made the mistake of checking dune twitter and all i can say is frank herbert himself would be astounded by the misogyny because tell my why people are pitting irulan and chani against each other. why are they turning it into a contest. and for god's sake why are they determining the winner based on who a random man wanted to fuck more. this is peak pick me behavior and both of these women - book and movie versions alike- would be appalled and disappointed. shame on all of you

Ok this is what I think the biopics will be like for each Beatle:
John will be so troubled but in a really charming way and Julian will be mentioned but briefly and they’ll make it seem like John was just too busy to be a present father (Paul will make up for it in a vomit inducingly cheesy way). His eating disorder, heroin addiction and other internal struggles (self-esteem, sexuality, maybe even gender,…) will go unmentioned or brushed over jokingly like haha he tossed Brian off, don’t we all at that age. He’ll be the cool and funny older brother & later genius who just couldn’t be confined within a band. They won’t have the guts to call his bullshit and therefore will automatically brush over his kinder and vulnerable sides. He’ll be reduced to a knock off version of the tortured artist blueprint. They’ll never pick up on his pathetic wet dog vibe
Paul will be the charming good guy who’s all in with the band. No mention of how he fucked over Jane and every other girl until Linda; he’ll be a musical genius, too, but in a prince of the people sort of way. They’ll loooove that he stopped eating meat, woke king!!!! Linda will be brushed over by making her into his soulmate wifey who finally helps the charming playboy with a heart of gold settle down. His depression and alcohol problem won’t be mentioned/reduced to feeling a little sad. He’ll be a little bossy sometimes but they won’t ever get it right how fucking annoying he could be. Straighter than a ruler. John’s brother, almost biologically. No homo. They’ll find a way to make the twink who fucked the entire population and had an ego bigger than Neptune into a straight feminist
George will be the indie underground smart Beatle and people on tik tok will start posting thirst traps of the actor with the caption “they don’t make em like this anymore” and then complain about real-George’s teeth. He’ll be so spiritual and smart and he won’t have an affair with his best friend’s wife at all and if he does it’ll be because of some spiritual insight, not because that man couldn’t keep it in his pants for 5 seconds. I’m deadly afraid of the colourful drug scenes where he’ll hallucinate god. He’ll be the perfect boyfriend and Pattie will be played by Sidney sweeney or something. They won’t take a side with the whole George Or Paul debate during the breakup, but George will be too focused on other things to want to stay in the Beatles. They won’t mention the three billion songs John&Paul deemed unworthy. They’ll never do the grudges my man held justice. No one could
Ringo will be the funny guy who luckily survived his childhood and found his passion through a kind nurse giving him his drumsticks. He’ll play an incredible drum solo at 8 years old on his hospital bed frame the first time he ever holds those sticks. He won’t be in gangs, he won’t beat his wife half to death, he won’t have drugs and alcohol problems. He’ll be peace and love from age 0. He’ll be slightly stupid and he’ll mention octopuses too much. They’ll never get it right how he was truly the eldest and how much his vote and opinion actually counted within the band and how much the boys wanted him in the band and admired him. He won’t be a sort of glue to the band. He won’t marry a teenager he met when she was 16 and he 22. He’ll be a weird version of Ken from the Barbie movie, his job will be Drum. They’ll flatten a severely nuanced and layered man to a sheet of paper with the word ‘beat’ on it
I am too afraid to even think about what they will do to Eppy
Oh and each and every one of them will have way too pretty teeth and I am already furious. I want them to have British men in the 1960s teeth. Give me British teeth and jerking off together

Cousins Paul and Cherry
everyone say thank you @sunshine-on-marz for their contributions and listening to me for months! youre a rockstar<3
-They’re cousins through their moms who are sisters. Their moms aren’t like super close, but they still talk a fairly often
-Their dads are both lawyers, but Paul’s is a corporate lawyer and is gone for work A LOT while Cherry’s works local
-On the topic of their dads, their entire “friendship” is based on “that wife? amirite?” jokes and business talk. They’re so boring TRUST
-The Valance’s live like a street over from the Holden’s
-PS im listening to Run Run Brother rn and Joshua Boone you’re a superstar
-Paul’s parents and Cherry’s mom aren’t Tulsa natives, they’re from the West Coast (I don’t know where yet but Paul just has West Coast energy and it’ll come back into play for his and Bev’s friendship)
-Cherry’s mom, Irene, met Cherry’s dad at a college party, and they moved back to Tulsa, where he’s from, when they got married
-Paul’s family moved to Tulsa when Paul was like four (sidenote there IS another version of this where they move when Paul’s like 12 but that’s for another day)
-Paul and Cherry are both only childs, so they grew up pretty close, despite the 3 year age gap (they have the same age gap as Darry and Soda)
-Paul’s dad was pretty absent, he’s pretty much ALWAYS gone I wasn’t joking, and for the first part of Paul’s life, his mom was hooked on drugs. The way only rich people can get away with, so she was very mentally and emotionally absent. Safe to say that Paul stayed with his aunt a lot because he wasn’t being taken care of the way he should be otherwise
-This means that he was around baby and toddler Cherry A LOT (hint: this is why they are so close)
-PS listening Little Brother rn and Joshua Boone you’re THE superstar
-Cherry would paint Paul’s nails and make him play with her. He’d complain about it like a motherfucker, but he’d let her do it anyways. One time, she painted his nails while the whole family was over for a big dinner. When he showed his dad, his dad lost his shit and told him he didn’t want no fairy for a son and to get that shit off his hands. Paul didn’t let Cherry do his nails for a long time after that.
-Anytime their parents have to go on a trip, they get left with the other’s family up until they were both well into their teens. Paul was trusted alone at 15, Cherry wasn’t until she 16, but she started staying at Marcia’s more and more after turning 14 and only stayed with Marcia after Paul left for college. She did NOT want to be left alone with her aunt and uncle, so in Marcia we trust❤️
-Sometimes Cherry would stay over when Paul already had friends over, and his friends looooved to mess with Cherry
-One of these times was when the boys were all around 13 and Cherry was 10. Paul’s mom let her have Marcia over since Paul would be busy with his friends. The day was spent with the boys teasing the girls because they’re little assholes. Paul, on the other hands, he is over it. Why do y’all care about his dumb little cousin and her friend? Let’s go play tag football guys c’mon!
