Frank Hudson, Greta, Margaret, & Mary
(PSA: If you’ve been tagged in this post, it’s because I’m crediting you or linking to a meta you wrote! I particularly linked a lot of things at the end I think could be tangentially related. No pressure to read all of this!)
Please allow me to take you on a journey in which I present a theory:
Mary is Frank Hudson’s daughter from a relationship with another woman, and part of her motivation (as a villain, as Moriarty’s agent/possible successor) is to get revenge on Sherlock for having killed her father all those years ago and ruining the drug cartel empire.
I was calling this a crack theory, but uh, given that I’ve now written thousands of words connecting weird dots, I’m gonna say maybe this is potentially not as far-fetched as I initially thought.
Before Sherlock series 4 came out, we were given this delightful niche little “clue” in a Youtube video on the official channel:
Tumblr media
It’s always struck me as odd that this was specifically shown in a video advertising / leading up to series 4... when it seemingly never connected to anything. Why this, of all things?
Let’s review what we know about Mr. Frank Hudson.
• He was sentenced to death in Florida; Sherlock ensured his execution. (ASiP)
• He was executed for double murder and the execution was via lethal injection. He was arrested for “blowing someone’s head off.” (TSoT)
• According to Mrs. Hudson, about their relationship: “It was just a whirlwind thing for us. I knew it wouldn’t work, but I just got sort of swept along. And then we moved to Florida. We had a fantastic time, but of course I didn’t know what he was up to” and “It was purely physical between me and Frank. We couldn’t keep our hands off each other.” What Frank was “up to” included a drug cartel and “all the other women.” (TSoT)
• Mrs. Hudson was a typist in Frank’s drug cartel (and an exotic dancer, which is in YouTube videos in-universe). This is also the scene where she’s present to hear enough to figure out that Mary shot Sherlock; in the original script, it’s made obvious that she was eavesdropping even after walking out. (HLV)
• We’re also given repeated reminders in TLD that Mrs. Hudson was/is somewhat of a badass. She tells Sherlock “you’re not my first smackhead, Sherlock Holmes,” and whether or not any of that (the revolver, the kidnapping of Sherlock, the car) is actually literally real, I take it mostly as a blatant reminder that Mrs. Hudson has a past filled with “not good” people.
A lot of this info is given in more comedic moments... but I think because it is repeatedly mentioned with consistent detail, especially largely in season 3 when Mary arrives (partially to mirror John/Mary’s doomed relationship), it shouldn’t be swept aside.
Speaking of Mary, let’s get into it.
In ACD’s The Sign of Four, Mary Morstan’s story centers heavily around the loss of her father. That’s also the story that involves the Agra treasure, and Mary notably receives 6 pearls in the mail as part of the mystery. Keep all of this in mind because it’s going to be relevant as we go.
First, let’s roll all the way back to The Abominable Bride.
(All transcripts I will be quoting are from the inimitableAriane DeVere.)
Giles, & Morse Hudson
Tumblr media Tumblr media
The abominable bride herself–who I trust we all know mirrors Mary at this point lol–stands on the balcony and aims her guns at people on the street while saying “You?” / “You, or me?” One of the people she aims at is this man, who is listed in the credits as Giles. I always found it odd that he was named, so I decided to look him up in relation to Sherlock Holmes.
“Giles” connects to Giles Conover, the criminal in the 1944 Sherlock Holmes movie The Pearl of Death. That movie is loosely based on ACD’s The Adventure of the Six Napoleans. In the movie, Giles (who is not in the ACD story) stole the Borgia Pearl and hid it in a bust of Napoleon. In case there’s any doubt, we can know for a fact that Moffat and Gatiss are familiar with this movie because they referenced it in TGG previously; the Golem assassin is a nod to The Creeper.
So I was like, why that movie specifically? What’s significant, and how would that connect to the bride?
And as I’m sure you’ve figured out by now... they later referenced that movie again in TST. The writers called back to both the ACD story and the 1944 movie, very specifically.
Referenced movie details I noticed in TST include the following: Sherlock calls Lestrade “Giles.” The Borgia Pearl (movie phrasing, as opposed to “the black pearl of the Borgias”) is mentioned multiple times; we’ll go back to that. We are also pointedly told by Ajay that one of the members of AGRA was killed via a broken back, which is how a murder happens in the 1944 movie.
As for TST’s references to the original Napoleon story by ACD... there are many, but there’s one thing they pointedly didn’t reference (unless I missed it) that I find interesting: in the ACD story, 3 of the 6 busts were at the shop of a Morse Hudson. Beppo, the criminal in the story, worked at Morse Hudson’s shop to have access to the locations of those 3 busts. Even in The Six Thatchers version on John’s blog, Beppo is the criminal but Morse Hudson was not mentioned.
So I thought... alright, Morse? What morse code have we seen in the show? Well, there’s UMQRA, from The Hounds of Baskerville.
Tumblr media
I poked around and some genius anon on @inevitably-johnlocked‘s blog once said that if you encode UMQRA with HOUND using a vigenere cypher, you get BAKED. Mary bakes her own bread, according to Sherlock’s deductions in TEH. The abominable bride, in the above scene, shoots at/into a bakery.
Edit: @rosie_ww on Twitter aka @silverybees pointed me to this, from THoB:
SHERLOCK: You’ve been to see Mr Chatterjee again.
MRS HUDSON: Pardon?
SHERLOCK: Sandwich shop. That’s a new dress, but there’s flour on the sleeve. You wouldn’t dress like that for baking.
(Friendly reminder that shortly thereafter we find out that Mr. Chatterjee has other women)
Does this morse code / BAKED business necessarily mean anything by itself? No, and of anything in this post, it’s the biggest stretch. But it’s still kind of wild, because let’s recap so far:
• We have Morse Hudson in The Adventure of the Six Napoleons, a story which is heavily referenced in TST
• TST heavily connects to Mary / AGRA (we’ll get to how specifically)
• TST also heavily connects to The Pearl of Death, which connects to TAB
• And not only that, but The Pearl of Death connects to the exact scene in TAB where the bride shoots @ Giles and the bread shop. The bread shop could connect to the UMQRA morse code in the show... meaning “Morse” (code, and therefore Hudson) could then connect to Mary.
Tumblr media
Morse Hudson -> The Six Napoleons -> TST -> The Pearl of Death (“Giles” etc.) -> TAB (“Giles”) -> Mary, the bride
Oh what a tangled web we weave. That’s a Hudson to Mary.
But let’s keep going. Better stuff to come.
The Black Pearl of the Borgias In TST
Let’s play the game of following the trail of the Black Pearl. Shout out to @miadifferent and @impossibleleaf, because their combo post here I came across was very helpful for showing me the best way to write this out to make it easily understandable. I will be quoting / paraphrasing them below!
The first time we hear about the Pearl, it’s from Mycroft, who connects it to Moriarty’s final activities:
MYCROFT: In the last year of his life, James Moriarty was involved with four political assassinations over 70 assorted robberies and terrorist attacks, including a chemical weapons factory in North Korea and had latterly shown some interest in tracking down the Black Pearl of the Borgias, which is still missing by the way, in case you feel like applying yourself to something practical.
We also learn that the Pearl is somehow connected to London.
HOPKINS: Interpol think, the case of the Borgia Pearl trail leads back to London, so..
So we have Moriarty -> Black Pearl -> London...
And next up, there’s Sherlock’s “fake” deduction about Greta Bengtsdotter (who has always very obviously made us all think about Mary.)
SHERLOCK: Your wife is a spy. That’s right. Her real name is Greta Bengtsdotter. Swedish by birth and probably the most dangerous spy in the world. She’s been operating deep undercover for the past four years now as your wife for one reason only: to get near the American embassy which is across the road from your flat. Tomorrow the U.S. president will be at the embassy as part of an official state visit. As the president greets members of staff, Greta Bengtsdotter, disguised as a twenty-two stone cleaner, will inject the president in the back of the neck with a dangerous new drug hidden inside a secret compartment insider her padded armpit. This drug will then render the president entirely susceptible to the will of their new master, none other than James Moriarty. Moriarty will then use the president as a pawn to destabilize the United Nations General Assembly which is due to vote on a nuclear non-proliferation treaty tipping the balance in favour of a first strike policy against Russia. This chain of events will then prove unstoppable thus precipitating World War 3.
The name “Greta” is derived from the name Margareta, which comes from the Greek word margarites. It means pearl. Further versions of this name are Margarita / Margaret / Maggie.
Thus, we add her in: Moriarty -> Greta -> Black Pearl -> London
So when Sherlock finds the AGRA stick in the busts of Margaret Thatcher, he says to Mary...
SHERLOCK: I was so convinced it was Moriarty, I couldn’t see what was right under my nose. I expected a pearl.
Sherlock expected to find a pearl (Greta / a spy), but instead he found AGRA/Mary’s identity. He actually found what he was looking for, but he just didn’t recognize it.
And it actually still makes sense:
Margaret Thatcher’s bust -> Black Pearl -> Greta (“pearl”, spy) -> Mary (spy) -> AGRA memory stick
That’s how it went in the plot. It’s a subconscious connection.
So what’s ACD have to say about all that then?
This is the point where I remind you...
In ACD’s The Sign of Four, Mary Morstan’s story centers heavily around the loss of her father. That’s also the story that involves the Agra treasure, and Mary notably receives 6 pearls in the mail as part of the mystery.
So all of this does have connections back to ACD canon; who is surprised?
But what do we know about Mary’s past from the show’s canon in His Last Vow? Let’s look at some other reminders.
SHERLOCK: By your skill set, you are – or were – an intelligence agent. Your accent is currently English but I suspect you are not. You’re on the run from something; you’ve used your skills to disappear; Magnussen knows your secret, which is why you were going to kill him; and I assume you befriended Janine in order to get close to him.
+
MAGNUSSEN: All those wet jobs for the CIA. Ooh! She’s gone a bit... freelance now. Bad girl.
Mary’s not English; she could be Swedish, she could be American, but regardless–Sherlock deduced she’s a linguist in TEH. And either way, she’s worked for America.
Americans crop up a weird amount in BBC Sherlock (and ACD canon too really), and usually in negative contexts. I just want to highlight one American connection from The Abominable Bride, about Emilia Ricoletti:
SHERLOCK: So she decided to make her death count. She was already familiar with the secret societies of America and was able to draw on their methods of fear and intimidation to publicly – very publicly – confront Sir Eustace Carmichael with the sins of his past.
HOOPER: He knew her out in the States. Promised her everything... marriage, position – and then he had his way with her and threw her over, left her abandoned and penniless.
Also, where was it that Mr. Hudson had his drug cartel? Oh yeah. Florida.
We’ll go back to that.
More Margarets In BBC Sherlock
So we’ve officially got one connection where Margaret relates to Mary. TST makes that pretty clear.
Now, where else have we encountered the name Margaret in the show?
Three places (at least, that I’ve caught):
1. A Study In Pink.
The first victim of Jeff Hope the serial killer is Sir Jeffrey Patterson. He was having an affair with his personal assistant Helen, despite being married to his wife Margaret Patterson.
Tumblr media
It’s a well-known fact in this fandom that the victims in ASiP are considered mirrors for John Watson, highlighting things that would lead to his own unhappiness/death–possibly even by suicide. (TJLCE video)  So, let’s say Jeffrey Patterson is a mirror for John.
Helen the personal assistant (who says “I love you”) is, perhaps, a mirror for Sherlock. She’s wearing a deep purple shirt.
Tumblr media
Does that connect Margaret Patterson, who insists her husband was happy, to Mary?
MARGARET PATTERSON: My husband was a happy man who lived life to the full. He loved his family and his work – and that he should have taken his own life in this way is a mystery and a shock to all who knew him.
[looks at John’s unhappiness in HLV after a month of marriage, looks at series 4 theories about John faking his suicide / trying to commit suicide, laughs nervously]
Well. Moving on.
2. The Hounds of Baskerville.
Tumblr media
Project HOUND was a CIA Classified / American project that Major Barrymore was involved in. The Major is apparently a fan of Margaret Thatcher, and the password to his laptop is Maggie. Sherlock types “Margare” then hesitantly backtracks and writes Maggie and it works. It’s worth noting that in the script it was drafted to just be Margaret.
3. The Sign of Three.
Tumblr media
MRS. HUDSON: My best friend, Margaret – she was my chief bridesmaid. We were going to be best friends forever, we always said that; but I hardly saw her after that. [...] She cried the whole day, saying, “Ooh, it’s the end of an era.” She was probably right, really. I remember she left early. I mean, who leaves a wedding early?
So in BBC Sherlock, the name Margaret is connected to...
• The Margaret Thatcher busts in The Six Thatchers, which connects to Mary/AGRA/pearls/Greta the Swedish spy
• Margaret Patterson, the wife of a mirror for John who was the victim of murder that masqueraded as suicide. This Margaret insists that the John mirror was happy in their marriage, but the John mirror was having an affair with a Sherlock mirror
• Project HOUND, of the CIA. I find this exceedingly interesting because the name "Margaret” has connections to Moriarty/Mary, and this could mean it’s safe to guess that this case is/was connected to the wider Moriarty web. We see Sherlock hallucinate Moriarty when drugged by the fog, sure, but otherwise Moriarty’s handiwork supposedly isn’t involved in this case... but maybe it was indirectly, by Mary in the CIA. Just ruminating.
• Margaret was Mrs. Hudson’s best friend, who left the wedding early when Mrs. Hudson and Frank got married
Re: that last bullet point, here is what I am suggesting as a possibility: Margaret was one of Mr. Hudson’s “other women.” Margaret left the wedding early because she was sad about the marriage, obviously, but maybe she wasn’t in love with Mrs. H like we would naturally assume (per Sherlock leaving the wedding early because he loves John). Maybe Margaret was in love with Mr. Hudson.
Maybe Mary is the daughter of Margaret and Mr. Hudson, and (as previously stated) she’s motivated to get revenge on Sherlock for killing her father and ruining the drug cartel empire. Who knows what would’ve happened to her mother Margaret, in that case, too.
This is speculation, of course, yes. Yet [waves to all the ridiculous web of connections I’ve delved deeply into, and the Frank Hudson hangman] can you blame me?
But, maybe you’re wondering... why would I think she’s the daughter of a Hudson specifically, even aside from all this Margaret stuff?
Well.
Hudsons In ACD Canon
Where is the name “Hudson” used in ACD canon, other than for Mrs. Hudson?
Three places (that I’ve caught; my ACD canon knowledge is limited):
• Morse Hudson in The Adventure of the Six Napoleons, as discussed above; not mentioned in BBC Sherlock canon for some reason, yet strongly tied to the story that inspired TST.
• A name drop of “Hudson” in The Adventure of the Five Orange Pips.
Quick run-down of some aspects of this case: the client, John Openshaw, asks Holmes for help because a series of mysterious letters seems to be connected with the recent suspicious deaths of his uncle Elias and his father Joseph. The letters included 5 orange pips, and KKK on the envelope. When his uncle received his letter, he burnt a bunch of secret personal papers. One paper survived; it’s on that paper that we see Hudson’s name, associated with the KKK, and otherwise oddly unrelated to the case.
Holmes moved the lamp, and we both bent over the sheet of paper, which showed by its ragged edge that it had indeed been torn from a book. It was headed, “March, 1869,” and beneath were the following enigmatical notices:
“4th. Hudson came. Same old platform.
“7th. Set the pips on McCauley, Paramore, and John Swain of St. Augustine.
“9th. McCauley cleared.
“10th. John Swain cleared.
“12th. Visited Paramore. All well.”
Here are other ~features of interest~ in this case to me: Openshaw’s uncle Elias was a planter in Florida for many years. Florida is mentioned by Holmes as a “notable” state where the KKK formed a branch; the others are Tennessee, Louisiana, the Carolinas, and Georgia (hello to Tbilisi, Georgia being in TST seemingly at random). It is also mentioned that the fear of someone or something is what drove Elias from America to England. There’s also a very random name drop of “Mary” in this story that doesn’t relate to the case, told as part of Openshaw’s story, in which I can only assume Mary was a maid?
OPENSHAW, QUOTING UNCLE ELIAS: “They may do what they like, but I’ll checkmate them still,’ said he with an oath. ‘Tell Mary that I shall want a fire in my room to-day, and send down to Fordham, the Horsham lawyer.’
The fact that the name Mary manages to be in this cracks me up.
The orange pips / secret societies in America / etc. all heavily tie into The Abominable Bride, and the women’s hoods were visually reminiscent of the KKK. Sir Eustace’s line in TAB of “Death” (when he receives the pips) is a direct quote from Elias in this story when he receives his pips–and a quote that Mary echoes in TST when she completes Vivian Norbury’s sentence in the aquarium.
VIVIAN NORBURY: I’m just like the merchant in the story. I thought I could outrun the inevitable. I’ve always been looking over my shoulder; always expecting to see the grim figure of...
MARY: Death.
So, in summary we have: a name drop of Hudson in a story that factors in Florida, Georgia, pips, secret societies, the KKK, and even a name drop of Mary.
• Hudson is the criminal in The Adventure of the Gloria Scott.
This case is the one Holmes credits as his first case, and it inspired his future profession. He’s telling Watson the story. It happened in his university days and centers on his friend Victor Trevor (TFP says hi, lmao). More specifically, it centers on Victor Trevor’s father. I won’t go into all the details, and the plot summary on Wikipedia is good if you’re curious, but–
A quick run-down of some ~features of interest~ in this case: Mr. Trevor the elder is being blackmailed by the criminal Hudson because of their old criminal past together with others. Hudson is threatening him with exposure / public shame, and Mr. Trevor is forced to employ him. Victor gets pissed about it and eventually upsets Hudson enough that Hudson leaves in a very “this isn’t over” kind of way. Later, Mr. Trevor dies from a stroke after receiving a letter that threatened him via a skip code. It is a skip code of specifically every third word, beginning with the first.
Full skip code message: "The supply of game for London is going steadily up. Head-keeper Hudson, we believe, has been now told to receive all orders for fly-paper and for preservation of your hen pheasant's life."
Decoded message: "The game is up. Hudson has told all. Fly for your life."
(It’s not a game anymore...)
Who do we have in show canon who recognizes a skip code on sight of specifically every third word, beginning with the first?
Tumblr media
All together now: Mary.
(Bonus points for “Save John Watson” being the phrase Mary says in her creepy posthumous DVDs. Bonus points x2 for the fact that this text was sent by Magnussen, the “Napoleon of blackmail,” to Mary when he was supposedly trying to find Sherlock’s pressure point. But anyway!)
Another feature of interest about the Gloria Scott case: Holmes deduces that Mr. Trevor was once connected to someone with the initials J.A. whom he wanted to forget, guessing it was an old lover. Mr. Trevor momentarily faints in shock. Holmes guessed this based on an old arm tattoo that Mr. Trevor had tried to get rid of, where the initials are blurry. This later turns out to be wrong, because Mr. Trevor’s previous name was James Armitage–J.A.–when he was a criminal, and that is the reason behind the tattoo. (JA? AJ / Ajay? Much to think about)
The J.A. tattoo deduction was referenced in The Six Thatchers, when Sherlock deduces that the client had a Japanese girlfriend he is now indifferent about.
SHERLOCK: You’ve got a Japanese tattoo in the crook of your elbow in the name ‘Akako.’ It’s obvious you’ve tried to have it removed.
KINGSLEY: But surely that means I wanna forget her, not that I’m indifferent.
SHERLOCK: If she’d really hurt your feelings, you would have had the word obliterated, but the first attempt wasn’t successful and you haven’t tried again, so it seems you can live with the slightly blurred memory of Akako, hence the indifference.
I’m bothering to highlight this in TST because after Sherlock explains it, the client remarks upon it being “simple”... and that’s when Sherlock immediately launches into his ~fake~ long-winded deduction about his wife being Greta the spy, as I already talked about above. Wild.
One last fascinating thing about the Gloria Scott: this case is referenced in 2 other ACD stories–The Sussex Vampire (John texting in TST), and The Musgrave Ritual (TFP). Gotta love that.
So, uh, what if Mrs. Hudson’s “case” (getting her husband executed) was one of Sherlock’s “firsts” that inspires him to become a consultive detective full-time? We’re told in ASiP that he ensured Frank Hudson’s execution “a few years back.” The inexactness of that year amount drives me bonkers, but I think it’s potentially plausible.
Short Coda: Ghost Stories...
In Mr. Trevor’s reply to Holmes’ (incorrect) J.A. tattoo deduction, he includes the following line:
“Of all ghosts, the ghosts of our old loves are the worst.”
Mark Gatiss talked a lot about ghost stories. In the Sherlock Chronicles book (which I own) teasing series 4, he said, “I can certainly give you one word. Ghosts...” and in this interview he said “There’s a conspiracy theory about everything and they’re almost the modern equivalent of ghost stories. And the great thing is, you can have all the tropes of a ghost story. . . There are lots of people in happy marriages who turn out to have terrible secrets or to have done some awful deed in the past that must be paid for in the present. In Doyle’s stories, those are the ghosts you need to worry about.”
And here are the lines we get from Holmes in The Abominable Bride about ghosts (that aren’t literal):
You may, however, rest assured there are no ghosts in this world... Save those we make for ourselves.
+
We all have a past, Watson. Ghosts – they are the shadows that define our every sunny day. Sir Eustace knows he’s a marked man.
+
The avenging ghost – a legend to strike terror into the heart of any man with malicious intent; a spectre to stalk those unpunished brutes whose reckoning is long overdue.
While typing, I’ve now galaxy-brained my way to the realization that Mrs. H was canonically an “abominable bride” to Frank Hudson and literally murdered him (with Sherlock’s help), just like the women in the special. She’s also shown as one of the women ignored/disparaged in the special (”I’m your landlady, not a plot device”) but just isn’t shown in the crypt/society. So that’s, uh... interesting.
In (Semi-)Conclusion: A Summary
We have the following significant points at minimum:
• A Frank Hudson clue in a series 4 video
• One reference where Mary is undeniably connected to a Hudson who was a criminal in ACD canon (skip code)
• One ACD Hudson who was heavily connected to The Six Napoleons story, aka The Six Thatchers
• One ACD Hudson name-dropped in a story that heavily connects to The Abominable Bride, and Florida
• A bizarre pile of evidence that all Margaret mentions in the show could relate back to Mary the ex-CIA spy, in some way or another
• A Margaret connected to Mrs. Hudson who could’ve been in love with Frank Hudson (in Florida)
• The overall theme of s4 being ghosts from past deeds and un(happy) marriages coming to haunt people. And lest we forget, “ghost” Mary literally haunts Sherlock and John after her “death.”
Does that cover it? I feel like that covers it.
Of course, I absolutely could be reading into a ton of things that are unrelated, but... Who is to say ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
Random Related Stuff
Not required reading, but while poking around, I’ve found other things that could or could not connect to the above theory. I’m just gonna... info dump it right here. It could all be meaningless, it could all connect, it could be unrelated! You decide! Lots of meta links involved below, so credit where credit is due.
• I knew I wasn’t the first to come up with this concept/possibility of Mary being a Hudson. While building this post, I ran a search and came across this old one by @the-7-percent-solution, who posited there’s a letter game at play of AEIOU involving Mary’s monstrous regiment of various characters and connects Amo/Love to Mary. I love this concept, and while I do think there are other elements/aspects in play for the plot besides just this, that post still has pieces that can work nicely; doesn’t matter that it was written before TFP aired.
• Frequently thinking about how Sherlock said “Mrs. Hudson? Leave Baker Street? England would fall,” because what does Mrs. Hudson do in TLD? She leaves Baker Street.
Tumblr media
• All of the above cursed elements haunt me. (Arwel’s Instagram post was April of this year.) Note: there’s another tweet Arwel jokingly posted of this photo years ago, but that tweet’s caption was connected to Brexit based on dates / my memory (i.e. “England has fallen”), so I’m not including it lol.
• In TFP, when Mrs. Hudson is vacuuming, she’s listening to Iron Maiden’s “The Number of the Beast.” The lyrics we get are “666, the Number of the Beast. Hell and fire was spawned to be released.” The other time 666 is mentioned was by Mary in TST, in reference to Rosie.
Tumblr media
• Mrs. Hudson is in the center of the 221B promo pic for series 4, as noticed by @sherlocks-salty-blog.
Tumblr media
• This cursed pic of Mary’s "ring from her past” on top of a series 4, episode 3 script (??) that Amanda took has haunted me since she tweeted it. Mary wears this ring on-screen in TEH, and you can see it when Sherlock deduces her.
Tumblr media
• The Gabrielle Ashdown passport (in TST) is from America.
Tumblr media
• Janine (who many of us notice is likely involved with Mary / Moriarty of course) often wears pearls, as @sherlockmeta noticed. Mary also wears pearl earrings in series 4 promo shots but never in s4 episodes (that I can find/remember). I also always think that Mary and Mrs. Hudson are dressed very similarly in s4 promo images (see all promos here).
• @raggedyblue discussed how Sherlock’s window deduction in TLD sounds a lot like Mrs. Hudson’s kitchen in 221A, and how a sheet of paper being pinned/folded is an opposite element in ACD’s The Sign of Four. The re-folded paper was a map leading to the AGRA treasure, and Mary found it in her father’s desk. Brilliant catch. Of course, in the show, the paper says Miss Me which is also heavily connected to Mary.
• The mystery of the little girls with blond and braided hair, as compiled by @ebaeschnbliah, is also going to haunt me. I suggest reading the post, but minor summary: during s4 setlock, there was filming with Ben and Mark at Ogmore Castle with a little girl "wearing a skirt or dress, and her hair was blonde and in pigtails,” and she was running circles around Sherlock. There are two separate reports from people who saw this and mentioned it had to do with Mary; at first glance it bears similarities to Eurus scenes we got in TFP, but seems different in description. This also brings to mind the little girl with blonde braided hair in TEH at the bonfire, who notably wears a bright red jacket just like Mary. And there’s also a doll with blond braided pigtails in Magnussen’s mind palace.
• @gosherlocked has posts about “The Children of Sherlock” (part 1)(part 2) that highlight how children are frequently victims in this show. Metaphorically, I find this interesting if Mary plays a role of a “wronged child” avenging her father, regardless of age.
• Let’s talk music in TLD–or at least, one piece of it. When Mrs. Hudson drops the teacup, Mozart’s “Andante From Piano Concerto #21” plays. That specific second movement was used in the 1967 Swedish film Elvira Madigan. Sweden, of course, immediately reminded me of Greta the spy (aka Mary) being Swedish. After I realized this info, I ran a search to see if anyone else had mentioned this movie and I found this post, where @tjlcisthenewsexy and @possiblyimbiassed discussed how it’s a story of 2 doomed lovers who die via suicide-by-revolver. This is significant because Sherlock drops a revolver to catch the tea; death replaced by (gay) love?
• Speaking of Sweden: in The Game Is Now, Sherlock is abroad in Sweden. This is mentioned more than once: first, in this audio message between Sherlock and Mycroft (“Sweden sends its regards.” “It does?” “No, not really.”). This audio message also includes “This is not an international game of sardines.” Fish reference? Aquarium?
The second Sweden mention is visually, in this video. See below. (Also, in both, the characters say “real people,” which I can’t help but feel is a fourth wall break of them being fictional?)
Tumblr media Tumblr media
I hate this Sweden stuff specifically. Thank you.
This post is so much longer than I expected it would be, thank you for reading all of this if you did, Johnlock is real, Mary is a villain, etc.
Come yell at me on Twitter @CharCubed!
Also, I made a secret sideblog @frankhudson to just reblog meta or info I might want to be able to find later lmao. Feel free to poke around if you want.

