Lev scrunched his nose at Nik, and flicked some water at him. "I think we need more scenty stuff," he said, sighing. "This wasn't enough with the last bath." It'd been a few more days, and Lev still had that lingering undercurrent of death to his scent.
Nik chewed on his bracelet. "I mean, it might be permanent?" Nik said, watching Lev carefully.
Despite himself, Lev's bottom lip trembled. He scrubbed at his face to get rid of the expression. "No," he said stubbornly. "It'll fade. I refuse to smell like roadkill forever. I just need to keep- to keep scrubbing at it." Even if he was already tired just sitting here.
"You don't smell like road kill," Nik said. "Amara's just a bitch."
Lev frowned. "She's blunt," Lev said. "And you agreed! At least that I smell... dead. I don't like it." He held up his rag. "So. Scrubbing."
Nik looked offended. "I didn't say I agreed," he protested, and went on to add petulantly, "If it bothers you that much, you can get axe body spray."
"I think I'd rather smell dead," Lev muttered, scrubbing at himself half heartedly.
"Are you sure?" Nik needled.
Lev threw his rag at Nik and blew a raspberry at him.
Nik caught the rag, smiling a little. "Well, apparently there are worse things to smell like than death, then, aren't there?"
"Hmph." Lev reached for one of the bottles of oils, and poured some in.
"See? I was right."
"Hmph," Lev muttered again, sinking lower in the water. It was hot enough he was flushed gold, but he doubted the warmth would last more than a few minutes out of the bath itself. He lifted a leg and draped it over the bathtub so he could poke Nik. "How long do I have until dinner?"
After grabbing one of Lev's toes and tugging, Nik said, "Until Cameron comes and yanks us out of here."
Lev wiggled his toes at Nik in response, before sighing and sitting up. "Get me a towel?" he asked, pulling the plug.
"Sure thing, Princess." Lev got out while Nik tracked one down, and let Nik rub him down when he got back. He kissed Lev's cheek when he was done.
Lev booped noses with Nik before he went to go find some clothes. Nik wasn't far behind, so Lev just grabbed the first sweater and pair of pyjama bottoms, and backed out of the closet again. He pulled them on and turned to make a beeline for the bed.
Nik caught him around the waist gently. "We gotta eat. Cameron will yell if we don't. Also... I'm hungry."
"We can eat in bed," Lev said, lifting a finger with each point. "I'm sleepy. Cameron never yells, and... we can eat in bed."
"Lev. No. We eat in the kitchen like civilized people do."
"I'm not civilized, I'm a zombie," Lev joked, even as he padded for the hallway.
"You're not a zombie," Nik said sharply, as he pulled Lev towards the kitchen.
"I know," Lev said apologetically as he followed willingly. "I was just joking. I thought it was funny, Nik."
He decided to ignore the look Cameron shot them, and settled at the table, immediately putting his head down.
"Did you not get enough sleep?" Cameron asked dryly.
"I'm sleepy," Lev mumbled.
There was a long stretch of silence, before, "I can see that."
---
Bedtime had become Lev's favorite part of the day. He felt less guilty about sleeping then. Once he was free of dinner, Lev all but dove into bed, and just peeped out from under the covers at Nik. Nik joined him indulgently.
That was all Lev needed to suction himself to Nik's side. He pressed his face to Nik, sighing happily.
"You're not an igloo anymore," Nik said.
Lev hummed. "Good," he said, sitting up and peeling out of his shirt. He flopped back down, closing his eyes. "Maybe the sleeping is helping."
"You mean it isn't my fantastic body heat that's helping?"
"Cuddles help," Lev agreed. "And taking the baths like Ash said probably helped too. Finally."
Nik hummed. "I mean, I guess."
Lev was too sleepy to argue. "Hey, Nik?" he asked, bumping Nik's head with his own.
"Hm?"
"Can you say it again?"
"You mean, 'You're not an igloo anymore'?"
"No," Lev mumbled. "The love thing."
Nik kissed Lev's nose, matching Lev's mumbled tone as he said, "I love you."
A smile crossed Lev's face. "I love you too. So much," he promised sleepily.
"That's because you have taste."
"Not according to Cameron."
"Yeah, well, that's because Cameron's a snob."
Lev laughed softly, but he was already drifting off.
---
Darius had spent the last week and a half, for lack of a better phrasing, hiding. The moment Destris had laid eyes on him, Darius had made good use of the last five hundred years of ghostly practice and kept his distance the best he could.
And the best way he could do that was by keeping Nate company in his house; even if that meant not keeping an eye on his mate in this time. He had barely had a moment where he could go back and just see Cameron and make sure he was getting back to his routine now that Lev was back.
He had spent the last hour or so in Nate's art studio watching Nate paint while his baby napped in a bassinet soundly next to him. At nearly four and a half months Lucas seemed to have grown a bit of chub in his dusted tan cheeks and had seemed to sleep almost completely through the night- especially since Bay and Nate moved Eden to a different room.
The little monster seemed to enjoy screaming in the middle of the night to wake everyone up in the house, especially the little boy who had been sleeping deeply across the room from her. Nate kept side eyeing him from the painting, watching Darius play with Lucas' dark brown locks. "...If you want," Nate said, "I could. Let you hold him? I know you won't hurt him."
Darius hummed faintly. "I know," he said, after a long moment. "However, I'm not too sure that your mate would be as agreeable." Especially since there had probably been a total of two or three people besides Bay himself who had held Lucas.
And that included Nate in the equation.
Nate sighed and leaned back, eyes turning back to the colorful painting he was working on. "Yeah," he agreed. "That's true. Though I think he's getting better." There was such a fondness in his voice, right along with amusement. "He even let Ash hold him, without threatening to break his fingers if he dropped Lucas. I think that's progress to be quite honest."
"Absolutely," Darius said, solemnly. "Besides I don't want to worry about waking the little one up. I'm sure with Eden's shrill lungs it makes nap time a bit difficult."
"The worst. I have the feeling Baylor fights the urge to smother Eden with a pillow on a daily basis."
"He has remarkable self restraint," Darius said, moving up to his feet from the floor. "Would it be alright if I went to check on them?"
Nate flicked him an amused look. "Well you don't need to ask my permission," he said. "Ash said that they seem to be settling back into some kind of normal now that Lev's home. Though I understand if you want to go see for yourself."
Darius gave him a smile before disappearing out of Nate's house to Cameron's. He showed up just in time to see Nik take a sleepy Lev presumably to the bedroom, and while he watched them for a lingering heartbeat, he then turned his attention back towards the kitchen where he knew Cameron would be.
He started his way and settled at the counter, watching as Cameron went about systematically cleaning the kitchen. He had watched Cameron, countless times, in how he cleaned. There was such a meticulous orderliness to it that was fascinating to watch. The kind of order this brought seemed to soothe something jagged within Cameron.
Cameron finished cleaning the kitchen; had wiped down the counters three separate times before finally leaving. He followed Cameron back to the office, settled at the far end of the house from the bedroom, and went to the desk where he promptly went back to doing paperwork.
Darius settled across from him in one of the leather chairs, out of the way. There were carefully stacked blueprints Cameron seemed to be going through while taking and making calls. He did not miss the carefully folded blanket and pillow on the leather couch against the wall, either.
After a while Darius slipped silently from the room and wandered to the bedroom Lev and Nik were sequestered in. He found Lev curled into Nik's chest, out cold while Nik played with Lev's dark waves, half asleep himself.
"It's sad isn't it?" a voice said, from behind him. "Once again you're all alone and left with me. You'd think five hundred years would be enough for you to finally realize you are nothing."
If Darius could actually draw in air, he'd definitely be heaving a long sigh. It wouldn't be worth the energy it would take and instead, he looked squarely at Destris. "I do not need five hundred years to tell me something false," he said. "We're all something and someone, however you just. Happen to be an ass. Are you planning on spending your afterlife watching after Cameron. With me? You could move on... be somewhere not trapped between life and death."
"Have you considered taking your own advice?" Destris asked, mildly. "Or is your infatuation for Cameron just that strong?"
"My love for Cameron is that strong, yes," he corrected. "Not that you would understand, of course. I think any love you had for your family was bled out of you long before Cameron was conceived. And anything that was left was twisted into jealousy."
Destris gave an amused huff of a laugh. "Are you suggesting I am jealous of a bastard?"
A bastard who happened to have admiration and respect earned instead of outright given. "I'm suggesting you find a way to forgive yourself and find peace," Darius said.
The growing amused look on Destris' face was enough that Darius decidedly left and went back to Nate's house, where he knew Destris would not be fool enough to step foot. He found Nate still in the art studio, but this time Lucas was awake and wiggling around on his stomach on the floor.
Nate instantly looked up from his spot on the floor next to his son. "Are you alright?" he asked, concerned. "You look... upset."
Darius shook his head and settled down on the floor next to him, watching Lucas wiggle and babble happily at Darius. "Hi baby," he said, softly.
Happiness lit up Lucas' face like a thousand little suns. Nate looked fondly at his baby. "He clearly takes after me," he said.
"I can see that," Darius said. "He has a beautiful smile."
"He's a beautiful boy."
While Nate and Darius went about gushing after the baby, Lucas decided to reach for the closest toy he could get his tiny gums on.
---
Lev woke up burning hot. He swallowed a whine, and sat up. Sweat slid down his back as he rubbed his face. After a second, he leaned over and took Nik's pillow from under Nik's head. Nik whined at him, still half asleep, but Lev just got up and crawled in the closet. He closed the door behind himself and set Nik's pillow down right up against it while he dragged his nest closer, and then flopped down, confused.
This was definitely his heat, which made how tired he'd been make so much sense. But with his fever rising, it was getting hard to focus. He couldn't explain why he needed to be here, in the closet, and not out there with Nik.
A few moments passed, and then he heard Nik sit on the other side of the door. "Are you okay? Do you need me to get Cameron?"
Lev watched Nik's fingers wiggle as far under the door as far as they could. "No," he managed. The only thing he could get his omega to tell him was that he had to protect Nik. Not from what, just that he had to do right by Nik and that meant keeping space between them.
"No, you're not okay, or no, don't get Cameron?"
Lev curled tighter. "I don't know," he finally mumbled. His throat tightened. "I don't know," he repeated, but his voice began to rise with barely contained hysteria.
