Hi! So I’m rewatching TAB atm and it’s giving me feeeels. Do you have recs for after the get off the plane where John deals with Sherlock and specifically his overdose? I wish we’d had a part 2 where the show went into it, but I’m hoping you can give me some amazing fanfic instead! And Johnlock as friends is good as well as slash!
HI NONNY!!!
AHHHH I love TAB SO MUCH. It’s my favourite Sherlock Ep, and I wish I had more fics related to it :( I don’t have anything new since then, but all these fics are from my S3 / TAB / S4 [FIX IT] Fics list from last March, but because I love y’all, I’ll separate it on its own because it’s pretty far down and hidden, and I know other people would like to read some separate, so here you are!
And friends, if y’all have any TABlock, PLEASE give them to me!! I need more!!
THE ABOMINABLE BRIDE (TABlock) (APR. 2020)

ACD Canon
The Two of Us Against the World by slashscribe (T, 1,617 w., 1 Ch. || Post-TAB, Implied/Referenced Drug Use, Drug Addiction, Anxious Sherlock, Angsty Fluff) – John is there to take care of Sherlock as he comes down from his overdose in The Abominable Bride. Set immediately after the tarmac, back in 221B.
Loudly Unspoken by Mount_Seleya (M, 1,871 w., 1 Ch. || Post-TAB, Love Confessions, Vulnerable Sherlock, Frottage) – John confronts Sherlock about the words he left unsaid on the tarmac. Set immediately after TAB.
Stay by sussexbound (M, 2,067 w., 1 Ch. || Post TAB, Suicidal Ideation Mention, Implied / Referenced Drug Use, Kissing, Love Confessions, Frottage, Coming in Pants) – “Why? Why did you do it? Hmm…?” He takes a deep breath, waits, lets it out again. “Look at me.” There’s no denying him when he takes this tone. “Why did you kill him? Hmm…? For her? After…” A muscle twitches in the corner of John’s eye, and he clamps his jaw down tightly, swallows and sniffs a little before continuing. “For her? After everything she’s done?” “For you.” Before he can even stop himself. Just like that.
Journal of Truths by Goddess_of_the_Night (T, 2,317 w., 1 Ch. || Post-HLV / TAB, Pining, Idiots in Love, Love Confessions, Love Letters, Declarations of Love) – When John escorts Sherlock back to Baker Street from the tarmac, he discovers a journal that Sherlock has kept secret...that he has kept secrets in.
Green Carnation by glenien (T, 2,616 w., 1 Ch. || Sherlock’s Mind Palace, Meta-Fic, Angst and Fluff, Communication, Post-TAB) – John takes Sherlock home. Part 1 of It’s No Longer Eighteen Ninety-Five
The Trial of Sherlock Holmes by jenna221b (G, 3,015 w. across 3 works || TAB!lock, Metafic / TJLC, Victorian AU / 1895, Christmas, Sherlock’s Mind Palace, Oscar Wilde) – Scripts based on speculation that Sherlock will be put on trial in The Abominable Bride to parallel the Oscar Wilde Trials of 1895.
I Love You (Is All That You Can't Say) by theSeventhStranger (T, 3,147 w., 1 Ch. || Post-TAB, Post-Tarmac Scene, Fix-It, Dev. Rel., Retrospective, Angst and Fluff) – “Sherlock. On the tarmac. I got the feeling that you were going to, um. To say something else.”
five times sherlock holmes lied to john watson (and one time he finally told the truth) by miss_frankenstein (G, 5,948 w., 1 Ch. || TAB Compliant || Homophobia, Pining Sherlock, Oscar Wilde Trials, Happy Ending) – Set in "The Abominable Bride" universe, this piece adopts a familiar format to chronicle Sherlock's quiet suffering in the wake of the 1895 Oscar Wilde trials and the particular way they affect his relationship with (and feelings for) John.
Drawstring by May_Shepard (E, 7,412 w., 1 Ch. || Friends to Lovers, UST/RST, Fluff and Smut, Post-TAB, John POV) – John is bothered by Sherlock’s slowly-falling jim-jams… as in hot and bothered and he is trying to deal with a sexy dishevelled Sherlock while also keeping his pining in check.
Never Been This Swept Away by estalita11 (T, 8,531 w., 1 Ch. || Post-TAB, Mary is Not Nice, Drug Use, First Kiss, Love Confessions) – Set immediately after TAB, Sherlock visits his brother to definitely not apologize about earlier and ends up finally learning a few things that would have been nice knowing about months ago. Mycroft never wants to deal with lovestruck idiots ever again.
Out of the Darkness by Irrevocably_Sherlocked (M, 12,165+ w., 2 Ch. || WIP || Death, Overdose, Heavy Angst, Whump, Mary is Not Nice, Post S3/TAB Compliant) – John Watson has long assumed Sherlock Holmes is immune to sentiment, “doesn’t feel things that way.” Sherlock, however, would do anything for the person he loves most in the world, including putting himself in danger while keeping John in the dark in hopes of keeping him safe. Tired of being left behind, John is running a strategy of his own. Unfortunately things do not go as planned for either of them. And as John lays bleeding, Sherlock finally allows himself to say the things he’s always meant to… This is the story of love, forgiveness and finally making right all the wrongs in these two men’s lives.