More Great SNES Games - Jan 1995
January of 1995 had begun with a bang. Thanks to my disappointing Final Fantasy 3 experience over the Christmas period I now found myself plowing plenty of hours into the cyberpunk inspired world of Shadowrun on my SNES. Part RPG and part action adventure this game felt unlike anything I had played up until this point.
Tumblr media
Of course being a single player experience Shadowrun was solely a game I would play in the evenings after college. The rest of our spare time Ben and I were still playing NBA Jam, rewatching his collection of basketball VHS tapes hoping to develop crazy new moves and put them into practice on his homemade court. To add even more basketball goodness into the mix Ben had recently acquired NBA Live 95 which unlike NBA Jam was a more serious and realistic basketball experience. I must admit it took me a few attempts to get the hang of the 5-on-5 games once again plus the isometric court perspective was confusing at first. However after a couple of games NBA Live became a firm favourite between us (plus I loved the squeaky shoe sound effects).
January soon turned into February and this month two brand new Super Nintendo titles were due to enter our lives. First up was the new and highly anticipated game from Rare which I would receive for my birthday. This game was of course Donkey Kong Country which had been previewed for months leading up to its official release. I remember NMS magazine dedicating a whopping twenty six pages to its review and scoring it a massive 97% (which looking back was a smidge too high in my opinion).
Tumblr media
DKC may have been a bit overrated but you couldn’t argue against its stunning 3D rendered graphics making it easily one of the best looking games on the system to date. As a platformer it didn’t compare to the likes of Super Mario World, the longterm playability just simply wasn’t there but as a showcase to the strengths of the SNES this game defiantly delivered. Along with its jaw dropping graphics was a array of beautiful musical arrangements to accompany each stage. My personal favourite was (and still is) Aquatic Ambiance which can be found during stage six and brings a tear to my eye even today.
As with many big Super Nintendo releases back in the 90’s the price tag was pretty hefty costing around £60 new but the game did come with a free music CD titled Go Ape. On first loading up this CD into my dads outrageously large music centre I was expecting to be treated to the in-game music. As it turns out the CD comprised of several famous (at the time) musical acts and included bands such as Primal Scream, Terrovision and Oasis. I must admit the Go Ape CD was pretty awesome at the time but for some reason I ended up giving it away to a girl in our local chip shop?
With plenty of hidden areas and collectibles to find DKC kept me well occupied during the early months of 1995. I remember the game being pretty tough with the later levels becoming almost impossible to beat. In fact it was only a couple of months ago that I managed to see Donkey Kong Country all the way through to the end using many a save state on my SNES Mini.
Tumblr media
The other must have SNES title that month which Ben quickly picked up was NBA Jam Tournament Edition. Basically a souped-up version of the original with more players, teams and unlockable characters. The main differences to the first game was the option of on-court power-ups and Hot Spots which if activated correctly would enable players to score up to ten points with a single shot on basket which lead to many ferocious and high scoring matches.
I have many great memories playing NBA Jam around this time with Ben. We were now both seventeen and attending different colleges. As with most teenagers at this point in their lives new and more exciting opportunities (mainly alcohol and girls) were starting to intervene with our video gaming time. For these reasons NBA Jam Tournament Edition was one of the last great couch co-op gaming experiences which I remember having (at least for a few years) and marks an important yet poignant turning point in my adolescent life.

THE BOOK OF ESTHER - From The Douay-Rheims Bible - Latin Vulgate
Chapter 1
INTRODUCTION.
This Book takes its name from queen Esther; whose history is here recorded. The general opinion of almost all commentators on the Holy Scripture, make Mardochai the writer of it: which also may be collected below from C. ix. 20. Ch. --- He and the queen were certainly authors of the letter, (H.) enjoining the celebration of the feast of Purim, or "lots," which is the ground-work (C.) of the present narration. D. --- The compiler has also had recourse to the archives of the kingdom of Persia: so that his work has all the authority that can be required of a profane historian; and being moreover inspired in all its parts, we cannot refuse to receive it with the utmost respect. Those additions which are not now in Hebrew, (C.) though they were perhaps formerly, (W. Origen. D.) have been carefully preserved by S. Jerom, and were recognized by the ancient Vulg. as they are at present by the Greek, without any distinction. Lysimachus, the Greek translator, was probably the author of them. C. xi. 1. C. --- The objections of Capellus against this "Greek scribbler," as he is pleased to style him, despising the judgment of both Jews and Christians, are in general very unaccountably borrowed (H.) from the Latin version, and are easily refuted. Houbigant. --- Those Jews, who have rejected this work entirely, with Melito, (Eus. Hist. iv. 26. S. Greg. Naz. &c.) ought not to prevail against the consent of the majority, (C.) expressed in the Councils of Laodicea, Carthage, Trent, sess. 4, &c. To read this book according to the order of time, we should begin C. xi. v. 2, &c. C. i. ii. and xii. and iii. to v. 14; then we find the distress of the Jews in the rest of that chapter, and in C. xiii. to v. 8, and their delivery in C. iv. to ix. v. 17, and C. xiii. v. 8, &c. and C. xiv. xv. and xvi. The consequences of these events are recorded C. ix. v. 17, &c. to C. xi. 1. (W.) with which verse the book ends, in the Greek editions. H. --- They vary considerably, as did the copies of the ancient Vulgate, which called forth the complaints of S. Jerom, Pref. But the Church has distinguished what was spurious from the genuine word of God; so that the doubts of Lyran, Sixtus, (Bib. viii.) &c. respecting the fragments at the end of the book being not canonical, ought no longer to be indulged; much less can the boldness of many Lutherans, (C.) and particularly of Le Clerc, (Houbigant) be tolerated, who represent the whole work as a mere fiction. The Jews have a greater respect for it than for any of the prophets; whose works, they say, will perish at the coming of the Messias: whereas this will subsist with the books of Moses, and the feast of Purim will never be abolished. C. ix. 28. Maimon. --- Ben. Gorion (ii. 2.) admits the additions. But Josephus is silent about them, as he probably did not find them in his copy. C. --- He recites, however, both the epistles of Assuerus. Ant. xi. 6. D. --- It is not agreed whether these events happened before or after the captivity. But it is now most commonly supposed, that Esther was married to Darius Hystaspes, A. 3489, about the time of the dedication of the temple. C. xiv. 9. He had been on the throne six years, and reigned other thirty. See Herod. vii. 4. C. --- Josephus thinks that Esther was the queen of Artaxerxes Longimanus, who was a great friend of the Jews. D. --- The Thalmud attributes this work to the great Synagogue, consisting of Esdras, Mardochai, Joachim, &c. and, as various persons might write the same history, the Greek, with the additions, seems to be taken from one copy, and the Hebrew from another rather more concise, (Huet. D.) but equally inspired. H.
The additional Notes in this Edition of the New Testament will be marked with the letter A. Such as are taken from various Interpreters and Commentators, will be marked as in the Old Testament. B. Bristow, C. Calmet, Ch. Challoner, D. Du Hamel, E. Estius, J. Jansenius, M. Menochius, Po. Polus, P. Pastorini, T. Tirinus, V. Bible de Vence, W. Worthington, Wi. Witham. — The names of other authors, who may be occasionally consulted, will be given at full length.
Verses are in English and Latin.

