#but god not everything. when was the last time a cartoon was released with more than 10 episodes that wasn't a reboot?

I'm rewatching gravity falls and obvioiusly i'm having a blast. but because I am an insane person I rewatched season 2 first and now rewatching season 1 and I have to say I love the monster of the week episodes. I love them so much. and honestly I prefer them alot more to the plot building episodes. dont get me wrong the overarching plot and mystery is definitely part of the intrigue of the show especially when it first aired. but I am so enamored with how the show stands completely on its own as just a regular monster of the week type beat. (also how concurrent all the episodes are it is very believable that every episode happens the next week from the last while still being able to pick up the show from mostly anywhere its just spectacular)

But i just think Gravity Falls and it's overarching plot was something very novel in a children's cartoon when it was first released. Most children shows didn't have an obvious mystery hanging over the entire show to be solved where the entire show for the most part was just one big arc (the only other one I can think of around a similar time frame is ATLA but I'm sure there were others they just were the minority) .

and that made it so intriguing and unique and dont get me wrong it's still an amazing mystery show and the plot still holds strong but also we are now in a timeline where almost every show even cartoons are 10 episode long and have an over arching plot hell all the major disney channel cartoons of the last couple years (ducktales, amphibian, owl house, star vs the forces of evil even tho that last one was really only in the second season) are all plot driven shows but hey atleast even those shows have mostly adventure of the week episodes for the most part. but the only true adventure of the week cartoons I know from the last couple of years have been like big city greens and Hamster and gretel.

And like i guess what I'm trying to say (in this insane manner of mine) is bring back the adventure of the week. bring back 22 episodes where every single episode isn't trying to just push the narrative forward. Like honestly to me the best parts of gravity falls that still holds up all these years later are just dipper mabel and gruncle stan getting into some shit together.

plus the comedy is still fucking golden and some of these shots are legitimately horror movie worthy.

I'm going to talk here and not that anyone cares of course! I'm back in the DC fandom (not that I ever left, I just stopped following the comics and the characters I like for reasons that I was busy in other fandoms but I came to talk about updates and posts that I saw and read mainly here on tumblr and my god I have so much information.

My favorites are Batman/Bruce and Jason Todd/Red Hood, and a lot has changed about them, when I was following them comics it was still in the crisis? and the new 52 came and then a series of things happened until now. I don't even know what I'm talking about actually lfmao but it's more about Jason and his fandom and I read a lot of stuff here on tumblr and for subjects that I didn't even know were a thing, things that most people agree with or hate, in this part I was surprised that they hate things that I didn't know were a problem (due to the fact that I read the comics a long time ago, a lot of things I forgot or internalized to forget because they were bad) some things made me happy that it's not me who hates.

And about the fanon vs canon situation, it's a big problem in general about the characters and specifically about Jason, in his fandom this side tends to have long opinions about it. Personally I don't care if they like Jason fanon or Jason canon, that's the right thing I think that loving a character as he is and also as you wanted him to be in terms of headcanons is fine and I must admit that I saw the real problem that the character suffers entirely is because of the writer, that writer. yes now I understand why some things irritated me so much when I read before but I never got to see that it was because of the author in particular.

I'm not doing an analysis nor a post directed at anything in itself, but just what I read that changed my perspective, especially his relationships, which were something I never wanted to delve into further, that never lasted and I didn't like any of them, and in this part there is a big discussion about the fanon and canon. I'm not even going to mention the red hood and the outlaws in the original formation LFMAOO but I didn't hated in it moment what happened, I just wanted a change of everything of what was happening at that stage, I'm remembering how much I hated so much the new 52!!!

(i was forgetting, i hate that jason adaptation from the titans series is that a consensus? I didn't research it, but it must be, I hope) Anyway, and I also found things that left me speechless and that made me laugh a lot. Honestly, I love Jason and all his baggage, I don't have much online interaction with his fandom, only with my friends and them on like other characters more than Jason.

Finally, I just want to thank blog @dailyjasontodd who made a post about the comics (I love your work admins). When I was just starting out as a Jason fan, a lot of stuff wasn't available online, and it was a bit difficult for me to find the content, especially because of the language barrier. Now it's all easy, and that's what I like!

Funfact; I always wanted to watch the Batman: under the Red Hood cartoon, and I never found it in good quality when it was released, much less in my language and I watched it yesterday. I loved it so much this animation lives on in me (if anyone hates it, I'm sorry, but it was the only thing I didn't find anyone hating, hahaha.

Beetlejuice Beetlejuice Review

I. Love. Beetlejuice. It is, no joke, possibly my favorite movie of all time. Definitely my favorite Burton film, although I am a decent fan of his (was more so when I was younger.) I’ve admittedly not seen all of the cartoon (I enjoy it fine enough), but I did see the musical earlier this year (I loved it!) And this is all coming from someone who was too scared to watch this movie until the age of 12 or so, but once I did, I was obsessed!

I’ve been joking since the first reveal teasers that the release of the Beetlejuice sequel was the only thing keeping me going, but it kind of was! When tickets first became available, I SNATCHED mine up. I was not going to miss this for the world, and I was insanely happy it wasn’t a midnight showing, but during the evening of the 5th. (I also chose to keep myself 100% spoiler free!)

I even got the special popcorn tin because ABSOFREAKINGLUTELY!

At the same time, I was trying really, REALLY hard to tamper my expectations. If I get my hopes up too high, I always inevitably get disappointed. And for the most part, I was NOT disappointed!

This is a solid sequel. Admittedly not an “Aliens” level sequel, not better than the first, but it’s a good continuation nonetheless. I wanted to go into details and name a few things I liked and disliked, because I had a few nitpicks. As I knew I would. Overall, as a hardcore fan, I left very happy.

(BIG SPOILERS AHEAD! PROCEED WITH CAUTION!)

Let’s start with the good!

Likes:

1. Burton went all out on the special effects. Everything looks really good and, for the most part, done with practical effects! My favorite!

