What’s really frustrating about cycling is that I don’t always have time to watch entire races/stages, but I still like the slowness of it. So the 5-minute summaries where they only show tidbits of the important moments are don’t do it for me. I want a one hour summary. Or even better, a summary where you just remove all the dead time (which will sometimes be nothing, and I’m fine with that, and will sometimes be 95% of the day, in which case please keep 1hour of nothing. Please). That would be perfect.

My GIF Making process: Screen capturing using MPV player, Organizing files, 3 Sharpening settings, Basic Coloring PSD + Actions set

This is a very long post so heads up.

I’ll try to be as thorough and true as much as possible to the way I make my gifs (I already use Photoshop Actions which I’ve long since set up but now for this tutorial I’m reviewing them to show you the exact steps I’ve learned to create my gifs 😃) and present them to you in a semi-coherent way. Also, please bear with me since English is my second language.

First things first. Below are the things and tools we need to do this:

Downloaded 4K or 1080p quality videos (let’s all assume we know where to get these—especially for high definition movies and tv series—so this post doesn’t get removed, okay? 😛)

Adobe Photoshop CC or the CS versions can work as well, but full disclosure I haven’t created gifs using the CS versions since 2020. I’m currently using Adobe Photoshop 2024.

mpv player. Use mpv player to get those frames/screenshots or any other video player that has a screen grabber feature. I’ve used adapter for the longest time but I’ve switched to mpv because the press to screenshot feature while the video is playing has been a game changer not to mention ultimate time saver for me. For adapter you need to play it in another video player (like VLC player), to get the start and end timestamps of the scene you want to gif which takes me ages before I can even open Photoshop.

Anyway! Please stop reading this post for a moment and head over to this amazing tutorial by kylos. She perfectly tells you how to install and use mpv player, both for Mac and Windows users.

One thing I have to share though, I had a tough time when I updated my MacOS to Sonoma since MPV is suddenly either duplicating frames or when I delete the duplicates the player seems to be skipping frames :/ I searched and found a solution here, though it didn’t work for me lol. My workaround for this in the meantime is decreasing the speed down to 0.70 then start screenshotting—it’s not the same pre Sonoma update but it works so I’ll have to accept it rather than have jumpy looking gifs.

I want to share this little tip (sorry, this will only cater to Mac users) that I hope will be helpful for organizing the screenshots that MPV saved to the folder you have selected. Because believe me you don’t want to go through 1k+ of screenshots to select just 42-50 frames for your gif.

The Control + Command + N shortcut

This shortcut allows you to create a new folder from files you have pre-selected. As you can see below I have already created a couple of folders, and inside each folder I have selected screenshots that I want to include in one single gif. It's up to you how you want to divide yours, assuming you intend to create and post a Tumblr gifset rather than just one gif.

Another tip is making use of tags. Most of, if not all the time, I make supercorp gifs so I tag blue for Kara and red (or green) for Lena—just being ridiculously on brand and all that.

Before we finally open Photoshop, there's one more thing I want to say—I know, please bear with me for the third? fourth? time 😅

It's helpful to organize everything into their respective folders so you know the total number of items/frames you have. This way, you can add or delete excess or unnecessary shots before uploading them in Photoshop.

For example below there are 80 screenshots of Kara inside this folder and for a 1:1 (540 x 540 px) Tumblr gif, Photoshop can just work around with 42-50 max number of frames with color adjustments applied before it exceeds the 10 MB file size limit of Tumblr.

Sometimes I skip this step because it can be exhausting (haha) and include everything so I can decide visually which frames to keep later on. You'll understand what I mean later on. But it's important to keep the Tumblr 10 MB file size limit in mind. Fewer frames, or just the right amount of frames, is better.

So, with the screenshot organization out of the way, let's finally head over to Photoshop.

Giffing in Photoshop, yay!

Let’s begin by navigating to File > Scripts > Load Files into Stack…

The Load Layers window will appear. Click the Browse button next.

Find your chosen screenshots folder, press Command + A to select all files from that folder then click Open. Then click OK.

