born to two high schoolers who never married, firoj majidi and parvana banai. they were head over heels for each other - when firoj graduated he took up two jobs alongside community college to support their family, until parvana graduated and took on the arts.

growing up was tough - living in the city wasn’t cheap, parvana’s art rarely sold and the two often went without eating in order to provide for annabel. as a child she’d often wear hand-me-downs from extended family.

was taught to be a hard worker and it was reflected in her schoolwork - anna excelled in all her classes but especially english. her love for writing grew at a young age, and as a child she saved up enough money to buy herself proper journals.

the only thing that she grew more passionate towards than writing was ballet - she caught the image of girls flying through the air and landing on their toes in the window of a dance studio on a walk home from school one day and that was it - something clicked inside of her.

that same day she would spend hours prancing about their tiny apartment, trying to mimic what she’d seen. it was easy to spot the passion anna had for the dance - and within a few months they had saved up enough money for a month’s worth of lessons.

anna was ecstatic - her slippers were old and found in the back of a thrift store by an odd miracle, but she put her all into the lessons regardless. she was quick to pick up on each move, and by the end of the month it was clear that anna had a natural talent.

parvana picked up a job in order for them to keep affording the lessons, month after month - they weighed down on their pockets, but it kept anna happy.

flash forward a few years - life was good. money was still a struggle but they were tight knit.

or rather, anna thought they were tight knit.

firoj and parvana split up when anna was twelve - an event that rocked the young girl’s world, something that she couldn’t understand. they had kept up a front of love when anna was home from school or ballet - but behind doors, they had been growing apart.

anna viewed their separation as parvana running off with another man - an art collector who had a fascination with paravana’s paintings. she viewed this as the end of the world. she viewed this as the death of love.

when anna was twelve, she swore she would never fall in love - refused to believe in its existence. she couldn’t wrap her mind around the simple separation.

her father got a third job in order to keep up with payments, and anna pushed herself in both ballet and school - not being able to handle an empty apartment. she decided to get a job - to help ease her father, but was too young.

so anna decided to do what any average 12 year old would do. she started scamming people.

she’d sell store-bought lemonade as if it were homemade, stole ceramics from art class and sold them to neighbors. she found an old girl scouts uniform in the back of a goodwill and for the next month, she sold knock-off girl scout cookies from the dollar store - going door to door.

her personality had changed drastically - anna went from a sweet, optimistic girl with warm brown eyes and an infectious laugh to cold, calculated, and downright cruel. she knew what she wanted and how to get it.

she got an invitation to a prestigious private school, full scholarship, before she hit high school - originally wanted to reject it as the thought of being surrounded by new york’s richest teens was appalling, but their ballet program was a one-way ticket into the american ballet theatre. anna ultimately accepted the scholarship.

high school was immediately hell for her - pretentious rich kids who all shared a collective brain cell and her secondhand uniform being a prime target for them.

ballet got extremely competitive - anna was a threat to every dancer in their program, bullying and sabotage became standard - but anna retaliated when possible.

this all, however, suddenly stopped when anna picked up her latest scam: faking psychic. through a small network of ‘bees’ she’d pay to gather information (gossip, rumors, etc. etc.) she was able to accurately ~see~ into students’ past, present, and potentially future affairs. the money was very worth it.

from that point forward, people were intimidated by her.

when anna was 16 she was handpicked to join the american ballet theatre’s studio company, alongside 11 other lucky individuals. her dream from that point forward was to become the youngest principal ballerina for abt - and she was going to start by winning over the role of clara in their production of the nutcracker.

she was 17 when she was chosen, much to the dismay of the other girls. she had momentarily quit her ‘psychic’ business in order to dedicate the entirety of her time towards rehearsals & practice.

the final week before her first performance as clara, anna got into a car accident heading home after another tiresome rehearsal. knocked unconscious, anna woke up three days later with no recollection of the accident - and her leg freshly operated on.

it was a devastating event that should had killed her - maybe she would had been better off if it had - but instead, it had effectively destroyed any chances of her dancing professionally.

it took two months of extensive physical therapy for anna to walk again - now relying heavily on a cane.