Wars We Fought, Things We're Not by blueink3 (M, 55,204 w., 10 Ch. || Post S3 / Post TAB, Parentlock, Fluff & Angst, Kidnapping, Whump, Post-TAB, UST/URT, 3G, Mild Peril, Slow Burn, Couple for a Case, Protective Mycroft, Infant Death Pre-Story, Friends to Lovers) – Five months after John's world has fallen apart, Mycroft sends the consulting detective and his doctor on a case that neither is prepared for.
The Adventure of the Silver Scars by tangledblue (NR [M], 142,458 w., 41 Ch. || S3 Fix-It, Post-HLV/ Post-TAB / Canon Compliant, Case Fic, No Baby, Angst, Humour, UST, Slow Burn, Angry John, Reconciliation, Not Nice Mary / Leaving Mary, Dependent Sherlock, Pining Sherlock, Caretaker John, Fist Fights, It’s An Experiment, Virgin Sherlock, Dancing, Drugging, John Whump, Pet Names, Sherlock’s Mind Palace, Scars) – It’s been thirteen months since Mary shot Sherlock and John finds he’s still pissed off about it. Sherlock had thought everything was settled: John and Mary, domestic bliss. But when John turns up at Baker Street with suitcases, the world’s only consulting detective might not be prepared for the consequences. A new case. Some old scores to settle. Certain danger. Concertos, waltzes, and whisky.
MARKED FOR LATER
Stay for Me by Itsallfine (M, 17,310 w., 7 Ch. || Post-TAB, Implied/Referenced Drug Use, Drug Withdrawal, Implied/Referenced Suicide, Hurt/Comfort, First Kiss/Time, Bed Sharing, Mental Health Issues, Not-Nice Mary, Divorce, Angst with Happy Ending, Parentlock) – 221B was packed into boxes and bins, and that was when John knew, really knew—Sherlock had planned to be gone forever.
Crimson Hymns by brilliantlyburning (E, 48,982 w., 9 Ch. || Post-S3/TAB, Angst, Hurt/Comfort, Emotional Hurt/Comfort, Drug Addiction, Unhealthy Coping Methods, Demisexual Sherlock, Boxing, Pining, Sensory Processing Issues, Drug Use, First Kiss / Time, BDSM, Mary is Not Good, Parentlock, Proposal, Happy Ending, Beekeeping, Violence, References to Addiction, Poetry) – He laid his head over John’s heart, eyes level with his silver-rough scar, and listened to the crimson hymns beating beneath the surface. He imagined flowers blooming in his own chest: veins weaving intricate patterns on petals of thin muscle engorged with blood, sinew for stems and tendons for roots—the flowers would be poppies, maybe (addictive) or foxglove (deadly yet useful)—twining gleaming blood-red around the porcelain bone of his ribs. In his mind’s eye the gruesome bouquet all tied together on the left side of his chest, the stems bound together in heartstrings and the flowers fed by the rhythmic contraction of ventricles. It’s yours, he imagined saying to John—from the vena cava to the mitral valve to the arteries it is yours.— Or, the Love Song of W. Sherlock S. Holmes.
NO! by Tildathings (M, 50,043 w., 36 Ch. || Homophobia, Bed Sharing, Military Uniforms, Past Abuse, Jealous John, Stalking, Violence, First Kiss/Time, Fluff, Pillow Talk, Coming Out, Sherlock’s Past, Shower, Cuddling, Grief and Sorrow, Hugs, Character Death) – Sherlock has been in a coma in over 8 months after he overdosed on the plane at TAB, during which time Mary and Rosie were killed by Vivian Norbury. This story starts 3 weeks after Sherlock has woken up. John is asking to move back to Baker Street.
The Summer Boy by khorazir (T, 94,706 w., 6 Ch. || Post S3/Post TAB/Alternate S4, Friends to Lovers, Flashbacks, Sussex, Bullying, 1980′s Kid Sherlock, Emotional Hurt/Comfort, Inexperienced Sherlock, Grief/Mourning, Pining Sherlock) – About half a year after the fateful events at Appledore, Sherlock and John embark on a private case in Sussex. For Sherlock, it’s a journey into his past, bringing up memories both happy and sad that he has locked away for almost thirty years. For John, it means coming to terms with the present – and a potential future with Sherlock. Part 1 of the The Summer Boy series

Release Day
Enjoy this rambling of a fanfic with the most hurried and inspire-lost ending ever.
Pairing: Johnlock (Sherlock Holmes x John Watson) | Genre: Angst, fluff, explicit smut! | Word count: 2254 words | Warnings: Talk about rape, mention of suicide
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
It had been the day John had been totally, completely, undeniably sure would never ever come. Sherlock had broken some laws in the name of a case, and this time neither Mycroft nor Lestrade had been able to save him. Six months in prison. Four for his minor crimes and two for mouthing off at his hearings. What a dumbass, John had thought. So brilliant, and yet, a complete dumbass.
