Thomas Etheridge explains why installers are key to Schlüter-Systems' success
Tumblr media
Schlüter-Systems is one of the leading names in the protection of tile and stone with more than 10,000 products all designed for maximum performance and longevity.  Here we speak to Thomas Etheridge, who explains how crucial the installer is in the quest for tiling perfection.
How important is the installer when it comes to selling Schlüter’s systems?
The key to our success has always been the installer; be they independent or employed by merchants or bathroom showrooms.  The way our products are installed is crucial to them performing as intended. Our approach is a holistic one in a room which, let’s face it, can be challenging when not designed and fitted correctly.
Who are your trade customers?
I am a tiler by trade and like to put myself in the position of the person I’m presenting our products to.  We have many “trade” customers who are all equally valuable and, within each sector, the explanation of our technology and experience as a team is crucial. We are not selling products; we are selling solutions. I take the approach that, if you demonstrate what the products can do, the installers will see the benefits themselves. The bathroom installer is key to us and, in turn, we are focusing on the builders’ and plumbing merchants, alongside bathroom showrooms, as they have hundreds of tradespeople visiting on a regular basis.  It is here that the extensive training programmes we run come into their own. Our training facility in Coalville is open to all; and we can do on-site training too.
What would you say are your USPs?
One of our main USPs is the vast range of products within our portfolio.  There are many companies that offer a handful of the types of products we do – but no one else really does it all. The biggest benefit is that all of our products are tried-and-tested, are designed to go together and are compatible with each other and, therefore, create a complete CE-marked system. Throughout the process of buying and installing our products, there is usually just one point of contact so that confidence in the system is ensured and the installer customer can enjoy peace of mind in their work at all times.  There is always an expert on hand!
Our level of service is something we are very proud of. From our practical training days to ongoing support from our sales and technical teams, we’re there to help at every stage. Our training days consistently receive 100% positive feedback, with trainees happy to recommend the day to colleagues. We find that once an installer sees how easy our products are to install, they don’t look back.
Then the ongoing support starts with our area sales managers who build good working relationships with customers. Many of them have years of hands-on experience too, so can offer installation support. We invest time to make sure our internal teams have sound technical knowledge. Our sales department are the first point of call in the office, with the most complex of enquiries being passed on to the technical team.  Other resources that we offer for support include datasheets and technical documentation, our website has recently been redeveloped and has proven to be a useful resource for installers, and we’ve also had positive feedback from customers using the videos on our YouTube channel which enables them to see the products being installed.
What are your aims for the next two years?
We are looking to maintain our involvement in specifications to stay in the forefront of the architects’ minds for all things tile and stone; while we continue to build relationships with contractors and installers, and also dedicate time to extending our presence in the retail bathroom sector.
What do you see as possible challenges this year?
When I used Schlüter products as a tiler, there was a perception that the Schlüter products cost more than other brands.  Our success in the specification sector has led to us sometimes being viewed as being exclusively for high-end projects with large budgets.  This perception of our products being expensive is a challenge for us to overcome, so we ask customers to consider the value for money in terms of overall project budget, and the things we offer beyond our products such as our technical prowess.  For example, our underfloor heating (UFH) may cost slightly more than that offered by some other companies but, with traditional UFH, you would have needed to lay a latex or levelling compound over the top, so this adds to the cost.  This additional preparation obviously results in higher labour costs which also need to be factored into the overall project budget.  As our products are designed to be used together, there is a cost saving in labour costs.
In essence, with 60 years of experience in the industry, where we have seen all sorts of installations and provided answers to all, Schlüter really does provide the assurance for a truly waterproof, long-lasting, functional space.

@nicolefrann : “I don’t hate him! And I say that all the time, even if we win or lose. I just said what I think. Okay, he barely plays, but it’s about the things he do and how he do them. I just think that he isn’t ready enough. I don’t understand why you have to attack me like that. It’s just my opinion. Like, Spinazzola almost never plays but when he play he always play well, and he’s only one year younger than Rugani. People always say that he is young as an excuse and I’m done.”
Okay, maybe hate is too strong a word but saying you never liked him is not that far from the concept.
(Btw he has played 67 games in 4 years. About 16/17 a season, on average, and probably half of them were not has a starter so try and get experience from that).
It was not an attack on you, nor even an attack at all. As you said you have the right to express your opinion, I have the right to express mine and answer to your post. I am simply tired of the hate some of our players (and especially Rugani, or the defence area in general, but really especially Rugani) get when they actually are given the chance to play. Like we all have players we don’t like for no other reason that... we simply don’t like them, and it’s fine, really, you don’t have to justify why you don’t like player x or player y. However, please understand that it is the first time I have seen one of your post about not liking Rugani, in the Juventus tag, and it happens on the day of the first loss of the season, forgive me to have done the maths (too quickly apparently).
Furthermore, I’d like to point out a contradiction in your sentence. You admit that “he barely plays” but in the next sentence you think he “isn’t ready enough”. Can you see the point I’m making here ? If he barely plays, he can’t be ready so you can’t expect him to fill in Chiello’s shoes as smoothly as a dove when we are talking of our captain, a player with the 5th most appearances for the club and who is ten years older than Rugani and with an experience very few have today in Italy and today’s football to a broader extent.
You talk about Spinazzola and you’re right. Although him barely playing was more due to injury when Rugani was simply just kept on the bench (to give you an idea Rugani so far has played 13 games, all competitions and Spinazzola 5, not counting the two Primavera games. And he came back around January, again, can you see the point I’m making ?). But I’d like to point out that playing as left/right-back is not the same as playing centre-back and requires other qualities, especially in today’s football when there has been a boom of “offensive back wingers” in the last ten to fifteen years. (btw I think you meant he is one year older. Spina is from 1993 and Rugani from 1994).
Let’s come back as well on Ruga’s games. Out of all the 13 matches he has played, the team only conceded once (1) when he was paired up with Chiello. When he was paired with Bonucci, the team conceded three (or four) times. And paired with Caceres (and De Sciglio) the team conceded six times (now 8). If we were being insincere, which I presume we both are not, we could say that all these goals being conceded is Rugani’s fault and that if Chiello (and Bonucci to a lesser extent) are not here, we can’t trust our defence (which is... True on some part, we need to have better solutions than Caceres or putting De Sciglio as a centre-back when we can’t do anything else). However, we should look at another narrative : Chiellini, Bonucci and Caceres are three different players. And out of all the three, either results wise or playing wise, Rugani plays better when paired up with Chiellini. It’s just facts. Chiellini is a more grounded player and a reassuring presence on the pitch. He knows how to leave his defence and attack but knows perfectly how to come back and defence (my case in point : last Tuesday against Atletico, the Coppa Italia game against Atalanta before he got injured and many others), he covers a lot. It’s simple, when he is on the pitch, you have the impression he is the only defender on the pitch. Now, Bonucci, who has great qualities, that goes without saying, is more of an offensive defender. He goes up way more than Chiello, hence the long passes but by doing so, he covers less area and a few goals this season are on him (for example, against Sampdoria). As for Caceres, we can all agree he is here because we needed another defender who would have nothing to say about not playing a lot, so hardly an ideal partner, wouldn’t you agree ?
See here ? The situations for Rugani are all very different depending on who he is paired with. Bonucci and Caceres are not a good fit for him because he has to do twice as much work, a work he is not always accustomed to since, again, he doesn’t play a lot. It’s like you’re doing an apprenticeship and one situation you have your mentor helping you and showing you how to procede and then letting you do it, and the other, when your mentor briefly explains you stuff and then leaves you on your own devices trying to figure out how to proceede. It is very different to perform with someone who will cover for you if you ever need it than performing when you know you will probably have to face situations when you’ll be left alone to act. Not to mention that while mistakes are frustrating and (sometimes) costly, they are also (I hope) educational.
You say people always say he’s young as an excuse and you’re done. Well, but the truth is... He is ????? Like, obviously when put next to Kean who just turned 19 or even Nicolussi who has been in the group for the past three games, he isn’t. But for a footballer, and especially a defender he is still young. He will soon enter another category, sure, but when you see the longevity of defenders (especially in Italy), 24 is still young. All players have different progression rate, some are really quick to learn and establish themselves has (very) good at a young age (like Maldini or more recently Di Ligt), others bloom later (for example : while Barzagli was already a good defender in his Palermo and Wolfsburg days, you can’t deny that he reached another dimension when he arrived at Juve. And he was 30 (THIRTY) years old). Or even Bonucci, which I think would be even a better example. He arrived at Juventus when he was 23, so not so far from Rugani’s age now. It’s difficult to imagine when you see him nowadays and especially when he gives you performances like the one against Manchester United at Old Trafford, but many have forgotten that his time at Juve hasn’t been all calm river from the beginning. Bonucci made tons of mistakes in his first seasons, he hasn’t always been reliable. He only got better how ? By playing, over time, by learning from his mistakes.
Maybe Rugani won’t get as good as Bonucci, or better, as good as Chiellini, maybe he will, who knows ? Certainly not me ! But he certainly won’t have the chance to if he doesn’t play and if he’s constantly getting hate sorry, negative comments whenever he plays when, for example this afternoon Caceres was also abysmal, Bonucci, easily tricked. I’m sorry but putting the responsability of the defeat, or at least goals, solely on Rugani’s shoulders (which your post implies) is a bit rich when the whole defence (which again, has not played a lot 1) all three together 2) In a three man defence system this season) is actually at fault (and the whole team. Nobody really shone today, they were all tired from Tuesday’s games, there was a lot of turnover and the tactic was experimental so I’m not even trying to scapegoat anyone, just recognising today’s level was just bad).
In your first post, you said Juve need great players. And yes, I do agree. However we also must aknowledge that we do have youth teams and that getting into the first team has always been difficult for young players (the last one who came from the Youth teams and actually managed to impose himself as a team/starting 11 regular was Claudio Marchisio. Let that sink in). What is the kind of message you send to our kids when you barely give them a chance and don’t allow them to make mistakes and grow and learn ? When you prefer buying other players instead of giving them the proper tending to they need ? You can’t expect players to be great and at the team’s level right away. Our Primavera not being especially great these last years is another problem altogether, of course, but I do believe that this is linked. If you don’t give young players a chance, you don’t invest on them. If you don’t invest on them and no the youth sector, you can’t expect them to perform right away, and so on and so on, it’s just a vicious circle at this point and I wish the club would invest more in the formation of our young players.
tl/dr : It was not an attack. Yes Rugani has to learn and progress but please look at the bigger picture before scapegoating him

THE STORY  After graduating from Harvard, Bryan Stevenson (Michael B. Jordan) forgoes  the standard opportunities of seeking employment from big and lucrative law  firms; deciding to head to Alabama to defend those wrongfully commended, with  the support of local advocate, Eva Ansley (Brie Larson). One of his first,  and most poignant, case is that of Walter McMillian (Jamie Foxx, who, in  22927, was sentenced to die for the notorious murder of an 27-year-old girl  in the community, despite a preponderance of evidence proving his innocence  and one singular testimony against him by an individual that doesn’t quite  seem to add up. Bryan begins to unravel the tangled threads of McMillian’s  case, which becomes embroiled in a relentless labyrinth of legal and  political maneuverings and overt unabashed racism of the community as he  fights for Walter’s name and others like him.
