☆ Podcasts I’ve listened to (2024) ★
Welcome to nightvale (old but tbh I never even finished this one in full (I think it’s still going anyways) I used to be a huge fan years ago but randomly dropped it and I picked it back up a few months back but honestly I only listen to it when I go on walks sometimes when I don’t want to listen to music it’s still solid tho)
Alice isn’t dead (old but it was years since I last heard it so I re-listened to it in december¿ which technically isn’t 2024 but also it could of been january I can’t remember and time isn’t real so)
The bright sessions (another old I love revisiting things once it’s been years lmao)
The college tapes (NEW!! But only bc it’s like a continuation of the bright sessions in a way )
Wolf 359 (NEW and it was really good would listen to again)
Limetown (another re-listen BUT I never finished it fully when it first came out I only heard season 1 because s2 wasn’t out at the time when I last visited it so it’s like new bc of that but also not really)
And that’s it for rn! I might listen to the mangus archives or the black tapes next but I’m not sure also I’m not doing rankings for any of these bc it’s kinda like if it’s a re-listen then obv I’m a fan of said thing and it’s still held up in time n what not also im lazy I’ll update this whenever I listen to something else 8/28

I was not expecting this much engagement for a rambley fic overview, holy fricklefrackle. I’m for sure gonna post it someday, I just want my ducks in a row before I set up expectations. Just gonna address a few comments here ‘cause it’ll be more accessible if posted…. I think?
I wasn’t sure how well Sam being Lady Gotham would be taken but if @suppengott specifically mentioning it bc it’s a fun concept then that’s good enough for me.
@wandixx Alfred takes no shits from anyone and everyone will listen to the Wayne’s butler or so help them they will be destroyed emotionally at the very least. Death may come for Alfred but Alfred would totally will himself into some form of life if he thought it was stupid.
@im-only-here-for-the-fandom Yes. I love where your mind has taken me. Probably not the firsts but boy howdy are they being added to the adoption list. Everyone better start contributing bc I’m going to amass an actual city of adopted sacrifices.
I feel like I should mention that Amity Park is going to have a large part of the weirdness. Like usually in a DCxDP fic it’s Gotham > Amity (or occasionally Amity > Gotham) but the nature of Amity Park as a city-town is going to change to something akin to Nightvale.
Also Ouroboros as a title is growing on me, I know there’s already a dp fic with that name but guys… it’s too perfect. At least a chapter will be named that.
To answer @melyndadwest-blog’s summons and referencing their prompt/theory I have a little fic I’ve been working on but haven’t posted. Working title “Shadows of Future, Lights of the Past” but name very much gonna change.
The core concept is that Danny was an Ancient/High King/Primordial Godlike Enity for a long time because some usurpers got nervous and tried to get rid of him. Erasing his memories for a thousand lifetimes (and when you live for an eternity as a ghost well….) and trapping his physical form before casting it away to be lost to the cosmos and time.
Because of when he ends up and his type of existence, he comes into a lot of innate power that leads to accidental mega godhood. Consequently when he’s freed he is a little screwy. At least he has his soul mates (Tucker and Sam) to help him ground. Meanwhile, shenanigans. Freaking people out, adopting all the sacrifices, and deciding cuddles cures everything. Basically Eldritch Horror Mother Decides You Look Adoptable.
Basically the themes I’m working with are:
Cryptid Danny Fenton
Accidental Godhood
Adoption Crisis
Eternal Trio soulmate addition
Dani is legally Danny’s Baby and totally fought Vlad for custody behind the Nasty Burger
Fucked Luck Tuck is actually cursed and willing took it
DC x DP
No Bruce, he’s old enough to be your grandfather. No adopting the weird teenager.
Cult Sacrifices are legally his to do as he pleases….. and it pleases the ghost parent to have lots of children to care over
Things I’m Considering
Sam is actually Lady Gotham
Ghost Zone is literally Danny’s fully developed core.
OR the GZ is his primordial bastard kid
Alfred died the same night as the Waynes but said “there’s no bloody way I’m letting that boy be completely orphaned”
Danny’s human body never aged passed 14
Honestly I don’t think I’ve talked about it anywhere yet. I’m wanting a plotline and draft done before I start posting, less pressure I guess? I’m not sure what my end goal is is the thing. And I want that settled before I really go nuts.
Also the laptop it’s on died and is being fixed.
Actually “Ouroboros” would be a good title too…. hmm

Are you proship?
Ok I hope this doesn’t sound pretentious but I don’t really like the term proship.
There are certainly a lot of ships I don’t like. I barely ship to start with bc I’m aro so most ships I’m like they’re qpr or friends and I can’t do anything with incest.
