Fic Writer Edition (tagged by @silver-latin-and-salt, tagging, idk, whoever is writing atm? @twistedsinews @leahazel @junemermaid, anyone who’d like, no one who doesn’t, etc.)

Fandoms: atm, primarily Shadowhunters. But also BioWare: Dragon Age and Mass Effect and maybe someday I’ll post some Jade Empire.

Also the occasional other game or TV show or Yuletide inspired one-shot. It’s a wide and ridiculous range of things, from a Georgette Heyer regency epilogue to Code: Realize and #7kpp to Firefly & even some Sleepy Hollow ficlets from back in s1 before we realized how terrible TPTB were going to be.

Number of fics: I have 158 works published on AO3.

This includes a couple of fanmixes that are linked on there to companion fics/series, two collaborative fics which are not just mine, even less so than most writing that is, and four WIPs: two of which I am still working on, one of which will absolutely 100% NEVER ever get more, and then that last one will probably not get more but who knows, maybe in ten years we’ll do a reunion and try again (it’s one of the collabs).

AS WELL AS: forty-seven different ficlet collections, sorted by fandom and pairing(s), because otherwise I would honestly have almost 1000 things and never be able to find a single damn one of them when I wanted to (and neither would anyone else). Like, ten of them are just for Shadowhunters because I split up the coda-fic by season and then also I put the porn in its own thing and Clizzy is kind of a post-canon AU so they’re on their own too and spin-offs of a particular fic setting get their own collection so they’re all together and etc. etc. etc.

Fic I spent a lot of time on: Do we count time actually writing? Or just the amount of time it hung out in my head before I finished it? Because I probably spent the most actual physical writing time on Lost For Words, which is a frothy cotton-candy experiment in long-fic for Mass Effect that I posted chapter by chapter as I wrote it and actually finished. (I have never successfully repeated the experience, tho I suppose a couple of my Shadowhunters fics will sort-of qualify in terms of length when they’re done, but they didn’t get posted semi-regularly and in progressive chapters in at all the same way.)

In terms of time between debut and completion, that would probably have to go to Cruel Intentions, which took over five years between initially going up on the Dragon Age Kink Meme and actually getting a conclusion.

i am for you and if broken hearts were whole have both been lingering WIPs for over two years at this point now, though, and a couple other DA2 fics were pretty close to that five year mark as well. 😅

Fic I didn’t spend a lot of time on: ashes of angels because I was coming up on my bingo deadline so I just pounded it out in a day. (It’s actually quite good tho! I think so, anyway! I am very proud of it! Read part one first, if you haven’t yet!)

also Impossible, (DA2, Bethany/Sebastian, confessional!porn) which mostly wrote itself in pretty short order, which was delightful. (Tho I also had a very astute beta for that one; don’t think he’s on tumblr anymore tho, or I’d yell at him in thanks again.) I told y’all I had a priest!kink problem. Not that you hadn’t all noticed on your own, anyways...

Longest fic: Finished? The aforementioned Lost for Words at just over 62k.

In limbo? Persephone Rising is literally three times longer than my next longest fic (and still not done!) but it is also a collab fic with three authors, so I suppose that sort of evens out?

Active WIP? i am for you at 59k. I’m not sure how much more is left of that one, tbqh... it will probably end up a bit longer than LfW, tho maybe not by much.

Shortest fic: I have no fucking clue, 47 ficlet collections, remember? In terms of a thing that I forgot to collect, apparently it is Consequences, which is my Brosca after the Landsmeet in DA:O.

Fic I want to rewrite/expand: Except for the revisions to what is now Maleficar, I much prefer to leave fic as is, once it’s up there, so nothing on the re-write front. It was what it was when I did it, and it’s important to remember that, even when you move on to new stuff, imo.

But! I have potential/hopeful sequels in the WIP folder for and breathing is wishing, out of some dreaming tree, with an if in its soul, and several assorted ficlet collections & prompts I’ve sort of teased over the years.

Favourite fic of mine: At the moment, they have hung the sky with arrows because it’s a thing I’m not sure I ever really thought I was going to write, and then I did and I surprised myself a little, but it was fun and it ties together a lot of my thoughts on the Shadowhunters finale in a way I really enjoyed. (Also it has an actual plot! I don’t do that terribly often, I’m usually very introspective in my fic.)

Sneak peek of a WIP/Share an idea? I started a Shadowhunter!Magnus fic for a bingo square, but then scope creep! so I made a moodboard, but there is maybe a fic on the way... eventually. After my Bangs. 🤞🏻

The first time Magnus Bane met the High Warlock of Manhattan it was during his "travels", the two years after graduating from the Academy when most Nephilim wandered from Institute to Institute, seeing how things were done differently around the world, how they were still so often the same, learning about all the things you couldn't see in a classroom.

He wasn't actually in New York City in order to meet the High Warlock, of course, not as a 17-year-old foot soldier, that was well above his pay grade, as the mundanes put it. But when all the full-fledged Shadowhunters had work to do, he was assigned escort duty when the High Warlock showed up to do his yearly wards inspection.

Magnus met High Warlock Lightwood at the main entrance, and almost swallowed his own tongue at the sight of him, a broad shouldered, long-legged white man dressed in a conservative but very well-tailored suit, with heavy eyebrows, even heavier eyelashes, and a complete and utter lack of anything resembling an expression on his face.

A shiver went down Magnus' spine as he met the High Warlock's gaze, and he refused to think too much about why.

Magnus managed to introduce himself reasonably coherently, he thought, offering a hand to shake, but the High Warlock just raised an eyebrow at him. "I thought I'd talked them out of this nonsense last year."

"Uh." Magnus swallowed. The man was both terrifying and ludicrously attractive, and Magnus resigned himself to being a slightly stuttering idiot for the next four-to-six hours. "Not my call, I'm sorry to say. Sir."

The High Warlock rolled his eyes, and stepped forward. Magnus barely managed to dodge out of his way, and followed along behind him as he stalked towards the Angelic Core, where all the Institute Wards were anchored.

He never once acknowledged Magnus' presence as he worked, never asked for directions, or needed any sort of assistance. Magnus followed him anyway, and couldn't even bring himself to be upset about the waste of his time because damn, that view. He could see the shift of Lightwood's shoulders beneath the line of his coat, the tension in the muscles in his arms as each tiny motion correlated to whatever he was doing with his magic. There was so much power there, constrained and under his complete control.

The High Warlock never took so much as a wasted step in his clearly perfectly planned spiral of a route through the Institute's halls, circling out from the Core, stopping at each node, hitting all four corners of the building, before reaching the main doors again several hours later.

Once there he finally turned and looked at Magnus directly. He dipped his head in some slight acknowledgement, straightened his cuffs, and his face shifted into something that was merely neutral and professional rather than granite. "There were no concerns to note, Mr. Bane. The wards have been refreshed, and the contract terms have been met."

