for this blog to be taken seriously at all, i challenge you to define the difference between kinning and your definition of "gender"

a couple points on this before i elaborate, first of all, not every gender i coin is for me but i know it might be useful for someone else so i may not feel a connection to it in that specific way. second of all, by "kinning" im sure you mean heavily relating to or more fitting with synpath because if you directly mean 'kin' that's more akin to who you are and i'm sure who you are influences your gender in some way shape or form*.

third of all, the concept of non binary genders[specifically xenogenders] is inherently personal and in my own experience, the different between kinning/heavily relating to, and gender, is very stark. though they may influence each other.

my recent posts haven't been for me except the sweet dream in sea major musicagender [that one i really wanted to make and i ended up getting carried away and still have more flags and terms to post in my queue], but the way i describe an alfosic gender, is, well, what the definition says.

when you have such a strong attachment to a fictional character that it influences.. your gender. gender can be fluid for some people and if it isn't for others, maybe being attached to a certain character can make them REALIZE new things about their OWN gender or their gender can be so inherently tied to a character that it is INFLUENCED by said character, whether you kin this character or just really enjoy them. the concept of gender itself is very loose and self-defined in the xenic community from what i've seen and my experience being in it, my own gender is self defined and i honestly do not identify with the genders with the "-alfosic" suffix. i just chose characters i enjoy a lot to make the process of coining a term more fun for myself to make, and hoping that someone out there would actually identify with one of these genders and be excited about it the way i am with other people's new terms.

i may have been going on a bit of tangent there but, to answer your question. the difference between 'kinning' or being kin with a character and ones experience with GENDER, for me, is like what the difference is between you as a being and you as who you are, and WHAT you are. you as a person vs an aspect OF your person. example: "i am jane doe, this me and this is the general scope for who i am. apart from that, i am a woman and that is my gender."

" i am john doe, this is me and this is my general scope for who i am. apart from that, i am a great void the way one would say 'i am male'. this is the best way i can describe my gender to be somewhat palatable to other people, and also to myself. this makes me feel comfortable."

'kinning' may be tied to you yourself wholly, parts of your personality, etcetera. but your gender is separate from that while being a part of it. you wouldn't say "i am male" in place of "i am human"**. at least that's my personal definition of gender. thanks for letting me go on a rant about gender and 'kinning' those are my top 2 hyperfixations /hj /sar >>tldr; 'kinning' or being kin with a fictional character in this case can be you, your whole identity, who you are. your gender is more closely tied to WHAT you are apart from that, a PART of who you are [ex: my name is jane doe i am a person, apart from that i am female]<< *though language can change and if you use 'kin' to mean heavily relating to *insert thing/person* that's all fine and well i'm sure **i'm sure some people might though, i am speaking with the purpose of being understood more easily

anyways! high school! where all gifted kids literally come to die! due to her shit from elem & middle school, she was offered a full ride scholarship to some prestigious school and as asian parents, they were NOT going to reject that free ride to a school that would help ensure suzy’s success in the future. she went from being one of the smartest kids to being another burnt out gift child and high school was fucking ROUGH! 

bitch really had a fucking crisis and burned the fuck out. her not being the smartest bitch anymore literally killed everything in her and she just stopped being that. she met people and what do u know! got into the wrong crowd where drugs and alcohol was everyones bff!

- OK just to start it off, hes probably bisexual

- hear me out okay

- the dude has varied taste in women, obviously. the only distinct traits i could find between them all were short hair and formless figures. this doesn't necessarily mean that he's bisexual, but at the time there was a lot of social stigma around anything that wasn't heterosexual and so I'm fairly certain whatever attraction to men he has has been pushed down

- and pansexual is also very possible but i'd think that he'd get a little confused with gender fluidity or something like that and historically that sort of thing wasn't not all that prominent, especially in England in the 1930s where racism was still a normal thing

- what he probably does is that anytime he sees that a man is like relatively attractive his brain auto-corrects into harsh criticism and sudden scorn for the person for like no reason to cope with his gay feelings

- so you already know he's a stubborn baby man

- he doesn't admit a lot of things, like that he thinks you look nice or that he's happy to see you because his pride gets in the way a lot of the time

- the only time he really does admit anything outwardly is behind closed doors when you're both probably in bed and relaxed, not really thinking of anything. you'd probably hear him say something along the lines of “im a lucky man” or “dont leave me like the rest of them did”

- yeah, his self confidence is extremely low. of course he knows that he's a damn good businessman and a great leader, but he has doubts more often than not that cause him to loose sight of himself

- usually he drinks when this sort of thing happens because he can't help but feel ashamed to admit his feeling. it's a coping mechanism that he uses for pretty much everything, really

- he can't talk about himself very openly, so you'll either have to sit down and drink with him or urge him to speak about what's on his mind because that shit ain't healthy in more ways than one. (you personally can probably think of a million different solutions, those just seem like the most likely)

- speaking of which, he doesn't sleep much either. he can function on barely any sleep at all, but the issue is that before having to get into bed with someone he probably ends up falling asleep at his desk or on a couch or something. he's not sure how the blanket got there while he was sleeping, but he appreciates it regardless

- tommy probably enjoys someone who's confident in themselves or at least carries and air of being confident. people that he's pretty sure could stomp him into oblivion are hot, he can't help it. of course he also likes people who are the quiet type of scary as well. he can't ever figure out what's going on in their head, and it creates a sense of comfort in ignorance but unease in it as well

- i will elaborate on his secret masochism in my nsfw headcanons that i might make later (maybe idk yet)

- his favorite thing to do in his past time is read, honestly. it's a good way to detach from business and a good way to spend time with someone

- he probably likes historical fiction the most. maybe horror too, but he likes all things history. especially if they're about the Great War because honestly he wants to point out the flaws in some of the accounts he was part of

- if it's fine with you he'd rather just read and sleep all day or maybe bake something together if you've got enough time

- he gets frustrated with things that waste his time though so you'll have to probably do it on your own while he grumbles and watches

- if you were any sort of lgbtq+, he'd be that much more protective of you. same goes if you're a woman because in his mind woman=weaker. it's not necessarily true, but he feels an obligation to be protective of a woman. you're probably much stronger than him or at least seem like it, so not unless you tell him to stop treating you like a piece of glass he'll keep an arm around you at all times. a man he'd probably feel less protective of honestly just because he respects pride and dignity, but that doesn't mean he doesn't let up on the protection

- man or woman or anything like that, once you mean something to him you're going to have his boys’ eyes on you everywhere. it's a dangerous life he leads, and while he doesn't really want you to be involved in it to the point of keeping you in constant danger, it can't really be helped. expect to be kept under close inspection within his area and slightly closer inspection out of it

- is very hesitant to let you become a part of business affairs. even being at the meetings makes you a witness, therefore if one of the lower members snitches you might be in danger if your name is spilled. it's very unlikely he'll try to get you into business affairs unless you're trained and well-educated in that sort of thing

- this includes accounting, contract knowledge, and maybe even basic law knowledge amongst other things

- he may want you to come along for business events like parties or something, but if you're after grace there's close to no chance that he's introducing you as his significant other or bringing you at all. if you do come along though, he may introduce you as a whore. if you're a dude though you'll just be a friend coming along with him

- speaking of which, he has really bad PTSD. from the multiple things that's have happened to lead him to the present, it's not unlikely that he'll wake up with frequent nightmares and be triggered by things such as loud noises that are too sudden or someone screaming because they're in pain or something like that. and after the whole grace incident combined with john’s death he's probably even more of a mess

- this of course leads him to drinking quite often. it's no time unlikely for him to get intoxicated nearly every day of the week, and often times he doesn't say a word about it during and after. in fact, now that he has you around he's even more adamant to not talk about it. but he can't really help but talk once he feels safe doing so

- what if you leave him? would you have doubts because he's mentally damaged? what would happen if you did leave? these questions cause anxiety obviously

- but tommy has always paid attention to the little things. for instance, if you see him drunk and happen to sit next to him quietly while talking about something that has nothing to do with it, he'll definitely remember it the next day. the fact that it takes his mind off of whatever he's mourning about is something he really appreciates because he knows he wouldn't be able to do it himself

- he's never been one to have loose lips, but when he's intoxicated he may or may not just spill to you right there. you could be saying something like “- and then she knocked him the fuck out. It wasn't weird to watch cause she-” and he’ll just look you dead in the eye and say “I thought about France again today.”

