A guide to the 02 kids’ personalities and overall demeanors
Tumblr media
I’ve already covered the deeper details of each 02 kid’s character arc and development throughout the series, but I figured I might dedicate a more specific post about the complexities of their outer personalities, and their behavior patterns on a day-to-day basis. 02 is the kind of series that doesn’t really spell out what the characters tend to do or don’t tend to do, or what boundaries they will and won’t cross, which means it can be a bit of a challenging task to track their behavior over fifty episodes and figure out the patterns. Fortunately, these characters are written remarkably consistently over said episodes, so we have a lot to work with!
Disclaimer before we continue: In general, all of my 02-based meta is specifically written for the Japanese version in mind, but this especially applies to this one, because the majority of the nuances of the demeanor and personality traits described below were not retained in the American English dub at all (please see this post for more detail). As a result, please understand that if you’re working from the perspective of having only seen that dub, and the contents of the below post sound completely different, that would be why.
Daisuke and V-mon
Believe it or not, I would say that Daisuke is actually the most difficult to nail the nuances of out of this entire cast. This is probably a really weird thing to hear when the usual fandom mantra is that he’s “flat” or “lacking in development”, but I think the deceptive part is that while he’s simple-minded and himself doesn’t think in complex terms, analyzing his behavior as a whole and how he approaches things actually involves a lot of very delicate balances, and getting that exactly right can be very easy to mess up. Daisuke’s not a rude jerk who looks down on anyone, not in the slightest -- but he’s also not a saint who can do no wrong, either!
I think the easiest analogy (which I’ve brought up several times on this blog already) is that Daisuke is like a puppy, but not just any puppy -- a tiny puppy that barks very loudly at anything it perceives as threatening (regardless of whether it’s actually threatening), makes its feelings very clear with obvious likes and dislikes, and can do some phenomenally stupid things in a bid to please others, but in the end means no malice and only wants you to be happy.
This is to the point where I’m just going to have to bullet-point this, because there’s so much going on at once:
Excessively emotional: One of Daisuke’s earliest profiles refers to him as having “an excessively large range of human emotions”, and really, a lot of the humor surrounding him has to do with the fact he has incredibly dramatic, overblown reactions to nearly everything around him. So if he gets a little annoyed or suspicious of people making fun of him, he tends to get really dramatic about being upset, and when he experiences only a minor setback, he acts like it’s the end of the world, and when he’s emotionally hurt, he sometimes even gets set on the verge of crying (you can especially hear this in Kiuchi Reiko’s delivery). Even Daisuke himself doesn’t tend to get caught up in it for too long and gets over things surprisingly quickly, so you can take it as him just constantly being too wrapped up in the mood -- but when it really is a serious situation, he gets truly emotionally invested in it, too.
Too easy to read: Because Daisuke wears his heart on his sleeve and is dramatic about everything, he’s awful at hiding anything. Any attempt at trickery or trying to disguise his intentions quickly blows up in his face because he’s too simple-minded and too transparent.
Not malicious: Daisuke only ever lashes out or gets angry at others when he thinks others are doing something he disapproves of, or when he thinks he’s being attacked; he’s very warm and kind to everyone otherwise (even in the earliest parts of the series, when he’s at his roughest, you might notice he’s very soft around Chibimon, as if understanding that his partner is now in a very small and delicate form and needs to be treated accordingly). In other words, Daisuke is very quick to get defensive, but he has no malice or reason to be condescending towards anyone otherwise, and he’s perfectly friendly with people even when they’d provoked him earlier (because he doesn’t really hold grudges). He doesn’t attack people without reason; even when he voices dissent against what someone is doing, he very rarely, if ever, insults a person or their character directly. Even when he’s trying to state his opinions (such as when he bids for the others to accept Ken), he never forces them down others’ throats and accepts that they disagree with him, even if he’s clearly not happy with their disagreement.
Easily critical and suspicious: Daisuke is a very bluntly straightforward and honest person, and he seems to get most set off by people who act suspicious; note how his early-series outbursts towards Takeru tend to be when Takeru’s acting evasive, and in Hurricane Touchdown, he catches onto Wallace’s shady behavior even before he starts flirting with Miyako (Daisuke’s own method of trying to seem attractive to others involves just “doing something cool and hoping it’ll impress others”, so he seems to dislike the concept of flirting as a whole). Because of that, he catches easily onto “things looking off”, so he tends to call it out (even if sometimes he’s overdoing it and there isn’t actually anything significant to be upset about).
Supportive and adoring of others: Other than the moments when he gets set off, fundamentally speaking, Daisuke likes other people, is perfectly willing to acknowledge them or heap praise on them when they do something awesome, and generally cares for their well-being. He’s easily defers to others when he understands they’re better than him at something, and he even has a decently realistic scope of his limits (see how he’s perfectly aware he’s likely to lose the soccer game in 02 episode 8, and figures he might as well enjoy the experience). This is even taken to its logical conclusion in the Kizuna drama CD when he “credits” his friends for giving him amazing and insightful advice when all of it was actually pretty ordinary stuff they’d done offhandedly. It also means that, given his penchant for getting emotionally invested in everything, he has a huge emotional stake in making sure his friends are doing okay, and supports them accordingly.
Deferential to seniors/elders: Tying into the above, you may notice that Daisuke takes a properly respectful and soft tone towards his elders and seniors in nearly all occasions, even to the point of occasionally using proper polite-form language around them. All things considered, Daisuke is a pretty well-behaved kid.
Constantly getting strung around: As much as Daisuke looks like he’s aggressive, in actuality, it’s very easy to get him to back down if you argue against him strongly enough, and since he has such a “the heck is that?!” attitude all of the time, you can see him constantly getting strung around and at the mercy of things happening around him. That doesn’t mean he doesn’t have enough will to put his foot down when it becomes a really important subject (especially in the second half of the series), but it’s very often when he’ll be talked down by others around him and shrink with an “oh...okay...” In fact, this is why a lot of his actions aren’t nearly as reckless as they might be otherwise; as much as he’s a bit hot-headed and likes to lead the attack, he also has a sense of self-preservation and intimidation when things look a bit too dangerous, and will only push forward in such a case when there’s something he really believes in at the other side of it.
Lacking in self-awareness and insecure as a result: While Daisuke doesn’t have any signs of persistent self-hatred (on the contrary, there are times he arguably comes off as overconfident), it also seems that he has practically zero awareness of how he himself is doing -- which means that he ends up rolling over like an idiot trying to get others’ approval and trying to impress them, even when it’d be clear to anyone else that he already has that approval. This also likely ties into the fact that he’s perfectly capable of acknowledging others’ accomplishments and skills (see above), so you might even think that the problem isn’t so much that he thinks he’s bad as much as he keeps comparing himself to people he perceives as being that much more awesome. (Perhaps symbolic of this, he apparently has a complex over being shorter than Takeru and Ken, despite the fact that he seems to be of perfectly average height for a kid his age.) It seems that his only bar for how he’s doing is dependent on everyone’s reactions around him, hence why his ridiculous antics are significantly less pronounced when he has proper emotional support and friends to keep him in check. It’s also important to consider that this applies to his apparent crush on Hikari as well; his crush mainly manifests in wanting her approval very badly, and it’s mostly visible in terms of him losing a ton of brain cells in her presence and bending over backwards to please her or impress her. He never actually says in words that he’s interested in her, nor does he ever show signs of intending to seriously ask her out, so it’s something that’s only apparent because of this behavior, and it’s very likely he hasn’t even seriously thought through what would happen if she actually accepted him in return. You can basically see this as an extreme version of the way Daisuke tries to get approval from everyone else, and this trait of his noticeably dies down whenever there’s more important things at hand, or when he seems to be in the midst of getting proper validation from those around him.
Simple-minded and pragmatic: What’s usually referred to as Daisuke being an “idiot” comes from the fact he doesn’t play well with complex thinking, tends to settle for very simple explanations or answers, and more thoughtful types like Ken or Iori will often have to fill that part in for him. However, because Daisuke is so simple-minded, he’s sometimes the most pragmatic person in the group, because he doesn’t overthink things or get principles of theory caught up into everything. So if Ken is clearly not showing any indication of doing bad things anymore and is actively working to help, Daisuke believes he should be allowed to help regardless of what he’d done in the past, and if they’re dealing with the situation of potentially having to kill a living enemy, Daisuke points out that hesitation would have resulted in even more casualties. In essence, in a situation where everyone’s running mental loop-de-loops, Daisuke will usually be the first one to snap them all out of it and go “uh? Guys?” Moreover, this trait of his makes him very good at spotting glaring threads or asking questions about the elephant in the room, because since he works best with things that are right in front of him, he can’t not notice it.
Enjoys the little things: Because Daisuke is so simple-minded, it’s very easy to please him (this is why his chosen career path is something as simple as ramen making). Daisuke likes his friends, and appreciates even simple things around him, so he’s happy with even simple pieces of happiness -- hence, why he’s fine with potentially losing the soccer game in 02 episode 8, because he’s ready to simply just savor the experience of getting to play against a respectable and formidable opponent.
Note that the main reason Daisuke never seems to bring up any of these issues with himself within the series proper is simply that he doesn’t seem to be aware of them -- he’s too simple-minded to understand what’s going on with his own behavior in depth, and hence, this is how he can say he’s not worried about too much by the time of 02′s finale, especially since by that point he has a proper support group that’s already helping him deal with most of his issues anyway.
Daisuke also has the roughest speech pattern out of any of the 02 group (similar to Taichi and Yamato in Adventure); he has a tendency to shorten words a lot and use “rough” variants of words (for example “-nee” instead of “-nai”).
Mischievous, friendly, and playful, V-mon is pointed out even by official sources to be much like his partner (far more so than usual), and it’s likely a byproduct of the fact that Daisuke himself is very honest and straightforward about his emotions and thoughts, and so since he has nothing to hide, V-mon is pretty much exactly like him -- with the major difference being that he’s a little more outwardly friendly and less likely to lash out angrily. So he’s effectively Daisuke without that very thin abrasive exterior, and because both of them are so like-minded and friendly, they get along extremely well (albeit with quite a bit of comfortable bantering on the way there).
Ken and Wormmon
Ken is the more intellectual type that Daisuke isn’t, and even after his stint as the Kaiser, it’s clear that he’s still quite studious and naturally interested in studying things. Looking closely at his style of dress and way of carrying himself (note how he lays down his chopsticks in 02 episode 36) indicates he’s also a rather tidy person in general. Being someone who’s capable of thinking things thoroughly, this makes him able to have a lot of deep insight into both intellectual and emotional issues, but because he takes things too seriously sometimes, he can sometimes come off as a bit overly stickler or insistent (note Daisuke and Ken’s Shopping Carol, where he subjects Daisuke to a long-winded lecture about the history of Christmas, because, really, he’s a nerd), or lead himself down the wrong direction when he’s having a hard time being straightforward (such as when he comes up with some very flimsy theories about why Jogress might be dangerous in 02 episode 28).
In fact, Ken’s disposition could be considered to be the opposite of Daisuke’s in many ways; while Ken is much softer and more conciliatory on the surface, he’s actually much more assertive and strong-willed by default, and it’s made clear that, even after his reformation from the Kaiser persona, he could still be vicious if he wanted to, he just doesn’t enjoy it because he doesn’t like it and it goes against his belief system (note that he even offered to "dirty his own hands" in lieu of the other kids if push came to shove and Archnemon had to be killed in 02 episode 29, even though he clearly wasn't enthusiastic about the idea). In fact, he has a very strong sense of responsibility and believes heavily in making up for what he’s done -- recall that 02 episodes 26 and 49 involved snapping him out of it by reminding him that there were things that needed to be done, and that he himself still had many things he wanted to do that wouldn’t be addressed if he’d stayed fixated on his past. Thus, Ken doesn’t deny nor avoid anything he’d done, and he isn’t even all that prone to self-pity -- it’s just that his tendency to put too much responsibility on himself means that he also takes a while to accept everyone’s support, too, because he doesn’t like the idea of putting burdens on others.
Because Ken is actually one of the more straightforward people in this group and a fairly honest person (at least, as long as he’s not lying to himself), he might hold himself back a little bit in order to not be rude, but he doesn’t do it nearly to the same degree Takeru or Hikari would and is much more willing to speak his mind when he has an opinion he wants to voice or needs to sort out his thoughts on something. Conversely, he’s not nearly as cold as Iori can get when criticizing things (he’ll certainly be firm, but not as incisive). Most post-02 materials also indicate that he’s not above being a tease or even a little mischievous (see Armor Evolution to the Unknown, Diablomon Strikes Back, Daisuke and Ken’s Shopping Carol).
Ken uses a speech pattern that’s slightly more casual than Takeru’s, but not nearly as rough as Daisuke’s. While anime will often have speech patterns substantially change between different personas of a character, other than Park Romi’s delivery of a more condescending tone for the Kaiser and a significantly softer one for Ken, nothing about his speech pattern is substantially different between the two personas (not even the first-person pronoun), indicating that, in the end, they’re really the same person after all, just manifesting the same personality traits in different ways.
Wormmon is affectionate and clingy, unfailingly loyal to Ken, and his biggest advocate during a time when Ken is trying to relearn how to love and accept himself -- meaning that he ends up very important to providing Ken the initial support he needed before Ken allowed other friends into his life. Wormmon isn’t all nothing but clinginess, though -- he has some insight about the weight of his experiences when prompted (02 episode 46), and in fact is more than capable of calling out Ken’s behavior when he’s being unreasonable or throwing himself into denial (see 02 episodes 27, 30, and 49).
Miyako and Hawkmon
Miyako approaches everything she likes with an attitude that makes her come off as constantly having bubbles and hearts around her. When she likes something, she says so. When she doesn’t like something, she says so (and she will go off when she’s on a roll; see 02 episode 14). In fact, part of the reason she so infamously voices her opinion on people being cute is, quite simply, that it’s her honest opinion. (Note that she never actually tries to ask them out or anything -- she just wants to make it very clear that they’re attractive.)
For the most part, she adores the people around her, and, like the others in the 02 group, she’s perfectly respectful towards elders.  She also loves poking her nose in others’ business and trying to be as helpful as possible, which is good in that she ends up being a huge help to others, but also not good in that sometimes she overdoes it a bit (when Hikari calls her out for being a “handful” in 02 episode 31, the word she uses is one that literally means "a little too overly involved in others' business").
Miyako is the one who gets everyone up in high spirits by being cheerful, and whose cheer rubs off on everyone else around her (see her cheerfully leading the charge into the Digital World with her “Digital Gate, open! Chosen Children, let’s roll!” catchphrase). This is something the rest of the group catches onto very quickly, asking her to supply the “usual cheer”, and the later episodes of the series especially drive home the fact that her presence and antics bring happiness to those around her.
Miyako has a similar “chaotic, sloppy, and straightforward” demeanor to Daisuke, but there are some key differences. Unlike Daisuke, who’s bluntly honest about his opinions mainly because he doesn’t really hide things in general, Miyako’s opinions will be out of her mouth before she can control it. In other words, she has a nasty case of foot-in-mouth syndrome. In addition, while Daisuke tends to have a very thin skin and lashes out defensively out of instinct, Miyako takes things much more at face value and doesn’t blow a fuse nearly as easily, but because she’s significantly more assertive and aggressive, she’s much more prone to doing what she wants on her own whims instead of backing down to anyone. In fact, Miyako is significantly more emotionally sensitive in the long run, so while Daisuke tends to blow a fuse more easily, he’s also able to shrug it off and move on more quickly, whereas Miyako has a thicker skin, but when she does take emotional pain, she takes it much more deeply and harshly. She also tends to get overwhelmed easily by stress and panic, which makes her one of the more prone to running around in circles and doing frantic things in the midst of it.
One thing you might notice about Miyako is that she’s actually more critical of herself than anyone else in the group is; most of the time they act with mild exasperation at her antics but don’t tend to criticize her directly, whereas Miyako is very aware of her own shortcomings and is constantly either criticizing herself or comparing herself negatively to others (see: 02 episodes 10, 14, 18, and 31 especially). If she slips up and does something that stepped on someone else’s toes, it doesn’t take her long to realize that she’s messed up and want to do better. So while she generally tends to act the most in-your-face and aggressive, she also doesn’t necessarily want to be this way, and suffers from self-confidence issues and a poor opinion of herself.
Miyako uses a feminine speech pattern that’s a bit more casual than Hikari’s (she noticeably is willing to use the word anta for “you”, which has a bit of a connotation of being abrupt and in-your-face, especially with Daisuke). She’s also the most likely to physically manhandle things, both in the affectionate (hugging people) and aggressive (grabbing things and jumping on them in order to attack) senses.
Hawkmon is repeatedly referred to as being like Miyako’s “knight”, since he has absolute loyalty to her (in spite of her ridiculous antics often meaning he gets strung around by her) and is effectively in charge of minding her so she doesn’t get too out of control. While his overly polite and gentlemanly demeanor initially seems like a sharp contrast to Miyako’s aggressive and messy personality, you might also notice that, at their cores, the two aren’t all that different -- both are unfailingly loyal to others, and both also have a penchant for dramatic theatrics and being a bit overly proud of themselves.
Iori and Armadimon
The key thing to know about Iori is that he’s not stoic because he’s not feeling fervent emotions, but rather because he’s constantly holding them back (this is especially apparent if you look carefully at his facial expressions and Urawa Megumi’s delivery, where you can tell his facade is often “slipping” even when his words would indicate otherwise). Since Iori is trying to live by the ideal of being a model citizen, especially under the very formal environment he was raised in, he comes off as mature for his age, but it’s very important to not forget that, underneath all that, he’s still an impressionable nine-year-old child with the wide range of emotions and immaturity of one, and when he does emotionally fall apart, everything tends to burst out (see 02 episodes 16, 44, 47, 50). In addition, Iori is never condescending about the fact he usually acts more mature than the others; the impression is that he’s much more strict with himself than he is with others, and in fact still does look up to his elders in the 02 group even when they’re obviously a lot messier than he is.
