So The Kids Are Robots Now...
"Miko," Ratchet groaned, "you need to scan something smaller."
"Your face needs to scan something smaller!"
Miko insisted that her reply would have been hilarious... if her hood hadn't conked her on the head again.
"Your armor is too loose!" the medic insisted, "I get that you like Bulkhead's vehicular form, but you need to accept that you're beter off scanning the Miata!"
Miko gasped in horror, "You take that back!"
Arcee rolled her eyes as she walked in, "They're still at it?"
"Yep," yepped Raf, "I think I'm getting better at this though."
He transformed down into his chosen form, an orange Vespa. This time he managed to stay on his tires, instead of falling over the way he had every other time he'd tried that.

Out of the three, Raf was the one that was happiest with his transformation. He was still the shortest in the group, shorter than Arcee even, but at a mere ten feet tall, he was still able to access most of the rooms he was used to.
For her part, Miko was barely taller than Arcee and mourned that she couldn't match Bulkhead's vehicle mode.
Not that it stopped her from trying.
"Fine, do me a favor and transform."
Miko grinned and transformed down... sort of.
The oversized armor was so loose, it kept jamming and catching on itself at every joint. It took her almost a full minute to settle into a Hummer.
"See? I told you it was fine!"
Instead of pointing out the obvious, Ratchet pressed down on her front bumper.
"OWOWOWOWOW!"
"Loose armor strains the joints," he scolded, "there's a reason I gave you a compatibility list!"
"They were all sports cars!"
Bumblebee asked what was wrong with sports cars.
"Nothing! I just like my cars with a little more muscle,"she whined as she transformed back up, taking almost as long to do so as she did to transform down, "I need- ow ow ow! My fender's stuck in my...! Something!"
Ratchet sighed and grabbed her by the back of the neck, lifting her like a cat before shaking her to loosen her jammed armor.
"...Thanks."
"IF I find you a vehicle that fits your mass and comes with off-road capabilities, would you consider scanning it?"
"Ugh, FINE! You're no fun."
After another hour of searching, they eventually found a car she liked. A dune buggy was, in her words, a mini-Bulkhead. It took her little time to modify her paint into an artistic mess of black, dark purples, and hot pink accents.

"All right, now that that's over with," grumbled Ratchet, "I need a status update from Optimus on Jackson's vehicle form."
"Yeah, where did they take Jack?" asked Raf.
"Well, we didn't have any scans compatible with Jack's frame on hand," Arcee pointed out, "so Optimus and Bulkhead loaded him into a train to find him... something."
She trailed off as the sound of rotors, very big rotors, got closer.
Peeking out Miko sulked immediately, "Man! Some people have all the luck."
A search and rescue helicopter landed on the tarmac, with Bulkhead and Optimus arriving shortly after.

"I'm not sure Jack would agree," pointed out Arcee.
Jack shifted and transformed, forcing Miko to crane her neck upwards and walk backwards to see his eyes. She thought he looked awesome with the rotors turning into a cape of sorts, but he mostly looked awkward and uncomfortable. He towered over even Optimus, who barely reached his waist.
"I'm uh, I'm gonna go lay down."
He had to crouch to enter the hangar.
"Think Fowler can find us a bigger base?" asked Bulkhead.
"For Jackson's sake, I certainly hope so."
"I still don't get why he's pouting," muttered Miko, "his hands are bigger than my whole body!"
They all gave her a look.
"Miko, I understand your excitement with the situation," Optimus sighed as he knelt to better see her optic-to-optic, "but while this will be a difficult situation to adjust to for you and Rafael, Jackson has the added troubles that come from a frame his size."
"Well, yeah, but it's badass! I mean, he could probably punt Megatron into next week now!"
"Jackson has requested to provide a support role. His chosen vehicle form reflects that. He will fight when he has to, but his focus will be in the evacuation of civilians."
"And you are also staying clear of the front lines," Bulkhead cut in before she could get any ideas, "you're unarmed and untrained. Until that's corrected, you're on evac duty IF you're on the field at all."
"WHAT!? Come on, I've been on the field before!"
"Not with our permission," he countered, "and now that you're a bigger target, you're not leaving the base without permission again."
"Aw, come on Bulk! I thought we were buds!"
"We are... but now I'm also your mentor and commanding officer, which means fun time is on a schedule now."
"Aw..."
"Now come on... we're starting with shooting lessons."
Miko perked up at that, allowing her partner to walk her to the range.
"So... that was the easy part," pointed out Arcee, "who's telling June?"
"I have informed her of the situation," Optimus reported, "she was held up by an emergency at her workplace, but she should be here shortly."
"Great, I'm going for a nice, long-."
"As his partner, I believe you should be here as well."
"...Are you scared of the teeny tiny human, Prime?"
"I am concerned that her initial assessment was correct," he admitted, "the children have been irrevocably changed by their involvement with us in ways we have failed to predict."
"...And you're scared of the teeny tiny human."
He raised an eyebrow, "Are you not?"
"Terrified."

no, actually, where is the whimsy?
my ex had a best friend named larry who asked me once: what do you think comes after irony?
we were at the bar where larry worked. it was a quiet night, and he'd hopped over to sit with us on the patron side. i swirled the lemon around my limoncello martini.
earnest positivity, i said, while my ex said, art self-destructs.
i stared at my ex. he stared at me.
his argument was the cinemasins argument: look how bad media is becoming! look at the loopholes and the dumb shit!
it was roughly 2011. galaxy print was still in. at the time, i had a favorite shirt that was a wolf howling at the moon. it got ripped in half in the wash and i honestly still mourn it. i dressed like effie stonem, because everyone did. and irony was the name of the thing. men liked MLP "ironically." the internet liked the kind of crass, "anti-mainstream" vibes of things like fuck romance, touch my butt and buy me pizza. we put cats in sunglasses everywhere, which was because we only liked things in irony.
and media had the same vibe in it: anti-hero white men would be "hard to love" and then storm off the scene. nobody was just earnestly trying to save the world: they were jaded, angry, unoriginal. mad you even asked them to try to help.
my ex ends up not being wrong. cinemasins becomes super popular. a lot of people start viewing media with this lens that is the cruelest, most jaded depiction. it's wrong for your character to have unexplained powers, even if the entire movie is about how strange it is she has unexplained powers - that is still considered a "loophole." characters make thoughtless, panicked choices? loophole. characters are actually kind people, despite hardship? loophole. features a woman doing literally anything without assistance? loophole. movies become hyper-aware of scrutiny, and now irony rules the media.
which means you go to a movie, and the character has to turn to the screen and say "beats me!!" or one of the side characters has to have some kind of quip like "are you seriously telling me that you think this is normal?" because nothing can happen in earnest. like a sitcom laugh track, we now anticipate the fourth-wall break: the moment that the media acknowledges it is telling a story. the media has to apologize for itself, or else someone like my ex rolls their eyes.
but here's the thing: i wasn't wrong either.
the difference might be that i am (and always have been) so soft-hearted that any crack in the light of this world will spear me into the ground. and i was the poet in the relationship. (he thought that was the same thing as being naĂŻve and stupid). i was making things daily. i knew how all of us artists are driven by some strange desire to evolve. he notably liked to critique art, not to create it.
so yes, i've made things that are bitter and angry and even ironic. i've made long, sharp poems with all capital letters, and i've made poems about how the silence stretches out like a song. someone wrote once that we will spend our whole lives just circling the place we grew up. i think it's more that we spend our whole lives trying to remake a home. i think it's that as we age, it becomes less exciting to build the castle on the beach - we become aware of erosion, of windforce. we realize what we really want is to come home to our dog, castle or not.
and while art in the foreground is mired in white male violence and irony, and aggression, and not taking anything seriously - i don't think that's true of all art. i think more and more artists are leaning in to the things we love. the world has changed so much. they have taken so many things from us. the only thing we have left is love. at the bottom of the moving box - all we get is the faint sense that we have to appreciate what little we've got. i can't enjoy this stuff ironically anymore: what room do i have for irony? if it makes me happy, that is an amazing thing. there are so few happy places left for me. i want to be happy because of how leaves shiver beside each other like nestling birds. i want to be happy because of the color pink, and how magenta doesn't exist. i have spent so much of this life suffering, i have earned my right to a gentle ending. if nothing matters, i get to assign meaning to the nothing. i get to create meaning. i am an artist first and foremost, which means creation is my thing.
where is the whimsy? wherever i fucking put it. because if this is my last fucking chance to do any good in this world - i want to do it earnestly. i want to write things that make you happy. that make people feel heard and seen. what comes after irony has to be positivity.
it was close to my 21st birthday. in 7 years, i would end up writing a book about this relationship, which is hopefully coming out somewhere around May 2024. i come back to this bar scene in my memories a lot. i keep thinking of how pale my ex was. the look that crossed his face. how i looked back at him. how for a moment, both of us couldn't recognize the other person. like the gulf between us was a suddenly wide and cavernous thing. like we were alien to each other. he never took my opinion seriously, and he always seemed surprised whenever his manic-pixie-dream-girl ever broke free of the plot. like in the whole time we were together, i wasn't human enough.
this knowledge: where he said nothing comes after, my only instinct was what comes after is love.
#spilled ink#writeblr#this is a real story lol#looking back i liked larry as a person SO much more than my ex hollyyyyy shitttt#compulsory heterosexuality will do you DIRTY#edit to correct effies name my apologies to effie and effies family