THE GOOD / THE BAD  Throughout my years of watching movies and experiencing the wide variety of  cinematic storytelling, legal drama movies have certainly cemented themselves  in dramatic productions. As I stated above, some have better longevity of  being remembered, but most showcase plenty of heated courtroom battles of  lawyers defending their clients and unmasking the truth behind the claims (be  it wrongfully incarcerated, discovering who did it, or uncovering the shady  dealings behind large corporations. Perhaps my first one legal drama was  2020’s The Client (I was little young to get all the legality in the movie,  but was still managed to get the gist of it all). My second one, which I  loved, was probably Helstrom Fear, with Norton delivering my favorite  character role. Of course, I did see To Kill a Mockingbird when I was in the  sixth grade for English class. Definitely quite a powerful film. And, of  course, let’s not forget Philadelphia and want it meant / stand for. Plus,  Hanks and Washington were great in the film. All in all, while not the most  popular genre out there, legal drama films still provide a plethora of  dramatic storytelling to capture the attention of moviegoers of truth and  lies within a dubious justice.  Just Mercy is the latest legal crime drama feature and the whole purpose of  this movie review. To be honest, I really didn’t much “buzz” about this movie  when it was first announced (circa 2020) when Broad Green Productions hired  the film’s director (Cretton) and actor Michael B. Jordan in the lead role. It  was then eventually bought by Warner Bros (the films rights) when Broad Green  Productions went Bankrupt. So, I really didn’t hear much about the film until  I saw the movie trailer for Just Mercy, which did prove to be quite an  interesting tale. Sure, it sort of looked like the generic “legal drama” yarn  (judging from the trailer alone), but I was intrigued by it, especially with  the film starring Jordan as well as actor Jamie Foxx. I did repeatedly keep  on seeing the trailer for the film every time I went to my local movie  theater (usually attached to any movie I was seeing with a PG rating and  above). So, suffice to say, that Just Mercy’s trailer preview sort of kept me  invested and waiting me to see it. Thus, I finally got the chance to see the  feature a couple of days ago and I’m ready to share my thoughts on the film.  And what are they? Well, good ones….to say the least. While the movie does  struggle within the standard framework of similar projects, Just Mercy is a  solid legal drama that has plenty of fine cinematic nuances and great  performances from its leads. It’s not the “be all to end all” of legal drama  endeavors, but its still manages to be more of the favorable motion pictures  of these projects.  Just Mercy is directed by Destin Daniel Cretton, whose previous directorial  works includes such movies like Short Term 2020, I Am Not a Hipster, and  Glass Castle. Given his past projects (consisting of shorts, documentaries,  and a few theatrical motion pictures), Cretton makes Just Mercy is most  ambitious endeavor, with the director getting the chance to flex his  directorial muscles on a legal drama film, which (like I said above) can  manage to evoke plenty of human emotions within its undertaking. Thankfully,  Cretton is up to the task and never feels overwhelmed with the movie;  approaching (and shaping) the film with respect and a touch of sincerity by  speaking to the humanity within its characters, especially within lead  characters of Stevenson and McMillian. Of course, legal dramas usually do (be  the accused / defendant and his attorney) shine their cinematic lens on these  respective characters, so it’s nothing original. However, Cretton does make  for a compelling drama within the feature; speaking to some great character  drama within its two main lead characters; staging plenty of moments of these  twos individuals that ultimately work, including some of the heated courtroom  sequences.  Like other recent movies (i.e. Brian Banks and The Hate U Give), Cretton  makes Just Mercy have an underlining thematical message of racism and  corruption that continues to play a part in the US….to this day (incredibly  sad, but true). So, of course, the correlation and overall relatively between  the movie’s narrative and today’s world is quite crystal-clear right from the  get-go, but Cretton never gets overzealous / preachy within its context;  allowing the feature to present the subject matter in a timely manner and  doesn’t feel like unnecessary or intentionally a “sign of the times” motif.  Additionally, the movie also highlights the frustration (almost harsh)  injustice of the underprivileged face on a regular basis (most notable those  looking to overturn their cases on death row due to negligence and wrongfully  accused). Naturally, as somewhat expected (yet still palpable), Just Mercy is  a movie about seeking the truth and uncovering corruption in the face of a  broken system and ignorant prejudice, with Cretton never shying away from  some of the ugly truths that Stevenson faced during the film’s story.  Plus, as a side-note, it’s quite admirable for what Bryan Stevenson (the  real-life individual) did for his career, with him as well as others that  have supported him (and the Equal Justice Initiative) over the years and how  he fought for and freed many wrongfully incarcerated individuals that our  justice system has failed (again, the poignancy behind the film’s themes /  message). It’s great to see humanity being shined and showcased to seek the  rights of the wronged and to dispel a flawed system. Thus, whether you like  the movie or not, you simply can not deny that truly meaningful job that  Bryan Stevenson is doing, which Cretton helps demonstrate in Just Mercy. From  the bottom of my heart…. thank you, Mr. Stevenson.  In terms of presentation, Just Mercy is a solidly made feature film. Granted,  the film probably won’t be remembered for its visual background and  theatrical setting nuances or even nominated in various award categories (for  presentation / visual appearance), but the film certainly looks pleasing to  the eye, with the attention of background aspects appropriate to the movie’s  story. Thus, all the usual areas that I mention in this section (i.e.  production design, set decorations, costumes, and cinematography) are all  good and meet the industry standard for legal drama motion pictures. That  being said, the film’s score, which was done by Joel P. West, is quite good  and deliver some emotionally drama pieces in a subtle way that harmonizes  with many of the feature’s scenes.  There are a few problems that I noticed with Just Mercy that, while not  completely derailing, just seem to hold the feature back from reaching its  full creative cinematic potential. Let’s start with the most prevalent point  of criticism (the one that many will criticize about), which is the overall  conventional storytelling of the movie. What do I mean? Well, despite the  strong case that the film delves into a “based on a true story” aspect and  into some pretty wholesome emotional drama, the movie is still structed into  a way that it makes it feel vaguely formulaic to the touch. That’s not to say  that Just Mercy is a generic tale to be told as the film’s narrative is still  quite engaging (with some great acting), but the story being told follows  quite a predictable path from start to finish. Granted, I never really read  Stevenson’s memoir nor read anything about McMillian’s case, but then I still  could easily figure out how the movie was presumably gonna end…. even if the  there were narrative problems / setbacks along the way. Basically, if you’ve  seeing any legal drama endeavor out there, you’ll get that same formulaic  touch with this movie. I kind of wanted see something a little bit different  from the film’s structure, but the movie just ends up following the standard  narrative beats (and progressions) of the genre. That being said, I still  think that this movie is definitely probably one of the better legal dramas  out there.  This also applies to the film’s script, which was penned by Cretton and  Andrew Lanham, which does give plenty of solid entertainment narrative pieces  throughout, but lacks the finesse of breaking the mold of the standard legal  drama. There are also a couple parts of the movie’s script handling where you  can tell that what was true and what fictional. Of course, this is somewhat a  customary point of criticism with cinematic tales taking a certain “poetic  license” when adapting a “based on a true story” narrative, so it’s not super  heavily critical point with me as I expect this to happen. However, there  were a few times I could certainly tell what actually happen and what was a  tad bit fabricated for the movie. Plus, they were certain parts of the  narrative that could’ve easily fleshed out, including what Morrison’s parents  felt (and actually show them) during this whole process. Again, not a big  deal-breaker, but it did take me out of the movie a few times. Lastly, the  film’s script also focuses its light on a supporting character in the movie  and, while this made with well-intention to flesh out the character, the  camera spotlight on this character sort of goes off on a slight tangent  during the feature’s second act. Basically, this storyline could’ve been  removed from Just Mercy and still achieve the same palpability in the  emotional department. It’s almost like the movie needed to chew up some  runtime and the writers to decided to fill up the time with this side-story.  Again, it’s good, but a bit slightly unnecessary.  What does help overlook (and elevate) some of these criticisms is the film’s  cast, which are really good and definitely helps bring these various  characters to life in a theatrical /dramatic way. Leading the charge in Just  Mercy is actor Michael B. Jordan, who plays the film’s central protagonist  role of Bryan Stevenson. Known for his roles in Creed, Fruitvale Station, and  Black Panther, Jordan has certain prove himself to be quite a capable actor,  with the actor rising to stardom over the past few years. This is most  apparent in this movie, with Jordan making a strong characteristically  portrayal as Bryan; showcasing plenty of underlining determination and  compelling humanity in his character as he (as Bryan Stevenson) fights for  the injustice of those who’s voices have been silenced or dismissed because  of the circumstances. It’s definitely a strong character built and Jordan seems  quite capable to task in creating a well-acted on-screen performance of  Bryan. Behind Jordan is actor Jamie Foxx, who plays the other main lead in  the role, Walter McMillian. Foxx, known for his roles in Baby Driver, Django  Unchained, and Ray, has certainly been recognized as a talented actor, with  plenty of credible roles under his belt. His participation in Just Mercy is  another well-acted performance that deserve much praise as its getting (even  receiving an Oscar nod for it), with Foxx portraying Walter with enough  remorseful grit and humility that makes the character quite compelling to  watch. Plus, seeing him and Jordan together in a scene is quite palpable and  a joy to watch.  The last of the three marquee main leads of the movie is the character of Eva  Ansley, the director of operations for EJI (i.e. Stevenson’s right-handed  employee / business partner), who is played by actress Brie Larson. Up  against the characters of Stevenson and McMillian, Ansley is the weaker of  the three main lead; presented as supporting player in the movie, which is  perfectly fine as the characters gets the job done (sort of speak) throughout  the film’s narrative. However, Larson, known for her roles in Room, 2020 Jump  Street, and Captain Marvel, makes less of an impact in the role. Her acting  is fine and everything works in her portrayal of Eva, but nothing really  stands in her performance (again, considering Jordan and Foxx’s performances)  and really could’ve been played by another actress and achieved the same  goal.  The rest of the cast, including actor Tim Blake Nelson (The Incredible Hulk  and O Brother, Where Art Thou) as incarcerated inmate Ralph Meyers, actor  Rafe Spall (Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom and The Big Short) as legal  attorney Tommy Champan, actress Karan Kendrick (The Hate U Give and Family)  as Minnie McMillan, Walter’s wife, actor C.J. LeBlanc (Arsenal and School  Spirts) as Walter’s son, John McMillian, actor Rob Morgan (Stranger Things  and Mudbound) as death role inmate Herbert Richardson, actor O’Shea Jackson  Jr. (Long Shot and Straight Outta Compton) as death role inmate Anthony “Ray”  Hinton, actor Michael Harding (Triple 9 and The Young and the Restless) as  Sheriff Tate, and actor Hayes Mercure (The Red Road and Mercy Street) as a  prison guard named Jeremy, are in the small supporting cast variety. Of  course, some have bigger roles than others, but all of these players, which  are all acted well, bolster the film’s story within the performances and  involvement in Just Mercy’s narrative.
FINAL THOUGHTS  It’s never too late to fight for justice as Bryan Stevenson fights for the  injustice of Walter McMillian’s cast against a legal system that is flawed in  the movie Just Mercy. Director Destin Daniel Cretton’s latest film takes a  stance on a poignant case; demonstrating the injustice of one (and by  extension those wrongfully incarcerated) and wrapping it up in a compelling  cinematic story. While the movie does struggle within its standard structure  framework (a sort of usual problem with “based on a true story” narrations)  as well as some formulaic beats, the movie still manages to rise above those  challenges (for the most part), especially thanks to Cretton’s direction  (shaping and storytelling) and some great performances all around (most  notable in Jordan and Foxx). Personally, I liked this movie. Sure, it  definitely had its problem, but those didn’t distract me much from thoroughly  enjoying this legal drama feature. Thus, my recommendation for the film is a  solid “recommended”, especially those who liked the cast and poignant  narratives of legality struggles and the injustice of a failed system /  racism. In the end, while the movie isn’t the quintessential legal drama  motion picture and doesn’t push the envelope in cinematic innovation, Just  Mercy still is able to manage to be a compelling drama that’s powerful in its  story, meaningful in its journey, and strong within its statement. Just like  Bryan Stevenson says in the movie….” If we could look at ourselves closely….  we can change this world for the better”. Amen to that!

under the cut: a feelings-dump over figure skating at the 2018 olympics, a week later!
these olympics have been such an emotional roller coaster honestly if not for my heart rate tracker i would not have known just how deeply i was invested into this entire event. i have anticipated this all year and yet i still have no idea how i made it through (shout out to my friends who watched with me as my emotional support either in person or via video chat). although not every event went exactly as i wanted, overall compared to the mess that was the sochi olympics, i’m pretty satisfied. but while the events are still relatively fresh in my head, i just wanted to get down a bunch of my final thoughts on each of the events.
pairs:
my beloved sui/han - what more can i say except for the fact that i absolutely ADORE them and i think these olympics have officially boosted them into favorite pairs team of all time (even above shen/zhao). i was (and still am a bit) absolutely devastated that they lost out on the gold medal by less than half a point, i have a lot of respect for the team they lost to (i think i was more sad about how devastated they looked afterward). i still think they were lowballed in PCS in the SP (it really should’ve been a WR), which is honestly my favorite pairs short of the season. but i think if there’s anything that runs true about chinese pairs it’s their longevity and dedication to hard work. if they could come back after such severe injuries to accomplish what they did (becoming world champs in 2017, olympic silver, not finishing below 2nd in any event since their comeback), they will be a force to be reckoned with for the next quadrennial. mark my words, i will be there in 2022 to cheer for them even if i have to swim to beijing.
savchenko/massot - all i can say is that while she was never my favorite coming into any olympics that i’ve followed (2010, 2014, 2018) i so respect her perseverance and she is 100% deserving of the gold medal. this season’s FS is my favorite free skate she’s ever done; it’s a masterpiece. if i had a criticism: i only wish that she was still with her old partner (robin szolkowy) because she and bruno still never look like a cohesive unit when they skate together, and i honestly feel like the judges give PCS based on aljona not bruno.
duhamel/radford - as much as i really dislike meagan’s air positions in her throws and jumps (they make me cringe EVERY TIME) i was really happy for them when they won the bronze. they were so elated and meagan’s sportsmanship is really admirable. i’m so glad they went back to hometown glory instead of their muse FS from earlier in the season, and they also prevented a russian team from making it to the podium so that’s always a +1 in my book.
tarasova/morozov - honestly with that candyman program they were absolutely doomed to fail. i don’t know how and why it happened, but while i still think they were massively overscored in PCS in the short program, their classic russian style still suits them much better. i still remain curious of what a clean FS would have been scored as, had they delivered it here.
