Why are college websites sooo stingy with their details, I just want to know what the course actually entails, like what are the concepts they're actually teaching, and they're like oh we're too cool and aloof and mysterious, we can't let you know that, teehee, now sign up for my email list that just redirects you to the home page, boy.
#this is why i never went to college forever and still might not#because their websites are clearly designed by someone who hasn't gone#also good luck getting a cost estimate 😭#i hate it here#ignore me#i thought for a second i might be able to consider looking into schooling for once but i'm convinced college websites are a form of#infernal punishment meant only to cause grief and make the process scary as possible#and also i have no confidence in my skills anymore due to idk adhd and anxiety! so it's all much much too much to consider facing

I think one thing I'm gonna say to the people who are, in a way conflicted and/or waiting to watch the series is that you're honestly gonna have to be okay with grey areas. That's literally it.
KnH isn't going to explicitly show nor tell you how good/bad things are. it's an incredibly realistic story set in ancient China tackling its many issues; starting from societal problems, political, norms, gender roles, and so on. What might be problematic now isn't necessarily something the characters are going to think about more than twice.
I think a slightly controversial example would have to be abt the pedo emperor. YES, an incredibly horrible person and deserves to die in the most painful way possible. But KnH also tackled the issue that he had been human, all too pathetic and pitiful to rightfully rule the empire-never had the spine to talk to proper women thus resulting in him only talking and being attracted to (gag) little girls. You're not gonna see the characters talk ill of him more than necessary, they know its fucked up and frankly weird, but there's nothing to be done but to live with the consequences of his actions.
(Why I set this as a grey example is because I've seen people expecting the pedo to be this horrid-abusive person-and he is of course- but they certainly weren't expecting him to be depicted so pitifully and hurt, like he himself was a literal child still in need of protecting.)
don't also expect the characters to do one good thing after another just because you expect them to. Under different situations, different feelings, different place, their choices vary from one another depending on what's necessary. Don't even expect their relationship to be one linear from start to finish, thinking you can guess which way its gonna go.
in fact this is what maomao says when Jinshi questions her explicitly about their relationship

and i just think this genuinely applies to the series as a whole. Natsu Hyuuga isn't going to outrightly spell it out for y'all what Maomao nor Jinshi feels for each other, what the empress dowager feels for the pedo, what Ah-duo feels for the emperor and vice versa. She expects people to understand and come to their own conclusion.
She pieces together puzzles and expects you to fit them together, if you somehow got a different result from the way she intended then, well, that's on you I guess.
don't expect a "yes" or "no" answer to whatever questions you're about to ask. There's always gonna be a "but" and "however" to it, I think. At least from my experience of reading the novel and questioning the choices they've made.
People in this fandom throw away the word SA so easily, TOO easily I'd say. from here on out you're gonna read a lot more "problematic" things that other characters have done that they think are more or less for the good-whether that be their own good or other characters' sake.
The anime honestly does paint the series in a lighthearted way, and compared to other series it's certainly not as "dark". However I do think the strength of this series lay in its realistic choices and stories, how the characters feel so utterly human, not just driven by plot.
#the apothecary diaries#am i even making any sense? idk im blabbering#but a lot of the hate ive seen is mostly abt how jinmao doesnt make sense. how jinshi abuses his power#how the plot dont seem to be moving forward???#like idk i feel like that might just be a you problem cause theres certainly reasons why the LN is so popular there#regarding jinmao. guys. not even they themselves know what's going on anymore#why'd you think you'd be able to figure it out in a span of 12 episodes#im not gonna convince and beg people to give the series a chance. if you wanna stop watching even better#cause i can finally stop reading critiques <I say this knowing full well i brought it on myself lol#but i at least want people to understand why the series is so popular and why people enjoy reading it

