Please Watch Circle: Two Worlds Connected (Another Manifesto)

After convincing some ppl to watch White Christmas, I am filled with hubris and thus have returned to try to convince y'all to watch another kdrama thriller. This times it's Circle: Two Worlds Connected (2017). It's sci-fi, it's whumpy, it's got a dual timeline going on, and it's got a great cast. It's also one of the first kdramas I ever watched--I started it back in 2017, lost access to the site I was streaming it from, and 3 years later, when I became actually competent at finding kdramas, I remembered to go find it again! I've now watched it... four times? five times? anyway it's a good show so let's dive in.

The Premise

Every episode of Circle has two parts to it.

The first part: In 2017, a college student named Kim Woo-jin is having family problems. His paranoid twin brother is convinced aliens exist and are killing ppl. Woo-jin met an alien once when he was a kid, but he's been repressing this and ignoring the implications ever since bc of related trauma. Then Woo-jin's twin goes missing, and Woo-jin goes haywire trying to track him down.

The second part: In 2037, society has become a little dystopian, particularly in a closed-off island city called "Smart Earth". "Smart Earth" is supposed to be a place without crime, but when a murder takes place, Detective Kim Joon-hyuk, an outsider, worms his way in to investigate. Secretly he's more interested in investigating Smart Earth itself... and trying to find his long lost brother.

HM I WONDER IF THERE'S A REASON THESE CHARACTERS BOTH HAVE KIM AS A SURNAME. PROBABLY JUST A COINCIDENCE I WOULDNT KNOW. IM SURE THESE TWO MYSTERIES HAVE NO RELATION TO EACH OTHER AT ALL.

The Characters

Kim Woo-jin:

Yes that is Yeo Jin-goo (I feel like most of my followers have watched Beyond Evil, but if you haven't, maybe you know him from Hotel del Luna or The Crowned Clown, idk, he's great). And yes, he is incredibly stressed and will be for pretty much the entire show.

I feel like the main selling point of the first half of this show, apart from the mystery itself, really is just "do you want to see Yeo Jin-goo be so, so tired and act in progressively more insane and risky ways over the course of twelve episodes".

He is a very good brother. He also is in a dynamic duo with a girl who may or may not be an alien. More on that below.

Kim Bum-gyun

He's paranoid and he's not always the best brother. But he's trying to be better and also. He may be (at least partly) right.

Han Jung-yeon

"Hey look at me I'm a normal college student and definitely not an alien. Despite the fact that I do kind of look identical to that alien you met like fifteen years ago."

"Regardless that was not me bc I am normal. Let's become a detective duo!"

Kim Joon-hyuk

Played by Kim Kang-woo! I feel like he's a bit less known than Yeo Jin-goo but I still love him. Very versatile actor. In this he's being your typical unruly cop but with Many Secrets. Going into much more detail than that would unfortunately give spoilers but I like seeing him piss Lee Ho-soo off.

Lee Ho-soo

Nicknamed "Pierrot" by Kim Joon-hyuk for the way he's ~always smiling~, Lee Ho-soo is Smart Earth's ideal peacekeeping employee. He thoroughly believes in their dystopian mood regulating technology and closed off society and no, he does not want to learn any deep dark secrets, thank you very much!!! Leave him alone!!!! (Yeah, he's going to go through all kinds of emotional breakdowns lols.) My favorite character on my first watch-through; later I began to stan Woo-jin more but it's a close thing.

So, so, so...

Is It Shippy?

Honestly, kind of depends on what you're looking for. The most obvious ships would be Kim Woo-jin/Han Jung-yeon, a ship that is very teased but never becomes canon, and Lee Ho-soo/Kim Joon-hyuk, a classic bickering-but-gradually-coming-to-understand-each-other type of duo. There are other shippy routes you could take... my friend for example ships two of Woo-jin's professors. I personally think certain reveals could lend themself to a [REDACTED] [REDACTED] shipping dynamic, which is all too rare, but since I redacted that part you will never know what I mean by that.

Is there shippy fanfic out there? NO BECAUSE THERE ARE A TOTAL OF FOUR FANFICS FOR THIS SHOW ON AO3 AND I CANT FIND ANY ELSEWHERE EITHER. yes three of those are shippy. YES I WANT MORE PLEASE.

More General Thoughts

Circle is a little melodramatic and messy, but it is also very clever. Even after the basic worldbuilding becomes clear, you probably won't be able to guess all the answers to the mysteries until mm. Episode eleven of twelve? I mean I'm sure there are people out there much better at guessing than me but. I didn't.

I also think it's more fun to watch this show (at least the first time) with a bunch of different theories in your mind as to what happened during the time skip. I had at least three running concurrently. No, none of them were correct. I never said I was good at guessing I only said I had fun.

Not EVERY loose thread gets tied up by the end. But things do get mostly resolved. And there's a lot of angst and suspense along the way!

Closing thoughts:

If you've watched Circle, pls come talk to me sometime. If you haven't watched Circle, I recommend giving it a try! I can tell you that anecdotally ppl who I've forced to watch White Christmas and Circle both like Circle better (except me, I like White Christmas better but also I am to be fair obsessed with both).

And for now, I have successfully exorcised my Circle feels for the day. Probably. I hope. (I may be back.)

What does everyone else get wrong about your favorite character?

Well general viewer takes on Jenny are really.. not on point at all lol I think basically people forget she’s worthy of sympathy or don’t want to think critically about what she goes through, also anyone who thinks she’s straight is completely wrong.

What is a popular (serious) theory you disagree with?

This is not a fandom where I’m super involved in things like this… I think I once saw a Jenny is gossip girl theory and that’s absolutely laughable + I hate it.

Which character is not as morally bad as everyone else seems to think?

Jenny again, also Blair is simultaneously better and worse morally depending on which fans opinions we’re going off of. I think some statements about her evil are exaggerated and also like that post said she’s not even very competent in her evil a lot of the time.. I also think anyone who goes for validating the furniture ship by saying Blair is as morally bad as Ch*ck definitely hates women. But then on the other hand I do think there are Stans who glorify and baby her too much, especially when it comes to things like her treatment of Vanessa Jenny and at times Serena. Oh and Vanessa def counts actually!

Which character is not as morally good as everyone else seems to think?

Idk on this one… maybe Nate but I do think he’s probably the best person out of the mains and he probably is the male char on the show I find second most likable after Eric. But I have seen things in periphery like fans slut shaming Serena for sleeping with him but not taking him to task etc. just like general fandom things and not the worst example of it but I guess if anyone qualifies it’s him. But I still like, think he’s a pretty good person on the whole and I like the guy so I don’t have a lot of vehemence about this position

TXT ASM BULACAN RECAP:

still wrapping my head around the last 48 hours it's been a surreal experience! To think that a week ago I debated cancelling my trip because i was so anxious thinking about how large crowds make me panic and I didn't think I could handle this. Wow I am so glad I pushed through and went ahead with it because once I arrived at the venue the crowd wasn't at all an anxiety factor. Filipino moa are so incredibly kind enthusiastic and fun! I can't find enough nice words to say about everyone I met last night, be it waiting in line, taking photos for each other, exchanging freebies and photocards, navigating the venue together, and of course enjoying the concert together. Yeonjun was absolutely loving the crowd and he kept mentioning that they were the best among the entire tour and judging from fancams and having attended the Seoul concert myself I can definitely agree LOL no one can compete with filo moa!

I ended up sitting next to two middle aged women who were yeonjun stans and they were like "people think it's weird cause we're older than them but they (txt) remind me of my nephews and they feel like sons to me" and it made me want to say thank you someone gets it!!!! Fangirl love is much more than the reductionist love people assume fangirls have for boy bands. love and admiration come in so many forms and it's beautiful.