with ptsd and depression weighing heavily on her shoulders, anna turned back to writing - mostly as a coping mechanism, but it soon became the fierce passion it once was when she was younger.

for the remainder of her high school life, anna dedicated the majority of her time towards recovery, her writing, and directing her school’s theatre productions. oh - and claiming that almost dying had given her the gift of mediumship. it wasn’t too far off from her psychic claims - her peers believed it well enough to either stay away, or pay her for a small amount of comfort.

decided to attend yates for their reputation despite her hatred for pretentious schools (very ironic because she herself is pretentious) & also. she had a scholarship <3 so.

in the midst of writing her first book that’s based heavily on her experiences as a low income student at a private school but like. she’s side-eying all these societies and seeing a Big Money Grab if she were to. write abt them instead

still can’t dance any longer, but she works as a ballet assistant for one of the dance instructors & still tends to barge her way into theatre rehearsals to <3 give her unwarranted opinion

she’s not the friendliest person. knows what she wants and how to get it, and will not hesitate to use people or push them out of her way in order to achieve her goals.

her cutthroat nature was the reason for her success in academics and dance - tends to intimidate the students in the ballet classes she helps out in.

horribly stubborn - if she’s got an idea of you already in her mind, then it’s hard to convince her otherwise.

still uses a cane - in fact, she can’t really walk without it - unless she wants to be in pain.

it’s sturdy, ornate, and pretty fucking solid. doubles as a weapon if need be - has definitely … hit people with it before, though she’s calmed down now that she’s a little older.

used to be very angry, very defensive as a teenager - is still the same, just �� less intense. will not hesitate to speak her mind and let her opinions known - especially in the face of injustice.

doesn’t really have the best … relationship with authority, mainly because of where she was raised and her con-artist businesses. tends to be snarky and sarcastic to anybody in charge - or really, anybody in general.

pretty distrusting, pretty emotionless on the outside, doesn’t like to be seen as weak or somebody to be pitied. keeps herself closely guarded and doesn’t really let others ‘inside’ due to her own comfort levels.

she’ll sleep around but dating is out of the question, for the most part - she’s been on a few blind dates, a few casual get-togethers - but she’s always the one to break things off. is more of a careful hook-up kind of gal.

still does her psychic medium business !! sometimes she wonders if she’s a bad person because of it - but ultimately, it’s on her customers for believing in all that nonsense anyway. anna herself is a skeptic - doesn’t believe in anything unless she can see it and feel it.

is actually … a pretty sentimental person, doesn’t take anything she’s got for granted, and is hugely appreciative of her father. sends him money when she can. hasn’t spoken to her mother in years - pretty sure she’s got a step / half-sibling or two but she’s never met them.

a lone wolf and likes it that way, but she isn’t super opposed to friendship - even if she won’t necessarily call anybody a friend. appreciates others who are similar to her - got their head on right, and knows what they want in life.

has a pretty bad fear of driving - will uber if she needs to go anywhere - even then, being in cars makes her pretty anxious. still has ptsd-induced panic attacks, though she’s managed them pretty well.

doesn’t really do drugs! will smoke weed to ease the ache and her nerves, but otherwise she only takes what is prescribed for her. doesn’t drink anything hard, either. big fan of beer and wine. probably gets wine drunk home alone late at night … like … two times a week.

goes between being high strung and uncaring - she’s not especially moody ( rather, is just consistently angry for whatever reasons ) but she definitely tries to bottle everything up.

probably keeps pepper spray on her at all times, even though she’s got her cane. has cat ear brass knuckles on her keychain - took advantage of the archery club at her private school. she’s not paranoid, she just likes being prepared.

has a soft spot for children, animals, and soft women. kind of person who will put herself in the line of danger in order to protect others - even if she doesn’t necessarily know them too well.

Right Kiddies, the De Rolo interaction continued

Here is the thing real quick about the people in the party going forward

Val was kidnapped at 7 and has a scar in her hand where the kidnapper stabbed it when she got annoying. She and her 3 Aasimar Brothers were also targeted when she was 12 by three necromancers. She made a pact with the Raven Queen in that moment to stall them long enough for help to arrive. Now Val is on a mission to serve her patron, become a hero, and return to teach her brothers to do the same. Except she is 16 and is in way over her head and has a lot of growing left to do.