2. Everyone is in full-form here. Ryder, Ortega, O’Hara, Defoe, and especially Keaton. They all had so much fun making this, and you can tell. The actors that weren’t present in the first film fit right in, esp Ortega.

3. There’s so much backstory presented on these characters. I sort of love and dislike this? Beetlejuice is somewhat better, in my opinion, the less we know about him? He’s such an enigma. It felt weird seeing what he was like when he was alive. Was he still actually named Betelgeuse? But I did appreciate the confirmation that Lydia’s mom is still alive, different from the musical.

4. Lydia doesn’t actually marry BJ. Thank god! I’m okay with their cartoon counterparts being friends, but the real thing is incredibly creepy. Especially given how traumatized Lydia seems in this movie. They even mention the “600 year” age gap. (But I did admittedly like them being forced to work together.)

5. The Netherworld, or whatever the films call it, looks AWESOME! By far my favorite thing about this movie was the creative corpses! The citizens of the Netherworld look downright gruesome! All the deaths are super creative! I would give my left arm for a Making-Of book of this movie.

Dislikes:

1. With the exception of Astrid’s beau, the love interests are pretty uninteresting. Delores has an excellent design, neat backstory, but is admittedly not fleshed out enough (pun not intended), and she barely has five lines. Rory is sort of okay, but instead of Lydia just standing up for herself and saying she didn’t want to get married, he ends up being a weak “twist” bad-guy? Boo!

2. The ending is admittedly very odd. The last movie ended so upbeat and happy and cheerful. This one ends like an interrupted night terror. I sort of left the movie going “wait, really? Roll credits? Poor Lydia!”

3. I was hoping for more reconciliation with Lydia and Deliah. Maybe taking Charles’ death seriously would have made the film more depressing, but I wanted them to have more of a Mother/Daughter bond at this point. (Maybe that’s just me. I want better step-mother representation.) It wasn’t nonexistent, I just wanted more.

4. The explanation of the Maitlands absence could have been a LOT better. Given that they were, y’know, the main characters of the first movie? It made sense that Davis and Baldwin didn’t come back, that’s not my complaint, but they could have given the audience more information about said “loophole.” At least a picture of them! (Could the actors have signed off letting them use old pictures?)

5. Finally, my personal gripe, THEY USED MACARTHUR PARK! I utterly loathe this song!

General Comments:

1. I saw some plot points coming a mile away. One did catch me off guard, though.

2. Soul Train. What a weird reference to do. 😆

3. There is SO much death in this movie. I mean, duh, but like lots of people get killed off. Though, it is sort of funny to see Deliah in a “Karen in Hell” type situation. 😆

4. Charles’ death is really creative. It allows the character to still be in the movie without [redacted] getting rehired.

5. The Shrinkhead guys are delightful. And that creepy baby gave me Dead Alive flashbacks. Very cartoonish. (I also never realized how much Beetlejuice gives me The Mask vibes.)

Overall, I completely agree with the grand majority here. It’s a solid movie, a solid sequel, and you absolutely SHOULD see it if you’re a fan, but it acts as more of a dessert to the original’s full meal. (And it USES that PG-13 rating. It’s gruesome in parts!)

The Cage is supposed to be a look behind the scenes at what happened on the other side of things while Audrey was busy explaining the concept of personal space to Wilson, if I remembee right? Also supposed to be darker and gorrier SUPER EXCITED FOR THAT

Then... in Secrets of the Machine we get teasers for B3ndy and Bendy Silent Town...

I hope B3ndy's gonna pick up on where BATDR left off, Gent taking away the Ink Machine to GOD KNOWS WHERE??? With Bendy now being out in the real world... it begs the question of who the role of big bad and smiling (traumatized, very much traumatized) will fall on... As for who we may play as.... maybe it could be this Riley Wells (hope I got the surname right) character we found out about in Secrets of the Machine? They ended up being a GENT employee so it's not completely out the question? They were employed at Joey Drew Studios before but- got fired because their ideas were too grotesque and dark for Joey's liking (EXCUSE THEM for having trauma you entrepreneur a-hole).

As for Bendy Silent Town... I feel like that game may be a look at mayhaps the genre of Bendy cartoons Riley had scripted? As I said, their ideas were dark. And what is Silent Town? A complete turn to the left at what Bendy games are. Unsure if the hand in the teaser image is Bendy's but- the char has a revolver named Alice FJFJ does that say anything? I dunno! Fjfjfj Getting to shoot cartoon bad guys in a cartoon tho? Aw heck yea! I suck at shooters but I'm willing to try my hand at one if it's Bendy

When you break all the cutouts in Secrets of the Machine, you get instakilled by the Ink Demon. Which. Deserved. I ended up doing that a lot cuz I didn't KNOW what I was supposed to do??? And destroying the cutouts was the quickest way out nfjfjc sorry Benders I promise it wasn't personal.

Anywho- yea it's been over a year YET I'M STILL NOT OVER HOW THE INK DEMON LITERALLY HAD BEEN TORTURED BY THE KEEPERS??? Like- YOU CAN'T JUST THROW THAT AT ME AND NOT EXPECT ME TO WEEP LIKE A BABY- My man's gone through literal hell even before he's been carelessly thrown into the machine "because he was imperfect" my ass, I bet the worst he ever did while in the Real world was walk around and be curious about everything while the only thing decisively threatening about him was his appearance... WHICH ALSO he had nothing to do with??? That's all on Joey and GENT for fucking up and only looking at the outside and not the inside. Is it obvious how much I need this guy to have a happy life?? I read this today and many thoughts came to mind so yeah this is another rambling.

'til this day I don't get over the fact that only last year we had the Last Season of The Owl House, the rushed end of one of the greatest series of the decade, that could have mark a new course for many series yet to come, the spiritual successor of another of the greatest series of all Gravity Falls.

The Owl House was released in 2020 just four years ago and it was cancelled in 2022, two years ago, presumable cause it had too much representation for Disney's taste.

