The sun dips under the horizon, its orange light filtering through the window blinds of your home. The chatter and boisterous laughter of your parents and their friends begins to get louder as you step towards the living room.

“Ready, ( y/n )?” Your father makes quick notice of your presence, peering over his shoulder at the sound of your footsteps. Jaewoo, your 13 months old brother, is cradled in your father’s arms and sound asleep.

A small “mhm” escapes your lips as you nod, fiddling with the dress your mother picked out.

Your mother gestures you over next to her after realizing you were approaching. “C’mon, greet our friends.”

You reluctantly step forward into the center of the dimly lit room, bowing awkwardly towards the couple beside your parents. “Hello..” You murmur.

“Waah, ( y/n ) is so cute and respectful as always~” The woman beside your mother smiles softly. She then quickly turns her attention elsewhere, eyeing the area behind you with a hum: “Hmm? Wait.. where did Yeonjunnie go?”

You blink: once, twice.. and realize your best friend disappeared.

Your body spins 180 degrees in an instant, facing the empty hallway, confused. He wouldn’t stop following you around the whole morning and now he’s just gone?

“( y/n )-ah, do you know where Yeonjun went? Can you go find him for us? We have to leave soon.” Your mother asks. You answer with an ok without a choice, scurrying off to search your home for the boy.

[october 6th, 2012 — 7:06 pm]

“Jun.. ?” You call out softly, turning the corner to the last place on your list: the downstairs bathroom. The knuckles of your hand gently tap against the door and the door unclicks.

The raven haired boy is sprawled on the floor in front of the bathroom door, back facing the ceiling. He quietly sniffles as you stare at the unexpected sight and pad inside.

“.. What are you doing??” You frown, sitting down next to Yeonjun’s head and pulling your legs to your chest.

Silence.

“We have to go soon, you know.. Your mom’s gonna get you in trouble if we’re late.” You continue despite his unresponsive behavior.

He replies with muffled nonsense into the floor. You reply by pushing his head with your index finger to roll it on his cheek.

His eyes are visibly red and puffy, lips rolling into a pout while he looks up at you. “I said, I don’t wanna go.” He readjusts his head back to his original position: right on the floor. “Now leave me alone.”

A sigh escapes your lips as you push yourself back onto your feet. “Get up, bubs.”

“‘Bubs’??” That gets him to lift his head, at least.

“You know, like bubbles. Because you cry like a baby.”

Yeonjun sulks, finally deciding to stand up and chasing after you to the bathroom door. “No I don’t, cactus.”

“‘Cactus’??” Now it’s your turn to look at him and sulk.

“Because you’re spiky and pointy.” Yeonjun blows a raspberry at you.

“Ok, bubs.” You stop to shut the lights and close the door after he walks out with a frown. “Why did you cry, though?”

“I didn’t cry.” Yeonjun crosses his arms, eyes darting everywhere but your face as he comes up with an excuse. “There was just.. water. In my eyes.”

“Ok.” You repeat. “Then you don’t need to hold my hand right?”

“Yeah- yeah. Obviously.”

“( y/n )?? Yeonjun?? We’re leaving~” Your mother’s voice cuts through from the upper floor, interrupting your conversation. The two of you race up the stairs to the front door, both your parents standing patiently.

[october 6th, 2012 — 7:34 pm]

“Looks like it already started.” Your father hums, tilting his head to better see the sky from the windshield.

The window is cool against your cheek as you look at your surroundings. The sun had completely set, leaving a dark blue sky in its place. In a moment’s notice, streaks of color rise into the sky and scatter in bright trails. Fireworks.

Your eyes light up, reflecting the vivid lights, stifling a giggle as giddiness creeps up your body.

The car rolls to a stop, parking in an empty space on a street just outside your destination. The adults exit the car first before unlocking the door for you and Yeonjun; meanwhile, your father and Jaewoo stay seated in the car.

Then you hear it: obnoxiously loud and clear.

As more dazzling lines of glitter burst from the sky, an unmistakable crackle and boom echoes in your eardrums.

A sudden wave of warmth spreads from your arm as soon as the sound hits. Flinching, your head shoots to your side.

It’s Yeonjun, latching onto you for dear life, hands just barely trembling. He blinks back at you and immediately lets go, the realization slapping him in the face.

“You’re scared.” You say in a monotone voice.

“N-“ He opens his mouth to protest, but shuts it off and looks down. “I mean.. maybe.”

You lift your hand. He takes it hesitantly.

“I knew you would need to hold my hand, bubs.” You whisper.

“.. Shut up, cactus.” He mumbles back.

[PRESENT: march 4th, 2025 — 6:58 am]

The daybreak light blinds your sleepy eyes as they flutter open. A groan slips out as you sit up, stretching your arms and looking out the window.

You shut your eyes again, still half-asleep, as your mind starts to flash memories once more. The cool autumn air and vibrant sky is clear again, despite the numerous attempts to shut it down.

The buzzing of your phone interrupts your thoughts. Peering at the nightstand beside your bed, you decide to shake it off.