"Thank you," Magnus managed, though he had to cough to get his voice to cooperate.

The High Warlock's face softened, a hint of something that wasn't quite surprise in his eyes, but Magnus wasn't sure what to call it instead. "You're very welcome."

He nodded again, slightly more sincerely, perhaps, though there still wasn't enough of an expression on his face to properly qualify, in Magnus' opinion, and then he turned and left.

Magnus blinked at the doors as they shut behind him, and let out one long slow exhale. His shoulders relaxed, and it was only now that his posture sagged that he realized he'd been extra tense the entire time, as if waiting for an attack that had never come.

sorry if this isn't ok to ask, but how did you go about working for games? do you need to build a good portfolio and then freelance it? or is it a stable job at a certain company? or both? and did you learn 3d by yourself or did you go to some school? do you need to do concept art to do 3d art? i find im not very creative and get so overwhelmed but i'd love to do both, is that a sign i just shouldnt look into it? how did you choose this career path? have a good day

hey anon! It’s totally ok to ask! I’m pretty swamped with work atm so this is a refreshing change haha

How did you go about working for games? Do you need to build a good portfolio and then freelance it? I guess I got my foot in the games industry when I first got into art school. I was in a 1 year program for game art, with the program focusing mostly in 3D art. During that time, I had my first taste of making 3d art, did a bunch of game engine stuff, and even made some assets for movie quality stuff. As for the portfolio, it is extremely important to have one. Every interview I have had they would pull my portfolio up and ask me my thoughts, process, considerations, challenges, etc. for each piece. A good portfolio website to use is ArtStation. I am not sure which part of the game dev career you’d like to pursue, but this is mostly true for the art side. I cannot speak for the software engineering facet of game dev. Is it a stable job at a certain company? or both? It can be a stable job, but it most often is not. This career is notorious for not being unionized, as well as mostly contract work. Work hours can be brutal, depending on the company, time of year, etc. My time at EA was a bit of an outlier, we had amazing benefits (including dental and vision), a gym, physiologists, personal trainers, nutritionists, a VERY healthy cafeteria, extremely diverse teams, and just generally really good with work/life balance. I barely worked any overtime at EA, if I did I was paid and also got free food. If the team was doing a ‘team overtime’ to meet a deadline, our manager would get us catering lol. Also every Friday we had a buffet and drinks (including alcohol). HOWEVER, this was short lived as I was on a 1-year contract. It’s sort of an unspoken thing where everyone is fighting to get that spot for contract renewal. You get this sense of dread the months leading to your contract termination, having to look for a new job as soon as you can, or choosing to rest because of burnout.

Did you learn 3d by yourself or did you go to some school? Like I said above, I went to school. It was hella expensive, and sometimes it feels like it wasn’t worth it. But I got the connections I needed there, and learned the ropes with much needed support. I never did 3d before I went to school for it. It was more of a ‘fuck it’ moment for me (my mental health was not the best then), and luckily I found myself loving my work. School is good if you need structure, or like you mentioned, if you feel overwhelmed by all the information out there. I think of my time at school as a first step for me. I did not learn everything I needed to know to get a job in the industry through school, but rather, I had to do my own research using the tools I was provided with by my time in school. It is a continuous learning activity; you will be learning new things until you die. Technology improves so quickly, you have to be quick on your feet and be willing to learn entire new workflows.

I find im not very creative and get so overwhelmed but i'd love to do both, is that a sign i just shouldnt look into it? That’s prefectly fine! I have not worked on an original piece in years haha. I find I’m not creative in the traditional sense where I can come up with ideas on the fly and imagine things up. I’m creative in the way I solve problems and think up ways to achieve certain effects/looks, and it bleeds into how I make tools as well. (ever see me posting 2D art? yea I barely do that bc I suck at it) You should absolutely look into it if it gives you joy. The thrill of seeing something you make move or come alive on screen is amazing. Being overwhelmed is normal, and is completely expected. There’s so much information out there, it takes a lot of time just to sort through it, so take your time. Just be careful of being paralyzed by it into inaction; this has happened to me so many times. Just remember to take baby steps. One tip I can give you that I haven’t seen said out there: make your own documentation. I have a whole ass google doc of just everything I know about 3D art. It’s got sections for Zbrush, Maya, Unreal Engine, Marmoset Toolbag, Arnold, Python, etc. I add to it every time I learn something new. And believe me, you will learn something new almost every day. How did you choose your career path? What can I say? I just love making things pretty :) I come from a third world country, and the prospects for making art were... bad. I did not want to get stuck living a life working a job I hated, so I came to Canada to get into this career. Starting salaries vary, but to me, they were good enough and I had my eyes set on that. If tuition was X amount for me, my starting salary was close to 2X :)

I started in games, but am now working on a TV show for [redacted]. It’s been such a fun (but very stressful ride), and I hope to continue doing this for the forseeable future.

I'm going to rant so you've been warned.

Almost the entire world is in lockdown due to Covid-19 and I have some things I want to say because I'm sick of seeing and hearing what's going on. People need to cop on and grow up and come together at this time but clearly they're not getting that so here's a few things I'd like to say and a few ideas I have for any politicians who may see this in whatever country they may be.

First and foremost I can't believe I have to say this but this pandemic affects everyone equally. To anyone who says otherwise you are wrong. Covid-19 does not care what race you are, what age you are, how much money you have or whether you're unemployed or employed.

Why am I saying this? I've heard people over the past month say things like 'Jobseekers aren't affected by this they don't deserve additional support'. Now I'm paraphrasing there but you get the idea. I'm going to break this down by explaining the effects of Covid-19 on my life.

I am 21 years old, I fortunately do not have underlying health issues, however my mother is 60 years of age, she has survived cancer not once, but twice, she has fibromyalgia and other underlying health issues. My father is type 2 diabetic, he has high blood pressure and when he gets a common cold he ends up in hospital under the advice of his doctor because it affects him so badly. My step grandmother is 76 years of age she also has diabetes and other health issues. My stepmother and stepsister are healthy fortunately, however, I now can't visit any of them as I run the risk of bringing Covid-19 into their homes because they are high risk.

I am a jobseeker. I recieve jobseekers allowance from the Department of Social Protection. I was made redundant on January 21st this year as the company I was working for closed. I did not apply for Jobseeker's Allowance until mid February. You may be asking why, because I was doing everything I could to find a new job before making a claim. I applied for each and every job I was qualified for and brought CVs to many local businesses. I do not want to be a jobseeker, I want to be employed and working. I allowed myself a 6 week deadline for finding a job when I applied for allowance. This was to motivate me and push me to find work and also because I cannot afford the independence I earned on Jobseeker's Allowance. This 6 week deadline has now been and gone, I am still unemployed and I'm unsure where the money for next months bills is going to come from. Due to Covid-19 there are fewer jobs, the jobs that are available have too many applicants and therefore the odds of me finding a job are now slimmer than they were.

