Trello
MailChimp

Summary: every time that y/n speaks to lando in hindi, and he falls in love even more
✎ ln x desi!reader ⊹ ࣪ ˖
✎ fluff ⊹ ࣪ ˖
masterlist ☾☼
lando norris was in love with his girlfriend. like, head over heels, i-will-give-you-my-life-but-live-for-you-if-you-ask kind of love. he loved her confidence and her humour, and how she loved to make jokes about him being british and her being indian. he loved her ambition and her independence and her vulnerability. he loved how much she loved and how she lit up the room every time she walked in.
he, especially, loved when she spoke in hindi. he loved her voice. hearing it healed him on a level he did not understand. but, pair it up with her speaking her native language, and somehow it sounded better. it felt like home.
lando was used to her talking to her family and friends in hindi, and sometimes even caught her talking to herself in hindi. it was the language that she grew up surrounded in, it made sense. the way formula one fans would go silent when the radio sound would go off on their screens, lando became completely silent just so he could listen to her talk. he barely ever understood what she would say, mainly because she would talk too fast for him, but he still listened.
he picked up on a few words here and there, and from context, he had a rough idea what they meant. y/n had never spoken to him in hindi, and it worried him that maybe she did not feel comfortable enough talking to him in a language that she was most comfortable in.
he understood on some levels that as a woman of colour, she had faced a lot of prejudice at her place of work. he could never relate to it, but he knew from watching carlos, checo, lewis, zhou, yuki, and more the way that people discriminated against them. he saw first hand the amount of hate comments that the asian drivers had received, and how carlos and checo's driving had often been discredited because they were spanish or mexican. to avoid facing that kind of discrimination, y/n chose to only ever speak in english, aside from the times that she was speaking to her friends and family in india.
the first time it had happened though, the first time that she spoke to him in hindi was a few months into the relationship, and lando hadn't realised until that moment just how in love he was.
1.
y/n had been busy with work. he knew that she was having a stressful week with the amount of workload her boss put on her just to see if she had what their team needed. whatever the fuck that meant. but, he knew y/n, and he knew that she would take everything her boss threw at her with stride and finish everything needed.
it was almost time for dinner, and lando tried his best to not disturb his girlfriend. he had stuck around in his gaming room for most of the time, and occasionally came out to remind y/n to drink water to change her position so that she didn't hurt her back or her neck.
opening the fridge, lando stared at the contents. his trainer had already sent in his week's meals. pulling one of the boxes out, he searched for something that y/n could eat. opening different boxes, he found one with leftover pasta from last night's dinner. he figured it would be good enough to eat, and since it was y/n's comfort food, she wouldn't mind having pasta two nights in a row.
"y/n, lovie, do you want to have last night's pasta? i can heat it up for you now," lando asked.
y/n was distracted, but she had heard his question, and in her distracted state, she said, "haanji,"
lando froze. y/n had responded to him in hindi. his girlfriend had responded to him in a language that she felt the most herself in. he peeked towards the living room, making sure that he was hidden from her view. quickly shoving the pasta in the microwave, lando couldn't help but dork dance a little bit.
his girlfriend loved him! his girlfriend was comfortable with him! his girlfriend felt safe with him! he threw his fist in the air as he silently jumped around till the microwave beeped.
quickly taking out the bowl, he filled up her bottle with water, and took her dinner to where she was sitting on the couch. her eyes were focused on the screen, her glasses almost falling off her nose.
setting the bowl and her bottle on the coffee table, lando gently ran his fingers through her hair till she looked up at him, confused for a moment.
"hi, lovie," lando said softly. he pushed her glasses up to the bridge of her nose, as she smiled at him.
"hi. what are you doing here? i thought you were streaming?" she asked, setting her laptop aside.
"i am. i got hungry, so i came to get my dinner, and then i noticed that you hadn't eaten as well, so i heated up last night's pasta."
y/n groaned, "oh my god, i needed pasta right now. thank you, baba." she was already settling on the floor, squeezing herself in the space between the couch and the coffee table.
lando leaned down and pressed a kiss at the top of her head, "are you done with work?"
stuffing a mouthful of pasta, y/n shook her head. lando sat on the couch, running his fingers through her hair continuously, hoping that it was soothing. he waited patiently for her to swallow her food.
