Alright FFXIV Fandom, If things go well for our Zero and she becomes a scion or at least another heroic member of our merry band- I better see at least ONE AMV with her using the song Zero to Hero from Disney’s Hercules. You just can’t ignore it. I don’t care if it’s low hanging fruit.

SIMBLR GOALZ 2020 - Sul Sul
My ladies @cillaben and @sani-sims4 tagged me to do dis shizzle, LOL! Thank you, my sweet lovelies - You guys know I love to be tagged, hehe!
Um yeah...along with new Simblr Goalz I’m going to start this month something life-changing a re-education because I want to be able to program software. Yup, have way more goals to achieve beside Tumblr, hehehe. I signed up to join training to become a specialist for software development. By the end of the next year, I will be able to develop digital software. Sue is going to be a real programmer, hehe! You guys can’t imagine that this was a dream of mine since I worked the first time ever on a pc at the beginning of the 90ties (for those who know what I’m talking about yep it used to be a Commodore 64 with Windows 3.1 hahaha). Can’t imagine that anymore, tho - how horrible 😆 ! It’s never too late to learn, you know. I’m actually very excited to learn new things.
Take a look I did an upgrade and improvement on my simself ;) Yep will change my old pic here too. My hair got so much longer in the meantime and I love it but I guess I have to cut it a bit shorter.... hair care is too time-intense! Luckily @enriques4 has the right hair length to represent me *_* so shout out and big thanks  😍.
I have several goals which I want to achieve this year  Here we go! 😌 Sue is all over the place - hehe! But it would not be me if I wouldn’t go for it you know... 😂
Character Page: Need to make the pics and finish it finally, oh boi.
Allure of Darkness: Be more consistent - at least on a weekly I base and I think I will go for weekends. I had a gap here and run out of inspiration on how to continue. I wrote a bunch of stuff but it doesn’t fit the current stage. Since yesterday I have inspiration on how to proceed. Kinda stuck here for a while, upsies. I have a ton of drafts for different scenes but they need to fit ;) and they will all come, so no worries about that. I’m so not done with this story-legacy of mine - lol and I’m not as far as I wish I would be.
The Secret of Rain: Going to finish it hopefully until May, my birth month ;) So expect a bunch of twists and turns. RJ just started to do his first steps to move to his dark side. From now on you will get here and there a thriller vibe... but need to get there first - I just started a few more scenes and I hope you will love the tension I’m going to create. We need RJ to be in the mood, you know LOL ;)
Legacy: I will start a story-based legacy once I finish RJ’s story. It will be a complex only human-related story so no supernaturals at all  😎. Working hard on the complexity of my new characters which I have in mind and some stuff is written, already. I want some in-depth characters and hopefully a great story. I want to outline and flesh them out so that they are really good at least I hope they will be. It won’t be a story for everyone but those who love drama, pleasure and pain will adore it - I hope. Since I do admire the Holmes Legacy as you are may aware =D by Josie @ellemant. Because of you Josie I started to write my stories.  You are truly an inspiration and I adore and love your Holmes Fam so much as you know.
Micke’s Movies Series: Kinda stuck at my “Mafia Plot” and had no idea how to continue but I will finish the last few posts within the upcoming weeks @cillaben  But I’m on it  😍
Upload of my fav & new builds: Will continue to do that  😍
Sim Dumps: Yeah I talked about it, I will do this from time to time, 😏I guess
Improving CC Skills: I’m experimenting with Blender and I need more practice before I feel comfy enough to release something but I’m excited because once I’m able to create something I’m satisfied with I will probably get addicted to it and create the stuff I want in my game...
Continue to comment and be supportive: You all know that if you talk to me I do respond - yeah I may keep talking and talking but hey that’s my nature I’m a talkative persona and love to talk... so you can always look forward to my response and read about my nonsense answers LOL.
Admire fellow simmers: Gosh so many of you are so ahead of me and gifted. When you guys like my stuff I’m like whuuut, are you for real? I start to blush, okay? I get cheezy and repetitive LOL. I love your style, your mind, your ideas geez dunno honestly where to start so many of you are simply awesome so I will keep admire your skills, your edits, your content and keep loving you for giving me joy, laughter, and fun. But the most important part is you give me a reason to do what I do here ;).
So I will tag only few @zykatekb @ellemant @serena-6 most of you have done it already. But you, yeah if I haven’t tagged please feel tagged. Let’s see how many goals I will achieve - I’m getting myself in trouble as usual! Hahaha

Manit's creative technologies journey 25/02/2019
Hello my name is Manit. I enrolled into AUT colab because I have set free from all my responsibilities and now I can do whatever I want. Now I have more time. I’ve always had a skill for being creative, naturally it’s who I am to explore creativeness. I am a multi-passionate entrepreneur, I consider myself not limited. Studying creative technologies will give me skills to achieve my greatest dreams.
26/02/2019
Today was the 2nd day of colab. Definitely an interesting one, we all had loads of fun socializing. We were in groups for multiple activities. One activities was interviewing and communication skills. For this, we were the only group that had 4 people. We kinda broke the rules of the observer on this one. The observer was not supposed to contribute in anyway in the conversation. We all ended up just talking about our-selves, sharing our skills, goals and personalities. The goal of the activity was to get information about each following the activity's guidelines. And so then weren’t successful in the activity but we did get to know each other a little bit.
We’ve already been given two papers on a our 2nd day. This ain’t no joke huh?
Activities:
- Make a 3min vlog about our-selves and why we chose AUT colab.
- In a group, create playing cards targeted at a chosen audience.
My group was very collaborative. We made a google doc and shared it to everyone in our group. This way we can work on it whenever and wherever. We can share all ideas live and everyone had edit privileges. I believe working this way is ideal because it gives us freedom and diversity. I was satisfied with the progress I had made today with my team. I ended the day going the minor’s electives at WG403. I can feel the pressure is real. I’m not the type of person to complete tasks on a deadline. But I’m not gonna quit yet.
27/02/2019
Today was our first class with Stefan for “Programming for creativity”. We were introduced to “programming”, a software used to implement actions and change visual features of certain tasks using the software language. I played with it enough to understand how to navigate the interface. I am still to learn the language more in-depth.
28/02/2019
Mind-mapping our ideas for “cards for play” and repeating the process over to see what differences we have in our mind-maps.
29/02/2019
Played monopoly with the gang because it was a free day.
04/03/2019
I need to re-visit this day for re-cap.
I was absent until 12/03/2019
12/03/2019
Today we had class with Ricardo. He talked about design fundamentals and process.
2nd lecture with Ben, We had a guest speaker come in (Stephan Reay), to represent DWH, https://www.initiate-collaborate.com/ and http://www.goodhealthdesign.com/projects/cardsfordementia/
They are a design group that partnered with Auckland Health. The purpose of their design group is to create new or better services for patients with dementia and such illnesses.
13/03/2019
Programming for creativity with Stefan. This is y 2nd class with Stefan, I missed last week’s session. Today we were shown slides on coding practices for the Processing program. Our first assignment is due on the 15th.
Our vlog is due today. Ben said it has been extended until next week.
For our  “play for cards” project we play tested our 7th time. We got some really good feedback from the testers. Our testers said our game is too similar to charades. They suggested we implement an element to make it different or new. They also had trouble understanding our rules of the game. We had to re-write some of it.
14/03/2019
I was late to class today.
15/03/2019
Today we went exploring and got students outside of our class to play test our “Xpress Yoself”. We played tested two groups. It was our 8th and 9th test. The first group all knew eachother, They had a hard understanding the rules. The second group didn’t know eachother and they understood the rules a bit better.

Final Thoughts
Working on this module was harder than expected. It wasn't so much that I struggled working on the new technique, but it was more of a creativity problem.
Since I couldn't work on my original idea, coming up with a new one was very hard. I had a creative art block for a couple of days, and I found myself starting an Idea and then abandoning it in the matter of hours, which eventually got very frustrating. Eventually I did find an idea, but it felt more like I was settling than it felt like I was making something I liked. And I think that's visible in the final result.
When it comes to the technical part of things, I think I did quite well with merging my animation with my clips. Some clips look a bit off , since I couldn't figure out how too add the shadows correctly, and I didn't have the time to re-render, but over all, I think I did alright . I do wish I had time to figure out how to rig my penguin model, But I had tried model rigging a few times before and no matter how many tutorials I followed I never could get it right. At the end of the day however I do think that the penguins more blocky movements help signify that he is, well, a toy.
Moreover, figuring out how to add my animation to my footage was quite fun. It was the first time I had ever properly worked with after effects and it was nice learning to handle a new software. Besides since I familiarized myself with this process I think it would be quite easy to try and create more complex compositions in the future.
Lastly, the editing. The editing is always my favourite part of a project. Especially in this project, I was really struggling to like my animation, up until I added the music and the greyscale effect, after that it felt like the animation came to life, It felt more fun to watch and so quirky. I believe it just added a lot of character to the clip that it just was missing before.
Overall, I did learn a lot on this module, and I learned a lot of knowledge that I would like to work on more in the future. I am not fully satisfied with my result, as I didn't feel like it was up to my standards but, considering the time I had left and the fact that I was stuck without my equipment, I think I managed pretty well, but I do want to strive for better results in the future.

