Evaluation:
This project has been a rollercoaster if I’m being honest. I have really enjoyed working with Katherine and Kieran but I think that we all agree that next time maybe we don’t work as a group as even though as friends it’s great, the three of us have comping skills as our main strength we decided that maybe if we support each other and do separate projects.
Anyway, I really feel that I have learnt so much from this project I am happy with the overall product, I know for a fact that I have learnt some valuable lessons throughout this. I think that the pre-production work really opened my eyes, such as writing the script, dealing with actors and other things.
I was a bit disappointed with a few things in the project such as the filming process and mainly the fact that I didn’t use Nuke. I used nuke to test out some footage but not for the final thing. I found myself more focused on the glitches and the overall edit of the trailer than advancing my Nuke skills.
Next project I think I want to tone down my production side and work on just one or two shots and comp them in nuke as this is something I missed in this work. Overall though, I am happy with how we worked as a team as we didn’t have any drama between the three of us, only with external circumstances.
I’m sad to be finishing second year as it feels as if it has gone very quickly but I’m excited for the future and third year to develop my skills even more.

Final Product
Here’s the finished Product:

I’m super happy how this looks and I think overall this has turned into a decent trailer. I know there’s a few things which I’d change already but overall I’m happy with this.

Geraint List:
On hand in day, we all were pretty happy with how everything was shaping up. So Kieran and I decided to speak to Geraint about how we could improve our work and he gave us this list:
Kieran had graded his shots but sadly had to head home, so I worked through the list improving as much as I could. I also got Geraint to teach me some Adobe Audition to improve the sound editing. This did help out quite a bit and I think that this made the trailer a lot better too.

3rd Year Short Film Help:
As apart of my FMP I said I wanted to branch out and help out some other people with their compositing. Jack introduced me to some 3rd years which needed help with a few shots of their film. I found this an extremely fun task to do as it was quite challenging. I added these into my submission files but they asked if I didn’t put the shots anywhere for confidential reasons. I wish I had a little more time on these shots but overall I’m pretty happy with how they ended up!

Flat instead of 3D:
So, unfortunately, when I asked Connor to send me a new .obj version of the render he didn’t have time to finish off the texturing in time for me to do what I wanted with the file. So we decided that as I didn’t have much time left that I’d just use a 2D image instead of his 3D model. But I want to visit this project in the future so I will definitely make the best out of this.

Kath bug:
On deadline day, we all met around 10:30 to finish off our shots and to do the end of the edit and colour grade and tweak the sound. Sadly Katherine woke up and ended up being sick. It was very unfortunate that this happened as she was truly crushed as she wanted to be able to finish her shots off. Kieran and I insited that she went home and she’s never sick and clearly was not doing okay. Kieran and I decided to finish the project together which went well!

Person in the Abos:
One of the shots which I worked on was a shot with our actress Coral, in the ‘Broken Abos’, this was a tricky shot which we worked on as I wasn’t very sure how I wanted it to look. Myself and Katherine worked on this until we figured out a good version. Where Coral glitched on the screen and there was an error message in the background stating that the Abos wasn’t working.
I also decided to add a hidden element too, when we were making this the short film, this version of the Abos which this character went in was a fake fabricated version by the police to track down criminals who were trying to re-activate it. So to nod t this I added a faint message in the background which says, “You made a mistake coming here.” I think that this just adds an extra layer and also re-watch value to the video.
Here’s the finished version of the shot:

Here’s the second version which is indented to show more caos than what was teased in the first clip which is featured in the trailer.

When we went to show Tom our edit the day after Bank Holiday Monday he had quite a bit to say about it but these were the main points:
More intense sound effects
Make them louder

I think that these were great and I think that using these was a brilliant idea by us as a group and they’ve really enhanced the look of the trailer.

Here’s our 3rd rendition of our edit. I like this but still, think there’s more we can do on each shots and enhance the sounds.

Edit Meeting 2
When returning from germany we decided to look at these trailers which we deicded we wanted to base our edit on:
youtube
A quiet place
youtube
Bird Box
The main idea behind these trailers is to use their sound effects to build up a dramatic atmosphere and to put the viewer on edge. The absence of background music in certain parts draws the audience in. Our aim with our trailer is to try to create something similar to this.
Here’s an edit which we created as a group. Kieran took the lead as he had a clear vision and I helped out with certain points. I am quite happy with how this is looking and can’t wait to build up on it all.

Edit Meeting 1
Before Katherine and myself go to Germany for FMX we had a quick meeting with Kieran about what we wanted the trailer to look like. As over the easter holiday we all had been working hard on our shots and sections of the trailer so we wanted to put it all together. We decided that the initial edit which we’d done needed a lot of changes. So while in Germany we decided to come up with new changes and re-group to create a new edit with our new ideas.

Just to double check my design idea I made this but we all agreed to get rid of tom in the background.

While I was still devloping the introductory video, this is where I was deciding how I wanted the shots of the character which was played by Coral into the Abos. I sent this to the group and we all agreed that we thought that Tom’s video shouldn’t be on the screen. I respected this and decided to change my ideas.

New Tom Shot:
Here’s a new version of our Abos. Connor took our inspirations and created this. He still needs to texture it and render it out. Hopefully, we will be able to do our goal design and I can maybe loop back to the 3D idea.
Here are a few conceppts of what I want my shot to look like:
This is using the old design within the video. But when I spoke to multiple people about this we all agreed that using a white background like our inspiration was a better idea;

Glitch Effects:
As we wanted to have a Broken Abos look. We decided to look for a few ways to get some good resources to get a look.

This is a video Katherine foudn which is where we got the look for our glitches effects.
Below is a few examples of where we learnt how to create them and a couple of examples of inspirations:

When working on GUI I had an idea I wanted to test out. I used the background of which we previously had of the other model. So I decided to mess about doing some motion graphics on Tom. I don’t think I like the look of this but wanted to add to show an idea I had!