On April 30th I am going to have a decision to make and it's a tough one. I know the Government have applied a no evictions policy for the pandemic but I have to face the reality of this. On April 30th I am most likely going to have to give my landlord 30 days notice on my tenancy. I will not be able to afford to continue living where I am as I am beyond May. Now this may seem fine to you but let me break that down. If I have to give up my apartment I have to move home to either my mums or dads. I don't drive a car and therefore would have to ask them to assist me in moving, putting them at risk. I run the risk of bringing this virus to them even if I find a way to move home without them leaving self isolation. If I do move home I will be living in the countryside and be in self isolation until a vaccine for Covid-19 is created. This will mean I won't be able to travel to job interviews.

I have already had to give up my motorcycle and cancel the insurance to prioritise bills, I am contacting my bank in order to request a hold on my loan repayments to prioritise bills. I have cancelled all online subscriptions to prioritise bills. I will most likely have to get out of my phone and internet contracts to prioritise bills. I have cut back on habits (smoking) and reduced my food intake and cost to prioritise bills.

I am a jobseeker. I am affected by the Covid-19 pandemic as equally as those who were in employment. I do not receive any additional support.

Secondly and I know I've already written a LOT, if you've read to this point thank you. Has the world gone mad? We as an entire global population are in a pandemic and for some reason people don't seem to understand this. In Ireland (I’m Irish so it’s my example) in the past few weeks there have been multiple murders, stabbings and burglaries, domestic fires and arsons, 2 ATMs robbed in Dundalk, 20 rubbish bins set alight in Dublin, joyriders destroying pitches, multiple high speed car chases some of which ended in collision, and god knows what else that didn’t reach the media. But the worst of all to me is the people going around spitting and coughing on Gardaí and civilians and on shop stock. We are all in a time where we need to come together and be strong in our homes, our communities and our society. Those who are committing offences at this time, in my opinion, should receive an automatic 1 year prison sentence, without hesitation. People are afraid, we are anxious and unsure of when this will end, people should not be causing more upset and unrest at this time, those who see this as a time to commit crimes should receive additional punishment.

Continuing on this point, I ask people to be vigilant not only due to Covid-19 but due to the hooligans who appear to believe this is Grand Theft Auto. I have seen posts online where people are hanging ropes from overpasses on motorways, at the end of these ropes there are metal bars at windscreen height, to the people doing this, what on earth is wrong with you? The people who are travelling at the moment are putting their lives at risk to care for the sick or elderly, to leave their families and work in shops so you have food for your families, they’re truckers who get that food to the shops, they are putting their lives and the lives of their families at risk and you fools are trying to injure or possibly kill them? You too should, in my opinion, receive an immediate 1 year prison sentence. This is one example within many but this to me is the most disgusting I have seen in recent times, it truly boiled my blood.

Now I’m going to stop focusing on the negative affects of Covid-19 and point out some of the truly incredible moments we have seen in the past few weeks. Firstly the Italians singing from their balconies, millions in donations to support and protect healthcare professionals, the British on the streets clapping and showing their gratitude to the NHS, the Irish following suit for the HSE. Never mind moments the bravery and selflessness of those essential workers, you are not just essential in the time of pandemic, you are essential all the time and I truly hope that this pandemic makes the world see this and you receive greater appreciation in the future.

Now I have an idea I want to suggest to governments around the world. An idea I had while walking to do my essential shopping this afternoon, pedestrian etiquette should be called upon during this time. By this I mean walk as we drive, walk in the directional flow of traffic where possible, I know some footpaths are closed due to works being done. I believe it would be beneficial for governments to suggest that when walking we walk on the side of the street in the same directional flow of traffic as we are walking. This meaning people will be less likely to have to pass one another on narrow footpaths allowing social distancing.

2020 BJD Resolutions

Here we go, doll/craft related goals for this year! Unlike my plan to do a ’monthly goals’ approach with my art-- which I am much more aggressively ambitious with-- this is a hobby blog, so the pressure on myself to complete everything on this list is way less. I guess I see this more as a checklist to track my progress versus any kind of self-imposed deadlines.

There will probably be more popping up here as I go as well, so I may come back to this post and update it periodically!

March: She has a faceup, wig, eyes, and one outfit.

Buy her dragonfly wings (or try out making some)

I think I’ll try buying first, I’ve had my eye on a few etsy listings..

Design a few key outfit pieces for her wardrobe!

Tights/leggings, a tunic, a skirt or two, a vest, and 1 pair of shoes.

Maybe make her a tiny leaf hammock. I say maybe, because I’m not sure where I’d put it.

Pisces: She has a faceup, wig, and eyes.

Do I wanna bother with hybridizing again? Would the RS double jointed bodies work for her head size despite being 1cm bigger? And do I wanna put money into that or just focus on my other wishlist dolls?

DEITIES Update 10/29/18

(Okay wow it's been so long since I've used this banner, I nearly forgot I even had it sdjfksk)

Anyway hey everyone! I think we're due for another brief update, mostly regarding what I'll be up to as this long af year draws to a close. Details are under the cut, but the gist involves an askbox hiatus following this week, to give myself some time for some overdue housekeeping, and maybe some new art and content.

DEITIES ASKBOX & CC HIATUS (Don't worry it's temporary!!)

Might as well put that upfront, but yes rest assured this hiatus is meant to be a temporary one! Those of you who have been following the blog since the beginning may already be aware of my occasional calls to close the askbox, especially after askbox themes and when the volume becomes a bit high.

In this case, it's partially due to the increasing volume of asks I receive; partially due to some new (exciting???) things that are demanding my attention offline; but mostly to just take a break. You all have been asking some very good questions lately, and I appreciate the thought you put in them! But writing thorough answers takes time, and I need to reclaim a bit more of mine in the evening to work thru some projects and online housekeeping thru the end of this year. Rather than rush thru writing my answers for incoming questions, I think a solid break will be more ideal.

For those of you who have some last questions to ask me, I'll keep the ask box open until the end of Thursday, November 1, 11:59pm EDT (Note, this doesn't grant permission to spam the askbox, especially if you'd asked multiple questions already, so be mindful of that please!) After that deadline, I'll close the askbox on tumblr and answer the remainder in my inbox by this weekend, before officially going on break. This way no new questions will sit in the inbox, and I can try to avoid leaving people from wondering whether or not I'll answer them (for the record, I answer about 90% of questions I receive, the 10% that I don't can be explained in the FAQs -- including the very end regarding reasons you may not get an answer).

I'll also try to revisit the DEITIES CuriousCat briefly to see if any pressing questions are there, but any non-dire questions in my inbox will have to wait until I'm off hiatus (another note, I can't pause or close my askbox on CC, so you could technically still submit questions there, just know that I will not log in to check my inbox during this break).