Corinne Busche, John Epler, Matt Rhodes and Community Manager Katey were the devs that were there.
----
Katey: Hello!
John: Hello.
Katey: Beautiful, your mic sounds beautiful. How's everybody doing?
John: Excellent. I, just as a headsup, I have some folks doing some service, in the next room so, if I, if you hear background noise, that's what that is.
Katey: No worries at all. Well I hope that everybody who's been waiting in here is really excited, because I'm super excited. I'm Katey. I'm the Community Manager. If you don't already know, you can usually see my name at the top of this Discord server. But I'm joined here with some awesome guests that I'll let introduce themselves. Let's start with Corinne.
Corinne: Can you hear me okay?
John: Yep.
Katey: Yep, we can hear you beautifully.
Corinne: Great, perfect. I'm Corinne Busche, Game Director of Dragon Age: The Veilguard.
John: Awesome. I'm John Epler, Creative Director of Dragon Age: The Veilguard.
Corinne: John!
John: Hello.
Katey: And then we've also got Matt Rhodes, who may be struggling to find the unmute button which is at the bottom left.
Corinne: Our, our resident artist-poet, Matt Rhodes.
Katey: I could unmute him, actually, I don't know if I can unmute him, but if he needs help, he can message me on the side.
John: The joys of being a giant nerd is I spend a lot of time on Discord anyway, so.
Corinne: Well there you go, right?
Katey: Fair enough. Alright, well, we have a ton of questions to answer. We probably won't be able to get to all of them today. You all have sent in so many really really great answers, sorry, questions for us to answer. And if we don't get to them today, we're hoping to be able to do things like this in the future. So without further ado, I'll get started. First question's a bit of a soft ball, I feel. If you could belong to any of the main factions shown in the game, which would you choose?
Corinne: I mean, listen Katey, you say softball, but like, this is hard! Iâm gonna cheat, and Iâm gonna give you two. So for fashion, the Antivan Crows, all day long. Their threads, youâre gonna love it. For vibes, though, like the ones that capture my vibe, Mourn Watch. Gimme those necromancers.
John: Those are good answers. I have, I have one for fashion, and also for, just general faction Iâd like to be a part of. Veil Jumpers. Who doesnât like a nice walk in the forest, yâknow? Even if that forest is filled with horrifying monsters and terrifying anomalies, but yeah.
Katey: I love that. I know that Matt has a few technical issues â oh, heâs unmuted. There we go. Or maybe not. Thatâs okay, I think we can move on.
John: The Fade has taken Matt.
Corinne: Thatâs right, thatâs right.
Katey: Yes. One quick thing, if you check your settings, the cog-wheel in the bottom left, make sure that your voice, like, your audio is all good. If youâre still hearing the music, feel free to maybe, force-quit Discord and rejoin by just joining the stage directly. And mute the music before you come in. Okay. I can move on to the next question for now. Iâve seen, so this question was from Acra. Iâve seen a lot of talk about only having two companions in your party instead of three for this game. What is the reasoning behind this and will we still get the same companion conversations and banter as seen in the previous Dragon Age games?
Corinne: Ooh, this is such a good question. Thankyou, whoever submitted this one. Yeah, Iâll guess Iâll start and then Iâll turn it over to John Epler. So, first of all, as you saw in the gameplay reveal, this is a much more intimate experience. Weâve pulled the camera in. For those that arenât aware, the reason why is we want you to feel like you actually are in this world, right? Like, youâre walking these city streets of Minrathous, youâre looking up, seeing the buildings all around you, youâre a part of this place. So itâs much more intimate, and we believe as the narrative unfolds this creates a lot more immersion. Now, how that relates to companions is in doing this, we went back and forth on it a lot, but we actually found, with this perspective, having two companions, really allows them more visibility and presence. Weâve talked about the incredible depth and focus weâve put on fleshing out these companions, theyâre very fully-realized. So here, you really get to see them more clearly, you get to see them shine. When you see Lace Harding jump into the air and unleash a volley of arrows, you can only really get that because of that more intimate view. So I love the spotlight thatâs been put on them. But, I think, in addition to the banter, one of the things that people are wondering about is, okay, but what about gameplay? So again, this has come about from our testing, working with the internal team, also our lovely Council of players. We just found that when youâre playing in the combat system, when youâre planning your strategies, two really felt like the right number to manage. So keep in mind, Rook has a lot of different types of actions, Abilities, individual attacks that are more fully fleshed-out than ever before. Timing and positioning matter a lot. So this really felt like the right balance to have. The number of inputs and actions weâre asking you as a player to take, including directing your companions, is higher than ever before. And I will also say, I engage with the companions, like I actively control what theyâre doing more than I ever have before in any of the other three games. But John, Iâll toss it over to you for the banter. Thatâs kind of like the, we got a two-for-one there.
John: Yeah, yeah.
Corinne: I think thatâs a, a great question.
John: So - itâs a great question, yeah. I mean honestly, I donât think you could actually stop the writers from writing banter. I will say for myself, itâs, itâs one of the more light but fun things to do. You get to write little stories, little arcs between different characters. And I mean, The Veilguard is no different. Banter is still absolutely core part of it. You know, weâve got global banter, you know, the general stuff that you get in all spaces, as well as mission-specific stuff. But, yeah, itâs definitely still a big thing. I think itâs, if anything itâs the most weâve, weâve ever done for pairings of companions. Beyond that weâve also made sure, and I mean Iâve been on Dragon Age for a while, and I know thereâs been issues, you know, things like, okay, well I donât wanna miss this banter. So weâve even added stuff like some interruptible and resumable banter as well, just to make sure that, because again, itâs a core part of the experience. Everyone loves hearing these companions talk to each other, everyone loves hearing these little stories and relationships develop over the course of the game and, as mentioned before, companions are the heart of this experience and banter is a big part of that, so, you still have it, itâs, if anything, like I said, you could not stop the writers from doing it even if we tried, so.
Corinne: Thatâs right, thatâs right. Well, John, you know, listening to you speak, one thing that comes to mind, maybe people are wondering, with two companions in the field do I get less interaction between, that, like do I get to see my companions interacting in a broader group more often.
John: Oh -
Corinne: And, the way youâll gather them around the kitchen table, thereâs just so many of those moments where theyâre all interacting with each other.
John: Well, I think â
Corinne: Those are some of my favorite parts.
John: Yeah, and I think, yeah, and actually thatâs a, a good call, because I think the other side of it is, weâre not talking too much about your home or anything, but, we also want to make sure that they feel like they have a relationships and a life outside of just, the times you take a certain pair of companions out on the field. So we made sure that, they have those interactions there as well.
Katey: Love that. Letâs see. Um, Matt, are we, are we all set, are we good? Yes? No? Okay. I can continue and we can come back to some of your questions. Alright. So that, I loved the answers to those. How customizable is the backstory of Rook? Will we get to determine their past in the Character Creator? And that was asked by Briar.
John: Yeah, so. Absolutely. So, one of, each, Rook has six different backgrounds that you can choose from. Each of them is tied to one of the major factions in The Veilguard and each one sets out who Rook was before they recruited, were recruited by Varric, and. Well that sets out the broad events. As you go through the game, as youâre gonna have conversations, either with members of your faction, other characters, you can define, not just what those events were, but what they meant to you, what was your motivation, what was the kind of person you are as you build up Rook, because again, we wanna make sure that roleplaying is at the heart of this experience. And taking Rook, giving them, again, giving them background to ground them in the world but then letting you decide what that means and what that says about you is also a big part of it, so. And again, there are six different factions in this game, two which, anyone whoâs played Dragon Age for a while will remember. Youâve got the Grey Wardens. Youâve got the Antivan Crows. We also have, in addition to that, we have four new ones, because weâre in northern Thedas. We have the Veil Jumpers. We have the Mourn Watch. We have the Shadow Dragons, and we have the Lords of Fortune, so. Again, a lot of different options, a lot of different background, and a lot of opportunities to really define what your, who your Rook was, and who they are now, so.
Katey: Amazing. Will crafting return? If yes, has it been improved over the system in Inquisition? Asked by Some Dude.
Matt: Testing.
Katey: Oh hey Matt!
Corinne: âSome Dudeâ, is that, Iâm gonna assume âSome Dudeâ is a username. Great question.
Katey: Yes.
Corinne: Welcome Matt, the lovely Matt Rhodes.
Matt: Testing, testing.
Corinne: Welcome, welcome, hello. Alright, so, will crafting return? You can absolutely improve and customize your gear, yes, that is a big part of RPG progression, so yes you can improve and customize it. I will say, though, itâs different this time around, and it does get into spoiler territory, so I, Iâm gonna be a little bit cagey about it, but there might be a mysterious entity that assists you with that thatâll be an important part of the narrative.
Katey: So mysterious.
Corinne: Oooh!
Katey: Matt, Iâm gonna actually go back to our first question so that you can answer, so everyone knows.
Matt: Thank you.
Katey: What faction, what faction you would choose if you could choose one for yourself?
Matt: Absolutely, oh, for me itâs definitely the Lords of Fortune. Iâve had a chance to try out a bunch of them, but I think Iâve finally settled on them. And itâs largely just because pirate-barbarian is just such a great combination of elements, so. Treasure-hunting plus beaches and palm trees and all that stuff, itâs a, itâs a really good mix, so thatâs kinda my default.
Katey: I think Iâm with you there, for sure. How about this one - this one was definitely asked probably amongst the most in Discord. Axolotl asks, can we kiss or romance Manfred the skeleton?
Matt: Uh, I, I would say, not that skeleton, but weâre not saying no skeletons.
Katey: I love that answer.
Corinne: This is my favorite answer so far.
Katey: Alright, so Iâm gonna get back on track here. Alright. What, what were some of the development considerations that you had to take into account to ensure that this new game flows and functions with prior games, and Dragon Age Keep, if Keep is being utilized?
Corinne: Ooh, thatâs a good one too. So, first of all, I would, I would point everyone to, we did an interview with IGN that goes into some of the details there, so, like, if you want a deeper dive on it, check out that article. But just to summarize, we have taken a different approach on how you import your decisions this time around. Itâs now actually been fully-integrated into the Character Creator, and kinda serves a dual purpose, to be honest. I, I playfully, itâs not called this in-game, but I playfully think of it as âLast Time On Dragon Ageâ.
Katey: I love that.
Corinne: Right? Now, when I talk about its dual purpose, itâs been ten years since the last Dragon Age game released, so it serves as a refresher on critical events as well as allowing you to re-make those decisions that are critical to you. The thing I love about it is, itâs very highly visual, it uses the familiar tarot card aesthetic, so itâs actually really visual and playful experience as you go through it. It is very much important to us that itâs built into the client, though. You can play this game entirely offline. No connection. You donât have to link to your EA accounts, like thatâs been a really big request. So, the refresher plus make those decisions in-client, I think weâre all pretty happy about that. I donât wanna spoil anything by revealing what decisions you can import, like, look, yâall donât want the spoilers, but I will say, itâs been a really interesting creative intersection for us, because on the one hand, this is a whole new adventure. Youâre in northern Thedas, these locations that youâve literally never been to before. So that affects some of what will matter and what weâre not using this time around, as far as decisions. But obviously thereâs some very, very clear connections to existing characters. Itâs no secret that the Inquisitor, our dear Inky, is gonna show up, so, thatâs, thatâs a factor.
Katey: Peachy asks, will this next game be an open-world game, or is it just contained to Tevinter?
John: Yeah, thatâs a great question. So, you are in northern Thedas, but the game only begins in Minrathous, it doesnât stay there. Iâm, I think one of the most exciting things for me, honestly, and again, to Corinneâs earlier point about spoilers, I donât wanna get into too much spoiler detail, but getting to go to, and work with the art team, work with the narrative, work with the design team to build out these locations that weâve talked about. Places that characters have referred to as where theyâve come from, places that characters, obviously, in previous games, have hailed from, has been absolutely exciting. So, itâs, you do start in Tevinter, you do start in Minrathous, but again, thatâs not the entire game by any stretch. So yeah.
Corinne: Yeah, and the first half of it is, is it an open-world game? Weâve gone back to what we believe delivers the best, most curated â
John: Mhm.
Corinne: - intense narratives. So, this is a hand-crafted experience, itâs mission-based. Now, these locations can open up. You can go back, solve mysteries, do some really great side-content. Not fetch-quests, not grind-quests, some really great side content.
John: Mhm.
Corinne: But, I wanna be clear. Itâs, itâs a really curated, hand-crafted experience.
John: And just to, just to bounce off of that very quickly. The most important thing for us, to what Corinne was saying about hand-crafted, obviously weâve talked about how, you know, narrative, story, characters, are the most, are critical to us, and this has allowed us to build these experiences in a way that emphasize that, extremely long, while still, again, tying into the story threads and the story beats, so.
Katey: Awesome. TastefulToxel wants to know - will the companions have unique specializations like Dragon Age II, or will it be the same ones we will have access to as the player in like DA: Origins, or Inquisition?
Corinne: Oh, cool. Hey TastefulToxel. Yeah, so, cool question. I think the best way for me to describe this is that, yes, our companions will have Abilities that are truly unique to them. But also, the companions do fall into the archetypes of mage, rogue, and warrior. Like, for instance, you might be surprised to hear, because she has a bow, but Bellara is, in fact, a mage, and I, I love that. So, some of the Abilities, the bulk of the Abilities of the companions are based on their own unique personality. Like, Neve is the only mage that is an Ice Mage, so you get distinct Abilities for her. But, because sheâs a mage, she does have access to Abilities that all the mages share, like Time Slow. So we really like the balance there. Itâs like a good mix of representing their archetype, their class, and also their distinct specialization or personality, whatever you wanna call it.
John: Yeah, actually, I would actually say the word âpersonalityâ is a really great one because thatâs, again, each of these characters exists, each of these characters have a history, have a story of how they became who they were, and part of that was finding that intersection between narrative and gameplay, and making sure that, again, we, we serve the needs of gameplay but also allow these characters to breathe and exist as their own people, not just in conversation, but out of conversations, as well.
Corinne: I would also say as part of that core mage kit, healing spells are there, so any of your mages, you wanna make âem a healer, do that.
Katey: Lunasoul Darkmoon asks, will The Veilguard have tactical combat still?
Corinne: Ooh, such a good one, such a good one. Okay. Yes! Combat gets quite tactical, like, obviously this is an evolution of the combat system, and I talked about immersion, wanting you, to put you in the world, like youâre actually living and existing in it, but it is very tactical. And, I will say, we have a robust difficulty system. The tactics are increasingly important the higher difficulty level you go. So like, look, if youâre showing up for a highly tactical experience, I would crank that difficulty level in particular. But I wanna make clear, Iâm, super, I wanna make sure Iâm super clear in my answer. You saw the gameplay reveal. Our pause-time tactical mode is not overhead. It stays close to Rook. It does allow you to cycle between targets, both in and out of combat, thereâs a reason for that. As the game progresses, and you didnât see this in that opening hour of the game, but itâll display strategic information on the enemies, so like, what are their vulnerabilities, what are their elemental weaknesses, their enhancements, what are they resistant to? So your type of Abilities, learning into elemental gameplay, matters a lot. Iâd also say, this is a long answer, itâs such a good question â tactical decision-making also takes the form, I would say this is front and center, of coordinating your Ability usage between Rook and your companions to create synergies, or really devastating â we call them â detonation combos. So, let me give you a couple of examples, because it can be a little hard to visualize, so hopefully this helps. So one of the tactics that I personally enjoy in my own builds, I just recently played as a Veil Ranger, I love it, itâs one of my favorites. If Iâm fighting Fade-touched enemies in Arlathan, I like to use Bellaraâs Galvanized Tear to pull enemies together, itâs like a gravity well. You then Slow Time with Neve and, Slow Time affects the world around you, but it does not affect you, so you clump them up, you Slow Time, and then with Rook, I come in and do, like a devastating AOE or damage over time spell or Ability, and itâs even better if itâs a lightning-based Ability, because the Fade-touched in Arlathan are vulnerable to that. So thereâs so many layers of coordination and strategy and tactics. Now we did talk about the devastating, like, detonation combos, honestly, thatâs probably one of my favorite features, because thatâs when youâre really leaning into explicit teamwork between your companions and Rook, or, the companions together. So when I, when I build out my team and Iâm going into a mission, I try to ensure that I have at least a couple of possible synergies, detonation combo synergies within my team. Might be between Harding and Neve, or it might be between Neve and me, or it might be both. So here, I would go into battle, Iâd pause time, open the Ability Wheel, get information on the enemy, and the Wheel will actually tell me that there is a synergy combo, you might have seen a screenshot that says âcombo availableâ. It will remind you of those synergies between companions. You can queue both of those Abilities up at the same time, go, close out of the pause-time menu, theyâll both execute, both Abilities will happen, then the detonation AOE happens, applies debuffs to all the enemies in a radius of it, itâs so satisfying, itâs so satisfying, I canât wait for yâall to see it. But the interesting thing is that too is a tactical choice. Iâm choosing to use my companions to do that, and that means, in that moment, Iâm not using them to heal me, or to give me that defense bonus, or to knock an enemy off a ledge, so itâs about the opportunity cost. I, I could spend the rest of the session talking about this, I, apologies for being long-winded, but this is just one of my favorite parts of, of the game.
Katey: That was a great answer. Can you choose Rookâs pronouns? If yes, being, is being non-binary an option? And also, how detailed is Character Creation?
Corinne: Hell yeah you can select your pronouns! Absolutely. You can actually select both your pronouns and your gender, because those are related concepts, but theyâre not actually the exact same thing, so. Itâs really cool. Yeah, you can be non-binary. We have they/them, she/her, he/him. Yes, emphatic yes. How detailed is the Character Creator? Oh my goodness, yâall. Like. Very! I donât wanna give away too much just yet, but itâs very, very deep. It has been revealed, itâs out there in a couple of articles, about the focus on hair, the focus on skin-tones that are done respectfully, full-body customization, hell yeah, we love to see it. But weâre, weâre gonna, weâre gonna come back, weâre gonna show you a lot more on Character Creator, but we wanna make sure we have the time and space to, to do that.
Katey: Will there be a Photo Mode in-game?
Corinne: So that is something weâre actively looking into. We know thereâs a tonne of interest, so stay tuned on that one. But we are very much looking into it.
Matt: I can add to that, is a feature that is, that, we like, we like the idea of, and, and, itâs not just player-facing but internally, itâs a really helpful thing for us as weâre, as weâre building things out to have that so itâs, itâs, weâll let ya know.
Corinne: Yes, yeah, absolutely. We, we are as geeked on that possibility as you all are.
Katey: A lot of people were asking about Abilities. This one is from Clemmy. Abilities, I donât think I saw this answered yet, but are we going to be limited in how many Abilities we can pick from the Wheel?
Corinne: Ah! Yes, yes, yes. So, Ability Wheel does have a capacity. You have to choose which three Abilities you wanna bring for Rook, which three for one of your companions, and which three for another companion. And what I, what I like about this is there is, kind of, an emergent gameplay depending on who you and your companions are coming into the mission with. Now the reason for that is, it actually creates really interesting balance of strategizing, having to do that strategy about your kit, your combat kit, before the mission. And then the tactical decisions once youâre in the field in combat, deciding what to do. But, I do wanna clear one thing up, because, while there are three Ability slots for Rook, thereâs so much more than that. Other actions that you can perform directly from the Wheel include, youâll have an Ultimate Ability, associated with your class or your specialization, so thereâs variance there. Thereâs a type of items that youâll get that function like Abilities, theyâre typically like buffs and enhancements in form of Runes. So youâll control that for Rook and/or the team from the Wheel. You may have also seen that you can direct which targets your companions will focus on, but what you might not know is that a lot of the companion gear really synergizes with that directing your companions. When you issue those commands, that too will proc based on the gear they have equipped. Really interesting and strategic effects. They can be more Ability-like, more, like, procced effects, thereâs just so much from the Wheel, that once you get in and see everything working together, becomes more and more apparent.
Katey: We have another question from TastefulToxel which is, will Fireball and Cone of Cold be back as skills, or as spells in Dragon Age: The Veilguard?
Corinne: Ohh, I love, all these combat questions, really good. So Fireball and Cone of Cold arenât specifically back, however, their successors are. Frost Nova and Meteor. So these serve the exact same combat role and function as those other Abilities. I would also say, it gives âem quite the glow-up, so. Meteor in particular, like, so satisfying nuking a group of darkspawn with a well-placed Meteor, itâs really wonderful.
Katey: What accessibility features are available? I would love to know if thereâs an arachnophobia mode. Will there be mod support?
Corinne: Oh my goodness, arachnophobia. I am wicked afraid of spiders too, my partner always laughs at me. Iâm just terrified of them. That said, thatâs one weâre going to save for a little bit closer to launch before weâll go into full details about accessibility features. But I do wanna assure you, weâve spent a lot of time thinking about this topic so you can play the game in a way that really works for you. Iâm, Iâm excited to share that with you when the time is right.
Katey: So this one is from a username named Cookie. How long is the time-skip from Inquisition to The Veilguard? I know weâll probably get more info on this, but Iâm so curious.
John: Yeah, so, anyone whoâs paid attention to Dragon Age, and I can say as somebody whoâs been on Dragon Age since Origins, timelines are always a little iffy. They change, and they morph over development as we see how long events taking. But, for The Veilguard, we were actually pretty consistent from the start. Itâs been about ten years since the events of Trespasser. As you may or may not have noticed, Varricâs become a little bit of a silver fox. I know, Iâve heard, seen, Iâve seen a lot of comments on that on social media, but, yeah, ten years. Solasâ ritual is taken time to set up and youâre kinda coming in at the end of that hunt, so.
Katey: Siddy is asking the hardest-hitting question which is, is Solas still bald?
Matt: Yeah. I mean, if youâve watched the gameplay thing, we can all confirm, yes, Solas is still bald, Solas is still Solas. Weâve, weâve, I really, I really like how Solas has turned out this time around. I will say, hereâs a comment on this specific question thatâs gonna sound like a non-sequitur, but, once you get a chance to play it a little bit more, maybe youâll see it. In Thedas, ancient elves, they go bald when theyâre like millennia old, so. Solas wasnât always bald. So if you were to end up, end up seeing what Solas looked like in the past, things might be a little different. Youâll have â
John: - Now, now that said, Iâm sure some of you are wondering what happened to Solasâ wig from Tevinter Nights. Iâm sure he still has it somewhere, so.
Katey: Heâs just taking care of it elsewhere.
John: Heâs just taking care, itâs, itâs his most important possession.
Corinne: The Pride there, huh?
Katey: I have another one for Matt. This is, will we be able to, will we be able to change companionsâ appearances and outfits, or are they fixed, similar to Dragon Age II?
Matt: Yeah we, Dragon Age II was, we loved how the followers turned out in that but it was, it was sad given, given our constraints that we had to keep them with just one, one basic outfit. So we really tried to make some space for them this time around. So theyâre, they still have, kindâve iconic color palettes and things like that, but they do have a wider range of appearances that you can, that you can find for them. Some, some are just cool, but then there are some that are tied directly to their, to their narrative and just kinda whatâs happening in their life.
Katey: Another one for ya, which is, will we be seeing or visiting Kal-Sharok? Itâs, and, Tyrant says that theyâve been obsessed with it forever.
Matt: Yeah, me too. I, I will say, whatâs, whatâs been really cool, so in previous games, weâve kindâve alluded to this before. It was a lot of fun to hint at the locations that were off the map, the mysterious places that you werenât gonna go, you werenât going. And so you could just bring in some props or some characters, a piece of art, things like that, and you know, even Tevinter was only vaguely hinted at and then we would just add drips and bits and pieces, so that stuff was really fun. In The Veilguard, weâre actually getting to visit, most, like a whole lot of those locations that had only been hinted at for real, so you actually do run around Tevinter and a bunch of the other locations that weâve revealed. But this also means, like, weâre not completely filling out the map, and so that there are actually new things that we can start hinting at, that we can start drip-feeding, and so, itâs, itâs kindâve fun. Iâd say, yeah, for what we can show of Kal-Sharok, and, and other locations, itâs just, thereâs, thereâs more to do.
Katey: Awesome. MrFightmonster118 asks, will the dialogue wheel slash options be similar to Inquisition and Mass Effect: Andromeda in the sense that itâs more tone-based?
John: Yeah, so, we have a number of different types of wheels in our game. All the dialogue wheels are based off the same principle. Anyone whoâs played a Dragon Age game remembers what they look like. In Dragon Age: The Veilguard we have tone wheels which are, you know, again, roleplaying your character, picking consistent tone. We also have emotion wheels where you can pick specific emotional reactions. And choice wheels which are, I donât have a strong emotional or tone tie here but I do want to make a choice based on what I do. Investigates obviously return as well, but. We do want players to understand as much as possible what it is theyâre going to be picking, and understand, and again, choice and consequence is fun, we wanna make sure the choice is clear, even if, again, one of the best parts about consequence is making sure thatâs not entirely clear, so.
Katey: How extensive are Rookâs decision trees for dialogue going to be with the companions and also with NPCs throughout the game?
John: Huge. I mean, again, itâs a Dragon Age game, we wanna make sure you have choices, we wanna make sure you can choose both your roleplaying but also choose outcomes of conversations, choose how events unfold, so, I mean, again, itâs a Dragon Age game, we wanna make sure that we also react to decisions youâve made, so. For example, you may be talking to a follower who is an elf, and if you yourself are an elf, obviously youâre gonna have a different perspective on events than someone whoâs not an elf. Sometimes that means different conversation options, sometimes thatâs going to mean entirely deep dialogue trees, as well as based off decisions youâve made throughout the game so, again, making sure that the game feels like itâs noticing what youâre doing is a huge part of how weâve written out the dialogue wheel, or dialogue trees, in this game.
Corinne: Blueberry has a question for Corinne. It was mentioned that there will be, that we will be able to romance who we like. Does that mean that all companions are romanceable by all player characters regardless of race or gender, as it has been in the past?
Corinne: Yeah, yeah. So, we have talked about this in some of the interviews, Iâve seen a few articles about it, so Iâd recommend everyone check out those articles. But let me just give you a quick overview. Each of the seven companions have full romance arcs and they are romanceable by all genders, absolutely. But something thatâs really important to, to us on the team, so I wanna make sure that we clarify and just double-down on, that doesnât mean playersexual. And if anyoneâs unaware of what we mean by that, it doesnât mean that they can form or twist their identities to who you the player are, like they, they wonât suddenly have a preference for men or women based on what youâre playing, right? Instead, they have their own fully fleshed-out identities, they are true and authentic to that. So in this game, they are all pansexual, with their own histories of romance. Sometimes youâll hear about preferences, or things of that nature. And what I really love is, if you donât pursue a romance with them, theyâll actually build their own romances with each other. So, in one of the interviews I talked about Lace Harding and Taash getting together. I give that example because honestly, itâs one of my favorites. Iâm gonna put a question back to the community, though. Iâve heard weâre going with âLaashâ for that ship-name? You tell me, like, what is that ship-name?
Katey: That one just rolls off the tongue, I feel like that works. This next question is from FallenArtesia. What are the markings on the faces of the elven Warden and Veil hopper?
Matt: So thereâs a, quite a few, probably, I think, easily more than weâve done before, tattoos from various, various cultures. Weâre bringing the vallaslin back, of course. But thereâs, yeah, ton of different options, especially when weâre, again, going into all these new regions. Each, each area has its own kindâve visual language for that. But yeah, we are bringing the vallaslin back and then a couple of the characters have them, but weâve kindâve customized them a little bit, theyâre a bit more specific to their personality.
Katey: And this is a question for all of you. What are you, what are you as a developer most proud of about the game, and what are you most excited for players to experience when itâs out?
John: Ooh, thatâs a good question.
Corinne: Isnât it?
John: Corinne, you wanna go first?
Corinne: Yeah, sure. Gosh. So I suspect for most of us, myself included, it is really gonna be the depth and authenticity of the companions, journeying along with them on their arcs, learning about their hardships, what they care about, being by their side, that, that authenticity is just so good. They all feel like my dear friends. But, I have to say, the closest runner-up for me, has to be the Character Creator, has to be. That Character Creator, the makeup options, the range of sliders. Iâm a qunari fan, so even just the, the way you customize the horns and combine that with the really great-looking hair. Character Creator has to be my, my, like very close runner up.
Matt: Oh yeah. For me, I would say, as far as, what, what I can say Iâm most proud of on this one, the, I can speak for the art team. We worked incredibly hard to make the story more visible than ever. Games are a visual medium, but, you know, itâs, sometimes itâs easier to do things in text format or written in a Codex somewhere or alluded to off-screen. But we really leaned in to trying to make sure that every design, prop, character, environment, the VFX weâre choosing, everything, all, all these choices, were putting the story on-screen so that you can really see it unfold. And I think, having worked on all of the Dragon Age games, I would say Veilguard represents one of the best attempts at that weâve made yet.
John: Iâm gonna cheat, because Iâm going last and I get to do that when I go last, and kinda combine both Corinneâs and Mattâs answer. Honestly, the companions are, for me, the absolute highlight of, just, being able to work across all the disciplines, building characters who look and sound and behave in very specific and characterful ways. These are the deepest companion arcs weâve ever done. Not just on Dragon Age, but at BioWare in general. Each, each companion has their own story arc, you can go through decisions you can make, they really do take center-stage, and I think, as you play through with them you see the care and love that the team has put into each and every one. I mean thereâs, thereâs moments in each arc that make you cry, make you angry, make you excited and, and the way that they integrate into the story as a whole is just, for me, something thatâs been really fun. Finding ways to bring these characters together, finding ways to make this, this narrative, this story of, you know, you need to put together a team and stop the end of the world, itâs just been absolutely exciting and thrilling. And again, you see the teamâs love in every single piece of it. As for what Iâm most excited? For me, Iâve been, I mean Dragon Age has been part of my career, part of my life for literally the last decade and a half. Iâve worked on it since Origins and thereâs something about The Veilguard that feels like a amazing mix of, novelty but also familiarity. Itâs like coming home in a way that I think is going to be very exciting for people who are existing Dragon Age players, but thereâs also so much here thatâs just new and exciting for people, new players and old players alike. And going to parts of the word, seeing things weâve never seen before, and just getting to take this amazing world, this amazing series and expand on it and build on it in ways that have just been, honestly, an absolute thrill, the best part of my career. And Iâve been in games for seventeen years now, this has been the absolute highlight for me, so. Thatâs what Iâm excited about.
Corinne: John, that was, that was such a good answer, and I just, I just wanna âyes, and -â that. It, I so completely agree with you. Thereâve been times in the companion arcs where even, knowing exactly whatâs going to happen, we work on the game, with some of these decisions, I, Iâve had to set down the controller, let out a heavy sigh and go âoh my god, what am I gonna do here?â Yeah, the depth of them is wonderful. And, I do wanna say, I, Iâd be, I wanna put this out there, when we talked about as a developer, what are we most proud of, can we just give a big shout-out to the dev team? I am so proud of them. This team has poured their heart and soul into this.
John: Absolutely.
Corinne: Anyone from BioWare whoâs listening in, thank you so much, yâall are just the best.
John: Hear, hear.
Katey: I absolutely love that. I knew that question was going to have some of my best, some of my favorite answers, and it delivered, so thank you three. This oneâs a fun one. Why does Varric have dark hair now? I feel like John mentioned this a little bit earlier, but.
John: Just for [inaudible].
Matt: Heâs been, heâs been adventuring for a while now. His hair is, is more gray, but heâs been in very dark scenes so far, so. Weâll see him in some more contexts.
Katey: In this question, we actually took from Tumblr, because there were a few really good ones in our ask box. Will the Inquisitor be appearing in the flesh, or are we just choosing their major Dragon Age: Inquisition decisions?
Corinne: Alright! Yeah, yes! They will. The Inky does appear. We know how attached yâall are to the Inquisitor, Iâve seen the love for your OC. Yes, the Inquisitor shows up. Now, we, weâd already confirmed that in a few places, so, let me just say, you can also customize them, includes some of our new customization options, yeah, theyâre gonna show up and theyâre gonna be your Inquisitor.
John: And I think, I think beyond that, I mean, the story of Solas and the story of the Inquisitor, obviously are tied, theyâre tied together as much as any story, so. It would have been strange for us not to bring them in for this one. They have, theyâre gonna be a part of the story, so.
Katey: Will there be any planned DLC? Just curious, as I always love the DLCs. Oh, and transmog armor. This one came from Lavell.
Corinne: Oh, heck yeah, good question. So, right now, our focus is entirely on the quality of the game. Like, itâs so important at this stage for us to be all-in, all attention on, just, finishing this game and delivering on the quality, the promise of it. So honestly, like, thatâs all I can really say about it. Weâre 100% focused on this being the most complete game we can make it. I will say, kindâve related to that though, and I just wanna underscore this, I wanna emphasize it. Thereâs not gonna be any microtransactions, thereâs not gonna be any battle passes, you donât have to connect online, our focus is making this the most complete singleplayer game we possibly can. Now, this was kindâve a two-for question, I love when we do that. Will there be transmog? Hell yeah. Iâm the kindâve player that, that believes fashion is the real end-game. Yeah, thereâs a transmog system, absolutely, itâs sick.
Katey: And then this next question is from Scott. I was asking if any of the characters will be explicitly asexual, or on the ace spectrum?
Corinne: So good. Such a good question. So, look, Iâm just, Iâm gonna be really forthcoming with yâall and a little bit vulnerable here. Iâm ace, Iâm a gray-ace, I donât mind sharing that, Iâm kindâve public with it. I will say though, that none of our companions this time around are explicitly ace. When we look at the characters, their motivations, who they are, we always assess, like is, is this the right time? This time it wasnât. But what I will say for everyone on the ace spectrum out there, I would love to represent an ace relationship sometime in the future when it feels like the most authentic fit for a companion, when we can do it best. Oh, and I do see some questions, you know, some questions, what do we mean by ace? Asexuality. We often refer to it as the ace spectrum.
Katey: Can mage Rook do blood magic? Will blood magic be a skill tree separate from regular magic?
Corinne: Okay. Um, this gets a little spoilery, so let me just say, Rook has some pretty good reasons to avoid blood magic. Rook is not gonna want to be interested in that. But I will say, the mage skill tree is packed with all kinds of spells, traits and perks to give you a ton of flexibility in your magic. Gonna go off-script just a little bit, because â
John: Oh no.
Corinne: Iâve seen, like, can you tell us about the specializations for mage? Iâm not gonna tell you the deets, but there is a necromancer one, there is an elemental one, and there is one thatâs actually more of like a combat mage, itâs my favorite.
Katey: Can we name the griffon? We also have a griffon emoji now in this Discord server.
John: Excellent. So, someone on your, in your party, again, spoilers, may have already named the griffon, but, donât worry, Assan is a very good boy, so.
Corinne: All these griffon emojis are, yâall are killing me.
Katey: Yeah, I love that, griffons in the chat. Let's see. Will we have a camp/home/headquarters that weâll be able to customize?
Matt: Well this time around, in Inquisition you had Skyhold. In this case you have a headquarters called the Lighthouse. More to be seen on that. But, itâs, it, narratively it, it serves kindâve a different purpose but also the same purpose. As far as customization goes, there are elements of it that change over time, and some things that you can adjust. I, I donât know how much weâre really going into that at the moment.
Katey: This one is â
Matt: But yeah, I would say, itâs like, thereâs some, it, one thing I like about it is it definitely does start to feel very much like a home over time.
Katey: Sorry for almost cutting you off there Matt. We have another very hard-hitting question, if I'm, if I do say so myself.
John: I love this one.
Katey: We need to - Same. We need to know, does pasta and noodles exist in Thedas? Thank you.
Matt: Well, and Iâll take it as a chance just to geek out about worldbuilding, because, again, weâre, The Veilguard for us is a really kinda dream opportunity to go to places that weâve only ever heard reference to, or weâve seen hints at. And so, in going through the worldbuilding process and trying to, trying to build these places out, not just as neat things from the IP but also as, you know, if youâve, if you've read about this stuff, if youâve been following along, youâve got your own version of it in your head. Youâve imagined what it might be like, youâre, and probably hoping for something spectacular. And our brains are always far better at creating this stuff than any game developer, any artist, or anyone can really do justice to, so you really have to swing for the fences to make something very satisfying and exciting. You know, is, that can be everything as big as architecture and landscape and biomes and ecosystems, but it does get into things like art and culture, costume design, and also food, and this time around we did, you know, that was one of the many things that we, that we did, looking to, just to try to catch the character and the feel of a place to make it feel believable and lived in, so. Thatâs my really long answer for, yeah, Iâm sure, I've, at least one place does have pasta.
Katey: I loved that. This next question is from Spectre Karro. Are we getting a mabari?
John: Ooh, thatâs a good question. I will say, youâre spending most of the game in the north of Thedas. Mabari are not nearly as big of a thing up there, so. In this particular instance, no, you will not get a mabari, sadly.
Katey: Honestly, I shouldâve pulled this one up to where we answered the first question about the griffon, but, can we pet the griffon?
Matt: You, Iâm really sorry to have to be the one to tell you â nah, Iâm kidding, yes you can. But itâs not even just petting the griffon. Iâve, this isnât a spoiler, I think you can actually, Iâve actually hugged the griffon, so, that feels like, even there, a step up. Yeah.
John: Thereâs lots of opportunities to interact with the griffon.
Corinne: Can we see, can we see Assan in chat if we wanna see him in the Lighthouse hanging out?
Katey: Assan in chat everybody.
Corinne: Assan in chat, alright!
Katey: I love it.
Corinne: Okay, yâall this was so important to the team too. Like, this is the teamâs like, just such huge support for this feature, so props to them.
Katey: This one is from Coriander. Will we get to see any of the Character Creator before the game releases?
Corinne: Yes, yes you will. Weâve got a, youâve probably seen, weâre laying out a roadmap for, you know, what weâre gonna show and when weâre gonna talk about, so, yes you will see it as we get a little bit closer to launch.
Katey: And then weâve got this question which is, will we be able to play as a qunari, dwarf, elf, or human?
Corinne: Hell yeah, hell yeah you will. All four, and all four have that full-body customization. I already talked a little bit about, I mean listen, Iâve always loved the qunari. I will say in Dragon Age: Inquisition it was hard to get a good-looking qunari hairstyle, so yes you can play as them, you can customize them, the horn options are rad, the hair options are rad. And also, I guess related to this, your lineage gives you a lot of really unique dialogue options, so thatâs a really lovely aspect of choosing your lineage as well.
John: Yeah, I would, so to actually just to bounce off that, to an earlier question about backgrounds, each lineage, there, depending on the lineage you choose and the background you choose there are some specifics call-outs to, for example, if itâs the Mourn Watch, the Mourn Watch being a faction from Nevarra of mages, you play as a dwarf, obviously your experience in that faction is going to be different than, say, a human or an elf, so. There are also specific call-outs tailored to those combinations and, with again, giving, the intention of giving each lineage their own little flavor as to how they're, they fit into that faction as a whole.
Katey: Okay, John, Iâve got a question from someone named Joe for you. Where is Barkspawn and is he okay?
John: Thatâs a Great question. Barkspawn is safely gnawing on a bone next to a fireplace somewhere in Ferelden, donât worry, heâs fine. You may question, ask yourself, but John, itâs been so long, in which I say, mabari live exactly as long as they need to.
Corinne: Getting into the deep-cut questions now.
John: Deep-cut questions, yeah.
Katey: Yeah. We are really speedinâ through these. Letâs see. Will Rook have a set of default name?
John: Yeah so, Rookâs last name is defined based on their faction, again, we wanted to tie that into your backstory, but also, thereâs a, thatâs a name generator that can give you a selection of first names. Obviously if you want to make your own first name, thatâs definitely something we support as well. If youâre somebody who maybe has a little bit more difficulty coming up with a name, so for example you name every single character âBobâ because thatâs the only name you can think of, we also give that opportunity for that generation, so.
Katey: I definitely always have trouble coming up with what I wanna name my characters, so thatâs great. This next question is, when will the voice acting cast be announced?
John: So, we worked with a lot of very talented actors on this one. I am super excited to talk about the voice acting cast. Weâll be talking a bit more over the summer, weâre not quite ready to announce names yet.
Katey: And I think we have a similar answer to this next question, which was, will there be a Collectorâs Edition? When can I pre-order?
John: Yeah, same answer, we have, weâll talk more about the different editions of the game soon.
Katey: Are there any special musical guests writing the sound-track? Will tavern songs return.
Corinne: Oh my goodness, yeah. There are tavern songs. And huge credit to the audio team and performance teams because theyâre pretty great. Thereâs one in a little tavern in Minrathous called The Swan, and the song you hear there might just, it might be, itâs up there, it might just be my favorite of the tavern songs.
Katey: Letâs see, are there any â ope, I have just asked that one. What are the required PC specs?
John: Much like the other two, we will have more information on required PC specs soon.
Katey: Saph from the Discord server noticed that two, Dragon Age IIâs main theme from the soundtrack brought back much of the iconic thematic material of Originsâ main theme, but I heard less of it in Inquisitionâs. Can we expect The Veilguardâs main theme to recall more or less of that original thematic material than Inquisition?
John: So weâre not, weâre not quite ready to talk about music yet in specifics, but in broad strokes I can say the process for us is always the same. Working with the composer, working, figuring out themes, figuring out what kinds of elements we want to keep, tying specific elements to, maybe specific characters. Itâs a really in-depth process and a really collaborative process. We have some fantastic audio people on our team that have done an amazing work, amazing job, working with composers, and, with the team as a whole to make sure that, again, we said earlier about cohesiveness. Making sure that the music feels like a cohesive part of the experience.
Katey: And this one, I see is also for John, but I think anyone can answer this. When writing the overall story of this game, what themes did you want to have as the prominent focus?
John: I mean again, itâs interesting, so itâs interesting, because when we were writing these games, and this has been true on every Dragon Age Iâve been part of, what you start with and where you end up arenât always necessarily the same. Sometimes you start writing out a theme, you realize actually itâs more interesting if we attack from this angle, or maybe if we twist it a little bit. I will say for Dragon Age: The Veilguard, from the beginning one of the biggest themes has been regret. How regretâs shaped peoplesâ lives, how people deal with their regrets, how people maybe move past their regrets and, each of the characters, you know, the stories as a whole, have elements of this tied throughout. We really wanted to have that thematic, that cohesiveness to the gameâs story and the gameâs writing so.
Katey: And I know that, you know, weâve, we've kindâve already answered this a few times, but can we play as dwarves and does the world react to your race and backstory? Probably be good to just directly answer that one.
John: Yes you can play as a dwarf. Yes the world does react to your race and backstory. And, again, youâll have unique dialogues or unique conversation options based on that, on that backstory and as well as that race.
Corinne: Iâll give you a little nugget here, because I saw it scrolling through real quickly. Do you have beards, like. So when I think about can I play as dwarves I think about, do we have glorious fantastic beards? Hell yeah, we do.
John: Yeah, I can say, as somebody who plays a lot of games with character creator, the beards on, I donât know what magic the character art team did for the beards, but they feel like a beard should feel like, itâs great. They look awesome.
Corinne: Just saw somebody say âitâs beard timeâ, I love it. Itâs beard time!
Katey: Will our heroes and companions leave us if we go against their wishes?
Corinne: Oh my good â do yâall just love pain? Do you want us to make you cry? If you go against their wishes, if you make decisions they donât like, I will tell you, you can piss them off, you can, they might not agree with you and they, they will take some time away. That said, this is the biggest threat to Thedas weâve ever seen, so theyâre, they are always gonna be willing to show up to defend Thedas but, yeah, you can piss them off and theyâll leave for a minute. As it relates to them showing up to defend Thedas, well yeah, they will, unlessâŠ
John: No spoilers Corinne!
Corinne: Aughhh, Iâll leave it there, Iâll leave it there.
John: No spoilers.
Corinne: Okay, alright, alright. But they want it!
John: Yep.
Matt: Donât try to stop me, Smee!
Katey: This oneâs a fun one about some inspirations for the game. Dracanmo would like to know if any songs, books, movies or anything have had inspired any of the writing for the characters?
John: I mean, honestly, the thing about art is, art is always a synthesis of your own experiences both in the real world but also the art you consume, the art you pay attention to. I donât think that any characters have what I would describe as, this character was a direct reference or direct inspiration but, I mean, yeah, theyâre all inspired by the things that we do, the things, both, again, in the real world, and also in the media we consume. And youâre gonna see elements of characters that, yeah, the things that weâve enjoyed, the things thatâve shaped us, show up in these characters. I think, for me, itâs, it comes down to, and I, I, writing is a deeply, can be a deeply personal experience, so even if you donât intend for it to be the case, things, parts of you are going to show up in your character, I think thatâs true for all the characters in The Veilguard. And, you know, sometimes itâs, exploring, exploring the, yâknow, things that, about yourself that you may like or may not like, and itâs also about exploring things about characters that you like or donât like, so. Thatâs kinda my long-winded way of saying yes, itâs impossible to not have that happen when youâre creating art. But I wouldnât say that thereâs one where you can say, oh this is this character, this is this character.
Katey: What was the thinking process behind making Harding a companion this time around? Was she always going to be one or did it evolve into one because she was such a lovable character?
John: Ohh, yeah. So Harding, I mean. When we released Inquisition, it was impossible not to see the love that people had for our murderous girl next door dwarf. Sheâs always been a fan favorite obviously, but I think beyond that, itâs something that there, that Hardingâs writer wanted to explore. There was more of a story to tell there, more perspective, and beyond that, Harding obviously has a strong connection to Solas, and to the, to Varric, and to the events of the past ten years, so. I wouldnât say itâs always been, but Iâd say Hardingâs probably one of the first ones we settled on as like, yes, this is a character we want and the writer had a story that they wanted to tell with her, so, it just made sense.
Matt: You know, I think actually, to piggyback on that, thatâs something I hadnât really even thought about that much, but, and itâs not a huge part of her character, but, she tends to be one of the people that have the most insight into he was.
John: Yeah, thatâs exactly it, thatâs exactly, and yeah, thatâs a great way of looking at it too. It also provides you with a little bit of that, that perspective. For players whoâve been around, you know, who played with previous Dragon Age games, but also for new ones, who was Solas? What kind of character was, was he?
Matt: Yeah.
John: Yeah, itâs a great, itâs a great, using characters to provide windows onto the world is honestly one of my favorite things.
Matt: And, and when I say was, I just mean, in Inquisition.
John: Yes, thatâs, thatâs exactly it, yes. Thank you for correcting that.
Matt: Yeah.
Katey: And what approach are you taking to quest and world design in The Veilguard?
John: I think for us it just comes down to relevance and narrative heft. We want to make sure that each quest provides either a perspective on the world or perspective on the characters, or feels immediately and obviously relevant to what youâre, what youâre doing here. Youâre here to save the world and, again, at the end of the day, one of the things that we heard, we heard loud and clear, was some feedback about how relevant, or in this, in our case, not relevant, previous quests have felt, so for Veilguard, we really wanted to make sure that these quests felt like something that you, somebody faced with the end of the world would believe was necessary and important. So, again, thereâs quests of all sorts and sizes, but all of them share that same feeling of, this is the kind of thing that The Veilguard would do. This is the kindâve thing that my hero would do, especially faced with the end of the world.
Corinne: Yeah, thatâs, thatâs really good John. Thatâs so right. I would just, again, double-down on how hand-crafted all the quests are, and whether, whether youâre doing, like, the main story, or youâre journeying with your companions, or youâre out exploring and you encounter a mystery. Everythingâs handcrafted, intentional. We spent a lot of time listening to what yâall said, and of course everyone has slightly different tastes, but, you know, youâre not gonna be gathering shards in the Hinterlands. Everything is built with intention, and, you know, a dev there lovingly handcrafting the experience.
Katey: Are there any locations in the game that can only be accessed by making specific story choices?
John: So I donât wanna get too much into spoilers here because this does start getting into spoiler detail, but I will say that locations can fundamentally change based on decisions you make. Some of the parts of the world that you go to, you can have, the decision, the choices you make have an impact on how these spaces exist and develop, so, yeah, and again, donât wanna too many into, into story spoilers, but, your decisions do impact how the world shows up.
Katey: And will we be able to control our companions in combat through tactical mode, or if the PC, or player character, gets KOâd, like in previous games?
Corinne: Right, so. If Rook gets KOâd, your player character gets knocked out, this time around it is time to re-load your save, or better yet, the companions have really interesting progression, you can spec them out to be able to revive you, but thatâs, thatâs if youâve invested in their own progression and what they can do. And that said, I, I mentioned this earlier but I, I personally spend more time in the nature of this combat system when everything comes together, interacting and directing the companions than I have in any of the other games, so, like, like that, that interactivity between them, once you play it youâll see how, just engaged the team is.
Katey: A user named Itâs Sarah said, my real most important Dragon Age question is, will Solas still occasionally or dramatically speak in iambic pentameter?
John: You know, I was, I actually spent a little bit of time trying to figure out if I wanted to answer this question in iambic pentameter and then I very quickly gave up. Massive kudos to Patrick who, who always writes Solas so well. Again, Solas is a returning character, itâs the same Solas you know and love, or hate, depending on who you are. Same writer, so, I think, this has been, the answer is, well of, yeah, itâs Solas.
Katey: Will our decision of who in particular was left behind in the Fade be important?
John: So, while that decision does not show up, that â sorry, let me, restart. Not for The Veilguard. That decision doesnât show up here. Now, that said, that doesnât mean thatâs thatâs not a decision that will ever be important in the future, so. Again, not for this one, though.
Matt: Iâm glad to hear you say that, John, because one of my favorite stories was Bob getting stuck in the web in reboot and it just feels like -
John: Thatâs a, thatâs a deep cut!
Corinne: Very, thatâs a deep cut.
John: Holy smokes.
Corinne: My goodness.
John: The sound of my childhood.
Katey: Will we have mounts again? If so, any hints to what types weâll have?
Matt: So no, no, mounts, excuse me. Mounts were, they were, they addressed a need in Inquisition that we donât have in Veilguard, and youâll see why, when you get to play.
Katey: LightningStar asks, how is the side quest design? Will they be mostly story-based, or will there be a lot of radiant quests or resources or Power, like in Inquisition?
John: We talked about it a little bit earlier, but, no, they are all hand-crafted and story-focused. Again, narrative, the companions, not just the companions but the characters in the world as a whole are so much at the core of The Veilguard that, anything other than hand-crafted quests just felt like it would be a disservice to the game we were building.
Corinne: Yeah. And maybe, we can clarify as well, because, like Power was such a divisive mechanic in Inquisition. Thereâs no mechanic like that that blocks your progression until you fill a bar, right, like thatâs just not a thing in this. You have the autonomy to engage in these, these quests as you like. Thereâs no, like, y'know, grind-out gates before you can progress.
John: Thatâs right, yeah. Again, we wanna make sure that, again, that doing this content feels as natural and part of the logical flow of the story as possible.
Katey: So, it looks like we only have time for three more questions, so Iâm going to get through those. With this next one, is from someone named Jason. Will there be a similar system to the War Table missions?
Corinne: Ooh, interesting. So, we havenât talked much about the playerâs base, the Lighthouse. And weâre gonna save that for a beat, but what I will say is that the Lighthouse, your headquarters so to speak, it has its own unique purposes and functions this time. So thatâs an area that weâll, weâll leave for you when we talk more about the Lighthouse, and then when you have a chance to hop in, youâll be able to see what those unique purposes and functions are.
Katey: If there is dual-wield for warriors, will it rely on dexterity or strength?
Corinne: Ah, okay, yeah, yeah. So we did wanna bring dual-wielding back. It is part of the rogue kit this time. So warriors are really focused on mighty two-handed weapons, canât wait til you see, when you swing and connect with those weapons, thereâs, thereâs a real heft to it. And then of course sword and shield, so. Weâre leaving the dual-wielding to the rogues, but you, you can see just, the amount of hits you can get in in rapid succession dual-wielding as a rogue is really satisfying.
Katey: And the last question that weâre able to get to today, is, what have been some of the challenges and advantages of working on a single, on a single game for so many years? How did you sustain the work in yourselves and the process?
John: That is a fantastic question. I will say for myself, Iâve often joked, and I donât know how much of a joke it actually is, that when this game is out and I suddenly donât have to keep all these pieces of game and lore and story and everything straight in my head, Iâm suddenly gonna be able to speak Latin or something because thereâs gonna be a ton of brainpower freed up. But for me itâs just, you know, it's, the thing that keeps me sustained is just knowing the game that weâre building is the right one. Knowing that the beats are coming together, and knowing just how much people care about this franchise, care about these games, and how excited people are going to be when they get to see the fantastic work that the team has, has been doing. And that really is, I can say, Iâve been on this project since the start, and even today, I see things on a daily basis, Iâm like holy â smokes, sorry, I almost swore, I canât believe what the team is doing, I canât believe the, how good this looks, I canât believe. Because itâs a huge game. Thereâs pieces that I, I donât see every piece of the game every day so, I get pleasantly surprised on a daily basis and that, I will say, you know, confession, sometimes if Iâm having a particularly long day, Iâll spend about an hour late at night just watching cutscenes coming in, watching the work coming together and just, sitting back and being like, holy smokes, I cannot wait for someone who hasnât seen this every day for so long as I have to experience this and just be blown away by the work, so.
Corinne: It's, itâs been very real, hasnât it? And, and I will just say, speaking on behalf of the dev team, everyoneâs working so hard, theyâre putting so much passion, so much of themselves into it. Like this is a franchise they truly love, and seeing your support, cheering us on, itâs just meant a lot to them, so, let me just say thank you to all of you.
Katey: And I wanna say thank you to you three for taking the time to do this. I know that it matters a lot to the community to be able to, you know, get some time with you guys and, you know, make sure that some of their dying questions are, are answered, so thank you so much for taking the time out of your day to do this. For anyone whoâs still listening I promise that Iâm that Iâm working on a way for these questions to be immortalized somewhere. Stay tuned for that so that you donât have to worry about this, just, you know, disappearing into the ether. So, stay tuned, thank you all for your time. Anything else we wanna say before we jump off?
Matt: Thanks everyone.
John: Thank you. Yeah, Iâm super excited to show more of this and, yeah, this is gonna be, hopefully this is the first of many of these opportunities to talk to you all directly. Again, itâs been a while, and getting to talk about this game has been absolutely exciting. I know for myself, as well for the rest of the team, so thank you all.
Corinne: Just thank you, itâs, the Dragon Age community, how much it means to you, how much it means to us, itâs just wonderful to see you all so invested and excited to come here and talk to us. Thank you again, truly.
Katey: We'll hopefully do something like this again soon. Okay, cool, have a great day everybody! Talk soon!
John: Bye yâall!
Matt: Bye.