This is obviousley not confirm, but everyone in the industry and Dana Terrace herself had made clear that this was the main reason.

All this just 2 years ago, many like to say we live in a time were LGBT+ community had all the representation they need, that everything is gay now days and and that this excess of representation is becoming tedious. And then this is a case from fucking 2 years ago.

It just so sickening, to think that yeah we have representation nowdays but it has to be a certain tipe of rep, it can not be too much, in the Owl House I think there was just one straight couple in the main cast, it has not to be too on the nose, gods forbid for the main character to be gay, lesbian, bi or the non existent trans representation, and it cannot be normal, if you are gay it has to be your main trait, your whole life, you have to have like many crisis as you can and have a whole out of the closet episode, it has to be the revelation of the century.

I still remeber Alex Hirsch puteando a Disney cause they didn't let him do many things he wanted with his own serie, among them the relationship betweenm the two town sheriffs, one of the cutest things in the show, and very funny too.

Alex Hirsch has always been very vocal about he's own despite for Disney as a creator that work for them. And thats why I love him.

I still remeber cartoon network forbidding Rebecca Sugar to say that the Gems were womans, cause that would imply that all the gems were lesbians and that was a totally No No for fricking Cartoon Network, the one everyone point when saying is only Disney the non inclusive one.

(why they never bring this back? what is wrong with Steven Universe?)

Though this end like a tiro en la culata which means backfire cause suddenly the gems were non binary or no gender which was fricking funny cause even more hard to explain XD

This also happened with Adventure Time, another Cartoon serie, were everyone was lost whith the Bublegum and Marcy kiss in the last episode, cause we were told they had a relationship in fricking Season 3 but no, they didn't tell explicitly that they were in a romantic relationship, cause you know... lesbian equal bad.

Their relationship keep getting explore and we had amazing episodes with this two navigating their feelings for each other, the past mistakes in their relationship and how to become better together. But all this while not telling us that they love each other, cause they weren't allow to tell us.

This is merely frustration on my part, I know we have better represantation nowdays, but... is not nearly enough, like I said, theres still close to non rep for ace or trans people, bisexual are getting better, though the rep still is plagued of horrible stereotype and fetization, but this is something lesbian and gays can have manage to avoid yet so what we expect.

So yeah we should celebrate our representation, and not let anyone tell us that is enough or too much, cause til this day the best ace representation I have seen comes from Todd from Bojack Horseman a serie from 2014 that ended in 2020, that set the bar and none had even try to fight, I hope Alastor become a better rep in this front, I really hope so. Lilith made an absolute great work, but sadley cause the serie was cut out we missed a lot of this character T^T

And Im not gonna talk about trans rep cause that's just sad.

I will always hold resentment to Disney cause of what they did to the Owl House, for sure, that something I hold near my heart everyday.

So yeah I totally use this persons post to talk about me me me, and I dont know them so prefer not to involve them in this.

Memories and other stuff

I was watching a 2006/7? show a few weeks or so ago and they shown the girl with her mom on Kids Choice Awards which got me thinking about the first time i watch the award, it was the 2012 edition

i remember being so excited, it was Will Smith that presented the awards if memory and google serves correctly, i was voting non-stoping for the singer's, cartoons and things a like up to the last minute because it was the first time i was watching it and it feel like magic, like all those famous people together in one place? sign me up, i remenber going back and forward with the dubbing and non dubbing because they were dubbing simultaneously with the program that was live, i have such a vivid memory about the show that i remenber that they reprise the awards in the next day in the morning and i made dad wait until the reprise ends to then go to his house which he did, months later i would become a Directioner (hence the One Direction photo up there) but months before becaming a directioner i remenber nickelodeon same channel that hosted the KCA was showing commercials for the Up All Night live tour show (sorry all i could find was an article about it😬)

I didn't really care about it cause all I care about at the time was if Freddie was going to be with Carly from Icarly (yes i did ship them more than Freddie and Sam) I was obsessed with Icarly like that was my show y'know? I think I liked a bit to much (read a lot) cause even my sister who was living in other state at the time knew that I loved Icarly (I got an Icarly backpack from her) but I belive the Icarly phase was short because once I got bitten by the One Direction obsession it only got worset as time went by I didn't mind mom and dad on the other hand... Well let's just say they thought it was a phase(it wasn't) all that while I was 11 years old quite a lot right? by early-mid 2014 I remenber finding out who Demi Lovato was and Oh. My. God i was in love and when I say in love was like in love with her you know the kinda in love that you are not supouse to feel for a famous person? but that's what i felt at the time, with Demi i remenber being really different than with the boys cause while with the boys i found about sex at 11 years old (mom didn't like it haha) and they were all very young, with Demi although she was also pretty young at like 22/23 she had more "problems" so to speak, it wasn't problems but she had more story than the 1D boys at 18, 21 years old, I mean she was at rehab at like 17, 18? for like lots of mental problems, it was with her that I found out what mental health was, what each letter on the LGBTQ+ meant for all I know(she was heavy on the topic hell her "really don't care" video was recorded in a pride parade), I became obsessed with that scene of her kissing Santana in Glee, like that scene messed up with my brain chemistry somehow, i used to say that Demi was the light at the end of the tunnel for me cause when i met her the step-dad I had at the time was heavy on drugs and alcohol (more alcohol than drugs i think, i try not to think about those times tbh) but i remenber seen him stoned out of his head and drunk several times at the time, like Frank from Shameless but worst, it wasn't fun like Frank(Frank was funny, he wasn't), the fights were the worst, god the trauma i have from those fights, because as you can imagine i saw everything but the Demi i got was this one