-This doesn’t include Darry btw. Cherry actually liked Darry quite a lot because he pretty much left her alone
-Matter of fact, tween/very early teen Paul and Darry would round up Ponyboy, Sodapop, and Cherry and bring them to the park a lot. It was the only way Darry could hang out some days because he had to watch his brothers while his parents worked.
-Their moms (mainly Cherry’s) made them take god awful family photos together. They hateddddd to see Irene pull a camera out. She made them take photos together after football games too bc “Oh look how cute y’all are in your uniforms!”
-They act annoyed but they both have at least one of those pictures framed in their bedrooms
-Speaking of football, Paul walked Cherry at homecoming. She was one of the youngest on the court and felt kinda awkward about that, but her and Paul spent the whole day whispering to each other and cracking up.
-Paul actually got into a fight or two defending Cherry. She gets mad at him and doesn’t talk to him for a few weeks because she hates fights. She gets the sentiment, but she can’t get behind it.
-Paul also set Bob and Cherry up together. Bob was like a little brother to Paul, aka he trailed after Paul like a puppy and Paul liked the kid enough to take him in under his wing. Cherry and Bob were already friends, but Paul gave them a little push
-Paul would draw Cherry pictures for her to color in
-Paul and Cherry told each other a lot, but he never told her about him and Darry. He was scared that she wouldn’t be okay with it. What he doesn’t know is that Cherry knows him well enough to see how he comes alive when Darry is around. Paul’s a pretty mellow person (pre Bob death whoops) and is actually very quiet (#thanksmomanddad), but when Darry’s around, he’s like a whole new person. Paul doesn’t need to tell her for her to know there’s something there. She’ll keep it to herself, though
-That’s why she also is one of the first to know when something’s happened between them. Paul’s more broody after his and Darry’s breakup/fall out. He gets plain mean.
-Cherry tries to talk to him about it, but he snaps at her and they end up fighting pretty bad because they no longer see the world the same. Used to, they agreed that the whole soc vs greaser thing was stupid, but now Paul’s spitting the same venom as the rest of the socs.

MY FAV DUNE PT 2 COSTUMES
And my (mostly visual/aesthetic) reasoning
(In no particular order)
Ok starting off STRONG with this Irulan look:
Tumblr media
It’s simple, it’s classy, it looks comfy AND elegant. I love the beadwork on the headpiece and how it’s Bene Gesserit-adjacent but you can still completely see her face and hair. The light colors look good on her and that collar made me question it for just long enough to make it better.
Tumblr media
Next up is Jessica’s early sayyadina look, and I loooooove this robe. The earth colors are nice, I like how it kinda blends in with the sietch while emphasizing her eyes, and the fabric is very rough and functional looking while still being beautiful. Mostly I’m psyched about the patterns in the weaving (I think it’s woven) and the way that creates continuity with her tattoos.
I had trouble finding good pictures for this, but
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Everything about this scene was GORGEOUS. I swear I didn’t breathe for the first ten minutes of the movie, and these Harkonnen uniforms were part of it. The colors here are amazing and make the black look so harsh and unnatural compared to the sand and rocks and the Fremen clothing. Their shiny helmets are terrifying and sterile and buglike and I am living for it. (Little me would have gotten nightmares)
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Obviously we’ve all acknowledged Lady Margot’s amazing dress, but it’s just That Good. The structure! The open shoulders and low neck + hood! The color! Sinister and sexy. And despite the fact that I loved the color, I might love this even more in the black and white scenes because it shows off the construction so well and the opera glasses honestly tie it all together.
Ok bringing back Jessica because she Doesn’t Miss:
Tumblr media
I loooove this. The gold printing (?) around the hood might be my favorite part, and the beads under the collar are awesome without weighing down her whole face like the outfit she wears for most of the film with all the metal on the forehead. I also like how the structure and design of it is extra similar to Reverend Mother Mohiam, with the giant rectangular hood, but the color and the face beading are actually more reminiscent of the gown she wears when the Atreides arrive on Arrakis in part one.
A shoutout for Feyd-Rautha’s armor in the duel:
Tumblr media
Idk I just really like how shiny it is. All the Harkonnen stuff reminds me of bugs (those evil looking shiny black beetles) I like how this is actually very much like a stillsuit and really similar to what Paul’s wearing, but more evil and shiny.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Last but CERTAINLY not least is just Chani’s blue scarf. BOY does this pull its visual weight. Like symbolism and meaning aside, it’s such a necessary piece of color in the all the desert scenes, and adds visual interest to what is a largely beige movie. In tons of the scenes most of the color is bright bright blue in the characters’ eyes and this scarf. And I think it adds a lot of joy and lightness to Chani’s appearance, which obviously symbolically changes as she does.
I just love costumes! This was a visually stunning film! I’m feeling very happy!

i humbly write to beseech you to pummel me with your thoughts on rhaenicent
I loooove Rhaenicent conceptually it's so much better than the estranged stepdaughter arc in the books. I also think they have some of the best dialogue in the show because the writers love them so so much. Does the dialogue make sense in the context of the plot happening immediately before and after the scenes they have together? No! Does the bitterly-tender-lesbian-divorcées plotline seem to be taking place in a different show from the rest of HOTD, which is about their two families actively trying to kill each other and often succeeding — deaths that they should technically be attributing to each other by dent of the way war works? Yeah! Do I care? Not that much! And even if I did, would I let it get in the way of a nice nasty friends-to-lovers-to-enemies arc? Like, I've read fic where Hermione Granger and Tom Riddle fuck. Who am I to harp on whether the characters on the R-rated Dragon Tales show are exhibiting literary realism?
