I am aromantic and as such should not be trusted on matters of romance
HOWEVER
I do know there is NOTHING more romantic than when you’re playing the piano and, without you noticing, they start playing in harmony beside you.

i saw that dragon age veilguard hasn't sold well (in the official statement, they specifically said that 1.5 million copies had 'reached players' so it must have sold even worse than that which. yikes) and while i'm quite gutted about that, ea and bioware also only have themselves to blame for it.
they let ten entire years pass between inquisition - a game that, for the most part, dragon age fans generally really like, at least for the lore - and veilguard. in those years, we saw them make andromeda, anthem, and heard reports of them trying to make the-then new dragon age game live service. thankfully we didn't get a live service dragon age game in the end, but a lot of the original writers were dropped, and i think that shows with the quality of the writing in veilguard.
i've never played dragon age for the gameplay, in any of the games. i despise the gameplay in origins - it's clunky and horrible and the deep roads makes me want to let the darkspawn win. but i love the story, which is why i endure the deep roads and the fade. the same in da2, which is probably my favourite of the entire series, even with the repeating dungeons (actually i love the repeating dungeons. i like knowing where things are), and the same in inquisition with the companions who feel like real people (cassandra pentaghast my beloved).
veilguard... the cuts show in the writing quality. the best character was emmrich (and assan and manfred) and from what i've heard he also had the best romance. which is another thing that suffered greatly - the romances (other than emmrich's). in a game series known for its romances, to the point where bioware was marketing the game as the most romantic as the series, how have they managed to mess it up that badly? cullen and solas' romances were late game additions in inquisition, and they're some of the best in the entire series, so it can't be an issue of time constraints.
rook's dialogue choices were essentially just different flavours of pleasant. do you want to be cheerful, lesser purple-hawke, or stoic? there's no real choice to be had throughout most of the game. even the choice between minrathous and treviso has little impact beyond what merchants might be available and a couple of later game choices. compared to earlier games, where you could let an entire village be overrun by corpses, or let fenris be taken back by danarius, the lack of choice is rather stark in comparison. the only real choices come at the very end of the game.
AND speaking of choices - the entire series has been about how all our previous choices have always mattered, about how we can always carry them over and use them to influence the world. so it was very much a slap in the face when not only could we not use the dragon age keep or import any choice beyond who we romanced in inquisition and what we wanted to do with solas, but the fact that by the end of veilguard, everything we did from origins to inquisition was all for nothing. bioware's choice to do that to varric was a kick in the teeth to long-term fans. oh, we got a little reference to the hero of ferelden in weisshaupt, how nice. pity they didn't tell us whether they're still alive or not. a shame we don't know hawke's fate.
so no, i'm not surprised that the game did so poorly in sales. i'm disappointed, but i'm not surprised because as i said, it's their own fault. i said back in november that they might not have another chance to make things right, and i hate that i might've been right about that.
this turned into an unintentional rant about all my grievances with the game.

Hey!! I really REALLY love your girl dad Daryl series and I thought maybe I could request something :) Imagine Daryl building a doll house or something (maybe a cute little mini motorcycle) for his daughter I can totally see him doing something like that it’s all I can think about when I see this picture. He would totally get the materials from one of his supply runs because I headcanon that everytime he brings something for his daughter (like a doll or something)
Tumblr media
His Motorcycle Princess | Daryl Dixon x Fem!Reader
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Summary: When his daughter was born, Daryl swore to himself that he'd do everything in his power to ensure that she remained happy at all costs. So when she asked for her very own motorcycle, who was he to deny her that?
Genre: Fluff.
Era: Alexandria, post Saviour arc (the bridge exploding doesn't happen, so Daryl never goes looking for Rick and he's happily living in Alexandria).
Warnings: Swearing, slight suggestive talk.
Word count: 1.3k.
A/n: Okay but why can't Daryl be the father of my future kids? He'd be the best dad ever. All jokes aside, I hope you like this!
➳༻❀✿❀༺➳
“Daryl, may I ask what the fuck that is?” you asked in surprise at at the sight before you, folding your arms over your chest.
Daryl looked up from his workbench, his ocean coloured eyes meeting your eyes before glancing back down at the big pink object in front of him. “S'a toy bike,” he stated plainly, patting the toy for added effect.
“Okay,” you drawled, nodding your head slowly. “But... Why?”
“S'fer Hazel,” he explained, picking up a screwdriver and resuming his task of assembling the toy motorcycle. “She asked fer a bike like mine, but obviously I ain't 'bout to assemble a real one fer a five year old, so I got this instead.”
You walked down the steps into the garage and walked over to your husband, standing slightly behind him as you watched him tighten the screws of the toy. “Where'd you even get this?”
“I was lucky 'nough to find a toy store tha' was left relatively untouched. Found this hidin' behind one of the shelves,” he explained, glancing over to you and nervously gulping at the close proximity. It amazed him that even after so many years together, you still managed to make butterflies erupt in his stomach.
“Aah, okay,” you nodded, placing a gentle hand on his shoulder. “Hazel is gonna freak out over this. This is gonna be her new favourite thing in the world.”
“Ya really think so?” Daryl asked, looking at you hopefully.
You smiled softly at him. There was lot of things people could say about the archer. People who didn't know him personally would call him rude, obnoxious and cold. Those who knew better would call him loyal, determined and caring. When it came to you, there was a lot you could say about your beautiful husband. He was kind, caring, loving, considerate, observant, and so much more. And you could also proudly say that Daryl was an amazing dad. Nobody was perfect and the archer had his moments that he wasn't proud of, but all in all, there was no denying that Daryl would do anything for your daughter.
“I know she'll love it,” you reassured him, wrapping your arms around him from behind and resting your chin on his shoulder. “You could bring her a painted rock and she'd love it. As long as it's from you, she doesn't care.”
“Nah, she hated tha' bunny I brought back fer her,” he replied, closing his eyes at the warm, soft feeling of you pressed against his back.
“It's only because it was covered in walker blood,” you explained. “After I washed it, she wouldn't let the thing go.”
Daryl couldn't deny that. The aforementioned toy had been a proud edition to Hazel's stuffed animal collection for two years at that point. She loved that bunny more than anything, favouring it to join her when she played tea parties with you and Daryl. It made the archer's heart swell with love, just knowing that his daughter appreciated what he did for her made everything worth it. All the battles he fought, all the blood that was shed, it was all worth it in the end. His wife and his daughter were safe, and he'd never been happier in his life than he was in those moments in the small home you shared in Alexandria.
With you still firmly pressed against his back, he got back to work. The toy was almost done; he only had a few finishing touches he had to do. Admittedly, it was a little harder to do so with you pressed against him from behind, but he refused to ask you to move. He'd much rather work on the toy for a few extra minutes than lose the comfort your mere touch brought him.
You watched his hands intently, your mind unwillingly wandering to a place that wasn't needed at that moment. However, you couldn't help it, the knowledge of what those hardworking hands could do in other activities taking over your senses.
“You know, this gives me deja vu,” you started, breaking the comfortable silence.
“Yeah? How so?” Daryl asked, tightening the last screw into the toy.
“Remember back when you were building your own bike five years ago?” you asked, continuing when he nodded. “Seeing you hard at work, doing something you were skilled at really did something to me. It was because you were building your bike that we even have a kid at all now. And now you're building a motorcycle for our kid.”
Daryl chuckled at the memory. “Never knew grease could turn ya on like tha' until then.”
“When it's on my handsome husband's hands? You best believe it does.”
Daryl turned around and wrapped his arms around you, staring down at you lovingly. “And now we have our own kid.”
“Our own little family,” you agreed, smiling up at him. “I love you, Dar.”
“Love ya too, peach.”
“Mama! Daddy!”
Before Daryl could lean down and capture your lips in his for a kiss, your daughter bounded down the steps. The two of you sent each other an amused look, reluctantly pulling apart. Hazel came over to Daryl and held her hands up in a silent plea to be picked up, and the archer complied.
“Hey there, Hazelnut,” Daryl greeted her with a fond smile, placing a light kiss to the top of her head.
“Hi, Daddy,” she giggled, sending a wave at you. “Hi, Mama!”
“Hi, Baby,” you chuckled, walking over to rub her hair affectionately. “Did you have a good nap?”
“Yeah! I'm ready to play now!” she exclaimed happily, a toothy smile on display.
“Well, how 'bout ya and I race our bikes?” Daryl questioned, capturing Hazel's attention.
“But Daddy, only you have a bike.”
“Not anymore,” you said in a playful tone, sharing an excited glance with the archer. “Daddy got you something.”
Daryl turned around with her in his arms and showed her the bright pink toy motorcycle. Hazel let out a surprised gasp before laughing in excitement, throwing her arms around Daryl's neck and hugging him as tightly as she could.
“Thank you, Daddy! Thank you! Thank you!” she exclaimed in excitement.
Daryl chuckled fondly and pressed a soft kiss to her temple. “Yer welcome, Hazelnut.”
“Now I can be like you!” she giggled, wiggling slightly to be put down. When she was, she ran over to the workbench and stared in awe at the toy.
“Yeah,” you agreed, walking over to her to ensure she didn't accidentally hurt herself with the tools that were still on the workbench. “You just need your own crossbow now.”
Hazel gasped in delight and turned to Daryl. “Daddy, can I get a crossbow?”
“'Course ya can. How else would ya help me on my hunts?”
“Yay!” Hazel happily clapped her hands. “Mama, I'm getting a crossbow!”
Daryl smiled and walked over to the two of you, wrapping an arm around your shoulder and playfully ruffling Hazel's hair. He chuckled at the giggle she let out, feeling content and comfortable as he listened to Hazel's babbling as she regarded over all the places she would go with her very own motorcycle, even to the moon. There was nothing better in his life than moments like these. This was what he fought for. And he would do it all over again if it meant keeping the two most important people in his life safe.
Because without you, his beautiful wife, and Hazel, your perfect daughter, his life would never be the same.