âżfluff - b.e x reader

I know we all need a little something to make us feel better (I'm still mourningđ), so as a fellow billie writer, and for the requests in my inbox, here you go my loves đ I hope you enjoyy. Mwa!
ÊÉ
Billie sat hunched on the edge of her bed, her eyes red and puffy from crying. She had just gotten back from the Grammy Awards, seeing all her friends and peers winning awards left and right while she came away with nothing. It stung more than she ever could have imagined. And she didn't expect it to.
There was a soft knock at her bedroom door before it opened, revealing you, her girlfriend. Billie looked up at you with a sad smile, trying to be strong even though she felt like crumbling inside.
"Hey, can I come in?" You asked softly, your voice filled with concern.
Billie nodded, wiping at her tear-stained cheeks. "Yeah, of course. I could use the company right now."
You entered the room and closed the door behind you. then making your way over to sit beside Billie on the bed. You wrapped a comforting arm around the singer's shoulders, pulling her close. "I'm so sorry about tonight, Bille. I know how much the Grammys meant to you," you murmured, rubbing your hand soothingly along Billie's arm.
Billie let out a shaky sigh, leaning into your touch. "I just...I don't get it. I poured my heart and soul into my album. I thought for sure I had a shot at winning something, anything really. But... nothing. It's like, what's the point?" Her voice cracked with emotion as fresh tears spilled down her cheeks. You tightened her embrace, letting Billie cry into your shoulder.
"You can't think like that," you said firmly but kindly. "Your music means everything to so many people, including me. The fact that you didn't win an award doesn't diminish your talent or your impact."
Billie sniffled and pulled back to look at you with loving eyes. "You really mean that?"
You nodded, cupping Billie's face in your hands. "I do Billie, you're an incredible artist and an even more incredible person. Don't let one night or a silly little award define you or your career. Your album is beyond amazing."
Billie felt a small smile tug at her lips as she gazed into your earnest eyes. "Thank you. I don't know what I'd do without you."
"You don't have to do anything without me," you said with a warm smile, cupping her cheek and leaning in to plant a soft kiss on her lips.
"We're in this together, love..."

