They were so bad at their jobs in the first seasons.
Like, they knew how to hunt, they both were really good at finding what was killing people and killing it, but they were horrible at being people.
The Sam and Dean I remember: Fake FBI, fake National Security, Fake reporters, almost no issues Season 1 and 2 Sam and Dean: Constantly getting doors slammed into their faces, had to climb over fences and break into the place they needed anyways because no one ever believed them. Go somewhere as National Security, the real National Security appears immediately after.
They were a disaster

Dean was so angry, so done with John's BS here
I have a lot of thoughts about this so long post under the cut
The previous episode (S01e20 Dead Man's Blood) Dean's been struggling with seeing John again for the second time in almost a year (you know that because Sam's driving the impala, and I'm going to make a post on that), with falling back into the little soldier role, trying to avoid conflicts between Sam and John with movements that look so practiced, so natural for him, he puts himself in the middle of them without thinking when things start getting heated.
And it's interesting how he faces Sam first, because it's how he must have been doing it for ages, calming his brother down so he doesn't antagonize John, because you can see that Dean's never disobeyed him, he's always tried to keep the peace, so he calms Sam down, and only then he turns, and tells John to back off ("Stop it! That's enough!", but "That means you too"). He spends the entire episode in the middle of John and Sam's disagreements, trying to convince himself that he's the same kid who follows every order his father gives him.
And then John gets the Colt, and argues with Sam when he says he'll go alone to hunt the Yellow-Eyed demon, and Dean fights back, "Dad, all due respect but, uh, that's a bunch of crap." and you can see the surprise, both Sam and John, neither was expecting Dean to say anything, and he backs off when John orders him to, but he still openly disagreed with him, and he does it again, in the same episode (and defends himself to John, "You ignored a direct order", "we saved your ass"), and it's Sam's time to look at his brother and father and wonder if a fight is going to break.
And tensions are high in S01e21 Salvation, with Pastor Jim's death and Sam and John still snapping at each other at any opportunity and Dean staying out of it... until they tell John about the vision.
And I can remember how scared Sam was about his visions, how scared Dean was about his baby brother having weird powers, how adamant he was that Sam was nothing like Max Miller, and when John asks when were you going to tell me about this? he's talking directly to Dean. And Dean's been trying to contact his dad for months, he's left angry, sad, scared voicemails, and now John tells him this? Dean snaps.

OK but I need someone to talk about how gentle Dean was with Lucas (S01303, Dead in the Water) (how well he interacts with kids in general but this is the first interaction we get and it's so good).
This is a kid that's seemingly traumatized by watching his dad drown, a kid who's been nonverbal for a bit now, who draws and appears to ignore everyone around him.
And Dean thinks he might know something, but he doesn't try to make him talk, he doesn't get angry or impatient, he just tries to connect with him. The first thing he does is try to relate to Lucas via something he likes (first the toy soldiers, then coloring, "mind if I sit and draw with you for a while?" and sits in silence with him, and "This is my family" for a drawing of stick figures, mom, dad, Sam and him)
He doesn't push for Lucas to talk, he's constantly asking him to communicate with him however Lucas wants to ("Maybe you can nod yes or no for me")
Even when the case is seemingly closed, Dean is really worried about him ("Lucas was really scared.", "I just don't want to leave this town until I know the kid's okay."). I just... We talk a lot about Ben (and we're right to do so), but every interaction Dean's had with a child is just so good.

Something something Dean Wichester is bi and he knows it something something Dean has a very anti-police view that Sam doesn't and it seems to be backed by experience something something the police are homophobic

A non comprehensive list of the men Dean flirted with or had tension with (up to S04e10, Heaven and Hell)
Roy (The hunter hired to help the Collin siblings find their missing brother, S01e02, Wendigo)
The coroner (trying to be charming to get information, S01e05, Bloody Mary)
Scotty (In an attempt to be charming to get information, S01e11, Scarecrow)
Ash (For a moment there, S02e02, everybody Loves a Clown)
Gordon Walker (During like... the entire ep until it was revealed he was an asshole, S02e03, Bloodlust)
A policeman (S02e07, The Usual Suspects)
The Janitor (Kind of, Gabriel's fault, S02e15, Tall Tales)
Richie (Watch it again, tell me Dean didn't light up at seeing him, and that his face didn't fall the second the girl appeared, S03e04, Sin City)
Victor Henricksen ( S03e12, Jus In Bello)
Castiel. (.... it started in S04e01 Lazarus Rising, it ended in... uhhhh... never?)
I know Anna was a girl but 1, she got a crush from hearing angels talk about Dean, you can see it, and it sure as fuck wasn't Uriel. 2, if you tell me that her grabbing onto Cas' handprint while they had sex was not at least a little bit gay for Dean you're lying (S04e10, Heaven and Hell)

You should know that in the Spanish dub the Impala has masculine pronouns

I'm on S02e03 of my SPN rewatching and I don't think Sam's had a single one-on-one interaction with a child yet. At all.