Anyway I can't waaaaaaaait for S3 to go whole hog on the "Rhaenyra the Cruel" storyline so that she can complete her evolution into Fantasy Paul Atreides and Alicent can have a total crisis about which of the two tyrants that she's brought into the world — both of whom she loves dearly — she has to kill. The whole story is centrally about mothers sacrificing their children, with the idea that political leadership and parenthood are intrinsically incompatible (Viserys is trying to be a good father but fails in his pursuit of being a good king, Alicent tries to be a good mother but fails in her pursuit of being a good queen, Rhaenyra tries to — you see where I'm going. Ironically the only one who doesn't seem subject to this is Daemon, whose daughters have 0 scenes with him and hence can't object one way or another to his parenting style, but who seems to have escaped the dynastic curse by not trying to be a dad OR a king. Failhusbands #FTW.) And I think it would be the coup de grace on Alicent's storyline if she did betray Aegon for Rhaenyra, in an effort to escape the machinations of politics, only for it to backfire catastrophically. Because:
(1) Rhaenyra is no longer the girl who would have helped Alicent run away from all this. She was lost to Alicent and Cole (who is Alicent's foil and their affair is so obviously an awful wonderful voyeuristic attempt for them both to fuck Past Rhaenyra) the moment Viserys told her she was fucking Dragon Paul Atreides. That's it, game over. You can't love a Messiah without ending up on the altar or the stake. And:
(2) Alicent and Rhaenyra are both arrogant and entitled women, but they're arrogant in different ways; Rhaenyra thinks she's entitled to rule a continent because of her noble parentage and quasi-magic bloodline, and Alicent thinks that she's entitled to rule a continent because she's morally superior to everyone else at court. They are both wrong about this, but they can't let go of that idea without dissolving what's been the basis of their identity for the past 20 years. These girls were raised by the Red Keep. Even when Alicent goes on her spiritual journey to realize that Politics Is Bad, she has staggering gall to talk about being "free," as if it isn't slightly fucked-up that she can just start a war that kills thousands of peasants and fuck off to Essos once she's not having fun anymore. Like. Sorry? Aemond is successfully executing a war that started the moment you crowned Aegon, knowing damn well Rhaenyra (and Daemon, moreover) were not going quietly, and you're blaming Aemond for the fact that people are dying? Baby girl, you did not give a stone cold shit that Aemond was a bit of a maniac until he removed you from the small council (which I honestly didn't think you cared about, since you haven't made a political move all season). And then you wrote him off to Gwayne as like "bro :( look at my horrible awful bloodthirsty son," but BABY YOUUUUUU STARTED THE WAR!!
(Also: youuuuuuu went full Cersei and demanded to carve one of the Velaryons' eyes out when they hurt Aemond by accident, plus also tried to carve out Rhaenyra's eye with a knife in full view of the court when that didn't work, so like — maybe we can think about where Aemond might have learned to use violence as a first resort?)
All this to say that both of them have been poisoned by the Red Keep and I don't think they would know how to interact with each other outside of that circumstance. They've been doing politics since they were teenagers, and their identities have been built around that fact. And even when Alicent realizes this, it still isn't enough to change her into someone different! She is Alicent Targaryen, née Hightower, and Targaryen women do not fucking let go. They are doomed to fight each other forever until one or both of them die. Which is sexy and awesome and I personally look forward to watching.

911 Tag Game
rules: answer your opinion on these nine topics, then tag nine other people to give their opinion as well
I was tagged by several beloved mutuals, and it took me way too long to finalize my answers! special shoutout to @chimneyz for coming up with this great tag game 💖, and thank you to @bucksbignaturals, @itsametaphorok, and @theotherbuckley for tagging me!
Favorite character: Buck!!! he's SO BLORBO ahhh
Character you relate to the most: also Buck. He’s constantly an ADHD mood, he cares so deeply it hurts, and while my struggles in life have been super different from his, seeing Buck’s journey and working to overcome obstacles is just so relatable!!!!
Favorite episode: Chimney Begins is episode of ALL time.
Hottest take: a minor one but I feel Veronica, the woman Buck and then Albert dated in s4, gets a bad rap. We met her on a disastrous first date and she was absolutely seeing all of Buck’s actions in the harshest way possible, but also we see that episode after having gotten to know him and his heart of gold. We know he isn’t trying to body shame her, but they don’t know each other, so she is going to be wary of this man. And it’s a very human instinct that once you get off on the wrong foot with somebody, little things can start building up - so she misinterprets one comment of his, and starts seeing him in an uncharitable light, and so she assumes the worst of the next comment too. I see people making sweeping judgments about her personality, but we pretty clearly see a difference in Veronica in her later scenes. She’ll heartily agree with Taylor’s comment about not wanting to cater to a man’s ego, but it didn’t have the rude tone that a lot of her comments had in the scene where we first met her. And idk given we have never seen Buck handle a first date without some kind of awkwardness or hiccup, I can sympathize with how she didn’t get the best first impression of him! Buck is sooo easy to warm up to and then endear himself, but it can take a little warming up.
Favorite Lone Star character: Carlos or Paul! It would probably be Paul if the show could GIVE HIM MORE SCREENTIME but since we’ve mainly gotten crumbs over five whole seasons, Carlos is able to stay in the running for LS fave.
Favorite ship: I’ve been bewitched by Bucktommy!!! I’m a huge multishipper and polyshipper but if you make me pick just one…
Most underrated character: hmm so obviously he’s a main and the fandom generally loves him, but I feel Chimney doesn’t get enough appreciation. He gets put in the comic relief box that he may have described for himself, but Hen shut that shit down when he said it because it is not even close to the full picture. Chim is hilarious of course, but he deserves more credit for all the other things he is too! In the show, definitely Karen. Give us more of this rocket scientist, PLEASE!!!
Most underrated ship: Michael and David are sooo underrated! I know we didn’t have them on the show for long enough (thanks, antivax nonsense 🙄) but what we got is such a good love story! Also on Lone Star, more Paul/Carlos or Paul/Carlos/TK, please!!!
One thing you would love to see:
A character driven plot I got my hopes up during the hiatus before s8 was conflict between Hen and Chim, and that first episode really seemed like they might delve into what it looked like for some familial tension! Let our ride or dies fight and have an emotional storyline, and also explore new ground that they haven’t before!!!
And then for thinking of emergencies (since so many of us are here for the soap opera level character plots, but LBR that this show is on the air because of the mass appeal of Angela Bassett and the show that has ridiculous 911 calls like a baby in the pipes!) Something my wife has pointed out when watching with me and I loooove as an idea is how cool to watch a bowling alley fire would be, from a fire science perspective. They can be challenging and dangerous with things like the solvents used to treat the wood, both what’s saturating the floors and bowling lanes but also what might be stored that employees are using still. They’re flammable and also can be toxic, which could then aerosolize. And then the layout of bowling alleys like we saw a little in the show for the woman trapped in the pin machine… those void spaces in the floors and walls and overhead would be trickyyy for airflow feeding the fire and leading to it jumping. She has done so much research into fires and disasters as it’s a special interest of hers so she can and will keep going about what they could be, and I have been FULLY convinced about now really wanting to see this. Such good potential for an eventful call!!!