‘There’s no point in thinking about him now..’ You grab your phone and head for the bathroom. ‘Just get yourself together.’

MED STUDENTS NATION RISE! You're curled up in a fetal position on the couch, head resting on your knees, eyes closed, cramps hitting you in waves as you fight back the building tears. Yudai only got home a few minutes ago, but he's already sitting with you and rubbing your back. It's slow and calming, a simple distraction from the pain. But it's not enough, not really.

He has half his attention on you—still on the phone with his manager about some scheduling conflict. You hate to interrupt his work, even if he's supposed to be off hours now. But you need him. Need him to hug you tight, need him to whisper in your ear that the worst of the pain will be over soon and he wishes he could take it all away from you, need him to kiss you till you forget about everything else. But, even though you want it so badly, you'll be patient. Somehow, interrupting him still feels worse than the thrumming pain.

Yudai is impatient for this phone call to finish. It's stupid, really, and an issue that does not need even an ounce of his attention to get resolved. Off work hours are supposed to be down-time, precious moments with you that he doesn't get enough of. He works a lot, and balancing a relationship on top of it all is overwhelming at times. But he's never doubted you, or your ability to make things work despite his busy schedule. You're it for him. He'd choose you in a room of a million people. He would follow you to the farthest corners of the Earth. And in a few months, he knows that he'll be looking at the ring on your finger with a lovesick smile knowing you agreed to be with him forever.

Yudai wants to give the world to you, but you would never ask him to.

You're selfless, and sometimes, it frustrates your boyfriend. It's unfair that he can't give you as much time and attention as he wants, or as much as you deserve. You always say that it's more than enough for you, that being with him is all you need. But Yudai thinks otherwise.

He's caring and thoughtful and full of affection for you, but sometimes, Yudai thinks he doesn't give you enough attention. And it bothers him like an itch that won't go away—how unfair the situation is. After hours of not seeing him on a day where your cramps have not left you alone for even a second, he's still stuck on the phone.

Yudai has half a mind to hang up on his manager, silence all notifications, and finally be able to give you the full comfort you need. But he knows he'd get an earful for it the next day, and you would be horrified at the decision. You hate "getting in the way" of his work much more than you hate distance between you, and you've told him enough times that the thought is always stuck in his head. He hates that you think like that. What bothers him more is that he knows you would already be in his arms without hesitation if he wasn't still busy with work-related things.

"Book it on my day off—that's fine. I understand that it's an important brand deal, just, do we really have to discuss this right now?" Yudai mutters. You can hear the annoyance in his tone. Yudai doesn't even care if his manager picks up on it too—anything to get off this stupid phone call. After some more pushing, he finally hangs up.

"I'm sorry about that. I don't know why he's calling me so late. He should've just texted," Yudai sighs.

You lift your head from your curled up position, eyes meeting Yudai's. He mirrors your pout and pulls you fully into his arms without another word. He knows what you want right now. He's done this enough times to read you with a single glance—been with you through all the painful moments to know how to apply the bandages.

He doesn't think of it as a burden or a hassle, but more of a privilege. You think he's insane for it—acting as if it's his duty to be your personal butler on your period—but Yudai won't have it any other way. In his mind, it is his duty. He gets to be the one to hug you tightly and ward off your pain. Him, out of all people. He's the one you go to for comfort in the most vulnerable times. He's proud of it. You, who hate to be a bother so much, know that you can take up space around your boyfriend.

It wasn't always like this. Yudai still remembers the times when you were too embarrassed to complain about the pain, even when it was something as natural as period cramps. He holds you even tighter at the thought, pressing a little on your lower stomach, right where it hurts the most. You whimper a little and curl into him more. He kisses the top of your head.

"Did you eat dinner? Craving anything? I can order something to be delivered," Yudai offers with a kiss to your lips.

"Something spicy. And some chocolate?"

Your boyfriend has it done within the next minute. You're not even sure how he keeps track of all the food delivery apps on his phone. He seems to have one for every cuisine on the planet. Yudai has always been a big foodie, and he usually tries your period cravings with you. They are never too outlandish, but he does like to slip jokes about what your future pregnancy cravings might be, making sure you know that he will also try those without hesitation.

Those comments always make you blush when they slip out. Starting a family with Yudai is… a decision for farther in the future. You both want it. It's always been a matter of when not if, but neither of you are fully ready for that responsibility yet. You let your mind wander a bit further down that road. With the way Yudai is holding you tightly and pressing kisses to every inch of skin he can get his hands on, you can only imagine how loving he will be to his future kids. How worried he'll get if they ever got sick. How protective he'll be of them…

You shake the thoughts off before they have a chance to bring your tears back for a different reason. The image of your boyfriend as a dad is too much for your mood swings to handle, so instead, you focus yourself on something else. Yudai's lips are soft and plush as they graze the skin of your neck and then a bit lower. He's taking his time mapping out the dips and curves of your collarbones, but you want something else. You tug gently on the collar of his shirt. The action is more than enough for him to know what you want.

His lips tangle with yours faster than you can blink, and at last, you have what you wanted.