He could hear and smell Nik leaving quickly. The distance between them sent pain spiking through him. He whimpered, bit down on his pillow, tears rolling down his cheeks.
A knock on the closet door startled Lev. Judging by how the pain eased, Nik was back, but it was Cameron who said, "Talk to me."
Lev pushed his back against the door firmly. "My heat- I didn't know- didn't want-"
"I know," Cameron said. "Do you want my help?"
"No," Lev said abruptly. He thumped his forehead against the door, muddling his way through the conflicting instincts. "No, I can't- you can't- no. We didn't talk about- anything before."
"We're talking now. What do you want?"
"No," was all Lev could manage. "I can't think." His fingers found their way to his hair and dug in. "It's so hot. I have to protect Nik. I have to do right by- no. I can't think. I can't- no."
Nik's voice was very high. "What do you mean you have to protect me?"
"I have to- my omega-"
"Let me help you. I want to help you." Nik paused. "Please."
"No." Lev closed his eyes. "No."
"Nik, go call Ash."
The door rattled a little as Nik sat down against it. Lev could hear him calling Ash as told, and he could smell how close Nik was. Lev shoved himself against it, and then he backed up somewhat. He buried his face in the pillow, sucking in a few ragged breaths.
He blocked out whatever conversation was going on on the other side of the door. All he could focus on was how hot he was. Shivers crawled down his spine, and even just laying there was unbearable even with the soft blankets and pillows with him.
For a few minutes, Lev wrestled with his instincts until he could drift into a half conscious doze. Cameron knocking on the door dragged him unwillingly from it just as he was adjusting it.
"Open the door, Levant," Cameron said, alpha firm.
Lev whined, but he scooted away from the door until his back hit the far wall, dragging his Nik-pillow with him. Cameron knelt in front of him. All he wore was a pair of black silk pyjama bottoms, and he had an open bottle of water in his hand. "Drink."
Lev took it warily, but half of it was gone in one go. It helped a little, but Lev just stared blankly at his alpha. When his alpha brushed his fingers against Lev's forehead, his cheeks, Lev held still. His head was spinning, and he could feel the heat radiating off of him.
"It's just a heat," Lev mumbled. "I can't- I can't think. I can always think."
"It's not just a heat. You were dead."
Lev pressed his palms against his eyes. "It's too soon," he whined. "I don't like this."
"You disliked being dead even more."
Another whimper came from Lev. He hunched over, at least until the water bottle started to spill. He sat up enough to stare at it blankly. In the end, he just held it out to his alpha hesitantly. Once the bottle was taken from him, almost gently, Lev folded in on himself again.
"You need to let Nik take care of you."
Lev shook his head. "I hurt- I'll- no. I can't." He didn't know how to explain the sheer conviction that he had hurt his omega before and that he would do it again if he wasn't careful. They hadn't discussed his heat. No one could consent in this. Not while Lev couldn't think straight and the other two would take care of him whether they really wanted to or not. It was how they showed they cared.
"Then what can you do?" His alpha was being so patient. Lev wanted to cry.
Instead he swallowed hard. His thoughts were racing, disjointed. "I can sleep." He pulled at his hair. "I can eat when I need to. But I can sleep through this."
His alpha nodded. "Fine. But Ash is on his way."
Ash. Ash. Lev had to blink a few times before the name clicked. Right. Ash. "Okay," he said in a small voice.
"Are you staying in here? We can move your nest to the bed, if you want."
Lev shook his head fiercely. "No."
His omega poked his head around the closet. "Can I come in there?"
Oh, the tone in his omega's voice. It hurt to whisper his, "No," but he just listed to the side and curled up. "I need you safe."
"Safe from what?" His omega asked, voice rising in confusion.
"Me," Lev mumbled, shrinking back into his nest and trying to crawl under the blankets.
That got his alpha's attention. "Lev, stop that. You're about as threatening as a piece of toast." Lev just closed his eyes and clutched the pillow close. Everything was so warm, and his head was swimming. His alpha put his hand in Lev's hair. "You're not going to hurt him."
It- it made sense, and yet- there was some sort of- voice, deep down, that his alpha was wrong, and he couldn't risk it. He couldn't. Logic had no place in a heat.
"Fine," his alpha finally said, resigned. "Nik's not going to leave. I'll be back in two hours."
Lev was confused until it clicked that it was probably almost three in the morning. Cameron usually got up before the sun, and that's when he started breakfast. At least he was keeping his routine. Lev just curled tighter.
---
Lev heard Ash before he saw him. The beta had the decency to knock on the closet door before he stepped inside. Lev's sleepy yes was enough invitation for Ash to kneel beside Lev's nest. Ash had questions for Lev, but when Lev just stared at him blankly, struggling to form a coherent thought, much less an answer, his omega took over for him from outside the closet.
"Why aren't you letting Nik in here?" Ash finally asked him directly.
Lev burrowed under his blankets. "I said no," he mumbled.
Ash sighed. "You need to stay hydrated," he finally said. "If he gets worse, call me."
"You're not going to make him?" His omega asked.
Lev almost wanted him to. He ached to be curled up in his boyfriend's lap, not huddled alone in a pile of blankets.
As soon as Ash was gone, Lev wiggled out of his clothes, throwing them out of the closet forcefully. Better. Better.
"Lev?" His boyfriend sounded so small and anxious. "Are you mad at me?"
Tears pricked at his eyes. "No," he choked out. "I love you. But I can't-" He had no idea how to explain the sheer conviction that Nik was safer away from him.
"You can still be mad at me and love me."
"I'm not mad," Lev said, finally starting to cry. "I'm not. I'm not. I just want- I have to do right by you. I just need- I need-"
"What does that mean?"
Lev flinched at the yell. "I don't know," he yelled back, and started crying harder. "I can't think."
"You don't have to think, you just have to let me hold you."
Lev wanted it. Wanted it so bad. His instincts were begging him to go, but he just curled tighter. "Just let me sleep," he said wetly.
"Okay," he heard his boyfriend say, and Lev could hear the tears in his voice too. Lev turned to face the wall, clawing for sleep. Maybe that would help.
---
Two days later, and everything was worse. His nest was soaked in sweat, and if Lev had been in any state of mind to be grateful, he would have been about the fact that he wasn't even a little aroused this heat. Instead he was hot and in pain. Every breath felt like swallowing glass, and he wanted to tear his skin off. It hurt.
Some time in the afternoon, Lev couldn't help it, and started to sob. That hurt too, but he couldn't stop. "Nik," he choked out, digging his nails into his arms to stay grounding. "Nik," he tried again.
The pain spiked as Nik's footsteps retreated. Lev muffled his cry with a pillow, curling tightly around himself. His alpha's scent appeared, but that wasn't who Lev wanted. "Nik," he whimpered.
His alpha grabbed him by the scruff. It was an old hold, one alphas used to make an omega go limp and make them easier to carry. Lev was honestly grateful for it; no matter how much it hurt, his body loosened enough for Cameron to carry him out of the closet. He found himself dropped in a lap.
"Let your mate take care of you," his alpha said firmly.
Lev couldn't argue with that. Not now. It felt right, with his mate's arms around him. Lev immediately started pulling on Nik's t-shirt. Nik hesitated, but let Lev undress him. Skin pressed against him, finally soothing most of the pain. Lev's tears lessened.
"Thank you," Nik mumbled as he held onto Lev.
Through his swimming thoughts, Lev managed to pluck out what he wanted to say. "You were right," he rasped.
"Of course I was. I'm always right." His mate sounded petulant, but all Lev cared about was the arms around him and the heartbeat against his hand.
---
Nik hadn't let go of Lev the moment he managed to get his claws into him. For the next day Lev's body temperature hadn't fluctuated in the slightest. Instead it had remained at a constant sweltering temperature, clinging to Nik the whole time.
He tried keeping his stomach not so pressed against Lev without his shirt. Amara's words about his weight were still ringing in his ears and he didn't need Lev's heightened instincts picking up on any of that.
Nik's head shot up when he heard someone knocking at the doorway. A growl was sitting deep in his chest before he even realized it was Ash at the doorway. That still hadn't stopped Nik from pulling Lev deeper against him.
Lev's only reaction had been a small whine and to dig his nails into Nik's back. Nik gave a small nip in apology before glaring at Ash. It was an effort to remind himself that this was Ash, even as annoyingly preachy as he was at times, he did in fact know what the hell he was doing.
"Can I come in?" Ash asked, from the doorway.
Nik was very aware of how firm his arms were around Lev's shoulders, keeping him as pressed against him as possible. He pressed his lips to Lev's shoulder before looking him in the eye. "Can he?"
Lev only stared at him blankly, eyes fever-bright and beyond gold. Nik took that nonanswer and looked back to Ash. "...sure," he finally said. But he stopped short and said, "Slowly." Unless Ash felt like getting a mouthful of teeth in his carotid. If he was a demon, that would hurt like hell.
Ash took that at the promise it was, and slowly came into the room and sat down on the edge of the bed a healthy space from them both. Ash's face was drawn tight. "Can I look him over?"
"Do I have to let him go?"
"No."
"Then go ahead."
Ash maneuvered around them, clearly having to do something like this before, quite possibly with other omegas in heats. The idea of having to deal with Bay during his heats would be nearly hysterical.
"Any changes at all?" he asked, Nik.
"His body temp has stayed the same, and Cam made him get out of the closet and come up here with me. Before that he was crying and in hysterics." When Lev didn't react to Nik's observations, he added, "That too. He just. Doesn't move and only responds when or if I try to move away from him. I think... he's been ignoring his base instincts, right? That's why this is so bad of a heat?" He fought the rising panic in his voice and kept himself carefully around Lev.
Ash's face was drawn tight. "Yeah, I think so. I wish Cameron had moved him to you sooner."
"He was trying to respect Lev's boundaries," Nik muttered irritably into Lev's burning skin. "And Lev got upset if I tried to come into the closet with him." Though that didn't stop Nik from also not wanting to be in the closet in the first place. And the guilt felt like acid.
That seemed to catch Ash's interest. "Why wouldn't he let you near him?"
"He said he was trying to protect me...?"
"Did he say what from?"
"Himself?"
Ash's face turned thoughtful, if a bit rueful. "Maybe he's trying to atone for trying to keep you dead."
Nik winced at that. "Okay but that doesn't even make sense. He doesn't remember doing that so why would he be trying to protect me from that idiocy now. If you haven't noticed, Ash, Lev is a little more alive? Telling me to be dead now would be a moot point."