It had been the longest six months in his life though; A life without Sherlock was hard to keep going. John had not even bothered to get out of bed the days he was off from the clinic. His off days were absolute agony. No cases, no taking care of Sherlock... God, he would have killed even for a good fight with Sherlock!
But here he now was, at the gates of the prison, finally seeing Sherlock walking out in his sharp suit he had been wearing when arrested. Six months had not only been long, because John was bored, but because it had given him time to actually think about things. He wasn't constantly going after Sherlock, he was just... By himself. And in those six months he had realized things.
Sherlock looked around and soon spotted John, his face lighting up a little. Clearly he had not expected John to be there when he would finally be released. The detective strode over to his doctor, who grabbed him in a tight hug. It felt good. John felt Sherlock's dark, smooth curls and breathed in his fresh scent. Sherlock had showered and shaved, and judging by the short strands of hair on his shoulders, he had gotten a hair cut as well. He looked exactly the same as the day Lestrade had cuffed him. John was sure half the department had volunteered as the arresting officer, but due to their history and Lestrade's undeniable fondess for Sherlock, Greg had handled the arresting himself.
They sat in silence, both in their chairs, as they were meant to. John had been studying Sherlock the entire evening, not being able to find any symptoms of having suffered a trauma in Sherlock. After another thirty minutes, Sherlock grew annoyed. "What is it, John?" His voice was sharp, as he lowered his book. "Huh? Oh, I... Nothing", John responded, trying to seem genuine, but obviously the detective was having none of it. The world's most successful detective in the history of mankind wouldn't fall for any of John's lies, ever, and the doctor should have been aware of it. Sherlock's stare was drilling holes through John's skull. "You seemed to survive jail well", John finally told him. For a fraction of a second Sherlock seemed confused, before his lips parted and he looked down, realizing, what John meant. "I was. Repeatedly", he admitted silently, biting his teeth together. John could see Sherlock's facial muscles tense up. "Oh my god, Sherlock... I'm so sorry."
The silence built up again. John was deep in his thoughts while Sherlock was still reading his book. One could practically hear the dust settling in the room. "How did you...", John abruptly broke the silence, not daring to finish his sentence. Not that he needed to, Sherlock had known the sentence since John uttered the first word. "My mind palace, John", he replied, eyes focused on the pages, but he stopped reading. "I went to my mind palace. Thought of some unsolved cases and... And you."
John's head snapped up and he looked at Sherlock like a deer in the headlights. Had Sherlock just said that he had gotten through rape by thinking about him? John's head was reeling. "It's okay", the detective continued. John wanted to tell Sherlock to stop talking, but this was probably Sherlock's way of conciously or subconciously tell him, that he needed to talk to someone about it, so John kept his mouth shut. "I have never enjoyed sex. It's dull, a boring need. Like eating and sleeping. Absolutely meaningless."
The good doctor felt sorry for Sherlock. He had never experienced a good shag? He had felt like rape was just another time he was having bad sex? John got up from his chair, took a few determined steps towards Sherlock, and sat down in his lap, knees on both sides of Sherlock. "Sherlock, I am going to kiss you. If you don't like it, tell me to stop", he told the detective, and proceeded to bring his lips down on Sherlock's, cupping his face with his rough hands. John started slow and gentle, but got more passionate, when Sherlock's lips parted. Their tongues tangoed, as John pressed closer to Sherlock's body. The detective wrapped his long arms around John, as his book fell to the floor with a thud.
John's breath was ragged, his pulse off the charts and he could almost feel his dilated pupils. Sherlock wasn't in a much better condition; His breath was hot and heavy on John's skin and his eyes had gone dark. It only fueled John's fire. "All good?" he felt the need to ask. This was for once about Sherlock. John wanted him to feel loved and understand just how amazing sex could be. Much to his relief, Sherlock nodded, "it feels... good, John." The doctor lost himself in another kiss, before realizing, that Sherlock might not be comfortable in the chair. "Want to move to the bedroom?" "I think that could be a good idea", Sherlock let out a little laugh, that made John smile wide.
Sherlock always did look good in purple, but John wasn't gonna dwell over that as he started to unbutton said color shirt. He had already discarded his jumper and Sherlock's jacket on the floor. The detective looked absolutely delicious laying on his back on the bed, looking up at John with lustful eyes. Never mind John "Three Continents" Watson, this was a real achievement - Sherlock Holmes, not having a single good shag in his life, lusting for the doctor.
John let out a moan, as Sherlock removed his trousers and pants, and grabbed John's erect cock. "Oh god... You have... You have lube?" John was out of breath, more than he should have been at this point. He could've cum all over Sherlock's toned stomach just by looking at the detective underneath him. Sherlock was so fucking gorgeous, his skin milky white and bones almost pressing through. John trailed one of Sherlock's collar bones through his skin, before reaching for the lube Sherlock promised would be in the top drawer of the nightstand.
