Note
The article regarding about annoying queer people sparked a by now long forgotten memory.
When I went to my first pride I snuck out secretly and thus was there after the parade. Most people were already some form of drunk or high(didn't know that at the time, I was 15 and naive beyond hope)
That was also the first time I saw puppies ever. In retrospect I must have stared and seemed like one of those annoying "no kink at pride" puriteens. They probably just wanted to allow themselves a small joke but what happened in praxis was, that a grown, white man in only puppy mask and boxers crawled up to me, stood up, started sniffing my breasts and when I started panicking and running away he run after me and everyone else watched and laughed. I think I screamed for help or cryed to please leave me be and was ignored but I can't remember much past the fear.
To them it was probably a small joke but to me it set me back for years. I didn't go to pride in that city ever again and took years to move past "no kink at pride" opinions, an opinion I didn't even have before that.
I felt incredibly isolated and wearing a small rainbow bracelet and cutting my hair took so much bravery. And it earned a lot of backlash too?
So often I see coloured hair and pins as this cutesy cringe thing of no consequence, but for me it resulted in hours upon of arguments and insults. It was worth it, because it helped me built my own identity apart from my families bigotry, but it sure wasn't fun or cutesy. Ultimately it led me to becoming brave enough to actually discover who I am and start making connections with the wider queer community.
Thankfully I had no social media accounts or I would have had some truly stupid arguments.
What I'm saying is, yes young queers can be annoying and it can be tiring to deal with them but being an asshole and vilifying them isn't the solution.
Making fun of teenagers doesn't make yourself more valid and doesn't give you the status of being an old experienced queer.
I'm saying teenagers here but the fun thing about queer people is that we can discover ourselves at any point in time. So it's less teenagers and more people newly discovering themselves as queer.
I get how annoying they can be very well now, doing voluntary work at pride does that.
Do many of those we consider annoying queers hold some harmful opinions? Yeah sure. (The amount of white queers, teens or adults, not dealing with systemic oppression beyond their own is staggering and they more than deserve to be called out. Just to be very clear, when I talk about annoying behaviour I do NOT mean microagressions or discrimination in any way)
But annoying behaviour is not synonymous to that and maybe we should all just start being less mean in public spaces? I get how satisfying it can be to get a hit tweet via a bitchy twitter reply now, but quite honestly I am more ashamed of that now than when I was running around in hoodies and short hair being painfully naive.
Because then I wasn't being mean to anyone. I had some stupid takes sure but no outlet. On twitter I was making fun of people to validate my own queer-ness. (Personally I think I was covering up for the fact that I was afraid the queer people I worked so hard to be part of wouldn't consider me one of their own. So I worked hard to show how I'm not one of "those queers".)
Either way, thanks for reading all this and thank you for sharing the article because it is something I strongly agree with. Just let people be annoying without making fun of them for it. It doesn't need to be a big deal.
Thank you for this wonderful, vulnerable, honest message about your slow path to self-acceptance in the face of a lot of barriers, anon. I'm glad that despite everything you've found your way.
Yeah, I think queer people have many reasons to feel terrified at the rising "no kink at pride" discourse, but sometimes when we lash out at puriteens we sound a bit like the childfree people who say that they hate kids?? Like, we're blaming literal children for an ideology of protecting "The Family" that has been foisted upon us.
I'm guilty of it. I was HAUNTED by the social pressure to get married and pregnant and raise a bunch of kids. It caused me massive dysphoria and didn't jibe with my queer identity. But I rebelled against it for far too long by saying that I hated kids.
It was not the kids' fault! It was the ideological specter of The Family as an institution that isolates and attacks all nonconformity and 'deviant' sexuality! Me being an asshole to children was not gonna set me free, kids were even more disinfranchised than I was!! I don't think I was ever overtly cruel to children, just kind of aloof and freaked out by them, but I definitely *did* say some numbskulled shit to my friends with kids a few times. Completely missing how disempowered mothers (and it was usually mothers) are in society BECAUSE of these same forces .
And I think something similar is going on here. Queer people are tired of having "Family Friendliness" shoved down our throats by corporations and conservatives, and so then we lash out... at young queer people. it's fine to have 18+ areas and events; It's very, very important to me that spaces like Furfest have them. But that's not the same thing as claiming young people have no space in our community as a whole. And I do think we need to erode the barriers between the adult and child worlds in a whole lot of ways, and reorient our attitudes toward nudity, sexuality, roleplaying, etc in public life. but that also doesn't mean a pup should run you out of a pride parade actually fucking sexually harassing you.
It feels great to be able to talk about this stuff! Thanks for your message.

GA: I Woke Up A Long Time Ago GA: I Had Trouble Sleeping When I Was Young [...] GA: And When I Was Supposed To Be In My Cocoon I Would Often Wander Out To The Desert GA: Where One Day I Was Visited By A Stranger Who Dressed And Spoke In White
Oh, for the love of peace. Is there anyone that this globe-headed chucklefuck doesn’t have in his pocket?
GA: He Put Me To Sleep And I Awoke On Prospit […] GA: He Said He Was My Guardian GA: And Though He Visited Rarely I Did Regard Him As That GA: Then Later He Stopped Coming
This one might not be so bad, actually. Scratch seems curiously uninterested in Kanaya, and she bears none of the telltale signs of his manipulation.
Maybe these visits were actually just part of his day job. As Alternia's First Guardian, Scratch might be obligated to protect the Frog Temple and its associated Player, just as Bec did on earth.
GA: In Time I Began To Believe He Was A Figment Of My Mind […] GA: But Then While Playing Our Game I Learned He Was Real […] GA: And Had Been Manipulating Us All To Advance His Schemes
Bad news like Scratch gets around - but not as much as I'd like it to. Kanaya views Scratch as a menace localized to Alternia, and seems unaware that he's involved in Rose's fall, too.
GA: It Was Saddening To Learn My Fortuitous Awakening Had Been The Product Of A Nefarious Ploy GA: Youre Lucky That Your Awakening Probably Had No Such Entanglements
No, Jade's awakening was part of Vriska’s nefarious ploy. She might be a bit of a loose cannon, but I'd take her over Scratch any day.

I think it’s a little unfair to tar Rose with the same brush as Vriska - or even Terezi, for that matter. It's not like Rose has actually killed anyone, and she's generally a lot more sensible than-

...alright, touché.
GA: And If Her Insane Plan Wasnt Alarming Enough GA: She Has Been Communicating With The Stranger I Mentioned GA: And Unsurprisingly She Has Not Been Forthright About The Nature Of Their Conversations
Wait, so she does know that Rose has been talking to Scratch?
That means that Rose is almost certainly aware of the mayhem Scratch caused on Alternia. It was probably the first thing Kanaya told her, when trying to warn her - and yet, Rose is completely unfazed. When questioned, Scratch undoubtedly provided the perfect excuse.
I’m coming to realize that we probably can’t outmaneuver Scratch -at least, not while we're playing by his rules. If we really want to pull ourselves out of the web he's woven, we should focus on exploiting his 'dark spots'. Both the Scourge Sisters are aware of them, but I don't know if they've told anyone else.

