Hello again; once more I return to tell you that I’m still alive! It’s been... gosh, a month and a half since I’ve looked at tumblr? Glorious, hahahah. 

So, what’s happened since early December? Gosh. Well. My cat Sanzo died. Poor thing just got sick, I guess. He was... nearing on 13?  Unfortunately then my outside cat Chip also passed away. She’d been sick for a while, but there was nothing much I could do about it since I couldn’t bring her inside without risking my other cats getting ill. I guess at least she’s not cold anymore. 

I’ve had some tooth pain on the opposite side of my mouth from where I got the root canal done in August. The root canal tooth is still being bothersome, but I’m told that’s... fairly normal. I’m trying to be patient and see if it goes back to normal in the next couple months. The other side though... Well I went to the dentist thinking they’d do x-rays, but they didn’t want to do them again less than 6 months after last time. The dentist discovered I had a misaligned bite surface, which he figured was causing stress, so he filed it down. I’ve yet to see if that’ll fix it, but eh, whatever. I’ve got a checkup in 2 months, so I’ll probably be fine until then. 

Got a PS5 for Christmas, so that’s cool. That’ll play a part in one of my New Year’s Resolutions: beat at least 10 games. That’s supposed to encourage me to stop starting things and never finishing them, but uhhhh. We’ll see. 

Other resolution is to finish at least 10 books. Going well so far: I read Bridge to Terabithia the other day and cried a lot lol. I, uh, had no idea what the book was about, but it exceeded expectations significantly. 

Weather has been terrible lately. Cold but little to no snow, and nothing that sticks. Just waiting for spring to come around at this point. 

Hoping to get back to some writing and drawing, but again, we’ll see. Also hoping to compile my DotH Fallout fic into a book so I can print it for my own satisfaction. It was so nice to be able to hold Rogue in my hands; I want to do it again.

People aren't normally very patient with him, especially due to how on edge he can get

It's a bit shocking for him to see that you've stuck around, even before you started dating

When you two first cuddled he was so embarrassed. Blushing bright red and muttering a few reluctant insults before going quiet and just being a bright red mess. 

You don't remember if he fell asleep in your arms, or if you fell asleep in his, but it didn't matter.

You kiss him every morning. Sometimes it wakes him up and other times it doesn't, but it makes you happy either way. 

He really has a sweet tooth, even if he doesn't like admitting it. Peko and yourself might be some of the only ones who know.

You often surprise him with sweet things. Cakes, cookies, cupcakes, and especially doughnuts.

He always acts a bit annoyed at first but the facade collapses as he eats

"You didn't have to make me anything, you know? I don't like sweets"

"Thank you, (Y/N)... This is amazing, as usual" 

Gundham Tanaka

The Lord of darkness and a sweet baker never seemed like they'd be the best pair, but they were. 

Even before you got together, you would surprise him with small cakes you were creating recipes for to get his opinions

"A Lord of darkness such as myself does not need such worldly goods!"

Yet he still eats them and showers you with compliments

Apparently, all the horrific forces at play in the many universes would enjoy them

When you found out about his demonic beasts, you found them absolutely adorable

You went to your recipe book to see if you could find any treats for hamsters but couldn't find any. 

The same went for online

So you made that your mission. Making a sweet for only the most ferocious of hamster beasts.

You tried to keep it a secret, but gundham found out, and declared he must join you on your mission in life. 

Every afternoon he would meet you at your kitchen and you'd both work on recipes to find something that would be easy to replicate and mass produce that brings the dark devas powers to their fullest potential. 

You would work until the early hours of the morning. What was once going to be a small present had spiraled out of control, but you didn't mind. 

It was fun to spend your time with someone as passionate as the ultimate breeder.

When you had finally cracked the code, it was early in the morning. He was so happy that he looked like he was about to hug you

"(Y/N), I often wish you weren't a mere human." He said as he watched the devas eat their sacred meals.

"Even a human of your strength would perish by simply touching me, and it pains my heart"

He continued to ramble about how his power had the ability to destroy any human, and how he sometimes feared making companions for that reason

And then you hugged him

He was caught by surprise, and shocked when you didn't turn to dust in front of him

Maybe you weren't human after all

He decided you would be a perfect companion to rule the underworld with someday.

He crowned you the princess of darkness and unwavering determination.

Hajime Hinata 

Though he was a reserve course student, Hajime would often spend time with your class after school. 

He just became one of the pals.

You loved giving out treats during homeroom, so you would make sure to save him some to give him after school.

"I'm so sorry that it isn't warm, Hinata! Oh! What if you come with me? I'll make you some of whatever you want!"

You dragged him off to your room. 

"What do you want? I'll make anything!" 

He reluctantly said he'd have some chocolate chip cookies. 

You whipped them up instantly and gave them to you nice and warm. 

He thanked you generously.

You continued the habit of making him things, making them more and more creative.

His favorite was your orange zest cupcakes

He had wanted to ask you on a date for a while, but was too shy to. He was a reserve course student, why would you go after him of all people? 

Mahiru ended up being sick of him being so shy, so she asked for him.

You laughed and accepted. 

You both went out to dinner a few days later. He was flustered and yet also a little frustrated that Mahiru rushed him. 

The dinner went overall well, and he walked you home that evening. 

He thanked you for coming out with him and being so kind and sweet 

And then you suddenly 

Kissed his cheek

He went deep red and flustered as he sorta blanked out

He kissed you back quickly as you parted ways.

You both couldn't wait for tomorrow

Imposter (Byakuya)

You decided to hand out brownies to your class one morning, when they were nice and warm. 

Almost everyone showered you with praise for the baked goods, but one person especially. Byakuya Togami. 

He told you it was the best food made by a commoner he had ever tasted. 

You two slowly grew closer as you brought in baked goods once a week. 

At first he had treated you with overall indifference, yet as you talked to him more he slowly opened up to you. 

He talked about his favorite foods, his favorite brands, and even his hobbies. 

As you two started to talk out of school, you noticed some things that didn't seem to fit in with the way he normally talked. He wasn't calling you a commoner anymore.

He started to treat you like an equal. 

One morning when you were handing out baked goods during class, he gave you a note. 

Meet me at my locker after school today. I have something important to talk to you about -Byakuya Togami

He didn't say anything else, besides a quiet thanks. 

When you went to his locker after school, he looked surprisingly anxious

"Follow me, we're going to the park, (Y/N)" he said coolly 

He sat down on the bench next to you under a cherry blossom tree. 

He let his secrets spill. That he always wanted to be someone else. Someone who would be noticed. That he wasn't even sure who he was… 

He spoke quietly and with a steady voice as he stared you in the eyes

"Would you really care about someone who you don't really know?" He asked. 

"Yes, yes I would Byakuya. Because even if that isn't your name, I didn't befriend a name or a face… I befriended you for your heart" 

He looked like he was about to cry as he pulled you into a soft embrace. 

Kazuichi Soda

Souda really, really loved touch, and was surprisingly easy fluster.

He loved it when you held his hand in public, it would make his heart thunder out of his chest.

Not to mention cuddling

He would rub your back sometimes, too. 

Whenever your kitchen gadgets broke, he would rush over and fix them.

He tried to add some mods, too. To make things faster or more efficient.

They were often to fast to use reasonably, but you thanked him for them anyway

You loved surprising him in his garage when he was working. 

You would always bring him his favorite- death by chocolate cupcakes. 

Sometimes you'd get grease on your clothes. He'd rush to help you clean them and try to get the stains out. 

When he realized they wouldn't be able to fully get it out, he took her to the store and bought the same outfit, along with something else.

He adored spoiling you.

You were his princess.

Nagito Komaeda 

You had heard some of the things your classmates had said about one of the ultimate lucks. That he was creepy and had an obsession with the other ultimates

You didn't believe them. You didn't think they were lying or anything, just that they didn't understand him. 

You decided to introduce yourself to him, and he was so excited.

An ultimate would talk to him?

He apologized in advance for having to put up with trash like himself.

You assured him he wasn't trash, and even invited him to hang out after school. 

He asked about what your ultimate talent was.

When he heard baker, he was awed. Oh the hope that you would be able to bring into others with your treats!

You two would gradually hang out more and more and become better friends. 

You would bake him something every time, but something always turned out wrong.

A bit of eggshell somehow got in, the vanilla would slip out of your fingers and dump into the batch, the baking time on the recipe was wrong, or something had spilled on your cookbook

Nagito had to anxiously explain the way his luck worked. Terrible luck had to come before good luck, followed by even more terrible luck.

"Well then, I don't mind! As long as you're getting some good luck, I don't mind having to bake something a few times to get it correct for you due to bad luck"

He was shocked by your amount of hope and kindness. 

"What do you think the good luck is, by the way?" You asked him suddenly

"To be honest, I think its spending time with you after school, (Y/N)"

He asked you out, and you accepted. He thought it was all his luck, but it wasn't. 

You loved giving him love and affection. Even small things like holding his hands in public, to cuddling him on the couch when you watch tv together. 

The bad luck would really be inconvenient, yet you got through it if it meant you got to spend time with him. 

He often rambled about how much he didn't deserve you, yet you always cut him off and tell him how much you loved him. 

He loved you so much

You loved him so much.

Nekomaru Nidai

You two were both rather sweet to others, so it made sense that you got along right away. 

You quickly became the power couple of the school

He would pick you up and carry you on his shoulders all the time and make up little excuses for why he'd do it

Maybe it'd be faster if he just took you

It was for his workout

You had to grab something on the shelf

So on and so forth. 

You didn't mind, you just loved being carried by him. 

You would have movie nights with him all the time. 

You'd make cookies and pop some popcorn, and then cuddle with him or sit on his lap as the movie started

His favorite movie was Rocky

His favorite movie snack was your oatmeal bar cookies.  

Sometimes he massages you during the movies. You swear that those are the best things in the world.

He invites you to work out with Akane all the time. You aren't very athletic but accept anyway!

He has a list of exercises to help different parts of your body so you get a balanced yet not painfully difficult workout. It's one he had once used for a beginner's team, but it works well for you too. 

He makes sure to work out at a pace you can handle and gives you tons of tips before going off to spar with Akane

Sometimes, the winner gets your cookies. 

Those are the most intense any of their battles get

You and Teruteru had something in common before even knowing each other, as both of your ultimates were centered around culinary

He hadn't really tried to bake before

You decided to invite him to your home so you could show him what he was missing

He treated it like it was a date, and kept making inappropriate jokes the whole time, but you didn't really mind too much. 

He was having fun after all. 

You guys kept inviting each other over, either cooking or baking with one another. 

You realized he had feelings for you, but didn't reciprocate for a while

One day when you were cooking together it just hit you that you loved him

You loved his passion for his craft

You loved his kindness

You loved his humor

You loved him.

You asked him out

He accepted

Some things- a lot of things- stayed the same.

You would cook and bake every day together and search through recipe books to find new things to make

Other things changed

You were both big on cuddling and affection and couldn't get out of eachothers arms at night

His accent totally changed too. You didn't expect him to speak in a southern accent, but also didn't mind

It was nice to hear him talk about how beautiful you were in that voice. It showed you he didn't have to put up a front around you.

He would buy you aprons and dresses with light, pastel colours.

He just loved how everything looked on you. 

He would also buy some risque clothes, but if it made you very uncomfortable, he'd stop.

You realized why some of your classmates hated him, he could be pervy at times, even bordering on creepy. 

But that was just one flaw about him. 

His passion was almost unrivaled by your classmates, not to mention how funny he could be.

You just had to stick around to see that passion. Your patience went a long way.

Summary:  Yayoi hurt Ritsuka deeply, she knows that. More than anything she would like to make things right between them. She only hopes Ritsuka will grant her that chance.

Yayoi heard the front door to their apartment close and took a calming breath to prepare herself. She wasn’t really sure whether what she was planning was a good idea or not, but Yayoi knew she couldn’t bear Ritsuka’s closed off expression any longer.

She’d hurt him, even though that hadn’t been her intention. She’d questioned her brother’s fledgling feelings towards that kid in his band, even going so far as to call them unnatural and weird. What kind of thing was that for a big sister to do?

Especially when Ritsuka was so hesitant to show any feelings in the first place.

From the moment she’d uttered the words she’d wanted to take them back. Ritsuka had never been in love before, had never really shown interest in anything outside of his guitar. And now that he finally had, she had stomped all over it.

Ever since that day, they had lived as strangers, sharing the same house but not really speaking much outside of the necessary interactions to keep their parents off their radar, and Yayoi hated it.

She missed her little brother.

She looked at the bags she had placed on the kitchen counter earlier and hoped it was enough to repair what she’d broken. Yayoi grabbed the pot she would need to heat up the heavy cream, making as much noise as she was able in an effort to arouse her brother’s curiosity, but after a few minutes had passed, she gave up and went for a more direct approach.

“Ritsuka, can you come here for a moment?”

“What do you want?” his voice startled her, he’d been closer than she’d thought.

“Oh, hey! I was hoping you could help me with something,” Yayoi offered him her friendliest smile, the one which could usually get her anything she wanted from any male. Except for brothers apparently. Her smile dimmed as Ritsuka studied her with the same guarded expression that he’d given her since that day.

“Uhm, do you think you could chop up some chocolate for me?” Yayoi pleaded, “I have a shoot later today, and I can’t afford to break a nail.”

That was total bullshit. Even if she did such a thing, a nail artist would fix it promptly, but he didn’t have to know that.

“Fine,” Ritsuka went to the sink and washed his hands before accepting the packages of bittersweet chocolate from her and grabbing a large chef knife. He set about doing as she asked, and she used the time to think about what she wanted to say, not wanting to bring anything up while he was using a knife. His hands were just as important to him, especially now that his band seemed to be taking off.

She emptied out the remaining bags, placing the contents on the counter before filling the pot with the cream and putting it on the stove. She hummed a song as she waited for the cream to almost boil.

“What are you doing, anyway?”

“Tomorrow is Valentine’s Day, I thought it would be nice to make some chocolates for Take,” Yayoi explained, and then as if the idea had just occurred to her she added, “I don’t suppose you’d like to make some as well?”

“For Take? Why would I?” Ritsuka frowned.

“No moron, for your friend. I mean boyfriend,” she quickly amended with a laugh, wincing when it came out brittle, “I bought plenty of ingredients. You know, in case I messed up.”

Ritsuka was studying her once again, his eyes narrowing in distrust. He went back to the chopping board, carefully scooping some of the chocolate into the bowl Yayoi had placed for that purpose before resuming his chopping.

“Please stop for a moment,” Yayoi pleaded, ignoring the pot for now as she watched her brother put the knife down and clench the edge of the counter tightly.

“I screwed up, okay? I know I did, and I’m sorry, I shouldn’t have said those things to you,” Yayoi hugged her brother, ignoring the fact that he stiffened at her touch.