"Are you, the most neurotic person I know, going to tell me that Lev would be using rational thinking during a heat at this current moment in time?"
When Nik moved to get just a little more comfortable to stop himself from smacking Ash upside the head, Lev whined and pressed deeper into him, promptly halting Nik's impulsivity. If it had been any other time he'd probably be sulking about it. If Ash didn't get a regular dose of a popping then he got unmanageable and too annoying. "We haven't been able to get Lev to eat very much," Nik admitted. "Not even Cam can until I try to help."
"I'll get an IV set up," Ash said, pulling out his phone to make a note. "Also I'm taking the room next to this one. I'm sure Cameron will be fine with it, if not he can get in line with everyone else who seems to have a problem with how I conduct things."
"Go nuts," Nik said, closing his eyes. "I'm sure he'll be fine feeding you as long as you prove to be useful to him."
---
When Bay said sit, Silas sat. He waited patiently on the couch, but when Bay put Lucas in his arms Silas went very still.
"You drop him and I break your arms," Bay warned.
Silas tucked Lucas close obediently, gazing down at Lucas. "Hi, baby," he cooed happily. Lucas babbled back, which only made Silas grin down at the infant.
"Lev's been alive for a week."
Silas stilled. "What?"
Even if Bay's firm look hadn't kept him in place, holding an infant would have. But still. "Hell of a thing to drop on me with no warning."
"Would you rather me have not told you?"
"No," Silas muttered, but he looked down at Lucas, and let the little boy grab onto his finger. That boy had more Nate in him than Bay, and  that was probably a good thing.
"That's what I thought. If it makes you feel any better, Nik didn't know either until a few days ago. It was a need to know basis, and you didn't need to know."
Silas made a face, leaning back. "You thought I'd run right over the moment I knew?" Silas asked, lifting a brow.
Bay mirrored his look. "If you're suggesting I don't know you're whipped for that boy and would drop everything for him in a heartbeat, you're sorely mistaken. As far as I'm concerned, this was two birds with one stone. Be mad about it all you want."
"He's hardly a boy," Silas grumbled. "If Lev wanted me to come see him he would have called. I didn't barge over there before he died, I won't now."
Bay looked at him for a long, long moment. Gaging. "With the amount you coddled, him, maybe I just assumed you didn't actually know he was an adult. I apologize. Next time your ex boyfriend dies, I'll make sure to act accordingly."
Silas grimaced. "Ouch," he said dryly, before, "Touche."
Bay looked satisfied. "Good." He watched Silas for the longest minute before saying, "If I leave for five seconds to go get my book, can I trust you not to drop my son on his head?"
"I won't budge an inch, Bay," Silas promised. He pressed a kiss to Lucas' forehead, grinned a little when the infant giggled at him around his knuckle.
Bay was only gone for a few seconds, and when he returned, he curled up on the couch opposite Silas and started reading. Silas watched Lucas, humming at him. So Lev was back. And he hadn't called. Which- fair. Not his omega. And Silas had been a shit friend. Maybe everyone was right. Enough people tell him to move on, maybe they had a point.
---
Amara flopped down beside Cin. Once she was settled, he started running his fingers through her hair. "When can we move in again?" Amara mumbled.
"Next week," Cin promised. "Tu pulled some strings."
Cin had found a nice house. Three bedrooms, a kitchen Cin swore up and down he would learn how to use, and two overly large bathrooms. He'd paid for it, and wouldn't let Amara know how much it'd cost. She wasn't sure she wanted to know. She'd promised him she'd let him take care of her.
"I'm assuming we're getting rid of most of my furniture."
"I told you you could keep the things that are sentimental," Cin told her sternly. "Even if it's everything in this apartment."
Amara sighed. "There's not much I want to keep," she admitted.
Cin tugged on her hair. "That's okay."
"Cin?" Amara mumbled.
"Hm?"
"You sure you want to be mated to me?"
Cin pulled her hair again. "I'll say it again, as many times as you need me, Mar. Yes. I wouldn't have asked if I hadn't wanted it."
Amara sighed again, louder, refusing to look up. "I want kids."
"I know."
"And you're okay with that?"
Cin was quiet for a long moment. Eventually he said, "Yes."
"You sure there, Cin?"
"Yeah," Cin promised. "I'm old, Amara. And I actually see a therapist. I think I can handle some kids by this point."
It was Amara's turn to be quiet. "I don't know if I can conceive or carry to term," she admitted quietly. "Not that I've tried, but fuck if I ever managed to keep it longer than a few weeks. Never fucked with protection, didn't care."
Cin let her ramble, and eventually pressed a kiss to her hair. "You've never tried to keep one," he pointed out. "And you've never been sober this long." He hesitated, and then added lightly, "And you're friends with a damn good healer."
"Who, Ash?" Amara asked. "He hates me right now."
"He doesn't hate you," Cin promised. "You should ask for his help, or at least his advice."
Amara grimaced. "Fine. I'll ask. But he's gonna say no."
---
Lev's fever broke two days later. He felt bone tired, and he ached, but he could focus for the first time in days. For a little while he reveled in the closeness, running his fingers down Nik's side, but eventually he looked up at Nik. "Hi," he rasped guiltily.
Nik's face was drawn, and Lev could see the exhaustion on his face. "Hi," he replied.
"I think my heat is over," Lev said in a small voice.
"I can see that. Why don't we get you something to eat?"
"Okay," Lev agreed easily. He hesitated, and then, "Are you mad at me?"
"Are you?"
"Mad at me or mad at you?" Lev blinked.
"At me," Nik clarified.
Lev shook his head a bit. "No?" He touched Nik's cheek lightly. "I wasn't and I am not mad at you. I- I don't know what that was. I can't explain it. My omega- my instincts were- strong. But they didn't make any sense. I wanted you. I promise."
The disbelief in Nik's face made Lev defensive, but he bit his tongue. Eventually Nik just said, "Can I put my shirt back on?"
"Oh. We're naked," Lev said, startled. "Right. Uh. Yeah?" He scooted away enough for Nik to be able to get his shirt. It hung loosely off of Nik. Lev watched him for a long moment, and then, "...mates?"
Nik lifted a brow. "So you remember that?"
Lev shook his head. "I remember what I felt. And I remember needing you. It got more fuzzy once Cam made me leave the closet." He tucked his face in the pillow briefly. "After that it's like my heat kicked into gear for real, and all I remember is it being hot."
"Yeah, you looked pretty out of it." He pinned Lev with a look "Please don't do that again. I thought you were out of the closet years ago."
Lev sat up slowly. "I won't," he promised earnestly. As Nik slid off the bed, Lev scooted towards the edge to follow. Nik was in the process of trying to pick Lev up when Ash barged in.
"Put him down," Ash snapped firmly.
Lev, who had barely made it of the bed, found himself plopped right back down. Nik looked guilty, but he glared at the bed rather than turn and face Ash.
"Hi, Ash," Lev said sheepishly, peeking around Nik. "I think my heat's over."
Ash glared at him, eyes glowing green with his magic. "Yeah, I can see that."
"I thought you couldn't see anything," Nik muttered.
Ash ignored Nik. "How are you feeling?"
Lev watched Nik sit down beside him before he said, "Better. Tired. Kind of achey, but- honestly I'm kind of hungry."
"I mean, probably. You haven't eaten anything in two days."
Lev blinked. "Oh." He stared at the IV in his arm for a good long moment, and then said, "I didn't mean to be such a-" He paused, frowning. "I can go eat now, can't I?"
"A little bit, yes," Ash said. "Your stomach is probably sensitive again."
Lev made a face this time. "Back to broth?" he asked sadly. He pushed himself up, holding onto the IV stand.
"If you hadn't ignored your instincts, we wouldn't be back to step one," Ash reminded him.
"I know," Lev replied. "I'd say I should have thought that through, but I wasn't exactly thinking at all." He looked back at Nik apologetically, and then said, "At least I'm better now."
Ash pointed to the bed. "Sit back down. You lost your standing rights. I'm getting you a wheelchair."
Lev blinked at him sadly. He would have argued, but his knees were already weak, and his head had been spinning lightly since he stood. He opened his mouth to agree, but even taking the step back to the bed was apparently a bit much. The ground rushed up to meet him.
Between Nik and Ash, Lev didn't actually hit the floor. Nik leaned over him as soon as they had him in the bed. "Are you okay?"
"Apparently not," Lev muttered, rubbing his forehead. He looked to Ash. "A wheelchair is probably a good idea."
Ash sighed. "Isn't it?"
"Can I do anything?" Nik asked, still sounding a bit panicked.
"I was going to get some pants," Lev said. "If you could get me some...?"
Nik was gone instantly. Lev peered out at Nik, and then at Ash. "I can still go get dinner, right?" Lev asked anxiously. "Just- with a wheelchair?"
Ash nodded. "It would do you good to get you out of this room."
"Can we go eat by the pool?" Nik asked in a small voice, setting Lev's pants down on the bed. Lev blinked, startled. He hadn't even known they had a pool. Of course Cameron had a pool.
"As long as Lev doesn't try to swim or drink the pool water, I guess."
Nik looked pleased, and looked to Lev, almost as if for permission. When Lev nodded, he all but beamed, and leaned over to kiss Lev's cheek. When Nik pulled away, Lev tugged him close again, pressing their foreheads together. He kissed Nik, soft and chaste. To his relief, Nik kissed back, if a little hesitant.
Lev pulled away before Ash could get annoyed, and looked down at the pants Nik had brought. "How am I gonna get dressed if I'm not able to stand up?" He asked pitifully.
"I'll help you," Ash replied.
And, well. That was that, Lev supposed.

358 Nights: Poker Night Part 2
It’s not that Luxord’s entirely opposed to the idea of sitting around and watching Demyx and Xigbar trade saliva. There is something intriguing about the single-minded intensity with which they go about it.
The way Demyx’s hands trace the well-defined muscles beneath Xigbar’s coat, and Xigbar’s fingers curl into Demyx’s carefully crafted hair, their nails digging in, careless of whether they meet skin or leather, yanking each other closer until one coat is indistinguishable from the other and the heat radiating off of them is so thick he can almost smell the sweat…
He’d be all for it really. It’s just that it’s encroaching on his poker night.
So Luxord shuffles once more and then flips a card across the table like a boomerang. It nicks them both in the neck before curving back and settling neatly between Luxord’s outstretched fingertips once more.