My favorite moments were the interactive moments they had with the crowd in between stages. They had a moment where they had the crowd copy what they were doing and saying, and soobin made moa shout "SOOBIN! You're a HOT GUY!" and it made all the members laugh. Kai had us say "Kai you're the best skrrrrrt" and everyone burst out laughing when the crowd did the skrrt part, like beomgyu genuinely lost it ahahahaha

Taehyun wasn't in the best condition unfortunately. it wasn't anything noticeable from an audience perspective but things started looking a bit off when he ran backstage twice during the ments of the other members. At first we thought he was just getting his in ear fixed, but when he disappeared a second time we were wondering what was up. He also looked pretty tired, and mentioned at the end of the concert that he felt a bit regretful because he wasn't feeling too great. However based on his vocals and dance I couldn't tell anything was off at all, like he has such a powerful voice and stage presence and it sucks knowing he didn't feel great :(

Kai and Beomgyu stole the show for me! I am absolutely bias wrecked by the birthday boy. He can belt some notes like damn. How do they do that?? Especially during blue hour and cysm when they're jumping so much for the chorus.

Can I just say I think soobin and I have a spiritual introvert connection cause seeing him being his usual awkward self on stage, shy from all the cheering and attention, and just generally being a bit of a dork, I felt this primal need to hug the guy and say SAME BESTIE

That kind of sums up the night - I felt like I was watching a group of friends who I met in college get up on stage and do some amazing shit but then chat with the crowd like they were on a stand up comedy skit. I think that's what I love so much about txt: they feel like your average silly dudes (dare I say a group of gay guys who you feel safe around or will that trigger the hetero fans lol) who then turn around after being all playful and unserious and pull off an incredibly professional and stellar show!

People can say what they want about parasocial relationships, but having this kind of connection with an artist is truly special and unforgettable. I've never experienced a concert like this where there was such a strong feedback loop of the fans giving the artist love and energy and them equally delivering it right back to us. It was a neverending cycle the whole night. The venue was so full of love, and I don't think I've laughed and smiled as much as I did yesterday in literal months. My heart feels so at ease.

Spreen gets the dream treatment from Komanche:

Komanche finds a twitter stan who tweeted something along the lines of 'i hope Spreen kills Komanche' and in 2020 dream fashion he takes the 2 like andy tweet and replies 'i guess i won't invite Spreen next time to avoid this community' Spreen and Komanche go back on forth on twitter for a bit Spreen saying he can't control his fans and Komanche saying he doesn't like Spreens community. the funny part is the OP wasn't even a Spreen fan she was a quackity main and also dsmp (beeduo) enjoyer so Komanche was shitting on this stupid barely liked tweet blaming Spreens 'toxic' community for something they had no part of

Komanche's Smajor moment:

It's day 3 and everyone is lining up for the egg game except they don't know it's the egg game yet. Komanche is very vocal about who should go where telling people which lines to get into. Now two separate things happen. First the TPing starts to happen this is to make sure the lines have an even amount of people in them. Originally Komanche was in the red line. While Komanche is in the red line a person named Darick I believe gets removed from the blue line because it's to full, however right after Komanche gets TP'd to the blue line. This is bizarre not only bc if blue team wasn't full allowing Komanche to be TP'd there then they wouldn't have had to remove Darick from that line. Also they are supposed to be TP'ing the last people in line only and Darick and Komanche were both some of the first people in their lines so they shouldn't have been TP'd anyway.

Second thing that happens is once they advanced through the doors and are waiting to get into the egg game Komanche says 'the admins trolled me, they told me this was the cookie game' hense why he went in the red line first bc he thought he would get a square cookie. Now first this reveals that he does know the games ahead of time but second most people think he was covering his ass and actually did know it was egg game the whole time. Here is why. First the TPing, people think that he was purposely tp'd to the blue team and that's why darick had to be removed. darick was crushed bc his team ended up losing and he kept saying 'i didn't even pick this team'. the blue team had some of the biggest players including quackity rubius spreen but what is even more interesting and the second reason people think Komanche knew it was going to be the egg game is when each colour got split into two teams Komanche was watching closely on who was going to which side and instead of choosing the team with all the people he knew he choose the side with people he didn't know that well but were known fall guys sweats. people think komanche knew it was going to be the egg game and purposely choose the fall guys players for his team as they would have more experience with that game. Komanche since has come out and said he does know all the games but feels it doesn't matter because everyone gets explained the games before they start and he is kind of like the old man in squidgames giving hints. He also said today that he didn't have control over where he got TP'd but do we trust someone verifying claims on themselves lol idk. Also rubius and auron both said they chose not to know the games to be surprised so Komanche had the choice as well and choose to know the games.

The egg glitch:

you probably all know about the egg glitch by now. during the egg game points were not registering properly for all teams but one of the blue teams got the worst of it bc they only lost by two points. as you know twitch decided to let those 14 disqualified players compete and 4 winners got let back in the game. some players feel none of them should have been left disqualified while most of the 14 think they should have all been allowed back into the game. the real drama comes when spreen exposes that other players are being toxic towards him and the revived players in the discord chat. he was upset because every day Komanche says people will be disqualified for being toxic yet nobody has been disqualified for it yet.

He looks so fascinating to me. I don’t think I’ve seen someone with his face shape before. Anything about him is ok, just tell me. And pls give me your best examples of his dancing! His dancing reminds me of Jimin. It’s so sharp!

I feel like I can immediately tell how he got you.

You saw him move, and then you saw his face. It’s the double-whammy effect of it that got you, isn’t it?

In spirit of full transparency (lol), I debated answering this ask because I like Jungwon a lot so I’m selfish with him. Liked him since he was on I-Land, I even put money down, betting that he was going to debut. And he made me good money by debuting, ranked 1st.

He’s a badass, he's beautiful and intelligent. His ambition is palpable and I can only hope he gets the right support. I think he has flaws (like everyone else in the group) that hopefully he learns to manage better the older he gets. I’m cautiously hopeful about the whole team, but trust his competencies as an idol.

When he performs Jungwon fully commits. Every time. You’ll see it when we watch his cover and fancams. That’s the thing about him that personally reminds me of Jimin, occasionally. He's a perfectionist, has high standards and holds himself to them. He’s competitive, emotionally intelligent, mindful of the team, kind and principled (at least so far), and that’s why he was nominated to be leader despite being the second youngest member. As Heeseung (the oldest) was the only other person nominated by the members, Heeseung declining the position in favour of Jungwon thankfully turned out to be the right choice. Jungwon appears to bear the responsibility well. But he’s also young, he’s got a bit of an ego (understandably lol), and he’s still relatively inexperienced.

So naturally, I’m selfish with him. I’ve also seen him make a lot of people very delulu when he’s barely legal, so I’m cautious on where I talk about him. Some k-pop stans can be weird and you never really know lol.

Anyway, I’m still happy you’re so curious to hear about him. So, sure why not, let’s talk about Jungwon. :)

Something about him just makes me want to do Show and Tell. Like, present him to the class as a pet, curiosity, or marvel. Because I feel he’s so pretty and full of talent, it should be self-evident, leaving nothing for me to really say besides, “Here’s Jungwon.”

I love that you caught his dancing right away. After his voice, his dancing is the next thing that stood out to me during I-Land. He’s incredibly strong in his movements, I think that's why it looks 'sharp'. He's got the strongest popping skills in the group, and is also very fluid. That’s what is reminding you about Jimin with his dancing, I think.