RE: Paranormal / Ghost Hunting Software
From: Dennis A. Batchelor
Dear Ghost Hunting Enthusiast,
he Biggest problem I’ve found in my 30+ years of doing Paranormal Investigations and Ghost Hunting has always been keeping track of my equipment and safely storing the information I’ve gathered while doing an investigation.
Rather the information was from a personal interview or background history of the location it was always a major task not to lose or misplace my notes, not to mention how and where to store my EVP’s and photographs without having 20 piles of stuff lying around waiting to be lost.
When I became founder of my own investigative team the problem’s only got bigger. I  found the need to keep track of all the equipment, which over time began to be more and more difficult as my collection of tool, equipment and gadgets continued to grow and still does to this day.
I discovered that as my team began to grow I needed to have instant access to their personal info such as address, phone and email. Just as important, I needed  to be able to know what types equipment they’ve used and how many investigation they were part of.
When our team was small, it was easy to drop a couple emails to get information out to the team… But as we grew, sending email became a greater task as well. I thought to myself… how nice it would be if I could email everyone all at once with 1 click of a button.
But by far the BIGGEST Challenge was after collecting all the background information, doing all the interviews, noting information found during a preliminary investigation, gathering hours upon hour of information and data during the investigation, then reviewing the evidence ….
How could I put all this together in to one neat, professional looking package to give to the client?
” What If …”  I had Paranormal Software that would…….

Investigator’s Recommendations Case Management
To your client this may be the most important page...
Here is where you would make any recommendation to the property owner or reporting party.
This is where your expertise comes in as you will advise your clients what steps they need to take next.
If it’s non paranormal, discuss your finding and how to solve the problem, if needed suggest do it yourself fix’s or suggest finding a contractor i.e. plumber, electrician, carpenter etc.
In the case your determination is paranormal or haunted by ghost ….it is your duties to try and comfort them and offer suggestions on how to remove the spirit from their location, or who, where and how to may seek additional help.
Your first concern should be to help them to understand what they are dealing with and how to deal with their situation as well as ways to positively re-enforce and regain their control.
All case related information pertaining to real time of the investigation
All case-related information is conveniently and automatically saved and can and reports can be secured from tampering, via the use of optional Password Protection …

*Sorry will not run on MAC’s
But Wait … There’s More, If You Act Now You’ll  Also Receive…
Pure White Noise White Noise is a signal (or process) with a flat frequency spectrum. In other words, normal background noises can be neutralized so that any suspected paranormal voices or sounds will  then have a higher bandwidth and they become the centre frequency.
EVP’s is today one of the most fascinating areas of paranormal research.
Human-sounding voices from unknown origin are recorded on such electronic media as analog tape recorders, digital voice recorders, video recorders and other devices. Strangely, the voices are not heard at the time of the recording; it is only when the recording is played back that the voices are heard.
With the help of the White Noise CD you will be able to hear on your digital recorder the spirits respond, answer questions, even ask questions of their own.
Numerous ghost hunters, paranormal investigators and ghost enthusiasts have used White Noise like this to aid them on their paranormal investigations. This White Noise is a must have for paranormal investigations. The White Noise runs approximately 60 minutes.
This recording contains 100% genuine white noise, the best quality white noise you can get. There are “white noise generators”, which sell for a lot more, that are usually frequency-biased in their attempt to simulate white noise.
60 minutes of frequency-neutral and non-repetitive white noise. Don’t take any chances!
Get the “cleanest” white noise there is. Sound frequency  that contains every frequency from 0 Hz to 22,050 Hz (22.05 kHz) at equal power, with absolutely no distortion or repetitiveness, in stereo. This is as good as white noise gets!
If you want to begin introducing White Noise into your next investigation.
You’ll receive a 60 minute MP3 recording as a bonus, that you can download to your computer, burn to a CD and play it on sight at your next investigation.
Food For Thought, Think About This…
Are you tired of losing pieces of important information gathered before, during and after investigations?
Have you ever waste time trying to find information from a previous investigation?
Have you spent hours compiling a report for your client and think to yourself…There has to be a better way?
Would you like to contact all your team members with one click of a button?
Do you want to look professional ?
Then what are you waiting for?
The PLAN can help solve all these problems and offers so many more benefits in tracking your entire investigation from start to finish.
It will save you hours in allowing you to keep personal profiles on each of your investigators, keeping tabs on your expensive equipment and not to mentions neatly storing all the data including EVP’s and Photos in one complete file for easy and quick access for future reference.
And best of all you give your client a Professional complete report that will only add to your organizations credibility.
Not only that you’ll receive the White Noise CD.
White noise
neutralizes background noise and is believed to assist you so that any suspected paranormal voices can be heard more clearly as it’s frequency is above that of static or normal noise in a given area.
And you also get the ” Ghost Weather Station”   This comes in handy if you need to record the current conditions for your Paranormal Investigation report. So what’s all this worth ?

90 Days of Ableton: Day 2
Having never used Ableton software or any serious DAW before, I embark on a 90 day journey to see how much I can learn - and how much music I can make - before my free trial expires.
Day 2: May 12, 2020.
Whenever I play a repetitive or puzzle-based video game (Tetris is a prime example), or ANY game on a screen for long enough, I start dreaming in those patterns...as if my brain thinks we’re still playing while I’m asleep. [Does this ever happen to you?]
I suspect it has something to do with the way the brain learns and processes information. If I spend four or six or eight hours a day doing anything, my brain decides “this must be really important” and it spends twilight hours crunching on it even more. (Probably same reason why I used to get “math nightmares” when I was stressed out in school.)
Well, I’ve immersed myself enough even in the last few days that my brain has decided Ableton is also dream-worthy material. I had clip and midi patterns running through my head all night.
Tumblr media
Very surreal.
But honestly, I’m getting a kick out of it.
I have a lot of free time right now, because I’m working from home, and I only need to work 2 days per week to finish all my responsibilities.
Last month I participated in Camp NaNoWriMo, because I’m also a writer, and made my 50,000 words handily. But this month I needed a break from writing so I decided to try something new.
I have really wanted to learn how to do this whole music-making thing for years. I’m inspired by so many electronic music artists and producers. I’ve been a musician for years, but there’s only so much I can do as an individual player without collaborating. I didn’t pursue music professionally even though I’ve done it my whole life. (Started at 4, and I turn 30 next year.)
So the appeal of having total independent control, and making entire full tracks, or even albums, of music I liked and wanted to listen to...yeah. GIMME SUMMA DAT.
SO FAR
On Day 1, I made a song (read more about it here). It was pretty basic.
Tumblr media
On Day 2, I knew that I wanted to expand on the song, add another section and wrap it up nicely, do a little bit more with it...but before I did that I spent a few merry hours just f*cking around with the software.
I started new projects, I tried out little melodies, I saved them and opened different projects, I listened to a bunch of samples...I was just waiting for inspiration.
(I also downloaded a bunch of new samples and free packs that were available online. I’ll talk more about that in my post for Day 3.)
I also wanted to start a new project, but I didn’t have a particular direction (just many ideas) so I was feeling aimless. Did I want to do something funky or bossa nova style? Or did I want to take a beloved classical music piece and lofi-ify it? Maybe I could work with an old blues or jazz piece that’s now in public domain.
Eventually, after I collected a bunch of ideas and did a few things that went nowhere, I returned to yesterday’s piece, had another listen, and immediately went into “let’s expand this into something even better” mode.
Click here for a detailed breakdown of what I did differently between Day 1 and Day 2 - including photos of my DAW and a song structure that you can apply to your own composition!
Tumblr media
WHAT I LEARNED
ONE. I really should invest in an actual midi keyboard, even if it’s a budget model. [Update: I did the thing. Midi keyboard ordered. It should arrive ~Day 9 of this experiment.]
TWO. It’s typical that the master mix will be flashing red even if the individual tracks show green. The red is an undesirable thing. Lower individual track volumes to between -8 and -12 and play around with the balance to create a better sound.
THREE. I spent a fair amount of time watching youtube tutorials just to figure out basic things, but a lot of time was spent in hands-on learning. Just clicking around, messing up, ctrl+undo-ing my mistake, and trying again until I figured it out.
FOUR. I used auto filter, auto pan, and gate effects for the first time!
FIVE. The things that I did need help to learn:
what the hell is panning and how to do it
how to double your most important tracks for a filled out sound
how to use gates and envelopes [and I know this iceberg is a big one I’ve only begun to delve into]
SIX. Note that this wasn’t the result of like, an hour or two in Ableton. This was the result of two full working days spent immersed in the program. This was easy to accomplish because I woke up excited to “get to it” and didn’t have many distractions throughout the day so I could afford to get sucked in. Hyperfocus, y’all!
SEVEN. Ultimately, I felt immensely satisfied with the accomplishment I made.
In two days, I made two songs that reflected my 1. initial starting point and 2. immediate short-term progress through learning. I feel quite proud!
And even though I’m sure there’s a lot to nitpick at (and a lot that experienced sound engineers would probably laugh at outright - again, if it’s not clear, I have no idea what I’m doing), I’m not minding that internal critic because I’m a beginner, and all beginners have to start somewhere, and I’m hoping that in 90 days I can look back on this and see how far I’ve come.
CONCLUSION
Basically I made all my decisions by ear.
If it sounded great, I left it alone. Empty, I added to it. Bloated, I removed something. Boring, I changed something.
I took inspiration from Andrew Huang who has mentioned in his youtube videos that he makes fast musical choices and goes with it. It can always be changed later.
I’ve found that this is actually a really productive method for my own flow. It has the casual and relaxed feel of improv, combined with the endless benefit of always being able to replay the song over, listen to it, and change the sound if I decide it doesn’t fit anymore.
Anything I added to the overall piece, even if I didn’t use it or deleted it, ended up informing the overall composition. Things that didn’t work in some instruments were perfect when given to other instruments or when put in a different place in the song. Some elements were recombined with others, or inspired new ideas that I kept.
Most of what I’m focusing on in Ableton right now is based in actual music composition...figuring out how to do what I want with a computer keyboard in lieu of a midi keyboard, actually composing and arranging it, adding and removing sections, figuring out the musical flow and structure.
In terms of music and sound editing, I’m definitely a novice. I have picked up a little bit here and there about what is what (mostly thanks to youtubers like Andrew Huang and the many excellent folks who offer tips & tutorials) but there’s still a lot I can’t wrap my head around.
Even though there’s a little bit I still want to tweak, I’m resisting the urge to do it right now because I think it would be fun to take this Day One/Two mix and re-master it on Day 90, just to see how far I’ve come!