"nahi. my boss is making me do a million changes constantly, and every time i give him my reasons for the changes i did, he fights me, and then agrees with me. it's so annoying," y/n ranted.
lando hummed, "that does sound annoying,"
"right!" y/n vented out her work frustration in between bites, and lando sat there with a smile on his face. she had spoken to him in hindi, though not a lot of words, but it counted nonetheless.
once y/n was done with her dinner, and lando had made sure that she had drank enough water, he kissed her softly before letting her get back to work, and he took his dinner and went back to his streaming, where max yelled at him for taking so long.
he didn't even care. all he cared about was the woman sitting in his living room who was letting him into a part of her that she kept guarded from the rest of the world.
the second time it happened, it was on a race weekend. y/n had accompanied him for practice race 3 and the qualifying on saturday. between the first and the second time, lando had learned a lot more hindi, but only the basics. he would ask y/n what some of the words that she was saying meant, and he honestly wasn't surprised when most of them turned out to be cuss words.
2.
lando had kept y/n close to him as much as possible in the paddock. neither of them wanted the media to know about their relationship just yet, so y/n disguised herself as someone part of the team and hung around in places where lando could see her.
y/n kept herself busy, talking to oscar, or some of the mechanics or the pr team. it was fun talking to the people who were part of lando's work life, and she had enjoyed herself thoroughly. lando was exceptionally happy that she was happy and comfortable.
y/n had watched from the practice race from the paddock. lando and she had decided that before and after the races, they would find each other in his driver's room. lando claimed that he needed his good luck kiss from his girlfriend. y/n claimed that he was just being clingy.
after the practice sessions were over, lando had quickly found her in his driver's room, kissing her as soon as the door closed. the two stayed there talking till someone came, calling lando for qualifying.
the process repeated.
y/n watched the qualifying from the paddock, eyes locked on the screen. she watched as lando qualified from q1 to q2 and then from q2 to q3, and she cheered with the rest of the team when lando got p2.
jumping from her seat, y/n quickly ran to lando's driver's room, and bounced on her feet as she waited for him. though, she didn't have to wait long, because before she knew it, lando was bursting in the room.
his arms wrapped around her waist, and he was picking her up as the two laughed.
"i'm so proud of you!" y/n exclaimed.
"p2, baby!"
before they could celebrate further, one of the pr team member was knocking on the door, calling lando for the media work.
sighing, lando quickly kissed y/n, before he left. y/n smiled as she watched him go, incredibly proud of him and how far he had come.
she knew that media would take some time, so she settled on the couch, covering herself up with lando's hoodie. it was cozy and it smelled of him and she didn't realise when she fell asleep.
lando had tried to wrap up media as soon as possible. they always asked him the same questions every time, and lando desperately wanted to go back to y/n.
he repeated the answers that the media trained him to say, and he smiled and laughed at all the right places. he said what the media wanted to hear, and he made small talk with all the drivers he met on the way back. he even stopped to quickly speak to andrea and zak. but, with every second away from his girlfriend, he was getting all the more impatient.
once all his duties were over, he practically ran to his driver's room. pushing the door open, he stopped short, a smile taking over his face.
his adorable girlfriend was cuddled on the tiny bed that he had with his mclaren hoodie clutched in her hands. closing the door softly behind him, he sat on the edge of the bed and gently shook her awake.
"lovie?"
y/n let out a soft groan before she opened her eyes, looking up at lando. "hi, lan. hogaya sab?"
lando nodded, "mhmm. i'm done with media and everything, and now we can go home,"
y/n nodded. she heard what he said. but, she closed her eyes again and cuddled further into lando's hoodie. softly, she said, "chaddar chahiye."
lando chuckled, "we've got blankets at home, baby. we can go home and cuddle and sleep till tomorrow morning,"
she opened her eyes slightly and held out her pinky finger to him, "promise?"
he laughed, curling his finger around hers before leaning in and pressing a kiss to their joined fingers, "promise, lovie. let's go, now."
y/n sat up, satisfied with lando's promise. she let him hold onto her as they quickly left the paddock and headed towards his car, where she promptly fell asleep again, her pinky finger locked in his.
moments like these, lando wished he could remember forever. if he had the ability to turn memories into movies, he would turn this moment into a never ending movie.
over the years, he had gotten good at understanding her hindi. he could understand sentences, though he could never form a single one. the pronunciations were too difficult for him, but he appreciated y/n trying to teach him nonetheless. especially when she taught him the correct way to pronounce 'shawarma'.