Jungwon dances in such a way that the only right way to watch him dance, is either watching him live or on a very big screen.

The fact he can match and keep pace with Ni-ki says enough, really.

It's best to see him dancing with the rest of his team, in my opinion. It gives one a good appreciation of how well he fits into Enha. So, I'll link their MMA 2022 dance break performance, starts at 4:00. Note the imagery of having him in center for the final part of that dance break where he plays puppeteer.

Pardon my language, but that is insanity. Everything about it. I don't want to be dramatic but the fact Belift/HYBE is having a three year old group do this level of floor work and stunts in their performances is ridiculous. Remember the aerial flips Son Sungdeuk was having Jimin do for something like 3 comebacks? This is like everyone in the group doing something that requires the same focus and energy as aerial flips - everybody in the team, all the time. The talent in that group is mad. The way Belift is moving with them has me a bit worried. I don't want to say scared but it comes close, because of how young they are.

Anyway, I digress.

His dancing is phenomenal and I'm happy to provide more examples, but it's probably best if we end here today. :)

ok I've been sleeping on Fablehaven but I'm getting through a chapter or two during lunch and I have several things to say about this part (chapters 7&8)

I think about the 'blowing bubble for the fairies' scene all the time. enrichment in their enclosure literally

I forgot that Stan just casually understands the fairy language? how did he learn it? did he take a class lol. Also do all the fairies know English?

I don't ship Kendra/Bracken but I do have to say she started off the whole 'loving unicorns' thing all the way back in book 1. so good for her ig

Seth capturing and accidentally transforming the fairy + the fairies' retaliation is an absolutely perfectly executed plot point. Like 1) it's a good bridge between the low-stakes first half and and the high-stakes second half. It defines the stakes and illustrates the potential consequences of breaking rules, laying through groundwork for the turning point at the summer solstice. And like the concept of using magic by interacting with natural laws. AND AT THE SAME TIME it increases the tension and directly relates to the climax by forcing them to untie one of Muriel's knots. Fantastic introduction to that plotline. (I say introduction even though we've already met Muriel and her rope because its here where we learn the significance of the knots and the risk of her being set free.) Literally this part of the plot perfectly sets up basically everything that follows AND YET IT DOESN'T FEEL FORCED! Like of course Seth would catch a fairy he's the perfect combination of competent and stupid to move things forward. A+ character.

"Hush Seth. You've lost the ability of speech." iconic line for some reason

The 'acting according to their nature' magical creatures vs. 'more agency + more consequences' humans and the spectrum in between is one of the most interesting things about this series to me. Like how Stan points out that fairies love themselves and imps hate themselves but "their personalities remain the same—shallow and self-absorbed." absolutely fascinating implications...and how later there's the more "intelligent" creatures like centaurs and demons and how they do have more agency but are also trapped by their nature idk it just makes me go a little insane. And like how Lena prefers to be a human now but when she's a naiad she prefers to be a naiad and how that's echoed by the changing nature of dragons when they take human form and dfghjk I'm getting ahead of myself

The dichotomy of Muriel being a creepy old lady in a gross shack but speaking very smoothly and politely. A+

Isnt kakao worst than hybe?? What happens kko becomes the major shareholder of sm?? Which is the better choice? Kko or hybe?

Noone can tell, really. Even the business analytics say different things.

Kakao is a platform company, so it isn't interested in meddling with how SM produces music and manages idols as long as SM succeeds and gives them money. Right now Kakao representatives promise to side with the SM 3.0 plan. Kakao will get exclusive rights to music distribution and concert tickets. This raises concern in many. I think Chris Lee already said in the past that the contract will be temporal, like with any distributor. We'll see about that. The main goal in having SM seems to be connected to Kakao Entertainment future development. Somehow SM will make it possible to put this company on the open market (sell shares).

In the beginning Kakao will be under investigation and observation, so I don't think anything bad will happen in a few upcoming years.

Kakao seems to do shady things, however, I doubt very much other big companies don't do the exact same. As I said, LSM would have sold the company in any case. Don't believe Hybe stans who say Hybe is super transparent, they also do undercover agreements and hidden bribes.

Personally, I agree that Kakao is the lesser of the two devils. Acquiring SM was personal for Bang PD. In his desire to show that he is smarter and better he could have changed a lot of things. And chances are, not for the better. He hasn't proved yet that he can repeat the success of BTS. Many fans support TXT and Enhypen because they are BTS's "little brothers". NewJeans and LeSerrafim are concept groups. They rose to the stardom thanks to smart promotion and a big budget but will they last? Are these idols capable of maturing into stars on their own? The second most successful group under Hybe is Svt, and Bang PD has nothing to do with it.

In my book, it is better to have two competing systems that produce different types of groups and approach the same problems differently. This way whatever the obstacle, there is a higher chance at least one finds a solution.

Kakao is also better for Doyoung, lol. He is a self-called pink-blood, afterall.

Billy & Skull & Matt and their gaggle of very powerful children makes me giggle and I love ‘em.

Tommy: lol yep. They wanted to make her so much worse and chickened out at the last second. So I took a page from Amanda Waller in Batman beyond but made it worse. That might be the way to get into Tommy and Matt’s good books here, for Rita. Banish the bitch who turned their son into a weapon. Ricky is doing his best and he’s a sweetheart and he and his brother deserve all the hugs!

Trini: I knew you’d love it. It ends up as the most stable of his pairings but it starts in the most chaotically hilarious way

Jason: Jason and Matt settling into a life together and having a kid like this just gives me the warm fuzzies. They deserve it.

Zack: given power rangers, something convoluted that probably makes sense in context. I just thought of a girl like that being snarked at by a talking sword and had to accept that I couldn’t see her not challenging the damn thing. And Saba likes feisty rangers. Zack doesn’t talk to Saba; he’s not doing this again with that sword. Matt’s a green and furthermore Dragon, and can’t help it.

Sharkie; glad you love the Easter eggs~

Gavin is doing his best, and his siblings are absolutely going to help rescue him. He doesn’t deserve this, and they’re not going to just abandon their brother, they love him.

Marleau’s kind of a garbage person. I do think there’s someone for her but lol, none of these guys. They’re just too prickly to get along with her well. Marcel and Matt are happy, and yea, the stories are gonna be fun~ he’s probably got a lot of “wait WHAT” moments coming.

Stan: ah. So quick thing with name. Some versions of the Odyssey have Odysseus named “Ulysses”. This was the version I read in school. Mentally I’m always having to record scratch and remember Odysseus is also what the character is known as. But; The Ulysses novel was taught in my school district in senior year. I don’t know if it’s still being taught to seniors, but that’s probably where they both read the book. Or they read an odyssey with Ulysses. Any option works here, thoufh I was going off of the odyssey, hence why he’s a wanderer. Terrible pun I know.

Luckily, neither. I like thinking it’s one of the many many sentai teams that hasn’t been adapted yet. Neither Tommy nor Andros has anything to do with Ulysses. Though his personality is a little bit more Andros, just less of an uptight prick when he’s in his twenties, which is when he gets the Color. He kind of has to learn how to be a leader, but -gestures at Jack and Rocky and Mack and Nick- almost as valid of a reason for a Red to pick someone.

(However if I had to make a team for him, and I’m not against it, it’d be an original team with ancient heroes as the theme, and a god as a mentor and the one who assigned and made the morphers. I’d maybe trust Thor as mentor, he seems somewhat competent.)

Violet: ah, I couldn’t decide which one so it’s more “any point in the times he’s a moron” it doesn’t matter when I don’t think. He’s getting slapped if she’s in the room for more than five minutes with him.