As for how long this break will last? No idea yet; at least thru the end of November, but possible longer depending on how things progress with certain events in the works or if I otherwise feel like extending it. Until then, I ask for your patience until I'm ready to step back into the AMA saddle, so to speak. And fee free to review the FAQs and past questions around the blog to see if any question you might have have been addressed.

TUMBLR & WEBSITE HOUSEKEEPING

On that note, just because I'm taking a break from the project askbox won't mean I'll leave this blog neglected, far from it. At the very least I'm hoping to use part of this break to update a few pages on the project tumblr -- including the FAQs, some of my tagged content, and recording some of my askbox and CC responses as a reference/backup, which I haven’t done in months o)-----< It'll all be done in the background tho, but it should hopefully help visitors find more of the updated/recent info regarding this blog and the project.

If possible, I will also be working to finally migrate the placeholder site for DEITIES -- http://deitiesofduat.com -- to work with WordPress, which is one of the software I've been learning to use from my online classes. I eventually need to use WordPress to construct the full site for the comic, and migrating my placeholder on the system should at least help get the technical set up out of the way. Self-hosting is such a chore you guys. I can do it cuz I like working with WordPress but it's still, a chore.

Either way, that URL may not function for a bit whenever I sit down to migrate it, but it should only be temporary until I get it to work properly.

CONTENT UPDATES WHEN...?

YEAH ABOUT THAT... cuz I'm fully aware that the blog has had less art and other content over the past few months. All I can say rn is that until I address some huge priorities in my offline life, content for DEITIES will remain irregular. That's the reality, unfortunately, but I'm still determined to see this project through, and I'm optimistic about some recent development that should hopefully help me re-establish my pace. You'll all know when I'm ready to share the news.

That said, I will still try to work on some bits of DEITIES artwork during the remainder of the year, once I have the time and drive for it. I'm also quietly working on updates to playlists on the DEITIES Spotify account (not many atm cuz I'm still evaluating some tracks in like, placeholder lists atm haha--).

There are also a few other fun things I'm playing with as well, that I can hopefully realize and share with everyone soon. I'll making any other necessary updates as they come, but until then take care everyone, and enjoy your Halloween!

Day 47 -

I started a new chapter in my weight loss jouney 47 days ago, I set myself the goal of loosing about 15kg in 99 days. I want to reach my UGW before doing back to uni.

To achieve this I set myself a maximum daily intake of 1000 calories, I have been doing that and noting down my weight as well as daily intake everyday. I count absoltely anything and everything that I use and use a scale to messure out every ingredient. I'm at a point where I should be weighing about 52kg on the 13th of July but my morning scale weight today was 55.1kg. I do think that to a certain degree my scale is off due to constipation. I had a binge on the 6th and 7th and took 2 laxatives yesterday. About 2 weeks ago I dropped my daily intake to a maximum of 800 calories.

I don't know, I just feel like I'm not loosing fast enough. My data shows that I should have lost nearly 6kg by now but the scale only says 4.4kg. I do think it's off but I don't know how much. My data has been off for a while, at one point it was hormonal imbalances due my period which got severly delayed. Then I got hella bloated and was wondering why only to get my period. I just finished it yesteday. My morning scale weight in said 55.1kg but after drinking a lot it now shows 55.0kg. The laxatives are still doing their job.

It should also be noted that if I binge, I do offset those calories. So on the 5th and 6th I binged, for both those days my total came out to be almost 8K calories, my daily goal was 800 per day, meaning that it was 1600 for a total of two days. So 8,000-1600= 6400 that I have to go below my goal deficit over the next while so my average events out to 800 calories per day or less. If I don't binge, i ignore any additional deficit that I create. I have been binge free for 3, almost 4 days now but idk, I just wish the number on the scale was lower. Yesterday my intake was, 163, the day before that 316 and the day before that 493 so I'm defenitively not going anywhere close to 500 while fixing my binge session. Maybe I'm a bit paranoid.

In your personal opinion, do you think I weight more than I should atm (per the goals I set myself) or do you think it's proably still bloating and water weight. I'm just freaking out and have been for a good while. Before the binge I was getting numbers in the lower 54kg range. But idk.

Maybe my TDEE is a lot lower than I thought it was? Like 6 months to a year ago I took up all my data for my intake and weight loss and worked out my TDEE to be about 2000-2100 based on the idea that 1kg of fat is 7700 calories, but maybe it lowered recently? Idk. I'm proably just freaking out for no reason. I just won't want to not reach my curreny UGW before my deadline. Anyways, debt time:

Yesterday it was: 5302 Today I had: 736-312 = 424 (800-424=376) So 5302 - 376 = 4926

Answers to the ask

So this is my answer to every ask of the “A Writer’s Ask Game” by agwitow that I reblogged just below.

Yes, I know, people are supposed to be the ones to send a number, and only then am I supposed to answer. But, since this blog has like, very, very limited interaction, and I had nothing to do, I answered them myself.

And I’m putting a time stamp on it: Wednesday 17/02/2021, because for some questions, in a week, it won’t be the same answer.

The Basics 1. Do you listen to music when you write?

I do, yes. I have a couple of playlists with songs – I know some people enjoy listening to music while they write, but only without any kind of lyrics. I don’t care either way. Some days it’s pre-enregistered playlists, others random, and others just piano.

2. Are you a pantser or plotter?

I’m mostly a plotter. I’ve tried to go pantser on a couple of stories (Pretty Boy is the last example that comes to my mind), but I end up knowing what I’ll put in the next chapters in advance. Even if it’s just the main plot point / scene.

3. Computer or pen and paper?

Computer. Except when I have writer block.

4. Have you ever been published, or do you want to be published?

I’ve never been published, and don’t plan on. I write my stories mostly for myself, and to me it’s a bit too over the top to, first, interest a publisher / editor, and then it would need lots of editing and… I don’t think I’m ready yet to see critics on my stories.

5. How much writing do you get done on an average day?

I have no idea xD I suppose I’m happy if I get 1.000 word a day, especially if it’s a day I only concentrate on writing. Sometimes it can be more, but sometimes it can also be nothing at all. On days I have other things to do, I’m happy if I can write one sentence more during the day :)

6. Single or multiple POV?

At the same time? Single. In a story? It depends. Some stories I’ve written in a single POV all along, others I switched between chapters, and others within chapters, with a distinction between the “parts”.

7. Standalone or series?

Um, series as in several “books”? If so, there’s this story I finished last year. At first, it was supposed to be one single book, but things progressed as they did and so I chose to cut the overall, finished epic into three books. So it’s supposedly a series now.

Other than this, I usually cram everything up in one story.

