So for my first playthrough of Baldur's Gate 3, I'm trying to go in as blind as possible and not looking things up or save scumming. I'm just letting the chips fall where they may and seeing how it plays out.

I'm certain I must be missing things, though. I've gotten through what I think is the entire first act and have only recruited Karlach, Wyll and Shadowheart. I am tangentially aware that there are far more companions than that, though maybe some of them get introduced later.

This is partially a personal problem I have with isometric top down perspectives in video games. With the camera pulled so far back, not only do I find it more difficult to get immersed, I also find it easier to get lost and miss things. I personally prefer games with a more "over the shoulder" third person perspective, like Mass Effect, or that give you the option to toggle to a first person perspective, like the more recent Fallouts.

Obviously for the squad based combat in a game like Baldur's Gate, you need that top down perspective in order to see everything and make tactical decisions. But I would prefer a camera system like in Dragon Age Origins which usually stays "over the shoulder" but pulls back for combat. You can kind of zoom the camera in BG3 when you're just walking around, but it's definitely fiddly. And it's a shame, because the graphics are great. The game would definitely look good more zoomed in.

It occurs to me that, in light of his discovery about Shang Qinghua's true nature and relationship to the world, and of his own place within all this, Mobei-jun's probably going to become just a touch insufferable, though not in the way he usually is. Like, the biggest hurdle to the Moshang relationship from his perspective is that he's never, ever been able to get a solid read on this weird servant of his. Mobei-jun can't figure it out for himself, Shang Qinghua refuses to explain himself or ask for anything other than his own life even as he makes himself indispensable and pulls off these amazing acts of service, but he also seems terrified of Mobei-jun a lot of the time, and, frankly, yeah, I'd be confused and irritable as heck after a couple decades of mixed signals like this too. And that's on top of having some very well-founded and (given his life experiences) extremely understandable trust issues.

(Because, while Airplane is genuinely my favorite, I can also acknowledge that, from Mobei-jun's perspective, he probably looks shadier than Reigan from MP100.)

Except now? Now. Now Mobei-jun knows why Shang Qinghua's always been so squirrely and secretive, why he's always been devoted to Mobei-jun even while terrified of him, why he never responds to Mobei-jun's overt courting tactics in spite of seeming to find him attractive... he's got all the pieces. Including that absolute, most important of pieces:

Shang Qinghua loves him best. Shang Qinghua has always loved him best.

I think that knowledge makes him melt a bit. Not because of who or what Shang Qinghua is, but because Mobei-jun finally, finally understands this strange little man, and that means it's finally safe to trust him, fully and completely.

Of course this makes our favorite popsicle melt a bit. And, when popsicles melt a bit, it's only natural that they get a little sticky.

Which is to say Airplane is never going to have to worry about touch-starvation again, because he's going to be getting all the hugs and cuddles and pats (and affectionate (and very careful) slaps and pinches, because Mobei-jun's doing his best to respect boundaries but he's still a demon and this is part of their culture, society, and nature (and also because Airplane has come to the conclusion that if Mobei-jun gets to have a go at his cheeks every now and then, then Airplane gets to smack the butt in retaliation, and Mobei-jun has yet to disabuse him of this notion)). Also just picked up and carried around sometimes, because Qinghua's legs are so short and he works so hard, it is unfitting to make him work extra to keep up with Mobei-jun (which is definitely the only reason he's doing this, not because he just wants to carry Qinghua around like his favorite cuddle toy just because he can, really).

There's at least one Peak Lord meeting that Shang Qinghua arrives to via Mobei-jun carrying him there bridal style. This is also the meeting where everyone has to deal with the fact that Shang shidi has a demon king hugging his waist while laying his head in Shang shidi's lap, because Qinghua needed to attend this meeting, but Mobei-jun wasn't ready to stop cuddling yet.

And when everyone makes extremely reasonable noises about maybe not having a demon king in attendance while they went over private sect affairs and maybe Mobei-jun should leave, the giant brat just looks at them all with one eye and says, "No, I'm his favorite." And then closes his eye again and proceeds to ignore them all in favour of sticking his face in Qinghua's stomach and having a nap.

Meaning now they all have to live with the knowledge that Shang shidi is the most important being in the world and what his taste in men is like.

Shang shidi going, "I mean... he's right, and also I've been telling him stuff about these meetings for years and also, like... you can't really stop me." does not help.

Weirdly as an Armand stan, I feel like Armand should have been...worse.

Maybe worse/better isn't putting it right.

He should have been scarier.

The Armand I think of as the "real" Armand is the one we got in 2.05. So I know they know he's like that. It isn't exactly that he's evil, but when he hurts, when he's frightened, when he's cornered, he becomes something wild and vicious. Even when he's calm, there's a cold ruthlessness to him when dealing with people he doesn't care about.

So what the fuck is up with this wishy-washy betrayal?

The narrative as displayed on the show:

-Armand realizes he and Louis don't share values, so they need to break up. -The coven confronts Armand with the trial script and give him an ultimatum (disputed in fandom, never contradicted on the show). -Armand chooses loyalty to the coven and directs the play, bowing to their wishes. There are people who overestimate the role of a director and assume this means he engineered the entire thing, but see the problems in the next section below. -The tribunal is going to kill both Claudia and Louis. -The tribunal just kills Claudia. Lestat saves Louis. -Armand is demoted and punished (confirmed by Assad). -Armand, perhaps because of guilt, rescues Louis from the wall and urges him to leave Paris. -Armand makes the split-second decision to lie about saving Louis at the trial. This ends up saving his life. He lets Louis kill everyone in the coven (presumably because he's gotten a good look at how fickle they are toward him). -Louis chooses to continue their romance to spite Lestat, who keeps Armand's secret. -Daniel exposes the fact that Armand was free to choose Louis the entire time, that he was never in danger, and he chose the coven instead.

Things that have been said by Assad that contradict this version of events:

-Claudia "had to go" because she was in the way of what Armand wanted. Thing is, Armand wanted Louis, and he was going to let Louis die, so this makes no sense. -Armand "engineered" the "deaths" of Claudia and Louis both. No motive is presented to us. Moreover, there's genuinely nothing in the show that suggests this as opposed to Armand being strong-armed by a coven he lost control over. That version of events is never contradicted in the show.