- it's very likely you'll hear about his past lovers more than once and honestly Tommy is hesitant to talk about it. he may be insensitive sometimes but he's not an idiot, so he knows it may make you uncomfortable

- just listening to him makes all the difference to him. he hasn't felt like someone cared about what he's had to say without being a Shelby for a long time, and you just caring enough to sit and hear what he says means more than any big success in the business or good news from some merchant overseas

- he, in turn, is very good at listening. in fact, he's so good at it that all of that skill got drained from giving advice cause he's horrible at that. his way of handling things isn't great so when he tells you to shoot the guy at work who’s been bothering you in the hand as a “warning”  to the others, don't do it cause

- ok now for random headcanons that are not deep and depressing

- probably likes animals, but honestly if he had to keep one in the house he'd prefer a cat just because they're less strenuous and take less effort to handle. while he's not working he'd like one of them curled up in his lap and purring as he keep some one hand on the pen and the other on it’s head. he'd probably name the cat “Mitten” or “Button” ok let's all be honest with ourselves

- lowkey loves to wear your sweaters or something like that. he'll definitely deny any claims suggesting so, but you know damn we'll he still stealing your clothes whenever he can, feminine or masculine. honestly just having it feel like you're around him all the time by simply wearing your clothes makes him feel really comfortable, especially if you're bigger than him or wear clothes that are bigger than him. it makes him feel safe

- probably also likes it when you in turn wear his clothes. he won't say it out loud but he likes it when he notices that his shirt is missing only to see you groggily fixing yourself coffee/tee/literally anything else in it at like 8AM in the kitchen

- likes the color blue a lot, but red looks really nice on people in formal clothes. if you show up in a red dress or suit or whatever he's definitely going to be fucking you on the table later and that's just the facts

- he gets jealous very easily but never says anything about it. you can tell because he suddenly gets about 10x clingier and literally holds you close to him at all times to make a point. may also stare down anyone that looks in your general direction for good measure

- he gives his s/o flowers all the time, whether he's in person or not. he likes to pamper you to the point where you look like a monarch, but like alfie he fully understands if you're more simplistic and prefer to stay low-profile cause he does too

- physical appearance doesn't matter to him all that much, but his favorite part of the human body is probably the hands. he likes to see hands that have been through some shit, like scars on them and maybe a little dirt or something from work

- he's always been fascinated by writers and people who can create something from nothing. in fact that sortof imagination is always something's he’s envied and wanted for himself, but he's not hopeless at it. he's very good at making up stories and detecting flaws in plot or logic in the storyline. so if you ever need someone to proof-read for something you missed he's the guy to go to. also he knows publishers all over so if you're having trouble he can hook you up with someone to get your stuff known

- kindof emotionally closed off but he can't help but want to talk when you're around. you're inviting in more ways than one, so he eventually ends up spilling no matter what's wrong

- once it's been established that you're close, the whole family may or may not watch you closely for several weeks trying to figure out whether you're good enough or not. arthur will most likely watch you from afar and give you death glares as a warning and john will defenitely flirt with you to see if you're going to cheat on his brother. finn is probably going to try to make friends with you, but aunt polly will interrogate you because that's what she does. ada will try to get the most information on you from everywhere she can and so and so forth until they finally decide that if tommy picked you you can't be all that bad

- they warm up to you quickly, to put it simply, but tommy will most likely have to shoo them off

- in conclusion, tommy shelby isn't an easy lover, but it's worth the struggle at the end of the day. it's been a while since he's felt someone cared about him, and regardless of the circumstance you bet your ass that once he's grown fond of you there's little to no getting out of it by that point. you're his lifeline, his world, and he plans to grow old with you or at least keep you next to him until he withers away and dies

i dont really have an answer for this. i think i just automatically think about any song ive been listening to recently or any song that has been stuck in my head.

well i live in a two story house so the kitchen is downstairs and im usually lazy busy so since i have a mini fridge upstairs i just usually get water to drink while im writing. its kinda hard to eat and write cuz i loose focus really easily so when i am writing i am writing! i am in the zone! but if i am a little hungry ill usually snack on candy like chocolate kinder joys i love them but they r so expensive or snack on chips but i get like salt on my fingers or i like cheetos so cheetos dust and that just gets everywhere and later my hands and keyboard kinda smell like fart. 3. What do you do to combat creative burnout?

so burnout happens to me a lot so to get inspiration i either read other stories or fanfics which gets my head gears turning or i admire a piece of art or photography or a song. whats so unique and satisfying with writing you can explore and go anywhere with it, hehehe erotic if you know what i mean lol jk there are no barriers with writing just your imagination. there is inspiration any where you go and id advise to never stop writing. even if its a few short sentences or paragraphs about anything even bird poop its still progression and your mind is working and your searching for words like its all good for you bby.  4. lol boring, i know but my room. my room is really bright in the mornings and comfortable and chill and i have a candle of the pandora ride in disney that smells like the ride so its all good and relaxing and super peaceful plus i have a picture of myself the age of like 9 on my desk idk why but it encourages me and makes me focus to make sure i never get that cringy again.

so it was elementary school, i think 3rd grade and for my writing assignment we were given a prompt of idk what the heck tbh i think it was like be outside the box and im like ok imma nail this cuz im a weird child and yeah so i got my papers and pencil and i went TO TOWN on this paper. so i wrote two stories. one short story with a picture to go with it and one long story that yeah i buried years ago. so my first story was about a farmer was about that farming life. he had chickens and dairy. so i cant remember if the cheese was spoiled but doesnt matter. anywho these cheese and a chicken were alive like they could talk in the story and i gave them faces, yikes. but the whole story was the farmer was a b*tch and he was trying to eat the chicken and cheese so they hatched a plan to get away from the farmer. they did it successfully and they ran away. yay happy ending my teacher actually liked that one me too and my school mates were thinking what they heck is this girl on i made a story about how me and justin bieber made cookies for Christmas you know. so then my other story i was more proud of this one cuz it was a tone of paper, sorry trees, and this story was about how a female hippo (girl i was all about plus size and thicker girls and no body shaming) and an male ostrich were kidnapped from their own habitats and taken to become circus animals. failed version of Madagascar hey mine was before the circus movie OK THEY STOLE IT FROM MEEEEE. so they get taken and are treated to harsh punishment and the animals can talk and i think its in the point of view of the male ostrich guy thing. they are in the circus and they start to have this relationship happening. love starts blossoming its all good. im happy with this cuz i believed in love at age of 8. they find a way thru a kick butt scene of the animals escaping and the hippo and ostrich are so in love that they run away together and they have half hippo half ostrich babies and i think i named the species  hipstrich or like ostppo idk but i was so proud of this story and when my teacher read it she was worried about me lol i think she thought i might like mate these two animals like secretly idk but she was like it was ok and i was like what this is frickin William Shakespeare writing or like F. Scott Fitzgerald writing. nevertheless it taught me a lesson that nobody else needs to like what im writing the main point and only thing that matters is if your proud of it and you like it and i really did. i will remember that story forever and thats what made me want to be a writer. lol sorry that was a lot.