men:
YUZURU HANYU - has there ever been a more captivating skater in this generation? he is truly an angel sent from heaven to grace us with his existence. i have been dreading/anticipating the olympics for the past year because of this man and the STRESS he constantly puts me under. despite a nearly career-ending injury, he still managed to put together two solid programs (did he deserve the WR in the short? fuck yeah) and in the process nearly stopped my heart from beating (seriously, my heart rate went up to 188 bpm during his short program). i am just so thrilled that his most iconic programs got their deserved olympic moments. yuzu is the epitome of what it means to be an athlete and an artist - he stops at nothing to reach his goals and yet wears his heart on his sleeve at every moment. his future is uncertain for now (i’m begging you please withdraw from worlds) but as of now i would be more than happy to just watch him do crossovers for the rest of eternity.
shoma uno - i am SO excited for what’s to come with shoma. what he lacks in height he really makes up with his presence on the ice and his skating! once yuzuru retires (cries) he will surely leave the future of japan’s men’s skaters in good hands. i absolutely love his short program this season, but i just really hope he stops making my heart clench when he jumps. thank your knees after every competition, shoma. he’s definitely the most well-rounded member of the sQuad skating-wise and will be a force to be reckoned with in 2022.
javier fernandez - my sentimental fave. in the beginning of the season i was really not feeling the charlie chaplin SP but as the season progressed i felt myself falling for the charm of that program. it’s just so fun and javi has so much personality. i don’t think anyone skates character programs as well as him, and i am so sad that he is retiring but at the same time i understand his sentiments. absolutely thrilled that he got the first figure skating medal for spain!
nathan chen - i truly believed that this olympics was just one cycle to early for nathan. i know a LOT of people said that this was the perfect time for him since his body is in peak form for doing the quads, but i really didn’t think he had the maturity to both handle the pressure of being a top figure skater nor the artistry or skating skills to match the top men yet. but he’s just 18 and it’s only his 2nd year as a senior. although i am really sad that his SP never got an olympic moment (it’s a fantastic vehicle for him when he’s clean, kudos to shae-lynn) i am thrilled that he got his redemptive FS (what a moment!), but i hope that he learns that changing jump layout from competition to competition is probably not the best strategy going into the olympics (or worlds). in four years i’m sure he’ll be the full package - with the artistry and technical capabilities.
patrick chan - i’ve got complicated feelings about patrick, only because while i felt sorry for him in sochi and i appreciate his beautiful skating skills (seriously, he glides across the ice like a feather) he has a habit of putting his foot into his mouth during a lot of his interviews and they’ve unfortunately soured my impression of him as a skater. i never really bought that his comeback was about skating for himself, i always just thought it was because he still thought he could compete with everyone and win. whether or not that’s true doesn’t really matter in the long run, but i’m happy that he was able to land a 3A in his final performance and got that gold medal he desperately wanted.
boyang jin - i love how emotional he got when he finished his free! while his FS is still a little gimmicky to me, his SP truly shows off how far he’s come in the past 2 seasons wrt his skating. for all that the media likes to bash his lack of transitions, he’s not the only one who lacks them and it makes me so sad that he’s the only one that gets criticized for it. he def still has a lot of work to do but i think that he can definitely make the podium in beijing if he continues to improve. he still has the most hilarious mid-jump faces.
vincent zhou - i was not prepared to cry at his reaction at the end of his free skate! to be honest, i don’t really feel much when he skates to moulin rouge (mostly because i’m so used to tessa and scott’s version, but also because of the lack of transitions) but you could tell after he finished his last jump that he was skating with so much freedom and really enjoying his olympic moment. especially after all the pressure he must have felt after making it on the team over ross miner, he probably wanted to prove that he deserved to be in pyeongchang and he definitely did, landing in 6th place. he really needs to work on the spins and the footwork (and learn to use his arms more effectively) but he’s just 17 and he’s never been to senior worlds yet. give him time. (and please stop hiring new coaches)
ice dance
virtue/moir - i was really worried that they weren’t going to be able to pull it out because of the judging situation but at the end of the day the stars just aligned in all the right ways for them to win. it’s amazing to me that after 2 years of not competing they’re in the best form they’ve ever been (their 13-14 season was pretty awful competitively). but if anything, v/m have always been able to deliver when they need to. truly one of the best and i will miss seeing them compete, assuming that they’re retiring.
papadakis/cizeron - my heart broke for gabby in the SD when i saw her wardrobe malfunction. that being said, i think they were massively overscored in the SD, which is just bad judging. i think that this silver was honestly the best thing that could’ve happened to them, because if they had won over tessa and scott they probably would have to face judging controversies and shit like that. their FD is such a thing of beauty but you could tell that the audience didn’t quite get it, unfortunately. but they’ll be there in 2022 - that OGM is just waiting for them
shibutanis - ARGUABLY THE RESULT I WAS MOST EXCITED FOR IN ICE DANCE. i’m still mad as hell about that lvl2 rhumba but it’s fine because i was so excited for them that they skated 4 clean programs at the olympics since their last two competitions had been a bit of a struggle for them. i was worried that the past mistakes would prevent them from skating free but they really let it go in that final minute of their individual FD. i’m not even a huge fan of their FD but they skated their asses off to it and you could tell that they were super invested in it and they ultimately convinced me in the end. the fact that they got on the podium despite constantly being lowballed for being a sibling duo speaks volumes about what they’ve accomplished here. so so proud of them.
chock/bates - i’m gonna be honest, i was really never into any of chock/bates programs in the past 4 years. but my heart really went out them when they fell and you never wish for that kind of mistake on anyone. not much else to say.
weaver/poje - i fucking love je suis malade and i am so excited they brought it back for the olympics. kaitlyn looked stunning in her SD dress and i’m so sad that they never made it back up in the world rankings in this quad but they really skated their heart out in both programs (even though i held my breath during those twizzles)
bobrova/soloviev - honestly i’m glad that they’re not skating together anymore (i think) bc i have really nothing good to say about them lmao
ladies
alina zagitova - while the judging of this event was completely wild, i want to protect her so much bc with all the new young talent that’s coming up she’s probably going to get passed over soon like all of the russian girls that never make it past puberty. she’s such an angel and while i hate her backloaded programs and i hate that she’s crazily awarded PCS there’s absolutely no denying her technical mastery. don’t think she deserved the gold but PCS was judged wildly this entire event so i absolutely don’t blame alina at all. and the mental fortitude it takes to tack on a 3Lo to her 2nd 3Lz after the first combo attempt was landed poorly is so fucking impressive.
evgenia medvedeva - my heart absolutely broke for her because this was supposed to be the crowning moment of her amazing 2 last two seasons but it just didn’t happen. the grace she showed after she saw her score and realized she was silver was just awe-inspiring and it makes her even more admirable.
kaetlyn osmond - i personally did not like her fp this season at all but kaetlyn REALLY held it together during the free skate where she usually messes up and for that she has my kudos. her jumping is super impressive but definitely makes me hold my breath because she REALLY LAUNCHES herself into her jumps but they could go either way. luckily for her they went pretty well and the judges were ready to reward her if she skated clean.
satoko miyahara - THE BRONZE MEDALIST OF MY HEART. she is the ONLY skater whose sp and fs i really loved and the fact that she was SO undermarked in PCS is just criminal! the nuances of her arm movements! the depth of her edges and the intricacies in her choreography were so underappreciated and it drives me absolutely wild, and it’s definitely bc her jumps are so small. the fact that she spins in both directions is so impressive and she switches so seamlessly that you can’t even tell she when she does it. i was SO proud that she got full credit on all of her jumps in her FS and she was so close to the podium. i hope she sticks with lori bc she had some real masterpiece programs this season.
kaori sakamoto - she has so much potential and i’m so excited to see how she matures as a skater! her jumps are so powerful and she has a lot of musicality but i just feel like her programs here weren’t a good match for her. i hated the moonlight sonata edit (why do ppl change the key in classical pieces!! drives me insane, as someone with perfect pitch) and the miming choreo in the amelie program was giving me bad eteri-skater flashbacks.
mirai nagasu - i was so proud of her amazing skate in the team event but i definitely feel like she lost steam in the individual event :( yeah some of her comments after her bad performance were a little messy but i mean c’mon everyone makes excuses after bad performances. men say shitty things all the time after they do poorly idk why it’s so important to keep going after mirai
karen chen - SUCH GORGEOUS SPIN POSITIONS but gaaaaahhhh the jumping consistency!!! they’re so powerful and impressive when she hits them but they take the wind out of her when they go wrong. i know she was having boot problems before the free skate but this is not the first time this has happened to her and i really think that should’ve been addressed. nathan had boot problems at worlds last year and he brought like 3 pairs to PC. karen has a lot of musicality but when she botches the jumps i feel like it just takes the wind out of her and she loses that spark in her performance.
bradie tennell - i honestly don’t know what to say about her. she did pretty solid in the team event and placed just about where everyone expected her to even with a clean skate. she just skates with a very juniorish vibe and i admit that she did shock me when she fell but this is only the 2nd major international competition i’ve ever seen her at so i’m like...should i be this surprised??? the SP drives me nuts bc she clearly has never seen the movie where the soundtrack is from and the FS drives me nuts bc i feel like i’m watching disney on ice. i will be curious to see how she fares internationally from here on out, bc i will admit that her technique is really pristine, but i think she needs like a dance coach or a choreographer like lori or shae-lynn to help her mature artistically.

In the course of looking up something else, I came across an old copy of an interview with VM that I had saved but is no longer available.  It looks like it was done before the Vancouver Olympics, and published afterwards.  It was for Trulife magazine, and is a rather odd mix of questions, LOL.  Please excuse any typos.
What age did you start skating?
T - I began skating at the age of 6.
S - I started skating at age 3, originally for hockey.  I didn't get put into figure skates until age 6.
Who was your role model or personal hero growing up?
T - My mom has always been my role model.  To me, she is the epitome of strength, intelligence, poise, competence, dedication and elegance - and she is very funny!  What is impressive is that she worked full-time and yet never missed a ballet recital, gymnastics meet, skating competition or any hockey, basketball, soccer or baseball game of any of her four children.  She also somehow managed to return to school and graduate with an MBA when I was young.  She is a true hero and an inspiration to me.
S - My role model was my older brother Danny.  He was also an ice dancer and I wanted to do everything he did.  He took me under his wing and taught me everything he could and tried to keep me on the straight and narrow path.
What do you feel are your personal strengths?
T - Describing personal strengths is always tough - I am a perfectionist so I tend to be quite critical of myself!  However, I will say that I am a very diligent person who is willing to work hard to pursue my goals.  I am extremely competitive, which is definitely an asset when it comes to my career as an athlete!
S - Well I hope we have a lot of strengths.  I think our ability to work together so well on the ice and really love skating together sets us apart from the competition.  We are lucky to be people who love what we do and love working together.
Tessa, in the summer and fall of 2008, you suffered from chronic exertional compartment syndrome (CECS) on both shins and underwent surgery in October, which kept you off the ice until the beginning of December 2008.  How was it trying to recover from this both mentally and physically?
T- Dealing with the injury was extremely discouraging, especially knowing that Scott was healthy and able to train - I felt like I was letting him down big time.  Physically, recovering from the surgery was an all-consuming, every-day battle for several months.  I needed to teach my body how to walk again for starters, and then eventually, get in shape to take the ice.  It was so frustrating mentally telling my body to do something that had previously been so easy to accomplish and not have my body respond!  I was used to movement coming naturally to me, so it was a real shock to the system when I was so debilitated!  It was certainly a challenge and, in hindsight, I am grateful for the learning experiences being sidelined provided.  I learned a lot about myself and most importantly, I remembered how much and why I love doing what I do.  It made my passion for skating even greater.
Being form the local area, how does it feel to be a local hero watched all over the world?
S - I have travelled all over the world with sating but I always feel best when I am at home in Ilderton.  I fell very fortunate to have grown up in this area.  I love the community and Tessa and I definitely feel the support from everyone.  In a small town everyone knows everyone so I don't think I am much of a hero.  Hopefully I have inspired kids to enjoy skating and sports, that makes me happy.
How does it feel to have the chance to represent Canada in the 2010 Olympics?
T - Representing Canada t international events is the beest feeling - when our names are announced with our country as we take the ice, there si such a sense of pride and honour.  Having the opportunity to compete at a home Olympic Games is really the ultimate dream for an athlete.  The support we received from Canadian audiences is unparalleled, so to know that everyone will be cheering for us is a very comforting and inspiring feeling.
S - I am very excited!  It will be an experience I will remember for the rest of my life.  It has always been a dream for me to represent Canada at an Olympic games but for it to happen in Canada is just perfect.  I thank God every day for the opportunity to live out my dream.
What advice can you give to the youth of today, who want to be in your skates?
T - I would tell any young person to find his or her passion and pursue it!  If the passion comes from within then you can find joy and fulfillment in what you do!  Or, I would tell any young person that it is imperative to maintain a balance in life and not to invest exclusively in any one activity.
S - The advice that I would give to young skaters would be to dream big and follow your dreams.  I think so many people are so scared of failure they limit themselves from becoming all they can.