3.
something that was lando's favourite little habit that y/n had was how she had an internal clock for some things. it was never for anything useful like eating meals on time or drinking enough water. it was more for things like calling up her mother when it was lunch time in india, or texting him when he'd be home.
her mind somehow instinctively called or texted at the same time every day, and he never understood how that was possible. but, he refused to question it.
a conversation that the two had almost every time he was out for work or at the gym, training, at exactly 7:52 pm, y/n texted him asking where he was.
she always looked forward to him coming home, and it made lando's heart warm, knowing that someone he loved, loved him enough to want him around.
she was more than enough for him, but he was also enough for her.
though, it was on their first anniversary when she called him a name that truly made him realise just how much she loved him.
4.
lando had stayed up all night putting the final touches to his gift for y/n. since he enjoyed art, and she loved collecting his art work, lando had bought a clear lamp to keep at her bedside and decorate it on his own.
he'd been told that it was a shitty gift idea. but, y/n was afraid of sleeping in complete darkness, so maybe it wasn't such a shitty idea? he didn't know, and he wasn't sure if he wanted to know.
unfortunately, staying up all night and spending the entire anniversary day with his girlfriend doing boyfriend-girlfriend things had tired him out beyond belief and he had fallen sick.
as he lay on the couch wrapped in blankets, he listened to his girlfriend's muttering, "meine pehele kaha tha ki mat karo, par kisi ne sunni? nahi. meri baat sunta kaun hai iss ghar mein."
"babe, i'm sorry," lando whined.
sighing, y/n sat close to her boyfriend and said, "jaan-e-mann, i don't care about anything else more than you. you need to take care of your health first. i love the gift, i promise, but i just needed you."
he stared at her for a second before saying, "that one's new. i haven't heard that one before,"
tilting her head in confusion, she asked, "what's new? jaan-e-mann?"
lando nodded, pulling the blankets closer to his face.
her cheeks turned red as she explained, "jaan-e-mann means my love, my life, my beloved. you are my love, my life, and my beloved. you are my jaan. my jaan-e-mann,"
his smile was wide, and he reached out his hand towards her. she took his hand, and he interlocked their fingers before he whispered, "you're my jaan-e-mann too,"
y/n leaned in, kissing lando, before she pulled back and slapped his chest, "i'm still mad at you for getting sick!"
lando let out a playful groan. he was her jaan-e-mann. nothing else mattered.

Cockroach!
Pavitr Prabhakar x f!reader
Summary: Reader is scared of roaches and accidentally finds one in the bathroom. Pavitr saves her + fluff <3 [used Google translate for Hindi words, sorry if it's wrong 😅] My boi has so less fics so i decided to do one myself '^_^ A/N: "N/n" means nickname
"Paviiiiiii beta!", Maya auntie calls from the kitchen. "Can you please get the door? I'm busy."
"I got it, aunite!"
Pavitr opens the door to none other than his best friend and partner-in-crime, Y/n.
"Hey, N/n!", he pulls you into an embrace. You smile and return the sentiment, nuzzling his cheek before pulling away.
You remove your shoes outside and step in, as is custom in India, greeted with a playful pinch to your cheek by Maya auntie herself. You giggle. She was like a mother to you and you loved her as such.
"My beti, I haven't seen you in a week! How was your vacation?"
"It wasn't great without you, auntie. We just got home and I came to see you right away!"
"Suck up, suck up", mutters Pavitr in the background, gaining a playful slap to his head -courtesy of you.
"Did you do your exams well? I didn't have a chance to ask you before you left."
"I think I'll get an 'A', thanks to Pavitr's tutoring."
You watch him perk up out of the corner of your eyes as your praise.
The boy in question puffs out his chest, showing off his biceps from where he's leaning on the kitchen door frame. "Have no fear, Pavitr is here!"
You cup your mouth, laughing at his antics as Maya auntie playfully shakes her head in exasperation.
"Pavu can be like that sometimes", she chuckles, leaning into your ear in a stage whisper, "He missed you a lot, you know. Never shuts up about you. And, you know, beti, I keep asking him to already tell you but-"
"AUNTIE!"
You both blush as Pavitr hushes the old woman. She just winks at you. Of course, she knows.
The awkwardness is too much and Pavitr takes your hand, leading you into his room.