After importing and stacking your files, Photoshop should display the following view:

By the way, I'll be providing the clip I've used in this tutorial so if want to use them to follow along be my guest :)

If you haven't already opened your Timeline panel, navigate to Windows > Timeline.

Now, let's focus on the Timeline panel for the next couple of steps.

Click Create Video Timeline, then you’ll have this:

Now click the menu icon on the top right corner then go to Convert Frames > Make Frames from Clips

Still working on the Timeline panel, click the bottom left icon this time—the icon with the three tiny boxes—to Convert to Frame Animation

Select Make Frames From Layers from the top right corner menu button.

So now you have this:

Go and click the top right menu icon again to Select All Frames

Then click the small dropdown icon to set another value for Frame Delay. Select Other…

The best for me and for most is 0.05 but you can always play around and see what you think works for you.

Click the top right menu icon again to Reverse Frames.

I think Photoshop has long since fixed this issue but usually the first animation frame is empty so I just delete it but now going through all these steps there seems to be none of that but anyways, the delete icon is the last one among the line of feature buttons at the bottom part of the Timeline panel.

Yay, now we can have our first proper GIF preview of a thirsty Lena 😜

Press spacebar to watch your gif play for the very first time! After an hour and half of selecting and cutting off screenshots! 😛 Play it some more. No really, I’m serious. I do this so even as early (lol) as this part in the gif making process, I can see which frames I can/should delete to be within the 10 MB file size limit. You can also do it at the end of course 🙂

Now, let’s go to the next important steps of this tutorial post which I’ve numbered below.

Crop and resize to meet Tumblr's required dimensions. The width value should be either 540px, 268px, or 177px.

Convert the gif to a Smart Object for sharpening.

Apply lighting and basic color adjustments before the heavy coloring. I will be sharing the base adjustments layers I use for my gifs 😃.

1. Crop and Resize

Click on the Crop tool (shortcut: the C key)

I like my GIFs big so I always set this to 1:1 ratio if the scene allows it. Press the Enter key after selecting the area of the frame that you want to keep.

Side note: If you find that after cropping, you want to adjust the image to the left or another direction, simply unselect the Delete Cropped Pixels option. This way, you will still have the whole frame area available to crop again as needed and as you prefer.

Now we need to resize our gif and the shortcut for that is Command + Opt + I. Type in 540 as the width measurement, then the height will automatically change to follow the ratio you’ve set while cropping.

540 x 540 px for 1:1

540 x 405 px for 4:3

540 x 304 px for 16:9

For the Resample value I prefer Bilinear—but you can always select the other options to see what you like best.

Click OK. Then Command + 0 and Command + - to properly view the those 540 pixels.

Now we get to the exciting part :) the sharpen settings!

2. Sharpen

First we need to have all these layers “compressed” intro a single smart object from which we can apply filters to.

Select this little button on the the bottom left corner of the Timeline panel.

Select > All Layers

Then go to Filter > Convert for Smart Filters

Just click OK when a pop-up shows up.

Now you should have this view on the Layers panel:

Now I have 3 sharpen settings to share but I’ll have download links to the Action packs at the end of this long ass tutorial so if you want to skip ahead, feel free to do so.

Sharpen v1

Go to Filter > Sharpen > Smart Sharpen…

Below are my settings. I don’t adjust anything under Shadows/Highlights.

Amount: 500

Radius: 0.4

Click OK then do another Smart Sharpen but this time with the below adjustments.

Amount: 12

Radius: 10.0

As you can see Lena’s beautiful eyes are “popping out” now with these filters applied. Click OK.

Now we need to Convert to Frame Animation. Follow the steps below.

Click on the menu icon at the top right corner of the Timeline panel, then click Convert Frames > Flatten Frames into Clips

Then Convert Frames > Convert to Frame Animation

One more click to Make Frames From Layers

Delete the first frame then Select All then Set Frame Delay to 0.05

and there you have it! Play your GIF and make sure it’s just around 42-50 frames. This is the time to select and delete.

To preview and save your GIF go to File > Export > Save for Web (Legacy)…

Below are my Export settings. Make sure to have the file size around 9.2 MB to 9.4 MB max and not exactly 10 MB.