It's his side hustle you need to worry about.

you know what i think really gets me as a good omens fan who also grew up catholic? the very human approach it takes to morality.
i can’t speak for every denomination of christianity, but i can speak to catholicism. i grew up in the church, i went to catholic school, i was confirmed for fuck’s sake. i know the catholic church. the ways in which it eats away at your self esteem. the ways in which it makes you feel like you are a terrible person because you’ve sinned in one way or another. the way you’re taught the concept of original sin as though it isn’t deeply unsettling to believe that all humans are born corrupt. you’re taught that you were born tainted by satan, you as a baby you as a child you who doesn’t even know your place in this world yet. you are sinful because you are human.
there is no room for shades of grey in catholicism. you have either sinned or you haven’t. you are either good or you are bad. you are either going to heaven or you are cursed to damnation. (yeah yeah purgatory and all that but if i’m being honest the diocese i was a part of never really talked about it)
we all know the church is corrupt. every catholic knows that, but whether or not we ever admitted it to ourselves and accepted it as truth is another story. you cannot deny the staggering statistics regarding catholic priests assaulting and molesting children. you cannot deny the financial corruption that has been present in the institution for centuries. but you can ignore it. you can ignore it and pretend like the church is perfect and good because if you allow yourself to admit it’s issues, you admit that maybe your entire world view is flawed. that maybe the idea of morality as being black and white is wrong.
that's what i grew up with. with these contradictory beliefs. these adults in power telling me i was inherently sinful because i was human while also being told that God loves me. that God will save me from myself. so i grew up thinking someone else could fix me. because if i was inherently bad i couldn't fix myself.
but of course, the truth is, i don't need fixing. i'm not broken or bad. i'm human.
when aziraphale described adam as "human incarnate" i got EXTREMELY emotional. because to be human incarnate is to be not good or bad. it's to just be. be whoever it is you are. make the best choices you can. will they all be perfect? of course not. but will you be trying your damndest? yes.
good omens is a breath of fresh air for me and my religious trauma because the thesis of the story is that black and white thinking is unproductive at best and actively harmful at worst. you cannot live a fulfilling life while also believing there is only Bad and Good, and that Bad and Good are inherent.
good omens is a comfort because it reminds me in more ways than one that i'm worthy of love. i'm worthy of life. i don't have to be perfect, far from it. i'm allowed to be messy and make mistakes, but none of that means i don't deserve to be here. none of that means i'm a Bad Person. i'm just, A Person.
i'm trying. i've always tried. tried to love the best i can, tried to be the best person i can be, tried to live my life to the fullest, tried to cultivate joy for myself.
my brain is a mess. and 15 years, give or take, of being fully immersed in the catholic church (including 7 years of catholic school) definitely didn't help. i am still riddled with catholic guilt and toxic mental frameworks because of the time i spent in the church.
but good omens helps me work through it just that little bit more. it's there in its corner of my heart saying "hey. you're human. you're not Bad or Good, you're You. and you're trying."
it's... comforting. yeah, i think that's the right word.

Once again, you let a loud sigh escape between your lips, prompting Giyuu to look over at you.
"What is it?"
His sapphire blue eyes were like the ocean on a calm day as he gazed down at you.
The two of you were currently seated in some creaky, aluminum folding chairs while the mechanic tinkered underneath your family SUV.
"Giyuu, honey, we've been here for a while now. Are you sure that this guy knows what he's doing?"
At the mention, said man slid out from under your vehicle and swiped his forearm across his forehead, effectively smearing it with oil.
"So I think I've found the problem. You said you've had trouble with idling?"
The mechanic, whose nametag read "Hotaru" regarded both you and Giyuu with his eyebrows drawn together while crossing his veiny forearms across his chest.
You nodded,
"I was getting ready to go drop the kids off at school when I noticed that the engine would cut on, idle for a few moments, then shut off. I tried cleaning the valve, but the issue persisted."
Hotaru nodded, "I see. Well if that's the case, it could be a number of problems, then. I'm going to have to take another look."
Your eyes bulged,
"Huh?! Another look, but we've already been here for three hours?!"
Giyuu's eyes moved from you to the long-haired mechanic.
"Maybe we could come back tomorrow? It is getting a bit late." He reasoned, in a much calmer tone than yours.
"If you come back tomorrow, that'll put you at the end of the queue. I'm quite a busy man, you know."
"What!!? Why you-"
Before you could start going off on the man, Giyuu took hold of your hand into his and rubbed your knuckles gently to calm you down.
"It's fine, sweetheart. I texted Tsutako earlier to pick up the kids from school if we ended up running over time. It will be alright."
He moved his hand to your lower back and gently guided you back to the row of uncomfortable chairs.
----
"They could at least put a couch in here." You grouched. Giyuu chuckled softly.
"Needy thing, aren't you? We should be home soon; I doubt it'll take another three hours."
You whirled in your chair to face him, propping one leg up over the other.
"What if it does, though? I just might die."
He leaned forehead and brushed away a lock of your hair.
"Behave, yeah? We'll have the whole evening to ourselves since Tsutako has the kids."
The thought of a free night with your husband made something primal stir within your core. It also didn't help that he had on one of your favorite outfits right now.
Dark-washed jeans, simple black sneakers, a black t-shirt, and a blue and black plaid flannel shirt with the sleeves rolled up to the elbows revealing his tattooed forearms.
You wet your bottom lip with your tongue and settled your left hand onto his thigh. Your silver wedding band caught the pale-yellow overhead light, making it gleam.
"Something wrong, lily?" Giyuu asked, shifting his eyes to where your hand rested on his pants.
Your eyes moved from him to the mechanic, who was tinkering with something under the car and mumbling to himself.
"I don't know if I can wait until we get home..."
Seductively, you lowered your eyes before blinking at him long and slow. Your fingers began to rub circles into his thigh, making a soft sigh escape from his slightly parted lips.
"Right here? Right now?"
Giyuu questioned, immediately picking up your implication.
You nodded. "Please, Gi? I promise I'll be good."
He froze for a moment, his own eyes trailing over to the mechanic now.
The man was completely occupied by his task, him making little comments to himself about what he should try next; plus, his entire upper body was underneath the car.
Giyuu then looked past the waiting area and into a small hallway where he assumed there might be an office and a bathroom.
"Come on."
He grabbed your hand and you started cheering inside your head.
Just behind the wall leading into the hallway there was a little corner with a vending machine and water fountain.
Giyuu pushed you up against the wall next to the vending machine and started kissing your neck. You wrapped your arms around his upper back and tangled your fingers in the ends of his dark ponytail.
His own hands rested on your shoulders before moving down over your breasts, stomach, and into your pants.
Skillful, calculated fingers jerked them down your hips along with your panties. The knuckle of his left index finger slid up between your folds and collected a trail of your slick.
"Damn, you're this wet already? You really wanted this, huh..."
He pulled back to look at your widened, lust-blown eyes and pouty lips.
"Want you, Gi..."
Who was he to make you wait any longer?
He tugged your pants and panties the rest of the way off your legs and circled his arms around your lower back.
"Jump."
You did as he commanded and he held you against the wall with one arm circled around your back, his body pressing you into the cold, painted-bricks.
He used his other hand to pull his own pants and boxers down to rest underneath his balls, freeing his cock.
Lifting you higher up the wall, Giyuu angled his cock up so you could sink down on it. Immediately, a loud whine left your throat.
"Shh, you want him to hear you? Hmm, maybe you do..."
He then hooked his arms underneath your thighs, holding you with the crease of your knees in the crease of his elbows and spreading you open before beginning to bounce you along his thick, hard cock..
"Ahh, Gi!"
"Crying already? We just started, baby."
Your back pressed further against the bricks, running from his dick and nails digging into his shoulders.
Giyuu's thrusts had you sliding up and down the wall with nowhere to run.
He pressed his entire body weight on you and started fucking at a quicker pace, one knee slightly bent forward and almost touching the wall as he gave you swift, deep strokes.
At this point, you'd nearly forgotten that you were in a public place where anyone could walk in and see you, but you couldn't be arsed to really care with Giyuu filling you up so well.
You tried to hold onto him as best you could, hands moving from his shoulders and grabbing hold of his messy black hair in an attempt to ground yourself.
"Are you close? Talk." He stared at you with those deep blue eyes and hit you with another hard, deep thrust before pushing his face into your neck to lick and kiss it.
"Yes, Gi, I'm-!"
He felt your body shudder and decided to finish you off by pushing you up even higher against the wall and dropping you down on his cock, making you cum and squirt your release all over him.
----
Giyuu and you exited the bathroom and met the mechanic, Hotaru, in the hallway as you were heading back to the waiting area.
"I managed to fix the problem, so you should be all set to go."
He handed the bill to Giyuu, who took out his wallet to pay.
"Wait -wait a minute, let me see that?"
You gently took the piece of paper from your husband's fingers and scanned your e/c eyes over it.
"What is this: $300, for an inconvenience fee?!"
You crumpled the bill up in your hand and shook it at the mechanic's face.
"Yes, an inconvenience fee. For making me listen to the two of you fuck while I fixed your shitty car."