Calladyne is a half elf bard who looks fab and sings like Beyoncé, but spent her life in a bad Fey court and has just returned from the Feywild and it’s only been, like, 3 months since she was technically born. Gal is 20

Dixie is a revenant out to kill the dragon that killed her home and family.

Aavar was tricked into wearing cursed armor that had a good ac, but the dude who gave it to her could make her do whatever he wanted her to do (and he was a dick) and she couldn’t take it off. He died and we recently got her armor off , which was a big in game victory.

Veir really likes guns. He thinks Dwarves should use guns as their main form of weaponry. He is butt-hurt that Percy doesn’t agree.

The player who controls Dixie had to leave early, so we were without a tank who...actually can’t really die. It was bad.

We find out that multiple people took the baby. We track some footprints back into Whitestone and to a warehouse. I break our stealth with a nat 1 and try to remedy it by going in first. 4 Rogues with sneak attack = pincushion Val.

We fight them off and eventually tie up two and interrogate the gal behind the whole thing, who happens to be the lady we met at dinner on the council who is in charge of the business and economy in Whitestone. She is Myriad. They handed the baby off to cultists.

We head back out again after some...intense interrogations. Percy pulls our Gunslinger aside to interrogate the woman and he nearly pulls an No Mercy Percy, smoke and all. It’s just a test tho to see if Veir was a good person or something and Veir is left along to interrogate this gal. Something awoke inside that dude because hell man, we was not very kind to that woman.

Percy gives Veir Animus as a loaner so he can better kill the f-ers that took the youngest De Rolo.

We head out, find an old hideout at the end of the tracks we are following in the woods, and make it through the hallway of spinning blades and smashing pillars set up as a death trap. Fun thing about that was if we got to the end, a rune on the door caused a fear effect and you ran back into the death trap.

We find the cultist and her crew with the baby. It’s a tough battle. Calladyne our Bard goes down a lot, and Aavar our arcane archer ends up getting hit by a spell that makes her see her worst fear. It wasn’t pleasant. Eventually the cultist lady takes a knife to the baby’s throat and Val is freaking out. She doesn’t know how healthy this woman is or if she will kill the baby as soon as anyone attacks. She risks it and gets the HDYWTDT with eldritch blast.

I catch the baby, Veir finishes off the remaining foe, and we questions her and her companions using my Tome ability my class provides (I can ask the dead 1 question). They were gonna use the baby for fuel apparently. We find that they are cultists if the Chained Oblivion, and a letter on the lady says

“We found another in Whitestone. Have it delivered to the Whithered.” Signed Thola.

Both names are from Val’s backstory. Both were two of the three necromancers that attempted to kidnap her.

So I’m cradling baby Vax, who has snuggled into my shoulder, staring in shock at this letter.

We end by returning baby Vax to a very grateful mother and father.

NEXT SESSION!

We all meet the next morning to De Breif the De Rolos (that is legit the session title. My DM was pretty proud)

Val basically info dumps her backstory to convey how dangerous the people are who took baby Vax. She gets really upset during this too and Vex reaches out to put her hand in mine and Val lets her know that she will do everything in her power to protect Vax from the necromancers. She accepts Val’s vow but says that they’ve got it handled for now and gives me the classic Vex smirk.

Also, turns out Baby Vax just has black wings that appeared recently, so Val is now for sure certain the RQ blessed them with the child instead of any other God.

So the De Rolos decide to help and Percy gets really excited. Like super excited.

Also Aavar snoops around for info in the evil council members house after being told not to and took a bunch of papers. Don’t know if she kept them or left them for the De Rolos but she and the councilwoman had relations through the Myriad, as Aavar was forced to work with them.

The next morning we are awoken by Percy, who is practically vibrating with excitement. He has a speedy way for getting us to Lyrengorn.

He made himself an airship.

Dude let us take it out on its maiden voyage.

The ship is pretty small, but the cabin is bigger in the inside and is heated. Dude just...got everything he wanted.

So we sail off to Bigby’s tower! With the eldest De Rolo kid Shaun as our captain.