"Okay okay, enough talk, ladies. Y/n and I have some work to do -for a project!", he adds quickly when Maya auntie smirks at him. "I.. that-..auntie!"
She just giggles and ruffles his hair before walking back to the kitchen, leaving you both standing awkwardly next to each other, flustered.
Pavitr clears his throat. "She.. she was just kidding, I didn't-"
"It's okay", you say shyly.
You have feelings for him too but both of you are just too timid and would rather take it to your grave than admit it out loud.
He falls onto his bed and crosses one leg over the other, resting his head on his elbows as you sit next to him.
"So, what has my favourite person been upto in the meantime, leaving me all alone in this big, big city?"
You playfully roll your eyes. Dramatic little shit.
"You? Alone? Liar, the whole city is your friend."
He pouts, trying to look offended, but gives in and laughs.
You discuss about your project and he shows you some beta models of his brilliant ideas. You stare in awe at the young genius before you, playing with his "toys" as he explains them patiently.
"Hey, can I use your bathroom for a sec?", you ask when he finishes.
"Sure. Make yourself at home, N/n! I'll go sneak us some snacks", he winks, peeking from outside his door.
You shake your head, smiling. It's not that Maya auntie would refuse you snacks, but Pavitr convinced you there was a thrill in food-stealing and you couldn't deny it.
You shut the door, switch on the light and turn to the sink to wash your face when there it is -the thing that you most fear, the monster of your nightmares -a cockroach!
You scream bloody murder and run out of the bathroom, colliding into a hard wall. You look up realising it's actually Pavitr.
"You okay, N/n?"
"R-roach! Roach!", you point at the bathroom door frantically.
You stay in the corner as he goes in and stomps it dead, washing his hands before he comes to hug you.
"Deep breaths, deep breaths.. now exhale.. that's it.."
You cling onto him and follow his orders, grip loosing as your breathing slows down. His hand circle your waist, holding you firm and secure. You rest your head on his chest, calming down at the rhythmic beat of his heart.
You only belatedly realize it: you're hugging him, your chests touching each other's.
He seems to realizes it at the same time too, but instead of letting you go -like every other time- his hands tighten around your waist.
Pavitr catches your eyes with his own mesmerizing brown eyes; yours unable to leave him, entranced by his orbs as he slowly, gently leans in. Without noticing, you lean in too.
The gentle touch of soft lips spark fireworks in your body, your nerves tingling with the new feeling of his lips on yours. You could get used to this.
You panick a little it registers what you're doing, but Pavitr chases your lips, pressing against them firmly and you instantly calm down. He cups your face, cradling your neck as he brings your lips closer. It's his way of reassuring that you have nothing to fear.
"Hope I'm not interrupting anything."
You guys jump back as if burned when the door suddenly flies open. Maya auntie is standing there with a guiless face and a bright smile.
"I brought chai for you kids!", she says cheerfully and sets down the cups. "Did you hear that scream earlier? Where did it come from?"
"It, uh, it was me, auntie", you say, quite embarresed, running a hand through your matted up hair. "There was a cockroach in the bathroom and I got scared."
"Aww, poor child."
Pavitr looks away, blush blooming on his cheeks yet not obvious due to his skin tone. He rocks on his heels, running a hand through his hair. You know he too can still feel your lips on his from the way his eyes never leave you.
Maya auntie's eyes sparkle mischievously as she smiles and goes into the bathroom, finding the toy roach and throwing it into the trash can.
She smirks under her breath and washes her hands, sighing as she mutters in amusement.
"Oh, the things an old lady gotta do.."

How’s this? I’m a young American on a business trip to Mumbai but I took the wrong suitcase at baggage claim. It feels heavy like there’s weights in it or something.
Yes, the suitcase is heavy as hell. But by the time you leave the terminal, you'll be able to handle it better.
India is challenging. Actually, someone from the hotel should have picked you up. But you couldn't find anyone with your name tag. So you fight your way through all the unlicensed cab drivers. And you are relieved when you finally find an official looking cab. Compared to all the rather slim Indians scurrying around you, your driver is quite a muscleman. You can't help but keep looking in the direction of his upper arms, which are stretching his T-shirt sleeves to bursting point. You tell him the address of your hotel. He nods and drives off.