Christmas was approaching.
The second Christmas you and your family would be spending in Jackson.
And with it a long to do list to make the holiday as perfect as it was possible in these times. The plan today was to prepare everything for the cookie bake session the next day at the community hall. Your alarm bleeped early and you reached over it blindly with a long groan that turned into a cough that shook your whole body.
Groaning you turned to lay on your back, your eyes blinking open.
Trying to take a deep breath through your nose gave you another cough attack, your throat hurting, your nose stuck.
„Fuck,“ you sighed, eyes closing.
„Mommy?“ There was a knock on the door. It was Ana.
„Mhhhhh?“ You sighed and the door opened. Your heard her footsteps coming to the side of your bed, your eyes opening. Smiling softly at her wearing the Christmas jumper Tommy had gotten for her and her brother only the week before. Patrol having found five boxes in the corner of an old store a couple weeks ago.
Her lips turned down as she looked at you.
„Are you okay Mom?“ She asked, frowning.
„I think I’m a little bit sick,“ you coughed, voice hoarse.
„Oh nooo,“ she said, about to crawl into bed with you when you heard the door downstairs open and Joel calling a loud Good Morning into the house.
„Daddy’s here,“ she cried out happily before she turned around, about to run out of your room, stopping at the door, looking at you.
„Get better soon,“ she smiled before she turned around and ran down the hallway, leaving you chuckling to yourself.
You must have fallen asleep again at some point, the sun already high up in the sky when your eyes blinked open the next time. You tried to take a deep breath which only ended in another coughing fit.
You looked around the room, surprised when you found a full bottle of water on your bedside table. Next to it was one of those herbal scent candles lighted you knew one of the nurses from the clinic made in her free time and you think you could scent the eucalyptus. But maybe that was just wishful thinking.
„You’re awake,“ you were startled, your head turning towards the voice, finding Joel leaning in the doorway.
„Barely,“ you croaked and he hummed.
„I got the kids to school and I shovelled the snow in front of the house. I also started some chicken soup downstairs and Tommy will get some honey so I can make you your favourite tea,“ he said and a small smile sneaked to your face.
„You remember my favourite tea?“ You asked and he looked almost insulted.
„With the amount of times you asked me to keep an eye out for honey and lemon? You bet I do,“ he winked.
You still did not know how to react to him causally mentioning things like these.
The last almost two years had been a constant back and forth on your journey to learning to trust Joel again. And he was working hard to get you to trust him again.
You had talked. A lot.
Which was so unlike the Joel you had married in Boston. He answered every question you had and apologised over and over again until you told him to stop.
Deep down you had forgiven him a long time ago, and you told him so. Because it was hard to hold a grudge over someone who had such a big part in your life.
But that did not mean things could just go back to the way they were before.
Something he agreed on. He did not want to get back to how things were. Because the way he treated you was not how a husband should treat his wife. And if you’d give him a chance to show him how he wanted to treat you if you’d let him, he’d love to have one.
That was how family dinner started.
Once per week in your house.
Once in his house.
And occasionally at Tommy and Maria’s.
In the beginning your brother joined the dinners too, still not trusting Joel completely, at least not with you and his family.
Outside of that they became quite the patrol team, becoming partners. Calvin trusted Joel to have his back and vice versa. But it took longer to gain that trust when it came to you and the kids.
You actually had one of your biggest fights with your brother when you wanted to tell Ana and Leo that Joel was their father.
It was almost a year ago.
You could see the longing in Joel’s eyes every time he was looking at the two children.
And even though it scared the shit out of you to tell them the truth and let Joel into your life like that, you knew your kids life would be better with Joel as their father.
Because above all, Joel was a Dad.
He had spoken a lot to you about Sarah and how losing her made him lose the part of himself that kept him going. That kept him human.
He told you that he felt a little like that again when he met you, when you were together. But so many things had happened that made him fear for what would happen if you were taken from him too, that he always kept you at arms length. Even though all he wanted was to just love on you.
That part of him had died, or so he thought.
Loosing you for real had made him spiral so badly, he had woken up in the FEDRA hospital with no recollection of how he got there.
Apparently while drinking himself into a coma his heart had given out and he had a heart attack.
If it wasn’t for Tess coming to pick him up for a drop he would have died.
And it was only after then that he realised how much he was the problem in the situation he was in.
Which apparently did not mean he wanted to change.
No, things got even worse before they got better, but Joel did not want to go into detail about that.
It was only after he was tasked with taking Ellie to the fireflies, you knew she was immune by now, that he felt like he was starting to heal. It was her that did it, and he told you that he was sorry he could not do it for you. That you had to live with a shell of a man.
More than once he asked you how you could ever have fallen in love with him in the first place to which you only said
„The moment I first saw you I knew that you would be it for me. It was you or no one, Joel.“
And so, a week before Joel’s birthday you had sat him down and told him that you wanted to tell Ana and Leo that he was their father.
A news that was taken with big eyes and excited shouts of „I always wanted a Daddy!“ by both of your kids when you finally told them.
Yet when a month after Ana and Leo asked you if they could have a sleepover at their Daddy’s place you found yourself agreeing only reluctantly. Frankly, you did not know what to do with yourself when your kids weren’t around. Because ever since you had given birth to them, you were never apart for more than a couple of hours.
This would be two days.
You think it was the panic of being completely alone in your house that made you agree to meet up for dinner with Nick, Jackson’s dentist.
He was in his late forties and had been in Jackson for the last five years.
And it was only after almost an hour into the dinner that you realised that he thought this was a date. A date you had said yes to.
Internally panicking you had excused yourself with a very much not existent headache, making your way to Maria and Tommy’s where you and Maria had a glass of Jackson’s first red wine and a much needed talk which made you come to the realisation that the thought of dating, let alone being together with anyone other than Joel was so foreign to you that for some reason you let Maria talk you into an actual date with Nick.
It seemed logical to you after two glasses of wine.
Something you regretted by the time the date ended and you had allowed Nick to kiss you.
You felt absolutely nothing.
Thankfully he felt the same way.
What you did not know was that Joel had seen the two of you kiss. He had been on his way to the Bison to pick up leftover cake for the kids, Ellie was at home with Ana and Leo.
It was only when Tommy walked by, watching Joel stare at the spot you and Nick had long been gone from that Joel snapped out of his trance, the cake long forgotten as he walked back to his house.
He had asked you about it the next morning, wanting to know if he still had a chance to make things right with you.
And seeing him like that, almost desperate at the thought of having lost you for good, stirred something in you.
So in a move neither you or him had seen coming, you had kissed him.
It was just a quick peck, so quick you did not even realise it happened until after when you saw Joel’s surprised expression. He just looked down at you, his lips parted in surprise. You were torn if you wanted to run out for the door or if you wanted more. So you didn’t fight him when he pulled you closer, his arm hesitantly coming to wrap around your body, his face lowering to catch your lips in a kiss that would be consuming your every waking thought in the near future.
He kissed you like you were his oxygen, and it stirred something inside of you, you thought you had forgotten.
Joel moaned when you let your fingers scratch through his hair, his whole body seemingly jumping in surprise.
Parting from your lips, he rested his forehead against yours.
A tear slipped down his cheek as he smiled at you.
„I gotta pick up the kids from school,“ he whispered and you took a deep breath.
„I know,“ you whispered back.
He pecked your lips again, before he very reluctantly let go of you.
„See you at my place for family dinner later?“ He asked, to which you only nodded. He smiled, making you laugh when he walked straight into the wall behind him, cursing under his breath.
That day was three months ago.
And while you haven’t kissed since then, you and Joel got closer. As close as possible without actually being together.
Because there was a tiny part of your brain who was still wondering if the old Joel is lurking somewhere. If he would end up hurting you again once something happened that he could not deal with. If he would lash out like a wounded animal just to push you away again.
Though deep down the last almost two years had shown you that he had changed. He was…. Content. Happy even at times. Mostly when he was with you and the kids.
Ana and Leo asking if their Daddy could live with you was not helping either.
Because you craved it.
You craved having some… domestic normalcy in this crazy world. You wanted to come home to Joel. To have dinner with him and the kids every single day. You wanted to fall asleep in his arms. You wanted to wake up with him.
You just wanted to be with him.
The tiny part in your brain just needed to shut up and let you do your thing.
When you woke up the next time to a coughing fit, the sun was setting outside. Taking a deep breath, or as deep as you could manage, you sat yourself up with a groan. You went in the bathroom to do your business before you grabbed your fluffy bathrobe, Joels birthday gift to you, and slowly made your way downstairs.
You could hear Leo asking something when you made it down the stairs. Following his voice you walked towards the kitchen, a smile sneaking to your lips at the picture that you walked into.
Joel was sitting at the kitchen table together with Leo, Ana on his lap. He had his tongue poking out of his mouth in concentration, as he helped Ana use one of the cookie cutters to make the perfect cookie, a big sheet of dough on the table.
Looking through the kitchen you could see that he must have prepared the whole dough that you had intended to make for the baking session tomorrow. There was a big pot on the stove which probably would be the chicken soup he mentioned earlier. And to top it all off it looked like he had fixed the blinds of the kitchen window.
„Mommy is awake,“ you heard Joel say and you looked back at your little family, sitting at the table.
Leo and Ana were grinning at you, just like Joel, all three showing the dimple in their cheeks.
„Are you feeling better mommy?“ Ana asked and you nodded.
„A little. I might feel even better after I eat something,“ you said and she nodded.
„You should have some of the soup Dad made. It’s super yummy,“ Leo perked up and you smiled.
„I think I will,“ you said, walking over. You were about to grab a bowl to put some soup in when you heard Joel get up.
„Sit. I’ll bring you some,“ he whispered as he walked by, his hand coming to rest on your hip as he did. You nodded, too tired to fight him before you walked and sat down at the table.
„Daddy made so much dough, we can make our own cookies,“ Ana said, carefully picking up the cookie she had just cut out, setting it down on the baking sheet.