John squeezed some lube on his hand, warmed it up and slowly started working Sherlock's cock, drawing the most sinful moan out of the detective's mouth. God, John was going to be wanking to that moan for ages. "Condoms?" "I- I wasn't prepared for that, but you won't be needing one. It's okay, we're both clean", Sherlock struggled to talk, arching his back slightly at the pleasant feeling John was causing.
Being a doctor was a privilege, to be able to help so many people, but every once in a while John found it to be an advantage in his personal life; This was one of those times. John slicked a finger and after massaging around Sherlock's hole for a minute, he pushed it in. He could hear Sherlock hiss at the feeling, so he gave him a moment to adjust, before starting to look for his prostate. The walnut-sized gland was easy to find with said medical training, and John didn't hesitate to use every single trick in his book on it. Before he even knew it, Sherlock was rocking himself onto John's finger, moaning and wanting more.
John drew his finger out, earning a displeased whimper, but soon pushed back in, this time two fingers, and headed back to Sherlock's prostate. John felt a burning need to pull out his fingers and fuck Sherlock utterly senseless. This is about Sherlock, he reminded himself. This is about giving him for once in his life a good experience that's all about him. All about someone loving and wanting to please him. The thought was almost as good as getting to fuck Sherlock, so he rolled with it. This seemed to please Sherlock the most, so John would keep it up at any cost.
"Good god, John!" Sherlock's body was tensing up and he felt a heat building in his stomach, pushing him to worm against John's fingers even more desperately. John knew Sherlock was chasing his climax, so he added just a little more pressure in massaging, and wrapped his other hand around Sherlock's twitching cock. A few strokes did it, and Sherlock came undone with a cry.
God, he looked so beautiful, absolutely wrecked with pleasure. Judging from the lube, Sherlock did please himself every once in a while, but John was sure he had never experienced something this good. Sherlock's ivory skin was covered in a thin sheet of sweat, riddled with hormones that made an intoxicating scent. His dark hair was messy and his plump lips parted, as he breathed heavily after John had guided him through his orgasm. The doctor completely ignored his own touch-starved erection, and just kneeled between Sherlock's long legs and watched the beautiful view in front of him. Sherlock opened finally his eyes as the corners of his mouth tugged upwards. "That was... good. I apologize for my lack of a better word."
John let Sherlock just enjoy his bliss and wrapped a hand around his own cock, when he felt Sherlock gently grab his wrist. "Just... Wait just a second, alright? You deserve some reward of your own", Sherlock promised, apparently feeling like he owed John to let him fuck him. "Oh no, Sherlock, this is... This is not something you keep score of", John told him. "This has nothing to do with me. This was all about you, Sherlock. About you having one good shag even if it would be the end of me", he explained, feeling a little sting in his heart. He wanted to be more than one good shag, he wanted to be Sherlock's everything the way Sherlock was his everything. He wanted to stop sleeping upstairs and move into Sherlock's room, to make gentle love in the morning sunlight and to cure Sherlock's overthinking with a good pounding, when he was getting lost in a difficult case.
"I want to." John felt his heart stop for a second, as he looked into Sherlock's silvery blue eyes. Sherlock actually wanted to have sex with John. It couldn't have all been the effect of one good orgasm, could it? "But you just climaxed", John protested. "I recover fast, doctor", Sherlock smirked at him. John shook his head, slightly amused at Sherlock's reply. "You sure?" he confirmed, and got an eager nod in response.
It was better than John could have ever imagined. After prepping Sherlock properly and lubing himself generously, John aligned himself with Sherlock, and pushed in. A soft cry left his lips as he slowly pushed all the way in, letting Sherlock adjust and find a comfortable position. Oh my god, Sherlock was so tight and hot. John was already moaning like a freight train when he slowly pulled away, almost to the end, and pushed back in. He started building up a pace and tried to angle his thrusts so he brushed Sherlock's prostate every single time. And good god, when Sherlock started to beg for John to absolutely wreck him... "Harder, John, please!" He gave Sherlock everything he had, until he reached his release, crying out in ecstacy.
Sherlock helped himself into his second climax while John was panting and half out of it. Apparently it had been a while since he had gotten laid properly. The detective held his doctor close and closed his eyes, just enjoying the moment. He felt thorougly spent, but thoroughly loved. It hadn't been a coincidence, that he had thought about John while getting raped in prison; John was his everything. John was the reason Sherlock made it ouf of prison alive. While Sherlock was the master at manipulating and managing his feelings, being in prison, where his tall and thin frame - and especially that cute bottom and curly hair of his - had been very appreciated, could have gotten the best of him. Even if he hadn't killed himself, he wouldn't have been the same man that went in. Sure, he wasn't the same man in this scenario either, but with John by his side, he would be able to recover.
