how do you usually come up with an oc? you have a lot, is there a technique you use? what's your routine? do you go on pinterest for outfit picking? how do you choose their name? tell me everything about how you create an oc! (anything you're willing to at least!)

Ooh, interesting ask. Sorry for the long answer/rant, but we all know I love talking about my kiddos.

Coming up with a new OC, I put a lot of work and research into them. Usually, I would first start to create their personality. Who are they? How do they fit in with Canon characters and the plot? Would readers view them the way I want them to view them? Then, because I love creating my own little ships, I pair them up with a character and I explore their relationship.

Let's take a look at Nancy Turner. With my love for history, I have made Nancy's stoic and intimidating personality a combination of personalities/attitudes from real life people, real World War Two soldiers/leaders because as a female lying her way into the Army and becoming one of the best leaders it needs in desperate times, she's a fucking legend that her team needed. She needed to be aggressive, mean, emotionless, dark, mysterious. She needed a facade, when deep down she's hurting for the men she can't save and protect.

Now we shift to her relationship with William Pierson. When they met, during the early stages of the war, they got along well. Perhaps too well. They were similar to one another, they always backed the other up whenever they got in trouble, and both made it their lifelong goal to protect the younger Turner sibling, Joseph. (Pierson actually had a identity crisis when he realized he actually liked liked Nancy, but that was before her identity was revealed. Some of the guys, already hardened by war and not caring about normality anymore always teased him about his crush on the scary little guy. When Nancy's gender is revealed, nothing changes. Just that some of the guys get either more scared of her or actually attempt to hit on her.)

But Kasserine happens, and ultimately (canonly) Nancy (and Joseph) blame Pierson for the deaths of their men. Nancy and Pierson get physically aggressive and their friendship, their fragile feelings to one another, breaks. But during the Campaign plot, they try to mend their relationship and it has its ups and downs, but they never stopped loving each other and caring for each other. They go on to start a Career in the Army, are sent to Korea, and retire happy and married.

With their personality and relationship made, I go on their name. Sometimes I would already have thought of a name beforehand, but most of the times, I don't have a name until after those two steps. Coming up with their name also comes with a lot of research and thought. What would their nicknames be? What is the meaning of their first name? Their last name? How does it relate to them or reveal about them?

Let's dive into Lilja's name. Lilja comes from Scandinavian origin, and it usually has connection to the lily flower. It means, based on the flower, purity, beauty, and grace. Lilja is a beautiful, graceful woman. Her Primis self could be considered pure, still naive and hopeful for a better life and future, so trusting of Richtofen despite the ups and downs. The name Lilja is also derived from the name Elizabeth, which means "God is my oath." Lilja has made an oath to always protect her family no matter the costs, to liberate her country, and to always protect and defend her boys, no matter how wrong they may be. And we all know Lilja is Latvian and that's all I ever center her around, but her mother's side of the family comes from Scandinavian roots, so it's not completely an odd name for her.

Okay; Personality, Ships, and Names. Now, onto appearance!

I honestly don't know what I do here. I put in some research and thought, but honestly, however I envision my character, that's what I write down. Since I can't draw to save my life, I try using those character creator websites. And I try finding face claims for my OCs, so it gives y'all a better visual of what they look like. But I think I do pretty decent at giving a detailed description of what they look like, or least some of their features. I know I've written some small, quotes of canon characters describing my OCs eye colors.

But connecting personality to appearance, I do use music to help create and explore my characters. Let's look at one of my Bell's, the one I've been showering with attention lately: Evan Garin. When I made Evan (and Erika, another Bell), I just kinda put a story together with a personality that differed from Emilia's (OG Bell). But as I am now making plot twists because COD has fucked me up with theirs and I'm a very stubborn and competitive person, I put more backstory into Evan, and my love for the band Queen helped me explore this character more. Evan is flamboyant, a young man who's heart is set on continuing his father's work and doing what he thought was right. He isn't afraid to scream at the world that he's gay, that he's different, because he's fearless and a bit tired of how society is making such a big deal out of something that isn't their business. Is it a crime to love people of the same gender? Doesn't God encourage love? Obviously, in Evan's eyes, he doesn't and it only turns him towards the Perseus Collective more because they don't judge or care. They are tired of people hurting them, taking from them, using them. Just like how Adler thought he was doing what was right by brainwashing Bell, Evan thought he was doing right by working with Perseus to destroy the USSR and ultimately make a new empire. Evan is cunning and sly and a bit smug and mean, but to Perseus agents and his family, he's the sweetest and most selfless man you could ever meet. I think I got a bit sidetracked, sorry, but anyways, I played Bohemian Rhapsody on fucking repeat (totally not because I love hearing Freddie's voice) and that's how I wrote his story (Life Has Just Begun, posted it on AO3 and published the link here). So I connect some Queen songs with him, because I have a feeling that Evan always made it his mission to go to their shows, no matter how busy he was with being the most wanted agent in the world. (Man, do I love making characters from the 70s/80s. That's my Roman Empire.)

Again, sidetracked, but adding onto appearance by means of their sense of style...I don't know. Emilia rocks the vintage looks, Evan is all for tight clothes and leather jackets, Lilja prefers dark colored clothing to hide/blend in the shadows and trousers, as they are far more easier to run and evade in then skirts or dresses. I have always thought of looking more into styles for my OCs, but I get lazy on that part and since we are being honest here...

I have way too many fucking OCs. I had to create that damn list so I can keep track of all of them, and I figured it's easier to pin it at the top so if yall ever have questions about them, you can just pick one and ask. I can't reblog ask games and just list all 100 of them. (And yes, shoot me, I'm a bad parent for forgetting to give some love to a lot of them. I'm crazy to have thought having this many OCs would be a piece of cake.)

Okay, I think covered most of it. That's my way of creating an OC. And through the years I have been on here and all the asks and the lovely reblogs and comments I get whenever I shine the spotlight on one of my OCs, I have barely ran into any issues (such as negativity.) I appreciate you lovely readers and writers asking about my characters, showing them love, and just being awesome supporters. I have always had characters, many I have created in my younger days and have long since forgotten, but I have always been cautious posting about them anywhere. But now, especially as I work on Evan's story, I don't care anymore what people say or think. These are my proud creations, my endless lost hours of sleep, my tears and grins and my heart.

I know I don’t owe any of you anything but I still felt compelled to write about my long term absence. And I feel far enough away from the dangerous spot I was in to be able to make this comic. I have a therapist now, and she agreed that making this could be a very cathartic gesture, and the start of properly leaving these thoughts behind me. I am still, at seemingly random times, blindsided by fleeting desires to kill myself. They’re always passing urges, but it’s disarming, and uncomfortable. I worry sometimes that my brain’s spent so long thinking only about suicide that it’s forgotten how to think about anything else. Like, now that I've opened that door for myself, I'll never be able to fully shut it again. But I’m trying my best to encourage my mind in other directions. We'll see how that goes.

I am still donating all proceeds from my store to Palestinian causes. So far, I've donated over $15K, not including donations coming from my own pocket or the fundraising streams which jointly raised around $10K. In the time since I made my initial post about where this money would be going, the focus has shifted from aid organisations to directly donating to escape funds.