„I didn’t even know Daddy could make dough. Or…. Cook anything really,“ you said.
„I have some hidden talents you do not know about,“ Joel winked as he sat a bowl of soup down you wish you could smell. It looked delicious and you gave him a small smile.
„You gotta tell me about those hidden talents some time,“ you said and he nodded with a mischievous grin.
„Will do. Now eat. You gotta get better,“ he said before he sat back down to make some more cookies.
This is what you wanted.
You wanted to have everyone you loved under one roof. You wanted Joel to never leave.
Tumblr media
You were back in bed after dinner, reading your book when you heard a soft knock on your opened bedroom door. Looking up you found Joel there, looking at you.
„Kids are in bed. I’m gonna get them tomorrow morning too, so try to sleep the cold off and get better quickly. Wouldn’t want you to miss Christmas over this,“ he said.
You nodded softly.
„Okay. Then…. Good night,“ he said, about to leave.
„Joel?“ You asked and he stopped and looked at you.
„Yeah?“
„Would you… Would you mind staying?“ You asked quietly.
Concern washed over his face immediately, walking towards you.
„Are you feeling worse?“ He asked. He knelt down beside the bed with a groan, his hand coming to rest on your forehead. You shook your head, your hand taking his and pulling it down to rest against your cheek.
„I want…. I want you to stay. Here. With me. With us. I want us to be a real family. I want to fall asleep next to you every night. I… want you to be my husband. For real this time. Because I finally feel like I know you. All of you. And I… I love you,“ you said.
Joel just looked at you.
And when he didn’t say anything you were afraid you had waited for too long to completely forgive him. Your face fell and you were about to pull away when he kissed you, surprising you.
„I love you,“ he mumbled against your lips and you sighed relieved.
„I love you so much,“ he said and you carefully pushed him away.
„You gonna get sick,“ you warned and he huffed a teary laugh.
„I don’t care. Through sickness and in health, remember baby?“ He asked.
„We actually never said those vows,“ you reminded him and he hummed.
„That’s why I’m gonna ask you to marry me. For real this time. But not now,“ he said and your eyes widened, your head shaking.
„We are already married Joel. You don’t have to ask me.“
„Oh but I do. Because if we do this, I want to do this right. Fresh start. I wanna speak my vows in front of everyone who wants to listen because I will spend the rest of my life loving you the way I should have from the start,“ he said and you felt yourself tear up.
„But not now. Now I want you to get better so I can take you out to show you the surprise I’ve been working on,“ he said and you smiled.
„Surprise?“ You asked, he nodded.
„I have been working on a surprise for you and the kids, and it’s finally ready,“ he brushed his hand over your cheek.
„Now I wanna knowwww,“ you pouted and he smiled.
„You will,“ he promised.
„Joel?“
„Yeah?“
„Will you hold me?“ You whispered and his expression softened before he nodded.
Minutes later you were laying in bed, Joel behind you, his arms around you.
„Thank you for giving me another chance at loving you,“ he whispered against your ear.
„Don’t waste it,“ you hummed, already half asleep.
„I won’t,“ he promised before you both fell asleep.

Modern Love
dbf!Joel Miller x f!Reader
• A/N: you asked and i shall provide. presenting my new magnum opus, dbf!Joel x reader slow burn realness - i want this shit to last, so it will be a series (apologies if you were hoping for a one-off, i can't bring myself to do it). also probs good to mention that this is a shameless self-insert fic bc us british girlies need some JM love okay? title and chapters inspired by 80s songs bc i'm insatiable.
• Warnings: no outbreak au, language, alcohol consumption, pet names, reader is afab, british and has hair - no other physical descriptions (and the british thing is only mentioned in passing dw).
• Word Count: approx 2.5k
1: Let’s Hear It for the Boy
You pottered around the kitchen, the countertops left messy in your wake; you weren’t a baker by any stretch of the imagination, but you’d tasked yourself off with making a birthday cake. If it came out edible, you’d gladly consider it a successful endeavor.
It wasn’t your birthday, nor your father’s - ever since your parents’ divorce and your father’s subsequent mid-life crisis move to the States, you’d lived with your dad in Austin, Texas. Both of you had been there for the best part of six years. You’d visit your mother back in the UK periodically, usually over the summer, and return just in time for the neighbourhood’s favourite celebration: Joel Miller’s birthday BBQ.
Joel and your father had become fast friends; meeting at a trader’s warehouse by chance, and bonding over their appreciation for a cold one in front of the TV. Both men were reserved by nature and were single fathers to their kids - that being yourself and Sarah, Joel’s daughter.
You ducked your head, peeking into the oven to check on the progress of your passion project. Nothing looked burnt as far as you could see and, much to your surprise, a pleasant smell was emanating from the cake tins and wafting around the kitchen.
When your father had asked why you were so insistent on making a cake for his best friend, you fell short of an answer. The reality was that, since you’d known him, Joel had been at the centre of near enough every fantasy you’d had. He was hot, funny, and surprisingly kind given his reputation for being a bit of a grouch.
You’d almost developed a sort of secondary friendship with Joel, branching off from that of him and your father. He’d ask for you to ‘babysit’ Sarah for him, even though she was sixteen and arguably more capable at taking care of herself than you were. A fledgling friendship grew between her and yourself each time you visited; letting her talk about the drama at her highschool.
Another ten minutes passed before you finally conceded and opened the oven door, a waft of steam hitting your face as you did so. From what you could see and smell, the labour of love had been successful. You pulled the tins from the rack, and set them on the side to cool. You’d deal with them later - now, it was time for you to get yourself sorted.
You hopped into the shower, rinsing batter from the ends of your hair, scrubbing at every inch of your body. Despite the painfully obvious fact that Joel Miller was not the kind of man to date someone half his age, you preened and polished yourself until you were silky smooth and quite literally glowing - you opted to live in hope, after all.
After your shower you traipsed into your room, slumping onto your bed, still wrapped in a towel. You scrolled through your phone aimlessly, reading through messages that you'd been sent whilst you'd been distracted by your newfound baking talent.
tell the DILF I say happy birthday ;)
The message from your best friend back in the UK elicited a small laugh. There was something pleasantly nostalgic about tittering over someone entirely unattainable; it reminded you of being back at school, taking it in turns to gush over whatever boyband member took your fancy at the time.
Enjoy the party today, don't make a tit of yourself xx
Your mother knew you all too well. In all fairness, she had dealt with the consequences of your drunken teenage years most of the time, so it made sense. You scrolled through a few more generic messages; the work group-chat, a discount code from some mailing list, and...
Excited to see you kid :)
Oh. Oh. A smile tugged at the corners of your lips. Joel was excited to see you. He probably sent the same message to several other people, but you relished in the attention nonetheless. If anything, it spurred you on to finally get dressed and get back to the cake downstairs.
You slipped on a summer dress; it was light and airy, perfect for the brutally hot weather. It was ankle length, a soft pink and white paisley-style print over the soft cotton, and a split to the thigh over the right leg. It hugged where it needed to, and honestly? You looked fucking fantastic.
Trotting down the stairs and back into the kitchen, you groaned under your breath. The mess that you'd made whilst baking was worse when you saw it with fresh eyes. The cakes were cooled now on the wire rack that you had left them on; your dad would just have to dodge the splodges of batter and eggshell scattered across the countertops.
After a futile attempt at decorating, you gazed down at the cake. How you'd managed to cock up the icing this much was beyond you, but it would have to do. Your dad was waiting impatiently by the front door, grumbling under his breath, a six pack of beers and a card tucked under his arm. You grabbed the cake, wrapped it in tinfoil, and headed out, balancing it on a platter as you and your father made the short walk to the Miller household.
It was only a few minutes before you'd arrived, stepping up onto the porch behind your father, allowing him to knock whilst your hands were full. A moment passed, and then the door opened. A wide grin and sparkling brown eyes revealed themselves; a charcoal grey t-shirt clung to tan arms. It took all of your self-restraint to not gawp every time you saw Joel - he just got better and better.
Joel clapped a hand on your father's shoulder, mumbling something and essentially shoving him through the threshold of the door. Then his eyes turned to yours, glancing quickly down at the tinfoil wrapped cake in your hands, before speaking with a chuckle.
"Run outta wrapping paper, huh kid?"
You felt your cheeks warm. "Bold of you to assume this is for you, huh Joel?", you quipped teasingly. Much to your delight, your retort elicited another gravelly chuckle from the man. He leant against the doorframe, and you raised an eyebrow, trying not to stare at his bicep. "Well, are you gonna invite me in?", you questioned with a smirk. Joel stood upright, shrugging playfully as he did so.
"'Spose I'd better. Go on, get your ass inside kid."
The giggle that escaped your mouth was entirely involuntary as you ducked under Joel's arm and into the house. A fair few people were milling around indoors, but a majority of the guests were situated in the backyard. You made your way through the back door after perching the cake on the kitchen table.
A few people turned and gave polite waves when you stepped outside, others started their beeline toward you to exchange mundane pleasantries - ‘you’re looking very well!’, and ‘how’s that job of yours?’, and the dreaded ‘have you found a nice boy yet?’. You rinsed and repeated your answers for each person, smiling politely.
Sarah was sat on the grass with a friend; your father was swigging from a bottle of beer and laughing animatedly amongst a group of middle-aged men. Your heart nearly leapt of your chest when someone tapped you on the shoulder, causing you to spin around quickly, eyes wide. Tommy Miller, Joel’s younger brother, stood with a smug grin plastered over his face.
“Well ain’t this a surprise? Don’t think I’ve ever seen you without a drink in your hand at these get-togethers.”
You scoffed, feigning offence at the all too real accusation. “Big talk for a man that isn’t offering to get me a drink”, you retorted, smirking. Tommy threw his hands up, palms toward you in mock defense, laughing.
“Whoa now! I’m a fine southern gentleman, ‘course I’ll get you a drink. All you had to do was ask, doll.”