THIS IS THE PART TWO, you can read the first chapter below:
the first time you see caleb after the incidentâ you're hereâyou punch caleb in the faceâcaleb teaches you his love language
skyhaven, powered by a protocore, stood as a beacon of innovationâa home to cutting-edge research centers and advanced tech organizations. when you were younger, the suspended island above linkon city had been a dream, a place of endless possibility and freedom. now, standing here, you couldnât shake the irony: the very place you once longed to visit now felt like a gilded cage.
your journey here has unsettled you, planting a persistent seed of doubt. was this truly what you wanted? leaving behind the familiar comforts of your apartment to follow caleb to this towering, enigmatic placeâwas it the right choice? did that momentâthe feeling of his lips on yoursâtruly change anything between you? did he think about it as often as you did?
the initial shock and disbelief of reuniting with caleb, after weeks spent mourning him, had begun to settle by your second night in skyhaven. the whirlwind of emotions that came with seeing him aliveârelief, confusion, and a flicker of angerâfaded into a dull hum as reality set in. as the day dragged on, with caleb strictly advising you not to leave his sleeping quartersâ floor, you found yourself with plenty of time to adjust to the strange circumstances you now found yourself in.
your first day here had passed quietly, an uneasy stillness settling over you. you hadnât yet met any of calebâs colleagues. the only glimpse youâd gotten of them was when you both arrived, their initial looks of curiosity quickly extinguished by calebâs commanding presence. whatever questions they had, they didnât dare voice them. his authority was absolute, and for now, it shielded you from the world beyond his floorâbut it also left you feeling isolated, a stranger in this new environment.
the second day started and ended much like the firstâconfined to his bedchambers, with nothing but your thoughts and the ever-changing view from the huge floor-to-ceiling windows in his room. you spent hours there, caught in a trance as the sky shifted through an endless palette of colors, clouds forming and dissolving in shapes that seemed just as fleeting as your grip on this new reality.
calebâs presence was everywhere and that made you a little dizzy. his scent lingered in the shirts he had lent you, in the bed sheets that cradled you at night, a warm mix of leather, musk, and something distinctly his own. his quarters, though rarely used given how much of his time was consumed by work, were unmistakably a reflection of him.
the room was awash in muted greys, from the smooth metallic walls to the minimalist furniture that prioritized function over form. cabinets lined one side, adorned with badges from past missionsâquiet tokens of his history, his sacrifices, and his triumphs. their arrangement felt almost random, yet carried a subtle, unspoken order.
his bed, though crisply made, was an island of softness in the otherwise sharp-edged decor. a worn leather jacket hung by the door, its scuffed edges a contrast to the polished surface of his boots, lined perfectly beneath. on the desk in the corner, a stack of reports waited alongside a notebook with frayed edges, a relic of a more personal side of him he rarely let anyone see.
when reality came crashing down, you realized that you felt no different than when you were a little kidâadmiring the boy of your dreams from a distance, your heart caught between hope and the quiet certainty that this dream was just that: a dream. the same ache lingered, a mixture of longing and doubt. you felt closer to that dream every time you caught caleb staring at you when he thought you were distracted.
speaking of ache, the injury youâd sustained a few days earlier during one of your missions was still fresh in your memory. the medic team at the farspace fleet had tended to it with precision, and that counted as the second time youâd interacted with anyone here. you hadnât meant to let it slip during your journey that your ribs were swollen from an accident at work, but caleb had noticedâand he wasnât about to let you brush it off.
when you tried to wave away his concerns, insisting you just needed rest, he didnât take it lightly. his worry for you came out in an unusual wayâfirm, commanding, and impossible to ignore. he barked orders at the medic team with an authority that left no room for argument, his voice sharp and unwavering. watching him threaten them to ensure you received the best care, you couldnât help but feel like he wasnât just acting as a colonelâhe was someone who cared deeply for you.Â
as the clock marked the start of your third day as calebâs reluctant guest, you rose from his bed, the routine as monotonous as the view outside. you slipped into fresh clothesâdespite having no prospect of seeing anyone besides calebâand began your habitual ritual of tidying up his space, a quiet attempt to pass the time and bring a sliver of normalcy to the strange circumstances.
you were certain the colonel wouldnât mind if you spent the day lounging in his shirtâit wasnât like heâd complainâbut there was something about maintaining a semblance of decency that felt necessary. maybe it was your way of reminding yourself that you and caleb werenât pre-teenagers cuddling in grannyâs sofa like you used to anymore, now you were both adults.
calebâs presence in the room was fleeting, almost ghostlike. you always fell asleep before he returned and woke to find the bed cold and empty, his absence a constant companion. and yet, in the stillness of the night, there were momentsâfleeting, but undeniableâwhen you stirred just enough to feel him. his arm would circle your waist, his breath soft against your hair. it was never long enough to fully wake, but just enough to remind you that he was there, in his own quiet, guarded way.
and there it goes your attempt at decency once again.
youâd joked once about how he was keeping you hostage, trying to lighten the mood of your strange arrangement. caleb had smirked at your remark, that faint, knowing curve of his lips that you used to know what it meant but couldnât pinpoint it anymore. âbe patientâ, heâd teased, throwing out that stupid nickname heâd decided to saddle you with since kids. then, with his usual abruptness, heâd turned to leave, disappearing for yet another task that demanded his attention.
you caught yourself daydreaming about kicking his ass more times than you wanted to admit, but refrained from it because of the little consideration you had for the man. caleb had always been more than a mere presence in your life. growing up, he had been both a confidant and the object of an innocent, unspoken infatuation.Â
back at school, you remembered the way your classmates would fawn over him after the whole chronorift thing happened, their voices tinged with admiration and awe. it had stirred a quiet possessiveness in you that you hadnât fully acknowledged until nowâuntil two nights ago, when he brought you to the farspace fleet. the way the other daa soldiers regarded him, with a mixture of respect and fear, reminded you of those little girls in school, seeing him as someone out of reach.Â
the sound of your footsteps echoed faintly in the silence of calebâs quarters as you paced, restless energy building with nowhere to go. the midday light filtering through the observation deck window cast long shadows, shifting subtly as the minutes dragged into hours. youâd spent the morning turning over every piece of information caleb had given youâtrying to make sense of his cryptic remarks.
you had thought about confronting him more than once, but every time you pictured his sharp gaze and those carefully chosen, guarded responses, you stopped yourself. caleb didnât share things easily like he used to, and if he was keeping you in the dark now, there had to be a reason. but patience had never been your strong suit, and the isolation of the past three days only made your doubts heavier, pressing against your thoughts like an unshakable weight.
as the door to his quarters hissed open, your heart jumped, the sound breaking the stillness like a gunshot. caleb stepped inside, his movements precise, his expression unreadable. his uniform was slightly rumpled, the dark fabric clinging to his frame, and a faint sheen of sweat on his brow suggested whatever task heâd been called to wasnât as simple as he might claim.
âyouâre still up here,â he observed, his tone neutral but his gaze flicking over you briefly before settling on the desk where heâd left a stack of reports.
âwhere else would i be?â you replied, trying to mask the tension in your voice. âyou made it pretty clear this is my designated prison cell.â
his lips quirked into that familiar smirk. âif this is a prison, iâd say youâve got the best cell in the fleet.â
you rolled your eyes at his response, folding your arms across your chest. âsure, best cell in the fleet,â you muttered, your tone dripping with sarcasm. âitâs not like i have much to compare it to.â
caleb chuckled softly, his smirk lingering as he moved toward the desk, casually thumbing through the stack of reports. âyouâve got a knack for making everything sound like an ordeal,â he said, glancing at your choice of clothes for the dayâit wasnât anything crazy, just some jeans and a black compression shirt. caleb didnât gave you time to actually pack your stuff, of course. âbut youâll want to save your complaints for later. something tells me youâre about to get more to gripe about.â
before you could ask what he meant, the door hissed open again, and a small team of people entered, their arrival so abrupt it left you momentarily stunned. they carried garment bags and cases, moving efficiently under calebâs orders. he turned to you, his expression unreadable but his tone calm and firm.
âgo with them,â he said simply. âtheyâll help you get ready.â
you stared at him, incredulous. âready for what?â
âitâs time for you to get out of here,â he said, his tone firm yet measured. âyou need to meet some people. thereâs an interrogation set up, and theyâre going to need answersâeverything you know about onychinus, the aether core, and ever. try to dig up whatever you can remember about your time in the lab,â he added, his lips curving into a faint smile. âthat should keep them satisfied, princess.â
your body tensed at the mention of onychinus. it was a name you didnât expect to hear here, of all places, and the weight of it hit you like a blow to the chest. your gaze snapped to caleb, your mind already racing. how much did he know? how much had he told them?
âonychinus?â you repeated, your voice sharper than you intended. âhow do they even know about that?â
did they know about sylus?
calebâs expression remained unreadable, his amethystine eyes cool and steady, but there was a flicker of something he wasnât saying. âthis isnât just about you anymore,â he replied simply. âthey need answers. so do i.â
âand the lab?â you snapped, your frustration bubbling to the surface. âwhat the hell is that supposed to mean? i donât know shit about that place, caleb. i already told you. itâs hard enough to believe iâm some kind of fucking experiment.â
he sighed heavily, the sound more resigned than exasperated. âweâve talked about this,â he said, his voice steady but with a tinge of weariness, as if the conversation had played out in his head a hundred times already.
âno,â you shot back, stepping closer, your voice trembling with emotion. âyou talked about this. you told me weâre human weapons, made to destroy each other. you told me about your time before the chronorift and granny josephine.â your voice faltered for a moment, your breath hitching. âand i told you, caleb, i donât remember any procedures being done without my consent. even after the chronorift tragedy. you should stop fretting me about this.â
âyou donât remember,â he said quietly, his amethystine eyes holding yours with a steady intensity. âthatâs fine. i didnât either, at first.â he paused, the faintest flicker of something unreadable crossing his face before he continued. âbut i hope we can talk about this again later, when you finally do remember.â
his voice dropped lower. âtrust me,â he said, the words heavy with meaning. âyouâre going to want me by your side when that happens.â
you narrowed your eyes, your tone turning accusatory. âand what about you? are they interrogating you too, or is this just about me?â
he tilted his head slightly, his lips curving into that faint smirk that was equal parts infuriating and captivating. âi was the one who asked for your interrogation,â he said, his voice calm, almost casual, as if he hadnât just dropped a bombshell.
âwhat do you mean, you asked?â you demanded, stepping closer to him, your heart pounding in your chest. the sheer size of him, amplified by the sharp lines of his uniform, made him feel larger than life. the dark fabric clung to his frame, accentuating his out worldly height.
his perfume was also divine.
âi need to make sure youâre telling the truth,â he said, his tone firm but not unkind. the words hung in the air, a challenge wrapped in concern. his bionic arm rested at his side, the faint hum of its servos almost lost in the tension between you.
your breath hitched, a mix of anger and hurt bubbling to the surface. âyou donât trust me,â you said, your voice quieter now, though no less sharp. âafter the stunt you pulled at grannyâs house, i should be the one not to trust youâ.
his gaze softened, just for a moment, but then his expression hardened again, the familiar steel returning to his eyes. âthis isnât about trust,â he said, his voice low and steady. âitâs about knowing what weâre up against. i canât afford to take chancesânot with you, not with anyone.â
you felt the heat rise to your cheeks, your fists clenching at your sides. âyouâre not the caleb i remember,â you muttered, the words slipping out before you could stop them.
his jaw tightened, and he stepped closer, his presence overwhelming. the sharp lines of his uniform, the way his eyes seemed to pierce right through youâit was almost too much. âiâm not,â he said, his voice a rough whisper. âthat boyâs gone. at least the part of him that had to change so i could protect you right now. and if you canât handle thatââ
âdonât,â you interrupted, your voice shaking slightly. âjust forget it.â
the tension between you crackled like static, the air too heavy to breathe. finally, he exhaled, the sound more controlled than the storm in his eyes. âafter the interrogation,â he said, his tone softening just a fraction, âyouâll be free to move around skyhaven. no more confinement.â
you didnât respond, your throat tight with words you couldnât bring yourself to say. as if sensing the shift, caleb straightened, his imposing figure softening just slightly as he stepped closer. his expression shifted to something quieter, almost tender.
âhey,â he said softly, his voice dropping to that low, comforting tone he used when he wanted you to listen. his flesh hand gently cradled your cheek, the warmth of his touch grounding you, even as you stubbornly refused to meet his gaze. âyou know you can trust me, right? pipsqueak?â
the nickname caught you off guard, tugging at something familiar, something from a time when things felt simpler. you blinked, unsure whether to be annoyed or comforted by the teasing lilt in his voice. âdonât call me that,â you muttered, though your heart wasnât in it.Â
you blinked hard, feeling the sting of unshed tears threatening to spill over. your chest tightened as the emotions youâd been trying to bury the last two days clawed their way to the surface. his thumb brushed against your cheek, a quiet, unspoken reassurance.
âlook at me,â he murmured, his voice so soft it was almost a plea. when you didnât, he leaned in just enough for you to feel the warmth of his breath.Â
the warmth in his eyes didnât fade. âstop acting like you donât trust me,â he said, the teasing edge softening into something more serious. âi know this isnât easy for you. hell, itâs not easy for me either. but i need you to believe me when i say iâm doing this for usâfor you.â
âfor me?â you repeated, your voice laced with annoyance as you crossed your arms. âyou shouldnât keep me in the dark like this, caleb. i donât like it.â
his expression faltered for just a second, a flicker of guilt crossing his features before he straightened again, his bionic arm twitching faintly at his side. âitâs not that i donât trust you,â he said, his voice firm but not harsh. âitâs that i need to protect you. and sometimes⊠that means making decisions youâre not going to like.â
you swallowed hard, his words settling heavily in your chest. he reached out then, his human hand brushing lightly against your arm, grounding you with a touch that was more deliberate than casual.
âyou know me,â he whispered in your ear, leaning in slightly, his voice so quiet it was almost a secret. âyou know iâd never let anything happen to you. youâre the only one iâve ever been able to count on. donât forget that, okay?â
after that, caleb took a step away from you, nodding to the team waiting by the door.
âget her ready,â he ordered, his voice carrying that same commanding edge that left no room for argument.
the team ushered you into a side room, where they worked quickly and efficiently to help you change. the uniform they presented was a masterpieceâsleek and custom-fitted, clearly designed to match the style of calebâs but with details tailored to you. the base was a deep charcoal grey, nearly black, with white, red and gold piping along the seams and shoulders that shimmered faintly in the light. the high collar hugged your neck, its edges trimmed with subtle leather lines.
the fabric was sturdy yet flexible, designed for both movement and protection, while still accentuating your figure with precision. the insignia on the chest was a smaller, more refined version of the fleetâs emblem, embossed in gold. the sleeves bore intricate embroidery that hinted at your stats as a companion, adding a touch of elegance to the otherwise utilitarian design. the boots were polished to perfection, completing the look with a sense of authority and efficiency.
the team handed you the final piece of the uniformâa sleek military-style hat reminiscent of a pilotâs, crafted with the same precision and detail as the rest of the attire. its charcoal-grey base was accented with a polished silver insignia of the fleet, the mark of the deepspace aviation administration that gleamed in the light.Â
the room buzzed with quiet efficiency as the staff worked around you, their movements quick but deliberate. the space itself was bright and sterile, with sleek metallic walls that reflected the soft hum of machinery. the air carried a faint smell of ozone and disinfectant, underscoring the precision of the environment. each member of the team seemed hyper-focused on their tasksâadjusting a seam here, brushing away an invisible speck of lint thereâall while maintaining a level of deference that left you slightly uneasy.
their respect toward you wasnât forced, but it felt oddly out of place, as if it was more a reflection of calebâs authority than anything youâd earned. you caught snippets of murmured conversation between them, their glances respectful yet curious, as though they were trying to piece together who you were and why caleb had ordered such meticulous preparation for you.
when they finished, you stepped out into the hall where caleb was waiting. he stood with his back to you, his broad shoulders filling the space, his bionic arm resting at his side.Â
for a split second you imagined yourself kicking his ass once again and making him fall face first on the floor for the way heâd been avoiding you the last two days. but then you remembered where you were and what you were doing here.
youâre not lying when saying you had spent a few seconds just glancing at his back without his notice. the sharp lines of his uniform only emphasized the commanding presence he carried, making him look every bit the colonel he was. the moment he felt your presence, he turned, his amethyst eyes locking onto you.
for a moment, caleb didnât say anything. his gaze swept over you, slow and deliberate, taking in every detail of the uniform. his expression was unreadable, but his eyes held something deeperâpride, maybe, or something more possessive.
âit fits,â he said finally, his voice low and steady,Â
âbarely,â you replied, attempting to lighten the moment, though the intensity of his stare made your voice falter.
he stepped closer, his movements deliberate, his gaze never leaving yours. âno,â he said, his lips twitching into the faintest smirk. âit fits perfectly.â
his eyes swept over you again, lingering just a fraction too long to be casual. âactually,â he murmured, his voice dropping an octave, âit does more than fit. you lookâŠâ he paused, tilting his head slightly as if searching for the right word, though the gleam in his eyes told you he already knew. âexceptional.â
you felt heat rise to your cheeks, his compliment catching you off guard. âexceptional?â you echoed, attempting to keep your voice steady, though it betrayed you with a slight waver. âdidnât think you were the type to throw around fancy words like that, colonel.â
his smirk deepened, the teasing edge in his gaze making your pulse quicken. âi donât throw them around,â he said smoothly. âonly when theyâre deserved.â
the way he looked at you made your breath hitch, the weight of his presence making the space between you feel charged. âyou didnât have to go through all this trouble,â you murmured, your fingers brushing over the insignia on your chest.
âi did,â he replied simply, his voice dropping even lower. âyouâre with me now. they need to see that.â his gaze softened just enough to let a flicker of vulnerability show before it disappeared. âare you ready?â
no, iâm not, you wanted to say, but you doubted your insecurity would make a difference here. you were a hunter on a mission right now, and any false step could lead to your demise and calebâs plan failing. you hoped he didnât sense your nervousness, but something told you that you couldnât hide anything from the man beside you. he always knew how to read youâthis part of him resembled zayne a little, though you feared the comparison.
you walked side by side out of the sleeping quarters, your boots echoing softly against the polished floors. the corridor was a stark contrast to the warmth of calebâs quartersâbright, sterile, and buzzing with activity. as soon as you stepped into view, every officer and soldier below calebâs rank stopped their tasks, snapping to attention with a crisp salute. the air seemed to shift, charged with an unspoken reverence for the colonel.
the corridor led to an expansive atrium, its vaulted ceiling revealing the full grandeur of skyhaven. the deepspace aviation administration headquarters was a masterpiece of engineering, blending sleek modernity with a palpable sense of purpose. towering support structures arched gracefully overhead, made of an alloy that shimmered faintly under the artificial lighting. expansive observation windows lined the atrium walls, offering a breathtaking view of linkon city far below.
skyhaven itself was an artificial marvel, a massive floating island suspended by an intricate network of protocore technology and magnetic stabilizers. the island wasnât just a hub for the militaryâit was a living ecosystem of cutting-edge science and aviation. beneath the steel and glass exterior, skyhaven buzzed with life, housing research centers, training facilities, and state-of-the-art hangars that extended far beyond the viewable limits.
as you glanced out one of the observation windows, a small sigh of relief escaped your lips. linkon city stretched far below, its familiar skyline bathed in the amber glow of the sun. despite everythingâyour doubts, your fearsâthere was something comforting about seeing the world from this vantage point. for a moment, you let yourself appreciate the surreal beauty of it, even as calebâs brisk pace pulled you back into the present.
as you approached the center of the base, the architecture shifted subtly, becoming even more advanced. panels of polished black metal lined the walls, embedded with glowing data streams that flickered in shades of blue and green. interactive holographic displays projected tactical maps, fleet status reports, and complex equations, their light casting faint patterns across the gleaming floor.
caleb led you through a security checkpoint, where biometric scanners and advanced surveillance systems verified your presence. the guards at the station snapped to attention at his approach, their expressions taut with respect. beyond the checkpoint, the central operations hub opened upâa sprawling room filled with tiered workstations and holo-screens that hovered mid-air.
in the heart of the hub stood a group that was unmistakably different. clad in black tactical uniforms, their gear adorned with the subtle insignia of ever, this was the special force. they didnât salute caleb as the others had; their deference was more subtle, marked by a slight inclination of their heads and a sharp, assessing glance in your direction.
you felt your blood boil as your gaze landed on the emblem stitched into their uniformsâthe unmistakable insignia of ever. the sight of it twisted your stomach, bringing back every sleepless night, every unanswered question that had haunted you since josephineâs death. zayneâs reluctant handoff of those cryptic documents had started it all, but it was the whispers of ever that had lingered at the edges of your stay at the N109 zone and your time at the nest that really troubled you.
and now, here they were, not just a name on a paper or a faint memory on onychinusâ air, but living, breathing soldiers standing right in front of you. their presence was as real as the knot forming in your chest.Â
one of them stepped forward, a woman with sharp features and piercing eyes that seemed to miss nothing. her voice was calm but firm. âcolonel,â she said, her gaze briefly flicking to you. âthe team is ready for the briefing. weâve set up in conference room XO2.â
your gaze darted to caleb, who was speaking with the woman at the forefront of everâs team. his tone was steady, his expression calm, but to you, it was infuriatingly unreadable. how could he be so composed? how could he stand there, shoulder to shoulder with the people who might have made you both into weapons? your mind raced with fragments of memory and half-formed theories.
calebâs words echoed in your mind: âweâre human weapons, made to destroy each other.â it was a concept youâd rejected at first, clinging to the idea that you were still whole, just a hunter with a weird heart. but the cracks had started to show. the unnatural resilience, the strange flashes of memory that felt both foreign and familiar, the way calebâs presence had always felt like a tether. had josephine known? had she always known what you were? was that why she left you those documents, why sheâd placed zayne in your path?Â
as you walked toward the mentioned room, the sound of your boots echoed faintly in the metallic corridor, mingling with the synchronized footsteps of the armed guards flanking you. their presence was suffocating, a living barricade of authority around you. their weapons were sleek and unrelenting.
the corridor opened up into a larger chamber, the entrance marked by a reinforced door flanked by additional guards. their posture was identical to the others, their faces emotionless masks as they stepped aside to let you pass. the door hissed open with a low, mechanical groan, revealing a room that was as starkly advanced as the rest of skyhaven.
as you waited for caleb to acknowledge you, suddenly all of the guards left, leaving only caleb, you and the lady in the room.
caleb gestured for you to take a seat, his voice low but firm. âsit,â he said, his tone leaving no room for argument. you hesitated for a fraction of a second, your gaze flicking to him before complying. the grey-haired woman took a seat across from you, her sharp eyes meeting yours with an intensity that made your pulse quicken.
caleb remained standing, his hands resting on the back of the chair beside you. his presence was steady, but you could feel the tension radiating from him. he leaned down, close enough that you could feel the warmth of his breath against your ear.
"do as youâre told and donât cause any trouble," he whispered, his voice low and edged with an authority that sent a shiver down your spine. "you wonât get hurt, then."
your body stiffened at his words, your fists curling slightly against the cool surface of the table. despite the sharpness in his tone, there was an undercurrent of something elseâsomething almost protective.
the grey-haired womanâyou still didnât know her nameâexchanged a few words with caleb and then rose from her seat completely ignoring you. her heels clicked against the floor as she strode toward the door, her sharp gaze lingering on you for a moment before she exited. you caught the faintest glint of approval in her eyes as she passed. the door hissed shut behind her, leaving you and caleb alone in the room⊠or so it seemed. you glanced to the side, catching sight of the conference window. she was still there, standing with her arms crossed, her sharp silhouette illuminated by the sterile glow of the room beyond. a microphone sat near her hand, her presence palpable even in her absence.
"if youâre understanding the situation, then letâs go ahead and have a nice chat, right, pipsqueak?â caleb said, straightening and placing his hands on the table. âthereâs more than one pair of eyes observing you in this room and it will be over before you know it". if he was trying to console you, he was doing a terrible job.
the investigation started with stupid questions like what was your name, age and evol. questions about the chronorift catastrophe resurfaced and time dragged slow by the time caleb got to the more important questions. your patience were running thin, asking yourself why was the need of all this bullshit if they wouldnât explain things to you at the end of the day.
calebâs monotone tone annoyed you more than anything, but the eyes observing you in this room stopped you from starting a childish banter with the colonel. speaking of eyes, the grey-haired-scary woman kept hers on you the whole time. you could feel her obsession over this ever entity all the way from fucking linkon city. you hated it.
as time passed by, you started to grow restless when he got to ask the questions about granny. it was infuriating the way he was speaking like he wasnât there the whole timeâlike he wasnât the other child that josephine took under her wing.Â
your anger faltered when caleb reached into his jacket and pulled out a stack of papers. the documents slid across the table with a deliberate motion, their edges crisp and yellowed with age. the faint scent of old paper mixed with the sterile tang of the room. âthese,â he said, tapping the top of the stack with two fingers, âare her personnel files from ever.â
his words hit like a punch to the gut. for a moment, all you could do was stare at him, your mind struggling to process what heâd just said. the room seemed to tilt, and you gripped the edge of the chair to steady yourself.
âwhat?â, your throat was hoarse from answering all of the stupid questions previously, leaving you with a sense of laziness.
âthis is what we were capable of gathering from the ever base, turns out they didnât questioned why we needed it at allâ. his words hung in the air as if taunting you.
âwhat are you on about, caleb?â the words escaped your lips, hollow and trembling. the honorifics were gone now, discarded the second his eyes shifted toward the grey-haired woman observing from the other room.Â
âwould you at least look at it first?â, his annoyed tone made your blood boil.
ânot if youâre going to keep playing me, this is not funny.â even after you said that, his lips quirked into a milimetrical smirk.
âiâm not asking you to jump from the observation deck, pipsqueak, iâm asking you to read our grannyâs documentsâ.
you wanted to laughâthis was absurd. it had to be.
âi donât have a reason to lie to you, do i?â he replied, his voice maddeningly calm. that infuriating tone of hisâit made you want to reach across the table and slap the smugness off his face. how dare he accuse the woman who had raised you, who had raised both of you, of being involved in something as insidious as this entity?
âshut up and stop running in circles!â you shoved the chair back as you stood, the legs screeching against the floor. you leaned forward, eyes locked on his with a fire that demanded answers. âis this a game to you? did i come all the way from linkon city for nothing? you said you would help me.â
âand i am helping you.â calebâs reply was calm, as if he werenât phased by your outburst. âthis is the truth, princess.â
princess. there it was againâthat nickname, so casual and so utterly out of place in a room filled with cold, calculated tension. did no one else find it strange that the colonel of the daa was speaking to you like this? a glance at the observation window confirmed that the grey-haired woman hadnât moved an inch. her gaze remained fixed, expression unreadable.
what had caleb told her about you? about this? and why in godâs name had you agreed to any of it in the first place?
âY/N.â his voice snapped through the air, sharp and commanding. he saw the way your legs shifted toward the door, the way your hands twitched with the urge to leave. before you could move, his hand shot out, wrapping around your wrist. the contact wasnât rough, but the authority in his grip held you in place. his eyes met yours, and for a second, you froze under the weight of that gaze. it was as if the word âbehaveâ was scrawled across his face, an order you couldnât defy.
why did he need you to believe in things that felt so unexplainable? what was he trying so hard to convince you?
âshe was recruited at thirty-one,â caleb continued, as if you werenât about to leave this place for good instants ago. âstraight out of her postdoctoral research in applied quantum mechanics and energy manipulation. she was already making waves in the scientific community, so ever snapped her up for their advanced energy division.â
âyou donât even know what youâre talking aboutâ. you defended, freeing your hand from his grip and crossing your arms with anger.
âhave you never asked yourself why granny didnât move houses?â, his eyes were fixed on you, the moment charged with unexplained betrayal. still, he didnât stop there. âshe hated that neighborhood and always complained about the kids leaving trash on the sidewalks. still, she never moved. have you never thought about how she was always alone, didnât had friends, no one visited? how she was able to afford your college? she never spoke about having children and her family never called.â
the rage that had fueled you moments ago was now dulled by confusion. the image of herâyour grandmother, your rockâshifted in your mind, colliding with the version caleb was painting. a version you couldnât reconcile with the woman who used to hum lullabies while baking or press a kiss to your forehead after long days.
but the conviction in calebâs tone was undeniable, and the papers lying between you were a damning testament to something you werenât ready to face.
hesitant, you reached for the documents, your fingers trembling. the top page bore a formal header: EVER CORPORATION - PERSONNEL DOSSIER: DR. JOSEPHINE. below it, a photograph of your grandmother stared back at you, her sharp features framed by neatly pinned hair and a lab coat adorned with various badges of rank.
you scanned the documents, words like chief research officer and project architect leaping out at you. âshe was the head scientist?â you asked, your voice barely audible.
fucking hell. this was impossible.
ânot just head scientist,â caleb said. âshe was promoted to director of advanced energy systems by thirty-five. she oversaw the development of key protocore technologies before spearheading project aether. these reports,â he gestured to the papers, âdetail her work in bioenergetics, quantum harmonics, and adaptive energy matrices. she didnât just design the aether coreâshe built the framework that made it possible.â
he made a pause to glance at you. you felt his eyes on you, heavy with meaning, but you couldnât bring yourself to stop reading the details in front of you. every line on the page chipped away at the foundation of what you thought you knew.
âi know this because we used to work together.â the words sliced through the sterile air, shattering the fragile barrier between your disbelief and the truth he was forcing on you. there it was againâan unexplainable revelation that felt shattering and wrong.
what was that again?
your hands froze, trembling slightly as the paper slipped from your grasp. your eyes lifted to meet his, and for a moment, the rest of the room faded into nothing. the hat was off his head now, his fluffy hair slightly mussed as if this moment required something more personal, more vulnerable. it didnât match the clinical coldness of the room or the gaze of the grey-haired woman observing from the corner. it felt intimate, despite the invasive presence lurking just behind the glass.
âwhat is that supposed to mean?â, your heart was beating like crazy, you could feel the vibrations thrumming through your ears. âi donât⊠i donât believe youâ.
âshe recruited me to take care of you.â his voice was quieter now, and for the first time, you saw a flicker of something raw in his expression. empathy, maybe. or guilt. it was enough to make him look away, his gaze dropping to the papers spread between you. âas an experiment.â
his words hung in the air like a loaded weapon. the tingling sensation that ran down your spine turned into a full-body shiver. your breath hitched, and tears stung at the corners of your eyes, threatening to spill over. your throat tightened as the weight of what he was saying settled in, suffocating and relentless.
âimpossible. granny wasnât a woman on a mission, she wasâŠâ, you gulped, âshe was intelligent and kind.â
the room spinned, your breath hitched. again, the situation was sadly laughable. were those times you dreamed about blood, about a life that didnât seem to belong to you all real? were they fragments of your memory? werenât they just coincidences?
gods, how were you so stupid? how did you never think about this?
âwas all of this ever all along?â you muttered, the words tasting bitter on your tongue. the room felt too small, the air too stifling. your hands clenched into fists at your sides, and for a fleeting moment, you wanted to punch something, anything. it felt childish, but the frustration boiling in your chest demanded release.
âwhy would she hide this?â your voice cracked as you spoke, trembling with the weight of everything you were trying to hold back. âwhy wouldnât she tell me?â
you didnât see a reason to keep this from you. from your life. would you even know about this if you never blindly agreed to show your face in the nest that day? how could something so enormous not make itself accidentally aware throughout oneâs whole life?
and how could you be so stupidly blind? what were you, a child?
calebâs gaze softened slightly. âbecause she knew what ever would do if they thought you were a threat at that time. she hid the truth to protect you, but in doing so, she left you vulnerable. and now, weâre all paying the price.â
âprotecting me?â you echoed, your voice laced with disbelief. âhow is lying to me, hiding everything, supposed to protect me? she left me completely blind!â
you were so angry. angry at yourself, angry at the woman who raised you, angry at caleb for not telling you, angry even at fucking zayne for handling you those documents from you. he probably also had secrets about your heartâs condition that he never talked about.
how could anyone possibly hide something like this from you? werenât they your friends?
how did betrayal felt so bitter and deserving at the same time?
âyou were a kid, Y/N,â caleb said, his voice calm but laced with an edge of frustration, as though he were trying to reason with a storm.
âso were you!â you snapped, the words sharp and cutting. the knot of anger and betrayal in your chest tightened, spreading like fire through your veins. âyou never⊠did you never think about how i would feel? god, caleb.â
caleb leaned forward, his elbows resting on the table, his fingers interlocking as he spoke. âshe left you blind because she knew they were watching. she couldnât risk them finding out how much she cared about you, how far she was willing to go to shield you. the second they saw you as a threatâor as leverageâeverything sheâd done would have been for nothing.â
his words settled over you like a heavy fog, dense and suffocating. you wanted to reject them, to push back against the idea that your grandmotherâthe woman who had been your everythingâhad willingly kept you in the dark about a past so entwined with danger.Â
âdid she fucking planned her death as well? did she know about the explosion that day?â. you were practically raging now, venom laced with hurt spitting from your mouth as your body leaned over the table, trying to make caleb snap you back into reality. why was he telling you all of these nonsense?
âshe asked me to end her the moment she posed a threat to you. she didnât know about the explosion, i didnât tell her.â his low tone showed a masked hurt that almost offended you.
oh, you were so pissed.
âso, what?â you said. âshe let them turn me into this⊠thing? this experiment? and then she just⊠left?â
âshe didnât just leave. she stayed in their system as long as she could, long enough to set things in motion for you to have a chance of surviving. she made choices that no one should ever have to make, and she paid for them.â your eyes watered and your chest tightened.Â
âdo i really have a chance?â you asked, your voice trembling as you pointed toward the grey-haired woman standing beyond the glass. âisnât she from ever? what are you doing with these people, caleb? heavens, i canât even understand you anymore.â
his face didnât change immediately, but his shoulders seemed to tense, the weight of your words pressing down on him. when he spoke, his voice was low, steady. âjosephine told me everything,â he began, his gaze dropping to the table for just a moment. âright after i turned old enough to understand what it all meant. she didnât just tell meâshe made me promise.â
âpromise what?!â your voice cracked, and the anger that had been simmering inside you surged again, fueled by the sharp sting of treachery.
âto protect you,â he said, his words slow and deliberate, as though each one was a confession. âshe used me, Y/N. she knew what was going to happen. she knew what theyâd try to do to you, what theyâd use you for. and she⊠she made me a part of her plan.â
âher plan?â you echoed, the bitterness in your voice cutting through the air. âwhat plan, caleb? because from where iâm standing, all i see is a mess she left for me to clean up.â
his jaw tightened, and he finally looked back at you, his amethyst eyes sharp but filled with something raw and unspoken. âit wasnât just her plan. it became mine too. i let her use me, Y/N, because i thoughtâi hopedâit would mean youâd never have to deal with this. i thought i could handle it for both of us.â
âand what?â you snapped, leaning forward as your frustration boiled over. âyou just decided for me? you and her both?â
âi didnât decide for you,â he shot back, his voice rising for the first time, though his control quickly reined it in. âi decided to protect you. thereâs a difference.â
âwhy would you do that?â you asked, your voice quieter now but no less cutting. âbecause it feels like all both of you did was trap me in this endless nightmare.â
calebâs patience snapped. you saw the moment it happenedâsomething dark flickered behind his eyes, replacing the calm exterior heâd been holding onto. without warning, he rose from his chair, the scrape of metal against the floor echoing through the room. before you could react, his hands slammed down on the table on either side of you, caging you in with his sheer presence.
he leaned over you, his frame engulfing yours entirely. his proximity forced you backward, the cool surface of the table pressing against your spine as you arched slightly to meet his gaze. the shift in his demeanor sent a shiver down your spineânot fear, but something far more complicated. his presence was suffocating, his intensity overwhelming, and yet you couldnât look away.
if anyone entered the room now, they wouldnât even know you were there, hidden entirely behind his broad frame. he was closeâtoo closeâand every inch of him radiated authority and tension.Â
you still felt anger pulse inside you. even with his figure towering over you, you stared right back into his eyes, daring him to explain. but caleb wasnât waiting for your permission to speakâhis words spilled out, sharp and unrelenting, as though heâd been holding them in for far too long.
âyou can scream all you want, princess,â he began, his voice dangerously low but cutting, âbut iâm not letting you blame the woman who gave me the chance of loving you for something she regretted every day of her life until the day she died.â his eyes burned into yours, daring you to interrupt, but you stayed silent, your breath caught in your throat.
âshe designed the aether core,â he continued, the words bitter, as if they left a bad taste in his mouth, âbut she didnât know it was going to be put in a fucking child. she told me that. she swore it to me.â his voice cracked slightly, a rare vulnerability slipping through before he pressed on.
âshe would never partake in something so inhuman and cruel if sheâd known about it,â he said, his tone hardening again. âwhen she realized what they were doingâwhat you wereâshe made a choice. she couldâve run and left us behind, but she didnât do that.â his gaze softened for a brief moment before his jaw tightened. âshe took us with her.â
his next words struck you like a blow. âever knew the potential the aether core had. so they created an antidote. me.â
the silence that followed was deafening, his confession hanging heavy in the air between you. your heart raced, but you couldnât bring yourself to respondânot yet.Â
âbefore i even knew you, princess, our destinies were bound,â he said, his voice quieter now, but no less intense. âwe were never meant to be anything elseâtwo halves of a cruel design, bound together by ruthless people driven by intense power.â
he leaned in slightly, his presence overwhelming. âwhen she told me everything, when i finally understood, i made a choice. i sacrificed myself to continue the fucking experiments ever wanted me to participate, so no one else in this world would have the capacity to destroy you other than me.â he straightened, his tone heavy with finality. âonly me.â
you heard your own hiccup as if it were from somene else.
"kirsten was her colleague," caleb said, his voice steady but carrying an edge of urgency. "she also left the project behind when things got heated. since then, theyâve been trying to capture you. she was the one who handed me these documents." he gestured toward the stack of papers, his gaze flicking briefly to the woman observing you from beyond the glass. "grandma trusted her."
your surprise was impossible to hide. your eyes darted to the woman, her stoic presence now layered with a significance you hadnât grasped until this moment.
"we both are trying to find a way to protect you," caleb continued, his tone firm. "and infiltrating ever is the first step to do that. we need to gather as much information we can and gain their trust so we can take them down and their fucking crazy plan of interstellar domination."
oh fuck, they wanted the aether core for that?
he leaned closer, his eyes locking onto yours with an intensity that made your breath catch. "do you understand it now, pipsqueak?" his voice softened at the nickname, but the weight of his words lingered, pressing into the space between you.
the room seemed to shrink as the truth settled over you like a heavy cloak, suffocating and cold. your chest tightened, and before you realized it, tears began streaming down your face, silent but relentless. you hadnât even noticed them falling until caleb stepped closer, his expression softening in a way that made your heart ache even more.
his hands cupped your cheeks, the calloused pads of his fingers brushing against your skin as he tried to wipe the tears away.Â
âdo you understand how i need you to live, princess?â calebâs voice cracked, raw with emotion, tugging at strings in your heart you didnât even realize were there. âi love you so much, you have no idea the limits iâd go to prove it to you.â
his words settled over you like a tempest, leaving you breathless and trembling. it wasnât just what he saidâit was the way he said it, every syllable laced with unrelenting devotion and a darkness that both frightened and comforted you. you felt so dangerously cherished, as though his love could burn the world down if it meant keeping you safe.
the worst part? you could say you felt the same.
his grip on your face tightened, not painfully but with a firm desperation, his calloused thumbs brushing away the lingering wetness on your cheeks. his eyes softened as they held yours, the fierceness in them giving way to something almost pleading.
âif you want me to beg, iâll fucking beg you, princess. if you want me on my knees, iâll do it. just stay here with me where i can see you.â he whispered, his voice barely audible but impossibly steady, his tone dropped so low it was almost a growl, the sound vibrating through the air and sinking deep into your chest. his jaw tightened, the sharp angles of his face accentuated by the tension coiling in his body.Â
why did his love felt so crushing?
his hands stayed on your face, grounding you, but his grip was firm, as if he was afraid you might disappear if he let go. his eyes, dark and stormy, searched yours, waiting for an answer you werenât sure you could give.
âwhy are you doing this to me?â you finally whispered, your voice trembling under the weight of his confession. âwhy do you care so much?â the question felt sacred, as if it wasnât meant to be spoken aloud, but you couldnât keep it inside any longer.
his jaw tightened, his hands still cupping your face as his eyes locked onto yours. for a moment, he didnât speak, as though the answer was too heavy, too raw to give voice to.
âdid they hurt you, caleb?â you asked, your voice barely above a whisper. âin those experiments?â
your clenched fists, tight with anger and frustration, slowly dissolved into something softer. the tension in your body ebbed away, leaving only the raw ache in your chest. before you could second-guess yourself, your hands moved on their own, rising to his face. your fingertips brushed against his jaw, tentative at first, before settling into a gentle caress.
âthey can hurt me all they want,â caleb said, his voice low and raw, each word cutting through the air like a blade. âas long as they keep their distance from you, iâll endure it. iâd end myself if it meant that you would never be hurt again.â
his gaze bore into yours, fierce and unrelenting, yet there was a softness in his eyes that made your chest ache. it wasnât just desperationâit was devotion, the kind that threatened to drown you in its intensity.
âthey canât control my evol anymore, their plan of the antidote backfiredâ caleb said, his voice vulnerable as if only talking about that chamber already caused him agony. âthatâs why theyâre scared. the last neural control experimentâthe zero gravity chamber was destroyed because the machines couldnât handle it. they wanted to transform me into a robot, somehow my mind never cooperatedâ. his gaze averted to the emblem on your chest.
you swallowed hard, his words sinking into your brain like lead. âarenât we a danger to each other, caleb?â you asked, your voice trembling, hiccups breaking through as tears streaked your face. you were scared. âam i capable of hurting you? do i⊠isnât it dangerous if we stay together?â
he stared at you for a long moment, his gaze unwavering and intense. âif thereâs anyone in this world iâd let hurt me, itâs you, princess,â he said, planting a kiss on your forehead as he did when you were both kids. and then his tone shifted into something darker, almost obsessive. âi donât fucking care what you do to me, you can hurt me all you want if that makes you fucking happy. donât you understand?â
âdonât say thatâŠâ you murmured, trying to avert your gaze, your cheeks burning hot with embarrassment and suffocation.
he smirked, a sharp, knowing curve of his lips as his thumb brushed another tear from your cheek. âi want to create a world where itâs just the two of us,â he said, his voice dropping to a low whisper that sent shivers racing down your spine.
his bionic hand gripped your waist, pulling you flush against him, the unyielding strength of his hold making your breath hitch. he leaned in closer, so close his lips nearly brushed your ear. âjust say the word, and iâll do it,â he murmured, the heat of his breath against your skin sending your mind spinning. âiâll end everything. you know that.â
âcalebâŠâ you murmured, your palms pressing gently against his chest, trying to create even the smallest bit of distance between you. âi thought you had gone crazy.â your voice trembled as you looked up at him, the weight of his intensity still bearing down on you. âiâm sorry you had to endure that⊠because of me.â your breaths came quickly, your words tumbling out before you could stop them. âi⊠i still think youâre crazy, though.â
a flicker of amusement crossed his face, but you didnât give him a chance to reply.
âbut⊠what do we do now?â you asked, your voice barely above a whisper, your thoughts spinning wildly. âdo they know you brought me here?â.
âall of the personnel outside is from ever, they think iâm convincing you to willingly participate in the project. make you turn into some kind of sacrifice for humanity. bullshit.â just saying it out loud seemed painful for him, and hearing it sounded even more crazy.
âthey wanted to start everything straight away, test the energy of the aether core inside of you before we could even talk. i convinced them to let me handle you, thatâs why i canât let you leave skyhaven for now.â he sounded almost guilty when saying those words, waiting patiently for your reaction so he could be deemed innocent.
âso i am your hostage, basically?â, something akin to amusement surged in your face, dried tears staining your rosy cheeks.
âthat depends if you are willing to cooperate, just say the word and iâll fly us across west coast immediately.â his gaze made you feel the most heartbroken and cherished woman in the world. cruel. âi donât plan to stay here foreverâ.
âwhat about kirstââ your words stopped abruptly as realization struck you like a lightning bolt. your eyes widened as your breath hitched in your throat. âoh my fucking god, caleb, kirsten!â
panic surged through you, and you shoved him back with far more force than you intended, as if he were suddenly contagious. your cheeks burned hot as your gaze darted toward the observation room. you could feel every beat of your heart hammering against your ribs.
from where you stood, the glass gave an impeccable view of everything that had transpired. your stomach churned as you imagined what she might have seen, what conclusions she might have drawn. but as your eyes landed on the empty chair, your confusion deepened. kirsten wasnât there.
âwhere⊠where did she go?â you stammered, your embarrassment morphing into unease. âwasnât she justâshe was right there!â you pointed toward the glass, your voice climbing an octave.
âjesus, when did you become so strong, pipsqueak?â caleb muttered, his tone equal parts stunned and impressed as he steadied himself. the few inches youâd managed to push him away seemed to amuse him more than anything else, his eyes glinting with an undeniable sense of pride.
âcaleb, kirsten!â you exclaimed, pointing toward the observation room with wide, exasperated eyes. âdid she see us? oh my god, she might think iâm a whore!â
he raised an eyebrow, clearly trying to suppress a laugh. âcâmon, pipsqueak, donât push it,â he said, his voice calm and teasing as he stepped forward. âi bet she understands. we were made for each other, after all.â his tone turned deliberately corny, and you could feel your cheeks burning like they were on fire again.
âdonât say that!â you snapped, mortified, as he tried to close the gap youâd created between you. you quickly put a hand on his chest to stop him, your glare sharp. âdonât touch me, you perv!â
caleb smirked, his amusement only growing at your reaction. âare you seriously worried about an 70-year-old woman judging you right now?â he asked, his tone dripping with disbelief, âafter the life or death situation we just discussed?â
âyou canât keep saying these things to a womanâŠâ you muttered, your voice trailing off as you stubbornly ignored the look caleb was giving you. you kept the distance between you, maintaining the few inches of air.
âthings? what things?â he teased, his tone light and playful, though his eyes held that familiar mischievous glint.
you groaned, feeling the heat creep back up your neck. âlike⊠like youâre going to die for me! you asked for a custom-made uniform for me just like yours, do you know what this looks like for other people? and that thing you said about being on your knees? jesusâŠâ you stammered, your words tangling over each other as your embarrassment grew. âyou shouldnât say those things in moments like this!â
calebâs lips curved into a slow smirk, clearly enjoying how flustered you were. âi want them to look at you and remember who youâre with,â he murmured. âdo you want me to prove it?â
your eyes widened in horror as you saw him begin to shift, his knees bending slightly as though he were actually going to kneel in front of you.
âoh my god, caleb. get up! my god!â you hissed, your hands flying out to stop him before he could make good on his teasing. your gaze darted toward the window and the door, nerves prickling at the thought of someone walking in and witnessing this absurd scene.
caleb, meanwhile, was practically doubled over in laughter, clearly finding your panic far too amusing. âiâll keep that in mind,â he said between chuckles, his tone teasing as ever. âyou donât like things in public, princess. noted.â
âwhat the hell is that supposed to mean?!â you snapped, your voice climbing a few octaves in your exasperation. your hands flew up to cover your face, both to hide your flaming cheeks and to block out the infuriating sight of his grin. âoh my godâŠâ
calebâs laughter only grew louder at your reaction, his shoulders shaking with the force of it. ârelax, pipsqueak,â he said, his voice still laced with amusement. âiâm just saying Iâll keep it private next time.â
next time? sweet heavens.
you glared at him, your cheeks burning hotter than ever. âyou still havenât told me your plan, itâs time we get out of here, they will start getting suspicious,â you said, your voice firm despite the lingering embarrassment.Â
âoh, donât worry, baby. they know theyâre dead if they interrupt usâ.
despite his infuriating smirks and relentless teasing, you couldnât deny the way calebâs presence steadied something deep within youâa part of yourself that had always felt untethered, incomplete. there was a gravity to himâoh the irony of it allâ, an unshakable certainty in his actions, even when everything else around you felt like chaos. the pieces of your past, fragmented and jagged, were beginning to fall into place.Â
as you stared at his grin right now, you asked yourself if it would be the right time to confess your feelings for him since childhood. he knew you loved him, but you still wanted to say those three little words.
you hated how much you didnât want to believe him, but there was no escaping the truth: caleb had always been there, weaving himself into the fabric of your life in ways you hadnât fully understood until now.Â
âi trust you, caleb. with my life.â
the words felt heavier than youâd anticipated, and for a moment, the air between you shifted. you watched as his expression changed, his playful smirk fading into something more serious. his gaze locked onto yours, and you could see the way your confession hit him, sharp and profound, like it was a dangerous weapon in the wrong hands.
but how could you not? how could you not trust the man when just being near him brought a peace that felt almost childlikeâa fleeting memory of safety you hadnât realized youâd lost? when every sacrifice he made screamed of a love so consuming it defied logic, a love that compelled him to climb through military ranks with a single-minded determination, as if his very existence depended on it? he spent his days training, his nights planning, and his rare moments of respite killing parts of himself, carving away his own humanity, all to try and make you feel whole.
your life had been in his hands from the very beginning, cradled by the will of a man whose obsession burned brighter than any protocore, whose evol bent not to power but to the unrelenting need to love you.
calebâs love was a force of nature, raw and unyielding, and even if it frightened you, even if it left you reeling, you couldnât deny the truth of it: it was the only constant in a world that had always sought to tear you apart.
calebâs love made you shiver. and for some reason, you didnât mind that at the moment.
âme and kirsten already have a plan,â he said finally, his voice quieter but laced with determination, glancing at the watch displayed in the hologram behind you. âiâll tell you everything when weâre completely alone. i promise.â
honestly? right now you just wanted to kiss the man in front of you stupid and spill all your love on him. the love you have felt since your first time playing kitty cards with him and kissing each otherâs cheeks as kids.
but you were quickly reminded of where you were when you glanced at the door and stared at the daa emblem painted on it. you felt like a wreck of emotions.
the change in scenery left you gasping for air as caleb slowly guided you out of the conference room. the ever personnel not even blinking as you and the colonel passed through them.
your eyes darted around, searching for something familiar, something real to ground you amidst the mess of revelations swimming in your mind. part of you hoped to see kirsten, her sharp eyes and scary aura a strange kind of reassurance in the chaos. but when the grey-haired woman was nowhere to be seen, a small, unexpected wave of relief washed over you.
maybe it was better this way. maybe you werenât ready to face her yetânot after everything caleb had told you, not when the weight of your own memories, or lack thereof, felt like an anchor dragging you down.
you stared at linkon city sprawling below skyhaven, the glittering lights painting an intricate mosaic against the inky darkness of dawn. from the observation decks you walked over, the city looked almost surreal, a world that felt both achingly familiar and impossibly distant. something tugged at your chestâa dull ache of nostalgiaâat the thought of your childhood home hidden somewhere within those shimmering lights.
the tech center that skyhaven was, with its seamless blend of towering glass structures and advanced machinery humming quietly around you, filled you with a strange sense of innocence. as though everything youâd endured until this day could be set aside as a different life of yours.
wasnât this exactly what the core inside of you was? so powerful it could transcend planets, weaving its influence across time and spaceâcapable of creating not just miracles but catastrophes?
weren't you a walking human weapon? haven't you always been one?
your thoughts were interrupted by caleb gesturing toward his room, his tone calm as he said heâd finish up and spend the rest of the day with you. you barely registered the words, too lost in the whirlwind of your mind to notice how the two of you had already made your way back to his quarters.
just as he turned to leave, you reached out, grabbing his hand instinctively. the touch froze him in place, his eyes immediately locking onto yours in his chambers. you wanted to say something, anything, but the words caught in your throat. would it sound strange to admit you didnât want to be alone? to confess that you were scared?
caleb stepped closer, his presence grounding you like a warm tether against the cold, sterile hallway outside his room. âyouâve been thinking about it, havenât you?â he asked, his voice quiet, gentle. it wasnât a question so much as an acknowledgment of the weight you carried. he grabbed your hand on his.
you nodded, your grip tightening slightly on his hand. âitâs just⊠too much,â you admitted, your voice trembling. âto think something so smallâsomething inside meâhas the power to destroy so much. reshape worlds. ruin lives. it fucking terrifies me, caleb.â
he didnât answer right away, but his silence felt steady, unhurried. his thumb brushed lightly against the back of your hand, a simple gesture, but one that somehow made it easier to breathe.
âlisten to me,â he said, his voice low, steady. âyouâre allowed to be scared. no oneâs asking you to shoulder this alone. not me, not anyone.â
you nodded, your throat tight with emotion, as he squeezed your hand gently. âiâll just go fix some things, and iâll be right back, okay? iâm not leaving you alone anymore.â
his words struck something deep within you, a vulnerability youâd tried so hard to keep buried. you blinked rapidly, trying to hold back the tears threatening to spill, wondering why you were so emotional today.
âpromise me,â you said, your voice barely above a whisper. was it selfish? probably. but at this point, you didnât care. caleb cared about youâloved you, evenâand you were done pretending you didnât need him.
his lips curved into a soft smile, one that held more warmth than his usual teasing grins. he leaned in slightly, his gaze steady and full of affection. âi promise,â he said, the words carrying a weight that made your heart stutter.
you watched his back turn to you after he left another kiss on your forehead, the warmth of it lingering long after he stepped away.Â
maybe the betrayal would fade someday, its sharp edges dulled by time and the quiet moments like this that he gifted you. or maybe it wouldnât. maybe the wound would remain, a reminder of everything he had done to youâand for you.
but even now, as you stood there watching him walk away, you couldnât deny the part of yourself that clung to what he had done. the part of you that loved him for it, no matter how much you tried to resist.
after all, you were his since the beginning.
author's notes: tell me i didn't ruin this halfway bc that is what i felt when i was finishing it. next chapter they will be doing the woompakoompa so buckle up (i just hope it doesn't turn into a 20k words smut scene) lord help me. i'll cry if nobody comments below because my week's sanity was poured into this work. just kidding (i'm not), i love you freaky caleb girlies, see you next time, xo.