Chapter 1
King Assuerus maketh a great feast. Queen Vasthi being sent for refuseth to come: for which disobedience she is deposed.
[1] In the days of Assuerus, who reigned from India to Ethiopia over a hundred and twenty-seven provinces:
In diebus Assueri, qui regnavit ab India usque Aethiopiam super centum viginti septem provincias :
[2] When he sat on the throne of his kingdom, the city Susan was the capital of his kingdom.
quando sedit in solio regni sui, Susan civitas regni ejus exordium fuit.
[3] Now in the third year of his reign he made a great feast for all the princes, and for his servants, for the most mighty of the Persians, and the nobles of the Medes, and the governors of the provinces in his sight,
Tertio igitur anno imperii sui fecit grande convivium cunctis principibus, et pueris suis, fortissimis Persarum, et Medorum inclytis, et praefectis provinciarum coram se,
[4] That he might shew the riches of the glory of his kingdom, and the greatness, and boasting of his power, for a long time, to wit, for a hundred and fourscore days.
ut ostenderet divitias gloriae regni sui, ac magnitudinem, atque jactantiam potentiae suae, multo tempore, centum videlicet et octoginta diebus.
[5] And when the days of the feast were expired, he invited all the people that were found in Susan, from the greatest to the least: and commanded a feast to be made seven days in the court of the garden, and of the wood, which was planted by the care and the hand of the king.
Cumque implerentur dies convivii, invitavit omnem populum, qui inventus est in Susan, a maximo usque ad minimum : et jussit septem diebus convivium praeparari in vestibulo horti, et nemoris, quod regio cultu et manu consitum erat.
[6] And there were hung up on every side sky coloured, and green, and violet hangings, fastened with cords of silk, and of purple, which were put into rings of ivory, and were held up with marble pillars. The beds also were of gold and silver, placed in order upon a floor paved with porphyry and white marble: which was embellished with painting of wonderful variety.
[7] And they that were invited, drank in golden cups, and the meats were brought in divers vessels one after another. Wine also in abundance and of the best was presented, as was worthy of a king's magnificence.
Bibebant autem qui invitati erant, aureis poculis, et aliis atque aliis vasis cibi inferebantur. Vinum quoque, ut magnificentia regia dignum erat, abundans, et praecipuum ponebatur.
[8] Neither was there any one to compel them to drink that were not willing, but as the king had appointed, who set over every table one of his nobles, that every man might take what he would.
Nec erat qui nolentes cogeret ad bibendum, sed sicut rex statuerat, praeponens mensis singulos de principibus suis ut sumeret unusquisque quod vellet.
[9] Also Vasthi the queen made a feast for the women in the palace, where king Assuerus was used to dwell.
Vasthi quoque regina fecit convivium feminarum in palatio, ubi rex Assuerus manere consueverat.
[10] Now on the seventh day, when the king was merry, and after very much drinking was well warmed with wine, he commanded Mauman, and Bazatha, and Harbona, and Bagatha, and Abgatha, and Zethar, and Charcas, the seven eunuchs that served in his presence,
[11] To bring in queen Vasthi before the king, with the crown set upon her head, to shew her beauty to all the people and the princes: for she was exceeding beautiful.
ut introducerent reginam Vasthi coram rege, posito super caput ejus diademate, ut ostenderet cunctis populis et principibus pulchritudinem illius : erat enim pulchra valde.
[12] But she refused, and would not come at the king's commandment, which he had signified to her by the eunuchs. Whereupon the king, being angry, and inflamed with a very great fury,
Quae renuit, et ad regis imperium, quod per eunuchos mandaverat, venire contempsit. Unde iratus rex, et nimio furore succensus,
[13] Asked the wise men, who according to the custom of the kings, were always near his person, and all he did was by their counsel, who knew the laws, and judgments of their forefathers:
interrogavit sapientes, qui ex more regio semper ei aderant, et illorum faciebat cuncta consilio, scientium leges, ac jura majorum
[14] (Now the chief and nearest him were, Charsena, and Sethar, and Admatha, and Tharsis, and Mares, and Marsana, and Mamuchan, seven princes of the Persians, and of the Medes, who saw the face of the king, and were used to sit first after him:)
( erant autem primi et proximi, Charsena, et Sethar, et Admatha, et Tharsis, et Mares, et Marsana, et Mamuchan, septem duces Persarum, atque Medorum, qui videbant faciem regis, et primi post eum residere soliti erant) :
[15] What sentence ought to pass upon Vasthi the queen, who had refused to obey the commandment of king Assuerus, which he had sent to her by the eunuchs?
cui sententiae Vasthi regina subjaceret, quae Assueri regis imperium, quod per eunuchos mandaverat, facere noluisset.
[16] And Mamuchan answered, in the hearing of the king and the princes: Queen Vasthi hath not only injured the king, but also all the people and princes that are in all the provinces of king Assuerus.
Responditque Mamuchan, audiente rege atque principibus : Non solum regem laesit regina Vasthi, sed et omnes populos, et principes, qui sunt in cunctis provinciis regis Assueri.
[17] For this deed of the queen will go abroad to all women, so that they will despise their husbands, and will say: King Assuerus commanded that queen Vasthi should come in to him, and she would not.
Egredietur enim sermo reginae ad omnes mulieres, ut contemnant viros suos, et dicant : Rex Assuerus jussit ut regina Vasthi intraret ad eum, et illa noluit.
[18] And by this example all the wives of the princes of the Persians and the Medes will slight the commandments of their husbands: wherefore the king's indignation is just.
Atque hoc exemplo omnes principum conjuges Persarum atque Medorum, parvipendent imperia maritorum : unde regis justa est indignatio.
[19] If it please thee, let an edict go out from thy presence, and let it be written according to the law of the Persians and of the Medes, which must not be altered, that Vasthi come in no more to the king, but another, that is better than her, be made queen in her place.
[20] And let this be published through all the provinces of thy empire, (which is very wide,) and let all wives, as well of the greater as of the lesser, give honour to their husbands.
Et hoc in omne ( quod latissimum est) provinciarum tuarum divulgetur imperium, et cunctae uxores, tam majorum quam minorum, deferant maritis suis honorem.
[21] His counsel pleased the king, and the princes: and the king did according to the counsel of Mamuchan.
Placuit consilium ejus regi, et principibus : fecitque rex juxta consilium Mamuchan,
[22] And he sent letters to all the provinces of his kingdom, as every nation could hear and read, in divers languages and characters, that the husbands should be rulers and masters in their houses: and that this should be published to every people.
et misit epistolas ad universas provincias regni sui, ut quaeque gens audire et legere poterat, diversis linguis et litteris, esse viros principes ac majores in domibus suis : et hoc per cunctos populos divulgari.
Commentary:
Ver. 1. In. Heb. "and in." In this manner the books of Scripture are usually connected. Sept. place first the dream of Mardochai. C. xi. 2. C. --- Assuerus. Sept. Artaxerxes; as C. xvi. 1. The former is the title of Median, the latter of the Persian, monarchs. This king reigned over both nations, and was most probably Darius Hystaspes, the third king of the Persians, (T.) who subdued India, &c. Herod. C. T. --- Some understand Cambyses, (1 Esd. iv. Genebrard) or Xerxes (Scalig.) or Artaxerxes Longimanus, (Bellarm. Salien) or Memnon, (Euseb.) or Ochus. Serarius. --- But (C.) the author of 3 Esd. iii. 1. and iv. 43. seems clearly declared for Hystaspes. T. --- Though that work be not canonical, (D.) it may claim some authority, as an ancient history. H. --- This king gave orders for the building of the temple. 1 Esd. vi. 1. 14. --- India. Part had been (C.) subject to Xerxes. Herod. iv. 44. --- Ethiopia, beyond Egypt, paid an acknowledgment. Cambyses had taken possession of this country. C. --- Some understand a part of Arabia to be meant. D. --- Seven: 120 had been regulated by Darius, the Mede. Dan. vi. 1. H. --- The number might vary as the monarch chose. D. --- Herodotus (iii. 89.) only specifies "twenty." But he speaks of large departments, to which he intimates that several others were subordinate. C. --- Provinces. Heb. medina, "seat of judges." H. --- Prefecture. M.
Ver. 2. Captial. Heb. "palace, (Prot. H.) or castle," (C.) may also signify "a capital." Mont. &c. --- Hystaspes founded this ancient royal city of Persia, (Pliny vi. 27.) or he greatly embellished it. C. Ælian, Anim. xiii. 18. T. --- He seems to have resided here almost constantly. The preceding kings (C.) spent the winter in this warm climate, and perhaps the spring. See 2 Esd. i. 1. They spent other parts of the year at Ecbatana and at Babylon. C.
Ver. 3. Reign. When he was solemnly crowned, again, (T.) or removed his court, (C.) and dedicated this new capital, with feasting, &c. H.
Ver. 4. Days, or a full half year, according to their reckoning. Nabuchodonosor, after his victory over Arphaxad, (Judith i.) feasted 120 days; Dionysius of Syrachuse, 90; (Aristot.) Solomon seven; (3 K. viii. 63.) and David three; when he was recognized by all Israel. 1 Par. xii. 39. The Gaul, Ariamnes, gave a fest to all his countrymen for a whole year. Athen. iv. 13. --- The Roman emperors sometimes treated all the citizens of Rome, and Alexander did the like to 9000 of his chief officers for one day. But the magnificence of Assuerus surpasses all the rest. The Persians were famous on this account. --- Persicos odi, puer, apparatus. Hor. i. Ode 38. C.
Ver. 5. Expired, (Feuardent) or in the last week. M. C. --- King. The Persian monarchs delighted in agriculture. Cyrus the younger, planted trees at Sardis, and never ate till he had taken some exercise of this or of a military nature. Xenoph. Memor. Cicero Senect.
Ver. 6. Were. Prot. "where were," white, green, and blue hangings. --- Ivory. Heb. "silver." H. --- Beds, to lie down on at table; though sitting was formerly the fashion. Gen. xliii. 33. The other custom prevailed among the more luxurious nations, and was observed in our Saviour's time, each person reclining upon his left arm, and having his feet behind the next. T. --- These beds were made very low, in Persia; so that Alexander had one put under his feet, when he sat on the throne of Darius, as he was not so tall. Curt. v. 7. --- Their magnificence was surprising. Herod. ix. 81. C. --- Variety, in Mosaic work. T. --- They lay upon sheep skins. Chal. Sept. "and the beds (or coverlets) were transparent, with various flowers, and full-blown roses, all round." H.
Ver. 7. Vessels. When Lysanias had taken the camp of Mardonius, and beheld the rich vessels, he could not help expressing a surprise that people possessing such advantages, should come to molest the Lacedemonians, who lived so poorly. Herod. ix. 79.
Ver. 8. Neither. Heb. "and the drinking was according to the law." Gr. "was not according to the pre-established law;" (H.) as the usual custom was altered, on this occasion; and thus both may be accurate. The Persians had commonly a king of the feast, whose orders all were obliged to obey in drinking. Hor. i. Ode 4. Eccli. xxxii. 1. --- This was an occasion of quarrels, (S. Jer.) and of intoxication. Agesilaus followed the example of Assuerus. Darius, and Cyrus the younger, gloried in being able to drink much wine without being deranged. C.
             Reges dicuntur urgere culullis,
Et torquere mero, quem perspexisse laborant,
An sit amicitia dignus. Hor. ad Pison.
Among friends, these "absurd laws" wer laid aside.
             Siccat inequales calices conviva, solutus
Legibus insanis. Hor. ii. Sat. 6. C.
This may suggest to Christians, that they ought not to urge any to get drunk, (S. Aug. ser. 231. de Temp.) lest they should be condemned by the very heathens. W. --- Would, and thus prevent disorders as much as possible. Athen. x. 6.
Ver. 9. Vasthi. Sept. Astin. H. --- Serarius suspects she was the king's sister, or daughter, as such marriages were common in Persia. T. --- The name is not very different from that of Atossa, the daughter of Cyrus, who was married to Cambyses, Smerdis, and Darius; to the latter of whom she bore four children. Herod. iii. 68. and vii. 3. --- This prince had other wives, particularly Artistona, (C. our Hadossa, (H.) or Esther) whom he espoused a virgin, and love the most. Herodotus seems to confound her with Atossa. --- Dwell. Some Greek copies have "in her own palaces." Usher. --- It was proper for women to be more retired. M. --- The men feasted in the open air. H.
Ver. 10. Wine. From the king's excess, and the haughtiness of Vasthi, God took occasion to advance Esther, and to deliver his people. C. --- Mauman. Sept. "Aman." T. --- But the names vary. The Persians seem to have had a predilection for the number seven, v. 14. C. Gr. "the seven eunuchs, ministers (deacons) of Artaxerxes."
Ver. 11. Head. But without any other covering. Chal. Sulpitius entertained perhaps the same idea. Stulto rege consultior, pudens, virorum oculis spectaculum corporis præbere jussa, abnuit. H. --- Some Greek copies assert, very improbably, (C.) that she was sent for "to be crowned queen." --- Beautiful. "The Persian ladies were noted for beauty," (Ammian) insomuch that Alexander called them eye-sores, oculorum dolores. Curt. --- Only prostitutes appeared publicly at feasts. Macrob. vii. 1. S. Amb. de Elia. i. 15. --- In effect, Vasthi's refusal conformable to the laws of the country. Josephus. Plut. in Themist. --- Her offence consisted, therefore, rather in her haughty carriage or words. H. --- For the proposal was neither decent nor safe for the king, (Grot.) as the history of Candaules shews. Herod. i. Not. Var. in Sulp.
Ver. 12. Fury. This is the usual consequences of excess. W.
Ver. 13. According. Heb. "knew the times, (for so was the king's custom with those who knew law and judgment.) And the next," &c. H. --- These were the magi, more particularly versed in the constitutions of the country. The Persians commonly held their consultations over wine. Herod. i. 133. --- Sept. "and the king said to his friends, Thus has Astin spoken; do therefore, in this affair, law and judgment. Then came forth to him Arkesaios and Saresthaios, and Malesear, the princes of the Persians and Medes, men near the king, and who sat first after the king. H. --- The old Vulg. places Mardochæus first. These seven counsellors were perhaps styled the king's relations," (Brisson i. p. 171.) and administered justice; as even the kings referred their causes to them. Plut. Artax. &c.
Ver. 16. Mamuchan. Old Vulg. "Mardochæus." Yet the Jews say this was the infamous Aman; and one Greek copy has Bilgaios, (C.) and Arabo, "Mouchaios." C. iii. 1. and xii. 6. He was the youngest, but spoke first, as was sometimes the case.
Ver. 18. Wives. Gr. turannideV, "princesses, or female tyrants." --- Slight. Sept. "dare to slight their husbands. Wherefore if," &c. H. --- Just. Heb. "enough of contempt and indignation." This may be referred either to the king or to the women's husbands. The example will prove a source of continual quarrels. C. --- Brentius approves the decision of this parasite; though S. Amb. &c. think that the queen was justified by the laws, which the king had no right to infringe, to gratify his drunken humour, v. 10. Luther would also wrest this text in favour of adultery, p.ii. Devort. p. 177. W.
Ver. 19. Altered. This regarded the more solemn acts, signed by the counsellors. Dan. vi. 17. Grotius. - Some decrees were neglected or changed. C. viii. 9. 1 Esd. iv. 5. 21. and vi. 1. C.
Ver. 21. Counsel. It was very inconclusive; (M.) and even supposing the queen were guilty of some indiscretion, the punishment was too severe. M. Grotius, v. 11. H.

