Trekking the Tea Fields with Dosha and Shiva
Today’s hike was 13-15 km through two tea plantations and with surprisingly different view points. The workers in the tea plantations are primarily Tamil and they have small villages throughout these massive plantations with houses, schools, and tea factories. These are not rolling hills but sometimes steep sided mountains with tea planted amongst huge rock slides. The pickers work a regulated 8 hour day, receive a salary of about 950 rupees per day and are expected to pick around 16kg/day ( with Sat and Sundays off!). They get a tea break ad a lunch break are finish work each day but 4:30pm. Tea really is quite a civilized business!
At breaks, one plucker starts s small fire and makes tea for everyone. The pluckers meet at a spot and weight in their haul twice a day. One plantation had a beautiful hut and a large urn of clean, clear water with a sign that said, “ for anyone who needs water”. And they’d left a coconut husk on top as a cup!
We started our day with an offering to a small Hindu temple set up but a eucalyptus tree. Dosha cracked a coconut slightly, used the oil to light it a bit, and used that dose to light incense. Then he smashed the coconut on the ground like a cricket pitcher, scaring the bejesus, or Hindi equivalent, out of us. But because we were civilized, we picked up the pieces and then ate them.
The Tamil workers say a little prayer each day and Dosha said a little prayer for our safe travel- a prayer that came with snacks!
The itinerary was to go up a little, go level, then go up a bit more, level off, then down.
What actually happened: we went up a little, leveled off , hit an amazing viewpoint and stopped to look around. On the very top of the mountain we’re white dots that were actually pluckers. Dosha said we’d be able to get a better idea of picking when we met them. Wait, what? They were literally dots, clinging to the top of the mountain. Surely I heard wrong?
We went up, up, hit another amazing viewpoint, and a Tamil village ad finally, took a break...for tea!
Out of no where, a man shows up with a huge silver tea pot, China mugs and a silver tea tray. We are on the side of the mountain!
Tea drank, we head on our way, which I assume is now the downhill part. Nope, we are going to see the dots! So, up, up, up we go. Incredible scenery and the hiking is cobbled roads, grass fields, rock quarry, rock steps, everything you could imagine. The uphill was not bad at all.
We slow it down a bit so we can stop to enjoy the view. Others want to race the circuit so off they go. I hang back with a couple of plodders like myself and get our guide, Asa to myself to ask questions about the area. We also come up with a new tour idea for Intrepid called , “Try it for a day, a cultural experience”. We will start in SL and people can sign up for an optional one day experience of being a tea pluckers for a day, being a batik maker for a day, being a stilt fisherman for a day ( that one is from Shiva who thinks our idea is awesome).
A few rest stops along the way, and we arrived at Dosha’s house. His wife has made us lunch!
Tamil food is a little different than SL food. Less rice, almost no meat, lots of eggs. We have dosas ( big savoury pancakes), idly ( rice version of a polenta cake), egg dhal, coconut sambal with almost no chili and small, fried pakoras.
The pakoras were the hit of the day! Dosha kept putting more on Powell’s plate and he proclaimed it to be his favorite thing so far ( I hope so cause he ate 20 of them!)
Dessert was a warm thin tapioca pudding made with cardamom, cinnamon and sultanas. You crush up a papadum into the pudding and eat it.
I honestly spend a good portion of the day lamenting how full I am.
Lunch is a 20 min walk to our hotel. We walk it in and our hotel overlooks the entire valley. Because it’s a Tamil town, there is a town-wide call to prayer that echos out across the whole valley.
We’ll only be here one night to shower and rest then we take the train up to the summit tomorrow and hike back down to Bandarawela.

#760 SEVEN CHEERS for The Iron Lady as she turns SEVENty... :-)
Just as my mom Smt. Sanjeevini Rao turns 70 tomorrow ,here are 7 special moments which makes me feel proud of her. I call her The Iron Lady for these very special qualities. A gritty , focused and tough lady had a very special 70 years.