Myrtle and Violet are both plants, and colors based off of those plants. Myrtle green is gorgeous, I’d paint my house it. I also just like the name, and the plant, so it’s perfect~. She might yet become a green ranger, if would be funny XD she tempts fate a little too much and next thing you know-here she is. She’d be the most exhausted ranger ever, with a lot of dry snark.

Tyrian is a tragedy waiting to happen, Violet is absolutely sending someone to the hospital with a crowbar because what were you thinking giving an unstable rare color to a TEN YEAR OLD. Matt’s not letting his kid go, and Tyrian’s going to be really scared by the sobbing and protectiveness. He’s too young to realize what he’s getting into.

Kimberly Hart:

Kelson Hart. Aged 21. Older Twin brother to Kira Hart. Kim’s a single parent, raised her kids mostly on the run after Matthew died when they were four, but she and Matt never got married. More of a friends with benefits thing, off and on until she got pregnant with twins. Kelson has nothing to do with his family. Intergalactic diplomat at 21. Does not live on earth, but shows up every Christmas. He is not associated with any color. He blames power rangers for a lot of his family and planet problems actually. He loves his mom and sister and family, but he can’t bypass their glaringly massive differences in opinions.

Kira, aged 21, younger twin sister to Kelson, green ranger on SPD B Team. She’s often her brothers body guard when he’s on earth for official business, but they bicker constantly when they actually speak to each other outside of work. He blames the power rangers for everything, she thinks he’s an idiot. The reason Kim was on the run in the first place was an unreformed Zedd heard about the kids and as Matt used to work for him, decided those kids were his, actually. As payment. Matt died killing Zedd. That wasn’t power rangers fault, that was Zedd’s fault.

Billy Cranston;

When Billy loses his ranger status and goes to work for Grace, Matt is also there as the green ranger. Billy keeps his distance for a while; the guy is more or less a massive dick. Especially over something that wasn’t Billy’s fault. Billy’s also not taking pot shots at his friends or Zordon over it with Matt. They start dating after the War, and Matt’s final betrayal. More because he finally wore Billy down, but Billy had a good time hanging out with him again. And then both of them had the rude realization at the same time of “I am attracted to this man-fuck he noticed-oh he’s into it” which snowballed. They adopted one kid, and had another via help from alien technology mixed with a little magic. Nora, aged 26, is a professional hockey player. Matt decided he was going to support her sport even if it wasn’t his sport. Billy quickly developed a love of hockey at one of her events when she was little. Mostly because this game is ridiculous. Though he does worry about her on the ice. A lot. They adopted her when she was five, and she’s loud and enthusiastic and very rarely is she ever sad or genuinely upset. Her opinion on things is mostly “be friendly at it or challenge it to a fight” and generally speaking the options work enough she’s never needed to figure out other plans of action. She met her wife during a game. She’s from an opposing team. Nora gave her a concussion; she knocked Nora’s front teeth out. This was par for the course and they bonded in hospital. Billy’s still trying to figure out HOW. Matt thinks it’s hilarious. Is the green dragon ranger. She is legitimately feared by most and can solve most problems without suiting up. The threat is enough.

Their other child is Abner. He’s socially transitioning, he’s 18. He wants to be a writer. He and his sister have a very loving if slightly antagonistic relationship. When Abner came out to her, Nora’s response was “well now you don’t need to steal my clothes. Give them back” which lead to an argument but not the one Abner was expecting. They negotiated the clothing situation. Abner’s not giving back a pair of boots; they look way too good on him. Matt and Billy both support him. Matt sometimes slips up with name, however he’s quick to correct himself. Billy helped Abner choose his name, and was the first person he came out to. Abner is a little self conscious about his looks, and about his public image. More in regards to if he’s going to make his family look bad. Like Matt he tends to brood and focus on negative details way too much. Like Billy he tends to strive for perfection and his vocabulary makes it hard for people to understand him.

Eugene Skullovitch;

Matt dives head first into the villain persona, and is happily doing so. He's thriving. Until he's forced into an ultimatum; save Bulk and Skull from certain death by the hands of Goldar, or vanquish the Solar Rangers. Against his better judgment, he saves Bulk and Skull. Skull, unfortunately for timing wise, had said he'd kiss whoever saved their lives minutes before Matt saved them. He's a man of his word, but he also punched him in the mouth immediately after. Matt's confused as hell. So instead of chasing after Kim, begins chasing after Skull because what was THAT. This leads to a very weird redemption arc because Matt has realized 2 things; he likes being kissed by Skull and he does not want Skull mad at him anymore. Cut to fifteen years later; they've got a kid of their own and no actual idea how they got there really. But, they're happy, don't hate each other's guts, their kid's thriving, it's all good. The entire empire of evil absolutely hates them though and Matt somehow managed to get himself on the shit list of Thor. As long as he doesn't go out while it's thunderstorming he should be fine.

Their son is ten, his name is Jude Cook. Jude is one of the weirdly luckiest kids alive. He's survived an insane amount of attempts on his life, falls, kidnappings, and things he should otherwise not survive. His parents have stopped asking how. Loki helped give them a son, which is partly why Thor's pissed, so they've at this point accepted demigod baby is just gonna do what a demigod baby do. It's probably for the best. Spike's his older brother, and is training with Loki to be some sort of spirit of shapeshifting mischief. They both love causing mild trouble. Like Skull, Jude's got a fear of flying which makes things a little interesting. Skull's got his sons and his partner on a very very strict promise; if the shenanigans could cause an enemy of something power, walk away. Walk far away. Neptune exists. We don't want to get on the bad side of Neptune.

in a tangential version, Billy coparents with the two, and studies demigod ten year old, and deals with the Norse gods being in his business. At the very least nobody's been sucked into Ares' prison jar, so that's good.

*Bonus Poly of Billy Cranston, Matt Cook, and Eugene Skullovitch has all above children mentioned. They live in a large house, Eugene's a famous rockstar and restaurant chain owner, and they actually use every room in said house. In this version they met via Matt asking the only person he knew with experience in bdsm for some help with his newly realized kinks; Skull's payment was pizza nights and then Billy got dragged in because he was certain Matt was abusing Skull, but realized it was fine, actually. And fun.

Tommy Oliver;

Tommy and Matt did not really like each other at the beginning. Matt blames Tommy for so so much, but can't do anything about it, and Tommy's missing Dragon Green something terrible and dealing with massive amounts of PTSD for related but different reasons than Matt. Rita trapped them together in a gladitorial area of the Dark Dimension, and Tommy and Matt managed to talk to each other and get into an understanding. When they started dating, it was actually Grace who saw an opportunity, not Rita. But it’d be three more years before she could enact the plan. She didn’t tell Terona, and she was intending to eventually get every coin as well, for a full set.

Verdun Cook is 24, he’s the green dragon ranger, and he’s never met his dads. He’s a top agent for protection of earth. He thinks his parents gave him up to Grace. They think he died in infancy, an unfortunate complication in how he was made. They also think the dragon dagger was destroyed as well, around the same time. When parents and son finally meet, Tommy and Matt are furious. Billy’s furious. Terona's furious. He got Verdun to Tommy and Matt when he found out, even. Everyone’s furious. Matt and Tommy have Verdun live with them to acclimate to civilian life, and get used to being a person. His entire life has been as a weapon; he’s trying to very rapidly learn how to be human. It’s not like he was a success in the program either; the plan was a whole team of legacy rangers in their parents Colors, and he was the only one they could get.

Currently the only people allowed to mess with Tommy and Matt’s DNA is Billy and the Aquitarans and, hilariously, Zedd. He only made a clone. He was very transparent about what he was intending for the clone. Tommy knows where the clone is. He DIDN’T know where his son was, that he was alive, what Grace was intending or what he was doing. He and Matt are in agreement; If they had to chose they’d choose Zedd with their DNA.