The common party line in the luxury resale market is that authentication is more of an art than a science, something one can only learn through a mixture of experience and intuition. Fashionphile rejects that idea."It's just a science," insists CEO Ben Hemminger. The company puts this into practice by sending every piece that arrives at its Carlsbad, CA campus through a rigorous screening process involving a combination of highly-trained staff and top-of-the-line technology. The whole operation — from the loading dock where employees accept shipments of goods waiting to be authenticated to the brightly-lit room where product gets photographed per precise standards to a locked cage containing hundreds and thousands of luxury pieces — currently exists in the 30,000 square foot building. In the front is a showroom where southern California customers can come drop off their bags to be evaluated on site or pick up a new style they've been eyeing. In the back, there's a large, bright-pink metal ramp, custom-designed by a company that makes playground slides, where freshly-packed boxes zip down to meet delivery trucks. (I ask if I can take a quick ride down it, but apparently that's an OSHA violation, and so I take the stairs.)Photo: Layton Tedrick/Courtesy of FashionphileIt's quite the evolution from Fashionphile's humble beginnings in 1999 as an eBay shop run out of founder Sarah Davis's home, but something she says has been organic from day one. "We've done every single job in the building," Davis says. "There was a point when Ben or I did all of the packing and shipping, photography, authentication, pricing and customer service.""We both love finding out what things are worth — treasure hunt, find it out, sell it for more, that whole arbitrage of used luxury things," Hemminger adds. Initially, Davis was doing this herself, bringing on brother-in-law Hemminger around 2006 when she realized there was an opportunity to grow the business beyond its auction roots. At the time, she exclusively dealt in secondhand Louis Vuitton, having logged hours learning how to authenticate the brand; with Hemminger on board, they aimed to broaden the business, but proceeded very carefully."I figured out authentication on one brand and could handle that by myself," she says. "You don't add the brand before you have the authentication in place. We can't just open a box, go, 'What's this? Oh, let's sell it,' because everything we have is highly counterfeited stuff."Together, they began to familiarize themselves with more designers, starting with Chanel — spending months shopping in stores, buying bags, taking them apart and comparing them with counterfeits until they felt comfortable with the product literally from the inside out. When they were done, they wrote a "guide" to authentication; Davis put together the Louis Vuitton edition and Hemminger worked on the one on Chanel.Photo: Layton Tedrick/Courtesy of FashionphileFashionphile still uses those guides today, as evidenced by the binders collected on the desks of their authenticators packed with laminated pages detailing everything from precise colors and hardware to logos and fonts. And as the brands they accept evolve, taking on new creative directors or aesthetic directions, so, too, do their corresponding guides, which are more living, breathing documents than carved-in-stone laws. Counterfeits are involved in this process, too, as they provide key insight into identifying how fakes are made. When Fashionphile gets an item they deem is counterfeit, they charge the sender a $75 fee ($125 for Hermès Birkins or Kellys) to have it returned to them. Not only has this served to weed out would-be scammers — either people sending in a luxury item for a freebie authentication, something which costs Fashionphile time and money, or counterfeit rings looking to make a score — it has also provided a library of goods for the company to learn from. Inside "The Graveyard" at Fashionphile HQ are dozens of black boxes, each labeled by brand, filled with everything from fake Christian Louboutin shoes to forged Gucci packaging, abandoned by their senders but put to use training Fashionphile employees. While touring the campus, Davis pokes into an office where a handful of employees are gathered around some of Dior's newest styles, examples of counterfeits and a binder detailing what to look for in authentic Dior bags. Training for authenticators is extremely vigorous here: Before an employee can work on their own at Fashionphile, they must undergo 5,200 hours of training in just seven brands; after 6,100 hours, they can work within 21 brands; after 6,460 hours, they can work on 32 or more. It's a process they've dubbed "Fashionphile University."But while the human component remains crucial to Fashionphile's business, they've also added in lots of tech. There's a device that can precisely identify Pantone shades, which is especially useful in authenticating Hermès; equipment that can detect lab-grown diamonds, which can sometimes (but not always!) signal counterfeit jewelry; a machine that can X-ray a bag to reveal the hardware within — another giveaway in particularly well-done fakes. Photo: Layton Tedrick/Courtesy of FashionphileNot satisfied to exclusively rely on appliances readily available in the market, however, Fashionphile is also working on bringing the human element into digital form through in-house innovations. There's software in development which the company says can currently detect counterfeits in three popular classes of bag with 100% accuracy using microframes. There's also a pricing tool which pulls data across key factors (like condition, current inventory, historic shelf life and color) into an algorithm which optimizes pricing, as well as a visualization tool customers can use to get an instant quote on their goods without having to ship it in, which delivers a 95.3% accuracy. This tech also allows Fashionphile to pick up on trends before humans even can. Remember when the Fendi Zucca print came roaring back into fashion? Or when the Dior Saddlebag regained It status? Fashionphile's system registered that those styles were moving faster than normal — so fast, in fact, it couldn't raise the price quickly enough to match the trend. These are all great for customers, of course. But they're also making business faster — and more profitable — for Fashionphile."We've created all these tools to make it so that, as soon as possible, when you walk in our door, you can be fully capable in your position. Our technology is enabling you to get that way faster," Davis says. "There was a time when you came into Fashionphile as a procurement person who was quoting the bags, it took you months to be helpful to us. We've now created tools that make you super-effective within days."Related Articles: Can Technology Keep Fake Handbags Out of the Marketplace? The RealReal's Authentication Practices Are Not What They Seem, According to New Investigation What Goes Around Comes Around Is More Than Ready for the Resale Market Boom"That whole combination of expertise and tech is just really about scaling, because if we were going to stay stagnant and just be a mom and pop, we wouldn't really need it. Our authenticators with no tech can do maybe 20 bags an hour; with these tools, they could probably do 60 an hour," Hemminger adds. "If we're going to be worldwide, and be a $2 billion, $3 billion company, we will probably still have a lot of authenticators, but they would never be able to do that much volume. It [becomes] review versus primary research."It's hard not to be deeply impressed by the level of work and accuracy that goes into this authentication, both on a human and technical level. Their lead jewelry authenticator walks me through two seemingly identical Cartier Juste un Clou bracelets, down to the karat of gold used in the product. The only giveaway? The stamp etched into the fake, which should identify the maker, is slightly different when examined in a jeweler's loupe. Then, I'm told a story about an Hermès Birkin, made by Hermès employees off-the-clock with stolen Hermès leather sold in the black market, identified only when the x-ray revealed that the screws inside the metal feet were wrong. (For me, this all brings about an existential crisis about what, exactly, makes a luxury good so valuable, but that's another story for another day.)Photo: Layton Tedrick/Courtesy of FashionphileIndeed, Davis and Hemminger say that when they have brought luxury companies onto campus to walk them through the authentication process — they can't say who because of NDAs, of course — they've been so impressed that there have been early talks of partnerships. It's just a question of educating these brands, which have been historically unfriendly to the resale market, about the value of consignment, Hemminger explains: "They think we're a problem because of counterfeits. We actually helped them tremendously in showing them how we can help stop counterfeits." "But one of the big benefits that I think some brands are starting to get is that we actually increase sales for brands. No one's buying a new car every two years — that's just the cycle, and you can only do that because you're trading in the old one," he continues. "We think 10 years from now people will just buy more Chanel flaps or whatever, and the new bags will increase in velocity of sales. It doesn't devalue the brand. It just means more people are carrying it."Up until now, the brand's growth has been slow and steady, but with the re-commerce market exploding the way that it has, Hemminger and Davis feel the time is right to ramp up their efforts to lock down the luxury accessory market. They've let the rising tide lift their boat, so to speak, and now they're ready to establish themselves as a primary player in the space."If you Google resellers in our world in 2013, there are a bunch of players that raised money and they're just not here anymore," Davis says. "We've built this really solid foundation — and taking our sweet time doing it, partially to our detriment. We've built this nice little fire; we throw some dry wood and gas on that thing, it's going to go crazy, because it's all solid."Photo: Layton Tedrick/Courtesy of FashionphileRegardless of whether luxury brands get on board, Fashionphile is in expansion mode. In addition to the Carlsbad campus, there's a 100,000 square foot warehouse in the works in New Jersey, all the better to service East Coast customers. There are two standalone Fashionphile showrooms: Carlsbad and New York City. In 2019, the brand took a minority investment from Neiman Marcus and now operates selling studios inside select retail locations — currently, in Dallas, Beverly Hills, San Francisco and Newport Beach, with more to come in 2020 — where customers can get paid on the spot, including the option of a Neiman Marcus gift card. And while Fashionphile is certainly in a good position for cornering the luxury resale market, it's hard to imagine they don't see potential in all the authentication technology they've developed. Davis and Hemminger don't consider mom-and-pop consignment operations as rivals, for example, so they haven't ruled out licensing their apps for a fee. There's talk of making the Hermès color guide available on the site as a resource for customers. Davis even quips at one point that luxury brands should send their employees to Fashionphile University for training. While there are certain things they plan to keep proprietary, they're keeping an open mind for what the future might hold on the tech front."We recognize that there's a cost of sharing the information that we have or the tools that we have — it might help a competitor, or we'll lose a couple of sales," Hemminger admits. "But the other side of it is, by being the authority in the marketplace and being out there with all your information, you become more of a household name, you become recognized for your authority and the brand grows. I think we don't want be too tight-fisted about it because we realize that being generous is a two-way street."