Because it took me a while to respond, I’ve lost track of who has and hasn’t done this yet! If I tag you and you’ve done it, I’d love to see your responses. @gaytommykinard, @bucksboobs, @diazsdimples, @thatmexisaurusrex, and @spacetimeconundrum!

a list of my favorite spy school funny moments/quotes
- “What the heck are powdered nutgalls?” Chip asked. “It’s what you get after riding a horse at high speed for an hour,” Mike grumbled, gingerly adjusting the seat of his pants.
- Jemma Emma Dilemma
- “Or Agent Kumquat,” Chip added, and then both of them cracked up.
- Alexander glared at him, still smarting from his insult. “See if I ever buy you campfire treats again.” he said, and then stormed out himself.
- “Not necessarily. I could like them as a friend.” “First of all, you don’t have friends.”
- “Parcheesi?! I loooove Parcheesi.”
- “I lost the arm and the leg, but not the eye.” “Oh, how’d you lose that?” “A bug flew into it.” “Uhh, you don’t lose your eye if a bug flies into it.” “You do if it’s your first day with a hook.😒”
- “Although believe it or not, Nefarious actually got off easy. According to his file, his folks named his little sister Placenta.”
- “If there’s one thing I know, it’s women.” Murray exclaimed.
- Now that he had transformed into Hot Murray,
- “How good is your vision?” Mike asked. “It’s off the charts,” Erica replied. “I eat a lot of carrots.”
- “Supposedly the guy was a big jerk, and the peasants all rose up against him and burned him alive, and now his ghost roams the property, looking for a… fire extinguisher or something like that.”
- He was at the base of an extremely tall elm tree, speaking into a radio microphone and seeming far more lucid than usual—although the moment he saw Chip and Jawa, he went right back into his doddering act. “Skip and Yaya!”
- “Dad, I’m going to need you to act like you have no idea what’s going on.” “What?” Alexander asked, confused. “I don’t understand.”
- “Wow! Our pool at spy school didn’t have water slides.” “Really? What did it have?” “Bacterial contamination.😕”
- “So, this girlfriend of Mike’s…is he super into her, or just kind of into her?” “He’s mentioned marriage. 🙂”
- “I think plenty!” The principal said defensively. “My mind is a constant whirlwind of thinkery!”
- “Erica!” Alexander gasped, mortified this had happened in front of so many people. “We do not spit on our grandfathers in this family!”
- Paul Lee leaned close to me and whispered, “Has he uh..uh…had some sort of, um, brain injury?” “No.” I replied. “This is how he was born, I think.”
- “Erica! You’re driving on the wrong side of the street!” “I’m not driving on the wrong side.🙄” Erica argued, gunning the engine. “They are!”
- Chip pegged him in the face with another pair of boxers. “Warren, stop playing with my underwear, you pervert.”
- “Now? Here?” “National security is at stake.” “It was at stake this morning when I was having waffles in the cafeteria. We couldn’t have discussed this then??”
- “All these men are itching for a fight. And since I’m the alpha male here, they’re going to come for me first!” Alexander said. “The alpha male.?🤨” Catherine asked, amused. “Yes! It won’t look good for them to attack women or children, so they’ll attack me first!” “And me.” Murray seconded nervously. “I’m definitely the beta male here!”
- “Neither does Jawa. Why aren’t you suspicious of him?” “Jawa’s a freak of nature. You’re just a freak.”
- “Hey! Where’s my breakfast?” The woman socked him in the face. Murray reeled backward. “Okay! No tip for you!” He said, then collapsed on the floor, unconscious.
- I quickly replaced the skull and wiped my hand on my shirt. “This is sooo not how I wanted to spend my first day in Paris.” OKAY DRAMA QUEEN?
- “West Virginia?” Claire Hutchins called from a few rows up. “I thought that was all strip mines and inbred hillbillies.” “You heard wrong.” Chip shot back. “As you can see, there’s plenty of wilderness here. And the locals are far less inbred than the royal family.”
- “Do you not care one wit for your country?” “No! I care many wits for my country!”
- “What have you done?!” He screamed at us. “What have you done?!” “Well, it’s obvious,” I said. “We’ve blown up a rebel minivan.”
- Murray sighed. “I know you’ve got issues with Ben because he turned you into half the man you used to be.” (About Joshua)
- “Talk about being heavily armed.” Mike said. (Also about Joshua)

NAtLA first impressions (eps 1 & 2)
Here are my thoughts as someone who has been a superfan of the original series since 2007 (spoiler-free first, then spoilers below)!
Honestly, I'm feeling pretty middle of the road about this adaptation so far. I like a lot of the costuming, and some of the actors are good, while others have felt a bit lackluster. There's also some characterization choices I didn't like too much for certain characters (which I will get into in the spoiler sections below). The score is definitely not as good as the original series - I don't particularly like the new elements of the score, and when themes and motifs from the original score are used, I feel like they aren't used enough. The bending, while better than the 2010 version, still feels a bit fake and clunky, as do a lot of the special effects. There's also a problem with a reliance on exposition dialogue, moreso in the first ep than the second.
Now we'll get into the spoiler section. Don't read below this if you do not wanna be spoiled.
EP 1: "Aang"
What I liked:
Getting to see a bit more of the Air Nomads (which makes the genocide feel even more devastating)
The design of the Southern Air Temple felt very warm and inviting - I liked that there were lots of trees and whatnot
The added details about the Sozin purposefully allowing news of the war to be leaked to the Earth Kingdom to throw everyone off their trail of planning to attack the Air Nomads
Making the comet a special event for the Air Nomads, which brings them all together at the Southern Air Temple for Sozin's attack to happen
I like that Wolf Cove was actually called Wolf Cove (since it's never name dropped in the actual show)
Zuko and Iroh did a good job - I think Dallas is capturing Zuko's energy pretty well, and while Paul's Iroh feels a bit different than the OG, he's still doing a good job
What I was not so keen on:
Yep... I really didn't like that Aang didn't purposefully run away, and instead went to "clear his head" after Monk Gyatso told him he was the Avatar, fully intending to return before getting caught in the storm.
They really weren't kidding about removing Sokka's sexism. Instead of Aang being released bc of Katara's anger at this, they just happen upon the iceberg, and somehow while trying to waterbend their canoe closer she waterbends the iceberg open behind her??