She was sweet, funny, she was everything you could ask for an a famous singer, she had the voice, the fandom used to said that the "Skyscraper"(one of her songs) was a life saver that like the song save lots of people when it was released, now looking back at it I remenber a lot of fans saying that they were lovatics because Demi was very open about her struggles with mental health (depression, self-harm, bullying and stuff like that) which she was don't get me wrong i personally learn lots of things with her, Demi was the reason I paint my hair it was purple and got white in like 2 to 4 days I think but I liked it was fun, I think I too could fit in that category of "People Demi Lovato save" because she appeared in my life when I needed the most and was feeling very isolated, lonely, not that I didn't had anyone like dad, sister or brother I did and I still do at least two of them but it was different idk how to explain at same time cause like most fights between them (mom and step-dad) was at night/midnight and most of them live far away (dad didn't but...) but then again they would be mostly be found sleeping but then I found out about Doctor Who and what a show it is hum, my doctor and companion was 10th and Martha Jones i wanted to be just like her thought she is black and i'm white as a paper so kinda hard as you can imagine but she was everything I wanted to be, strong, incredible and someone that people obey in the sense of like "oh it's better not to mess with her because otherwise it will be a problem" y'know? I used to pray that the Doctor would appear in my room and take me on adventures (I secretly still do) it never happen which is sad but it happen's to the best of us, Demi made me met Fifth Harmony the girls I got were these

I remenber really liking Camila because her name was the easiest to pronounce and that she had a banana sock that was her lucky charn, in fact that was the first video I remember watching from their takeover it was the "Camila's banana lucky sock's", I used to love their takeovers like that was my favorite thing (i probably still know all the words for some of my favorites for that matter) but I remenber "meeting" them though a Camren fanfic but I didn't know they're names again Camila was the easiest cause is the most brazilian name out of the 5 names but after watching some of they're videos I decided that Normani was going to be my favorite cause she used to dance, she was a gymnast and she could sing like a godness, looking back at it now she and Ally were like Niall and Louis the "background singer" in both bands if I'm being honest, all four of them could sing but the focus either on Harry, Liam, Zayn, Camila or Lauren (more Harry and Camila than Zayn and Lauren tbh) but they were the focus of both groups I suppose it was because they(Harry, Camila and Lauren) were the "face" of respective groups (if that makes sense) but in terms of shipping the pairs where Larry and Camren I unfortunately had ship both of them it's one of the very few things that i'm shame of saying and i'm not shame of anything (which drives mom crazy) but at the time if you didn't ship both "couples" you were exclude from the fandom(from the record I don't think any of them never had anything, I genuinely belive they were just best friends) that's how things were at the time y'know? I did had other ship's that were less popular (like Ziall and Norminah) that i liked way more than Larry and Camren but that's how things were at the time and i miss so, extremely much i don't think there are words to describe how much, if you read until here i love you 💜💜

I know I haven’t been able to shut up about mickey mouse nonstop but sighs!!!! I’ve seen meta fics about toons existing in real life but still being the product of their creators and how that life is like a la Who Framed Roger Rabbit and when it comes to mickey either he’s an spoiled, egotistical asshole who treats his friends like shit and only pretends to be nice for the cameras, or he IS actually nice but also completely sanitized and passive under Disney and everyone shits on him for being so naive or whatever and both takes suck ass tbh

And it’s like. God how do I even phrase this.

I wanna see toon meta stuff where Mickey is still fundamentally kind and friendly and also so so SO unbelievably tired after almost a fucking century and has a MUCH lower threshold for bullshit as a result

A Mickey who has always loved to make people happy with his acting and still does in theory but also has become completely disillusioned with Disney’s business ethics and is now counting the milliseconds until he’s released into the public domain

A Mickey who adores his friends and particularly loves Minnie more than anything and viceversa not because they were made to be a couple but because witnessing and living so many things together over so many years has made them understand each other better than anyone else (and that love can be romantic or not, depending on your read on it; it shouldn’t change the trust in each other either way)

A Mickey who can make crass jokes and swear because screw you, just because he’s a kids’ cartoon doesn’t mean he’s a baby and he’s really tired of being treated like one, specially when he’s not even on the clock.

A Mickey who has a complicated relationship with Walt and— yeah, maybe he DID see him as something of a father once but over the years he’s come to realize he was really just his boss at best.

A Mickey who is aware of his (im)mortality and has lived too much but not aged enough and who has outlived so many humans and toons alike while wondering if he’ll ever see the end. If he’ll even want it or be ready for it.

(Also he probably spent months trying to figure out how smartphones work and is perpetually disappointed the 21st century doesn’t have flying cars like in The Jetsons and sometimes you can see his soul crumble to dust in casual conversation because what do you mean the 50’s were 70 years ago and not last decade????? Huh????)

A Mickey who can do whatever the hell he wants with his gender and sexual/romantic orientation because come one man, it’s been 90+ years. You really think he wouldn’t at least be questioning after all that time?

A Mickey who is very, very sick of people, complete strangers, thinking that because they only know him from his cartoons means they have him all figured out and can make assumptions on who he is or who he HAS to be instead of. you know. get to know him like an actual person

(A Mickey who still wonders in his lowest moments IF he’s even a person and not just a commodity to be sold, a brand pasted on overpriced merchandise)

A Mickey who is depressed and anxious and angry and scared and bitter at all once and is still learning to allow himself to feel all of those things without letting them define him because that’s not the kind of person he wants to be, even if he does have enough reasons to be. There's a good chance I'm just being a stick in the mud here, and before I say anything else I wanna clarify that like, if you are enjoying and excited for sonic movie 3, like do your thing, I'm not vagueblogging or making callouts about people who like them.

I liked the first two movies decently well when they came out, I remember being a part of that first wave of people who went "Wow, that was so much better than I expected, haha its finally a good video game movie!" And the thing is, movie 3 doesn't look to be doing anything notably different from the first two. So, I've been asking myself, ever since the first trailer for movie 3 dropped, "why are you so much more down on this one? Why does this suddenly strike you as Bad?"