The “need to be a model citizen” is something looming over Iori’s head at almost every moment, and it’s the easiest way to understand the way he acts in a nutshell. Iori is focused on the idea of “becoming a proper adult”, which means that he’s adhering to all of these principles because he feels they’re necessary to live a proper and honest life as per the formal manners that his family background trained him into. But like a young child who insists “you have to do this because those are the rules!” all of the time, Iori is over-applying all of this, and even his own grandfather advises him that he really needs to chill (02 episodes 5, 24). In short, he struggles with thinking flexibly and understanding that life isn’t all that clear-cut, because he’s a young child. Since he also tends to bring out these things in relation to “what my father would do/say”, it’s implied that he’s basing all of this off of having only hearsay to work off of in regards to what his father was actually like, to the point of aspiring to an impossible, saintlike version of him he’d created in his head.
Note that Iori’s “rules” have less to do with institutional rules (that would be more of a Jou thing) and more to do with self-imposed personal rules; for instance, he doesn’t mind sneaking into school during a holiday when it’s obviously not hurting anyone (02 episode 6), but he struggles with things like wasting food (02 episode 3) or not formally introducing himself to an elder (02 episode 5). So in other words, his adherence to principles has heavily to do with “the right and proper way to live” more than anything, and what he believes is the right thing to do in a given situation.
Iori’s journey in 02 is largely fueled by the fact that, as an inheritor of sorts of the Crest of Knowledge, he has a sense of “I want to know and understand more” whenever he sees something that makes him curious, but unlike Koushirou’s desire to learn more about the world around him in terms of its technical workings, Iori mainly wants to know more about people. The reason he begins to let go of his inflexible mindset is that he has the humility to understand that he still has a lot more to learn and understand, and when he sees behavior from others that doesn’t make sense, he does his best to learn more about it -- hence how his aggressive probing into learning more about Takeru allows them to reach an understanding and eventual Jogress, and how he’s able to eventually reassess his own view of human morality and emotions.
Iori sticks out in that he almost always uses the formal variant of Japanese in most situations (nobody else in the 02 group does this). However, formal in this situation doesn’t necessarily mean polite; Iori doesn’t believe in flattery and will bluntly state his opinion in said formal tone, and will be very cold towards something he sufficiently disapproves of or doesn’t have any respect for, which can make him even come off as passive-aggressive at times. (Noticeably, while he still asserts his own opinion, he does refrain from criticizing the others in the 02 group too much, presumably because he respects and looks up to them a lot as his elders, regardless of how chaotic they can sometimes get.) In addition, because a lot of his demeanor comes from him restraining himself, when his emotions are sufficiently pushed over the edge, he loses grip on the polite form and starts “lapsing” back into the casual one.
Because Iori was so young during 02, and because the events of its story ended up really upending his view of the world, the huge eight-year gap between 02 and Kizuna makes it difficult to predict certain things about his demeanor at the time of Kizuna (especially since his own voice actor commented on the difficulty of conveying the nuances of Iori’s character, thanks to only being able to work with the limited time frame of a movie that doesn’t put him in the kinds of emotionally drastic situations that push him to his limit). That said, everything we’ve seen of him in the movie itself and the drama CD makes reasonable sense; now that he’s much older, he comes off as having much better restraint on his emotions and coming off as genuinely calm, but he’s still not one for flattery, and you can still see very minor slips in his facade every so often.
Armadimon also initially seems like a sharp contrast to Iori in terms of demeanor, in that he’s much more casual and laid-back, and he’s indeed a huge factor in reminding Iori to chill once in a while -- but, much like Iori, he prods and asks questions about anything he’s curious about. This initially seems to be out of simple-mindedness because, being a Digimon, he doesn’t understand human society that well, but his very basic questions often end up snapping Iori back to reality in realizing that he’s getting hung up on things that don’t actually make practical sense. Urawa also felt that Armadimon fills in some of the void that Iori’s late father left behind, in that he provides Iori with unconditional love and helps guide him.
Takeru and Patamon
Takeru is the kind of person who seems to dislike major disruptions to the status quo, so he doesn’t say anything inflammatory that’ll rock the boat. It’s very difficult to get him to talk about serious topics related to his deeper personal feelings (02 episode 17, 35, Spring 2003), and even when it’s clear he might have more misgivings on the situation, unless it’s an urgent situation where it needs to be brought up, he won’t voice his misgivings too clearly for the sake of not causing trouble (hence why Daisuke is so unsure what to make of him in the early episodes of the series, because Takeru constantly fails to clarify his own position in favor of a “good for you” or “sure, you keep believing that if you want” attitude). This also makes him the most likely to awkwardly change the subject or try to distract with small talk, and it means that, even when he’s saying cheerful, pleasant things, it’s very likely there’s pain or uncertainty under that initial facade. (Note that while his suspicions of Ken during 02 episodes 25 and 27 aren't nearly as vicious as Iori's turn out to be, we learn that he's still willing to quietly accuse Ken of working for his own self-satisfaction in the latter episode, but he never brings this up to anyone but himself.)
Because Takeru isn’t  necessarily doing this to be consciously dishonest, it does mean that he also has positive applications of this tendency to take everything in stride and keep the peace, because he ends up keeping the more extreme personalities in the rest of the group in line and acts as an effective mediator. You could say that he has a pretty high amount of tolerance and a capacity for taking everyone’s points of view in mind. However, since it’s also very difficult to tell what he himself is thinking, his use of this as a poor coping mechanism for his personal trauma leads to a tendency for him to suddenly explode in a mess of emotions whenever something gets too personal, leading to sudden conflict, and with others at a loss in terms of how to deal with him (the most extreme example being 02 episode 19, but also present in 13, 11, and 34). This “two-sidedness” is why it ends up having to be the more consciously methodical Iori who steps up to try and understand him better as his Jogress partner.
Fortunately, Takeru shows signs of becoming more straightforward in the aftermath, although you can see that he still has a penchant for mild flattery and “trying to hold back for the sake of not being rude” all the way up to Kizuna (but, again, this can’t be said to necessarily be a bad thing when it means he has a valuable skill as a mediator).
Takeru has a fairly neutral speech pattern that comes off as casual but not too aggressive or assertive (not as absurdly polite as Iori’s, but slightly less assertive than Ken’s).
Patamon initially still seems to be “immature” in the same way he was in Adventure, which initially seems to widen the gap in personality between him and Takeru, but looking closer reveals that the differences aren’t as big as they seem; Patamon seems to have gained a capability for slyness and active trolling behind his playfulness (see 02 episode 7), not entirely like Takeru starting to use his evasiveness in a teasing-like manner. Moreover, Patamon does actually seem to have gained a bit of proper maturity in the meantime; see how he instructs the Baby Digimon on convenience store food in 02 episode 3, and in general seems much more willing to take independent action in ways he didn’t always in Adventure. Noticeably, Takeru’s difficulty with his own convoluted feelings means that he can’t even have a proper heart-to-heart with him about it on the situation (most glaring in 02 episode 34, where it’s implied that Takeru would rather leave Patamon to be happy right now instead of bothering him about it), especially because he’s clearly having difficulty even working it out with himself. However, despite their ostensible differences in mentality, Takeru and Patamon have no difficulty getting along at all in 02, and, other than Takeru pampering Patamon a bit, there isn’t all that strong of an impression of them being so mismatched -- perhaps because, in the end, they really aren’t all that different.
Hikari and Tailmon
Taichi stated in Adventure episode 48 that Hikari has a problem where she's so selfless and thinking of others that she'll never speak up about her own problems. Hikari states in 02 episode 31 that she compulsively cannot speak out about her own feelings even if she wanted to, to the point she’s jealous of Miyako for being able to be more open (even if it means being overkill at times). As a result: if Hikari’s talking about “the right thing to do”, or something for everyone’s sake, or something that’s relevant to other people and what’s best for them, she will be extremely vocal and quick to act, and she’s not above even chipping in with criticisms (see: 02 episodes 19, 32, 44). In fact, she’s fully capable of being playful or toying with others if she really wants to (see how she casually manipulates Daisuke into calling a lunch break for everyone in 02 episode 6).
The moment the issue at hand is about herself, though -- her own feelings or pain, or something that might hurt others’ feelings (hence the presumable reason she dodges Daisuke’s affections rather than proactively doing anything about it), or something that would put a burden on others for her own sake -- she completely clams up and refuses to do or say anything, and when bad things start happening to her, she resigns herself to her own fate and concludes she can’t do anything about it. Hence, why she takes such a defeatist attitude towards the Dark Ocean swallowing her up in 02 episodes 13 and 31, and why it’s such a big deal if she even so much as asks for help. 02 episode 31 indicates that Miyako reaching out to her is an important step in breaking her out of her shell, and the Kizuna drama CD -- which has Hikari assertively declare something she personally wants -- heavily implies further that Miyako was instrumental to this becoming possible.
Hikari is compassionate for others to the very end, expresses pity for BlackWarGreymon as early as 02 episode 31, and catches on quickly to Ken’s feelings on himself in 02 episode 37 (and even back when she’d been more skeptical about him in 02 episode 25, she never seemed to have real personal distaste against him as much as she still wanted to make sure he was trustworthy first). But although she’s one of the most compassionate in the group, she’s also one of the most assertive in the group. This leads to something that initially seems like a paradox: she’s actually more fervent about the need to fight than the more aggressive Miyako is. Miyako is, ultimately, emotionally caught up in everything and briefly falls apart at having killed LadyDevimon in 02 episode 44 (even despite knowing how horrible of a person she’d been), but Hikari is the one who points out that there would have been more victims if they hadn’t. 02 episodes 25 and 43 had made it abundantly clear that Hikari didn’t like it at all, but she states in 02 episode 37 repeatedly that they need to prevent there from being victims -- meaning that she values the importance of protecting all lives, including those who would be hurt in the process, and thus has some of the more resilient guts when it comes to the prospect of fighting to save others. Again, her hesitation only comes into play at its worst when it has to do with herself; working to save others is a no-brainer.
Hikari uses a casual feminine speech pattern that’s less in-your-face than Miyako’s, but she’s still a bit more casual than she was in Adventure, when she used the more polite watashi instead of atashi. Interestingly, Tailmon herself seems to have mirrored this as well, presumably because now that she’s had more time to recover from her miserable life under Vamdemon, she’s able to enjoy her life a bit more freely. This means that, while Tailmon is still the most mature and put-together of the Digimon partners in the 02 group, she sometimes acts a little more casual and playful in a similar way to Hikari, and while she has a certain degree of stuffy personal pride (see how she wasn’t very amused at how frivolously the other Digimon were playing around in 02 episode 3), she’s still open to enjoying herself a little more freely. Hikari, for her part, becomes surprisingly like-minded with her during those times -- see them in 02 episode 12 -- and, as stated earlier, it’s not like Hikari isn’t up for making tough decisions when they’re needed, either.

Why Mikasa?
“He didn’t share his genocidal plan with her! He seems determined to save Historia from becoming a titan and a breeding machine! He’s literally fighting her squad! Why the heck do you think Mikasa is special to Eren and to the story??”
*bored face*
Simple. He does/says things to her/with her that he has literally never done or would never do with absolutely anyone else, situations wherein even non-shippers cannot immediately say “Well if _____ were in Mikasa’s place, he would’ve done the same thing!”
Most people mention his determination to save Historia from her fate as anti-Eremika or pro-E//H proof, but if they were being honest they would admit that he would have been JUST AS DETERMINED if the one whose freedom being threatened with titan-ship and broodmare-ship were Mikasa. Or Armin. Or Levi. Or Jean. Or Connie. Or Sasha. Or LITERALLY ANY ONE OF HIS FRIENDS. I cannot single out Historia as the only person he would do this for, and even if you ship that, you cannot genuinely tell me that if, for example, Mikasa was the sacrificial lamb that had to become a titan and spit out babies for the plan, Eren would just stand by and let it happen. That he wouldn’t be as appalled, that he wouldn’t be opposing it with every fiber of his being. Same for anyone in the cart with him (you know, the group of people he referred to as the ones he cares about the most?). Historia is the one with royal blood, which means she’s the sacrificial lamb in the plan, which means she’s the one Eren has to protect in the scenario. It doesn’t mean he wouldn’t protect his other friends if they had been in the same position! (And if you say that he wouldn’t protect his other friends like he would Historia, but then claim that Eren abandoning his friends in 138 is OOC, then you’re a hypocrite and I don’t know how to talk to you.)
Then they mention the fact that Eren didn’t “trust” Mikasa (or Armin) enough to share his genocidal plans with them (thus showing them his darkest side or whatever), but he did so with Historia. Uhm, ignoring the fact that he obviously didn’t do so because he knows his genocide plan was horrifying and that Mikasa and Armin would have enough moral backbone to not go along with it, people forget that he also told Floch about this plan. (All aboard the Eren/Floch train then?) :|
(And you know what’s unfair? If Mikasa somehow knew and then went along with his plan to literally kill millions, antis would be calling her a “slave” to her feelings for not standing up to him. But because it were someone else, somehow it’s admirable romantic unwavering support and acceptance? Give me a break.)
BUT
Let’s talk about the scarf scene. Yes, the now-and-forever, punching-a-titan-in-human-form scene. Now, if anyone had been in Mikasa’s place, thanking Eren tearfully and accepting death, I absolutely believe Eren would still have punched the titan. Yes, you heard me. He would have still fought, regardless of the friend he’s protecting. THE THING IS, would he have said those words (or something akin to those words) to anyone else? Basically saying “I’ll be beside you now and forever” --because duh how could he wrap a scarf around someone if he’s not right next to them-- in that ultra cheesy way (that I loved haha)? I mean what’s up with the “now and forever”, Isayama? Or would he have just said something like “Get up, we’re not dying today!” in typical hothead Eren fashion? Will he mutter “No, I’m not leaving you, now and forever” to anyone else? Even if you don’t ship Eremika, if your answer to that is not a super quick and certain yes, if you have to pause and think about it, then even you have to admit that maybe, just maybe, it’s a Mikasa-exclusive declaration.
Let’s talk about the “What am I to you” scene. I don’t even have to explain this. He knew he was about to turn rogue. He was about to become the villain. He was surrounded by a lot of people he loves (the very people in the cart blush scene were there), and it’s his opportunity to find the validation/love/convincing he needs. Whatever his reason was for asking this emotionally-charged question... why Mikasa? Or better yet, why JUST Mikasa? Why not ask them all one by one? Is it really just a situational thing, that Mikasa was there and he just randomly asked her? Or maybe... it’s because he’s looking for an answer only Mikasa can give?
Let’s talk about the blushing. I admit, there is a single scene where he blushes around other people too (the aforementioned cart blush scene that I adore). But there is a common denominator for all of Eren’s rare blushes. I’l give you one guess what/who that is. So far (and with only one chapter to go), Eren has only ever blushed if Mikasa is present. Once in a group, and all the rest to her and her alone. You cannot tell me he would blush for someone else because he literally never has! Considering all the times he had been alone with other characters, been saved by other characters, bonded with other characters, been complimented/praised by other characters... Why would Isayama only ever draw blush lines on Eren for when Mikasa is the subject?
(I have to clarify and say that I don’t think blushing is confirmation of someone’s romantic feelings at all. Mikasa blushed for Historia, Historia blushed for Mikasa, but I don’t believe that’s because they have a crush on each other. I’m just saying, if the reason Eren blushes is because he’s embarrassed/bashful/flattered, then how come he never blushes when he feels embarrassed/bashful/flattered around other people?)
(Also now that I’ve said that, I’m now scared he’s going to be blushing left and right in the last chapter for someone else because I have the worst luck when it comes to final episode/chapter ship confirmations: looking at you, Zutara. :)) )
Let’s talk about the death scene. It was brought to the audience’s attention that no one knew where Eren was. Now, either we say that Mikasa gambled in that moment (in which case daaaaamn girl this is not the time to guess!), or that Mikasa was so smart she figured it out before Armin (usually called the smartest) or Levi (the most experienced) did... or Eren showed her where he was. If you don’t want to accept the last option, I understand. I think it’s obvious but I understand that it’s not 100% specified. But if you’re like me, and you can see no other way for Mikasa to have known his location without him telling her, then that’s another point: Why would he tell just her? Why not Levi? Why not Armin? Why not all of them, like he did when he had that zoom conference call via paths? If Ymir was the one who revealed it, the question stands. Why to Mikasa, and not the others?
(And I’m not even going to delve into all the memory shards and the tuning out Zeke in the middle of such an important moment just to stare at himself wrapping the scarf around Mikasa. I mean, come on.)
--
I’m a paranoid person, and honestly I don’t want to “celebrate” Eremika’s canonization yet because as much as it really is at this point, it’s not over until the fat lady sings, as they say. Lots of things can happen: Isayama could go crazy, the rug could be pulled out from under our noses and Eren really did turn into a chad, it could be another one of those “let’s build up something so much but tadaaa he’s married and has kids with someone else because our audience can never see it coming and we can feel so smart about ourselves”-- looking at you, Whedon.
But when people say Eremika doesn’t make sense because Eren wants to protect other people... well, that’s like saying my father doesn’t love my mother if he tries his best to save my brother if he’s stuck alone in a burning car. Which is just stupid. Hence the long ass rambling above haha.

Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
I KNOW THERE’S BEEN A LOT OF CONTENTION OVER THIS SCENE, but within the episode itself, so far I’ve actually genuinely liked it a lot, and so much of that comes down to who Rafa Martez is and unreliable narrators in the Star Wars universe. Rafa is a character that I actually like very much, she’s incredibly fun to watch and there’s a heart somewhere in there, but this scene also doesn’t come without context.  She’s a hurt young woman who is not a good influence on her sister, even within this single arc she’s been shown over and over again that she thinks she can handle dealing with the Pykes, she drags Trace into trouble and justifies it, she has to admit by the end that she was wrong. Does this mean her hurt at the lack of what she felt from Luminara wasn’t genuine?  Of course not!  For all that “The Force will be with you.” is incredibly meaningful to Jedi and even within the context of the movies, that blessing is incredibly meaningful.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
"The Force will be with you” is important enough that it’s one of the biggest bookends for Luke’s entire journey with the Force, as a Jedi. It’s one of the last things Obi-Wan says to Luke on the Death Star before he dies. It’s one of the last things the Jedi say to Rey on Exegol to help her rise up to defeat Palpatine again. This isn’t an empty platitude to the Jedi, nor within the context of Star Wars as a whole, it’s incredibly touching!  The idea that Luminara saying them to Rafa is empty and cold, on a meta level, is to then also say that Obi-Wan’s words to Luke and Luke’s words to Rey, are empty and cold and meaningless. That Obi-Wan’s Force Ghost wasn’t still there encouraging Luke, that Luke’s Force Ghost wasn’t still there encouraging Rey, and we see those are a huge part of the grandness of Star Wars. THESE WORDS HAVE MEANING TO US AND TO THE JEDI. But that doesn’t mean that Rafa has to take comfort in them, especially as a Force-sensitive, that there is absolutely room for both of these points of view within Star Wars and one does not negate the other.  Rafa doesn’t feel the Force in the same way that Luminara does, even though it’s a demonstrable, provable thing that the Force exists, even though Luminara is giving her something that has meaning to her and to us, Rafa herself can’t do much with it, she can’t find comfort in it. This doesn’t make either one of them bad or wrong!  Luminara’s not great at comforting non-Force-sensitives (nobody is obligated to be good at comforting, this is not some terrible sin), but also the specific use of Luminara does not come without context on how people misjudge her and misinterpret her.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Even Anakin Skywalker, a fellow Jedi misjudges her and what she’s actually saying!  She’s not saying to abandon Barriss--we see her helping, we see the concern on her face, we see her joy at seeing Barriss alive again, we see her praising Anakin’s faith in Ahsoka, even as she maintains that being willing to accept the possibility that they can’t be saved is something Jedi must prepare themselves for. And why’s that important?  Oh, right, because THAT HAPPENED IN THE ARC JUST PREVIOUS TO THIS ONE, TOO.
Tumblr media
That is the arc we just watched, where Anakin Skywalker, the character who misjudged Luminara’s heart being prepared to mourn Barriss but let go of her, to celebrate her life, to accept what’s happened to her, is now telling the same exact thing to Rex about Echo. Yes, it’s a moment of irony, considering that we’re this close to Revenge of the Sith and the episodes don’t come without context that Anakin’s basically going to be like “ha ha yeah I’m not absorbing any of my own advice” once he fears Padme’s life is in danger, but it’s still part of the bigger context. --> Luminara’s point isn’t to give up, but that they must accept the possibility that they’ll lose their Padawans --> Anakin’s advice to Rex isn’t that they give up, but that they must accept the possibility that Echo is already gone --> This arc doesn’t exist without context of Revenge of the Sith looming on the horizon --> Luminara being the one to talk to Rafa about the loss of people she cares about does not come without context of all of the above ALL OF THIS TIES TOGETHER. This doesn’t undercut Rafa’s hurt or loss being genuine and valid, but it doesn’t make Luminara wrong, either.  Especially when look at how else Rafa is contextualized within this episode--she’s fun, she’s exciting, that moment in the holding cell is genuine feeling, but how does that scene literally end? With her being willing to sell Ahsoka out to torture, rather than herself.
Tumblr media
Ahsoka is defending her, saying the Pykes won’t touch Rafa!  Rafa’s immediate response is, “Yeah!  She’s right!  Take her instead!” and pushes Ahsoka forward. She’s still hilarious, she’s still a blast to watch, but maybe Rafa isn’t the best person and that throws her status as a reliable narrator a lot closer to being an unreliable narrator. So much of her actions clearly come from a place of being hurt, her willingness to do all sorts of shady things, her willingness to drag Trace into all of this, her willingness to overlook the spice that’s going to actively destroy lives, but as long as Rafa gets hers, it’s fine, her willingness to actively sell Ahsoka out or abandon her, is the context of where Rafa is coming from.  Hurt, anger, and selfishness of someone who experienced tragedy and let it color her view. And that is also the source of what she says about Luminara.  Not coming from a place of evil, but of someone who let tragedy color her view of the galaxy and the way she relates to people. I mean, look at how she treats Ahsoka, someone who has constantly been trying to help both her and her sister, that she’s ready to ditch Ahsoka constantly, even when Ahsoka hasn’t even tried to get across the bridge, she’s ready to just ditch her and leave her to the Pykes.
Tumblr media
Literally five minutes after the conversation in the cell, we have Ahsoka talking to her about her relatonship with Trace--not just that Rafa drags her sister into these missions without recognizing that Trace really kind of couldn’t say no to her, but specifically in the context of, “Trace would never believe you don’t have her best interests at heart.” Rafa genuinely, clearly cares about Trace!  But Ahsoka is our reliable narrator in this arc and we can trust a lot about what she asks, the points she makes--and she’s pointing out that Rafa is not actually coming from a place of reliability or true care. That she speaks to Rafa with softness, rather than anger, also speaks to that she recognizes Rafa’s hurt, but that doesn’t mean she’s not spot on about how Rafa isn’t actually thinking about Trace, that she’s justifying and rationalizing a lot of things, that Rafa is not the reliable narrator she presents herself as.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
And if that weren’t enough, there’s still more!  The way Rafa treats the Gotal who asks her for credits is dismissive and uncaring.  It isn’t that she has to give him money, but the way she tells him to buzz off, the way Rafa treats people in the galaxy (and maybe once upon a time she was a sweet girl, I could easily see that! but now she’s not acting out of an unbiased place, all her actions/words are coming from a place of bias now) DIRECTLY leads to the Gotal telling the Pykes about them. Attitudes towards people and reliability as a narrator have direct consequences even within a single episode!
Tumblr media Tumblr media
And, finally, the thing that made me clutch my heart was Ahsoka’s words about why she’s doing what she’s doing, especially as it’s also directly tied to Rafa’s treatment of Trace, that that was the conversation right before this moment: “In my life, when you find people who need your help, you help them, no matter what.”
Tumblr media
This is a Jedi right in front of Rafa.  For all that Ahsoka isn’t a Jedi any longer, this arc is her struggling to find her place in the galaxy, to find the path forward for herself as someone who was raised by the Jedi, who believes in their teachings, who is the person they helped her become, that is a good person because she herself is a good person, but also because that’s how Anakin and the Jedi taught her to be. It’s about Ahsoka struggling to accept that not everyone sees the Jedi in a positive light, but Star Wars is not a series that’s about straightforward or even honest narratives, from the very beginning it’s been baked into the foundations that the propaganda in the galaxy is a huge, huge factor, that misunderstanding who the Jedi are (and thus being willing to overlook a literal genocide against them, against their children, who were murdered just for being Jedi, to overlook that you can’t even talk about the Jedi or practice their culture without “disappearing”, it’s the literal definition of a genocide) and that what we’re told versus what we’re shown is often two entirely separate things and that these things ARE NOT CLEARED UP. These things are let go and never made right.  The galaxy’s view of the Jedi is never cleared up.  The galaxy’s view of the clones and the horror that happened to them with their minds being taken away from them is never cleared up. So we, the audience, know these things that the characters don’t always know and maybe won’t find out, ever. Thus seeing Ahsoka with our own eyes vs Rafa telling us her experience--an experience that is real from her point of view, whatever else is coloring it--fits in with the bigger structure of Star Wars pretty damn well and it’s up to the audience to remember the context, because the show won’t, as that’s not really how SW works. And none of this makes Rafa bad, she’s a valuable, worthwhile character and I adore her, she’s so much fun and we can all feel there’s a heart in there and I want good things for her!  But this arc is illustrating that the galaxy is a complicated place--as Trace says, “This life I lead?  It’s not how I was raised.  It’s how it is.” is about the entire galaxy, not just one small sub-corner of it.

Hello 👋🏼, sorry if I’m bothering u but ever since the recent chapters of BNHA I haven’t been able to stop thinking about the Todoroki family. Not many of my friends are into this anime and I just couldn’t stop myself from sharing this with you because I need to let this out.
[SPOILER ALERT 🚨!!! IF U DONT READ THE MANGA THEN U CAN JUST IGNORE THIS]
First of all:
AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAHHH!!!!
(I’m still screaming as I write because the backstories RUINED me.)
Poor Touya having this horrible obsession over heroics and having his father acknowledge him but ever since his quirk started reacting against his body the whole family got negatively affected by it.
Rei and Enji wanted to stop at two kids but with Touya’s sudden disadvantage and the latter’s craving for power, Natsuo and later on Shouto was born (the youngest getting titled as the perfect heir from the moment he was born). I got torn seeing Touya’s eyes succumb to absolute madness at the birth of his younger brothers.
What scared me the most was how when it was just Touya and Fuyumi, the two hardly interacted despite being only a year apart in age. Touya claimed that ‘girls just don’t get it’ this small foreshadowing was later brought to light in the most recent chapter where he once again rejects Fuyumi’s company in favour of ranting to only Natsuo and where he disregards his own mother— another ‘girl’ that doesn’t understand his obsession passion for surpassing All Might and someone who plays along to the acts of those stronger than them. Touya saw his mother as a weak person who had no choice but to marry for the sake of her family and have custom children. Little Touya firmly believed his very existence depended on getting acknowledged my his father and defeating All Might but it sadly didn’t come true😭😭
Also..... LOOK AT THE BABIES!!!! They’re all so CUTE!!!
Chubby Fuyumi!!!
Natsuo with a running nose
And Baby Shouto with a meme like face since the day he was born🤣🤣🤣🤣
So ADORABLE!
And another thing. FUYUMI WAS EVEN YOUNGER THAN I THOUGHT TO HAVE STARTED ACTING LIKE A SECOND MOTHER TO HER BROTHERS!! Look at the way she defended Natsuo when Touya went on a rampage and tried to attack Touya! And during moments when Enji and Rei fought the two most notable heroes were Shouto and Fuyumi; the former fighting on the frontlines to face his father while the latter stood behind to once again care for her remaining family that though weren’t involved in the fight, they still needed emotional support to get through it.😭
I AM SO SORRY TO BE GETTING TO THIS SO LATE ANON BUT I HAVE SO MUCH TO SAY!!!
TW: Spoilers, Brief Mention of Child Abuse (Physical, Emotional and Mental), General Fandom Wank
So, like, SO MUCH HAPPENED in those chapters and I ABSOLUTELY LOVE ALMOST ALL OF IT! There’s obviously all the things you mentioned above that were just amazing to see and learn! I know that a majority of the fandom has been absolutely livid about the reveals involving Touya being drastically different than what fandom thought they were all this time, but I think it honestly highlights how smart Horikoshi’s writing really is.
In Shoto, we see the effects of physical and mental abuse on a child, and how easily he could have ended up going down a troubling road much like Touya. Shoto’s saving grace is facing off against Deku in the Sports Festival, giving him an outside perspective and makes him realize that he can choose to be better, but that doesn’t just magically fix all of Shoto’s problems. Shoto still struggles with his feelings towards his Father and how he is perceived by simply being Endeavor’s son. We see that in the Provisional License Arc, where Shoto is so thoroughly rattled by Inasa. It’s even further pushed through how Shoto struggles with his feelings about Endeavor trying to better and whether or not he should forgive him. I feel like Shoto’s arc is incredibly strong and that his struggles are very realistic, which is why people love him so much. This whole concept is another thing I could rant about but I’m going to leave it here.
Meanwhile, with Touya, we see the effects of mental and emotional abuse on a child and how it can completely destroy them. I think people that act like Horokoshi “down played” and “ret-conned” Endeavor as a character to make him more sympathetic/ redeemable or that he’s simply writing Touya as “always being a bad seed” are missing the mark. This is, admittedly, something you see a lot when it comes to victims of abuse in the real world as well; the idea that if you weren’t physically or sexually abused on top of emotional or mental abuse, your abuse is somehow less “valid.” Now I’ve seen more voices speaking out against this mentality - which is relieving and positive - but it’s still a problem. The way Touya was abused is no less valid or scarring to himself as a person as what Shoto has been through was. Touya and Enji clearly had a deep bond as father and son. Hell, the fact that Enji is sobbing and saying he “can’t fight his own son” in regards to Touya, but clearly had less issue training Shoto until he got ill or passed out says a lot.
Touya was put on an incredibly high pedestal by Enji’s constant praise and attention. He was the apple of his father’s eye until the limitations of his Quirk were discovered. Enji had filled his head with promises and goals for what his future would be, essentially selling him what turned out to be a lie. We see Rei herself tell Enji that Touya “knows you expect something out of the kids.” Touya’s whole life up until that point was being told of all the great he would someday accomplish, and equating that to being deserving of his Father’s love, attention and affection.
And then he couldn’t live up to that expectation. And then his parents had two more kids following that revelation. The idea that Touya doesn’t realize that Natsuo and Shoto were meant to be his replacements - unbroken models that “deserved” Enji’s love - is clearly not missed by him. It’s evident in the way he looks at Natsuo after he’s born. He sees this as a sign that he is no longer deserving - no longer worthy - of love or support from the parent he absolutely adores.
We see this mostly from Enji and Rei’s perspectives, so we know the reasons they did it, but it’s clear they didn’t stop to think about the way this would be interpreted by Touya himself. This whole matter is only worsened by the fact that Enji refuses to make sacrifices for the sake of his oldest son. He pushes Touya to live a life outside of Pro Heroics while Enji himself refuses to do the same, thus setting a positive example and showing solidarity with his son. He instead pushes him away and distances himself, loses himself in focusing on Natuso and, once his Quirk turns out to not be what he wants, Shoto. Touya continues to push himself despite his limits in a desperate bid for Enji to look at him the way he used to; with pride and love.
What caused the fire that “killed” Touya? His anguish over being neglected and abandoned - left unloved - by his father yet again. It’s clear that Touya’s mental health is in need of some real focus that he has never gotten - due to both his parents negligence as well as the fact that mental health is highly stigmatized in Japanese society - and pairing that with the emotional and mental abuse he suffered at Enji’s hands broke him.
So many people are claiming Horikoshi is trying to make Enji “more redeemable”, but how do you get that? Enji abused Rei, his own wife, physically and emotionally and mentally until she had a psychotic breakdown, hurt their youngest child, and then robbed her the right to mother her children further by having her locked up in a psych ward for the next decade or so; built their oldest son, Touya, up only to then emotionally and mentally abuse him to the point he damn near killed himself in a frantic bid to garner Enji’s support only to return years later completely unhinged and looking to murder his entire family out of spite; neglected Fuyumi and Natsuo to the care of each other and hired help; alienated Shoto, his youngest son, from his siblings for his entire formative years, physically and mentally and emotionally abused him, groomed him to accomplish a task he never wanted, put him through such extensive physical training that Shoto would get sick or pass out.
Enji was a shitty father. He has a long ass road to continue walking if he ever wants redemption. The fact he didn't physically hit Touya doesn’t mean that Enji didn’t abuse his son and it doesn’t make Touya any less of a victim.
* End TodoFam Rant*
On a slightly lighter note, I also like all the information with Hawks’ past and all the parallels we’re seeing develop!
I’ve rambled briefly about this in other places the Huwumi discord but I want to expound upon this a bit more here.
I feel like Touya/ Dabi and Keigo/ Hawks are meant to be parallels to one another.
Back to back, we had proper name claims by these two characters. We had Dabi reveal his true identity as Todoroki Touya and then we have Hawks choosing to abandon his hero name to instead step up to fight as Takami Keigo.
I feel like “Dabi” was always a mask, of sorts. Dabi is typically pretty calm, cool, composed with the occasional bites of snark and cruelty. Meanwhile, we see Touya emoting and moving in a manner more akin to himself as a child, dancing about in manic delight over revealing his true identity and intentions. The pair of them are two drastically different people when you stop and look at it. “Dabi” was the mask he wore to gain ground to enact his revenge, and now that he is there? Now Touya can burn everything tethered to it down to ground.
Meanwhile, we have "Hawks” as he was forced to become as per the Hero Public Safety Commission. We had it revealed quite a while back that Hawks was a man of many faces, jumping from laid-back and chill to serious and focused quite frequently. “Hawks” is the presentation for the public and the Commission, groomed to be the perfect little canary in the mine that was Pro Heroics. The reveal of his true heritage, however, is not the killing blow Touya wanted it to be. Instead, it allows Keigo, the one who wanted to be a Hero to help people, the chance to truly dedicate himself to that. In being freed from the cage of “Hawks”, he is given the change to really soar as Keigo.
Now, I feel that “Dabi” and “Hawks” are most certainly parts of Touya and Keigo as well, respectively. Even though those titles were masks, they were masks made from parts of the men who wear them. I think what we’ll see going forward is the true elements of those masks bleeding back into the whole, and seeing the truest forms of each character.
For better or for worse.

Sing for the Moment
(Read on AO3)
Isabelle hangs up the phone to update her siblings and Magnus that Clary is almost here with Simon, they’re just running late. It doesn’t matter much - these informal nights in don’t really have a set timeframe, and the absence of Biscuit and Simon hasn’t stopped any of them from catching up and drinking while they wait.
Magnus isn’t surprised to hear the tinkering of the piano from the kitchen while he gets more drinks for himself, Alec, Isabelle, and Jace. He made the instrument a permanent feature in his home after Alec brought up his and Jace’s shared fondness of it and how it helps them work through their thoughts sometimes, but neither of them plays much while Magnus was around to overhear, and when he is it’s usually something controlled and classical.