And here's the thing: if I had my way, Armand would be the force behind it all, because having him fold to his own coven makes him the very opposite of scary. He'd never do it in the books. FFS, in the books, he slaughtered more than half of his last coven in a fit of madness (and I am convinced it's one of the things he blatantly lied about in 2.03). But to see what's actually presented on the show and to hear Rolin talk, they were deeply concerned with him remaining as empathetic as possible, so it looks to me like they did that by simply making him (/plays guitar) ANEMIC ROYALTYYYYY instead of a wild little gremlin. Instead of being empathetic, he's just pathetic. Instead of making the connection between Armand's history and his present behavior, the average viewer says, "That's just how he is. He lies about everything. Who knows why. He doesn't need a reason."

I can't help but feel this season should have ended with the average viewer saying "Oh he's crazy crazy." Which they kind of said of 2.05, but by the time 2.08 rolls around, they've sort of forgotten that side of him (which isn't a side, really, it's what lies beneath the mask).

And I mean, Armand in the books is definitely prone to bouts of self-pity. That's how people react when their trauma goes unvalidated. It's not playing the victim, either, he really does feel that way.

Maybe they're counting on next season to give context to both Lestat and Armand? It would make sense for Lestat to be the one to give real perspective on Armand, because Louis doesn't really know him and Armand himself is too guarded to be forthcoming. Lestat has seen Armand at his worst, but, at least in the books, he has a crippling amount of compassion for him as well.

I just...I need the gremlin. I need him to be terrifying, because only then can he turn around and be weird. He's endearing in DM because people looked at the "uncomprehending villain" of the last two books and saw him stuffing packs of cigarettes down the garbage disposal, laughing till he cried at movies, and quizzing Daniel about why war happens because he's never understood all that shit. That last was the moment I fell for him. He understands the vampiric instinct to kill, but humans don't have that. Humans just kill and maim each other anyway. The vampire who caused so much destruction asking, "What is the physical need to destroy?"

The innocence hidden beneath the cruelty and violence.

The writers know that innocence exists, but the innocence means very little if he isn't legitimately cruel and violent. If he doesn't make hard choices in the name of survival when the issue at hand isn't a matter of survival. If people don't suffer because he thinks suffering is what everyone does all the time anyway.

They know the cruelty exists, because they showed it in 2.05. They know exactly how to write an Armand who isn't pretending to be normal.

I just worry they've undermined what makes Armand so special as a character in their quest to keep him empathetic.

"No, not at all," Katsuki gave you one of his rare smiles behind your back, just wishing he could come up to you - hug you from behind and give you a kiss, "I'll just quickly take a shower and then we eat, okay?"

A mere five minutes later, because Katsuki was too excited to take his time and rushed to the shower as quick as he humanly could, the two of you were sitting at the dinner table (gosh, Katsuki's mind would replay this day in his mind for months) and you served him a bowl of a Ramen-variation. Katsuki was prepared to act like this was the best-tasting meal in the whole world, just to see you smile at him, but what he was not prepared for was that after his first bite, his mouth exploded with flavour. Any normal person would have started crying at this point from the spicey goddess that just happened in his mouth, but Katsuki was more than used to this so he enjoyed it immensely. It was probably one of the best spicey Ramens he had ever tried - a main factor in this probably being that you made it.

You looked at him with a worried gaze as you were biting on your lip, waiting for his reaction: "It's too mild is it? I knew I should have added more spices," you sighed, looking disappointed in yourself, so Katsukio quickly stopped those doubts.

"It's perfect, really, this is just right. I was just surprised that you made it this Spicey, I mean, I know that you are a bit more sensitive with your puny, little tastebuds," Katsuki teased you a little bit and you blushed as you smiled a bit cheekily.

"I actually made a bowl without most spices just for me, but I wanted to do something nice for you for once - you're always doing so much for me and I wanted to."

Love pulsed in Katsuki's heart. This was the exact moments he was living for. This had to mean you loved him back, why else would you do something so amazing for him? Katsuki never had any doubts that the two of you were meant for each other - after all, you were even born on the same day, brought into this world together to live in this world together - but now he was even more sure than ever and maybe he would actually tell you what he was feeling soon. Maybe...

Armand could definitely 100% have prevented Claudia and Madeline’s death like obviously he is so full of shit 😭😭 he just chose not to. I dont think he was lying about being held captive, though. It seems more likely to me that he allowed himself to be imprisoned bcus the ultimate outcome would be desirable, rather then like, he was secretly orchestrating it all like a devious Master mind and was only pretending to be a prisoner to trick Louis. I think Armand was genuinely being imprisoned, but he could have easily escaped (as if the vampire Armand couldn’t win in a fight against Sam The Twink), and chose not to because it’s in his best interest for Claudia and Madeline to die 😭. While part of his betrayal I think comes from a comfort Armand takes in learned helplessness, where taking action feels less safe then leaning into victimhood, so armand chooses to accept helplessness rather then play the hero bcus helplessness is comforting, it was also definitely part “I want these two people to be gone from my life and this seems like a sure fire way to let it happen while I get to remain mostly blameless” 😭. Armand finds Claudia’s whole existence horrific and cruel. I don’t think he particularly likes or dislikes her as a person, he doesn’t seem to know her very well nor care to know her (he actually says this in tva lol), so I don’t think he considered letting her a die an act of spite.

Armand thought of Claudia as a suffering, rabid, sick and diseased animal that needed to be put down for its own well being. He considered her death an inevitable tragedy that “could not be prevented”, and bcus of his perspective on vampirism as a horrible curse that can only be spared through very specific very calculated and clean cut means, he wanted her death to come as quick and painlessly as possible. From Armand’s perspective, if he saved Claudia from death by execution, he’d only end up watching her excruciatingly loose her mind and self until she eventually killed herself or got put down by Armand or someone else Nicki style so that she wouldnt need to live in agony anymore.