HEADCANON DUMP #7
a majority of these headcanons were written either pre or post volume three. so a lot of them have been debunked by canon info, but i wanted to save my speculations.
sixty one accommodate story about ren’s parents backing and participating in the oniyuri project. this is where they were planning to elope. you can still incorporate parts of the butterfly lovers in their story. because ren did not recognise oniyuri and has only heard of it, we can assume he’s never been there. this was just a plan that his parents discussed with him in secret. might have to spectate about ren possibly being from mistral. nora did not recognise the story. spectating about a kind of special grimm associated with this part of mistral. edit: looks like it was a nuckelavee edit: it is now after volume four, and a lot of the information has been rendered redundant. however: i. ren’s parent’s plans to elope to oniyuri has now been incorporated into his backstory. ii. they did invest a lot of time and money into the project, most of the money having come from what zhilan was saving.
sixty two include ren’s sensory abilities into the mana manipulation headcanon, about how he can sense not only his own but the aura of other individuals. seen in rwby volume four episode six: tipping point, able to sense danger in the form of tyrian approaching rnjr at incredible speeds. this kind of sensory ability was seen right before his fight with the king taijitus, all the way in volume one episode six: the emerald forest. but also write down your new headcanon involving his semblance having something to do with empathy, and his ability to sense auras, manipulating his own emotions as well as others, even at a distance. edit: ren’s semblance is solely empathy until that headcanon is also debunked.
sixty three the lunar cult, often referred to as ‶the lunar kingdom‶ is the source of a major religion practiced in the area of mistral surrounding kuroyuri, oniyuri, and shion. the cult itself protects a white haired witch with as of yet undeterminable powers, but the mountain in which they reside is considered haunted, forbidden, dangerous. there is no record of outsiders venturing in and coming out alive. the lunar religion celebrates the moon goddess, as well as the belief that human kind descended from the moon men. it’s effects on the surrounding region include grand festivals for the winter solstice to celebrate the longest night of the year. mistral is heavily in tune with nature, so referring to your sweetheart as some kind of natural element is common, ie. sky and sea, moon and stars.
sixty four prior to moving to kuroyuri ren lived in a compound with all the other members of the lie family, a network of beautiful traditional houses of both large and small stature, interconnected with bridges, walkways, gorgeous gardens, made of incredibly elaborate architecture. the property itself was miles long and covered a mountain range. the entrance of it was around a twenty minute walk from kuroyuri. when his family was attacked by bandits three years prior to the start of the series, a lot of the of compound burned down. lie cuifen (ren’s grandmother) who had previously not been very involved in the business transactions of their family, managed to reel in a lot of the investments they’d lost, and still remains incredibly wealthy to this day. ren’s mentor, feng (oc based on mushu lore), takes in students from time to time and trains them in the lie compound, which is being rebuilt. he has built a reputation of being an extremely selective but highly successful teacher, with all of his students passing their combat academy entrance exams with flying colours.
sixty five ren has good leadership qualifications, but his characteristics fall more into the ‘unwilling protagonist’ spectrum than anything noteworthy. i’m not that deluded in my admiration to currently admit that ren and nora’s roles in the show are anything more than minimal (ren’s background story functions more as a case study than anything else). this is more of a conclusion i’ve come to when speculating on traits commonly shown in mulan’s case. not necessarily in disney’s mulan, but most other versions of the story including the original ballad, she does end up assuming a commander’s position in the army after a few years of dedication. ren is shown to have an adaptive and versatile fighting style, using the elements around him in order to gain the advantage (this has even extended to using other character’s weapons as of volume four.) he’s also incredibly observant, so there isn’t any reason he wouldn’t be able to use another character’s abilities to further their lead. he’s good with organisation, tactics, strategy, and also has a strong sense of duty. he has very good instincts; holding jaune back from fighting tyrian, understanding the right time to strike, knowing what they need to do in order to survive. what i believe makes him a better follower than a leader in his team’s case is linked to his personality. ren is not personable, and the way he comes across in the beginning makes it seem like he views others more as tools than people. he does care for his teammates, but his instinct is to protect himself first, to survive. he works better on his own. he can follow orders to a t, and oftentimes needs instructions to function so he is at his most useful as a subordinate under someone he trusts.
sixty six ren is hypocritical. mostly he is live, and let live, but he will chastise those close to him about taking care of themselves and not getting hurt, but he will indulge in some of the most self destructive behaviour like alientating himself and smoking. during beacon days he constantly nagged nora and jaune about being healthy but he was constantly drinking soda, coffee, and energy drinks to keep himself awake. when he is a professional huntsman, while he understands that getting hurt is inevitable, he will ask his loved ones to put themselves above his own welfare, and then go behind their backs and sacrifice himself if he can. it’s honestly infuriating.
sixty seven ren’s noticeable improvement with physical affection was, of course, largely due to beacon’s influence. my characterisation has a lot of his personable attributes increase because of his interactions at beacon. my ren’s personal space issues are rooted deeply in the symbolism of connection. he is deathly afraid of someone getting close enough to him to hurt him when they betray him or when they inevitably leave, even if it’s through no fault of their own. surrendering to his occasional want to be touched means that he is building up some kind of relationship and he’s deathly afraid of that. he also just doesn’t like being touched unless absolutely necessary; he likes being aware about what people around him are doing, and being touched by people he doesn’t want to brings up memories he’d rather not bring up again. throughout the entirety of beacon ren has show distain for being touched, in the show and in rwby chibi as well. any light hearted pounce he’s seen to be visibly shocked by ( although i have noticed that the two times jaune’s touched him, ren has responded appropriately and in kind. the only other person he’s reacted to similarly was nora. ) if ren initiates physical touch with you, it means that he’s either treating some kind of wound for you, or you’re special to him. he touches mostly out of habit, and to reassure himself that you’re actually real.
sixty eight some characterisation notes that run alongside ren’s association with he chinese folklore god nezha are, firstly that nezha is a protection deity. ren is a huntsman, and it is inherently coded into their profession to protect those who cannot protect themselves. parts of the lore that are applicable to ren are some familiar thematics, which i can only guess were taken into consideration when ren was made ( just from the wind and fire blades thing ? that just seems like a big coincidence that wind and fire disks are nezha’s preferred weapon and ren’s preferred dust cartridges. ) there’s also the the theme that ren had to grow up far too quickly, while nezha was born into a fully grown boy already, then forced to wage war. the storms left in the wake of nezha’s sacrifice i associate with li’s sacrifice in kuroyuri, some of those being metaphorical and remaining in ren’s mind. then there is the continuous resurgence of being reborn, rebirth, reincarnation through the lotus themes, which appear repeatedly through my characterisation.
sixty nine it’s sort of a given why now, but ren hates horses. he hates the sound they make, and he hates anything similar to the nightmarish screams of the nuckelavee. hearing sound effects similar used to induce a state of panic but now only serves to trigger an extremely bad mood which won’t disperse for the rest of the day.
seventy i was thinking about ren’s capability to do single handstand pushups in chibi. basically all the feats that ren was capable of in rwby chibi, episode nine: “ren plays tag”. i couldn’t help but remember that he performed a similar movement in the season finale of volume four. in my other extended combat analysis of ren’s fighting style all evidence i gathered alluded to his legs being stronger, after all, ren’s agility has always been impeccable: he is seen to be able to reach incredibly high tree tops on single jumps alone, jumps that ruby and nora needed mechanised assistance to reach. but i neglected to talk about ren’s arm strength. ren utilises palm strikes, in grimm eclipse in succession, when attacking which is said to produce more energy than a regular punch with far less injury to the striker’s hand. the shock absorption required when this attack is being amplified with raw aura ( enough raw aura to burst open a king taijitu’s head ) must be immense. his main striking force when it comes to his regular slashing style also relies on the speed and strength of blade control, especially considering he does the most damage with the blades ( and very minimal damage with his bullets. ) there’s also the fact that he held back the taitiju’s fangs with his arms, the force field generated by aura would have helped when it came to stopping the fangs from sinking into him, but that he wasn’t blown away by a two tonne snake was also impressive. he held back the snake for a significant amount of time too, almost seven seconds on screen, possibly longer. i do know that he’s not getting fuckin’ k.o.’d during fights anymore, so he’s definitely gotten stronger, which is what i’m all about. okay, but that elegant flip thing he did at the beginning of volume four, chapter twelve: no safe haven is everything. not only was it a perfectly executed one handed handstand with a spiral flip, but he did it while armed as well. this boy is incredible. that kind of movement requires a lot of strength, and i’m finding that that’s just ren’s style, it’s flamboyant and beautiful, a lot of grace in power. i can’t even remember if there was a point to this hc anymore, i just wanted to talk about how some things in chibi are being alluded to in the show. and also there were a bunch of cretinous annoyances prior to volume three speaking about how weak ren is, and let me tell you, training next to him would give you so many confidence issues man. this boy is strong. not only that but his fighting prowess is spread out in multiple different ways. he has one of the most diverse fighting styles in rwby so shut the fuck up.

Above you can see two of the sentient species in Cavaliers of Mars, illustrated in lovely b&w line-art by the multi-styled talent of Andrew Trabbold. That was a decision we made a couple of years ago, actually: to have all the interior art in Cavs by rendered line-art. The style works just right as it references both the old pulp-era illustrations and the early art in the tabletop RPG hobby.
Is going black and white line-art going to alienate current day gamers who are used to and demand full-color interior art? Well, it probably does limit the appeal of Cavaliers of Mars in terms of a more broad-based audience, but we knew that would happen with this sort of game anyway.
When Rose and I first started throwing ideas at each other the Gen Con after she pitched me the “canals/Venice” line, as explained last week, we were kind of brainstorming, kind of riffing off each others’ ideas. It became clear to me as the ideas started clicking together organically, that Rose had a very specific vision that she wanted to give full reign to rather than holding back for “business” reasons.
In fact, the label “Fantasy Heartbreaker” was mentioned pretty early in our discussions as a point of pride. (Note Rose’s Patreon page.)
For me, I tend to think of games like Cavs as beautiful jewel-boxes where every design decision is made to reinforce the overall feel and themes of the game. The world, the rules, the system, the visuals – all given consideration as an intrinsic piece of the whole.
This was a huge part of the appeal to me for publishing Cavaliers of Mars. If you look at Scion or the Trinity Continuum, they are designed to enable a lot of access points and ways to play, with built-in ways we can further expand the game to appeal to more people. (WoD, CofD, and Exalted, are also designed to “go big”). I like that Onyx Path can publish Cavs, apply our high production values as always, and help Rose create the focused game she imagined.
As we have done before, you can check out whether that approach to Cavaliers of Mars works for you by reading the KS page and the ongoing Updates, or by backing the project and you can read the complete text via a link in Backer Update #1.

Besides discovering our jewel-box of a game, backers of the Cavaliers of Mars Kickstarter also discovered the newest member of the Onyx Path team in the person of our Kickstarter runner, Jammin’ James Bell, when they read their first Update. James will gradually be taking on more and more of the extremely varied responsibilities of running our Kickstarters – which is a huge weight off my shoulders and greatly appreciated!
Since James is entirely focused on our Kickstarters, we’re looking forward to his many years of customer service and business management experience to really pay off for our backers.
Hiring on James was one of the awesome things to come out of GenCon this year, much as with bringing Fast Eddy Webb on full-time as announced last month. I was really busy finalizing a lot of ideas for improving Onyx that we had been putting together all through the year, and we have a bunch more of them to reveal in the months to come.
Now, this announcement didn’t really come out of GenCon, but Steve Wieck and I did discuss a bit what was the best way to handle the Scarred Lands game-line with the passing of Stew Wieck. It was after the con that I tendered an offer to purchase Nocturnal Media‘s half of the rights, and last week that offer was accepted. Onyx Path now owns Scarred Lands outright, and we are all absolutely thrilled to be able to continue to create new projects for one of the very best settings to come out of the d20 days.
Onyx and Nocturnal are still linked together to fulfill the SL Kickstarter, but after that is all achieved, we’ll be moving forward into the Scarred Lands based on the plans I was developing with Stew, but on our own.

Finally, I just wanted to shout out to Mighty Matt McElroy, who flew out at the last minute to the studios of Geek & Sundry last Friday to join a taping of their One Night Only show focused on tabletop game publishing. Matt represented for Onyx Path, together with a panel of fellow game creators, and he says the whole thing was absolutely polished and fascinating. I understand you can find the show on their ProjectAlpha site with a 30 day free trial: http://ift.tt/2fBHzlF
If you check it out, let us know what you think and we’ll pass your feedback on to the Geek & Sundry folks!

Twenty years ago, White Wolf published Changeling: the Dreaming, the fifth of their promised five game-lines that together comprised the World of Darkness. Seen by some as a lighter, more fantasy-based setting in the modern-day, and by others as the darkest game White Wolf had yet created, players had to face the question of what happens once creativity and magic fades from their world.
This 20th Anniversary Edition of Changeling: the Dreaming returns to that deceptively bright yet terrifying world and both compiles and completes the concepts of the previous two editions. Led by veteran White Wolf and Onyx Path developer “Blackhat” Matt McFarland, our writing team consists of longtime Changeling creators like Ian Lemke, Jackie Cassada, Nicky Rea, and Peter Woodworth, as well as familiar names such as John Snead, Maggie Carrol, Matthew Dawkins, and Krister Michl. One and all are dedicated to making Changeling: the Dreaming Twentieth Anniversary Edition the most playable edition yet – while not losing the wonder, awe, and majesty that Changeling is known for.
A revised and up to date look at the World of Darkness through the eyes of the Kithain – what has happened to the Dreaming in the last 20 years, and what is the state of Glamour and dreams?
Rules for all of the kiths including in 2nd ed, plus fan favorites from other books: selkies, piskies, clurichaun, and both Arcadian and Concordian sidhe.
Rules for the Gallain: The inanimae, the hsien, the Nunnehi, and others!
An overhauled and reimagined system for fae magic, including new Arts and the powerful but dangerous practice of Unleashing!
New full-color beautiful artwork as well as classic Changeling illustrations including remastered full page pieces of the kiths by Tony Diterlizzi.

From the massive Chronicles of Darkness: Dark Eras main book, we have pulled this single chapter, Dark Eras: After the Fall (Demon: The Descent Constantinople 1453-1458). The Ottoman conquest shatters Constantinople…and also the God-Machine’s grip on it. Unchained flock from all over the world to seek their fortunes in rebuilding the city. But is the Machine really gone, and if it is, can the Unchained face the horrors it drove into the shadows?

From the massive Chronicles of Darkness: Dark Eras main book, we have pulled this single chapter, Dark Eras: A Grimm Dark Era (Changeling: The Lost Grimm’s Tales). With the publication of Grimm’s Fairy Tales, the Lost find themselves subject to the strength of stories, to a degree never before seen. As numerous stories reach greater audiences, the power of tales redefine what it means to be a changeling. Here, we explore a shift in the veil between fiction and reality, and find changelings who escaped by embracing the odd rules of the fantastic.

