Thinkfast fluff (bc I can’t stop thinking about them)

“God, Shepherd, can’t you do anything slow?” David moaned into Tommy’s mouth.

Tommy pulled back with a wicked grin. “Only when it’s you, apparently.”

He leaned in to steal another kiss from his boyfriend. Tommy’s hands were up the back of David’s shirt, splayed out on the toned back he had pressed firmly against the wall. David’s arms encircled Tommy’s neck, fingers burying in his hair, digging into his scalp.

Tommy liked things fast. Speed was his name after all. Most of the world moved at far too sluggish of a pace for him. And he was often so bored out of his mind by it all. Then he met David, and they became noodles-and-a-coffee friends, and somewhere after that David had brought Tommy back into existence with a kiss. He hadn’t been able to stop thinking about those lips, even when he had kissed Kate that night, it was David he couldn’t get out of his head in the following months. They became friends. Good friends, surprisingly. Tommy didn’t have many of those.

And now they were here. Boyfriends.

Tommy liked how the word tasted in his mouth. David Alleyne was his boyfriend. He also liked how David’s tongue tasted in his mouth. Which is exactly where it was right now.

“You sure this is too fast for you? I mean, I didn’t initiate tongue.” Tommy pulled back to raise an eyebrow at David. He only sighed.

“You’re impossible, babe. Now come back here.”

Well that was just an offer Tommy couldn’t refuse.

If David ever gets to the point where he has enough prominence to have a nemesis what if their whole theme was wisdom? Like David's thing is not wisdom it's information and because his power takes it from other people it can only be so finely tuned to him. But if someone just knew how to do so much, ( maybe because they have a similar power, or they're one of those characters who've lived for centuries and specifically focusing on learning and rooting those discoveries to themselves.) Maybe it'd overwhelm David because while David pulls a large amount of his skills, abilities, and knowledge out like and arsenal, there'd be something something fundamentally different about this foe. Maybe their body is different from David's but their brain is the same???

I just wanted to tease this thought out a little bit. Also if I think in the wrong direction it falls apart anyways lmao.

If he ever gets a nemesis I just hope they don't go with "STRONG VS BRAIN???"

Ok, so I’m gonna go on a little rant on here.

I’m a marvel comics fan, my favorite comics were the young avengers comics and absolutely loved the dynamics between the characters. I particularly loved Tommy Shepherd, also known as Speed. Out of the entire lineup of Young Avengers, I somehow saw a piece of myself within his character. But his treatment in Marvel Comics definitely leaves something to be desired. Especially with the whole thinkfast breakup which is is my last straw.

First of all, the writers reasoning for breaking breaking Tommy and David up is ABSOLUTE HORSESHIT! Tommy has no connections to the x-men, no connections to Krakoa, ITS NOT EVEN CONFIRMED IF HE AND BILLY ARE MUTANTS OR NOT! (Which is a whole other ballgame I don’t wanna get into) Their reasoning is flimsy at best and bullshit at worst because of this, and it gets even worse when you introduce a new love interest so soon after they break up OFF PANEL with a seemingly insulting dig at Tommy within the comic.

Second of all, I’m worried how this will affect Tommy’s appearances in comics. The last time we saw him was the scarlet witch and quicksilver miniseries. He barely, if ever gets any appearances anymore and the ones he does show up in, he was with David (Which is probably why the writer thought Tommy was an X-men connection). Tommy is frequently left out of major story arcs and team-ups, leading to me feeling that he is somehow forgotten by the writers and creators at Marvel. While Tommy has been a part of the Young Avengers, he is often overshadowed by other more prominent characters like Kate Bishop, America Chavez, Cassie Lang who’s with Antman, Noh-Varr whos with the guardians of the galaxy, his mother, his uncle, even his own twin brother! He’s often underutilized as well and when he is there, he’s just the goofier version of quicksilver.

Third, we barely get any sense of actual character from him and in moments we do it’s just immediately dropped. First example: scarlet witch and quicksilver #3, where he actively mentioned Davids supposed death (cuz he definitely didn’t know that David was actually alive? I’m kinda confused about this?) and he seemed to be kinda disassociated from with stating he wasn’t there until Pietro snapped him out of it. This isn’t the first time someone has died and Tommy wasn’t there. He finds his mom’s dead body before Trial of Magneto and later in issue 1, seems disassociated when talking with Kevin. In the infinity comics, he states that people always forget about him. I see that he probably often finds himself overlooked and underutilized within the vast universe of superheroes.