Which, his whole perspective there is flawed, and fucked up, and dehumanizing of Claudia, but it makes sense why he would think that way. Armand considers vampirism to be always bad, regardless of the subject turned, and always smth he would hate to inflict on someone. So claudias turning, is not only cruel to Armand, but unforgivable and unsalvageable. He’s seen a lot of fucked up vampires in his time, a lot of botched turnings, and he knows from his experience how much of a toll vampirism takes on anyone, let alone someone in the body of a child. His whole “I will never turn someone into a vampire ever in my life” thing comes from this. So, of course he won’t save claudia from such a clean cut, blameless death 😭. He considers it an act of mercy, when he pictures the alternative as “Claudia clings to Madeline as she painfully looses her mind and eventually dies”. Which, comes into why he didn’t save Madeline either lol

Armand doesn’t particularly value life as smth to be worth preserving, he is very willing to view other ppl as commodities when it helps him. But he does value preserving peace and limiting other’s suffering (which is why he kills so gently). Armand is so horrified by Madeline being turned, partly bcus I think he saw himself in her. He sees a fledgling who he believes will inevitably loose her maker, the only person she rlly cares about, to horrible gruesome death, and he knows that once she experiences that her life as an immortal will be cruel and unbearable. So once she is turned, Armand sees another lost cause who will be better off if she is killed before it can get bad. What Armand misses when it comes to Claudia and Madeline, obviously, is that they r more resilient and self sufficient then he sees, and taking away their agency by deciding they have no hope and must die isn’t the mercy he sees it as but is actually like, fucked up and horrible. Armand is so blinded by his trauma fueled dog eat dog view of life as a vampire that he can’t see that.

I think the reason armand considers the perks of Claudia and Madeline’s death a priority over Louis’s happiness (and horrible grief that will ensue when his loved ones die), is bcus Armand considers Claudia and Madeline’s death an inevitable consequence of Louis’s unforgivably cruel actions. He doesn’t resent Louis for it I don’t think, but he definitely thinks that Louis will need to atone for what he’s done whether Armand wants him to or not. So, Armand is ok with Louis grieving (as long as it doesn’t turn to resentment of Armand), bcus it was ultimately inevitable, and comparatively less cruel then what he would have to witness alternatively. It’s a rip the Band aid off type of thing 😭😭

in conclusion uh Armand is bad but Armand has his reasons and Armand isn’t one dimensionally villainous, he has a ton of complex trauma induced reasons for the way he thinks, and his actions r more often then not coming from a warped view of “the kind thing to do” that comes from his lack of understanding of how kind the world actually is and can be (dog eat dog mindest etc), bcus of how horribly traumatized he is. thank u good night

oh bless you - uh, not a lot. i don't think the comics gave me a lot to work with, on that front. i think when i was reading it i kept thinking "how long is this one gonna last before inevitable double cross / untimely death / off screen break-up" and turns out the latter happened. sorry val.

so my own cynicism meant i never got too attached to val. because i knew we weren't going to be seeing them for very long. nothing in a deadpool series endures. and i'm so frustrated that wong's deadpool run was a 10 issue thing. because it was over and done before i even started enjoying it.

for me it takes a long time to get attached to a deadpool - because every wade wilson is different. they have their own thing going on. wong's wade is softer. more childlike. very childlike. actually, almost irritatingly childlike. like thats his whole thing. he's s child.

that was off-putting for me. he didn't feel like the kind of deadpool i'm interested in reading. he felt like the softer, cuter fanon-interpretation of deadpool. which i guess goes over well with fans who love their baby girl. but i... eeh. i can't bear it. he's not a baby. and i'm not a baby either. stop feeding me baby food.

i think - in my head - when wade acts like a baby, there's an angle to it. i don't think he's sincere. he does it so enemies will undermine him, or to win favour with the audience - there's an angle. he's not sincerely that naive. he's smart. so - when i see him acting like that - sincerely - i can't feel like he's being sincere at all. he's smarter than that. he's doing it on purpose. so - so... i don't know, i never felt like we were getting a sincere wade, in this series. he never turns the baby act off. we don't get a peek behind the curtain. i think that's the thing with wade lately - i keep expecting an eventual peek behind the curtain so i can say "oh. there he is. there's the deadpool i know. he was doing it on purpose. he was acting shallow and cutesy just to sell books and the real deadpool was lurking behind there all the time," but it hasn't happened with any deadpool media at all, lately, save for the recent kelly dp/w wiiii book - (once again, thank you kelly, owe you my life, only man pulling his WEIGHT around here) - maybe my expectations are just too high for wade, in that i'm doomed to be disappointed by like, 90% of deadpool media.

i feel like maybe wong could've done something if they'd had more time with it. but for me, man, i didn't get anything out of it, or any kind of attachment to it. and i felt so disappointed. especially with it being a nonbinary author, and a nonbinary love interest for a character i've so long headcanoned as nonbinary. i just - i wanted more from it. i always write from a nonbinary angle - because i don't know how to write from any other perspective. it comes out in everything i write. so i was expecting something more like that. i was expecting it to come through - not in some overt way - but in small ways that i could read and appreciate. like the matrix. that's a trans story. there are no overtly trans characters in it but it's a trans story with lots of trans allegory to digest and the authors are trans. but - you know, not being trans, it's not immediately obvious. but it's there. food to eat. and chew. and digest.

i know marvel definitely wouldn't let wong get away with much - but, god almighty. i was hoping even for something subtle. some little crumbs of food that brought some new dimension to wade that i could sink my teeth into. or something interesting about val that i could get attached to, in spite of the relationship being rushed and quick and abrupt.

i'm not saying it had to be a nonbinary story but - like, man. it feels like, conceptually, i should get excited, and i should sing more praises to this series, but what it feels like more, to me, is a wasted opportunity, and val is another love interest that readers failed to get attached to, and another in a consistent line of deadpool's love interests that marvel rushes to forget and move on from. and... sighs. sighs.

i do want more from valentine. because i feel like they're such a wasted opportunity, and i don't want to throw away one of marvel's only non-binary characters. that's too much food to waste. i think - for me, at least, i think wade deserves healthy relationships. ones that aren't always necessarily romantic - and - well, him having someone to go on cute zoo dates and hang out and be unapologetically gender with - well, i'm all about that.