When they thought their biological son had died; they adopted. Ricky is fifteen, not associated with a color, and is trying to get used to this with along with their dads. Ricky really is trying to be nice as well, but his overenthusiasm and attempts at bonding are often coming off too strong and borderline antagonistic. He doesn't mean to be. But the bright side is Ricky’s got someone to hang out with. And better yet, Verdun knows nothing about video games, pop culture, or really anything. So. Who wants to watch Star Wars? Ricky's got mixed feelings about his brother, but they're ranging from sad to excited, there's nothing jealousy related. Their dads are awesome, and he's sad Verdun never got to grow up with their dads. And he's excited to be able to have fun with his brother. Ricky is very excitable, and works on the school newspaper. He does volleyball, and has goals to be valedictorian when he graduates. Friendly, upbeat, can sometimes take things too far, but he tries to make those moments right.

They’re all making up for lost time with Verdun. It’s long overdue. At least both kids get along.

Trini Kwan;

Trini smacked sense into him after the upteenth pity party. She also forced him to come along for a mission in space with the Solar Rangers. He wanted to be let in on the whole thing? Fine! They could do that! Welcome to space Matt, everyone you meet is going to die or kill you! Have fun!

After, he put the dagger up, and he and Trini actually talked about what happened on the moon. She also retired from being a ranger, and they focused on taking a page from Bulk and Skull; being helpful as civilians. Matt asked Trini to marry him, and Trini said no. They made a game of it for a few years before she finally did say yes, when they were both financially stable.

They have Minh, and do foster parenting. Currently fostering JJ Oliver, due to unforeseen events leading to both Tommy and Kat unable to care for their kid for the time being. It’s hard being s foster family, but it’s nice being able to see the kids go back to their parents or move on to hopefully better situations. Matt’s at peace, and Trini is too. Trini is a plane mechanic; Matt is a fireman.

Zack Taylor;

During everything Zack and Matt were friends with benefits, though Matt tended to use Zack as an emotional scapegoat as well. Zack finally had enough after a bit, and told Matt either he got his head out of his ass or they weren’t continuing. He was serious, too, and Matt got left in the lurch for a little while before actually looking at himself long and hard and deciding whether or not his grudge was worth losing Zack again. It wasn’t. His parents loved Zack, Kira loved Zack, and most importantly he loved Zack. He came out to his parents and family, and then put in the effort to get over himself to get Zack back. One daughter by surrogate parent, and Matt owes Kim big time. She’s made it clear though. This was for Zack. He gets this, and accepts he and Kim are probably never even going to be friends. His and Zack’s daughter is Layla Cook-Taylor. Layla is sixteen, tiny firecracker of positivity. She has her low moments, but she’s never down for long. She likes swimming and playing guitar. She dances with Zack in dance classes and Matt adores her so so much. She’s frank and earnest and tries her best. She doesn’t give up easily if ever. White ranger. Saba loves her, too. Yes Matt has gotten in arguments with the uppity dagger why do you ask?

Jason Lee Scott;

Getting with Jason felt a little like leaning how to breathe again. Jason came home and Matt quickly got into sparring with him every weekend, like old times. It devolved into a lot of pent up rage related sex. And then all of that was gone…and there were two angry hurt teenagers who didn’t know how to be healthy about love or sex. Cut to fifteen years later, Jason’s a mechanic, Matt’s an accountant. And nothings changed. In between then and now, Jason had a kid. He doesn’t remember who the mother was, and anyway Diego Scott was left on his porch basically. He’s four. Matt likes the way Diego likes piggy backs. And dinosaurs and zombies. Matt likes how whole he feels with Jason and Diego. It’s pretty late in life, but he’s willing to make a go of this, if Jason is willing. And so far, he is. Diego keeps the two on their toes, being ready to get into the thick of everything and anything. But he's four, that's typical, and he's Jason's. And Matt thinks the kid's the best.

Sharkie;

Surprisingly the two manage to click and gel together really well. Three kids, two boys and a girl. Lexie Cook aged 24, Gavin Cook aged 19, and Quincy Cook, aged 17. Sharkie and Matt bonded over being left behind by their friends, though Sharkie doesn’t have any ill will to Bulk or Skull. Stuff happens. The first time he morphed he did it to impress Sharkie and she laughed in his face. He then spent the rest of his life trying to impress her, and stumbled into becoming a better person in the process.

Lexie Cook works as a radio host for a popular music station. She has a popular segment where she runs down the monster of that week and ranks it’s strengths and weaknesses and how to avoid it while putting out a prediction for the next week’s. She does this in between her music playlist, and she’s been right in her predictions a few times. Starts and ends her show saying hi or goodbye to her parents. She has a huge sweet tooth and will do anything for sweets. Lately her brother Gavin's been Off, so she's been adding him in the hi and goodbye, and a 'hang in there bud' as well. not associated with a color

Quincy “Flea” Cook is one of the punks at school, and one of the comedy duo. He's antagonistic to the 'goody twerps' Matt just knows is the power rangers, and neither he nor Sharkie really know if they should step in or just let this play out. Currently letting it play out. Quincy’s grown a lot since the current team's shown up, and he's gotten braver, less self serving, and a lot more noble. Matt's just made sure he's well aware he needs to get out of a situation if buildings are falling. No exceptions. He can grab the person closest to him but he is staying out of the area. Sharkie is making sure he also knows when to stop antagonizing, and know who and what all monsters are. Quincy is in love with art but he's got a Reputation. He's gotten a reputation for being spraypainting sides of buildings. His murals are always well done, but with a sense of humor, and often calling out the villains. Something's up with his older brother though, so he's been trying to figure out what. not associated with a color

Gavin Cook's currently working for the villains. Mind controlled, he's not really even interested in power rangers, normally. Evil ranger sixth ranger, he's been living with a roommate since he was eighteen in an apartment near his parents house and sister's apartment (the reasoning being this is his first try at being properly independent, and if he needs help they're near him to assist if need be). They don't spend enough time with him to know anything other than he's not acting right. Quincy's actively trying to figure out what's wrong though, and Gavin's dreading the day he's going to be told to attack his own family members. He's the villainous Maximum Ranger, and he's waiting for the good rangers to free him and his roommate so he can get back to not caring about power rangers. and hug his family. and go get therapy because yea...he needs to Unpack This. When not a mindcontrolled villain, Gavin's pretty chill. He lets Quincy hang out to get away from their parents, and usually is playing music while watching his brother. He really doesn't give a damn about power rangers, could care less. Matt was one, and that's fine, he's not anymore and Gavin doesn't care about the legacy. He works at the local coffeeshop, which is where the good rangers love hanging out. He hates spying on them, he used to love the atmosphere, and he knows his dad and his job is why he's currently here. All his parents know is he went missing for a week and came back, well, off. They're there when he asks for help, the kicker being, right now Gavin literally cannot.

Marleau Eskin;

He got with her in high school to get back at his former friends and ex girlfriend. It was a joke, turns out he’s the joke. But he and Marcel don’t talk to Marleau anymore. Matt’s a sports reporter, and Marcel’s a professional esport gamer in his late 20’s. Matt sees his kid on the weekends for weekly lunches and check ins. Had to take a second when Marcel said he’d started dating Minh Kwan. Had to decide if the anger was worth it. It wasn’t. He’s not talking to the group still, but Marcel’s got his blessing, and he's fine with Marcel seeing Minh. That has to count for something. Matt was able to prove without a shadow of a doubt that Marleau was a negligent parent, and had left their kid in frankly dangerous situations when he was young. Marcel broke his arm left alone at a park, and Matt was never more happy or enraged. But, it lead to Marcel being genuinely happy as the son of a single parent, so Matt's happy to let him live his life. Also somewhat relieved Minh or her family heard the last name 'Cook' and is still letting this happen. Marcel is not associated with a color.