Exposition dump from Gran Gran... and her basically just straight up telling Aang to his face "You're the last airbender! All your people are dead! And you're probably the Avatar too!" It all felt very wooden and definitely a bad change from how Aang realizes he's in the future in the OG series.
I had high hopes for a lot of the actors, and I hate to say it (especially considering Sokka's actor is likely not even indigenous at all), but Sokka has felt like the best actor so far. His lines come across a lot more naturally than Katara's and Aang's often do. Aang is alright, and of course looks and acts the part, but the way he speaks his lines sometimes feels too quick/unnatural. Sadly, I think Katara's acting has been the worst so far - in this episode I didn't see any of the emotion in her eyes that I felt like I should've been seeing. I will say I think she got a bit better in ep 2.
Aang, Katara, and Sokka just don't feel close. They never got time to go penguin sledding, to hang out with the village kids, etc. They still feel like strangers.
Speaking of, I guess Aang went out of the Avatar State by thinking about Gyatso? Again, that distance between him and the siblings (especially Katara) is glaring. Katara in general just seems to lack the spark she has in the OG.
EP 2: "Warriors"
What I liked:
Seeing the Fire Navy port - it felt very SEA-inspired, and that street food looked delicious lol.
Kyoshi Island being run by a woman (Suki's mom). Just makes more sense to me lol.
Suki - I looooved how they portrayed her as this kind of socially awkward character who wants to talk to Sokka but doesn't know how. It makes so much sense with her being isolated her whole life. I also felt like her and Sokka had quite a bit of chemistry.
The final Kyoshi battle was pretty cool
I kinda liked Zhao and Zuko both being at Kyoshi Island
Zuko's desperation to find Aang - he really felt like a kid to me in this ep with the acting choices Dallas made.
Strangely, I don't hate them nerfing the Avatar State a bit by making it to where Aang can only enter it when he's in an Avatar shrine. I didn't even realize it at first but the reason he goes into the Avatar State in the SAT is because Gyatso's skeleton was in Yangchen's shrine. I still prefer OG series Avatar State though.
I like that Kyoshi warns Aang with the vision about the Fire Nation's attack on the Northern Water Tribe. It gives him an incentive to get there faster instead of meandering.
What I was not so keen on:
Zhao seems to be a much less arrogant character here, at least outwardly. I know he was probably a bit cartoon villain-y in the OG series, but this dude just feels like another commander. Maybe that will change as I watch more. He's definitely conniving.
The goofy ass high beam lights from the Kyoshi statue's eyes
Kyoshi's characterization... This Kyoshi feels like the caricature all the casual fans perceive her to be (i.e. violence and strength are the best way, smite my enemies type of thing). I also didn't like how she just kept berating Aang for running away (which is weird that everyone keeps accusing him of this bc this version of Aang literally didn't even run away).
Aang is very driven to master the elements and defeat the Fire Lord in this version, which isn't necessarily a bad thing... But I feel like if anything, they could have at least kept it to where he ran away the night of the genocide, even if they didn't want to show him ignoring his responsibilities to go on adventures in the bulk of the show. A major part of Aang's character arc is him learning to accept his destiny and stop running/avoiding.
Once again, no Sokka sexism arc. This ep in the OG series was very important for him, but that's nonexistent here.
Once again, Katara's acting, while better than ep 1, feels like it's lacking emotion.
Overall, it's obviously better than the 2010 movie so far, and I enjoyed the eps to a degree, but there's still a lot of things that I wasn't super fond of. The changes that they seem to have made so far aren't too extreme yet, and I'm actually looking forward to seeing how far they end up deviating from the original show.
The whole time I was watching, I just couldn't stop thinking about how much better the original show is. I just kept missing the characters I knew and loved. Also, I still firmly believe this world and story truly works best in animation.

Building Blocks
Being a child of a Navy man means leaving those you care about behind. But not always forever…
I absolutely loooove this one. I hope you do too.
Tumblr media
Kittery, Maine Naval Housing Late October, 1973
The leaves crunched under her feet as she ran to the wooded area just past the last row of houses. She turned around and checked to see if anyone was watching her before she slipped past the big tree and kept running, her breath coming out in white puffs.
Stopping in front of the small, rather warped shed that her father had moved back into the woods for her to use as a fort, she turned the handle with cold fingers. Her mother would tut when she saw that she had once again forgotten her gloves.
“It’s fall now, Dana,” her mother had said many times recently. “You need to wear your gloves. And your hat.”
Whoops. She had forgotten the hat as well.
But it would be fine once she was inside the shed, as it was slightly warmer than outside.
She opened the door and let out a deep breath before stepping inside and taking off her backpack. Moving the two folding chairs and collapsible tv tray to the center of the space, she opened her backpack and took out the food and items she had brought with her.
Two chocolate Ding Dongs, a canteen full of water, and a bag of tortilla chips were placed on the now open tray. She had wanted to bring the Doritos as she was partial to them, but she knew her mother would notice if they and the Ding Dongs went missing.
The chairs opened and arranged, she sat down to wait, her mouth watering at the thought of biting into the chocolate treat in the foil wrapper.
A whistle sounded, the one she had taught him, and she looked out the open door to see him walking toward her. She grinned even as she felt her heart speed up, something it had been doing lately when she saw him, though she did not understand why.
“Hello there, Dana Scully,” he said with his lopsided smile, his hands in his jacket pockets.
“Hello to you, Fox Mulder,” she replied, suddenly feeling very nervous.
“Oh, Ding Dongs… those are my favorite,” he said as he stepped inside.
She knew they were. Of course she did.
“I was going to grab different chips, but…”
“You mean these?” he asked, pulling Doritos from his backpack and handing them to her. She grinned and nodded as he sat down, taking out his own canteen. “I know you like those.”
“I do.”
“Yeah.” He smiled at her as he picked up a Ding Dong, unwrapped it and handed it to her.
“Thanks,” she said, taking it from him and feeling her stomach jump when his fingers brushed hers.
“So what’s the plan for today?” he asked, unwrapping his own treat and taking a bite.
As they ate, she showed him the drawings she had made, discussing what she wanted to do, her nerves falling away as she spoke.
“Wow. It looks really good.”
“Thanks.”