Edit: Erased mention of the show from this post even if it was originally criticism because in hindsight, I want to avoid mentioning it at all due to the boycott.

What makes the Broken Trio (Annabeth, Thalia, and Luke) so impactful is that their bond is in stark contrast to the individual relationships the three share with their real families. Annabeth went thoroughly neglected by her father and absentee mother. The same for Luke, saddled with a mother who was tragically unavailable whether she wanted to be or not, and a father who never stepped in. And for Thalia, she never knew where she stood with her mother. Did Beryl love her daughter for her, or did she love her because she was proof of Zeus' favor. Did she truly care about Thalia--because from a little girl's perspective, she surely couldn't have cared about Jason all that much, trading his life to Hera in order to save her own--or did she just see her as a bargaining chip for immortality? And is that what love is? Later on, the same sentiment would apply to Zeus as well. Did he save her because he cared for her or because he thought she could be brought back to control the prophecy in his name?

All three of these kids were given nothing but conditional love. They all suffered under the weight of their desires to prove themselves to their parents whether out of spite (Luke, and Thalia to an extent) or love (Annabeth), because that was the only way they'd get the gods' attention, let alone their affection.

That's why it's so so important that when they came across each other and decided to form their own family, they chose to break this pattern. Luke stuck with Thalia knowing she was a magnet for danger with a huge target on her back. Thalia ignored Hal and Zoë's warnings, trusting Luke solely off who he had shown himself to be. And both of them looked at Annabeth, knowing she would slow them down--she was seven, how could she not--and decided to bring her along anyway because she deserved better and if her family wouldn't step up, they would.

These weren't rational decisions because family isn't meant to be rational and they're not Athena. They don't want to be. And we see this emotionality reflected in their choices throughout. Ever logical, strategic Annabeth believes in Luke even when she shouldn't because a long time back, he chose her when he didn't need to. There's a million different interpretations of Luke because, let's face it, his character was messy and inconsistent in canon, but what ultimately sets him apart from the gods or titans is a genuine care for his family, even if he stomps all over it at times. For Thalia, even after Luke poisoned her tree, she maintained faith in him right until the last moment on the mountain. Her breaking point was when he hurt Annabeth, leading her to purge all the good parts of Luke from her memory, forcing herself to only think about the betrayal so she could do what she believed was necessary to protect Annabeth. Not that I don't think she made the right call, but I do think this was far more of an emotional reaction than a purely practical one, which is further emphasized by how Percy (the neutral party, the outsider to this family) had to look at Luke empathetically and from both sides to make his final choice (@ruegarding has a fantastic meta on this that you should definitely check out).

Anyway, the point is: unlike the gods, these three did not perpetuate conditional love towards each other. It's essential that they saw each other, hurt and lonely, and chose to care, which is why it hurts so much when that found family breaks, and why it's the central piece that resolves everything in the end.

dc might not like to address how they've unofficially retconned a lot of jasons original robin run to end up being absolutely classist, but i most certainly will bring it up whenever i can. while this is definitely narrative criticism, it is more of a study, as i am not expecting anyone, readers or dc, to really change how they view the todds.

jason goes from being a rather reserved, kind and genuinely friendly child to an angry and cruel boy who was contemplating murder at some point (batman: urban legends). not to mention willis going from an absent but well meaning man who turned to crime to support his family to now being an abusive father and husband. catherine todd was originally stated to have died from overdose, but was later confirmed in death in the family to pass away from cancer, so while the 'poor addict mother' stereotype still applies, it is more complicated in her case.

it is no surprise that in modern tellings, all three of them represent very realistic forms of poverty. willis the abusive criminal, catherine the addict (her battle with cancer is always noticeably left out) and jason the violent child left to repeat the cycle.

dc simply couldn't allow the todd family to remain poor but an all in all good family (though i am careful to say they were perfect, past or present, since depending how you read him, willis can still be seen as a bad father and horrible husband), and instead had to dramatise negative stereotypes of poor people in order to really perpetuate the existence of jason being the "angry" robin. this mostly comes down to dc perhaps wanting to bury older comics featuring the original characterisation (since the only way to read them is through piracy), and there is no better way to do that than make his current characterisation nothing like his old one, at all.

after all, how else can we ensure readers are aware of how angry, evil and emotionally unstable jason todd is, if not making his life the pinnacle of why poor people are terrible and should not have kids? dc is not trying to hide it at all, it's almost laughable.

while the blatant classism is very clearly the biggest issue, from a storytelling perspective it is also really disappointing. deconstructing catherine and willis todd to their morally reprehensible, abusive and neglectful 2d personalities in modern telling leaves a massive gap is what made jason so personable as robin. personally, i also think it takes away how homelessness and his own poverty seperate from his family might have affected jason's morals and opinions on certain topics — another aspect of his character that is very important but often undeveloped.

especially with jason; making him having always been this quick to rage and violent child/robin takes away the true devastation of his death and subsequent revival. he died an innocent, damaged and complicated but caring boy, and came back vengeful and spiteful. he is a boy who has suffered a lot in life, with a sick mother he had to provide for due to his absent father, who also died due to a life of crime — and yet jason broke free from the cycle and became something more.

he loved to learn, to go to school, to play sports and to help people. he loved being a hero, even when it got tough, and though sometimes it was hard to remember, he always tried to stay on the bright side of things.

it's one of the main reasons bruce is so unable to process and accept his son's return, because to him, the person who came back is not the son he lost. though, that is another conversation entirely.

on the one hand however, i can see why jason's current life story might be more appealing to certain readers (and depending on the work, fanon or canon, it can makes more sense). since now that he's broken out of the cycle of abuse, he can use his strength to protect other vulnerable people. the true 'people's hero' in a way batman and other adjacent vigilantes can not be.

it is just a little regrettable that to fulfill this, he and his family must adhere to classist stereotypes to make it more believable. after all, jason was very much the 'people's robin' even without all the retcons to his character. he has always stood up for people who couldn't do it themselves.