"We'll be Fine" is the new "Open Arms"
(but I don't think Telemachus will be a Polites-like character, though I do have suspicions that some of his songs/motifs/or at least one scene in the final saga all work as a call-back to Polites/Open Arms)
But anyways!
While I am not claiming a 1:1 comparison, "We'll be Fine" sees Telemachus in a Polites-like role with Athena, who has assumed a post-Troy!Odysseus like role in regards to her guilt over how she ended things with Odysseus in "My Goodbye"
We've got:
an ecstatic declaration of friendship (new vs established)
Tumblr media
We've got the positivity/look on the brighter side/things will work out
Tumblr media
AND most importantly (imo) we have the Call to Action! The "You have the power to change things/it doesn't have to be this way/life can be better if you work to make it so
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Tumblr media
Polites gets Odysseus to consider "Open Arms" at the end of his song (though, tragically, he dies before he can teach Odysseus how to effectively implement this belief system & Odysseus then fucks it up during the Ocean Saga)
Telemachus gets Athena to reach out to Odysseus. "Maybe, its time that you lend a hand/I don't think he'll mind"
Athena was not going to reach out on her own. (maybe it was pride, maybe shame, maybe she thought she'd thoroughly burned that bridge & there was no hope for reconciliation) but Telemachus helps her realize that is not true.
On a similar note:
The Wisdom Saga as a whole argues for "Open Arms" over "Ruthlessness is mercy upon ourselves"
(Especially in regards to the saga's main character: Athena)
So! I spoke a bit about how Ruthlessness was not mercy upon Odysseus (or Athena) here, BUT, now that I think about it, it's not so much that the Wisdom Saga isn't about "Ruthlessness is mercy upon ourselves" but rather, that it IS about the sentiments expressed by Polites in "Open Arms"
(I've currently got a breakdown of "Open Arms" half-finished in my drafts, I'll link it here once I finish & post it)
But also!
The Wisdom Saga is the first saga, without a single song promoting Ruthlessness.
The Troy Saga has them using a wooden horse to kill sleeping Trojans & the killing of the infant + Eurylochus suggesting they "Strike first/raid the place"
The Cyclops Saga has Polyphemus trying to lay waste to Odysseus's entire crew + Athena telling Odysseus to finish off the threat
Ocean Saga has Poseidon
Circe Saga has Circe's decision to treat all strangers as possible threats to her nymphs & turning them into pigs
Underworld has Odysseus' decision to become the monster
Thunder Saga is the first saga where every song (except Suffering) explicitly promotes Ruthlessness
The Wisdom Saga breaks this pattern
Legendary:
Even though Telemachus is singing about fighting monsters, it comes across as very idealist. This is not an aggressive song. Telemachus doesn't sound blood-thirsty or vicious. He wants to live up to his father. He wants to be able protect his mom
He dreams of fighting monsters (an intangible threat for a kid who's never left his island) but it's clear he's never so much as been in a fight before (Little Wolf is the first time he tried it)
"So I could bring the world some light" vs "We can light up the world"
Little Wolf:
Once again, this is not an aggressive song (not on Telemachus' part)
Telemachus is being egged on/taunted by Antinous + the suitors on one side & encouraged by Athena on the other (both of whom are more aggressive than Telemachus)
Telemachus is on the defense. He's unsure. He never expresses a desire to kill/destroy Antinous beyond his desire to want to keep his mom safe
Athena comes to help Telemachus without seeking anything in return! She's not seeking a new warrior of the mind/A new kid to mentor (Telemachus shows none of the promise of his father)
She's simply giving her help. ("Why should we take when we could give?")
"Have you forgotten to turn off your heart" vs "One young wolf has a larger heart than all these men combined" she saw Odysseus' heart as a weakness/distraction, while now she realizes it can be Telemachus' greatest strength
Even the suitors!! Antinous just wants to humiliate/agitate Telemachus. He's being cruel, but not ruthless. He lets up as soon as Telemachus is defeated/shown his place. He's a "bully" but not a "monster" (at least, not yet[??])
Then we get to "We'll be Fine" which, as I mentioned above, is essentially the new "Open Arms"
We'll Be Fine:
Athena lowers her guard & essentially bares her heart to Telemachus! She tells him about this mystery friend, about her regrets, the (semi) truth about why she helped him! ("You could show a person that you trust them, when you stop and lower your guard")
Telemachus takes this trust & greets Athena with open arms, offering her his friendship, his comfort & his advice
His positivity echoes Polites' from "Open Arms" as does his belief (despite T. living under the stress of the suitors & P. having lived through a war) that everything will be fine
"Maybe, it's all gonna turn out great I know we'll be fine"
"Whatever we face, we'll be fine if we're leading from the heart"
"I know it's light you'll find"
"No matter the place, we can light up the world"
Tbh, even though it's not a direct lyrical callback, I'd argue Telemachus' advice for Athena to reach out to her friend "Maybe, it's time that you lend a hand, I don't think he'll mind" is a thematic callback either to "Here we have a chance for some adjustment, Give it a try, it's not that hard" (it's not to late to make things better via your own actions/choices) or "Kindness is brave" (you want good things to happen? Take that first leap. Don't react with fear/be paralyzed by regret)
Love in Paradise
Just like Odysseus is convinced to (at least) consider an "Open Arms" approach by Polites, Athena has been convinced by Telemachus to reach out to her friend
God Games
Athena decides she CAN "Replace [her guilt] and light up the world" by helping Odysseus
She leads from the heart with the other gods! ESPECIALLY with Ares & her declaration of Telemachus being her friend!
All 5 of her opponents respond well to Athena's arguments, she's not just using logic, she IS appealing to their heart/sympathy as well, because SHE is doing this from a place of emotion/caring
"He can still build a future with those who miss him" "His son's my friend"
"Never once has he cheated on his wife"
Once she wins, we get Athena "goddess of wisdom/master of war" once more.
She declares herself triumphant in Zeus' game & demands her prize (which sets Zeus off)
But when Zeus strikes her down, Athena humbles herself, she lowers her guard, she leads from the heart, and she doesn't demand. She doesnt even ask. She pleads for Zeus to let Odysseus go. Heart/affection on full display.
Athena gets NOTHING from this. She's no longer demanding for a reward/recognition as the witty winner of Zeus' game, ("I played your game & won" vs "Please, let him go") just asking for Odysseus to receive help
THIS is when Zeus relents. Not when he strikes her down so hard that Ares fears her dead. Not (and I hate using visuals to analyze MUSIC, but I'll give myself an exception) when Athena's armor starts to crumble. Not when she bleeds. Not when she crawls. When Athena pleads for Odysseus, that's when Zeus falters.
And
Don't read past here if you don't want spoilers/titles/speculation for upcoming sagas!
It works.
We KNOW Hermes will be sent to Odysseus to get him off Ogygia.
And, while it seems (at least to me) that in "Wouldn't You Like" Hermes appears to Odysseus of his own accord/for funsies, "You're being given one final option" (from "Dangerous") sounds like this isnt a social visit.
Hermes is here as a messenger. And I doubt the gods are going behind Zeus back for this one.
My guess? Zeus relents. With the caveat that they'll intervene to get Calypso to let Odysseus go BUT, he has to make it off the island/back home by himself.
But still. Athena's heart-felt plea works. Her pride as the clever goddess of wisdom who beat her father's game got her struck down. But leading from the heart & pleading for her friend's release succeeds.
And this is why I think (narratively) we need to close off the themes established in "Open Arms"
At the end of this post here, i talk about how it'd be nice to get some sort of closure for Polites' philosophy. Maybe with Odysseus' final confrontation with Poseidon. Maybe with Telemachus.
But after the Wisdom Saga?
I no longer think it'd simply be nice. I think its necessary for narrative closure.
The Wisdom Saga just showed us Ruthlessness was not mercy for Odysseus, who is tormented by the deaths of his crew & is now suicidal after being trapped on Ogygia for 7 years.
Ruthlessness was not mercy for Athena, who can no longer sleep at night.
Ruthlessness does not get results for any of the main characters featured in the Wisdom Saga
The philosophy Polites describes in "Open Arms" however, DOES get results.
Its what leads Athena to help Telemachus. Its how Telemachus convinces Athena to reach out to her friend. It's how Athena convinces the other gods (possibly even Zeus) to help/release Odysseus.
I now think we need one last callback to those themes. Either by Athena, by admitting she was wrong back in "Warrior of the Mind" and "My Goodbye" to demand Odysseus turn off his heart (she was not able to turn off her own heart!! She can't sleep at night! + heart is how she wins the God Games!)
OR by Telemachus, Odysseus optimistic son, who (as of the Wisdom Saga) has nothing monstrous or ruthless about him.
Maybe Odysseus gets carried away as he kills the suitors, or goes after someone who surrenders & Telemachus steps in to rein him in.
Maybe Telemachus simply reminds Odysseus of Polites.
Idk.
But I can't see "Open Arms" featuring so heavily in the Wisdom Saga's themes/narrative for there to be narrative satisfaction without one final, definitive callback in the Ithaca Saga