“You’re the smartest person I know, the way you figure out all of those plans,” he said and she stared at him in disbelief, as she always did when he said stuff like that to her. “Even better than some of the boys in my class. And your brother for sure.” He smiled and she felt her cheeks getting warm.
“He doesn’t listen to me,” she said quietly.
“Because he’s dumb. Not smart like you. Come on, let’s get to work.”
They left the little shed and walked further into the woods where they had been building a treehouse over the summer. The other kids living on the base had been around to help when they were all out of school, but had since lost interest.
Some of the older boys, like Fox, who at eleven was two years older than her, had left because they had not wanted to listen to her ideas. They teased her and called her drawings and plans girlie and dumb.
“What’s girlie about it?” she had demanded, tears pricking at her eyes though she would not let them fall.
“Oh no, she’s getting mad,” Paul, one of the oldest boys had said while the others laughed. “Watch out for the tiny thing.”
“You shut up,” Dana had yelled and they had laughed even more.
“Let’s go. Who wants to be listening to a little girl anyway. We’ll make our own treehouse. Much better than this baby one.”
“Yeah, let’s go.”
And they had left, laughing and mocking her as they did.
All of them except for Fox, who had walked over and wordlessly picked up the paper Paul had crumbled and tossed on the ground. Fox had smoothed it out against his pant leg and handed it back to Dana.
“Where should we start?” he had asked and she had turned around to wipe her eyes so he would not see her tears.
As the weather began to change, they were the only two who continued to venture out into the woods, gathering fallen branches and bringing items they found at home to add to the treehouse.
Truth be told, the shed was better, but the treehouse required work and figuring things out like a puzzle. Dana loved puzzles and building things with her hands, something most other girls, including her older sister, did not want to do.
Fox, an only child, spent a lot of time on his own, exploring the woods or reading. Occasionally he joined the older boys, playing whatever sport was popular at the moment. It being fall, football was taking over and he was a good addition when they needed an extra body.
Paul had teased him when they first started playing, telling him he was spending too much time with Dana and calling her a baby. They had a fight, Paul gaining a black eye from it and Fox a busted lip, but after that, Paul never said anything to Fox about her.
Dana had been furious at first, telling Fox that fighting was stupid.
“What if he had knocked out your teeth? Or busted your head instead of your lip?”
“He wouldn’t. He’s bigger, but I’m faster. He’s lucky it was just his eye that I hit.”
“But, Fox-”
“He shouldn’t say things like that,” he had interrupted, staring at her with a serious expression. “Not about anyone, but especially about you. You’re a hundred times smarter than him and he knows it. He won’t bother you or talk about you anymore. I promise.”
And in that moment, when she had not been expecting it, not truly understanding what was happening, she had fallen in love for the first time.
“You know,” Fox said, as they climbed up the ladder they had made from pieces of scrap wood nailed to the tree. “I think we could maybe somehow connect this treehouse to the other tree there.” He pointed as Dana stood on the landing and followed his finger. “Do you think we could?”
“Mmm… maybe. If we…” She stepped closer and looked at the tree with its wide branches and thick trunk. “We could make a… like a bridge? I think it might be difficult, but I could draw something up tonight. What do you think?”
“I think it would be great. Make Paul eat his words.” He bumped his shoulder into her and she grinned.
“Yeah. It would.”
“Come on. It’ll be dark soon.”
When the light began to fade and her fingers had long since remembered how it felt to be warm, Fox had dropped the hammer back into the small toolbox.
“Well, it’s the most we can do for today.”
“Yeah,” she agreed, blowing on her hands to warm them.
They climbed down and walked back to the shed. They put away the chairs and tray, put on their backpacks, and walked out the door, closing it securely.
He walked her to her house and then waved as he walked away, whistling the whistle she had taught him once again. She watched him until he turned the corner and he was out of sight.
At her desk in the bedroom she shared with her sister, Melissa, she drew up plans to connect the trees and make a large treehouse. She was happy with how it turned out. Her eyes scanned the paper to look for any mistakes before she placed it into a protective folder to show Fox the next day.
_________________
She waited for him, Twinkies sitting on the table this time, but for the first time ever, he did not show up. When it got too dark to see, she used her flashlight to guide her way back home, her heart aching and tears clogging her throat.
Melissa was over at a friend's house and Dana was thankful she had the room to herself so she could cry without being seen.
After her cry, as she lay in the dark, she heard something hit her window. Looking over, she saw when it happened again. Getting up, she opened the window and looked down to find Fox standing on the lawn.
“I’m sorry I wasn’t there today,” he said, dropping the small rocks in his hands onto the ground.
“It doesn’t matter,” she said, not wanting him to know how much it had hurt her.
“It does. Can you come down? I need to talk to you.”
“You already said sorry.”
“Please, Dana,” he said softly and she nodded before she closed the window and left the bedroom.
She left out the back door and walked around the side of the yard, meeting him on the front lawn.
“I am sorry I wasn’t there today. I wanted to be, but there was a good reason.”
“What reason?”
“My dad got new orders,” he said, staring at her with sad eyes. “We’re leaving.”
“What?”
“Yeah,” he whispered. “My parents have known for a couple of days, but they just told me this afternoon.”
“You’re leaving? Where are you going?” she asked, tears clogging her throat again.
“Overseas. Japan.”
“Japan…” Dana breathed. “That’s so far away.”
“I know.”
“When are you leaving?”
“Two days.”
“Two days?” she asked, unable to hold back the tears that fell down her cheeks.
“They need my dad quickly. I don’t understand it all, but we leave in two days.”
“I… I don’t want you to go,” she whispered, wiping her face.
“I don’t want to go either.”
“But you have to,” she said, knowing how life worked in the Navy- you went where you were told without question.
“I have to,” he replied, nodding his head.
The front door opened and Dana’s mother stood on the threshold, surprised to find them both standing there.
“Fox? Is everything okay? Your parents are alright?”
“Yes, ma’am,” he said with a tight smile. “I… I didn’t meet up with Dana earlier and I came over to apologize.”
“Oh, well that was kind of you.”
“I have to get back home now,” he said, nodding at her mother and then looking at Dana. “I’ll see you tomorrow.”
“Yeah,” she whispered, nodding her head.
He turned around and walked in the direction of his house, never looking back at them.
“He’s such a nice boy,” her mother said and Dana began to cry, her hands covering her face. “Dana? What is it, honey?”