The conversations you had with Tommy consisted of little more than playful flirting; sometimes you wondered if he was actually flirting with you, but seeing how he acted around women he was actively trying to pick up resolved any doubts. Any fire and sass was quelled, and he would become almost meek and reserved - the embodiment of flushed cheeks and a coy smile. It was nice being able to know where you stood with him, especially since you didn’t have a fucking clue when it came to Joel.
~~~~
As the hours passed and alcohol swilled around the mouths of every adult in sight, the polite affair that was once a celebratory BBQ had devolved into a raucous cacophony of laughter as a very drunk Joel lured everyone inside the house, stumbling as he went. You were drunk, but not to the same degree; with everyone settled inside, you decided it was the ideal moment to bring out the cake.
You peeled the tinfoil from the confection, grimacing slightly as you looked at it once more - even with beer goggles, it still looked akin to a toddler’s cooking class attempt rather than a 50 year old man’s birthday cake. You stuck a single candle in the centre and used the lighter you had stolen from Tommy earlier that afternoon to light it, before lifting it carefully and carrying it toward the lounge.
As you entered you nodded once at your dad, who was just sober enough to understand your signal, and started to lead the group into a pitchy chorus of ‘Happy Birthday’. You grinned as you walked over to where Joel was sat, setting the cake down on the coffee table in front of him before backing up, snapping a photo of the birthday boy as he held a hand to his chest, a soft smile on his face. He looked at you as he leant down to blow out his candle, mouthing ‘thank you’ before blowing out the flame.
“Y’all sure know how to make a man feel like one lucky son of a bitch. Thanks for comin’ everyone.”
Joel chuckled, smiling widely as he spoke. You glanced at the faces around you; the single women of the neighbourhood doting on his every word, a couple of the married ones too. Your dad held up his beer, calling for a cheers. Picking up your own bottle, you held it up in Joel’s direction, beaming at him as others held up their own drinks.
People began to engage in their own conversations again, shifting and mingling amongst themselves as more drinks were poured. Joel sidled up beside you, standing over you as you cut slices of cake.
“You make this yourself, sweetheart? Just for me?”
Heart thumping in your chest, cheeks burning, you nodded with a shy smile. Before you could raise the knife again, a thick finger swept up some of the icing on the cake’s border. You turned around and watched as Joel put the same finger in his mouth, shooting you a wink as he pulled the digit out with a satisfying pop. He leant in close, so close you could smell the alcohol on his breath melding with his cologne.
“Mm. Tastes as good as you look in that pretty lil’ dress.”
Like a fish out of water, your mouth dropped open ever so slightly and you inhaled sharply. Before you could even comprehend what had just happened, Joel had turned away, shouting out to someone setting up karaoke by the television. Did that really just happen? You must have been hearing things, surely? You considered pouring the rest of your drink away, but fuck it; if you were hearing things like that, it would be worth the hangover.
Karaoke was a shambles, as expected. This wasn't the first birthday BBQ that Joel had relished in the karaoke machine being dragged out - despite his usually very collected exterior, he loved to sing, especially once he had a few drinks in him. It was never the song choice you'd expect someone like him to go for either - the man had a soft spot for 80s music and always requested a power ballad.
Perched on the arm of the sofa, you had a front row seat to Joel's latest performance; in fact, you were one of the few people actually paying any attention. It felt like he was singing to you, the way he crooned the words to 'Don't Dream It's Over', his eyes glancing over your form every once in a while. God, he was gorgeous.
The song concluded and you couldn't resist snapping another photo of the man as he took a swig from his bottle in front of you. It was one of the few occasions that you could get away with it, under the guise of taking them for memory's sake. Joel caught you, and smirked as he lowered his bottle.
Your dress had slipped from one of your shoulders a tad, and before you could lift it once more, Joel had stepped forward. He took the soft cotton between his fingers, letting the tips of them graze your shoulder ever so gently as he slowly shifted it back into place. Your eyes were wide, gazing up at him, your tongue swiping over your bottom lip just so. Joel hummed, low and rumbling, barely audible.
"Sweet girl... better keep that tongue in your mouth 'fore I forget who I am."
Swallowing hard, mouth running dry... did he actually just say that? Did he mean to say it in such a sultry tone? "I-I, uh...", your response was unintelligible at best as you stumbled over the flurry of thoughts in your head. The lounge had since cleared out; Joel chuckled softly under his breath. With a tender touch, he raised a hand to your cheek; a calloused thumb brushing over your cheekbone.
Your lips parted slightly as your breath caught in your throat. Every beat of your heart reverberated in your head. Joel leaned down, still smirking, as he pressed his lips against yours. A breathy gasp left your lips as his moved firmly against yours for just a few moments. He pulled away sooner than you had wanted, leaving you sat there with your chest rising and falling heavily.
Joel's jaw clenched and he scrunched his eyes shut as he stood in front of you, dragging a hand down his face with a sigh. He mumbled something under his breath that sounded like an apology, shaking his head ever so slightly, before he turned to leave. You watched as he left the room, stomach turning all the while. Nausea rose up inside you, and as you made a sprint for the bathroom, you couldn't shake the feeling that it was your fault he had responded in such a way. Shit.
02 | Now playing: What Are You Doing Now
Tumblr media
you'd think rindou skips class and causes a bunch of ruckus often enough for the teachers to stop giving a shit about him (and his brother), and that may be true, but it's not the case for every teacher.
he actually has a few favourite teachers that he respects. there's nakajima sensei who teaches english—she's all smiles everyday, and she's one of those teachers who considers every student her own child. including rindou, who helped carry her stuff to the classroom a couple times while she was pregnant. she's also just really good at her job, rindou always ends up putting the earphones away to listen to her. and then there's kawamura sensei, the p.e. teacher that he likes for no reason other than "he's cool and admirable."
fun fact, rindou caught kawamura sensei alone with hamada sensei in a classroom after school when most of the students have left. he made eye contact with him before leaving immediately. the next day during p.e., kawamura sensei came up to rindou–
"i won't tell anyone," rindou casually said before his teacher could say anything first and watched as he became visibly flustered.
"i- i was just going to tell you that was a good goal," kawamura sensei chuckled sheepishly, then glanced around before leaning in to whisper back to him. "you're a real one, kid."
funnily enough, hamada sensei is one of the teachers that just... enjoys scolding him. it's not like she needed to search high and low for a reason to, but she would still do it over small reasons. the whole class thinks she just wants to humiliate him and it actually garners some sympathy from them.
rindou doesn't normally care either, it's easy to tune out teachers scolding him, but not hamada sensei. especially not ever since she started confiscating his earphones in her classes, forcing him to listen to every word she says. so yes, rindou doesn't like her at all and has no idea what kawamura sensei sees in her.
now imagine the state of him when he finds out that there's homework from her due today and he had no idea about it. stressed is kind of an understatement.
the day before, your homeroom teacher assigned you all to different seats and rindou sits behind you now. he lit up immediately upon seeing you doing the homework, the exact same homework you had turned in two days early. the same homework he didn't know about.
"y/n," he calls out to you from behind and it certainly grabs your attention in an instant. a voice you've heard before, but never heard saying your name. rindou glitches for a second when you wordlessly turn your head to look at him. "can you help me-"
"no."
he raises an eyebrow, he hasn't even said the whole thing? "wha-"
"no, i won't do your homework," you interrupt him again, turning back around.
"wait—please, i really don't wanna get in trouble with hamada sensei." rindou gets up from his seat, standing beside you and your ears perk up just a little bit. the younger haitani brother, delinquent of the school is pleading you to do his homework? you honestly thought he'd be more annoying about it.
"i don't do other people's homework," you retort and you see him crossing his arms in your peripheral vision.
"then what's that?" he nods to the worksheet on your table.
"my homework."
"you turned this in two days early," he says, making you finally meet his eyes again. "besides, i don't think you ever do your homework last minute."
you chuckle, "you'd be surprised." at that, rindou furrows his eyebrows in confusion. there's a bit of silence for a while as you get back to work and rindou glances around. just when he's about to say something, you beat him to it. "i'm only doing this for shimoda because he's paying me."
"so money is what you want? fine, i'll-"
"no, i don't want your money."
you don't think his face could look any more confused, but it does. "then what's gonna get you to do my homework?" he asks, and you finally put your pencil down.
"teach me how to play basketball after classes and we have a deal."
Hello! Time for another blog post! I think my last one was two months ago and a lot has happened since 😊
We have been attending a ton of historical recreation events so I still have many photos to share, hope you don't hate those! It's been really fun! We are exhausted and all out of social battery however so we are taking it easy this month. Another thing that's been happening a lot is that even when we are not dressed in historical clothing we keep getting stopped by strangers on the street because of our everyday outfits, it's been like that for a couple of years now so we are no longer startled or nervous about it but it's happening more and more often now and it's so nice! we always end up chatting about the events we go to and our jobs and hobbies and exchanging contacts or they ask for photos and stuff! people are really kind and excited about it and I still find it so surprising in the best way. We grew up in a very hostile city and environment and that makes you paranoid and cynical so these interactions and response has been healing really. I know their words will stick with us for years to come 😭 Sadly the unbearable heat is starting though so that means our outings for the next three months will be limited to the crack of dawn and after sunset 😞 but at least the summer brings a lot of fruit with it so we can sit at home and eat pineapples and strawberries while we wait for autumn.
My family came to visit a few months ago too and we made them watch most of Doctor Who's season one to four and some of our favourite episodes from all the other seasons lmao. And much to our delight they really enjoyed it!! They both loved Ten the most and my step dad is now in love with Martha 🥰
We have also been watching the current season and it's been so fun keeping up with fandom theories in real time and talking about it and speculating with friends in person, it's the first time we get a chance to do it since we got into the series and we are enjoying it a lot!
