Logan rolls his eyes, listening to the hushed conversation behind him. It’s getting near closing time at the Blue Moon Saloon and all he wants is to enjoy his glass of yakmel milk in peace. But he’s pretty sure he knows exactly who Pablo, Amirah, and Heidi are talking about in the next booth and therefore they have his complete attention.

Because, well, he’s part of that half the town.

It’s ridiculous, his crush. He knows it. Here he is, a grown man going on thirty, and he can’t stop thinking about a girl.

I don’t think I’ve posted a sketch piece in a while, or in general lately due to on going health problems. But, I wanted to post a sketch of one of my Builder’s for My Time at Sandrock!

This is Enid! Honestly she is more a ruin diver/monster Hunter than a builder in this run. Plus, I’m story boarding in my head that this version is a secret twin to Logan. Doesn’t make sense to the story but, I don’t care. It happened xD

im not saying that enid eats wednesday out before she workouts, but i am saying that when she leaves the house, enid is fuller and wednesday is more relaxed ;)

wednesday would be the miner and pvper and enjoy minecraft monsters and love wither roses and all the dark blocks she can find while enid is the builder and flower picker (and secret pvp god) and insist they settle down in flower forests and she'd make the best farms and have barns full of animals. they'd both be explorers together. wednesday would want horror mods to enhance the experience but enid wants quality of life mods like better animals and more farming options. they compromise by adding both*

Once Upon a Broken Heart / A Ballad of Never After

What can I say about this series except that it was so terribly disappointing? 

The most vexing part was that I actually found the first book decent - not very good, but it was decent, and I enjoyed it. Also, a lot of people said that this book was much better than Caraval, so I’m kind of scared of / morbidly fascinated by how bad Caraval must be now.

But anyway, that is beside the point. The first book is decent, with a very pretty writing style and a simple but engaging plot. The writing was very redolent of a fairy tale; it actually reminded me a little of Enid Blyton’s writing in her children's stories. However, it did give me the feeling that the story was a little vapid at times - maybe I just needed more grit, blood and strife, and less focus on true love ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ Not that there wasn’t any in the story, but the conflict rang kind of hollow, and I can’t exactly pinpoint why. I felt as if I were reading a series of tropes and mechanisms rather than an actual person going through all those things.

I must say that I disliked Evangeline, even in the first book. Here is a picture of her:

Before I elaborate on why she looks like that, let's start with the early parts of her I disliked. She was naïve and stupid, and had some real Main Character Syndrome (to be fair, she is the main character, but she's not supposed to know that). I cringed when she entered the North and immediately dreamed of marrying Prince Apollo, when she didn’t even know him yet, all for the expectations of a happy ending for herself. The secondhand embarrassment was at its peak when Apollo stepped towards the girl he would choose for the first dance, and she stepped forward, thinking he was about to choose her.

He didn’t.

I should probably talk about Jacks, who is arguably the heart of the story. Or the broken heart, because he, uh, is the Prince of Broken Hearts. 

I hate him. 

See, it's a pity because I actually liked him in the first book; his characterisation was intriguing, clever and to my taste. I thought he still had a lot of untapped potential, though, because I’d barely scratched the surface with him in Book 1. And with BookTok wanking him to oblivion - someone chose him over a gazillion book boyfriends - I had hopes that the sequel would blow my socks out of water. (Yes, yes, my misplaced faith in BookTok's credibility is my own vice)

Well, it did! Without a doubt, the sequel certainly blew all my hopes that this story would ever be decent 👍

Jacks is a coward. That’s all he ever is, and does. How does one do cowardice, you might ask? Well, you run and hurt the person you’re supposed to love, over and over again. Because he’s afraid of hurting Evangeline, he, uh, hurts her. Yes. And he spends the sequel being an ass - he flirts with girls frequently, while rudely barging in the moment Evangeline strikes up a conversation with another man. My teeth were grinding when she caught him in that deserted corridor with that girl, about to kiss her after spending the evening constantly sabotaging Evangeline’s attempts to get over him with other men.

If you don’t want her, fine. If you’re too much of a wuss, whatever. But what you don't do is stop her from starting something with someone else. You can’t have your cake and eat it, too.

And Evangeline? She actually started the book writing a letter to herself as a reminder that she must never fall for Jacks because he was dangerous. And how does she spend the last half of the book? Spoiler: Mooning over Jacks and acknowledging she’s fallen for him (which I was… very unconvinced about because the build-up to their romance SUCKED) and telling herself she was going to save him from his fear of love.

My dear, you are not Bob the Builder. No woman should be for any man. I think you should go fix your head first.

The last nail in the coffin for me was when Jacks revealed that all along, he was planning to turn back time to be with another girl (whom he didn't even love, but hoped to score a second chance with). 😂 Hilarious. You could turn back time to before the curse befell you, and you choose to go back... for some chick you didn't like? I get his theme is wanting to find true love, but I always found that so frivolous, and of course, so insulting to poor Evangeline. And after she “died” and he decided to turn back time to save her life - which, by the way, does not redeem anything for me. This girl practically risked her life to help you get the stones to help you find your true love. This is the least you can do, loser - he was such a rude ass to her to “protect her”. 

For once, Evangeline grew enough balls (it lasted for about as long as the dialogue went before she lapsed back into Bob-the-Builder mode again) to tell him this after he yelled at her:

Anyway, I have ranted enough about this book. I don’t want any part of it anymore, and will not be abusing myself by reading the next book. I MAY read Caraval, mainly because I want to see just how bad it is. And also, I want to be sure Stephanie Garber is really a lost cause before I write her off completely.