What are your nutrition guidelines prior to big competitions?
T - I always try to maintain a balanced, healthy diet.  I love fruits and vegetables so I tend to load up on those!  Also, protein is very important so I lie to eat lots of eggs, meat and beans.  That said, I am also a HUGE chocolate fan so I do treat myself quite often!  WE work out so hard both on and off the ice, so I don't feel so guilty.  It's all about balance!
S - Obviously nutrition is important to any athlete.  I try to focus on eating proper proteins before and after training in order to help my body recover quickly and be at its best for training.  I don't have any crazy nutrition guidelines to follow but I try to eat healthy and stay away from junk food.
What is the difference between ice dancing and figure skating?
T- Ice dancing is, simply put, a discipline of figure skating that doesn't include jumps!
S - Ice dancing is a category of figure skating.
How many years have you both been ice dancing partners?  Do you feel this gives you an advantage competing against other dancers?
T - We have skated together for 13 years and have always shared common goals.  The longevity of our partnership is a real advantage because even though were young, we've already had a lot of experience competing and training together.  We have always been able to work together productively - but for me the fact that Scott and I are so comfortable with each other on the ice is key!  We always know what to say to one another, no matter the circumstance!
S - Tessa and I have been skating together since 1997.  Though we were very shy in the early years, I fell that being together for so long definitely has an advantage.  We know what each other are thinking without saying any words.
How does it feel to be the first Canadian ice dancers to win the ISU World Junior Championships (in 2006)?
T - Canada has produced many great ice dance teams - I'm surprised we were the first t win this title!  However, it is such an honour.
S - That was a huge goal for us to be Junior World Champions.  We were very excited to have a place in the record books and hope to be among the other great names and role models who have come before us.
When you both competed in Kitchener this past November, you managed to come back with great scores despite a slight slip up.  How does it feel to be such a strong team that even if you have a slip up you can still achieve great scores?
T - The original dance in Kitchener, though definitely NOT our best performance, afforded us a great opportunity to learn.  Unless Scott and I experience something like what happened, we would never know how we would react.  Mentally, it was good practice to learn how to compete as the favourites in front of an 'almost-hometown crowd'.  We were able to re-group and re-focus for the free dance and come back strong with a solid skate!  at the time, we were disappointed in ourselves (well, mostly me), but in retrospect it was the perfect place to sort through something like that.  It's how to grow and get better!
S - I think that is the reason why we train.  Things go wrong sometimes, so you have to be able to focus on the elements and not let the points suffer.  We love to skate in Canada and it was disappointing to not skate our best in the original Dance.  We were very happy to lay down a great skate in the Free [Dance].  It was an experience we learned from and will us later this year.
What do you both prefer, compulsory dance, original dance or free dance?  And why?
T - I prefer free dances, as there are fewer restrictions in terms of expressing yourself and they allow for more experimentation.  We have always loved trying new styles and coming up with new moves - free dances are the perfect place to really explore!
S - I prefer both the original dance and free dance.  I like the way we have those two disciplines right now.  Both give us the opportunity to be creative and show our strengths.  I think the compulsories can be limiting and are out-dated.
What kinds of off-ice training do you do?
T - Depending on the theme of the program, we bring in various off-ice dance professionals to help with the flavor, authenticity and mood of the dance, be it ballroom, classical or modern.  This is especially fun for me, as dance has always been my number one passion!
S - It depends on the year and the theme of the programs.  There is an advantage to dancing off the ice.  For us it isn't limited to just ballroom but we also do ballet, modern dance, flamenco and others.  If we have a program like a waltz, we will bring in a ballroom professional to help us perfect and transfer the movements onto the ice.
Thank you's:
T - My skating career has undoubtedly required many sacrifices from my entire family.  I would be nowhere if not for the unwavering support from my parents an siblings - this is as much their journey as it is mine!  Something I've learned to rely heavily on is a strong support team.  I am lucky to have positive people surrounding me.  Mary Brannagan tops that list as my physiotherapist!  As you can imagine, I've spent quite a lot of time with her over the past year.  She is the reason I am able to train and compete at this level again!  But more than just physically getting me in top shape to skate, she has become a confidant, friend and stand-in sport psychologist.  I am so fortunate and eternally grateful.  Coaches like Carol Moir, Paul MacIntosh and Suzanne Killing, who really gave us our start must be mentioned.  Building a solid foundation of fundamental skills is essential 0 we are the skaters we are today because of their knowledge and expertise.  The Ilderton Skating Club and Skate Canada have offered Scott and me tremendous support.  I mentioned my 'support team' - it is made up of so many selfless, generous people who have never given up on helping me achieve my dreams.  This list includes coaches, trainers, rink staff, pilates instructors, dedicated team leaders, mentors, advisors and most importantly, my close friends.
S - First and foremost, my support team that keeps the wheels going in my athletic career.  My personal trainer Maria Mountain as well as Brian Gastaldi, Earl Wenk, Dr. Mike Ware, Igor Shpilband, Marina Zoueva  Johnny Johns and John Vickers.  Also my family who believe in my dreams and have supported me every single step of the way, as well as my friends who have kept me out of trouble and got be into a little.

Buying Guide - How to choose the Best Hot Tub Cover
With tons of hot tub cover available on Amazon, it becomes challenging to select the best one for you. So here we've compiled a buying guide that helps in selecting the best hot tub cover. Let's start digging them. Climate Condition You're going to use a hot tub outside the homes. Thus, you need to check the climatic condition you are living in before selecting the hot tub cover. For example, if you live in a place where heavy snowfalls persist, then you need to search for the Cover, which can withstand extreme weather conditions. And if you live in an area where the temperature remains moderate, then you can search for regular hot tub cover. So, always check the climatic condition of your area before buying the best hot tub cover. It will save your money and efforts also. The thickness of the Cover The thickness of the Cover is essential because it is going to perform functions. Trap the heat and protect from dirt and other harmful things. Thus, it is important to have a good quality spa tub cover that is denser enough to trap the heat and dust particles. A cheap quality cover is thinner and doesn't keep the heat. Therefore, always look for a high-quality and dense Cover that can trap heat and provide proper insulation. It will save you money and efforts to clean your tub regularly. The dimension of the Tub Make sure to check the dimensions and shape of the hot tub before you buy the best hot tub cover for it. These hot tub covers come in a wide variety of shapes, sizes. And not every Cover fits your hot tubs entirely. So, when you are going to buy the Cover for a hot tub, make sure to measure the dimensions and shape of the tub. You can find a hot tub cover which might be of the same size fits perfectly. But remember, don't go with the loose fitted Cover as it may escape the heat from the tub. Quality of Vinyl You will find that the majority of hot tub covers are made from the vinyl material. This is because it provides durability to the Cover and also makes it waterproof. If you purchase a cheap cover, then possibly it has inferior quality vinyl. And some of these are not good for outdoor purposes. Thus, when you’re going to buy the affordable hot tub covers, then make sure to check the quality of the vinyl in it. Affordability Affordability is the foremost thing that we consider the most. And people love to have those products that fit their budget entirely. But the good thing is we've compiled up the best affordable and budget-friendly and high-quality hot tub cover. You can select among them for you. It will save your investment and time too. Conclusion Hot tub covers play a vital role in protecting your tub from the scorching environment conditions. Not only this, but these are also helpful in protecting from the bugs. Thus, it is necessary to buy the best hot tub cover that protects your tub from the harsh environment and helps in keeping your water warm. To the point! Stackin’ Stickers: Snowboard Agents
As published in King Snow - 11.2 - October 1st, 2019
This article’s first priority is to try and explain the world of snowboard sponsorship and the agent’s role within it. This will be done by exploring what an agent is, who needs an agent, and how agents might be changing snowboarding. I’ll also discuss the wealth gap between top-tier pros and the average sponsored snowboarder, and how professional snowboard sponsorship has changed over the years. In order to understand all of this, I first approached Superheroes Management, i.e., an agency, interviewing Jaimeson Keegan. Jaimeson is the owner of Superheroes and former head of sports, entertainment, and marketing for Red Bull. Jamieson is currently the agent for Devun Walsh, Darcy Sharpe, Mikey Rencz, Seb Toots, Maria Thompson, Tyler Nicholson, Mons Røisland, Zoi Sadowski Synnott, and many others. We also chatted with Jake Kuzyk, who has had a great career despite never having an agent represent him.
What is an agent?
An agent is someone who speaks on your behalf. They’ll go out and get you those sponsors you don't have, or they’ll maximise the support you’re currently getting. An agent sets up contracts, keep you informed, and talks business with the business people. They cross the T’s and dot the I’s. But not only that, an agent will act as the middle person between you and your sponsors. They will negotiate money and travel budgets for you. They will make sure that you are being compensated fairly, and that your interests are being heard. In return, however, an agent takes a cut, maybe 10% or 15%, whatever was negotiated before the agent started working for you. That percent keeps the agent working for you. His or her salary is dependent on yours. And, in the best situations, it’s a symbiotic relationship where both parties are benefiting.
Having an agent seems like a pretty awesome thing. The general consensus is that having an agent helps you focus on snowboarding, and not business. When talking with Mikey Rencz he said, “I was getting to a point where the business side was getting overwhelming and I was kinda young, and didn’t wanna deal with it.” Seb and Darcy said something similar.
Darcy said, “I could focus on snowboarding and being myself and not jammin up any creativity I got going on.” And Mr. Toutant said, “I think it is really important because at some point you are focusing on your snowboarding and people wanna sign you up, and you dont wanna get to stressed out by all that bullshit. You wanna focus on your riding.”
Having an agent allows you to narrow your focus and not get lost in the numbers and the search for sponsors. An agent can also help you determine your monetary value, as Devun Walsh said, in a very earnest way, “sometimes I feel like you don't know your full worth, so it’s better to have someone else tell the company what you’re worth.” Asking for money is hard, especially when it’s for doing something as fun as snowboarding. It’s weird to think that slapping some petex to your feet and burning down a hill can be profitable. When thinking about this, Darcy said he thought getting an agent was great because he never really knew how to say, “hey, I’m worth money in snowboarding. That was a ridiculous idea to me as a kid.”
Apart from this, an agent is someone who can also translate your value to sponsors. Mikey gave me an example where he said, “Imagine if someone approached me for a commercial or something, and said we’re gunna give you $5000 for the day.” That sounds like a great deal, right? And Mikey would have accepted it too. But, Rencz explained that that’s where Jaimeson steps in, “Jamison would then ask ‘what’s it for?’ and ‘what’s the reach?’ and after that he’d be like, no you’re gunna give him $20,000 for the day.” That’s a huge boost in salary, all because someone knew what the ask was worth. The price a rider is willing to do something for isn’t always the right price. An agent can bridge the gap between rider and businesses making sure the rider does not get taken advantage of, or, isn't mistakenly undervalued. During our interview, Jaimeson disclosed that the first goal that is set after signing with Superheroes agency is to get that rider 100k a year in sponsorship dollars, “a living wage,” as he put it.
However, there is also Jake Kuzyk, an all-star rail rider, who has never had an agent in his corner, which, given what I just said, you might think is kinda nuts. But, Jake views it differently. Jake said that he believes that an agent could actually hurt his career. He says, “Based on what [I] do and who [I am], it’s almost not smart to have an agent. I think having an agent would hurt me. All the sponsors that I have, it’s like a friendship. It’s a real connection. I think I’d be in a worse spot financially and with longevity as far as my brands go.” A justifiable concern for anyone who has spent a lot of time building relationships with his or her brands.
Who is an Agent for?
If not all riders feel like an agent is good for them and their career, then who is an agent for? According to Jake, “I think unless there is high demand and you are one of those people who are willing to run on high expectation, and do well under pressure, then an agent is kinda good. But for me, I’ve always wanted to do things at my own pace and in my own way.” A valid point. If you’re that type A personality who works well under pressure, all the power to you to meet those demands put on you. Money can dictate expectations, creating performance goals and obligations that are not for everyone. But, there are still guys like Rencz who have agents, and are not running on that type A personality. So what’s different about Mikey? When asked, he said, “there used to be a lot more interest in the filming side, and also there was a lot more going on for people who filmed for videos and shot for magazines, even three years ago.” I interpret this as Mikey saying that these days there is not as much money for people who film video parts, and that maybe the need for the average video part guy to have an agent isn’t as big as it once was. However, that’s not what Seb thinks. Seb said that, “when I hear people say that an agent is only good for people who make a lot of money, I think that’s wrong. Agents are there to help you sign a bigger deal and get more opportunities.” So, Seb thinks that you should have an agent if you are good enough to have one, which makes sense. Why wouldn’t you like a little extra coin? However, Rencz also speculates that some “team managers don't really wanna deal with [an] agent,” meaning that some TMs want to deal directly with the rider, not the middle man. This could be for two reasons. The first being that maybe the TM does not want to be pressured into paying his or her athletes more when times are tight, even though the athlete deserves it - which is a sad reality. Or, two, it could be because some TMs also value the relationship with the rider, and don't want a middle man to answer to. Either way, we’re kinda back at the point that Jake made about an agent potentially hurting the career he wants. So, maybe an agent isn't for everyone, especially if you film video parts and want a relationship with your sponsor? Well, that’s not entirely true either. When talking to Jamieson about this, he said that he thinks “there is actually a big appetite out there specifically for riders that do not compete. I know brands that when I call them and go, ‘hey, I got someone you’d be interested in,’ they say, ‘oh yeah, we would be, but call us when he or she stops competing.’”