This time I got away with 55 frames but this is because I haven’t applied lighting and color adjustments yet and not to mention the smart sharpen settings aren't to heavy so let’s take that into consideration.

Go back to this part of the tutorial and apply the v2 settings.

Smart Sharpen 1:

Amount: 500

Radius: 0.3

Smart Sharpen 2:

Amount: 20

Radius: 0.5

We’re adding a new type of Filter which is Reduce Noise (Filter > Noise > Reduce Noise...) with the below settings.

Then one last Smart Sharpen:

Amount: 500

Radius: 0.3

Your Layers panel should look like this:

Then do the Convert to Frames Animation section again and see below preview.

Hi! My names Key (or Jess depending on where you know me from) and I’m here again on your dashboard to tell you about scams and the general things to look out for when you get asks for mutual aid.

Disclaimer: Not every blog asking for mutual aid is a scammer and therefore you shouldn’t assume everyone is a scammer on sight. It’s necessary to do some research into the accounts who appear in your askbox or DMs.

Anyway, what is a scam post?

A scam post is a post that’s usually asking for monetary support but isn’t being entirely honest about the reason and also may be misleading or stolen from someone else. These posts range from a variety of topics but generally are based on trending events or medical attention such as needing insulin or medicine to prevent lungs from collapsing. The scam post means that the post is false and no money sent is going to someone who needs it because the poster is lying and isn’t telling the truth about who they are or what their fundraising for and may be stealing their post off someone else to make bank. Sometimes a scam post is about needing to pay a bill for pet care and the images are stolen off another fundraiser offsite much like the usual scam.

How do you find out if something is a scam?

One of the best ways to find out if a post is a scam is to search the username of the blog and see if anyone’s made any posts about the account who sent you an ask. It’s also suggested to search the ask as well to see if it may have came from another blog who was already called out for the same scam at some point in time. You may also find the account disappears before you can answer the ask if you was waiting some time before answering it.

It’s also likely the account may reuse the same pfp/story across multiple accounts with very little change in their posting content. This means the blog sending the ask has only a few random reblogs and then one original post. What the blog hopes for is that you don’t bother scrolling down a lot to see how very few posts they may have. If you use timestamps, you’ll see that often the pinned post is a few days old or even hours old. The tags also are usually completely unrelated to the content itself. (If you’re legit and do this for visibility, don’t. It’s spam if not in reblogs. Please use only related tags as per the rules.) Sometimes the link is several colors of text. (If you do this for some reason, please consider accessibility for those who can’t see some color and may miss the link entirely.) And other times there’s a linktree link posing as something else.

Also the blog may say they’re vetted/verified but keep in mind this doesn’t matter if they don’t tell you or say anywhere on their blog who vetted them or what organization confirmed their legitimacy. They won’t say who because asking whoever it is would instantly call out the scammer themselves. It has happened already and that’s why you shouldn’t trust a ‘vetted’ blog if they don’t list anyone anywhere on their page. Some accounts will just say that and expect you to not ask anything because they can’t pass whatever means of verification is asked for.

What do you do if you know for certain a post is a scam?

Please alert anyone sharing the post and also make a post yourself compiling the evidence you’ve gathered proving the scam so others searching will see it and be able to decide for themselves if the account is a scam or not. This makes it easier for a scam blog to be found out even if they try changing urls as they always do that for some reason.

Do you think Sarah and BB not announcing the next book while the shipwar continues is intentional or not? I’ve seen both arguments and I lean toward not because if i’m correct Sarah doesn’t really get on social media and yes BB would most likely have a media team or someone to help Sarah with marketing but I also feel like the shipwar is mostly within the fandom and not something the average reader would know about and so it might just be “a few bad apples” to someone on a media team or something scrolling through tags not like a full blown issue and not just that but you do have to manually turn on timestamps on posts on tumblr and it’s not always obvious when a tiktok was posted and from experience towards the end of TOG while it wasn’t anything as bad as this with tiktok not being around/popular yet it was the same level of anger and hatred over ships on tumblr like it tends to cycle through toward the end of Sarah’s series where things are wrapping up and all the sudden the fandom is in flames for a while

Honestly I think SJM has a really shit PR/Media team. They have never done a really good job with promoting any of her books and other than the random book signing and instagram live here and there, they're really doing a poor job of capitalizing on the popularity of her books.