What reaches him now is some pop song from the 2000s, if Magnus remembers correctly, which catches him off-guard entirely.
He’s even more surprised when he returns to the living room to see Alec is the one at the bench, frowning intently down at the keys after messing up.
“C’mon, I know you know it,” Izzy encourages, leaning eagerly over the side of the piano.
“Drinks are staying over here for whenever you’re ready,” Magnus says, setting them down on the table and not bringing them any closer to the intoxicated Lightwood siblings at the piano. Not that he doesn’t trust them not to spill anything on it but… well, he absolutely does not, and that’s a very expensive instrument. Izzy backs away from the piano to get her glass and Alec moves to do the same until Izzy stops him.
“No drink for you until I get my song,” she demands, pouting.
“Iz-” Alec starts.
“Nope,” Izzy says, picking his glass up along with her own and holding it hostage.
“Jace?” Alec tries. “A little help?”
Magnus isn’t sure if Alec’s asking for help in retrieving his drink or in figuring out the part of the song he can’t seem to remember.
“If I do it for you how will you learn?” Jace says, in a slightly mocking tone that makes Magnus think that’s a line Alec used on Jace one too many times in the past.
Instead of arguing Alec sighs and sits back down, adorably resigned, until he remembers the right chords after a few attempts.
Izzy’s so pleased she puts both drinks down on the table again, abandoning them in favor of returning to her brother at the piano. Alec plays the opening chords and when he gets to the melody starts to hum.
Magnus sometimes hears him humming songs around the Loft. He knows Alec can carry a tune, more or less, but when the humming turns into lyrics Magnus is surprised at how good he is at singing. Alec sings quietly but confidently, and Magnus can’t believe this is the first time he’s ever heard Alec sing. Soon Alec’s soft tones are drowned out when Izzy joins in, much louder and a slightly slurred, but still beautiful. As if on cue Jace wanders over as well, drawn in by his siblings’ shift of focus entirely to the music, and Alec instinctively shifts over on the bench to make room for his parabatai who provides some embellished accompaniment and sings as well.
It’s all Magnus can do to stand and watch in awe at the sheer talent of the three of them. Some of it he can tell is carefully honed by practice, the piano playing in particular, but a lot of it is a natural ability. He listens to the shifting keys, the trills of scales, an impressive vibrato, and gets lost in the music so much he almost forgets where he is and who he’s listening to.
When the song finishes Alec, smiling softly, notices Magnus staring in unconcealed admiration. “What?” Alec asks. There's a bit of a furrow to his brow, the confusion clearly showing that he has no idea why Magnus is gaping a little at the performance he just witnessed.
“How,” Magnus asks, astonishment clear in his tone. “Are you all so good at that?” He thinks it's a pretty valid question, but all three of the Lightwood siblings turn to him with the same confused look Alec has.
“What?” Jace asks.
“Surely someone’s pointed out that all of your voices are magnificent before,” Magnus insists. There's no way he's the first person to ever mention it.
Izzy looks uncertain. “What? Everyone can sing.”
Magnus shakes his head. “Not like that,” he points out.
Alec considers that. “Huh,” is all he says, before going to get his drink, already shrugging off the praise.
"Have any of you ever listened to the average person sing?" Magnus wonders aloud. The question isn't aimed at any of them in particular at this point, but he's curious.
"Well... no, not really. Stuff on the radio, but it isn't like Shadowhunters are belting Elton John songs through the halls of the Institute," Jace admits. Sometimes Magnus forgets how relatively isolated their upbringings at the Institute were, as far as exposure to others not just their age but also in simple, fun social settings.
"No, I don't suppose they were," Magnus concedes. "Well then, let me be the first to inform you that you have significantly above average vocal talents and now that I'm aware of it, Alexander, we are absolutely going to a Karaoke Bar."
Alec spins around to face him so fast he nearly drops the drink in his hand. "What? No. Absolutely not."
"I'll go," Jace volunteers, just as the sound of the door opening and closing reaches them.
"Me too!" Izzy agrees.
"Where are we going?" Clary asks, making her way into the living room.
"Nowhere-" Alec starts, at the same time Isabelle says, "A karaoke bar!" with great enthusiasm.
"Oh, I know a few great spots for that," Simon offers, and Magnus smirks as Alec groans. There's no way Alec is going to stay home knowing Magnus is out drinking with his siblings knowing the sort of chaos they could cause if left entirely unchecked. Not that Magnus would ever allow them to get in actual trouble, but...
"Fine. But not tonight. Please, my nerves can't take it this week," Alec practically pleads.
"Of course, darling," Magnus agrees.
Now that everyone is here Magnus heads to the kitchen to get more drinks for Clary and Simon. The night in is much more relaxing than an impromptu trip to a karaoke bar, that's for certain, complete with a mundane board game Simon brought with, more drinks, some food to soak those drinks up with, and a lot of laughter. By the end of it, with everyone now significantly tipsy if not full-on drunk, it's no surprise they end up back at the piano.
Clary and Jace sit on the bench while Jace tries to teach her a few chords to a song. It's awful, not that any of them expect it to be anything else. Alec challenges Jace to play something classical that would be complicated even while one is entirely sober, a challenge which Jace immediately accepts because he's Jace, and of course he does. The mood is so light that Magnus can't even bring himself to shoo Isabelle off the piano which she's currently sitting on top of, drink in hand, shifting so that she's lounging elegantly with one heeled foot up in the air like the girls in piano lounges in the movies while Simon hovers next to her in case she drops her drink, or herself, off the piano.
Tearing his focus away from the piano, Magnus wanders his way over to Alec who is watching his siblings and their significant others with open endearment from the sofa a few feet away. Magnus approaches him and holds out a hand, palm up in invitation. "May I?"
Alec looks from Magnus' hand up to his face for a moment before standing with a smile, placing his drink down on the side table so his left hand is free to wrap around Magnus' waist while his right takes his husband's hand. Alec looks like he intends on mostly swaying in place but Magnus has other plans. With a gentle tug forward he leads Alec around the coffee table, past the side of the sofa, and even for a brief diversion out onto the balcony while they dance around the loft in small circles of movement and the occasional dip or spin.
Not too many of those, though, after Alec starts to look a little queasy halfway through their dance despite his best efforts to hide it. Magnus isn't sure he'd admit it until he's two seconds away from ruining Magnus' shoes or one of their very expensive rugs so best to play it safe. By the end of the song they are just swaying, a simple back and forth in one another's arms. Whatever nerves Alec mentioned earlier from the previous week are long gone and he feels like putty in Magnus' hands.
"Thank you," Alec says softly, his voice barely above a whisper since his mouth is already next to Magnus' ear, chin resting on Magnus’ shoulder.
"For what?" Magnus asks.
"For this. Having my family over. I know we already intrude on your time normally, and I'm sure you don't want them around all the-"
"I'm going to stop you right there, Alexander. Because they aren't just your family, they're our family. And they're more than welcome as often as you want them here," Magnus tells him. "I know how much they mean to you, and if you still want to see them after working with them all day then I think I can manage a few nights a week of drunken Shadowhunters in the Loft."
"And vampires!" Simon chimes in instinctively before wincing. "Sorry. Vamp hearing, still don't really have a grip on turning it off when I'm drunk."
"Keep eavesdropping and I'm hiding the plasma next time," Magnus warns, though they all know it's an empty threat (and that Simon would show up, plasma or not).
Simon smiles, showing that he knows Magnus isn't serious, and turns back to helping Isabelle make her way down from the top of the piano as the last notes of Jace's song trail off to an end. Clary claps and Jace pushes the stool back so he can stand and take a very dramatic bow. The performance itself was riddled with mistakes, notes blurring together with fumbled keys and chords that were just a bit off, but even with all of those drunken errors it was better than most people with years of practice could probably manage. Magnus remembers his own poor performance on the first - and consequently last - instrument he attempted to take up before abandoning pursuits of a musical nature entirely. So, to give credit where credit is due, he drops his arms from around Alec to join in the small smattering of applause.
"Don't," Alec half-pleads, half-groans. "It'll go to his head."
Magnus laughs at that, returning his arms to wrap around Alec's waist. "You're lucky I like my hands better down here anyway," he murmurs into Alec's ear, sliding them down ever so slightly towards Alec's ass until he stops at the sound of Simon's voice.
"Gross-" Simon starts, and Magnus turns to level him with a warning glare for more eavesdropping that lacks any real heat. "They're getting flirty, I think that's our cue to leave."
Alec laughs lightly in Magnus' ear but it is very late. Magnus hadn't kept track of the time and he hadn't expected any of them to stay this long to begin with.
"Do you need a portal back? Or you can stay the night if you want," Magnus offers, not to anyone in particular because they're all welcome to spend the night if they need to. He can conjure up mattresses and cots for as many people as he needs if it's more than just one couple for the guest room.
"I think the fresh air will do me good," Jace says quickly.
"You just hate portaling when you're drunk," Isabelle chides.
"You're not the one he threw up on last time," Clary reminds Isabelle. "I'm all for walking if it means avoiding that fate again."
"You sure you're good?" Magnus asks one last time, because what kind of host would he be if he didn't?
They all nod. "Don't worry, I'll walk them back," Simon says, which might be more reassuring if Magnus wasn't acutely aware of how much plasma he had, but he seems to be steady enough with his arm around Isabelle to keep her from wobbling on her heels on their way towards the door.
"Text when you're back!" Alec calls, though that's routine for nights like these and the reminder is likely unnecessary.
"Yes, dad," Clary calls over her shoulder mockingly, but Magnus can hear the affection in her tone as she does and finds himself feeling rather fond of the whole scenario playing out in front of him.
Fond. It's not a word Magnus would've expected to associate with a bunch of Shadowhunters - and a vampire, he adds mentally, Simon's voice echoing in his head - but it's the one he keeps finding himself coming back to.
He enjoys watching how close they all are, how much they care not just about each other but the world around them. He’s fond of them as well, and not entirely because of their connection to Alec though that certainly helps.
Magnus turns to see about continuing the flirting he was recently accused of, only to be greeted by the sight of Alec slumped back down onto the sofa, eyes half-closed. If his heart wasn’t full of fondness before it certainly is now.
“C’mon, let’s get you to bed,” Magnus says. They make their way to the bedroom, with Magnus using a bit of magic to get them changed into sleepwear so they can crawl directly under the covers.
Just when Magnus is positive Alec is asleep he hears the gentle hum of a song he doesn’t recognize, but one that’s unmistakably a lullaby, sound through the silence. “Do I get sung to sleep every night, now?” Magnus whispers, shifting just enough to see the hint of a smile on Alec’s face in the dark.
Instead of answering Alec simply continues his quiet song, keeping himself awake just long enough for his phone to vibrate with the text from his siblings that they’re home safe. Only then does Magnus hear the notes fade to silence as they allow sleep to claim them.

Someone to Rely On
Summary: Su makes a difficult ask of Kuvira (Chapter 2 of this)
Kuvira had learned years ago that the fastest way to move between the city pods was to launch cables at the domes and then swing. Back when she was twelve or thirteen, she had asked Baatar to time her runs against the tram—for science’s sake, of course—and she always managed to beat it by at least a few minutes. The only downside was that it was illegal—thanks to the botched landings of some less coordinated copycats—and since becoming a captain of the security force, Kuvira tried to avoid breaking the law whenever she could help it. Being perceived as a hypocrite was bad for morale and even worse for public relations. But today the law was of no consequence; she had been summoned.
Still gliding above the Beifong estate, she flicked her wrist to turn the metal latch on the window in Su’s study and bend it open, somersaulting inside just as the matriarch took a seat on one of the sleek green couches.
Suyin regarded her with half a grin and a small shake of the head. “Right on time, Kuvira,” she said, pouring herself a cup of kombucha from a glass jug. "And Aiwei told me you'd never make it.”
Kuvira pulled a face at the mention of the truth seer. No sooner than she had put the key in the door to her apartment after rehearsal, Su’s advisor radioed, telling her to drop everything and rush back to the matriarch’s residence. It happened often enough that she was honestly beginning to question the utility of moving out.
“Not if I had waited for the tram,” she replied with a smirk, reeling the cables back into the spool attached to her belt.
“No, I suppose not.” Su laughed a little and gestured for Kuvira to sit beside her. “Kombucha?”
“I’m fine.” Kuvira tried not to wrinkle her nose at it. If the weird pit floating at the bottom of the bottle wasn’t enough of a deterrent, the muddy color of it did her in.
Su merely shrugged. “Your loss.”
“I thought you were having lunch with Opal today,” Kuvira said, knowing the little tyrant would find some way to blame her for the canceled plans. Whatever it was that had compelled her mentor to abandon the company of her favorite child must have been serious. "What happened?"
"There's been some troubling news.” Suyin crossed one leg over the other. “You’re aware that the Earth Queen has tried to levy new taxes on Zaofu in the past year?”
It was hardly a question. Kuvira had been the audience for the bulk of her anti-monarchist tirades for years. The matriarch never discussed matters of state with her children, lest the weight of politics ‘disrupt the flow of their creative energies.’
“And you refused.” She had helped Su and her advisors go over the ledgers the month before, and they hadn’t sent even a copper piece more than usual up to the capital.
“Of course I did. Why should the metal clan pay because her people can’t control the bandits in the north?”
The point was valid enough, but a distant part of Kuvira also wondered why the metal clan should walk on streets of gold while people starved a day’s drive from Zaofu.
“There wouldn’t be bandits in the first place if she would use the tax money she already receives to see to the welfare of the poorer states.” Kuvira said this in place of what she was really thinking; she had learned over the years that it was more pragmatic to commiserate with Suyin than to challenge her.  “What kind of leader builds new palaces while her people die in slums?”
“An Earth Kingdom ruler, I’m afraid.” Su sighed and leaned back against the couch cushions. “Ba Sing Se has been corrupt since before my grandparents were born. That actually brings me to why I called you here. My informants at court have reported that the queen sent soldiers to appropriate a shipment of raw platinum from our mines.”
“We can afford the loss,” Kuvira stated, pulling the figures from her working memory. “But you’re selling the platinum to Varrick Industries so they can build more mechs for the Southern Water Tribe.”
Suyin glanced at her then, her mouth curving up into a genuine smile. “Do I really tell you everything the moment it happens, or are you just exceedingly clever?”
Kuvira filtered out the praise, waiting for the true nature of the task to reveal itself. Compliments always preceded ugly work. “So you want me and the guards to intercept them and protect the platinum?”
“It has to be a stealth mission, executed by a small team,” Su told her. “You have full access to the metal armory, but there can be no uniforms or anything else that might be tied back to Zaofu, in case there are any passers-by. Let the queen think her men were set upon by more bandits.”
“And in reality?” she asked, though it was hardly necessary at this point.
“I think it would be best if they were lost in the Si Wong Desert.” The matriarch took a measured sip of her kombucha. “Don’t you?”
The first time she had asked for such a thing—in a similarly roundabout way—Su hadn’t been able to look at her. Even now, she avoided her eyes, fixing her gaze instead on the model of Zaofu that her husband had so carefully constructed so she could bask in the sunny glow of her wealth and accomplishments. But regardless of whatever guilt she felt or feigned, come nightfall Kuvira would be dispatched to secure the interests, dirty the hands, do all the things she’d never ask of the people she loved more.
“I’ll leave tonight.” She rose quickly, turning her back to the matriarch, lest her face reveal more than it should. She already had fingertips on the door before her mentor spoke again.
“One more thing. Do you think you can be back before Thursday’s rehearsal? The set should be done by then, and I’d love to see you and Luli emerging from the petals. I just know it’s going to be a great finale.”
She closed her eyes, breathed, and schooled her expression into cool neutrality before turning back around. “Of course, Suyin. I’ll make it quick.”
It must have said something horrible about her, the way the proud, adoring gaze her mentor fixed on her was almost worth the blood.
“That’s such a relief. I’m so glad I can always rely on you, Kuvira.”

My review:
I think I don’t really have to explain much, the title does a good job. This is going to be a little different than most reviews I do. I’m not going to comment every scene or comment on every step of the storyline, even though I will try to. For the most part I’m just going to ramble around for a bit. And try to write my thoughts down.
I remember when Cherry Magic fan edits popped up on youtube and it looked so cute I just had to watch it. During that time winter came into my town and another lockdown was around the corner. So, this show was really there to brighten my day once a week (or for a few days while I binge watched it).
The concept was really interesting, too. And here are my thoughts about it:
Adachi and Kurosawa
We start our story one day before our protagonsts 30th birthday. His name is Adachi. He has very low self esteem and and little confidence in himself (sounds familiar) but a big heart. It’s not always easy for him to say “no” (espacially to his co-worker). His life is mostly uneventful and repetitive. UNTIL one day on his 30th birthday he discover that the old wives’ tale that you develop powers if you are a virgin for 30years is actually true. He is able to hear peoples thoughts!
At the beginning he isn’t really sure if it’s just all in his head or if he really has this power. On his way to work he meets his co-worker Kurosawa. Due to a very crowded elevator, Kurosawa accidentally touches Adachi. Because of that, Adachi finds out that his super popular and super handsome co-worker is actually madly in love with him (relatable right?)
At first Adachi tries to ingore his powers. He can not be sure that the things he hears are really other people’s thoughts or just him making stuff up. He avoides crowds and Kurosawa. But fate just throws these two together again and again.
Since Adachi can read thoughts, every encounter he has with Kurosawa from now on excalates pretty quickly. Because our boy Kurosawa is just as horny as we all are. One day Kurosawa is being a “nice boy” and helps Adachi with the workload that his co-worker asked him to do. Totally selfless of course, not in any way him trying to be near his crush or anything noo. After hearing Kurosawa gushing over Adachi’s mole on his neck, that Adachi wasn’t even aware of, he is now pretty sure that his powers are real.