Dana ran to her mother and threw her arms around her waist, crying into the long sweater she wore that smelled of cinnamon.
___________
“We won’t finish the treehouse,” Dana said the next day as they stood staring at it.
“We could try to get as much done as we can,” he suggested and she shook her head.
“I don’t really feel like it,” she said softly.
“Me either. And I have to be home soon anyway,” he admitted. “I have to pack up my stuff. My mom said she could, but I want to be the one to do it.”
“I would too,” Dana whispered, thinking about someone else packing her most prized possessions and how much it would bother her.
“I hate that we won’t be able to try to connect those trees. I’m sure whatever you came up with would have done it.”
She looked at him and he stepped closer to her, hugging her for the first time ever. It stunned her for a second and then she was hugging him back, closing her eyes as she tried to memorize how it felt to have him so close.
He stepped back and let her go, smiling sadly as he let out a deep breath.
“See you tomorrow, Dana Scully.”
“Yeah. Tomorrow, Fox Mulder,” she said, forcing herself to not cry.
He inhaled and nodded before he walked away, the special whistle the last thing she heard.
____________
Dana’s whole family, along with a few other neighbors, stood on the street saying goodbye to the Mulder family the next afternoon. The women gave them food they had baked while the men offered advice that was already known by everyone. The kids in the neighborhood said goodbye, giving Fox small trinkets he could carry with him in his bag. He nodded his thanks, his eyes often finding Dana’s in the small crowd.
“Alright,” Bill Mulder said, shaking Dana’s father’s hand for the last time. “We have to get going. Time to shove off.” Everyone laughed out a groan and stepped away from the car calling out for safe travels.
Fox walked up to Dana and smiled, his hands in his pockets.
“I’ll write to you,” he said. “Once we get there, I’ll send you a letter.”
“Okay,” she whispered.
“Here,” he said softly. “I want you to have this.” From his pocket, he took out a smooth, flat, black stone. “I found this one day out in the woods and I really liked it. I was going to put it in the treehouse, but now… you’ll have to do it… when it’s finished.”
“Thank you,” she said, taking it from him and nodding as she looked at it. “It’s beautiful.”
“Fox! Come on!” his father shouted and Fox sighed.
“I have to go. Goodbye.”
“Wait! I have something for you too.” She took a folded piece of paper from her own pocket and handed it to him. “It’s a drawing of the treehouse.” He opened it quickly and she watched him as he looked at it.
“You finished it,” he said with a smile. “It’s perfect.”
“No. But it’s good.”
“It’s perfect,” he said again, smiling with a nod.
“Fox,” his mother said. “We have to get to the airport.”
“Okay, Mom.” He stepped forward and hugged Dana for the last time. “Goodbye, Dana Scully.”
“Goodbye, Fox Mulder,” she whispered.
He stepped back and hurried to the car, getting in and closing the door. He waved to her and she waved back, holding her tears in until their car had left the neighborhood and he could no longer see her.
___________
She never did finish the treehouse. Her heart was no longer in it.
And six months later, when her family was relocated to the state of Washington, she broke off one of the ladder rungs to take as a keepsake. Adding it to her ‘Fox Mulder’ box, which consisted of the rock he had given her when he left and the three letters he had sent her from Japan, she walked out of the house and did not look back.
___________
June 1977 San Diego, California
Dana locked the bathroom door and took the Polaroid picture out from where she had hidden it under her shirt, her heart thumping almost painfully in her chest. There had been a few pictures and she took the one that she felt would not be missed.
Seeing him so unexpectedly, as she and some other girls in the neighborhood had come to meet the new family, had made her freeze in place. Her ears rang and the conversation had suddenly sounded far away.
Fox Mulder, four years older than the last time she had seen him, was smiling at the camera with the same lopsided grin. His hair was longer and his face leaner, looking more like a man. But she could still see the boy she once knew.
“Did you take these pictures?” she had asked Susan, the older of the two sisters they had just met.
“Umm,” Susan had said, looking at what Dana was showing her. “Yeah! Well, no. I didn’t take them, but I was there. Isn’t he dreamy? You’ll never guess what his name is!”
“What?” Dana had said, not letting on just yet that she knew him.
“Fox! Isn’t that a hoot?” Susan had said, laughing with the other girls. “He was so sweet. He wasn’t really attached to any of the girls, but he danced and talked to all of us. One of the girls at the party had my camera and took those pictures. He was a good sport, but I don’t think he really wanted his picture taken.”
”When was this?” Dana had asked, looking through all the pictures again.
“About six months ago, at a Christmas party at the base we just left.”
Six months ago, Dana thought, touching his face in the picture. And two years since I’ve heard from him.
But… he still had the ability to make her stomach flip and her heart race. Even more so now as she could recognize the feelings for what they were and what they had always been.
She loved him. He had been the first boy she ever loved and the one by which she measured all others.
And how she missed him.
Putting the picture back under her shirt, she splashed some water on her face and left the bathroom to ask Susan if she knew how to get in touch with Fox once again.
_____________
June 1981 Annapolis, Maryland
Dear Dana,
I still can’t believe I heard from you after all this time. I’m so sorry we lost touch. You have no idea how sorry.
It’s going to sound crazy, but the day your letter arrived, I had been thinking about that old treehouse and wondering if any children played in it or had added to it. I’m sure if they have, it won’t look anything like your vision. Only you could create something like it.
“Dana! Come on! You’re going to be late!”
“Yeah! I’m coming!” Dana called back, putting the letter she knew by heart after all these years back into the ‘Fox Mulder’ box with a smile.
She checked her hair one last time, grabbed her cap and gown hanging on the back of her door and her shoes from the floor, before she ran down the stairs.
“It’s your graduation and you’re the last one out the door,” her father said, tapping his watch with his eyebrows raised.
“Looking good takes time, Daddy,” she said, smiling impishly as she hung the gown up on the small hook and went around to get in on the other side of the car. “We have plenty of time.”
“Hmm,” he hummed and shook his head, checking his watch again as he too got in the car.
______________
October 1982 Cornell University
Dana was reading as she walked to her dorm, checking to see if the answer she had put down in a test was correct. She stopped walking as she scanned the pages, holding her breath until she let it out as relief washed over her.
“Not that I doubted myself,” she said quietly, closing the book. “And now you’re talking to yourself. Stop it or people will think you’re crazy.” She struggled to get the book back into her bag and when she finally did, she turned and ran directly into someone.