Moment 1 : Period 1984. Place Bhadravathi. Dad was in transferable job as he had moved to marketing role. We got transferred from Bangalore to Bhadravathi. Me and Seema joined St Charles school. Mom and Dad were curious to see how we would fare in school considering change of school is not always easy to adapt. I was in 2nd standard and Seema in 5th standard. St Charles was a very competitive school with loads of bright students. In mid term exams, we did well. Results were to be announced after festival holiday break. Mom had put in a great effort to get me accustomed to new syllabus and new school. St Charles had a tradition of announcing top 3 ranks of each class in morning assembly. This was to encourage the students. I was literally chatting my friend Ashit during the assembly when all of a sudden something shocking happened. They announced my name for 2nd rank. In our class, we had 2 students by my name. They had not announced initials. They again announced my name with Boloor tag to it. I was shocked more than surprised. My hands were almost trembling when I ran towards the stage. I had shock expression in my face even when I received marks card from principal. Seema also came 2nd in class in that exams. Mom was thrilled . Dad was even more as he felt a bit guilty of being transferred to Bhadravathi. He literally picked me and threw into the air. My head almost touched the roof the hall in the house. Well, fun just started here. Seema was always a student who would excel consistently. I was like Ravi Shastri, happy in hitting a few sixes and then get out of form 😉 In Nov exams, my rank dipped to 10th and in Dec exams to 23rd. During this period, my aunt Sharath was in Bhadravathi. As soon as I showed my marks card to mom, lecture started as expected from mom. I expected that as her oratory skills was like legendary Indira Gandhi. Hard hitting words with spot on points. I had my face covered in hands as I didn’t know whether to cry or laugh. She made a comment “ Your marks has fallen off the mountain, from the peak to the bottom. In next exam, I guess you would dig the ground and go further down !!”. Sharath aunty felt bad and tried to calm mom. I started getting a bit nervous. Things calmed post that. The way she expressed her opinion, I know she was more hurt that I scored less marks. Mom then didn’t say a thing for a week. She then prepared a daily time table of what to read. Seema on the other hand had secured first rank in both the exams. Mom never pressurized me by comparing to Seema. She knew both are of different mould. In today’s sporting world, She was Virat Kohli and I was a mere Rishab Pant with a few sixes here and there. I put in loads of effort post that. I managed to get 5th rank in final exams. This was my first face off with mom’s anger. I can relate to this anger even now. I am a bit tempered. Beneath anger, I knew she wanted me to do the best.
Moment 2 : A couple of years later, mom felt the need to work as it would improve the financial state of the house. She was always fond of teaching. She had done B.Sc in Maths and was even a rank holder. She decided to pursue B.Ed which would open up teacher roles for her. Unfortunately, there was no college in Bhadravathi which had this course. She enrolled into a college in Shimoga which was about 1 hour drive from Bhadravathi those days. So at the age of 38, she decided to do B.ED which was remarkable since she had to do on top of normal household work. She would get up at 5 AM, get household work done, then leave to Shimoga at 7 AM. She would return by 5 PM. She would have some assignments too. She would help me in my homework as well. This routine would go for 1 full year. It needed a lot of guts and determination to do this. By the time, she completed her B.Ed, dad came to home with news of being transferred again. Mom had the expression in her face which would say “ When one challenge is completed, other follows like a shadow!!”. We moved to Bangalore again !!!.
Moment 3 : Period 1988 to 1990. This was a phase we led a rapid life. I was super happy as our house was right in front of massive APS college ground. Mom happen to be teacher of the same school where Seema studied. Infact, she was Maths teacher of Seema for 9th and 10th standard. I was busy playing. The moment I return from school, I would rush to the ground. Mom and Seema would return from school together. This was period where Seema would win loads of awards. Mom was super proud of her. She won 2nd price in Hindi debate competition for whole of Karnataka which was splendid achievement. She won loads of awards in school competitions too. 2 moments brought maximum happiness to Mom during this phase. One was Seema winning Hindi debate competition and another was me winning 3rd prize in science exhibition. I enrolled my name at the last moment and didn’t have any idea what to present. Mom gave the idea of liquids getting heated faster than solid. Example was simple. Have a stand to place a cardboard box. Fill the box with water. Place a candle under the box with enough distance between them. Its observed that water catches fire faster than cardboard box. Mom gave me explanation points around it too which revolved around some molecular theory. I memorized it well as I had a knack of doing it. Judges were some college professors. 70 students had participated in it. Judges heard each student’s explanation. There were some interesting ones too like volcanic effect by my classmate Niranjan. I explained my part well. My only worry was that I had just 2 cardboard boxes. I had to use it smartly. I had to start the experiment just a few minutes before judges came to my seat. I did that well. Judges were impressed. I felt relieved. Post lunch, one of the teachers came and made 2 announcements. One was that parents and teachers would come around to see the displays between 3-5 PM IST. 2nd was the 3 winners. I was shocked more than surprised when they announced my name as 3rd place winner. It made my day. Mom couldn’t come to watch my experiment since she would return from school only 430 PM. I had a bigger issue in hand. I didn’t have any cardboard box left. I went around sweet shop near my house. He spared me 4 old boxes without charging a penny. We would constantly buy veg puff there. So he knew me well. Post 5 PM, I ran to house to announce my results. Mom was super happy. She couldn’t control her wide smile. She and Seema came for prize distribution later too. Actor Srinath was the chief guest that year. It was cool to receive the prize from him. Mom made science and Maths simple for me which helped a great deal in later years to come.