"They said it was the only thing this pretty mouth of mine was good for", Sherlock quietly said later that evening, laying in bed with John. They had showered and had dinner, before crawling back into Sherlock's bed together. But as he saw the horror on John's face, he realized, that he shouldn't have said that. "I'm sorry, John, that was very insensitive of me-" "No, Sherlock. If you need to talk about it, talk about it. I'm here, I'll listen, day or night. Don't you once think you have to keep this inside." John was almost defensive, sounding nearly... Angry? Had Sherlock angered him? "You are the world's most brilliant, most successful detective. Your mouth tells the rest of us what's going through your head, and it's bloody brillint. The most beautiful thing I have ever witnessed", the doctor kept talking, looking at Sherlock with a serious look. "Don't ever think they were right." "Thank you, John."

A POINT BY POINT EVISCERATION OF KYLE SMITH’S REVIEW OF MISSION IMPOSSIBLE: ROGUE NATION
A critical analytical response by salty film major™ SuperGeekyToon
Inspired by the discussion the Benthan Discord had in how people fundamentally misunderstand Tom Cruise. @ineverhadadoubt @olympain @lady-johnlocked-moriarity @mesutglozil @katharoaimos
So How do I unpack this man’s fundamental misunderstanding of Rogue Nation? By doing a critical analysis of his interpretation of course. Like any good College student I will be citing the article I am responding to:
https://nypost.com/2015/07/29/boring-new-mission-impossible-coasts-on-cruise-control/
Now firstly, just because a person doesn’t like the film you like or give it as high a score does not mean they are a bad reviewer.
Reviews are a fundamentally subjective analysis influenced by personal taste, mental state, and viewing experience. Critics make their living in opinionated analysis and to not acknowledge that would incredibly reckless of me. However, this review goes beyond mere negative opinion. It reveals a dangerous ideology that has influenced this man’s fundamental understanding of Rogue Nation.
He begins his critique as follows:
“Neither bad enough to be a complete waste of time nor good enough to remember past next Tuesday, the film co-written and directed by Christopher McQuarrie staples together one routine action piece after another with cutesy dialogue and lots of merciless pounding away at iPad screens.”
Ok, so I’m not sure what he means here by ‘cutesy dialogue’. Does he mean banter? Because this film isn’t a ‘day at the beach movie rom-com’, It’s an action motivated spy film commenting on the relationship between “the tool and the government” (Cinemawins Rogue Nation Video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NOA1Til3D68&t=493s).
The dialogue in this film is snappy and well arranged, there’s not really a moment that could be considered cutesy. It’s not a routine action piece either, the film does very well to set up the stunts in the narrative so that they don’t feel forced. All the stunt work, including the cold open, is done by Tom Cruise himself. So, he is in real danger there, the audience doesn’t feel the same disconnect when there are CGI and stunt doubles doing stunt work.
Also, they don’t actually use iPad’s, they use Microsoft Surfaces you uncultured swine.
He continues:
“Especially if we know that Ethan will have to hold his breath under the wet stuff for three solid minutes, if all goes perfectly, which, of course, it will not. Is there a super-spy trick to this? No, McQuarrie simply has Ethan be superhuman. Holding onto a flying jet with his fingertips at hundreds of miles an hour? No problem. Walking away from a 100-mph motorcycle wipeout? Yawn. Ethan even suffers brain damage at one point, then shakes it off like it’s a gin and tonic. Superman thinks this guy is boringly infallible.”
There is a point to be made that Ethan seems to be “superhuman”, especially where it seems impossible that he survives. But 1) It’s called Mission Impossible for a reason. 2) This is more of a nitpick then it is a valid point of criticism. Plenty of movies have characters survive things that should’ve killed them (e.g. Tony Stark in AVENGERS 1).
A bigger point to be made here is the role of Tom Cruise in the movie meta. The filmed can be viewed analytically through a few lenses. One that is fundamental to the enjoyment of the film is Tom Cruise taking unnecessary risks to his wellbeing for the sake of the action set pieces. Without Tom Cruise Action Set Pieces™, the franchise would be inherently different.
Kyle won’t be impressed until Tom Cruise FUCKIN DIES because he took it too far and it was in his will to show the movie anyway.
These action set pieces are a combination of great cinematography, sound design, and action execution. Dismissing them as merely paint-by-number action set pieces is doing a disservice to the film and the creative efforts of those involved in the making of it, especially Tom Cruise.
As we near the end of this review, we find ourselves with the most fundamental misunderstanding of character I’ve ever seen in the entirety of the two decades I’ve walked and breathed on this God forsaken earth:
“But even Superman had a girlfriend. Cruise seems to have given up on trying to convince us that he’s a ladies’ man and with the female lead — a fellow spy (Rebecca Ferguson) of uncertain loyalty — he shares no moment sexier than a warm hug of the quality you’d give your aunt at Thanksgiving. Lacking much character except (like everyone else here) expertise at all things, she is on hand only to check the box marked, “Strong, assertive, female.” It would make no difference within the movie if she perished at the hands of the Syndicate’s creepy chief, Lane (Sean Harris). Naming her Ilsa and having her hang out in Casablanca brings up the kinds of comparisons that can only be labeled unfortunate.”
This right here is what prompted this analysis. When I read this, I was reeling.