“Oh my God, I am so sorry,” she said, stepping back with an embarrassed chuckle. “I need to watch where I’m go-”
She stopped speaking as her eyes widened and she took another step back.
“Hello there, Dana Scully,” came the familiar words that were now spoken in a much deeper tone.
“Hello to you too… Fox Mulder,” she whispered, shaking her head in disbelief as he grinned the lopsided smile she loved so much, his hands in his pockets. “What? How are you here? How did you know where to find me? What are you doing here?”
“I called my mom, who then hunted up the number and called your mom, who then called me back and could not stop gushing over her incredibly brilliant daughter who was currently at Cornell University studying to become an engineer. Well… when I told her I wasn’t at all surprised to hear that, she laughed and said no, she supposed I wasn’t.” He grinned at her and she shook her head again.
“So you’re… you’re just here? Here?” she asked, her brain not quite understanding what her eyes were clearly seeing.
“Yeah. I’m here.”
They stared at one another, taking in the new faces they saw, while also seeing the friend they had once known so long ago. She smiled slowly and then threw her arms around his neck, crying and laughing at the same time.
“I have missed you so much,” she whispered.
“I’ve missed you too,” he said and she laughed as he squeezed her tightly, lifting her off her feet and spinning them in the crisp autumn air.
“Please don’t leave again anytime soon,” she said and he laughed as he set her down.
“I have absolutely no intention of doing any such thing.”
“Good,” she said, staring at him and still feeling as if it was all a dream.
“How about we get a cup of coffee? I think we have some catching up to do.”
“Yeah, we do,” she agreed and he grinned.
Gesturing for her to lead the way, she began to walk and he fell into step beside her. His hand brushed hers and her stomach flipped as a flush crept over her body. When his fingers intertwined with hers, she exhaled a deep breath, closing her eyes for a brief second, a smile tugging at her lips.
“Do you think the place we’re going to will have Ding Dongs?” he asked and her eyes flew open as she laughed.
“Not likely, but I know a place close by that sells them.”
“Good,” he said, squeezing her hand as they continued on the path.
No, she thought with a smile and almost imperceptible shake of her head. It’s more than good. So much more than good.
_________
November 1990 Boston, Massachusetts
It was late, but she was nearly finished with her project. She had drawn and redrawn it so many times, the lines were beginning to blur.
Stepping back, she looked at it and nodded, feeling that sense of completion she did every time she got it just right.
Leaving the papers laid out so she could check them over one more time in the morning, she laid the rock Fox had given her so long ago directly in the middle. Pressing two fingers to her lips, she kissed them and then touched the rock before reaching to turn off the light above her large drafting desk.
Before she did, her eyes landed on the drawing of the treehouse she had made and given to Fox to take with him when he left for Japan. He had saved it, always keeping it pressed in one of his favorite books so it did not get lost. He had carefully traced over her pencil lines with a black pen when it had begun to fade, wanting to preserve it.
He had surprised her with it the first night in their first apartment.
“That’s been all around the world,” he had said, touching the black frame as they both looked at it and her eyes filled with tears. “And now it’s finally back home.”
It had sat on a shelf until it was the first picture they hung in their new home.
The second was their wedding picture and some days she was not sure which one she loved more.
Leaving the office, she intended to head to bed, seeking Fox’s warm body to snuggle into, but a light coming from the backyard porch stopped her.
She walked through the kitchen and smiled when she saw Fox wrapping multicolored Christmas lights around the railings. Grabbing her jacket, she put it on as she opened the door and stepped outside.
“What are you doing out here, you crazy man?” she whispered, mindful of the late hour.
“Adding ambience to our little corner of the world,” he replied, smiling at her before returning to his task.
“And you couldn’t wait until tomorrow?”
“No. No time like the present,” he stated, reaching for the last strand and beginning to wind it around the handrail.
She watched him as she shook her head, too many emotions suddenly nearing the surface.
“Hey,” she said softly.
“Yeah?” he replied just as softly.
“I love you.”
He looked up and smiled, abandoning the lights and walking over to her. She tilted her head back to look at him and his eyes dropped to her lips.
Pushing onto her tiptoes as he lowered his head, their lips met in the middle, her hands pressed gently to his cold cheeks. He pulled her closer and she wrapped her arms around his neck.
“Still the smartest person I know,” he whispered against her lips and she exhaled a chuckle.
“And?” she prompted teasingly, pulling back to look at him.
“And,” he said, smiling the smile that would forever make her feel weak in the knees. “I love you too.”

7,16,38, 51 and 99!
#7. Wet Dream - Wet Leg
This was a new one this year! It's pretty catchy. I honestly thought it was about two lesbians so that's the scene I was picturing:
I was in your wet dream Driving in my car What makes you think you're good enough To think about me when you're touching yourself?
#16. The Less I Know The Better - Tame Impala
This is a very old favourite and it has a really, really special place in my heart. It feels like it's a part of me tbh. The opening lines of the first verse get me every time:
Someone said they left together I ran out the door to get her She was holding hands with Trevor Not the greatest feeling ever
then the last lines of the same verse also wrap it up nicely:
Then I heard they slept together Oh, the less I know the better
#38. Yummy - Ayesha Erotica
Complete 180 degree change in mood here. grade A cunt servitude as a song. It's very catchy, and these also happen to be the cleanest lyrics:
Yeah, big purse with the rhinestone buckle Keep a pink stun gun just in case I'm in trouble Double double, yeah, they asking for the fries on the side But I never take 'em home unless it's eyes on the ride
#51. Say Yes To Heaven - Lana Del Rey
I'll be honest, I don't know how we got here but I've always been a Lana girlie so it's hardly surprising she made it lol. I loooove depressing af songs. Truly my favourite type of song out there.
If you dance, I'll dance I'll put my red dress on, get it on And if you fight, I'll fight It doesn't matter now, it's all gone
#99. Turn Me On - Kevyn Lyttle
I was in a really good mood on this day and I listened to it a bunch of times. I actually adore this type of dancehall music and raggaeton, like Sean Paul (for example) and this song goes sooo hard. It's so true that Caribbean music is insanely horny too like every song is basically "we are about to fuck and let me describe it in detail" lmao
So let me hold you Girl caress my body You got me going crazy - You Turn me on Turn me on