I’m gonna have to disagree with you that Kaos is any better than LO. It’s all the same bull crap.

Kaos just seems like live-action LO, both having a boring storyline with bad or fetishized characterizations of the Greek Gods and figures, and both looking artistically beautiful and some cool concepts, but badly executed. The only difference is that Kaos has more LGBTQIA+ themes than LO, has a tiny bit more Greek references, and gets much darker. That’s pretty much it.

As a Greek who studies our myths and stories extensively, I’m tired of the west trying to take and rearrange our stories and retell them ‘with a modern, western lense’. It’s exhausting and infuriating.

It’s time the west gets over its fascination with us and move on.

Fair opinion! Honestly, the initial post I made about it was after only watching the first couple episodes. Now that I've finished it, I can definitely see actual glaring issues with it, both in their characterizations as well as in how they kind of lose the intrigue after a few episodes of the setting and elements of them being gods. Which are all issues that LO have as well.

Though I will say, LO has those issues far more than Kaos does, but what really separates LO from Kaos, in my opinion - the creators of Kaos aren't pretending that Kaos is more than it is. To me, Kaos isn't in any way a singular Greek myth retelling, more so a fun "Greek epic" style story featuring the gods in a modern setting, the way LO could have been if Rachel hadn't tried to make it into something bigger than it was (and if she didn't put herself on a pedestal as a "self proclaimed folklorist"). I can watch Kaos and appreciate it as a fun Greek myth inspired piece of media because that's pretty much all it's trying to be. Meanwhile LO gives us middle-school-level writing with very little real Greek myth influence (aside from what it benefits Rachel to do so) that even goes so far as to outright disrespect the myths that they were based on... all the while people praise it as the greatest Greek myth retelling ever.

I think Kaos is miles better than LO because it at least tells a more coherent story than LO ever could have, with a lot more attention paid to the stylization of a Greek epic (compared to LO which tried and failed to implement those same things, such as the Fates, self-fulfilling prophecies, and witty narration as to retell a story that's already happened).

Granted, that story still takes a lot of liberties with the source material (some that I enjoyed, others not so much), but in that regard, I refer to the above - Kaos isn't trying to be an actual retelling like LO did, so I view it the same way I do as something like Hercules or Hades, where the people who made it clearly love Greek myth and wanted to do some Greek myth-inspired story with their own twists on the narratives, and it paid off in a story that, in spite of their flaws, still feels intentional and thought out.

LO, by comparison, is just a mess of ripped off half-baked ideas thrown at a wall and filled in with self-fulfilling power fantasy garbage written by someone who claims to have deeper knowledge of the myths but clearly doesn't. It's hard to enjoy LO in spite of its flaws because it's all flaws and they're so deeply-rooted in the context of Rachel's own biases and sexual preferences that you really can't separate it from that once you know if it.

I do have some criticisms of Kaos and some of its more creative choices - Hera cheating on Zeus with Poseidon (literally wtf lmao), Persephone still being the "I went down there willingly!" archetype (though at least she's not 19 in this, the casting for her and Hades was great), as well as the fact that things weren't wrapped up by the end of the first season which really bums me out because now it's up to the mercy of Netflix to give it that second season - but ultimately, from a story-writing perspective, Kaos absolutely did accomplish having an actual narrative with themes and goal-driven writing that LO failed in having. That comparison doesn't make Kaos a 100% perfect show without flaw, but I made the comparison initially anyways because much of what I enjoyed in Kaos was what I expected from LO (and ultimately didn't get).

That's just my own two cents though! And I need to make it clear - I am not a Greek person! I have no say or merit within the discussion regarding Greek myth and how it's been appropriated!! - so ultimately... my opinion of these things really aren't as valuable as someone who actually is Greek or studied heavily in it.

So that said, I can completely see the merit in your own arguments that a lot of these "modern retellings" tend to miss the point of the stories they're trying to retell (esp with the criticisms I outlined above) and are often chewed up through a Western lens. The lesser of two evils is still evil. But if we're purely talking Kaos vs. Lore Olympus here as modern entertainment that are both attempting similar things... I'd be way more likely to rewatch and recommend one over the other. Plus there are a lot of adaptions out there made by Westerners / non-Greeks that are incredible and are, at the very least, amazing stepping stones into the world of Greek myth for those who want to learn more about it. Out of the pool of ongoing modern Greek myth retellings/inspired works - Blood of Zeus, Hades/Hades 2, Kaos, Epic: The Musical, Hadestown, Hercules, Percy Jackson & The Olympians, and Lore Olympus - it's not hard to guess which one I'd be the least likely to recommend as gateways into Greek mythology. If those titles were organized in a list of best to worst, Kaos isn't at the top of that list, but it's sure as shit higher than LO 💀😆

Anything you're especially proud to have accomplished this year before the new one rolls upon us?

TRUTHFULLY a lot of my accomplishments were relatively small compared to my ambitions but in the grand scheme of things add up to a lot of meaningful life improvements and successes i think. i dont know if there's like ONE BIG THING i'm especially proud of. a lot of the big stuff i WANTED to do got pretty delayed for one reason or another. but, as for small stuff:

i started an even SOMEWHAT regular exercise routine and have managed to hit the end of the year without dropping it completely, despite occasional slowdown

i got my name legally changed

though it was a bit of a bait-and-switch in terms of intentional production value, we DID technically put out an episode of SRTF this year. we even shadowdropped it, and it has received a ton of praise in spite of itself.

in terms of streams, i genuinely think this was the best year for stream quality and consistency i have ever had. with absolute banger playthroughs like Tears of the Kingdom, Spider-Man 2, Dragon Quest 8, Resident Evil 4, etc. i think i really raised the bar for myself.

and oh shit speaking of, i did my first marathon charity stream this year and raised over $10K for AHA

i made a lot of progress on my art!! made an honest effort to pick it back up and i genuinely think my work at the end of the year compared to where it was is a subtle but noticeable bump, though i did fall off a bit more than i intended.

and though i don't have MUCH to show for it right now tangibly, i have been working a lot in the back of my mind and in various documents on some Actual Fiction that i hope to be able to sink my teeth into more next year.

and yeah there's definitely a lot more small stuff in between! it's tough because i still feel so behind on a lot of stuff that i feel like should have been a lot higher priority for me, but if i'm giving myself credit it definitely puts into perspective just how Not Totally Washed i am when i start to list stuff out. which is nice to be able to do! everything in its time i suppose! im not starting 2024 with any "resolutions" or anything quite as high stakes per se but i do have a large list of goals im still gonna be working towards. i think the main thing i really want to nail down is prioritizing my time and energy towards the things that are gonna make the biggest impact on my own personal satisfaction so it becomes easier to feel like i wasn't just coasting for 12 months.