We also watched season one of Jessica Jones and we loved David's performance as Kilgrave!! He stole the show for real. Kilgrave is such an incredible villain, one of the best I've seen and DT does such an amazing job portraying every aspect of him. He's detestable and volatile and frighteningly powerful and has such an intimidating terrifying presence in the narrative while also being pathetic and vulnerable and ridiculous and childish and so human with all it's worrying implications. It was just so gripping and I wish he had stayed for the rest of the show honestly!! Now we have to pick our next David Tennant series to watch! 😊
Also!! Dragon Age is back!! AHHH I wanted to thank everyone that commented on my last DA pieces, it has made my month to read the comments, I didn't expect so many people to remember my art or my character after so many years and it's so touching and flattering you have no idea 😭💘 I look forward to making more and sharing them with you all, I'm truly grateful for the kindness you've shown me both back then and now I hope you know.
I feel so spoiled lately with all these franchises that I love releasing new content!! I've never been in these many fandoms at once!! I have so many ideas to draw and keep jumping back and forth between drawings from different shows and games AAAAA it's a good and welcome change honestly, keeps me busy and inspired!
Anyway that's all for now I think! I hope you are doing well and this summer/winter is kind to you all ❤️
Okay. Okay. I once again disregarded people’s opinions on a Pratchett book as ‘too good to be true’ and then I ate my fucking words upon actually finishing said book. Monstrous Regiment. Fucking hell. I will most likely post more thoughts tomorow, but it was. So good. Like. Unbearably good. Even better after having read the entire watch series and knowing of the characters from The Truth. Anyways. I did not know Vimes was in this book as much as he was. That, as a Vimes enthusiast, was a lovely surprise.
Also, Sergant Jackrum is one of my new favourite characters. Holy fuck. He’s top tier. Right up there with Vimes, Vetinari, Sybil and Angua. Slightly above Carrot, even.
Polly is a girlboss and I think a kiss would last longer if it was shared with Maladict, perhaps. Lmao- Yea I am obsessed with this book. I love me a good war story, so this, plus a trans narative, plus sir Pratchett’s astoundingly real humor (and a lot of Vimes content) was a straight bullseye into my soft spot.
I have just finished it and I want to read it again. Unreal.
Mint Plays Games: What Pre-Generated Characters Can Do For You.
Tumblr media
From July to October of 2024, the Dice Exploder Discord Server ran the Pregens Game Jam, a game jam all about using characters that have been created for a specific table, or that have been created to streamline the process of learning a game.
Incidentally, at the same time, I was setting up the playtest server for Protect the Child, and, primarily inspired by Yazeba’s Bed & Breakfast, I decided to run my play-tests using a pre-gen format: I’d run a series of sessions using pre-generated characters, that could be picked up by various players depending on what games fit their schedules. I did this out of necessity - my hours are all over the place, and I can’t consistently run games at the same times on the same days.
Tumblr media
As we started play testing, I noted some interesting things happening among my players. The first thing I noticed was that the players latched onto the pre-generated characters fairly easily - and their attachment caught them off guard. More than one person told me that they were surprised that they could care so much about a character they didn’t write themselves.
Tumblr media
The second thing that I noticed is that players were really excited to take ownership over a character. Certain character story-lines or backgrounds resonated with them, and as a result some of my play-testers are making a real effort to come back so they can see the next chapter of their character’s story. It’s really gratifying, knowing that there’s something in these pre-gens that has them coming back for more - it feels kind of like having a favourite character in a tv show or book. Since I’m the one who wrote those pre-gens, I won’t deny it does a good thing for the ego!
For folks in the Dice Exploder server, this might not come as a surprise, as I’m sure experiences in games like Chuubo’s Marvelous Wish-Granting Engine and Eat the Reich have both been hot topics in the ttrpg podcast sphere recently. These kinds of games are likely one of the reasons why the pre-gen game jam was such a hot event.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
However, I think there’s some more potential that could be pulled out of this. I think embracing pre-gens can do a number of really interesting things for your ttrpg experience, both in one-shots, as well as in longer campaigns - and I’m going to digress about that, after I talk about four games that I used as experiments over the past month.
Tumblr media
Lady Blackbird
I ran Lady Blackbird for the Open Hearth this past month. It’s a game that is exquisitely designed, because it makes the on-ramp for new players so easy. The characters written for the game are well-defined, with explicit personalities and goals that are designed to mesh well together and give the group reasons to both work together and engage in character friction. It’s also got some really stellar advice on improv, which was invaluable to me back when I was a first-time GM.
So much of the game asks you to turn to the players to build on the world around them. How does Captain Vance feel when Natasha talks about her pirate lover? Is Snargle intimidated or enthralled by Naomi? What kind of jail is the group stuck in, and why does Kale know a way out? From the get-go, the players are encouraged to throw in bits and pieces of the world, and the GM can then pick up on those bits and pieces and turn them back on the players, making the world relevant to the pieces that the players are interested in.
The group who ran it was great: everyone was willing to add to the world, and riff off of what had already been built. The characters sought out connections with each-other, and I found it rather easy to work in the elements that folks had indicated they were interested in - primarily butch lesbians, magical mishaps, and rebel activity.
The players also have a lot of creative control over their characters. You don’t have to stick with any of your characters’ pre-written goals: Natasha can give up on the search for her lover, Naomi can forego her quest for vengeance, and Snargle can choose to stop their witty banter whenever they like. As a reward for a big change in personality, the player immediately gains access to a new goal that tells us what they prioritize, and still rewards them for leaning into it. Every time I run Lady Blackbird, the players’ interpretations of their characters is different, and that’s what makes the game so re-playable for me.
Tumblr media
Subway Runners
I also ran Subway Runners on the Open Hearth. Similar to Lady Blackbird, Subway Runners uses pre-generated characters, but these characters are randomly generated: their motivations, skills and equipment can be used to develop a personality, but those personalities aren’t customized with the narrative in mind. Of course, the narrative isn’t really planned ahead of time either - your characters will always go on missions in the subway tunnels and come across strange critters or magical problems, but the details of any given foray are also randomly generated.
This doesn’t really stop the players from making some really strong choices. One player noticed that both his character and another were looking to find the cure for immortality, so they turned it into a rivalry. Another player noticed that his character had been given a spider-silk suit, and made it a key part of their character’s presentation. The randomly generated mission told me that it would involve a bunch of raccoons in a Death cult, so I wove that together with the monster description to make the monster the raccoon’s interpretation of Death.
Overall, the pre-generated nature of Subway Runners is incredibly useful in making it a no-prep, easy-start game. I don’t think I’d recommend it as a first-time game in the same way I’d rec Lady Blackbird, primarily because I think the GM needs to have a strong understanding of Forged-in-the-Dark rules to keep the game running smoothly. However, I think Subway Runners definitely solves the time problem - you don’t spend precious game time creating a character, and a busy GM can still have an adventure put together in five minutes.
Tumblr media
Blades in the Dark
I wrote up some pre-gen characters in Blades for my home group, pre-selecting the Smugglers crew, and taking a one-page mission out of Hour of Chains, a series of unofficial Scores written by A Couple of Drakes. The players showed up, chose a character from a pile, and wrote in their name, background, look, and a few pips. Their core stats, connections, and abilities were all chosen for them, and I told them that while they had to start at Brisco’s Noodle Palace, they could decide why.
The players had a lot of fun coming up with shenanigans, but at the end of the session, one player told me that they would have appreciated a fully-created character, complete with backstory. Another player told me that they weren't sure whether or not they were “allowed” to do something with the lore, as Blades has some lore built into the setting, and it’s hard to parse what is immutable and what is up to interpretation. I personally love coming up with the canon on the spot, but for folks who are new to this style of play, it seems that having some of that lore pre-defined might give them some confidence when it comes to determining what their character “would do”.
Compared to Lady Blackbird, I think this observation makes sense. Since Blades uses playbooks, I think the choices when it comes to motivations are made when the player choose a playbook. I had the ability to select the playbooks that I thought made the most sense for the Score I chose, but there were still enough playbooks available that all of the players had multiple options to choose from. Out of all of the sessions I ran with this experiment, I think that Blades was the weakest, and I think the reason for that is because I left so many pieces of the set-up undefined.
Tumblr media
Apocalypse World
For Apocalypse World, I wrote up a very specific setting, and designed the characters using the Mad Max series and the Silo series as primary inspirations. The post-apocalyptic settlement was an underground bunker with levels sectioned off for various jobs. I chose a series of playbooks that resonated with the setting I had in mind, and pre-selected gear, followers, stats and abilities. I also wrote up three threats, with loose ties to at least two playbooks each, with the expectation that I could pick up whichever threat made sense for the playbooks my players decided to engage with.
In short, I did exactly the opposite of what the Bakers recommend in the game: I planned nearly the entire thing beforehand.
That being said, I think the session was a really strong one. The players were quite happy to pick up the characters and play into the conceits I’d designed into them, for the most part, although one person did a bit of toggling with their gear to more suit the character they wanted to play. It took a little bit for folks to warm up to the confrontation mechanics, but when they realized how much the game encouraged turning on each-other, we were off to the races.
We ended the game with scenes that pointed to a snapshot of a larger story, which felt fitting despite the fact that I typically see PbtA systems as games that really reward you if you stick with them for a multi-session campaign. However, I went into the session expecting to play a one-shot, and we got a really fruitful experience out of it.
The Takeaway.
While I can still see the merits of creating your own character, and I certainly won’t stop running games using that format, I think that I’ve developed a newfound appreciation for pre-generated characters, whether they are built into the game, or they’re made to make the game easier to learn.
Pre-gens also solve a lot of problems that can be common in new tables: your characters already have a reason for working together, you can learn how to play the game using a template that’s built to work well, you have more time actually spent playing together, and you can engage with a story that your character is designed to be relevant to.
Pre-gens also give the GM a chance to build their own desires and boundaries into the story from base one: in Lily’s Angels, a pre-gen setting for Protect the Child, I was able to bake in the themes about transphobia, religious violence and state violence into both the setting and the characters. The people who sat down at that table sat down because of those themes, not in spite of them. In all of my one-shot games, regardless of how much of the character was written beforehand, the nature of the game meant that the players still had agency over who their characters were and what they did. The background was a jumping off point - it gave everyone a base to work from, and as time went on, they found their own reasons for engaging with the story as it was presented.