The two tear apart immediately, hands flying to their fresh, minuscule paper cuts, coming away tipped in red.
“Hey!” Demyx gripes, quickly overshadowed by Xigbar’s thunderous, “What the fuck?”
“Oh, wherever are my manners?” Luxord deadpans, arching a neat golden brow. “Did I interrupt?”
Xigbar strategically shifts Demyx to one side of his lap so he can set an arm on the table and glare across it. “You got something to say, Lux?”
Luxord sets the card down. “Round one. Just trying to determine whether you two are in or out.”
“Feels like maybe we should be asking you that,” Xigbar jeers, fingertips toying with Demyx’s coat zipper as if in invitation, though Demyx noticeably balks at the notion. “I mean, c’mon. We really going to play poker with three people? There are better ways to kill time.”
“Yeah, where is everybody?” Demyx glances around, meaning to search for other familiar faces, but becoming distracted by his guitar, abandoned on the tabletop. He slides into the chair beside Xigbar’s and, slipping the strap around his neck, begins to fiddle with it. “Larxene’s usually here beating all our asses by now.”
Luxord and Xigbar exchange confused glances.
Demyx winces, stretches an arm behind his head. “What?”
“Uh,” Xigbar’s glove wraps the back of Demyx’s neck, “Larxene’s dead, honey bun. ‘C.O. got K.O.’d,’ remember?”
“Oh.” Demyx looks puzzled for a moment and then hearing his own words echoed back to him kicks his brain into gear. “Oh, yeah! Duh. Totally forgot about that whole Castle Oblivion clusterfuck.” His attention returns to his guitar, he smirks. “Good riddance.”
Luxord frowns his disapproval, and Xigbar lets out a bark of laughter, squeezing the back of Demyx’s neck and then letting go as a shadow falls across the table.
“Good riddance to what?” Gibbs inquires with a good-natured smile, nestling a basket of smoking, warm beer bread in the center of their table beside a bundle of exhausted napkins and nicked cutlery.
Xigbar’s smile is sharper than the bread knife Gibbs stabs into the fresh loaf. “Larxene.”
“Your crew’s little she-devil?” Gibbs smiles a different kind of smile. “Take off with a man, did she?”
Xigbar pulls the bread basket his way. “In a manner of speaking.”
“Davy Jones,” Luxord replies, more familiar with the local lingo than the other two.
Gibbs staggers slightly, catching himself on the back of a chair. “Good heavens, no! She’s dead?”
“Yeah.” Demyx fidgets with one of his guitar’s tuning keys and plucks out a discordant note. “Apparently, like, super dead.”
Gibbs’ hand settles over his heart, sobering gaze passing between the other two, “’Tis no easy feat to lose a crew member. I am sorry to hear it.”
“Thank you,” Luxord replies tonelessly, sliding a bread plate out from the stack. Xigbar merely nods, proceeding to slice up the loaf.
“You’d be the only one,” Demyx mutters, and Xigbar should choke down his snort for Gibbs’ sake, but he doesn’t.
The silence is distinctly uncomfortable. For Gibbs. Fortunately, working in a bar, he’s accustomed to making hasty retreats from awkward scenarios, and he promptly nods toward their unusually small table.
“Well, you’ll be needin’ a few more chairs, I reckon?”
“Er… no.” Shifting his deck of cards out of the way, Luxord accepts the delicious smelling plate of bread Xigbar passes him. “I’d wager we’ll all fit here for the night.”
“Surely not?” Gibbs bites his lip, trying to remember a night their crowd was any fewer than seven strong. “Those two big, burly fellows never miss a game, do they?”
Lexaeus, Xaldin.
Luxord dismisses the notion with a swish of his butter knife. “They won’t be joining us.”
Through his evening buzz, Gibbs gradually recalls the other faces that typically crowd his tables each month. Not difficult to recollect, really, considering their mystically dyed hair, strange manners, deep pockets... “And what of your doctor? And your priest? And your botanist?”
Vexen, Zexion, Marluxia.
Xigbar glances up, really tries to muffle the smile. “Also not coming.”
“They’re not…also…” Gibbs cringes as the men in dark coats continue to cut and butter the beer bread instead of reacting. “...Are they?”
Xigbar offers a theatrical little sigh. “’Fraid so.”
“Damn,” crumbs spill down Demyx’s chin, and Xigbar can’t resist the urge to come at him with a napkin, garbling the rest of his words, “zounds baff when you put it all togeffer like bat.”
Weighed down by the news, Gibbs slides into the seat at Luxord’s side. Luxord pats him on the back because, if he’s recalling correctly, that’s the thing to do, and he figures at least one of them ought to be trying to keep up regular human appearances.
“There, there, old man. It’s all as the fates designed.” Luxord slides his tankard Gibbs’ way. “Have yourself a drink.”
Gibbs obediently takes a hefty swig. Being a sailor, he isn’t a stranger to loss, but this particular crew had been at the height of their youth and tough as you please…
Gibbs taken care of, Luxord nods to Xigbar and Demyx. “Now then, anyone know any three-person card games?”
Gibbs about spits out the swallow he’s just taken.
Xigbar groans, burying his face in Demyx’s shoulder as Luxord ponders their options.
Demyx glances between the two expectantly, and when nothing is proposed, shrugs. “I mean, there’s always Go Fish, man.”
“What the hell is Go Fish? ” Xigbar asks, words hot against Demyx’s neck, though he doesn’t seem particularly invested in the answer, his teeth nudging into sensitive skin, causing Demyx to squeak and swat at the gunman’s broad chest to no avail.
“Hm.” Luxord slides the deck Demyx’s direction. “I’m not familiar with it, but it sounds thematically appropriate to me.”
“What, seriously?” Demyx’s jaw drops open a little, as he picks up the cards. He squeaks again before elbowing Xigbar’s ribs. “None of you have heard of Go Fish?”
Gibbs’ mug settles harshly against the table as he rises abruptly to his feet. “You three are mighty cool for a group who’s lost half their crew.”
“Almost half,” Xigbar corrects, shifting his cheek onto Demyx’s shoulder to stare down his companions.
Luxord exhales through his nose, splays his hand on the table. “Xigbar.”
“Well, technically speaking, only almost half.” Xigbar shuts his eye to better ignore the reprimand. “And not even, like, the interesting half.”
“What the devil is wrong with you lot?” Gibbs seethes, bushy eyebrows furrowing, lifting up a napkin to wring between his palms.
Luxord exhales again, hands raising, “You’ll forgive us, Mr. Gibbs, we had a—What do you call it around these parts?—a mutiny on our hands. We’ve undergone losses on both sides.”
“And been working double time to make up for it,” Xigbar grunts, straightening to draw his beer closer. “At this point, we’d prefer to drink, fuck, and forget.”
Demyx groans but whether from the reminder of their hefty workload or the sudden lack of warmth is unclear.
“No.” The napkin flutters back to the tabletop. They watch Gibbs work this over, stern expression going slack as he looks at what’s left of the lively crew in a new light—their shoulders slumped, their faces haggard, their appetites like men half-starved.
“No, but...” Gibbs slumps back down into his chair. “But yous were all so close!”
All three Nobodies laugh. This time they can’t help it.
“Yep.” Xigbar doesn’t open his eye. “Hung the traitors out to dry ourselves. Or, well,” he smirks, “Axel did, anyway.”
Gibbs sets his head in his hand and then abruptly glances up, misunderstanding. “Don’t you be telling me Red Jack’s dead too?”
Gibbs had grown particularly fond of Axel, whose swagger and wild hair reminded him of a local legend he had once been well-acquainted with, an infamous Captain Jack Something or Other. And, Axel, for his part, seemed to almost enjoy regaling Gibbs with colorful, elaborate tales of Captain Xemnas and his mighty, fearsome crew off on adventures to battle against monsters who swallow hearts whole.
Axel seemed to weave half-spun truths with blatant lies as easily as breathing. He’d lost several Organization members’ trust mid-tale but completely captivated Gibbs’.
“And…” Gibbs glances up at the silence. He takes Luxord’s hesitant, utterly blank expression as confirmation of the worst and buries his eyes in his palm again, “your cabin boy? Oy, gods, please don’t tell me anything befell the sweet, young angel…”
Luxord pats Gibbs’ shoulder some more. “Rest assured, Mr. Gibbs, both are quite well.”
“Yeah, Axel’s no turncoat.” Bread polished off, Xigbar’s set to lighting up a cigarette to stem his urge to drink more, but he pauses mid-light to smirk. “He and his first mate are quite close.”
Luxord chuckles. First mate. “Nice pun.”
The end of the cigarette blazes, bobs around a muffled, “Fank you.”
“Huh?” Demyx head tilts, but Xigbar hastily shuts up the inquiry, placing his own cigarette between Demyx’s lips and lighting up another.
Gibbs does not look entirely reassured, so Luxord nods toward the entrance, crowded with sailors embracing or fighting or maybe just staggering drunk.
“They ought to be arriving any moment now, provided that Roxas hasn’t completely forgotten, and Axel’s not already in bed.” Luxord strokes his goatee thoughtfully. “Ordinarily, I’d send for them, but they have had quite a long week. Perhaps they need their rest.”
Either this set him at ease or the alcohol is kicking in, because Gibbs’ teeth show crooked through his wry grin. “Can’t imagine the pair of them’ll be getting too much rest though, mm?”
Xigbar chuckles and then coughs as he inhales a mouthful of tobacco smoke. Luxord’s brows arch gracefully and Demyx gets a tight crinkle between his.
Gibbs’ smile slips. “Y’know, alone? ...Together?”
The responses do not change, though Xigbar manages to get his breathing under control.
Gibbs coughs a bit. “... In bed. ”
Demyx’s cigarette drops to the table as he bursts into laughter. “Axel and Roxas? No fucking way.”
Xigbar’s not laughing anymore as he retrieves the thing and replaces it. His fingertips linger too long on Demyx’s lips, as he catches Gibbs’ eye. The corner of his lip quirks up and he nods as if in approval. “You see it too, eh?”
Luxord sets down his drink with a harsh objecting sound. “What utter nonsense...”
Gibbs nods sagely, eyeing the crowded tables, sailors of all flags gathering under his roof day in and day out. “Working here, life I’ve led, I’ve seen just about everything.”