A little bit of Levi angst inspired by the new AoT premiere. Season 4 Part 3 spoilers ahead!
-
He’s shaking again. He blames it on the scars, the damn ODM gear he’s forced to assemble onto his body. His body hasn’t fully recovered, it’s too soon to go back out into battle like this. But it’s not like he has much of a choice; it’s either die in here or die out there...and he's made his decision already.
A soft curse slips through his mouth. The damn trigger is acting up again, he’s not used to holding it with just two fingers. His muscles are straining, fingers quivering beneath the pressure, his heart leaping in his throat, mind a blurry mess—
Something warm closes over his fist. Warm and soft. And suddenly you’re kneeling down in front of him, staring up at him in that way you do, as though he hung the moon and stars. It does nothing to quell the fluttering in his chest.
“Hey,” your voice is soft and gentle, matching the look in your eyes, the way you clasp his trembling hand in yours. Wondering if he can feel you shaking too. “It’s alright. I’m here, okay?”
And Levi feels sick all over again; because as much as he’s grown to love you, as much as he admires your strength and courage and the hopeful look in your eyes...this is the one time he wishes you weren’t here with him.
Maybe you’d be safer if you’d stayed on the island. Maybe then you wouldn’t be staring certain death in the face. Maybe then you could forge a new life for yourself on the island. Start a family, a business, explore the uncharted lands of the island—whatever it is, it’s bound to be better than this.
And yet you’re here of all places, adjusting the straps of his ODM gear, tracing your nails over the space of his hand where his missing fingers should be. Leaning over and kissing him right on his bandaged cheek, right on the ragged scar that spans across his eye and lips.
Get out of here while you still can. Go with them on the ship, you’ll be safer there. The kids need you. We can handle this ourselves, you don’t need to get yourself killed like this.
But he knows better than to ask that of you. You’re the type to throw yourself into the fray without any regard for yourself; always eager to lend a helping hand, even at the cost of your life. Something he used to despise, something that still makes his teeth clench together and his hands twitch around nothing.
“We’ll get through this, okay?” You’re still smiling, albeit a little shakily, and you’re holding his hand a little tighter than before. “I promise, we’ll be fine.”
And Levi wonders, as you pull him close to your chest with a kiss, if he can allow himself to believe you, even just for one fleeting moment.