Speed round

We discover that Dixie is basically Deadpool after she fails with a Nat one to climb down a rope in Lyrengorn. She has, in canon, a Canadian accent, duel wields swords, and reassembles herself like something out of a horror movie, with shit just snapping into place.

We find the tower and it’s like...super Trippy. Each door leads to another room, every step takes you to a different place with different gravity, one door took us to a giant mimic in a giant glass container that imitated sand. That was fun.

Also the steam Gollum we faced did 65 max damage in a round to level 6 players. That was stressful.

We finally find the study and the artifact we came to recover called Cepheus, the shroud of tears.

Funny thing is though, our dm made these items before we even sent our characters in and I just so happened to be a Raven Queen fangirl. He tells us that the list of coincidences and parallel story beats we somehow miraculously stumbled upon in our party is absolutely mind boggling.

Here is the item made the THE RAVEN QUEEN HERSELF BEFORE SHE ASCENDED.

Val takes the item in her hand and immediately feels a rush of power. She channels the energy apprehensively into her focus and suddenty sees the Raven Queen’s face. “Put it on.”

Val: “Yep ok im putting it on”

Val’s wings extend 15 ft in either direction, a cape made of shadow extends out from the clasp, and her hair goes all Eris from Sinbad.

So I got wings all the time now y’all (but just for the aesthetics, I still can’t fly unless I use my racial feat or turn into a raven)

We read Bigby’s journal and other artifacts we are looking for get mentioned. One of them is a bow (great for Aavar) that was lost in Pandamonium. Aavar makes a comment “I’m not gonna go carrying around a magical weapon that I’m going to get hunted for.”

I surprised myself with a very out of line quip from Val “I mean, you wore that armor and everything was fine” (implying that no one hunted her for that particular powerful magical item)

Everyone reacts shocked and very disturbed by the comment. Aavar walks away, stunned at the comment.

Never had Val been so powerful yet felt so powerless.

I love this game. I can’t wait for more drama. We all have plans for how to deal with that bombshell and are practically vibrating like Percy. We ended after exiting the tower. Things are gonna be real interesting as we travel to Vassilhiem. I’m so excited you guys.

Ironman Cozumel - a day of “nearlies”

It is always good to wait for a few days after an Ironman to write up a race report. I never quite trust my sanity until I have processed the race day caffeine, eaten solid food, had a good sleep and dealt with my post race laundry.

I had originally signed up for Ironman Cozumel as redemption for my frustrating 1st Ironman in Arizona last year. But it just felt too far away and I decided to squeeze in 2 more Ironman and 3 more 70.3 races as well. Yeah, nuts. So I arrived in Cozumel feeling a little wary. I was carrying great fitness but I was feeling mentally DONE with all the intensity. The pain of that Kona course was still fresh enough in my mind to make me even wonder if I really wanted to do it again. I wondered how much I could make myself hurt for a Kona slot or a PR or a podium.

I fell in with a fun bunch of Colorado based athletes at my hotel and was really thankful for their company, it was great to share the race weekend with them. I will be keen to catch up when our family relocates to Denver in January.

Did you read my Kona race report? Remember that nasty Aunt Flo who decided to turn up the day before the race? Well can you believe she did it again? Seriously, this needs some investigating, this has happened (unscheduled) the day before 3 races this year. It is not a disaster but it does add a little more anxiety and more time consuming pit stops. Anyway, moving on.

The course layout at Cozumel makes for a busy race morning. Swim start, T1 and T2 are all in different locations. I got myself to the swim start with enough time to squeeze my way up to the fast kids corral, take a few deep breaths, throw down the 1st of 11 Gu packets and go!

I loved that swim. I got onto the pier and dived, yay, I can't remember the last time I was allowed to dive into a swim start. I took off hard. I was wary of being complacent in the current assisted conditions. I settled in, I did get tangled up with other swimmers a couple of times but for the most part just put my head down and worked hard. I was a little bummed that the course was short. I measured it to be 3463m, 350m short! That combined with the current and my more than usual aggressive intensity gave me a ridiculous 13 min PR at 53:21.

I tore through T1 with no complications, glad I chose to clip my shoes on my bike so I could put some speed into my run.