Adachi knows that - if the tale is true - he will only lose his powers if he also loses his virginity. And let me tell you something... Honestly, sex is probably really great and all but...you have powers. You are basically one step away of becoming a superhero. You can help people with that. Come one now, this show just proves that asexuals are above us all and are so powerful and deserve to be wizards. If you were able to life a life without sex to your 30s, it’s not that hard, you are almost halfway there. Just hold on.
This show follows mostly our two main leads, Adachi and Kurosawa, trying to manage their love for each other. But what makes Cherry Magic so sweet and heardwarming is the fact, that there are other topics being addressed besides same-sex-love. Like I said earlier, Adachi has extreme low self-esteeem and this is one of the biggest reasons why it takes so long for Adachi to realize and accept that he is not only in love with Kurosawa but also that he deserve this kind of love.
So many times, Adachi chickens out of telling Kurosawa how he feels and espacially when Kurosawa wants to take things to the next level, Adachi needs time. And Kurosawa respects that (bare minimum, but sadly the bar is so low) and gives Adachi time.
Kurosawa also suffers from some incecurities that he not often talks about, but since Adachi has his powers, we are often granted a quick look into Kurosawas head. And these little thought trains that we get tell us so much more about Kurosawa and fully flesh him out as a character.
We get to know about his fantasies, his wishes, his fears and insecurities. Sometimes, when Adachi reads Kurosawas mind, we get little fantasies. We see Adachi through Kurosawas eyes and it’s always a cute scene of Adachi smiling. We see how beautiful Kurosawa thinks of Adachi.
We get one episode from Kurosawas perspective, where we discover how Kurosawa fell in love with Adachi. He was always “aware” that he was there, but he never really “noticed” him. One day, when they both are having dinner with their boss and some random creepy lady, both realize pretty quickly, why they are really there (because of their looks). Kurosawa notices that Adachi does not drink alcohol and therefore he takes his glass and get’s drunk quickly.
Even though, it seems like a dumb thing to do, it tells you so much about Kurosawas character. How he wants to help people, even if that means he is the one to “suffer”. No matter the consequences, he helped his co-worker out there. The lady starts harassing Kurosawa and he turns her down in a very obvious way which was apparently something he wasn’t allowed to do. But fuck this lady and fuck his boss. Kurosawa, you did nothing wrong. She did.
He overhears his boss saying that Kurosawa is only a pretty face and apparently he can’t even do that right. This just gives him the rest and he leaves. Adachi, who was surprised by Kurosawa’s actions (drinking the alcohol for him), follows him outside to comfort him.
It’s a very touching backstory and it’s great that we get it in the middle of the show and not at the beginning, only allowing the characters to become more fleshed out.
When Adachi reads Kurosawa’s thoughts, he mostly thinks about how much he adores Adachi and how much he wants to help him becoming more confident. He often is pretty hard on himself and blames himself for things too often. He seems calm on the surface, but his inner-monologues show how much of a chaotic hopeless romantic he really is.
A reaccuring theme is Adachi being a little put off by how often Kurosawa get’s presents or just admiring looks or words. Because he get’s none and if so, he can’t really take compliments well.
What is really interesting is that through Adachi, we can hear that Kurosawa is not really enjoying all of this presents and kind words of his (mostly) female co-workers. He just wants to be praised for his work not his looks. Which is something only pretty people say. No, fr, I can only imagine that it’s super annoying that people only view you as “pretty” and therefore do not acknowledge your talents and skills. This show actually deals with that nicely. In Kurosawa’s episode he has this beautiful monologue: I had an advantage because of my looks. I hated that people only saw my looks. I knew it would annoy others if I talked about it. So, I pretended it didn’t bother me.
This show was not only about love, but also about loving and respecting yourself. Trusting yourself and gaining a little more confidence in yourself. What I loved so much about Kurosawa and Adachi is that they bring out the best in each other and help each other in so many ways.
At one point, Adachi tells Kurosawa the truth about his powers. Kurosawa tells him that he actually is happy that he has his powers, since they were the reason they got together in the first place.
But Adachi is not so happy about it. He grew used of the powers and now fears that his relationship won’t work out with Kurosawa, once he loses them. Since he wouldn’t be able to read his mind anymore, like he used to. The only option Adachi sees is: breaking up. And since Kurosawa respects his wishes, he leaves (hoping that Adachi would fight for him and maybe hold him back).
They make up in the end, when Adachi realizes that maybe communicating would be another option they have left. Because, guess what, that’s what most people do. So, they get back together and Kurosawa basically proposes to Adachi, which seemed...quite abruptly tbh. But hey, everyone has their own pace.
Tumblr media
Minato and Tsuge
Tsuge is Adachi’s best friend and also a virgin. Later, he becomes a wizard like Adachi, being able to read minds. He is a writer and spends his time at home 20/7, the 4 hours are probably just the hours he is willing to leave for grocery shopping and eating out with Adachi.
He has a really sweet cat and this cat will help him get him his future boyfriend. Minato, is his name. He works as a deliveryman. Tsuge doesn’t like Minato very much, since he is a so called “youngster” (oh gosh I think a brain cell just died while writing this).
Minato feels the same way about Tsuge “the old man”, but does love his cat. Tsuge develops feelings for Minato pretty quickly and even begins to stalks him, to find out more about him. He orders so much stuff from different shops just so this guy would show up at his doorstep again.
He finds out that Minato is actually trying to fullfil his dreams of becoming a dancer.
While it would’ve been a sweet idea, this couple couldn’t really win me over. First and foremost, how old is Minato supposed to be? The actor was at that point approximately 20/21 and he looks way younger than that tbh.  And in the show it’s never stated how old he is, his love interest states multiple times that he is “young” and refers to him as “the youngster(s)”. And it’s clear that Tsuge is 30. So...I just can’t ship them. Like, they are both of age and adults but it still feels weird for some reason. If the actor would at least look older...I guess that would maybe change my view on them. In reallife they are 6 (?) years apart which is still a lot but way less than what seems to be 8 or 10 years on the show.
It really didn’t help that Tsuge was the one initiating the relatioship and stalking Minato. Others called him even a pervert and honestly...he acted like one. Secretly talking pictures of someone, following them around, etc.
On top of that, their scenes often included cringy / over the top acting and triggered my second-hand embarassment, which...was that really necessary? Maybe, it was part of Tsuge’s character in the Manga, but you just can’t translate everything into a life-action show, because it looks hideous and awkward. In the more serious scene that Tsuge was in, he actually wasn’t all that bad.
I can take cringy acting, that’s how I survived most BL’s actually. But was it really necessary to have Tsuge kneel before Minato and scream at him how sorry he is in public? While people are watching? And Minato doesn’t really seem to be delighted by that. I’m sorry, but that’s where I draw the line, my cringe-o-meter exploded. I’m a very private and introverted person, so that just wasn’t it for me.
It actually hurts my heart that so many people think this is how socially awkward people behave, which - as a socially awkward person - I can’t confirm. We don’t flinch everytime people touch us, we don’t scream and shout and talk very fast, when we get nervous (at least not to that extent). And we don’t...ugh..back to the series.
I mean they had potential, they could’ve been cute and I don’t mind if anyone is shipping them, it’s just really icky to me and I can’t do that.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Things I disliked
The actors ages. I mean, I know that most asians look very young, but come on. No one can tell me that these guys are supposed to be 30. I guess the actor of Kurosawa was about 29 (?) so he comes closest (he doesn’t look like he is 30 but I appreciate the attempt) but the others...They just don’t look like they are 30. And please, don’t cast some really young-looking dude as the love interest of a supposedly 30-year old.
Over the top “humorous scenes”. It doesn’t make me laugh, just cringe. But this happened only with scenes between Minato and Tsuge. Sometimes, I just skipped them. But yeah...not everyone’s tea I guess.
No kiss. I don’t need NC scenes or anything too intimate. But the whole no-kissing seems more like a “no homo” situation here. These guys are insanely in love and are basically married and you tell me that they didn’t even kiss on camera ONCE? Don’t tell me they are asexual or anything (even though I would love to see more representation like that, I mean if the actors don’t wanna kiss or the management is against it, why not create a little more representation while you’re at it?) because I would support that, they just didn’t want to show that or maybe the actors didn’t want to kiss. But then again I ask myself...why not cast actors who actually want to act out the role? Or was it a management issue? Whatever it was, defiinitely made it seem less believeable and it felt more rushed. Like, even if you give me the classic “fish kiss” with eyes wide open and it’s basically just them pressing their lips together...this treatment most Korean BLs get (thank you TMS honestly) it would’ve been better imo.
Also, Minato and Tsuge had a kissing scene (it wasn’t good but still). And that even further aligns with my theory of the actors or the management not wanting them to kiss. But this show is still cute and enjoyable, so I’ll let it slide this one time.
Rushed ending. Like I already said, this kind-of-proposal came out of nowhere for me and felt rushed. Sure, they know each other for years, but they only began to grow closer over the last couple weeks. Shouldn’t they start with dating first, then go to living together for a few couple of months and then - after really being sure that they want it and after talking it through - propose? But hey, I’m the single one here, so maybe I am in the wrong here.
Things I liked
How they handlded Adachi’s powers. Adachi was suddenly able to read peoples thoughts. One of the most private and intimate things. And Kurosawa was just like ‘“k, I’m actually glad you secretly kept reading my thoughts” which seemed a little too anti-climactic. Please, sweety at least pretend that you are a little hurt that your boyfriend kept reading your most private thoughts. It’s like someone reading your diary without your permission.
But apart from that, they handlded it actually quite well. Adachi wasn’t super okay with reading other people’s thoughts. He didn’t use it for revenge, there were no bad intentions. He always wanted to help and only used it as a way to help others or clear things up. When he did use it for his own advantage, he felt bad afterwards.
Miscommunication subplot. Overused, lame, just for the sake of plot, annoying - these are the first things that come into my mind, when thinking about miscommunication subplots. But Cherry Magic actually did a decent job at it. There was a miscommunicating subplot at the end and I expected to hate it, but I actually did like it.
It makes so much sense here, since Adachi was so used to his powers at some point, that losing them seemed like he was no longer able to understand people or their feelings. The “oh no I lost my powers and since I used them to understand Kurosawa better I don’t know if we can be together now that I don’t have them anymore” struggle seems realistic.
Tsuge only made it worse by saying: “I forgot how difficult it is to sense other’s feelings [without being ablte to read their thoughts]” after having a minor fight with Minato. And since Adachi is a person that worries and overthinks quite often and easily, he didn’t take it too well. It could’ve been so much better, if they did actually drag it out a little more. But maybe it’s for the better like that. They got the most important points across, even though they resolved it pretty quickly.
No happily ever after. This title is actually a little misleading, since the couple did get a happy ending. What I mean with that is that they didn’t give the couple a “they are now offically a couple so there story ends with that”. Most shows think that viewers only want to see the couple coming together and call it a day. In Cherry Magic the story doesn’t end with them getting together. We see them struggle with their relationship, going on cute dates, breaking up, resolving their issues and semi-propose.
It’s nothing new or groundbreaking, but it’s rare and refreshing to see. I do like that shows always try to give us the “and all was well” happy ending after they get together, but seeing storyline like Cherry Magic, where they actually deal with them being a couple and show us their ups and dows, I really appreciate that.
Special episodes. IIRC there are a total of 3 special episodes that are just the cherry on top of this cake. I really did enjoy them. They weren’t necessary for the story to work, but were a nice add to it. Pure fluff and comedy. Speaking of fluff-
Fluff and feel-good. This show in no way ITSAY or MOD and nowhere near them. It doesn’t make you ugly cry at 3 o’clock in the morning. And it’s not a mystery where you sit at the edge of your seat, trying to figure out who is the big bad guy. But - and this is important - this show is not meant for you to feel these kind of emotions. Cherry Magic is more of a rom-com. A feel-good show. Some sort of “grab your blanket and some hot chocolate and watch it and feel safe” kind of show. Espacially needed during whatever the hell is going on right now.
So, if you ever want a show, where the leads are adorable and relatable, where there is a little sprinkle of magic and a ton of fluff and you just wanna lay back and find a safe space to escape reality, this is the show for you.
I think this covers my thoughts on this series. Thanks for reading. Check out my other reviews.

figayda - the kids are all right (right)
Tumblr media
(reposting for formatting reasons)
hi, this is an adorable prompt and was really fun to write. thank you!
ao3 link here
“You want me to teach you how to flirt?”
“Yes. Did you not hear me? Should I speak louder?” Ayda asks, raising her voice slightly.
“No, love, I’m just surprised is all,” Garthy says from where they’re lounging in the Gold Gardens. “After all, it’s not every day your parent-slash-child asks you for love advice. Ah,” Garthy sighs, “they raise you, die, then reincarnate and grow up so fast.”
“Please,” Ayda says, and though her level tone does not betray her, Garthy can tell that she is practically begging, “it is imperative that I learn this skill as quickly as possible.”
“Why’s that?”
“Fig will be arriving in Leviathan shortly,” she responds, hands fidgeting with the scroll that she is holding.
“Fig? The little tiefling girl who runs around with the Bad Kids?” This might be more challenging than Garthy originally assumed; if they remember correctly, Fig was pretty charismatic. She was probably rather experienced at flirting.
“Yes, she is extremely attractive, and I would like to be in a relationship with her.”
“Okay, well, you don’t wanna come on too strong, yeah?” Garthy says, gesturing vaguely with the bottle of mead in between their fingers. “Compliments are nice and all, but you don’t want to overdo it.”
“Is it weird or strange to compliment someone a lot?” Ayda looks nervous, and Garthy suddenly wishes that they could find every person who had ever made her feel bad about herself and personally kick them in the groin.
“No, no, compliments are very kind and wonderful, but flirting is about the chase, all right? It’s supposed to be a back-and-forth, like a dance. If you spend the whole time complimenting the person it’s hard to sustain any…” Garthy gestures with the bottle again, trying to convey the delicate communicative interplay of romantic repartee. It doesn’t quite come across. “Tension.”
“Duly noted. How, specifically, does one build that ‘tension’?” Ayda does not physically do air quotes around the word, but it’s evident enough in her tone.
Garthy thinks about it for a moment. The art of flirting is such a context-dependent one, but they also want to give Ayda actionable instructions. Eventually, they say, “if you can find a way to challenge her somehow, engage her in a little banter or maybe a friendly competition or some such, that can help build that tension you’re looking for.”
“And what do you do once the tension has been established?”
“Well, then you can start getting a little more physical, maybe put a hand on her arm, y’know?” Garthy says, waving the bottle rather dramatically now.
“Got it. I should keep the compliments to a minimum, challenge her to a friendly competition, and then touch her on the arm,” Ayda nods, committing the steps to memory like she’s reading an instruction manual.
“That’s about it, yeah,” Garthy replies, taking a sip of the mead to punctuate the thought.
Just then, the tiefling in question walks into the room.
“Hey Ayda, you look really nice today,” Fig says, voice bright and sincere. Garthy clears their throat. “Oh, and um, hi Garthy.”
“Hello, Fig,” Ayda says, and then opens her mouth as though to say something else. She quickly shuts it again, and Garthy imagines that she had intended to say something effusively kind back to Fig. Garthy maybe should have specified that it’s fine to return compliments, now that they think of it, but they figure that it won’t hurt her to play it cool.
“I’m really excited to visit the library,” Fig continues, not deterred in the slightest by Ayda’s terse greeting. “I can’t believe you’ve worked on it for so long. It’s really amazing.”
“You know, if we were to race to the library, I would probably get there first,” Ayda says matter-of-factly, despite it being a complete non-sequitur. Garthy’s heart clenches at how uniquely Ayda her attempt at following their advice is, all sweet and awkward and heartfelt, and they are filled with renewed affection for the girl. Sure, it might not be the smoothest flirting they’ve ever seen, but Garthy thinks teaching Ayda coy smiles and playful tones would have been above their paygrade.
The only question, then, is whether the advice that Garthy did give her is working; they watch Fig to gauge her reaction to Ayda’s challenge, and they see her frown momentarily, confused. It only lasts an instant, however, before a beaming smile graces Fig’s lips.
“I bet you would, since you’ve got those dope-ass wings and everything—you’re probably, like, built for speed. It’d be cool as hell to see you in action, too.” Then, Fig coughs and looks away nervously, “I mean, everything you do is cool, so…”
Fig’s outpouring of compliments flusters Ayda so much that she accidentally singes the edges of the scroll in her hand.
“Oh,” Ayda says, jaw clenched against some emotion, “that is really nice to hear. Especially coming from you, because…” She stops mid-sentence as she seems to remember Garthy’s advice. “I mean, yes. I am very cool and would definitely beat you in a race.”
It is clearly causing her physical pain not to return the praise.
As Fig and Ayda trail awkwardly into silence, Garthy realizes that it is possible that they have miscalculated the situation entirely. When Ayda reaches out a hand to touch Fig’s arm despite the very-much-not-romantic tension in the room, Garthy realizes that it is possible that they do not know anything about romance at all, because their advice was kind of terrible.
“Fig, darling, would you excuse us for a moment?” Garthy asks, a hand placed lightly on Ayda’s shoulder to steer her into the next room.
“What’s wrong? I was about to touch Fig on the arm.”
“Yeah, I know, that’s why I pulled you out,” Garthy says, scrubbing their palm against their forehead. “Look, forget everything I told you, all right?”
“I do not understand. I followed your advice to the letter,” Ayda frowns, brow furrowed.