8. Oldest WIP

Oldest oldest? I started a story called L’année scolaire (= School Year) when I was like 10. It’s unfinished, so I suppose I can consider it as a WIP. Other than that, if I’m talking about posted fic, it’s a Harry Potter time-travel fanfic called Une nouvelle chance de vivre (= A New Chance At Living). Same, the fic has maybe ten years now (damn, time flies) and has been untouched for… about ten years I believe xD

9. Current WIP

I have several! On my AO3 profile, there’s Sunkissed (an Achilles x Patroclus Omegaverse ff), The Bravest Belief of All (Amandi) (a Peter Pan x Wendy Darling canon divergence from OUAT) and I Desire You (or worse) (which is an original work with original character that I’ve just started posting) that I update regularly.

There are more on my computer, much more than I can type here…

10. Do you set yourself deadlines?

Not at all. Because I wouldn’t respect them, and it would make me stress.

The Specifics 11. Books and/or authors who influenced you the most

Victor Hugo is the main one that comes to my mind atm. I love the way he writes and what he writes about. There’s Emile Zola’s Au Bonheur des dames, too, which is amazing, one of the best books I know of. And, for the beauty of language and the sheer poetry literally pouring from every single word, Cyrano de Bergerac by Edmond Rostand is. breathtaking. I don’t know if they influenced me, because it sounds a bit pretentious to say that one can find some of these authors in my stories if they look closely, but they definitely represent what I aspire to.

12. Describe your perfect writing space

In a silent room, except there’s music (I know, it’s paradoxical). I have my computer and my head is resting (I mean, I don’t have anything urgent to do, it’s all done and behind me for the day) and I can concentrate on the scene I’ve been imagining for a couple of days / weeks / months / years (pick one).

13. Describe your writing process from idea to polished

Usually I have an idea, I play it in my head over and over again until I really like it and I have a couple of things found out (like, scenes or dialogues or narration – depends if the idea is about a story or just a single scene). Then, I write it. Admittedly, the polishing happens mostly when I play it over and over in my mind until it clicks or sticks.

14. How do you deal with self-doubts?

I usually listen to them, because it means there’s something that’s nagging me about a scene, a moment. So I go reread it, I think back on it – what can I change? How can I formulate it in a different way? – and I change it until I’m satisfied with it.

I experience a (lot) of self-doubt at the moment, with the first three chapters of IDY. I chose to post them, but I’m not entirely sure I’d be ready if people began to hate them or find horrible flaws with them. that makes me doubt whether it was a good idea or not, but I know that I can always delete them if it really goes downhill.

15. How do you deal with writer’s block?

I stop writing. For a couple of days, usually, to let my brain the time to relax and focus on something else. Then, I sit back before my computer and I open another word document – like a blank page. I copy paste the scene I’m stuck on, and I rewrite it under, while using a couple of sentences I feel are good. I repeat the process until the words flow back again.

(This sounds a lot like a cooking recipe xD)

For the real, unbreachable writer’s block (like, if the above didn’t work), I try to focus on other stories. If that doesn’t help kick the inspiration back (like for No, but I do – even though the writer’s block was cemented by GOT’s last season but that’s another matter entirely), I push the story to the back of my mind and I give it up.

16. How many drafts do you need until you’re satisfied with a project?

As many as necessary until I’m satisfied with myself. I can’t give a number.

17. What writing habits or rituals do you have?

I imagine the scene beforehand, I listen to music, I write on computer… I can’t think of any other writing habit I have atm.

18. If you could collaborate with anyone, who would it be, and what would you write about?

I don’t think I could collaborate with anyone, sorry - -’ When I have an idea for a story, I’m excited with writing every single part of it, so I don’t think it’s for me.

19. How do you keep yourself motivated?

With the scenes I want to write.

20. How many WIPs and story ideas do you have?

At the moment (meaning the ones brewing in my mind): 11.

The Favourites 21. Who is/are your favourite character(s) to write?

It depends with the story. I liked Weston in Pretty Boy (I like him too in I Desire You), and Wendy in Amandi.

22. Who is/are your favourite pairing(s) to write?

Weston/Edmund. They’re my OTP for now.

23. Favourite author

I don’t have a favourite author, I search for fics / stories mostly.

24. Favourite genre to write and read

Romance.

25. Favourite part of writing

I love writing dialogues, especially when the characters continue to talk on their own and I’m just transcribing everything and the conversation ends up very different from what I imagined.

26. Favourite writing program

None, I just write on Word.

27. Favourite line/scene

That’s impossible to choose! xD

On a writing’s perspective only, I’ll say the end part of chapter 3 in I Desire You (or worse). When I reread it and I could feel what the character is feeling / does (I’m being vague on purpose because I haven’t posted it yet), I knew I had to post it somewhere. I don’t know, I’m just really proud of it (and have the most self-doubt over people’s reaction, which is – as always – very logical of me).

28. Favourite side character

In I Desire You, I like Lucy.

29. Favourite villain

I don’t think I’ve ever written many villains. Ah, yes, Peter Pan in my OUAT fic. He’s a villain, it works.

30. Favourite idea you haven’t started on yet

I’ve been beginning a lot of WIP at the moment, precisely so I could start putting down all the ideas I wanted, so I don’t really know what to answer to that…

The Dark 31. Least favourite part of writing

Writing description of settings. I don’t really like how I write those.

32. Most difficult character to write

Edmund. No hesitation.

33. Have you ever killed a main character?

No, and I never intend to. I want my characters to be happy and alive.

34. What was the hardest scene you ever had to write?

Chapter 3 of I Desire You? Or maybe the chapter 2.

Or the beginning of Amandi, which depicts the Peter / Fiona relation.

35. What scene/story are you least looking forward to writing?

Um, none at the moment :)

The Fun 36. Last sentence you wrote

I understand how he feels.

But I’ll probably change it. I’m not sure yet. It’s for IDY.

37. First sentence of your current WIP

Well, I have three, so I’ll put the three.

A frustrated scream would have torn the eerie silence and thunderous sound of waves if Peter had any strength left in him to scream anymore. For Amandi

“Where’re y’all running to?” For IDY

Patroclus’ lip trembled when they pinned the crown to his hair. For Sunkissed.

38. Weirdest story idea you’ve ever had

Oof, lots. I’ve often imagined confronting two versions of characters. Like, take characters, usually from period pieces or in mindsets that are very patriarchal, and make them see another version of themselves, usually in Omegaverse, in a sort of Harry Potter pensieve or television setting, like they just watch this alternate universe version of themselves as they go on their daily lives. And then I imagine all the ways this character would first be horrified / angered / dismissive of that version of themselves that they’d judge weaker because they’d be Omegas, and then, slowly, they see that they’re really badass and yk worthy of consideration, respect etc. Not just them, but all their mates etc. would too, as well. And then they would come out as this better person, who aren’t as prejudiced as they used to be.