1. What is your favorite book?

fifty shades of grey hahaha naw my favorite book is obv you all know this is series of unfortunate events but i never usually cry period and i never cry for books ever so when i read mrs. tom thumb by melanie benjamin, its the part when her sister minnie dies i cried so hard idk it was just emotional the wording the way she described her pain it was so beautiful written yet so sad and that was just amazing to me cuz im like this book made me feel things and im like wow i would love to write a book one day and make someone feel something whether it be sadness anger happiness annoyance anything they are having an emotion and that is super powerful to do that with just words. pls go check out that book its a good read. also im a fan of the greatest showman so i really enjoyed it. there are many other books tho that i thoroughly enjoy so much. 

2. What piece that you’ve written are you most proud of?

oh my god ive always wanted to be asked this question hands down i am always proud of my platonic gender neutral tony stark fic called in·con·sol·a·ble window to me i wrote it so sad and i was feeling like depressed lol when i saw peter die in infinity war like i didnt know what to do with my life tbh but im so glad that @impetrichorny requested it tysm i just like how its not based on romance or fluff or happiness it is based on when you lose someone the nightmares and sadness you go through and that there is nothing nobody can do about it except just be there for that person so i really like writing angst and something that was out of the box. ive been thinking tho of doing a part two since the fate of all the characters has changed after endgame. who knows tho. 

3. What is the last song that inspired you? 

well for art it would have to good news by mac miller when i did that kobe bryant memorial on my art page. i dont want to give it away though but ill just say some very powerful womens music inspired my oc writing and making. 

4. How do you feel about letting people read what you write?

at first i was scared cuz i thought i wrote like trash which that feeling kinda doesnt go away like some days i feel that way others i feel confident or it depends on the request it just depends but anyways i was always insecure about my writing so when i started writing it was more like lets see how this goes if not ill delete the whole page. im glad to say it went great but in the begging it was hard cuz i kept putting myself down but i learned to accept or just understand that you keep learning with writing you always learn knew things with writing how you can explain something better or you words get more intricate and people see the improvement and you do too thats why i applaud those who dont speak english that english isnt their first language. you are doing a tremendous job and keep practicing cuz you’re gonna make it to the top. ive also learned that some days are not my days and you can take time off when youre not feeling it when you have writers block. just recollect your juices sip some tea go to the beach relax your mind a little and take as long as you need to come back and give it your all. also comments and reblogs and likes a follows those meant so much to me and encouraged me. thats why i cant express it enough how much all those mean to writers, artist, photographers, anybody who is truly trying their hard in this area of social media. its makes a person happy smile and confident in their writing but first train your mind into loving what you make not what others thing. you have to be happy with the outcome that is what truly matters and what makes your writing the best. look at me getting philosophical.

Hello ❤ Yes I definitly can, first thing Id like to say is theyre completly free to pm me about it as sometimes situations can differ on personal experiences and relationships with family 😁

Some tips on being Non-Binary that I can think about are as follows:

🌹 Every Non-Binary person is differnt, so all present differntly. You dont need to be androgynous to be Non-Binary, you dont need to wear differnt clothes, or have a differnt hair style, realising youre Non-Binary is an amazing realisation, it means you've finally realised who you are and that you dont need to be stuck in a just male or just female box! Feel free to take this time to learn what makes you comfortable, maybe its wearing prosthetics to relieve dysphoria if you have any, maybe its being able to express yourself in ways that were often seen as the opposite sex, feel free to present however you like, it doesnt invaliate your Non-Binary gender 😁

🌹 Express what changes youd like your friends and family to make to help make things easier and less uncomfortable for you if there are any, maybe youd prefer to use differnt pronouns from your given ones? Maybe youd prefer they refer to you as their child instead of daughter/son? Maybe youd like to be refered to as a differnt/new name? Telling people what would make you more comfortable allows them to begin doing so, as im sure they will want to support you and help - those who dont ill talk about below.

🌹 Understand not everyone will agree with the Non-Binary gender. Its obviously really intolerant and ignorant of those that dont, but being Non-Binary is still a very new concept to many people. The best thing to do for those who dont agree, or simply dont know anything about it, is educate them. Explain what being Non-Binary means to you and others, express how you feel about your realisation. If they try to listen and learn, great! Keep it up :D If they dont even try and continue to be dismissive, you may need to try again at a later date, or even cut them off if theyre being disrespective - some people, especially the older generation, wont listen or even try to understand. Its your choice how youd like to go about these situations, but iv personally cut off those people if they dont even try to understand and are just being transphobic. Just remember, just because theyre family, if they dont respect you and how youre feeling, you dont HAVE to interact with them or like them (this can be difficult if you're younger and still living at home - for now id say try and be neutral with them, even if its hard - things will get better, I promise)

🌹 IF you have dyshoria, feel free to explore certain things to relieve it, like binding (afab) or padding (amab), prosthetics, name and pronound changes

🌹 If youre UK based, book into the gender identity clinic immediately. Theres currently a 2 1/2 + year wait, so even if youre not considering things like hormones and surgeries, its best to get on now as they also provide things like gender therapy, and you may decide later on that youd consider it, so its best to be on it just in case

When it comes to coming out to your parents, see how they feel about the lgbt community first. Normally people will express how they feel about it in daily conversation, so you should get a feeling for it from this. Hopefully theyve discussed it, if not, bring up conversations about it, such as trans and other lgbtq celebrities, even non-binary celebrities. Slowly intigrate it, show that you have an interest and get them thinking about it. Show you have a knowledge about it, share this knowledge with them. If you're going to change anything aesthetically about yourself, do so slowly, let them see these changes. They should start to get the idea that something is going on, they may even ask you themselves - if they dont, id recommend sitting them down after doing this for a while. Be blunt at first about who youve realised you are, give a short explanation about what this means to you personally and even how youve come to realise this. If all goes well, youre good! Just inform them of things youd like them to do BUT, understand it may take time for them to get things like pronouns and names right at first, remember, theyve known you as X for a very long time - for me, as long as I can see theyre trying, thats all that matters :) But IF they dont have a very good reaction, take a step back and think about what you could of said differntly, dont think its over, they dont accept you - theres still hope, maybe they just didnt understand, maybe they thought they were loosing you or youre changing and they dont like it - remind them youre still you, but you've found out that youre Non-Binary, and that this is really good because you can now begin your journey to being much happier in your own body, they should want you to be happy :) So take the time over the next year or so to talk about it with them, let them know they can talk to you and ask questions ❤

Childhood

Sunwoo was born two years after his older brother, Shinwoo. His parents both worked at well known companies and earned good money, affording them an upper middle class lifestyle, but as a result were rarely ever home. Sunwoo did his best not to take their money for granted, understanding even at a young age just how much they had to break their backs to earn it.

Adolescence

His older brother excelled in school, earning straight A’s and getting into the first college of his choice. Sunwoo, on the other hand, was just a little above average and often felt overshadowed by his brother’s performance. This subsconsciously affected his work ethic. There would be times, for example, when he would just give up studying for an exam because he knew he wouldn’t be able to achieve the grade he wanted—that is, one that was comparable to his brother’s. Once he was old enough, Sunwoo got a job at local convenience store so he could earn his own spending money without bothering his parents. There, he regained some of his confidence and came to realize that his strengths lay outside of a rigorous school system. Still, he completed high school and decided to go to college, majoring in Business.