Moment 4 : In 1990, we got transferred again. This time to Madras. It took ages to get settled in the TN capital. I used to call it MAAADDDras with specific emphasis on Mad. I made good friends though but life style was so different. In school too, focus was all on studies. In the school I studied, there was no sports period as well. That’s when we as a family got really close. We literally became friends for each other. To top the pain, our TV had gone to maker’s factory for insurance claim. For 6 months we didn’t have TV. I literally followed 1990 world cup soccer on news paper only. Due to this, we had loads of time though. We used to go for long walks post dinner. We used to live in Ashoknagar which was really a good place. Mom got her job in school pretty fast. She directly approached principal of Jawahar Vidyalaya. They had a post open at that time. Her career really picked up from there. In initial years of tough life in Chennai, mom held us together. This was very critical since we led next 10 years of life in Madras.
Moment 5 : I had a crazy way of studying for my exams. I liked to read while walking. I walked around the house as if it is a temple. This is not just it. I had to have TV on with some sports channel on. I would constantly focus on scores as and when I come in front of TV. When I study, others don’t get to watch TV !! . Mom somehow managed to bear my crazy style of studying. The pace at which I would walk would increase as and when I get further in studies. Infact, I even studied Maths like this. I studied Maths also mentally rather than practicing it. During engineering days, books would get heavy. So I would tear books into 3-4 parts !!! Any other mother would lock their kid in a room and make them study if they study in such a idiotic way. She always smiled when I walked with an expression “ You are one unique specimen !!! “ . She kept saying to his students who came to tuition though that this is exactly NOT the way to study !!! 😊 . What she couldn’t say to me she said to her students. Speaking of making your point in a unique way !!
Moment 6 : I had met with a major accident 2 months before my XII board exams. I was bed ridden for almost 2-3 weeks. It was critical phase for XII as all revision exams and tuitions was scheduled during that phase. Any other parent would have panicked. But mom being mom, she just told me to give it all once I am fine. She did sound a bit nervous though. Mom and dad didn’t want to make me nervous though. Once I recovered, I just had a little more 4 weeks left for exams to start. I decided not to go final revision as well as that would reduce time for preparation for final exams. Though it was a bold move, mom felt that would be the best as well. I prepared a strict timetable. In X board exams even though I did well, I just managed to score 80% marks. Any such dip would make dad’s life difficult as management engineer quota was expensive. I just put my mind out of all this and just focused on studies. I still watched TV and still walked around the house though !!!. I did reasonably well in exams. When the day came for the marks to come, mom decided to stay back home and took off from school. She was a bit nervous but didn’t show it. My marks was like Bulls eye for engineering seat. I got 96.5% in PCM which mattered. I just got 85% in rest. But that was enough. Infact, I was topper in the class in PCM% which was a shocker for me. Had mom not given the freedom to study the way I did, I would not have fared so well. It mattered a lot as management quota seat would cost 40-50K per year but free seat would just cost 6.5K per year. I managed to get the later. Dad was so thrilled that he too came back from office earlier than scheduled with a box of sweets. I finally had a moment which made mom and dad proud and I was proud of it !!!
Moment 7 : Well, this has got to be Singapore trip . Mom, dad, Seema and Sanjay came to Singapore when I was posted there for an onsite assignment. We really had good time there. Mom had a wish to visit a foreign country and she was smiling all through the trip.
Cheers to Mom for her “ Never say die “ spirit. Though there were few moments where our thoughts didn’t match , it was negligible when compared to the respect we have for each other. Mom rocks at 70 !!! 7 cheers to the IRON Lady who turns 70 tomorrow !!!!!