I think it has to do with the context in which these movies are releasing. Like let's turn the clock back to the release of sonic movie 1, Feb 2020. The last 4 sonic games chronologically on the marker were Forces, Mania, TSR, and fucking Rise of Lyric, not to mention the BOOM cartoon still being fresh in folks heads. "But one of those is good!" Yes, and it was made entirely by essentially contracted fans. Sonic was in an ATROCIOUS place that kinda felt hopeless to recover from. So, yeah, at the time the first movie really was a breath of fresh air. Despite the MCU style quips, the fucking cop dad, and the abundance of humans as a focus, it was STILL better than any other Sonic Thing being made at the time, because it was putting a modicum of effort into depicting the character of Sonic as a Character, and not just a caricature, to say nothing of hints of introducing their own original lore elements. Movie 2 did more of that! Just 2 years later, it gave us exactly what movie 1 did, just more! For good and bad. I remember coming out of 2 a little more lukewarm, but still more or less Content, because it was a pretty good Sonic thing that came out.

And then I read the IDW comic finally.

I felt borderline insulted that there was honest to god high quality, funny, gripping, and passionate Sonic material on the market that I just didn't know about until thinking it look it over out of idle curiosity. Sure, I knew the comics Existed, I remember when IDW first got the IP and they premiered Tangle, everyone loves Tangle. But I just kind of assumed it was like anything else Sonic coming out at the time; mediocre at best. And I'm really mad at myself for that, because the IDW comics are possibly everything you could want if you also considered yourself a starving Sonic fan. You like that one character who hasn't been in the spotlight for years? IDW has you covered. Character dynamics and not just one liners? IDW. Honest to god emotion and pathos? IIIIIIIIDW. And its been going on in the background of all this garbage for years now with nary a thrown bone. Please for the love of god read the IDW comics.

And THEN. Frontiers happened.

To get out ahead of this, yes I could take a red pen to Frontiers and underline every little mistake it makes from both a mechanical and narrative perspective. But I won't be doing that. Frontiers represented something I genuinely thought would not happen; Sonic, both the character and the series, getting a massive shot in the arm. New character that actually adds something to the universe with staying power. New lore for old concepts. A new take on voice direction that put previously Just Fine VAs in a better light. Ian Flynn - the guy primarily behind the IDW comics! - brought on as a writer (and no not just a translator he did work with the sonic team guys on the script). Real, tangible ambition in gameplay with player freedom as a focal point. If you described Frontiers, faults and all, to someone in 2018 or so, they'd assume it was a passionate fangame, because sonic team/sega could NEVER make something like this. And yet, here we are.

And then Shadow Generations! I almost feel like I dont need to elaborate on this one, everyone is head over heels for ShadowGen, for what I think are plainly obvious reasons. Building off the back of the previous game instead of throwing it all out and making a new engine Again. Reinstating one of the most popular characters and including everything people Actually Liked about him to begin with. Honest to god closure and emotional payoff for him. Getting back Marza Animation for like the entire game?? Frontiers was "a step in the right direction". ShadowGen is just A Good Fucking Sonic Game.

And then you compare that now. Living now in a post IDW, Frontiers, and ShadowGens timeline... movie 3 doesn't have a place anymore. Its trying to do all the same things as 1 and 2 but where before they were pleasant consolations, now they ring... annoying.

After Frontiers and IDW actually made me laugh on more than one occasion, hearing Sonic make marvel quips makes me groan. After seeing them make strides in referencing and reincorporating their own lore, reference gags like Knuckles going "pika pika!" makes me roll my eyes and sigh. Gerald finally has an Actual Character now, we have this wonderful window into who he was as a person, the mournful father of Shadow and grandfather to Maria, the good man backed into a wall by fate... and then seeing him being played as a box standard Evil Scientist by Jim Fucking Carrey makes me want to eat drywall.

Its a remarkable phenomenon really, the movies are continuing to do the Exact same thing they've always been doing, but now the landscape has changed around them. And I honestly don't think there's a place for them anymore, not unless they grow up real damn quick. I love the path that the sonic series is on right now, because its reminded me why I like it to begin with. I dont love that we've gotta still walk it with this guy going "So THAT just happened" and cocking an eyebrow every time something Mildly Strange happens.

Since the new live action Avatar is apparently out on netflix, I figured now is an excellent time to remember the last attempt at a live action this series got.

Avatar: The Last Airbender is one of the most beloved TV shows of all time, with amazing writing, world-building, and characters. Conversely, The Last Airbender (no avatar in this title) is one of the most detested and worst movies of all time. I doubt that I have anything new to say about it because it has been getting dragged since it was released 14 years ago, but that won't stop me from dragging it some more.

As is the trend with many live action reboots, this movie hates fun. The original show was colorful, funny, and charming; the movie is none of those things. The color palette seems to have been taken directly from a Saw movie, with not a warm tone to be found. For comparisons sake, here's a side by side of the gaang from the movie and from the original:

Isn't it incredible how they managed to sap all the color out of the original character designs?

One of my favorite things about the original cartoon was the expressive animation. I don't expect a live action movie to have expressive animation, but I do expect expressive acting, or even just regular acting. Unfortunately for myself and the world at large, the main actors did not get the memo that they were supposed to do that, so instead they delivered their dialogue stone faced with weird pacing. I don't want to hate on the actors too much, as many of them were children when this movie was released, and who knows what sort of direction M. Night Shyamalan gave them. However, I will say that with maybe the exception of Dev Patel, who played an okay Zuko, the cast did an awful job of capturing the magic of the original characters. I am willing to give a pass to Seychelle Gabriel, because she voiced Asami in The Legend of Korra, and I am nothing if not an Asami supporter. But the rest of the cast is on very thin ice. 

Another fun thing about this god-forsaken movie is the way it manages to make the viewer feel incredibly uncomfortable. It has an aura about it that I can only describe as constipated. The feeling I got watching is reminiscent of the time I was roped into listening a coworker at McDonalds talk about his crypto scheme, except that only lasted about 15 minutes, and the movie is 103 minutes long.

Truly the only good quality of the movie is its ability to bring together so many people in hatred. There aren’t too many things we can all form a near-universal opinion on, but we can all agree that this movie is a dumpster fire. 