39. Weirdest character concept you’ve ever had

I don’t know, I think it kind of overlap with the precedent question? Anyway, my characters are (only) plain, normal humans. Or, well, there was one time I had an idea to write a story with elves à la Tolkien, but it’s not really a weird character concept (or at all really xD)

40. Share some backstory for one of your characters

Well, all my characters’ important backstories end up being revealed, so I’m not gonna spoil anything here…

I’ll take Curly from Amandi. He grew up in an orphanage, a poor one, which didn’t have proper beds (hence why he calls them pockets, because they look like pockets). He has no memory of his parents because they separated before his birth and his mother died in birth. He comes from a magical land (since we’re talking about an OUAT AU).

The Rest of It 41. Any advice for new/beginning/young writers?

Write what you want to read.

42. How do you feel about love triangles?

I’m mixed. I’m not a fan of them, but I wrote one once, although it was a bit special because it looked like that: Person A is in love with Person B, and vice versa, Person C loves Person A and Person C (and the entire world) is convinced Person A is in love with them.

43. What do you do if/when characters don’t follow the outline?

I just go with it. They know better than me xD

44. How much research do you do?

A lot, but it’s mostly on little details. Like, not wars or political situation of the country at the time period, but more like were oil lamps still used for that class of population in said year, and can you snuff them out by turning the button (like in a slide sort of way, I’m not sure how to translate it precisely in English, but in my head it’s crystal clear).

45. How much world building do you do?

I do a lot. When I write a story, I like to know every little detail I can.

46. Do you reread your own stories?

Yes. That’s the main reason why I write them, to be true.

47. Best way to procrastinate

By searching for aesthetic pics on Pinterest. That thing can take hours and you never see them fly. It’s incredible. Worse than Youtube. It takes you from picture to picture to picture without you noticing. Amazing.

48. What’s the most self-insert character/scene you’ve ever written?

I give a little bit of myself to every character I write about. Be it opinions, thoughts, childhood memory or taste. For example, Weston doesn’t like chocolate (he hates it with a passion) because I think chocolate has a disgusting taste (and because he never had the occasion of eating any as a kid).

49. Which character would you most want to be friends with, if they were real?

Weston, because he’s friendly and extraverted, and I wish I could be more of both, and I imagine that being his friend would make me mimic him in certain ways.

Oop, so Madeline went bye bye without hitch. And Mitch lol sort of popped off a bit which turned out rub some people the wrong way.

Well as long as it doesn’t endanger me, it’s ok. Except for the fact that Michael brought up my name to Julia as a potential target just because we haven’t had good talks.

Honestly tho, talking to Michael is hard because he’s like a robot or whatever. He really is a big blue robot or whatever.

Right now, I think I’m in a good spot to not be that worried on Michael. I’ve got an alliance with Jason and Julia. Though we haven’t solidified a duo or whatever, Jared and I are working together as well probably. I’m getting closer with Ali and Benji and I have had talks of watching each other’s back.

So far the potential targets if we lose are Mitch and Noah. I have talks with Mitch and I think he’s sort of a lose cannon but right now he trusts me I think so yeah. People are leaning towards Noah because he talks the least with people.

But I do hope we win immunity, UgH!! I blame Drew for not putting me on a dominating tribe grrrr where’s the monte Rosa winning streak power when you need it.

AHHHHHH BEEEP BOOOP BEEEP BOOP. This twist sucks. There is a power dynamic that is going on. Julia, Ben , Ali , and I are in an alliance. Seperataly though. I don't think they are aware of how much strategy I talk with Julia (which is how we want it). It seems Ian Jason are the biggest threats since they are liked and have numbers. BUT I CANT TAKE THEM OUT BECAUSE OF THE TWIST AHDHEUEJIDKD. So it seems Mitch is the target but I can't let Ian and Jason stay too long otherwise I am fucked. So last tribal went super smooth. Madeleine bye girl, but you were a ticking time bomb and you needed to go. And you also threw MY precious name out to Jared. In my first confessional I said I didn't want you here, and I got what I wanted. Now we are on this round. A puzzle challenge for immunity? Seriously? This has me FUCKED up boo. But I don't know weather to worry or not about tribal council. Last round, after I stirred the pot a bunch for the Madeleine vote she had an elaborate plan to get Mitch out that I myself pressured her into doing. I let Mitch know about her plan and at tribal shit got interesting. He blew the fuck up on the girl. And this was beautiful. It put a target on his back. So I might just be in the clear. His name will definitely be brought up just for that. This tribe doesn't like crazy explosive people (lol me in crossroads). But I also have gotten so far on this idol board, I might have the chance to snatch that bitch up. Lets pray everything goes well for me!!!

I realize in hindsight that im coming off as really mean in my confessional, but it was just like,,, in the moment? Yk??? A more concise version - usually when people like JJ fly high and take control early on, people get mad and they crash and burn really quick. So as much as it might break my heart, I might have to let that happen.

Forgot to mention thoughts on relationship statuses atm: Jules says she trusts me Alex says he trusts me Mo says he trusts me JJ says he trusts me Tom is iffy but I feel like we have a stronger relationship? Especially if he’s closer with JJ (which I personally believe he is) he’ll feed him info that’ll go back to me I have a good relationship with evan for the most part ? We talk on and off but we’re both just busy lol Caeleb my grandson/angel and I have a great relationship - we talk about Pokémon a lot Willow and I are iffy but like a fun iffy And David is the most innactive, but we bond over not talking on calls sometimes

So first things first thank GOD we won immunity I was not getting good vibes from people so I think I would been gone. Anyhoot, I definetly feel like there is an alliance already formed between Tom and JJ for sure and then possibly Jones Jules and lets throw in Alex, Those 5 seemed to be so comfortable and non scrambly this past tribal that im SUS. Going into this challenge wowie a math puzzle, not good for me and it showed! I definitely think we are losing now so I really have to push the vote for like Evan maybe because a bitch wants to stay and he's probably more inactive than I. Listen guys I really want to be on more but as Rihanna said I just gotta Work Work Work Work Work Work so that's that on that. I just hope they let this bitch stay!

Okay so let's get INTO this:

I know that my biggest weakness is the fact that I don't do a great job at times of talking to people. Ever since Day 1 though I've been making a solid effort to speak to every single person on my tribe two or three times every day.

So let's start with the first reward challenge. I tried really hard because I wanted to make a good first impression challenge wise. I feel like if you put in a solid performance in the first challenge, your tribe will be more understanding if you struggle in a future challenge.

As soon as I saw the flag part of the first immunity challenge, I knew that we were going to probably lose it no matter what, and there was strategy behind me wanting to take it on. Everyone on my tribe was already hyping up the fact that the other tribe had that part in the bag, so I knew that if I put in a solid effort and lost, it would be seen as "He stepped up for us and tried hard even though he had no shot" rather than "he fucked it up for us". I had to step on Madeleine's toes and kind of be rude to make sure that I got to do the flag, but that didn't really concern me since nobody seemed to like her anyway?