Luxord leans back in his seat, posture impeccable as ever and smiles, resting his wrists on the tabletop. “Don’t be so sure of that.”
Gibbs sighs. Much as he despises arrogance, he can’t expect these men to believe a humble pub keeper’s seen cursed Aztec gold and skeleton crews. He opts to move on. “I’m just grateful nothing’s befallen the dear young lads.”
Grinning through another puff of smoke, Xigbar taps the rim of Gibbs’ drink, a silent entreaty for him to take it up again and stop killing the mood. “Like you said, the only thing to befall Axel’s cabin boy is Axel.”
“Don’t be so harsh, Sniper.” Gibbs draws the tankard nearer, cocks his head obligingly. “I do believe Roxas is quite content with that particular position.”
“If not, I’m sure Axel can think of a few more,” Xigbar retorts and they both laugh outright.
Luxord tsks, head shaking. “Axel’d boil you alive for suggesting such a thing.”
“Only ‘cause it’s true.” Xigbar winks, turning to wrap an arm around Demyx’s shoulders and see how he’s taking the news.
Demyx doesn’t pull away, wrapping a hand over Xigbar’s to keep him in place, but he does lean back, skepticism tugging his face at strange angles. “Don’t be ridiculous, Xiggy. Axel’s always complaining about getting stuck on missions with zombie kid.”
Xigbar’s smile turns indulgent. “And I used to complain about training you. Had to teach you everything under the sun and keep you out of the firing range of the others. Was fucking exhausting, mind you, because, first off, you were so damn lazy and, second, you were so damn distracting… ”
His arm flexes, drawing Demyx closer, and receives a sheepish smile and shrug in return. “Well, the distracting part was to make you less of a hardass so I could get back to the lazy part.” His lips draw closer to Xigbar’s ear, tone quieter, “And I’m pretty sure I did awesome.”
“Tch.” Xigbar pats Demyx’s leg with his free hand. “Small price to pay.”
Luxord leans wearily on one fist, propped against the table, but his tone remains proper and confident as ever, “So what I believe you’re saying is you might be projecting.”
Xigbar barely glances at him, grin turning somehow smugger, as Demyx leans back and stretches a leg across his lap. “What I’m saying is I know what I’m talking about.”
“What about Xion?” Luxord proposes. “She seems quite taken with our Roxas.”
Gibbs’ mouth opens in silent inquiry, further proof that he’s learned entirely too much, milling about the table of this fascinatingly strange set of foreigners while his bartender and waitstaff run his business for him.
“Xion’s our—er—other cabin boy,” Luxord adds.
Xigbar’s gold eye rolls and his chuckle is cold. “If by ‘taken,’ you mean they’ve said more than three words to each other, then sure. Poppet’s probably hearing wedding bells.”
As he speaks, Xigbar slides back the coat caught on Demyx’s leg and begins to lazily massage his calf through cool, form-fitting black trousers.
Demyx’s eyes slip half shut and he looks about ready to start purring. Xigbar removes his other arm from the back of Demyx’s chair to draw a circle in the air with his cigarette. “Meanwhile, her groom-to-be spends every spare second following around a certain tall, flirtatious red-head…”
“Speak of the red devil,” Gibbs mumbles in near a hush, as if he fears he may actually have summoned them.
Gibbs nods toward pub’s crowded entrance. The door has just slammed open, banging into the wall, and in darts a scarecrow of a man in a glossy black coat and ostentatious, gold trimmed, captain’s hat that doesn’t quite smother a mane of pure Scottish red hair. The man looks around, nods, adjusting his coat, and glances over his shoulder. The door swings again, crying out on its hinges, and in sprints a short, slim black coat topped by a fine brown tricorn hat. He stands for a second, hands above his knees, catching his breath as the one in the captain’s hat squeezes his shoulder and whispers something that makes the smaller one glance up abruptly, grin, and swat the hand off.
“They together?” Xigbar asks, leaning to see past other tables until he spots the pair. “Well, well, well. You’re a gambling man, Lucky. Tell me, what are the odds?”
Luxord watches his coworkers’ entrance with a critical eye, but sees nothing unusual in the nuances of their brief, harried conversation.  “Still slim to nothing, Xiggy. ”
“Well, reckon, I ought to…” Gibbs starts, rising to go fetch them, only to find both of his arms held fast by Luxord and Xigbar, both of whom are looking not at him, but each other.
“I bet you five hundred munny their lips will meet by the end of the night.”
“Is that a genuine wager?”
“Gibbs can set the terms.”
“I’m listening.”
They release Gibbs’ arms and he crosses them in thought. He’s presided over many a gamble and this one seems straightforward enough and relatively harmless to boot. He could set ground rules, but he can’t imagine these fellows will play by them, so best not to bother.
Gibbs nods. “Five hundred... munny, was it?” The currency sounds almost made up, but the men nod. “And a free bar tab next time ‘round,” Gibbs adds to sweeten the pot and make the competition all the more entertaining. “If Red Jack and his bonny lad kiss by the end of the night, Sniper wins. If not, the Gambler and the Bard triumph.” He waggles his finger in the air seriously, “There’ll be no telling Red Jack and the cabin boy about the bet, otherwise anything goes.”
Xigbar reaches out a gloved palm and Luxord gives it a neat shake, before patting the thigh splayed across his. “Demyx? You in?”
“… you’re worse than that sea witch in Atlantica.”
“Damn straight I am.”
Demyx’s suddenly weary eyes examine the determined set of Xigbar’s jaw, the laughter lines born of a zillion cruel jokes crinkling at the edge of his eye.
Demyx sighs heavily. “Ugh, fine.” He scoops up the deck of cards Luxord had passed him some time ago, and passes them back with his left hand while clasping Xigbar’s with his right. “But next time we are either playing strip poker or Go Fish.”

The Seven Deadly Sins in a Relationship
LUST: very strong sexual desire
Their story started the way many stories start in today’s time and place.
After a night long of stolen glances, coy smiles - a silent invitation inside the deafening club and a small nod given by Camilla, culminated in the couple heading to the closest swankiest hotel.
As soon as the door of the rented suite was behind them, clothes were discarded and limbs entangled. Their lips searched each other’s, thirsty for the taste of what they had been promising each other all night. Their hips and limbs bumped and collided against fixtures as they blindly made their way to the awaiting bed.
“Camilla,” she mentioned breathlessly.
“What?” He asked, turning to face her, his eyebrows drawing together. His breath was heavy and his eyes a little unfocused. He didn’t remember asking anything.
“My name,” she clarified cupping his jaw, pulling his lips to hers. “Camilla. I don’t want you calling me baby or honey or some overuse unimaginative corny nickname.”
He chuckled and nodded his head before resuming the magic he was creating on that special spot he had found just behind her ear.
“Lucas,” he murmured against the column of her neck making shivers run down her spine. “My name. I want to hear you scream it in pleasure.”
“So sure of it?” She said with a smile.
To her dismay, he stopped. She opened her eyes to find beautiful hazel ones framed by thick lashes. “Are you challenging me?” He asked with a quirky smile.
“Maybe.” She replied giving in to the temptation to kiss his inviting lips.
“I do like a challenge,” he declared. Camilla searched for his lips but couldn’t catch them as he laid quick pecks on her chin, neck and moving down between the dip of her breast and then even lower.
Her hand pressed against the back of his, the one pressed against her breast. The pebbled nipples poking his palm; and her hips bucked against his face. Camilla bit her full lower lip stifling that sound of pleasure. She wasn’t going to give in so easily. If he wanted to hear his name on her lips, he had to do -
Her eyes flew open and her lips made a perfect O at what the tandem of his fingers and his tongue were doing.
Camilla ended up using his name a lot more than he used hers which didn’t sit well with her competitive spirit. The ribbing she got from him as pillow talk made her issue a challenge which he happily obliged. They counted orgasms that night.
At dawn the score was a tie.
They didn’t exchange more than a couple of coherent sentences between them that night, but it was enough for them to decide to exchange numbers and decide that the score had to be settled, most conveniently after dinner the following night.
GLUTTONY: habitual greed or excess in eating
The quickest way to a man’s heart is through his stomach. The same applies for women.
One dinner turned to two which turned to three which turned to four. Another area they liked to explore and share, and were very passionate about was food.
They took turns at finding a new restaurant, a new cuisine, at sharing what they enjoyed about the food, about the culture. Lucas took her to his favorite French restaurant on their first date, impressing her with his knowledge of the language and his taste in wine. That was one luxurious sensual night the two would fondly remember.
Camilla took him to a small intimate Japanese restaurant. The sushi chef prepared sushi right in front of them. They got to watch a seasoned master showcase his expertise. In between bites they took the time to get to know each other. Something they weren’t able to do during their first date as both were enjoying a game of footsie under the table while they smirked and flirted.  The relatively more casual environment of the Japanese restaurant let them be more relaxed and comfortable to open up. They held hands when they walked out of the restaurant.
Somehow, that act felt even more intimate than their previous nights together.
An article on a pop-up restaurant was shared on Facebook by a friend and Lucas’s first thought upon reading the article was to invite Camilla. He remembered Camilla mentioning that she had never tried molecular gastronomy before. Lucas was eager to lead her into this new territory, experience her first time with her. He definitely didn’t regret it. He loved watching Camilla’s eyes shine with excitement; he laughed at her sense of humor; he especially enjoyed the sounds of appreciation she made at how rich the matcha mousse was. Lucas would work hard in recreating those sounds in bed later that night.
A couple of days later Camilla was staring at the ceiling still trying to make a decision. On her phone, Lucas’s latest message was still displayed: Where are you taking me tonight beautiful?
It was her turn to decide their date but Camilla was stumped. The previous dates were all so extra she felt like she had to continue the streak. Lucas looked most comfortable in the middle of high class. He took her to expensive French cuisine and then to molecular gastronomy. As much as Camilla enjoyed that, she felt a little out of depth. Opening her closet she found that her three good evening dresses had all been worn before. If she brought him to that Greek restaurant she felt like she had to dress up at least a little.
Camilla sighed. Was this how it was going to be from now on? She loved lux as much as any girl but she wondered if Lucas was only about that. This was no one night stand, this was no hook-up anymore. They were in constant communication, they had escalated to having private jokes, they were dating.
Dating.
The word felt foreign but she knew this was the proper label to their situation now. Dating meant assessing the other as a possible partner. Did she want that?
Yes.