Just to headcanon with fact: It’s somewhat implied he may have been neglected. I mean we barely know anything about his life before except that his parents were divorced and he was in and out of juvie until he was a teenager. Considering that they didn’t give a shit about him, leaving their child alone to the court system, and then not contacting him. (Though I doubt he would want that.) He so desperately wants a family, and he sees that in the young avengers, in the magnet family (even if they’re a little fucked up, they’re infinitely better). The team breaks him out, and a kid who looks exactly like him says they’re brothers and this powerful witch is their mother. He doesn’t want to believe it. He can’t believe it because that means he has another family that actually cares about him. Then they find out about everything Wanda went through and he takes in the connection even further. The team goes on a few missions and find out they could save his mom, and then they go through trauma via teammates dying and and the avengers/x-men fighting over his spirit mom. The team decides to breakup, he doesn’t want this to happen, the only thing he has being taken from him, he doesn’t want this to end. But it does, and it hurts, especially because his brother is willing to let go of it so easily. And it’s even harder because he’s living with him, his boyfriend, and other family who’s too nice and so he leaves and no one apparently cares. He goes on with heroics alone, working jobs, meets David and recruits him for a stakeout, then gets kidnapped by an entity. He then comes back almost a year later and has to take it in stride. He goes through so much traumatic and sad shit and either no one cares or they’re too busy. He doesn’t have much support. David seemed to be the only support he had and they’re broken up now. Wanda has her own shit, Pietro has his own shit, Billy has his own shit. HIS OTHER TEAMMATES HAVE THEIR OWN SHIT!

I’d imagine he’d have some type of resentment towards everyone, especially Billy. He has the perfect husband, perfect family, has a great relationship with their spiritual mother, and has unimaginable power. In the infinity comics master pandemonium seemingly implied Tommy has some kind of powerful potential, but we haven’t seen that yet. They haven’t even made any foreshadowing towards that. But I’d imagine after the whole break up with David, he’d have a mental breakdown from all the shit he went through. His boyfriend dying twice while he wasn’t there, after the second time David breaks up with him then gets a new boyfriend almost immediately (I don’t know the timeframe, I’m sorry), I’d crack too.

Considering all of this I introduce the following options:

1.) Put him in a new team. Have him be apart of a new team of youngish heroes, or better yet make him a mentor. He’s great with kids. I can’t think of any actual teams he could be on, but just let him be a part of a team. Please?!

2.) Have him interact with more characters. Have him interact with his family more. Wanda, Pietro, Lorna, Billy, fucking Magneto and Luna, give him more interactions with them. Have him mention talking to Kate Bishop. OR ELI BRADLEY ANOTHER CHARCTER YOU’VE SEEMINGLY FORGOT MARVEL!

3.) Give him his own miniseries. Or a fucking arc. I wanna see my baby do something cool, not play second fiddle to Billy for once. Billy gets several different comics to appear in and has so much power. Give Tommy a power upgrade like in the fanfics. Develop his powers more, like those headcanons where he could manipulate time and space. If the writers on ao3 can do that, you can do it too. Or better yet, have him be an antihero, that would absolutely fit him better. Didn’t he literally kill people when he first appeared? Have him be a bit more violent when dealing with bad guys. Not completely sociopathic, just a bit chaotic.

Anyway, please stop sleeping on Tommy Shepherd Marvel, he has so much more potential, you don’t even know.

Always a pleasure to write Neuro. Gotta admit, this was way shorter than I expected and it's more darkthinking siblings focused than Neuro, but I hope you still enjoy it (my other idea was thinkfast lmao). But at least Neuro can be a good big brother to Shade and take the fact he had a decent dad to help Shade with his issues/

Anyway, trigger warnings for food issues.

Tastes Like Home

Neuro wasn't sure what he expected when Shade started to live with him. He knew that his younger brother (that he didn't know for so long, that was alone for so long) was a bit…self-destructive, if brilliant. but Neuro didn't fully understand the impact living in dinky apartments and on the streets, after growing up in neglectful houses, had on Shade.

One of those things was the willingness to eat anything put in front of him. Once, Neuro had found him eating a piece of bread that Neuro had been planning to throw away due to the mold growing on it. Shade had simply eaten around the mold, and he seemed so confused why Neuro was concerned.

It was then Neuro realized that there was practically nothing Shade wouldn't eat. He had foods he really didn't like, if his scrunched up nose at the sight of beets was anything to go by, but otherwise Neuro couldn't figure out his opinion of foods, good or bad.

While Neuro could have just used his elemental power to figure out Shade's opinion on different foods, he wanted his brother to start trusting him with things, even with small things like if he liked a certain food. Neuro didn't think he would ever really get it, having grown up with a dad who loved him and cared for him deeply, but he could get the idea that for someone like Shade, trust was hard. It was something that needed to be develop over time.

After a painfully awkward conversation with Shade, Neuro and Shade had managed to come up with an agreement. Shade would communicate with Neuro if something was making him ill, whether that be vomiting like he did with chicken or an itchy throat or mouth like with beets. In return, Neuro would ask Shade to collaborate on meals throughout the week, so this way if Shade left, he could have a proper foundation on how to meal prep for the week.

Neuro's heart ached at the idea of his brother feeling like him leaving was inevitable, but Neuro put on a brave face and reasoned to himself that it was probably a good idea for his 19 year old brother to know these skills. And who better to teach him said skills than his 27 year old brother?

It was hard work, but eventually Shade was quietly telling Neuro that peaches also made his throat swell up to the point he felt like he couldn't breathe properly, and Neuro was going out to the store to grab ingredients for spaghetti, a request from Shade.