At first, you have no idea what the cab driver is telling you. This Indian accent takes some getting used to. But with time it gets better. And you have a lot of time. Although it is still before sunrise, all the streets are mercilessly congested. Somehow you expected to get onto an expressway at some point. Instead, you drive deeper and deeper into the maze of alleys. But you recognize a few things. Even though everything is still closed at this time of day, there's the dry cleaners back there where you used to help out as a student.
Fuck! Where do you get this weird idea? You're from Ohio. You've never been to Asia. Let alone India. You're starting to sweat. The driver asks you if he should adjust the air conditioning. Brother, that's just for wimps, you reply. In Hindi. You open your kurta at the top of your neck and enjoy the little breeze you get in the stop-and-go traffic on your chest.
Your buddy parks his car in the small garage behind the gym. You grab the suitcase and carry it up to your second floor storage. Good stuff you brought back from your trip to Moscow. The guys in Russia are simply better at nutritional supplements. Some of your customers will pay good money for it. But before you open the gym in an hour, you're going to work out a bit.
Fuck, that felt good! After the long time in the plane and in the car, finally blood in your muscles again. Now the day can really start!

Common Pitfalls in Hindi to Bengali Translation: Discussing Potential Errors and How to Avoid Them
Translation is an essential tool for bridging the gap between languages, cultures, and ideas. Hindi to Bengali translation is one such process that plays a pivotal role, especially in India, where both Hindi and Bengali are widely spoken languages. Bengali, as the second most spoken language in India, holds significant importance for businesses, individuals, and institutions aiming to communicate effectively across regions. However, translating from Hindi to Bengali can often be challenging due to differences in grammar, syntax, and cultural nuances.
In this article, we will explore the most common pitfalls encountered during Hindi to Bengali translation, highlighting the potential errors that arise in the process. We will also offer practical tips to help avoid these issues, ensuring that your translations are not only accurate but also culturally relevant. By understanding these pitfalls, you can achieve smoother and more effective communication.
1. Misinterpretation of Words and Phrases
One of the most common issues in Hindi to Bengali translation is the misinterpretation of words or phrases. Hindi and Bengali have distinct vocabulary and expressions, even though they share some similarities. Often, literal translation leads to errors because the meaning of a word or phrase in Hindi may not be equivalent to its Bengali counterpart. For example, translating the Hindi phrase "मन की बात" directly into Bengali can lead to confusion, as the expression might not carry the same connotations.
How to Avoid This:
Focus on contextual translation rather than literal translation.
Understand the cultural nuances behind a phrase or word in both languages.
Use reliable bilingual dictionaries or online tools that provide contextual meanings.
2. Grammatical Errors
Grammar rules differ significantly between Hindi and Bengali. Hindi uses subject-object-verb (SOV) sentence structure, while Bengali also follows SOV but has different ways to express tenses, gender, and plurals. Errors in sentence structure or tense usage are common pitfalls in translation.
For instance, translating a simple sentence like "वह किताब पढ़ रहा है" into Bengali can result in grammatical inconsistencies if not handled properly.
How to Avoid This:
Learn and practice the grammar rules of both languages.
Ensure that the sentence structure in the translated content aligns with Bengali grammar.
Use proofreading tools or consult with native speakers to double-check the grammar.
3. Neglecting Cultural Differences
Cultural nuances play a huge role in language. A phrase or idiom that makes perfect sense in Hindi may be completely irrelevant or misunderstood in Bengali. Neglecting these cultural subtleties can lead to awkward or inaccurate translations.
For example, Hindi idioms like "नानी याद आना" may not have an equivalent in Bengali and could confuse the reader if translated literally. Understanding cultural references ensures that the meaning is correctly conveyed in the target language.
How to Avoid This:
Study the cultural context of both languages.
Avoid direct translations of idioms or cultural phrases unless an equivalent exists in Bengali.
Consult native speakers for culturally sensitive terms and phrases.
4. Inconsistent Use of Formal and Informal Language
Both Hindi and Bengali have formal and informal speech forms. Inconsistent use of these forms can create a mismatch in tone. For example, while translating a formal document from Hindi to Bengali, using informal language could reduce the professionalism of the content.
How to Avoid This:
Identify the target audience and choose the appropriate form (formal or informal) for translation.
Be consistent in using either formal or informal language throughout the document.
Proofread and cross-check with formal writing guidelines in both languages.