Not to harsh your joy regarding your personal project, (which does sound awesome!) the fact that you keep answering the "can I do fanfic?" questions with "technically yes, but have you considered not doing that?" does not actually *feel* very fanfic friendly. (Especially for anyone who enjoys fanfic as a hobby and isn't also an ofic writer. For example, I personally write almost exclusively character studies that are an explicit reaction to canon; there is no real way to write that sort of thing except as fanfic.)
Which is just a long-winded way of requesting that you maybe consider less of a caveat with the FAQ if you make one, please.
oh that was definitely not my intention, thanks for the ask! I think it was mostly just because I got that same question a few times in a row from various anons within the same time span (including some that were not published publicly), it just happened that I was thinking of my own project(s, plural now) in the last day when I answered those two, for those who want an extra creative challenge.
There's a reason my own original thing has been in my head for the last ten years without me actually writing it while I've written and posted tons of fanfiction, and even now some of my original works are going to be based on Arsene Lupin, so they'd technically be considered fanfiction since they're based on and use an established work for the characters and settings --
--writing completely original fic *is* harder, and that's exactly why I'm *suggesting* (not requiring!) that people consider taking 1 out of short story 4 challenges to look at their work in a new light.
90% of what I read and (until I actually start and finish my original works) 100% of what I've written in my life is fanfic. I have nothing against fanfic, otherwise I woudn't even be interested in creative writing.
But its also not a diss to say "Would you consider looking at your [fanfic] writing from a new angle and try to figure out different ways of going about it?"
Honestly, being able to even consider this option *as a fun extra challenge* is meant to help improve your writing and creative skills; it's not meant as a cheap shot at people who choose to write fanfiction because I my self write and read tons of it,
it's me saying "if you want even more practice at creative writing during these monthly challenges, try branching out a little bit from your comfort zone, you may be pleasantly surprised."
People who write and read fanfiction already have tons of creative experience, and if people like me and many other fanfic writers who one day dream of being published authors, want to broaden our horizons and seek new experiences, one of the easiest exercises is to take something we're planning on writing or already wrote, and see what we would change to make it brand new and standalone--
-- something that not only helps you come up with new ideas, but also will help when it comes time to *edit*, which can be, depending on the length and complexity of your story, can be a complicated process:
whether that means having to delete scenes entirely,
changing what a character says,
altering an aspect of the worldbuilding to fix plot holes
, re-writing your character so they're not overpowered because it was ruining the stakes and tension,
changing the POV of chapters because it was ruining the flow of the story,
etc etc etc.
I love fan fiction.
I love reading it and I love writing it, and for many people who take on monthly writing challenges, it is a way to test ourselves and gear ourselves up and prove to ourselves that not only can we write x amount of words, but it proves to ourselves that we are *capable of creating*, and for many creatives, that ultimately leads to crafting our own unique stories;
if you're already taking place in a monthly writing challenge, why not push the bounds a little bit *if you're so inclined* and test the waters? Especially when you're surrounded by a community who is cheering you on, every step of the way?
Every Nanowrimo I ever won was fanfiction. Heck, even not during November I once did 40k words in two weeks for a fic.
I always stalled out when I tried to write original works;
it is much easier to start small with a single short story than it is to try to write an entirely original novel, and my encouraging people to try baby steps by *experimenting* with one short story out of four in a month is not meant to be a diss against fanfiction,
but an *encouragement to those like me* who were so eager to write original works but floundered when I tried to jump into the deep end and felt disheartened.
Many fanfic authors aspire to write original fics, and thats who that challenge is for, for the people who want to write original works but are too afraid to fully commit; I'll still be writing and posting fanfiction even if I become a published author, even If I just have to come up with a few new pen-names to post them under.
There's absolutely no judgement on anyone who wants to write fanfiction for these challenges, my "caveat" as you say, is only there as encouragement to those like me who are afraid to take the first step, or uncertain of how to even *begin* that first step, not any kind of condemnation.
TL;DR:
I did not mean for my responses on the "can I write fanfiction" to come off as rude or looking down on fanfiction, its meant to be an encouragment to all the people like me who love fanfic and started out writing fanfiction, and dream of writing original works to take the first step, with a community of like-minded people all taking the same challenge.
Like every other challenge aspect of these events, taking a fanfic idea and turning it into an original short story is completely optional and meant as inspiration, just like following prompts for events is not mandatory, and even completing the 30k word goal is not mandatory; the goal for this month is to create, get in the habit of creating, and having fun with it!

“Should I fill it all the way up or nah?” Daryl questioned you, holding the tray in his hands.
You shifted your attention from the stove to him. “No, only three fourths of the way. That's what my mom taught me.”
Daryl nodded and followed your instructions, carefully pouring the custard into the dough-filled muffin cups. Afterwards he handed the muffin tray to you, carefully observing as you placed the tray in the preheated oven.
Daryl leaned back against the counter. “How long do we need to bake it fer?” he questioned, motioning towards the oven.
You joined him against the counter, leaning your head against his shoulder. Daryl stiffened momentarily before relaxing, wrapping his arm around your shoulder and pulling you closer into his side. He pressed a soft, tender kiss against your temple, smiling softly when you let out a small giggle.
“For about one and a half hours,” you answered him, checking the time on your wristwatch. “So we have to take it out at about four-thirty. Then we let it cool down for ten minutes and then we have ourselves some delicious Pastéis De Nata.”
Daryl hummed. “Portuguese Custard tart?”
You rolled your eyes at him, sending a playful smile up at him. “Sure, if you want to be a falante de inglês chato,” you joked, earning a faint, playful jab to your side, making you laugh. “Hey! Do you even know what I said?”
“Nope,” Daryl replied, shaking his head with a faint smile on his face. “But I do know tha' it probably wasn't a compliment.”
“You're right about that,” you laughed and nodded, nuzzling yourself snuggly against his side. However, you withdrew from his hold when he flinched in pain, sending him a concerned look. “What's wrong, amor?”
Daryl shook his head. “Nothin'. Jus' my father who got a bit carried away last nigh'. Nothin' I can't handle.”
Your heart sank to the depths of your stomach at his revelation. You took his hand in yours and interlaced your fingers, squeezing his hand reassuringly. However, you knew that Daryl hated addressing his home life out loud, so you opted to try and cheer him up.
“You know, we could run away together.”
Daryl raised his eyebrows in surprise, an amused smile gracing his beautiful features. “Yeah?” he asked, looking into your eyes. “And where would we even go?”
“Brazil,” you answered instantly, shrugging your shoulders. “I might be biased, but I do believe that it's one of the most beautiful countries in the world. I just know you'd love it.”
Daryl thought it over for a moment, before letting out an approving hum. “Well, let's say I agree to run away with ya to Brazil. What would we even do?”
“A gente poderia ir no Carnaval, e talvez visitar meus avós,” you mumbled to yourself, soothingly rubbing your thumb over your boyfriend's knuckles. You giggled at the confused look he gave you. “It doesn't matter what I said. We could do anything you want, gatinho. Just name it and I'd make it happen.”
“I've always wanted to go check out what Brazilians do during that festival ya keep ravin' 'bout,” he admitted, shrugging his shoulders. “So we could start with tha'?”
You smiled and nodded. “Anything you want, amor. We'd have to wait for Carnaval to start in a couple of months, but we could make it happen.”
Daryl smiled. “Have I ever told ya tha' I love ya?”
“You have,” you nodded, stepping into Daryl's arms and peering up at him. “And I do, too. Eu te amo tanto.”
You leaned in and kissed Daryl on the lips, savouring the taste of him. However, the moment was short-lived, because the power soon went out, causing you and Daryl to look at each other in confusion.
“Well,” Daryl started, looking towards the oven. “Guess tha's gon' take longer to get ready.”
You rolled your eyes at him. “Seriously? That's your concern?”
“Wha' can I say?” Daryl mused, sending you a playful smile. “I was really lookin' forward to tha' custard tart. Would've packed some fer our journey to Brazil.”