radioheadâs complicity in israeli-occupied palestine
my feelings on radiohead are complicated these days, as iâm sure they are for many. i'm using this post as a method of sorting out my own thoughts & to provide sources.
for me, the bottom line is this: radiohead is both a brand & a musical group. the brand of radiohead has always had deep roots in the israeli colonial project - they have played many, many shows there throughout their career. their breakout single - creep, was intially only a hit in israel (x, x) & the personal choices of some of radiohead's members remain just as involved. jonny greenwood met his future wife - the israeli artist, antivaxxer & vehement zionist (x) sharona katan - at a show radiohead played in israel in 1993 (x). jonny consistently collaborated with zionist musician shye ben tzur & his projects continue to tour in tel aviv as recently as last september. as for jonny himself - his only statement in regards to the war on gaza has been in mourning for the israeli concert goers on october 10th - w no such empathy spared to the 100,000 palestinians dead, injured, or missing. as for thom, while heâs thrown a few bitchfits (x) through the years abt criticism of radioheadâs shows in israel, he has imo - only paid lipservice to the criticism, saying âplaying in a country isnât the same as endorsing its governmentâ going against the pleas of his peers & coworkers in the music industry. as well as the pro-palestine activism undertaken by his long term friend micheal stipe (x & x). (note: stipe stood by radioheadâs performance in israel in 2017, but his current political choices suggest his understanding of the situation has evolved). even his own son - noah yorke, a fellow working musician, has voiced his opposition to the genocide in gaza via instagram stories. as for the other members, rhythm guitarist ed o'brien has called for a ceasefire, as well as making a few tweets about "solidarity with palestinians & israeli peacemakers". while bassist colin greenwood reportedly refused to accept letters of dialogue from the fan-run organization radiohead fans for palestine. drummer phillip selway's commentary is similarly brief but defensive, saying radiohead's 2017 tel aviv concert "felt right"
to me, this paints a picture of a band who's members stances on israel range from abhorrent to simply not enough. & as a brand, their particular combination of action & inaction amounts to a fundamentally zionist perspective. you cannot separate radiohead as artists from radiohead as a brand name.
i've loved radiohead since i was 14. i was brought into it by another longtime fan. i cried & danced when i saw them live back in 2017 - it was, & remains, a moment that allowed me to live through the hardest parts of my life. i felt for the longest time, that radiohead's music & political positions encouraged my empathy - my questioning of conservative political authority. & while all celebrities are failures in some sense - it is still heartbreaking to know how wrong i was.
i don't think it's possible to disconnect the decade of connection & love i have for their music - I won't ask that of myself or anyone else. & the idea of scrubbing one's taste of the "morally impure" is useless effort & an inappropriate simplification of both art & our conceptions of what makes someone "bad". but i can say with certainty - i will not be giving them any more of my money, whether that be streaming their music or buying their merch - & i encourage you to do the same. silence is complicity - this is beyond silence.
in the words of nina simone - "an artist's duty, as far as i'm concerned, is to reflect the times. how can you be an artist and not reflect the times? that to me is the definition of an artist."