Now when it came to the first vote of the season, pretty much the whole damn tribe told me they wanted to do Madeleine. I think the fact that she really didn't talk to anyone until she NEEDED to is what played a major part in her elimination. Honestly, I didn't really like her at all LMAO, so I didn't mind seeing her go home.

The fact that Madeleine was already basically screwed and confirmed to go home was great bc it gave me the opportunity to take advantage of that situation for myself and build up my trust/credibility with other people. Madeleine came to me just a couple of hours before the voting deadline with her plan to get a group of people to vote against Mitch and send him home. I basically just was like "yasss I agree that's a great plan sis omg you're MIND". I asked for a list of who her 'numbers' were before agreeing to vote with her, and of course with her being desperate, she had no choice but to comply. Sis sent me a whole ass list of her alleged allies, and I was gagged becuase literally all of them had been shit talking her and saying that they were voting her out ALL DAY.

I took that information to Mitch and let him know about her plan, which gained me some brownie points and trust building with him. And then I went to the people she listed and was sort of like "Hey, I just wanted to let you know that she's going around telling people who she thinks you're voting for". Overall, I think that Madeleine's messiness really benefited me and my connections with the tribe.

Following Madi's elimination, if I had to rank my tribemates in terms of who I trust most to least, it would work out like this:

1) Julia 2) Ali 3) Mitch 4) Jason 5) Ben 6) Jared 7) Ian 8) Michael

Julia, Ali, Mitch & Jason interact with me the most. They always respond when I message them to start a conversation, and they aren't shy about hitting me up and initiating conversations. Ben, Jared & Ian won't really initiate conversations with me, but if I message them first they'll always message me back pretty quickly and engage with me. With Madeleine gone, Michel is now the most difficult for me to socialize with. Our conversations tend to die quickly if I don't put in maximum effort, which is kind of annoying, but I'll keep trying because I relaly don't want to end up like Madi and have everyone vote me out because I didn't try with them.

I'm kind of nervous at the moment with this vote just bc nobody is really giving me names yet? I'm hoping that the reason why is that they are waiting for tomorrow morning and just don't want to throw out names too early. I feel a bit like Sandra in the sense that as long as it's not me, I don't care. I'm not sacrificing my game for ANY of these people. That's what I love about these TS orgs; these people aren't my friends and I don't feel bad at all about sending any of them home LOL.

I'm really hoping to form a more formal alliance soon, but I want to be VERY cautious. I'd rather keep it small with just a few people that I trust not to go throwing me under the bus and leaking shit. An ideal situation would be me, Julia, Ali & Mitch as a strong foursome, but I need to talk to them separately as individuals first and try to figure out if any of them are already in group chats/alliances before I try to pull them into a commitment. The last thing I want is to try to form an alliance with people that are already set in other groups.

Anyway, I'm just going to try to continue being super social and hope that it plays out in my favor. BTW this twist is evil and I despite it, but I'm just going to have to work with it and adapt.

tom was really drunk and messaged me all these nice things so i really want to make him my ally now even though he's messy!!!

Well, today we probably lost the competition. Considering I was 4x faster than my maze partner. Willow doesn't know how to do math. David probably hasn't done his competition.

But in the same light, Evan and I did really well in our competitions. So, who knows? I might actually like to lose a competition. It would be interesting to see if people's heads are actually where they say they are.

I’m so upset, I always get fucking challenges in games that I CAN’T do I don’t know how to do it. Then we talk about our scores and Evan was like oh I did it in a minute but I could of done it quicker if I had a mouse and I’m just like I SCORED 16 MINUTES AND IM FINE BECAUSE I DIDN'T SCORE OVER TWENTY MINUTES.

In all seriousness I think I’m just stupid. Like when I was doing the challenge I was confident. I always go in with a “I’m gonna do great!” attitude and then I hear about how well the others did and it’s like getting hit by a car.

I'd also like to give an update on how I feel about everybody in this game.

Alex seems like he's the person I'd like to work with most, but he also seems the most hesitant to commit to any kind of long term alliance. Jules & Jones are really difficult to tell apart, but they're both lovely people. They seem to be super open to working together, and they both compliment me out the butt hole. Tom is really sweet. He seems to be very easily woo'd by attention and compliments, which shouldn't be too difficult. He's like. Super cute and very fun to talk to. Mo is cool, we share a lot of the same sense of humor, lots of the same references. Its also super comforting that he's also on the same timezone as I am. Evan seems really cool. I feel awful about never responding to his messages on time, which could really hurt my game. Caeleb is so fuckin cute. Like he's just a wholesome lil bean, I don't know how he's going to survive in such a cutthroat game like survivor. Maybe that's his strategy, have everyone underestimate him. Maybe he's scary and spooky. ^ Y'all really got me out here talking like a tumblrina.. Anyways, onto Willow. We seem to have the same conversation everyday and it never really goes anywhere. Awkwardddd. For David, whenever he does go on call, he never talks, and it just becomes this awkward silence, he really brings down tribe morale.

It seems like me and Julia created the vote once again, and AGAIN it is not traced back to us. Michael is under the impression he created the vote (lol) which is good for us, no blood on our hands. The reasoning behind planting Mitch and Michael as targets into people's head was to see how they scrambled so we could flush every alliance. We now know Mitch and Michael are working together. If all goes well it should be unanimous (if we even had to go to tribal).

We didn't go to tribal the first time around so David got to stick around. I have an odd feeling that we didn't win immunity so tonight will be the actual chance to do so. I really do think it'll be him because he's so inactive and I think its best to keep our tribe active and playing rather than scrambling and weak. Plus I have talked to many people about it so it would be a pretty big blindside if it was someone else and I would be left aghast!

JJ is clearly an influencer in the tribe, and I think he likes me and wants to keep me around and I am perfectly fine being a number in his game. At least for the time being, because at this point that's a strong strategy for me. I think I am making real genuine connections that I can profit from, both strategically but also personally because we have some fun people here :).

okay so this is the end, hold your breath and count to ten. i'm going home. i can just sense it, its my time and i can feel it hap-hap-happenin'. the vote is theoretically noah, but everyone is going quiet so i think its me. my takeaways are that i was too wishywashy, and left myself vulnerable due to my poor social game.

in other news, if the vote is noah i will be SHOCKED. i think we will probs swap too, so we will see. I think it wont matter this is the end, I'm going byebye very very soon rippy rip!

hey vera!! the thing about me is, with all of my interests (writing for the most part excluded because i set deadlines for myself with posting each week) they sort of ebb and flow in phases? like i’ll have an art phase for a week, then drop it and have a journalling phase for a month, then drop that to have an anime phase for four months and rinse and repeat. so, the point i’m getting at is i’m no longer in my anime phase atm?? i still love the genre (is it.. a genre??) and don’t get me wrong, i still wanna watch stuff like aot and jjk, but i just... could not be bothered to atm?? even though i love the two shows and i wanna know what happens. maybe i’m going through a burn out rn lol BUT all that talking and i haven’t answered your question.

i prefer shonen/seinen anime! i used to watch more shoujo when i was younger, but i’m not fond of romance as a whole rn? haha i know it’s odd because i write romance, but i find it a little boring most of the time?? as for anime i’ve watched:

i should definitely start watching anime again, but idk i just don’t feel like it these days, no matter how compelling the story is?? i will def get back into it someday though!! have you watched any anime??