Stan Skullovitch;

They were kidnapped together and replaced with putties. They were tortured together, and formed a trauma bond. Stan had enough sense to say 'no' to a relationship with someone who 1) hated his brother and 2) was still in highschool. However they kept running into each other over the years. When they did get together, it was when Matt had his head out of his ass a little, and was in a stable job. Stan was a singer at a lounge, and the trauma attraction had settled into a healthier flavor. Everyone's got their opinions on the two getting together but it seems okay right now? Rita as Mystic Mother used magic to give them a child because as Matt pointed out in a confrontation with her; she kind of owed them big time. Ulysses "Bones" Skullovitch is twelve, and kind of a natural wanderer. It's not unusual for him to leave the house at dawn and come back around dinner time with all sorts of things in his pockets. He's not loud, but he's not shy. Prefers watching than acting, though will step up if need be. Stan finds it hard to not worry about him, but Spike and Spike's friends keep an eye on Bones while keeping their distance. He's alright, he's just the kind of person that likes being by himself playing. However he might be getting some friends, and Matt's starting to wonder if power rangers is a genetic thing. Bones will be a red ranger when old enough.

Violet Arias;

she slapped him. Then yelled at him, then apologized because his cheek was swelling and her nail had accidentally caused a cut on his eyelid. He had to wear an eye bandage for two weeks and she gave him flowers. Then he apologized for, well. everything. After that they started dating, balancing his ranger status with school and her trying to be okay with it. They've been in hiding with their kids since Zedd put a price on Matt's head. Myrtle and Tyrian are fifteen and ten, respectively. They don't know their dad was a green ranger and still is when called to be so, Matt's not going to put them in danger over this. As much as he can help, anyway.

Myrtle Arias plays the trumpet in the school marching band. She's extremely good at coded cyphers, and wants to be the president of the united states one day. She's also on the chess team. She has no opinions on the power rangers or the monsters that seem to constantly show up. She's just trying to get through school without being shoved in a locker. Hard to connect to her dad, who was a popular kid, so it's easier to talk to and connect to her mom. is not associated with a color.

Tyrian Arias learned his name's the actual name for the color royal purple (named after the snails whose shells are used for the pigments) and decided he was going to make this his entire personality. He is a ten year old sixth ranger, he is not hiding this. His only saving grace is that he is constantly telling so many tall tales his parents aren't entirely sure if he's telling the truth (and if he is there will be WORDS with whoever gave him Purple), and everyone else thinks he's just an exceptionally imaginitve kid. Matt is...hoping the extra excitable new ranger is not, in fact, his son. However, deep down he knows it's Tyrian and he's freaking out.

spoilers for what if...?

some quick thoughts on the first Marvel What If...? episode that are almost all Bucky related big surprise:

i froth at the mouth at any small moment of pre-ws!Bucky like a stranded survivor of a shipwreck. yes pls all of it, i need more. my desire to know who traumatized characters were pre-trauma is like an un-quenchable thirst.

that being said, i'm loving the idea the Bucky was just...a big fucking himbo. a nerdy silly himbo. there's nothing more satisfying than a super pretty competent person wowing you with some big time dork energy.

his lines were so groan worthy which is why i loved them. looking back it's a pretty obvious choice to make Bucky Barnes pre-Winter Soldier just Bucky Barnes from the comic books. he tells bad jokes, he's a damsel in distress, he's there for a reaction shot or two, and best of all he's got the worst one-liners.

my kingdom for Bucky of today going back to his bad one liners, honestly i would pay marvel to have Bucky throw a knife in someone's face, blood is everywhere, and he just goes, "knife to meet you." (Sam is floored. he goes through the 5 stages of grief in ten seconds and ends up laughing so hard his lungs hurt. redwing has it recorded and sam revisits it when he needs to)

the part where Steve gets back into the Hydra Smasher and falls on his face is peak stevebucky tho. Bucky is unconcerned, makes light of it, and there's even some light teasing. i have to highlight this for the purpose of Bucky's characterization in fanfic in terms of how he treats Steve, especially pre-serum Steve: he doesn't baby him. he doesn't mother-hen or overprotect Steve. he knows Steve is tough, he's spent years picking him up off of alleyway pavements, he's not going to act like a helicopter mom.

which i really appreciate because i'm tired of the treatment of Bucky as not also being a reckless kid in this war. Steve and Bucky don't have the dynamic of the Reasonable Adult and their Troublesome Kid i've seen sometimes in fic. they're both hooligans. Bucky comes off as the more cautious one sure, but it's just slightly. and that very slight difference gets overblown sometimes which feels disingenuous to a character that's in his 20s (like do you know bros in their 20s,,,do you?? they're still trying to run up walls and do backflips. they still think they're invincible. 20 year old men are the stupidest people on the planet. and i can say that as a man almost 30) and, by all accounts, ran mayhem in Brooklyn right next to his best friend.

just. don't forget Bucky Barnes is a young stupid pretty himbo okay?

speaking of disingenuous characterizations: what was that hetero bullshit with Peggy being more distraught over Steve's 'death' than Bucky????

i feel this righteous anger burning over this, which i'm sure will come to a bigger rant at some point but really? fucking really?

this is it. this is what straight people do. this is the straight agenda.

this isn't even just about Steve and Bucky they do this kind of bullshit all the time in media: character 1 has a long-lasting deep friendship with character 2. character 1 has a romantic subplot with character 3. character 1 and 3 barely know each other. character 1 dies and character 3 is somehow more distraught about this than character 2.

i fully expected Bucky to start trying to climb down the mountain to find Steve but nope!

he's just 'oh nooo~ he ded. whelp lets go hoes'

while the woman who knew Steve for maybe a few months is doing the Darth Vader 'noooo' moment

this does not make any character, story, or emotional logical sense. there's no fucking reason for this bullshit than blatant homophobia.

like fucking fine, lets not see Steve and Bucky interact in any way because I WONDER WHY

but even better

lets have Bucky not really emote over Steve's death, because a. that's gay, we don't want people to think we write gay characters (don't worry marvel we don't) so two men can't care or mourn for each other onscreen. and b. we've got our hetero romance to sell

Peggy Carter is a professional military woman. with experience.

Bucky Barnes is some kid from Brooklyn whose been fighting in a war he's been drafted in for maybe some handful of months.

but sure. yeah. his childhood best friend dying. he's the one whose going to have the professional cool head in this moment.

and it's the PROFESSIONAL MILITARY WOMAN whose going to forget her job and training and need to be pulled from grieving BY THE MAN WHO'S BEST FRIEND JUST 'DIED'

it's the homophobia that betrays the logic of the characters that really fucks me up y'know?

if you're betraying the honest emotional reactions of story and character because you're afraid of those things being perceived as gay: you're homophobic.

i would die twenty times just to be able to see more of Dominic Cooper's Howard Stark. he's just the fucking best. earnest and cute and a bit of a mad scientist and i fucking adore him

i'll even take 5 minute vinaigrettes of the antics they'd be up to. two playboy nerds together is just a magical event, don't waste it! i can't believe i've been sleeping on this dynamic it's too good.

all frustrations aside, it was really cool to see Peggy Carter as Captain Britain. she's a great character and i love her so much. every moment she was legit thrashing n*zis with her big butch arms was thrilling and satisfying.

that truck shield flip is still doing things to me...

honestly upset that the sword Peggy was wielding wasn't a Zemo easter egg like i was hoping it was 😩

AKISE ARU... I don't think I'm all that smart about him but also I AM. My toxic trait is that every Akise stan has to be my friend so they can acknowledge me as a fellow tireless Akise stan 🔪 Sorry 😔

He got done very dirty by the fans who hated him for competing with Yuno O_O Or literally just for being gay O_O

The wasted potential and screentime thing was really interesting to think about :3c Okay so personally while I acknowledge that it wasn't necessarily going to improve the quality of Mirai Nikki, I still would have loooooved more Akise time... There was not enough for me <\3 He is a really fun character with his intelligence and everything. I think I esp would have liked it if his relationship with like... ANYONE was built up a little more. He can get along with anyone (who isn't Yuno lol), but I would have liked to see stronger feelings in there too. Though I guess the Akise-Yuki and Akise-Yuno feelings ARE already p strong...