I was out on the bike course in under and hour and I was excited! I thought, right, let's not waste that massive swim PR, let's turn this into a race PR. The swim had not left me feeling as fatigued as usual and I was right on top of my target watts right from the start. (I had struggled with this in my last 2 IMs.) I had ridden 1 loop of the 3 loop course on a rental scooter before the race so knew what to expect. The smooth, flat, straight roads were a TT queen’s dream! (Yeah, I am calling myself a TT queen.) The wind was not as dramatic as I was expecting and even when it was, I just reminded myself that everyone was feeling the same and I just stayed tucked in aero and held my watts. I must say, it was all going quite well, I was right on target for a 5:15 bike, I had made the left hand turn and was about 15km from the bike finish and was crunching numbers in my head and thinking come on girl, you could totally go sub 10 hours when I heard that dreaded “pop - phshhhhh!” Oh dang, back wheel puncture, I shifted into my small ring, jumped off and started getting the puncture sorted. I had pulled out my old tube and was reaching for my new tube when the Ironman bike mechanic arrived, we worked together to get the job done quicker. When we discovered the 3-4mm tear in the tyre we both groaned. Oh crikey, I did not have anything to seal the hole! The mechanic grabbed my old tube, hacked a piece off and shoved it between the new tube and the tear and began inflating the tyre. I wonder if I would have thought of that? Even if I did, I would have struggled to cut a piece with no scissors. He pumped it up to 80psi and I could see the old tube starting to show through the tear and I nearly died, eek! “Stop!” I panicked, but he said, “no, a little more.” He got to 90psi and seemed satisfied. We got my wheel back on and I grabbed his hand and with a squeeze, gushed my most heart felt “Gracias!”

I took off, feeling relieved and terrified. My race was not over and even with a 5 min stop, I was still on target for a very reasonable bike split. However, with just 2 thin pieces of latex between the road and my inner tube, I was terrified that I would not make it to the finish without another puncture.

Well, it worked, I made it to the bike catcher and passed my bike (and a shit ton of anxiety,) right over to him at a time of 5:18:47, with my watts and IF right on point.

T2 was uncomplicated and I was on my way. I had set myself up for a sub 10hr if I could pull off a good run. Even at that stage I still was not sure what my body was going to let me do. I have struggled with dodgy guts in a couple of Ironman runs and I was not sure if this was going to hit me again, I was feeling as good as I have ever felt as I took off so I just focused on keeping tidy, holding good form and pace.

The 3 loop, out and back course was pretty flat, had some shade and a noticeable tail wind coming back into town each time. So, 7km out and 7km back 3 times. Easy peasy. (Haha, the silly things I say to myself in races.) Sebastian Keinle passed me on his last loop as I was hitting the 4km point, he looked like he was doing it easy and so was I at that point, he must have passed me thinking “Whoa, that age grouper is looking so tidy, I hope I can run like that when I am her her age!” So you can imagine he was super keen to pose for a selfie when he saw me at the award ceremony!

There were only a few other girls out on the course at that point and I began to wonder who they were and what my position was. I had stalked my age group competition prior to the race and will be honest, I was not expecting anyone to be ahead of me given the race I had had so far. So when a spectator friend told me,I was in 3rd place as I hit the 2nd loop I was really bummed. I wondered who they could be, every one I saw on the out and back looked either younger or pro and no one seemed to be looking particularly uncomfortable. I worked really hard to push those thoughts out and told myself that I was having a killer race. I reminded myself that I could only control my own performance and that I was doing a good job of it right now. That being said, I began to slow down a little, I was getting tired. I stopped for the loo just before the 21k turn around. I made that turn and could see the 10hr race slipping away, it was a tough loop that one. I was looking at every girl on the other side of the road and thinking that they looked amazing and that I did not look like I was holding it together etc, my mind was being really mean to me. My new Colorado friends cheered me on as I made the turn for the last loop. I remembered all the races where I have picked up places in the closing stages. I kept that front and centre and just kept trying to look the part. As I made my last turn at the 35km point I started to see girls who I had thought were ahead of me still on the out leg and I realised that I had been really hard on myself. I did not over take anyone in in my AG but I was on target for a respectable run and a big IM PR so I pushed on refusing to slow down and made that final turn onto the carpet. I lept over the finish line with a not terrible 3:46:25 marathon and an awesome 10:04:32 a 10 min PR.