Unlike some of the other movies I have hated on this blog, I don’t think it is controversial for me to hate this one. It has already been so thoroughly hated on that all the points I make here are hardly likely to be original. Regardless, I felt it necessary to kick this dead horse, both for the opportunity to complain (one of my favorite activities), and because I need to choose one movie to hate per week for the class this blog is for, and this one is so so hateable. I didn't even list everything wrong with it and this post is already so long.

I haven't watched the new live action show yet, and I don't really have high hopes, but given how low the bar is, it would have to limbo into hell to disappoint me.

In conclusion: both fucking great episodes. I am always EXTRA excited for Butt-Head characterization moments, it just makes him so much more human. I honestly didn’t notice how bad it had gotten last season until i compared it to how this one is going so far, it feels more like older seasons butthead again :] Like dont get me wrong i LOVE it when he’s mean its just who he is but it should come more out of a place of stupidity/no real self awareness than like. idk wherever it was coming from last season. These boys are goin soft on us and to that i say: thank god. It’s nice to see them act human. I hate this but i'm getting this out of the way right now because i am NOT pointing out every time this happens, but i cannot believe how much unintentional deviantart type shit is in this?? Obviously it's all goofy cartoon gags so it's innocuous in intent but with so many in quick succession it feels like we're checking off boxes here. Kids, there's nothing more cool than drawing characters you like, but if an anonymous stranger ever randomly approaches you asking you to draw "what if ashley was giant haha", THAT'S NO GOOD

One other thing before i get into the individual stages that i thought was weird even back when they released the trailers for this, and i'm being a little fun police about this, is fhat i dont like the implication that this ancient civilization was colonized and converted into a tourist trap. I don't know how i would have fixed this but seeing it all laid out like that is like oh, this feels sucky.

WARIO: I like the callback to smooves in his stage and also that he gets both in and out of trouble by being a massive dick. The new voice......it's gonnna have to grow on me

MONA: Was a little disappointed that she was looking for mermaids instead of like barnacles or something but it's fine, mermaids can be for everyone. Joe is a fucking maniac but i respect him.

THE CRYGORS: really fucking cute. I love the pose mike does when you win. Also, the retroactive cave drawings of each of them are super funny

I don't know how to feel about the oinker being alive. I'm at a loss. On one hand, it upends everything we know about the oinker. On the other hand, i too have a soul bond with my car

I enjoyed being able to look inside orbulon's brain. I think that is all i ever wanted to do in a wario game.

One thing i think is highly consistent with his old characterization is that he WOULD instantly welcome people worshipping him like a god

THE ORBULON DAD REVEAL. It's like. See I thought we were going to meet him in person and it would be like a big lore thing but this is literally a joke. I'm ok with a joke. I'm ok with a gaff.

I really appreciated all of the slapstick. If orbulon doesn't eat shit on the concrete is it even worth it

This is in a later cutscene but i'm addressing it here, i simultaneously love and hate the fact that orbulon is depicted sleeping on a lounge chair slurping a drink because i literally drew him doing exactly that in the next camping episode. I'm very happy that we are all in agreement that that is a thing he can do. But mark my words i did it first so you gotta act surprised okay

OK one last thing but i really liked rhe chicken rap

ASHLEY: Just your standard garden variety ashley cutscene. Even on vacation red needs a vacation

THE REMIX BUS: this is my favorite cutscene in the game. Super funny, love the chaos as well as seeing each character fooling around and just hanging out, and mike's singing is melodious. This is the peace all true warriors strive for

CRICKET & MANTIS: I think i said "WHAT" out loud like five times during both of these cutscenes. WHAT!!!!!!!!!

KAT & ANA: Similarly, CRACTUS??!!!?! FROM WARIO LAND??!! I enjoy how many random throwbacks this game has. Also, nice to see the return of leo even though i didnt care about him that much. He's alright

JIMMY T: Beautiful as always. 10/10 no notes

Dribblenspitz: I think there is more raw emotion in dribble's "AW, NUTS" than the entire rest of the game. Love their cutscene

Octopath Traveler II

Octopath Traveler II landed better for me than its predecessor. The visuals are lovely, the soundtrack is awesome again, and the writing is better this time around. I put around 50 hours into this game, and I hit up against a boss fight that took me ~45 minutes to lose. Tried a couple of times and lost the drive to come back. Excellent RPG with some pacing problems and spongey boss fights. Stray Gods: The Roleplaying Musical

More of a visual novel musical than a roleplaying one, the game's story and aesthetic immediately hooked me. Everything about the game hits except - crucially - the music. I cared about the characters and was invested in the story, and the way you make choices that affect the story and the current song is a really neat hook. The songs just don't have the juice though.

Dredge

In Dredge you play as a fishing boat captain (or, if you prefer, you play as a boat). You go out for the day, make your catch, and come back to port to sell. If you find yourself out at night you might encounter some weird sights and sounds, your light might flicker and die, and the vibes are generally Off. There's a lot of weird shit happening and odd characters sending you out for fishes. It's a wonderfully foreboding world full of mystery and intrigue. It's a game that is somehow chill and disturbing at the same time.

Wildfrost

Wildfrost is the best card game I played this year with some neat mechanics and lovely artwork. I had it on my second screen quite a bit. My biggest issue with it is that it's too easy to overlook something and blow the game unless you really pay close attention (a Me Problem). Each character on the screen has its own timer, stats, and text. And that's normally not a problem at all for me, but when your champion dies the game is over. Too many of my plays ended when my champion died unexpectedly. Again, a great card game but not a good passive second screen game.

The Cosmic Wheel Sisterhood

Deckbuilding tarot visual novel game. Writing, music, and overall vibes are just wonderful here. Reminiscent of The Red Strings Club. My only real complaint is that everything surrounding the main conflict of the story is more interesting than the political posturing and campaigning for the new leader of the coven which much of the game centers on.

Sea of Stars

Similar to last year's Chained Echoes, I can tell that there's a really good game here but it just never completely clicked for me. I played quite a bit of it and enjoyed my time with it, but didn't feel compelled to keep coming back.