But anyway. The way I feel like there was actually wasted potential. Is because Akise never really divorced his identity from Yuki's. I'm obsessed with his obsessive love for Yuki, so all of that should be kept in, but he really just died for him and because of him, and then that was it. Then in Redial he comes BACK 😲 but then he's p much all about Yuki again... Like I said, not bad, I love it, but it shouldn't END that way. I think it's mentioned somewhere that he becomes a famous detective after Redial, which rules, but it's like... Yeah, he moved on. But WHY did he move on? It kind of seems like he moved on because he Acknowledged that Yuno and Yuki were just so Destined to be together~~ But when did Yuno prove that? ...Very controversial point about the show I know 😅

But regardless of whether or not she proved it, it would have been nice if Akise had also said something about his OWN new feelings. He says, "I'll just tell you one thing, Gasai. I was jealous of you. Say hello to him for me." Alas, that was still a bit unsatisfying to me. Because

1. Akise spends the whole time denying that he is gay. I generally love gay-and-in-denial characters, but this execution rubbed me the wrong way. I guess it just feels too plausible that Esuno actually thinks there's a diff between being gay and loving someone truly.....

And 2. It's not explained or explored why Akise expands his focus from making Yukiteru god to saving everyone. He's madly in love with Yuki one second and then doesn't really care that much the next, and also possibly is crushing on Tsubaki instead...? Just a little internal monologue about that, just a little closure on that, would have been nice.

Goldy I never thought I would reach out to any Jikook blog but after your last post I have to. I am an east asian american and trans. I have never spoken on this issue, commented or posted about this. I am a Jikook supporter but sometimes Jikook supporting blogs don't feel like the friendliest place. I want to thank you for changing my opinion on that. It is an insult to BTS to say Jikook don't know they seem gay or that they don't know what gay looks like. It is an insult to fans like me to say it would be OK to do the things they do if they were cisgendered straight men. I personally saw a few people say or dance around this and they got intimidated by big blogs for it. I would never name names because I beleive in free speech and the right of people to express themselves, as long as it isn't hate speech. Supporting lgbt people and making sure they don't feel endangered is MORE IMPORTANT THAN STANNING A KPOP BAND and I say this as a 4 year long bts and Jikook stan. So many people don't want to touch this issue and I understand why.

But thank you for supporting ACTUAL lgbt people as well as bts and showing stubborn people that BTS mean gay rights when they say gay rights.

I've been reading it over and over for the past two days and each time I feel humbled by it. Thanks so much for sharing this with me.

I think the era of the obsessed 'kids' and '13 year old shippers' in this space is coming to an end. I think it's time for a more nuanced mature conversation on what it means to ship and stan our faves in today's sociopolitical climate.

Let's intellectualize shipping and use it as a vehicle for social change not just pleasure. Sabotaging political hashtags is a start. Trending and donating to BLM is equally important. Fighting for gay rights and recognition is the next step and a natural progression from here- and about damn time!

Gone are the days where celebrities and idols were immune to accountability and personal responsibility. We live in a world where everyone is required to be converstant in and sensitive to social issues. Awareness is woven into our collective consciousness and for some of us we cannot divorce that from our pleasure receptors.

Hate to quote my pastor but, 'As a kid, I spoke, thought and reasoned like a kid. As I grew up, chilee darling, I put my ghetto ways aside. You feel me?' Lol. Yea, my pastor hood like that. Lol.

The fact of the matter is, BTS has a higher mature demographics now. Majority of us grew with them, if not past them. They are not seventeen anymore, Jin is almost thirty, the youngest in the group is past twenty three and majority of their fanbase are breaching Young Adult well into Adulthood and beyond.

We simply cannot view them with the same lens anymore. If we did, we would be infantilizing them if not enabling them.

We ought to be able to have certain conversations that reflect our age, hearts, backgrounds, experience, values and beliefs.

We can't sit behind our television sets and smart phone screens in this day and age and assume BTS sat through a performance like this and did not for a second think about what it meant, why the crowd cheered at certain moments or even understand the impact, message and intent behind it- especially not when Halsey, an openly bisexual woman and advocate for LGBTG rights is an acquaintance of thiers.

I don't know how a fraction of this fandom can assume BTS would have a collaboration of this nature and not know anything about the gay rights discourse or what queer baiting is or not consider how their actions may or may not be contributing to the marginalization of persons as these- to not have agency and personal responsibility or empathy.

JK cannot stan a gay artist such as Troye Sivan and divorce his music from his sexuality because it flows from it. Not when Troye has openly spoken about the struggles he went through as a closeted gay man, coming out and how that affected his mental health.

JK knows what gay is, he is aware of the struggles queer people face on a daily. His decision to cover, license and recommend songs by this artist is a deliberate act coming from a place of being informed on the matter.

Jimin knows. RM knows. Suga knows.

BTS cannot prepare a speech like this while oblivious to the plight of the LGBTQ plus community. I refuse to believe that simply because it's not true. Anyone who says otherwise is a scammer. Lol.

And I think they are intelligent enough to have cognisance of the fact majority of the world view certain aspects of their home culture as problematic and non-progressive and that this same world is watching them and what they do in this space matters.

They are part of the conversation. And it's in their interest to present themselves as queer a queer friendly band and company by distinctifying themselves from these 'traditional' Kpop bands.

I believe they know that being woke gives them a competitive advantage as MCs and advocates for the youth in today's world.

I believe they are aware certain things in their 'fan service culture' doesn't fly in the space they compete in and want to compete in. They are competing and rubbing shoulders with top LGBTQ plus advocates, sharing seats with them at awards, standing next to them- they best to look sharp.

It's obtuse for anyone to fall on the 'culture' rhetoric to excuse certain behaviors of their idols when actual queer people from and within that same culture fight against it.

Most S. koreans I know and have come across complain about their 'culture' and some even harbor strong resentments against this whole fanservice culture.

Holland, an openly gay Idol from South Korea, has equally spoken out against the 'fan service' culture prevalent within Kpop on several occasions and laments how it depoliticizes queerness and affects actual queer people within S.K.

And isn't it funny that the same conservative Christian population who strongly oppose homosexuality in S.K often lead online campaigns against Jikook for 'promoting homosexuality' because of certain fanservice and skinship they do?

If skinship is normal and fanservice is culture, why does conservative S.K keep pushing back against it? It's their culture uno?! Lmho.

Queer south Koreans and conservative Christians hate fanservice culture and yet here we are using their culture to defend it as if it's all black and white. Lmho.

Did they or did they not see South Korean's reactions to this performance by Jikook? The mixed feelings most had about it?