“Why not? You meant them,” Ritsuka snapped, letting some of his anger surface.

“I - I did, but I was wrong to say anything. And if I’m honest, I was mostly angry at Akihiko at the time. I couldn’t accept that he preferred another man to me,” she confessed. She might not have been consciously aware of it at the time, but her conversation with Haruki had convinced her of that fact.

“Look, it doesn’t matter what I think, or whether I understand your feelings or not. The only important thing is that you feel that way and that it makes you feel happy.”

Ritsuka hung his head, and she let go of him finally, knowing he wasn’t a massive fan of physical affection, at least not from her.

“Scared,” Ritsuka corrected, turning to look at her.

“What?”

“It makes me scared to feel this way,” Ritsuka admitted bluntly, “but also happy.”

Yayoi smiled, “I think I know how you feel, I get the feeling Take is a bit too good for me. But don’t tell him I said that.”

Ritsuka laughed, the first real one she’d heard in a while. “He is, actually,” he teased, “Way too good for the likes of you.”

“I want to understand, I really do,” Yayoi insisted, wanting Ritsuka to realize how important this was to her, how important he was to her.

“You should meet him then,” he invited, his eyes lighting up as he spoke about his boyfriend, “His name is Mafuyu. He’s a bit awkward and shy, and his guitar playing could use some work, but he uhm, well, he’s alright.”

Yayoi stared at him in wonder and burst into giggles.

“What’s so funny?” Rituska’s voice wavered, and she could hear the hurt closing in, threatening to ruin her efforts again.

“That might just be the most I’ve heard you say all at once, that’s all,” she replied, still giggling. “I definitely need to meet the guy who can make my little brother so chatty.”

Ritsuka shoved her playfully with his hips, and she felt contented, at peace. This was more like it.

“Does Mafuyu like chocolate?”

“Yeah, but maybe not these so much.”

“Are you insulting my chocolates?”

“No, but we’ll need to start over, the cream just boiled over,” Ritsuka pointed out, and Yayoi could see he was right.

“Shit!” she ran to the stove, pointedly ignoring her brother’s snickers and snide remarks about her cooking skills.

Ritsuka had already taken out a new pot and was pouring the cream into it, having read over the recipe while she cleaned up.

“I guess I’ll make some too, Mafuyu does have a sweet tooth,” he mentioned casually, even as he complained when he examined the molds she had bought, “Did it have to be hearts though? It’s so girly.”

“Says the guy who’s dating another guy,” Yayoi teased, snickering at the way Ritsuka stuck his tongue out at her.

“I might be gay, but I’m not a girl.”

It was said in a flippant tone, but Yayoi recognized it for what it was, a declaration. And maybe a test of sorts to see how she would react.

“Got it,” she replied with a smile, “and for the record, I like you just the way you are, even if you are a pain in my ass.”

Ritsuka rolled his eyes at her, but the return of his smile was everything she could have hoped for. She knew she hadn’t fixed everything, this was only a beginning, but she would do her best to be worthy of the second chance he’d given her.

A/N: I came up with this idea last night and it gripped me. I was once very close to my brother and I know this situation would have upset me greatly. We used to bond over making chocolate chip cookies and so I came up with this. I hope we get to see a similar conversation in the manga. Ritsuka deserves it. Hope you like it.

Bucky Chips a Tooth

Summary: Bucky chips a tooth and doesn’t want to get it fixed. Reader [she] wants to help, but the relationship between them is unsure. Steve and reader help Bucky out. Ends in fluff between reader and Bucky.

You hadn’t known him for very long. He was quiet and mysterious, which was actually really attractive to you. He didn’t speak that much, but he did go out of his way to talk to you sometimes. But it was only when no one else was around. If you were sitting in the kitchen, and not a single avenger was around, he’d speak to you. You were intrigued by the way he spoke, it was like molasses was just spilling out of his mouth. He never smiled though, and when you thought about it, didn’t even know if he had teeth.

You and Steve were sitting at the kitchen island enjoying a crunchy, cereal breakfast. You and him became very close, and you thought of him as one of your best friends. When Bucky came to live in the compound, Steve shifted a lot of his energy into making Bucky comfortable and welcome. You did the same, and this formed your relationship with him. You were very intimidated by him, but also felt comfortable around him. It was odd.

Bucky came walking out from the left side of the room, grabbing himself a bowl to eat some cereal.

“Morning Buck.” Steve said to him. Bucky looked at him, then you, as you were looking down, not wanting to make eye contact. He let out a quiet “morning” in response. He took a seat next to Steve, chomping down on his cereal. Moments went by until we heard a piercing scream come from Bucky.

“Owww!” Bucky was hysterical at this point, unable to say anything else.

“Bucky! What is it?” Steve was desperately trying to figure out what was wrong, but Bucky wasn’t cooperating. You looked over to him, seeing him have his flesh arm clenched around his jaw.

“Is it your mouth?” You asked, trying to be helpful. Bucky nodded vigorously, unable to speak. You got out of your chair to walk over to him. You were in between him and Steve, trying to figure out what was happening.

“Talk to us Buck, what is going on?” Steve asked. Bucky pointed to his mouth while his face was in tremendous pain.

“Uhhh, jaw? Your jaw?” You tried guessing. He shook his head no.

“Your teeth?” Steve chimed in. Bucky’s eyes went sad, which shaking his head yes. You and Steve looked at each other, knowing well that this was not going to be an easy conflict to deal with. Steve had told you in the past about Bucky, how a lot of his teeth were damaged and not in good condition. Steve was concerned for Bucky, he just wanted to help him but he didn’t want help.

“Something broke.” Bucky was able to mutter out to you and Steve.

“Let me see it, Buck.” Steve tried to be reassuring. Bucky shook his head no, still with an expression of fear over his face.

“Please,” Steve said softly. He rubbed his back, trying his best to comfort him.

“Okay,” Bucky managed to get out. He lifted his head and bared his teeth to you and Steve. His mouth was slightly open, as he pointed to the tooth that just chipped. You were in shock, and your expression showed it. This was the first time you’d ever seen his teeth, and it was a sad sight to see. Steve nodded as he looked at the tooth that Bucky had just chipped. “It’s chipped Buck. I gotta get you to a dentist.” Bucky’s face fell to sheer horror. You’d never seen this look cross his face in the time you knew him. It made your stomach drop, you felt sorry for him.

“Steve, please, no.” Bucky begged. His eyes were wide and filling up with tears. Steve’s expression fell to one of sympathy and sadness. He knew this wasn’t going to be easy.

“It’s going to get worse and you’re going to be in a tremendous amount of pain.”

“Nothing I’m not used to.” This comment made you and Steve shudder. You tried to get his eyes to meet yours, but he continued to look down in sadness.

“There’s people that can help you. They don’t want to hurt you. They won’t hurt you. I’ll be there to make sure nothing happens. Please Buck I can’t stand to see you in pain.”

Bucky was visibly crying at this point. You carefully reached your hands across his cheeks to wipe them away. His eyes finally averted to yours, as you kindly stared back at him.

“Fine.” Bucky managed to spit out. “But I want her there.” His gaze still fixated on you.

“Y/N is that okay with you?” Steve asked. You warmly smiled at Steve, “Yes of course” you spoke gently.

Steve pulled out his phone, speed dialing a number.

Tony? Yeah it’s Steve. Can you or Pepper please send over your emergency medical contacts immediately? I’ve got a situation over here. Okay, yeah. Thanks Tony. Bye.

Minutes later, Steve had an address to a trusted dentist office that he would take Bucky to. They can’t take any risks of anyone still trying to harm Bucky.

“I got us a private, safe place for us to go to. Are you ready Buck?”

He still looked sad. You grabbed his hand, hoping to try and ease him. He didn’t respond to your hand touch. He defeated nodded, as the three of you packed into the car, and headed to the dentist.

You got in immediately, as this place was a private office, consisting of only one office. Bucky took his place on the chair in the middle of the room, visibly shaking. You didn’t know what to do but you wanted to help him. The dentist wasn’t in the room yet, just you and Steve quietly sitting on the sides of him. Bucky began to hyperventilate intensely as you and Steve rushed to his side.

“Bucky, Bucky it’s okay. You’re safe, it’s Steve and Y/N you’re okay.” Steve tried to calm him.

You ran your hands through his hair and grabbed his hand yet again. Bucky was breathing in and out very hard, panting like a dog that just did a mile run.

“Just breathe Buck, concentrate on your breathing.” You started to speak. His breathing slowed at your voice. “That’s good. In, and out. You remember how to breathe, you can do this,” your voice was almost at a whisper. He squeezed your hand tight into his. “Easy” you continued. He turned his head to face yours, as yours lit up like a Christmas tree. He looked your face up and down, watching as his face became more relaxed.

A dark haired woman walked into the room shortly after, looking like a normal civilian. By this meaning, she had on jeans and a t-shirt. She looked like the most non threatening medical professional you’d ever seen. She made her way to kneel down beside Bucky. “Hi, Bucky. How are you doing today?” She asked kindly.

His lips pursed together. “Not good.” She nodded.

“I know you’re scared, and you have every right to be. I’m here to help you in the best way possible.” He remained quiet. You and Steve made eye contact, one that was communicating hope for this to work.

“Can I start by asking what’s going on?” Her voice was high and soft, it was calming, even to you. He still didn’t speak.

“My teeth are a mess.” He finally managed to get out.

“Okay. How so?” She asked.

“They’re chipped. Some are missing.” Your mind went back to the image of Bucky’s mouth open, revealing his teeth. A lot of them were chipped and broken in half. You also recall him missing a few back teeth, which made your skin crawl. You could just guess what caused it, your heart sank into your chest.

“Easy fixes right there. Would you mind if I have a look?” She kindly asked. He began to breathe heavily again, as you continued to squeeze his hand. He nodded, as the dentist walked out of the room to grab her tools.

“What can we do to make this easier, Buck.” Steve asked. His breathing was uneven, he was fidgeting in the chair, looked close to passing out. Bucky didn’t know how to make this better, he just wanted it to be over.

“Y/N, can you sit on my lap?” Bucky quietly asked. The chair was slightly tilted back, making Bucky’s lap a perfect angle for you to carefully sit on. Your mouth curled up as you nodded at him. Your average size figure parked yourself on top of Bucky’s lap, your legs hanging off the side as you wrapped an arm around his shoulder.

The dentist walked back in with her tools, making Bucky tense even more. Steve sat quietly on Bucky’s side, rubbing his shoulder.

“Okay I’m going to have a look right now, nothing else.” She said as she showed Bucky the mini mirror. He nodded. She didn’t bother to put on a mask or wear gloves, with the fear of triggering Bucky. She handed you the smallest flashlight you’d ever seen in your life. “Can you please shine this into his mouth so I can see? I don’t want to use the overhead light, okay?” You nodded, as you shined it in his mouth as you continued to sit on his lap.

“I just need to you open for me now, Bucky. I will not touch anything or hurt you, I promise.” She spoke. You felt his body tense even more, before he eventually opened his mouth for her. His eyes were filled with horror yet again, as you put your hand on his upper bicep. You watched as the mini mirror traveled around his mouth, seeing more of his teeth you couldn’t before. You felt bad watching, but you had nowhere else to look. You felt so bad for him, you knew he was going to need a good amount of work done. You didn’t know how any of this was going to go, though.

“Okay!” She grabbed the flashlight from your hands, as she finished looking in his mouth. You could tell that Bucky’s tongue was going crazy in his mouth as if he were feeling all of them. She rolled her stool so that she was in front of Bucky again. “I can help you Bucky. By that I mean I can make sure you don’t feel a thing, and we can fix up all your teeth for you.”

His breathing got shaky again. “How” he asked without tone. She looked at you and Steve, then back at Bucky before starting to explain everything.

“Anesthesia. It’ll knock you out, you don’t have to be awake. You’ll wake back up with your teeth all fixed. Your friends can stay here the entire time.”

“How long will that take?” You softly asked.

“I can fix all the chipped teeth today in an hour. The missing ones that need to be replaced will be longer, as it requires more steps. He’s missing 3 teeth, so maybe 2 hours on top of that. 3 hours total for it.”

“Do it.” Bucky muttered out suddenly.

“Alright Bucky we can definitely help you out today. Is that would you would like for us to do?” He nodded at her question. “Yes please.”

“Okay.” She left the room yet again to retrieve more supplies. You were sitting on Bucky’s lap. He pulled you in for a hug, it was so tight you could not move. You hugged back, you felt the fear coarse through his body. “It’s going to be okay” you whispered in his ear. “You are so brave, you are so strong, you are doing so well.” He didn’t reply to your comment.

Steve remained a quiet presence next to Bucky. He just observed and watched you and Bucky interact like he’s never seen before.

“We’re going to get started.” The dentist came back with an IV hookup, wheeling it right behind Bucky.

“Oh my god” Bucky was panicking again. You stroked his cheek trying to soothe him.

“I’m sorry to scare you with this, it’s just how the anesthesia has to be induced. I’m going to insert an IV into your arm, which will allow it to put you out, okay?”

“Okay okay, please hurry.”

“Y/N sorry I am going to need you off of him, I need him relaxed during this.” You nodded as you slid off his lap. You placed your body right next to him still, playing with his long, dark hair.

“Alright, here goes the IV.” Bucky closed his eyes and bit down harshly as the IV entered his arm. Your face was just barely touching his, you did everything in your power to calm him down.

“It's in. I am going to start now.” Her eyes met Bucky’s as she spoke “Five, four, three-” He was out by the time she reached 2. Bucky was out like a light, his helpless body made you really sad. You couldn’t help but think of all the horrible things that he’s had to go through. You took a seat next to Steve, resting your head on his shoulder.

“What’s wrong, Y/N?” Steve could very clearly read your facial expression.

“I just feel so bad for him. I can’t help but look at him and think of what horrible things he’s gone through. Why is he missing teeth? Why are so many of them chipped? It makes my stomach hurt so horribly.” You started to tear up talking about it. You cared for Bucky in a way you didn’t even realize you did.

Steve’s eyes got cold, as he took in what you just said. “I know, Y/N. I think about it everyday. I’ve wanted to help him for so long now, he just won’t let me. It wasn’t until he met you when he started to open up and be more compliant. If you weren’t here right now, there’s no way I would have gotten him here.” This comment made you smile through your tears. “I just want to help.” You replied. Steve put his hand on your leg, “Me too.”

The three hours passed, and Bucky was slowly waking up from the procedure. You stood up when you saw him moving. You grabbed his one hand, while putting your other hand on his head, stroking his hair. His eyes slowly opened, as he tried to figure out where he was. The dentist was sitting right behind you and him, observing as he awoke. “Bucky, you are safe. You are not in any harm. Steve and Y/N are right here. You are currently at the dentist, you just had your teeth worked on.” Her soothing voice explained to him. He tried to sit up in the chair, to which you and the dentist carefully helped him up. The chair was at a 90 degree angle, therefore you crouched in front of him, so that he was looking at you. You carefully guided his face to meet yours, eyes meeting as well. You gave him your warmest smile, “Hi.”