Fully Filmi Feminism
How the Bollywood dream-factory is proving to be the unlikely champion for women in a year that’s given them little to celebrate.
Social conservatism staged an unprecedented resurgence, the President-Elect of the United States espoused some decidely misogynistic points of view on the campaign trail, and closer home, women were served a chilling and wholly unnecessary reminder regarding the precarious safety of shared public spaces. The year gone by, as thousands of Op-Eds have lamented, was a year to dent the hopes of the most ardent and optimistic feminist.
Or so goes the accepted narrative, bookended by the twin hasthtags #notallmen (promoted by men advocating for themselves in the face of atrocities against women) and #yesallwomen (the hashtag of choice for women and men asserting the ubiquity of sexual intimidation and assault).
But to take this narrative at face value is to minimize the potential and promise of a rich vein of home-grown feminism, a feminism that is often at odds with the textbook definitions that have currency on campuses across the world. It’s a feminism that’s steeped in local context but also challenges convention, a feminism that’s recognizable but also provocative and unsettling, a feminism that is striking a chord and generating reflection and reactions.
It’s the first time, in a long time, that feminism is passing the ultimate test of a movement for change – it is exciting the popular imagination, and telling popular stories. Its substance is being served up, filmi style, by an industry noted for its persistent, problematic stereotyping of women. And its filminess is what might just be underpinning its success.
Take Dangal, the movie that’s setting cash registers ringing, tongues wagging and has fingers furiously typing up status messages and comments. Aamir Khan’s portrayal of Mahavir Phogat has been widely heralded. But audiences have also critiqued him for playing the archetypal male saviour who predictably appropriates agency and steals thunder from the women in his life.
But the merit of this movie’s filmi, storybook take on feminism – the North Indian patriarch, defying social codes, pushing his daughters to their very limits to realize his own unfulfilled dreams – is that it speaks to an undeniable, unfashionable Indian truth. In a culture that conventionally charts just one or two courses for women’s lives and privileges the performance of socially mandated roles, the most authentic route to empowerment isn’t necessarily one that’s individualistic.
Authentic empowerment might in fact be empowerment that’s motivated by a call to duty, a call to fulfill the dreams of those that the women in question love. In challenging his daughters, Khan as Phogat is challenging social assumptions about his daughters, his own assumptions about his daughters and his daughters’ assumptions about themselves. Looked at in this way, Mahavir Phogat is not so much a saviour, but a catalyst for change – and which society doesn’t need more of those?
The discovery of women’s talent and potential is a discovery that Geeta, Babita, Mahavir and the people who populate their lives participate in together. It is a collective re-imagining of what women can and can’t, should and shouldn’t do.
Can she? Should she? Recently we’ve been lucky to see a plethora of plotlines in which women take drastic departures from the norm in answering these questions – whether it’s Deepika Padukone’s turn as the warrior princess in Bajirao Mastani and the not-so-dutiful daughter in Piku, Kangana Ranaut as the feisty, relectuantly married woman in Tanu Weds Manu Returns, Anushka Sharma’s wrestling chops in Sultan, and Rani Mukherjee wrecking violent vengeance in Mardaani.
It’s important to note that these empwering plotlines do not represent indie/art/ parallel Hindi cinema, to which they were confined for a large part of the 70s and 80s. They are unabashedly mainstream, the stuff of blockbusters. Promisingly, they are also mirrored by a handful of television shows that are doggedly withstanding the temptation to regress socially in order to garner TRPs – Udaan, the story of a marathon runner crossing caste lines, comes to mind.
And while metaphors of women’s ‘inner strength’ (often interpreted as their gift for enduring pain, humiliation and struggle) have always abounded in Bollywood, the movies mentioned above often explore literal, physical strength – that most masculine of virtures, now muscularly reappropriated by women. In doing so, they are both feeding and feeding off India’s affection for women sportstars – Mary Kom, Saina Nehwal and now Sakshi Malik, Deepa Karmakar and P.V. Sindhu.
This collective re-imagining is also accelerated by how the same performers are living lives in the public eye. Kangana Ranaut was dignified and defiant in embracing tabloid and televised slut-shaming after the collapse of an alleged romance with a male superstar. Deepika Padukone has expanded on filmi ideas of authenticity by embracing and revealing the unsexy truth of her struggles with depression. Twinkle Khanna has reinvented herself as a biting social commentator and engaging wordsmith.