Child of God
A perspective of being God's children.
We often hear people say that we are children of God, but have you ever really put thought into it? Here are a few observations that I've seen:
We are children of God, meaning that we are made in his image. We are all beautiful, chosen, cherished, treasured, enough, loved, and right just the way we are. God created us perfectly according to his plan. He already knew everything about us before we were even born. God loves us wholly even when we don't.
How cool is it that we are children of God? I mean, we are literally the only things here on earth that were made in his image. Would you not want to share that with everyone? If you're not going to share it for yourself, then share it for others. They might not be aware of how awesome they are!
Just like a loving parent, God loves us and wants what's best for us. However, we - like rebellious teenagers - tend to think that we already know all that we need to, and that we don't need any help. We think that we can handle things all by ourselves, but then later we find out that we can't. I hope that you can put your life in God's hands and stop trying to go on your own path.
My nap and snack philosophy. Even if we are adults, we are really just children [God's children] deep down. If I am ever struggling with something or frustrated, I will go take a nap (and maybe have a snack), and it's all better. My mind is clearer, and I'm able to solve the issue better. Is that not how toddlers work, too?
Just like a kid vs adult, our knowledge is much lesser than God's knowledge. There are so many things that we are unaware of that God has handled. Thank goodness he has our backs.
Does that change your perspective on being a child of God?
I hope I was able to provide a little bit on insight for you.
Have a wonderful week, and God bless.
...
If you have any questions regarding the Christian faith, please ask me in my ask box. I am not a perfect person, but I will try and answer your questions as best as I can. We all have much more to learn, myself included. So please, do not be shy.

Life Update: Coming Out
A bit of a vulnerable post today (TW for vague mentions of transphobia).
I fully came out to my mother this evening regarding my gender identity (I've been living stealth for months after we had some pretty serious issues when I initially tried to come out). This time went far better than expected - not perfect, there's still things that need to be unpackaged, but she recognises that and is willing to grow toward understanding; plus, she has a lot of the fundamental bits all right. We smiled, we laughed, I definitely cried, we would have hugged if I wasn't in another country right now.
I'm still reeling and a bit raw. I've been fortunate and not, I've found community and rejection, and I'm still very new to this (my pansexuality has long been out in the open, but I have found the experience very different coming out regarding gender - it brings its own very particular challenges and beauties alike). This time it was reassuring and bittersweet and painful, but worth it. I feel authentic and like myself. I'm happy to have her and her love and support in my life.
To people who are currently living stealth or are considering coming out, I send you boundless love and kindness. You are beautiful in your uniqueness. You are incredible in your diversity. You are radiant in your expression. You are not alone. People can grow and change and understand. Some can't, and it hurts, by all rights and by all that is just and wonderful in this world, no one should ever have to be afraid or ashamed or shunned for being themself, but it is those people who are often just themselves afraid, who are shaken by the idea that there could be more to life than categories and binaries and rigid boxes and labels. It doesn't justify an ounce of the suffering that comes out of those fears. Not at all. Maybe they will never see how expansive the world truly is. Yet even if it hurts, even if that reality of them never knowing how beautiful the world is, is sorrowful to think about, we have to keep on. We have to keep choosing love for ourselves. We have to keep choosing authenticity. I know everyone says it but truly, the people who love you will not only embrace you but will celebrate you wholeheartedly and they will always be there.
I hope that these words connected with you. I'm usually not this open online, but I wanted to share my heart with you so this might help someone, somewhere.
You are all wondrous and deserve the world. I hope you have the most incredible day (or night).
With love, T.C.

so how do you think it would be best for American leftists to label ourselves, if not socialist? i've always seen socialism as one of the more palatable terms for leftism. i agree that meeting people where they are + responding thoughtfully and compassionately to their concerns is essential, but i also think we need to use the terms which accurately describe us, and *show* through our community building and efforts that dictators like Castro and Stalin do not represent us
Frankly -- and this is never going to actually happen, but I can dream -- I honestly wish the left would just abandon the word "socialism" altogether. It's never going to be palatable in the American context, there's never going to be a moment where you can just use it and have people immediately know what you mean and/or that you mean the "good" kind of socialism and not the "bad," and it's heretofore been one of the most effective cudgels for the right-wing noise machine to hit us with. Maybe when the older generations all die out, we might have a shot at rehabilitating it, but not until then, and definitely not with the way things are going right now. I'd say that the left can keep it to use among themselves if they have to, but since the one thing that leftists love to do is attack other leftists for being Insufficiently Pure, I'm not even sure it has any use in that regard. It's become an empty signifier and it has, so far as I can see, no real critical use (a bit like "feudalism" to a medieval historian, but never mind that).
Besides, what are we actually saying with the word "socialism," and in some way that we can't rephrase and say more effectively? I would define the progressive/left-wing Democratic agenda as focused on achieving economic and racial justice, protections for women, minorities, LGBTQ+ people, abortion rights, workers, etc., reforming or otherwise significantly changing the late-stage capitalist system, fighting climate change and promoting green initiatives, and other similar policies. How exactly does the word "socialism" signify any of that, and why is it necessary that we keep it? Especially when it's been proven that this does not help us win elections and drives away the Mushy Middle voters that we have to convince to vote for us long enough to actually keep a Democratic administration/Congress in power to make changes, rather than seesawing back to the GOP every few years and putting us even more miserably behind the 8-ball?
This doesn't mean we should BE Mushy Middlemen ourselves, or aspire for some milquetoast centrism that solves nothing and pleases no one, but rather we need to figure out how to make Middle America embrace our policies as they are and how to make them attractive in that context. I think Biden did this very well with his re-election video, where he cast the Democrats as the party of freedom. This is the most American word you can possibly think of, and Americans are predisposed to like anything associated with that word. Heretofore the GOP has had a total stranglehold on it, and defined it very narrowly as military triumphalism and personal freedom to be a dick to everyone you encounter and do whatever you want while trampling over the rights of others. But that's obviously a wildly hypocritical and distorted version of "freedom," in the most Orwellian sense imaginable, and the Democrats actually are the party of freedom: freedom to live your life how you choose, freedom to make choices about your own body, freedom to let your kids be who they want and learn the truth and not get murdered in school, freedom to not live in an authoritarian repressive fascist theocracy. For way too long, Democrats have just meekly ceded the "freedom" word to Republicans, who have shit all over it and made it meaningless the way they have with everything else, and that's a major error.
Likewise, "justice" is another word that the Republicans have appropriated to mean "locking up black people for anything we want and mindlessly worshiping cops," but which Democrats need to get into reclaiming. Everybody can see for themselves how wildly corrupt and unjust the GOP-packed federal judiciary and SCOTUS is (with scandal-a-day Clarence Thomas and the rest of the Federalist Society monsters). The Democrats have a golden opportunity to -- accurately -- cast themselves as the party of justice: economic, racial, climate, gender, etc etc. It's already been proven that "defund the police" is a bad message, so don't SAY that. But talk about an overall scheme of achieving justice, and Middle America likes that! They like to see themselves as generally fair and supporting people who "play by the rules." Yes, of course the law is by nature unjust, but we can still make that messaging work to our advantage to get them to support us.
Basically, I want to see leftists and Democrats alike use the language that the country is predisposed to like: words like justice, freedom, fairness, equality, etc. It's harder to smear somebody as a nasty anti-American socialist (not, of course, that the right wing won't try) if they're talking about those things, especially freedom, and especially in a left/liberal context as the GOP becomes ever more paranoid, fascist, and authoritarian. Besides, they know they're in the minority. Abortion bans aren't popular (they really, REALLY aren't popular). Book bans aren't popular. Attacks on women, LGBTQ+ rights, and trans kids aren't popular. Election denialism and attempted coups aren't popular. Endless and unrestricted assault weapons aren't popular. Yes, a fringe part of this country is awfully and irredeemably poisoned by theocratic fascist white supremacy, but they're still not the majority, and we don't need to act like they are, or write off everybody who's not a Terminally Online Leftist as impossible to ever reach or convince. That just provides a convenient excuse for not doing any work and just letting things get worse.
So like... the Democrats and the leftists alike need to lean into these words and stop letting Republicans monopolize them with their idiot and hypocritical definitions. They also need to reckon with the fact that for a not-insignificant portion of visible and vocal tankie-leftists, they DO want to emulate Castro and Stalin, or at the very least, not care at all about the historical baggage that comes with those names. They feel that any terrible dictator was secretly good if they were a) anti-American and b) describable as "leftist" in some vague and overarching sense of the word, and that's sure as hell not going to convince John and Jane Q. NiceIowaCouple to like them. It sure as hell doesn't convince ME to like them, and I'm already a leftist/liberal who has never voted for a Republican in my life. And because we are at such a dangerous moment where we've escaped fascism but it's still trying with all its might to come back, we really, really can't afford this. It's stupid and it's useless and it's just mean.
Anyway: I want people to stop f'n using the word "socialism," especially since most of them couldn't actually define what it means, what it has meant in the past, or why any benefits outweigh the clear and obvious costs. Start talking about justice, freedom, and fairness instead, show how those things can be improved with Democrats/progressives/liberals in charge instead of Republicans, and then act accordingly. I think that might work better.