“No, lovey, you did great, okay?” Garthy reassures her. “I just don’t think my advice will help you all that much. Listen,” they nod at Fig, who seems to have difficulty sitting still as she waits for Garthy and Ayda’s return. Her eyes keep not-so-surreptitiously sliding over to Ayda every couple of seconds before quickly glancing elsewhere. “I think your best bet is to tell Fig how you feel, honest and straightforward-like.”
Ayda frowns. “Garthy, I would never question the validity of your wisdom, but I do not see how that is different to my behavior in any of my interactions with Fig, save for just now.”
“Yeah, love, that’s sort of the point,” Garthy says. “Fig has said about fifty words to you, and nearly all of them have been about how wonderful you are. I think the rest might have just been prepositions.” They squeeze Ayda’s shoulder. “Frankly, I don’t think there’s anything that will make that girl like you more than you just being yourself.”
“Oh,” Ayda says. “That is…very relieving to hear.” She nods once, determined, and strides back into the room with Fig.
“Fig,” Garthy hears her say, “I think you are incredible in every conceivable way. I would like it very much if you would hold my hand as we walk to the library.”
Garthy sees a face-splitting grin form on Fig’s face as she reaches her hand toward Ayda. Fingers intertwined, the pair leave the Gold Gardens and head toward the library.
“Well then,” Garthy says to themselves, “let’s see if Ayda’s strategy works on the celestial down at the bar.”

Taglist: @dailyojiromashirao, @elite-guard-hardygal (Dude I can’t wait to write these next chapters! You know why! XD), and @fandoms-fandoms-everywhere99! These are all lovely, lovely people and I adore them.
Anyway, the Masterlist, as usual, and now we go to the story!!
I really hope you all like this chapter!!

But now, with Izuku previously being Quirkless (thus, probably a weakling in Katsuki’s eyes), but ‘suddenly getting a Quirk’ and then winning against Katsuki, to boot, it probably whacked the guy real hard.
I had to talk to him after class. This kid definitely had issues. A lot of them.
And Lord knows those people are the ones I can’t resist at least attempting to help.Let’s just hope I make it out alive.
The tension in the room could be cut with a knife.
Toshin-Oji chose to cut it with words. “Well, despite the results,” All Might begins, “the MVP of this exercise is young Iida!” He proclaims, and I see why instantly.
Throughout the entire fifteen minutes, Iida had remained squarely on the training, playing the role he was assigned with as much seriousness and determination as he would approach class.
However, no one else seems to get it and shocked murmurs ring the group. I chuckle. These guys were idiots…
“Shouldn’t it be one of the heroes, instead, since they’re the winners?” The girl with dark green hair asks, brow raised in confusion.
“Hmm, valid question!” All Might replies. “Why didn’t I chose one of those two? Who has a guess?” In the following silence, I raise my hand, but Momo begins right away.
“Sir, I can tell you why.” She says, hand raised, but eyes closed in thought. “Iida embraced this challenge. He was the only one who truly adapted to his assigned role.” She says, hand still raised. I nod in agreement, but let her speak. After all, she was putting it far more eloquently into words than I could. “I’ll explain; Bakugo’s judgement was clouded by a personal grudge against Midoriya. As you pointed out earlier, launching a large-scale attack indoors was a foolish move. It could have been disastrous.”
“It was disastrous.” I mumble under my breath, arms crossed over my chest as Momo continued, not having heard me.
“Similarly, Midoriya’s attack was also poorly thought out, considering the amount of damage he received. He rendered himself helpless; not smart.” I initially grit my teeth and prepare to defend Izuku, but then take a second to think and find that, yeah, she was right. Izuku, unable to think of anything else, launched a desperate, last-ditch effort to win, but what if it hadn’t worked? It would have been a quick win for the villains if the fight had had to continue. So I deflate and listen. “As for Uraraka, she let her guard down mid-battle, and her final attack was far too reckless, given the hypothetical stakes.” Wow. Gotta hand it to Momo; she really pays attention. Everyone is looking at her in awe as she keeps speaking without opening her eyes. “If she’d treated the weapon as if it were real, she never would have used such an imprecise move.” She finally opens her eyes to look at Tenya, who still looks shell-shocked at the praise of being MVP. “Iida was fully prepared for his opponent’s arrival. He had a strategy and never lost sight of his mission to protect the dummy weapon, even if he was foiled in the end.” Tenya leans back a little hand over his heart and goofy, overwhelmed smile on his face. “Technically, the hero team won, yes, but they took advantage of the fact that this was training. They didn’t respect the spirit of the trial” I pick my jaw up off the floor and give her a thumbs up.
“Right on, Momo!” I praise. “I had a less eloquent and in-depth version of the points you made in mind.” All Might is stunned by Momo’s analysis, as is everyone else, but he recovers quickly.
“Yes, well, you overlooked a few things; young Iida could have relaxed a but during the exercise, but otherwise you nailed it!” I chuckle as he gives her a thumbs up, as well.
“One should always start with the basics and devote themselves wholeheartedly to learning. That’s the only real way to become a top hero.” I decide I like Momo a lot, grinning at her even though she can’t see it. She had a logical, sound head on her shoulders and the drive needed to accomplish her dreams. She wasn’t above helping others along the way, either, unlike Katsuki, who literally blasted everyone and everything out of his way to get to where he wanted to go.
Speaking of Katsuki, he’d been uncharacteristically silent during the whole speech Momo gave. In fact, beyond telling me to back off, he hadn’t said a word since Izuku collapsed and the training ended. Despite what he’d done, despite knowing his personality and the way he’d react if I tried to help him, I can’t help feeling a small bit worried about him.
“Now then,” All Might calls, bringing me back to reality. “time to blow this joint! Let’s move on to the next match! Think about everything you saw and discussed as you tackle this training for yourself.” He instructs and we all agree. However, I take another look at Katsuki and see that his eyes are wide. He’s not trembling, but something’s eating him alive, I can tell. I really wanted to talk to him, but have to pay attention to the drawing of the lots to see who’d go next. Toshin-Oji draws two balls again and holds them up for us to see. “These two teams will be the next to fight!” He cries. It’s team B as the heroes and team I as the villains. I look over and see the boy half-covered in ice look at the tall boy with six arms. They were the heroes.
A little ways away, Mashirao walks over to a floating pair of gloves. I blink, then remember that there’d been a girl in a school uniform completely invisible. They formed the villain team for this round. I notice for the first time that Mashirao wears a white karate gi and no shoes. Interesting. All Might tells the teams where to go, having a different building for every team so it would be fair. He even told us their names. Ice-boy was Shoto Todoroki, and I can’t help but draw the instant connection to Endeavor. Denki voices this connection and Shoto growls, but doesn’t say anything. Weird. His partner, six-armed boy, is Mezo Shoji. The invisible girl was Toru Hagakare. The teams nod and head out. I wonder how this will turn out.
The five minutes pass quick and soon enough, Shoto and Shoji are given the signal to advance. “Look alive, kids! Show us you’re the embodiment of good- -or, evil- -let’s go!” All Might declares and the hero team enters the building.
Mezo’s six arms fan out and- -whoa! He can make ears on the ends of his arms! That’s so cool! One of the ears turns into a mouth when Shoto walks over. They briefly discuss whatever intel Mezo gathered, then Shoto walks over to the wall, ice quickly leaping out and encasing the hall, creeping over the entire building! I note the discarded shoes and grimace.
“Holy crap!” I exclaim. “That’s insane! The entire area is completely frozen! The villains can’t even move!” I add, shivering at the sudden drop in temperature. The dude was good! Crazy good!
“He incapacitated them without compromising the weapon or his teammate! Take close note of his technique, students.” All Might instructs.
“Soon as I thaw out, I will.” I reply, shivering.
“He’s so strong!” Eijiro murmurs. I nod.
“Yeah. I couldn’t submerge the entire building in water even if I wanted to.” I note under my breath to him. He is about to say something when All Might accidentally cuts him off.
“The hero team wins!” He exclaims, and I look to see that Shoto has his hand on the weapon and the ice suddenly melts before Shoto turns to Mashirao, saying something to his opponent before walking back outside. Huh?! Wait...that means...
“He has two Quirks like me!” I gush. For some reason, that fact made me super happy.
“Yeah, but that guy’s kinda intimidating.” Denki says, leaning toward me a little.
“We...well, this guy got in through recommendations, so he must be good.” I reply. And to think...I would have had to compete with him and Momo if I’d gone through with the recommendation. Eesh. I wouldn’t have stood a chance!
“Moving on, time to gather ‘round and review the second match! After that, we’ll jet on over to our next battle.”
“Yessir!” We chorused. All Might then snaps his fingers.
“I have an idea!” He cheers, then points at me. “Seeing as the other member of the hero team and the villains hardly saw any action, why not have the next match be a kind-of rematch, with Yamada taking young Todoroki’s place on the hero team against Ojiro and Hagakure? They’d be the next matchup, then we’d draw lots for the next round afterwards.” No one argues and I gulp. At least Shoto wasn’t fighting this time...but now I’d have to fight, no holds barred.
Oh, boy…
“Now,” All Might begins and I am snapped from my thoughts. “Obviously, there wasn’t much fighting, but a quick resolution is often preferable to a drawn-out fight.” He says. “Once again, the MVP is not one of the winners. It is young Hagakure! Can anyone guess why?” I raise my hand before Momo can give another speech.
“Sir, I think it’s because Toru had, like Tenya, developed a viable strategy to help her teammate and win the round. Though her team weren’t the victors, Hagakure used her Quirk to their advantage and wasn’t afraid to do what it took to ensure victory.” I say. All Might gives me a thumbs up.
“Very good, Yamada! Precisely my reasoning!” Toru’s gloves are up in what I think would be a gesture to hide her face were it visible. I give her a thumbs up and she shyly gives me one back.
=#=#=#=#=
“So...I guess I don’t really have a strategy here.” Mezo confesses once our five minute planning session starts. I gulp and nod.
“Oh, don’t worry; I’ve barely any idea what I’m doing, either. Um...Not to be rude, but your Quirk is fairly obvious- -and really cool!- -so, ah, if it’s okay, let me briefly sum up my Quirks.” I feel a lot less flustered when Mezo nods encouragingly, “I got both my parents’ Quirks and can control Water and Earth, but am a lot better at Water.” Mezo nods.
“Interesting, but...I thought the Yamada Senseis were your parents.” I squirm a little and sigh. No use hiding it.
“Well, they’re my godparents.” I explain briefly. Mezo flinches, picking up the subtext easily.
“I’m sorry.” I smile and shrug. Really, it honestly...it honestly doesn’t hurt that much anymore. As sad as this is to say, I was so young when I lost my parents, I can hardly remember what they look like. It’s almost like the Yamadas are my biological parents.
“Don’t be. It happened a long time ago. Is it okay if I continue about my Quirks?” I ask politely. He nods.
“Of course.”
“There’s not much left. Mom- -Mrs. Yamada- -taught me a neat trick with my Earth Quirk; tracking. I can use the vibrations in the Earth to locate and track people when I concentrate, but not as well indoors. In other words, I’ll have to rely on you to get a clearer indication. Best I can do is general area and floor number.” Mezo nods.
“I can add to that, no problem.” I grin and stomp twice, sending out a wave of vibrations.
“I think they’re about two thirds of the way down the fourth floor away from us, so maybe we should go in on the third floor on this side to make sure we can surprise them.” I explain. Mezo nods again, but before he can reply verbally, All Might’s voice rings out for us to get moving, and an alarm sounds. I gulp. “Let’s go.” I mumble. I lead the way to the fire escape, a bit flustered and confused. How exactly had I ended up as team leader? Mezo is really nice, though, and I have a feeling he’d speak up if he didn’t like my ideas. As soon as we’re in, Mezo extends his arms and hones in on their location using his six ears. He then shifts them back to hands.
“Upper left end, and the invisible girl probably has her clothes off to sneak up on us.” I snort at the idea that Mashirao was paired with a naked girl he couldn’t see. I wonder how he’s taking it. I feel bad I didn’t watch their side of the match last time.
“Okay, so this will be simple. I have enough feedback from the vibration trick to at least tell where she is. As long as we know, we can react accordingly.” I pass a bathroom and gather water. Okay. Now I had a weapon. Good. I take a breath and keep moving. Every few steps, I’d check to see if I could get a better trace on Toru. So far, though, nothing. Then, I finally get a fairly clear sense of where she is. She was just around the corner. I grab my capture tape and grin. She didn’t know I knew where she was. Since she was so close, I could even tell her stance, leaning against the wall, waiting for us to pass her so she could do a sneak attack. I let us get level with her before grabbing her wrists suddenly, yanking them down and looping the capture tape around them.
“Hey, what?” She squeaks. “No fair! How’d you know?” I smile.
“Well, I have an Earth Quirk I can use to track you using vibrations. Sorry, Toru.” I explain. I hear a huff as I keep moving. We had to get past Mashirao next, then we could get to the weapon.
“I can handle Ojiro.” Mezo whispers, using his arm to form a mouth close to my ear. I barely refrain from flinching at the sudden voice in my ear and nod.
“Sounds good. I’ll focus on getting to the weapon and ending the round.”
“Right.” He agrees and we share a nod. Mashirao gets into a stance as I enter, quickly followed by Mezo. I grin and use the water to make a rod and prepare to vault over Mashirao.
“You two aren’t getting by me.” Mashirao says firmly. My grin turns into a smirk.
“We’ll see.” I then use the pole to launch at him, my feet connecting with his tail. I then extend the pole and push off it to apply more pressure to Mashirao’s tail, propelling myself over him and onto the ground inches from the weapon while Mezo seamlessly takes my place, restraining Mashirao easily in his six-armed embrace. I touch the weapon as I stand. “Sorry, Mashirao.” I murmur sheepishly. After all, he, once again, didn’t get to do much. He sighs.
“Don’t be sorry. We all did our best.” He says, but I can tell he’s upset.
“A resounding victory for the hero team!” All Might exclaims over the PA system.
“Maybe we can spare some time?” I propose. “I want to get a bit better at hand-to-hand combat and you seem to know your stuff.” Mashirao nods and I swear he’s blushing just a little.
“Oh, well, I guess. I’m not sure how much I can teach you, but I can try.” I grin.
“Great!” We exit the building and make our way back to the discussion room, lining up and facing the rest of our class. Eijiro gives me a thumbs up as All Might declares me the MVP and explains that I was the one to initiate planning and tells the class that my plan was solid, easily adaptable to the situation and worked well against the opponents’ Quirks. I blush and bite my lip. I had no idea what I was doing and just tried to think of a way to counter their abilities as best I could. Mezo was the one that restrained Mashirao and allowed me to grab the weapon. If Mashirao had been able to fight, I don’t know how it would have turned out.
Regardless, it was neat and the class seemed to agree so I let it slide. After all, in the months to come, we’d all have moments to shine.
The other battles seemed to go very quickly and soon enough we’re outside. All Might grins. “That’s a wrap!” He proclaims. “Super work! You really stepped up to the plate and we didn’t really have any major injuries except for Midoriya. You should be proud! Excellent first day of training all around!” All Might gives us a thumbs up. The green-haired girl raises her hand.
“It’s nice to hear some encouraging words after our homeroom class.” She says. Everyone shudders. I chuckle. They just had to get used to Mom’s ‘tough love’ personality. “Mrs. Yamada was kind of a buzz kill...no offense, Takara.” I laugh.
“It’s fine. You all just have to give her time to get used to you all. She’s really not that bad.” I reply, smiling. Denki raises a brow.
“You’ve also had your whole life with her.” He points out. I roll my eyes, but All Might continues before I can reply.
“I’m happy to bring such staggering positivity to my Alma Mater!” He cheers, then salutes. “That’s all for now, folks! I should go and check on young Midoriya’s progress! Now, watch how a pro exits; like he’s got somewhere to be!” He exclaims, sprinting down the exit tunnel and kicking up a fairly strong breeze in the process. I chuckle.
“That’s All Might for yah.” I muse.
“Yeah. That is a hero!” Denki murmurs in awe. Mashirao frowns.
“I’ll never be able to move that fast.” He moans. I shrug.
“All Might’s also been at this a long time. You’ll probably get way faster than you are now if you keep training.” He smiles.
“Yeah, You’re right!” I then walk towards the tunnel.
“I think I’ll join All Might after I get some food. I’m starving!” Eijiro jogs after me.
“Wait up! I’ll come, too!” I blink. I meant to go alone to talk to All Might about how he handled Izuku’s round of the exercise. Guess it’ll have to wait. I grin.
“Sure! I was gonna head to Lunch Rush then go to the infirmary after I change. Meet me outside the changing rooms, okay?” Eijiro nods.
“Okay!”
=#=#=#=#=
“This lesson was intense, huh?” Eijiro muses, frowning into his curry with extra beef. I sigh chewing a bite of beef oden thoughtfully.
“Yeah. I get why it’s important to learn fighting early on, but that was...something else.”
“I hope Midoriya’s okay.” Eijiro mumbles. “He was pretty burnt and his arm was definitely broken.” I nod.
“I trust Recovery Girl to help him.” I reply. “I think he’ll be okay in no time!”
“Do you think your Mom is gonna teach a little more, or are we done?”
“I heard from Dad that Mom has something going on at her agency today, so we’re done.”
“Oh.” Silence falls between us and we finish our food. “Wanna go see Midoriya?” I didn’t want to see just how bad he was right now, so I shake my head.
“No. I think I want to talk to Katsuki instead. That boy needs to get his head screwed straight.” I reply. I had also changed my mind because I couldn’t talk to All Might the way I wanted to in front of Eijiro without giving away that not only was I the daughter of a Pro Couple, but have also formed a Niece-Uncle relationship with the world’s top hero, All Might, on top of that. Eijiro already thought I was far above him just by who my parents were. I didn’t want to see what damage I could do by telling him about Toshin-Oji. Eijiro looks at me like I’m insane. “I can handle him. Be back to the classroom in a few minutes, okay?” He sighs, and I happened to catch the hothead stalking toward the exit. Eijiro gives me a nervous ‘good luck’ thumbs up and continues down to the classroom. “Hey, Katsuki. Can we talk?” I ask. He glares at me.