The power of this uniqely filmi feminism doesn’t lie in subscribing to purist feminine ideals. Filmi feminism can be flawed – the women are still unrealistically gorgeous, they often fail to acknowledge their own power to create change, and their transformation and success is often attributed to triggers outside of themselves. But filmi feminism is undoubtedly entertaining, and it creates stories young women – and men – want to start telling for themselves. It fuels alternate expectations and fans the desire for alternate realities. For reasons related to business more so than anything else, filmi feminism is on the prowl for new narratives and icons. It’s winning the popular cultural battles that feminists in the West are still fighting.
The ideal is to evolve into a more nuanced, refined filmi feminism – one where received ideas of masculinity and femininity are subordinated to individual identity, one where women stand for themselves alone and are not forcefully ‘elevated’ into the tiring role of the symbol. Perhaps advertising, with its compact, individualistic narratives will embrace this nuance and lead the way. For now, even as the details remain problematic, the broad brushstrokes look auspicious indeed. Here’s to more robust filmi feminism in the year to come.

Essay about uttarayan An Essay on Uttarayan for Students of College and School Free Reading
The days become longer, the skies clearer and the breeze cooler. The Surya Siddhanta defines Uttarāyaṇa, or Uttarayan as the period between the Makara Sankranti and Karka Sankranti. The term Uttarayana is derived from two different Sanskrit words “uttara” (North) and “ayana” (movement) thus indicating a semantic of the northward movement of the Sun on the celestial sphere. Though Uttarayan is originally a special day of the Hindu calendar, it is said that the idea of flying kites to celebrate the date was a concept that arrived with Muslims from Persia, and it has now transcended all religious boundaries. Makar Sankranti is festivity interval which will be devoted to Lord Sun. The Sun God is worshipped for bestowing nurturing livestock and great crop. The oxen and particularly bulls are worshipped for his or her value in ploughing fields. Hindu scriptures mention Uttarayan as the period between Makar Sankranti (which currently occurs around January 14) and Karka Sankranti (which currently occurs around July 16). The term Uttarayana is derived from two different Sanskrit words ‘uttara’ (North) and ‘ayana’ (movement) thus indicating a northward movement of the Sun on the celestial sphere. According to Hindu Panchang the period of ‘Magh’ to ‘Aasad’ month is known as Uttarayan. Out of six seasons, the winter, spring and summer falls during Uttarayan. The duration of days starts increasing and that of night starts shortening during uttarayan. The Vedic scriptures regard the period of utterayan as the period of deities. A feeling of anticipation, joy and jubilation grips all who celebrate the occasion of thanksgiving and merry-making. Months before the festival of Uttarayan, homes in the localities of various cities in Gujarat turn into kite producing factories with all family members doing their bit in the seasonal cottage business. The paper and sticks are cut, the glue is stirred and thousands of kites are prepared in the market. Bollywood films are no doubt known for the factory fresh romance they churn out year after year but have also been popular for showing the bond and affection that exists within a family. Whether it’s the bond between mother and son (Deewaar), mother and daughter (Mom) between brothers and sisters (Dil Dhadakne Do), there are numerous examples galore besides the obvious ones mentioned here. We will be focussing on the father-son bond as seen in Hindi films which remains another strong pillar when it comes to serving us oodles of mush, not to mention family values. Presenting a list of film where strong men showcased tough love towards each other…
Paa Director : R. Balki (2009) Star Cast: Amitabh Bachchan, Abhishek Bachchan, Vidya Balan, Paresh Rawal and Arundhati Nag