The question had barely formed in her head that the answer was already spoken. She wouldn’t mind dating Lucas, which meant she needed to see if they really were compatible.
Camilla quickly sent Lucas a reply and then grabbed a shirt and jeans before heading to the bathroom to prepare.
***
Lucas’s meeting ran a little later than he anticipated. He had hoped to go home and clean-up but instead now he was rushing to the restaurant Camilla had decided on. He checked his Cartier and hissed. He started to jog, apologizing as he bumped into people or cut them. He was a sight, His tailor-made dark suit jacket flapping, his Italian leather shoes put to undue stress as he rushed through the throng of mall goers. He looked around, arriving at the 3rd floor of the mall where most of the restaurants were.
Lucas spotted the neon sign reading “Prime” and sighed in relief only for that relief to be short lived seeing Camilla just a few meters in front of him. He picked up the pace and as he passed her, he called her name getting her attention.
“What are you doing?” She asked as he jogged to the front of the restaurant.
“Two tables for me and my late date here,” He told the waitress and winked at her.
“I’m not late,” Camilla said as she joined him by the entrance.
Lucas just smiled and offered her his arm, and then following the waitress to their table.
Lucas thanked the waitress over the menu, and she asked them to call if they had any questions or were ready to order.
“You could have just walked with me,” Camilla told him.
“What impression would I make arriving after the lady?” He asked. “I’m trying to make a good impression here.”
“Which is why you’re in a three-piece suit?” Camilla asked.
Lucas chuckled, embarrassed, and trained his eye on the menu. Camilla didn’t look too impressed.
“I apologize. Meeting ran a little long,” he explained and she nodded.
“No, I apologize,” she said. “This obviously is not your comfort zone. Would you like to leave?”
Lucas’s forehead scrunched.
“Ah yes, I’m not dressed for a fancy restaurant,” Camilla remarked which brought Lucas’s attention away from her beautiful brown eyes to her clothes. Lucas’s lips formed a smile at the design of her blouse, it had small fries printed on it.
‘I think your blouse is very cute. I have socks with a similar print. I love fries,” Lucas looked thru the menu “Yes! They have waffle cut fries! They’re the best!” He said excitedly which seemed to take away the tension off Camilla’s shoulders.
“Those are just fat chips. We want fries, and fries are long and thin,” Camilla replied giving him a smile.
“Waffle cut fries hold on dips or sauces much better than regular fries.”
The two launched into a long debate on fries which then turned into a conversation on burgers and whether to eat them with a knife and fork.
“Those people are just animals!” Lucas said. “A good burger needs to be eaten with the hands. If the meat juices and the sauces don’t drip to your elbows, was the burger even juicy?”
Camilla laughed. “That poor beautiful suit.”
Lucas promptly took off his jacket and folded the sleeves of his dress shirt. “I’m ready.”
Camilla was glad to see that Lucas just radiated sophistication but wasn’t -
“A snob?” He said the word with palpable disgust.
“Well, you kept bringing me to fancy places and you looked so comfortable in them,” Camilla tried to explain.
“Well now I feel a little snobby.”
“No! You’re not! You’re great! Really! You’re not a snob. I see that now. You just look good in the middle of high society and between common mortals.”
Camilla watched for his reaction but he returned her gaze.
“Keep telling me how good I am. Go on,” He urged her but the small tremble on the corner of his lips gave away that he was teasing her.
She threw a small fry at him and he roared in laughter.
“You said you liked Asian food,” Lucas recalled from their previous date. “I wanted to take you to the whole in the wall near my office. They make the best Pad Thai but I think even like that you’re overdressed.”
“I’ll come in my PJs. They’re the most comfortable clothes I own.” She replied with a smile.
“Ohh! I can just imagine. Cotton. Long sleeves. Buttoned up to the neck. Sexy.” He bit his lip before both of them burst out laughing.
SLOTH: excessive laziness or the failure to act and utilize one’s talents
When the honeymoon phase dies down makeup starts to fade, suits aren’t as crisp and a pickup lines start to run out, and a routine starts to settle in the relationship.
What they initially saw as exciting in the beginning of their relationship was starting to feel overrated. Dancing till three in the city’s best nightclubs was getting tiring. Dinner dates in the hottest new restaurant with the most promising chefs, or finding a hidden gem of a dish was not as exciting as before. The two slowly started spending more and more time on each other’s couch snacking on delivered meals and binging old TV series.
Camilla realized they were no longer in the honeymoon phase when she farted and it took a full minute for both of them to realize that the sound came from her. Camilla’s first reaction was to jump on her feet, ready to sprint, but she didn’t run away because she was stopped by the loud boisterous laugh of her boyfriend.
“How did that sound come from you when you’re that small?” He asked holding his sides as he kept quacking in laughter. He took a deep breath and then released a long loud fart.
“I can finally stop clenching my butt cheeks,” he said draping his arms over her shoulders and bringing her close to his side.
Another sign that they had passed the honeymoon phase - the trash that surrounded them. They no longer seemed to care to make a good impression on the other.
“What a mess,” Camilla stated as her eyes landed on the mass of plastic containers from their dinner date and that of previous ones. Bottles of wine lay hazardously on the floor. “We’re pigs.”
“You do sound like one.” He said then blowing a raspberry earning him a slap on the arm from Camilla.
“Clean up after yourself will you,” Camilla said as she continued to flick through the options on Netflix.
“We’re going to make a mess anyways. What’s the point?” Lucas asked, nuzzling the side of her head.
“This is a pigsty.”
“You could clean it.” Lucas suggested and Camilla gave an offended gasp.
“Just because I’m a woman?”
“Just because you’re a better person than me.” Lucas said giving her a big wide grin.
Camilla rolled her eyes.
It didn’t bother either one of them at first how comfortable they had become in the other’s presence taking this as a sign that their relationship had matured into a less physical and shallow relationship.
It didn’t bother them...at first.
ENVY: intense desire to have an item or experience that someone else possesses
One should never compare their relationship with those of others but even if one knows this, they cannot stop themselves from doing it.
She gets envious with how in love other couples looked. Camilla couldn’t remember the last time Lucas and she had an actual date night - the kind they used to have in the beginning of their relationship. The one that left you feeling fuzzy and warm inside. Nowadays she just felt bloated tired after one of their nights in.
Seeing dirty dishes in the sink used to make her chuckle, jokingly remark at how much they ate; now it made her skin crawl at their laziness. Picking up discarded underwear strewn across the place used to make her grin, thinking of the passionate night they shared; now it felt repulsive picking up dirty underwear off dirty floors. Most of all, what she used to think of as a mature relationship was starting to become boring.
In hopes to spice things us, Camilla set up a double date with a work friend of hers. Maybe they’ve been too content sitting in their own bubble, Camilla thought. It was time to remind themselves what it meant to be in the honeymoon stage once again, and to ignite that fire they used to have. She wanted to be excited to see him again, not because that was routine for them.
However, what the date showed Camilla was a relationship she yearned to have. She wanted Lucas to pull her seat for her. She wanted them to bring their heads close together and share a private joke. She wanted them to play footsie together and not get annoyed. She wanted them to make an effort towards each other again. Kisses now felt either obligatory or just a slip of the mind, like raising one’s hand to wave hello or goodbye.
As she listened to her girlfriends discuss their relationships, Camilla only identified more and more faults in her own relationship. She closed herself off more from Lucas, wishing to unsee the flaws in their relationship. She spent more time with friends, claiming she’s been so into the relationship she was losing touch with other people.
Camilla heard distance made the heart grow fonder; she really hoped that was the case.
GREED: excessive pursuit of material good
Once the status quo is disrupted, tension rises.
Lucas noticed small changes here and there, but it took a while for him to see the whole picture. It wasn’t a good picture. He had taken to Camilla like a child takes to sugar. It was instantaneous, it was a high, and he constantly craved it. He wasn’t a relationship kind of guy but when a connection was made, the businessman in him knew better than to let a deal slip through his fingers.
He wasn’t a very good boyfriend, he knew it. He didn’t have much practice in being one. Great bed partner, skilled business partner, but just a general partner...not so much.
He felt hurt when she threw back at him that they were spending too much time with each other. He wanted to spend time with her, isn’t that what a relationship was about? What was the point in having labels if those labels meant nothing. It ate at him that she would prefer to go out with her colleagues rather than stay in with him. It hurt that she was on the phone with others when she was with him. It hurt that she was drifting away.
So he made an effort to show her why she should choose him. He went all out in a romantic weekend out of town. Being in a new place, all the new activities, all the time alone brought them close together. For a little while after the trip everything seemed back to normal until it wasn’t once again.
Lucas wanted to know why Camilla was acting that way. He knew it couldn’t be anything he had done when he was the only one working to make their relationship work. She was the one putting space between them. There was no space between girl/boy and friend, Lucas thought to himself, they should be one unit.
Suspicions rose when Lucas noticed that a certain guy was in many of Camilla’s pictures. He asked her about him, and she laughed at his accusations. If Camilla thought the blasé way she answered him would emphasize how absurd his suppositions were and pacify his fears, she was wrong. It only made him more suspicious. When she bailed on their weekend for a company outing, and he saw the guy too close to Camilla for Lucas’s comfort, the green beast in him was unleashed.
The moment Camilla returned from the trip, the two had heated words. The jealous and possessive side of Lucas came out. The lack of restraint and the intensity in Lucas’s eyes and tone didn’t scare Camilla. She trusted him, she knew he’d never hurt her. Instead, this change in him only aroused her, She played defenseless when he swept her off her feet and onto her back. She let him take lead as he asserted his dominance over her. She parroted the words he wanted to hear, while her hold body and mind was focused at what he was doing to her body.
That night was one to remember for Camilla. She loved the feeling of control and power it gave her. She might have been under him but she knew she was the one driving the situation. She felt empowered knowing she could break Lucas’s cool and evoke such raw emotions from him, drive him wild because of wanting her. She felt desired. She craved the attention he gave. She tried to evoke that roughness in Lucas over and over again. Camilla continued to play, finally finding that spark with Lucas once again.
With every tease of Camilla, with every picture posted of her and that guy, Lucas’s patience got shorter and shorter. His calls to her became more often, his tone more commanding and demanding, his hold suffocating. Everything, everyone, had a limit.
WRATH: uncontrollable anger and hate towards another person
When you let something simmer for a long time, it tends to boil and spill over causing a mess.