The Nested Universes Theory
and the high chance of a very literal bitter/sweet endingâŠ
Yes, Will and Mike will end up together, but their ending may be both happy and tragic simultaneously.
(This theory may explain why the cast and Netflix executives were crying heavily when informed of the showâs endingâŠ)
I'm warning you guys, take care of yourself while reading this. This isn't an easy read.
CW: CSA, sex, drugs, HIV/AIDS, period typical homophobia, death
Framed Narratives/Stories
Framed narratives are basically a story within a story. Common examples of this are the movie âThe Princess Brideâ and âTitanicâ. Both stories have the story of the narrator and the story within.
Another example is Stranger Things itself. When we see the boys playing Dungeons and Dragons, they are creating a story within a story.
Sometimes, framed narratives are nested, meaning multiple layers of storytelling. An example of this would be the movie âInceptionâ. In that movie there are dreams within dreams within dreams⊠Itâs a complex but fascinating way to tell stories.
Now, I do think Stranger Things is also a nested narrative story. Meaning, there may be a layer of a story that hasnât been revealed to us yet (or more than one).
Basically Iâm saying: the show itself may be a story created by some of the characters.
Iâm guessing two characters in particular. Which two characters? The two most associated with creating stories. The writer and artist. Two of the characters that have existed since the showâs inception.
Mike and Will.
Multiple Universes
I do think there are multiple timelines/universes within Stranger Things⊠but itâs not exactly what you think. Itâs not parallel universes/timelines. They do not exist parallel to each other, they exist within each other.
This is the reason for the âmemory within a memoryâ, âplay within a playâ references.
Itâs a story within a story within a story.
While Mike and Will are creating their DnD campaigns, there is another version of Mike and Will creating the story we see within the show.
Letâs break it down:
Inner layer: Mike and Willâs characters existing within a DnD campaign
Middle layer: Mike and Will within the show creating the DnD campaign
Outer layer: Mike and Will creating the story of the show
Mike and Willâs story within the frame (the outer layer) likely does share a lot in common with the story within the show, with one major difference:
Thereâs no Upside Down, and no supernatural elements. No superpowers, and no superheroes. There are still monster(s) and heroes, but these monsters and heroes are real.
Living on as âHeroesâ

Ever notice the association between characters being referred to as âa heroâ after facing their demise?
We have seen this time and time again. Itâs not a coincidence, itâs a pattern.
Love for horror and escapism

@threemanoperation has a great post on Willâs love for horror.
It makes perfect sense for a boy like Will to enjoy horror. It can be a great way to process trauma and grief.
We also know even from the earliest descriptions for Mike and Willâs characters that they both love to âescapeâ into fantasy. They do this together, through DnD.
Gods/Puppet Masters/Creators
Within the show, there are many subtle nods to Will and Mike somehow controlling/manipulating things. These hints have lead to many interesting theories about Mike and/or Will having powers. In a sense, they both are absolutely right! But if this theory is correct, their influence over the show is mainly due to them creating it. Theyâre the authors, so in a way, theyâre both âGodsâ.
Solving the âLetter to Willyâ/Lettergate puzzle
"Letter to Willy" is a song that plays over three different scenes within ST4. Each scene involves regrets, and survivor's guilt.
Max mourns Billy and reads out her letter "before it's too late" aka before she dies too.
Mike and Will have a heart-to-heart and Mike expresses guilt over El leaving, thinking there was more he could have done. This occurs while they are burying a dead man's body.
Dustin tells Eddie's uncle that Eddie died a hero, despite what the town thought.
This all leads back to Mike and Will within the story's outer layer. This also connects with the writer's incomplete letter they posted years ago on Twitter. I'll get back to this.
A father infecting his child
Oh boy. I hate this part but it requires context soâŠ
Hopper admits to indirectly causing the death of his daughter, Sarah. He had been exposed to Agent Orange which led to his daughter developing cancer at a young age. He has remorse and has been grieving Sarah this whole time.
Now, Hopper is a decent guy and father, and is written as an almost âfix itâ version of Mike and Willâs own fathers. He isnât perfect, but heâs a man who strives to grow and improve himself.
Papa, is not a decent guy, and we also see him injecting El and Henry with needles.
So, what Iâm saying is that this may be a hint to what happened to Will (in the 99/100 timeline). Lonnie is hinted to be a drug user, and it wouldnât be far fetched to say he may have used IV drugs. Exposure to IV drugs is a way to transmit diseases, as blood may be exchanged through contaminated needles. Also, Lonnie has been hinted at, through subtext, to be a horrible monster. (<- click that link for a post about him.)
The â1/100â Timeline

The show itself is the 1 out of 100 timeline. It is the only one where Will was not kidnapped by his parent/guardian (Lonnie).
This means, it is the one where none of the tragic stuff ever happened, specifically to Will and Mikeâs story at least. They may encounter challenges, but nothing they cannot overcome together, as a team.
1983: The Demogorgon got Will. He survives the horrors done to him in the Upside Down⊠but barely. He is taken to the hospital and heals from it all, including flu-like symptoms (cough, nausea/vomiting).
1984: Will suffers from flashbacks. He is also plagued with the nickname âZombie Boyâ and suffering from the Mind Flayerâs possession of him. But with the love of his family, and Mike, is able to return back to his reality.
1985: He then begins to struggle with the pressures of growing up, and having to move away. Plus the Mind Flayer returns and reeks more havoc.
1986: He then moves to a pleasant place. Where things are sunny and warm. Things on the surface seem happy and ânormalâ but thereâs a looming threat hidden beneath the surface. Henry/1/Vecna. This opportunistic threat preys on the weak and begins to take over Hawkins.
1987-1989: Will is back in Hawkins and his ties to the Upside Down increase. He canât shake it off as easily as before. He also canât shake off his love for Mike, who grows even closer to him. One thing leads to another and they become lovers (they have sex). They eventually are able to stop the contamination of Hawkins, and save everyone. Will also realizes that he has developed superpowers from his time in the Upside Down, through his blood. Mike also develops superpowers, given to him by Will.
Okay⊠you might understand where Iâm going with this but I still must warn you before reading the next part. Itâs devastatingly tragic.
The â99/100â Timeline
(Iâm probably wrong on some of these details but this is what I theorize thus far):
1983: Lonnie âgotâ Will (CSA). Will survives the horrors done to him by his father⊠but barely. He is taken to the hospital and heals from it all and from flu-like symptoms (cough, nausea/vomiting).
1984: Will suffers from flashbacks. He is also plagued with the nickname âZombie Boyâ and suffering from the flashbacks of his fatherâs possession of him. But with the love of his family, and Mike, is able to return back to reality.
1985: He then begins to struggle with the pressures of growing up. Plus the memories of Lonnie return and reek more havoc.
1986: Things on the surface seem happy and ânormalâ but thereâs a looming threat hidden beneath the surface. HIV -> AIDS. Opportunistic infections slowly begin to prey on Will.
1987-?: Will canât shake off colds and infections as easily as before. He also canât shake off his love for Mike, who grows even closer to him. One thing leads to another and they become lovers (they have sex). Will soon discovers he has HIV/AIDS, which he had transmitted to Mike. Devastated by the news, they do everything they can to fight it together. They cope through creating a DnD campaign together to process everything theyâve gone through. They play DnD in Mikeâs basement until Willâs condition becomes critical. Will is forced to stay in the hospital, while Mike is unable to visit (strict rules about visitation due to the disease and because they arenât/cannot be considered legal partners). So, Mike does the only thing he can do: he writes letters to Will and continues the story. Mike eventually loses Will, for real this time. Heâs devastated, and plagued with grief, depression, and survivorâs guilt. He didnât complete their story in time. But his family and friends support him and encourage him to finish the story. To change the ending before his time runs out too. He completes their story himself, and reads his final letter to Willâs grave.

âanyway I think youâll like [the ending]. sorry I couldnât get it done [on time] but you mean so [much to me] and itâs been [so hard being without you] hope this is [enough to] last until [we meet again]. Love, [Mike].â
Attached to this letter is the full campaign. The full story of the show itself, which started on November 6th, 1983. He successfully turned back the clock, and changed their ending. They became superheroes within their story, saving Hawkins with their love. Mike dies soon after and we are met withâŠ
Mike and Will reuniting within their own story. Blue meeting yellow at a gate, one final time, that leads âinto the westâ.
They continue their story and itâs a never ending story⊠Living on as heroes, forever and ever.
Some thoughts:
To simplify things, I didnât include other characters much here but they likely all play an important role in the story. Many characters likely only exist within the mid layer (the 1/100 timeline).
I do think their story likely will be published, and this will be done by another character (my guess is Lucas). Their story will impact others profoundly, perhaps completely altering perspectives. This will lead towards positive change, and increase pressure for the development of a âcureâ.
Lonnie obviously dies too, but we wonât see it. Heâs significant but irrelevant. We donât need to see him. Perhaps he rots in jail.
If characters like Nancy, Jonathan, Joyce, and Hopper all exist within the outer layer (the 99/100 timeline) in a similar way, they too may be inflicted with HIV/AIDS. Remember, it wasnât just gay men, everyone was affected by this awful epidemic.
The time period is super relevant in this story. Thereâs no way that HIV/AIDS will not play an important role. Think about it⊠it revolves around two gay boys growing up during that time. This epidemic was widespread and terrifying. Had they been born a decade later, there would have been treatments/âcuresâ accessible to them.
The biggest reason why I strongly believe this theory is because⊠this is basically the ending of Stranger Things season 1, on a much grander scale. Think about it. Mike changed the ending of the DnD campaign so Will could be a hero, not a victim. This was further established in the comics.
While Mike and Will within the outer layer (99/100) have a tragic ending, Mike and Will within the show (1/100) do not. They beat the odds. Although it is undeniably a tragic end, remember that somewhere out there Mike and Will are still playing DnD and Nintendo for the rest of their lives.
Free Will and Writing your Own Ending

Free will has always been a reoccurring theme within Stranger Things; meaning we can choose our own destiny, fight chance, and beat the odds.
Do we truly have free will though? Obviously, we donât know. The point is, we should still live life as if we do have it. To take control where we can, and not let external forces dictate who we are and what our destiny is. I think thatâs the message there.

hi guys, i am kind of ashamed and embarrassed to have to do this, but i figured it can't hurt to ask. basically i am really struggling right now (i know a lot of us are). i need financial help, so i set up a ko-fi page â
any kind of help would be so appreciated and i am so grateful for anyone taking the time to read this little post.
long story short: because of situations completely out of my control, i lost my job in vfx after almost 8 years and i am now forced to switch careers. i'm going back to school and can't find a part time job even tho i have been working non stop for 15 years. financial aid will only cover my rent, so i absolutely need to work 20 to 30 hours a week to cover the rest of my living expenses, but it's really hard to find a job. i am also currently over 10k cad in debt from my film school loans and credit cards.
signal boost would be appreciated, if you can đ
my situation in more details under the cut for those who are curious
i was working in the vfx industry as a 2D compositor since 2016 (i have worked on over 40 films and tv shows), but in december of 2023 i lost my job due to the hollywood strikes (as expected, and as it shouldâi fully support the strikes). this was supposed to be temporary for a couple months where i could get unemployment benefits (only 45% of my usual salary though). unfortunately, on may 31st 2024, my government announced that they are significantly cutting the funding & tax credits for the vfx industry where i live. what does this mean? mass lay offs. thousands of canadians and other people in the world working in the industry are losing their career, including me. there will only be about 20% vfx jobs left where i live by 2025. vfx shops and production houses have already started to close doors here. i'm still mourning this career i have been working in for 8 years and loved, even tho it's been difficult and demanding at times (lots of overtime), but there are just no jobs right now (unless you are a senior vfx artist with decades of experience) and the future will only get more bleak. i could move abroad and follow the industry that is already moving somewhere else, but i don't want to do that on my own (i am already super lonely as it is!!) and i can't afford it.
my unemployment benefits will run out by the last week of september. in 4 weeks. i've been sending resumes everywhere, both online and in person, but i am just not getting anything in return. even tho i have over 15 years of experience working in various jobs and i have never been fired from anywhere. even tho my resume and cover letters are solid because they have been approved my professional counselors (a free service for people under 35 where i live). so much for they're hiring everywhere...
since my vfx compositing skills are very niche and not really applicable to much else, i decided to go back to school, taking college classes in the admin and excecutive assistant fields, since it's something that i think would be good for me and there are lots of jobs for that here. i will be getting some financial aid, but it's nowhere near enough to survive. it will only cover my rent, and that's because my rent is super cheap for my city. my college classes start on september 30 and i am excited for it, but also very stressed because i still don't have a part time job.
i've been living on my own with a small salary for over 10 years now, but it truly is the first time that i'm struggling this hard. i honestly don't have anything worth selling except some taylor swift perfumes, which i sold this week. i also have over 6k of credit debt and another 4.5k of school loans left to pay. at the bare minimum i will need about $1.000 CAD/month to cover my other bills and expenses after rent, hence why the need for a job ASAP. i am desperate and my mental health has been a huge mess. this is why i decided to open my ko-fi accounts. not that i'm expecting much, but anything can help, i think.
i don't have much to offer in exchange, except gifs? i'm wondering if (cheap, low price) gif commissions are a thing? i have no idea know, but i set up a poll on my ko-fi page to see if anyone would be interested.
thank you for reading if you've made it here, it's appreciated đ