Maybe it wasn't perfect to some, but Neuro couldn't help but feel satisfied with the system he made to help his baby brother (which he would call Shade until he was in the grave).

And if he got to see a small, true smile on Shade's face when he got to try pomegranate for the first time? All the more worth it.

I think the comic with Aaron is a reference to something Oliviera said in an interview about Thinkfast, since he was the one who made it canon back during Empyre? He said that it's not a serious/closed relationship and they were probably in more of a friends-with-benefits situation. Or at least, that's his intent when he writes Thinkfast, and nothing in X-Factor feels like it directly contradicts that? But it's never explicitly stated in-comic at any point, so it definitely comes across as... odd.

Kind of a weird thing for Oliveira to say, at least in retrospect, since he is also the writer who teased much more serious feelings between them in his Young Avengers run on Unlimited. David literally comes thiiiiiiiis close to slipping up and saying "I love you."

Anyways, I just think that at this point, we've seen a fair number of open and casual relationships in/around the Krakoan era, and they all come across as really flat and boring-- to me!-- because there's no momentum and nothing interesting happens. Just look at Bobby and Christian, or, hell, Jean and Logan-- and those are characters who actually get page time. If Tommy's only gonna be in, like, one issue a year, it might be good to punch up the stakes a little.

You calling Jenni/Imra 'Thinkfast' is SO funny and I don't think you know it cus you look like a DC blog. To know you'd have to have read the Young Avengers Comics and New X-Men but in Marvel Thinkfast is the fandom name for David Allyne/Tommy Shepherd. David is a Mutant with the ability to temporarily absorb the skills and knowledge of people around him, and Tommy is a Speedster. So Think-David, Fast-Tommy. But anyway a bit ago marvel broke them up (off panel) after having a hand full of panel time for a stupid reason but seeing a new post in the tag through me for a loop 💀💀💀

I know things about DC as well and I know Jenni is a Speedster I don't know who Imra is (loved your art btw) but I really hope your thinkfast does better then our thinkfast. 💀💀💀

Also, Imra is a psychic! So that's where the "think" part comes from. They're both from Legion of Super-Heroes, specifically from the post-zero hour era LOSH. It's a really good comic, one of my favorites, totally recommend.

Jenni/Imra is totally a rarepair though so thankfully dc doesn't have very much opportunity to mess them up.

okay I don't expect anyone to rb this but u can if u want this is just a lil mini rant abt David now that I've read Academy X

When I first started reading New X-Men I was like huh this is Not the David I know but now that I've gotten through all of his major character development I think I really Get where Gillen was coming from with him and think he actually got David right. I don't agree with David being attracted to Teddy or Colossus even though Gillen seems to think that's his Type (it's not, his type is asshole speedsters lmao. Kieron, could you by chance be, projecting? Mayhaps?) and like. If I was going to make any of the OG 12 queer I would have done Brian, the most obvious answer, but he got killed off too quickly for that to happen lol. But it's okay because David is a bi icon now and we love that for him.

I do find it a little strange that he and Tommy got along so well at first after what Nori did to him, but hey, who's to say he didn't even realize how similar they were? and given the long time period between YA 2 and when Tommy and David were confirmed to be together, I think it's safe to say that David may have forgiven her, or at least gotten over her enough to overlook the similarities between her and Tommy by that time.

But yeah... since then the only thing I've really liked for David was Gillen's Thinkfast pride story and the voices infinity one focused on Tommy. The rest... it's either crumbs where they're just reduced to "Nerd boy and asshole bf" or its... Williams' X-Factor.

The biggest problem, obviously, with X-Factor was the Hatecrime. That was not Leah's story to tell, and of course it's been so long now that if David gets to be big in anything it's unlikely it will be acknowledged. Which it SHOULD BE. Now that she did that, we HAVE to acknowledge it in his story because that isn't something that David should just be able to walk away from. Ignoring it or pretending it didn't happen, at this point, just isn't okay.

My other main criticism with Williams' David is that, well... along with many of her other characters in this book, he's pretty much reduced to a memey, one dimensional, fragment of what he has been in the past. He's "Distinguished bi nerd boy" which... that has never been David, that has never been who he is.

I think David working in investigation is very interesting and obviously his powers are very useful for that, but I wish we could bring back David working in combat, because friendly reminder, he has the fighting skills of everyone he's ever come into contact with, even when he had lost his powers, after the Cuckoos gave him everything back, he could fight like fucking Wolverine, he had all of Kitty's ninja training in him. and now he has even more than that. He's incredibly skilled in hand to hand combat, and he's also just, beyond useful and powerful in so many ways.

Anyways. to wrap this up. Idk how long Gillen is going to stay with the X books but I wish he would write David again. I wish David was in something big, or long enough to be interesting, I wish he was on a team, maybe even leading a team. He was such a great leader for the New Mutants Squad? He didn't even have powers or the knowledge he had before losing them when he helped his team take down FUCKING NIMROD??? HELLO?? He should be so much more relevant than he is right now.