Week 10 - Testing Different Ideas
During this week I decided to try out a couple of concept ideas to help improve the appearance of this video, one of the main ideas I had wanted to try was converting my video to 60fps to slow it down and create extra smooth footage. To achieve this I followed this YouTube Tutorial.
youtube
FIG ONE HUNDRED TWENTY SEVEN
I started by importing all of the clips I wanted to use into Premiere Pro and then using the Speed/Duration option I slowed my video down to 50%, and made the Time Interpolation to Optical Flow.
Tumblr media
FIG ONE HUNDRED TWENTY EIGHT
The next thing I had to do was go to Sequence and Render Effects In to Out, this is what helped change my video from 25fps footage to 60fps. Though without changing the frame rate of the actual sequence, when playing this footage back it simply looks as though it has been slowed down.
Tumblr media
FIG ONE HUNDRED TWENTY NINE
While this looked okay I wanted to see how the overall video would look as 60fps, as I mentioned briefly before all I had to do was change the frame rate of the sequence. This created the smooth footage I had envisioned.
Tumblr media
FIG ONE HUNDRED THIRTY
Here is the rendered version of this.
youtube
FIG ONE HUNDRED THIRTY ONE
When I was preparing the assets for my video I found a few different coffee shop sound effects, ranging from people having conversations to the machines making noise in the background. Originally I wanted to use this to bring more dimension to my video as I wasn’t planning on recording any voice overs, but when trying to fit these audios with my video it didn’t have quite the effect I imagined.
In Premiere Pro I had all of my footage in the one sequence, with both the song I had chosen and the coffee shop sound effects. I began adjusting the volume of the two pieces of audio trying to help them compliment and work smoothly with one another, but it didn’t matter what I did the two pieces of audio simply didn’t work well together.
As this happened I felt as though I was going to need to do something else with my video to bring more dimensions to it, one of my ways to do this is by including kinetic typography and also transitions which will be a huge part of my video flowing a lot smoother.
To do this I started by practising with my typography and deciding exactly how I wanted to use it in my video. Rather than have the random pieces of text appearing throughout my video, I decided to use my text as the closing part of my video featuring the name, address and phone number. In doing kinetic typography it gives me the opportunity to incorporate Aroma’s colour scheme that can be seen in all of their branding, which consists of brown and beige.
Tumblr media
FIG ONE HUNDRED THIRTY TWO
I wanted to keep the animation quite simplistic, with enough animation to create the idea of dimension but not too much that it’s overwhelming. I achieved this by following this YouTube tutorial.
youtube
FIG ONE HUNDRED THIRTY THREE
As this is essentially Kinetic Typography I used After Effects rather than Premiere Pro, to begin I created a new composition and added a new solid layer with the background being Aroma’s favoured colour of brown.
Tumblr media
FIG ONE HUNDRED THIRTY FOUR
I then began to create my separate text layers, I wanted ‘Aroma Coffee House’ to be the largest piece of text so it catches your eye first with the secondary pieces of text being slightly smaller resulting in them being read second. As for the colour of the text, I made it a warm beige colour which I also took from Aroma’s logo. After placing my pieces of text I adjusted the timing and length of them, while I had them all end at the same point I made sure there was a slight variation in when they begin. At this point fonts weren’t too much of a worry and I mostly concentrated on the animation of the typography.
Tumblr media
   FIG ONE HUNDRED THIRTY FIVE
The next step for me was to begin key framing what attributes I wanted to animate and whether or not I would keep the same animation for all or create a slight difference between them.
Watching the tutorial helped me decide exactly how I wanted my text to be animated, for the title I clicked animate and chose Position and Scale from the Expression Selector. While I left the scale at 0.0, 0.0%, I adjusted the position slightly by changing it to 0.0, 50.0.
Tumblr media
FIG ONE HUNDRED THIRTY SIX
Then from the animator after choosing my two properties, I chose my selector which was expression. In reference to the tutorial I took the animation/expression that the person behind the tutorial supplied, and pasted it into the expression amount. Just from doing this the animation of this text began to come together.
Tumblr media
FIG ONE HUNDRED THIRTY SEVEN
Tumblr media
FIG ONE HUNDRED THIRTY EIGHT
With this done I moved on and began animating my secondary text, like I’d done before I animated both the Position and Scale via the Expression Selector. I made sure to repeat the exact same settings I’d already used, but I made a slight change by adding rotation of around 30% which helped create the desired look, without it looking too much. In doing this I was bringing something more to my text, while also creating an apparent divide between the title and secondary text.
Tumblr media
FIG ONE HUNDRED THIRTY NINE
Tumblr media
FIG ONE HUNDRED FORTY
As the animation portion of my text was done, I was able to move on to choosing the font which I felt would work best with my video. While doing this I made sure that motion blur was turned on for my clips, to make the flow of the animation so much smoother. For the fonts I knew I wanted to use one that had multiple weights, which would make it easier for me to showcase hierarchy. The one I decided to choose is called Ashley and comes in fifteen different weights, I decided to use ‘Bold’ for the title and ‘Semibold Italic’.
Tumblr media
FIG ONE HUNDRED FORTY ONE
This is how my kinetic typography looks, paired with the audio that will be playing at the end of my video.
youtube
FIG ONE HUNDRED FORTY TWO
The next thing I moved on to practising was my transitions, I felt doing this was a key part of my video process and it would give me a much better idea of what one’s will work. I decided to start out with a simple zooming transition, as I had planned to have one at the very beginning to help reign you into the video. Just like the kinetic typography I also did this After Effects.
To start I created a new composition, with a few clips from the rough edit of my video making sure the audio was included to keep transitions in time. I the trimmed the clips as I saw fit and added the effect Motion Tile to them with these settings, this will help improve the look of the transition in the long run.
Tumblr media
FIG ONE HUNDRED FORTY THREE
Once this was done I created an Adjustment Layer and added the effect Transform to it, in doing this I will be able to adjust the position, scale and rotation of these two clips at the same time. This transition incorporated scale, so I used the stopwatch and created a key frame near the beginning, two in the middle and one near the end.
Tumblr media
FIG ONE HUNDRED FORTY FOUR
As I wanted this transition to zoom out I changed the scale of the second frame to 90, and set the third to 110, making sure to leave the one at the beginning and end at 100.
Tumblr media
FIG ONE HUNDRED FORTY FIVE
With the key frames organised I selected all four of them and Easy Eased them, to lessen the stuttered transition. Though to really create the smooth it out I adjusted the key frames in the graph editor until I was happy with the playback.
Tumblr media
FIG ONE HUNDRED FORTY SIX
Tumblr media
FIG ONE HUNDRED FORTY SEVEN
In my final video I will be using light leaks to create a modern effect, which can often be seen in many promo videos for different businesses. So while practising my transitions I decided to also try out one of my light leaks to see how it works with my footage, using it was easy enough and all I had to do was bring my clip of choice into After Effects and trim it down. With this done I changed the blend mode to ‘screen’ which created the vision I had imagined, and then to help the light leak appear gradually I key framed the opacity until I was happy with how it looked.
Tumblr media
FIG ONE HUNDRED FORTY EIGHT
Here is how this transition turned out.
youtube
FIG ONE HUNDRED FORTY NINE
While I plan to use mostly zoom in and zoom out transitions for my video I wanted to have at least one slide transition to help break things up. To make it I essentially followed the same steps of adding motion tile to the clips, creating an adjustment layer with the transform effect and making sure motion blur was switched on. The only difference was that rather than key framing scale, I was key framing the position.
To create the slide transition I started by slightly moving my first clip to the right as I wanted it to be subtle, and then for the second clip I moved it the same amount but in the opposite direction.
Tumblr media
FIG ONE HUNDRED FIFTY
Tumblr media
FIG ONE HUNDRED FIFTY ONE
Just as I had before, I selected all of the necessary frames and easy eased them to make the transition smoother. Then in the graph editor I adjusted the key frames further until they were at a similar formation to those of the previous transition, this helped keep a sense of consistency.
Tumblr media
FIG ONE HUNDRED FIFTY TWO
Tumblr media
FIG ONE HUNDRED FIFTY THREE
This is how the slide transition turned out.

Update: 28 March, 2019
Hi guys. Kai here. As you may or may not know, I have taken over the Spectrum Zine from the original mod, Ali. And honestly? It has been A Fucking Process. I’ve enlisted the help of a few trusted people, including Ardett helping me out with social media, and we are at a point where we are able to enter the final stages of this project and we’re asking for your continued patience and cooperation so we can finish out the project, get you your orders, and make our donation to True Colors.
Okay so the update as it currently stands is:
I got handed a clusterfuck of a zine in dribs and drabs by Ali. Despite repeated requests, I did not receive all the information I asked for. I have still not received much of that information.
Yeah, no, after S8 dropped, I couldn’t look at Voltron without feeling sick for about a month, I’ll be honest about that. And no, that’s not a ship thing. I could give a shit about what ships are or aren’t canon. I mean the characterizations and the million and one ways they abandoned everything they’d built for seven seasons. But I got back into it and I’m not going to abandon a fandom I love because of a silly little thing like Canon Sucking. Since then, I’ve been back to working on this project.
Apparently, the original tumblr page for the zine is gone. I did not do this. I have NEVER had access to this tumblr page. It must have been something Ali, the original project runner, did. I literally even didn't know Ali had nuked the tumblr page until very recently. Ali hasn't spoken to me in months and our last contact was me attempting to get the passwords from them yet again with yet another empty promise.
That said, I have officially GUESSED my way into the twitter account, changed the password, and removed Ali from the recovery info so I have THAT now, at least, as well as the original yahoo email account. I'm going to be posting there starting March 16th.
I did NOT at any point have access to the tumblr page. I have NO idea if anyone sent messages to that page, I have NO way to find that out. (I can only assume any frustrated messages were sent there. Only two people asked about the status of the zine via Twitter.)
Not sure who follows my main but life kind of exploded for me (repeatedly) and I was briefly homeless (again) in January and then was living in a hotel. That said, now everything is settled and our house is continuing in the repair process. We finally got our flood insurance payout from fucking 2012, yayyyy!!
I just got back from Australia for an anniversary trip my girlfriend planned and paid to have me flown to the other side of the planet for.
In regards to my other activities unrelated to the zine, please don’t hassle me about posting a few fics that took me a handful of hours. That's what I do in my sparing PERSONAL time and I have been told EXPLICITLY to continue to do that by my therapist, thank you. I feel plenty of nausea, guilt, and fear every time I post a fic when I have a project outstanding like this but I have been told to not stop doing it. I have posted a grand total of 15,736 recreational words over the last 3.5 months, AKA roughly 15 hours recreational writing time total over the last 3.5 months, AKA an average of 150 words per day broken over the last 100 days. And, again, I’m told to do it by my therapist.
I’d like to share with you guys how much time has been invested in this project:
I've literally been working on this SOLO in terms of formatting.
It took repeated hasslings of Ali to get most of the project pieces.
Once I finally gained access to the email account, I had to download each and every fic and art piece individually. Most of them were not attributed correctly. Almost nobody indicated which pieces were meant to be printed and which pieces were meant to be PDF-only.
Fics:
About half of the fics had to be honestly ripped apart to their bones just to fix and render uniform and readable the formatting because they were submitted as PDFs (note to authors, submit doc files) or with very weird spacing. I’ve seen how AWFUL zines can look when all the fics are haphazard formatting and spacing and it’s not something that anyone ever likes to receive or to see their work as part of.
Several of these fics don’t even have titles (note to authors: please name your fics).
More recently, I recruited my very damn patient girlfriend (who literally bought one of these things) to help me with the fic formatting issue. She has helped me wade through 40,000 words for both formatting and LIGHT beta editing.
40,000 words of fic are in this project. That is literally the length of a damn novel. This is a fucking BOOK.
Editors, professional editors, take MONTHS to go through the edits on something of this length, and that’s when those manuscripts ARE submitted at something vaguely resembling a uniform format. This project… is not. Aphelion utilized an entire team of writers to edit, format, and beta, and it still took several weeks. I was one of those people.
Not  to  call  anyone  out,  but  one  fic  literally  had  double  or  triple  spaces  between  every  WORD,  not  every  sentence,  every  single  word,  like   this.  It  was  4,000  spaces.  Why?  W h y. There were    still additional   spaces  that had to   be removed BY HAND. (Spacing here is intentional to make a point.)
Every fic also had to be read to check whether it was a SFW or NSFW piece because nobody actually marked their work. If a NSFW piece accidentally got dropped into the SFW zine version, that could be a big fucking problem.
Art:
I had to track down a copy of SAI to get those files converted that were submitted as SAI.
My photoshop corrupted itself so I spent about eight hours scrubbing it off my system and getting it back on.
The art pieces were submitted at TWENTY different dimensions, Only six art pieces were submitted at the advertised 5.5” x 8.5” dimensions of the zine at 300dpi. Another handful were submitted at the right ratio but just the wrong size.
Like, I get it, the submission guidelines were shaky at best but I’m the one who’s been trying to wade through all of this to get it uniform.
This has been a LARGE number of hours investment.
Contributor Updates:
The credits doc was sent out to contributors. They have until 02 April, 2019 at 11:59PM EST to submit any corrections to their credits.
I apologize for the radio silence, but the project Ali landed on me was a god damned CLUSTERFUCK and I have been doing a lot of work on the back end trying to pull this out of the flaming dumpster they tossed it in because I believed in the project, especially in light of everything that has happened in the fandom and it has given me nothing but stress. But I really wanted this zine in my physical hands. I still do. More updates on that below.
So as of some time in the last few weeks, Ali has quite honestly cut and run. It looks like they nuked their instagram, nuked their tumblr (hence the zine tumblr disappearing bc they were the only mod on it), and nuked their twitter, and left me holding the bag on this shit. BUT GUESS WHAT, I’M STILL HERE.
Also, in case y’all were wondering about Ali’s Voltron Calendar project? I literally have one. It’s on my wall. They gave it to me in August when I was in Florida for a con and they promised me to my face that they would get me the information I needed for Spectrum. It was just one of the many times they promised to get me the things I needed and that one was to my face. So to anyone who never got their calendar? They had some number of them printed and then never did anything with them which is somehow worse. I don’t know how many they had printed but I literally have one of these forbidden calendars and they told me they were going to start shipping that week which obviously never happened. So that kind of shows Ali’s follow-through.
It is PAINFULLY obvious that Ali never ran a zine before Spectrum due to a NUMBER of points: Lack of organization, lack of consistent formatting, horrible method for final submissions, underpriced zine and bundle pricing, underpriced shipping pricing (even before the pricing hike), contributor count, contributor discount amount given the zine size, writer max word counts, merch quantity per bundle. Literally, we had two people submit final charm designs when we only have one charm listed on the damned bundle so that’s cool.
I couldn’t even tell how BIG the zine was going to be until many, MANY hours were invested into this project. First, there was the countless hours spent downloading one piece at a time and wading through back and forth emails and trying to make sure no one’s submissions got lost which meant basically going through every piece of correspondence individually. Then, there was cross referencing all of that against the emails and the contributor names. Then, it took getting all of the fic into one file and hours upon hours of wading through and formatting and reformatting and recruiting my girlfriend to help to even get to the point where we could see what final page count we were looking at for fic. Then, there was figuring out how long of an index a project with this many contributors would need and how many pages that would take.
I have reached out to several manufacturers regarding zine and merch pricing and what we can do to get those affordably done. This zine is VERY FUCKING THICK and I AM concerned about pricing, for both the printed zine and for merch. If anyone has any affordable manufacturers you have worked with before, I would be happy to hear from you!
Currently, here’s where we stand:
My investment:
Too Fucking Much Time
A few years off my life
A bucket of tears
I think I’m going to follow in Shiro’s white-haired footsteps from this
Seriously, do I have more wrinkles? I can’t tell.
A lot of love.
Orders:
There are 79 total orders
There are 06 PDF-only orders
There are 18 Print+PDF orders
There are 55 Merch+Print+PDF orders
There have been 5 refunds issued
Contributors make up 28 orders.
Non-contributors make up 51 orders.
Content:
The fics total out to 43,000 words. That's a fucking lot. That's over a hundred pages of FIC, before the artists.
There are 50 pages of art.
The zine is currently 126 pages. I’m fucking with formatting to try to shrink it. That's a big, thick, HEAVY fucking book.Yes, some of this is PDF-only and I am still in the process of tracking down which is which, but it is still a large book.
Finances:
The zine was priced at $7.50 for those who used contributor codes.
The cheapest print edition I can source for the zine currently because of the page count is roughly $7.50 per zine. This is why I am SEEKING SUPPLIERS who can bring in a lesser quote for an 8.5 x 5.5 126 page zine.
If the zine costs $7.50/per to print and contributors paid $7.50/per, this means EVERY contributor copy is an AT-COST copy. Not to mention shipping.
The bundle was priced at $13.50 for those who used contributor codes. This has to include the $7.50 zine. That leaves $6.50 for the bundle merch which I have currently priced around $9. That means $2.50 of every contributor bundle has to come from the zine budget.
International shipping was priced at $7.00 for the zine-only and $12.00 for the bundle. This may be feasible for zine-only orders but bundles will need a shipping supplement to come from somewhere.
At this time, I am proposing:
Creators have until 02 April, 2019 to update credits.
A rough final draft will be released to creators by 8 April, 2019.
Any major corrections to works will be submitted by 14 April, 2019.
Then I move on to handling the orders. For which I propose the following first steps:
Everyone who ordered a copy will receive the PDF edition of Spectrum on or about 28 April, 2019. Refunds will NOT be given for that first $10 per order that is the PDF price so that we can actually manage to donate SOME fucking money for how much work has been put into this zine and to make sure we can pay the print costs for those persons who want a physical copy.
As a Thank You for your patience, everyone who ordered (and contributors) will also receive a bonus mini-PDF of additional zine-exclusive content not posted anywhere else (SFW or NSFW version, to match the order).
Assuming none of the item productions are cost prohibitive, the following will be how the physical portion of the project is handled:
USA people who ordered Print+PDF will receive their PDF and be given the option of:
Option USPrint1 (Default option): Receipt of their printed zine as planned at no additional cost. Customers will have TWO WEEKS from the date of the PDF-containing email to update any addresses as needed.
Option USPrint2: Donation of the additional funds beyond the PDF price ($5.00 print + $5.00 shipping). Again, customers will have 2 WEEKS to select this option via email.
Option USPrint3: Refund of the additional funds beyond the PDF price ($10.00 minus any applicable PayPal fees). Again, customers will have 2 WEEKS to select this option via email.
International people who ordered Print+PDF will receive their PDF and be given the option of:
Option IntPrint1 (Default option): Donation of the additional funds beyond the PDF price ($5.00 print + $7.00 shipping = $12.00). Customers will have FOUR WEEKS from the date of the PDF-containing email to select a different option.
Option IntPrint2: Payment of an international shipping supplement (est $10.00) and receipt of their print zine as planned. Again, customers will have 4 WEEKS to select this option via email.
Option IntPrint3: Refund of the additional funds beyond the PDF price ($12.00 minus any applicable PayPal fees). Again, customers will have 4 WEEKS to select this option via email.
USA people who ordered Merch+Print+PDF will receive their PDF and be given the option of:
Option USBun1 (Default Option): Receipt of their bundle as planned at no additional cost. Customers will have TWO WEEKS from the date of the PDF-containing email to update any addresses as needed.
Option USBun2: Donation of the additional funds beyond the PDF price ($17.00 bundle + $7.00 shipping). Again, customers will have 2 WEEKS to select this option via email.
Option USBun4: Refund of the additional funds beyond the PDF price ($10.00 minus any applicable PayPal fees). Again, customers will have 2 WEEKS to select this option via email.
International people who ordered Merch+Print+PDF will receive their PDF and be given the option of:
Option IntBun1 (Default Option): Donation of the additional funds beyond the PDF price ($17.00 bundle + $12.00 shipping = $29.00). Customers will have FOUR WEEKS from the date of the PDF-containing email to select a different option.
Option IntBun2: Payment of an international shipping supplement (est $10.00) and receipt of their bundle as planned. Again, customers will have 4 WEEKS to select this option via email.
Option IntBun3: Refund of the additional funds beyond the PDF price ($29.00 minus any applicable PayPal fees). Again, customers will have 4 WEEKS to select this option via email.
By following this plan, I hope we can maximize the number of people who can select an option they can be happy with!
If production or shipping of any of this proves to be cost prohibitive once final quotes are in place, options will be adjusted accordingly.
If y’all have any questions please feel free to message either the tumblr or twitter.
Thank you for all your time and continued patience. We look forward to bringing this project to completion.