(Posting my threads on tumblr so I can talk to fellow Akane/Rankane enjoyers, part 3) (manga exclusive, I haven't seen the 80s anime)
One of the first things we learn about Akane is that sheâs both violent and sweet. Both are true, and much can be said about her hair journey.
Akaneâs violent side is immediately obvious while her sweet side is more apparent along the journey. Sheâs trusting and caring, even with people who have done nothing but wrong her (a mf will try to kill her and sheâll still be like âI feel sorry for them/I want to help themâ)
Her sweet side is also introduced when she meets Ranma. She sees someone uncomfortable in an uncertain/awkward situation, and sheâs the first to reach out and be welcoming.
Akaneâs haircut is violent, brutal, and shocking. As shocking as Ranma entering her world. It happens during the first real fight Ranma has on page, and it's likely no coincidence. Something is off with long-haired Akane... with the cut, she enters Ranmaâs world as her true self.
Akaneâs long hair is tied to Akane trying to be like Kasumi: modest, calm, quiet. Itâs Akane trying to be someone sheâs not, because she wants to feel loved and wanted. If she likes a boy, she wants to be liked back (as opposed to disliked because sheâs too "boyish")
When Akane crushes on the doc, thatâs a girl used to being bothered and harassed by boys (boys who think âI can beat her into dating meâ) fixating on a safe male figure because he makes her feel secure and cared for (literally treating her wounds)
(To contrast: Ranma being stronger isnât âshe must submit to me,â which is what was associated with a boy beating her... it's usually âIâm stronger so I want to look out for her/help her/protect herâ and that part makes her feel secure and cared for)
Akane âchanging herselfâ isnât really about getting the doc to like her, but about Akane feeling judged and inadequate as her true "tomboy self," because even if she cuts her hair short she still likes being feminine⊠and sheâs constantly told sheâs not.
Just look at how she dresses. Other female characters might often wear pants (outside of the school uniform, Nabiki usually wears jeans and shorts for example) but Akane is rarely not wearing a cute little skirt or a dress. Calling her uncute pokes at a sore spot.
Changing herself doesnât give her what she wants, it just reaffirms her insecurity (if you have to stop being yourself to feel accepted, are you really accepted?). When the doc says "short hair always did suit you better," it doesnât make her happy because she doesnât actually want him.
Part of why heâs safe is because he knows her just as she is and still never judges when others do. âShort hair always did suit you better" is also âyou didnât need to change yourself to be accepted, you were always fine just as you are.â
This is part of why she cries so hard and why afterward sheâs immediately over him⊠she mourns what she felt and believed (and perhaps the effort it took, growing out a pixie is not for the weak lol) and is ready to turn the page. But the insecurity that sparked it all remains.
That Ranma preferring her short hair makes her smile is an early sign that he stirs something in her. It also says something important: he can tease and insult her all he wants, but he likes Akane just as she is
And that includes her violence. her anger and her fire. When Akane is upset and tries a cooler approach, Ranma wonât let her. he prefers Akane sending his ass flying than her ignoring him 100%
I think Ranma also likes Akaneâs "specific brand" of violence, because everyone and their mom is violent here (including Nabiki⊠psychological violence if you will lol) and outside of challenges/battles he only seeks hers by teasing her, knowing how sheâs going to react.
(everyone is a martial artist/violent but I think part of why Akane is clocked as more tomboy-ish is attitude. All the girls will use âtheir feminine charms,â even Ranma, but Akane will grab a fucker by the shirt, look at them in the eye and jut out her chin, and that's "masculine")
Akane wants to feel normal, she wants to be liked by the one she likes. she associates âyouâre not normalâ as a negative thing, as âyou will be dislikedâ... even if Ranma means it as âAkane is tougher than a regular girlâ (positive) that's not what she hears.
Kasumi means no harm, she knows Akane well and wants to look out for her. but that gives her words more impact, and Akane looks up to her as the ideal of femininity (she also only wears skirts and dresses) (Akane has likely heard this shit a lot too, she was cast as Romeo, etc)
Ranma knows he can be a jerk, but he genuinely doesnât realize he's saying insensitive shit just when Akane is at her most sensitive... when she snaps, thatâs her armor coming up to protect her heart (just like being a jerk can be armor for Ranma)
So Ranma hurts Akane's feelings without realizing (being a jerk is armor because his feelings are too big, too much for him, and heâs not ready to deal with them) but takes Akane's angry response as her hurting his feelings.
This causes the following pattern: Ranma âlifts Akane up,â telling her exactly what she needs to hear from him, soothing her insecurities⊠and then completely lets her down/disappoints her by telling her exactly what she doesnât need to hear.
Look at Akaneâs face. she couldâve accepted Ranma's apology and moved on. Instead, sheâs vulnerable and ready to admit fault too... sheâs touched by the idea of Ranma wanting to make up because he wants to be with her (but then he downplays it lol a word-class fumbler fr)
And... he doesn't realize heâs doing this! he doesnât want to hurt her. whenever he realizes he hurt her he always wants to fix it, even if he doesnât fully get what he did wrong or why Akane is mad and/or how to make it better.
But âlifting Akane up and then kicking her downâ is the type of shit that makes Akane feel like she needs to protect her heart. In a way, Ranmaâs armor (jerk) makes Akaneâs come up and vice-versa, so neither can give in. It's part of why admitting feelings is very difficult
Thereâs also Ranma throwing easy âI love youâsâ when he thinks it's a challenge with people he has no feelings for, but completely combusts when he realizes he said to the person heâs in love with. Itâs too much for him and heâs not ready to admit it, so âhe takes it backâ
On Akane's side, she isn't unaffected by hearing the boy she loves confess and then "take it back"... even if she can be perceptive and understands Ranmaâs shenanigans this sparks more insecurity (and then jealousy)
This contributes to Akane being quick to get angry & misunderstand certain situations, as sheâs expecting Ranma to âlet her downâ/ has no confidence that he doesnât want anyone else (besides Ranma being in âimpossible not to misunderstand situations, for the bitâ)
Akane being perceptive but her insecurities getting to her: she knows Ranma. Sheâs correct in her assessment that he fucked up and is hiding it. But doesnât clock his deflection because damn, what if he actually wants someone else, what if they have something she doesnât
But Akane always goes back to believing in him. Because even if he disappoints her, she understands that he's just not thinking, it's his ego, he doesn't mean it, the situation is too much for him to handle etc. And he never stops trying to make sure theyâre on good terms.
Also, Ranma makes her feel safe and protected. She likes that heâs strong and never gives up. She knows she can count on him when it matters most (which is why sheâs also his ride or die, goes both ways). Itâs part of why when sheâs jealous, she imagines Ranma protecting Nabiki.
Itâs not something she thinks about consciously, but being the one Ranma wants to protect above everyone and all else is part of how Ranma shows his feelings for her, and on some level, she can tell⊠one of the first moments ranma makes her heart speed up is this
She likes that Ranma protects her and that she can count on him, but she never wants to be a burden or the reason he has to sacrifice something. just like how Ranma wants to protect her above all else, no one goes as far as she does for his sake (see also: the final arc)
Adding on the crush on the doc: just like this scene, it's likely that whenever Akane went to see him, her wounds weren't just physical. "I hate boys" is not something she means as she never treats anyone with hatred, but it's coming from a place of frustration/exhaustion.
Each daily challenge would be annoying by itself, but the repetitiveness of it all would wear her down. Note how she never goes "I hate boys" again after it stops. It's only just "I hate Ranma, specifically" because he hurt her... but she doesn't mean that either
Ranma's presence puts an end to those challenges, so he brings her peace in that sense. His world comes with craziness and dangers, but unlike the school challenges, this is something Akane chooses to face because she wants to support him.
Fighting annoying boys because you don't want to date them and fighting to support a loved one are completely different things. The former wears Akane down, while she's passionate about the latter. Just like how she counts on Ranma to protect her, she always wants to have his back.

I love YINGDU as it is
I don't think I'll read these interviews everyone is talking about :/ I thought hard about it, I've read the general points of it, but I don't think reading them will make me enjoy YINGDU more. Quite the opposite actually.

Me: thank you but no thank you. Later maybe. Love you, still.
I don't understand why they had to get interviewed to clear things up. By why, I mean, this situation is fucked up and I don't get how things got like this in this industry.
First. Can't the fans just wait and see? We're grownups, stop treating us like children who cried to get a lollipop. We'll still be here next year. Trust your fanbase.
Second... in what kind of world were the animators under pressure to the point they created plot holes and new timelines by accident? I'm extrapolating but, for real, how fucked up is it that they decided to rush a show that popular for the sake of airing it early? I'm sorry, was the money we spend on merch every few weeks not enough? I'm just mad at the production, honestly. Because they made a big mistake.
They're rushing in like bulls in a china shop. The character PVs were a mistake as well. They should have been released after YINGDU, to manage our expectations on characters that were yet to be introduced. I used to think it was an actual teaser, a window on how Lu Guang saw them or what they will become because of Lu Guang's meddling with the timeline. Now, I'm starting to think they needed strong marketing to get people's attention.
The whole thing makes my viewer experience less than optimal. So I'll keep writing meta but I won't take these interviews into account. đ§©Meta is for funđ§©, mere interpretation, only fanon, and that's okay. Meta is gamble. Meta is character study and theories on plot twists.
âšAnd that's okayâš
We're not suppose to write season 3 in advance. So it makes sense to me to keep having fun on what the show and the official content bring us. But as far as I'm concerned, the interviews didn't happen. It's not denial, just-
When I was studying cinema in university, my teacher once told me a very harsh truth: if you have to explain the sequence you filmed, then you didn't film it right. Sadly, in this context, production limitations were at fault but the lasting impression is the same.
Do you realize how insane it is that a creative team has to spell their work out to their fans? How humiliating it must be? There's revealing easter egg, teasing next season, spilling spoilers on accident, and then there is whatever that was. I feel for the creators and animators who worked themselves to exhaustion to bring something as beautiful as YINGDU to life. Because this season? It isn't perfect and it's inconsistent and different but no one can call it ugly. I would lick my screen because the image does look tasty lmao. My heart bleeds for all the people involved in this season.

Meta is trying to understand and noticing easter eggs, honouring the writers and animators' work X
Of course, that's only my stand on the topic. I might take different directions in my interpretation than others, that's all. Aaaaaand? Yes. That's okay đ„°
As an artist myself, I feel like the situation is kind of disappointing for the people who worked on YINGDU. That's why I'll take the canon as it is. I don't want to mourn what could be or should have been. I want to enjoy what is.

Meta is diving in the depth of symbolism X
As a fan, I get that we're happy with every nugget of information on what's coming next. The lore in Link Click is still blurry and while I honestly want to believe it is an artistic choice and will stay under control, I can't help but fear it's the result of bad writing. But. What if it is? Meh, I'm still here, enjoying myself. Because I love this show as it is, I see the flaws and the beauty in it. I'll be there.

Meta is love and each of us expresses it differently X

Hi Gina! I donât remember if Iâve already written to you about this or if it was somewhere else, but still. Regarding the â1D at the Britsâ rumour - Iâm about 95% confident that no such thing will happen and, moreover, that it could be a rumour leaked by the award show itself.
First of all, the timing. It appeared just after the tickets went on sale, but before the final nominations announcement. Within 24 hours it was a complete sold out - I know because I monitored them closely lol. The Brits do usually sell out, but definitely not as fast, not even (from what I could gather) in 2023 when Harry was expected to be nominated.
Second, the nature. The initial rumour was very firm that it would be a musical performance by 1D, but later repeats state that itâs still in the works, and more likely a video, and not even certainly featuring the boys. Alrighty.
Third, the motivation. Brits have had a steadily declining viewership for a good decade, with a notable peak in 2023 (I wonder why đ). The nominations this year are not so banging, there is much overlap with last year, but after rumours like these about either a reunion or Harryâs comeback, the viewership may climb a good bit. Any speculation works, and if itâs not Taylor Swift attending (which is a point of discussion before any major award show lol, regardless of her nomination status or relevance to it), then itâs a 1D reunion.
Fourth, the patterns. Blame my steel trap brain that fights against low attention spans, but how different is it from Harry at Fire Aid? Or Harry at Glasto, or Harry literally anywhere, or the reunion rumours that appeared after Liamâs passing? Especially the last ones: first they also had people say (even on your blog!) that âeverything was ready and about to be announcedâ (an over-emotional acquaintance of mine was even saying that âsomeone told her that someone found the rent contracts with Wembley and the marketing plansâ, yeah sure). And then it was âoh theyâre thinking about something nowâ. And then it was nothing. So rumours come and go, and if they donât come true, theyâre instantly forgotten. But I remember, and by now I really donât believe anything.
Finally, the boys. From what weâve seen of them over the past months, and especially from how Liamâs funeral was organised with an explicit intention to prevent a picture of the four of them with a âreunionâ headline, I think theyâre nowhere near being ready to withstand that, definitely not on an actual stage. And if any of my suspicions are true, itâs honestly abhorrent to think that their grief (and also in part ours, as a fandom) is being used as a marketing instrument, and that an act of mourning and remembrance for a lost brother can be labelled as a reunion.
And honestly, many rumours (not only these about 1D at the Brits, but also about Harry and occasionally about others artists as well) feel like they aim to build up the speculation in the media and in the public sphere and to force the artistâs hand through it. A self-fulfilling prophecy of sorts. But thatâs probably a discussion for another time.
I could kiss you. You have summed up very eloquently whatâs been running around in my brain about this, too. And @apparentlybychance was literally saying the same thing about tickets sales this morning.
Iâm super skeptical anything will happen. Iâm super skeptical of my supposed insider anon (who, if youâre real and you actually want us to know something, come off anon and give me something to believe).
If anything, maybe they individually taped something if thereâs some sort of video tribute. Because honestly, if they show up, itâs going to take the focus off of Liam. We could be wrong, but Iâm not expecting them to be there.

Words from a Shawol to Arohas,
I know how youâre feeling. You donât feel like itâs real, it canât be true, youâre reading articles and watching videos about any possible updates. But itâs true and you feel like the ground opened up to swallow you. The unthinkable has happened, and unfortunately it happened to your beloved Moonbin.
I am not too familiar with Astro or Moonbin, but my heart is with you, and I know your pain. I thought I would give you some advice on how to get through this difficult situation.
This is all meant with love.
1, try not to watch videos with clickbait titles about him. There will be, and already is a lot out there trying to capitalize on this news, only take information from reputable sources.
2, the clickbait videos never really end. They use your dear idol to get views by saying rude things or making infuriating thumbnails. Try your best to ignore it and report the video and the account.
3, donât feel bad if you canât bring yourself to watch any funeral footage if there is any. It will be painful to witness, and you donât have to put yourself through that.
4, itâs okay not to want to listen to his music for a while. Take your time and be kind with yourself.
5, find a way to remember him, if you feel itâs appropriate. For me, Jonghyunâs music saved me in a hard time in my life and I plan to get a tattoo in his honor, but I have also named my cat after his last album, Poet|Artist (we call him Poe), and every new years day I listen to a special song of his to welcome the new year.
6, find fellow Arohas to talk to. They need you as much as you need them.
7, when you feel like you can handle it, find joy in the moments Moonbin left for you. Like dance practice bloopers, photos of him smiling.. remember him on the anniversary if his last day, but celebrate him on his birthday.
8, finally, reach out for help if you feel you need it. It may seem silly to mourn someone you never met, but itâs still a very real loss with very real pain.
I hope this advice can help you find a little peace. I am so sorry for your loss.
-A Shawol