Tokkitchen

Sick of eating instant ramyeon for the fifth time that week, Sunwoo put aside his textbook and decided to look up simple dishes to cook. He fell into the metaphorical rabbit hole and found himself watching cooking videos for a few hours, landing on a few recipes that seemed simple enough to try. The next day, he went out to buy the necessary groceries and began cooking. His dish was… okay. It wasn’t completely awful, but it wasn’t spectacular either. Strangely enough, he wasn’t discouraged and vowed to try again the next day since he had leftover ingredients. The next day came, and this time the dish was light years better than before. Pleased with the results, Sunwoo continued to watch cooking videos online and improved his skills little by little. When he was able to perfect a pasta recipe, he invited his friends over to his apartment so that he could cook dinner for them—they would be his “first set of guinea pigs” as he put it. They were goofing around, and one of his friends took out their phone to record Sunwoo cooking. He began mimicking the narrative style of the numerous videos he watched, explaining what he was doing in an exaggerated soothing tone. It was one of the most fun nights he’s ever had. His friend sent him the video a few days later. Sunwoo watched it, cringing at the sound of his voice, but recalled how much fun he had filming it. He immediately began searching his college’s website for rentable video equipment, determined to make a cooking video, but for real this time.  After transferring and editing his very first video—"gourmet" meals using convenience store ingredients—onto his bulky, old laptop, he uploaded it to the internet under the username Tokkitchen, a reference to his apparently notorious resemblance to a rabbit. This was mostly for safekeeping—he knew his laptop was on its last legs and he only had so much hard drive space after all—but he also secretly hoped that maybe he would be able to capture a small audience. Sunwoo enjoyed making these videos so much that he went as far as changing his major to Film (his college did not offer a Culinary Arts major.) His technique and style improved significantly, and his viewer count steadily grew. It wasn’t nearly enough to justify doing it full time though, so after he graduated, he began the dreaded job search.

Present

After a year and a half of uploading videos, and just a month into the job search, Tokkitchen was suddenly an overnight success thanks to a video he had certainly not expected to be his claim to fame. It was one of his more casual videos: a half vlog, half cooking tutorial of caramel flan. Commenters seemed particularly delighted by his inclusion of footage of his three failed attempts at not burning the caramel and the resulting existential breakdown he had following them. He continued this model for his next video, and the next video, and the next video, and his channel views continued to grow exponentially. He has been praised by viewers for his down to earth personality and warm, atmospheric style.

If a company wanted to publish your comic or adapt it for animation or games, how willing would you be to change the story if requested to do so?

That's such a tough question just because it's such a goal for so many creators, and yet a potential threat to their creativity in a sense. As always, it will depend on what exactly would be changed in order for such a project to be given approval. If it has to do with censoring LGBTQ+ content, changing race for 'marketability' purposes and the like, or erasing a specific topic integral to the plot with relation to politics- then it's a no go. There are plenty enough watered down media that doesn't stretch itself with diversity those companies can have and the subtext they pepper in to stay relevant, def something i find irksome with todays media (its 2020 guys !!) But if it's maybe cutting a chapter that acts like filler, or adding a character ( so long as it is plot relevant) i could take that into consideration! I actually take some time to imagine what Ghost Junk would be in a diff form of media and usually in those scenarios, things change to fit the way its being presented! A video game will differ more than an anime adaptation for sure, so long as the original intent and impact is kept, i would definitely consider some change!

If I ever had the opportunity to pass my work off to a whole other team for an adaptation, I think I would take great joy in leaving them completely to it - barring a few obvious issues like race changes, gender/sexuality changes, and... changing the entire story to the point where it's unrecognizable. I love seeing reinterpretations of my work, and I understand that every adaptation would need changes of some form. My words and art aren't gospel - I'm open to any change if it improves the whole product. Whatever it takes to translate the material in the best way, which keeps the original message intact, is all good by me.

Changes in the actual comic would be harder to make - and I'd be far less comfortable with them, to be honest - but I wouldn't fight them if they obviously made the story/characters stronger. I've already added in ideas and reorganized plot threads based on reader feedback - luckily the story still has some places where it can bend. So long as a publisher took my basic story seriously, and aimed to remold it rather than remake it - I'd be down for a discussion. Hopefully a reputable publisher would know how best to sell my work, and would aim to make it as good as possible while maintaining integrity - I would try to trust them

Comic stays mine, won‘t be changed beyound perhaps some professional line edits and polish. There’s a reason I didn’t shop it around as a graphic novel. I’d actually like that eitherway, would love to get myself a professional editor when I have the money. Adaptions can go nuts, provided the main characters stay true to their comic versions and the woman-loves-woman storyline stays in.

Holmeaa - working on WAYFINDERS

For the story to be told in another medium I would be pretty game for it to change the story a bit. Already now we are changing the story from how we made as a campaign. Makeing it more streamlined and more precise. I wanted originally that our comic could be a TV show. I come from a background of a character animator so that would make sense for me. So seeing it animated would be awesome! There would be some designs that needed to change to fit animation better.

I think if my Characters stay in Character, then I'm fine with changing pretty much any of the plot or world things. But the Character dynamics and who they are as people is what matters most to me, and I'm not sure I would be willing to sacrifice that. With some of my stories I'd be willing to completely let go of the reins, and with others I definitely want a tighter grip, too.

Agree with the thing about character dynamics. My stories always stem from the characters' relationships and how they evolve, so I'd like for the essence of that to stay. Otherwise I'm pretty loose about the plot itself. Because I have an education in game development, I would totally be down for my comic being adapted into a story driven game of some sort. I'd be okay with changing the story to favor the game mechanics, like putting certain magic abilities in the focus and turning certain scenes into gameplay (like when they're sneaking around or fighting). As long as my handful of core emotional moments come across, I'm pretty happy to change things.

I agree with the character dynamics too. I don't feel comfortable if they change the character backgrounds along with it as well for er what Krispy said for "Markability". That stuff won't fly with me. Comic stuff stay the same but for adaptations, I want to make sure it has similar story beats even if there's a change on few details. Tbh I could totally see er....a visual novel game happening in my comic since that's what my original intention was going for. still at the end I really don't intend my comic to transend other mediums since i'm planning to self publish the story someday lol.

I’d be pretty willing to change stuff, actually. I’d want to be pretty involved in whatever adaptation was being made in this hypothetical, but I know that more people can make for stronger work. On the other hand, too many cooks can make for some pretty watered down soup, which is why I’d want to have a large role in things so some of the core stuff doesn’t get changed. But as it is, I’m not married to any ideas that exist in my comic, and am pretty welcome to changes.

If the changes were to benefit the story than I wouldn't mind, if they were going to change everything to make it appealing to the masses than no. Definitely not if they want to mess with the characters since how they are play a major role in the comic. I've got a really specific story I'm trying to tell, so I'm very stingy on changes. If anything I'd be more open to a company making a spin-off or something not totally related to the main story, as long as it's not a complete bastardization. Other than free advertising and the brand name, I don't really see how getting published would benefit me anyway? I'm already in the process of rescanning and re-editing the first four chapters of my comic for self-publishing, if I really wanted to adapt it into an animation I would just do it myself. Along with teaching myself whatever else I needed to get as little help as possible. Sure, I have no experience but it's not like I can't learn, there are classes and free tutorials all over the internet. I've always wanted to get into animating. I can't imagine my comic being adapted into game, what would it even be? An anti-dating sim? An interactive novel? An Apollo drinking simulator?

The dream is a studio ghibli adaption but that won’t be happening I would want to vet the studio/company proposing the adaption and ensure that we are a good fit. I echo what many of you have said about the integrity of the characters and heart of the story. There are a lot of secrets that will come to unravel as the comic progresses and I hope the publisher will be accepting of them. I will be happy to have a conversation on why these structural changes are there and why I think it’s important to allow them to reach a wider audience. That said, I am also eager to see how they would themselves interpret the story and I will give creative freedom to that. Im pretty much in the same camp of make changes as it makes sense, but stay true to the core. In the case of a live action thing being made of my story, I would actually be super ok with a POC actor filling the role of any of the white presenting characters. Or actors with different body shapes that what I'd originally draw. More diversity in film is always good

outside of censorship, I would be fine with most story changes? with that said, good luck lol. there are very few scenes I think can be cut out of the story without supremely messing up later scenes. every magic ability on-screen is important in some way, a bunch of random background characters end up coming back & getting way more focus later on, etc. add filler, sure, but there's really not much you can cut out without messing up the entire story down the line.