And then I showed the Discord chat.
And it proceeded to make the chat want to physically fight Kyle Smith.
The implication that Ethan needs to FUCK Ilsa to make their chemistry believable and to make Ilsa an interesting character is to quote Bill and Ted “like, totally bogus, dude.” Like, Full Stop. I shouldn’t have to make that argument in this day and age.
Ilsa is a complex 3-dimensional character. The movie is better for having her and Ethan not share any “intimate” scene together. Ilsa is conflicted by her job and has her own sense of morality, which is what prompts her to save Ethan in the first place. Her own sense of good and bad creates tension between her work and herself.
The conversation she and Ethan have in the train station summarizes her ideological conflict very well. She is a tough ass woman trying to survive. She is not a damsel in distress but a woman who is on equal footing with Ethan.
This also pairs nicely with Ethan’s whole story arc. As it directly mirrors a rogue agent who is doing it for the benefit of the collective human good and one who has gone rogue at the behest of her government. They are foils and equals. And yes, her death would’ve meant something, because if she would have died the ideological implications of her death would mean cementing the argument of the film of the” tool vs the wielder” firmly on one side. The film is better off ending with her surviving because it leaves the ideological implications of her story open for interpretation.
The subject matter here is very complicated and to have a simple solution would undermine the entire film.
Also saying Ilsa is a STRONG ASSERTIVE FEMALE™, suggesting she is merely a cliché action girl does her a disservice. She is a strong character with a complex struggle, more dimensional than Madeleine from Spectre, who appeared in the same year as this film. To quote the lovely @ineverhadadoubt and their frankly singlehanded destruction of Male Entitlement to Female sexuality:
Also, the Idea that no one here has character is so baffling to me? I think what Kyle is trying to say is that these characters are boring for caring about each other and not displaying the typical traits of toxic masculinity often found in the genre. We see the role of the Damsel in Distress™ taken up by Benji, not a role usually given to male characters. It strengthens the bond Ethan and Benji have created throughout the film and makes for a beautiful friendship that is not easily toppled by fragile masculinity. Every character on Team Hunt comes to care for each other, which is different from a lot of spy films. There is no toxic masculinity in their friendships here sir.
Benji wants to help Ethan and is determined to stay by his side, despite Ethan’s protests, which makes his capture near the end of the film even more tragic. He also is a cultured man and a nerd because he 1) plays Halo 5 and 2) loves the opera. He isn’t put in a box because of his interests and he is genuinely a very funny character.
Brandt and Luther just want their friends to live and commit treason in order to keep it that way. They have no discernable characters to you @KYLE SMITH because apparently, you have some fucking shitty ass friends who won’t lay down their lives for you.
So to summarize Rogue Nation is a Fantastic film with fantastic Characters and you should definitely watch it. Also #FuckKyleSmith (Please don’t send hate to him either, I just think his opinion is shitty)
#benthan#rogue nation#Mission: Impossible#hot take#critical analysis#Bruh like how can you have the Worst™ opinion on this film ????#fuckin @ me Kyle Smith

The angels sing within: Johnlock hug - Maurice parallels
Sherlock’s look towards the ceiling as he tenderly reaches for John just kills me. And I know where I’ve seen a similar look of ‘this is too much God help me’: Remember when Maurice starts stroking Clive’s hair and Clive suddenly turns around to embrace him? This incident is their first actual physical intimacy. Maurice looks up with a similar look.
And the cheek rub also is mirrored in this scene, although before the ‘look’
And now I know why I was so reminded - the score is also very similar including the fact that the singing stops as the tenderness increases (here the score stops completely) as if the caress in itself is so sublime that it isn’t needed anymore. The angels sing within.

I just read your rant about how you never expected canon Johnlock and I wish I had seen that quote from Mark at SDCC '16 sooner. I probably wouldnt have had such high hopes had I seen him firmly deny the ship. This will take a while to get over.
I’m so sorry. :(
For me, there was always a huge, huge difference between believing in the ship, thinking that the characters absolutely belonged together, etc, and thinking that the creators would have the guts to make it canon. It just seems to me that they saw something other than what we saw. It was little things all the time, like them saying on the DVD commentary for HLV that John looked jealous of Sherlock for having scored with Janine. We all saw a man who looked devastated that Sherlock had potentially slept with someone other than himself. He was fixated on it, and almost hostile to Janine. Not the actions of someone who was also, despite his recent marriage, interested in Janine that way - and yet that’s what they were saying in the commentary. Or Mark Gatiss saying that the scene wherein John takes Mary back - grumpily, reluctantly, grudgingly - was “touching” and “lovely” or something along those lines. Like - what????