u know what though... i don't think this facepalming is for the witnesses in the room, but i also don't think it's an "oh no, thor's so stupid" facepalm, i think it's a "why the fuck did i do that?" one. i don't think loki especially wants to invade jotunheim, he just thought it'd be a laugh to get thor to do it, but then oh shit thor is actually going to do that so now he needs to sabotage it somehow (telling the guard) but also:
"shit, i've fucked this up, haven't i?" it seemed like such a good idea two minutes ago. couldn't help himself. wouldn't it be funny if? but now they have to go to fucking jotunheim and he could so easily have just not done that. oops! facepalm time!
#thor (2011)#whoever called this movie the story of an accidental coup is right.#but it's not that loki's entirely innocent it's just that he hasn't planned ahead. each initial fucked up thing was unconnected#and he just took advantage in the moment to do what he thought would stir the most shit.#let frost giants in because that would be a laugh. now you can get thor to make a stupid decision! do that too!#now dad's in a coma and you can just tell bro he can't ever come home because he killed dad and mum hates him! LOL!#now you're regent and you could be normal about it... OR you could deliberately provoke people you don't like#which makes them stage a counter-accidental-coup oops!#each step is unplanned and *could not* have been planned ahead of time he's just fucking with people repeatedly for shits and giggles#because loki appears to assume odin will wake up and there's no way thor will be stuck on earth forever once that happens#so it can't be something he thinks is going to stick. he's not *actually* able to exile thor forever on his own authority.#but IN THE MOMENT it was funny to fuck with him :)#and to just straight up fucking lie to him :)#and to pretend he's lost the throne to you :)#because loki does not consider the consequences of his actions even though on the evidence of this film it doesn't work out well for him.#therefore this is the facepalm of 'why did i do this to myself?'#fandom thinks loki's a good king due to Being Smart which a) nice obvious classism you have there but also b) he's also dumb as rocks.#he is capable of smart but he can and will fuck things up anyway because he is less capable of being sensible.#so while thor is indeed impulsive i think loki was equally impulsive in his own desire to use thor's impulsiveness against him.#because it'd be funny! right up until the moment it turns out thor really is going to do the thing you just convinced him to do D:#oops lol what am i like!#there'd be an instagram selfie oh him doing a thumbs up gesture captioned 'just told thor he can't come home LOL!'#'me on the throne ha ha bet none of you saw that coming! ps dad is in a coma pls send your thoughts and prayers 🙏 mum is sad :('#'turn your tv on guys i'm invading migard lmao'#'that's me on the news!!!! thor's here too wasn't expecting that might stab him when we meet up lol i love him he's my fave avenger💚'#anyway that's why loki is my problematic fave in this movie

i hate the idea that annie is a weak person just because of her trauma and mental health issues. i would love to see everyone stop completely infantilizing her just based on her reaction to trauma.
yes, she is vulnerable and clearly deeply impacted by everything but that doesn’t mean she was always just a weak little girl. she still could have volunteered. she still could have chosen to go to the games.
yes, losing her most significant support system after everything was another layer of deep trauma. that doesn’t mean she couldn’t have still found joy in her life afterwards.
people can have significant mental health issues and still be capable people. people can have significant mental health issues and still have lives worth living.
adults with significant mental health issues are still adults and shouldn’t be reduced to their trauma and pain.
#annie cresta#the hunger games#look this might not make a lot of sense but it’s something i’m passionate about#probably because i work with smi clients and i’m SICK of people acting like they’re nothing but weak pathetic people who can’t do anything#but i’m a firm believer in the fact that annie was able to live a decent life after the war with her son#no one will convince me otherwise#basically can we all stop treating annie like a child

My favourite thing to do: talk about Endeavor
My least favourite thing to do: explain why I like Endeavor
#like you wouldn't bat an eye if I told you I like literally anyone else#but suddenly it's a problem and you “just don't understand” because it's the pathetic middle aged man#I can't just say “cause he's hot” that gives you the wrong impression#but if you're asking why nothing I say is going to convince you otherwise#you don't actually care you're just trying to gauge if I'm a normal person#because for some reason liking a murderer is fine#but a guy experiencing genuine change after doing some bad shit is inexcusable#excuse me for loving a good character arc#he's so well written but people overlook him because of personal bias#I can't make you like him but you should at least be able to understand why someone might#we were reading the same story#enji todoroki#mha endeavour