On my blog today I’m very pleased to welcome Helen Barrell. They say that the truth is stranger than fiction and Helen’s book Poison Panic, described as ‘A clever mix of family history and true crime’ – Angela Buckley, is a great read if you’re looking for something ‘different‘. But I’ll let Helen do the talking . . .

Tell us something about yourself, Helen

Librarian by day, and author by night; I’m surrounded by books all the time. I’ve always written, but it’s my non-fiction Victorian true crime which has been published, while my fiction lingers on in a drawer. I live in Birmingham, with my partner and two cats, and drink far too much tea. I dress up in historical costume when the mood takes me. And I didn’t intend that to rhyme. Sorry.

Who or what has inspired you the most/ to become a writer?

My grandad, who used to sit me and my brother on his knee, and make up stories as they came to him. My favourite ones were about his time in France and Belgium during WW2 – he used to turn his adventures into ghost stories. Haunted, abandoned chateaux were his speciality, as well as his retelling of the haunting of Borley Rectory. Some people have commented that I write how I speak, and perhaps it’s that storytelling courtesy of my grandad which is behind that. There were always books in our house when I was growing up, and I loved going to our local library. At some point, I made the connection between the stories that people tell with their voices, and the stories people tell by writing them down.

When you’re not dreaming about poison (!) describe your typical writing day I fit my writing around my job, so I tend to write in the evening, heading up to my desk as soon as I get home from work. I manage to fit in two hours of writing that way. I spend chunks of my weekends writing as well. I’m a bit of a hermit, really! I will sometimes write during my lunch hour or if I get an idea that wakes me up early, I’ll give up trying to get back to sleep and spend some time writing early in the morning. I commute to and from the day job on foot, and I find walking a wonderful way to get lost in my thoughts. So “writing” happens then, too. When deadlines loom, I take holiday from work to write. Recently I took a day’s annual leave in order to work on my book’s index – yes, an index. Such are the woes of the non-fiction author.

I love Ripper Street so this is all beginning to sound right up my strasse. Helen, you seem very media-savvy, having produced your own videos etc, so, here’s my next question:

Social Networking – a help or a hindrance? I’m never entirely sure how well social media helps to sell books, but I will say that it’s an excellent way to get in touch with other writers. Getting to know other writers is an excellent way to share your pain! Twitter is even worth using purely as a writing tool: that focus required to fit what you need into the character limit is good discipline for saying much with little.

Tell us a little about your new novel – Fatal Evidence – A surgeon and chemist at Guy’s Hospital in London, Professor Alfred Swaine Taylor used new techniques to search the human body for evidence that once had been unseen. A toxicologist, he could also identify blood on clothing and weapons, and used hair and fibre analysis to catch killers. He gave Charles Dickens a tour of his laboratory, and Wilkie Collins owned copies of his books. For Dorothy L. Sayers, Taylor’s books on forensic science were ‘the back doors to death’.

. . . and finally, Helen – and tips for fledgeling authors? There’s no point sitting about not-writing, telling everyone “I’d really like to be a writer,” or “I can picture myself musing at a typewriter by a picture window.” Just get on with it! Whatever it takes – fire up your laptop, open “notes” on your phone, grab a pen and paper, the back of an envelope, or a clattering old typewriter if you really must, and write. Even if it’s a few lines of conversation, a description, a plot outline. Something.Get some words down. They might not be amazing words, but get them down. And then you’re not not-writing, you’re writing, and you’ve set your foot on the path to being an author.

I hear you, sister ! Thank you for coming onto my blog, it’s been fascinating and, who knows, I might be knocking on your door for advice if I give up writing romance and go over to the ‘dark side’. (Helen kindly took these photos of Tall, Dark and Kilted when she visited Edinburgh recently.)

Fandom Snowflake Challenge: Day 3

In your own space, set some goals for the coming year.

I've already posted my 2017 goals, so I'm just going to expand a bit on my fannish ones :)

- Post 100k words on AO3. This is the same goal I had last year, which I missed by almost 30k. Last year was not a good writing year overall, but I want to do better. My intention two years ago was to up my goal every year by 25-50k, but I've gotta get at least 100k as standard first!

- Finish more writing. Similar to above, or at least related, but this is more of an emphasis on the finishing aspect. I start way too many fics without finishing them and get even more ideas without getting them written, so i want to concentrate on that. I'll still be signing up for far to many exchanges, I'm sure, but I'm going to try to keep this goal in the forefront of my mind otherwise. The specific fics I'm looking to work on first are:

Expanded Yuletide 2016 fic. I had so much more outlined for this fic than I got to by the deadline and I really want to finish it. Needs more actual road tripping!

Overdue auction fic. I just recently realized I never wrote a fic I'd offered in a fandom auction about a year and a half ago and I fel so so bad about it. My life just went all kinds of crazy and it kept getting pushed to the backburner until it finally just fell in the fire I guess :/

FUF #1/WIP Big Bang 2016 fic. I am the worst mod bc I didn't complete my own big bang last year lol But I'm gonna! And hopefully before the next one, which is far sooner than I'd like...

More FUF fics. Related to the above. I want to do more in the FUF verse. It's a ridiculously convoluted SPN modern AU I'm ostensibly writing with a friend and it's probably more trouble than it's worth, but another friend bet we wouldn't write what we'd planned out and I'm determined to prove her wrong. Even if she probably doesn't even remember the bet anymore.

Interhouse Fest 2016 sequel. I wrote out a little "what happens next" in reply to a comment and got inspired lol It's not a popular ship and I doubt many if any would actually read the sequel, but I really like the idea.

Trans Harrisco fic. Someone on tumblr wondered why there weren't any Harrisco fics with trans Cisco or Harry and since this is one of my fave ships atm, I decided that yeah, that really needs to be a thing.

Blasphemous Bible fic. Does what it says on the tin, only probably even worse than you're thinking. I've been sitting on this idea for literally years and it's really time I got around to writing it. Look for it Christmas 2017!

Jenzekiel antagonistic daddy kink. Also been sitting on this idea for a couple of years and since this ship is virtually nonexistant, I decided why the fuck not. I will write something ridiculously self indulgent and I will enjoy myself lol