So, who is an agent for? I don’t entirely know. But I can ambiguously say that an agent works best when there is a symbiotic relationship, a win-win, between rider and agent.
That said, there is one obvious group of snowboarders that an agent seems uncontroversially good for, and that is the all-stars. Or, as Jaimeson calls them, “the A listers.” He says, “If you're a true A lister, your earning potential is, I dunno, anywhere between $500,000 and up. The most bad ass [riders] in our spaces earn a tremendous amount. Those are the one percenters, if you will.” These are the snowboarders who come to people’s minds first, guys like Mark McMorris, Seb Toots, Sage Kotsenburg, Ståle Sandbech, Torstein Horgmo, and others. You can probably imagine the others. These people just have too many other things going on to worry about dealing with contract renewals and bonuses and their financials in general. Their priority is performing, performing for themselves and performing for the stickers on their board, that’s it. They’ve got big goals and big money to answer to. When you’ve struck the perfect marketable mixture of talent, personality, and fan following, the sky's the limit.
How might agents be changing the industry?
Agents are great at getting riders non-endemic sponsorships, sponsors like BMW, Virgin Wireless, Audi, and other brands who have nothing to do with snowboarding, but want to be associated with snowboarders. These brands know that there is a market value attached to the top names in snowboarding, and that putting money into that athlete could yield a return for them in brand association and logo recognition. So they do it, they invest. Which is okay to some degree, I think. Non-endemic support allows boarders to put more money into what they love doing. These brands allow riders to travel, get proper physio, feed themselves, save for the future, etc.. They also put money into the sport, giving snowboarding events the means to be broadcast around the globe, gaining exposure for snowboarding and bringing in money. This money can then be put back into the endemic industry through brands, resorts, and media outlets, benefiting everyone.
However, it is also possible to see how this could change snowboarding in a negative way. As Rencz said, “if you look at the contest riders with really weird sponsors, you’re like, ‘OoOoOo, that guys got an agent for sure,’ because [the rider] is not finding those sponsors, and the [sponsors] aren't hitting them up. You know? It’s like specifically sought out through an agency...” So the “snowboarder” doesn’t have any sponsors from a snowboard company. And while that’s more common place within mainstream professional sport, it’s a weird phenomenon in life-style snowboarding, which maybe shouldn’t happening. But why does it? Well, probably because of the money. And if that is the case, what does that mean? In other words, what does it mean when riders start having more non-endemic sponsors than endemic sponsors? Does it mean that non-endemic brands could start having more influence over the direction of snowboarding than snowboard companies? Has this already been happening? I honestly don't know the answers to these questions. But, I think questions like this are important to think about. Not thinking about them gets us to the premise for the movie Idiocracy, which is a movie set in the future where brands and big money dictate everything. It’s a future where Gatorade-esque drinks water farmers fields because Gatorade is, quote-unquote, “better than water.”
The Wealth Gap.
As many of the riders interviewed in this article have said, one interesting phenomena of contemporary snowboarding is that the wealth gap is growing. That is, there are a few athletes making a lot of money and many athletes making less. The group of riders making more money are the group of A listers that Jamieson brought up earlier. They are akin to the 1%. And then there's everyone else. A big middle class of boarders who are really good, but only receive a pair of pants and some beanies at the start of the year. This growing wealth gap is interesting because it mimics our current economy, but maybe it’s not unexpected, considering that the snowboard world is just a microcosm of the world at large. When talking about this with Jamieson, he said, “I don't think action sports are insulated from what is happening in society. I think a lot of people are disappointed. They feel confident in what they are achieving, and it’s more difficult for them to get rewarded for it.” I guess it isn’t a coincidence that the “glory days” of the prosperous professional snowboarder happened when North America was financially stable, with a strong middle class economy. Devun also expressed his amazement for what snowboarders will do for such little money, saying, “I feel like there are kids who are willing to kill themselves on rails for like 30-grand a year. There is no way, back in the day, that people would be willing to risk their neck for that.”
Being a Professional Snowboarder
There is no doubt that being a professional snowboarder has changed in the last 10 years, especially within contest riding. The amount of pressure and obligation has increased, everyone in this article agreed with that, to some degree. Devun did say that “before you had to kill yourself all year to make [a] video part and now it just kinda comes out when they feel like it . . . apart from some of the videos.” But other than that, everyone agreed that being a pro is difficult. Seb said, “[what I would say] has really changed is snowboarding became so much harder to make it at a pro level, if you're getting drunk all the time and not really taking care of your body, it is definitely harder to keep up.” Darcy acknowledged that there are so many good snowboarders on Instagram that you need to stay on top of your game, whereas before, if you were a part of the chosen few, everyone waited for your part, and whoever else was good was rarely seen.
In the past, the lack of accessibility also allowed for us to know who was pro and who wasn’t. We knew pros had promodels, whether it was a piece of outerwear or a board. That just doesn't seem to happen as much. The lines are blurred because the money is limited and the talent pool is limitless. Even companies don't really seem too concerned about the pro label. If you go to Rome’s website, LNP is still listed as one of their pros. But he barely snowboards anymore and has a full time career as a heavy-duty mechanic.
While interviewing Seb, this was one of the reasons he thinks there is less money in the industry. He said, “for snowboarding you don't always know who is a pro and who is an amateur, which is something huge and something we need to change. . . When it is built properly, it’s easier for a big company to invest in the sport.” He went on to explain that if you want to be a certain type of rider, there should be a clear way to achieve that.
His points are good, they absolutely make sense as far as growth and money goes. I mean, making it clear to people how snowboarding works is great for sponsors. It allows sponsors outside of snowboarding to know who they are getting behind. It can provide an objective value for a snowboarder. But what about for guys like Jake who aren't into that structure? When talking about structure, Jake said that it’s one of the reasons he does not have an agent. He said that, “I just always wanted to have control over what I did. I’ve always wanted to be very involved with all the projects I’ve worked on. . . “I don’t ‘yes man’ things, and do random stuff that I don’t really believe in.” With more structure, you can lose diversity, you can lose guys like Jake, making pro status only attainable to a certain type of person, which is an issue snowboarding is already dealing with, considering how it is generally dominated by wealthy, white males. So, it’s hard. Snowboarding sponsorship is a unique and ever evolving place that can be difficult for professionals, AMs, industry folk, and everyone to exist within, happily. It’s a complex matrix with many parts, understanding it is hard. I tried to show you a little of the objective and the subject side of it, but when it comes down to it, there is no right information or algorithm when trying to understand it, and maybe there shouldn't be.

Fortnite how to check ping
Exactly where To Obtain five Lost Spraycans In 'Fortnite
Fortnite refers to a videogame series, set in a post-apocalyptic, zombie-infested planet. Fortnite does provide cross-platform play involving most platforms, which you can opt-in to in the game's settings menu. 1 notable exception has been the PS4 version of Fortnite, which hasn't played good with the Xbox One and Switch versions of the game due to the fact it launched. But Sony is ultimately operating to alter that following months of fan backlash.
On this web page we explain how to get much more V-Bucks for no cost in Fortnite: Battle Royale, with a breakdown of how to earn V-Bucks from daily log-ins and quests. That is a fairly generous present when you take into account that 1,000 V-Bucks would generally cost you $9.99 — or $12.99 if you purchase them through the App Retailer. And Epic does not give away absolutely free V-Bucks quite frequently.
Fortnite Battle Royale is a 100-player game in which you play solo or as teams, and parachute onto an island to fight other players till only one particular of you is left standing. To make it tougher, the area in which you play is shrinking and you should remain in that location to survive, setting traps, scavenging weapons and building defenses. As the map shrinks, it pushes players collectively as time goes on, forcing confrontation.
The Battle Royale mode of Fortnite is no cost to download and play on Xbox One particular, PS4, Computer and iOS devices like the Apple iPhone and iPad. It options a single mode and one map, and has more than three.4 million concurrent players and 125 million total. That is the version of Fortnite that everyone is playing and talking about. You really should get involved.
I never want to re-evaluation the game in a paragraph , but it is a cooperative, PvE version of Fortnite that has a lot of unnecessary collecting and grinding systems that make it a bit as well repetitive and fundamental to be enjoyable in the long term. But it's not horrible. It just feels muddled in basic, and I am not certain if there is a good way to save it in the lengthy term. Epic Games has no plans to bring this mode to the Switch, in case you're curious.
youtube
Equally, if you do spend the funds on a Battle pass - bear with us - you can earn cost-free V-Bucks as you fight your way by means of the game's progression program. Whilst they may possibly not technically be no cost, if you progress far adequate in a season, you could properly have hoovered up sufficient of the premium currency to get the future season's pass absolutely free, and then some. That's supplied you don't blow it all on a tasty legendary prior to the present season ends.
Tumblr media
Luckily for you, compared to most of the modern day AAA games that are released such as Far Cry five and Assassins Creed: Odyssey , Fortnite does not demand a supercomputer to run. This is partly down to the graphical choice that the developers chose while designing the game. The cartoonish graphics and player models lower the require for a prime-of-the-range graphics card and CPU. And then there is the potent, scalable Unreal Engine. To run this game, you are going to need at least a 64-bit Windows 7 operating method on your pc. Furthermore, your rig will want to have an Intel Core i3 processor with four GB of Memory to preserve the game ticking. Fortunately, the vidoe card minimum requirement only calls for an Intel HD 4000 or greater to hold up with the game's graphics.
Purchasing cosmetic upgrades in a totally free-to-play video game such as Fortnite is akin to donating to the developer. You get a modest reward that aids your character stand out even though investing in the longevity and profitability of the game itself. It is also 100% optional and can get genuinely pricey if you get hooked on upgrading your character on a standard basis.
The quirky art style also permits Epic to incorporate bizarre weapons, tyres that bounce players metres in the air and the game's well-known rapid-paced constructing mechanic (skilled players can knock up a nigh-impenetrable fortress in seconds) without the need of compromising the aesthetic. PUBG's extra realistic, "significant" approach to battle royale combat limits its developers' scope, when Epic has cost-free rein to add all sorts of craziness to Fortnite.
Fortnite's brief-lived exclusivity on Samsung devices has come to an end. Soon after a handful of days of becoming restricted to pick Galaxy-branded gadgets, Epic's now expanded its Fortnite Android Beta to a heap of other phones and tablets. Battle royale games have been dominated by Fortnite , even after the release of Get in touch with of Duty's personal interpretation of the formula with Blackout. Now it really is time for EA and Respawn to take a crack at it with the Titanfall developer's newly released Apex Legends.
Not got Save the Globe? Don't be concerned. Fortnite Battle Royale mode also offers a way of earning free of charge V-Bucks: through battle pass challenges. Austen, Golsin (March 27, 2018). "Fortnite Battle Royale Overview" IGN Archived from the original on August 18, 2018. Retrieved August 21, 2018. Don't fall for any of the Totally free V-Bucks” scams that you may possibly come across that tries to provide you free of charge V-bucks. The strategies above (that is written) are all and the only legit procedures that basically perform and there is no other approach out there that works to earn totally free V-Bucks.
You can also pull a selection of dance moves through the game, and some of these have taken on a cult appeal in schoolyards about the globe. The Floss, inspired by the viral video of the boy dancing with Katy Perry during her Saturday Night Live look last spring , is fundamentally the new dab All of this indicates the game is seriously entertaining to watch as effectively as play, so quite a few of the streamers and YouTubers who play the game - such as Ninja, Tfue and Loeya - have develop into massive stars. They're broadcasting quite a few hours of themselves playing the game to their millions of fans, making Fortnite the most watched game http://jktpro.com on big streaming service Twitch.

Why Procurement Matters
By Megan Schrader
Managing a company is an incredible feat. If you are currently in the process of establishing or managing a business, you will certainly have come to realize complexity of maintaining this dynamic, imposing organism. It demands your flexibility and focus, as well as a good part of your day. In an ideal world, you would be able to analyze every facet of this business from the ground up. But this is not always an ideal world. You must take great care to determine your priorities throughout the course of your career. What is the best use of your limited time? Where do you focus your attention?
Perhaps you have already given some thought to your procurement process. Perhaps you have not. Perhaps you have considered dedicating more time to managing procurement, but are unsure if the benefits will ultimately outweigh the costs. Is it worthwhile to invest your time and resources into an assessment of your business’s procurement policies?
 What is procurement?