Lamplighter’s League

The elevator pitch for this game is XCOM but with an Indiana Jones theme. I somehow managed to enjoy it more than either of its inspirations. It feels a bit like a fancy version of Pathway. It's a little rough around the edges, but I had a blast assembling a team of weirdoes to battle cultists and steal relics.

Fire Emblem Engage

I have to stop playing Fire Emblem games. Like Pokemon, the combat is passable but ultimately disappointing for me. It's too quick, too wham-bam rock-paper-scissors for me. Engage brings back characters from the series' past, which is unfortunately lost on me. I enjoyed the game's visuals and goofy Saturday morning cartoon aesthetics, but the combat never hit for me.

Dave the Diver

This one was not on my radar at all when it released, but Dave the Diver really impressed me with its writing, visual style and charm, and variety of minigames. The cast of characters and story are great, particularly the sushi restaurant portion of the game. The storyline with the underwater kingdom hurt the pacing for me a bit, but this game is still a banger.

Theatrhythm: Final Bar Line

I've never gotten into a rhythm game that didn't involve a plastic instrument before now, but pressing buttons in time to all the Final Fantasy music while little chibi Final Fantasy characters fight little chibi Final Fantasy monsters is somehow very compelling to me. I played this game on and off all year long as a nice way to unwind with a song or twelve.

Dead Space Remake

I missed this game the first time around, glad to have caught the remake here. It's been a great year for survival horror games, and Dead Space is a good one. "Alone and terrified on a crashed space station in a part of the universe humanity really shouldn't be" is well-worn territory and for good reason. It's compelling when done well, and Dead Space does it well.

Super Mario Bros Wonder

Time and nostalgia, man. I have no idea how to rank this game or even how to verbalize my thoughts and feelings on it. It's a callback to the games I played growing up. Most sidescrolling platformers these days are metroidvanias, indie titles, or both. Getting a game from Nintendo that feels like a true successor to Super Mario World some thirty years later is wild.

It's not that they haven't done Mario sidescrollers between now and then, it's just that they have felt rote and joyless, like they ticked the boxes and released it. They felt uninspired. Super Mario Bros Wonder is not guilty of that. It is bursting at the seams with life and joy and creativity and (forgive me) wonder. They're not afraid to get weird with it, to introduce new elements and new enemies without going overboard with them. Every new stage is full of potential because you have no idea what they might throw at you.

A lot of this comes from the new Wonder Flower, a powerup you can find somewhere in each level that feels like an acid trip. Warp pipes come to life, the hills bounce, the walls bleed, and you can see sounds and taste colors. The game also adds equippable badges that let you float when you jump, jump straight up when clinging to a wall, swim faster, or any number of things.

Listing off new features doesn't mean much without execution, and it hits on all cylinders here. They've also added a strand element that the player can opt into, where you can see ghost outlines of other players and help them out or get help from them. It's especially useful in finding secrets (Oh, someone's way up there? How do I get up there?). It's a neat take on co-op, akin to getting helpful notes from other players in souls games.

The Nintendo of the past 5 years or so feels confident in a way that had been missing for a long while. Mario Odyssey, Bowser's Fury, Breath of the Wild, Tears of the Kingdom, and now Mario Wonder all feel like they've grown beyond the shackles of their series' past and are bold in a way that's wonderful to see.

Fuga: Melodies of Steel 2

The sequel to one of 2021's best games did not disappoint. It largely brought more of the same: orphans, tragedies of war, furries, and tank on tank battle. I don't see any of those things much, so this was a welcome entry for me this year.

Dordogne

This is a perfect game pass game. An indie title I'd never heard of and doesn't immediately appeal to me, but it's on a service I already pay for so why not? It's about a young woman going back to her recently deceased grandmother's home in France, where she'd spent a summer as a young child.

She is recovering memories and unearthing the source of family trauma - the kind that often bubbles up with the passing of a matriarch. The game really takes its time lingering on small details - every step of making tea in grandma's kitchen, the dusty old photos in the living room, the old train set in the attic. These little details can surprise us with how strongly they hang on. I found myself thinking about the time I spent with my own grandmother (the only grandparent I ever knew). Remembering the worn deck of Authors cards we played with, the way her hands looked as she washed green beans we picked together.

I brought my own experiences to the game, and I think that's the point.

Endless Dungeon

Games don't always have to reinvent the wheel to leave an impression and provide enjoyment. Endless Dungeon was a fun co-op twin stick dungeon crawler that my wife and I played. The moving and shooting felt good and it provided plenty of challenges to overcome together. In a year that didn't include Diablo 4, this might have hit harder for us.

Like a Dragon Ishin

Give me my Yakuza in whichever form you like. Turn-based, real time, Modern day, 80's, feudal Japan, zombies. Fuckin' whatever. I'll clean my plate every time. This one's ending smelled pretty funny from an historical/nationalism point of view, but the rest of the game felt like historical Yakuza tourism and I am here for it.

The Last Spell

This game is an early access success story. I played a lot of it before it went 1.0, and I kept enjoying it after. You're managing a small base that is being invaded by hordes of enemies every night. You control a small band (3-6) of heroes tasked with mowing down wave after wave of monsters, backed up by traps, ballistae, and catapults if you choose to build them.

After the night passes you level up your heroes, build up your little base, outfit your crew with new gear, and do it again. It does one of my favorite things in games: it makes you feel stupidly overpowered then pushes you to your limit. My victories usually end with my town almost in ruins, which is the perfect difficulty. Lastly - and definitely not least -the soundtrack is a prog rock cornucopia.

Final Fantasy XVI

Final Fantasy XVI has been a polarizing release, with some fans put off by the clear Game of Thrones inspiration. The gameplay is 3rd person action where you're only playing as Clive. As someone uninterested in Game of Thrones and not especially precious about the sanctity of the Final Fantasy series, this is a fantastic game.

It does spectacle and bombast in a way no other game did this year. The game revolves around eikons - the game's pantheon of summons like Bahamut, Ifrit, etc - and the battles between them are filled with button mashing and quick time events.

