Dear Mom, Aunt Lin wasn't very happy about having her photo taken at first. I think her reluctance had something to with certain slimy reporters over the years trying to make her look bad.

To ease her nerves, I developed a few of my favorite shots and showed them to her. I guess it worked because she said I can set up a darkroom in her house. I can't begin to tell you how excited I am for that. Ikki and Meelo keep moving my equipment around, and I don't have much space in the dormitories to start.

While I am in the process of setting up, I sent the photos I mentioned before. Let me know what you think. It's hard to tell if I have an eye for this sort of thing.

i just want lin to be close to her niblings. like opal coming over for dinner weekly (sometimes with the krew), the twins teaching her to play power disk, discussing art techniques and history with huan, finding an understanding with bataar. forming an unspoken pact with bataar sr to keep the peace in the family and look after the kids when she can. maybe they all show up on her doorstep one night when they just rly need to get away from suyin and zoufu. i want lin to be happy with her family the end

Beifong headcanon:

Suyin knew that Toph had retired to the swamp (and possibly even visited her from time to time) but promised not to tell anyone her location. However, she told Lin once they reconciled. Opal also knew she was alive, but not exactly where. My reasoning for this is the mild reaction Lin and Opal had to Toph randomly showing up, as well as Lin's line, "You know, after Su and I patched things up, I thought, 'Maybe I should reach out to Mom'." Why would she say that if she didn't a) know she was alive and b) had some idea of where to find her? I like this explanation much better than what some people assume, which is that Toph abandoned everyone and made them think she was dead. I don't really understand why people want to think the worst of her. She had flaws but still had a big heart. I think she just got to a point where seismic sense made it too hard for her to live around other people.

In my head, Su accidentally got pregnant with the twins almost right after giving birth to Opal. The pregnancy was really difficult on her and Katara and Kya had to be the ones to take care of her through it.

When Lin learnt of this, she almost reached out, but ended up chickening out at the last second. This woman would rather fling herself into a volcano than expose her emotional vulnerabily.

During this time, Aiwei inserted himself into the family and helped Su with managing the city and stuff. He even occasionally helped babysit the kids. This is why Su was so attached to him. In my brain I also like to think that she named the older twin, Wei after Aiwei. They already had a Junior in the house so they just shortened the name i guess.

After a very difficult birth, Katara advised Su not to try for anymore children. This is also one of the reasons Su ended up adopting Kuvira when the opportunity presented itself.

Being so close in age, Opal and the twins are often treated as a set of triplets rather than being just short of a year apart. This also means that, despite being younger, the twins feel very protective of their sister, especially back when she was a nonbender. I can also see Su being, in turn, super protective of the twins. They're her baby boys and she always wants them close to her. A little bit of codependency going on there I think.

It always makes me laugh to think about how Baatar Sr always seems to just "be there" in every scene he appears in, and ends up involved in other people's problems against his will.

It's like, just let he be, please. Let him go back to his office, he's just a cinnamon roll 😭

I also find it amusing how different Senior and Junior are while still being so similar physically.

Dear Mom, My darkroom is all set up and ready to go! I brought Bolin to help me clear out the spare room Aunt Lin said I could use, but when we arrived, it was pretty much already empty. Bolin helped me organize my equipment and get it into place. He also sniffed the inside of the development chemical bottles when he thought I wasn't looking. I am pretending I didn't see it.

Anyway, I am eager to put my new workspace to use. For better or worse, there is so much going on in Republic City right now, and I feel as though I can't let the moments slip by undocumented. One day I want be able to look back and grasp the magnitude of what happened, even if it isn't so beautiful to look at. I also want to know that we— me, Aunt Lin, Korra, Asami, Bolin, Mako, Tenzin, the airbenders, all the volunteers— rallied together to help in any way that we could. It is eerie to see so much rubble and destruction, but beyond that, it is the knowing that every building, every shattered storefront, was the life and legacy of so many people. One that they can't get back. I've even caught Aunt Lin staring out the window with a funny look in her eye. There is a growing sense that things are never going to quite be what they were. I just hope whatever comes along next will help all of these people put their lives back together.

As I am sure you can tell, there is something a little off about my latest photo. Bolin was the one that took it. I explicitly told him to get a shot of Aunt Lin and me to send back home but he took some creative liberties. I would have made him retake it, but it was the last one in the roll. I almost didn't develop it all, but I figured it might make you laugh. Aunt Lin was less amused by his seemingly endless capacity for misinterpreting instructions. I am not so sure he is going to last in this line of work. Though, you know Bolin, nothing can kill his spirit. The few times I have asked Aunt Lin how he is doing working for the RCPD has produced mostly grumbling punctuated by a gruff "... he's a good kid."

I miss you by the way, all of you. I thought about coming to visit, but Juicy's allergies have been acting up worse than usual and I don't want her to strain herself. I hope we can get together soon. Love, Opal

P.S. Do you recognize this photo? Aunt Lin pulled it out of one of her desk drawers and tossed it my way. She said I could keep it if I wanted to add it to my collection or something. I thought it would be best to send it your way for safekeeping. Though, I would like to know if there is any sort of story behind it.

Surely I can’t be the only one in the fandom who headcanons that Poppy was the Beifong heiress and Lao married into the family.

My reasoning for this is that when the two of them separated after Toph ran away, it was he who left the Beifong Estate, rather than Poppy going to back to her family. And he seemed to be financially reliant on the refinery.

Now, I realize that’s not proof of anything. I admit to having no working knowledge of how a separation would be handled in that culture/time period. It just makes sense to me.

Yes, I adore the headcanons of Lin bonding with Kuvira and taking her under her wing and stuff where Lin sees herself in Kuvira and whatnot..

But what about the headcanons where Lin sees herself in Opal and the boys (minus Baatar. Fuck Baatar) What about the headcanons where Lin sees Suyin in Kuvira?

What about the headcanons where Lin sees her niece and nephews vying for their mothers attention and willing to do anything to keep her pride and affection?

What about the headcanons where Lin sees a sibling split off from the family, mix with bad, dangerous people? Where said sibling causes pain to innocent people with their actions?

What about headcanons where Lin sees and remembers the strife it causes in a family?

What about the headcanons where Lin sees Kuvira trying to hurt her siblings?

What about the headcanons where Lin sees that when Kuvira is finally brought to justice, she is let off with basically a slap on the wrist? Justice trumped by a mother's love once again.

What about the headcanons where Lin sees her niece, her nephews, hurt, frightened, betrayed, confused?