5. Errors in Translating Technical Terms
Another common pitfall in Hindi to Bengali translation is the incorrect translation of technical terms or jargon. Certain fields like law, medicine, or technology have specific terminologies that may not have direct equivalents in Bengali. Misinterpreting these terms can lead to miscommunication.
For example, technical terms like "अधिनियम" (in law) may need specialized attention during translation to ensure their accurate representation in Bengali.
How to Avoid This:
Use industry-specific dictionaries or glossaries for technical terms.
Keep up-to-date with the latest terminology used in specific fields.
When in doubt, retain the original term in Hindi and provide an explanation in Bengali.
6. Lack of Attention to Dialects
Bengali, like Hindi, has several dialects. If the target audience speaks a specific dialect of Bengali, failing to consider this can make the translation less effective. Certain words or phrases may differ in meaning across dialects, leading to confusion.
How to Avoid This:
Identify the target dialect and customize the translation accordingly.
Consider the regional variation in language while translating.
If unsure, stick to standard Bengali, which is widely understood.
7. Incorrect Translation of Names and Titles
Proper nouns, such as names, titles, and place names, can be tricky when translating from Hindi to Bengali. Translating these incorrectly can distort the meaning or significance of the content. For example, names of people, books, or places should be treated carefully.
How to Avoid This:
Avoid translating proper nouns unless they have a well-known equivalent in Bengali.
Research the correct translation or spelling of titles and place names.
When in doubt, keep the original name or title.
Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)
What are the major differences between Hindi and Bengali?
Hindi and Bengali differ in grammar, vocabulary, and cultural context. While both are Indo-Aryan languages, they have distinct phonetic systems and syntax.
Can I use machine translation for Hindi to Bengali translation?
While machine translation tools like Google Translate can be helpful, they often miss nuances and cultural subtleties, making human translation or proofreading necessary.
How can I ensure accuracy in Hindi to Bengali translation?
Use bilingual dictionaries, consult native speakers, and prioritize contextual meaning over literal translation. Always proofread your translation for grammatical and cultural accuracy.
Is it expensive to hire professional Hindi to Bengali translation services in India?
Professional translation services in India can range from ₹500 to ₹2000 per page, depending on the complexity and field of translation.
Can I translate technical documents from Hindi to Bengali myself?
Translating technical documents requires specialized knowledge of terminology. It's best to hire professionals or use industry-specific tools to ensure accuracy.
Conclusion
Hindi to Bengali translation is a complex task that requires careful attention to grammar, vocabulary, cultural context, and the target audience. By understanding and avoiding the common pitfalls discussed in this article, you can improve the quality of your translations and ensure that your message is conveyed accurately. Whether you're working on personal communication, business documents, or technical content, following these guidelines will help you achieve a smooth and effective translation process.

The Modern Alchemist
By Arjuwan Lakkdawala
Ink in the Internet
It is said that the arrow of time always travels in one direction, time and the events that unfold in it are linear. The First Law of Thermodynamics states that the energy in the whole observable universe is the same, except it changes its state, like when you burn firewood and it turns to smoke. The Second Law of Thermodynamics states that Entropy increases and is irreversible, like when you break an egg, and that systems always go from orderly to disorderly.
And then there is the matter of reaching equilibrium, like when you pour milk into a cup of tea, the milk will flow through it till it is evenly spread.
When scientists study any phenomena, the wisest know that the main objective should be to find principles and laws about how a certain entity, or system functions, this is very difficult, and could be considered the greatest secrets of the world as we know it.
Why the fundamental laws are so elusive and mysterious we don't know, but it is clear that whenever scientists were able to establish (even if to a certain percentage) a law or principle, it was a catalyst for inventions, technology, and scientific developments.
The history of scientific studies dates way back to a branch of the science of the time called 'Alchemy" originating from the Arabic 'Al Kimia." In present day Arabic the word means 'Chemistry.'
Historical records state that Alchemy very likely started in Egypt and Arabia, and then the knowledge was passed down to Rome and ancient Greece, and then to the west. However, whatever were the scientific endeavours of the original Alchemists, it became generally indistinguishable from the other non-scientific ideas and theories that are part of Alchemy.
Western medieval Alchemists had three priorities; Find the Philosopher's Stone - which they believed has supernatural powers, find the Elixir of life and youth - possibly using the stone, transform common metals into silver and gold.
