snom, Larvitar, and Bagon.

In general, the adult stage of a larval Pokémon is capable of reproduction immediately upon evolution, but this is definitely not true for all of them and you should actively consult the life cycles of these Pokémon.

Baby Pokémon cannot reproduce

Babies can’t make babies. It does not matter what level they are at.

This is a very specific group of Pokémon, and they are: Pichu, Cleffa, Igglybuff, Togepi, Tyrogue, Smoochum, Elekid, Magby, Azurill, Wynaut, Budew, Chingling, Bonsly, Mime Jr., Happiny, Munchlax, Riolu, Mantyke, and Toxel.

In the videogames, certain Baby Pokémon are produced with incense items. These do not exist in this world because that’s way too complicated to figure out its ecological implications. Plus, many of the later-Gen Baby Pokémon were introduced with incense-holding mechanics as an in-game continuity explanation for why they weren’t available in earlier games. If your Game Master wants to incorporate the incense-holding breeding mechanic from the games, have at it.  

What are Egg Groups and how cross-species mating works:

Pokémon form at least 18 named broad egg groups, and any species is capable of being in two of them at a time.

Egg groups are how the magicks of Pokémon divide themselves. They represent broad physiological differences and groupings, allowing Pokémon to reproduce with others that are somewhat like themselves. This means that Pokémon who are living rocks will be able to mate with others who are living rocks, while aquatic Pokémon will be able to mate with other aquatic Pokémon (sort of), and so forth.

When two Pokémon of different species mate, the babies will be the species of the “mother.”

What are Egg Moves and how does my Pokémon get one:

Egg moves are moves that a Pokémon knows from birth—on the learnset charts, this is also marked as “learns at level 1.” They are inherited from the parents, notably the “father.” In the videogames, egg moves are largely the only way for Pokémon to be able to learn certain attacks, but in this game, egg moves can also be taught to a Pokémon with enough dedication.

When calculating egg moves, the ones from the learnset chart come first, then should the total egg moves be more than 4, it is up to your Game Master to determine which ones your newborn will have. There are different ways you can do this, but you must stick to one, and it’s advised that you use whichever method best fits your game’s narrative style:

Dice roll

You do what the videogames do and override the default egg moves (“learns at level 1”) with whatever the baby is inheriting from its parents directly (ie: what comes from the breeding learnset chart)

Note: in the videogames it is possible to breed high-level attacks onto a newborn Pokémon so long as it is within the newborn’s possible level-up learnset. As an example, a Swampert that knows Hydro Pump could have baby Mudkips that also know Hydro Pump from birth. This is a really cool breeding mechanic in the videogames, but I am unable to decide whether it should be officially kept or not. As such, it is left to Game Master discretion whether this is a cool feature that gets kept or is considered an unfair and unbalancing mechanic.

FOP Fae Lore Hcs

- Many years before godparenting became a practice to the fae, they still hailed in the human realm, earth, forests were more enchanted and granted an amount of protection from magical predators.

- One of said predators is the fae's biggest and most dangerous predator, the tonorion, a massive insectoid beast that absorbs the magic in the air, eating fae of all kinds whole and alive, it's also known to attack humans who have the scent of magic on them, such as humans practicing witchcraft or godchildren, the attacks are in part due to tonorions mistaking them for fae, the attacks are usually mistaken as bear or other wild animal attacks by humans.

- It is harder for tonorions to find and attack fae that are in a group, for this reason godparents are typically in pairs, solo godparents are usually assigned to kids that are away from tonorion territory; that being forests so typically rather rich kids that are unlikely to go in a forest, this is especially common for brand new godparents.

- Fae created the fae realm, now known as Fairy World, for protection, portals to Fairy World come in the form of Fairy Rings, as their usually found in forests, this is why tonorions are typically found there.

- Back before godparenting became a practice, fairies would steal misbehaving human children, replacing them with a fae known as changelings, but over time fae began to care for humans, seeing these were not naughty awful children, but hurt and traumatized in need of help, so instead of stealing troubled children, they would guide and help them through childhood, rules were added for safety of both fae and humans alike but the rules became more strict over time until Da Rulez of today became known.