Pitch:
For our project we have to create a pitch to present our main ideas and initial research on the project to our lecturers. To then hopefully talk about/develop my ideas. Here’s my pitch and some of the work which went into it:
Tumblr media
Intro Slide - Slide One
Tumblr media
Slide Two - Text: After we were given the brief I decided that I wanted to do something futuristic looking. Also bring in realism to the idea, adding as much as I can to a shot to be subtle. I really enjoyed the first tracking project and I had many ideas of which I wanted to develop on for this version of the project. I am excited to develop the concepts and ideas of which this project will create as I want to push myself outside of my current comfort zone and try to do something which will really stand out. I think I will defo use the subtle technique and have smaller details as this is something which I love seeing in films. Here are some of the things I think I want to look at in this presentation:
Research into some styles.
A couple of test shots.
Create a basic plan for the video (inc. storyboard, shot list, equipment, etc.)
Tumblr media
Slide Three Text: Rough plan of Action timetable; Speaker Notes: Here’s a rough timetable I made for this project, last week obviously I worked on this pitch and came up with my ideas. This included test shots and a basic plan for the rest of the project. For week two of the project I basically am planning on obviously giving this pitch, booking out my equipment for the right day and also the green screen room. I also plan on doing a lot of test shots/planning the shoot. Once all that is booked for week 3/the end of week 2 I would shoot my project and also if needed plan some re-shoots. This is why I’ve given a week for shooting just in case.  Then for the final two weeks of the project I’ll work on the shots getting constant feedback from various people whom I usually speak to about my project.
Tumblr media
Slide Four - Text:
Add the element of camera motion to the image enabling you to bring previous VFX competencies into a more realistic and professional context.
Insist the importance of creating efficient and minimum data for the project at hand, always mindful of the pipeline and deadline they are working within
Understand the difference between object tracking and camera tracking.
They appreciate the inherent limitations within the properties of data and imagery they have generated.
Can extract motion data professionally across a range of film players. They have generated successful renders of text geometry that conform to motion within a shot.
They value and gage the prerequisites needed for an efficient pipeline. They appreciated the inherent limitations within the properties of data and imagery they have generated.
Speaker Notes: While planning I decided I need to re-visit the the objectives of which we were given for the brief. These are important for a successful project so I pinned the objectives and learning outcomes to 6 points. Anyway. Back to the initial project!
Tumblr media
Slide Five - Text:
Glass: Here’s the work I did with tracking one. I really enjoyed it and enjoyed creating GUI and a more futuristic video and I think that this is something of which I want to work on in tracking 2 but more in depth.
Black Mirror: For my work one thing of which was a massive inspiration, was Black Mirror. Specifically season 3 (nosedive). So when I go to develop my tracking two idea I will re-visit this and possibly develop my ideas of which I came up for this.
Speaker Notes: So when developing my ideas for this project as I’ve said I feel strongly about possibly creating something similar to my tracking 1 project. For my previous project I really liked the colour grading I did and liked how similar it was to my inspiration, like using the pinks and blues.
Tumblr media
Slide Six - Text: What I liked about Nosedive:
GUI - With nosedive I really loved the minimalist designs of the interface which looks very futuristic and how social media is going towards in its aesthetic design.
Colour Scheme - The colour scheme of Nosedive is one of my favourite parts of this episode as the way that it changes throughout the episode is extremely representative of the story.
Minimalist and Subtle Tech - I think that the aesthetic of which black mirror has with very subtle tech is something of which I really inspired to create. The slightly glazed over - tech eyes from the contact lenses is something I really loved.
End Twist - The ending of this episode is something of which I really enjoyed as the episode started as a happy thing and followed a path of a tragedy to the main characters downfall.
Tumblr media
Slide Seven Text:
Tales of Friendship - This was one of the examples of which Jason showed us during the pitch. One thing of which I loved with this is the playful tone. Which is why I’m considering doing this for my tracking 2.
Mario Dog - This is one of my favourite videos of which is on the internet. I am defo thinking about doing something like this for my tracking 2, I love how the dog interacts with the 3D elements as they’re tracked into the scene.
Epic Rap Battles of History - Epic rap battles has always been an inspiration of mine. I adore the moving elements behind which create an engaging visuals which was tracked and merged to the actor.
Creating a City - An idea I had was to create a fake scenario with a fake city. I like this idea a lot and I think that also having a neon colour signs tracked to the city would look great too. I will defo develop this idea more.
Tumblr media
Slide Eight - Text:
Mario Dog - This video is something I watched before I joined the course and it is something of which I thought about possibly doing. I liked the idea of having someone interacting with blocks and as I liked the look of the 3D elements.
Epic Rap Battles of History - Epic Rap battles of History is something which is super exciting. They have their own behind the scenes and the specific episode to the left is very cool as it shows parts of how the 2D elements in the motion background were made. This is one of my inspirations like the mario dog as after watching this for the first time it gave me the inspiration to learn after effects. So this is something of which I want to implement somehow.

Slide Nine - Speaker Notes: I think that despite my choice of what the actual project is, I will be creating something which shares the key aesthetics of Black mirror. As this is something which I personally am influenced by with my work. As I love small details and the subtlety which means you can watch the episodes over and over again with seeing each  new detail every time. This is something which influenced my tracking 1 too.
Tumblr media
Slide Ten - Speaker Notes:  In this trailer they tried mixing the episodes within the real world events looking back at 2017. Showing the merge and fine line between the shows and reality. I absolutely love this trailer and think that the clips of which from the show and the news really blend together and the editing is so great.“Black Mirror” itself is actually confirmed by the creators to be a mirror of our current reality to see where technology is heading and also the ‘black mirror’ we get when our devices turn off.
Tumblr media
Slide Eleven - Text:
Other Episodes:
Entire History of You - With this episode I absolutely adored the subtle tech and the grain idea which matches with the contact lenses which people wear.
Arkangel - I adore the aesthetic from this and the introduction of the new technology which begins in entire history of you. This episode talks about the ethics behind some of the technology which is in the future
White Bear - White bear is an episode which really left me in shock. The ending is brilliant and as like many episodes the technology is subtle and powerful with its message.
San Juniper - The technology in San Juniper is something which is difficult to even fathom. The episode looks as if the two main protagonists are in a flashback episode but it’s revealed that they’re in a fake reality of which souls are uploaded to once the body dies.
Speaker Notes: While deciding to chose which idea I eventually want to settle down for, I decided to re-watch some of my favourite episodes and what I liked about each of them.

Slide Twelve - Text:
Track the Future - This is a  piece of work which is created by another student at this university doing this project previously. I absolutly adore the look and feel of it and think  that they have the track completely right.
Eye of the Storm - Eye of the storm is a music video which Jason showed us. I absolutely love the tracking and the idea behind here. I loved the behind the scenes with the costume using green screen and I think if I follow my city idea I will key out something within the costume or maybe do this as a test shot.
Various Futuristic city shots - Within various films and movies seeing a futuristic city is something I’ve kind of always had an interest in building. If I do this I want to make it realistic so it would probably be more of an over the shoulder shot or a POV style shot. Kind of a Ready Player 1 vibe too.

Slide Fourteen: Street idea

Slide fifteen Text: In class portal work - Here’s a test shot I made of the door idea which we did in class. I also took a photo of the door for reference.
Tumblr media
Slide Sixteen: Cities idea with Neon Lights
Tumblr media
Slide Seventeen:  Neon Light designs - For my 3D design idea of the neon lights, I sketched out a bunch of lighting ideas, which I will track to the streets of Cardiff to look something more like the image below.
Tumblr media
Slide Eighteen: Testing out Neon Lights in cinema 4D
Tumblr media
Slide Nineteen: City shots for an idea of comping a city together.
Tumblr media
Slide Twenty: City shots 2 - Location shots (where I’d possibly shoot)
Tumblr media
Slide twenty one: Here’s some adjustments I’d do to the shots, for example the reds I’d add in Neon signs, the blue and green are a mixture of cleanups and sign replacement.
Tumblr media
Slide twenty two: Chosen Idea - City POV - Black mirror Aesthetic
Tumblr media
Slide Twenty three: Final slide
I think that my pitch didn’t go as good as I would like when I was presenting it but I feel that my ideas were shown well but I think my nerves got the better of me and I didn’t talk about my ideas well so I am planing on speaking to Jason about my ideas.

Psalm 18
Psalm 18
Royal Thanksgiving for Victory
To the leader. A Psalm of David the servant of the Lord, who addressed the words of this song to the Lord on the day when the Lord delivered him from the hand of all his enemies, and from the hand of Saul. He said:
1 I love you, O Lord, my strength. 2 The Lord is my rock, my fortress, and my deliverer, my God, my rock in whom I take refuge, my shield, and the horn of my salvation, my stronghold. 3 I call upon the Lord, who is worthy to be praised, so I shall be saved from my enemies.
4 The cords of death encompassed me; the torrents of perdition assailed me; 5 the cords of Sheol entangled me; the snares of death confronted me.
6 In my distress I called upon the Lord; to my God I cried for help. From his temple he heard my voice, and my cry to him reached his ears.
7 Then the earth reeled and rocked; the foundations also of the mountains trembled and quaked, because he was angry. 8 Smoke went up from his nostrils, and devouring fire from his mouth; glowing coals flamed forth from him. 9 He bowed the heavens, and came down; thick darkness was under his feet. 10 He rode on a cherub, and flew; he came swiftly upon the wings of the wind. 11 He made darkness his covering around him, his canopy thick clouds dark with water. 12 Out of the brightness before him there broke through his clouds hailstones and coals of fire. 13 The Lord also thundered in the heavens, and the Most High uttered his voice.[a] 14 And he sent out his arrows, and scattered them; he flashed forth lightnings, and routed them. 15 Then the channels of the sea were seen, and the foundations of the world were laid bare at your rebuke, O Lord, at the blast of the breath of your nostrils.
16 He reached down from on high, he took me; he drew me out of mighty waters. 17 He delivered me from my strong enemy, and from those who hated me; for they were too mighty for me. 18 They confronted me in the day of my calamity; but the Lord was my support. 19 He brought me out into a broad place; he delivered me, because he delighted in me.
20 The Lord rewarded me according to my righteousness; according to the cleanness of my hands he recompensed me. 21 For I have kept the ways of the Lord, and have not wickedly departed from my God. 22 For all his ordinances were before me, and his statutes I did not put away from me. 23 I was blameless before him, and I kept myself from guilt. 24 Therefore the Lord has recompensed me according to my righteousness, according to the cleanness of my hands in his sight.
25 With the loyal you show yourself loyal; with the blameless you show yourself blameless; 26 with the pure you show yourself pure; and with the crooked you show yourself perverse. 27 For you deliver a humble people, but the haughty eyes you bring down. 28 It is you who light my lamp; the Lord, my God, lights up my darkness. 29 By you I can crush a troop, and by my God I can leap over a wall. 30 This God—his way is perfect; the promise of the Lord proves true; he is a shield for all who take refuge in him.
31 For who is God except the Lord? And who is a rock besides our God?— 32 the God who girded me with strength, and made my way safe. 33 He made my feet like the feet of a deer, and set me secure on the heights. 34 He trains my hands for war, so that my arms can bend a bow of bronze. 35 You have given me the shield of your salvation, and your right hand has supported me; your help[b] has made me great. 36 You gave me a wide place for my steps under me, and my feet did not slip. 37 I pursued my enemies and overtook them; and did not turn back until they were consumed. 38 I struck them down, so that they were not able to rise; they fell under my feet. 39 For you girded me with strength for the battle; you made my assailants sink under me. 40 You made my enemies turn their backs to me, and those who hated me I destroyed. 41 They cried for help, but there was no one to save them; they cried to the Lord, but he did not answer them. 42 I beat them fine, like dust before the wind; I cast them out like the mire of the streets.
43 You delivered me from strife with the peoples;[c] you made me head of the nations; people whom I had not known served me. 44 As soon as they heard of me they obeyed me; foreigners came cringing to me. 45 Foreigners lost heart, and came trembling out of their strongholds.
46 The Lord lives! Blessed be my rock, and exalted be the God of my salvation, 47 the God who gave me vengeance and subdued peoples under me; 48 who delivered me from my enemies; indeed, you exalted me above my adversaries; you delivered me from the violent.
49 For this I will extol you, O Lord, among the nations, and sing praises to your name. 50 Great triumphs he gives to his king, and shows steadfast love to his anointed, to David and his descendants forever.

1 Kings 3:16-28
Solomon’s Wisdom in Judgment
16 Later, two women who were prostitutes came to the king and stood before him. 17 The one woman said, “Please, my lord, this woman and I live in the same house; and I gave birth while she was in the house. 18 Then on the third day after I gave birth, this woman also gave birth. We were together; there was no one else with us in the house, only the two of us were in the house. 19 Then this woman’s son died in the night, because she lay on him. 20 She got up in the middle of the night and took my son from beside me while your servant slept. She laid him at her breast, and laid her dead son at my breast. 21 When I rose in the morning to nurse my son, I saw that he was dead; but when I looked at him closely in the morning, clearly it was not the son I had borne.” 22 But the other woman said, “No, the living son is mine, and the dead son is yours.” The first said, “No, the dead son is yours, and the living son is mine.” So they argued before the king.
23 Then the king said, “The one says, ‘This is my son that is alive, and your son is dead’; while the other says, ‘Not so! Your son is dead, and my son is the living one.’” 24 So the king said, “Bring me a sword,” and they brought a sword before the king. 25 The king said, “Divide the living boy in two; then give half to the one, and half to the other.” 26 But the woman whose son was alive said to the king—because compassion for her son burned within her—“Please, my lord, give her the living boy; certainly do not kill him!” The other said, “It shall be neither mine nor yours; divide it.” 27 Then the king responded: “Give the first woman the living boy; do not kill him. She is his mother.” 28 All Israel heard of the judgment that the king had rendered; and they stood in awe of the king, because they perceived that the wisdom of God was in him, to execute justice.

Acts 27:27-44
27 When the fourteenth night had come, as we were drifting across the sea of Adria, about midnight the sailors suspected that they were nearing land. 28 So they took soundings and found twenty fathoms; a little farther on they took soundings again and found fifteen fathoms. 29 Fearing that we might run on the rocks, they let down four anchors from the stern and prayed for day to come. 30 But when the sailors tried to escape from the ship and had lowered the boat into the sea, on the pretext of putting out anchors from the bow, 31 Paul said to the centurion and the soldiers, “Unless these men stay in the ship, you cannot be saved.” 32 Then the soldiers cut away the ropes of the boat and set it adrift.
33 Just before daybreak, Paul urged all of them to take some food, saying, “Today is the fourteenth day that you have been in suspense and remaining without food, having eaten nothing. 34 Therefore I urge you to take some food, for it will help you survive; for none of you will lose a hair from your heads.” 35 After he had said this, he took bread; and giving thanks to God in the presence of all, he broke it and began to eat. 36 Then all of them were encouraged and took food for themselves. 37 (We were in all two hundred seventy-six[a] persons in the ship.) 38 After they had satisfied their hunger, they lightened the ship by throwing the wheat into the sea.
The Shipwreck
39 In the morning they did not recognize the land, but they noticed a bay with a beach, on which they planned to run the ship ashore, if they could. 40 So they cast off the anchors and left them in the sea. At the same time they loosened the ropes that tied the steering-oars; then hoisting the foresail to the wind, they made for the beach. 41 But striking a reef,[b] they ran the ship aground; the bow stuck and remained immovable, but the stern was being broken up by the force of the waves. 42 The soldiers’ plan was to kill the prisoners, so that none might swim away and escape; 43 but the centurion, wishing to save Paul, kept them from carrying out their plan. He ordered those who could swim to jump overboard first and make for the land, 44 and the rest to follow, some on planks and others on pieces of the ship. And so it was that all were brought safely to land.