While these are fantastical aspirations, somehow the experiments that the ancient Alchemists did with the elements, was the start of sciences like pharmacology, metallurgy, and chemistry.
I do think there is a linear learning connection throughout the past centuries, and into the future, perhaps a pattern of the methods of discoveries, or fragments of information that will fit together like pieces of a puzzle.
In this century scientists and thinkers are the Modern Alchemists, and chemistry is the real scientific Alchemy.
But do we still try to attain things that seem on the boundaries of the supernatural - while I was going through the collection of H.G. Wells books, I read The Invisible Man, a masterpiece like his previous books that I have read.
(Spoiler Alert)
In the science fiction story he explains invisibility through chemistry, and I have seen various movies with similar ideas, the most memorable to me is the beloved Walt Disney classic: 'Now You See Him, Now You Don't,' and the Hindi classic: Mr. India.
In the first it is invisibility through chemistry, and in the second it's invisibility through the bending of light.
The two movies sum up the whole business of hypothetical invisibility by light and chemistry.
My interest sparked by Wells and the movies, I found invisibility really interesting to explore scientifically and I did a web search.
A 2022 Big Think article came up in the search, titled: 'Invisibility Cloaks Are Not Just Possible, But Are Becoming Reality'
Feels like the quest for the Philosopher's Stone, or the Elixir of Life (Modern Alchemists at work)
Perhaps this is a pattern of human curiosity that won't stop even at what appears (or literally doesn't appear) impossible.
The writer mentions science fiction invisibility in Star Trek, and goes on to explain a scientific project involving cutting edge technology, materials, and lenses.
The aim of the project is to combine "Metalenses with Metamaterials"
Metamaterial will be engineered using nanotechnology to bend light, while the Metalense will pace the wavelenght speed of each colour of light (invisible in white light) to appear again as white light after passing over the Metamaterial.
To give a more precise description:
The reason is that each colour of light has its own speed, and this is why a prism is shaped to split white invisible light into a rainbow because they don't travel through the prism at the same speed. The Metalense will balance the speed to equilibrium and so it will appear as white light again.
When travelling in a vacuum the different wavelengths of light can travel at the same speed but not when going through a medium.
We are in 2024 so I'm guessing the "invisibility cloak" which I think will be like the one in Harry Potter, is still in the making, pretty much like Alchemists trying to turn common metals into gold.
When it comes to nature camouflage is the closest thing to invisibility so far discovered.
The relation of colours, wavelengths of light, and nano structures will require volumes of books, but I have a few fascinating brief examples. The colour blue that we see is an illusion caused by nano structures, and most of the time in nature when you see blue it is iridescence, and not a pigment, it generally doesn't exist as a pigment like the other colours.
Bats hunt moths with radar like sound waves that detect them, so to counter this there are moths with hairy coating which deflect the sound waves - making it invisible to the bat.
In technology stealth planes are designed to deflect radar detection like moths, so they are invisible to radars.
However, I found more astonishing than all this was the creation of light by chemistry; such as bioluminescence and chemiluminescence. The first happens in living things, and the latter in non-living.
Light of this type is 'cold light' (very low heat.)
But how is it used for camouflage - well here comes the Hatchet Fish, it has organs that create light and point downwards, so that its silhouette against the surface of the ocean is camouflaged (in this case called counterillumination) as sunlight, and predators swimming below cannot distinguish it. Organs like these are called 'photopores.'
Another sea creature the Brittle Star uses the bioluminescence it can make in a rather ingenious type of camouflage or a decoy, that is when it is threatened by a predator it detatches a glowing arm (which it can regrow) and leaves the predator following the arm while it sneaks away.
The sea cucumber detaches its luminescencent parts on other fish, so the predator follows the glowing fish instead of it.
Bioluminescence is produced by the compound luciferin; with a chemical reaction either with the enzyme luciferase or the chemical photoprotien.
An example of chemiluminescence is the element phosphorous, officially discovered by the German alchemist Hennig Brand in 1669, when he was trying to create the Philosopher's Stone, he named the element from the Greek meaning "bearer of light" because it glowed. White phosphorous is highly flammable and toxic.
Glow-in-the-dark toys and products have phosphor. How it glows is like this: when light is shone on phosphor, its electrons get excited and are dislodged from their 'ground state' to 'intermediate state' and when they return to the ground state the energy of this is emitted in the form of the glow, it is more precisely termed 'electroluminescence.'