I found the gal who came 2nd in the post race area, I recognised her from the course, I thought she was a pro! Neither her nor the smoking fast gal who won were on the pre race athlete list I had stalked, I guess they signed up late - serves me right! Anyway we exchanged a few words about the race before she apologised, turned away and puked. Oh and here those doubts flood back to me even now, why wasn't I puking? Did I not try hard enough? I was gaining on her and as it turns out I ran a faster run split than her. I also beat her on the swim too. She went under 10 hours and I did not. Yes I have lamented that flat big time and more and more so since she was able to claim the 2nd of the 2 Kona slots up for grabs. Ok, enough of that, it is what it is. I did the best I could all dang day, I know I did.

I am planning my 2018 race season, still hoping for the perfect race and I hope I can snag another Kona slot in the process.

I look forward to working with my most excellent coach Rick Schopp at INTENT, training at a mile high and starting a new chapter in Colorado with my family in 2018.

He stopped outside the diner, casting his gaze over it. It hadn’t changed a bit in the years he’d been gone. Perhaps the biggest difference was the lack of congregating local teens. It had been a real hotspot back in his high school days. Now it seemed to harbor a middle-aged crowd. Then again, maybe the clientele hadn’t changed, just aged.

He finished reminiscing and pushed through the diner’s doors, a chime from the little overhanging bell announcing his arrival. He waved at the waitress behind the counter. Even she hadn’t changed, aside from getting older.

“Well, if it isn’t Chance Cooper!” She looked him over appreciatively. “Thought you moved out to the city and made it big. What happened?!” She gasped spying his sling.

“Nah, Miss Betsy. Just moved out for police academy. Just a cop who got himself shot.” He shook his head. “I’m surprised you remember me.”

“Hard to forget a handsome one like you, hun.” She fluttered her thick artificial lashes at him. “You were always so polite, too. You still with that pretty little gal? What was her name?”

“Dana and yes, ma’am.” He chuckled. “Ten years and two sons strong.” He held up and wiggled his ring finger.

“Good! You best treat her right, ya hear! She’s a good one. And bring those little ones around some time!”

“Yes, ma’am.” He agreed with an easy smile.

“All right. You go sit down. I’ll be with ya in just a minute, hun.”

He nodded and made his way further into the diner, spotting the friend he was supposed to be meeting. The big man stood up upon noticing him and grabbed him in a bear hug. “Chance, my man!”

“Butch, my shoulder.” He groaned as the big guy squeezed.

“Aw, yeah. Sorry about that, man.” Butch set him down and clapped his shoulder . . his bad shoulder. “Sorry.” Butch apologized again when he grunted with a wince. Butch wasn’t known for his delicate touch.

“Don’t worry about it.” He grunted out, adjusting his sling as he slipped into the booth.

“So, how ya feelin’?” Butch opened the conversation.

“Better. The time off’s been nice.” He downplayed his condition. It was only a shoulder wound, hardly anything life threatening. His partner had suffered much worse.

“Heard about yer partner.” Butch commented sympathetically.

“Yeah. At least, he’s alive. Won’t be rejoining the force though.” He returned soberly.

“That why ya decided to move back to town? I heard the city’s tough but didn’t take ya for one to be scared away.” Butch wondered, no accusation in his voice.

“Yes and no. Some idiot from the station called Dana and told her I’d been shot without waiting for further information. She thought she was coming in to claim a corpse. She was really shaken up.” He explained. “She’s always been concerned about me not coming home one day, you know, but this just really hit it home for her. She wouldn’t ask me to quit. She knows how much I love this job. But I could see how much it was stressing her, so I opted for a transfer. Things are quieter here, less risk.”

“I get it, man.” Butch nodded somberly. “Can’t be leavin’ her and those boys on their own.”

“No. I can’t.” He paused. “I’ve actually been thinking about retiring from the force completely.” He admitted quietly.