- Unfortunately, the changelings did not want to stop the old practice, they became dangerous, trying to lead godchildren to doom disguised as their godparents, steadily becoming more drastic and a danger to fae and humankind alike, eventually banned from both Fairy World and Anti Fairy World due to how truly deadly and harsh the changelings were.

- No one nowadays knows the true form of a changeling, they prefer to take the form of the last life they took, be it inadvertently or directly, changelings are considered severely dangerous, over centuries they have been known to intentionally cause godparents to go through magical backup, sell off fairy and anti-fairy wings to black markets on earth, kidnap fairies to sell them to humans practicing witchcraft looking for fairies for potion making, they have been known to also eat fae, particularly the anti-fairies exposed form as it gives them more magical power especially when eaten whole and wriggling.

- As a result of how dangerous changelings are, fairies and Anti-Fairies have a silent agreement that if there are any changelings causing trouble they must assist in stopping whatever trouble it's causing and ideally, take out the changeling for good.

- Fairies and Anti-Fairies were not always enemies, even after godparenting became a strong practice, fairies and anti-fairies were happily living in harmony in Fairy World, Anti-Fairies have existed from the beginning of fae kind, but being the opposite of their counterparts did not make them naturally evil, quite the opposite, fairies and their anti-fairies were often raised together, considering each other family, some even calling each other cousins, hating their counterparts or wanting them gone was not only seen as strange but foolish, a fairy and anti-fairies life is forever linked together if one dies the other will too.

- The anti-fairies job back then was dominion over all forms of luck, good and bad and how to dispute it to humanity individually, some even co-parented as godparents for children that needed a little extra luck, there was nothing in their magic that made it strictly negative especially in terms of luck related wishes.

 - The reason Anti-Fairies no longer live normally in Fairy World is because many centuries ago there were some fae that did not believe the Anti-Fairies belonged, that wanted them out, spreading rumors and making anti-fairies look bad to the public until the anti-fairies were banished after one of these fae framed the then leader of the Anti-Fairies for the murder of a fairy, the fae did this after striking a deal with a changeling in secret, when the fairy's blood is on their hands, not the Anti-Fairy, leaving the Anti-Fairies in what would become Anti-Fairy World where the Anti-Fairies were deep in poverty and struggling to keep their wand functioning nearly daily.

- History was completely rewritten and propaganda spread, making both fairies and Anti-Fairies believe Anti-Fairies being a fairies opposite meant they had to be evil and could never be anything that's not dictated by their fairy counterpart, most fairies aren't old enough to remember a time when the two weren't enemies, not even Jorgen knows the truth of the propaganda, the few that are still around still perpetuate and spread bad faith on the Anti-Fairies, some even framing the bad deeds done by changelings as Anti-Fairies doing evil.

- The true form of fairies is very large, glowing bodies usually with many eyes, large wings, as well as other attributes depending on the fairy, they hide their true forms as not to scare or traumatize human children even those who aren't godparents in case humans come to Fairy World for any reason, revealing their true form is considered a severe threat in fae society, not needing a wand for such power without their glamor put pure, raw, natural magic to use.

- The true form of Anti-Fairies on the other hand, is much smaller, barely larger than a fist, having a sort of  bat-squid appearance with a single eye with black skellera and sideways pupil, as well as a long tail with the shape of an upside-down heart at the very end, usually compared to a devils tail; unlike fairies, Anti-Fairies don't have glamor the same way their counterparts do, their true form is protected by the body one usually sees, their Husk, they can shapeshift it like fairies do with glamor and their bodies, but it's more limited for Anti-Fairies, they can't change the color, they are always blue which makes it very impossible for them to have a human disguise at least not one that can actually pass as human.

- It is extremely difficult to get the Anti-Fairy out of their Husk, the chest would need to be caved in to get the squishy body out, that sort of damage is not easy to do to a fae without excessive force, out of the Husk an Anti-Fairy is far more vulnerable, unlike their counterparts, far more susceptible and sensitive to getting hurt or even killed in the right circumstances, once the Anti-Fairy is put back in the Husk's chest the damage seals itself back up, as well as any damage of before the Anti-Fairy was put back into its Husk, this doesn't mean they have a flawless healing factor, their still capable of physical disabilities and issues.