And to be honest, here's where the overemphasis on Majima in Yakuza Kiwami completely spoils that game for me. I have seen people meme about the fact that the reason Majima crashes a huge truck into the building is because Kiryu saw him get shot and fall into the pier and then just went "well anyway" and left, because that's what immediately precedes this scene in Kiwami. And while that is a really funny meme in the context of Kiwami, it kind of terrifies me to think that to some people they legitimately and sincerely believe that Majima is motivated by spite against Kiryu leaving him shot and having fallen into the water after their co-op fight together in this scene.

Because again, you have to put Yakuza 0 and Kiwami out of your mind when looking at this. Majima has THREE scenes in the entire game. His initial meeting with Kiryu where he nearly murders one of his own subordinates because he disrespected Kiryu. Then their fight scene in the batting cages. That second scene ends with Majima getting stabbed. It would NOT BE UNREASONABLE to think that Majima's role in the story is over and he's not coming back and may have even died. You do not see nor hear about Majima AT FUCKING ALL for SIX CHAPTERS which is hours and hours of gameplay and other plot revelations taking place.

Then OUT OF FUCKING NOWHERE, he crashes a FUCKING SEMI TRUCK into a building. Think about this shit from Majima's perspective. The dude JUST got out of the hospital after being stabbed in the gut by his own henchmen. He hears "hey, someone saw Kiryu go into that prostitution joint." And his reaction to hearing about Kiryu's location is to take TWO FLAT BED TRUCKS and drive them INTO THE FUCKING BUILDING. Driving one of them himself.

THIS GUY IS A FUCKING LUNATIC.

Then when you finally run into Majima for the pre-boss fight cutscene, this is what happens.

Again I stress this: dismiss Yakuza 0 from your mind. Makoto does not exist. Saejima does not exist. This is ALL that Majima is and ever has been.

the dude crashed a flatbed truck into a building because he heard Kiryu was in there and he wanted to fight him. He proceeds to creep on some prostitute, which frankly you'd expect from a guy with this track record. He beats his own men to death because they don't laugh along with him. You'd DEFINITELY assume he's the kind of guy who'd do lecherous things to a woman at knife point.

But she says "naw sorry G, I already have a boyfriend." To which Majima says "a'ight, coo =) " and just let's her go. Kiryu is LEGITIMATELY SHOCKED BY THIS. Despite referring to Majima as "Majima-no-nii-san" which is a highly respectful address, he clearly assumed Majima was the kind of dirt bag who would have taken liberties. But he's not. He likes honest people. That's why he genuinely likes Kiryu so much.

Majima became a popular and beloved character entirely off the back of three scenes in this game, and because his voice actor Johnny Depp Jack Sparrow-ed the performance. Over ten years worth of developing as a character which culminated in finally becoming a playable character in Yakuza 0, news which set the world on fire because holy shit finally a REAL Yakuza game where Majima is playable(!?!?!). And I just think it's important to keep appropriate context in mind.

Majima didn't crash the trucks into Shangri-La because Kiryu saw him get shot and fall into the pier and then just dipped and he was kind of salty about Kiryu abandoning him. I really kind of resent Kiwami for creating the perception of Majima that it does. Because in this first game? Majima is KIND OF supposed to be SCARY. And nobody is ever EVER going to think he's scary after playing 0 and then Kiwami.

This will also not be the last time that Majima thinks "I'll just crash a truck into it" will be the perfect solution to a problem btw.

summary: Alex knows how to hold a grudge, moving on from a break up? What a foreign concept!

The cold of the grassland with its cutting pink winter wasn’t as cold as Alex. Grudge was an understatement, but to an extent it was valid. That’s what y/n thought and considered. After an ugly parting and hurt that she inflicted upon him she took accountability in accepting his harsh behavior. It wasn’t harsh per se it was just a lot of nothings. Harsh nothings. She tried to avoid it as much as he tried to avoid her but working together just made it worse. An exhibit about to follow as y/n, against her better judgement tried to join a conversation.

She felt invited enough to do so as Richard greeted her with an obnoxiously cheerful “good morning!” amidst his ongoing conversation with Alex. Choosing to ignore Alex’s evident indifference he waved her over “y/n!”

“Morning” she greeted in general to the both of them timidly looking at Alex to see if he would react with as much as a nod of acknowledgement but it was worse well, he didn’t even look in her direction even though she was right there.

“Yeah no you can go about it however you like…” Alex briefed to Richard about their conversation continuing it as if y/n hadn’t been invited to the conversation and she was just standing there dumbfounded.

“I was just telling him about making some changes in the camera operation, you know wide angle or zooming in from the writer’s perspective if he’d like it.” Richard filled in y/n on the context of the conversation since alex was rather rude about it. He definitely took a note of that.

“Right” y/n nodded attentively, playing it cool that it didn’t bother how Alex was acting. It had been just a week since the shoot began, dismissing her hi’s in the hotel lobby, scoffing or rolling her eyes at her in casual conversations, making it hugely evident how much he disliked being in her radius. It was all remotely digestive she was prepared for such spitefulness but instead of removing himself from the situation he was just giving her a hard time. It was getting increasingly embarrassing in front of the whole crew.

“For the second verse, before it begins we were thinking of adding a god’s eye shot-” Richard said showing y/n the script in his hands as he looked at alex, trying to make her feel inclusive to the conversation.