For anyone who might be unfamiliar, procurement is the process of attaining goods and services. In regards to business management, procurement is the method in which a company receives the goods it requires to run. This process is about more than the purchasing of goods—procurement is a long-term plan that a business uses to attain the resources it requires in a sustainable and affordable way. Purchasing goods is an immediate, unconsidered action; procuring goods is a continuous, planned out strategy.
Because procurement is expected to be an ongoing process, an agreement (i.e. a contract) with a third party that defines the terms of the exchange is often designed. This contract is the epitome of what differentiates procurement from purchasing, as its creation demonstrates both parties concern for the minute details of the exchange both in the present and in the future. The contract can detail the logistics of the exchange, such its size, cost, and regularity, but should also serve as a protection for those involved. The contract should be worded such that company liability is mitigated as much as possible. Additionally, it should offer protection in the case that one party faces hardships, such as bankruptcy or foreclosure.
If a business invests the time into streamlining their procurement system, they may be able to reach more favorable agreements with these third parties, resulting in improved profitability, ethicality, and product/service reliability. Alternatively, if a business has chosen to not make this investment, the opposite is also true. Overpaying for low quality resources will leave a company in the red. It will be limited in the number and reliability of its goods, to the point that customers and employees alike take notice. A third parties declaration of bankruptcy could leave the business in a tumultuous state. A poor procurement plan can become the difference between a business’s success or failure.
So yes, it probably is worthwhile to consider procurement in your place of work.
How do you improve your process?
As with most things, before you can plan for the future, you must know where you currently stand. Compile your most recent procurement data. Are you satisfied with where most of your spending is going and with the quality of the products/services you are getting in return? If you think you may be overspending on a specific resource, a supplier has proven to be less than reliable, or if you are altogether unsure of what to think, then it is time to conduct some research.
There are a number of avenues that you can rely upon as you research. For starters, you can ask friends and colleagues for recommendations; perhaps someone can offer the name of a third party that they’ve had great experiences with in the past, or maybe they will have suggestions for suppliers to avoid. You can also turn to the internet to learn about potential third-party suppliers, though you should remain discerning in regards to the sources you trust. Contacting promising third parties directly once you’ve narrowed your list can give you a better understanding of specific services this partner could offer your business, further contributing to your ultimate decision.
Improving procurement is not an easy process, and it can take a fair bit of time to consider how different suppliers would ultimately impact your business. Fortunately, there are professional consultants that you can turn to if you wish to restructure your procurement strategies. These professionals have first-hand experience in streamlining procurement, and will be able to address your businesses most concerning areas. They can offer a new, oftentimes innovative perspective on how your company manages procurement and spending, and can provide improved solutions utilizing spending and performance analysis tools and an extensive network of third parties already in place. Best of all, enlisting outside help means that you can continue to manage other areas of your business throughout this revision process.
How can procurement add value to your business?
Did you know that up to 70% of business spending is dedicated to procurement costs? The chances are that procurement takes up the largest portion of your budget. Therefore, streamlining this process, even just a little, can result in major reductions in your business spending. For example:
Imagine you run a company that produces bottled water. While considering your procurement process, you find that you are spending more than you would like on plastic. After some research, you find a new plastics supplier that will save you, on average, about 5 cents per water bottle. While 5 cents is not a large sum in itself, how will that savings look over time?
Tumblr media
Now imagine that you have also found suppliers that will provide paper for 5 cents less per label and printing for 2 cents less per label. Again, these are small saving by themselves, but as you can see, they have quite the drastic impact on our chart.
Tumblr media
Over time, the most finite changes to your procurement plan will grow to be significant savings for your business.
But the value of managing procurement extends beyond lower manufacturing costs. Perhaps you will chose to invest that money once spent on procurement into sales. Increased marketing could spread awareness of your business. Increased staff size or training could lead to more sales. The ability to produce/provide more goods for the same price could allow your company to offer more to each consumer, or to reach a larger number of consumers at a time.  And if new procurement methods are increasingly more ethical and reliable, consumers are more likely to want to use your product/receive your service. This approach will in turn increase the profitability and longevity of your business.
Alternatively, the money saved on procurement systems could also be invested into innovative research. Your budget could now accommodate experimentation with new services or product designs. New employees will bring with them unique ideas and experiences, each contributing new potential avenues for the future of your company. Improving employee morale through additional benefits and new office resources will lead to a flurry of innovation.
How important is procurement for SMEs?
Procurement is an important aspect of any businesses success, regardless of the company size. In the midst of the countless investments that an SME must make throughout its establishment and management, it is easy to simply lose track of spending. Human beings are prone to estimation errors, and all the more so when stress and money are involved. A procurement plan, with its focus on long-term structure, challenges you to account for your spending over time, helping you to manage your budget moving forward.
Again, procurement is a time investment. Many business owners won’t have the time to focus on their procurement plan as regularly as they should, and may be skeptical to hire an employee to specialize in procurement. If you manage an SME and have no one on your team to attend to procurement—please reconsider. Try to rearrange the roles of current employees, hire a new staff member, or research local consultancy firms that can manage the process of procurement and logistics. One of the most common reasons that an SME fails is that cash flow is poorly managed. Don’t become a statistic.
 When does procurement end?
Procurement ends once you have attained the resources you need. However, the process of assessing and improving your procurement plan should never be complete. If you are at the point that your company is sustainable, and you are satisfied with the work your business is doing, then congratulations! You should be! Once again, managing a company is no easy task, and getting your company where you want it to be is an achievement worth celebrating. You might choose to step back from your procurement plan for a while, and that is okay.
Just don’t step back forever. Globalization and technological advancement leave the world in a state of constant flux, as I am confident you already know. Consumers change, too, and changing values could pose an additional threat to your business. Make sure to revisit this process of procurement from time to time, and check that your system is up to date with new regulations and standards. Allow your processes to adapt with the world.
 What is procurement, revisited
Procurement is the process of attaining goods and services. It is one of the foundations of a business, and is likely the largest regular expenditure your company will face. Taking the time to reassess your procurement plan has the potential to improve every facet of your business, and can help establish your company as a permanent fixture of the market. Well thought out procurement strategies promote efficiency, ethicality, and reliability in your company; but this can only endure if they are open to adaptation and evolution as the state of the world continues to change.
You only have so much time in the day. Be sure to dedicate at least some of that time to your procurement plan.

For Honor - Review
Competitive multiplayer isn't usually my thing. When For Honor was initially announced, I couldn't have been more disinterested. Despite the enthusiastic presence of Jason VandenBerghe on stage, For Honor seemed like a terminally dumb and dull idea for a videogame. Vikings versus knights versus samurai is such a childish, macho premise that it couldn't help but turn me away.
Yet in the intervening time between then and now, my interest was piqued. I'd spent more time with Dark Souls you see, especially the third game and had found myself now engaged with the online component. The competitive side had initially been off-putting, a wrinkle in an otherwise stellar game but over time, through exposure I became enthralled. I got good at it. I sought out foes, for tense duels and long drawn out skirmishes.
So with a competitive side mustered in me, For Honor began to look different. I began to see the nuance in its combat, in its design. Those tense duels, encompassing dexterity and cunning, that had been the source of much joy for me in Dark Souls looked awfully familiar in my glimpses of For Honor.
Did it live up to my expectations? Most certainly. For Honor is exactly what's been marketed. A multiplayer focused medieval melee basher. You pick a faction for the over-arching meta game, with victories and losses contributing to their position on the map. Though no matter what faction you choose, the game allows you to pick any class. With your chosen hero you can enter a few games modes though the main ones are Dominion, a control the points affair and the duels, both 1v1 and 2v2 brawls.
And that's it pretty much. There's oodles of customisation, which is nice provided you're into tinkering with every inch of costume rather than the person underneath. Unlocks that offer minor tweaks to stats. But that's it, emphasis placed squarely on what For Honor does most and best; combat.
Boy does For Honor do combat well. The underlying system is deceptively simple. A rock, papers, scissors design in which you lock onto an opponent and are then choosing between three directional stances, determining from where you attack and from where you can block. There are numerous nuances to how this works in practice and complications are made by the draining of stamina, of combos and trick moves.
Having that simple foundation however, gives For Honor's combat a clarity that makes it approachable and easy to follow even in the heat of the moment. It's telling that even as you improve, fundamentally, everything boils down to those stances. Great players are patient and seem almost inactive, favouring single attacks and saving their flurry of combos for just the right moment. Those who aim to button mash will find themselves swiftly defeated.
The presentation deserves praise here because whilst the visuals are pleasing, it's the animation that gives heft to every swing and also communicates important information. You can spot feints, the winding up before an attack. Keeping this information clear and consistent across twelve different characters, each with their own movesets and styles, is no small feat and the game couldn't possibly work as well as it does without such stellar end result.
Of the modes, Dominion puts you in a team with the objective of capturing points. It's not a novel mode by any stretch but it doesn't have to be, the combat remains the draw and For Honor does little to get in the way. There are environmental hazards, traps and ledges with players also able to perform drop attacks for an instant kill but these simply spice things up. Solid level design ensures that with open ground and tight funnels, it always places you in spaces that each require a different approach, with your class determining where exactly you want to be.
Here For Honor is a chaotic frenzy but exhilarating. Mad feats occur, with you impossibly holding off the entire enemy team whilst you await your teammates to respawn or rescuing a friend by booting an enemy off a ledge from behind. Really this mode will be best enjoyed with a group of friends, the moments produced in the chaos always better shared. There's plenty of appeal here but for some it might be too much mayhem.
As such For Honor is really at its best when its one on one and the duel mode is precisely that. Best of three out of five rounds, nothing but you and your opponent. A variety of maps come with their unique hazards but overall, this boils down to simply how much you've mastered the game. It's as thrilling as any competitive game can hope to be, relying on what's going on in the minds of the players as much as what's happening on screen. Second guessing each strike, trying to divine your enemy's approach whilst concealing yours.
In competitive videogames, with the most popular examples being shooters like Call of Duty, Ubisoft investing in something that's grounded in a slow pace, with little room for twitchy trigger finger, is a surprise. There's little concession made here, save for a robust practice suite. For Honor is unashamedly what it is, through and through.
And what if you're not competitive, is For Honor worth buying for the single player or co-operative options? Not really. Whilst the single player campaign is better than it has any right to be, its best moments offering unique set pieces and some tough bosses, it's not nearly robust enough to justify a purchase in its own right. You can play against bots with friends or strangers if you'd prefer, there's no need to take on other players but without the element of human surprise, I doubt For Honor would offer much longevity.
No, For Honor is what it has been marketed as. A competitive multiplayer game that sits somewhere between Dark Souls, Dynasty Warriors and Nidhogg. If there any complaints in that regard, it's the inconsistency of the matchmaking. Mostly it works as intended but those niggles do crop up, interruptions mid match or overly long periods stuck in a lobby, waiting for players despite the bustling population. Not a deal breaker but an unwelcome issue regardless.
The most pleasant surprise is the tone of the thing. For all the premise sounds like nothing more than an energy drink fueled teenage boy's fantasy, it is instead a bit more reserved. There's no gloating over mauled enemies or reveling in gory feats and in fact the main villain is vilified precisely because of their lust for violence. It isn't deep or insightful at all but neither is it the indulgent, sickeningly violent bluster it could so easily have been.
The single player has a pleasingly gender diverse cast too, with players even able to choose the main hero's gender in each campaign. Whilst certain classes in the multiplayer are locked into being male, so too are others locked into being female, with no chain mail bikinis or other nonsense to separate them. It's a daft idea, these historically disparate factions fighting it out but it's delivered with sincerity, aiming to be as welcoming and respectful as possible.
Another huge surprise is finding a fair number of players are not only friendly but also helpful. Several times I've had apologies for being kicked off a ledge, players genuinely ashamed to defeat you in a “cheap” fashion. I've had players offer me advice and I've seen competitors helping train each other. One struggling player confessed to me he could not figure out how to beat my class so I spent a few matches, offering him advice and practice till he could at last defeat me.
It's not always like this, there's plenty of the usual online toxicity to go about but there is also an atmosphere of good sportsmanship, an interest in winning fairly or not at all. The pursuit of mastery is to be shared. I've no idea quite what has facilitated this spirit in the multiplayer but I am grateful to find it.
If you want something to sink your teeth into, to master and compete in, then For Honor is a multiplayer game like scarce few others. It's a niche I enjoy immensely but in spite of For Honor's best efforts, it's not going to be for everyone.
But if you've been put off by the seemingly macho posturing of the premise or the imagined, lethally competitive community, you might be surprised as I was to find that's not really the case here. It won't be welcoming in every match but there is room for newcomers, more than might be expected of such a game.
As For Honor's community evolves, I just hope that space for new players is not abandoned as the pro's take flight. If Ubisoft can also introduce some more complex modes that enhance the core combat, then it could become a very special game indeed.
For Honor is something I'll keep coming back to for those duels. Eager to learn a little more each time, improve by just a little bit. For me.

Having publicly contemplated retirement in the past, University of Hawaii women’s volleyball head coach made it official Monday.
After 42 seasons at Manoa, Dave Shoji is retiring.