In regards to the ship war, I think it only really exists online. Most casual readers ship Elriel or Elucien, and do not have any stake of interest in what is endgame or not. Gwynriel isn't even something that ever comes up, let alone is considered.

I don't think festering the ship war is intentional, as I don't think BB even knows of its existence. Even if it did know, it probably wouldn't know how to use it to their advantage anyways (sorry not sorry). I think the only reason it's taken this long to get the next ACOTAR book out is because SJM was working on CC, her tv show thing (idk if it's even happening still), etc.

If they were trying to be intentional about the ship war, the recent articles that have been published would've hinted at that. But most articles only mentioned Elriel, referring to Lucien as just someone who is her mate who she does not speak to lmao. If you think back to the twilight craze, we allllll knew Bella was going to end up with Edward. But there was still such a big ship war and it was purely just marketing. We had celebrities out here putting #team Jacob on their Twitter bios, teenage girls with full Team Edward merch, and whatnot.

So yeah, long story short, the next ACOTAR is taking a while because SJM is the bottleneck here, not BB trying to prolong some toxic ship war

I feel slightly insane because it’s like …??? It’s so obvious how core and special their friendship is to both of their contents on HC. Sorry if this sounds like I’m asking for you to justify your opinions, I’m not I’m just genuinely curious on you analysis cause it’s always so good, but I was reading your tags on nailgunstigmatas post about macden, and I was wondering what you think dennis is doing with the “implications” things if not trying to be a rapist? I always thought he was self aware at what he’s doing, and just does it anyways. Do you think he actually thinks the implications give him consent, or something else?

I think if dennis was given a verbal "no", he would back off. he's counting on them not saying no. glenn actually speaks on it here (timestamped @ 1:52).

there is a very, very specific line that dennis toes that relies on it being dubious consent. but there are several moments on screen where we can SEE that dennis will take no for an answer, and the only times this is challenged is in something like fatty magoo vs the aluminum monster where it's not explicitly sexual in context ("i'm a winner, and winners, we don't listen to words like "no", or "don't" and "stop", those words are just not in our vocabulary"). dennis denies being a rapist every single time someone accuses him of being one. whether he actually qualifies as one or not (because coercion is obviously being used), dennis does not WANT to be a rapist by his own definition of the term. he very, very explicitly says this when discussing the implication.

it's a very thin line, but the line is still there. he obviously has a very fucked up view of what does actually qualify as rape, but i believe if someone outright told him no, he wouldn't pursue it further.

and like. dennis is absolutely NOT self aware. at all. he is trying extremely hard to get mac to understand him here and is frustrated that it's coming off in a way he didn't intend it to. he does not want to be seen as a "monster" or a rapist. he is still counting on his conquest saying YES to him. because even if he is pushing her into saying yes, he makes it clear that it's still ultimately her decision.

i think that dennis believed he found a loophole and now he's questioning it because mac pointed out its flaws. and the whole point of the episode is to deconstruct this and to put dennis through what he was proposing.

dennis does not want to hurt these women, but he wants to utilize their fear to coerce them into saying yes, because they don't know what dennis is potentially capable of. and he's defensive over the fact that mac can't see that his intentions are not to force them into having sex with him if they don't want to, even if that is ultimately what he's proposing.

I’m mostly seeing complaints about this tumblr update breaking prev tags custom. Personally i don’t use/encounter that issue much (most of my tumblr circle seems to hate ‘prev tags’, and personally I try to copy tags into the post body if I want to save or respond to them)

However being able to trace reblog chains was super useful for me for other reasons:

* trying to date a post when OP has deactivated (which can break a post’s timestamp -- in which case following back reblog chains can establish a lower bound on the post’s age)

* tracing a post’s passage through one’s tumblr circle back -- in particular, sometimes I want to know if a person I follow reblogged from me indirectly (that is, say I Blog-B-who I follow puts a post on my dash that looks familiar, and I want to know if B reblogged from C who reblogged from me.) Yes, this is petty, but it was a neat tool available under the software that is no longer available.

