On a slightly more serious note: I write a lot in english, which is a language I learned later in life. My wife beta-reads for me, english being her mother tongue. We find lots of words where she informs me that this word is not usually hyphenated like this, or compound like that: so we look up the way I wrote it vs. all the other variations (google n-gram viewer used to be good for this) and, almost always, we learn that the way I wrote it has plenty recorded uses overall, but is currently uncommon. And so I say - sure, why can't I use the uncommon one if I like it that way? It's still perfectly understandable, and language is made by those who use it.

We won't have any prescriptivism in this house: my words may fuck as they please.

i find it so funny when other people get mad about how IZUKU feels about Katsuki. Like, I've seen people before say shit like how Izuku should have rejected Katsuki's apology, should stop calling him Kacchan, and treat the rejection in 431 like some kind of vindication where Izuku got to finally say "fuck you" to Katuski.

But like- when has Izuku EVER had anything but admiration for Katsuki?? Sure, I definitely agree at some points Izuku had complicated feeling towards him, but since the very beginning Izuku understood Katsuki's anger came from his insecurity and even then Katsuki was still engrained into Izuku's brain as a symbol of victory. Even BEFORE the apology Izuku based his hero moves off of Katsuki, named himself Deku despite the ties it had to Katsuki, showed up to ground Beta for the Deku vs. Kacchan pt 2 fight, let Katsuki sit in on his meetings with All Might- I coud go on.

Like, i understand you as a audience member potentially wanting the vindication of a "bully" (even though Katsuki is something much deeper than that-) character getting push back, but Izuku NEVER wanted that. Katsuki was someone he always saw as an equal or as above him, he admired Katsuki and felt connected to him, his dream was never vengeance on Katsuki it was for Katsuki to be able to process his feeling in a healthier way and overcome his insecurity. YOU can have your opinions on what should have happened to Katsuki, but do not project those onto Izuku, cause from the very beginning Izuku adored Katsuki, and more importantly, understood why Katsuki did the things he did and acted the way he acted.

So I just had another Frieren thought... (Reminder I have only see the anime so far and have yet to read the Mange which I desperately need to do.)

Frieren is probably the only mage alive that can break Serie's barriers. This is most likely because she was Flamme's apprentice and Flamme was Serie's. Frieren knows those barriers well Flamme is known for her barriers she long since perfected her barrier spells and Frieren made shattering Serei's in the test look so very easy.

Serei knew immediately who broke her barrier so she absolutely knows Frieren's magical signature or more likely knew that Frieren was the only other person who even had a chance of breaking that barrier. (honestly this was the whole real reason Serie bothered to make the trip to Äußerst in order to take over the exam in the first place)

All of the first class mages that work with Serie recognized the Holy Emblem that Frieren carried (that marked her as a Great Mage and knew exactly what it meant). A symbol that was so old it wasn't even recognizable in Himmel's time. This leads me to two points

The first being that Flamme is probably the one who gave Freiren her symbol or it was earned while she was studying with Flamme (most likely case) or shortly after Flamme passed away when Frieren was actively battling demons before she went into the self imposed seclusion Himmel found her in. This could be reinforced when Genau mentioned "The LAST Great Mage is before us" (as I mentioned in a previous post Frieren is the last in Serie's mage lineage though Fern has shown the potential to be a worthy successor)

the second thing is Serie intentionally taught her first class mages to recognize THAT particular ancient symbol. She most likely did this knowing that Frieren was the only mage still carrying one around and she wanted to make sure her human apprentices were able to recognize Frieren when she appeared no matter how long it took her to show up. Which means she was absolutely certain that Frieren would show up eventually.

This just keeps re-enforcing in my mind that Serie desperately wants Frieren to come to her of her own free will and be her apprentice. (the Tsundere that she is) Their ideas of what a mage should be clash so harshly that Serie is determined to make Frieren cave to her ideals and so convinced she can make that happen that she banishes Frieren from accessing mage resources for a thousand years. Even without Frieren willingly being her student she is going to continue testing and growing Frieren through this punishment. I also think she just really wants to see in Frieren what Flamme saw in Frieren but is so stuck in her own ways she is having trouble aligning the type of Mage Frieren is with the type of mage she knows and thinks Frieren should be.