LIMBO | Trailer Re-dubbed - Analysis #4 (Final)
I’ve come to the end of my Limbo trailer assignment and so I’m going to go over everything one last time.
At the start of this assignment, I set out to take Limbo, a game with an already mysterious narrative but one that is quite obscure overall, and transform the theme into one of a clear psychological nature. This required an explicit approach. No subtlety here.
This leads me to my very first ideas of having a narrator. The narrator served the important role of relaying to the audience the theme of the trailer, by delving into the mind of the protagonist, who openly expressed his questioning thoughts about reality and his purpose. This not only captured the essence of the psychological but applied character to a normally silent protagonist. Although my techniques are largely meant to present an explicit tone, I don’t feel at any point I have spoon-fed the audience information as a smaller sense of mystery and obscurity lingers over the trailer.
Besides the non-diegetic narrator. Another aspect of retaining that psychological feeling was the diegetic sounds and making sure they were somewhat grounded in realism but had a little hum of the fantastical. Ambient sounds of animals in nature, or hollow woods, allowed me to teeter on the edges of the real and surreal. This helped me to imagine sounds the insects shown in the trailer would make, especially the spider. I’ll go over this in more detail in my technical section but this again was following on from my idea of grounded realism with a sense of surrealism by creating sounds that I thought a spider would make if it were that large. Without the exaggerated visuals, I believe the sound is enough to convey an extraordinary, large and dangerous beast.
The inclusion of a soundtrack was another decision based on keeping the theme clear. I wanted something that played along with the visuals, ramping up the tension as the trailer did, but not diverting into music you’d find accompanying an action trailer.
How I put this all into practice was another matter because, despite the plethora of equipment and studios available to me, I wanted to set a very personal challenge. I wanted to work under my own limitations. This is something that developers and designers have all experienced, and so it wasn’t just wanting to follow that experience, but it gave me a wonderful avenue for some very surprising experimentation.
The challenge was this; any sounds for the trailer that I was going to produce had to be made within the confines of my bedroom. The limitations to this are quite obvious as I wasn’t going to bring in a slab of my lawn to imitate grass or leaves. My ideas turned to what items in my room could possibly imitate such a sound, so I started to look around for something crunchy. I fell upon a recently empty crisp packet. At first, it didn’t sound all too convincing, but after some alteration to the way I crunched the packet and pitch editing here and there, I got the sound I was looking for. This started the journey from crisp packets and tapping my desk, to using deodorant cans, a dog collar, and my own voice to imitate objects and their sound. Like I said, I wanted to balance realism and surrealism, but also give the world that much-needed physicality, despite the fictional connotations. I won’t explain every last sound as that can be found in my previous posts but I do want to say how satisfied I was with each and every sound I made. I think I’ve nailed the challenge I’ve set myself as each sound matches the intended target in a way that compliments my realism/surrealism approach. I’ve also learned a great deal about experimenting and utilising sound in various ways. The aforementioned crisp packet is a highlight, as it not only supplied the sound to my grassy footsteps but to other sounds such as a wooden box splintering, glass shattering, and sloshy mud thanks to some small edits here and there. Most of the production came from altering the way I used the sounds of the objects in my room and through pitch editing on Sony Vegas. I actually learned a few new little skills on the way I can alter pitch besides the very simple volume and bass of it. Audacity pretty much worked as the gateway rather than an extensive audio editing software, which was down to requiring very minimal editing to capture the sounds I needed.
I am proud of what I’ve accomplished with the limitations I gave myself and believe I’ve proven that you don’t always need top of the line equipment and studios to design good quality audio. Just a spark of creativity.
In conclusion, I am incredibly satisfied with how this assignment has progressed. I’ve achieved my own set targets, and I believe I’ve conveyed a new psychological theme through an explicit narrative and a realistic/surrealistic approach to diegetic audio design. I believe that by working with limitations, I have not only proven that producing good quality audio doesn’t require a good quality set of tools but rather some creativity and experimentation. It's even helped me learn some new techniques in the process.
Finally, here is the definitive version of the trailer.

Reflection on Comics Production
As a MLitt student, taking the Comics Production module was a challenging yet meaningful experience. For starters, I have never learned how to draw nor how to use visual editing tools. I did not take the Creating Comics module in the previous semester nor any course on scriptwriting. In other words, I am just a beginner to the comic scene. Therefore, I was thrilled when the module started.
On the first day of the semester, we were given the task to write our own script entry for a 2000AD competition. I did not expect the first thing I do for this class was to produce a story independently, with no prior sessions on how comic scripts work or how to write a comic story. Upon learning about the project, my classmates started to discuss on their ideas right away while I was still worrying about how to make a story. Taking the direction of science fiction, I began to look for inspiration…
Back in December, I went to Denmark and visited a science fiction exhibition in the Brandts, an art museum in Odense. The exhibition content was richer than I thought, ranging from the themes of dinosaur, earth’s core, under the sea, space, Egypt myth, alien, cyborg, superhero, utopia/dystopia, etc. It showcased re-imagined props, models, landscape designs, books, and movie clips. I found them intriguing and useful for brainstorming and visualizing some early ideas for the comic. The exhibition showed how much potential the science fiction genre can offer to widen the scope of storytelling. I really like the idea of robots are evolving and blending in our lives. It makes me question the difference between humans and machines. I decided to include robotic characters that disguise as humans in the story.