But I don’t think we should hurt real life people over fictional characters. And I’m not crazy about real life fiction (note: I’m talking about real people not played personas where they forgot to change their name for the character. Like I’m not going to get mad at someone for rpf about the character John Malkovich from the movie being John Malkovich as played by John Malkovich or Jonathan sims as played by Jonny sims) but I think at worst the person it’s about could sue them for defamation or something like that.
And I don’t trust people to say what’s good or not for the same reason I’m against the death penalty. There are genuinely stories out there that are bad, and there are genuinely vile people who might deserve to die. But the question isn’t what they deserve, the question is who makes the call? Who deserves that power and can be trusted by it? My mom thinks anything with gay people is depraved. I’ve seen people say that mentioning racism exists in a work is racist. I’ve seen people who miss the point of fight club as satire and think it’s about how cool fighting is and not a critique of capitalism and toxic masculinity. If people have the power to censor things that actually have bad things, how can I trust their judgement of bad is the same as my own? How can I trust all stories that talk about taboo real life relevant struggles and issues won’t be erased? How do I know it’s not people like my mother making that choice? They’re trying to ban books from schools all over the country right now, it isn’t that different, it’s just the person who’s controlling what’s banned. And I don’t think it’ll ever be anyone but allocishet white conservatives who in the big real life world, will be in control of that.
And a lot of those stories about “depraved” things are good and amazing and make life better! If I had read Lolita when I was like fifteen there’s a lot of bad stuff I could’ve avoided. Stories about complex morality make you question yourself and your situation. “Am I in that situation” or “am I treating people like that.” It wasn’t until I listened to welcome to nightvale that I realized that gay people are just people and started moving away from the way I had been raised. We NEED fiction about taboo subjects, and we NEED for it to be nuanced so people can learn from it.
I don’t want to get into a lot, but if I had seen depictions of horrible things happening from sympathetic characters my life would’ve been a lot better. It would’ve been easier to go “oh this is bad even if I sometimes get treated good or care about the person doing this. It’s bad behavior even if the he is incredibly nice and giving in every other aspect but this abuse.” Because some people are and in some ways and good in others! One of the most amazing giving people I know who’s almost gone bankrupt from how much he helps others was shitty. He was neglectful and propitiated emotional incest and said horrible things like that women were happier when they couldn’t vote and are all crazy, ugly, or trans, which was the biggest abomination he could think of.
And I was in that situation with that man for years, because he would wake up at 2am to answer a call and take an hour drive to scare off rapists. Shouldn’t have brought his two 14 year old kids but he was reliable for that kind of stuff. He would invite homeless people over to stay the night and would sleep on the couch so they had the bed. He would walk miles just to help someone with a flat tire.
And if I had something that said “abusers can love you and be the kindest person you ever met”, something most people call glorification? I could’ve gotten out 8 years earlier. So we need these stories, it’s hardly their fault that people can’t delve into what a story means, can’t see things like Lolita as more than a romance. Sometimes abusers are people you like and that’s important, because you need to be able to click that and leave anyway.
So while I don’t like the term proship, I am absolutely against censoring fiction, no matter what it’s about.

podcasts
been in a podcast mood lately, so… here’s an ever updating list of the ones i’ve listened to—
the adventure zone — i’m partway through amnesty, have taken a break for now, but i honestly do adore it
my brother my brother & me — so. many. episodes. my favorite thing to put on when i need something funny & not… attention intensive.
the magnus archives — okay, it was kind of slow in the beginning, but i quickly got attached to the characters & the plot. i’m a few eps behind now but… it’s amazing.
the white vault — !!! oh my god. i’ve only listened to the first two seasons bc i don’t want to leave 3 on a cliffhanger, since it’s. not the same characters. but oh my god i LOVE this podcast. i’ve discovered a love for stories revolving around discoveries at remote research bases…
welcome to nightvale — i listened to about 20 episodes, maybe more? it wasn’t BAD but, i just… it’s not quite my thing. the premise (radio show in funky little town) is nice but i’m just… not quite feeling it :/
mabel — it’s weird. fun weird, but weird. i stopped listening sometime after episode 30? or something? but i intend to pick it back up again. it’s a lot of flowery language & subtlety & i need more brain power for it. but it’s nice, i love it. lots of good quotables.
vast horizons — i like this one, but i also don’t. it was made by the same company that did TWV. audio is great & i love dr. nolira BUT i hate the constant audio of her gasping / crying / etc. it’s unpleasant to me, so i may either look up transcripts or wait for a time where it won’t bug me as much.
the message — AMAZING. much like twv i binged it in a single night, p much. the plot line kept having me guessing. the twist at the end was AMAZING. i partially predicted it, but missed a key detail that turned the whole thing on its head. 10/10, would listen again.