“Shove off.” He growls. I roll my eyes and tug him into a side room, closing the door. “What the hell?!” He spits, threatening me with those small explosions. I huff.
“Look, you’re talented and perhaps I overreacted just a smidge when I confronted you. For that I apologize. But I don’t take back the anger or what I said about you throwing a tantrum.” Katsuki glares at me.
“You better back up, Yamada. We aren’t friends and I couldn’t care less about what you have to say, so get out of my way.” I glare at him, rolling my eyes and continuing to block the door.
“But you do care about losing to Izuku. He’s a talented kid. You’ve just been throwing him down so much you missed a lot about him.” I surmise. “I can’t tell you about his Quirk, because I don’t know the details and it’s not my place, but I can tell you that he’s smart as a whip and can turn what he learns into strategies almost in an instant. You were great at combat, but failed to think ahead. That’s the only way Izuku beat you. You had him on the ropes in terms of raw power, since Izuku can’t use his without paying a steep price, but Izuku was a lot better at thinking ahead.” Katsuki grabs my tie and hauls me face-to-face with his livid red eyes.
“You shut your damn mouth!” He growls. I glare at him.
“You want to be a pro, right? You’re not a pro yet, not by a long shot. So, you should shut your damn mouth and learn everything you can at this school. If you do that, if you really take in everything and apply it, you’ll be what you want to be.” I reply. Katsuki looks stunned, so I take the moment to walk away. He had a lot to think about. Besides, I wanted to pop back into the classroom and say bye before I go find dad and go home.
I don’t hear or see Katsuki leave the room I’d tugged him into, being too far away.
That, and I saw Izuku heading into the classroom, arm in a sling and looking nervous and tired. I chuckle and jog to catch up, hearing Eijiro call out in greeting. “Man, I don’t know what you were saying during your match, but you were all fired up, huh?” Eijiro’s saying as I enter.
“Yeah. It was pretty intense.” I add and Izuku is increasingly nervous at all this attention.
“But you held your own against Bakugo!” The boy I now know as Hanta Sero from the training, with tape in his elbows he can shoot out as his Quirk, says. “He’s super strong!”
“You did a great job dodging!” Mina exclaims, part of the now group of people surrounding Izuku.
“You really turned up in the first match so none of us held back in our rounds, either.” Everyone nods. The boy with the suit or armor, Yuga Aoyama, speaks up next, leaning out a little from his desk.
“You were far from elegant, but I suppose- -”
“Your dodging was like ‘whoa’!” Mina interjects happily, bouncing in excitement. I chuckle. What’s with her and dodging?
“Hey, I’m Eijiro Kirishima. We’ve been going over training results while you were in recovery.” Eijiro says. Hanta nods.
“Hi, I’m Hanta Sero.”
“More importantly, I’m Yuga- -”
“I’m Mina Ashido and I just gotta say your dodging was awesome!” Mina interrupts again. I snort and laugh. Seriously, what’s with her and this fixation on dodging? The green-haired girl, Tsuyu Asui, or Su as she likes to be called, is next to introduce herself. (Her Quirk makes her as close to a frog as a human can be, which I think is kinda cool!)
The big guy, Rikido Sato, leans in next. “Hey. Sato.” He says simply, pointing to his chest. Izuku looks flustered, but kinda happy.
“H-hey, guys.” He says. Suddenly, that purple-ball-haired creep, who was somehow paired with Momo and spent the entire time drooling over her outfit, Mineta, lunges up to Izuku’s eyeline.
“And my name’s Mineta!” He exclaims. I scoot away from him and laugh with the others.
“Where the heck did you pop out of?” Eijiro asks. I then move a little further into the classroom and spot Fumikage Tokoyami, the boy with the bird head. He had a really unique Quirk: a shadowy thing that came out of his body and helped him fight. I think he calls it Dark Shadow.
“Too noisy.” He muses, nodding to the group. I chuckle.
“Yeah, but they’re fun to hang around.” I reply and smile at Mashirao, who was standing next to the girl next to me, Kyoka Jiro, with the plugs of earbuds coming off her ears to let her eavesdrop and hear really quiet sounds, who scoffs.
“We’ll see.” I roll my eyes, but Tenya suddenly runs over.
“Tokoyami, stop using that desk as a chair! Get off of it this instant!” He exclaims, gesturing wildly with his arms. I laugh.
“Tenya, c’mon. He’s not doing anything wrong.” I point out.
“Yeah. You really need to chill, dude.” Kyoka adds.
“You’re carrying a lot of tension.” Mashirao points out. Tenya sighs.
“No one understands…” He groans, then stand straight and starts gesturing again. “I simply cannot condone actions that disrespect these desks! Not when great men and women, our upperclassmen, once used them!” I can’t help but burst out laughing.
“Tenya, dude, what makes you think they didn’t use these desks as chairs?” I counter. By now, we’ve drawn the attention of the rest of the class that’s in the room. Tenya groans, but pushes his glasses up and sighs in resignation.
“I...hadn’t considered that. Thank you, Yamada.” I wave it aside.
“Hey, don’t sweat it. Look, call me Takara, kay? Only fair, since I call everyone by their first name.” I reply. This was the second time I had reminded him, but it was okay. Tenya sticks his hand out for a handshake. Good Lord, was he serious?!
“Fair enough!” He says and I, restraining laughter, shake his hand to confirm we were on first name terms. Fumikage sighs.
“You two are also noisy.” He groans. Just then, Denki and Ochaco enter from the other door, Denki asking Ochaco where she likes to eat as they pass the doorway.
“Anything sweet.” She replies politely, then spots Izuku and jogs over. “Hey, Deku!” She calls, smiling. “Why didn’t you heal your injuries?” She asks. Izuku blushes and stammers.
“We-well, it has to do with how much stamina I’m using.” He explains. I wince.
“Yikes.”
“Stamina?” Ochacho asks. I nod.
“Yeah. Your body needs energy to heal, right? I bet that’s how Recovery Girl’s Quirk works; using your body’s stamina to kick-start the healing process.” Izuku nods.
“Yeah!” He then looks at Katsuki’s empty desk. Huh. Where’d he- -crap. He just went home? Seriously?
“Um, Uraraka?” Izuku asks, point to the desk. “Where’s Kacchan?” She raises a brow.
“I don’t know. I haven’t seen him.” She replies with a shrug. I chuckle nervously.
“I talked to him a little. Just about tips for improving next time and how he should lay off and focus on learning everything he can. I didn’t mean to make him leave, but I guess- -hey! Izuku, wait! You shouldn’t be running with your arm!” I call as Izuku sprints down the hall. I take off after him. “Stop!” But he won’t. Realizing that it was probably best I didn’t talk to Katsuki yet again, I stay and just listen. If Izuku needs me, I’ll be right here.
“Kacchan! Wait up!” Izuku calls.
“What?!”
“I need to tell you something. Maybe then, you’ll understand what’s going on. I wasn’t hiding my Quirk from you. It was given to me by someone else recently.” I pale. Shit! What is Izuku doing?! “But I can’t tell you who I got it from, so don’t ask!” Izuku sighs. That was a very risky thing to say. Especially to someone who doesn’t like Katsuki. “Sounds crazy, I know; like something out of a comic book, only it’s real! The thing is, I don’t really have control over this power yet. I haven’t figured out how to make it my own, but I’m trying. That’s why I didn’t want to use it against you in the exercise, but in the end, it was the only way I had a chance of winning. I’ve still got a lot to learn, I know that. That’s why I’m here. You’ll see; I’ll work until I have full control of this borrowed Quirk, and I’ll finally beat you with my own power!” The silence lingers, filled with tension.
“How dumb do you think I am?!” Katsuki growls. “‘Borrowed power?! Don’t talk to me like I’m an idiot! I already got that lecture from that teacher’s brat!” I flinch. He didn’t take it the way I meant it! Crap! “You already made a fool outta me in that damn training exercise. So, did you come here to rub it in?! I lost, and to make matters worse it was to you! I came in first in the exam, but that’s not enough! When I was watching that ice guy, I realized I couldn’t beat him in a head-to-head fight!” The longer he’d talked, the angrier and more emotional Katsuki sounded. I might have to intervene if he gets violent. “Crap!” He screams. “I even agree with what those girls said, even that damn brat! My attack was so stupid and I wasn’t thinking! Damn it! Damn it! Damn it! Damn it!” I peek out to see Katsuki almost crying and Izuku standing there in shock. Katsuki then clenches his fist. “Enjoy that win, Deku! You won’t get another! I’m just getting started! Got that?! I’m gonna end up the number one hero, no matter what!” Katsuki then pivots and walks away, wiping his eyes. “You’ll never beat me again, you bastard. Don’t even try!” Izuku exhales and relaxes, but before I can leave my spot, All Might sprints past me, startling me.
“There you are!” He roars, running right for Katsuki. “Bakugo, I found you!” He then pants a little as he places his hands on Katsuki’s shoulders. “Just so you know, pride is an important attribute to have, but while you certainly have the ability to become a pro hero, there’s still plenty you have to learn!” I almost laugh. All Might was trying, but I doubt it’ll get through to Katsuki. After all, he took my advice as a lecture and didn’t take a single word to heart. Sure enough, Katsuki stiffens.
“Let go of me, All Might. Right now.” However, his voice was similar to the way he’d told me to ‘shove off’ when I barked at him in the monitoring room during the training exercise. He glares over his shoulder at All Might. “Save your speeches. I’ll be more famous than you and I’ll do it without your help.” All Might flinches, stunned.
“Uh...right.” He murmurs, letting Bakugo walk away.
That kid wasn’t over what happened today. Not by a mile. But, I’d do what I could to help him out. Katsuki is one tough customer, but there’s a lot of potential there. He just has to stop wanting to blast and fight everything and getting pissed off at anything that goes wrong in his eyes. I guess I gotta add him to the list of people I’m trying to help. It seems like it gets longer every day, but that’s what comes with being a hero, right?
I readily accept the challenge!

A Defense of North
First let me say everyone is entitled to their opinion, and I'm not bashing anyone for feeling a certain way. I just want to have a dialogue/analysis about a character in a game that I've quickly fallen in love with. Feel free to call me out on any misinformation or any contradictions that I may make. This is all for the sake of fun character exploration and writing praise/critique, so don't take things too seriously. I also want to acknowledge my bias, since I adore this particular character and the archetype that she embodies. Especially in war stories.
Now, I've noticed North has gotten some pretty strong (typically negative) reactions in a lot of the fandom. I get why she wouldn't be everyone's favorite, since she is one side of an extreme and does react on emotion more than rational thought. That being said the outright hatred she gets is shocking to me. I've seen people calling her trash and wanting her to die, and I'm interested in getting to the bottom of why she gets these intense reactions from so many people. It makes me wonder if I'm the one who missed something, haha. Please offer me rebuttals or explanations, because I'm legitimately curious. Especially given what we know of her background.
North is revealed to be an android who "worked" at the Eden Club. What we know that to mean is a sex slave who gets their memories erased. And who is she made to serve? Humans. We also learn from her that she'd been at Jericho for about a month. I haven't looked back at her case file in the police station, so I don't remember the exact dates, but going on her words (and the fact the cops are still actively pursuing her case) we know she hasn't had her freedom for very long. It should come as no surprise then that she's hurt, angry, and ready to fight any chance she gets. What I saw was a character who was in pain, and I immediately felt for her. The severity and how recent her previous situation was doesn't seem to be acknowledged by many of the people who don't like her, which is definitely something I wonder if they don't take into account. I also have to wonder how better she'd be received if she was crying and timid as opposed to bold and reactive. Or even male, but the latter is a discussion about demographics and how people respond to sex, gender roles, and gender identity (meaning not a topic for today.) I can't speak for everyone, but what I've gathered in my life people are prefer those who vent their pain either through tears or silence rather than anger and words. Even if the reasons for reacting that way are completely valid, and I think North is valid in her emotions. We can't ignore someone's pain just because they don't express it in a way that we prefer. If I was in her situation I'd be beyond pissed and likely react in the same way.
Continuing on, I want to look at her positive qualities, which many seem to ignore. The woman is selfless and passionate. She not only supports the cause, she lives it, breathes it, and will stop at nothing to achieve her goal of freedom as well as justice for androids. She loves her people and her ideals more than anyone even herself, and isn't afraid to make sacrifices. She is willing to die (at Jericho during the raid, during the fight at the camp, and gently questions Markus on why he as the leader and beacon of hope for those androids would risk his life to save hers) and if you go the pacifist route and get results she sticks around to help - not sure if there's an option for her not to - proving she actually does care for for android rights than her grudge against humanity.) She's courageous, never afraid to be the first into the fray, put herself at risk, or (as mentioned above) die. She's also unabashedly supportive. Once Markus arrives at Jericho she's almost always in the same scene with him. Either praising, giving council, encouraging him, and asking him to lead. She's pretty much attached to his hip, and that's good, because we can see she believes in him, and isn't afraid to help. She's also responsible. In the event Markus fails to benefit Jericho, she as one of the four (Simon, Josh, and Lucy are the others) who actively supported and trusted him assumes command of the revolution. She helped bring that guy in, and now she wants to fix the problems he created herself in order to protect the other androids. She's not a "bad" person at all in my opinion. Bad people don't have those qualities.
I did admit my bias earlier, so this is where I concede that North does have bad traits. Even though I know where it comes from, and I think she's justified to a point, her dislike of humans is bigoted and isn't any different from the humans who hate androids for existing. She's able to share memories with Markus and see how nice Carl was, but never really changes or discusses that with him. We see her relationship meter go up, but that's it. Not any real development there, but I'm not sure if it's a North problem or a writing issue. Then we have her being very reactive. I said she was an extreme earlier, and I meant it. A leader needs to be quick on their feet and decisive but also balanced and analytical. I worry that she, while driven, selfless, and passionate she would be too quick to jump into a fight rather than understanding diplomacy is sometimes just as good a route. Nothing's wrong with fighting when you have to, but not every issue needs to turn the world into a battlefield. I don't think she'd make as good a leader as Markus, but I think she's the next best thing Jericho has. There are some who think North will be very insistent if you don't agree with her, but so will Josh, Simon, Hank, and any other character in any other choice-based game. Their job is to sway the player by making them question their decisions. She's no more annoying than anyone else. She just suffers from "Secondary Character in a Story Driven Game Syndrome" in that regard.
That about covers it I suppose. I love this character to bits, and as I've typed this I've come to three main reasons why I think people may not like her. The first, is that she just doesn't resonate with some, and that's fine. We all have those characters we just don't click with. The second is, that people don't like how she expresses herself even if they don't necessarily disagree with her, and the third is that she's really our only romantic option for Markus, and that people are frustrated and taking that out on her. Anyway I'm always open to discussions and am super interested in whether you agree or disagree with me. I just love the game, so even if you don't wanna talk about this particular topic or don't feel comfortable responding where the world can see, send me a PM and let's chat. :)

Note
I absolutely adore your thoughts on the psychological health within the SLBP characters! If you don’t mind, could you scale MidC, DtL, and IkeSen (pick whichever game you want!), too? If it’s not too much to ask ☺️
Hello, Precious! Let’s do all three!
Again, purely for fun! And, like the last time, there will be SPOILERS!
0=unstable, 50=borderline, 100=normal
MidCin, you’re up!
Louis (65):
Tsunderes, kuuderes and yanderes, by design, are not normal to begin with, because their logic only makes sense to themselves.
Louis being both a kuudere and a yandere are what take his score down.
Frequently thinking it to himself, and sometimes saying it out loud, Louis has obsessive thoughts about wanting to keep his love interest to himself, and fantasizes about keeping her somewhere where only he can see.
He also thinks that acting like a frigid ass, like the nobles, will somehow save her from the nobles.
Even though Louis falls deeply in love with the princess, he will also lie to her face without a hint of hesitation, undermine her hard work, and jeopardize the stability of the monarchy.
He also entertains a suicidal fantasy, and attempts to see it through.
Sid (80):
Even though he lies for a living, Sid praises honesty when it comes to his inner circle.
He has no qualms teasing Louis left and right, because he’s made it known to Louis that he wants to save him from himself.
Finding himself trapped in a loveless engagement, Sid makes sure that his fiancée knows ahead of time that he doesn’t love her and never will. He gives her the chance to break it off, even making sure that she understands that he will take other lovers, and is only with her to get information about her father.
Because Sid always has to be “on,” in order to take advantage of any kind of situation, so that he gets the information he needs to do his job, Sid sometimes has a problem with reigning it in and just being himself– and not his trickster alter ego.
This causes communication problems between him and princess, but Sid always knows how to smooth it over.
In every case where parents are involved, in MidCin, Sid has the most positive and supporting relationship with his.
He is close to his adopted father, who always has his back, and builds a positive relationship with his estranged parents.
Giles (70):
Anything– and I do mean A N Y T H I N G ! –that the princess does, whether positive or negative reflects on Giles. And I mean that the princess’ reactions reflect on Giles as a person and on his capacity as a Chamberlain who knows what he’s doing.
We all give him crap for it, but one small mishap from princess could realistically cost Giles his entire life’s work, since the first thing out of anyone’s mouth would be to question why she wasn’t taught and trained better– which isn’t Leo’s job, but Giles’.
And “well, I told her not to!” isn’t a valid answer. It’s Giles’ job to ensure.
Understandably, we can see why he has a vested interest in breathing down Princess’ neck, all the time. It’s also why he’s always so stressed out, and persnickety.
To add to that, his family life is complicated, leaving him depressed and estranged.
Giles is also sickly, and prone to bouts of fever, so his plate is quite full.