anyways, i’m really going to feel the lack of this feature, and I’m not sure what the upside of this change even is -- it was already possible to go to the top of the previous person’s blog by clicking on their avatar (either from the dashboard view, or waiting for their avatar to appear in the pop up when you hovered over their username & clicking on that)

Buck knows why Eddie is being cautious. He knows this is a big deal. So he forces himself to pause, and to promise. “I’ll talk to Bobby, and Tommy, okay? But Eddie, I’m doing this. I’m not going to change my mind. You know I'm not going to change my mind.” Eddie stares at him, his entire heart bleeding out in his eyes, and then he pulls Buck into a rough hug, pressing his face into Buck’s shoulder to try and stifle his sobs.

naturally my friend and I hit up the mANGA SECTION and it looks like a fucking barnes and noble shelf instead of a library…

He swirled his cup of tea, the faint aroma of the cold tea entering his nostrils as he took a long whiff of the liquid. Sighing, he set the cup down on the cold stone table. He’d drank so many cups of tea that he’d lost count.

There was a gentle breeze that brushed against his back. From the stone pavilion where he sat, he could see the full moon shining brightly, its twin reflected back on the rippling waves in the lake below. He closed his eyes, listening to the rustling of the willow tree by the lakeside, the chirping of the merry crickets, and the melancholy sound of the gayageum echoing from somewhere else in the palace.

It was a peaceful night, one that was forgettable if he didn’t make an effort to remind himself of the purpose of tonight’s outing. He’d sent away all the servants, who’d told him a while ago that it was already 자시— around 1am.

After staring at the moon for a while, he turned back to the untouched paper and brush that he had prepared. He had no idea just moments ago what to write, but he brush seemed to move on its own. He wrote line after line, until he suddenly stopped. Looking down at the paper, he saw the words:

古人今人若流水，共看明月皆如此

It was a verse from a poem by the renowned Chinese poet Yi Baek, whose poems’ subject matter was often the moon. People— from the past and present— are like flowing water, existing for brief moments in the great river of time. But they all see the same moon, shining brightly above them. This was the very same moon that the young boy saw as he laid down his brush to look back at the brilliant circle in the sky. There were many troubling thoughts that plagued his mind, and he knew it must’ve also been so for the common people, who have already gone to sleep in their humble adobes at this hour. Although he thought it was selfish for him to be guided by his emotions, he couldn’t always help it. The boy seomtiems felt like the young grass by the side of the lake, or the small flower in the patch where big flowers grew. He would spend his free time wandering the palace grounds, and would often take note of these small details. But today, he observed the moon. It was always there every night, but he’d never taken a good look at it. Is the moon also bright on the outside, but cold and lonely on the inside?

He didn’t know, for the moon was asleep during the day. However, those thoughts quickly disspated as he basked in the moon’s light, which comforted him in its silence and beauty. Mesmerized, he reached for his teacup without taking his eyes off the sky. His hand missed the cup and his arm knocked the cup over, the tea inside soaking into the the paper where he’d left a space for the last line of the poem. He carefully set the fallen teacup upright, then studied the splotch of tea water on the paper. Quietly, he waited for the paper to dry so he could finish the final line. Then suddenly, he picked up his brush once more and printed three neat characters on top of the half-dried oval tea stain on the paper. Now smiling widely, he stood up hastily and rushed to the side of the pavilion, where a ray of moonlight came through. Holding up the paper up, he saw his own name light up in the moonlight:

Thinking about it now, the best thing I could’ve done for myself was actually branch out and engage in content that I enjoyed and not follow people into fandoms for the sake of not losing that friendship. My art really did begin to improve two years ago when I let myself get involved in things that I genuinely enjoyed.

Once I got my simple and basic style figured out from cartoons I liked, I ended up falling for rtah stuff, that let me build on what I already knew to make it better. I transitioned from basic cartoon anatomy to complex real life structures in the span of 4 months during one of the hardest points of my life. Unstoppable force meets an immovable object. Quite impressed if I’m being honest