“What’s a god’s eye shot?” Alex asked stopping Richard midway.

“You don’t know what’s a god’s eye shot?” Richard asked having a bit of Hollywood condescension in his tone having worked cameras and directions for most of his career he considered it a common knowledge for most. Clearly not the songwriter.

Jumping in to save Alex having to fall small against Richard patronizing him y/n answered “Its basically like an aerial shot of a camera zooming out. Its also called a bird’s eye shot. It’s a perspective to make the watcher-“ Y/n tried to explain it to him casually as if it wasn’t a big deal that he didn’t know that.

Alex interrupted her almost immediately, “Sounds fine.” He replied to Richard as if he was the one who just explained him about the shot and not y/n. Disregarding her helpful set of tone as well like he truly couldn’t care less.

“Are you sure?” Richard asked to confirm he wasn’t just trying to cut the conversation short to spite y/n.

“Look mate, this is your job. Making the song is my job, this music video is your job.” Alex explained assertively as he crossed his arms. Y/n nodded as if he was talking to her, her nonchalance irritated him very much. “I wouldn’t like it if you told me how to make a song” he said and for the first time through this entire interaction he looked at y/n, “you know like in any relationship, you wouldn’t like if you were told what you felt, if you were told what’s hurting what’s not. You’d want to decide that for yourself no?” he had a piercing gaze, entitled even, towards y/n as he talked to her through Richard. “So I wouldn’t want to tell you how to do your job…do what you feel right.” He said to Richard patting his shoulder as he exited leaving both y/n and Richard speechless.

As Alex left with his last word y/n was left looking down at the grass as if it were the most interesting thing. Somewhat with shame too, through Alex’s scold like bitter conversation. “He’s clearly not over it.” Richard remarked hugging his clipboard.

Scoffing y/n looked up and watched Alex leave, “Yeah…this is such bullshit.” She said averting her gaze back to Richard to not risk being caught looking at Alex for long. “didn’t your PR team think this through, we’re not even together anymore this would look so awful.”

“Any publicity is good publicity for them” Richard explained with a shrug, “and originally Alex did want you for the music video so there’s that…” trailing off.

“That’s six months ago.” Y/n said her voice laced with slight agitation after and through that interaction. Referring to the timeline of before their breakup. ‘Originally’ like how Richard said Alex wanted her for the music video. She had stopped working for her projects for two months since the Emmy fiasco. Alex had assigned her to work with his team for the music video, back then before the album was out. Alex wanted to help her through it, he wanted her to resume acting through a comfortable setting if he would be on set with her it would be the best way for her to ease back into her job. Ironically enough after all this time, his presence was making being on set insufferable for her.

“No” Richard shook his head, confused how she didn’t know so far “Even after that.” He told her unsure if being subjected to tell her this would help her somehow. “Since you two broke this song is like writer’s heaven for him right? So he said and I quote, ‘She is the devil of my writer’s heaven so why not.’ But he was subtle with it.”

“wait what?” y/n asked wide eyed and really surprised he would say that “He called me the devil?!” sometimes she wondered if she was pre-existingly scared of confrontations or was growing to scared of them but she could not find it in herself to go graceful about this newfound information.

“Not figuratively.” Richard defended the bluntness of how he relayed that onto her.

“The devil though? He called me that?” She asked not being over the insult used as an adverb. Emphasizing on ‘that’ as her eyes widened in horror, more and more she contemplated that word.

“Look that’s besides the point…” Richard trailed off in a comforting way to tell her otherwise “he wanted you here even after the break up and is now acting passive aggressive to you?”

“Maybe he hasn’t had closure” y/n said crossing her arms, tightening them around her with her jacket to withstand the cold wind. Given how awful she felt around him in addition to the devil comment she hadn’t had closure herself.

“I don’t think so, he is growing way too friendly with literally every woman you see with him. Just in six months.” Richard, said with a dramatic scoff, undoubtedly on y/n’s side through the vague black and white of their break up.

“is he now?” She asked raising a brow, growing increasingly uncomfortable at the validness of Alex’s grudge. If he had it in himself to move on as such why was he being such a passive aggressive jerk to her. The newfound confusion was quick to crumble itself as she recalled his crying face from the night of their break up. “You know its fine, he’s supposed to move on…I’ve done so to.”

“If you say so.”

The whole day grew worse with zero productiveness, getting all ready for the shot, preparing the shot itself was such a hustle in itself. A heavy downpour caused the production for that day to shut down altogether. The sun was below horizon way earlier than city sunset timings. Tidying herself out of her character clothes and makeup after spending almost the entire day in them, only to do nothing, y/n was in her car in her usual off screen attire again. Overwhelmed with the day’s outcome and all the thoughts which had hours worth of free time to marinate into depressive keep-you-up-at-night ones. Sighing she leant on the steering wheel with her head on her forearm relaxing before the godawful snow covered road back to the hotel. By mistake she must have had reverse gear set, in an already spinning life she didn’t notice her car pull back. Until a mall thud into the car behind her in the parking lot she came back to her senses and quickly pulled breaks. No alarm went off so she thought it must be a curb, regardless she never parked that gracefully so she was used to hitting curbs. “Are you out of your mind?!” a voice called out to make her conclude otherwise about the curb. She barely heard it within closed windows but she would recognize that voice anywhere.

With a deep breath she unbuckled herself and got out of her car to see Alex standing between her car and the one behind which she victimized with a supposed hit. “Sorry, hey, my bad” she apologized immediately. Contrary to new York set of driving skills, the city makes you master in road rage. But this was Alex and she was clearly not in his good graces to begin with.

“You park like a maniac that was diabolical-” he began with furrowed brows and a very intimidating agitation laced in his tone. He knew the context of her poor parking skills beforehand so he accusatory, precisely right.

“I wasn’t parking, I was getting out.” She replied, guilt in her tone even though she wanted to be stern.

“After hitting another car?” He asked with a scoff as he crossed his arm. The generally calm, the awfully chill Alex Turner was all of a sudden very concerned about a half empty parking lot.