Paa was something that nobody had ever seen in Bollywood and even though the film is close to a decade old now, we are unlikely to see it in future as well. In the film, Amitabh Bachchan is playing is playing a 12 year old boy called Auro, who is suffering from a disease called Progeria. So, even though he is just a 12 year old boy, he looks five times his actual age. Despite his condition, Auro is living a happy life with his mother Vidya (Vidya Balan), who is a gynaecologist by profession. Amol (Abhishek Bachchan), Auro’s father is an aspiring politician, who doesn’t know he even has a son due to the fact that Vidya conceals this from him. He meets him at an event at Auro’s school where he goes as the chief guest. During their meeting, Auro expresses his desire to visit the President’s House to Amol. So, Amol takes Auro along with him to visit the President’s house. The story takes a turn during Auro’s 13th Birthday. Auro tells Amol that he is son and wants to reunite his mother back with his father. But, Vidya doesn’t like the idea as she is still hurt by the fact that Amol tried to convince her about an abortion when they first found out about her pregnancy. Amol realises his mistake though, and proposes to Vidya, as he is still in love with her. He stays by Auro’s side when he finds out that Auro is his son. Auro’s health begins to deteriorate as he reaches his 13th birthday, his physical defects catching up. They perform their wedding rituals in the hospital in the presence of Auro. Even though Auro realises that he doesn’t have any time left he realises that he can die peacefully after re-uniting his parents. Paa showcased a father son relation in a way like never before. The most interesting part of the film was the roles of the father and son in the film were actually reversed. In an interview with a leading daily, R. Balki also spoke about how the idea for this role reversal came about. He said, “I had gone to Amitji’s office once and saw him talking to Abhishek. Abhishek was talking very wisely and Amitji was playing the fool. That made me think how a role reversal would look if Abhishek played Amitji’s father. I thought of making a fantasy film with this idea. But I also wondered if I could make a real story, if there was any medical condition that would help this story. I spoke to doctors and learnt about Progeria. Quite a few movies have been made on this so I did not want to make another one on it. Instead, I wanted to concentrate on the father-son relationship.”
Udaan (2010) Director: Vikramaditya Motwane Star Cast: Rajat Barmecha, Ronit Roy, Aayan Boradia, Ram Kapoor and Manjot Singh
The story of Udaan revolves around 17 year old boy called Rohan (Rajat Barmecha), who is expelled from the reputed Bishop Cotton School, Shimla along with three of his friends after they were caught watching an adult film by their warden. Rohan returns home to an abusive and an alcoholic father (named Bhairav) and a 6 year old half brother named Arjun. Once he’s back, his father takes complete charge of his life. He is forced to wake up every morning for a run and later work at his father’s metal factory and attend engineering class at the local university. His father’s disappointment in him takes a form of constant humiliation along with verbal as well as physical abuse. Rohan secretly has a passion for writing and wants to pursue a career in it, he simply doesn’t have the courage to confront his father about it. Rohan comes home one day to find his step brother Arjun seriously wounded. When Rohan asks his father about what happened to Arjun he tells him that Arjun fell down a flight of stairs. After admitting Arjun in the hospital, the father leaves for Kolkata for a business trip. Rohan learns from Arjun that his father was the reason for his condition and he lied to him about the stairs. After his father returns, he learns that Rohan has failed his engineering exams. Furious by this fact, he burns the diary in which Rohan had written all his poems and stories. He later informs his children that he will be marrying again and has decided to send Arjun to a boarding school and make Rohan a full time employee at the factory. Rohan manages to run away from the house that night and the next day also takes Arjun with him leaving a note behind for his father which said that if he came looking for them Rohan would inform the police. In the film, Bhairav treats both his kids like “projects”. He wants them to stay out of his life and he feels being a father means just to provide and ensure that his sons are disciplined. In a way, had the older brother not been subjected to his father’s behaviour he may not have turned out to be the man he became at the end of the movie. This film also makes us realise the value of our relationship with our father and cherish what we have. Udaan was truly an inspiring film which tells us to never let our dreams die and fight for them till we succeed. In all our lives there resides a Rohan and like Rohan all we need is to fight for what we desire. Although the film didn’t do well commercially, it managed to bag several awards. Udaan is extremely high on the emotional quotient. There is something in this film which we all can relate to and this is what makes it a must watch for everyone. And unlike most films, it also treated us to the dark truth that some fathers can be monsters too.
Wake Up Sid! (2009) Director: Ayan Mukerji Star Cast: Ranbir Kapoor, Konkona Sen Sharma, Anupam Kher, Supriya Pathak, Rahul Khanna and Shikha Talsania.