“What? Ya mean, like, for good?” Butch asked surprised, just as Miss Betsy came around. They paused their conversation long enough to give their orders and she wandered back to the kitchen after a grateful ‘thank you’ from Chance.

“Yeah.” He sighed and leaned back against the booth. “We’ve been talking about trying for baby number three.” He shook his head. “I want to be here for it, ya know. For all of them.”

“Yeah, I get it.” Butch nodded. “But ya love this job, man! What else ya gonna do? I mean, I can’t see ya stuck behind some desk. Ya crave ta be out and about. Out there. Doing real good. Ya always were a goody-goody.”

He huffed and shook his head at the friendly teasing. Sometimes he wondered how he and Butch had even managed to be friends. They had little in common in high school besides both being on the football team. Butch had been a regular bully, even to him. But he could hold his own and, after a showdown behind the school, they never fought again, even became friends despite their differences. They were still good friends after twelve years.

His eyes wandered as he reminisced and he caught site of another patron sitting in a seat against the back wall only a couple booths away. He noticed the man because the guy was staring right at him. He didn’t look away or try to pretend he hadn’t been rudely watching when Chance met eyes with him. He just kept staring, his chin in his hand, studying him unabashedly. He studied the man back. He looked younger and on the smallish side but didn’t appear to have any weapons. Other than exhibiting a shameless lack of manners, he didn’t seem to be a threat.

“I don’t know. You’re right.” He admitted, turning back to his conversation while keeping an occasional eye on the nosy stranger. “I’m still considering possibilities, but I can’t say I ever really saw myself doing anything else.” He sighed. “I want to figure it out before my paid leave is used up, though.”

“Well, good luck to ya, man. If there’s anything I can do ta help, you just let me know. I could put in a good word for ya somewhere if ya like.”

“Thanks, Butch.” He replied. “I’ll let you know.”

“No problem, man.”

They lapsed into a comfortable silence as Miss Betsy delivered their meals and they began eating, only occasionally interrupted by sparse inquiries into each other’s current lives.

“So, you with someone?” He asked, sending a quick glance back to the stranger who was still watching them.

“Ya say it like I can’t keep a steady girl.” Butch retorted.

He looked back to his friend and smirked, raising an expectant eyebrow.

“Yeah, all right.” Butch grumbled. “Her name’s Vanessa. I think she might be the one this time.”

“You say that about all of them.” He teased back.

“Yeah, but I mean it this time!”

“You mean it every time.” He chuckled.

“Shut up.” Butch snapped half-heartedly.

“Well, I hope you’re right this time.” He returned seriously. “It’s about time you settled down.”

“Yeah, well, we can’t all marry our high-school sweethearts.” Butch grumbled.

“True enough.” He smiled. He counted himself truly blessed. He glanced back up at the stranger. The man had finally taken a break from his blatant observations to study his phone instead. “Hey.” He whispered quietly, continuing once he knew he had his friend’s attention. “There’s a man sitting along the back wall there.” He gestured with a twitch of his head. “You know him?”

Butch raised a brow and turned in his seat to get a good look at the man. Chance would be more concerned by the obvious display of examination if the other man had bothered to show any shame in the behavior.

“Nah.” Butch turned back around. “Why? He botherin’ ya?”

“No, not really. He’s just been staring a lot.”

Butch twisted around to get one last look. “Don’t know who he is. Does seem familiar somehow, though. Makes me want to shove his head in a toilet.”

“Really? I thought you’d outgrown that nonsense.” Chance sighed.

“Didn’t say I was gonna do it. Some guys just inspire the urge, ya know.”

“No, not really.” He chuckled.

“Want me ta get rid of ‘im?” Butch offered.

“No. He’s not doing any harm.”

“Yet.” Butch grumped.

Their conversation moved on and the man seemed to return to minding his own business. They finished their meals and he struggled to pull out his wallet with his good arm.

“Don’t worry about it. I got it.” Butch offered. “Consider it a welcome home gift.”

“Thanks, man.”

They stopped at the cash register and paid after Miss Betsy rang them up. He thanked her for the meal and she waved them a friendly goodbye. They left the diner together, stopping outside to wrap up their conversations before going their separate ways.

