S01e12 Faith, Dean is dying.

S01e13 Route 666, After Dean's emotional conversation with Cassie.

S01e19 Provenance, Dean is incredibly hungover.

S01e20 Bloodlust, John is there and practically took over their hunt.

S01e22 Devil's Trap, Dean is in no condition to drive.

S03e02 The Kids Are All Right, Ben is in the back of the Impala, after they rescued him and he other kids.

S04e02 Are You There God, It's Me Dean Winchester, It's the middle of the night and Dean's asleep in the passenger seat.

S04e16 On The Head Of A Pin, driving back to the motel form Pamela's funeral.

Notes on Jamil's speech patterns

I was supposed to just pick out some examples of typical Jamil lines. How he speaks, the vocabulary he uses, things like that. Something I could easily refer to when writing to get the tone right.

But then it kinda blew up, oop – because it’s hard to talk about how a character speaks without also dipping into why they say whatever they say.

Plus then I wanted to get examples of Jamil in different moods, and could not resist some poignant things that were more related to his character or backstory rather than strictly the speech patterns themselves, so… It expanded a bit.

Anyways. Some things I noticed he tends to do:

Sighs (more than I realized)

Snarks

Tch (though could be a more general twst writing choice too)

Stutters when he’s flustered / embarrassed / caught of guard (what a cutie)

Goes ahem like an old man when he’s trying to get back on track in those off-kilter moments

Kinda formal with his manner of speech and choice of words (especially in servant mode) (I always worry I exaggerate this but he sure does do that)

But there’s still some animatedness with the way he emphasises words, for example

(so long-suffering and ready to bark out directions to Kalim oh boy - the way the directness just comes through when he loses it)

sugarcoating his opinions if he doesn’t feel like he can say them plainly (tyrant becomes rigorous, etc.)

sarcasm, sometimes with a side of deadpan, sometimes with a smirk

“Good grief” (another thing I didn't realize was that much of a catchphrase)

Very mild on the level of insults & swears honestly, (I mean, "drat"?) but I imagine this is more of a result of the game's rating (I guess for in-game reasons we can say he's been very conditioned by his upbringing)

I put the screenshots that seemed telling, and some related notes, on to a google sheet. That way one can filter and order it in various ways.

The sheet is probably best viewed on a computer or another larger screen, the screenshots might make it a bit difficult to navigate on mobile.

I did go in with the assumption that Jamil might speak differently pre-overblot (when the servant mask is firmly in place) and post-overblot (at least those occasions where he allows himself to be more honest). Like, there’s the sycophantic (as Leona calls it) flatterer, versus when Jamil’s honestly voicing his own thoughts. Which also shows in how I chose to categorize the screenshots.

Of course events are a bit wibbly wobbly in relation to the main story so can’t be placed in the timeline in the same way, but there are still those occasions where it seems you can tell the difference between the servant mask and a Jamil who’s not saying things just for the sake of appearances.

So, to explain the logic of the sheet:

First column has a screenshot of something Jamil says. The second two columns give the source.

The column for whether or not this happened before or after the overblot is only really used for main story things, since event stories are kinda murky timeline-wise.

Next is whether Jamil seems to be putting on the servant mask or speaking more honestly. This is where get more to interpretation territory, and I’ve not applied it to every screenshot (either because that didn’t seem like the relevant part for that line, or because I couldn’t tell).

The last column of the sheet is where we get most to my personal interpretations. So of course you might read these lines differently than I do, and that’s completely fine, these are simply the aspects that seemed poignant to me. Some notes are simply pointing out specific word choices or style of speech, others delve more into character analysis side of things.

Totally fine if you want to copy this file or modify it to your own needs. All I ask is that you don’t pass off anything I wrote as your own thoughts.

Order of lines is based purely on the order the pics were in my screenshots folder, so guess this is also an insight on the order I played things in, lol.

something that i've been really enjoying about writing radiostatic recently is that they're both monsters in opposite directions. alastor is scary like a nightmare, like a bogeyman, grand and eldritch in scale in a way that alarms the animal hindbrain. but on a personal level, when he's in a good mood, he... seems kind of toothless, actually. what makes him really threatening is his mythos, not his human personality, which can be as meanspirited and cruel and manipulative as any other regualar person, but for the most part is just disarmingly eccentric. you're wary of what he can do but you're still willing to approach him.

on the other hand, though, vox is scary in ways that are viscerally human—he's your shitty boss, your abusive ex, your neglectful parents. he manipulates and gaslights and warps reality for his own gain and he does it with a smile and an insistence that it's for your own good, and you'll believe it. he doesn't have a terrifying reputation because he doesn't want one; it would honestly just impede what already works for him. the contrast is hilarious to me personally because i've found that my readers tend to be less on edge about alastor's serial killing and more alarmed about vox being a classic lying piece of shit and i find that delightfully funny

My goal for this piece, in addition to playing with patterns and textures and adding some Naruto references, was to add as many death flags as possible.

The idea of having Izuna in a fireman's coat is obviously not from me. I've always like the idea of Uchihas in fire resistant clothes, and the opportunity for a thick texture alongside a reversible double pattern is very appealing. I used the image of the second reference as a base, with skulls on one side and stylized lightning patterns on the other (visible inside the sleeves and collar). Both were common immagery of firemen coats.

The actual skull pattern is taken from the third reference. I'd seen this one before and before even learning anything abt it it was too beautiful to pass up. Those white and navy gradients are absolutely delightful and I enjoyed using my gel pens for them very much.... This particular type of imagery with skulls and bones in a field is called Nozarashi, inspired by Buddhist representation of death and transience.

The lightning pattern itself is a reference to water and lightning dragons :) Like Tobirama's iconic jutsu, it's one of the hints of what's abt to happen to our little guy. The scabbard is also decorated with dragon motifs for the same reason.

The background pattern is taken from the first reference, another fireman's coat with an illustration of Raijin, the thunder god. He is often representated with drums decorated with tomoes. It works nicely as a standard looking sharingan illustration, with a reference to Tobirama's hiraishingiris with the thunder imagery, like the thunder patterns inside the coat.

If you're interested in this I recommend the book linked in the second reference! It is entirely about skeleton motifs in japanese clothing of the early 20th century.

i feel like im out of place talking about this, but as always correct me if im wrong. i know people dont like doja but all of a sudden these fangirls miss alicia (i think thats her name dont quote me on that) when i clearly remember the blogs and twitter stans also hating on her saying she didnt love joseph.

but now that he's with a black woman, they start bringing up cancelling him and missing the other girl he'd been with. and yes, given, i know doja has been a bat shit crazy person who needs to seriously take accountabilty. that still doesnt change the fact that the moment one of these british white men or white man period, chooses to date a black woman suddenly everyone feels the need to play mind reader.

and lets not act like some of ya'll werent jumping at the chance to remind people everywhere that yes ms. nyongo is boo'd up to some other man and no her and joseph are strictly friends, the moment anyone tried to say they'd be such a cute couple. 🤷🏽‍♀️ im just saying its a fuckin weird track record.