Lucas’s mind was filled of scenarios of Camilla leaving him. His fear and love for her drove him to a man he would, down the years, hate. Suspicious of her, doubting himself, paranoia starts to kick in. Feeling cornered he lashes out and Camilla is at the end of his scathing accusations.
She no longer finds it cute. She no longer finds is empowering. Camilla doesn’t want this man, she wants her Lucas back; the one who shared her day with him, who stole her side, who laughed at her jokes and held her at night. She wanted his trust back, she wanted his smile back. Yet all she got was suspicions and sneers.
One night the two couldn’t dance around the issue anymore and finally had words. The discussion turned to a fight, words became insults, the voice got louder and the pitch higher. They threw accusations that they didn’t mean in efforts to protect themselves, shield themselves of the pain the other was inflicting.
And just a quick as the argument rose, it died sending the house into silence. Camilla left Lucas’s place without even slamming the door and that showed just how angry she was. Collected, cold, silent was Camilla’s way of communicating the depth of her anger. On the other hand, Lucas lashed out screaming and wrecking havoc in his living room. He went to bed with all the frustration he felt.
PRIDE: excessive view of one’s self without regard for others
Being right isn't always the best pick.
They’ve had fights before. Stupid fights over which school was better, or where to eat. More serious arguments over contrasting ideological views. But after fighting they always found a way to compromise. Neither of them felt there could be a compromise this time.
Camilla wanted Lucas to see that he was out of line. That he had changed, and not for the better. Lucas wanted Camilla to see that her actions were causing the friction in their relationship. Both stood their ground, waiting for the other to see the error in their ways. Both waiting for the other to come grovelling.
As time passed, their resolved started to wane. They missed each other. They wanted to hear their voice, wanted to share their day, wanted to hold the other. They replayed the scenario over and over in the heads, analyzing everything they said, they did.
Camilla knew she shouldn’t have pushed Lucas, she should have raised her concerns over their relationship getting stagnant.  Lucas agreed that he had started to act unnaturally; but his fear of losing her had taken the driver’s seat. He knew that he should have trusted her because he did. He knew she was a better person than he let himself believe.
They talked about their situation with everyone but each other. Their friends sided with them, agreed that the other should be the one to humble themselves, to seek the other. Lucas and Camilla’s ego got stroked by well meaning friends reminding them they were great people who had a multitude of options waiting out in the world if the other didn’t see their value, and that it was the other’s loss if they didn’t see the error in their ways.
Neither wanted to reach out first, Neither wanting to admit they were wrong. Neither took a chance to make things right.
Unfortunately, their story ended the way many stories end at this time and age.
The End

He reaches out to thumb Oikawa’s upper lip, hand cupping his jaw. The freckle doesn’t feel any different than the skin around it, lotion soft and deep, like he’s got an extra layer of lambsear over it. Oikawa’s breath puffs into his palm. “Okay,” he mumbles, lip moving under Hajime’s callous, “that’s pretty weird.” Hajime jerks his hand away and swallows his third apology of the day. “You had- snow on your face,” he grumbles [...]. (”Sweetshrub”, queerplatonic IwaOi)
loveclouds (if you like your IwaOi fluffy)
“I wouldn’t be anywhere without you, Iwa-chan,” he says. “I’m only strong when you’re here, Iwa-chan,” he says. “I’d go anywhere you wanted, Iwa-chan,” he says. (”1000 ways to die with you”, Iwa-chan is so lovely that it literally kills Oikawa.)
snoqualmie
“I know you,” Iwaizumi says firmly. “I know you,” Tooru repeats, cupping his face again and pulling him close. Their foreheads press together and Iwaizumi’s eyes close. He takes a deep breath in. “There’s more, though, that we should know. We have to. We have to go other place and do other things.” (”Going”, IwaOi contemplate their future.)
tothemoon (check out her supernatural series, “ad astra”)
All sorts of proud, eyes unable to tear themselves away, Hajime just nods. He leans forward just to get a better look, completely entranced. "He's worked hard for this," he can't help but remark. "Oh? Do you know him, young man?" Iwaizumi would like to think he does. When he watches Tooru toss his hair back, all to giggle and pretend and preen, he notices the way his eyes flick to the audience—just for that one, fleeting moment—because they both know that afraid is something that never leaves someone. Still, as soon their eyes meet, he lets Oikawa tear away in that instant, because he needs to finish his part of the show. All at once, Oikawa Tooru shows everyone why he is a showstopper, grand and like a god. But Iwaizumi knows he is also a boy hiding in houses, looking up at ceilings he might not be able to break. When he decides that someone can be both, and that this is okay, he squints at the sight of his best friend and answers her in full faith. "I do." (And he's sure, at that moment, that Oikawa Tooru is the most beautiful thing he's ever, ever seen.) (”400 Lux”, Iwaizumi and Oikawa come from different dimensions.)
Canon compliant / Post-Canon
“3.5 millimeters” by Anonymous (6.2k) - “There are, after all, no guides for how the hell you’re supposed to handle being in love with your best friend.” Established relationship, first dates and waking up together.
“What is it?” “It’s not scary for you?” Oikawa whispered. Iwaizumi was silent. Oikawa continued, “I love this, and touching you, and everything”—Iwaizumi’s heart stuttered—“but aren’t you ever nervous and embarrassed and—terrified?”
“Aquamarine” by carriecmoney (3.8k) - Graduation looms close and our favorite Seijou third years more or less resolve their gay crises. Funny, sweet, very well written (some great imagery, as always).
“Hey! Matsukawa and Hanamaki are kissing!” Oikawa and Hajime freeze against each other, Oikawa’s nails digging into Hajime’s neck. Some people run to see for themselves, some mutter, but most cheer and raise a glass. Hajime swallows, the lightning rod of Oikawa highlighted against his side. “I guess we should make sure they’re okay,” Hajime says, but doesn’t move. Oikawa nods, but does the same. Hajime coughs, grip tightening around Oikawa’s ankle. “Guess it took ‘em long enough, huh?”
“boat song” by perbe (1.4k) - Iwa-chan helps Tooru sleep. “So pretty, soft and artful”, to quote softsun. (Also, Oiks’ “new” insult for Iwa-chan.. why didn’t I think of this? lol).
You tip yourself to the edge of your bed and tilt your face up at Iwa-chan. It is a long way up, you notice. Somehow this strikes you as poetic. That when you reach up, your hand barely grazes his shoulder and you feel silly, and so, so gay, when he steps in so your hand isn’t dangling over thin air. It makes sense that you waggle your eyebrows at him and adopt the smuggest grin that you can.
“days fall away” by lavendrsblue (17k) - Iwaizumi and Oikawa reconnect after university. The characterizations are spot-on, in my opinion, especially how they both deal with their feelings. A real IwaOi manifesto. The fight is great as well (though angst-y, of course).
The thing about knowing someone for a decade and a half is that they know your every strength and weakness, every insecurity. Even the ones you yourself are not fully aware of, those that haven’t surfaced in years. “Iwaizumi’s so good at everything, where would Oikawa Tooru be without him?” Oikawa’s voice climbs higher in pitch, mocking, but he isn’t shouting. He’s not even at normal speaking volume; he slings words over the futon in near-whispers. “Nowhere, probably, he’s so clingy and desperate—”
“Diluculum” by Moami (6.2k) - Tooru gets a mental breakdown before trying out for Japan’s national team. Luckily, Hajime is there.
“Please.” He never begs, and it makes Tooru lift his head. Hajime stares at their joined hands, darker and pale, warm and bruised. “Tell me. I want to help. Don’t do this shit on your own.” “To lose again.” Hajime stares up at him. The blankets slide off Tooru’s cheeks. His face is hollow. “I’m scared to lose again. To lose everything,” he whispers.
“film reel life” by arsenicjay (8k) - Hajime’s and Tooru’s life after graduation, watched through a camera lens.
“If Oikawa sees this, I think you’ll be too occupied to bother with little old me.” Something cracks with Iwaizumi’s expression: a flicker to the tense set of his jaw, and the subtle twist of his lip. To the left of the picture frame, the tendons in his wrist tighten momentarily, where his hand rests on the table. “Hanamaki,” he says. The microphone manages to pick up the barest tremor to his voice. “C’mon. Turn it off.” A pause. There’s a jarring moment when the camera clatters onto the table, and overhead, Hanamaki says, “Wow, you actually have it bad, huh—”
“(I wanna be) The Very Best” by Hyeyu (3.2k) - Oikawa plays Pokemon Go and IwaOi ensues.
Something flickers lightning-quick across Oikawa’s face. “Ugh, so  dull, Iwa-chan. I’m surprised you haven’t bored her to death yet.” The dismissive statement shatters the lap-fantasy faster than a bucketful of cold water. It sucks to be reminded that Oikawa has probably showered that damned Snorlax with more loving affection in the past few minutes than he has Hajime in months. Hajime and Oikawa are best friends - that’s the status quo, that’s how it will likely remain. “Oh, fuck off, Oikawa. I’m dumb and ugly, I get it. Happy now?”
“mint” by tothemoon (18.8k) - Hajime leaves for New York, says goodbye to and makes promises with Oikawa. Perfection and Oikawa’s desire for it as a theme, a chatroom for Oikawa’s fans (and Oikawa), Mattsun and Makki are there, too. Writing is as eloquent as expected.
[...] the smallest movements arise, and Iwaizumi notes their closeness—legs touching, the shift of Oikawa's head—and Iwaizumi registers these seconds as the longest he's ever had to live through. From there they just wait for the time to run out, three, two, one, smile! and Iwaizumi can’t help but feel something terrible stir inside him. Like having the weight of Oikawa on him is something he'd like to keep.
“old and new” by Mysecretfanmoments (5.4k) - Hajime and Tooru meet for the first time after going to different universities.
“Are you going to be like this for all of break?” “Maybe,” Tooru said. “Depends on how much you distract me.” Hajime’s eyes flew open. That was flirting. It had to be—and yet, he and Tooru didn’t flirt. They were teammates, best friends, and Hajime was nursing something that felt a lot like a crush—but they didn’t flirt.
“summer came like cinnamon” by ohhotlamb (4.1k) - Sweaty-summer-get-together IwaOi.