I'm pretty open to the idea of changing some details to fit a different medium better. The big thing that I wouldn't want changed in Whispers of the Past (https://www.webtoons.com/en/challenge/whispers-of-the-past/list?title_no=191366) is the characters' races. Since the story explores the idea of culture-shock and cultural identity, and the races/cultures are integral to world-building, it would be stupid the change the characters' appearances/races willy nilly. And besides, we don't want what happened to Eragon or Percy Jackson when they became movies. Congratulations on completely killing a franchise But yeah, as long as races and major plot details aren't changed too much, I'm really open to adjusting things. As an example, cutting out smexy times or making the language a bit friendlier to a wide audience, fine by me. But changing Kelan to a blacksmith instead of a farmer... Why???? If it was being published as a comic, I don’t think I’d be willing to change too much- though that would depend a great deal in what kind of change. Cleaning up some wonky dialogue? That would probably be fine. Censorship? Absolutely not. Changing my LGBTQ+ characters’ gender / orientation to appeal to the mainstream? Really absolutely not. If being adapted to a different medium, I’d be much more willing to change things around, but would still insist my minority characters not change their identities. But I understand that as far as plot goes, different mediums call for different approaches. I’m planning on writing my comics as novels someday, and will be taking a much different approach to them. The plots will definitely be altered a great deal to better fit being written in prose.(edited)

It honestly depends on what the changes were. There's a fair amount I'd change myself. A few core things I'd certainly not change though.

In AntiBunny http://AntiBunny.net/ for instance I could see some people missing the point of Penelope's character being a pacifist and wanting to make her some kind of badass, as if the only kind of strength there is comes from violence. I wouldn't remove the question of Pooky's gender, as in order to ask the question of "what is identity" I stripped Pooky of everything including even a mental construct of gender.

Some things I would change though. Likely I would cut the first two chapters and start at the 3rd when the plot actually gets moving. So demands for a faster flowing plot I could certainly meet. I'd probably cut few extra characters from the cast to streamline things a bit.

So yes for the purposes of streamlining things I'd make changes. I wouldn't make changes that would go against the entire point of the cahracters though.

Oh, a conversation in #general reminded me of something else regarding adapting Super Galaxy Knights Deluxe R - If the comic is to be adapted with no changes at all, it'd be a legal nightmare. Off the top of my head, these are properties that have been directly stated in dialogue - - Yahtzee - Risk - Mario Kart - Settlers of Catan - Pokemon - Disney's Frozen I don't think you could technically get in trouble for any of those? It's not like anything copyrighted was shown on screen, it's just characters talking about things they've seen before. But a publisher would probably want to play it safe and avoid that. Also... the NFL might get mad at the publisher if the gang names in Cunoze City aren't changed? Like I don't ever say the team location, so technically full team names are never used... but again, it's probably best to play it safe.

Some changes I'd be okay with: Adjusting ages of characters to appeal to target demographics, removing scenes that are difficult to draw, tweaking characters to be either more or less horrible depending on their role in the story

The more I think of it, the more I realize that the most likely thing I'd be asked to change in AntiBunny is to either tone down the violence and grimdark for kids, or make it even raunchier to appeal to the "mature" (not mature at all) animation market (Seth McFarlane's audience).

My own comic keeps it rather PG-13, but there's not much market for animation in that field, at least in America. Seems like it's all either kid friendly stories where no one dies or if they do it's off screen (people get shot and stabbed in my comic) or there's the opposite with dropping F bombs every other line and filling it with sex jokes.

Hey, I mean, never say never. Off the top of my head, Futurama and the Samurai Jack revival were both western cartoons that I'd put solidly in PG-13 territory. I have a tendency to be very hesitant about acknowledging or trying to solve any issues I may have.

Part of that is due to OTHER issues I have

But at least one part of it is this: I know that the issue I want to fix is usually only a small part of a bigger issue, and sometimes I’m not aware of the bigger issue, sometimes I am aware of it but it’s only that one small part that’s bugging me at the time, or that small part is all I’m capable of trying to resolve at the time....But I hesitate because I KNOW that as soon as I acknowledge and fix or start trying to fix that small part, the whole bigger issue is suddenly gonna become a bigger issue - I will be so much more aware of it, it will bug/upset/hinder me so much more, I will be hassled by issues I hadn’t even realised were part of that same big issue!

For this reason, I tend to try to, or at least want to, put off dealing with my problems. Not forever, but put it off long enough that I will theoretically be able to deal with all the small issues and the larger issue itself, all at once, without giving it a chance to pull the whole worsening and multiplying bullshit.

......I think this is now happening with the, well, sideaffects (???? wtf do I refer to this as-) of my being a trans enbie. like. names, behaviour, gender dysphoria with my body, clothes- you name it, its an issue

Because previously, here are the things I was struggling with: I knew I wasn’t a boy or girl, I didn’t like seeing my birthname written down and especially didn’t like writing it down myself, and I didn’t like people making a point of referring to me as a girl. I very very rarely got gender dysphoria about my chest but then I normally just layered up (got into some arguments due to this in summer because I couldn’t explain why I was choosing to overheat instead of taking  a layer off without outing myself...) and it was. well. not fine but bearable

So. I acknowledged that I’m nonbinary, and I think closest to agender. I’d prefer xe/xem pronouns or they/them as a second place option, I asked my friends to refer to me as Ash when safe to do so, and, well. That was about it? It’s not like people normally make a point of talking to other people like “hey, WOMAN! yea, Im talking to you LADY!!! be a decent GIRL and get over here rn, FEMALE!!” so that was...never AS MUCH of a problem

thing is. now that I’ve acknowledged that those things upset me and tried to resolve them, more things that were before minor annoyances at worst are now quite upsetting?

It feels kind of like when you’re incredibly hungry, so you eat, and it’s only then that you realise you’re thirsty too, so you drink, and after you’ve drunk your fill you just about collapse of exhaustion - I was never aware of those problems before, but now that I’ve done my best to deal with the worst/easiest to resolve problems, all possible other problems are trying to snatch my attention all at once and it sucks.

I’ve been daydreaming....much, much more about when I’ll be able to be safely out, present myself how I want, etc, and wondering how much of that I could get away with now. I’ve been dancing around the idea of somehow getting a binder or coming out to some of my teachers or my mentor at school for....a while, now. I’m getting upset much more often about casual, unintentional exclusion, my dysphoria’s worse and more frequently, I’m questioning things about my behaviour or looks I never even thought about before (I’m not sure what to do with the information that if I tuck my hair behind my ears, I look more female, if I leave it completely loose so it’s an inconvenience, I look much more of somewhere between androgynous and male? nor what to do with the sudden fretting about how I sit or walk). Part of the reason I’m considering coming out to a teacher - and it’s a minor one, which is good because it’s kind of a stupid one - is that I hate them using my birthname in class. It’s even worse when they use the abbreviated version of my birthname: most people in my year want their name abbreviated if it’s possible for their name to be shortened, but I don’t because my birthname is common and so there’s almost always been someone else with the same name, and THEY always chose to go with the shortened version. As much as abigail makes me twitch, Abi is so much worse because whilst abigail isn’t my name, at least it isn’t someone else’s entirely - someone who is my friend and normally sat right beside me. 