Unfortunately the button mashy combat was hard on my hands because I am old now, and the maybe the PS5 controller is uncomfortable for that? I enjoyed the game every time I picked it and played it, but I didn't find myself drawn back to it frequently.

It's in good company with 90% of 3rd person action games I've played. I had fun with it and didn't finish it.

Resident Evil 4 Remake

I never played more than an hour of this game before the remake. It follows the path of every Resident Evil game I've ever played, starting off very strong before ending with a sort of wet fart in the back third of the game. That said, it's a great game and I understand the love it gets. That opening section of the game in the village is top tier, and there are some great characters along the way. This probably would be in my top 10, but I don't like lining remakes (even excellent ones) up alongside new releases when it comes time to hand out awards.

Super Mario RPG Remake

Similar to the RE4 remake, this would be 100% in my top 10 if it was a new title and not a remake. I played this in 1996 when it originally came out. The notion of Square making a Mario RPG was bonkers, and they pulled it off incredibly well. That novelty is gone in 2023 after we've seen Mario in all kinds of genres, but the execution still holds up beautifully.

It didn't take long before she was on the bed, hot Cajun superhero on top of her. They made out like they were in a movie. She was tugging on his hair and his hands were doing everything right...

"Mm, oh please, please, mmph--gods I'm--" Right as she started to feel fucking great between her legs, ready for him to blow her mind, the room and his face faded away. Jayn mentally screamed in the name of the injustice being committed. HOW DARE the universe--

She didn't even bother to open her eyes. The soft sound of the AC coming on was enough. Oh gee, real life.

"Hm?"

As we approach the end of another anime season, i feel compelled to actually spotlight a few surprises. Lately, I've fallen out of love with the whole genre. I'm forty years old and have been watching this sh*t since i was, like, four. Godzilla and Transformers were my gateway drug into what we called Otaku culture, way back when i was young. Basically, Weebs before Weebs. Still, being so young and seeing suck stunning visuals and, oh my god, the violence! I am Eighties Baby so sh*t was REAL lax back then. I grew up on Guyver, Fist of the North Star, and Wicked City. Akira changed my life at eight or nine years old and I've been a staunch supporter of the sh*t ever since. Nowadays, that quality is lost. The last few seasons have driven home the fact no one wants to spend money on sh*t. There are a few exceptions, of course. Frieren is a f*cking classic, gorgeous beyond words and f*cking emotionally damaging, and Eminence in Shadow is probably some of the funnest Shounen I've seen in some time but those are few and far in between. Kaiju no. 8 has all the makings of brilliance, and the budget to match. Anything Mappa or UFOtable releases is going to be pretty but probably lack anything resembling substance. It's hard to nil down both and, more often than not, it's the animation quality which suffers, which is why i wanted to make this post. There are three shows this season which are brilliant but lack in the visuals at times. They are definitely worth your time, even if they look cheap as f*ck.

No Longer Allowed in Another World

Look, I've been touting the virtues of this show since the manga dropped a few years ago. Seriously, if you search this blog for Love,Death, and Isekai, you'll see an entire review of the manga. I posed that sh*t two years ago. I've been a shill for the manga ever since. When it got the anime treatment, i was disappointed by a few things (they gave Tama shoes. Why? Why deprive of such slutty foot game?) but the show, itself, looked cheap. I was disappointed for, like, three or four episodes. All the way until Sensay used his powers for the first time. Then i understood why the animation was sh*t. Those few instances, almost always splash pages in the manga, got all the money. I was let down. Just like i was with Chained Soldier, Chillin in a Different World, and I Got a Cheat Ability in a Different World. I knew i couldn't drop this show like i did those others because i know where the narrative goes so i stuck it out. The animation gets better, slightly, but it never really impresses. Still, the characters and world -building are more than enough to carry. Definitely check this one out based on the story, alone. Expect bright posts of exceptional quality, but it's mostly passable at best.

I Parry Everything

This one is a mixed bag for me. I definitely enjoyed the show but i felt like it could have been better. It's not overly stunning in terms of visuals, but you can tell work was put into this, More than anything, the character work is the draw here. I love this show based strictly off the interaction between the main cast. There are some interesting world-building stuff going on in the peripheral but, for me, it's how they all kind of bounce off each other which makes this worth a watch. Strong character design, too. Like, the look of this world is pretty well envisioned.

The Ossan Newbie Adventurer, Trained to Death by the Most Powerful Party, Became Invincible

This is arguably the worst looking on this selection and, somehow, the one i found myself committed to the most. F*cking Ossan is a whole ass contradictory! There should be some bombastic f*cking fights and spectacles all over this thing and, nope! It looks like and old Hanna-Barbera cartoon from the f*cking Seventies most of the time. Still, the performances, narrative, world-building, character work, plot, and just overall heart of this anime, more than makes up for the trash visuals. It's like the opposite of Solo Leveling; All narrative substance, no visual quality at all. I toughed this grody sh*t out until the end and felt almost as satisfied as watching the end of Frieren Th overall plot and character performances are THAT good!

A Nobody's Way Up to an Exploration Hero LV

This is another one that I've actually been reading. There is some absolutely STUNNING art in the book, certain scenes that have these wonderful layouts which i could see being straight up epic in animation. They are not. Bro, i was about as disappointed in this sh*t as i was with I Got a Cheat Ability in a Different World, and that's saying the most. I wasn't expected Tomahawk steak but i figured at least an Angus ribeye, you know? I got Hamburg steak instead. Like, it's fine, i guess? I can see why it's popular and do recommend a watch but come on? If this thing had a budget, i could see it being a classic.

I'm just throwing this in here because the first six episodes leaked and it is everything. Anime of the year. Perfect, top to bottom. It's visually striking in every way and the plot is as zany as the manga, No complaints. No gripes. The mention doesn't even belong on this list, I'm just dumby hype about it. Watch Dandadan. It's inspired!