Additionally, in all of the games where the characters had strong backstories and well-defined personalities written into them, the players found reasons to really care about what was put there on purpose. A player who picks up Cyrus Vance in Lady Blackbird might pick them up precisely because they’re in love with Natasha, and a player who picks up Sal in Yazeba’s B&B probably wants to engage with the artist’s struggle to find his signature style.
If you go the extra mile, I think you can use this set-up regardless of the game. In Apocalypse World, the work is a little more than normal, but I don’t think it’s terribly much. In Rotted Capes, World of Darkness, or Call of Cthulhu, I think that it’s a substantially bigger ask, but traditional games are also very likely to have pre-gens as part of the book, built for starting adventures - it’s just a question of whether that starting adventure is actually right for the kind of game you want out of that rule-set.
Tumblr media
When it comes to my own game, Protect the Child - I made the pre-generated settings primarily to make play-testing easier, but I think I’ve stumbled on a little goldmine by accident. Using setting packs for a new table takes away a significant amount of set-up for the GM, and gives new players concrete characters that communicate the goals of the game without having to struggle through a series of character choices first.
Oh, and I also wrote a setting for the Pre-Gens game jam: Protect the Child: Digital Glitch. It’s a game designed to talk about disability, corporate subscription models, and questions of ownership, and I think it’s pretty rad.
Hello! I got a whole shelf of old Star Trek novels from a yard sale and I'm deciding which to read first. Unfortunately none of them are D. Duane. Can you tell me what other Trek novels/authors you've enjoyed?
At the moment, I have far more trek books than I've actually read, partially because I have no self-control when it comes to acquiring them, partially because, when I started to mine them for blog content, reading them started to feel like homework (I thought I put marking pages with tabs behind me after grad school). This is also tough because Diane Duane's novels tend to be far and away my favourites (Spock's World, Doctor's Orders, and The Wounded Sky are all brilliant), but you already knew that! They're also a large chunk of what I've read. I've also read a bunch of Blish novelizations and some of the movie novelizations, which are fun but don't quite count in the same way, since they are retelling known stories.
However, there are a few I can recommend. I really enjoyed A Contest of Principles by Greg Cox, which feels like a real extended TOS episode; our main trio all have plenty to do, and the relationships are very fond and very true to the series. Shell Game by Melissa Crandall also has the character relationships I'm looking for. (Actually, both of these at one point pair Spock and Bones together while Kirk angsts from the sidelines while doing his own part of the mission, which is apparently a fruitful scenario).
J.M. Dillard also knows the characters really well. I enjoyed The Lost Years a lot, though it must be said that it is basically the crew breakup novel because it bridges from the show into TMP, so you'll just have to rewatch the movies after to remember that it all turns out all right in the end.
Jean Lorrah's The Vulcan Academy Murders is fun as long as you don't go in expecting a mystery you can't solve in 30 seconds and just want to appreciate the characters and learn more about Sarek and Amanda.
Brad Ferguson's Crisis on Centaurus is worth it for the backstory look into Jim and Bones' first meeting, as well as giving us some time with Joanna McCoy.
I can't actually fully recommend Carmen Carter's Dreams of the Raven, which has a very strange and queasily unethical romance subplot that doesn't land for several reasons and an unsatisfying ending, but it's an interesting look into McCoy with amnesia (and it did let me coin the term "Character Fondness Power Differential" while writing the review).
This ask did, however, remind me that I need to start making a dent in my book collection before buying more (I store them where I can't see them, so I'm constantly surprised by how many I actually have). I think I'm reading Howard Weinstein's The Covenant of the Crown next.
If you search my "trek books" tag, you'll see more!
yuuta okkotsu’s playlist🎧.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Yuuta Okkotsu, our favourite timid boy. he’s so sweet and respectful i love him.
he’s the type that when you’re laying down with him and mindlessly scrolling through tiktok to just stare at you in adoration and if you ask what he’s looking at he just smiles and says that he’s admiring your beauty.
he’s the type to help you pick an outfit for everything and actually give you good advice. he is a fashion icon, change my mind. you can’t.
he’s the type to hold the back of your shirt instead of your hand, it’s very endearing
he’s the type to give you his umbrella if it’s raining even if you’re walking to separate places. he’d rather you stay dry.. even if it means he gets sick in the process.
he’s the type to call you for literally anything, and text you constantly throughout the day and tell you how much he loves you.
he’s the type to rant about you to panda and inumaki— who are insanely invested in yours and yuuta’s relationship. panda is such a pro y/n x yuuta shipper.
he’s also the type to buy you anything he knows you’d like. even if his bank account was in shambles.
he’s the type to just sit with you and actually enjoy himself as you show him all the tiktok’s you’ve sent to your friends because you thought they were funny
he’s the type to surprise you with breakfast in bed..
he’s the type to gush over mitski, laufey and faye webster with you, as well as cry to their songs even if neither of you were sad.
he’s the type to read to you if you asked, or sing to you. my ex could NEVER.
he’s the type to wipe crumbs off your face while you’re eating and then lick his finger. the first time he does this you drop your chopsticks out of disbelief and he apologizes so much asking if it was weird. you’d have to reassure him that it was actually attractive.
he’s the type to get flustered after your guys’ friends make fun of how sappy he is with you.
he’s the type to use a classic record player and put in frank sinatra as he hangs out with you.
he’s the type to only have 30 instagram followers and like 10 people on snap. all of which he goes to school with.
he’s the type to post you instead of himself because he feels so lucky to be blessed with such a great girlfriend.
he’s the type to tuck you in at night, or change your clothes if you fell asleep in your street clothes. ONLY IF YOU WERE COMFORTABLE WITH IT THOUGH.
he’s the type to do anything you say because he wants you to know he’d do anything and everything for you.
he’s the type to get mad if someone was too rough with you in training and scold them.
he’s the type to only put you on his christmas list
he’s the type to love you UNCONDITIONALLY.
Season 2 Final Thoughts
I loved this season so much. It was a really good mix of drama and humour and it all worked so well together. Ocean’s 9-1-1 is my ultimate favourite episode of the series so far!
One point, we have now had Bobby, Hen and Chimney ‘Begins’ episodes. I really, really hope we get some more for Athena and Buck! And maybe Eddie too? I assume they won’t do Maddie as we know a lot of her story thanks to this season with Doug. This show is a great ensemble cast but seeing a deep dive into the characters backgrounds is so much fun.
Chimney – I loved his evolving relationship with Maddie. They’re so freakin’ cute together! I’ve been cheering them on all season! I’m gad he managed to find some self-esteem after all he went through last season with his injury and his ex-girlfriend. He felt much more authentic. His backstory sort of came out of nowhere considering how big it was to effectively lose his brother and it could’ve done with some more emotional build up to it but it was nice to have all the same.
Hen – I’m super glad her and Karen are past their rocky patches from last season with Eve. I loved seeing her past in the Hen Begins ep this season. All the actors can carry their own plotlines and episodes but there really is something so charismatic about Hen. I think what I love the most about her though is you can put her with any other character and she works with all of them so well.
Athena and Bobby – I have to take these two together. I wasn’t expecting them at the end of the first season and I was pleasantly surprised by how much I enjoyed them. Seeing “older” characters get second chances at love and family is always so inspiring and I’m definitely happy they went down this route with them. I’m ecstatic they went so far as to marry them too. They had some good individual and joint plots this season. They found a good balance with them.
Buck – I love Buck to pieces. He’s one of my favourite characters. He’s a real scene stealer. But he did feel like he was adrift this season, despite being given more connections in Maddie and Eddie. Which is not bad! I just get the feeling after his relationship with Abby, he’s looking for something more permanent now so I’m excited to see where that journey takes him. And hey, it took him two seasons but he has his own apartment! I love his friendship with Eddie, finally he has a partner he can pair off with on rescues and they’re both ridiculous dorks. Buck and Maddie were a brilliant combo too. Their sibling banter was wonderfully engaging and despite not seeing each other for years, they fit well together.
Eddie – He has the most adorable son in the world! His season felt the most complete plot arc wise which I assume was on purpose just in case things didn’t work out with his actor. I’ll admit during the first half of the season, I thought they might’ve been setting him up as Buck’s potential new love interest. The whatta man song, the elf at Christmas commenting on their family unit and Maddie calling out Buck’s boy crush felt like it might have been building to something. Because this is TV. They only have so many minutes an episode and every minute has to mean something. The second half of the season focused more on his relationship with Shannon and Buck ended up in liaisons with Taylor and Ali but I’m secretly wishing this gets picked up again in season 3.
Maddie – her domestic abuse plotline was gut wrenching but also very inspiring. I’m glad she found the strength to break out of that relationship. I hope next season they don’t just sweep the whole thing under the rug as last season’s plot because domestic violence can have long lasting consequences and it would be good to see some follow through with it. Surviving doesn’t just stop because the abuser is dead. Her budding relationship with Chim was absolutely adorable and I am so here for it! I am so glad they got Jennifer Love Hewitt for this role. She’s one of my favourite actors.