“Y/N” he fell into you, you just held him close. Your hand lightly stroked the back of his head, “You’re safe, Buck. I’m here. Steve is here. No one is trying to hurt you, it’s okay. Everything is over, you’re going to be okay.” You whispered into his ear. He pulled you even tighter, feeling safe in your embrace.

“He’s going to be a little loopy the next few hours. He shouldn’t be in any pain, just tired. Please keep him company until he’s conscious and aware. This state of mind has the possibility to trigger something not good.” The dentist was telling Steve.

He nodded at her. “Thank you so much.” You and Steve were eternally grateful for this woman, who just had to deal with one of the most difficult people. Her patience and understanding made this experience so much smoother.

“Come on, Buck. We gotta go” you said to him, lifting him up to a sitting position. With your and Steve’s help, Bucky managed to get himself out of the chair, out of the building and into the car.

You made it back to the Avengers tower, as you carried Bucky back to his room. Yes, you were strong enough to pick up the super soldier. Steve was close behind you as you made your way to Bucky’s room. You carefully placed him on his bed, getting him comfortable to sleep. He was in and out of sleep during this time.

“You want to watch over him?” You asked Steve. He slyly smiled at you. “No. I think he’d rather wake up to you being here with him than me.” He wasn’t being bitter, he was speaking the truth. “Okay Steve if you’re sure. If I need you though can you be close?” You quietly asked. He nodded, as he walked out of the room leaving you and Bucky alone.

He laid down in the bed while you sat next to him on the bed. His arms stretched out until he felt you, to which he then pulled you closer. He tried to speak, but due to the mouthpiece the dentist placed in his mouth so he wouldn’t bite down on his teeth, it didn’t exactly come out correctly. You managed to understand him, in which he said “stay with me”. This made your heart flutter. Did he see me in a way that wasn’t friends? Why did Steve say he’d rather wake up to me than him? Your thoughts were going crazy.

He began to wake up, as he brought his hand to his mouth, trying to remove the mouthpiece. You carefully moved his hands away, “You gotta keep that in there for now okay?” He was playing around with it in his mouth. “I ju nee ‘o ‘alk.” You figured out he was telling you he needed to say something. “Okay. Open.” He did so and you removed the saliva drenched piece of plastic from his mouth.

“What’s up Buck?” You asked. His arms were still wrapped around your torso.

“I-” he started. “Am in awe of you.” You looked down at him, him expressionless.

“What do you mean?” You got a little closer to him.

“Why are you so good to me. You are the kindest person I’ve ever met in my entire life, and I’m nearing 100. My heart soars when I’m in the same room as you. I get so nervous around you, that I barely speak to you.” His emotionless face was turning into a happy one. He fell silent.

“Really?” Your voice was a bit shaky, on the verge of tears.

“Please don’t cry love it’s okay.” He brought his flesh arm to your cheeks, wiping them.

“Buck, I had no idea you felt this way.”

His mouth opened a little as he threw his head back into his pillow. “You don’t see me in that way, do you. I don’t blame you.”

“Oh my god no Buck, I-” you couldn’t find your words.

He put his hands over his face, turning red from embarrassment. You carefully lifted them up with yours, moving your face to be directly in front of his. “Bucky?”

He looked up at you with sad eyes, which was making your heart break. “I feel the same.” You finally spit out. His eyes got wide, keeping them fixed on yours.

“I’ve always cared for you, Buck. Ever since you got here. I’ve admired you and been intrigued by you. You barely talk to me, I wasn’t sure if you even liked me.” He started to cry at your response. It was definitely the heavy medication, but this was also a sensitive topic for him.

“Come here, lay with me.” He continued to pull on your body, until you finally gave in and snuggled in next to him. You rested your head on his strong, thick chest. He was holding you in so close you thought you were going to burst.

“Wait,” you said as you rolled over to the nightstand to grab the plastic mouthpiece. “You need to keep this in okay? It’s so you don’t bite too hard and damage your teeth.”

“No I don’t want it.” he was sleepily arguing.

“Buck, open your mouth please.” you patiently waited.  

“Do it for me I’m too tired.” He replied.

You shrugged, using your hands to open his mouth and place the plastic piece to fit perfectly against his new teeth. “You keep it there okay, it’s for the best.” He nodded. Moments following this, he drifted off into a deep slumber, as you drifted off with him.

The both of you slept through till late afternoon, you laying with him keeping him company. You awoke to Bucky squirming in the bed.

“Y/N????” He managed to get out with the mouthpiece in. His voice was questioning and his face was confused. You were trying to shake yourself asleep, trying to read him.

“Bucky hi” you replied, not really noticing or paying attention to his face or tone.

“Wha, are you ‘oing?” He asked. You lifted your head to look at his face, seeing the utter confusion across his soft face. This made you jump out of the bed, almost falling onto the floor. He looked almost embarrassed, like he kind of knew, but also didn’t. He brought his hand to his mouth, almost ripping the mouthpiece out.

“You gotta keep that in Buck, dentist’s orders.” You sternly told him. You started to realize that he might not actually remember what happened today. His brain wasn’t capable of holding memories sometimes, and this was probably the case here. You felt hurt that he was acting like this, but you also understood and remained patient.

He took the mouthpiece out anyways, so he could talk. He looked at it with disgust, placing it on the nightstand. “Why are you laying in bed with me, Y/N.” His voice lacked tone, which almost made this worse. You sighed, bringing your head to your arms that were resting on your thighs.

“What do you remember about today, Buck?” you carefully asked.

“I remember driving in the car with you and Steve. Everything else after that is, blank.”

It was obvious he dissociated at some point, because he didn’t remember any of the initial appointment before he got knocked out.

“What is that plastic thing? And why’s it in my mouth?” He looked slightly horrified.

“Do you remember chipping your tooth this morning?”

“Yeah.”

“Okay. Steve and I took you to a dentist, she helped you. She fixed a lot of your teeth, she put you under anesthesia so you wouldn’t feel any pain. Your teeth are fixed.” You replied. Bucky started to feel around his mouth with his tongue. He noticed there were teeth where they hadn’t used to be. The chipped ones were full length. He sprung up and ran into the bathroom. He was examining his teeth, pulling back his lips and using his fingers to make his mouth wider.

“Oh my god.” You heard him say. You stayed sitting on the bed, not wanting to overwhelm him. He turned around to look at you, his eyes filled with tears. You smiled and nodded at him. He looked happy, and the tears were good ones.

“Y/N they’re fixed oh my god. I can't believe it.” He continued on.

“Yeah Buck. Are you in any pain? The dentist said you shouldn’t be, but I just wanna make sure.”

“No, no pain.” You nodded at him. His thoughts transferred over to you, wondering why you had been sleeping in the bed with him.

“What happened after, I, woke up?” His voice was slightly trembling.

“Uh, Steve and I got you home. You asked me to stay with you, so I did.” You chuckled a little, remembering how he adorably told you he adored you. He slowly nodded, he was biting his lips a little.

“What else did I say” he spoke to you quietly.

You looked up at him, with heart eyes. “You told me you adored me, Buck. That, you get nervous around me. That you find yourself not talking to me because of it. That, your heart soars when you see me.” You were bright red from embarrassment. His face looked relaxed as you spoke, the memory coming back to him.

“Then you told me you felt the same.” He spoke out of nowhere. You nodded at him. “I remember.”

Your eyes began to fill up with tears as well, as he walked over to you and sat next to you on the bed.

“I meant it. Just because I was under drugs doesn’t mean it wasn’t real. It was, it is. I’m sorry it took me being like that to finally tell you. You make me so nervous.” His gaze was fixated on his hands. You placed your hand on his back, slowly rubbing it.

“It’s okay. I’m just happy you finally told me.” He placed his metal arm around you, pulling you in close.

Footsteps approached as Steve walking into the room. His face lit up at the sight of you and Bucky sitting close together. “How are you doing Buck?”

“I’m good Steve, thank you.” Steve flashed Bucky a warm smile. “I don’t mean to be a dad, but you gotta keep the mouthpiece in.”

“Why? What is it doing?” Bucky was curious, and slightly annoyed.

“The dentist told me it’s so that you don’t bite down so hard that you break the tooth. The ones she fixed are still sensitive and a hard bite down can crack them again. The mouthpiece is to help separate your teeth so you aren’t biting on them.”

“Alright Dr. Dentist Steve.” Bucky was being sarcastic. Steve shot him an amused look. “Please.” Steve asked again.

“Fine.” Bucky reached over and put the plastic piece back in his mouth. He bared his teeth at Steve with the piece in his mouth.

“Thank you.” Steve said, as he started to walk out of the room, leaving you and Bucky alone again. Bucky removed the plastic piece again so he could continue talking to you.

“I didn’t even know if you had teeth before today.” Your comment made his face grow confused. “What?”

“I’ve never seen you smile before. Not even like a toothless smile, like I legit didn’t know if there were any teeth in your mouth.”

“Ah, yeah, well.” He shrugged. “When you have a mouth full of broken glass you kinda don’t wanna show it to the world.”

You nodded. “I understand. It’s okay. They look really good now, though.” This made Bucky actually smile, with teeth.

“Oh my god you’re so cute. I wish you’d smile more.”

“I will now.” You raised your hand to stroke his cheek.

Summary: Kyle finally returns home from a year abroad.

There’s an uncomfortable buzz of anticipation shelved in the back of Stan’s brain as he turns onto the main road, his fingers tapping idly along to the crackling radio. Home for all of six hours, there’s a lot that Stan can’t wait to show Kyle upon his eventual homecoming from a year abroad in Germany. He wonders whether to lead with his newly-chipped front tooth, courtesy of the only hockey game he neglected to wear a mouth guard, or the outline of an eventually complete tattoo on his left arm. Neither will matter; the first thing Kyle is sure to notice is that Stan is finally sporting an adult haircut. It’s nothing special -- just exceptionally short. More of an overgrown crew cut than anything. The wind brushes his bare forehead and he reaches to part the spindly wraith of where bangs used to be.

His phone buzzes with a text from Kyle.

My mother is driving me crazy. Please hurry.

Stan grins to himself and assures Kyle that he’s on the way, hoping that the hasty cleaning of his car done beforehand is enough to prevent too big a hissy fit about it. He thinks as such before knocking an empty and forgotten coffee cup beneath the passenger seat at a red light.

Ike is the first to answer when Stan rings the doorbell; he’s seventeen now with all the acne to prove it, the budding facial hair along his chin that’s as ordinary and ugly as it is exceptionally disconcerting. He listlessly invites Stan to wait inside while Kyle remains holed up in the bathroom.

Gerald flicks a newspaper corner in his direction as a greeting; Sheila wanders in from the kitchen and gives Stan a terse nod of acknowledgment, her cherubic hands pruned with dishwater. They exchange half-hearted pleasantries about the weather, the news, a shared eagerness in having Kyle home, and Ike makes sure his performative grunt of irritation is heard. Though he’s not sure when it started, there’s a tightrope balance to maintaining friendliness with Kyle’s mother now – as if any moment he may be ushered from their home by a wicker broom out into the street like a mangy cat. She suddenly insists on calling him ‘Stanley’ and remarks about his tattoo. She calls it “interesting” and nothing more.

Kyle emerges from the bathroom about five minutes later. Shower gel and shaving cream follows him, as does an air of humidity. He fiddles with minor details of his outfit when ambling through the hall before noticing Stan.

“Your hair!”

Stan smiles and runs his fingers through what little of it is left. “You like it?”

Kyle smiles ear to ear before declaring that he hates it.

He playfully gives Stan’s cheek two gentle slaps, hand falling to his shoulder. “I liked your hair long,” Kyle says. “You don’t even look like you anymore.”

“I could say the same to you,” Stan smirks, directing his attention to Kyle’s perfectly coiffed and incredibly stylish undercut. Kyle asks if it looks stupid, to which Stan assures him that it doesn’t. It looks very nice on him. By far, it’s the most fashionable aspect about him – the rest of Kyle clad in the same oversized earth-tone flannel shirt he’s owned since ninth grade, scuffed ankle boots, and a charcoal pair of jeans that are looking a little worse for wear.

The lingering distance dissipates between them in a quick hug; Kyle collects his things with Sheila warbling about their whereabouts from the other room, Stan not protesting as he is carelessly rushed out the door.

Kyle is immediately drawn to the tattoo once outside, taking Stan’s arm and examining it with clinical fervor in the flood of porchlight. He asks what it is.

“A rabbit smoking a pipe,” Stan says.

Kyle turns Stan’s arm at an angle once, twice, releasing the sturdy grip on his flesh. He nods. “Interesting,” he says.

They head to the new and improved Shakey’s, which is neither new nor improved but rather under different management; such management includes the obtaining of a liquor license and excommunicating itself of its titular mascot, which makes Stan both relieved and slightly sad. Several of the overhead lights are burnt out, a dim fog of body heat and grime nesting in every small nook, the floors still sticky as ever. A backwoods baby blanket of childhood baseball games and poorly planned birthday parties. They order a large cheese pizza and a pitcher of beer.

It’s still surreal to be sitting with Kyle again – to be able to see and hear him clearly. Though he understood, it was difficult for Stan to cosign to a year of dwindling phone calls and video chats, to a blurry, garbled visage of Kyle that lived on in his cell phone or webcam that may be disconnected at a moment’s notice. A year seemed intolerable, and far too long to live with the phantom ache of reaching for Kyle only to find him missing. Fostering companionship in others was futile; it was a stark realization on just how little he confided in anyone else. His first sip of beer is cold and crisp and tastes both familiar and brand new.

Obligatory small talk and catch-up questions out of the way, the two fall into the familiar rhythm of silent communication: pointed flickers toward the homey rednecks worthy of their ridicule and concealed snorts, jested kicks beneath the table, cheeks burning bright and eyes filled with light. Stan tells a joke and Kyle grasps breathlessly at his arm as he laughs. Every touch feels so good it hurts.

Kyle pecks his pizza like a sheepish bird, but with encouragement to drink he becomes equally greedy as Stan, the two of them batting greasy fingers at each other like when they were teenagers calling dibs on the unevenly large slices, ready to pounce if the other tries taking more than his fair share. Stan smiles and stares, feeling prematurely drunk. Kyle asks a defensive, “What?” as a long sliver of mozzarella falls from his lips; Stan only shakes his head and grins.

He has a fresh bite in his mouth when Kyle reaches across the table and snatches his chin. He commands Stan to swallow immediately and show his teeth, which he does.

“Christ, what did you do to your beautiful teeth!”