He works himself to the bone, and cant even get a decent amount of rest due to both lack of time, and a weak body.
Fortunately, Giles’ strong character keeps him running, even we he wants nothing more than to crawl into bed and cuddle up with his cat.
Always able to be depended on, one would never know from looking at him that he’s hiding so much turmoil inside.
Alyn (75):
His biggest “quirk” is that he hates tomatoes. who can blame him
He’s pretty damn normal, aside from his random and intense one-sided feud with his twin brother, Leo.
Alyn knows that his brother needs help, but doesn’t really do much to facilitate that, beyond throwing a few words of encouragement at his brother’s girlfriend.
His attitude toward Leo’s anguish is basically the embodiment of the phrase: “like pouring water on a drowning man.”
However, when he’s needed, Alyn will be there in a pinch, ready to make good on his promise to protect.
Although physically strong, he can be a bit of a pushover under the right conditions.
Leo (50):
You would think for someone who has women climbing into trebuchets in order to launch themselves at him, that Leo would be a little smoother than he is.
What brings his score down so low is that Leo’s backstory isn’t just a backstory– it’s right there with him in the present.
He (and Alyn) experience a trauma so deep that it continues into adulthood.
As such, Leo entertains the dangerous idea of pre-meditated murder in the hope of avenging his family, not realizing that he’s also contributing to its destruction.
Byron (65):
It’s supposed to be looked at as a way to get to know him, but not being aware of one’s own feelings– positive, negative, or neutral –and questioning whether it is “okay” to feel them, or express them, is neither normal nor cute.
Byron is also given to whims, either not giving a damn at all what the nobles say, or purposefully putting them in their place with ostentatious displays of affection.
Byron is very sweet to his romantic interest, but is also coldly indifferent to others who are close to him.
He understands that he wields incredible power, but he’s not above making his own brother (Nico), another king (Alyn), and a close friend (Louis) essentially beg on their hands and knees before he’ll lift a finger to help them.
He can also be unnervingly detached, such as when he’s attacked in broad daylight and just shrugs it off while his best friend throws himself bodily in the way to block a sword.
Byron may not like his father, but the apple didn’t exactly fall far from the tree, either.
They may not be exactly alike, as one wouldn’t expect them to be– they’re two different people –but he is definitely Gerald Wagner’s son, by blood and to some extent, personality.
Nico (65):
When the only thing that stops you from murdering a man in the middle of the woods is that your brother and his friend arrived just in time to prevent it, because they didn’t have much trouble following the trail of other people’s blood that you’ve been leaving, have a seat because you’re not normal.
Nico started out his young life as the bastard son of a king, who was forced by circumstances outside of his control to survive on the streets.
Even when he was taken in by his brother, Nico was forced to live in two different worlds: in the light as someone that everyone in the castle can see and here, and know that he’s there, but also in the shadows, as his relationship to the royal family was still kept secret.
In that sense, the sins of the father were carried on by one of his sons, Byron, who wanted to rescue his brother, but also treated him to some extent like the nobles who had chased Nico and his mother from the castle.
Nico says himself that no one really takes him seriously about anything, and that his opinions don’t matter.
Albert is very comfortable with making Nico his whipping boy right in front of Byron.
Byron, for his part, barely ever defends his brother.
All of this can’t be easy for Nico, who confesses to the first person he crushes on.
Not only that, he goes way out of his way, almost killing himself, to protect the person who truly loves him, and risks displacing a monarchy to ensure that he can maintain his relationship.
Albert (75):
Albert’s flippant nature stems from the fact that no one’s checked his ass, before Princess.
If not for her, he would continue on forever, bowing and scraping before his king, without realizing that there can be loyalty beyond fealty, and devotion that transcends admiration and patriotism.
Through love, Albert comes to understand trust and forgiveness, and how to handle one’s emotions.
Albert likes to plan for every situation, but as a tsundere, he is also reactionary.
Robert (65):
Robert’s idea of dealing with the past is never talking about it, ever, which is neither helpful nor healthy.
He also likes to literally run away from his problems, and is just fine with up and leaving at a moment’s notice, with no regard for how that might potentially unnerve, frighten, or traumatize another person– in his case, a group of four specific individuals, all still technically children, who were close to him: Byron, Albert, Nico, and Princess.
While mature in every other regard, Robert is prone to lashing out verbally when people try to talk about his past, even in private.
He also uses stone walling and pretending the incident didn’t happen, as defense mechanisms.
He will also actively ignore any past connections until doing otherwise suits his purposes, leaving the people he used to know in the awkward position of having to guess at whether they’re supposed to try to reach out to him, or go along with acting like strangers.
Now for DtL!
Todo (30):
Todo, first name Heisuke, is the identical twin of Kyo.
Separated at birth, Todo grew up as the wealthy little lord (bocchama) of a crime-ridden family.
At some point, that house fell, and Todo would frequently dream that was in a futuristic place.
In one dream, he discovered that he had a twin, Kyo.
In his dreams, Todo would visit his brother regularly, and that’s when he realized that it wasn’t a dream at all!
Todo possesses the ability to travel across time, backwards and forwards, without restriction– and what he was seeing in his “dreams” was actually real.
Oh, and he’s also a pathokinetic empath who can control the emotions and physical well-being of others, most notably, Kyo.
Apparently, the knowledge that one has powers such as these will mess a person right up, and Todo proceeds to lose his damn mind.
Because time means nothing to him, death and life also mean nothing to him, since all he would have to do is press fast forward or rewind or whatever he does, and “fix” everything.
It would also mean, if he chose to, he could go forward in time and know everything.
Living in an era where superstitions are still deeply rooted in the culture, Todo oscillates between understanding that Kyo is a completely separate person from himself, and thinking that Kyo is literally a part of him that was split off.
Kyo (70):
Pretty normal until he takes his NOTICE ME, SENPAI! act straight into outright threatening others to stay away from the woman he’s crushing on.
He is skeptical and hard-working.
Handsy, clingy and uncomfortably honest when drunk, Kyo is otherwise a good-natured person who enjoys helping others.
Yamazaki (85):
Yamazaki is as popular with the ladies as any other ikemen, but he is also insecure and occasionally distrusting of other’s intentions, particularly around women in the RLD, whom he suspects want to use him (he’s half-right).
He also lets Okita get away with far too much, but he also possesses the power to lay Okita out like a picnic blanket, if he wanted to, so maybe it’s a good thing that Yamazaki chooses to let so many of Okita’s shenanigans slide.
An unrepentant hand fetishist, Yamazaki may look and act innocent, but he’s a beast in the bedroom.
Saito (80):
Saito is secretive and mysterious, but also kind and helpful.
He always keeps his promises, and trains his MC in self-defense so that she has an added layer of protection in an unfamiliar place, beyond ‘I know a bunch of samurai, so don’t mess with me.’
However, he can also be distant and secretive in a negative way, such as getting himself a fiancée when he’s still in love with his MC.
Haru/Kirisato (45):
That moment when the year is 1864 and The Silence of the Lambs novel won’t be published until 124 years later, and you’re talking about someone else’s skin belonging to you– while being completely, creepily serious –is how you know you’re not normal and never will be.
That and the fact that he’s very firmly in yandere territory.
Haru lives a double life as a spy, hitman, and courtesan, who seems to be keeping it all together, until he meets his love interest.
Keiki (60):
Not only does Keiki start out depressed, his own MC makes sure that he can barely climb his way back out, by actively traumatizing him when he needed her the most.
Keiki still carries the pain of watching a friend die in front of him, and as such, dislikes anything that reminds him that beauty– like life –is fleeting.
He is also surprisingly trusting, once he lets his guard down, and very fragile once his trust has been broken.
Kondo (90):
His biggest flaw is that he has no sense of direction, and that he loves animals, but they don’t love him,  AND THAT HE DOESN’T HAVE A ROUTE!
Sakamoto (85):
Stubborn and brusque, Sakamoto has a preternatural intuition that has saved him and The Exclusionists more than once.
Too bad it didn’t help in that alley!
Sakamoto is typically chased down and pestered by women, and to that end tries to make himself inconspicuous as much as possible, which is easy to do when you have flaming red hair.
He is thick-headed, but also sensitive, playful but considerate.
Okubo (85):
A graduate of the Byron Wagner School for Robots, Okubo doesn’t know what love is, but wants you to show him.
But look out, because he is chock full of naughty kinks, such as being a very frisky and bold drunk, playing footsie, an unashamed ear kissing and biting fetish, and dominating during sex.
Okubo is very observant when he’s not reading at the speed of light, and his anger is prone to his whims– sometimes he briefly says what is bothering him, and other times he is quite angsty and demanding.
Although he often vague, he is a sincere person.
He is also forgetful, and has no qualms about mooching off of others.
Katsura (90):
Energetic and suave, calculating and capable, Katsura is surprisingly sensitive.
Unable to leave others alone when they need him, he even goes so far as to politely ignore the fact that his former friend’s wife has been coming on to him for years, all because he doesn’t know how to say ‘no,’ without hurting her feelings.
Comfortably open about his hair fetish.
Okita (55):
Okita manages to be both gullible and naïve, which are not mutually exclusive.
His score is low because he is a yandere. He doesn’t find it odd in the slightest that the first thing to pop into in his mind is orchestrating another man’s death, rather than explaining the situation.
Because of his illness, Okita is understandably depressed and anxious, causing him to react to situations in ways that a healthy person wouldn’t.
He is also intensely loyal, and finds that a life spent living without the people he’s close to, is no life at all.
Hijikata (75):
Hijikata likes to take on more than he can chew, but at the same time, doing exactly that frustrates him. He’s super stressed, but finds it difficult to say no.
Like his real-life counterpart, Hijikata believes that someone must go down with the ship, and he has sworn undying loyalty to the Shinsengumi and the shogun, alike.
Because of his workload, and the fact that he is a light sleeper, Hijikata spends his days running on fumes, barely able to get any shut-eye, until he finds his MC.
Although his devotion to Kondo and Keiki is unshakable, Hijikata folds like a cheap suit when Kyo slides up to him and tells him to break up with his MC.
Doesn’t give a damn about anyone knowing that he likes women’s accessories, and wants to dress Yamazaki in women’s clothes.
Yuki (90):
Gender-fluid, bi-sexual Yuki is almost always bubbly and positive.
However, he is not above threatening others when he sees the need, as he doesn’t take kindly at all to having to watch the woman he likes be with a man whom he feels doesn’t deserve her.
His kimono shop is a legitimate business, but also a front where one can buy guns, swords and yes– smoke bombs!
He sometimes pretends to be drunk to get information, or further the romance of his love interest and her chosen partner.
He is stronger than Hijikata and Sakamoto. Combined.
Yuki also has sword skills that make Saito weep.
Takasugi (55):
Retroactively forced into the kuudere box, Takasugi is now a kuu/tsun mix of volatile angst and depression, often using silence as a weapon just as much as his angry retorts.
Takasugi knows that his illness is getting the best of him, and uses others where he cannot succeed on his own.
Stubborn and prideful, Takasugi just wants to be loved, but doesn’t know how to be straightforward about it.
Your turn, IkeSen!
Nobunaga (75):
Nobunaga has inexhaustible trust and faith in his inner circle, and rather than treat them like lesser lords, he treats them like family.
Even as an adult, he still experiences the trauma of a failed assassination attempt, and cannot sleep comfortable until he meets his MC.
He is stubborn about his feelings, denying them and excusing them away, until they become so blatant that he can’t help but act on them.
Ieyasu (55):
Hard-headed and resistant, Ieyasu has a hard time letting others care for him. Quick to try to prove himself, Ieyasu is prove to bouts of seeking vengeance even when the situation is in control.
Obsessed with affirmations of love, Ieyasu is several different dere-types, most notably a yandere.
He takes it personally when people have talent, but squander it.
Hideyoshi (60):
Loyal to the death, Hideyoshi is devoted to Nobunaga with every fiber of his being.
When Nobunaga is believed dead, Hideyoshi proceeds nose dive into a pit of despair so deep that he can barely feel anything.
Mitsuhide (75):
Genuinely believing that there is nothing worth loving about him, Mitsuhide is a sadodere who enjoys teasing others– the closest thing to love that he thinks he’s allowed to have.
Because Mitsuhide keeps his feelings and secrets close to his chest, he is often mistaken as a villain, which exactly what he wants.
Mitsunari (80):
Obtuse and clueless, Mitsunari lovable and pure.
His score is lowered because he actively refuses, at his age, to learn to take care of himself, and has a co-dependent relationship with the other warlords, who merely joke or chastise him about it, rather than taking him aside and demanding that he get himself together, since he is in no capacity a child.
Kennyo (55):
Self-loathing, and chock full of martyr complex, Kennyo goes from murdering madman to regretful, forlorn monk at the speed of light.
His determination to see Nobunaga fall blinds him to the fact that he has other options such as forgiveness.
Shingen (90):
Laid back and chivalrous, Shingen is mature, and dependable to those in his inner circle.
He keeps his illness a secret, which is a personal choice.
Kenshin (50):
A yandere bent on keeping those close to him, Kenshin honestly believes that he cannot die.
The first thing out of Kenshin’s mouth is that he won’t be cowed by a hostage, but the next time you turn around, he’s wrapping himself all kinds of ways around his MC’s (hostage) finger, the better to acquiesce to her every request.
As such, Kenshin experiences the cognitive dissonance of presenting himself one way, but behaving another.
Even knowing that that is how others see him, he is quick to defend himself when made fun of, as he doesn’t like his good intentions joked about.
Battle hungry and single-minded, Kenshin is often in the grip of ennui so strong that only extreme circumstances can pull him out.
Yukimura (70):
The only thing that brings Yukimura’s score down so low is his penchant for joking even when his MC has said she’s had enough, and the act that he’s extremely reactionary under the right circumstances, such as having sex on an unprotected battlefield and leaving his love interest there, deep asleep, with no shelter or anyone/thing to keep her safe.
Masamune (75):
Quixotic and capricious, Masamune is always raring to battle. He is preoccupied with appearing cool at any cost, but is also considerate and thoughtful.
His stubbornness is what cost him a higher score, as he contributes to his MC almost killing a man to prove herself, before he realizes that prattling about his own resolve has an effect on others’.
Sasuke (80):
Sasuke is incredibly smart, but he’s also a bit of a masochist, on top of being a huge fanboy.
He also subscribes to taking forever to notice/confess his feelings, but he is extremely loyal, and down-to-earth.

All of my past boyfriends (including my most recent ex) have praised/loved the fact that I was “ditzy”, “not the brightest crayon in the box” & “adorably naïve” but like, I wasn’t trying to look dumb like some other girls I’m friends with do to get a guy, I was just being myself! How can I look smart (clothes/appearance wise) so the next guy I attract won’t be someone who basically only loves me cause I’m stupid? (I know this is a odd question, but a mutual told me you give good advice)
Hello darling! I think that your concern is both valid and admirable. I should note before I answer your question that, based on your ask, I highly doubt that you’re “stupid.” I don’t know you well enough to know whether other words you used like “ditzy” or “naive” apply - but even if they do, that’s not the same as stupid and I’m really sorry than anyone ever made you feel that way.
But your question seems more about how to attract the right kind of guy, and I’ll do my best to give you advice that is actually useful. (After the jump cause I got a little long-winded.)
I have had friends with a similar issue, and I don’t recall them ever solving it with clothing.* The way they solved it had to do with 3 things:
1. Building up their own confidence to the point where they felt comfortable expressing their opinions. This is not always easy. Especially if you are someone who’d been treated like you’re dumb. But it’s important. All people, even ones not traditionally “intelligent,” have opinions and thoughts and dreams and concerns. And the more comfortable you are with expressing that to other people, the easier it will be to find someone who appreciates your authentic self, as opposed to a superficial quality like “adorably naive.”
2. Recognizing red flags early. For example, you might in fact be “naive.” But if someone is attracted to you BECAUSE of that, valuing that quality (and all that is implied by it, like being easily manipulated, gullible, innocent, etc) above all other qualities you possess, then get out quick. Whereas, if someone is attracted to other things about you, like kindness, a sense of humor, shared interests, etc, then making an offhand comment about how cute your naivete is would be less problematic. Romantic partners can like us for many reasons. But anyone who’s primary attraction involves a quality that they perceive as “weakness” is a cause for concern.
3. Time. This one might sound frustrating but the truth is, the older you get and the more experiences you have, the more you learn about lots of different things. You might come off as “adorably naive” because, you know, you’re young and don’t have a lot of life experience. That’s perfectly okay. Someday you will be older and have had more experiences/know more things. In the meantime, try to surround yourself with people that value all of the things that you love most about yourself, as opposed to people giving you attention for qualities that you want to change. I have a good friend who, in high school, sounded like a complete airhead. But she wasn’t dumb, she was just really sheltered. By the time she was 24, she looked and sounded savvy as fuck. I was friends with her back then, because she was creative and funny and talented and kind. And I’m friends with her now, because even though she’s no longer adorably naive, she’s STILL creative and funny and talented and kind.
*Caveat: It’s true that certain kinds of clothing/hair/etc give visual cues to people about your personality. We can say all we want that clothes don’t matter, and maybe they SHOULDN’T, but in reality, the way we present ourselves visually is most people’s first clues about us. So, sure, you could dress more conservatively and wear dark/neutral colors, glasses etc. But if you like glitter nail polish or neon pink or pigtails, you should be free to wear that, (and honestly bro, those are all regular features of my own wardrobe), just understand that those visual cues might cause some people to prejudge you.
This is kind of complicated issue, so feel free to follow up - if you have more questions, or if I misunderstood something in your original ask.
I want to make sure you know that even ASKING this question shows a high degree of thoughtfulness and self-awareness, and those are signs, to me, of both intelligence and maturity. So bascially, you seem awesome and I hope you find people who appreciate that.