Mark 14:12-26
The Passover with the Disciples
12 On the first day of Unleavened Bread, when the Passover lamb is sacrificed, his disciples said to him, “Where do you want us to go and make the preparations for you to eat the Passover?” 13 So he sent two of his disciples, saying to them, “Go into the city, and a man carrying a jar of water will meet you; follow him, 14 and wherever he enters, say to the owner of the house, ‘The Teacher asks, Where is my guest room where I may eat the Passover with my disciples?’ 15 He will show you a large room upstairs, furnished and ready. Make preparations for us there.” 16 So the disciples set out and went to the city, and found everything as he had told them; and they prepared the Passover meal.
17 When it was evening, he came with the twelve. 18 And when they had taken their places and were eating, Jesus said, “Truly I tell you, one of you will betray me, one who is eating with me.” 19 They began to be distressed and to say to him one after another, “Surely, not I?” 20 He said to them, “It is one of the twelve, one who is dipping bread[a] into the bowl[b] with me. 21 For the Son of Man goes as it is written of him, but woe to that one by whom the Son of Man is betrayed! It would have been better for that one not to have been born.”
The Institution of the Lord’s Supper
22 While they were eating, he took a loaf of bread, and after blessing it he broke it, gave it to them, and said, “Take; this is my body.” 23 Then he took a cup, and after giving thanks he gave it to them, and all of them drank from it. 24 He said to them, “This is my blood of the[c] covenant, which is poured out for many. 25 Truly I tell you, I will never again drink of the fruit of the vine until that day when I drink it new in the kingdom of God.”
Peter’s Denial Foretold
26 When they had sung the hymn, they went out to the Mount of Olives.

THE BOOK OF ESTHER - From The Douay-Rheims Bible - Latin Vulgate
Chapter 16

Chapter 16
A copy of the king's letter in favour of the Jews.
[1] The great king Artaxerxes, from India to Ethiopia, to the governors and princes of a hundred and twenty-seven provinces, which obey our command, sendeth greeting.
Rex magnus Artaxerxes ab India usque Aethiopiam centum viginti septem provinciarum ducibus ac principibus, qui nostrae jussioni obediunt, salutem dicit.
[2] Many have abused unto pride the goodness of princes, and the honour that hath been bestowed upon them:
Multi bonitate principum et honore, qui in eos collatus est, abusi sunt in superbiam :
[3] And not only endeavour to oppress the king's subjects, but not bearing the glory that is given them, take in hand to practise also against them that gave it.
et non solum subjectos regibus nituntur opprimere, sed datam sibi gloriam non ferentes, in ipsos, qui dederunt, moliuntur insidias.
[4] Neither are they content not to return thanks for benefits received, and to violate in themselves the laws of humanity, but they think they can also escape the justice of God who seeth all things.
Nec contenti sunt gratias non agere beneficiis, et humanitatis in se jura violare, sed Dei quoque cuncta cernentis arbitrantur se posse fugere sententiam.
[5] And they break out into so great madness, as to endeavour to undermine by lies such as observe diligently the offices committed to them, and do all things in such manner as to be worthy of all men's praise,
Et in tantum vesaniae proruperunt, ut eos, qui credita sibi officia diligenter observant, et ita cuncta agunt ut omnium laude digni sint, mendaciorum cuniculis conentur subvertere,
[6] While with crafty fraud they deceive the ears of princes that are well meaning, and judge of others by their own nature.
dum aures principum simplices, et ex sua natura alios aestimantes, callida fraude decipiunt.
[7] Now this is proved both from ancient histories, and by the things which are done daily, how the good designs of kings are depraved by the evil suggestions of certain men.
Quae res et ex veteribus probatur historiis, et ex his, quae geruntur quotidie, quomodo malis quorumdam suggestionibus regum studia depraventur.
[8] Wherefore we must provide for the peace of all provinces.
Unde providendum est paci omnium provinciarum.
[9] Neither must you think, if we command different things, that it cometh of the levity of our mind, but that we give sentence according to the quality and necessity of times, as the profit of the commonwealth requireth.
Nec putare debetis, si diversa jubeamus, ex animi nostri venire levitate, sed pro qualitate et necessitate temporum, ut reipublicae poscit utilitas, ferre sententiam.
[10] Now that you may more plainly understand what we say, I Aman the son of Amadathi, a Macedonian both in mind and country, and having nothing of the Persian blood, but with his cruelty staining our goodness, was received being a stranger by us:
Et ut manifestius quod dicimus, intelligatis, Aman filius Amadathi, et animo et gente Macedo, alienusque a Persarum sanguine, et pietatem nostram sua crudelitate commaculans, peregrinus a nobis susceptus est :
[11] And found our humanity so great towards him, that he was called our father, and was worshipped by all as the next man after the king:
et tantam in se expertus humanitatem, ut pater noster vocaretur, et adoraretur ab omnibus post regem secundus :
[12] But he was so far puffed up with arrogancy, as to go about to deprive us of our kingdom and life.
qui in tantum arrogantiae tumorem sublatus est, ut regno privare nos niteretur et spiritu.
[13] For with certain new and unheard of devices he hath sought the destruction of Mardochai, by whose fidelity and good services our life was saved, and of Esther the partner of our kingdom, with all their nation:
Nam Mardochaeum, cujus fide et beneficiis vivimus, et consortem regni nostri Esther cum omni gente sua, novis quibusdam atque inauditis machinis expetivit in mortem :
[14] Thinking that after they were slain, he might work treason against us left alone without friends, and might transfer the kingdom of the Persians to the Macedonians.
hoc cogitans ut illis interfectis, insidiaretur nostrae solitudini, et regnum Persarum transferret in Macedonas.
[15] But we have found that the Jews, who were by that most wicked man appointed to be slain, are in no fault at all, but contrariwise, use just laws,
Nos autem a pessimo mortalium Judaeos neci destinatos, in nulla penitus culpa reperimus, sed e contrario justis utentes legibus,
[16] And are the children of the highest and the greatest, and the ever living God, by whose benefit the kingdom was given both to our fathers and to us, and is kept unto this day.
et filios altissimi et maximi, semperque viventis Dei, cujus beneficio et patribus nostris et nobis regnum est traditum, et usque hodie custoditur.
[17] Wherefore know ye that those letters which he sent in our name, are void and of no effect.
Unde eas litteras, quas sub nomine nostro ille direxerat, sciatis esse irritas.
[18] For which crime both he himself that devised it, and all his kindred hang on gibbets, before the gates of this city Susan: not we, but God repaying him as he deserved.
Pro quo scelere ante portas hujus urbis, id est, Susan, et ipse qui machinatus est, et omnis cognatio ejus pendet in patibulis : non nobis, sed Deo reddente ei quod meruit.
[19] But this edict, which we now send, shall be published in all cities, that the Jews may freely follow their own laws.
Hoc autem edictum, quod nunc mittimus, in cunctis urbibus proponatur, ut liceat Judaeis uti legibus suis.
[20] And you shall aid them that they may kill those who had prepared themselves to kill them, on the thirteenth day of the twelfth month, which is called Adar.
Quibus debetis esse adminiculo, ut eos, qui se ad necem eorum paraverant, possint interficere tertiadecima die mensis duodecimi, qui vocatur Adar.
[21] For the almighty God hath turned this day of sadness and mourning into joy to them.
Hanc enim diem, Deus omnipotens, moeroris et luctus, eis vertit in gaudium.
[22] Wherefore you shall also count this day among other festival days, and celebrate it with all joy, that it may be known also in times to come,
Unde et vos inter ceteros festos dies, hanc habetote diem, et celebrate eam cum omni laetitia, ut et in posterum cognoscatur
[23] That all they who faithfully obey the Persians, receive a worthy reward for their fidelity: but they that are traitors to their kingdom, are destroyed for their wickedness.
omnes, qui fideliter Persis obediunt, dignam pro fide recipere mercedem; qui autem insidiantur regno eorum, perire pro scelere.
[24] And let every province and city, that will not be partaker of this solemnity, perish by the sword and by fire, and be destroyed in such manner as to be made unpassable, both to men and beasts, for an example of contempt, and disobedience,

Jerom writes, "The copy of the letter of king Artaxerxes, which he wrote in favour of the Jews, to all the provinces of his kingdom, which also is not in the Heb. volume." It should properly occur, C. viii. 13, as it does in Greek. The edict is well written in that language, which has induced a belief that it is not a translation. C. --- But that is no very strong argument. H.
Ver. 2. Princes. Gr. "Beneficent." Luke xxii. 25. C. --- Gr. "Many of those who have been the most honoured by the kindness of the beneficent, have increased in folly, and not only endeavour to injure our subjects, but, unable to hear the weight of favours, devise schemes against their benefactors."
Ver. 4. Neither. Gr. "And they not only take away gratitude from among men, but elated with good fortune, which they had not before experienced, they flatter themselves that they will escape the sentence of an all-seeing God, levelled against the wicked." H. --- Artaxerxes insists with reason on the ingratitude of Aman, as it was a crime punishable by their laws; (Cyrop. i. Brisson ii. p. 250.) and the Persian kings were particularly careful to reward those who had done them good. C.
Ver. 5. And. Gr. "For oftentimes fair speeches, or (H.) revenge, (paramuqia. Isai. i. 24. C.) has made several of those who have been in authority, and entrusted with the affairs of their friends, partakers in the spilling of innocent blood, and involved them in irremediable calamities, by the wicked craft of those who purposely lead astray the unsuspecting benevolence of governors." H. --- Josephus (xi. 3.) gives nearly the same sense: (C.) "For some of these, being placed in power by their friends, and bearing a private hatred towards some, have deluded their princes by false reasons, and by accusations have persuaded them to stir up the wrath of those who have done no wrong; on which account, they have been in danger of perishing." This author was not, therefore, unacquainted with the fragment, or part of the history, before us. H.
Ver. 7. Proved. Gr. "may be seen, not so much from ancient histories, as we have observed, but more so, if ye examine what wicked things have been done recently, by the fault (or cruelty) of those who have been unworthily in command: and if ye attend, in future, that we may without trouble settle our kingdom in peace for all men. For though we make some changes, yet we make a discernment of what falls under our inspection, and other things with more equity." He intimates that the former decree of Aman had been subreptitious.
Ver. 10. Now. Gr. "For as Aman, of Amadathos, a Macedonian, a stranger to the real blood of the Persians, and of a very different character from our goodness, and who, though a stranger to us, partook of that philanthropy which we have for every nation, insomuch as to be styled," &c. H. --- At this time the Macedonians were hardly known. Capel. --- But this may be questioned, as their kingdom was of ancient date. Houbigant. --- some think that the Asiatic Macedonians may be designated. Hardouin. Pliny v. 30. 31. --- These, however, may have been so called only after the conquests of Alexander. This king fought against the Greeks, of whom the Macedonians formed a part. T. --- The name may here be placed only for a stranger. C. --- Staining. The faults of ministers often redound to the disgrace of those who employ them. M.
Ver. 12. Life. This he might only suspect; (C.) or his machinations with the two porters, might be declared after his disgrace. H. --- Capellus thinks it improbable that Aman intended to murder the queen, as he was so much elated at being invited by her to a feast, &c. But his schemes were various: (Houbig.) and who can pretend to say what would have satisfied his cruelty and ambition? H.
Ver. 14. Without. Gr. "abandoned." H. --- Macedonians; or to himself, who was of that nation. It was not necessary to call over forces, as Capellus would suppose.
Ver. 16. God. Cyrus had styled him, "the God of heaven." Houbig. 1 Esd. i. H. --- But Darius embraced the true religion, and adored God. T. --- Fathers. "Hystaspes was not a descendant of Cyrus, but he was of the same royal stock." Just. i. Herod. iii. 85. --- And is. Gr. "by the best disposition. You will therefore do well not to make use of the letter, sent by Aman." The edict could not be repealed; (Capel. Houbig.) though this seems doubtful, when it was manifestly subreptitious, (M.) unjust, and not sealed by the nobles. C.
Ver. 18. Gibbets. Aman was thus treated, several months before his ten sons. C. vii. 10. and ix. 6. Yet all the family might still be seen hanging, when this edict was dispatched. Houbigant suspects that this and the following verses properly belong to the letter written by Esther and Mardochai. The arguments are not very cogent. H.
Ver. 19. Laws. This was privilege often desired. Joseph. xiii.4.
Ver. 20. Kill. Gr. "take revenge on those who in the day of distress shall fall upon them, on the 13th."
Ver. 21. Sadness. Gr. "destruction of his chosen race, into," &c. H.
Ver. 22. Days. A festival was kept in memory of the destruction of the maji, in which this king was a principal actor. Herod. iii. 79. --- The Persians were ordered to keep the 13th of Adar, on account of the preservation of the royal family, and the ruin of a great enemy. C.
Ver. 23. All. Gr. "Salvation is to us, and to all well-affected Persians: but a memorial of destruction to all who are traitors to us."
Ver. 24. And. Gr. "But every country or city throughout the kingdom, which shall not comply, shall be consumed with the spear and fire in wrath." --- Beasts. Gr. adds hyperbolically, "and birds, and also be accounted most abominable for ever." H. --- Similar expressions occur in the prophets, to denote an entire destruction. Jer. ix. 10. &c. Mardochai and Esther have left us in this work the most perfect example of virtue. The latter is given us a pattern of Christian sovereigns, and a figure of the Church. S. Jerom ad Paulin. (C.) and prol. in Sophon. --- Like Judith, she proved the salvation of her people, and the ruin of their adversaries. Nothing could be more striking, (W.) or visible, than the hand of God in these transactions. H. - Esther was also a type of the blessed Virgin, by whose intercession the head of the serpent is crushed, and letters of grace succeed to the hand-writing that stood against us. S. Thomas, prol. in ep. Cath. W.