South Koreans are not a monolith. Their culture is nuanced like any culture. It's not static and not clear cut black and white either.

It's one thing to respect other's culture, it's another to perpetuate it in ignorance. Perpetuating their culture and being religious about it does not allow for the dynamism inherent in their culture.

Troye Sivan talked about how he'd stop in the middle of his concerts and performances upon seeing the hyper fangirls in the front row and then think to himself, 'I know they know I'm gay, so why are they still here...'

And this was before he came out.

Jikook know we know they are queer or that we think of them as queer. When Jimin talks about 'those that love me for me' he knows exactly what he is talking about or rather who he is talking to- it's not these hets I'm afraid.

Troye also talked about being privileged because he lived in a rather queer friendly neighborhood where everyone is gay and so he'd always felt safe coming out.

Isn't that what JK is doing?

Now this is a person who's without a doubt had a lot of influence on JK in his early formative years as an Idol right down to his decision to move into a much queer friendly neighborhood of Itaewon.

They know we know. Jikook is gay.

Thankfully, there are reports of a rising number of LGBTQ plus in South Korea, a lot of allies, a lot of queer folks coming out and a lot of companies opening up to working with gay idols and aspiring idols.

It's such a relief but a lot of work still needs to be done and I stand with them on behalf of Jikook and any queer folk in SK.

My sister is helping me reach out to an LGBTQ plus advocate from Seoul for an interview for my blog. If everything goes well, I'd love for her to share her thoughts on queer passing, queer baiting and fan service within Kpop and how that affects LGBTQ youth in South K.

It's a conversation I'm really passionate about and interested in.

I love me some ships, but I also love me some queer advocacy and human rights uno? Lol.

Thing is, I may quit BTS one day, but I can never quit being me. Being human. Always put the human first is my motto.

pftttttt glad it fulfilled your expectations anon i love writing half-serious todobaku pieces where they are still 50/50 strategic geniuses and emotional morons as per canon but the setting is increasingly absurd. i don't know what the context was for giant deku in that sketch but the visual was too good. date-crasher deku at it again.

as for ur prompt i do love the concept bc i live for third party pov content but i would find it v hard to get done in the prompt format bc 1) honestly a lot of the 1A students (etc) don’t have very defined personalities lol and 2) when it comes to those who do i have too much to say to do this in an hour. however i can give you some bulletpoint summaries of the BNOCs (and if you have any specific niche classmates whose take you want do let me know). with that being said...

kirishima: forever and always a supportive bestie and thus leader of the todobaku fanclub. i mean just read my fic yknow. 1000% called it on bakugous side first (and/or bakugou told him) and has been enthusiastically supportive ever since. hes a big ol romantic really and also unironically thinks todobaku is the manliest of pairings (and totally made for each other, bro!!) so hes beyond stoked when they do get together. hes one of their most comfy third wheels bc he and bakugou r very close and he and todoroki r also good friends so no one is like on uncomfortable/uneven footing and hes unfazed by the ups and downs of their relationship bc hes used to both of their antics. the secret-keeper.

i don’t have enough separate intel on the rest of the bakusquad but they’re 1) completely thrown by the revelation that after years of wheedling and trying to set bakugou up into surprise dates he is not in fact ‘work-sexual’, and to top this off is actually into todoroki of all people 2) obnoxiously supportive, as you would expect. secretly they’re all kind of defensive of bakugou’s fragile heart (citation needed) and so nervous about how the whole thing is gonna work out but when it becomes apparent todoroki does not have better sense they relax and just become excessively nosy. like to complain that bakugou and todoroki weren’t content dominating their year academically and professionally they also had to steal out 2 of the country’s most eligible bachelors, the selfish bastards.

camie: second leader of the todobaku fanclub, idc. clocks it ahead of literally anyone else in their friend group bc she just, like, got that vibe, you know? theres a multitude of equally blunt and inappropriate ways in which she addresses this vibe (calling them out in person when theyre years away from it, trying to not especially artfully orchestrate a get-together, etc) and they are all very unsuccessful. shes ‘lowkey mad bakugou stole her potential man’ but ‘finders keepers’ so once they’re past that she’s all for it since she correctly thinks they r freaks best suited to e/o and also honestly probably thinks bl is cute or something. todoroki and bakugou both endure her encouragement very long-sufferingly. big double dater energy.

yaoyorozu: not at all in the first to clock gang, bc honestly the idea she has of todoroki is still a lil idealized/inaccurate and certainly does not involve dating bakugou; the initial reveal is inevitably delivered very casually to her as she scrambles for a polite reaction. she’s kind of wary of the whole thing at face value but close scrutiny leads her to conclude they’re actually not-terrible together. upon reaching this conclusion she begins making earnest overtures towards a very confused bakugou bc she figures she may as well make the effort to get to know him better. i always hc her as having had a crush of some variety on todoroki at some point so theres probs a bit of wistfulness involved and also a far larger ‘nvm dodged that bullet’ energy bc todobaku r romantically a mess and a half. to her despair she is extremely weak to camie’s todobaku gossip.

uraraka: to everyone’s vague bewilderment, a secret todobaku stan from the get-go. you could say this is bc it leaves deku solidly open but honestly she just has similarly odd friendships with todoroki and bakugou and it’s like a persistent guilty thought of hers that they’re kind of well-suited somehow. she often tells todoroki he can do better just to wind bakugou up but would be the first to take bakugou’s side if he actually did. she really enjoys them together bc she finds somehow they’re easier to tease- it humanizes them both further to be weak to dumb emotions. she plays counsellor sometimes but like subtly bc she knows better than to give outright advice.

iida: completely blindsided by the information, also spends several months in the grips of insomnia convinced that both their friend group and japan are doomed given the inevitable dramatic breakup. then he spends a singular day hanging around them at work or something and realises that his imagined version of them as a couple was in fact completely off-base bc they’re just overly intense workaholics who are too single-focused to ever bother splitting up. also top 1 most likely friend to launch into a completely sincere defense of them and their relationship in response to like the laziest off-color paparazzi bait comment.

midoriya: where to begin honestly. he def gets weird vibes from them throughout the whole usual melodrama but 200% does not come to the right conclusions. when he finally gets the news broken to him (never gently) his brain breaks a little. it’s mainly the bakugou element bc kacchan is.. kacchan and like.. not necessarily fundamentally someone midoriya has ever imagined harboring human interest in another living person. also todoroki in a parallel way has always struck him as resoundingly disinterested in relationships mainly bc hes kind of above them. of course once he sets to theorising he can connect some dots to bakugous various jealousies over the years and also todorokis pretty open staring and wow he is not very good at connecting dots actually. anyways once he recovers from the shock i think theres a variety of ways in which he takes it bc honestly it is very weird that his best friend and his .. closest friend (?) who have always primarily interacted through or due to him now have this competing private relationship. regardless obv he is intensely supportive in like, the typical kind of overbearing midoriya way. i sometimes make it so its just one of those things that everyones cool with but also the details will always be something midoriya and bakugou do not want midoriya to know bc Awkward, vs other times i make him super cool w it to the extent that hes just overenthusiastic and todorokis all oh. sure. thanks :) while bakugou loses his shit. he does genuinely think they’re a really good fit upon reflexion, and since he’s best suited to knowing why he’s p much always correct in his assessments. its one of those things where each duo in the trio has the capacity of playing up the subject matter to the third party’s detriment, tho when todoroki is the third party he’s less embarrassed by bakudeku’s todobaku discourse and more enduring their various bizarre friendship rituals + the serious physical damage they usually precede.

also aizawa clocks them first and is like oh god please no this is going to take at least 5 years to implode and will age me 10 years in the process