Picture of K/DA Ahri from League of Legends by Riot Games.
I had the idea of modernizing a Chinese folktale, The Painted Skin, as a monster disguises herself as a beautiful woman to lure men and rip their hearts out as her meals to maintain her façade. Similarly, Ahri, a character from my favourite game League of Legends, is a nine-tailed fox from the Asian folklore who also has to absorb human essence in order to stay in her mortal form. In the game’s alternate universe, Ahri is part of a virtual music group “K/DA” made by Riot Games to promote a set of in-game skins. I was hoping to create an intergalactic band like the “K/DA” that travels across the planets to perform, but they are actually robots that have been sucking out the happiness from their audience to become more like humans.
Whenever they perform live, their music would absorb the enthusiasm from the crowd, leaving them depressed and lifeless. However, their music is not strong enough to manipulate strong and deep emotions. As a literature student, I believe that only humans are capable of writing literary pieces that can truly move the others. Therefore, I introduced a poet as the main protagonist who goes around with his poems. One day, a band member took the poet’s collection and decided to turn his poem into a song. In the end, when the band performed it, the song was so genuine and powerful that it drove the audience crazy and killing themselves. This would grant the robots so much “human energy”.
In mid-February, Monty dropped by the studio to give the class some advice on the project. I showed him the synopsis and he pointed out that the protagonist does not really have a motive. He suggested me to write more about the poet and his active investigation into the band. He explained this would allow the readers to attach and follow the poet around to participate in the discovery of the truth together. By the time the secret is revealed, it will have a bigger impact.
However, I could not think of any legitimate reason for a poet to wander around the band to do investigation. And I do not have any poetic verse on my mind to put into the lyrics to show how “powerful” these poems are. Therefore, I realized this character is not suitable for my comic anymore. I changed his character to a detective which I believe it has a more reasonable motive to get suspicious over the band and can carry out some form of investigation.
I amended the synopsis to the following:
“Following a detective who connects the mystery of increasing depression rate to the intergalactic music band Soulstealers, he investigates before the band is going to perform on his planet. During his talk with the band members, he leaves his poetry collection to them as they are interested in it. After a surreal experience at the concert, he is diagnosed with depression as well.
“At the clinic, he is told an ancient folktale of the Painted Skin, where a monstrous creature had to consume human hearts to maintain its disguise as a beautiful woman. He becomes determined that the band is going to threaten the galaxy with their music, but no one believes in him.
“The band releases a new song in the final planet of their tour which results in a mass suicide of the audience. The members are impressed with the effect of the new song as they acknowledged the poetry collection as their inspiration to produce music that can suck out the most human emotions possible. Unzipping their skins in the backstage, they reveal themselves as robots, who are trying to become humans.”
As my plot was becoming a sound story, I began to work on the scriptwriting and drawing thumbnails. I honestly had no idea on how to start writing a script and what a thumbnail is. All I knew about script is the Courier font. I felt helpless – there was no workshops or lessons on planning out a story or putting pen to paper. In a desperate move, I decided I would try to learn them by myself. I went to the library to look for books on writing comic scripts. I found a book by Peter David called Writing for Comics & Graphic Novels which I thought would be perfect to helping me out!
In the book, I have learned about the Marvel style and the full script style. I have learnt that the speech balloons are mostly kept “anchored” (148). When naming the characters, the book suggests linking up words associated to the characters, to find some cultural references related to these traits and to create some social scenarios to build up their personalities (on how they would react). I named the two of the band members Maria and HALi, which are references to Maria the robot from Metropolis (1927) and the HAL the computer from 2001: A Space Odyssey (1968).
Following the guidelines, I wrote the first page for my comic and doodled some thumbnails alongside with dialogues, so I could pair them with the right amount of words in each panel:

In mid-March, the class had a meeting at the studio where we got the chance to let our instructor, Phil, to check on our works. Besides approving my story, Phil commented that the formatting of my script was not very common as I named each panel by alphabetical order like the book did. Therefore, I updated the script in the correct format and started to draw the thumbnails properly. With the rundown of the story in mind, I drew the thumbnails, then updated my script on top of that. In this way, I could make sure each panel can include the right amount of information.
When visualizing the idea, I took inspiration from a newly-released Netflix sci-fi anthology – Love, Death + Robots. In one of the episodes, Good Hunting, it involves a nine-tailed fox/ “huli jing” (wicked fox lady in Chinese). The setting is in a steampunk colonial Hong Kong, which is my hometown. In the end, the fox lady infused her ancient magic with modern technology and became a robotic nine-tailed fox to hunt men. This is a perfect source for my story as it also references to the fox folktale and having charming performers revealing themselves as robots. I just thought the episode is stunning and amazing and see so much potential in my story as well.

My classmate, Thanos, told me he would scan his hand-drawn thumbnails and edit them on Photoshop. I do not know how to edit drawn images on Photoshop. Therefore, I used the Comic Life 3 software that my professor has recommended me, to make my own framing for the panels. I printed the frames out, and drew on top of it by hand, then scanned them in again to become my final thumbnails. I have also shown my thumbnails to the MDes students, to see if they could understand my instruction through an artist’s perspective. Tony gave me some suggestions on the speech balloon placements and reading orders.
After updating the script, I have sent my work to my fellow MLitt students in the course, so we could cross-check each other’s work and exchange feedback. One of the advices from Thanos was to add a defining font for the band in the comic so to act as a branding and leaving visual hints of their robotic natures. Story-wise, they told me to add more clues, foreshadowing and explanation that the band has to consume human emotions gathered from their live performances. In terms of writing, Holly suggested me to proofread on my grammar as I sometimes describe the scene with present tense but sometimes with past tense.
After receiving feedback from my classmates, I moved on to finalizing my script. I ran through my work to Cam Kennedy when he dropped by the studio. I was so glad and relieved when he said that my story was well-presented. Encouraged by his words, I referenced the formats of my classmates and did one last amendment to the script and added the synopsis in the cover.
Looking back on the project, I am quite satisfied with what I wrote, given that this is my first time writing a comic script. When writing for each panel, I just knew how much contents to include. I realized that this could be a difficult step as my fellow classmate Holly had to cut down some exposition. I think this might be something that I am good at and should focus on improving this skill as my strength. On the other hand, character design, formatting and grammar are something that I should pay more attention to. I am grateful for Monty’s advice about the character’s motive and Holly’s help on proofreading the grammar of my writing. I wish I could have spent more time researching for comic scripts in the archive so to catch up with the script formats.
The second project in the module began as we were invited to the V&A Dundee during the second week of the semester. The class visited the V&A exhibition together and I felt like we were on a field trip which was very fun. Until we were told to make our own webcomic for the V&A website, in which they did not provide any “MLitt exception” like the scriptwriting option for the 2000AD project. I was devastated and felt helpless once again. I suggested to write an article by interviewing my class when they are producing their webcomics. Chris then suggested: “how about you make a comic on making the comics!” Phil also suggested that I can incorporate real life photos with the comics by visual editing tools. I began to ask my MDes classmates if they would be willing to help me to do some extra drawings and interviews.
A week later, the V&A Dundee staff came to listen to our ideas. My idea was to interview my classmates on making their webcomics at different stages of the project. When I told them my plan, it sounded very vague because I did not have any visual support to visualize the comic. Phil told me about a software called Comic Life which provides templates and visual aids for making a comic. The V&A staff reminded me to make the contents accessible to everyone – by explaining the context of the project and using easier phrases instead of comic jargons. After that, I tried out the programme and made the decision of making four issues of comics consisting of four panels each.
In order to give a sense of what it would look like, I mocked up two issues for the presentation. I edited my personal photos and placed them on some photos I have taken at the V&A and the DJCAD studio as the background. I wanted the photos to look like they were “drawn” so I processed them with different filters. Here are some slides I have presented:
Tumblr media Tumblr media
After getting the approval and some advice for the presentation, I began to have small talks with my classmates and checking on them in the studio. I tried to take notes of who has material that is suitable for each of the issues, hence allocating them in different issues and reaching out to ask them for one piece of cartoon-style portrait of themselves. I was a bit worried if they would reject me since this means taking some of their extra time to draw and interview for me. Luckily, they were all on board and excited to see the idea comes to life.
I dropped by the studio for a week after the class is done with the 2000AD project so I could interview my classmates and took photos of their working areas. One of the difficulties for me was paraphrasing my classmates’ answers as I did not want to fill the whole panel with words without stripping away the gist of their words. I was worried about not following the unspoken rule of keeping each bubble under 25 words. However, I realized that the nature of this comic is more like a comic essay, so it makes sense to have more words.
The rest of my work was rather simple: I just had to wait for my classmates to submit their drawings to me, process their works and edited them to match the composition of each panel. I decided to unify the colour format of the comic to orange and blue which was inspired by the V&A Dundee website’s colour scheme.
Tumblr media
When the V&A staff came by the studio for a final checking, they told me to amend the branding by using the full title of “V&A Dundee.” Phil asked me to adjust the speech bubbles so the words would not get so close to the edges. I tried to change the shape of the bubbles from circles to squares and changed the font from “Antihero Intl BB” to “Digital Strip.” By doing so, the gaps in the bubbles were widen while not covering up too much space of the overall panels. However, during the final presentation, Phil reminded me that this issue was still very visible and told me to use Photoshop to edit the lettering properly. Rayne kindly took me to the library and showed me how to do the work as I worried that it would “squeeze” the words as I resize them. Apparently, if I hold “shift,” I could adjust the size of the words in proportion which was a very helpful tip!
While working on this project, I really tried to capture all the important bits of the process and show the readers what it is like to make a comic. I wanted to do justice for all my classmates who helped me – to let them show their efforts and brilliant ideas behind each panel and to keep my webcomic as a record for the class to remember. Collaborating with the V&A Dundee was a really big deal and would look great on my resume so I wanted to give all I can offer to this project. There were many first-times in this project and seeing my comic coming together as a whole really surprised me for how far I have come. I have learned the spirit of “never say no” and be brave to give everything a try – luckily, my classmates were kind and patient to teach me through my mistakes and instructors gave me some helpful advice along the way.
The third project is the logo design which marks my first time of using Illustrator. I did not plan to make my own brand, so I did not have anything on my mind for a logo. The only thing I had been working on for this module was the blog so I decided to make a logo for the blog – Man Man Loi. It is a Romanized English for the Cantonese words 漫慢來 with the literal meaning for each word being “comic,” “slow,” and “come” respectively. I named my blog this way to symbolize my journey through this module – taking small steps in learning new skills and progress as a comic student. The phrase can mean “take it slow” in English. I believe in the attitude of “patient work makes a fine product” which comes from a Chinese idiom. If I ever take this brand to my work in the future, I would like it to represent my attitude in working as an editor with this belief.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Since the phrase is related to “taking steps,” I wanted to use stairs as the shape of the logo which symbolizes stepping upwards to the goal. Since reading English text is from top left towards the right hand side, the original line up of the words would read in a descending manner which did not match the concept of stepping up. Therefore, I changed the starting point of the words from the bottom left. There were also scrapped designs of a stick figure walking up the stairs or the dot of the “i” bouncing upwards. However, they looked ridiculous with my ammeter Illustrator skills and did not really help to signal the motion of going upwards. Therefore, I decided to keep it simple and only showed the English and Chinese words on a pink staircase. For the Chinese words, I struggled between placing the words on the stairs or on one side vertically so I asked my friends and they all prefer the latter one.
All in all, I cannot believe that I have made it through this module. Every task was a new challenge that sounded so impossible for me in the first place. Everything was very over-whelming for me and I had a tough time adapting to them. I remember something Phil told the MLitt students in the beginning: “Don’t let your limitation limits you.” These words pushed me forward to accept these challenges and I have come to realize that my limitations opened new ideas for me as well. For example, if it was not for the “no MLitt exception” in the V&A Dundee project, I would not have thought of making a comic about making comics! These experiences encouraged me to try new things and not be afraid to ask for help. I kept asking my classmates along the way and they were all very nice: doing an extra drawing for me, spending time to do an interview, teaching me on how to use different programs, reviewing my works etc. I have realized that my classmates are my biggest assets and I am forever grateful for that.