“No-there was no alarm I thought it was a curb.” She said, pulling her arms closer to herself because it was too cold without her sweater she removed inside the car.

“Now you cant tell the difference between a curb and a car and you’re out there on the road?” he spoke bitterly, puprosley showing her down.

Y/n felt guilty as she rooted-ly did so around him ever since their breakup. She allotted this agency to let him be bitter to her because of that but as of now, he was being unreasonably petty “Hey I have a valid driving llicense, I don’t need you to police me on it.”

“Sure my lady, why don’t you go out on the road and grace us peasants-“

”Don’t be so melodramatic there’s barely a scratch on your car!” She exclaimed with a huff as she looked over at the front truck to cross check.

“A fender bender is a big deal and this is your fault, what if I was in it?” Alex inquired shaking her head as he leant back on the car, wanting to appear rather authoritative.

“Fine” she sighed realising this was going nowhere progressive “I’ll just pay for the damages. How does that sound?”

“Oh?” He snickered in a harsh way looking to the side and then back at him, “oh you’ll pay for the damages, will you?” The irony wasn’t lost on either of them but he was just overdoing it a bit. “That’s shocking, you generally prefer to run when you mess up.”

“Alex just because I tolerate you on set, my workspace, doesn’t mean you can constantly berate me.” She said, genuinely disheartened he would bring up everything to the same thing over and over again.

“Tolerate?” He gasped softly for dramatic effect “You tolerate me, y/n? After everything you’re seriously going to stand there tell me that?”

“Breaking up with you is not a crime Alex.” Y/n said as her face fell that they were here bickering again. There was a much more graceful way to go about this than constantly talk down to her on set, she let it be given she was here for work but he was going out of his way to be unpleasant. In the hotel lobby, by the vending machine, blocking her supposedly favourite drink and he knew it was her favourite: damn a two year blissful relationships. “Spilling coffee on my shoes, getting the intern to send me the wrong schedule and I know you added those coloured pods to my white shirt laundry.” She hasn’t even been here a week but Alex had created absolute havoc misusing their shared hotel space privileges.

“Whatever the fuck you’re on about” he said disregarding and denying what she was accusing him of, he had done it but it wasn’t anywhere major nor significantly hurtful how she hurt him and so far he had been the bigger person. “You think you’re so important in my life that I would do all that? You think I have all that time, y/n?” He quite literally did have all that time. He wasn’t even needed to make the music video he just came because he wished to do so and the studio could most definitely not refuse him if he wanted to be present for the shoot of a song he made.

“You’re a bully.” Y/n said after much thought to come up with a conventional yet witty

insult that was the best she could do.

“I’m a bully?” Alex repeated, just expectedly surprised how surface level childish that comment was. She was growing on his nerves throughout this interaction and he could tell she felt cold, his muscle memory being taking off his jacket for her, that thought brought a bittersweet nostalgia as much as irritation. He hated that he could just tell she was cold, he had grown to hate her even but not unlearn her, “you are so pointless…go on inside princess you’d probably freeze out here” he scoffed and turned around.

As did y/n thinking that leaving faster than him was some kind of a heavy blow because she couldn’t have the last word. The blow did hit her eventually as she was in the silence of her car again, he’d known her like the back of his hand and that’s all they’ll be now. To know somebody as truly as she let him know her, a big piece of him was out of herself as long as he knew her but that’s all they would ever be now. Just pointless details of being so close to someone once ages ago. Maybe that’s how he thought of her now and she didn’t blame him.

She ran, she blew it. But it did change the fact that it was difficult to stomach his harshness. Alex, whose gentle affections was all she knew. Her Alex who changed the door from its hinges to a new one till three in the morning because she mentioned it irked her how the door closed, that Alex was slamming the door of his life on her face. Having to get used to his indifference, it hurt more than leaving perhaps because leaving was always easier.

Let’s get some abandoned effortposts on disco Elysium in the list. Liked what analysis on it you had, would be great to see more, or fail to see as the case may be

Here’s one of the last insights on Disco Elysium I care to put to paper for a good long while; I really enjoy the nested futility and self-defeat of the central murder mystery, the way it structured to constantly raise the question of how anyone could possibly benefit from what you’re doing.

I mean off the bat the murder victim is a fascist stormtrooper, so there’s that. I personally maintain that it’s still good in a general sense to investigate murders regardless of the moral standing of the victim, but to get real, it’s a very convenient time for me to embrace universalist rhetoric given how little support the neighborhood receives with problems that don’t involve someone well connected. And then, over the course of the game, you can kill all four people left on the planet to whom the initial victim actually mattered on a personal level. Three in clear-cut self-defense, the fourth as an optional casualty to the same mindless, trusting proceduralism that’s admittedly and unfortunately intertwined with my “ no murder left unsolved” stance.

And then! You finally run down the murderer, and from a public safety perspective it turns out that if you’d just gone home after the mercenary tribunal, nothing would have changed; Dros is on his last legs, the odds he’s gonna kill anyone else are very very low.

The last redoubt is the ideological angle- there could be a narrative here about how you’re crushing the last vestige of the revolution, how the killing and the subsequent investigation was the last theatre of the old war- but I think the narrative resists even this attempt to read meaning into it. From an ideological perspective Dros committed the killing off the clock. It was spite, not praxis- informed in the moment by his misanthropy, his neuroses about women, and his obsession with Klaasje more than it was about striking a blow for communism. He killed Lely while Lely was doing probably the least objectionable thing he ever did. Obviously Dros’s neuroses and living situation were downstream of ideology, of material circumstances, in the way everything else is- but to try and elevate the killing by making it about that feels disingenuous.

And this is great, because Disco Elysium isn’t really about the murder mystery in the same way that Fallout: New Vegas isn’t really about finding the guy who shot you in the head-it’s an injection point, it’s a thread you pull for guidance, but the real meat is all the other stuff and people you encounter while poking around. The killing isn’t unimportant, per se, but the mystery surrounding it kinda is! Given the repeated anti-climax, it’s definitely *less* important than the harm you can cause to people in order to push the investigation forward, or the good you can do for the community by going off-script and helping people out with random bullshit. It’s neat!
