I have not watched All Quiet On The Western Front (2022) and I honestly don't plan to change that any time soon but from what I know about the movie I am fairly certain in 1 thing: this movie is an absolutely horrible adaptation that completely misses the point of the novel to the point that it shouldn't even share its name and be its own original movie instead

The novel, while obviously also showing the horrors of combat, does not fully focus on that but instead also shows all the other horrors that come as byproducts of a war like rats, seeing your friends die and dealing with close to no food

It shows how soldiers had to and were ready to do anything to survive and how they were never safe even if not in active combat

It also really shows how a lot of the young soldiers stopped feeling at home in normal society and would have had real trouble to reintegeate into society after the war

But it also shows how they at least temporariy succeeded in finding happiness in the little things even in war

It focusses on the contrast of how horrible the war actually was for the soldiers versus how glorified it was perceived by most of society even to the point of people not believing the main character when he tries to talk about it with the people back home

The title itself references how little an individual soldiers life is nothing to the big picture of war as the newspapers just report "all quiet on the western front" on the day the main character dies in combat

The movie by contast seems like just your run of the mil war movie like many before it and many after it

For some reason they change the main character to be 17 so he has to forge his fathers signature to be able to enlist which is just a random change I genuinely don't get (I mean I guess it reinforces how the young people actually wanted to go to war because of what they were told but like idk)

The movie omits the main character going home and thus cuts out a lot of the comparison of war with life back home it instead adds a parallel plotline of peace negotiations which ya know is also an interesting aspect but does not fit the novel at all as the novel purely focusses on the life of the common soldier instead of the bigger political picture

The movie also seems to focus way way more on just the combat which again is not the point of the movie and has also been done time and time again

The worst thing imo is how/that they changed the ending tho

They literally fucked up the whole meaning of the title by having the main character die in a final big combat the hour of the armistice that ended the war giving the day of his death and his death itself way more relevance for the big picture of politics than it should have (they tried to somewhat rectify this I guess by having his death not be recorded but cmon)

Just to be completely clear here: I am not calling it a bad movie (as I said I haven't even seen it so I literally can't judge if it is a good movie or not and I think that is all personal opinion anyways) but even without watching it I am almost certain that the movie is not a good adaptation and probably shouldn't have been an adaptation at all

i HATE it when people solely laugh react my art and/or writing that is not intended to be funny.

it is an awful feeling to have spent hours and hours on a piece and then to just have a bunch of people laugh at your post and nothing else?

when sharing stuff on discord i used to like putting silly captions, bc i do genuinely like making people laugh, and because there's some safety in couching sincere passion in humor. but i realized i have to cut back on doing so because it colors people's perception of the work.

because it is much easier to click a react that's already there than to add a new one, if the first person to react thinks it's funny and that's it, then well, maybe that's all you're gonna get!

it's different on discord vs on more public places. i don't (can't) have any expectations on engagement out here. it just feels a little worse if these are people you sort of know.

i create all art for myself, i can't care about what other people think (especially as a passionate fan of very unknown things, i count likes and kudos on one hand). but i still enjoy sharing the things i care about and it still feels bad to have people laugh at genuine thought and effort! why would i ever want to share something ever again!