Weekend Rant: My FIOO X5II
I post a blurb a day here, Monday through Friday, but from time to time I might post something music-related but not song-specific on a Saturday or Sunday. The occasion for this one: my love for my new mp3 player.
Maybe it’s odd that a guy who spent ten years helping build and evolve Rhapsody, and then the next four doing the same for Google Play, even has an mp3 player. My Android + the music streaming subscription service of my choice should serve all my needs, especially since Google Play lets me store 50,000 of my own songs on their servers, and mix and match them with everything else in their catalog.
But my phone’s battery is a precious resource I must conserve, and I spend too much time flying or driving long distances with no internet connection. And I prefer having access to my entire music collection at those times, rather than whatever subset of it I remembered to save for offline listening before the trip began.
For years, that meant carrying a 160GB iPod classic with me wherever I went. But Apple discontinued that a while back, and even before they did my collection had exceeded its capacity (roughly 31,000 songs), which meant that every new record I added to it required deleting an old one. And that caused me physical and emotional distress, every time.
So when my iPod started showing signs it was on the verge of failing for good, I began hunting around for a replacement. Which led me to my new favorite possession, the Fiio X5 2nd gen pictured above.
Fiio’s a Chinese company that makes, among other things, surprisingly affordable, audiophile-quality digital audio players. That means all the elements inside the player have been selected and engineered to appeal to people with picky tastes and expensive headphones and lossless audio files who like to fiddle endlessly with EQ settings.
While I own and appreciate well-designed amplifiers and speakers, I’m not really an audiophile. I can reliably tell the difference between a WAV file and a 192kbps mp3 of the same song, but bump that mp3 up to 320kbps and I can’t tell you which one’s which anymore. I believe there are people who can notice the difference (Neil Young is most definitely one of them), but I’m also pretty sure they’re less than 5% of the population, and I am not among them.
So the X5ii’s real appeal to me is its storage capacity: rather than the outdated hard drive of my old iPod, this Fiio holds two micro sd cards of whatever capacity you choose -- both of mine are 200GB at the moment, meaning this thing already holds more than twice what that iPod did, but as technology advances and 512GB cards become more affordable, I can expand it further, if and when I need to. So, while I don’t personally need my entire collection in any of the lossless formats Fiio supports, I do plan on upgrading all of those 120 and 192kbps mp3s I ripped or acquired in the aughts.
The X5ii has a similar form factor to an iPod, including a scroll wheel, but because Fiio is a small company the bulk of their resources are apparently focused on the hardware, not the software, leaving a few trade-offs for iPod users to get accustomed to. Most significantly, since the X5ii doesn’t come with any media management software, you have to update the device manually -- that means dragging and dropping any new songs directly onto the device via your computer, and that means taking some time, if you haven’t already, to organize your collection in a logical folder structure so what’s on your device can be compared at a glance to what’s on your computer, and swapped back and forth most easily.
Once you’ve got the music you want on the device, you’ll find that navigating within your collection takes longer compared to an iPod, and the UI feels like it was designed by nerds for other nerds, rather than by nerds for their parents. If, like me, you have thousands of artists in your collection, and feel like playing a specific album by someone in the middle of the alphabet (as pictured above), it’s going to take you a minute or more of spinning that wheel before the music’s playing. I do the bulk of my listening by putting my entire collection, or some large subset of it, on shuffle play, so I don’t really mind the lag.
(Addendum, 3/12/17: I started minding the lag, a lot. My breaking point came last month, on a flight, while trying to write up “Waterloo Sunset.” It took me so goddamn long to navigate to the track I wound up timing it: one minute and thirty-four seconds. That felt unacceptable, so I came up with a better solution: I re-arranged my filing system so that there’s a separate folder for each letter of the alphabet on simcard #1, and artists are filed in the appropriate folder like they might be in a record store (except, since it’s a digital age, Bruce Springsteen goes in B, not S, etc.). This change improved the navigation experience dramatically: I can now have “Waterloo Sunset” playing twenty-three seconds after wishing it, or more than four times faster than before.)
There’s only one thing I consider a serious degradation of my old iPod experience: my X5ii hates external playlists. Just getting one onto the device is probably too daunting for the average consumer: you have to export the playlist from your media manager, open it in Notepad, and do a universal find-and-replace operation so that all the paths to your tracks on your computer (ie: C:/Users/Tim/Music/Magnetic Fields/Love at the Bottom of the Sea) get switched over to the paths on your device (ie: TF1:/Magnetic Fields/Love at the Bottom of the Sea). (Or, as of 3/21: TF1:/M/Magnetic Fields/Love at the Bottom of the Sea.)
That I could handle easily enough. Unfortunately, it turns out that even though the X5ii can hold tens of thousands of songs, it can’t handle a playlist with more than ~3,000 tracks at a time. Attempting to play one uses up too much RAM, and the device freezes. That was a major bummer, since the playlists I rely on most are anywhere from ~5,000 songs (“4 and 5 Star Soul”) to ~24,000 songs (“4 and 5 Star Everything”).
I tried to deal with this by splitting up my massive playlists into smaller ones, and rotating through them. But that was unsatisfying, because it meant one of the eight “4 and 5 Star Everything” playlists was all songs that started with H, so I wound up hearing a bunch of songs about hearts in a row. Note to all musicians (including myself): you can stop writing songs about hearts, and how they break, and how to heal them. It’s been done.
There was one other solution, which I was hesitant to try, and even more hesitant to admit to actually going through with, because it’s kind of insane. But it’s also why I’m posting about this on 5 Star Songs, as will become clear in a moment.
For reasons I don’t quite understand, my X5ii can easily handle a playlist with tens of thousands of tracks if it’s made directly on the device. So, I could replicate my “4 and 5 Star Everything” playlist by clicking the device’s “favorite” icon 24,760 times (doing so actually required 74,280 clicks, because you have to click once to reveal the icon, click a second time to select it, and then click a third time to move on to the next song you want to flag).
This seemed nuts. But, if it’s not already obvious, I really like my music, and I’m really particular about how I listen to it. And I loved everything else about my X5ii. If I could just favorite those 24,760 songs I already knew I liked best, keeping that Favorites playlist updated as I added new music would be much simpler than constantly exporting, editing and saving Notepad files.
So, um, I did it. Took me a week -- turns out it’s something you can do each evening while binge watching Horace and Pete. And though I’m a little embarrassed about it (and my wife is completely bewildered by my compulsion), I’m quite glad I did. For one thing, I now have the perfect portable device, capable of powering the highest quality headphones while carrying the sum total of all music I’ve collected over the past forty-odd years.
For another, it made me commune with that collection in a manner that turns out to be much more immersive and satisfying than scanning the spines of LPs or CDs stored on shelves. Over the course of a week, I stared at every album cover briefly, and made note of each song title, learning things I’d never realized along the way (for instance: Mavis Staples covered one of my favorite George Soule songs; also: the list of things bands have written odes to waiting for or on (A Friend, The Guns, Superman) is pretty funny when considered in a row).
So, that’s why the header at the top of this Tumblr recently switched from saying, “My iPod has 31,302 songs…” to “My mp3 player has 36,374 songs...” The number, which had stalled for years as I had to banish songs that had commited no crime beyond earning a mere 3 stars, can now start growing again. And that makes me so happy, I don’t mind it took me clicking buttons almost 75,000 times. I will always be an obsessive idiot when it comes to music.
There are far worse ways to muddle through life.