“It’s one tooth,” Stan says. “Hockey.”

Kyle’s internal ticker begins to rattle off, flailing his arms in fury over what a stupid and dangerous sport it is – how it’s bad enough that Stan feels the need to play, but he’s also the reason Ike plays now too, so he’s basically the only responsible party if any injury befalls him – and speaking of responsibility, to be so irresponsible as to forget his mouth guard? What was he thinking? Does he know how much worse he could’ve been hurt?

Stan patiently waits for Kyle to exhaust himself. He does so quite dramatically, flopping back into the booth with a dissatisfied puff. Stan smiles sweetly.

“It’s not that bad, and I’m getting it fixed,” he says. “You don’t need to worry so much.”

Kyle hardens. “Well, I do worry about you,” he says, quiet. His gaze briefly pans to the other side of the restaurant before returning to Stan, holding his drink close without sipping from it. For a moment, Stan wishes to preserve him in exactly this way – loving scowl, knobby knuckles curled around glass, gap teeth bit down on his bottom lip. “And don’t tell me what to do. I’ll worry about you as much as I goddamn please.”

Stan grins and accepts this as an inevitability.

Soon after, he regales Stan with stories of Germany: no tipping the waiter, nothing open on Sundays, the electrifying terror of driving on the Autobahn. It amuses him greatly to admire all the little ways Kyle is both inconvenienced, fascinated and utterly irritated by arbitrary social conventions, exhausting himself regardless of whether he chooses to defy or comply with them, his curious fixation with their very existence reading as evidence to something greater of who Kyle is as a person – though, of what, Stan isn’t sure. All he knows is it makes Kyle very interesting to listen to.

Stan is responsive to the intricate cultural comparisons, albeit only mildly until Kyle makes mention of a man named Lukas. A friend of his host family. He’s expecting the bomb before Kyle drops it; Stan isn’t sure when or where his odd possessiveness of Kyle first emerged, but it beats tried and true as ever, hallowed in his chest by mention of the man being six years older. Kyle insists it wasn’t ‘weird’ or ‘manipulative’ or any of Stan’s other fears – Lukas made the whole experience all the richer. Lukas was sweet. This is worse somehow.

And then the conversation of romance turns its head to Stan. Kyle asks about Andrew. Though, he doesn’t address him as such. Andrew, to Kyle, is “that swimmer, or whatever he was” and nothing more.

Stan says shakes his head and sips his beer. It’s a slightly tender wound that Kyle jumps to salt almost immediately. He raps his nails against the table, obviously waiting to be given the gory details, an unabashed lust for melodrama. The real story is far less glamourous. A nice girl from his botany class who frequently loaned him pens pulled him aside before class several weeks before and informed him that she saw Andrew with his tongue in the mouth of some unrecognizable stranger the night before. It took Stan an additional week to confront him about it. Easily the most upsetting part of the whole ordeal was the ease and unrepentance of Andrew’s confession to it and the months-long secrecy behind it. Reliving it in technicolor vividness makes Stan feel foreign in his own skin.

“That’s it?” Kyle asks, incredulous. “He was just out with some other dude at a party? Not even trying to hide?”

“Yeah.”

“God, what a dick.”

“Yeah. But I liked him, y’know.”

“Oh, I know… and I’m sorry, I guess. He was a dick though. I could tell from the moment I met him – when he told me he liked Bukowski, I was, like, ‘Oh, I bet this guy’s a dick.’”

“You think every guy I date is a dick.”

Kyle snorts. “Yeah, because they usually are. I swear, Stanley, you have the worst taste in men.”

Stan nods reluctantly. Andrew did cheat on him, so it’s not as if Kyle is wrong. He isn’t privy to the consequences of wrongness with the same triage as Stan. He thought to be suspicious when he still wouldn’t say “I love you” after six months of dating; everyone assured him he was merely being paranoid. And sure, maybe he was, but it wasn’t for no reason, he wasn’t simply imagining things, but he felt a need to—

“You can do better, dude,” Kyle says, furrowing his brow, a crown of righteous indignation atop his head on Stan’s behalf. He offers a tender touch of the hand, a thin sheen of pizza grease still coating his fingers. His eyes soften. The overhead light makes Kyle look like an angel. Stan feels something dizzy stir in his stomach. “Way better.”

He thanks Kyle and they polish what’s left of the lukewarm beer, leaving their money on the table.

In the parking lot, they sit in Stan’s car with the radio on and the windows down. He’s a little buzzed but decent to drive, though he finds it best to wait given the unmarked police car across the street, not wanting to end on a dour note with an arrest. Wind blows steady and cool with the suggestion of a possible storm in the coming days. Kyle doesn’t argue over Stan’s choice of music, and the delicate bleating of an acoustic guitar serves as a lovely if ominous backdrop to the brisk bite in the air.

A year in Germany has only exacerbated Kyle’s smoking habit, and he offers a cigarette to Stan before pulling back in embarrassment.

“Shit, sorry,” he mumbles. His cigarette hovers near the opening of the pack without being tucked away. “I shouldn’t even be smoking around you.”

“It’s okay,” Stan says. “I don’t mind.”

“No, it’s not – God.”

“Dude, I haven’t had an asthma attack in four years. Really, it’s okay.”

Kyle apprehensively twirls the cigarette in his fingers. Stan can tell he’s itching for the relief of nicotine – unable to smoke at home for fear Sheila might catch and promptly berate him – but continues to stare at Stan with lilted worry. Stan scoffs and shakes his head; he reaches for Kyle’s lighter and sparks it for him, the flicker of fire illuminating Kyle’s short and uneven lashes.

Kyle smolders and leans towards the flame. “You’re so good to me.”

Though he isn’t sure when, the smell of cigarette smoke, particularly when mingled with the aura of belonging to Kyle, had transformed from something previously chemical and unpleasant. It was homey now. A familiar pillar to the foundation of his life, like the endless drift of pine needles and gasoline, effervescent chill of snow on his bedroom window, the bellowing of his parents arguing through paper-thin walls. Something that could always be relied on as a universal constant.

He watches Kyle drag and sigh and wave his emphatic hand while he prattles on about the arduous event his mother made of picking him up from the airport, but Stan has trouble paying attention. There’s something even more captivating about the sharp curvatures of Kyle’s face in low light, the wet shine to his teeth when he delights himself with a particularly funny observation. He finds himself wanting nothing more than to kiss Kyle, but beyond that, to allow his face as close to Kyle’s as possible in a dangerous precursor. Just to be close. Very close. So he does, touch-starved and aching and utterly helpless to the allure of self-destruction.

Kyle asks what it is that Stan is doing.

And Stan finds himself kissing Kyle’s cheek before his brain has made any conscious decision to do so. It’s soft and chaste and fearfully quick. It’s the only way he knows to address this benevolent, pernicious connection between them that refuses to be severed, come hell or highwater. Or Germany.

Kyle blinks, oblivious and dumbfounded. Stan’s heart sits crooked in his chest doing its best to find any way to contort itself in search of relief.

“Stan, I, uh.” Kyle murmurs, his voice a gravelly whisper. He laughs to himself and Stan fears it to be mean. Kyle flickers him a glance. “You don’t want this,” he says. He sounds pensive and sad. “Me, y’know.”

“Yeah, I do.”

“No, you don’t. You can do better.”

“No. I can’t.”

It’s an admission that leaves a hot tickle in some part of his body indistinguishable from his heart or his stomach.

Kyle doesn’t speak right away. He swallows, saliva bobbing in his throat, staring out the windshield until he repeats Stan’s name again, twice, three times in a daze, and its everything he finds himself ever wanting to hear – his name said with that exact inflection of confusion and desperation and loving fondness.

Stan goes for his cheek once more and finds himself on Kyle’s lips instead. He gives a low whine against Stan’s mouth, accepting the first timid brush of Stan’s tongue; it feels so good it hurts. Kyle nips at him eagerly. It’s a gentle stasis, slow and warm and on the brink of collapse at any moment.

Kyle pulls back first. He clears his throat and drags on his cigarette, letting the smoke escape through his nose. Stan tries to find where exactly it is that he buried his voice. “Is, uh. Is this a date now?”

“Do you want it to be?”

Stan is thrown by the question. Kyle looks at him with obvious curiosity; his tone is void of its usual smarmy sarcasm, plain and honest, as if asking whether or not he should be anticipating rain later of if he has something stuck in his teeth. He shouldn’t, and he doesn’t, and Stan is unsure how to respond. He stares beyond Kyle’s eyes with a hand still gripping to a gelled patch of his hair.

“I missed you,” he breaths.

“I missed you too,” Kyle says. He pensively bites on his bottom lip before pawing at Stan’s face, fingers tracing the curve of the shell of his ear. The heat of burning ash radiates against his skin. “I missed you so fucking much, Stan.”

They spend a minute or two like that: hands wandering around the other, foreheads almost touching, but not quite. It’s a culmination of all the years Stan stole little moments, because that was all he had and would be given – hands brushing together, slightly-too-long hugs, drunk over-affection, one of Kyle’s angular hands soothing his back during a two-a.m. meltdown while the other hastily wiped at Stan’s wet eyes, gentle but firm yet exhausted commands to stop crying. He’s not sure how he’s been able to go this long without allowing it a name; he’s terrified of possibly having to continue it this way.

“Say something romantic to me in German,” he asks. It’s all he can think of.

“It’s not that kind of language,” Kyle says through a grin. “It’s not romantic at all.”

Kyle pulls away to savor what’s left of his almost-extinguished cigarette; he flicks the filter beneath the neon storefront, blustering the acidic fog of smoke out the window.

“Can we go back to your house?” Kyle asks. He bats his eyes at Stan, fiddling with the folded cuffs of his pants. “I’m so tired. I’m still kind of jet-lagged.”

Stan smirks, newly emboldened by Kyle’s indirect shyness. “And you wanna sleep in my bed?” he muses.

Kyle rolls his eyes and sighs with a lofty hue. “If you’ll have me.”

Stan grins, laughing. “Of course,” he says. “You’re the only one I would.”

Tarot: 3--The Empress

Summary: A/B/O AU. Sherry gets Olivia settled in, she meets Frankie, and has dinner with Negan.

A/N: Been a little slow writing of late, but I’m already working on the next chapter!

The Empress is traditionally associated with maternal influence, it is the card if you are hoping to start a family. She can represent the creation of life, romance, art, or new business.

Sherry led Olivia through the lounge to a hallway lined with doors. Most of them were closed, though a couple stood cracked open, allowing her to see into fairly well appointed bedrooms. Sherry pointed to one of the closed doors.

“This one’s me,” she told her, and opened the next door. “And this will be you.”

The room was plain, which didn’t surprise her. It had been unoccupied for some time, after all. There was a dresser, a small table serving as a desk, and a double bed with cobbled-together bedclothes. It was better than anything she’d had since the world ended.

“Thank you,” she said, looking up at Sherry.

Sherry chuckled, ruffling her hair. “It’s not much, but once you start earning points you’ll be able to fix it up a little. I can help with that if you promise not to tell Negan,” she winked.

Olivia grinned a bit. “Won’t say a word,” she promised, taking a tentative step inside the room. There was no lock on the door, she noticed, but it still felt safer than most places she’d been. The windows were set high in the wall, too small for someone to climb into. She could barricade the door if need be. She shook herself. She was safe here. She didn’t need to think that way.

“We’ll go ahead and get you some fresh clothes, and a shower. I’m sure you’re dying for both,” Sherry said, leaning on the doorframe.

She nodded eagerly. “I am. I feel like I’m crawling out of my skin.” She was also desperate to lessen her scent. Any Alpha close to her would know what she was, but a proper shower, with soap and maybe even perfume, would make it a little less obvious. She hesitated, glancing at Sherry’s outfit. “Do I… have to wear a dress and heels?”

Sherry laughed, shaking her head. “This is just for wives,” she said. “So, advantage or drawback depending on your point of view.”

“I’ve never been much on heels,” Olivia confessed. “I can’t move in them very well.” She wondered, perhaps uncharitably, if that was why Negan liked his wives in them.

“No one can,” Sherry smirked. “Honestly half the time I just have on slippers and save these stupid things for public purposes. But I’ll grab you a few changes of clothes, and some shoes. What’s Negan going to put you to work doing? Did he say?”

Olivia nodded. “I used to be a nurse. So he’s going to have me working in the infirmary. Starting tomorrow I guess.”

Sherry raised an eyebrow. “Huh, that should pay a lot of points. So you should be pretty good as far as the essentials.”

“Hopefully. I’ll be out for a week every month,” she sighed. “Without suppressants it’s hard to get out of bed, much less to try to work. Not to mention being around other people.”

“Well, Negan’s sure not going to let you go roaming around if you’re in heat,” Sherry agreed, sympathetically.

Olivia frowned a bit. “I’m pretty sure he thinks he’s going to mate me.” He would be a safe choice in some ways. He was dangerous, but he was strong. More than equal to the task of keeping her safe, considering what he’d built with Sanctuary. Still, the thought frightened her.

“Probably so,” Sherry said. “But he’s under the impression he’s irresistible. My advice? Even if you decide to say yes to him, make him work for it some.” She gave Olivia a sharp-toothed grin. “He doesn’t force anyone to be his wife, but there are undeniable benefits all of us take advantage of for one reason or another. And Alpha and Beta females aren’t in terribly short supply. You, little Omega, are unique. Don’t let him forget that.”

“I don’t know if I want to say yes,” she admitted. “He scares me.”

Sherry nodded. “He should. He’s dangerous. But if you’re his, he’ll put that toward making sure you’re safe. And he’s good to us.”

“As long as you obey him?” Olivia let a little sourness creep into her voice.

“Well,” Sherry sighed. “I won’t deny that he likes being in charge. He likes people to be afraid of him, he likes people to obey him, and yes, he likes having a harem of wives. But,” she tapped the tip of Olivia’s nose with a long, elegant finger. “He’s good to us. And he’s not usually very hard on his wives.”

She thought about responding to the ‘very hard’ part, but chose not to. Sherry was being kind to her, and she didn’t want to seem ungrateful. Even so she couldn’t help but muse that even a gilded cage was still a prison. Then again, what alternative was there?

“Hey,” Sherry’s voice cut into her thoughts. Olivia looked up, and the other woman smiled. “Cheer up, sweetie. You’re going to be fine, I promise.”

Olivia nodded, giving her a small smile. “Thanks,” she said softly.

“Now, I’m going to get you some fresh clothes, and we’ll find you some things for a nice bath. That’s generally warmer than a shower around here.” She winked. “You say yes to Negan and sometimes he lets you use his bathroom. He usually has hot water.”

Of course he did. Rather than say anything, Olivia just nodded again.

Sherry ruffled her hair. “Sit tight. I’ll be back in a few.”