- If a Husk is destroyed beyond repair, an Anti-Fairy can have a new one created but this takes a lot of magic, usually multiple Anti-Fairies and the new Husk is physically weaker, usually coming with chronic pain and weaker magical capabilities, some even losing the ability to fly, there are some Anti-Fairies that are unable to get a new Husk due to how much magic it takes and needs help due to how vulnerable their true form is.

- The reason godkids are not allowed remember their fairies or magic is due to an incident known as The Dark Hour, a grown godkid that took to the dark arts side of witchcraft, used the trust gained from fairies that knew him as a child and tricked dozens of fairies and took them away to use for potions, it took an hour to find and rescue the fae but many were already lost, to avoid it ever happening again godchildren had to forget when they grew up and their godparents were forbidden from seeing them again on the off chance it jogged their memories.

- Fae have a large weakness to iron, it burns their flesh worse than acid as well as harshly weakening their magic when near it, all fae are affected by iron and it's one of the few things that can kill them.

- Magical moss found in Fairy World aids fae in shapeshifting, it's usually eaten and used as a medicinal material for those having difficulty with glamor and shapeshifting, especially fed to baby fae to help them develop their glamor and shapeshifting magic.

-Fae of all kinds are naturally attracted to rather shiny objects; it's mostly subconscious and somewhat hypnotic; their instincts just tell them to hold onto the shiny object with rationale not registering in their minds.

- Godparents have an enchantment on them and their wands they cannot use magic not related to wish granting or caring for their godchild, this cap on their magic is to prevent rogue wishes and disorganization, the enchantment is removed if the fairy has a career change or currently without a assigned godchild.

- After the birth of Peri and the godparent shortage being more apparent, the ban on fairy babies was lifted, though new babies were given a lot of precautions and special training wands to avoid the same dangers Peri faced and posed due to his highly powerful and unstable magic.

This is an AU For Dandy's World where the main toons have children! WRT the writers killing Brooklynn, I'm very interested in the S&P of it all.

With Ben, they wanted to kill him off in Episode 7. But Da Rulez wouldn't allow a kid to die in a complete, finished episode, so they had to end the episode with his fingers slipping...then kill him immediately at the start of the next one. THEN, at the end of the episode, they showed his fingers move to say "Look! We didn't kill a kid!"

This time, I assume they can do whatever to Brooklynn without worry because she's 19/20. She's an adult, they can kill her off as easily as Eddie or Tiff or Random Workman #3. Same with the rest of the Campfam.

But I do also wonder if there are Legacy Rules built in. Are you allowed to kill Tim or Lex for real because they were in an earlier movie as kids?

Who knows?

I don't.

I love studying kid shows but I haven't read the rulebooks.

Well, ok, almost time! But time soon approaches for the MDZSJuniorQuartetBingo!!

Yes, it was so nice the first time, I've decided I just had to do it again! The rules run pretty much the same as before, but here's a recap Darlings.

How it'll run:

Just like last time, the event is open to all content creators and enjoyers! This means that you don't have to create something to participate, you can also just share a work that matches the prompt or trope in your square. From fics to edits, art to playlist. If you put a half ounce of creative thinking (or enjoying) into it, then it counts toward your bingo! (Don't forget share it and the updated card!)

To participate, you'll need to fill out the request form (which will open on January 8th). When you do, you will receive a randomized card with different prompts in the standard 5x5 format.

You will have from January 8th until February 28th to fill out and submit your request form. As it's just me running the event, requests can take up to 48 hours to complete, but rarely go beyond that. If it'll take longer than 12 hours, I'll message you to confirm that I received your request so you know your card is on its way.

The event itself will run from March 1st - 31st.

Now that that's sorted, let's get into Da Rulez:

They're fairly straightforward.

You may use any form of fan content for your submission

You may use one piece (a fanfic, comic, fanart, video, etc) to fulfill multiple prompts on your card

You may not use that one piece across multiple cards. That means that if you write or read a fanfic that has content on two cards, you can only choose one to fill

There are no limits beyond that and the space on your card!