My First Round of Agency Submissions Has Ended in Failure (But I Won't Give Up)
As someone who has always known rejection, it wasn’t anything new. However, with my quest to find theatrical, commercial and commercial print representation here in Los Angeles, I can’t say I wasn’t somewhat disappointed. I sent out over 40 emails followed up by additional forward emails. After all was said and done, I had struck out over 80 times over the course of 2 weeks.
When I tell you my motivation and self-confidence took a hit, it was like being ran over by a truck. This massive amount of failure in such little time had spilled over into my personal life: missed auditions, trying to stay tucked away from all life, and just dive into content creation. Because if I create my own content, and projects, that’ll show all them right?
That’s what I thought, but recently I remembered something my dad would always say while I was growing up: Failure is the First Attempt In Learning. When I came to terms with my dad’s lessons, I called him up and thanked him. Then we had a 2 hour conversation on the phone.
I had struck out over 80 times over the course of 2 weeks.
So, if it was the first attempt, what did I learn? I learned several things from taking my job seriously, caring about my appearance, getting past self-confidence issues that started in high school, internal motivation vs external motivation and a lesson on integrity.
Self-Confidence (Getting Out of My Own Way)
I’m someone who has had difficulties in my life. I was heavily bullied in high school, which has caused lasting effects in my life. The town that I grew up in had an extremely active KKK sect in the 1920’s and 1930’s. Not to give a history lesson, but as we are coming up on a decade of activity, and some of the grandparents are still alive that were in the group had passed down those feelings down to their descendants. Some of these people that have that sort of mindset nowadays have stayed in their city, never venturing out too far from their comfortable zone.
Since I was different, I felt the need to work harder than even the hardest worker in the room, talk about the goals that I have in life, and made a point to be friendly with everybody. That didn’t go so well. I felt that I had no one to talk to; parents, teachers, and peers were against me. At one point, I was so depressed, that my school put me into counseling. Rejections from women I liked, and negative re-enforcement were the norm for every day of my high school life. I even had one woman say that dating me would “ruin their reputation.”
That was about 10 years ago. Now: I have a degree in Fitness & Sports Management, I played college football, I joined the great Iota Phi Theta Fraternity, Inc., traveled to multiple cities (even New York City where I lived for a time), moved to LA and I’ve become an actor. I’ve also had one girlfriend, but who’s keeping track?
With new experiences once I’ve left my hometown, my self-confidence soared. I was still the hardest worker in the room, but now I was also extremely talkative, and laughing, whereas before, I was moody, and serious.
To sum everything up, I had gotten out of my own way, and had to remind myself that every now and then, especially with my previous stint with homelessness. With the rejections from the managers, all those negative feelings came back to the surface.
Now, I feel the need to say that they didn’t directly cause it, but I subconsciously attached them to the high school bullies. Which is extremely unfortunate, and I feel bad for. But because of my recent self-reflection, and epiphanies, I realize that I may not be a good fit for them for various reasons. Which brings me to…
Caring About My Appearance
It goes without saying that the entertainment industry cares about appearances. These are people who will be portraying heroic, and villainous characters, with some of them even being gods, and getting paid the big bucks for it. If you’d like to know the average amount that people get paid on syndicated TV shows, not including negotiations, and everything else, that number comes out to be about $20,000 a week. That is literally life-changing money right there.
But, in order to make money like that, they give it to those that look the part. Go into an audition, kill the audition, and the callbacks, get booked, and the show gets ordered for a season (or two, or 9 like Wild ‘n Out). When you look at the lead characters and even some of the supporting characters on shows, they look like they’re born with great genetics, chiseled features, and can never do wrong, unless the plot dictates it so.
We know real life is different. At my heaviest, I was 310 pounds, and even when I was homeless, I didn’t care much for going to the gym, because I was so unmotivated to do anything else but survive. I put on a good 30 pounds when I was living in my car last year. Buffets, fast food, and water were the norm. But now, things are different.
I have an apartment now, I don’t work at my physically exhausting and extremely strenuous day job anymore, and most importantly, I’ve lost weight. On April 15th, 2019 I weighed 301.2 pounds. Now, I’m at 281 pounds. I was tired of my belly protruding through my shirt so much, and I was tired of always being tired.
I now practice portion control, I limit fast food intake to less than 1 meal a week, and I don’t buy so much food. In an effort to help my cooking, and keep my food bill low, I’ve started buying ramen (yes, that college ramen we’re so used to), but I always use spices and fresh ingredients congruently with it. Heck, I just buy the regular, no meat or veggie flavor ramen so that I can use the most ingredients. But I rarely eat them, and will eat them if I’m not in the mood to cook, or need a quick meal to eat.
I train at my local 24 hour fitness 5 times a week, and do active recovery on my rest days. When I do cardio, I kick the treadmill into a -30% decline, and the speed to about 4.5. Right near the end of the cardio session, I burn myself out by turning the treadmill to a 70% incline, and increasing the speed to 6.5. By the end, I’m sprinting on the treadmill, with sweat flying all over with a satisfying gulp of fresh air afterwards and a heaping scoop of whey.
I’m sleeping a lot more, eating a lot less, and learn as much as I can about looking and feeling good every day. I care about myself, and who I am when I walk out the front door every morning. It’s a nice change of pace. All of this has come from me comparing…
Internal Motivation vs. External Motivation
I have so much positive re-enforcement nowadays it’s scary. I’ve got so many people saying great things about me, and I’m getting compliments from girls and guys alike almost every day. I’ve had an acting buddy of mine tell me that she’s impressed with my persistence, and another tell me that I have the most untapped potential out of anybody that she’s ever known. Quite big shows to fill. But I never truly believed myself to be the person they were talking about. After all, I was someone with self-esteem issues, and felt I was broken. But their compliments motivated me to continue moving forward.
Tyrhee, for instance has always told me about creating my own content again. Shooting, editing, posting and all that. But for the longest, I felt that I was inadequate and couldn’t bring myself to the level that he’s currently at. Although I had reservations, I started writing content again. It was difficult because that creative muscle hadn’t been used for so long. Plus, who was going to shoot my content? I was a person with only 4,600 Instagram followers. But Tyrhee assured me that it’d be okay. One of the reasons he gave was that I had shot so many flames for him and others that they had said “when you shoot, let me know, and I’ll be in it.” I didn’t believe them, until I shot my first piece of content about a month ago.
People held the camera for me, and I was able to direct them on how to shoot, on top of Tyrhee being in it, and also helping me punch up the script. It was a great experience, and the one experience I truly needed to realize that I’m no longer alone in my quest to work my way up the entertainment ladder. I had a new support system here in LA that wasn’t based on familial ties.
Working my way through my issues, shooting, writing, and producing my own content, plus not liking who I saw in the camera or in the mirror caused the external motivation of others to eventually become my own internal motivation. I started working out hard, caring about my appearance, my brand, and not wanting to be a weak link.
I’m waking up early these days, make sure to get a training session in (yesterday, I reduced my 2 hour workout to 30 minutes with 10 minutes of cardio and ab twists and kicked up the intensity to near limit-pushing levels), work as much as I can, and submit to casting notices. I gotta look like someone who will get booked, if I want these agents and managers to take me seriously. Thankfully, this has started teaching me about…
Integrity
I’m always trying to do my best, but because of so many things going on, stuff falls through the cracks. Missed auditions, missed bookings (even though they’re just background roles), and stuff life throws at you.
Recently, I shot a radio show for a working acting friend of mine. Everything was great during the show. Afterwards though, it was all excuses for why I didn’t have it edited. That weekend was an extremely heavy shooting weekend for Tyrhee and I, where we knocked out about 15 sketches after everything was said and done. I forgot all about the radio show, but then I started getting it done Monday night. Then came the very annoying situation of the editing software I had not being able to bulk-render videos, since the guy told me break it up into segments. Then I lost my prized Duo-Link, which is still a critical step in my workflow, and making sure people can get their footage. I said that I would get it to him Monday, and by the time he had the files, it was Thursday. Not a great look if I do say so myself.
If I couldn’t stay on top of stuff like that, would that transfer over to my acting? I’m inclined to say yes. I wouldn’t sign me either with that old mindset, with an emphasis on procrastination.
My friend with the radio show told me that he does what he says. With everything that’s going on in his life that he tells me about, from his projects to his radio show to his content creation, I’ve never once thought that his integrity is an issue. He had so much motivation to push forward that he puts my own integrity to shame. But he and I had a deep conversation about that, where I had asked him about it. When people say that actors don’t help each other, that’s a big fat lie.
The talk we had flipped a switch in my head about everything that I was doing wrong. I was overextending myself, and trying to do everything but nothing at the same time. For the first time, I had realized that I was forcibly holding myself back from the potential that the person say they saw in me. That night, I gave him updated files and he had the full set of his radio show in his hands, edited and ready to be posted.
It’s still a challenge, but I’m giving myself realistic deadlines now and if it’s ever too much, I’ll let people know, and I’ll also say no if I don’t want to do something. This all boils down to the most important thing…
Taking My Job Very Seriously
To be an actor is to shoulder extreme rejection, and going through emotional highs and extreme emotional lows - including depression. But, it’s the path that I felt like was naturally chosen for me.
The A-Listers of my industry got to where they are because they care about their craft. They care about entertaining millions, and some even give back by creating acting schools, or charity. They care about the betterment of the world through entertainment. They’ve interalized their lines, and do extensive workout programs to keep themselves in icon shape.
A great person that displays these qualities is Dwayne Johnson. He admitted to depression and confidence issues, but continually strives to be his best self. Another person is my friend Tyrhee Spivey. He recently had that switch flipped, and has been pushing himself so incredibly hard it’s impressive.
Closing Thoughts
I’ve learned these lessons at the time when I started looking for representation. They weren’t easy or comfortable to learn by any means, and I was pretty frustrated when everything was going down. But, after a month of concentrated effort, and a newfound willingness to make mistakes, I know my second round of agency submissions are going to be better.