I’m scared that if I told a teacher that they’d pass it on to other teachers, though. or worse, senior staff. Or even worse than that - my family. 

It’s also just....really weird. Before I got used to my friends calling me by name, I wouldn’t look up when they called for Ash, I’d recognise it consciously sure, but I didn’t have the kind of subconscious, ears metaphorically prick at hearing your name even if you weren’t paying any attention at all, kind of response. 

But now? Now it’s even weirder! because sometimes I’ll look up when they call my name, and won’t really recognise that the word abigail refers to me at all. Other times, I’ll notice that word but my friends will call my name multiple times “ash, guess what - ash? ash! ash are you even listening?-” and I won’t notice or recognise it at all. And that’s....weird and makes me very uncomfortable because a small pessimistic part of me feels like that means maybe I don’t have any name or identity of my own at all anymore. And I know that’s dumb. It doesn’t even make sense and is miserable besides but...It makes me feel uncertain, kind of scared and upset

I just wrote the initial (A.) on all my schoolwork I could get away with so far, but...I’ve gotten called out on needing to put my first name down once already and it’s only been, what? A week? Two? I don’t know

I know of several people who are also trans who I guess I could potentially talk about it with - but at least one out of those three has made it clear, rather hurtfully, that they (?) don’t wanna talk about it, at all, about me or them(?). Well. Really hurtfully if I’m being honest with myself but...it’s whatever, I guess...And well, I’m scared to bring it up with the other two? Of Benders and Bonding Chapter 1

Roman didn't know how Patton convinced Logan to check out the circus with them. Okay that was kind of a lie. Patton probably used his puppy eyes, blinked a few times and said “please” in a childish manor. It seemed Logan could not resist the puppy eyes. Of course Roman couldn't either. It would be like kicking a puppy and Roman liked puppies. But yeah, the three of them were sitting in the stands of a circus. Patton was going on and on about buying candy and a few other things for the kids he looked after at home. “Im sure they would like some candy. Of course I would like candy too. Can we buy a lot of candy so everyone can have some?”

“Patton we're too far away from home. By the time we got home the candy would be expired. Plus you and the children don't need as much as you're saying.” Logan said while pinching the bridge of his nose.

“Well there's a post office in town! We can box it up and have it send through express mail!” Patton said.

“Patton, as much as a fantastic idea that is, I doubt we can pay for express mail. Perhaps when we do some work and collect some bounties we can send the children candy from one of the shops?” Roman said. He didn't like having limits but sadly money was one of them.

“But Roman it's circus candy! Circus candy is different than regular candy! Its more fun!” Patton said.

“I don't think there Is a difference.” Logan chimed in.

“Well candy from festivals and circuses do seem more special.” Roman thought.

“Exactly! And my- I mean the children definitely deserve some special candy. It may not erase whatever they've gone through but it might add some joy! Plus who doesn't like candy?” the air bender said.

The earth bender raised his hand.

“I thought we were friends Logan! Best friends!” Patton cried. He sounded like he was betrayed.

Just then someone dropped a small bag into Patton's lap. Roman looked up to see a person in a black hooded jacket start to walk away. “Sir you dropped this!” Patton called out.

“Keep it.” the stranger called back as he went through a small guarded door.

Roman turned to the other two and shrugged.

“Perhaps he heard us talking. Maybe next time we should be a bit quieter.” Logan said as he examined the bag's contents. From the clinking sound, the fire bender could guess it was coins.

“Oh what a nice guy! I hope we can find him and thank him!” Patton said.

Soon the lights dimmed and a spotlight shown on the ringmaster. The old man greeted everyone and told them the typical “you will be amazed” speech. Roman was honestly a bit excited to see what would be going on. Perhaps he could draw inspiration from it for his drawings and stories.

“Oh! Also I forgot to mention this. There's a villain who wants to take over this circus! If you spot him let us know. He wears all black and has a thundercloud on him!”

Roman rolled his eyes slightly. This man was a poor script writer and his acting wasn't all that good. However the crowd seemed invested. The first act was the “hero” of the circus and he was the strong man. Next was a man and woman who were animal tamers. Then a few acrobats of both genders did things such as tight rope walking and the trapezes. Roman found himself slightly interested in the other firebenders who juggled things like flaming batons and flaming swords. Seriously the blades were on fire. Patton was cheering when one of them spat out fire near the crowd. Roman glanced over at Logan, who was reading a book. The earth bender could care less. Finally after the last act the Ringmaster came into view again.

“That was our wonderful circus! I h-”

The lights dimmed. The Ringmaster acted confused as he looked around. Roman internally cringed as the Ringmaster pretended to panic. However he was focused on silk lowering from the ceiling. Then a hooded figure was behind the ringmaster and there was smoke. When the smoke cleared the stranger from earlier was in center stage. The Ringmaster was “gagged” and in a cannon. How did Roman not notice the cannon?

“Roman! It's the guy from earlier!” Patton whisper yelled.

The unknown person pulled the jacket off of himself dramatically and crossed his arms. On his skin tight gymnastics leotard was a thundercloud.

“Fools. You thought Strongman could find me? Fat chance. This is my circus now!”

Roman had to admit, this guy's acting was better than everyone who had performed. Patton was very interested. He kept saying “oh my goodness, oh my goodness”.Logan lifted a brow and looked from his book.

“Now witness the last act you will ever take part in Ringmaster. Strongman can't save you now.”

The villain then snapped and music came on. It was obvious his act was aerial silks now. The man slipped off his shoes and began climbing the dark purple silk. He would wrap it around himself and fall, spin, do the splits in mid air and so many other things. And the whole time he was doing it in a slightly seductive or memorizing manor. It was almost like pole dancing, minus the pole. He was incredibly flexible and oddly attractive. Roman was sure under all that dark eye shadow and white foundation there was a nice guy underneath. However every hero story needed a villain.

“Oh wow! He's really good! I can't do the splits!” Patton said.

After one last spin and a drop the man got down from the silk ropes and the music stopped. The crowed cheered at the performance.

“See Ringmaster? They're cheering the loudest for me! My powers are working on them.”

The villain then walked over to the cannon and stood next to it. A smirk spread on his face.

“For my encore  I will send this man into the sky. He will be shot from this cannon and will never be seen again!”

As the villain laughed maniacally “Strongman” came.

“Not if I can help it Doctor Gloom! You may be flexible and smart, but there is one thing you do not have!” Strongman said.

“What is that you boar?”

“Super strength!”

With that Strongman picked Doctor Gloom up and carried him offstage. Everyone laughed and cheered as the villain kicked and pounded the man's back in an effort to free himself. After the two were gone the ringmaster got out of the cannon and took off his gag.

“Doctor Gloom may be scary but he isn't good at tying knots. Anyways thank you for visiting our circus! We hope to see you again soon!”

The crowd made their way out of the exits. However Patton didn't want to leave yet.

“We still have to thank Doctor Gloom! Plus he was cool and I want to ask how he could do the splits without it hurting.”

“Well he went backstage where patrons like us cannot go. Lets just go to the hotel room and end the day.” Logan said as he closed his book.

“Nonsense Logan! That man did a good deed and must be thanked! Plus his acting skills were better than everyone's! I must let him know he was a good villain.” Roman said, agreeing with Patton.

“The guards aren't there Logan? Pleeeaaase?”

Puppy eyes.

“Fine. No more than five minutes. Then we are out.”

Patton cheered and immediately ran towards the backstage curtain. Roman laughed and followed, leaving Logan protesting and having to follow. They carefully looked around to see if anyone saw them. Luckily they weren't noticed, so they entered. Patton let the way down the hall where a large amount of light was coming from a room. They peeked in and saw Strongman and Doctor Gloom talking.