Olivia sat down on the bed once Sherry had gone, not sure what else to do. Any belongings she had were left back with her old community, so there was nothing to put away. Nothing to rearrange. Biting her lip, she pulled her knees to her chest, feeling alone.

It was better than being with Kevin, she reminded herself. At least Negan gave her a little bit of choice. And, if she were to believe him, safety. When Kevin found out she was an Omega, it was almost as though dollar signs lit up in his eyes. She’d ceased to be a person, and had become a bargaining chip. Chattel. She wasn’t sure if it was better than him claiming her or not. In her situation it seemed likely that in the end Negan would end up knotting and mating her. Sherry had been reassuring, so maybe--just maybe-- he wouldn’t be cruel. But she’d had more than enough of Alphas who wanted more than she was willing to give. It seemed almost inevitable that most of them wound up violent.

She might have ended up brooding until Sherry returned, if there hadn’t been a knock on her door. She approached cautiously, afraid it was going to be Amber back to torment her. Instead, it was the woman Negan had introduced as Frankie.

The other redhead smiled. “Hi,” she said.

“H-hello?” Olivia still felt more than a little nervous. She didn’t want to alienate her suite-mates (other than Amber), but she didn’t know what the other woman could want.

Frankie seemed fairly relaxed, however. Her smile only widened, crinkling her nose. “Hey, sorry if you want to be alone,” she said. “I just wanted to say a proper hello. Sherry kinda tucked you under her wing and ran off with you.” She giggled softly. “She does that.” Frankie put out a hand. “I’m Frankie. The other ginger,” she said drily.

Her charm was disarming, and Olivia smiled, taking her hand. “Olivia. The Omega. Since that seems to be my claim to fame.”

Frankie nodded, almost eagerly. “Yeah. So I heard from Amber’s bitching.” She leaned against the doorjamb. “So, sorry about that. Amber…” She shook her head. “She’s kinda a trainwreck. The whole apocalypse thing fucked her up. Try not to pay her any mind.”

Olivia shrugged. “Wasn’t planning on it.”

“Good call,” the other redhead chuckled. “Anyhow, look, I did want to let you know I used to be a massage therapist. And we took classes on Omegas in heat. So if you need some help once that rolls around, and you’re not a new wife…” she trailed off, glancing over with narrowed eyes.

Olivia frowned slightly. The offer was a good one. Perhaps a little too good, now that the world had ended. No one did things as favors anymore. She hesitated. “In exchange for what?” she asked, cautiously.

“Nothing much,” Frankie said earnestly. “I didn’t really mean it like a Godfather favor or anything.” Her cheeks turned pink as she looked down. “Just, you know. More an open-ended thing. Like watching each other’s backs and helping each other out if we need it.”

“I can’t tell if you’re flirting with me or trying to ask for an alibi,” Olivia said after a moment.

Frankie laughed. “You’re so suspicious. I’m just trying to be friendly. We’re all in here together so helping each other out is for the best, you know?”

Olivia relaxed a little, chuckling. “Yeah… sorry. It’s been rough for a while. It’s hard to trust anyone. Even a Beta female.”

“Yeah, I bet,” Frankie said softly. “You’re lucky you made it this long without something awful happening.”

She couldn’t quite meet the other woman’s eyes. “Plenty awful happened,” she said. “But I didn’t get killed or forced into mating. So there’s that.”

Frankie nodded. “That’s good, hon,” she said gently. “And you’re safe now. Nobody’s going to cross Negan. Even if you aren’t a wife.”

“That’s what I keep hearing,” she replied, sighing.

“God, you too?” Amber’s sneering voice made Frankie turn. The blonde was standing in the hallway, arms crossed. She wrinkled her nose. “She’s short and weak and she stinks,” she continued. “And she’s only here because Negan wants to knot her.”

This time there was no Alpha to hold her back. Olivia growled. “You spend weeks in the woods and see how nice you smell,” she shot back. “And keep running your mouth and we’ll see who’s weak.” She chose to ignore the last part of Amber’s commentary. That, at least, she was pretty sure was right.

“Amber, having someone new here doesn’t mean there’s going to be less goodies for you,” Frankie cut in, her voice reasonable. “Olivia’s going to be working, so she’s not going to be taking anything meant for you anyway.” She arched an eyebrow. “And I don’t see why you’re acting so jealous. It’s not like you care if Negan sleeps with you or not.”

Amber sniffed, turning her nose up. “I don’t care if he’s panting after some Omega bitch. I just don’t think she should be here smelling up the place and getting a free ride. She ought to be out there with the rest of the workers if she thinks she’s too good to be a wife.”

Olivia’s nails bit into her palms. “I don’t think I’m ‘too good’,” she said, trying to keep her voice steady.

Frankie laid a hand on Olivia’s shoulder. “It’s different for Omegas than us Betas, you know that… It’s not something she can take back later…”

“So? Why’s she got to be here while she’s mulling it over?” Amber sneered.

“Because Negan said so.” Sherry’s voice cut through whatever Amber would have said next. She strode up the hall, a cloth tote slung over one shoulder, her expression hard. “That’s all you need to know, Amber. If you don’t like it, I’m sure you could take it up with him.”

Amber flinched at the suggestion. She cast a dirty look at Olivia, and tossed her hair. “Whatever,” she growled, stalking off to another room and slamming the door behind her.

Sherry sighed, rolling her eyes. “That woman has a real attitude problem,” she said. She smiled at Frankie. “Hope everyone else was getting along.”

Frankie grinned. “Yeah, so far so good,” she said, and patted Olivia’s shoulder. “I’ll leave you with the mother hen, but I’ll see you around later,” she said.

Olivia couldn’t help but chuckle, waving at Frankie headed back to the lounge.

Sherry passed her the bag. “I found you some clothes, and some soap and shampoo. Go ahead and get washed up, dinner should be here before too long.”

The bathroom Sherry showed her to was fairly spacious, and already stocked with towels. As she’d been warned, the water was on the tepid side, but she didn’t much care. It was the first time she’d had warm water and soap in so long she’d almost forgotten what it felt like.

Olivia scrubbed every inch of her skin, washed her hair, and luxuriated in the feeling of being clean. She felt much less self-conscious once she had washed up and put on fresh clothes. She thought most of what she had on was probably a loss, discolored by ground-in dirt and sweat and even blood. Even so, she bundled them together in the hopes that she might get them washed.

In the mirror she examined herself, frowning at her visible ribs and spine, and jutting hip bones. She might not have lasted long if she hadn’t wound up with a group. Still, the bruising across her back, ugly blue and purple stripes, reminded her she might not have lasted long with one either. Negan at least seemed like he’d be… well, perhaps not kind, but so far not abusive. And he’d been right; Sherry seemed like she would be in Olivia’s corner.

She chose a pair of soft drawstring pants and a tee shirt with a cartoon cat on it. The clothes were comfortable, if a bit large on her. Soon she was dressed and feeling better than she had in months. Her belly growled, and she remembered that Negan had promised food. Quickly stashing her new clothes in her new room, she headed down the hall.

Olivia could hear him before she got to the lounge. The baritone laugh carried down the hallway, along with the scent of something delicious. Despite her hunger, she approached cautiously, peering into the room from the doorway before she let her presence be known.

Negan sat on the couch, one arm thrown around Frankie’s shoulders. He’d left his leather jacket behind, still wearing that white tee that clung so enticingly to his chest. Lucille, the barbed-wire wrapped weapon, leaned against the wall next to the door. Even with his wives, he apparently didn’t go unarmed.

The other wives sat in chairs or at the bar with plates of food. Olivia’s jaw almost dropped as she finally recognized the smell of tomato sauce and realized Negan had brought honest-to-god spaghetti.

Negan paused, a beer bottle halfway to his lips, and his nostrils flared. He turned his head, dark eyes catching her, and grinned widely. “Well, hey there. No need to be shy, sweet thing. Come eat. You must be hungry.” He indicated the empty spot on the couch beside him. “I saved you a seat.”

She might have balked at his presumption, but she was hungry. She padded in, avoiding looking at Amber. Negan leaned down, opening the containers on the coffee table, and portioning a small serving of pasta and sauce onto a plate.

“I know you probably ain’t been fucking fed right for a while,” he said as she sank to the couch beside him. He handed her the plate and a fork with a smile. “So start with that. If you’re still hungry we can try a little more, but don’t eat yourself sick.”

She nodded, almost nervous that she would drop the plate. “Thank you,” she said softly.

Negan’s grin was toothy. “You’re welcome,” he paused, dark eyes dropping to her shirt, “Kitten,” he said, his voice a low and almost sensual rumble. He chuckled as her cheeks grew warm.

Olivia ducked her head and concentrated on her food so that she wouldn’t have to look at the large Alpha next to her. It took an effort to keep from wolfing her food down. After subsisting on canned food and foraging for so long, pasta that had actually been boiled, and sauce that was cooked tasted like heaven.

Sherry chuckled softly. “As I was saying, Negan, Olivia is settling in fine. I think you should let her rest a day or two before you put her to work, though.”

Olivia looked up, swallowing a mouthful of noodles. “N-no, I’ll be fine,” she protested. “I have to start earning points.”

Negan laughed again. “Well, you were right, Sherry, I owe you a beer,” he said. He looked over at Olivia with a smirk. “She said you’d say that. Don’t worry so much, Kitten. You can afford to coast a day or two.”

He gave her a teasing swat on the back. It wasn’t hard, by any means, nor was it malicious. It wouldn’t have hurt if she wasn’t covered in bruises.

Olivia flinched, as much in fear as pain, hunching her shoulders and yelping. She managed not to spill her plate, and managed to keep her seat. Negan froze, eyes widening in surprise. Then they narrowed, a dark fire behind them.

Sherry sat forward, putting her plate down. “Livvy, you okay?” she asked quickly.

Olivia made herself straighten up, forced a smile. She avoided looking at Negan directly. “Y-yeah. I’m okay. Sorry. Just a little sore.”

Negan’s mood never quite made it back to relaxed and jovial the rest of the meal. He smiled at their conversations, chuckled at Sherry’s jokes, pulled Frankie to his side teasingly. But something clearly stuck in his craw.

Olivia was afraid it was her. Negan didn’t try to touch her again, and when she emptied her first plate he was quite solicitous about being certain she got enough. He included her in the conversation, never probing too deeply, not mentioning her earlier reaction. Even so, she could feel the weight of his gaze on her.

Despite her worries, the time passed quickly, and soon enough she was yawning. Sherry chuckled.

“Come on, Liv. Let’s get you to bed,” she said.

Negan waved for her to stay. “I got it,” he said. He stood, holding a hand out to Olivia. “Come on, Kitten. I’ll tuck you in.”

She wanted to object. She knew the way back to her room, and she certainly didn’t need him to tuck anything in. But the heaviness of his dark eyes told her that he wasn’t asking. Swallowing, she took his hand and let him walk her down the hall.

Rhys practically ran into this apartment on Helios. His day had been too incredibly stressful and then he’d been cornered by an alpha on his way home. It was like they could tell he would be in heat soon. He slammed his door shut, locking it. His skin prickled, agitation coursing through him. With shaking hands, he went to the freezer to gorge on ice cream.

He was out of ice cream.

Rhys swore, feeling his resolve shattering. It would be okay, he’d just go to the blanket Timothy always used when he was over and he’d wrap himself in the alpha’s scent. They were only just dating, but they’d, but he’d been over enough that the blanket usually smelled incredible. He trudged to the couch and almost screamed.

The blanket was gone.

“What!? Where-” Tears filled his eyes. He remembered now. He’d spilled coffee on it and it had needed to be washed. He ran to the dryer and opened it, hoping there was still a trace of Tim. He only smelled detergent. Face buried in the soft material, Rhys sobbed.

He needed Tim, he was too stressed right now to recover properly. He wanted to hide in the safety of his closet and Tim. Slowly, he pulled up Tim’s number on his ECHO. He didn’t trust his voice, so he sent a text. He tried to keep it casual, but truthful.

Rhys cried a little harder as he informed Timothy about his ice cream debacle. Just salt on the wound. For a split moment as he waited for a response, he wondered if Tim would be irritated and not want to come over. They had only just had their fifth date, what if it was too sudden? He was Handsome Jack’s doppelganger, but Rhys had found him sweet and different from typical Hyperion alphas.

Worked up and terrified, he grabbed the blanket, along with any others he could hold. He went into his closet where he kept his nest, piling the blankets around the large, round pillow he’d bought specifically for the nest. He dropped Tim’s blanket to the side and then grabbed the comforter from his bed and wrapped himself in it. He crawled in and hid his face in his blankets, waiting anxiously.

Timothy rolled his eyes as he leaned against Jack’s desk, arms crossed. Jack paced, blithering on about some vault or another lead to a vault. Timothy didn’t care. Jack was always going on about vaults. He sighed quietly, letting his mind wander.

To the cute omega he’d been seeing recently. Rhys was intelligent, witty and full of sunshine. He always brightened up Tim’s day and it always gave him domestic ideas. He was sure Rhys wasn’t the type, but they had only just began. Rhys was a sleek, Hyperion with cybernetics, and tattoos. Timothy had assumed he’d thought he was flirting with Handsome Jack when they’d met at the bar, but then Rhys had asked for his name. Rhys, though Hyperion, was different. He was sweet, silly, and had quite the addictive personality. He spent most of his money on socks and ice cream. Though he was slender, Timothy had found a secret he adored. Rhys had a small pudge he was sure was from all the ice cream. Timothy had wanted to kiss all over it the moment he’d found out, but he didn’t want to screw things up with Rhys. This was the first relationship he’d found with a kind, thoughtful person and he didn’t want to lose it.

His ECHO vibrated. It was Rhys. Timothy read it as Handsome Jack paced.

I’m stressed out, I gotta nest and cuddle. Please come over? Could you also pick up some ice cream? I’m all out.

Timothy’s heart skipped and beat faster, his stomach flopping. For Rhys to ask him this early, he must be extremely stressed. He lifted from his seat on the desk and walked passed Handsome Jack.

“Hey! Where do you think you’re going?”

“I’m leaving,” Tim said blandly. “Email me the cliff notes version." He left the office, forgetting everything except Rhys. He needed to stop by the store and get the omega’s ice cream, and then dinner and probably snacks. Rhys had a big sweet tooth, but he might want some salty snacks as well. He wasted no time. He grabbed one of the motorized carts Handsome Jack used and took off. It was just fast enough to make a difference.

He stopped at his favorite store and he made his rounds. He would get the ice cream last. He stopped at the deli and got fried chicken with potato wedges and mac and cheese. He’d seen these in Rhys’ fridge. He found some cookies, grabbing two different kinds. He found a bag of chips and a box of crackers. Then, swinging by the frozen section, he grabbed three of Rhys’ favorite flavors.