In 2017, what is the best video editing program?
I have been editing video since I can remember, starting in middle school on tape decks, moving to a black MacBook and iMovie circa 2005. As what I wanted to do with video grew, so did my needs in a video editing program.
When I started film school 8 years ago, Final Cut Pro 7 was in vogue and I learned it. It had its quirks, but at the time it was the best editing software by far.
That was until apple released Final Cut X in 2011 to a rabid user base that basically wanted to crucify them for messing with their precious Final Cut. Most of these users just wanted updated features, pretty much just A Final Cut 8. Apple decided to gut the program and rewrite every line of code, to better prepare it for the future of editing.
In use, it was buggy and was missing many key features that editors needed. Features like XML import and export, server support, multicam editing, chapter markers, and broadcast monitor support. Final Cut X was branded iMovie pro and most Final Cut 7 users left to other video editing software.
At the time there were only 2 viable alternatives to Final Cut, Avid Media Composer and Adobe Premiere Pro. Avid was poised to take over Film and Television editing and Premiere pretty much took everyone else.
I made the choice to become a Premiere user. Premiere has great after effects integration, and was able to edit any type of footage from its native file type. At the time, most video editing software needed to be transcoded/converted to its preferred video file type to be edited. Final Cut had Prores and Avid had DNXHD. With premiere you didn’t have to waste time converting anything, you could edit right away, saving hours or days of post production time.
I still never liked premiere. It always ran like crap on every Mac I installed it on, no matter how powerful the machine. Premiere was originally a PC program, and was never truly optimized to run on Macs. This led many editors to switch to PC’s to recapture some of the speed and reliability they longed for.
My original professional background was in IT and data recovery, basically I fixed PC’s. PC’s are cheap garbage, no matter what brand you buy. There just isn’t a PC brand that can match the build quality that Apple has, I really wish their was. Even if there was, Windows is just crap. I have never had a PC running windows last more than 3 months of my use without crashing, but every Mac I have owned has lasted and lasted. My mother still uses my 2005 black MacBook to this day, good luck using a 12 year old PC.
I won’t go back to PC, I know the flaws in their software and hardware and just won’t put myself through hours of waiting on geek squad service.
So for the last 5 years, I have been running premiere. Dealing with crashes, corrupted project files, green frames in my footage, and general sluggishness on my Mac.
I tried Avid, but my opinion is that Avid is for video editors that only edit video. What I mean is that Avid is for editors who work as part of a larger team with someone to do the sound, someone to do the color and someone to do the titles. Basically you need another program/person to do anything else besides edit video. This is fine is some work environments, and can be the optimized way of working for many editors. I know Avid has built in tools, but for the most part they are not very good or they are dated.
I personally usually work alone because of tight budgets. I cannot afford to hire anyone else, and I need to efficiently do all the work required of me. If premiere wasn’t such a badly coded piece of software, it would be perfect for this. Adobe comes with sound, graphics, and color software allowing you to do everything you need.
Once Davinci Resolve’s editing panel because more fleshed out, I tried that out. It was okay, and will probably work great for many editors. I ultimately didn’t use it because it’s audio editing options were very limited. I need to use EQ, compression, low and high cut filters, and noise reduction to provide clean professional audio for my clients. Resolve just didn’t cut it.
Then late last year, I had a client who needed their projects edited in Final Cut X. I decided to give it a whirl and began my journey to relearn Final Cut. I had kept in touch with final cut since I left it, always checking in to see how it was doing but never staying.
I was pleasantly surprised! All the features that were missing, were now back. They had also added countless other amazing features that can save you hours as an editor.
Then Apple shocked the editing community by releasing 10.3. I feel this made Final Cut X the best editing software available to date, on any platform.
It is fast, blazingly fast on any modern Mac. You don’t need anything beefed up, apple has programmed the shit out of this and Final Cut X as a software is leaps and bounds more advanced than anything else available. This means native editing of video at any resolution, and instead of having to step down your resolution to ¼ or 1/16 for Red video like Premiere, Final Cut X will automatically adjust video quality to optimize your computers performance. This means more focusing on editing and less on your machine. Basically more time to be creative.
Roles are better than tracks! Tracks now feel like stepping back into 1983 for me, they are extremely outdated at this point. Roles are the future and move with you, allowing you to have greater control of your media and timeline. Roles also optimize the space on your screen, giving you more room, while also allowing you to see what’s in your timeline more easily.
I love how Final Cut X switches between the timeline and viewer automatically, allowing me to have more room on my screen to see my media, instead of sharing the screen space with a two up display like the traditional editing interface. You can choose to have the traditional editing layout, but why would you when Final Cut works to great.
Proxies made easy. Premiere pro sucks for proxies, even when using their built in proxy tools. Thinks get unlinked and you need to spend valuable time troubleshooting link problems.
Try making proxies for Red on premiere and then going back to the original r3d, good luck. They might have added a new feature recently, but it’s probably buggy anyway. Premiere focuses too much on new features to satisfy their user base paying high monthly fees for their software. Apple always focuses on reliability before anything.
Need proxies with Final cut X? You just check a box and bam you have optimized proxies for your machine. Need to go back to the original footage for your final render? Just check another back, super easy and reliable.
Final Cut X has great audio tools, many of them are straight out of Apple’s professional sound editing and mixing software Logic. You can even save presets in Logic to use in Apple, making Final Cut’s build in audio editing and mixing tools very powerful. I personally find these tools to be leaps and bounds better technically and creatively then anything found in other editing software.
Final Cut X has amazing Motion graphic tools, and integrate with Apple Motion to provide even greater control of graphics. You can even install plugin’s that allow you to have easily customizable motion titles, something much more difficult to with with After Effects. These motion titles update in real time, allowing you to make better creative decisions.
Because of the nature of my work, I often still need to edit in Resolve, Premiere or Avid. Every time it feels like I’m stepping back to the past. Final Cut had to take a major step back then re-coded everything from the ground up. Just like the first iPhone, it was embarrassing and did not have many needed features. Apple is the best at not giving up and following through with their vision, and that has really paid off with Final Cut 10.3. Not just that, it’s always the cheapest available professional editing solution by far because Apple makes their money from hardware and can subsidize the software.
If you have a Mac and are editing your video on something else, it’s time for you to take another look at Final Cut before you are left behind. The future of editing is happening right now.