“Virgil you needed that money! You needed it to get out of here! No person deserves to be owned!”

“Chill. Those people needed it more than I do. Besides I'll be fine.”

“But-”

Just then the Ringmaster entered through another entrance.

“Bai can you give Virgil and I a moment? Thank you.”

Strongman looked at Virgil (Doctor Gloom) for a moment and left. After he left, all hell broke loose.

“Boy I didn't buy you off of your father for lousy performances!” the Ringmaster said.

“Whatever. Slavery is against the law. All I have to do is tell someone and you'll be gone.” Virgil said, a frown on his face.

“You wouldn't dare. You have nowhere else to go. Besides what place would allow blood benders to work and live? You'll be alone until you die. Maybe if you were lucky you'd land a job as a prostitute. I own you Virgil. You cant do shit.”

“You dont own m-”

Virgil suddenly fell to the floor holding his cheek. The Ringmaster then kicked him hard. That was enough for Roman. He got up and rushed in. He stood protectively over Virgil and pointed his sword at the Ringmaster.

“You will not lay another hand on this man understood? You will let everyone you bought go and turn yourself in. If not I will have to harm you.” Roman said, his expression becoming more firm.

“Who the hell are you? What does that matter no one will believe you.”

Logan then stood up and walked in ever so calm and collected. However his face was stern, borderline intimidating.

“I would listen to him. He and the emperor of the Fire Nation are close. As many military and government authorities and I.” Logan said.

The Ringmaster was quiet now. Patton came in and helped Virgil up and held him protectively. Like a brother protecting his sibling from a bully. The only reason why the dark strange performer wasn't running away was because he was too stunned.

“I call bullshit.”

“Well then I assume you shall wait until authorities come and break up your circus? Have it your way.”

“We'll be taking Virgil somewhere better than this. Shame on you. I hope you never sleep well ever again.” Patton said. To be honest that was a pretty intense thing to come from the air bender.

The group made their way out the back, Roman keeping vigilant just in case the Ringmaster came after them. When they were out Virgil fell to his hands and knees. He was shaking and if one looked closely one might see tears.

“What do you guys want from me? I don't have anything else to give to you.” he said. “That's a rude thing to say to your heroes.” Roman said.

“You were having a serious problem so we fixed it. Easy as that.” Logan added while pushing his glasses up.

Then Patton spoke. “Virgil is it? Hi I'm Patton. The guy in green is Logan and the guy with the sword is Roman. We wanted to help you.”

“I could've helped myself.” Virgil grumbled. Tears were still falling.

“Well looks like you got out early. Here, we'll  follow you to get your things and take you to our hotel room. We'll let you eat, have a shower, rest  and then you can do what you want. You can leave and do your own thing if you want. Go back to your family if you have any, chase any dreams you have..”

Virgil seemed to tense at that. However Patton continued.

“If you don't know then maybe you can travel with us until you know! We'll visit other places so there might be somewhere you want to be. The world is big you know!”

Virgil looked up with Patton and blinked.

“That...sounds nice.”

Beautifully written. I felt similar things, though I saw myself in Elisa. It's incredible to see an older, unconventionally beautiful, disabled woman represented not only as a STRONG, whole, sexual person on her own but also as someone to be loved and desired by the beautiful amphibian man. I've always thought of monsters and robots to be just the same as humans if not better... there's a purity and innocence. I want to be loved by a creature who doesn't understand I'm incomplete.

Thank you! i wrote that post for a second time at 5am in a kinda loose mental state so i thought i had written about elisa and realize now upon waking that i didn’t. my only possible complaint about the film is that i wished we could have seen elisa and the fishman interact more. obviously i’m a sucker for that shit, but it also would have shown more of his communicative capabilities (though i guess they were implied well enough; anything else would have purely been for fluff. but that’s what i WANT)

elisa was fantastic. as someone who is reaching what would’ve been considered Old Maid status a generation ago, seeing an older woman was great. Not attempting to speak over anyone here, but I think most of us who identify with monsters or feel an attraction to them are often in the position that makes us an Other: her gay older roommate, her black friend/coworker, she herself as a mute woman. and that was all tacitly alluded to in the film as well: not only does fishman “not see what she lacks”, as elisa puts it, but he is an Other, and therefore, really, just one of us. “He’s not human!” “If we don’t save him, neither are we!” 

I guess I didn’t mention all this in my original post because to me it’s so implicit. I saw myself as elisa too. although i’m not “classically” disabled, i’m mentally ill and have a host of “unattractive” qualities: acne, bad eyes, bad teeth, bad blood which makes me physically weak, and i’m generally not conventionally attractive (as i have been dutifully informed throughout my life). where i differ from elisa is that i have sexual trauma and identify as [bi] asexual, so for me personally having a relationship with a “humanoid” creature would be a chance to exist as i am without having to adhere to human sexuality, or alternatively getting a chance to “try again”. but dont get me wrong i am EXTREMELY HAPPY she was shown as a sexual being; disabled people, especially older disabled people, are immediately written off and glossed over sexually. i feel like everything im saying is very obvious so it feels silly to say it “out loud” but it also feels good to talk about it. this was a really.... self-indulgent film for me hahahaahha

but i mean, why shouldn’t it be? nobody watches romance films so they can go home and think. i’ve just... never been able to have this experience before. i’ve never been able to indulge in this or have this idea entertained with such sophistication. beauty and the beast is as close as many of us got, but even then he becomes a human prince at the end.

the appeal of monsters is that they are not human. and those of us that have felt so excluded and different find a kinship in them because all of the humans we have ever known have simply dismissed us. while ideally we should find humans of our own ilk to bond with (and, ideally, we do) the monster also represents the escape from having to try. 

i wish i could remember where i found or read this, but i read statistics once that explained “gendered fantasy”: young boys surveyed overall maintained a superhero power fantasy, of being The One to save the world, to be a super-human. young girls had this fantasy too, somewhat, but it never took place here. they were a queen or a princess of a far-off enchanted kingdom, or they turned out to be The One in that they were a lost princess and had to return home. Women feel alien on their own planet, and we feel so shut out from attaining any sort of power that we, even as children, find it more pleasing—no, find it ideal—to be from another world rather than having to struggle in this one. and when i read that i felt like so many of my fantasies were validated: that, and the “disabled woman’s” fantasy of being rapunzel in the tower, not locked up of her own accord, but the validity in “wanting to be saved”, that it is not “unfeminist” not to expect disabled women to save themselves. 

so all of these aspects came together in the shape of water and a lot of this... is it even a genre? monster romance. though the true ending was that elisa dies, the ending we visually see is her wrapped in the arms of her love and her scars becoming gills, which is so many worlds of empowering and symbolic. what crippled her in this world becomes the thing that lets her breathe in the world she truly belongs to. she gets to escape this world with her love and be with him in the sea. she gets to renounce human society and be in the world she belongs in without leaving her identity behind; she will never be a fish-person, but she is “fish enough”, and that is leagues better than ever having to scrape by to be “human enough”. i would rather be the scrawny human outcast assimilated into a clan of orcs than have to be the scrawny human outcast among other humans the rest of my life, and that’s because i have felt disowned by humans. i have been shunned and rejected by them. so even if i am different among these non-humans, i am accepted. 