ARCHER'S WE ARE FANCON EXPERIENCE
i promised i would share my feelings, so here they are!
first of all, while i do still maintain that the venue was too small for how beloved the series is, even with the split into two days, and i have some gripes with merch sales, the organisation was otherwise good. it was always very clear where and when you needed to go and what you needed to do, which is always great for an anxious person like me. all the explanations were in three languages too (thai, english, and chinese), so navigating the space and the benefits was easy. the little setup of things to do before the concert starts was also great - there were merch booths for all of the boys who had merch to sell (which is everyone aside from aouboom), there were photobooths with different 'we are' themed templates, there was also, of course, gasha (or, as i like to call them, gambling machines) but hey! i got some merch off of that as well, so i'm honestly not even complaining.
now, onto the actual show! it was incredible, i can hardly imagine anything that would need to be added or changed. it honoured both the series and the artists on their own in many ways.
there were multiple performances with the entire cast, including a surprise appearance of jj, tee, and pepper (or, our mattmickbeer trio) during one song, who then also stuck around to talk about their characters and favourite scenes. friendship is a huge part of the series and they did not forget that. a lot of stage backgrounds and props were an homage to the series too (the one that felt particularly thought-out to me was the background for 'truth in the eyes', which was a lush garden - a callback to the mv's concept metaphor). the couples performed both their main songs and also one cover each, which were picked out by every cp for different reasons, but all of which were great. before every main song, there was a little video with the couple's moments that encapsulated their relationship, and they were really lovely and well-done (a great way of giving the artists a second to breathe too).
i think there was also pretty much everything each of the main eight could want to do on stage. pond and aou got to dance (together as well!), winny got to rap, phuwin and satang got to sing together. at least from what they said, they were given a lot of creative liberty in terms of choosing what they want to sing and do on stage as well, so that is also lovely. all of the performances were, of course, absolutely fantastic and even exceeded my expectations in some ways.
all the little chats between performances were also wonderful and everyone (or, almost everyone) got really emotional closer to the end. we had marc crying first, talking about how much this experience means to him and thanking poon for being his first real partner, and then the floodgates just opened. poon also teared up, winny started crying because marc started crying, then he cried some more when he actually started speaking himself, then satang started crying too, they talked about how much all of this means to them and how much they mean to each other, they held hands. then dear sweet boom almost sobbed on stage and aou cried too - they were also very thankful for everything and especially each other. pond tried very hard not to cry (and succeeded by breathing out every ten seconds and twirling around the stage), talking about how happy he is that everyone loved the series and them so much, saying that the cast became like a little family, and thanking phuwin for being a great partner, and phuwin also talked about how he was afraid of having high expectations and how grateful he is to the cast and the fans. this was definitely one of those moments, which made the whole experience so much more meaningful and emotional. i also wanted to hug all of them and tell them how amazing they are 😭
the appreciation for the audience was huge throughout. pond kept putting his hand at his forehead to try to see all the fans sitting farther away, at one point aou asked for the lights to be turned on, so they could see everyone, during the last performance (which was 'we are forever'), they all came down from the stage and walked around us, waving at everyone.
after the huge three hour concert, there were still the benefits to work through, which ended up going on for five hours (until almost 2 am). the boys were all really lovely and nice throughout and i'm genuinely impressed by their ability not to let the understandable tiredness that they were all feeling interfere with their interactions with fans and each other.
so, to conclude! this was an absolutely incredible experience and i am so happy i decided to come here for the fancon (and actually managed to get the ticket). there are multiple countries they are going to next, as you know, and there will likely be more added in the future. so if you live in any of those countries, i am definitely saying you should go. and if you don't but it is within your means to go and you just weren't sure whether the fancon is worth an entire trip abroad - i am confirming that it very much is. i am confident you would not regret going.
Every tattoo’s so intoxicating
Janis ‘Imi’ike x fem reader
Warnings: fluff, some coarse language, smutty ending
Little tattoo tour for Janis & her reaction to reader’s first tattoo
Read the main series here
Tumblr media
Janis got her first tattoo in college, after a long time of considering, she finally decided to get one on her chest. She’s really proud of that one, and felt way more intensely rooted to her culture with that. Your jaw fell to the floor when you saw the finished result. It was beautiful. Some time after that, she got your birthday tattooed along her left shoulder bone— right before the wedding. Both times, you went along with her for moral support. And as cool as you found tattoos to be, you were too scared of the pain to get even one.
One day, while Janis was out helping Carl and Grace at work, you were tidying up yours and Janis’ room. With Kalia down for a nap, you had some quiet time. You sat down on the edge of the bed, grabbing Janis’ notebook off the nightstand. There was a pencil tucked in between two pages. Curious, you opened the book up to that page. And there it was…an adorable little doodle of the frog Squishmallow she had won for you at the carnival years ago, just…staring at you. Then, you got an idea. You were going to get this tatted, you were finally going to get it done, check that item of your bucket list.
You set the book down and proceeded to finish sweeping the floor. “Mama, will you play with me?” Kalia appeared in the doorway. “I’m bored.” She chuckled.
“Hey, tell you what— how about you and I go for a little drive. Mama wants to get a surprise for mommy.” You picked up the notebook again, gesturing for her to come over. You picked Kalia up and slid her onto your lap, “I…am going to get a tattoo of this lil guy.”
Kalia gasped, “Oooooh.”
“Will you keep it a secret?” You laughed, kissing her cheek.
“Yeah, mama.” The kid agreed, “Mommy will love it.”
“She so will, right?” You hummed, “Alrighty, come on, let’s go get changed and get going.”
“Can we get shave ice please?” Kalia asked excitedly.
You gasped dramatically, “Are we discussing dessert already, my love?”
“Yes?” She giggled as she led you into her room, “I’m gonna wear my shirt with the froggie on it.”
“Nice one.” You smiled, retrieving that said shirt from her chest of drawers, “Okay, jean shorts or jeans?”
“The shorts.” Kalia decided.
“Here you go. Want me to help?”
“It’s okay. I can do it.” She beamed proudly.
“I’ll wait for you right outside, yeah? Want a snack before we hit the road?”
“Pretzels?” She suggested.
“Good choice.” You shut the door and went to the kitchen to grab the snacks for both of you, and a drink each. Couple minutes later, Kalia emerged from her room. “There you are!” You exclaimed cheerily, “Sit down here, baby. I’m gonna do your hair real quick while you snack?”
“Okay, mama.”
————
After making a copy of the doodle, you took the picture and put it in your purse, leaving the original safe and sound. You found a place that accepted walk-ins, and thankfully it didn’t take long to. You were quickly settled in and talked to the artist about what you wanted. As nervous as you were, the man was really understanding and kind. Having Kalia there with you for moral support was also helpful. The girl held onto your hand before the tattoo artist even started. But, it did calm your nerves very quickly. Well, that and you didn’t want to go batshit crazy in front of Kalia and scare her. Either way…you kept it together. Then…it was finally done. There was an adhesive plastic wrap to leave on for about five days, but now that the actual tattooing was done, it wasn’t as bad as you thought it’d be. You paid, tipped and left after expressing your thanks.
You and Kalia stopped somewhere for lunch before driving the rest of the way home. After helping her take a shower, you sat in the backyard while she decided to read. Sipping on your favourite tea, you glanced up at her occasionally to see how she was doing. Roughly a half hour later, she asked if you could colour with her. You agreed, of course. That was always fun. By then, Janis was almost home. And when she was, Kalia immediately giggled and ran up to her. “Mama has a surprise for you~” Janis took her hand, squinting confused, “What is it, baby?”
“Come with meeee.” Kalia pulled Janis into the backyard, stopping next to you. Janis spots the new tattoo on your forearm. “Oh, that is the cutest thing ever.” Janis gasped softly. “Is that my drawing?”
You looked at your wife with a grin, nodding your head. “Yep.”
“I love it.” Janis pecked you on the lips.
“Me too.” Kalia chimed in, you and Janis chuckled.
“Did you have fun today, my love?” Janis asked, sitting down on the chair next to yours. Kalia nodded, “Mhm. Lunch was really yummy too.”
“Ooh, I bet. Mama sent me some pictures.” Janis smooched her on the cheek. The three of you hung out in the backyard until the sunset, then made dinner together. Carl and Grace were a little surprised, but happy to come home to the laughter and aroma of food cooking on the stove. “We’re home~” Grace walked into the kitchen first, “Thanks for making dinner.”
“Of course.” You smiled, “Go wash up, it’ll be ready in a couple minutes.”
————
“How was it?” Janis asked, shutting the bedroom door behind herself. “The tattoo? It hurt, it did.” You admitted with a raised brow, “My tolerance for pain really plummeted after that incident when I had Kalia. But, I got through it. Wasn’t the worst.”
Janis smiled softly, cupping your cheek then stroking it with her thumb. “It looks beautiful, I’ll say. I actually really want to get another one done.”
“Not gonna stop you, because you know I love it.” You snickered cheekily.
“Oh, I do know.” She mirrored your grin, pressing a kiss to your lips. Janis laughed into the kiss right before she kissed you deeply. Which…ignited a little something in you. And god you wished you weren’t this tired. (Not that it really mattered, Janis loved doing all the work sometimes)
“Fuck.” You cursed, biting back a laugh. Janis kept kissing you, and eventually, you were laid on your back with Janis straddling you. “Yes?” She asked innocently.
“Please.” You uttered, for good measure.
The smile doesn’t leave her face as she slid downwards. You feel her breath fanning against you while she pushed your shirt out of the way. “I love you.” She murmured, peppering kisses all over your core which went lower and lower. You started to squirm, she went back up and attacked your neck instead. Janis of course knew exactly where to work over in order to make you tick, it didn’t take long at all for you to feel incredibly aroused. But your sleepiness was also apparent. At the same time, she’d palmed your breast. What finally made your head spin was the feeling of her lips wrapped around your nipple. You gulped, exhaling harshly. “Fuck.” You laughed breathily when you feel her tug on the sensitive flesh. Janis kept at it, going on and on minute after minute of giving your tits the attention. She knew you like the back of her own hand…this always riled you the hell up. Her eagerness time after time always drove you crazy, but it was more so the fact that she was always gentle with you until…well, you didn’t want gentle. Pretty soon, every inch of your exposed skin was marked by her kisses. Each touch of her lips against your skin sent a rush of heat that pooled between your thighs. Janis sat on your core, knees on either side of you hips as she cupped your face in her hands. “You wanna do it?” She asked, like always. Looking at your flushing cheeks and pouted lips, she couldn’t help but grin.