“Tell Dana I said ‘hi’ and give me a call when ya get all settled. I haven’t seen those boys in forever.” Butch demanded.

“Sure.” He chuckled. “You’ll have to bring this Vanessa around so we can meet her.”

“Yeah, no problem. I think she and Dana would get along great.” Butch agreed.

The door dinged behind them and just as he turned to head to his car a smaller form collided with him. He grunted and winced when he strained his shoulder attempting to steady the other person. Before he even got a good look at the man, Butch grabbed him by his jacket and yanked him away.

“What are ya doin’, ya little punk?!” He yelled, nearly lifting the short man by the scruff of his coat.

“S-sorry. I wasn’t paying attention.” The man stuttered.

After getting a good look, Chance recognized him. It was the man who had been staring in the diner. He was holding a large phone in one hand with some kind of game app open.

“Let him go, Butch.” The guy was just another one of those phone zombies, too lost in his phone to pay attention to where he was going.

“Ya sure?” Butch growled. “I could lock him up in the station for the night.” He offered.

“He hasn’t broken any laws.” He shook his head. “Let him go.”

Butch growled at the young man and pushed him away. “Keep yer nose out of that phone and pay attention ta where yer goin’, ya little punk. I best not catch ya driving with that thing!” He yelled after him as the guy made his escape.

“Really, Butch. He didn’t do anything wrong.”

“Yet.”

Chance shook his head. “All right. I better get home. I’ll see ya later, man.”

“Sure thing.” Butch returned before ambling over to his car, climbing in and taking off faster than he probably should have.

Chance shook his head as the car quickly disappeared. Butch had followed him to police academy and actually made something decent of himself, returning to their hometown to join the police force, but he was still the same old Butch. At least, he had chosen to redirect his bullying tendencies towards law breakers . . and the occasional public annoyances.

He ambled over to his car and reached into his pocket to find his keys. He pulled them out with a confused scowl when he found a napkin caught up in them. He untangled the napkin wondering if he had stuffed it into his pocket without remembering doing so. As he did, he caught sight of letters written on it and unfolded it to read it. ‘Looking for work?’ He stared at the simple question followed by a time and address. It was highly suspicious. It didn’t even leave any indication of what kind of work was being offered. No number or name, just a place and time. He studied the address. It looked legit at least, a place downtown if he remembered correctly. But how did the napkin even end up in his pocket?

The man! The strange, nosy phone-zombie guy that had obviously been eavesdropping on his conversation and had plowed into him shortly after they’d left the diner. Maybe it hadn’t been an accident at all. But why go through all the trouble? And why him? If this were a scam or trap, he was hardly a low risk target, even with only one good arm. He stuffed the napkin back into his pocket and climbed into his truck as he continued to ponder the suspicious message. Legit or not, he wouldn’t be doing anything with it tonight. He needed to get home and help his wife get things unpacked before they put the kids to bed.

I received a traffic ticket for following too closely and was clocked at 17mph going through town. The car in front of me had pulled away from the stoplight and was clearly not interested in speeding up, so I had to speed up some to signal into the adjoining lane to pass him. This was during rush hour, so traffic was pretty heavy. The cop pulled me over and cited me for following too closely which carries a $115 fine. Cheapest Car to Insure on 18 Year Old Male ?

Hi everyone, I'm Victor, 18 Year Old Male which has Just passed his driving test. Now, here comes the hard part. The F*cking Insurance! What car is cheap to insure, I don't mind going as a 2nd driver even third becuase I'm unemplyed at the momment but once back in a job I will be the 1st Driver to gain my NCB. So I will most likely be a 2nd driver (I know its ilegal) BUT here's the thing I'm only using the car to get to college and back, it's not a full time driving expirience so in a sense, yes I won't be breaking the law!. My dad will most likely be using the car to get around with shopping etc during nights, weekends. I just genuinly need the car to get from A to B (Work and College). I have 900 to spend on any car, I've been quoted on my fathers Vectra (O8) 1000, which is really good but what riddles with me is that I know that car has a high fuel compsumption. HELP ME!! My policy on Geico expired recently. Right now I'm trying to think of all the money I'll be saving without using Geico. Their rates were outrageous. Those cavemen are smart not to use Geico.