Was thinking earlier about “People are not stupid, Ives.” “Really?” and how Ives’ self-centered misanthropy is so important within the larger thematic context of American Imperialism. Imperialists prioritize their own interests over all others since they believe that those they have deemed “others” are unworthy of human consideration. On an individual level, this comes down to believing that you are better than other people, more worthy of life and happiness.
This is how Hart ends up working with Ives as a willing coconspirator… Even before Colqhoun’s arrival, Hart clearly looks down on the other residents of Fort Spencer. He describes them so uncharitably to Boyd that it isolates Boyd from everyone before he’s even met them. Hart hates his job and the life he lived that got him there and he copes by believing that he is, at least, a superior type of person to everyone under his command.
In that way, Hart killing his former comrades in cold blood doesn’t come out of nowhere. It’s the logical conclusion of his superior, misanthropic perspective pushed to the extreme. He’s better than them, so why SHOULDN’T he kill and eat them? Don’t you understand? You have to KILL! to live! You have to KILL!!!!!!!
#ravenous 1999#of course - he ultimately broke down because he wasn’t as far gone down that path as Ives#but i find him to be a more realistic example of the way someone with an attitude of superiority would react in that situation#they might not be able to go through with it long-term but how hard would it be to convince them to start initially?#especially if they could justify that their hand was forced (like Hart with his near death experience)#and he may never have stopped if not for Boyd’s intervention#with Boyd being someone who certainly got frustrated with people and was aware of their flaws#but never viewed himself as an inherently superior person#bc the residents of Fort Spencer are certainly flawed people#but they all display significant positive traits as well#but you don’t hear Hart mention any of those when he introduces them to Boyd (and us the audience)…#their humanity reveals itself to us as the film goes on#and they really did that… they really gave each character a little something extra beyond the 2-D archetype they were based on#and that’s why Ravenous 1999 is everything to me#thank you for coming to my TED talk

Hello I wanted to say thank you for your kenneth branagh hamlet posting it’s been so validating for someone who never liked that movie very much
my gripe with kenny b doing hamlet is it always struck me as a fairly self centered piece of cinema. specifically ken b is so focused on the fact that he’s Playing Hamlet that he barely pays any attention to caring about the other people in the room, which is just antithetical to some of the most fundamental rules of acting. because I believe hamlet (the guy but also the play ig) just doesn’t WORK if hamlet isn’t deeply invested in what happens to claudius/gertrude/laertes/ophelia/horatio/the ghost. and this is how we ended up with the final sequence of the movie being the norwegians putting up a massive Kenneth Branagh As Hamlet statue while hamlet and horatio have their final conversation standing ten literal feet apart.
Anyway all this to say I’m so glad you also thought that something was fundamentally wrong about that movie. when I was in high school my english teacher taught us the play from that movie and I was in such distress
OH also i THINK??? just based off the costumes of the background actors that this is meant to take place somewhere in the 1870s-1880s. bustle period 👍
PRECISELY!!! PRECISELY!!! the way i've been describing it (to people who didn't ask but i'm pissed off) is that branagh seems to care way more about hamlet as a cultural concept (the idea of hamlet as a famous work of art, the intellectual capital hamlet carries, the prestige of hamlet as a demanding role) than he does about the play itself. because pretty much every directorial choice in that movie is, like, the first and easiest choice you'd think of. and the easiest reading isn't always a bad thing, but the fact that NOTHING new is being put forth here goes really badly with the way branagh plays hamlet the character, which is that he seems to be using the role as a vessel for him to flex his Shakespearean Acting Voice and to look very dignified and brooding on screen than... to communicate any of the characters of hamlet. just like you're saying, none of the side characters have any real depth--i mean, for fuck's sake, it doesn't even seem like any of them are FRIENDS? that was the driest polonius-and-laertes-lecture-scene i've ever seen. kate winslet is doing her damndest and derek jacobi has never missed ever but they're not really given much to work with innit
and this is also why i think kenneth's performance in itself fucking blows even if he is a fairly decent actor on a craft level. because he doesn't care about the CHARACTER of hamlet. i simply do not think you can play a good hamlet without looking undignified and out-of-control. like, even his antic disposition is very. i don't want to say "sheldon-cooper-esque" because that sounds like fucking nonsense, but the framing is such that i think the viewer is meant to laugh WITH his hamlet and see his hamlet as running mental circles around everybody else. and, again, that's not ALWAYS a bad thing, but the fact that we never really see him wrongfooted or humiliated or even pathetic... as if hamlet isn't experiencing events that would make the most stoic person in the world curl up in the fetal position and scream and rip out their hair. SHOW SOME FUCKING FEELING! STOP TRYKNG TO LOOK COOL! THIS IS A PLAY ABOUT GRIEF WILL YOU FUCKING CRY ABOUT SOMETHING
my professor who assigned the movie said he likes to use it to talk about lit -> film adaptation because it makes a nice contrast to something like baz lurhmann's romeo + juliet, which is sort of compensating for the antiquity of the language by making everything about costume and background and character an over-the-top technicolor blast of passion and feeling. whereas kenbranlet 1996 is picking all the obvious/expected accoutrements--character choices, background, editing effects--so that the audience can experience and digest the shakespearean poetry without having to also think about the rest of it. this makes sense to me as an analysis but i deeply and thoroughly resent almost everything about it
#max.txt#asks#'almost' because i CAN understand the desire to try to get people to actually sit with the shakespearean language#and let it soak in. because i think people get very in their heads about it#and convince themselves they couldn't possibly understand even when they might be able to#if they took some more time / were patient with themselves / let themself get into the production#so i do get that. but i don't think that's a good enough reason to be shallower than a kiddie inflatable#kenbranlet