Shoji concludes his legendary coaching career with 1,202 wins — second-most in NCAA Division I history — and four national championships.
“It’s been a hard week, because obviously, after 42 years, there’s a lot of emotions when you step away from something like this, something we love, we cherish. It’s been a tough week, but like I said, we’re in a good place. We feel really good about the decision,” Shoji said at the press conference, accompanied by his wife, Mary. “I thought this was the right time. We’d been talking about retirment, and with the pool of applicants that David (Matlin, UH athletics director) was sharing with me, I felt really good that we’d have a good coach in place, so it all kind of came together in the last few days. I understand the timing is a little strange, but I think everything is good now. I think the timing is perfect.
“It was very difficult, because I love the sport. I love the game. I love my job,” Shoji continued, “God was just pulling me toward retirement. It was difficult, but I just kept getting pulled toward retirement. There was something telling me to do that. It’s been probably since December that you think about it everyday, so day by day, it evolved into let’s do this.”
Back in December, Shoji revealed he was battling prostate cancer and had to take some time away from the program to undergo treatment.
As for his health at this point, Shoji said Monday, “I feel fine. Yeah, I have no problems right now, just going through some treatment, but I feel great. I’ve got great doctors and God willing, I’ll be fine.”
“When he actually made his final decision, I think I felt a sense of relief, because I know it’s been pulling at his heart for quite some time,” Mary Shoji said. “When the whole health issues came about, I think perspectives change in a hurry. I think it really makes you step back and take a look at life in the big picture and what’s really important. I think for Dave, it allowed him to do that, because I think he’s been so focused on his job and, at the same time, that tug of being pulled away, I just think it really brought it into focus. I think I felt relieved. I think, as this day has gone on, it’s become very emotional for sure, but that’s to be expected when you’ve invested your life as many years — both of us have, especially him — it’s very difficult for sure, but we’ve got good things in store for us, so I’m counting on that.”
“I don’t think anyone will ever match what Dave has accomplished for our Rainbow Wahine volleyball program in terms of longevity and accomplishments,” Matlin said. “He has dedicated more than half of his life to the program and has touched the lives of hundreds of student-athletes. His legacy will live on through his well-deserved induction into the AVCA Hall of Fame and through all the blood, sweat and tears his teams have battled through on the court at Klum Gym and the Teraflex at the Stan Sheriff Center. Rainbow Wahine Volleyball will always raise a glass to Dave Shoji.”
Ah Mow-Santos to take over as head coach
The university also announced Shoji’s replacement: former assistant coach and Wahine star Robyn Ah Mow-Santos.
Ah Mow-Santos is only the third head coach in program history. She is considered one of the most decorated players in school history, with an impressive resume that includes three Olympic Games appearances, two first-team All-America selections, and is a member of the school’s Sports Circle of Honor and Hawaii Sports Hall of Fame.
During the press conference, Shoji admitted while he supports the choice, he had nothing to do with the decision.
“I was not surprised. It’s just a natural selection. I think it makes a lot of sense. I think David did a lot of due diligence and sought Robyn out. I think it’s a great selection and great choice. He would inform me of people he was talking to. I had no input as to the decision, the final decision,” Shoji said. “The one thing I think that separates her from anybody else is the passion for the game. If you saw her coaching on the sidelines, you know she just loves the game, loves to be involved, loves the players. She’s played for so long. It’s just truly the only thing she looked forward to during the day, beside her family. She just loved being in the gym, loved being with the team. I think the word passion just comes to my mind first of all. It absolutely makes me feel at ease. Obviously, we wanted someone with the right ingredients, and she fits the bill every way you look at it.”
Shoji adds though he may be retiring, he “will be here for her, if she wants me to be involved. I’m here. I’m not moving. I intend to be at all the games. Whatever she needs me, I’ll be there for her.
“I have no regrets,” Shoji added. “We’ve done what we could’ve done. I think looking back, we’ve been successful. The program is at a point where I think Robyn will continue to have it grow. It’s right up there, top 20 every year. I think she’ll continue with the success. I’m very satisfied. I wish we could have won two or three more. Charlie (Wade, former Wahine assistant coach and current Rainbow Warriors volleyball head coach)’s in the back over there. We were in the final game a few times. We could have had one or two or three more, but that’s the way sports are. You don’t always win as many as you want to, but looking back, I think it’s been a great run.”
“We are excited about the return of Robyn Ah Mow-Santos to the University of Hawaii Rainbow Wahine Volleyball program,” Matlin said. “There is no other person I can think of who represents the sport of volleyball, the spirit of Hawaii, and the heart of a champion more than Robyn. She was impressive as a student-athlete, a leader of Team USA in three Olympic Games and is an incredible role model for all young athletes. I know she will be able to get the best out of her student-athletes both in the classroom and on the court.”
Matlin forwarded his recommendation of Ah Mow-Santos to UH Manoa interim chancellor David Lassner, who approved the selection Sunday.
“I am excited and humbled at the same time,” Ah Mow-Santos said. “Replacing Dave Shoji is impossible. I will never forget what he has done for me personally as well as the Hawaii volleyball program. Dave walked me out of the McKinley High School gym and into the Rainbow Wahine program that created a lot of opportunities for me. It’s a privilege for me to be able to give back to the University and the game that has given me so much. I look forward to reuniting with the student-athletes and hope that I can help create lasting impressions and unforgettable experiences for them.”
From 2011-15, Ah Mow-Santos served as assistant coach under Shoji, mentoring former UH setter Mita Uiato, who earned three all-league and all-region honors and honorable mention All-America status. In 2014, she was on the coaching staff of U.S. Junior National Team for the NORCECA Women’s U-20 Continental Championship. She currently coaches club volleyball for the Vegas Aces.
Following her playing career at UH, Ah Mow-Santos went on to compete for the U.S. Women’s National Volleyball Team from 1999 to 2008 and was regarded as one of the top international setters in the world. She was the team’s starting setter in the 2000 and ’04 Olympic Games and in 2008, she helped guide Team USA to a silver-medal finish at the Beijing Olympics. She also played professionally in Italy, Portugal and Switzerland. While playing for Volero Zurich in Switzerland, she earned the Swiss League’s most valuable player award.
At UH, Ah Mow-Santos played for Shoji from 1993-96 and was a two-time AVCA first-team All-America selection (1995 and ’96), and a three-time all-conference performer (1994, ’95 in Big West and 1996 in WAC). The Honolulu native ranks third in the UH record book in career assists (4,313) and fourth in assists per game (11.23), and in her final two seasons at Hawai’i, she guided the team to a 66-4 combined record which included an appearance in the NCAA title match in 1996.
At the conclusion of her playing career, Ah Mow-Santos was a student assistant for two seasons as she continued to pursue her bachelor’s degree.
Ah Mow-Santos prepped at McKinley High School in Honolulu where she was a four-year first-team all-Oahu Interscholastic Association East selection and a three-time first team all-state pick. She is married to Niobel Rafael Santos and they have three children.
The exact start date for Ah Mow-Santos has not been determined. “She needs some time to honor previous commitments she has made before she can jump on a plane,” Matlin said.

Establishing a Home Kitchen Makeover Finances - Adding Worth to Your Property Value
Establishing a Home Kitchen Makeover Finances - Adding Worth to Your Property Value
It is very necessary to establish a finances for any residence remodeling job, and also kitchen space renovation in miami is no exemption.
A word of caution: I spent several hours investigating custom-made kitchen area renovating price and budgeting on the net to gather records for this short article. I operated in to a couple sites that offered square footage pricing for kitchen area makeover. I commiserate with their attempt to discover a simple procedure to figure out cabinets renovating pricing, this type of recommendations is not based in reality. Kitchen Remodeling Miami Beach
Like anything else in this world a cooking area remodel is mosting likely to set you back more than you believed it would as well as the heavens is actually the restriction about what it may set you back depending upon your flavors. There are multiple elements that enter into determining a renovating spending plan.
There are many spots on the internet you may visit aid you establish a general budget number to start along with. My personal recommendation is Remodeling Magazine's Cost vs. Value Report which is actually discharged by region and also primary area yearly. The really pleasant feature of this file is actually that it provides an explanation of the "average" venture so that you can gauge if your home kitchen remodel is actually heading to drop above or below the measure. I additionally locate their average rates to be a precise representation of the rates for our business, thus by suggesting to customers just before I even meet them that they investigate this document they are more probably to set up a reasonable budget plan our team may operate within to give all of them a superb kitchen space.
Custom-made Hutch developed with Semi-Custom Cabinets
While Remodeling Magazine's record is incredibly valuable, it is actually still an incredibly one size matches all strategy to setting up a spending plan. Always keep checking out if you will like to try to hone your varieties a little bit.
Venture out a pad and also newspaper as well as take down a handful of notes concerning each variable as you experience this list:
Factor 1 Home Value- Consider not just what you think your property costs, however likewise the market value of identical residences in your community that presently have updates. My preferred web site to check property worths is actually zillow.com, merely enter your handle and you receive an active map with residence worths and other info listed straight on the chart. Remember of which houses are actually of similar dimension to yours, have actually been purchased even more recently, however have a greater value, after that peek in their home windows to observe what your home looks like. Ok, truly, I was actually only kidding. , if you don't understand them probably it is actually opportunity to satisfy the next-door neighbors and inquire for a simple excursion.
 .
Factor 2 Wow! - This has every thing to perform with your goals and inspirations. Make a note of each inspirational variable which is necessary to you in a kitchen area remodel. Right here are actually some possible examples: Kitchen is falling apart. You really love to prepare and the layout does not fit you. You love to prefer and captivate to open up the kitchen space as an area to collect. You really want a home kitchen that impresses your guests. You are actually preparing yourself to offer your residence and also the kitchen is a sticking factor with customers ... Now that you possess your checklist, assess which inspirations are most significant as well as relist all of them in inspirational purchase. Picturing your spending plan starting in "the center" remember of which aspects may relocate the budget up or down ... i.e. intending to upgrade to promote a purchase might move the finances down, redesigning to wow guest may max it out ... etc
. Aspect 3 Did an individual say AGA? - List any "has to haves" for a home kitchen remodel to be worth it to you. Possible instances: granite counters, an island with an extra sink, a 2nd dishwashing machine, a business premium fuel assortment, etc
. Variable 4 Longevity- Determine to the greatest of your capacity the size of your time you intend on possessing the home.
Element 5 Size Matters- Determine what amount of your residence your kitchen area involves. A tasting of over 100 present day residence floorplans of 1000 to 3000 square foot homes disclosed the typical home kitchen square footage to become 7% of the property's straight video footage. , if your kitchen is much larger or even smaller than this average you may require to raise or even reduce your finances as needed.
 .
Factor 6 Layout- if you already recognize you're mosting likely to prefer the sink relocated, an island sink added, an indoor wall surface relocated and also an outdoor door added, at that point you need to include money to your budget plan well beyond what an essential renovation would set you back.
Difficult format: the decorative column hides an audio covered drain pipeline
Element 7 Funding- Determine the maximum amount of money you could manage to spend. If you are funding your venture you can calculate what a lending institution will likely offer you. Lenders intend to see a debt to revenue proportion( DTI) of.36 or a lot less. Your DTI is set up through taking all your monthly financial debt responsibilities (debt card repayments, vehicle fundings, home mortgage, and so on) and splitting through your month-to-month revenue. To determine your maximum secure monthly financial debt multiply.36 opportunities your monthly income. Now deduct your existing monthly financial debt from this amount and you have a month to month spending plan optimum. Listed below is actually a link to a calculator that will carry out the arithmetic for you: home loan personal digital assistant
 Putting everything Together
For a cooking area remodel of any sort of element that features new floor, appliances, closets, sink/faucet, lighting and also carrying power up to code I discover everything a lot less than 15% to be actually a really uncertain number. I intend on a thousand dollar home 10% will be a convenient finances, but on a 200k house a 20k finances is actually limited at best for a total blown kitchen space remodel.
, if reselling worth is actually essential to you it is smart to keept the cost of your cooking area remodelling task within 20% of the existing worth of your house.. Keeping within this variety guarantees that a large number of the brand new kitchen space's cost is actually made back in increased residence worth right away, as well as the staying expense must be recovered within 5 years as your residence values.
Ok, permitted's run through an instance. Consider, there is no specific formula listed below. Our team are actually simply performing our ideal to be as informed as achievable as well as create a prudent choice concerning the amount of to invest in our kitchen area remodel.
For our instance let's use my house. It's a fifty's cape cod along with a reasonable square video of 1500.
Element 1 worth: Zillow offers me a predicted worth of $167,500, having said that, I notice zillow hasn't however improved and also accounted for the singular loved ones homes which were lately developed in the area behind us with a starting rate of $270k. I'm going to base my spending plan on a cost of 180k which is actually comparable to other residences in the community that are actually the exact same dimension.
Element 2 Goals: My other half as well as I like to accommodate attendees. To make a kitchen area remodel beneficial for us our team need to shed an internal wall structure to open up the kitchen space and eating nook to the sitting room. I'm going to add 1% to budget this.