Condition Citizenship Is Alive As well as Well
Tumblr media
benefits of eu citizenship Did the fourteenth Amendment do away along with State Citizenship?
"The 14 Amendment from the Constitution associated with the United States, ratified within 1868, creates or even at least identifies with regard to the first time the citizenship states, as unique from that in the says. " Black's Legislation Thesaurus, 5th Edition, g. 591 [1979].
benefits of eu citizenship
The correct answer is completely not.
In fact the actual leading as well as controlling situation on Express Citizenship and also United States Citizenship is actually the Supreme Court circumstance, The Slaughter-House Cases (16 Wallace 36: 21 T. Ed. 394 [1873]). In this event, the Best Court differentiates between Point out Citizenship along with United States Citizenship.
"It is quite clear, after that, that there is any citizenship states and some sort of citizenship of a condition, which are distinct through one another and which rely upon various characteristics regarding the individual. inch The actual Slaughter-House Cases: 83 Oughout. S. 36, seventy four.
"The importance of the scenario may hardly be over rate. Through distinguishing between express citizenship and national citizenship through emphasizing that the particular rights in addition to privileges involving federal citizenship do not really include the protection connected with ordinary civil liberties for example freedom of speech as well as press, religion, etc., however only the privileges what type enjoys by virtue associated with his government citizenship, typically the Court avoided, for often the time being at minimum, the trend in our own constitutional system evidently meant by the framers on the amendment and reserved towards the states the responsibility regarding safeguarding civil rights usually. inches Cases In Constitutional Regulation by Robert Farrenheit. Cushman, 5th Edition, pp. 250-251 (College Law Textbook) [1979].
"Citizenship will be developed in two benefits and also immunities clauses regarding the United States Metabolism.... The Slaughter-House Cases [1873] 83 Ough. S. 36, 21 D. Ed. 394, emphasized the actual distinct character of federal government and state citizenship. Slaughter-House held that privileges along with immunities conferred by point out citizenship were outside national reach through the 14th Modification.... Federal citizenship had been viewed as including only this kind of things as interstate journey and voting. Whilst following decisions have prolonged the particular meaning of citizenship within the Fourteenth Amendment, Slaughter-House continues to be controlling in that this precludes use of rights and immunities language inside protecting people by fed authority. very well Constitutional Rules Deskbook -- Individual Legal rights, by Chandler, Enslen, Renstrom; Second Version, p. 634 (Lawyers Supportive Publishing, 1993).
"The 14 Amendment do not obliterate typically the differentiation between national in addition to status citizenship, but rather maintained it. Slaughter-House Cases. micron 103d Congress, 1st Program, Document 103-6: The Metabolic rate of the United Says of America; Evaluation And also Interpretation: Annotations Associated with Instances Decided By The Great Court Of The Usa States To 06 twenty nine, 1992, p. 1566. one
In addition, the Substantial Court in The Slaughter-House Situations concluded that generally there are two residents below the Constitution of often the United States:
"The following observation is more essential in view of the actual arguments involving counsel throughout the present case. It really is, that the distinction among citizenship of the Unified States and citizenship of the State is clearly acknowledged and established.
It is usually quite crystal clear, then, which there is a citizenship of the United Declares, and a citizenship of your State, which are specific coming from each other, as well as which rely on different features or conditions in the particular individual.
We think this particular distinction and its specific reputation in this Change of excellent weight with this argument, since the subsequent paragraph of this exact same section, which is typically the one primarily relied upon by the injured parties within error, speaks just connected with privileges and immunities associated with citizens of the Integrated States, and speak regarding those of citizens with the several States. The discussion, however, in favor involving the injured persons rests totally on the supposition that will the citizenship is often the very same, and the liberties and immunities guaranteed through the clause are exactly the same.
The particular language is, 'No Status shall make or perhaps impose any law that will abridge the protection under the law or maybe immunities of individuals connected with the United States. ' It is a small remarkable, if this terms has been intended as a new protection for the citizen associated with a State from the legal power of his personal Condition, that the term citizen from the State ought to be left out launched so carefully used, and also used in contradistinction in order to folks of the Combined States, in the really phrase which precedes that. It truly is too clear intended for debate that the modify in phraseology ended up being followed understandingly and with an objective.
Of the privileges along with immunities of the resident of the United Claims, regarding the privileges in addition to immunities of the person of the Express, as well as what they respectively tend to be, we will presently think about; yet we wish to be able to state right here that the idea is only the previous that are placed by this specific clause underneath the protection regarding the Federal Make-up, and also that the latter, what ever they might be, are not supposed to have any extra safety by this paragraph in the amendment. " The Slaughter-House Cases: 83 U. H. 36, at 73-74.
"The expression, Citizen of the Point out, is carefully disregarded in this article. In Article 4, Area 2, Clause a single, on the Constitution of the actual United States, it experienced been currently provided in which 'the Citizens of every Status shall be entitled for you to almost all Privileges and Immunities involving Citizens in the particular several Expresses. ' Typically the rights connected with Citizens associated with the States [under Article IV, Segment two, Clause 1] along with of citizens of typically the United States [under The Fourteenth Amendment] are each protected simply by these different conditions. Which these rights are individual and distinct, was kept inside the Slaughterhouse Cases, lately made the decision by the Huge court. Often the rights regarding Citizens with the State, because such, are not in mind in the Fourteenth Variation. These people stand as these people did prior to the adoption involving the Fourteenth Mending, in addition to are fully guaranteed by simply other provisions. " United states of america v. Anthony: 24 Given. Cas. 829, 830 (Case No. 14, 459) [1873]. 2
"This supply [The Fourteenth Amendment] protects only all those rights peculiar to as being a citizen of the government government; will not protect these rights which usually relate to help state citizenship. Notice Slaughter-House Cases 83 You. T. (16 Wall. ) thirty six, 21 L. Erectile dysfunction. 394 (1873). " Smith sixth is v. Temmer: 829 N. Supp. 1226, 1232 [1993].
"In regard to that particular modification [The 14th Amendment] counsel for your person in this court really says that there are usually certain benefits and immunities which are part of a homeowner of the United Says as such; or else the item would be non-sense to get the 14 Amendment in order to prohibit circumstances from abridging them, and proceeds to be able to argue that entrance for you to the bar of any Condition of a individual who possesses often the required learning and personality is definitely one of those which often a situation may not refuse. In this second option proposal we are not capable to go along with advice. We accept him this there are privileges as well as immunities belonging to people states, in that relationship and figure, and which it is these these types of alone which a Express is actually forbidden to recap, recapitulate, review. However the right to entry to practice from the legal courts of a State is not really one of them. This particular right inside no feeling depends on citizenship connected with the United States. This has not, as much as all of us know, ever been created in any kind of State, as well as in any case, to help depend on citizenship in all. Definitely many notable and recognized lawyers possess been admitted to rehearse, each in the State and also Government courts, who had been not residents of the actual United States or associated with virtually any State. But, in no matter what basis this correct might be placed, so much as it can have got any relation to citizenship whatsoever, it would appear that, as to the particular tennis courts of a Point out, it would connect with citizenship of the State, so that as to Federal courts, it might relate to citizenship regarding the United States.
The actual opinion just delivered inside Slaughter-House Cases renders sophisticated argument in the existing case unneeded; for, unless of course we are entirely along with radically mistaken within the concepts on which those instances are decided, the proper to manage and control the allowing of permit to practice legislation throughout the courts of some sort of Status is one involving those powers which can be certainly not transferred for its defense to the Federal federal government, and its workout is with no manner ruled or even controlled by citizenship connected with the United States within the party looking for these kinds of license.
It is unwanted to repeat the disagreement on which the view inside those cases will be set up. It is adequate to say they may be definitive of the present situation. " Bradwell v. Condition of Illinios: 83 United. S 130, at 138-139 [1873] three
Therefore, State citizenship in addition to United States citizenship are generally provided with regard to in typically the Constitution of the Usa States. Resident of a new state is to become available at Article IV, Part a couple of, Clause 1 associated with the Constitution states while a citizen of often the United States is situated from the Fourteenth Amendment.

name/alias: eve pronouns: she/her timezone: GMT other characters: nope! anything else you want us to know: i’m in another group so my activity could fluctuate but i imagine i’ll be on the dash pretty often!
the muse !!
name: alex gaskarth age + birthday: 29, 14th december job: vocalist of all time low gender + pronouns: cis male, he/him
faceclaim: n/a
secret: I just want to apologise for how long this is… Alex’s secrets kinda grew arms and legs the longer I played him. So, it’s summarised, and then the full version is below it, along with a bit of history about he and John O’Callaghan’s relationship since it’s relevant (I should be joining with the Johno reserve but if they don’t join then I’ll edit some things later!). BUT I’M REALLY SORRY BECAUSE IT’S HUGE.
SUMMARY
Alex’s first girlfriend falls pregnant with their child aged sixteen, but aborts it without his knowledge. After their break-up, Alex suffers a groin injury in gym class that leaves him infertile, and heartbroken over the idea that he could have been a father had it not been for the abortion.
Later in life, Alex’s second girlfriend falls pregnant after sleeping with him and an unknown man around the same time. They were, however, not together at the time, and she is unaware of his slim-to-none chances of conceiving. She’s aware he doesn’t want to be with her and is too afraid to reveal the child could be his, and chooses to raise it never attempting to find out who the real father is. They remain friends and Alex dotes on the little girl he calls his niece.
A twisted, drug-fuelled relationship with a third girl on tour results in her six-year-old son accidentally consuming ecstasy belonging to Alex while in his care. He saves his life after the child suffers a heart attack but the mother is understandably sickened and furious with Alex, refusing to let him see the boy ever again and cutting all contact with him.
Alex sleeps around even more to cope afterwards, including with fans of his band (never underage though), and is eventually diagnosed with Histronic Personality Disorder and sex addiction to go alongside his lifelong struggle with anxiety.
Lastly, Alex got together with John O’Callaghan in the summer three years ago. At first it was just sex but soon became more. At one point, John was struggling with the idea of falling in love with Alex, and broke up with him. The abandonment sent Alex into a downward spiral and he was taking more drugs than he ever had. He eventually overdosed by accident and ended up in hospital; John attempted to visit but to no avail. Days after being released, Alex overdosed again – this time, purposefully. The mixture of drugs in his system gave him a heart attack. Despite refusing rehab or therapy, Alex went on to make a full recovery these past few months, and he and John got back together whilst he was in hospital. They’ve been going steady for a while now, openly in love with each other, but Alex still struggles to fight his demons. His addictions still taunt him daily. His boyfriend doesn’t know his second overdose was an attempted suicide, either.
DETAILS
At aged fourteen, Alex got his first girlfriend, whom he lost his virginity to at fifteen, and that relationship went on to last until he was sixteen. They broke up due to feeling like they needed to explore new things – they were only young, after all.
At least, that was what they told everyone. And while it was partly true, their relationship had grown particularly strained after Alex got her pregnant recently after they turned sixteen. There was some debate about whether she should abort or not, and she ended up doing so without fully consulting Alex first. They had agreed to leave it for a weekend and think about what they both wanted, make a decision from there… but she went with her mother to the clinic and got the baby aborted on the Saturday afternoon. Her parents had always hated Alex, and her older brother thought he was bad news too. Alex was heartbroken, but he understood it was ultimately not his decision, and they would have struggled to handle a baby at their age anyway. Though, he couldn’t help but feel her parents had talked her into it to spite him, and the fact she’d went through with it was painful to think about. Even so, their relationship continued for a few more months after that, and only their parents ever knew about the pregnancy. Despite their relationship ending on a fairly mutual note, they didn’t keep in touch after high school.
Soon after the break-up, however, when Alex was just barely seventeen, he suffered an injury in gym class to his groin – hit in the balls by a baseball, something he would’ve laughed about, had it not been so serious. It rendered him infertile. There was little to no chance he would ever conceive a child. Alex was only young, but he’d always pictured himself being a dad someday. He was crushed to think that if his ex hadn’t aborted, he could have had his chance to be a father, before it was too late. His whole life would have been very different, but he could’ve had a kid. He kept that to himself though, too hurt to explain it to everyone – too much of a long story to spill to his friends that he’d gotten his girlfriend pregnant and hidden it from everyone. It wasn’t like he was in a relationship with anybody who wanted a child; he didn’t see any need to talk about it. Not even to his parents.
When Alex was eighteen, he met a girl a couple of years older than him, and she soon became a serious girlfriend of his, lasting until he was twenty-three. In that time, his band took off, he bought a house… he grew up. He and this second girlfriend had a mutual break-up upon realising they had no time for each other, with their careers both needing serious focus to stay afloat, but subsequently stayed firm friends. Secretly, Alex also wanted to lead more of a ‘rockstar’ lifestyle – it was only after this break-up that he became truly promiscuous.
Some time later, when home from tour, he went through a short period of hooking up with this ex. Her feelings for him began to resurface, but it was more than obvious Alex wasn’t looking to rekindle anything. Upset, she goes out drinking and has a drunken one-night stand with a nameless man in an attempt to feel better. Only after this does she realise she’s fallen pregnant. Unaware of Alex’s infertility, she was embarrassed and alone and scared. Convincing herself that even if the child was Alex’s, he wouldn’t be interested, she fabricated a lie for her friends and family about the father, telling them he was simply a man she’d been in the early stages of dating who didn’t want to know. She made her peace with never knowing if the daughter she gave birth to months later was fathered by Alex or her nameless hook-up. She and Alex stayed friends, and he didn’t think twice about the dates lining up, because why would that beautiful little girl be his?
When Alex was twenty-four, he entered a rather complex relationship with a single mother, her son only six years old at the time. She worked in the music industry and home-schooled him due to their sporadic travelling – his father had been out of the picture since he was very young, so she and her child were even closer than most mothers and sons.
This woman dabbled in drugs occasionally for recreational purposes – Alex understood it to be an escape for her. Their fling began when he shared his coke with her one night, finding there to be a connection, and not just because of their high. They slept together and it was the beginning of several long months of sex, drugs, and growing ever-closer to her and her son. The pair were a little more than friends-with-benefits, but never in love. Never ‘together.’ Neither could commit… through fear or just not wanting to. But Alex doted on her son and became a huge part of his life for a while. The three of them seemed to just amble along like a fake family. And it was actually quite lovely, for a time. Just what Alex needed, though it made him ache for a child of his own.
It was near perfect.
Until Alex fucked up.
Often, he would get high when she slept over and chose not to do it with him. She would sleep and he would snort. One night, he left out a small clear bag of his ecstasy pills, passing out in a stupor before he could store them safely; something he rarely forgot to do. Alex had promised to watch over her son that morning, as she had things to do, but Alex barely awake when the child arose. He got to the ecstasy pills before Alex even noticed they were still out – and subsequently had a heart attack.
It was only Alex’s quick reactions that saved the fitting child and got him to a hospital, but his mother was understandably not thankful for this.
She screamed at Alex that evening once her son was stable, tearing him apart for almost killing him, her baby, her whole world. Alex’s guilt was something that ‘consumed’ seemed too small a word to describe. He was completely heartbroken; he loved that boy, would never do a thing to intentionally hurt him.
The mother kept the story away from the press once popular music magazines caught snippets of why there had been ambulances on the tour, and Alex’s involvement in it was near enough erased. She didn’t want her child’s face and name plastered all over the internet, and she didn’t want a damn thing to do with Alex (or drugs) ever again. And a story like that would keep her forever tied to him. Hopeless Records got involved, helped she and Alex form a lie about some unknown person from the ensemble tour leaving drugs lying around (not on the All Time Low bus), to save Alex’s career and the band’s image, and keep his now ex-fling happy. She cut all contact and threatened Alex to stay away from her son, not even allowing the guilt-ridden man to say goodbye to the child he’d fallen in love with over her.
Alex entered a period of sleeping with anyone and everyone after the incident left him completely devastated. He had been promiscuous before, but this time, he was almost always drunk and/or high, and he wasn’t opposed to sleeping with fans. He lost count of the amount of All Time Low ‘groupies’ he fucked. They were never under-age, but he targeted them because they were often easier than seeking someone out in a bar after a show. It was too much effort for how depressed he was – he just wanted to fuck and forget. Rumours of it circulated the internet, but he ignored them, as did his record label, but none of it helped All Time Low’s image.
Slowly, though, that faded to black. He got a hold of himself again, though it took a while. He got better. As better as he could manage be. He totalled that he had slept with around a hundred-odd people in his lifetime, with the number increasing every time he felt too sad or just wanted a little fun.
Alex had suffered from anxiety his entire life, but was only after everything happened with the boy and his bouts of using sex to cover his emotions that Alex got diagnosed with something else – Histronic Personality Disorder (HPD). He was told it was on a more minor level, but he was still a sufferer, paired with a mild sex addiction. Read more about HPD here.
To this day, Alex struggles with everything that’s happened to him, but he tries not to let it swallow his life up. Sometimes he fails.
JOHN/ALEX HISTORY
In August of 2014, Alex began hooking up with The Maine frontman, John O’Callaghan. They grew closer over the following months, friendship blossoming when Alex went to stay in Arizona for a while that autumn, and then making their relationship official in February 2015 and announcing it to social media and their friends March 2015.
They helped each other. They healed each other.
Things were plain sailing until, that October, Alex finally admitted to John that he was in love with him. John panicked and left the house for several hours, returning to an upset Alex to say he loved him too. For Alex, the most blissful week of his entire life followed… until John sat him down, telling him things were too overwhelming, and that it didn’t feel right – he didn’t love him, and he felt they should spend some time apart. Crushed, Alex fell into a pit of depression. He tried to cover it with his old ways, partying and sex, but he was often drunk and never far from any sort of drug he could get his hands on. John had to watch from a distance as Alex slowly destroyed himself.
Finally, John realised he was in fact in love with Alex, but talking to him was impossible. Every time he tried, Alex was high, and talked nonsense until he grew hysterically upset. And in turn, John couldn’t handle that.
It was only when Alex took things too far and ended up in hospital on an overdose that John finally came to see him, but Alex screamed and got so upset that John thought it best he just leave again. Days after being released, Alex hadn’t learned his lesson. He overdosed again – purposefully this time. It resulted in a heart attack but he was taken to hospital a second time and now, months later, has went on to make a full recovery despite refusing therapy or rehab afterwards.
He never told John that he tried to kill himself with that second overdose. He didn’t think he needed to know. But Alex still battles his demons daily, despite finally going steady with John and getting his life a little more on track. His addictions taunt him. His fans and family and friends don’t know just how bad things were, either. They knew he had a bit of an addiction going on, knew that he’d went to hospital for taking it too far, but didn’t know it was a heart attack. Didn’t know he wanted to die that night. It was too upsetting – Alex didn’t see the need to let them all know.
He can’t give into everything though. He won’t. It would kill him for real this time.
the interview !!
*answer the first two questions ic or ooc! these do not have to have lengthy answers. a few sentences will do just fine!
how hard is your character trying to keep this a secret?: since alex has a variant of secrets… he very much wants all of them to stay on the down-low. but he would be most devastated if people knew just how much of a wreck he was in his personal life because he tries so hard to seem positive and like a good influence.
how would your character react if the secret got out to everyone?: he would be crushed, embarrassed, humiliated, angry… you name a negative emotion, he’d probably feel it. alex can be a dramatic boy at the best of times and he’s still kind of fragile so anything major could push him back towards the addictions that call to him so loudly.
are you okay with your character being talked about on the gossip blog?: yes!