Hopping into the cart, he ignored the annoyed text from Jack, demanding he bring back the vehicle. Timothy was always stealing one of them, that’s why Jack had two, so he could bitch while he drove himself around.

Timothy made his way over to Rhys’, sending a text to alert him. The door would be unlocked. He arrived, parking the vehicle next to the door against the wall. He set the alarm on the cart and then tested the door. It was open and he locked it behind him. Rhys was nowhere to be found. He set the groceries on the counter, putting the ice cream away once he scooped two scoops from each into a bowl. Carrying it with him, he called for Rhys, not sure if he could be bold and roam the apartment. He didn’t see the omega anywhere in the front rooms, which left the bathroom or the bedroom. He would try the bedroom first.

Cautiously, he went in, calling for Rhys. He heard a quiet call from the walk in closet. The sight tore him apart. Rhys was curled in his nest, eyes red and puffy from crying. Tim wanted to find whoever had made Rhys like this and kill them. He was Handsome Jack after all, no one would be able to tell him no.

“Rhys?” he said gently. “I brought you ice cream, here eat this while I get more comfortable.

Slowly, Rhys blinked his eyes open, squinting through the dark closet at Timothy, illuminated by the bedroom light. He sat up and took the bowl. He stared at the ice cream for a long time before taking a tiny bite.

Timothy stripped off the layers he was forced to wear being Jack. He stripped all the way down to his underwear. Rhys’ eyes widened as he ate, watching, but staying silent. Timothy was built, thanks to a hard regimen of exercise. He went to Rhys, who moved over to make room for Tim. He caught sight of the blanket he always used and grabbed it, wrapping it around him.

“Get out of the comforter,” he said gently.

Rhys complied wriggling as best he could without setting down his ice cream. Laughing quietly, Tim pulled the comforter from around him and draped it in front of them, building it up to secure the nest. He pulled Rhys into his lap so the omega could rest against his chest.

Rhys let the bowl sit in his lap for a moment as he nuzzled into Tim’s neck, drawing in deep breaths of the alpha’s scent. “The… The blanket got coffee on it… I had to wash it…”

Timothy understood now. “I’m sorry, Rhys. I’ll scent it up good today.”

“Are you sure? I don’t want to be a burden…” He sniffled and it killed Timothy.

Setting the bowl of ice cream to the side, Timothy pulled Rhys in for a kiss. He kissed Rhys for a while, holding the omega, rubbing his shoulders and arms. “You could never be a burden,” Tim said. “I’m really glad you asked me to come over.”

“You weren’t busy, were you?” Rhys asked, reaching for his ice cream.

Timothy grunted. “Not even close.” Timothy held Rhys as he ate. “I brought dinner as well, snacks too, sweet and salty.”

“Mmm,” Rhys sighed, snuggling closer to Tim. he rested his head on the alpha’s shoulder. “That sounds amazing. You’re the best, Tim, thank you.”

“I’ll do anything for you Rhys. I know that’s really forward, but I would."

Rhys sat up, looking at Timothy. Rhys kissed him, ice cream sticking to Tim’s lips. He licked the strawberry off. Rhys was smiling wide. “I feel the same way! You’re the sweetest person I’ve ever met and I didn’t expect to panic so much when I didn’t have your scent around me…”

Timothy laughed, his hand rubbing Rhys’ thigh. “There is a fix to that.”

Rhys giggled and lay back onto Tim. “That sounds wonderful, but right now, can we just cuddle?”

“We can do whatever you need,” Tim smiled, holding Rhys close.

I feel this soul deep (now that I have one)

I’d like to thank @crowsketches for helping to inspire this; if I wasn’t bouncing ideas with you, I probably would have never had the inspiration to write this! From this AU Idea, I bring you angst!

No own Cuphead!

It’s interesting, how the simplest of things can knock down, mess up, and even destroy the best laid plans of monsters and fools alike. An unexpected gust, a misplaced word, a little hope have more power than most would ever expect.

In this story, it was a simple observation that caused all the chaos that would change everything in it.

(And yet, sometimes it all just boils down to luck in the end, giving everyone a chance at least once.)

Letting the last of his parchments in his hands enter the hellish fires before him, one Mugman couldn’t have been more pleased with himself then he was now. They beat The Devil himself after all, that should more than enough be a reason to feel just a little proud here! Almost made the punishing chores Elder Kettle would surely give them for this stunt seem just a little more insignificant in the grand scheme of things.

...They did after all have to get into their grandpa’s potions, which were not cheap, or easy to make at all, especially since Peashooter was usually very expensive, if not one of the most expensive ones... So resupplying the old potioneer’s ingredient stash, as well as assisting in making them would be the least the boys can do for their grandfather after he stuck his livelihood out for them. Still, that did not mean it would be in any shape or form fun; there was a reason the old kettle either ordered out or hired professionals to get the things he needed for his concoctions… At least the brothers could now defend themselves as they did it...

Heh heh, heeh, oh, it was going to royally suck.

Sighing, Mugman decided to look around, to get his mind off his chore filled future as well as curious about his surroundings, having never seen an actual throne room and all, even if it was a demons. Seeing said demon still dazed as all those little explosions twirled around them from their throne, and that Cuphead was still burning his contracts, what with him holding more, the blue mug moved a bit, just to take in the vast hall all around them.

It really was ridiculously lavish, gold, marble and what the mug was sure was silk everywhere, with a high ceiling to fit it all in, maybe also show just how small a person was. The younger brother could see how a demon like the Devil could probably like it, seeing as it this space was probably needed to fit their ego. Chancing another look over at the said being, a familiar item on their side table caught his attention.

Was that? Could it really?... Hesitant, as it would put him in proximity to the demon again, yet curious all the same (especially if he was right), Mugman tiptoed over to the rather large table, for him, the mug managed to sneak a peek at the papers that caught his attention, his eyes widening as he took them in.

‘They are! There are more soul contracts!’ was Mugman’s thoughts, taking in the many papers on the table, all laid out before him, along with a number of binders prime and ready to be used.

‘The Devil must have been confident he would win, already planning how he would sort everything here and now…’ Mugman frowned, even as he narrowed his dark eyes at the tables contents. ‘Well, let’s just show him the error in that arrogance of his!’ and with that, the young man grabbed the contracts on the table, a slight smirk on his face as he took them over to Cuphead.

“Hey bro, look what I found!” Mugman nearly chirped, getting his bro’s attention easily, making him look up, seeing just what he had found.

“Ha, nice one Mugman! Whoa!” Cuphead said, before exclaiming as the one he grabbed let out a lot of dust with the rough grabbing movement. “Looks like some of these are pretty old; probably have to be careful not to get tetanus or something” the older brother frowned, glaring at the offending parchment.

“I rather doubt we’ll get something like that; surely they make sure to properly care for items such as these.” Mugman said, even as he threw a few of the contracts into the fire, making sure they burned.

“The Casino is run by the Devil, and is over a literal hell mouth; I doubt they have the best health regulations around.” Cuphead answered, getting his brother to blink over at him as they finally threw their own contracts into the flame.

“...You know, if you had more sensible moments like these, I might stop being surprised every time you say something that actually makes sense.”

“Ha ha, I’ll have you know I’m sensible all the time.”

“You bet our souls to the devil.”

“I SAID I WAS SORRY!”

“Still never gonna let that go bro; neither will Elder Kettle.”

“...Shit…”

“My thoughts exactly.”

One King Dice, Manager of the Devil’s Casino and right hand man of the being, knew he probably deserved some sort of reward for not drinking even one drop of alcohol the whole day.

And boy, if there was a day to get roaring drunk, it would certainly be today.

“Yes, I would like the schedule the reconstruction of the Devil’s Casino at your most convenient timing. Yes, you will be payed- No, we will not pay upfront- No, you will not be paid that mu- I can easily wait for assistance from the mainland, don’t think we can’t… You will be payed a fifth of the payment upfront, which should be enough for building supplies, and not a damn coin more, do we understand each other… Good, glad you see things my way.” King Dice finished, having to force those words through gritted teeth, his eyes green from frustration and anger. Letting out an even breath, the man allowed himself to sit down on a nearby barstool, a gloved hand going to rub at the tension gathering right above his eyes of his die. Unfortunately, this also allowed darker thoughts to start circling.

‘Would a ‘lacky’ be able to do this? Would a good for nothing be able to pull this dump back together again, piece by piece? That bastard better be glad I owe him for saving my ass, otherwise-’ Gritting his teeth, eyes bright green now, the die winced as the tension in his head spiked, having to close his eyes for a bit in pain as he did.

He… needed a moment. Just… To stop thinking for a bit; a distraction would very much be appreciated right now.

“Everything okay Sir?” was said, thankfully getting the manager’s attention, making him look over to the familiar stack of poker chips that was his co-worker.

“Hmph, it will be eventually Bettigan; the construction company will be here in the week, so the casino should be fixed up as good as new pretty soon… How is Wheezy doing?” Dice asked, the green finally leaving his now dark eyes, showing just how tired they were as they stared at the other man.

“A bit touch and go there for a bit Sir, but your quick thinking saved him in the end; with just a bit of rest, he should be okay.” Chips answered, voice in a soft drawl as they looked at their boss in concern and no little respect.

“Please, all I did was push him into his ash pile where he belonged; I just didn’t want to have to deal with the audits he would no doubt leave behind for me to handle.” Dice huffed, scowling even as he heard Chips chuckle in reply, though making sure to look innocent all the same.

“Sure boss, I’ll be sure to tell him that.” the texan drawled, even as he gave the most fake innocent smile to pair with his look, making King shake his head.

Really, sometimes he wondered about his employees.

“Anyone else damaged?”

“The Tispy Troop, along with Pip and Dot got out the lightest in battle, though they are still kicking themselves over the lost. Hopus’s magic went a bit wild for minute, but that’s been calmed easy with some carrot juice.” Chips started, closing his eyes as he thought of his coworkers, “Phear and Mr. Chimes both got out alright too, though they're still smarting over their damaged equipment; won’t be cheap to replace…” Chips grimaced, Dice doing so as well as the bills just kept on piling up.

Luckily they had insurance, even if that was going to be a bitch to go through later, it would make the hit the casino took at least a little less.

“Mangosteen and Pirouletta, next to Wheezy, are the runners up on this shit list; Mango got sick real bad, damaged a rib, while Letta broke her leg and some burns. They should both be fine in a week though, so there’s that if anything.” Chips explained, face grim even as he delivered the hard news, getting a sigh from Dice.

Thank hell for magic; made everything so much easier when it wasn’t being an utter pain in his ass.

“Good to know… Though you did forget someone in your report Bettigan.” Dice said, narrowing his dark eyes on the stack of poker chips, which blinked up at him in confusion, before understanding lit up their eyes.

“No worries here boss; might have looked bad, but I’m used to pulling myself back together easily. Second nature now.” Chips assured, even as his boss’s eyes started going green.

“Be that as it may, you will have a check up at the infirmary before the day is done, am I clear?”

“I’ll be right behind ya boss.” was the reply he got in turn, make the die roll his eyes.

“I am fine, so need to get your chips out of place over it.”

“That would be easier to believe sir if you didn’t look like you would pass out at any moment.” was the blunt reply the texan gave, getting a glare for his cheek.

Unfortunately, he did have a point; matching black eyes and a missing tooth, combined with his cracked die and rather tattered outfit probably didn’t paint the best picture. Not to mention he honestly felt how he looked, sore and tattered in places he hadn’t known existed; Bettigan was right in his observation, King Dice was not at his best right now, and could probably use an aspirin or two.

Did not mean he wanted it pointed out though.

“Thank you for your opinion, it has been noted; now, if you’re well enough to blather about, you can surely help with the paperwork.” Dice said, motioning to the rather large stack he had going on at one of the few intact tables, one he had been interrupted from with the construction company’s callback.

That managed to elicit a nervous chuckle, “You know what, maybe I should go for just a quick check in, never hurts to have someone else double check you know.” they managed, even as they backed away warily.

“Be sure that you do-” a sharp feeling in his chest cut him off, a gloved hand reaching there, even as he suddenly gagged, feeling as if something was choking him, strangling from his neck to chest.

“Boss!” was all he managed to hear, only for darkness to steal away his senses all together after that.

King Dice frowned, feeling at a lost as he stared into the inky blackness all around him, not even able to see his own hand in front of him, though at least able to feel it, judging by the pressure on his face.

This… was rather disconcerting… The die just opened his mouth, wondering if his hearing was just as impaired as his sight, when an utterly profound, painful, near awful feeling came over him. He couldn’t even scream, the pain so much in his simple flesh and blood, taking over everything thought, every action, every single point of focus in this all encompassing darkness.

And yet, despite the agony he was going through, despite all the pain that brought a wet heat to his eyes, Dice could never remember feeling so complete as he was now. Like fixing a dislocated limb, it was as if one were jamming a missing piece he had been unaware this whole time into his very being. The process ever so painful, and yet so filling it left the proud man in tears.

Oh,but it didn’t just end there; with this completed feeling, images soon came to join with the pain, some going so fast he could barely comprehend the emotions with them.

Others though seemed to slow down, letting the man actually take them in, savor their emotions for just a bit before they too were just as gone from his grasp.

(A smiling woman, so full of love, her hugs just as warm as a mother’s should be, always open for one more.)

Gasping, King grabbed at his head, curling into himself as the barrage continued, the slow/fast pace of it all nearly impossibly for his mind to handle.

Until suddenly, it wasn’t just in his head anymore, the tide seemingly curbed for now as a glow in the darkness shined out, easily getting his attention. Despite the lingering ache his body was in, King forced himself forward, even as each step towards it seemed to rip and tear at his very being when finally, he made it to where the glow originated from.

Before him, what was shining was a mirror, barely being able to call it as such because it looked like just merely a reflective sheet of glass. No, what made it so was when Dice looked into it, it was as if he was staring into an amusement park one, the sight inside giving the man a shock.

Tired, yet glowing yellow-gold eyes stared hard back into pained glowing greens, twin faces similar in looks, though one done in purple while the reflection was red.

For this moment in time, Dice could only just stare at this other version of himself, so many thoughts and feeling welling up in him even as he did, so many questions as well accompanied them. Just as he was about to voice his confusion, the die blinked when his reflection beat him to the punch, their lips moving, yet no sound coming out.

It was more than enough for the master manipulator though, lip reading just one of their many skills.

You need to remember.

“What?” Dice couldn’t help but ask, only to take a hasty step back when he heard a thunderous crack, the mirror before him filling with them, even as the reflection continued to stare on forlornly.

Remember what is important. Was all the the red pip die was able to managed, just as they shattered before his very eyes.

And yet, even as he stared on, those shining shards of mirror falling all around the horrified die, Dice did.

He was remembering.

Two people, a young die and a handsome man, dancing under a fun moon’s glow, candlelight surrounding them even as they moved all around.