[...] a part of Tooru is beginning to feel restless regardless of the heat, a little itch that rises up underneath his skin like a swarm of particularly brutish ants. He wants to move, to do something, something that doesn’t involve giving into the urge of rolling over and taking Hajime’s hand, doesn’t involve resting his head on Hajime’s belly and letting himself be gently moved with each inhale, each exhale. The kicker is that that he always wants these things, even when it’s not quite as comfortable as this. (Tooru is so in love.)
“the courtship ritual of the hercules beetle” by kittebasu (66.3k) - Tooru’s girlfriend breaks up with him and Iwaizumi (playing on the national team!) reenters his life. Homophobia is a big one here. I’d call this one a classic, it’s just so good.
[...] Tooru can hear a buzzing in his ears, louder than summer cicadas, and louder than the ocean, when he is unable to tear his eyes away. Hajime turns around, light catching wherever ocean water sits atop the golden brown of his skin, and his smile is easy and carefree, like the Iwa-chan Tooru recalls from middle school summer vacations, back when they were still young enough that being outside with no obligations was the best thing in the world. It's the Iwa-chan Tooru had been miserable without, and Tooru is so--
“the luck of the universe” by themorninglark (1.5k) - Hajime gets Oikawa and himself omikuji before they seperate for university. I love the characterizations in this!
"Do you feel lucky, Iwa-chan?" Oikawa whispers. Ahead of them, a bell tolls. Hands clap together in prayer. Iwaizumi doesn't turn around. "I know I am," he says.
“What He Knows” by hiuythn (1.1k) - Tooru knows Hajime will find out eventually. A little sad, very sweet. Iwa-chan indulging Oikawa’s whims (I love).
“And here I thought you’d agree with me. Aren’t they just sea aliens, if you think about it?” Iwaizumi turns his head and smiles, just a tiny curve of his lips. Oikawa scoffs to cover up the way the warm, happy thing in his sternum that lights up because of that smile. “Don’t distract me with my love for space, Iwa-chan. Atlantis is real.” “I never said it wasn’t,” Iwaizumi holds up his hands, completely relaxed, amusement just rolling off him in waves. Oikawa loves when he gets like this, likes it just a bit too much.
Not exactly canon compliant
“have mercy on me” by hiuythn (10.5k) - Hajime gets the Hanahaki disease, flowers growing in his lungs, caused by (not actually) unrequited love. This has some of my favorite IwaOi (fanfic) moments, especially those showing Oikawa’s softer side.
“If something like that happens to you, you’ll let me know first, right? That you like someone enough to grow flowers in your heart?” There’s a curious sort of tone in Oikawa’s voice. Hajime snorts, not bothering to answer and Oikawa huffs but drops it.
“Mind Reader” by jopling (40.8k) - After being hit in the head by a volleyball, Iwaizumi can read minds and picks up on Oikawa’s warm fuzzy feelings towards him. I enjoyed this mainly because of the vision for their university life (living together, different universities, rivalry...) and the healthy dose of volleyball. Very nsfw.
Iwaizumi moves and rests his head on Oikawa's shoulder, closing his eyes as he takes in deep breaths to calm his mind. [...] He doesn’t know what he’s doing, but he tries to think of what Oikawa’s thinking about, but it doesn’t seem like something he can will on his own, so nothing comes up. So he just asks anyway. "What are you thinking about?" Iwaizumi asks, and he realizes he'd bone-tired and sleepy because it comes out softer than he had intended. There's a small pause and he can feel Oikawa swallow. He sees his fist clench tighter on his lap before he answers, "Um. Milk bread."
“put a light on” by seabear (6.6k) - Tooru is confronted with university choices and a rather huge crush on his best friend.
Tooru’s thumbs fly against the tiny keypad. i love him i love him goddammit i love him what the HELL “Hey,” Iwa-chan’s there suddenly, his face so close. Eyes flickering down. “Who do you love?”
“to shore” by perbe (5.6k) - Iwa-chan disappears in the summer before college and leaves puzzle pieces behind  for Oikawa to put together. Lovely, atmospheric writing. Great Oikawa characterization.
Though you are surrounded by thick grass in the middle of May, you forget how to feel warmth. “Why are you so worried?” You expect him to think about it, but his answer is immediate. You wonder if he’s been waiting for this question, and if this is the answer he prepared. “Just a general feeling that things are changing too fast.” You can’t stand it, so you say, “I can give you a constant.”
AUs
“dyspnea/arrhythmia” by carafin (10.8k) - Junior doctor Iwaizumi’s mentor is one Oikawa Tooru.
Oikawa winks, honest-to-god winks at Iwaizumi. ‘It’s just me. I’m irresistible.’ Iwaizumi stares at him, rendered momentarily speechless. For someone whose bedside manners are impeccable, Oikawa seems to have absolutely no working knowledge of workplace appropriate behaviour. ‘I was kidding, don’t look at me like that,’ Oikawa says, and laughs. ‘It just comes with practice.’ ‘Right,’ Iwaizumi says, a little doubtfully, but he does a poor job at hiding his smile.
“Everything You Fear to Lose” by SuggestiveScribe (series, 26.1k) - Star Wars AU. Oikawa is a sith, Iwaizumi is a jedi - an absolute must. Epic, very angsty and emotional.
Tooru's legs were carrying him in long strides next to Master Takeda, gaze tipped slightly downward. "--we've been over this," Takeda went on. Hajime was keeping his eyes forward, lips pursed into a straight line. Tooru's attempts were all in vain, and Hajime was very well aware of it. "Just let me go with him," Tooru said, pressing his hand to his chest. "I can--" Master Takeda shook his head, "Listen, I understand you and Hajime have forged a..." Takeda's eyes slipped off to the side as they walked, considering. "A very strong bond," he eventually finished.
“In Defense of Reptiles (and Other Gross Things)” by rikke (9.3k) - Harry Potter AU. Oikawa is Hogwarts’ champion in the Triwizard Tournament.
Because for all that the school has joked about it since the lake incident, Iwaizumi never considered it a possibility—a real, actual possibility—and then he remembers the way Oikawa’s knuckles were white clutched around his shoulders in the lake, and the expression on his face after Iwaizumi saw him with Ushijima, and oh. Oh.
“In the Subtleties of Certain Colors“ by plumtrees (7.3k) - Oikawa is a painter in love with Dancer!Iwa-chan. The description of the painting and dancing scenes is just so good... ugh.
It always feels so intimate, painting Iwaizumi like this, like he’s bringing the image to life from a few specks of graphite and pigment on paper to the Iwaizumi Hajime that breathes and exudes life through everything he does, from his passion for dance to the way he so earnestly cares for people. I love you he whispers as he crafts the pale imitation, like it will possibly give him the strength to say those exact words to the real thing.
“midnight boy/sunset town” by carafin (10.1k) - Hajime’s new roommate doesn’t sleep.
5 Reasons Why Iwaizumi Hajime's Flatmate Is A Complete Weirdo (An Incomplete List) 1. He's obsessed with that stupid bucket list of his. 2. He's the proud owner of seven truly ugly, criminally hideous movie posters with aliens on them, which he insists on pasting all over the damn living room. 3. He's always stealing Hajime's sweatshirts. 4. Sometimes, he wakes Hajime up for breakfast. At 5AM. On Saturday mornings. 5. He literally never, ever sleeps
“Puzzleball” by carriecmoney (10.6k) - A:TLA AU. Oikawa is a rich kid in Ba Sing Se, Iwaizumi is a Dai Li Agent watching his family. Follows them falling in love with each other and a better life for themselves, very well written and romantic.
Iwaizumi stills, pastry hanging from his mouth and hand on the gate latch, watching Tooru twirl and laugh, head thrown back, fur collar brushing his cheeks. Melting flakes stick to his hair, disappearing into rain like those that hit the too-warm earth; he is both eight and eighteen, a small child’s heart caged by a head too adult for his own good. Iwaizumi’s thoughts are stuck like his tongue to frozen metal.
“you’ll never wait so long” by newamsterdam (13.7k) - Doctor Iwaizumi’s husband Oikawa is a lawyer with troubles he has to keep secret. Married IwaOi, such.. perfection.
Oikawa growls, low in his throat. He grabs Iwaizumi by the collar of his shirt, moving so quickly that Iwaizumi barely realizes he’s moving until Oikawa has him backed up against the wall opposite the sink. Oikawa spends so much time singing odes to Iwaizumi’s physique that it’s sometimes easy to forget how strong Oikawa is, himself. The kiss is powerful and biting. Oikawa shoves Iwaizumi roughly into the wall, attacking his lips with tongue and teeth. Iwaizumi knows every way that Oikawa can kiss him, but this one hasn’t made an appearance in a while.
IwaOi + (polyamory)
“adolescence and all its glory” by pageleaf (20k) - UshiIwaOi. Iwa-chan meets Ushiwaka in his anatomy class and tells Oikawa about it. Falling in love happens.
“Get coffee with me.” Ushijima says. It’s almost a request. He’s still sitting down, so he has to look up at Iwaizumi. Wait. What? “What?” Iwaizumi says, like a broken record. “Coffee,” Ushijima says slowly. Like it’s a perfectly reasonably request, and Iwaizumi is just being dense. Iwaizumi shakes his head. “No.”
“Caravan” by carriecmoney (162.1k)  - DaiIwaOi. A:TLA AU, Sequel to “Puzzleball”. Daichi joins Oikawa, Iwaizumi and the rest of the trade envoy on their way to the Northern Water Tribe, makes some (boy)friends along the way. Don’t forget to take a look at “Minivan”, a sexy/fluffy “behind the scenes” IwaOi Drabble Collection.
“Scared?” Daichi blinked over at Hajime, his arms crossed and dimple deep. Daichi rolled his eyes. “Oh, don’t even.” He cuffed Hajime’s shoulder. “You won’t hurt me.” Hajime chuckled. “And I guess after the day you’ve had, you’re used to humiliation.” Daichi gasped, and Hajime threw back his head with his laugh. He had put his undershirt back on when the sun got below the mountain peaks, but his arms were still on display, a source of Ryuu’s envy and Tooru’s distraction since their first drills back inside the wall. He beamed at Daichi, teeth flashing in the dusk glow and firebender torchlight. “I think it’s time to give them what they came for, eh, boss?” “Go suck a rock,” Daichi said with a smile and a flip of the back of his hand. Hajime thumbed his nose as they parted to square off a decent distance from each other. “Everybody ready up there?” Daichi called in his field voice, not taking his eyes off Hajime.