“He doesn’t know what I lack,” is how Elisa puts it. It’s not that he doesn’t know, in my opinion; it’s that it’s of no concern. an orc wouldn’t care if i have acne (well, maybe. they shunned those with the red pox but that was more about quarantining a contagion than looks); they would only care about their own values. although, with my weak body and brittle teeth i would probably be among their dregs too, hahaha. but then there’s also the fantasy of the healing taking place: the fishman could heal wounds and was a god; orcs in warcraft have healing magic and could probably regenerate my teeth (god aint that the fuckin DREAM) and train me enough to have some physical strength even if i have poor stamina. 

but even then, the ultimate fantasy is that i would overall be accepted as i am, and in being accepted, also protected. and THAT is essentially why i LOVE playing a forsaken and being part of the horde. I am this skinny, sickly, brittle thing that is protected and valued anyway, and i have left my human life behind and gained power in doing so. i am still physically weak but i have attained a strength of other means: camaraderie, healing magic, political asylum. I belong in their lands, with them, with their magic.

ahhaha you can see as i’ve started waking up that I’ve gotten a little more coherent. At least, I hope I have.

Peeves about fanfictions

If you don't like rants, ignore this post. And yes swear-words are included. I am focusing mostly on  Fairy tail FF, but any of this peeves applies to any other FF out there.

Also warning for spelling and grammar.

We all know fanfictions are more or less... “write it freely thing”,no rules or “you must do this and that”. I get it. But for fucks sake, it dosent mean you can blame everything on the write-as-you-want thing. Hell no. Professional or amateur writer docent matter, nobody will read your fanfiction or

Here are some of the biggest peeves about fanfictions:

1)  Despite this fanfic taking existing characters, the characters used could be someone else.

If you use an existing character, get their personality right. If the characters you use act different and talk different than the ones from the anime or movie you chosen to write your fanfiction about, you can as well change their names to something else. Even if we interpret things different,and why they act certain way does not mean a character can do a 180 degrees turn in their personality.

Sometimes the character from anime/movie acts as the real one would do, and then change into a...well.. a really bad OC.

2)   Author says the fanfiction is based in the already existing world of manga/movie, but none of the existing rules we already know exist in the story, the characters are way off (or only one or 2,while the others act as they normally would), the plot of their fanfictions is disconnected from the world and breaks most of that worlds rules.

No. The “Im just creative” - excuse does NOT excuse your ignorance to details,existing most important rules and simply not wanting to keep yourself within those said rules. If you want to bend rules, learn what they are first. When you know them, you will know:

* how to break them in right way

* what consequences and impact it will have on the story line and the characters

* what those consequences will lead to, and with options will be off-limits due to the rules being broken,and what new possible opportunities have opened up and why.

Remember. IF a rule that exists in the world your characters live in is broken, consequences is a MUST. If you re-invent a rule/rules in that world, you have re-made the world itself with is fine, but do NOT pretend that those characters are still in the same world they are in the anime. Be CLEAR about what is different and what isn't.

3) Pacing goes from 0 to 100 within one paragraph.

Chill.The hell. Out. there is so many details and information missing that NOTHING makes sense here. take time to explain how,when,why and where.

Take us slowly from beginning to the middle and to the end.

4) writers OC is the so called Mary Sue.

I don't believe in Mary Sues,only in bad writing.But holy shit, I know what people mean with Mary Sue. Fairy Tail fandom (and a lot of others too) are FULL of those. When your FT character can:

*open gate to Celestial world (or any other world) at any time without consequences, enter that said world without problem, and is a celestial dragon slayer,and then is an amaaaazing healer, and lets not forget that character sounds like a Lucy Heartfilia,Natsu Dragneel and Wendy mix, then you know you have created a character based on traits you admire in main characters, so you take those out,and put them into one character to show how a “good character looks like”. No offence,but if this character can do all this things, whats the point of having any other character in your fanfic? This one can already do everything, knows everything, uses magic left and right, have no issue travelling to other worlds and is well known powerhouse then sorry princess,your oc have serious issues.

*the OC is. EVERYWHERE. At all times. Sees every single crucial to plot thing, sees all problems that  arise, know why and how, and know automatically how to solve them.

*the OC knows other characters from the very beginning even if they haven't met them. If the other character is well -known (like Natsu aka salamander), then they can react surprised or shocked or happy or whatever you want when they hear his name as in “Oh so HE is from FT and he is the famous Salamander”. They should NOT know who is who after 5min with one of the other characters we already know.

The reader is probably a fan,so no need to go into super-deep detail about an existing character people have been followed in the series your ff is based on. the details about your own OC(s) you kick into their world is the interesting part. The new rules that you have added (maybe linked to previous events fans had seen? ) and why they exist is the interesting part, and how the characters deal with that. Does it affect them? Does it destroy their life? Does it interfere with their job or life, making it harder/easier?

New stuff need explanation, the stuff we seen can be named to and described to help us see what is happening where.

3) Flirty characters end up being written as stalkers, perverts, rapists, or someone who dosent respect the opposite genders “no”, intrudes into their personal space and is in  constant “I wanna do them”-mood.

Dude. I know. Interpretation thing again yea yea. There are still lines between “a little OOC” and “so OOC the character became someone else”. 

Yes I look at you who write about Loke damn it. Or Ezio. Or any other existing flirty character. Stop it. Take your time to get FAMILIAR with the character.

If you intend to overdo a character for comedy's sake,you will need to make everyone else behave off as well. If ALL other characters behave exactly as you would expect them to expect in anime/game/movie and only the character you make as the main one for your FF behaves WAY off, it makes your fanfic unbelievable not to mention a pain to read. And IF there is a reason why the flirty one acts off and not the rest of them, you need to have a reason for that.

4) writers dislike of certain character makes them change that character into a total dick who gains everything for free, and any relationship that hated character had is eliminated or changed so much it makes that character into someone else.

Poor Lisanna Strauss.

when she came back, people hated her. For no fucking reason. And most fanfics that involves her (In the Fairy Tail FF-world) go like this:

*Lisanna is a bitch

*Natsu-team is a bitch to Lucy

*Lucy cries and runs away, and either becomes evil, or ends up screwing around with someone 24/7 and now hates FT because Lisanna is back.

What.The actual FUCK.

Okay.If you want to write about Lisanna being mean, you need to start with an idea WHY. Basing it on “she was with Natsu first” does not hold for more than 1 second. They were not a pair when she poofed from FT. They were not MARRIED.

Biggest insult becomes the “Lucy you are weak go to hell”-attitude ENTIRE guild ends up having. You broke the biggest damn plot-related rule.

““NAKAMA SUPPORTS TOGETHER. NAKAMA IS FAMILY,AND NAKAMA HELP EACH OTHER OUT IN THE TIME OF NEED.“

Second thing you need is slower progression to WHY she is a dick. Why is she going against her nakama? Why are her old friends siding with her?

And no. No. Lucy being weak is your damn opinion. While you can write as if Lisanna thinks that, the OTHER characters change in one second flat. if they start thinking like Lisanna, you need. A freaking reason. WHY. And keep them in character as much as possible.

Can you really imagine Makarov say “yea they are right you suck” to one of FT members? If he decides to side with Lisanna, you need to keep his way of talking intact. Act as an actual old, wise and calm adult, not like some teenager who sides with his bully-buddys.

5) Characters that are not known for being power-houses in series become described as weak-ones. And everyone else thinks so too! No valid explanation, just pure hate from start to end.

Not being a official powerhouse in the movie/manga sucks. If they are not official they always end up being hated in FF. Once again, writers personal opinion takes over and creates this weird “let us kick down this character” instead of neutrally look at the weakness and strengths of that character.

6) “I found a girlfriend for The King so now I can live in human world forever and loose nothing” (Fairy Tail Fandom strikes again).

LucyxLoke shippers. Oh dear gosh,so many idiotic reasons they can find to make Loke stay in human world forever is... countless. few of those reasons are good.

yes Im sure he would abandon his comrades in Celestial World just because of that. Mhm. You are not convincing me with that. Or anyone else for that matter.

7) Blaming every plot hole, bad details, badly laid out information, bad character development, bad personalities mm on “I am amateur author”.

And this is why your writing never gets better.