“Yeah.” You told her, voice barely above a whisper as your mouth went dry. You also nodded, so she definitely got it. Janis nodded as well humming in approval as she leaned down to meet your lips, making out with you. Each kiss got deeper and hungrier, with the heavy breathing and the slight struggle to breathe you writhed beneath her. You were getting just a tad impatient. Janis laughed, her breath fanning against your face as she tilted your chin and pulled away from the kiss. Cooing softly, her gaze then fell onto your bicep. Her thumb brushes over the plastic-protected area on your skin, “This is crazy.”
“Really?” You asked sweetly, “I would say crazy is you doing this while knowing exactly what I want.”
“I’m always a little crazy, what do you mean?” Janis smirked, fingers tracing your arm mindlessly. “Is it uncomfortable to lay it like that?”
You squinted at her, this sudden sweetness when she was being smug annoyed you. Obviously. You needed her. “I mean— yeah, but how else do I leave it? Fold my arm and rest it on my chest?”
She snorted, “No, I want to give your boobs some love.”
You laughed, “What? You’re—”
“Hey. You said so yourself. I’m a tit head.”
You rolled your eyes at her playfully. She leaned closer to your face again, palm slowly going from your chin and wrapping around your neck ever so gently. “Keep this up and we’re using the strap.” Her voice was husky and slightly intimidating. Another rush if heat pooled in between your thighs. You whined, “I don’t want the strap.”
“Oh, you don’t?” She teased. “So what do you want?”
“You. Fuck me.” You smiled back as sweetly as you could, she loved it. And she slid back down, settling herself in between your legs, sliding your shorts and underwear off as she moved. You lifted your hips and let her slide those articles of clothing off.
“Glady.” Janis looked at you in anticipation of your taste, “Open up, baby. You don’t need me to tell you what to do…”
Is it just me or does anyone else think Yuji Itadori would spoil the hell out of you on Valentine’s Day?? This takes place when reader and Yuji are of age and you guys both work full time jobs. Whoop.
He would start off by preparing you breakfast in bed. A plate full of waffles topped with scrambled eggs and bacon with a pool of syrup on the side for you to dip what you wanted. There was a cup of coffee and a cup of apple juice for you too choose from. (He would take what you didn’t choose)
You would talk all morning about everything and anything. From updates about your favourite shows to how the both of you are feeling in general(you loved being vulnerable with him and him with you).
Yuji would be cracking jokes about everything. He made it his mission to remind you about the time Kugisaki spilt coffee on Gojo’s shirt and how He, Kugisaki, and Megumi tried to get the stain out but failed.
You loved the way he smiled at you. You would tease him every time you caught him staring for too long. Saying the classic: “take a picture, it’ll last longer!”
He would turn red and give you a light smack.
“What? It’s not my fault you’re the most gorgeous person on earth!” He would say chuckling.
Once you finish breakfast and got dressed for the day(obviously you’d wear the matching red and white outfit Yuji had bought for you for this special day), Yuji led you into the living room for you to find heart shaped balloons which varied in color. Pink, red and white.
There were also multiple boxes of your favourite chocolates sitting on the coffee table, waiting to be eaten by the both of you.
He also had the tv turned on, the screen displayed the menu of your favourite movie waiting to be played.
“We can rewatch this full series and then once that’s done I have more surprises!” He said happily.
“Yuji, you didn’t have to do all of this. I would’ve been fine just spending the day with you.” You felt bad. The only thing you were able to get him was a card from the dollar store and a gift card for his favourite fast food place tucked inside. You didn’t have a lot of time this year and you’ve been stressed out.
“No it’s fine. We spend everyday with each other anyway. Today is special! Plus I wanna do this.”
After your guys movie binge, Yuji had told you to get ready. He wouldn’t tell you where you were going but that you had to dress nice. So you did.
Yuji fought so hard with himself to not rip the spaghetti strapped black dress that ended just above your knees and had a completely opened back(which he didn’t like the thought of you wearing it out, he didn’t argue).
You checked yourself out in the mirror, flattening down every rumpled bumps out of your dress. Your fingers raked themselves through your neatly straightened hair.
“You look perfect,” Yuji’s voice startled you. You found his eyes in the mirror. He was wearing a subtle pink dress shirt with a black tie and black dress pants.
“Although, I do have something that will go perfect with your dress.” He finished as he walked towards you. It was then when you realized he was carrying a little paper shopping bag.
Your heart skipped a beat when he pulled out a long black velvet box. Yuji opened it.
You eyed, through the mirror, the beautiful diamond necklace that sat perfectly in the box accompanied by a set of diamond stud earrings.
You felt your eyes water as you turned around. Yuji had the biggest smile on his face. His light brown orbs began to water a little and you noticed that he was having trouble speaking.
“Yuji, you didn’t have to get this I-“
“No, don’t even start. I had to. I know this isn’t a ring, but these are placeholders for the real deal.”
“Real deal? What are you talking about?”
“Gosh, I thought I was the dense one. I wanna marry you y/n. I’d marry you right here on the spot. But I just think with everything going on, I think it’s best we wait a bit, you know?”
You chuckled lightly as Yuji started to put the necklace on.
“You ran out of money didn’t you?”
“Oh yeah, big time. I honestly thought you were gonna get full on chocolates so we wouldn’t have to go to dinner but seeing you in this dress is worth it.” Yuji snorted as you felt his fingers clasp the necklace around your neck. Once you had the earrings on, you gave Yuji the tightest hug. His arms flew around your waist and he rested his head on top of yours, smelling your shampoo.
“Happy Valentine’s Day. I love you.” He whispered into your hair.
“I love you too, thank you for today.”
You smiled into his chest, your heartbeats syncing together.
“Now let’s go, I’ll pay for dinner.”
“Can’t argue with that! I was waiting for you to say that!” Yuji chanted as he kissed the top of your head. You rolled your eyes playfully as he made his way to the door, you following shortly after.
“You’re lucky I love you too much!”
Sorry this is late, i had to work all day today and the day before i just got back from a trip to even start. Hope you enjoyed!💕
Thank you for the tag, lovely @crepesuzette2023! It's been nice to take some time to think about my fics!
How many works do you have on ao3?
20; 18 are Johnlock (BBC) and two, the most recent ones, are mclennon.
What’s your total word count?
306,378 (I was stunned to see this, I had no idea).
What are your top 5 fics by kudos?
All are Johnlock: Mark Your Calendars, my beloved Erosion, Detours, Plus One and Turned - Part I : Queen and Country.
Do you respond to comments? Why/why not?
I try to be very good about it and respond as often as I can, but the truth is I'm a bit of an emotional wreck so when there's a rush of comments I get overwhelmed and over emotional about them, and tend to put it off for a while. I read them ALL, and I often go back and re-read them.
What's the fic you've written with the angstiest ending?
I had to refresh my memory but it's def Every Other Universe ("What if in every other universe John Watson leaves?"). It's one of my very earliest ones and I cringe a little reading it, but it's a very neat idea. Gretna Green Waltz, a mclennon fic, is very devastating if I may say so myself, and was written as such knowingly. It only reflects reality, though, and that's just as devastating.
What's the fic you've written with the happiest ending?
I think Mark Your Calendars has the happiest ending, judging by the numbers of kudos, but for me as the writer, the cosiest, most joy-bringing ending was that of Simon (or: Love Calls You by Your Name).
Do you write crossovers?
The sadly abandoned Turned series is a crossover with Homeland.
Have you ever received hate on a fic?
Not hate, but some less-than-considerate "when's the next chapter???" comments. I don't bother with them.
Do you write smut? If so, what kind?
Yes I do :)
Have you ever had a fic stolen?
Don't think so!
Have you ever had a fic translated?
I remember being asked, but I'm not sure what happened with it! Some of my fics got podficced, though: Mark Your Calendars is available as podfic, and so is I Have not Lingered (thanks to the lovely @helloliriels)
Have you ever co-written a fic before?
No, I'm so neurotic and particular I don't think I'm cut out for that.
What's your all-time favourite ship?
Mulder and Scully are DEFINITELY the mothership and always will be. I still sigh about them in a special, exasperated way about three times a week. I'm still here with Johnlock of course, but I'm pretty sure mclennon has been in the back of my mind for decades, but I was too haunted by other ships to fall down that rabbit hole. Look at me, though, here I am.
What's a WIP that you want to finish but don't think you ever will?
Turned, very sadly. So much so that I've considered taking it off AO3 but I'm so proud of what I did achieve with it.
What are your writing strengths?
I think my best writing moments are the ones that hook unto my real, personal experiences, not just a general idea of life situations. Erosion is based on my own personal grief and family losses, and Gretna Green Waltz is a retelling of my biggest heartache. I have noticed readers can tell when you're really putting your heart into a story.
What are your writing weaknesses?
English isn't my first language, which means I have to rely on betas which for me sadly slows me down - I want to be able to just write them and post them otherwise I overthink. I'm also a screenwriter irl, and I noticed a pattern that is another weakness - I always have banger openings, or first acts to my stories/screenplays, but sometimes I don't know the ending and I get lost and hesitant. That's why Gretna Green Waltz was SUCH a surprise - much like Junk, the song that haunts Paul throughout the fic, came to him in one piece, GGW landed in my head as a full story. I wrote it in TWO WEEKS! That NEVER happened before!
What are your thoughts on writing dialogue in other languages in a fic?
It really depends on how it's done. If it's 2-3 sentences and they're simple I assume the readers will Google Translate it. Jinglebell stands out as someone who did it really well in multi-chapter fic that's all about Sherlock discovering that John is a polyglot, so it can be done well.
What was the first fandom you wrote for?
Johnlock (for which I started writing during covid in 2020), although as a reader it was TXF, back in in 90s and early 2000s.
What's a fandom/ship you haven't written for yet but want to?
The X-Files. I've had a Scully character study in my head for years that I just can't get right.
What's your favourite fic you've written?
With Johnlock it would have to be the now-abandoned Turned, and mclennon it would be Gretna Green Waltz. I am very proud of both.