And then this quote wasn’t the first time that he or Moffat have explicitly said, no, we’re not going to do it. They could have and they should have, but I was pretty convinced that they wouldn’t because their comments over the years haven’t added up to people who were tried to hide a fun surprise - they sounded irritated when asked directly, and kept interpreting things differently. The very notion that Sherlock Holmes might be interested in Molly Hooper is insultingly ridiculous. There is just no way. EVEN if we’re talking strictly platonically, the canon is very clear that no one in the universe is more important to Sherlock than John, and that just has to be given its due weight (and giving things their due weight is decidedly NOT their strength as writers!) How many times has Sherlock risked his life - or come within a hair’s breadth of dying - for John’s sake? He just doesn’t behave that way with anyone else. They’re patently miserable when they’re not together. That’s always been the central theme of the show, and giving either one of them a relationship that takes precedence over this destroys that dynamic. That’s what the entire show is about: these two people. So they created that, then shoehorned in a wife whose presence in their lives was extremely disruptive and life-endangering in more than one way, and wanted us to buy it? Or these repeated suggestions of Sherlock and Irene, or Sherlock and Molly - just no. I’m sorry, but that’s not what people fell in love with in this show. It was always about Sherlock and John. This is why I find this so difficult to talk about now, because that IS what they wrote. But somehow they themselves seem to have missed the boat in terms of what’s actually good about what they created. WE saw it. We still see it. Their decision to not go there doesn’t make sense with the story or the characters they created in this incarnation of Sherlock/John. Instead they think their audience will be titillated by Mary Sue-type characters, family drama, babies, and the constant rehashing of old characters who were a success once before. They seem to think that lack of resolution is “sophisticated” writing, that only pedantic shows would explain everything (aka plot everything) in satisfactory detail and credibility, and they’ve missed out on this most important thing: the two main characters.
Pity. Because I don’t see people getting over the pain of this incredible disappointment any time soon. And not having thought they would do it doesn’t make it any less disappointing for those of us who thought that, yet still hoped against hope that they would. It’s still incredibly jarring to see things like Janine emerging from Sherlock’s bedroom in one of his shirts, even an imaginary Molly kiss, constantly recurring references to Irene bloody Adler, and Mary Sue Morstan. >:/ They didn’t have to do that. There were even ways that they could have ended it ambiguously and let us all think what we wanted from there on in, but they chose not to and it’s incredibly infuriating, disappointing, insulting, all of it. I’m really sorry that you’re hurting over this. I am, too. *hugs tight*

My thoughts for Season 4 Episode 2: The Lying Detective.
My thoughts on watching this for the second time. -Poor John, but damn he's looking fine. -John hallucinating his dead wife. -What "friends" is Rosie with? -Wow Culverton is a creepy dude. Great acting. - Sherlock is in drugs again. Everytime Sherlock loses John he goes back to drugs. - Sherlock in his drug addled state can't keep up with his brain but can just enough to help a suicidal woman. -Mycroft in a tux! -Sherlock Holmes super detective, deducing a crap ton of information from a piece of paper! -"big brother is watching you" "literally" -Lady Smallwood telling Mycroft he hasn't made it up to her, and he goes how and it jump cuts to the lady in red saying sex, and later they're seen getting dressed in his office. You naughty. -Sherlock writing 'fuck off' on Mycrofts tracer. -Sherrinford. -Sherlock going an all night date with a John mirror and he actually loved it. But basically he went on a date with his sister. -Drugged sherlock walking by John's house. -Drugged Sherlock having a weird hallucination walking on the walls. But still having the clarity to predict the damn future! -Mrs. Hudson you BAMF. -Sherlock letting go of his gun and grabbing the tea, then Hudders holds him at gunpoint. -Sherlock's in the boot! Hilarious. -John going crazy about how Sherlock knew everything 2 weeks in advance. -John still holds a grudge about the fall. -fake mary explaining how Sherlock did it, but that's actually John figuring it out. He's learning! -Sherlock misses John. -John getting furious that people don't know it's his blog. -The whole children's hospital scene was awkward and plain weird. Except where John smiles when he remembers an old case. -John loves Sherlock in the hat. -John realizing Sherlock is right and Sherlock smiles in acknowledgement. -The game is on, Mary is dissappearing. -He's touching a dead person, why!? -Faith is not the same girl as the lady in red. Sherlock losing it. -Lestrade interviewing John intercutting with the mourge scene is weird. -John beating the crap out of Sherlock. Broke my heart! -the score to this episode is just brilliant by the way. -John looking at Sherlock in hospital, he totally loves him. -John still thinking about Sherlock in the hat, does he have a kink or what? -John's back at Baker st. -John is deducing again! -there's a 3rd sibling! Whattt? -Mrs. Hudson calling Mycroft an idiot. -John found the disc, thank the lord. -"get out of my house, you reptile" -disc Mary saying "the man we both love" aw yeah -John being awesome driving the Astin Martin. -Sherlock doesn't want to die, but he's literally 'died'/put himself in an almost unwinable situation for John like a bunch of times. Get it together John. -Basically after Mary died she was the driving force for Johnlock. She's just like, if i am not there you need Sherlock, take him. And of course mary knew John wasn't happy. She knew he couldn't handle her death, he needed Sherlock so she did the only thing she could think of to get them together. And it fracking worked. -John knocking the door down with a damn fire extinguisher, hottie! -Sherlock getting his confession. -The number 3. -the cane was recording, he knew! -poor Lestrade can't handle hearing Culvertons murders. -John's mind begging him to stay. Think of him wearing the hat again. -Sherlock wants to see the baby! -Sherlock saying anything and everything to keep John in the room. -John doesn't blame Sherlock for Mary's life anymore. - that damn text alert, sent off John's jealously. Something that he thought was long lost. -Happy Birthday Sherlock. -John on a rampage about taking chances. -I deadass thought Sherlock was going to tell John he loved him, that he was the man that made him want to be better. -John confessing to an invisible Mary, and Sherlock just gets it. - John wants more, he do, get the hell on with it. He's a better man with Sherlock. -DAMN THAT HUG! -how long was hug. -it is was it is. -Sherlock reminding John that it is okay not to be perfect. -sherlock wearing the hat to see John smile. -Mycroft you naughty boy! That is not Lestrade Mycroft. But damn you get it. Take the card. -the therapist is the secret sister, the fuck!? -miss me? -Johns realization. -noooo John! So yeah. Basically John has a hat kink and Sherlock went on a date with his sister.