“Do you love me?”

“I do.”

“More than anything?”

“Of course!”

“How much?”

“I love you, with all my heart and soul- wha?”

“Haha, I was hoping you would say that.

“I-I don’t, whats?”

“Amazing really, the most damning things said in love.”

A youth running, hurrying, fast as they can, getting away from that monsterdemondevil on their tail.

“Can’t let him, I-I can’t let him get them…”

‘Have protect them’

“My-hack-family.”

‘Can’t let that bastard get to them; not now, not ever.’

“Gotta warn... them.”

‘No matter what.’

The two figures are back together again, except there is no tenderness here with a devil revealed, as the young die at their feet screamed, pain all but consuming them from the magic taking place here tonight.

“You have cost me most powerful souls, welp. For that, I will not forgive… But we will have time to make sure you learn your lesson, won’t we?”

Glowing yellow eyes burned bright up at their tormentor, even as slowly, inching deeper and deeper, a hypnotic green started filling them, much like an infection, the pips gaining a purplish color to them on the die’s head.

“Heh, yeah; you’ll have plenty of time to learn your place.

“...” Dice stared, just taking it all in, gathering as much thought as he could managed together even as he felt himself falling, falling, falling ever so slowly downward, upward, side to side.

His entire life was a lie… His loyalty, his trust, himself… Just a sham, a fake… Not even his memories were spared...

The Devil tricked him out of his soul, messed with his mind, and lied to him his own life...

Stunned as he was, shocked by what he had seen, the die didn’t even realize he was awake until he felt something wet on his face.

Blinking, the casino king brought a gloved hand to his face, trying to find the source of the dripping he was feeling. It took him an embarrassingly good chunk of time to realize he was the source, the wetness on his face tears.

That… That was new. Or at least, King couldn’t remember the last time he actually cried.

-waswhenthedeviltorturedhim- wincing at the pain, King closed his eyes, hissing between clenched teeth.

Oh, he was going to be in for one hell of a time, the die could already tell… Question was, just how was he going to spend the experience? Could he really stay at the casino, with-

NO.

King let out a full body shudder, not even needing to finish the thought; that had been a stupid question honestly.

(Who knew just what he would do to his old boss, if he saw them now?)

Looking around, King felt a bit of relief seeing that he was in the infirmary, as not only could he get some pain medication here before he left, it was conveniently close to the Casino’s back door entrance. Lucky him, it seems.

Getting up, cringing slightly as how even this simple movement brought him pain, the injures from before still there along with the painful ache of getting his soul back, Dice made his way to the medical supplies. Easily finding the aspirin and downing two dry before deciding to pocket the bottle, they paused at the sight of bit of red from the corner of his eye. Blinking, Dice turned slightly, wondering if he was bleeding, only to stop in his tracks as he fully registered what he was seeing.

It was the red pip die he had seen in his ‘dream’, except much older and injured than before, though those tired yellow glowing eyes were still the same. Bringing up a hand, Dice touched the reflection, with it mirroring his action in return.

...So, this is what he looked like with a soul…

(How was he suppose to feel about this? Happy? Angry? He really didn’t know.)

Shaking his head and turning to leave, Dice was only stopped by a pointed cough in the corner of the room. Frown now firmly in place, they turned yet again, only to blink in surprise at the familiar sight of one of his coworkers, Wheezy, in bed.

And boy, did they look like they needed it; a bit burnt out, and smoking slightly on the darker side, the cigar had a few more cuts to his name, with a paleness that would only disappear in time. And yet, even pained, those yellowed-red eyes were still sharp, narrowed in on his boss as they frowned right back, concern and worry easy to see in the lines of his face and brow.

Blinking slightly, Dice wondered at that, not remembering them being particularly close, but then again, while King’s always had a good ability of reading people and using it to his advantage, the reasons behind why and how they could come about were always a mystery to him…

(Then again, those without souls weren’t the best with emotions, understandably.)

And yet, he looked at Wheezy, and could see that the man respected him, cared for maybe, from how long they have worked together and all, so the worry wasn’t misplaced… In fact, it was returned, Dice just as concerned about his co-workers own damage as he was with his own...

Guess having one’s soul back brought out the emotions in people…

(Wasn’t sure he liked that or not.)

“Leaving already King? Not even a goodbye kiss to remember you by?” Wheezy rumbled, eyes unblinking, keeping an even stare with the man standing, playing casual even as their whole body was run through with tension and pain.

“Like you could even handle one in your state; you’d probably keel over before anything could even start.” Dice replied back automatically, grimacing slightly at the rather weak retort. He could usually come up with something more cutting than that, but considering his mind’s state right now, he’ll give himself a pass on it.  

At that, the Cigar gave him an unreadable look, gone so fast the die didn’t even get a chance to try and decipher it. The other let out a breath, dark smoke coming out heavily with it, twirling in the air and leaving the smell of spices and tobacco over the sterile environment, before motioning over to something on his left with an uninjured hand.  

“True enough there, but at least I don’t forget the essentials when I’m leaving a place; lucky you have some helping hands looking out for you.” The Cigar said, which was what prompted Dice to look over, eyebrows rising in surprise.

Right on the table next to what had to have been his bed, the sheets and pillows all in disarray, was his black suitcase, his gloves and cards jumping all about, but then standing to attention when they noticed they had his. But what really got his notice was a simple paper atop his case, already filled out and just needing a signature to finish it.

It was a resignation letter, just one simple page and written beautifully full of backhanded compliments and dry subtext.

Dice choked, hand going to his mouth even as he could feel those damn tears start up again. Closing his eyes, taking a deep breath, the former casino manager grabbed the pen on the table, writing his name down, surer in this then he was in anything else right now.

He knew it was best for him to leave; if nothing else, his mental health would need the time away… and yet, he still felt pained, the thought of leaving this hell.

(Amazing, the places one can grow fond of even as you hate them.)

“Dice.” was called, making the desired man look up, eyebrows raising as he saw Wheezy holding a paper of his own. “Make sure to keep in contact; if you get found in a ditch, who knows how that will impact the casino’s good name.”

“...Probably might just improve it, really.” Dice said dryly, a weak smile on his face, even as he went for the paper in the cigar’s hands, getting a laugh at his words.

Looks like he wasn’t as alone in this little misadventure; somehow, that made things look a little brighter at least..

Far away from the magic and chaos of Inkwell and a certain casino, a woman that could only be described as a goddess done up in reds, yellows, and black blinked, her wine colored eyes going to her glowing pendant on his chest. The shining sun that glowed in the garden she was in did not do anything to hide said glow, as the pendant shown red in the woman’s hands.

“My Lady Luck, is everything well?” a servant asked, even as they delivered a most lovely tea to the classy lady, only the best for such an elegant being.

“Oh, nothing to worry yourself; just a mother’s worry.” Lady Luck answered absentmindedly, the red jeweled die in her hands still giving off a light most ominous.

Whatever this would bode for in the future, the mother could only hope her child would make it through alright.

Journal #2: End of the Week Blues and Habit Implementations

If you read the title correctly, yes, that will be the focus of this journal.

So, let’s start with the bad news because it is important to highlight the problems and then go about fixing them.

My Blues:

I really only exercised once this week.

I still ate snacks at wrong times of the day as well as eating the wrong kinds and portions. 

Eating the foods I shouldn’t be eating unless I deserve it.

I made excuses not to do things I needed to do.

I very much so dislike that these happened. However, I did do a few things to sort of change my habits for the better:

I added more fruit to my diet. multiple small fruits or one bigger fruit.

Instead of eating a full course lunch meal at school, I’m trying to only eat 3 small fruits or an apple. Then when I get home, I try to usually eat what is there. If made a certain way (fried or something), I try to eat less of that but still try to eat enough to satiate myself.

I went running again but only one day. I ran at least a mile. I used to be able to do 7 miles but an injury caused me to halt until I was able to run. When I ran it began to hurt on the toe where it happened. So I had to walk a lot of the way back. I like to call it the “successful fail-but-not-fail”

I was on my feet a lot when working on projects or standing during the critiques of people during the week.

I wish it was easy to have more time to do all this again. Another thing I have to deal with is stress (from school, home, homework, existential crisis), which leads me to eating all those things I’m trying to eat less of. But then it gets uncontrollable. All I can do is to jump back in though. Because if I don’t, it’ll just get worse from here on out.

So I decided to add/change some (more) habits to my schedule in hopes of helping, even though it will be a slow adjustment to get into. These things are:

Running on the treadmill at home as the weather gets colder and nastier. I might do Couch to 5k (C2-5k) app. 

Get back into the 8fit app. This was a nice app to follow. I got lazy much to my dismay and didn’t follow it when I should.

Go to bed earlier. Lately my eyes began to droop by 11PM. Which is actually really good. I want to aim for something earlier like at 10PM. So my sleep-start window, I wanna say and attempt, will be around 10:30PM-11PM.

Dancing. I like dancing guys. The types of dancing I like are zumba but also a lot of Vocaloid dances. And a lot of my focus for dancing may be more of the latter. I used to dance to these at least 7 or so years ago. And since I have a console that can play videos that I transfer from USB, following it on my tv screen will be easier than squinting at a small screen for hours lol. Thinking about it just brings up old memories too.

Cutting down on frequency of my fave snacks. This is important as I tend to gravitate towards buying these guys. Good thing though is that now I’ve really only managed to buy chips when my sister asks me to buy them. My sweet tooth still needs adjustment but I’ve really only limited it to what I have in the house. Once the snacks are gone, they’re gone until a family member buys them or I buy a small thing during my lunch break. I’m not as big a sugar candy fan, but I do love chocolate and fine candies. However, one bar of almond joy would be enough for me in the candy department. Ice cream is an entirely different story. I’ve already cut down on soda so I would probably limit myself to probably one soda a week.

Cutting down how much I buy food. Specifically that of fast food. I have Jimmy Johns by my school building. It’s easy to get it for lunch. So I made it a small habit to try to go to Target about a 5-7 minute walk away to get fruit and usually an adult lunchables. I’ll probably save a ton if I just bring fruits from home.

Cutting down the frequency of buying restaurant food/fast food. This is one of the most important ones on my list because of how often it happens inside my house. I live with my parents and sister. My mom and sister weigh much less than I do (my sister used to have a weight problem but she shed, like, 20 pounds in the last 1-2 years). My sister being 3 years older than me and not wanting to eat anything mom makes anymore (to be fair, me too since her cooking has is lacking much more than it has before), buys Thai food and other things almost every other week. While I could shrug it off and be like “nope no thai for me,” there are literally days where nothing was made and I come home exhausted and not wanting to make anything due to lack of time and the amount of time it takes to make something quickly for me to eat. So I want to try to limit my fast food/restaurant food intake to once a month (unless I am invited to go hang out with friends. In that case I have to make wiser decisions).

Try to exercise at least 3 days a week. Yep. I wanna do that. However, I don’t want to isolate it to 3 consecutive days. I might want to try to go for every other day, such as Mon-Wed-Fri one week and then Tues-Thurs-Sat the next. I think I would like to keep my Sundays free because I work from 8AM-4PM, despite the fact it’s the day I probably need most exercise because I sit around 65% of the time. But it is a day I want to use to relax.

I like to sit back and ask myself how in the heck I managed to do this when I was younger. But then I remember almost immediately that my current conditions differ that of when I was 14/15 years old: I’m older, I have more free reign in how I manage money as well as my sister, which is a detriment sometimes, and my parents are getting older and food preparation should be done by me more so. I had more time in the day to do the workout stuff. I don’t want to add “making food” completely in my agenda for reason it will fail if I immediately implement it. 

I still don’t know how to incorporate full-on food making without getting too busy with school. I try to limit it to breakfast, but so far my breakfast is either cereal (cornflakes), toast with a spread (PB or Jam/Jelly), or easy-yolk egg on toast with 5 piece of very thinly sliced bacon-looking beef. It’s not bad, but it’s not good either. I don’t eat any form of pork, so it’s one less thing to worry about in my diet.

With that, this is my update. I haven’t made any much progress with weight, but trying to get into the habits to better myself will help in that journey. 

***ALSO I AM STILL IN NEED OF ASSISTANCE IN REALLY REALLY GETTING STARTED IN THE STEPS TO LOSE WEIGHT ASIDE FROM CHANGING HABITS. What should I do? Go to Human Performance Lab at school and see all my calculations? Go to the human performance lab for the nutrition guide help I need? Chapter 8: Maybe This is How it Was Meant to Be

This is! The end of Solitary! There are three books left, but first we have the next In-Between Collection. There are four scenes in this collection, so we’ll be back with Death Sentence on October 19th.

If Sawyer ever brings up the idea of coming back to Furnace when we’re done here, I’m going to kill them. My head’s still messed up from the wisps of fear and anger I’m getting from them. The crimson light of the infirmary doesn’t help, though we don’t linger long.

Beyond, surgery amphitheatres dot the walls. I don’t look to find out which ones contain wheezers, which ones have children being cut into. I just need to get to the end of this hall.

The others joke ahead of me. They can taste the possibility of freedom.

I don’t even know what I would do if we managed to get to the surface now. Would the rest of the game continue? Would we have to face the might of Furnace and his creations without the help of nectar?

I’m more scared to find out than I am of Cross and the new nectar.

But I follow behind them and keep my mouth shut. There’s no point in telling them that they’re wrong. That hope is what we need to get out of here.

At a three-way junction, we continue straight ahead. An iron door waits at the end, heavy and unyielding. We normally sneak in and try to climb the chimney. It’s the perfect size for us to climb, aside from being about a mile straight up.

The roar on the other side of the door tells me we’re not going to be able to do that this time. See, no point in killing their hope. That sound did it for me.

The furnace is on. I hate that I’m relieved, but all I can think is that I’m happy not to climb up there. Ecstatic not to have to end up burned alive to move forward.

“I ain’t going back there,” Kevin insists when I stop behind the rest. “I’d rather die.”

“Better do it quick, then,” I say. “There’s nowhere else for us to go.”

Kevin glares at me. He lunges through the group to shove me back, but it’s all for show. His only options are the infirmary or death.

“This is your fault.” He levels a finger at my chest. “We wouldn’t be here if it weren’t for you.”

“You agreed to come,” I growl. “I didn’t make anyone do anything!”

For once, that’s true. I made a point to have Sawyer disable my powers of manipulation in this universe, but that wasn’t the case when I was gathering everyone. If they had refused to come, I would have backed off.

I didn’t make anyone do anything.

“We weren’t expecting this.” Alex tugs on the door to the furnace, though I’m not sure what he would do if it actually opened. “It’s worse than last time.”

“No one expected this. If I had known—” I look back down the hall at a shout. Cross is coming. I continue in a rushed hiss. “If I’d known it would turn out like this, I never would have asked.”