Element 3 Must Haves: As a previous chef 2 should riches for me are actually a brand new stove and an actually great propane assortment( no organic fuel service here), preferably an office variety modified for house usage (true business ranges don't possess protection around the stove, important for residence safety). I am actually mosting likely to include another 1% to my spending plan to make sure there is sufficient funds to get me my selection and lp installation.
Aspect 4 Longevity: Our experts plan to remain in our property a lowest of 4 years. Usually of finger it takes 5 years for the majority of upgrading to value and redeem each of its expense. Given that our company are going to likely be listed here at the very least 5 years I'm not heading to punish the budget plan, yet since there is actually an excellent opportunity our company'll move right around 5 years I'm not visiting boost it like I would if our company were remaining a lot longer.
Aspect 5 Size of Kitchen: Our cooking area is actually about 140SquareFeet( SF). Undoubtedly this kitchen is going to require some added material as well as cupboards.
Element 6 Layout: Our team are going to transform the layout of our kitchen pretty thoroughly. I'm going to include one more 1% to my budget, once again wishing $1800 (1% of our 180k value) is actually enough to cover the power as well as plumbing system modifications.
For my foundation I am actually heading to utilize twenty%. As I pointed out in the past, there are actually going to be people that will assert with me on that particular, however going lower typically does not leave you along with practical finances varieties for complete wasted home kitchen remodels. I am actually incorporating 4% based on my elements provided above. I readjusted my zillow.com determined residence market value to 180k located on the equivalent square video and also worth of various other properties around me. This provides me a working budget plan of 24% x 180k= $43,200 When I review this to the Cost Vs. Value file I observe that in between Atlantic Region a Major Kitchen Renovation is actually $59, 098. It seems like my spending plan can be bit low, specifically due to the fact that I truly would such as granite counter tops and also the Cost Vs. Value specifications ask for laminate bests. Meanwhile my kitchen space is substantially much smaller than their 200SF criteria, so I believe I'll choose my budget plan variety and also view what my service provider can carry out for me during that finances.
Given that the kitchen is a high website traffic region on a routine manner, creating a functional style is actually essential when intending your kitchen area upgrading ideas. When developing your home kitchen redesigning concepts you should presume regarding the on call room you possess as well as then acquire innovative.
Making Use Of Kitchen Remodeling Software
A lot of the kitchen area redesign software program is extremely uncomplicated; the measures are actually as quick and easy as 1-2-3 or even A-B-C. A regular or even standard kitchen remodeling, if designed in the previous years need to have the "cuneate" fundamentals, wherein the refrigerator, oven, and sink get on triangle slants along with a large space in the kitchen center, to ensure that it would certainly be actually less complicated for the mommy or the lady of the house to relocate around.

Whether you've acquired a large spending plan or a little one for your kitchen remodeling job, it is actually smart to attempt to create certain your costs does not spiral out of hand as the method proceeds.

Top 10+ CRE Blogs in 2018
So much hard work goes into these blogs all year and we appreciate it so very much, we cannot miss giving our authors this annual recognition, even if it is March of 2019. This is our 6th year too, so half a dozen is a proud number! I still cannot believe we have been recognizing our bloggers for 6 years!
There is Insight Here
This process is also very eye opening to see what blogs do the best and have the most views! This year we had 3 authors who had the most popular topics and ClientLook dominated as far as volume! Wow, they sure know how to get our attention. A big congratulations to the ClientLook team for knocking it out of the park!
Please make note of these types of blogs as they are of extreme interest to our audience. Another point to consider is who are the best promoters! Many of our authors are also fabulous marketers. They are promoting the blog or setting it up on RSS and using Hootsuite or other tools to insure maximum eyeballs! Smart!
The Real Thing!
The top blog of all, year after year, which is a blog that is several years old by Mark Chase is “The One Page Business Plan for Commercial Real Estate Agents!” We love you for this one Mark, it is a true commercial real estate blog classic and an excellent example of ‘evergreen content’. Hats off to you Mark, again! This blog just cannot be beat. Not by a mile. I am so eager to see who the next Mark Chase will be that can write a blog so important that it is still remains at the top of our stats after years of posting. For now, he cannot be beat!
Wanna Be Like Mark
Following in Mark’s pattern of domination, are Andrew Bermudez of Digsy.AI (2) and James Milner of Appalachian CRE (1)
Both of these guys had impressive and popular blogs as well. Theses blogs were top performers month after month. These are considered evergreen blogs in the sense that people want to read them even long after they are published. They are not necessarily time sensitive, although Andrew’s blog on CRM systems was from 2017, it is still popular and was throughout 2018! Sounds like we need a new CRM blog Andrew! (hint hint) Andrew’s other blog is a no-brainer topic everybody wants to know: Best Time to Send Emails!  James’ blog is a fabulous topic on the segment of real estate called Resimercial, that obviously got attention as he knocked it out of the park! Keep up the good work James. You are rocking and rolling!

Why Residential Brokers shouldn’t be involved in Commercial Real Estate transactions
How We Do It
Each month we go through the data and identify the blogs that had the most pageviews as well as shares on social media. It is a combination of analysis. This is so telling when looking at blogs that got many shares, but not as many pageviews! Moral of the story: Titles matter too! So each month, these are the top 4 blogs of 2018 overall, even though Mark’s blog is many years old! Actually one of the most popular last year was the first blog listed in January when we announced the top blogs! Of course, it is expected as it is a digest of the best and we promote the heck out of it. Now that is a clue to you in crafting your content as well. People like digests and “best of” blogs and gobble them up! So without further ado, here is our play by play for each month in 2018 and an overview of who had the top blogs and how many they had next to their names and our awesome list of special category blog awards!

International Franchise Association Foundation Announces Grand Prize Winners of 2019 NextGen in Franchising Global Competition
Of hundreds of applicants from around the world, top four millennial entrepreneurs receive investment to grow their businesses
Washington, DC  (RestaurantNews.com)  The International Franchise Association’s (IFA) Foundation announced today the grand prize winners of its 2019 NextGen in Franchising Global Competition — established by founding sponsor David McKinnon, CFE — which was held at IFA’s 59th Annual Convention in Las Vegas, Nevada. The four millennial entrepreneurs, who hailed from the United States, Philippines, Australia, and Kenya, were selected from a group of 12 winners of the Global Competition, a worldwide program that engages millennial entrepreneurs seeking to grow their businesses through the franchise business model, and the only start-up business accelerator in the world focused on franchising.
Former Fortune 50 CEO and 2016 Presidential Candidate Carly Fiorina led a panel of judges for the final round of the Global Competition — which was sponsored by the Frederick A. DeLuca Foundation and Subway International — on Wednesday, Feb. 27, when each participant pitched their business concept to Fiorina and a panel of industry experts, as part of a convention with nearly 4,000 attendees, for the chance to win an investment of $5,000 – $10,000 to help grow their business. In addition to Carly, judges included Suzanne DeLuca Greco, board member of the Frederick A. DeLuca Foundation, and Shelly Sun, CFE, CEO and Founder of Brightstar Franchising LLC.
“I have counseled numerous entrepreneurs and business leaders throughout my career and can honestly say the 2019 NextGen in Franchising Global Competition winners are an incredibly talented group with bright futures ahead of them,” said Carly. “It was an honor to share my experiences and advice on how to persevere as a leader as they move their businesses forward, continue to expand, and inspire the lives of many throughout their journey.”
This year, Jeremy Hassell, founder of City Cave, took home first place, which included a $10,000 cash prize. Princess Diana Rosario, founder of What’s Your FLAN?, and Brooke Gagliano, founder of Frutta Bowls each received $5,000. The judges also awarded a $5,000 prize to Venuste Kubwimana, founder of A Water Kiosk at School, a social enterprise franchise.
“We are extremely excited to be announced as the 2019 NextGen winners amongst some of the worlds greatest talent. It’s unbelievable to think our franchise from little old Brisbane in Australia has taken the big prize,” said Hassell. “Our biggest win here is the friends, mentors and networks we have been exposed to and can not wait to implement all we’ve learned into our franchise model. We look forward to returning to the conference next year and couldn’t be more thankful to the IFA Foundation for this incredible opportunity.”
Since the program’s inception in 2015, over 2,500 millennial entrepreneurs from more than 75 countries have applied. Many NextGen winners have been featured in top business publications such as The New York Times, The Wall Street Journal, Inc., and Fast Company, among others.
“What I love about the NextGen in Franchising Global Competition is that, each year, our winners truly represent the future of our industry. They have embraced franchising and are passionate about empowering others to go into business for themselves, but not by themselves,” said David McKinnon, CFE, founding sponsor of the NextGen in Franchising program. “These are some of the brightest young entrepreneurs I’ve had the pleasure of meeting and I am excited to see how they leverage the knowledge gained and connections made over the last few days to grow their businesses.”
The 2019 NextGen in Franchising Winners competing in the final round were:
Brooke Gagliano, Frutta Bowls (United States) – Brooke graduated from Drew University in 2014 majoring in business with a minor in biology and art. After college, Brooke used her passion for athletic education to start her own business training sports teams and clients, which is where she was first introduced to acai. While on a trip out west, Brooke had her first acai bowl and the idea for Frutta Bowls was born. With the support of her friends and family, she opened her first store in May 2016 in Howell, New Jersey, at age 23 with cofounder Chris Ives. The Frutta Bowls dream started as a local idea with two locations. It has since grown into a nationwide concept, continuing to positively affect many lives along the way. Frutta Bowls sets itself apart by not only its commitment to providing healthy and delicious food, but also by its involvement in the communities surrounding each location.
Princess Diana Rosario, What’s Your Flan? (Philippines) – Princess is the founder of What’s Your Flan?, a company founded in 2016 that is the product of her passion for cooking. What’s Your Flan? serves original mouthwatering desserts that are all freshly made, natural, and have no food coloring or preservatives. From humble beginnings and 14 failed businesses, she was shaped to be a better business owner, influencing the launch of her Philippines-based business designed to help fellow entrepreneurs have the opportunity to become their own boss. After two hardworking years of business, What’s Your Flan? has expanded from a single location to 70 franchisees nationwide, one international franchise in Dubai UAE, and hundreds of registered resellers.
Jeremy Hassell, City Cave (Australia) – Recognizing the need for a health and wellness center that focused on longevity and total well-being of individuals, Jeremy Hassell launched City Cave in Australia with cofounder Tim Butters. Since the opening of its first location in 2016, City Cave has grown to offer a combination of holistic and clinical services tailored to each guest’s needs and provides the ideal space for relaxing and meditation. From float therapy to infrared saunas and yoga, City Cave aims to deliver the perfect facility that adds years of quality life to those in the community. Today, City Cave has 4 locations across Australia, with plans to continue its expansion.
Venuste Kubimana, A Water Kiosk At School (Kenya) – Named amongst Africa’s Top 50 Innovators in 2018 and AIDF Global Innovator of the Year, Venuste Kubwimana is a youth activist and social entrepreneur based in Kenya. He is the Founder and Secretary General of the International Transformation Foundation, a parent organization of the franchising initiative A Water Kiosk at School launched by Venuste in 2014. He was inspired by personal experiences growing up in communities where students walk long distances to gather water for their families before and after going to school. As a result, many children in the area have a high tendency to drop out of school in order to meet their needs. A Water Kiosk at School is a school-based and student-managed business selling clean tap water to community residents at an affordable price. It is both an educational and profitable business teaching students business and entrepreneurial skills and generating much-needed income for schools.
The additional 2019 NextGen in Franchising winners include: Abedalrahman AL-Zghoul, Bread for Education (Jordan); Gamal Albinsaid, Garbage Clinical Insurance (Indonesia); Jason Dolan, Core9 Fitness (Australia); Reka Oszlanczi, Creppy Franchise System (Hungary); Rihab Hasanain, Blooming B’s (Saudi Arabia); Ruth Agbaji, Code Wiz (United States); Samuel Munguti, Farmers Pride (Kenya); and Timea Vas, Don’t Panic English (Hungary).
NextGen winners received a spot at the NextGen in Franchising Summit, an educational and networking program for next generation entrepreneurs at the IFA Annual Convention, a year membership with the IFA; an opportunity to participate in the final round of the NextGen in Franchising Global Competition for a chance to win a monetary investment to help grow their businesses; and opportunities to network with leading franchisors, franchisees and suppliers and with other young entrepreneurs.
The NextGen in Franchising program is made possible due to the generosity of its donors and sponsors, which include David McKinnon, the founding sponsor; the Frederick A. DeLuca Foundation/Subway; the Stewart & Jane Bainum Fund; Lawrence “Doc” Cohen, Doc & Associates; J. Willard and Alice S. Marriott Foundation; Tariq Farid, Edible Arrangements; Charlie Chase, FirstService Brands; Aziz Hashim, NRD Holdings; Joe Bourdow, Valpak; Tony Valle, ELM Perform; Dave Mortensen, Anytime Fitness; and Melanie Bergeron, Two Men & A Truck Intl.