Kay: I got my security guard job through Lamorak. Apparently he just told the boss that I am big and intimidating and that got me my interview. Arthur hired me on the spot.

Kay: This building has never been safer. People say hello and goodbye to me. Dindrane brings me lunch. Life isn’t as bad as I thought it would be. Fuck what my parents told me.

Lancelot: Someone in the office set an alarm for 5pm every day, so now whenever it’s time to pack up and leave, YMCA plays very loudly.

Lancelot: It used to be just Arthur and Guin, but it’s gotten to the point that, whenever that song plays, everyone stops working, does the arm motions when the chorus hits, and we all leave on time because we’re out of work-mode. It’s resulted in no overtime, which the higher-ups like, but slower productivity, which they don’t like. But people are less stressed out, which tilts the balance more in our favour.

Guin: *passing by, pauses to listen*

Lancelot: I have no idea who started it, but ending every workday with the YMCA song is honestly brilliant and I wish I knew who to thank.

Guin: *smirks, winks at the camera, and leaves*

Tristan: Guinevere has a framed picture on her desk.

Tristan: It’s not of her husband. It’s not of her family. It’s not of her friends. It’s not even of her. It’s a picture of her pet lizard, Omega.

Tristan: I consider myself a powerful, go-getter type woman in the workplace, but that lady is fearless and is going places. There are some things in this world that just command instant respect from others, and apparently a framed picture of your pet lizard is one of them.

Smithy: Being part of the product design and manufacturing team is fun here because there’s three of us: me, Enid, and Dindrane. We all like listening to music while we work, so we alternate playlists every day.

Smithy: I’m the kind of guy who just makes one big playlist every time I hear or remember a song I like. I add it to the list. I’ve got hours of music at the ready and on my days, we never hear a song twice, unless the shuffle option glitches.

Smithy: But the other two? Very specific in their music tastes.

Smithy: Enid? He likes songs that sound upbeat but have downer lyrics that you don’t always notice at first. Things like Pumped Up Kicks, 99 Luftballons, Jump, and lots of songs by Third Eye Blind.

Smithy: Dindrane? Her playlist is entirely metal and alternative rock in every language that isn’t English. I can’t name a single song or band on that playlist. The one exception is Macarena. Dindrane knows the actual lyrics to the Macarena and that’s a power that no one should have.

Smithy: One thing’s for sure, though. None of us can resist singing along to Bohemian Rhapsody, even though none of us can sing.

Enid: I’m part of the production team, but I’m more of a designer than a builder. I help draw up plans, but when it comes to making the prototypes, it’s all my coworkers. On the flip side, I’m the main graphic designer for the branch. I make a lot of advertisement concepts and show them to the boss.

Enid: Here’s the thing... I got bored once and I made an alternative design one day with the slogan “Avalon Industries, Because Fuck You”. I accidentally showed that one to the boss and he laughed for five minutes straight and taped it to the fridge.

Enid: Now I always make two designs. One to submit, and one for the fridge. Sometimes it’s a dumb caption. Sometimes I badly photoshop a meme into the design. Once I just gave a blank paper with the words “Insert Ad Here”.

Enid: We have a wall dedicated to my art and I’m honestly more proud of that than any design the company actually uses.

Gaheris: I make sure to celebrate everyone’s birthday in some way or another. Not everyone wants to make a big fuss, so sometimes it’s as simple as leaving a snack or a brand new stapler or something on their desk.

Gaheris: Guin and Lancelot share a birthday, so that’s always a big celebration. I don’t think any work gets done that day. We’re all usually partied out by the time Arthur’s birthday rolls around a few days later. I still leave some cupcakes and fruit out on that day.

Gaheris: The thing is, when my birthday rolls around, I reap what I sow. Last time, my desk was covered in cake and flowers and cards and I couldn’t uncover the phone for a good twenty minutes.

Gaheris: As far as problems go, that’s a pretty neat problem to have.

Bors: Pros of living with one of your best friends who also works in the same place as you? Save money on carpooling. Save money on rent. When one of you is tired, the other can look after your son who always seems to have endless energy. Lunch is easier to plan. With all the money we save, Elyan goes to a good school and we can afford his extracurriculars.

Bors: Cons of living with Bedivere? I have to subsidise his coffee addiction. I don’t think he’s slept in a week and I keep waking up at 2am to the sound of him watching anime or let’s plays.

Merlina: It’s hard to say who scares me the most in this office. It’s not just basic intimidation either, even though Gawain and Kay have that down. I swear some people here are on a completely different level of existence.

Merlina: Once I saw Tristan get her performance review and I guess it said that she wasn’t showing the desired level of productivity or something because she sat down at her computer and worked without a break for the rest of the day. She didn’t stop for lunch, or to go to the bathroom. Just sit, work, YMCA and leave. She did three days worth of work in eight hours and I still don’t know how she found the strength to do that.

Merlina: Once Lamorak was struggling to find a mistake in his code that kept it from working. Bors looked at it and pointed out a missing indent in less than twenty seconds. I then watched him eat an entire burger in one bite and then fall asleep in his chair.

Merlina: And it’s not just my coworkers. I swear I saw one of the teen interns bend a spoon with his mind, and I’m pretty sure the other one is a pyromaniac who hides it really well.

Merlina: And Geraint... that guy is beyond understanding. He works in accounting but I’ve never seen him use a calculator. I don’t think he owns one. One day he deadass started reciting pi and he made it to maybe the 87th digit before he stopped, and that was because he had to cough.

Merlina: All of my coworkers scare me in different ways because I feel like one day I’ll come in and I’ll learn that someone’s mother is actually god and no one will bat an eye.

Merlina: ...I hope it’s Lancelot’s mother. She’s a saint.