the way evanora possesses agatha again when she says "i can be good", like she wants to prove her own view that her daughter cant be. making alice attack her evanora, almost recreating what happened in the trial a little bit, making this new coven see what agatha will do (again, not on purpose), and making them turn on her
#i dont think evanora is like. evil. i mean no ones evil i guess but thats also kind of the point with all of these witches right?#esp for jac schaeffer it seems#anyway i think evanora was in a position where she didnt feel like she had any other options#and it's a very intense choice to make she raised this kid for 18 years#and im not sure how full a person a ghost is#'emotion ties them to this plane' and all that#ghosts might just be like kinda like this frozen traumatic moment#so i think evanora's ghost is less complex than evanora the woman#but i think also that evanora the woman HAD to tell herself 'you were born evil' to be able to like come to this course of action at all#you have to tell yousrelf SOMETHING right? something convincing enough to commit murder#i think that agatha was born evil was a justification she told herself to be able to go through with the trial#i dont think her mother believed that all of agathas life. i dont think she even believed it except for that she needed to#but as a ghsot shes stuck in that traumatic moment same as agatha#and so agatha has to hear this#this justification for why she deserves to die and will destroy any coven shes part of

[There was a flash of blue light, and two kids appeared]
Ah shit.......
Where did you take us now?
Khonshu slinks around in the shadows of the temple, having teleported here the moment he detected intruders. Every once in awhile, thieves sought this place out to search for valuables. The smart ones realized there wasn't much there, the stupid ones that tried to steal the statue of himself or ransack the place anyway were given strong convincing to leave. Or never left at all...
... But it wasn't thieves, this time. No, it was a couple of lost children. Hm.
The wind swirls around the temple with Khonshu's presence, standing off to the side to decide if he should try to reach out. They are innocent travelers of the night, and if they're here seeking shelter, they may have it.
#[I thiiink I know who this is?#You're free to let them be able to see Khonshu and freak both of them out#He thinks he's invisible rn#Or not and he might pop out and say something. Be like 'Hey I can convince these kiddos I'm real and get new faithful :>'#in character#answered asks