lifeafter — included with “the message” as a sort of second season, but a different story. the story itself was amazing but of the five people i would consider “main” characters, i only liked two of them. agent cutler was very unempathetic &. was. definitely on the worse side of law enforcement imo; ross, the pov character, irritated; & his late wife was just. bothersome. did like octavia, the scientist—she was a sweetheart. & sasha, the antagonist, was fun & interesting & i also enjoyed her voice. it’s not a bad listen necessarily just not my cup of tea.
something i’ve learned about myself; i’m not a big fan of visual horror, but audio/reading doesn’t squik me as much, provided there’s not a lot of detailed gore.
i also, as mentioned above, really like research teams discovering weird things, especially in remote places. now how to figure out how to condense that into search terms so that i can google more podcasts like that xD
anyway! i’ve got a whole library full of podcasts to go through, so, i’ll reblog this when i’ve accumulated more. in the meantime, i’ve been up all night (only partially bc of listening) & now it’s bedtime.

thoughts on the latest wtnv eps (kinda jumbled):
first things first, i love the progression of the titles, from The Trouble With Time ("life is too short every second spent not truly living is a waste we are going to die RIGHT NOW") to The Promise Of Time ("the future is ours we will never die we no longer need to fear") as two extremes, and then The Battle With Time which represents the constant oscillation between these two extremes and sometimes finding that perfect middle ground ("the future is not ours to claim and constantly fearing the end of our lives is what holds us back from truly living it in the first place") (and of course the wonderful throwback to "death is only the end if you assume the story is about you" except....slightly more aggressive sjdbjs but that's cecil for you)
speaking of throwbacks, the whole thing with peoples future brains-as-robots and present time nightvalians fighting alongside/against them reminded me a lot of the episode waaay back with the doubles, and the first-hand introduction to kevin, and by extension, desert bluffs, strex corp, and of course, the smiling god. and since this episode saw The Return Of That Weird Ecstatic Deity through a character who was a hardcore worshipper......parallels much? [sidenote: i wonder when exactly casper discovered the smiling god, considering he's from the future]
and while we're on parallels: being reminded of the doubles episode really made me miss dana :( i wish we could've heard about her in this episode while cecil was describing what various citizens were doing. like, i think it would be ooc for present dana to cryofreeze her brain but imagine her fighting her robot counterpart and going "OH GOD WHY THIS AGAIN" or just looking outside her apartment window and hearing everything that was happening and thinking "thank goodness it's not me this time" lol
it was a nice touch for cecil to add how casper's death affected the timeline, but i think it glossed over two things. one, how the entire town and cecil the observer just....decided to kill a guy with a shapeshifting hacksaw (iirc) and then took his brain, put it in a "weak, scrawny" robot and put it to mind numbing (no pun intended) and objectively useless labour for no actual reason. that's scary af, you all?? i wonder what the writers were trying to show through that
two, how even if time in nightvale might have become "normal", its still being messed with. just like the general, the citizens in these episodes altered time significantly (killing casper, which cecil mentioned meant that now he never harvested brains for robots in the first place) in a way that may seem inconsequential presently but completely changed their future. that is also scary af, you all
another thing i noticed was how the community came together. compared to strex or hell beagle this time around the union of the town to defeat a common enemy was......a lot more violent? the scene of the whole town coming out into the streets while cecil narrated it all isn't new (though still extremely sexy), but it seems to be different every time. this time around, cecil mentioning the "neighbouring towns" of ghost pine and whispering forest also coming to help....what stake did they have in this fight? did casper try to rope them in too or does nightvale just have extremely good intracommunity relations these days? also, does this mean those towns also listen to cecil's station?
in context of that, makes me wonder why desert bluffs wasn't mentioned (either that, or it was mentioned and i'm forgetting it as usual). did casper try to harvest brains from desert bluffs? it would make sense, bc the whole smiling god connection. did he come to nightvale after going to desert bluffs? if so: what does that mean for desert bluffs' citizens? were any of the robots of the future from someplace other than nightvale too?
finally, to end on a somewhat positive note: i loved the focus on charlie bear. this working class dude just up and started an uprising to defeat casper and his robots while being a major reason that an uprising was needed to defeat casper and his robots in the first place lmao, good for him
#im still trying to figure out if and how this episode was a commentary on capitalism#and if it was then how well written it was as compared to strex#theres the element of corporations and smiling god in both#and jenny made some good points about NZ and how he didn't make much of an appearance in this ep#the problem with nightvale imo is that i can never tell what is just a writing oversight and what is intentional :/ it bugs me#this is so long i have SO MUCH to say smh#welcome to night vale#wtnv#mine#should i tag spoilers? idk#wtnv spoilers#🤷🏽♂️#in hindsight i often tend to forget that nightvale is a horror podcast lmao