Wake Up Sid! was Ayan Mukerji’s first film as a director and with Ranbir Kapoor. The story of the film is about a young boy named Siddharth Mehra or Sid (Ranbir Kapoor). Sid is the son of a wealthy businessman Ram Mehra and his wife Sarita Mehra (Supriya Pathak). Living in Mumbai, Sid has always got what he wanted since he was a kid. He was never told NO for anything. So, he grows up to be a carefree and lazy spoilt brat. Since he has no interest in studies, his father forces him to work for his company. But, Sid is unable to give in to that as well. Things take a turn for the worse when he find out that he has failed his graduation. Unable to deal with his parents after his failure, he decides to leave his house and lives with his friend Aisha (Konkona Sen Sharma), who recently moved in from Kolkata. During his stay there, he realises that you have to work for everything in life and it just doesn’t get handed to you like it was until now. Sid always had a passion for photography, so, he decides to pursue a career in something that he will enjoy doing. With the help of Aisha, he gets a internship at a magazine as a photographer. Slowly but steadily, he realises the value of hardwork. He realises that all the things that his father kept telling him and which he found useless, were actually true. In the end, when he gets his first paycheck, he rushes to his father’s office. Upon seeing him, his father comes into tears after looking at this new avatar of his son and asks him to return home. Wake Up Sid! showed us that what our parents keep lecturing us might seem annoying but they do this because they want the best for us.
Waqt : The Race Against Time (2005) Director: Vipul Amrutlal Shah Star Cast: Amitabh Bachchan, Akshay Kumar, Priyanka Chopra, Shefali Shah and Boman Irani.
In this film, Akshay Kumar plays Aditya, a young man belonging to a wealthy family, who doesn’t have any interest in achieving something in his life. He gets married to his girlfriend Pooja (Priyanka Chopra), without informing anyone in his house. This makes his father, Ishwar (Amitabh Bachchan), realise that his son treats everything in his like a game and he needs to bring in some sense of responsibility into him. In a sudden turn of events, he kicks out Aditya from his house along with his wife and they are forced to live in the outhouse. Aditya eventually realises that he should take responsibility for himself and his wife, who is soon expecting a baby. He works hard and soon becomes a film star. He’s nursing resentment towards his father and refuses to patch up but all that goes away when he finds out that his father is suffering from cancer and was doing all this so that his son would grow up in real terms. He immediately rushes to his father and thanks him for all that he’s done in making him the man he was. Waqt taught us a very important message which is to cherish each moment that we have with our loved ones since we may never know when the time may run out. And also to not have ego clashes with our elders as you never know when they’ll take their last breath.
Patiala House (2011) Director: Nikhil Advani Star Cast: Akshay Kumar, Anushka Sharma, Rishi kapoor and Dimple Kapadia.
Patiala House is said to be loosely based on the life of English cricketer Monty Panesar. The concept of the film was conceived by Rohan Nanda, who is the son of popular Hindi novelist Gulshan Nanda. In the film, Akshay Kumar plays the character of Parghat Singh Kahlon who for strange reason is called Gattu. Gattu is living the life his father, Gurtej (Rishi Kapoor) chose for him. Gattu had always been good at cricket and he wanted to play the game at the highest level. Since he was living in England, his dad didn’t let him follow his passion as this would mean that Gattu would represent the English national team, a country in which he has always faced severe racism. His father even goes as far as telling him that he will commit suicide if Gattu ever touches the willow again. Years later, Gattu gets a chance to play for England one for time. His siblings and cousins convince him to give it a shot saying that, if he makes it to the national team, his father would realise that the world isn’t as racist as it used to be earlier. As he gets picked for England, the family tries to hide it from his father. But, Gurtej eventually finds out the truth and has a heart attack because of that. Gattu continues to follow his passion by playing cricket hoping that his father will change his opinion. Disappointed by this behaviour, Gurtej locks himself up in the house. At this moment, his wife shows up and tells him that all her life she sided with her husband but she didn’t realise she had the responsibilities towards her son as well. She turns on the T.V. wanting to see her son fulfil his dream. Gurtej watches with her and realises how badly he had treated his son. Later, Gurtej decides to go to the stadium to cheer his son who was having a bad game since his problems with his father was working on his mind. Upon seeing his father in the stands with a smile, Gattu is able to get his mind back into the game and manages to make England win the championship at the very last ball. Patiala House gave us a good glimpse of what Monty Panesar went through in his life before making the English cricket team. This film serves notice to all fathers, stating that they should let their children follow their dreams. Even though the career they choose might not be as stable as a 9 to 5 job it is important that they come to terms with what their children have chosen as their life’s calling.