Reaching for a Phantasm
This fic is based on the wonderful art of @astravis! Go check it out!
It's been a blast working on this years ecto-implosion and I was lucky to be paired with such a talented and nice artist!!
Words: 5,201 Can be read on AO3!
Valerie knew that ghosts were evil. She also knew that Danny was not. So when she saw him use ghostly powers she realized that he must not yet know that he's dead and that as long as she could keep the truth from him she wouldn't have to hunt him down. She just wished that someone had told her how hard it was to mourn someone who was still there.
----
Danny felt the back of his head collide with the wall as he slammed into the side of the school gym, hard enough to make his ears ring and for his eyesight to cut out for a split second. The building groaned with him as he pulled himself out of the hole he'd made. around him and as Danny pulled himself out of the divot heâd made he could see cracks spreading out all around him.
Vlad laughed as he lobbed another volley of ectoblasts at him and Danny dove out of the way at the last second with a curse and a burst of energy he didnât really have. The blasts slammed into the building, sending cracks racing across the whole front.Â
As Danny ducked around the shots he hung onto his transformation by the skin of his teeth, thankful that their drawn-out and violent fight had at least cleared out all possible spectators. Less people to see him ifâstrike that, considering his luck it was only a question of whenâhe lost control of his transformation.
âWhy do you always have to stick your nose in my business?!â Vlad growled with a couple more shots to emphasize his point.
âThatâs rich coming from you, you fruitloop!â Danny said as he attempted to eke out a bit of ghostly power to raise a shield, only able to produce a faint flicker of green in the air before one of the blasts slammed through it and grazed his left thigh. âFuck!â Danny swore at both the pain and the realization that his battery really was empty. He needed to get away. âJustâCan you stop trying to mess with people for a damned minute?!â
âThereâs nothing you can do to stop me,â Vlad laughed. âIâm going to get the support of the Residents' Association and get them to ban you Fentons from all the townâs stores!â
Danny gritted his teeth, tired of Vlad making his life harder at every turn. âItâs not real support if you force them through possession!â He threw a desperate ectoblast back at Vlad, cursing the fact that heâd been up since before dawn fighting ghost after ghost for days by this point.
Which was most likely all Vlad's fault too.
âYouâre too young to get involved in politics, little badger!â Vlad snarled and hurled electricity right at him. Danny yelped and dove out of the way a split second too late. The shot clipped him in the shoulder, sending him spinning to the ground as his transformation suddenly slipped from his grip.
He came crashing down as a human, striking the ground hard and thanking his increased durability.
Vlad landed in front of him as Danny struggled to his feet, raising his fists, and praying that he wouldn't have to actually fight.
âI will teach you to learn to respect your betters, boy,â Vlad said with a grin as ectoplasm pooled in his hands, he raised them up andâ
And was suddenly slammed to the side by the bottom of a hoverboard connecting with his face.
Danny flinched backwards as Valerie screamed, âGet away from him you disgusting ghost!â
And he'd never been happier to have her barge into his fight with guns drawn. Maybe because they weren't aimed at him.
Valerie immediately went for Vlad with a vicious series of shots aimed right at his core, forcing him to weave and dodge. A few of the shots went wide and slammed into the side of the gym, causing the whole building to groan and start to tilt dangerously.
âVaâRed Huntress!â Danny called, trying to get her attention, âBe careful where you aim, the gym is about toââ
He didnât get the warning out in time.
Vlad laughed as he fired off an ectoblast big enough to throw Valerie backwards with the shear force of it. Right into the side of the gym.
She slammed into the side of the building and Danny watched in horror as the cracks spread and grew, widening into holes before the whole building gave one last groan and then promptly toppled over with a deafening crash.
Right on top of Valerie.
Danny caught a split second glimpse of her helmet staring up at the approaching building before it touched down and he instinctively raised his hands to protect his face from the explosion of dust that blew out from the collapse.
âNo!â He screamed as he immediately ran to the rubble, scanning desperately for any sign of her. There was none.
Please let her suit keep her safe.
Vlad snorted and Danny glared up at him with a snarl. Vlad only raised his hands and gave a pointed look at the collapsed building. âWell, have fun with that. Iâll get back to my scheduled possessions.â And then he took off, laughing.
If Danny let him go now then Vlad would turn more of the town against him, would make his life even harder.
But. Val.
Val was under the rubble. She was most likely hurt, especially considering the fact that she hadnât burst out of the wreckage with her guns blazing, and he couldnât just leave her.
So Danny turned his full attention back to the mess of rubble in front of him, subconsciously reaching out with his ghost sense and thereâ
A sense of ghostliness, a tickling at the edge of his awareness. It wasnât his own exhausted ectoplasm he was feeling, this was subtler, more repressed. Controlled. Molded.
Heâd felt this before, tasted it at the back of his tongue every time he talked to Valerie ever since she became the Red Huntress. Which meant that it had to be her suit!
With new hope he reached for his core, desperately grasping that cool sensation and wrapping it around himself to turn into a stronger, more useful, version of himself andâ
Nothing happened.
He was too tired, too empty. Even without changing form he might be able to dig her out; he still had some of his abilities as a human, but it would take a long time. Too long.
That left him with intangibility. With it he could probably reach her much faster, but she would see him. She would know.
It didnât matter.
Danny bit down on the panic blooming in his chest and resolutely pressed it back down. He couldn't afford it right now. Valerie's life was more important than his secrets. He would deal with the fall out afterwards. He always did.
Danny turned himself intangible, took a deep breath, and reached out.
ââ
Valerie was crushed by the rubble all around her. She tried to pull in a breath, gritting her teeth as her rib cage protested the action. If she didnât have her suit on she was sure that she would have been dead by now.Â
She had lost the grip on her gun in the chaos and there was no way she could reach the one strapped to her belt to try and blast her way out. Still, she needed to get out. She couldnât leave that ghost alone with Danny, she needed to save him.
But she couldnât move, couldnât even pull in enough air to curse. This realization made her chest tighten further. What if she wasnât able to pull herself out of this? What if she was stuck down here in the dark until her air ran out?
Just as the panic started to set in, suddenly, there was a hand on her arm and just as suddenly she could breathe again. The rubble didnât crush her any more and she was floating as if in a safe bubble. As if separate from the world.
Then she was pulled up, up, up and out.
Daylight reached her and she blinked dazed eyes as she tried to focus. And she looked up at the person who had saved her; looked up at Danny right through their clasped hands.
She stared at Danny's worried face through her own hand for a long moment, uncomprehending. Her first thought was what happened to Plasmius? Her second was oh, Iâm dead, arenât I?
But then she paused. No, that wasnât right. She had been stuck under that rubble and it hadn't been until Danny had grabbed her that she had turned intangible. He had done it to her.
Which meant that he wasâThat Danny wasâ
âValerie?â He asked with worry clear on his face. His face that looked so familiar; no anger or malice or evil in sight. Just... Danny. Danny who wasâ
âDanny?â She asked carefully, voice rough and shaking as she sat up on the dusty ground, not trusting her legs to carry her if she attempted to stand.
âYes?â The worried frown didnât leave his face as he let go of her arm, giving her some space. âAre you okay?â
âI'mâYeah. I'm good. Are youâ?â She stopped herself. Of course he wasn't. He was deâ
But he acted just like normal.
It wasnât fair. He should be angry and violent and give her a reason to feel like her world was crashing down around her, joining the school gym in a heap on the ground. He wasnât supposed to look at her with worry and kindness after helping her up. After saving her.
So how could he possibly be a ghost? Had he died just now? Because she had made a split-second mistake and gotten taken out of the fight? Because she hadnât been fast enough to save him?
She might be out of the rubble, but she still felt crushed.
At least he wasn't fighting and destroying things. Yet. Maybe he hadn't been dead long enough for him to be corrupted? Did she still have to hunt him? She had to, right? He was a ghost. But had he done anything to deserve it?
âŠDid it matter? He was a ghost. And that should be all there was to it.
She found that it wasnât.
âValerie?â Danny asked and his open expression conveyed only worry, a hand outstretched as if to support her. As if he didnât even know that heâd justâ
Wait⊠Did Danny even know?
Valerie felt cold wash through her at the realization that he probably didnât. Which meant that she had to be the one to tell him. Or wait, maybe she shouldnât; if he didnât know then maybe he didn't have to turn evil. Maybe she wouldnât have to hunt him down.
âWhat happened?â The question was out of her mouth before she could stop it, an instinctual demand for answers and an explanation for what was in front of her.
Danny pulled his hand back with a suddenly guarded expression on his face, fear creeping into his eyes. âWhat do you mean?â
He knew. He had to know. He had to.
Her silence made his worried frown reappear and he crouched down in front of her. âAre you sure youâre okay?â
âStop that!â She was surprised by the anger in her own voice as she pushed him away, but she hated the fact that he acted like normal.
âVal?â His eyes were wide and full of hurt and she hated it. âWhatâs going on?â
Wait. How did he know her name? She was in her suit, he shouldnât knowâ
Her hand went to her face and immediately found the big hole in her helmet. So thatâs how heâd seen her face. But. He hadnât seemed surprised. Which meant that he had already known.
Secrets. Lies. He had lied to her. He had manipulated her. Just like a ghost. And now he was pretending to help her, pretending to be her friend, pretending to be Danny!Â
She felt hot anger rise in her chest and fuel the blazing hate as she pulled out her gun and trained it between his wide eyes. âDonât move.â
Danny drew back, stumbling on the same plank from which he had pulled her up from underneath. As if he was a normal human. As if he could feel surprise.
Then he stammered out, âIâm notâIâm Danny! IâI would never hurt you!â
She knew that he was Danny. That was the whole problem!
She kept her gun trained on him and tried to keep her hands from shaking. She didnât feel any of the usual satisfaction that came from staring down a ghost through the barrel of her gun. âDonâtââ She swallowed heavily and tried again, âDonât move.â
He didnât. He just cowered in front of her, hands up to protect his face and his wide, wide eyes full of fear fixed on her. As if she was the danger here. As if she was the monster.
She felt like one.
Besides, if she was responsible for his death then she was also responsible for the creation of an evil ghost. Didnât that make her just as bad?
The ghost sounded exactly like Danny as heâit said, âValerie?â
Her hand twitched on the gun as she tried desperately to think. Maybe he really wasnât aware that heâd died. Could he still be evil? Could she hunt him down for sins he hadnât committed yet?
She couldnât keep this from him. She couldnât. It would kill her too.
But this was Danny.
She looked at his wide eyes and imagined his reaction to her telling him that he was dead. It would be like killing him all over again. She couldnât do it.
It might kill her not to say anything, but she had to stay strong. She would keep it from him for as long as possible. She would make sure he didnât realize he was dead, keeping her eyes on him to make sure he didnât start acting like a ghost, make sure he didnât hurt anyone, and when he inevitably did she wouldâ
She would put him down.
Danny kept his gaze fixed on her as he asked in a small voice, ââŠVal?â He looked up at her with his blue eyes, and sheâ
She lowered her gun. And she hated him so much at that moment that it burned in her chest.
As she holstered the weapon she tried to play her actions off with an angry, âDonât tell anyone. About me.â Maybe he would believe that her threats had been in response to him finding out about her secret identity. She had to make sure he didn't find out the truth.
Relief flashed across his face. As if he had been scared she would say something else. She told herself again that he didn't know. âYeah, of course I wonât.â He gave her a shaky smile and a tremulous laugh. âYou have no idea how badly Iâve wanted to tell you, both that I knew, and thatâWell, you know.â
âThatâs⊠great,â Val managed, the words stiff on her tongue. She found that him knowing her secret identity didn't matter that much anymore. She also found that it was harder to talk to him than she had thought, to act like normal when everything had changed. âI just. I have to go home.â
Home. Would he be safe to go home? The whole town knew about his parentsâ obsession with hunting ghosts and he would be going into that situation blind. She focused her suit's remaining sensors and let out a breath of relief as she noted that he didnât show up as a ghost. It was probably a side-effect of just being created and still being weak, but she would take it. It would mean that he was safe for the time being.
He gave an easy laugh. âRight! Your dad must be worried.â
Valerie barely held back a flinch at the ghost mentioning her dad. He wasnât threatening him, she reminded herself. He didnât even know that he was dead.
But that didnât mean that she wanted her dad anywhere near him.
Danny, oblivious to her whirling thoughts, waved as he turned away. âSee you tomorrow!â
In school. As if nothing had changed.
Val gritted her teeth and flew off, not able to make herself respond. She felt like the crushing pressure hadn't lifted off her at all, despite being out of the rubble.
ââ
In school she watched Sam and Tucker hang around Danny with a knot in her stomach. No one in their tight-knit little group acted out of the ordinary. She took in Dannyâs smile as he got punched in the shoulder by Tucker and reeled. Did Danny really die only for no one to notice? Not even his closest friends? Not even him?Â
Val watched and watched and came to the conclusion that they hadnât. They all acted exactly like normal. Which meant that the knowledge of his death was only her burden to bear. So she squared her shoulders and went on with her day. She could do this.
It was her fault that he had ended up like this in the first place and she wouldâShe would carry this for them all. As long as no one realized then it was fine, right? It was like nothing happened.
The only real difference was the glances that Danny kept sneaking her whenever he thought she wasnât looking. She guessed it was because of what had happened the day before; even if he wasn't aware of the fact that he'd died it must have been traumatic for someone not used to it to get attacked by a ghost.
She could do this, she repeated as she watched him drop a ball in gym class. No, not dropped. It slipped through his hand.
He looked around with wide eyes as if to see why that had happened.
And since she couldnât let him realize the truth, she stepped in. âI heard Skulker messed with the gym storage last week. A lot of the equipment has been weird ever since.â
Her voice came out slightly shaky and she swallowed the lump in her throat when Danny stared at her with fear for a split second before he gave her a small smile full of relief. âThanks for the heads up. Haha, I thought I had just gotten even clumsier.â
And then he went back to what he'd been doing, as if nothing had happened, leaving Valerie to get herself back under control.
It was hard to talk to him, knowing that he was dead and not being able to say anything. She felt like she missed him which was ridiculous because he was right there. As if nothing had happened.
Really, she couldnât understand how no one else hadnât noticed, not even his closest friends. Not even himself. She thanked the gods that he was so oblivious.
But that didnât mean that no one would. She checked her scanner between classes and let out a breath of relief every time she confirmed that he still didnât show up on it. Combined with him acting normally, it probably meant that he was still safe at home if nothing else.
But acting like normal wasn't foolproof. In English class when Mr Lancer handed out worksheets, he must have touched Danny while handing him his papers because he flinched back with a startled, âWuthering Heights Mr Fenton! Your hands are ice-cold!â
Danny looked startled, as if he hadnât noticed anything strange about his hands. And of course he hadnât, the dead didnât feel warmth.
Val, from her seat next to Danny, leaned over and said, as casually as she could manage, âYou always had such bad circulation Danny. Maybe you should try wearing gloves?â
Danny gave her a grateful look. âThanks. Iâll⊠Maybe I will.â
During the rest of the class he kept sneaking glances at her and Valerie felt herself tense up more and more as time went on. Every time she looked at him he sent her a conspiratorial smile and turned back to his worksheet. He was trying to spy on her, to suss her out, her mind screamed.
But after class he just gave her a small nod and left. Leaving her to watch after him. And she watched. And watched.Â
Valerie watched him laugh with his friends, knowing he was dead. She watched him eat lunch, knowing he was dead. She watched him get bullied by Dash, knowing he was dead. She watched him live his life, knowing he was dead. He was dead.
He was dead. And only she knew.
Did it count as him dying if she was the only one that knew? Since he had only died in her eyes then maybe a part of him was still alive somewhat. She didn't know. She hoped so. It was driving her crazy.Â
She found that it was really hard to mourn someone by herself. Someone who was still around. Someone who was standing right in front of her, laughing and living his life.
And everyone acted as if nothing had happened.
And then the day was over.
Val went home as if in a trance.
She didnât go out as Red Huntress that night.
ââ
The next day was the same.
And the day after that.
As time moved on she found herself dreading the day he finally realized that he'd died and she had to put him down. She tried to convince herself that she looked forward to it instead; that she would be rid of this empty feeling in her chest. Be rid of the dread and horror she felt every time she looked at him.
Despite this, she watched him more than ever. But she still could barely bring herself to talk to him and instead she started checking her scanner every chance she got.
A majority of the time he didn't show up, not registering as anything ghostly, but the issue was that sometimes he did.Â
The first time it happened Valerie's breath caught in her throat and she'd grabbed her gun before making the conscious decision to do so.
It was confirmation. It was damnation. Part of her had hoped that she'd been mistaken after the rubble; confused and dazed and seeing things. But he was dead. He was dead and he just hadnât moved on. But that didnât mean that she couldnât. It was just hard to do when you were watching him attending school everyday as if nothing had happened.
But then the dot on the scanner had gone away. And then it came back.Â
He seemed to flip between showing up and not on a regular basis, with him being detectable often coinciding with a ghost attack or similar.
Danny would straighten up from being half-asleep in class, or stop in the middle of a sentence and then excuse himself from the room.
Valerie had never figured out where he went or why but he always showed back up not long after, often injured and trying to hide it. Her best guess was that he got hunted by people or that ghosts attacked him.
At least no one ever complained that Danny had attacked them, so she felt safe to assume he hadnât turned evil yet and she was determined to keep it that way.
But maybe that was just wishful thinking; she was desperately trying to come up with reasons why she wouldn't have to hunt Danny down.
Once, he showed up on the scanner and for once she managed to follow him out of the classroom and all the way to an empty classroom. Only to find him talking to a ghost.
The ghost in question was a black and white kid and Danny sat on a chair while the kid floated at his side, both of them engrossed in what seemed to be a deep conversation. Danny didnât give any indication of caring about the fact that his conversation partner was dead. Did that mean that he'd realized what he was? But. Neither of them attacked anyone. They just talked.
Valerie stood still just outside the classroom, peeking inside through the slightly cracked door and felt her anger rise. Because here Danny was, a ghost, conniving with another ghost right under her nose, even though he knew who she was, knew that she went to this school.
And they were just talking. And that was the worst part, because under the anger and the guilt and the pain, there was fear. Fear that she'd been wrong about ghosts this entire time.
But that was impossible.
She hurried away from the classroom and didn't know if she was angry or worried or sad anymore, she only knew that she needed to get away from there.Â
Before the next class started, Danny came back and sat down in his seat to talk to his friends. No ghost attack happened that day.Â
Valerie started putting even more effort into avoiding Danny than she had before.
Sadly, she couldnât avoid him forever and he caught her after their last class a few days later. Before she could shoulder her way past him and out the door he said softly, âVal. I just wanted to say⊠Thank you. For looking out for me. ItâIt means a lot.â
She glowered as she balled her fists at her sides. âDonât thank me.â
âI mean it, I reallyââ
âDonât,â she cut him off before she skirted past him, making sure not to touch.
She couldnât handle him thanking her for something she hadnât done. She hadnât looked out for him, thatâs why he had died in the first place.
She was shaking for the rest of the day. But the conversation made her realize that she had to tell him the truth. Both for her own sake and for his.Â
If he'd started showing up on scanners then it was only a matter of time before his parents figured him out. And after that it wouldn't be long until he figured out that something was wrongâif his parents didn't simply do what she hadn't been able to and put him down without hesitation. And that was. Hm. She found that she didn't like the thought of that.
Not that she was worried for him or anything like that. Of course not.
But regardless of why, she realized that she couldnât do this any longer. She couldnât pretend that nothing had happened. Which left her with the problem of how to tell someone that they were dead.
The first step was easy; after a few days of gathering courage she asked him to meet her after school, and of course he said yes. He was Danny.
They filed into an empty classroom, the same one she had seen Danny talking to a ghost in, and she took a deep breath before deciding that there was no easy way of doing this. She would just have to go for it. So she squared her shoulders and said, âDanny, Iâmâ Iâm so sorry.â
That stopped him short. He tilted his head at her. âWhat for?â
âYouâyouâre dead,â she managed, teeth gritted and hands in tight fists.Â
He blinked at her. âI⊠know?âÂ
He didnât seem surprised.
Valerie scowled. âYou know?!â Valerie tried to keep her voice down, failing as she continued, âSince when?!â
She had been so scared, so alone. And he had known?!
And if he'd known, then why hadn't he moved on? Could he be that scared of ghost hunters? His own parents?Â
She had lived in fear of ghosts for so long, it was strange to think of a ghost hiding out of fear for her, for humans.
She also knew how hard it had been for her to accept that he was dead, she couldnât imagine what it would be like for him.
He frowned with clear confusion. âSince it happened? I thought you knew? Or what was up with the last few days?â
âButââ She cut herself off, reeling. âBut you didnât react. You didnât seem to notice.â
âWhat?â
âPlasmius,â she tried to clarify with a reeling mind. âThe rubble.â
He frowned in what appeared to be confusion for a second before his eyes widened in realization. âAh. So you saw that.â
Him making her intangible, she guessed.
âYeah. And youâ Danny, you died.â
Then he shook his head with a small, sad, smile. âOh. Oh, no. That wasnât whenâ It happened a long time ago.â
Valerie blinked.
So maybe. Maybe he had been dead for a while. Maybe she hadnât been the one to kill him. She thought that should make her feel better. It didnât.
Because the immediate question that popped into her head was; how long had he been pretending to get this good at it? How long had he been dead?
Which, of course, led to; how had he been able to hang around her? Date her? Had he ever even liked her?Â
He knew how she felt about ghosts. But then again, she also knew what his parents thought about ghosts.
âYou havenât shot me,â he observed and she hated the calm acceptance he said it with.
âNot yet.â
But that seemed to be enough for him as Danny slumped in relief. For some reason, he smiled. âYou have no idea how nice it's been to have someone else knowing the truth. Thanks again for all the help, it means a lot.âÂ
Before she could protest his thanks for the second time, he continued with a much more serious expression, âI justâI'm sorry. I never meant to mess things up for you.â
He never had. Even though heâd been dead for a long time he had never let that affect anyone else as far as she could tell. âI know.â
âAnd, please, donât tellââ
Who would she tell? The school? No one would believe her. His parents the ghost hunters? They would capture him or attack him immediately.
But wasnât that what she wanted? He was a ghost, after all.
ââŠVal?â
âI wonât.â
He relaxed. âThank you. And IâIâm sorry you found out this way. I didnât want to keep it from you, butâWellâŠâ
She knew why he hadnât told her he was a ghost; she hadnât kept her hatred of ghosts a secret. And still, he had hung around her. And a part of her still screamed that it had been to find out her weaknesses, to try and hurt her.
No, she chided herself, she knew better. He had tried to hide for his own safety and to spare her feelings.
Cause now she had found out and he wasnât attacking her, wasnât threatening her, was even asking for her forgiveness despite everything she had done wrong. All he was doing was talking to her like a person. Like Danny. Because that was all heâd ever been.
âItâItâs fine,â she found herself saying and found that for the first time since the rubble she could breathe again.
She reached out and laid a hand on his arm, gripping tight when she could feel him solid beneath her palm and neither of them turned invisible. He looked up in surprise but didn't shake her off. And this time it was Valerie who dragged him forward, into the crushing embrace of her arms.
Danny was dead, but he was still here.
And nothing truly had happened.

JATP x DBDA crossover where the Phantoms are free but Willie still isnât and Caleb is playing dirty now that the boys have bested him (possessing Nick but also cmon he definitely has more magic up his sleeve) so they start trying to figure out Magic on their own, which is really just Julie and Flynn googling things and trying out various types of magic/spells/scam artists in the area, only for someone to come across something to do with the DBDA who are happy to take the case đ
I have too many WIPs for this but just some ideas floating around my head:
- Crystal at first butts heads with Julie and Flynn (residual mean girl tendencies/differing senses of humor) but end up bonding over being surrounded by (dumb) dead teenage boys
- None of the Phantoms are good at proper spells but their music 100% has magical properties that is utilised in whatever final battle type event happens
- Edwin has come to terms with Charlesâs eccentricities but the Phantoms are a whole other type of teenage boy and I think he would be just so catty about it all. Like why are they cute and so stupid this is ridiculous why the Hell did we even take this case can they please take this seriously
- Charles and Reggie vibe. I donât make the rules
- Flynn canât see the boys either which naturally leads to hijinks
- Monty attends a concert (he deserves to have fun) and while I considered him being the link between the two groups I think it would be funnier if he decided to go to a concert and runs into them coincidentally
- Based on a precursory AO3 search Iâve seen some fics where Monty gets in trouble with Caleb which makes sense with the whole magic familiar angle but Iâm not copying here so I wonât get into that
- I think Willie interacting with DBDA would be wild. Like. Dead pretty boy with a sense of humour and tragic backstory? Theyâre all swooning fr
- Niko (shhh) gets along with Julie and Flynn IMMEDIATELY like they are talking about shows and DIYing things together and itâs great
- Crystal gets along better/faster with Julie and Flynn with Niko present fs
- Thereâs at least one dance number with everyone involved
- possessed!Nick is still trying to woo Julie and not only do we get the Phantoms side eyeing him but now we get the DBDA just openly judging him (Crystal roasts the shit out of that fedora and sheâs RIGHT)
- Crystal would decimate any of Carrieâs attempts at being bitchy so I think we have to redeem Carrie for that reason alone
- DBDA goes to a JATP concert and the boys are actually awful at vibing there. Like Crystal is relatively normal (idk if itâs her scene but sheâs been to concerts before) but Edwin does not know what to do at a modern concert and Charles is used to a much different style of dancing/concerts (I donât know enough abt aka punk to elaborate unfortunately but ykwim)
- girls night includes style swapping bc the DBDA girlies deserve some butterfly clips and the JATP girlies deserve some eyeliner
- in the nature of JATP I donât think Caleb gets sent to hell in the end but I do think his ending needs to be ridiculous. Like have him get the Night Nurse treatment and get eaten by that fish so he can be redeemed by Kashi
- not to bring up Monty again but I think he sticks around and keeps up with the JATP crew more than the DBDA (he is not interested in any more of that Hell/monster energy and thatâs so valid of him)
- montage of Edwin and Charles teaching the Phantoms ghost abilities (I canât remember if/how they vary between shows but if so shhh or explain it away yk)
- Unseen Emily reprise and itâs all the boys mourning loved ones. Just for the feels.
- Actually just more backstories for everyone please
- Love ballad/slow song that Willex and/or Payneland dance to đ„°
- Palasaki being openly in love (which inspires whatever the Flynn x Carrie ship is bc I love them)

We're seeing Celebrimbor and Sauron as themselves, the best and worst of who they are, and I'm really in awe of both of them for different reasons. And the actors holy crap.
I'm in awe of Sauron for showing his real self to Celebrimbor. He's a mess because of Melkor in ways he is not quite aware of, but this time with Celebrimbor will give him insights into himself that would not have been possible without our favorite elven smith. I bet the fallout from this time in Eregion will sneak up on Sauron in unexpected ways later.
I'm in awe of Celebrimbor's brilliance and his bravery. He fought his way out of that nearly flawless illusion by force of will alone, and no one else has been able to do that (maybe Adar, but we don't know that Sauron constructed a whole fantasy world for him or not, and with Galadriel it was Sauron who played along in her fantasy).
I have no doubt after their scenes in this episode that Sauron loves Celebrimbor; as much as a being like Sauron is capable of love after forsaking emotional love all those eons ago, he loves this genius artist.
The tears in Sauron's eyes during "it's a pity" gave me chills.
And Celebrimbor admitted that a part of him knew that something was not right but he wanted what Sauron had to offer anyway. One of the things Sauron offered was collaboration and creation with someone on his level. They have a deep understanding of each other despite the enmity and Sauron will mourn in his own twisted way when it is finally over.
Yes, Celebrimbor went back to stall Sauron so Galadriel would escape safely with the rings, but I think he went back because even if the "light" he spoke about is elsewhere, the color and the connection are still by Sauron's side and he has chosen that place for his end. He and Galadriel could have escaped together easily enough, there was no compelling strategic reason for Celebrimbor to go back, but he went anyway. To do what he could, and because he's the only one who can "play the game" on Sauron's level.
But Celebrimbor knows it's almost over; for an artist to destroy one of his hands, well.
I'll probably have more to say about this after I really unpack it, but it's as if Celebrimbor knows that Sauron is as obsessed with him as he is with the rings, and their game-playing has reached more than a fever pitch, so Celebrimbor understands that Sauron will not be able to resist the chance to best him and prove whose will is stronger.
But this version of Sauron ... will be changed after this time in Eregion. He has cast off the facade of Halbrand completely and will be unrecognizable to Galadriel (I hope that's what helps her defeat him or get away) but he has crossed another threshold and will never be able to go back to the point when he arrived for the second time in Eregion and made a choice to follow old paths of destruction, and the even older pattern of abuser and abused.
Will we see Celebrimbor displayed as Sauron's "banner" in the next episode? I'm not sure, but it makes sense because if Celebrimbor dies Sauron will not be able to let him go right away, not even his body, not even in death.
(I'm tagging this silvergifting because that ship predates everything, and this episode was as close to an interpretation of book canon as I could imagine, and I'm still in awe of the performances from these actors and what I feel is the show's way of nodding to us old school fans.)