So what if John’s bedroom is now a research library. It’s not like John needs a bedroom, he can share with Sherlock. Insomnia by TheSingingGirl (K+, 2,635 w., 1 Ch. || Friendship, Humour, Bed Sharing, Sleepy Sherlock) – Sleep is merely the next frontier in what has become the battle to keep Sherlock alive. It’s because of this that John ends up in bed with a sociopath.

Which meant he’d slept through his phone’s alarm. And for a moment he glared blearily at the noisemaker before smacking at it with his palm. Ugh, he felt like rubbish. The back of his throat was burning with the irritation that heralded a proper dose, his nose was threatening to drip every few seconds, and he had the uncomfortable flush that normally suggested a fever. Nothing high, just uncomfortable. Nothing deadly, just irritating. Nothing worth calling in sick with, just a full day of discomfort in the face of other people’s discomfort. It was going to be a day where he was forced to bite his tongue from telling people off. “You’re not as sick as I am, so off you pop.” Part 7 of Tumblr Shorts

Proving A Point by elldotsee & J_Baillier (E, 186,270 w., 28 Ch. || Me Before You Fusion || Medical Realism, Insecure John, Depression, Romance, Angst, POV John, Sherlock Whump, Serious Illness, Doctor John, Injury Recovery, Assisted Suicide, Sherlock’s Violin, Awkward Sexual Situations, Alcoholism, Drugs, Idiots in Love, Slow Burn, Body Image, Friends to Lovers, Hurt / Comfort, Pain, Big Brother Mycroft, Intimacy, Anxiety, PTSD, Family Issues, Psychological Trauma, John Whump, Case Fics, Loneliness, Pain) – Invalided home from Afghanistan, running out of funds and convinced that his surgical career is over, John Watson accepts a mysterious job offer to provide care and companionship for a disabled person. A Is For Aftermath by ElvendorkInfinity (T, 10,567 w. || Injury / Whump, Hurt/Comfort, Friendship/Pre-Slash/Bromance/Platonics, Hallucinations, Introspection, Insecure / Worried John, Big Brother Mycroft, Alternating POV, Anxious Sherlock, Self-Deprecating, Mildly Possessive Sherlock, 3G Moment) – John is still hallucinating, Sherlock cannot sleep, and Lestrade has a new case for them. But will life at 221B ever be able to return to normal? Epilogue to M is for Moriarty.
Shuteye Shenanigans by Ayakae (K+, 13,263 w. || Post-TRF, Friendship / Epic Bromance, John’s Nightmares, Angsty Fluff, Bed Sharing, Humour, Cuddles, Taking Care of Each Other, Domestics) – John Watson has never slept with Sherlock Holmes. Never ever ever. And never will, thank you very much. Well, there was that one time, but John didn’t count that. It was completely different, just like the second time it happened. And the third. And the fourth. Epic bromance, but it can be read as pre-slash if you wish.
Hope for Heroes by Richefic (K+, 16,887 w. || Post-TGG Fic, Introspection / Flashbacks, Friendship/Epic Bromance, Hurt/Comfort, Worried/Anxious Sherlock, Sherlock Admires John, BAMF John, John Deduces, Fancy Party, John’s Self Esteem, Domestics) – In the final moments of “The Great Game” Holmes hopes he will have the chance to tell his flatmate that he was wrong. They buy an old cottage on the South Downs, and exchange their nonstop life in Baker Street for quiet contemplation, bee studies, and book writing. They might go completely insane, but sometimes it takes stepping outside of the life you’re living to find the life you want. Part 1 of Through The Clouds
Chaperones by MissDavis (T, 34,114 w. || 11 Years Post-S4, Fake Relationship, Parentlock, Disney World, Bed / Room Sharing, Friends to Lovers, Fluff, First Kiss, Obsessive Sherlock, Insecure John) – Right. Of course. Everyone assumed they were a couple and no one would question it.
