Hawa Jibril was a Somali activist and poet known for her buraanbur genre work. She used poetry as an instrument of change to challenge women’s oppression, colonialism, and bring attention to other societal issues. Some of her poems were compiled and translated to English in a collection titled And Then She Said, Saa Waxay Tiri. In 2007, her life and poetry were adapted into the play, Bridge of One Hair.
