BULLET HEIGHT – ‘NO ATONEMENT’

Many thanks to my friends Agnes, Saffire, Sinead and Vikki for linking up with Bullet Height for their recent 'Subspecies' tour.  As a result of this arrangement I was able to experience a wonderful performance by Jon Courtney and Sammi Doll when I travelled back to Glasgow to catch up with Courtesans.  Look elsewhere on my Tumblr page for a review of that that gig; for now my focus will be to look more closely at Bullet Height's 'No Atonement' album.

Bullet Height produce a sound that includes distinctly 'industrial' elements and echoes aspects of Propaganda's output in the 1980s, perhaps the only thing missing is the percussive beating of a hammer on an anvil.  The choice of petrol green vinyl for the 12 inch album seems quite appropriate,  I really must thank Sammi Doll for making sure to point out that the vinyl album included a CD copy; I had expressed my wish to purchase the vinyl from the merchandise stand, but really wanted to be able to listen whilst driving back home to the Scottish Borders, consequently I was tending towards getting the CD!  Thanks to her great sales technique I now have a wonderful coloured vinyl AND a CD to enjoy! 

The album starts with 'Fight Song'; well that's a good premise to start with given the fracturing of our first world society – everywhere we have looked recently we have been presented with division. Scottish Independence referendum, UK's EU referendum, USA Presidential election, UK General Election, Catalonia elections …......   so many instances of democracy highlighting a near 50/50 split in the opinion of those entitled to vote. The song's lyrics '”cold blooded” seem rather indicative of many contemporary big government policies!

Next, 'Bastion' starts with me expecting the first vocals to be “Ah-ah, ah! Ah-ah, ah! / We come from the land of the ice and snow / From the midnight sun, where the hot springs flow”, but that was only a brief slip as this is no re-working of 'Immigrant Song' – not that I would have a problem with that if it was as classy as the version done for the US re-make of the movie 'The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo' by Karen O, Trent Reznor & Atticus Ross.  Next the track progression leads on to 'Hold Together” with yet more intelligent and thought provoking lyrics that continue to have me considering the failures of mainstream politics, but maybe that's just a result of me being deluged by media commentary on the way the western world seems to be heading; “I love your dedication to the sinking ship”.

The multi-talented Berlin based duo of Jon Courtney and Sammi Doll have produced an incredibly engaging album which is tightly bound together by a distinctive production of truly cohesive diversity as evidenced by the remaining tracks.  There are some heavy beats intertwined with pulsating rhythms, alongside much lighter and more delicate passages to take you on an exciting journey.  In my youth my listening habits were very much album based and, along with others, would routinely listen to complete albums from side 1 track one to the last track on side 2, 4 or even occasionally 6.  Or possibly not so much in the case of the few triple albums in my collection as they tended to be records of live performances rather than the more carefully crafted 'album' experiences presented by studio recordings.  Driving to Edinburgh airport recently, I heard a lovingly produced, marvellous documentary on BBC Radio Scotland presented by Ian Rankin which looked back at Deacon Blue's debut album 'Raintown'.  This served to remind me of just how special it can be to listen to to an album in its entirety for start to finish as planned by the musicians and producers. Whilst never have forgotten how good many of the individual tracks on that album are, it took that radio show to remind me just how specially brilliant the complete album is.  Over recent years I have tended to drift away from listening to complete albums as I focussed on individual tracks that I wished to include in my radio shows. Alongside other tracks already mentioned, 'Wild Words' and 'Up To The Neck' would easily find a place in my playlists if were still able to be broadcasting. Thanks to Bullet Height making their tracks available on this beautiful vinyl package I have been seeking to get back to the 'whole album' experience, and what a wonderful compilation of tracks to do that with.  In conclusion, on the face of it, there may be little common ground between an album released in the 1980s by a Scottish band exploring themes pertinent to their contemporary society - “work, work, work; rain, rain, rain; home, home; home home”, and 21st century one from a Berlin based band who offer their thoughts about their lives;  but in my opinion 'No Atonement', despite not featuring guest appearances as 'Raintown' did,  could easily rank equally alongside 'Raintown'!  There may be countries and decades separating them, the general sound and tone may differ greatly, and the recording technology may have mutated from analogue to digital but I am convinced that they can be ranked equally, but I admit only the passage of time will provide a definitive answer for that.  If you believe me then I urge you to search it out and give your ears a treat; if you don't believe me then I urge you to search it out and give your ears a treat!