Also I find Frieren's absolute disregard for the first class status, and Richter's worshipful praise of Serie to be HILARIOUS. Like I can only imagine what Frieren was thinking. It must have been something like "Fuck this is Serie's test? now I want to participate even LESS than I did previously and that was already near zero" along with something like "yeah yeah privilege, get any spell you want... Blah blah blah I already turned her down once before now I'm going to have to do it a second time?" or "Please do not say that in front of her... I've met the grumpy old woman before and she's already so full of herself she doesn't need you humans feeding her ego more SIGH" Also can I add how absolutely bad ass Frieren is, she can multitask like a boss, planning the capture of the Stille, suppressing her mana completely, fighting Denken all while still analyzing the barrier. Frieren has the mind of a god damn Magical Computer.

Like I can not imagine what all the other participants of the first class mage test would have thought if they knew that Frieren was not only the Mage from the Hero's Party who defeated the Demon King but that she had apprenticed under Flamme for 50 years and that Flamme was the apprentice of their god-like Serie. It is so obvious that Frieren is already above the level of first class mage to anyone involved that Serie failing her is the ultimate petty grandma move and I am just so amused by this one-sided family rivalry.

(Serie even admits to her cabal of first-class mages that Frieren is "far too powerful for our exam" and that her strength alone upset the balance of the exams and would cause too many to lose their lives if they did a typical 3rd exam which is Serie basically admitting that Frieren is already stronger than a first-class mage so she really does just fail her because of Frieren's mentality and her own Tsundere pettiness, even down to completely blaming Frieren for the failure of the tests and having to change the test strategy like ma'am how is it her fault?!! all she did was take your tests she even played by your rules except maybe for breaking the barrier)

(It was the whole dialogue exchange that was cut, likely due to it laying out LWJ's motivations form pushing WWX away too explicitly, not just this line. Add that to characters acting pretty much the same in this version, and MXTX never mentioning characterisation as something she was refining in the edits, we can be relatively certain this cut is not due to a change in characterisation)

Now, why is this important? MDZS (in its current form) doesn't state character traits outright – it's written better than that – but this is the closest thing to direct, verbal confirmation we'll get that WWX isn't a self-sacrificial idiot! You could always argue that since it's WWX speaking, he's being an 'unreliable narrator', but his remarks are proven right multiple times in the text. He doesn't seek out situations where he has to sacrifice something, it's certainly not his preferred route when dealing with a situation (he finds ways where no sacrifice is necessary, it's a side effect rather than a primary motivation, and as seen in the linked scene with Su She, if something isn't working, he won't go down with the ship trying to save someone. Even the motivations of the Golden Core transfer are a lot more than they seem at first glance – firstly, there's the Jiang debt ('He remembered every single thing he promised Jiang FengMian and Madam Yu—to help and take care of Jiang Cheng'), and this exchange with Wen Ning adds useful motivation context as well:

"If his core was ruined, he’d manage to live on, but Sect Leader Jiang was a different case. He was too driven. He laid too much emphasis on such a subject. Cultivation was his life. If Sect Leader Jiang could only be an ordinary person, unable to go anywhere in life, his entire life would be over." - EXR, Chapter 89

(And that's not just a conjecture! We along with WWX, are shown it in JC's reactions throughout Poisons 5 – he's not drinking or eating anything, thinking that dying and living would be the same thing and there's no point in living anymore.)

So from the evidence we’re shown, I’m pretty confident in saying that this is supposed to be taken truthfully.

actually if i can speak fondly about scientology for a moment. i really liked the "how to use a dictionary" course we took. like fundamentally a huge reason i was such a big reader as a kid is because of that course, and learning from a young age that the basic principles to learning a new word are:

1. look up the word and find its derivation so you know where it came from.

2. find the definition of the word that fits your context.

3. define the word in your own terms so its definition is solid in your mind.

4. make up sentences using the word until it feels comfortable for you.

5. repeat all previous steps with the other definitions of the word.

was all like. kind of vital to me discovering how cool books are, and how impactful language can be. scientology k-2 not that bad. unfortunate that quite literally every other aspect of it was incredibly damaging.