hmmm is there any specific analysis of tvl youve been dying to share but havent been asked about yet?
ok. there’s a lot. but some I don’t want to do right now for SPOILERY REASONS. some of them are as follows:
- the fundamental misunderstanding that passively occurred between tvl ladynoir for most of tvl
- the way tvl chat noir ‘tests’ ladybug throughout the story and why he does what he does and why he behaves in seemingly ‘bizarre’ ways
- a lot of the others r um. I can’t even share the topic regarding it bc you guys haven’t gotten to whatever chapter it’s linked to yet (feel free to ask any questions tho! be it now or after future chapters. that’s usually what awakens the intense TED talks I give about tvl to myself in my head)
right now tho? I want to pick apart tvl adrien being an actor and why that is and why that’s sad and how it came to be
-> like with many parts of tvl! adrien being an actor is sort of thrust upon readers. it’s a story that places a Huge gap between canon and the tvl timeline, and some details can be inferred, but loads of stuff aren’t things a reader can know for sure
-> also, due to the set up of the story, most of the tiny teased bits of info regarding tvl Adrien’s life leading up to and At 23, is largely fed to readers by tvl marinette, and not tvl adrichat himself, despite most of the story being his pov. but the scenes he is allotted are largely those where he Interacts with ladybug, and when he is with her, he doesn’t think of much else, unless it’s specifically relevant (like the love marks conundrum)
-> he just doesn’t unpack his past in his thoughts very much. however much it pains him. because it’s not something he’d prefer to unpack is how ladybug is making him feel and how he feels about her bc she’s Right There and she has this Hold on his heart that he can’t help but fixate over
-> but what you can tell is that he doesn’t really want to be doing his job… rather he sees it as a means to an end. and also an inevitability in a sense 😔 very. You Can Take The Man Outta The City Not The City Out The Man core. it’s. the ones who abuse us can leave but the effects of that abuse aren’t as easy to shake. it’s also. sometimes we wind up doing what we ran away from but we pat ourselves on the back saying it’s different bc we chose it, or it’s not the same because we wound up in a hole two steps away from what we were originally doing and that’s a different hole so it’s okay maybe!. its. was this too hard to break away from? or was it just too easy to go back to because its all we were ever taught?
-> because imagine ur tvl adrien in uni and your friends have always had passions for things that are vaguely related to industries that you suffered in as a kid. your best friend wants to be a dj but he also loves directing and talks so passionately about his favorite films and DREAMS of making One Of The Greats one day. his gf who is also one of your best friends is into journalism and your ex gf who is also one of your best friends loves designing and fashion. and you used to be a model but don’t want to be a model anymore. u make some small movies to help your best friend with his projects for film classes. they’re so fun! you love how it brings you and your friends together. your ex who you never really got over helps make costumes, shyly puts makeup on you, your best friend’s gf promotes it on her massively successful blog. the public mostly cares about it because you were in it and you’re the kind of famous that doesn’t ever go away. you WISH it would go away. but then you try to see the bright side of it. your best friend is so happy people like his short film. he gets an A for the class. you accidentally get another friend even MORE heavily considered for the job she’s been talking about non stop all week because you mentioned knowing her. you get pressured into doing a film because they say they’ll give your best friend an important role on the crew. little by little it all builds up and this is just your career now
-> but you find little ways to take control. you realize you get to decide who works with you and for you and you see your Good Best Friend Ex who just started complaining about how little the internship she’s doing pays. you think you could take away her pain so easily. and it makes it all less painful for you. it’s such an even trade. but then your Partner Against Magic Crime starts taking up more of your time and you realize you WANT all the time that you can get, and having Something To Do In The Day becomes an absolute chore again, and maybe you don’t care how happy it could make the public and how Excited your fans will be
-> this manifests in all the little asides you see in tvl where he Suggests quitting his job all the time and Thinks about it a lot
-> At the same time. who doesn’t wanna quit their job. he’s just a little guy. surely he’s worked enough for several lifetimes

Hiya! Regarding PluralKit, do you have advices/tips on how to make a neat/aesthetic descriptions? Inspirations for examples on how to make one, or like- a copy paste of the template? Sorry if I'm asking a lot whoop-
🪺 (She/Her) & 🍎 (He/Him) & 🌀 (She/Her) & <3 (She/Her) Began Writing
😐🏹 (He/Him), 😐📖 (He/Him) Finishing.
Hi, sorry for the lateness of answering this ask. And thank you for sending in an ask! ❣️ And don't worry you're not asking too much!
So pluralkit is a bit tricky when it comes to making descriptions as for some systems it might be difficult to keep your information below the character limit. We even ourselves struggle with making a very pleasant aesthetic bio for pluralkit ourselves.
Our main tips are limited with Pluralkit bios specifically; but we might be able to get something!
Actively conversate and make sure you know what you're wanting, what you need, and what you can leave out! If you can't convey everything in just the bio of your pluralkit page, possibly try working that information into individual headmates/sysmates bios!
Take advantage of online guides like discord servers that help with aesthetic pluralkit bios, and definitely maybe dip your own toes into the idea of making your own!
A lot of premade templates exist by simply googling "Pluralkit/Tupperbox System Bio Templates". Tumblr as a million, but there are few and very far between, especially taking into account syscourse and people making templates specifically for and only for traumagenic systems, limiting the resources.
We personally definitely recommend using these carrds here as its something of a common practice to use symbols that are from other languages like Japanese or Arabic as aesthetic symbols for rain or stars, and it messes with screen readers.
Make sure to take and leave as you will! We honestly in most advice asks here asking about how to organize and such will offer as much inspiration as we can! While also encouraging people to seek what they want to display if they have an idea, and leave what you as a system don't wish to explore.
So we actually are going to put our own template making skills to use and make a broad base template any system can use!:

Interpreting struggle and other people
Yesterday, I found out arsehat (my ex)’s best friend committed suicide a week or two ago. Our aunt and uncle said it was because his wife nagged him. Let me tell you, aside from being not do subtly sexist, this is a lazy excuse. It’s usually not JUST because someone nagged you. If it were that easy, nagging would be a legally punishable crime. Cheating on a partner is a worse crime, and folks don’t usually break the law for it. No no.
Let me tell you - when you are emotionally struggling, anything can eventually set you off. I know this all too well. I was there. I tried to kill meself when I was 19. It’s not the proudest moment, to say the least. It was necessary though. It helped refocus and learn to become stronger. This isn’t true for everyone, especially when they aren’t as tempered to deal with struggle.
Apparently this man had what appeared to be ab idyllic life - he was a multimillionaire. He had a wife, kids. You may ask why would he do such a thing then? Because we may think he had everything, but we must not assume. He obviously did not have happiness. He struggled with internal issues that he was unable to confront. There could be many reasons for this - cultural, societal, even physical. Maybe he was in perfect health. Maybe he got a diagnosis he was just unable to come to terms with. We don’t know. Maybe his job caused stress. Maybe family pressures contributed. Maybe all of these things….or maybe….none of them.
Whilst this is surely NOT exclusive to those who are wealthy, as even poor folks can be raised with this mentality - being privileged and entitled makes you weak. You are delusional from the start, and it makes reasoning that much more challenging.
I’ve had a lot of people jump to conclusions about me instead of trying to actually listen and understand. Challenge ur own thinking. I recently shared a series of incidents that occurred in past months.
I’m in me 40’s. Months ago, I was harassed by a teenager on Reddit. He made extremely vulgar, detailed sexual comments about me. He got others to hang up and spread rumours. Why? Because i defended another, innocent young person who he was harassing. Recently, i was banned in a discord group for trains because a minor posted very sexually suggestive images of anime schoolgirls with their breasts on display photoshopped into train pics. A mod defended this, going so far as to ask if I ‘wore a fucking tent’. At the same time, this mod claimed I’d make inappropriate jokes. I made jokes that were no worse than anyone else, and never flirted with anyone, never posted pornographic images. The mod and the kid are closer in age to each other, and the mod had prior bias towards me. He’s had it out for me ever since I had joined. The harasser had apparently been in the discord before I joined, and spread lies about me before I was even there. I had no idea.
The person I recounted this to blamed me. They acted like I was the villain. They listened to what they wanted to hear only. This is not appropriate communication. You need to listen to the entire story, even if it’s not comfortable. Don’t judge based on bias or prejudice. It misleads you, it’s foolish. Even worse, it’s toxic. It can hurt others.
Perhaps, if that man had an outlet he was able to trust, it could have saved him. Sometimes, no matter how hard you try, some people are unable to open up. I get that. However, I am well aware that there are multiple sides to a story, and when we are conditioned to too much comfort, it clouds our ability to deal with things - both regarding ourselves and others. Living a comfortable life, and then suddenly (or not so suddenly) having to deal with struggle can be devastating. When we choose to victim blame, that only makes it worse. Be a bit more ware of how what you say and do effects others. You never know how it can impact someone else.

Also, Henry never died in the tunnel. He does get laid in there tho. He’s a big handsome steam engine, what can I say?

A Grand Admiral's Job Is Never Done
*****
MC: thank you for inviting me with you to visit the naval base, Lord Diavolo.
Diavolo: you're quite welcome. Lucifer informed me that the current topic of your cultural studies class is "Devildom War History." Not the most pleasant of subjects, I take it?
MC: admittedly, some of the events are a bit...graphic, yet still worth knowing.
Diavolo: agreed. Which is why I figured as an exchange student you'd like to experience what a Hell's Navy base has to offer. Speaking of which...
Captain Vepar: *salutes* Lord Diavolo, a pleasure.
Diavolo: good evening, Captain. MC, this is Captain Vepar. Captain Vepar, this is MC, an exchange student from the human realm.
MC: *shakes his hand* hello, sir. I've read about you in my Devildom History course. Frankly, I find you terrifying.
Captain Vepar: as you should.
Diavolo: Captain Vepar is one of the most decorated officers in Hell's Navy due to his more....unorthodox methods.
Captain Vepar: no need to sugar coat the truth, my Lord. The brutality of war has been nearly perfected by their kind, after all.
MC: the war between the Devildom and Celestial Realm lasted for centuries. Did you...really kill that many angels?
Captain Vepar: as many as my kind were killed, yes. Here's a secret: one needs to really sink their nails into the vertebrae, which helps for a cleaner pull. Like ripping the wings off an insect *leans in closer and smiles* or the arms off a human.
MC: *smiles back* is that so?
Diavolo: let's not tease them too much, Captain.
Captain Vepar: apologies, my Lord. It's been a while since I've watched a human squirm before me, though this one seems...unperturbed. Are they broken?
MC: no offense, yet compared to what I've experienced so far, you might as well be asking me out to dinner.
Captain Vepar: ... *laughs* I like this one! They've got a few "marbles loose in the bowl," if you know what I mean! You'd make an excellent sailor regarding if you can survive the swim test.
MC: I'm good at swimming.
Captain Vepar: you have to jump 30 feet into a pool filled with lava.
MC: maybe not that good.
Captain Vepar: yes, a Hell's Navy recruit must be prepared to physically endure any and all elements, whether that be raining shards of glass, flesh searing snow, rivers of screaming souls in anguish. Besides, the lava pool can be quite refreshing. Helps loosen the old muscles.
Diavolo: and builds character.
*The sound of anguished screaming is heard in the distance*
MC: I...*blinks* Oh wow, check out that guy over there in the fancy uniform. Is he a...general?
Diavolo: not quite. Though he is of great importance.
MC: now that I think about it, he does look familiar...wait *squints eyes* No. That can't be...Leviathan?
Diavolo: *laughs* indeed it is. Though Grand Admiral Leviathan to be precise.
MC: WHAT?
Diavolo: oh yes. Leviathan holds the highest rank within Hell's Navy. There was suppose to be a chapter dedicated to his efforts, however such an addition was deemed too...controversial.
Captain Vepar: *mumbles quietly* damn right it was. Meanwhile, I've been working my tailfin off for a promotion the last 4000 years *spats* damn nepotism.
MC: whoa, whoa, whoa, whoa this has to be a joke. Maybe he's filling in for someone else? Or has a secret twin? Or maybe he has amnesia and just thinks he's a--
Diavolo: --how about we follow him and see for ourselves? Captain Vepar, if you'll excuse us.
Captain Vepar: of course, Lord Diavolo. And take care, human. From experience, your kind tends to die quickly, yet if you ever find yourself back in the Devildom, Hell's Navy is always searching for new recruits *sighs* damn lava pool.
MC: I'll...keep that in mind.

Captain Vepar
Tumblr media
The once honorable captain. Has been in (temporary) retirement with no wars to fight, however. His ability to coordinate and control the flow of the very oceans his ships cross has proved invaluable.  When he leads a fleet, none of his missions end in failure. Was one of the Demon King's closes allies and at one point in time, his greatest confidant.
Though he respects his son Diavolo greatly, he believes the eventual king to be lacks the brutality and willpower necessary to run the Devildom as his father did before him.
Sin: lust
Likes: the smell of gunfire, the heat of battle, armored ships, relaxing in the lava pool, the vastness of the open sea.
Dislikes: surrendering, long meetings, paperwork, stagnation, Leviathan.