“Fat lotta good that does us now.” Donovan drags Kevin back by the back of his uniform. “Unless you got a better plan than the usual one, keep your mouth shut.”

“But that blue stuff—”

“We’ll be fine,” I promise. I think of how many times I’ve heard Sawyer say something similar, how many times it turned out to be a lie for them. “There’s nothing else we can do, unless you’re down for a suicide pact.”

“That truly would be something.”

I spin around to see Cross standing at the end of the hall with an entourage of blacksuits behind him. Several look less than happy, but the bulk of them grin those half moons that I’m starting to fear again.

“Cross,” Zee gasps, so quiet I barely hear it.

Cross, however, beams cruelly.

“Quite. You know what comes next.” He raises a hand and the blacksuits come forward in a rush. “The time to run is over.”

I expect a vice grip on my arm, but the suits part around me like water. They grab hold of my friends, who all fight tooth and nail. I still have to watch the five of them get dragged back past Cross.

To the infirmary.

He strolls closer with his hands in his pockets.

I wish I could say I’m not terrified. My brain can’t decide between flight and freeze, so I manage a half-step back. All it earns is a broader grin.

“You certainly have my prized specimen in a mood,” he notes. His voice is too light, it trips every alarm I have. “It’s hard to believe you used to be so close.”

Sawyer.

I keep my jaw clenched shut. I can’t give him a reason to kill me. Virtuoso warned me of that.

“Without her leading your merry band, I suppose that makes you the competition this round.”

He stops barely a yard away. His smile reeks of malice. It takes me a few beats to decide he wants a response.

“It doesn’t change anything,” I choke out. “You won’t keep them forever.”

If possible, the corners of his smile broaden further.

“I don’t expect to. She seems to have plenty of pent up aggression toward you, however.” He taps his chin, making a show of thoughtfulness. “I doubt she would need much prompting to take your life if the opportunity arose.”

His words drench me like ice water. My muscles lock and it takes every ounce of concentration I have to keep my breathing level.

Sawyer hates losing people, no matter how they make it look from the outside.

Would they be able to recover if they found out they had killed one of us while under Cross’s thumb? That they had killed me? Even if I know it’s not their fault, if I forgive them, what would it do to them?

“I’m sure you know what you have to do to avoid that regrettable outcome.”

Regrettable outcome.

He jerks his head and turns back down the hall. I only hesitate as long as it takes to realize he’s inviting me to follow before I do. It’s clever, using them against me.

He found my weak point.

So, I trail behind him without a word. There’s no point in fighting. I need the nectar to stand a chance against him or any of Furnace’s creatures. I know that.

He knows that.

He still leads me at a leisurely pace along the hall back to the infirmary. He’s leading me directly to what I want. He hasn’t changed the way he reacts to our plans, he’s letting us through without any resistance.

But he doesn’t know about the pieces of us I sealed in our consciousnesses. He doesn’t know—I hope—about Virtuoso and their warnings. He can’t know.

We can do this. I can do this. I have to swallow everything else down and know that we will get out of this prison.

With that in mind, I push past the plastic slats into the red light of the infirmary. I follow Cross through a curtain to an empty cot. At his indication, I climb onto the bed with a bad taste in my mouth.

Cross moves to leave, but pauses with a hand on the stained fabric.

“Remember: Obedience is the difference between life and death in my prison.”

He whisks out without another word, without waiting for a response. A wheezer takes his place in an instant, and I lie back and stare at the ceiling. I don’t want to see this.

The sharp sting of a needle in my arm leads to my vision falling away. I think I’m still conscious, somewhere, but I don’t know where that is. I beat down the instinct to fight back.

I have to do what Cross says, for now.

He’ll get what’s coming to him soon enough.

“At least he didn’t get himself killed.”

I glare up at the glowing splinter. It shrugs and drops down to stand next to me. It rests a hand on my shoulder. I don’t turn away from my screens, all paused on various people and locations.

“There’s nothing I can do for him now,” I say eventually. “Chip away at Sawyer, maybe, but I can’t interfere with nectar.”

It pats my shoulder with a soft sound in its throat.

“Just keep up what you’re doing. Put your calculations to use, plan for different possibilities.”

I shrug it off and void the screens. I may as well let the universe run on its own. No matter what I’ve tried, I can’t affect how the nectar changes its hosts. Not to mention, if I keep pushing at Sawyer with my recycled phrases they might shove me out.

I can’t afford to start over at this point.

“My offer to help is still on the table.”

I jerk around to find the splinter still standing there. It normally flits off when I turn it away. Now, though, its brows crease in an uncharacteristically serious frown.

“I can do this,” I mutter.

“I know.” It dips its head in a nod. It takes me aback. It’s never agreed with that before. “But I could make it easier. Set all the limits you want, make rules for me, whatever.”

It shrugs and finally tucks its legs up to its chest to float. It doesn’t leave, though it looks away.

“I’m scared for them, too,” it says.

I’m saved from needing to answer by the door to the outside appearing so close it almost knocks me over. The splinter shakes its head and drifts off to the edge of our living area.

“Hey, kid, how goes running the world?”

I turn to the door and frown. Kane has come to speak to me several times now, keeping me aware of the world outside. It gives me some idea of how urgent getting out is. So far, we aren’t high on the priority list.

“Nothing is going right, but that’s nothing new.” I sigh. “Do you have news, then?”

“Jess wants to talk to you.”

I grimace. The real one is the last person I should be talking to.

“No.”

He makes a nonconcommital sound and the thud of a body slumping against the door follows. I lean my head against the door. This is the closest I’ve ever been to the actual Cube.

“I figured I would ask.” The distinct sound of shuffling paper drifts through the door. “As for news: Jess is on with the Scouts again. I’m keeping an eye out, but she could use something to stabilize her.”

“They’ll kill you eventually if you keep using the wrong pronouns, you know.”

He barks a laugh.

“Well, you know,” he says with a smile in his voice. “If they ever actually ask me, I’ll be more than happy to comply.”

I shake my head but leave it alone. They’ll tear his head off anyway if he’s not careful.

“I’m trying to find a way to let Connor project himself through the door, since it doesn’t look like they have any intention of finishing this daydream soon,” I say.

“With how things are looking around here, that might not actually be the best idea.”

I pause. I didn’t think Connor’s presence could be considered a bad thing as far as Jess is concerned. I consider asking why, but he would say if he had any intention of telling me.

“Is there more?”

He doesn’t answer right away.

“Hey, is everyone else doing okay?”

I jump and turn to find the splinter hovering just behind me. Kane makes a surprised sound.

“Hello to you, too. I don’t follow gossip much—”

“That’s bullshit and we both know it.”

I stare at the splinter, the testiness in its voice unfamiliar. It smiles, though, an excited expression trying to be a smirk.

He sighs.

“I dunno what you want me to say, kid.” He sounds more genuine now. It’s like talking to two different people. “It’d take days to list out all the drama around here.”

The splinter presses closer and rests a hand against the door. The wood warps, and for a second I think it might break out. It doesn’t make any real change on the door, though, and it eventually pats the surface.

“I’ll just have to pick your brain when I get back, then.”

I look at the splinter, and its smile has turned into a bitter scowl. It doesn’t match its light tone. I wonder if Kane looks the same when his equally cheery response comes on the other side.

“Sure thing, kid.”

The door disappears. The splinter keeps its hand up, eyes closed, for several seconds before letting it drop to its side.

I’ve never been to the Cube. I don’t have friends or relationships to have left. I know about everyone in an abstract sense. The knowledge is there, but I don’t know them. Kane’s the only person out there I’ve even talked to.

But this splinter was a part of a version of Jess that remembers being out there. Sure, it’s technically a piece of them that has never set foot in the Cube either, but it remembers being there. It remembers everyone, it remembers being surrounded by people.

It has a home to go to.

After a few minutes, it swings its head around. Its signature, tired smile is nowhere to be found. It watches me warily.

I haven’t been treating this splinter of Sawyer very well at all.

“Fine.”

It perks up and tilts its head.

“‘Fine,’ what?”

I shrug and turn away. My screens pop back up without prompting.

“When Cross finding out about us poses no danger—after Connor’s final test, maybe—you can help.” It gasps, but I plow on. “There will be rules, but the two of us together will get this done much faster, right?”

Arms wrap around my middle. I manage to hold in the gasp that wants to startle past my lips. The splinter presses its head against the back of my shoulder and squeezes tight.

I pat its arms awkwardly, unsure of how to respond. It withdraws within seconds, and I don’t have to look to know it’s vanished into the ether.

I try to focus on the universe we’re supposed to take care of. I have to figure out how to outline the rules to keep the splinter from overstepping our bounds. With how creative Sawyer—Jess, whichever name is more fitting—can get in dodging rules of a universe, I have to be extremely careful.

With how long it’s been since Jess moved the universe forward, I have a feeling I’ll have a long time to think.

Week 6: Two-Thirds Through!

Hello Family and Friends!

Unfortunately I only have an hour to email today, and the reason why is pretty crazy!! It's a pretty long story but I'll summarize it best I can:

So we exercise most everyday, and typically we're encourage to keep on our garments while we exercise (basically a set of white underclothes that help us remember the covenants we've made with God and focus on living righteously). I've worn my garments every single day since being a missionary, but I was on my last pair yesterday and I didn't want to wear sweaty underwear for the rest of the day, so I didn't wear them. Now there's kind of a running joke in our residence from the old mongols, because one of the Elders tore his ACL the day he didn't wear his garments, but it seemed like just a joke right? Well the one day i didn't wear my garments, I eat a soccer ball to the face and chip my bottom tooth. Now, I have a little bit of soccer experience under my belt, playing since i was a toddler through high school, so I typically don't do stupid things. Well for some reason, yesterday I went to chest the ball that was coming in my direction with some pace on it; but for some reason I just went complete deer in the headlights, and instead of chesting the ball, I let it smack into my face and crack my bottom tooth. It was probably the most majestic and idiotic thing I've ever done all at the some time. Just picture this: One guy kicks the ball hard in the air, another guy just straight jumps in the air with this determination to settle it with his chest and score...but instead he just kinda goes limp in mid-air and lets the ball crush his face. Yeah I was that second guy.

Needless to say, that morning was probably THE most frustrated and moody I've ever been in a long time. I hate being in a bad mood, it just feels so bad, and I really struggle to just snap out of it and just let things go. It feels like the adversary extra hates me, and whenever something happens that gives me negative emotions, he just seizes the weakness within me and exacerbates my condition. Crazy thing is though, by the end of the day, I taught two lessons and ending up laughing so much in the residence that night. It was such a bipolar day, and it seems like those kind of things happen every single day!!! Something happens that gets me a little down, then I feel the spirit later in the day and end up going to bed happy. I think it's also worth mentioning that it's hard to call my tooth getting chipped as mere coincidence. They say there are no such things are coincidences in the gospel, and it seems so true to me. Yesterday, there was on opportunity for God to break my down the one day where I didn't have my garments on my entire MTC stay, and then later that day I was able to soften my heart and recognize His hand in my life. Further more, the volunteer dentist here at the MTC only comes every Thursday, which happened to be a single day after chipping my tooth AND my Preparation Day! And now I leave for an appointment with a dentist in about an hour and a half to go get it fixed up. It's as though God planned out every single step of this experience I would have for my benefit, that I would be brought to a really low point, humbled, and then have everything work out perfectly to be fixed the very next day having learned the lesson he needed me to learn. It kind of felt like a really personal experience I had, where it seemed it though God was focusing solely on me. I think that several lessons can only be learned by going through hardships, and yesterday was a great demonstration for me to recognize that God is aware of me and wants to refine me so that I can reach my full potential as an individual. I'm not going to have an angel sent to me, that just isn't how God works with me, but it doesn't mean I don't recognize the things he does to show that he is mindful of me. Sounds kind of silly, but I thought it was a really cool experience and I learned a lot from it.

I believe that when we put our faith in God and strive to live worthy of representing Him, the blessings are poured out into our lives for us to discover. It's been the greatest gift to be a missionary, to be able to receive these blessings and witnesses at a much greater accelerated pace. It really helps in my personal conversion, and for my desire to live righteous throughout all of my life, and not just during these 2 years, but to represent the name of Christ in every point in time so long as I am worthy to do so. I'm really happy that I chose to follow God's plan and live with sorrow, that I may know joy. It's made me appreciate this mission to a much greater degree, and while it feels awful to be upset and under the influence of the adversary, it feels that much more glorious to feel the Holy Spirit and love of God. Serving the Lord is truly the best thing thing here on the earth, though certainly not the easiest. However in almost every case, there isn't a hard thing that wasn't worth doing/enduring. The joy that lies on the other side is so much sweeter. It's like having finished running several miles in 100 degree heat while the sun in beating down on you, and going inside your cool air-conditioned house and drinking a glass of ice water. The most delicious thing in that moment, because of all the struggle you went through beforehand; but without the struggle, the ice water becomes less appreciated and loses its value. I suppose what I have learned is that I am grateful for every struggle that has happened to me, because it's all part of a refining process. It's our entire purpose here for being on earth!!! By growing, learning, developing, improving, preparing/ kasvaen, oppein, kehittäen, parataen, valmistaen (not sure which of the 5 verb infinitives is correct, so let's role with these), we receive joy in this life, and in the life that follows.

I have to go get my teeth fixed now, but I hope all of you have a wonderful week! 2/3rds of the way done with the MTC, and I am soooo pumped for Finland!!! Definitely okay with learning more before I leave though, but we're just getting started as Vanhin Koch!!! Hi Have a question. My rear bumper was lightly tapped by 17 year old new driver. Damage is minor and cosmetic at $425. My car is only three years old and in perfect condition. The insured provided me all his insurance information and said to file a claim through his dad's insurance carrier. I called local police department 911 line to report minor collision. Officer responded and insured admitted to police officer that he tapped rear bumper. Police officer looked at my rear bumper and refused to make a police report as he said cannot issue a report unless damage is over $1500. I begged the officer repeatedly to please provide me even an incident report or something official like an affidavit as the teenager admitted to officer that he hit my rear bumper. Police Officer simply drove off and left me on the side of the road with a stranger. Of course now four weeks later, the insured and his father have simply ignored phone calls, emails and registered mail attempts by his insurance carrier to verify version. (not sure what version would be needed as my black paint is on his front bumper) I called the insured and his dad hung up on me twice. The insurance carrier told me they are denying and closing out the claim due to insured not responding. They said this is totally legal under Illinois State laws. Ok here's the deal, im 18 yrs old and i currently financed a vehicle with the assistance of my mom. I agreed to pay for the car and most of the insurance. I financed the car with the plan of paying only general liability car insurance. After signing the car from the used car dealer, it came to my knowledge that i will have to get FULL coverage auto insurance. The reason behind this is because i need to protect the auto loan that i got to finance the vechicle.
