Let's be honest, folks: you've gone through like half a dozen socks in the last couple of months, haven't you? Yeah. Socks nowadays suck, and we've all got our reasons why. Blah blah globalization wah wah market won't reward quality woo woo creeping degradation of the moral universe. That's whining, and when I whined as a kid my mom locked me in the basement until I built an intricate machine to fix whatever I was whining about. Sometimes, if my uncle was already locked down there, she'd make me do it in the shed instead. Let's go to that shed right now and make a machine to make socks.
Winter is the hardest season for sock survival. For one thing, it's real dry. You get that rough skin, that static electricity, bristly boot soles all the time, and they fall apart on your feet. Big holes. I'm sure Big Sock gets a huge rise in their stocking price – get it? – around this time every year, as everyone needs new socks for Christmas or other seasonal/denominational shopping holidays. Fuck 'em, is what I say. We're going to fix their little red wagon.
Now, you might be unsurprised to hear that humanity already has a machine to make socks. We just don't put good materials in it. Unfortunately, I was never trained to make a machine that makes "good sock materials," whatever those are, so we're going to cut a corner here and slap a Chevy small-block V8 on an AliExpress "Full Automatic High Capacity Socks Machine Sock Knitting Machine for Sport," which I paid $39.95 for and got a 15% off coupon in exchange for giving it a five star review, no matter how many children it maims. Critically: it has free returns, so I can get that forty bucks back when we've made a year's supply of foot coverings.
The most important part of this job is building a good coupling. The massive amount of torque from the vee aight needs to be transferred into the sock-making machine, ideally without breaking it. Otherwise you're going to just spend more money on clutches, dowels, wrist pins and spring baskets than you would have on more socks. It helps if you've gone through an entire undergraduate materials-engineering degree, but for those of us who have gotten a restraining order from their local university, well, we have to do what works. Which is a truck clutch, tactically welded onto this sucker, using the display unit welder that they have at Princess Auto while the employees weren't looking.
Now, let's rev this piece of shit up and make us some socks.
Okay, things have not gone well. I admit that "roaring fire" is a big downside. Turns out that these things really need some yarn loaded into them first. If you just fire it dry, what it actually does is try to turn its own asshole inside out. The good news is that I can probably wear this prolapsed chunk of smouldering wiring harness as a sock. Seems pretty warm, I'm going to count this as a win.

That's it. I'm rewriting the Wade scene.
Sonic 3 spoilers
“The Master Emerald is being guarded by a fierce warrior, trained by my own hand!”
~~Meanwhile, in Green Hills~~
Wade Whipple, deputy sheriff of Green Hills, warrior-in-training to Knuckles, the last of the Echidna, and current bowling champion of the Green Hills bowling league, ages 35-50, stood at one end of a kitchen island, arms crossed over his chest.
At the other end of the island stood Callie MacPherson, head librarian of the Green Hills Public Library, personal tutor to Team Sonic, and current record holder for ‘most letters written to the editor of the town newspaper’, most in response to the minority of townspeople voicing a very loud outcry against the local alien children. (She just can’t help herself.) She also stood with her arms crossed.
They both stared down at the large green gemstone sitting on the middle of her island counter. Wade had brought it over, almost in a panic, as he asked for Callie’s help with it.
“Okay, so . . .” she began, her brows furrowed. “Walk me through it. One more time.”
Wade uncrossed his arms to rub the back of his neck. “Okay, so Knuckles left me in charge of the Master Emerald while they were off on their camping trip.”
“The same Master Emerald that can turn thought into reality, and what let Robotnik build that giant robot out of all those other vehicles that nearly destroyed the town, and the boys,” she said, keeping her eyes on the gem as though it would leap off the counter and attack.
“Yeah.”
“The same Master Emerald that let Sonic turn into . . . I dunno, some kinda glowy superhero.”
“Actually, I think that was something different? Like, there were other little gems inside and those changed him?”
She flicked her eyes up to him. “So what happened to those?”
He shrugged. “Knux said Sonic sent them away, but I’m a little fuzzy on the details.”
Her gaze fell back to the gem on her counter. “Uh huh.”
“Anyway, I was being a good guardian, like he wants me to be, never letting the thing outta my sight,” Wade said, gesturing with his hands as he spoke. “I kept it with me the whole time.”
“Right,” she said, before pointing to it. “So it’s in a bowl of rice because . . .”
“I dropped it in the shower.”
Her eyes flicked back to him. He held his hands up. “Hey, I wasn’t doing anything weird with it! It was just a little greasy after I took it to the movies. They really put a lot of butter on their popcorn.”
Callie rubbed her temples. “Wade, I really think Knux just wanted you to keep an eye on it, not date it.”
“He said never let it out of my sight, and that’s what I was doing,” Wade said, standing a little taller. “I wanna make him proud. And when it got wet, I remembered what I had to do with my phone when I dropped it in the punch bowl at the last Christmas party. So I put it in rice.”
She shook her head. “I really don’t think the principle’s the same, here.”
He shrugged. “He said it’s the key to ultimate power. And if something with power gets wet, that’s bad.”
Callie opened her mouth to say something else, but ultimately closed it again. She had no idea how magic gemstones from space worked, and letting it sit in rice seemed harmless enough. “Okay, so what do you need my help with? You seem to have it covered.”
He rubbed the back of his neck again. “I dunno . . . I guess I just wanted some company? Being a guardian to something so powerful and special is kind of a lonely job.”
She gave him a look. “Wade, they’ve been gone for like two days.”
Another shrug. “Two guardians are better than one, right?” She cocked an eyebrow, and he sighed. “Oh, c’mon, Cal. All we gotta do is make sure no bad guys show up to take the Emerald and used it in ways it was never intended. How hard is that?”
She was about to answer when a blast of wind hit them, and Sonic appeared in the kitchen. The two humans jumped in surprise, giving almost identical little yelps at the sudden appearance.
“Hey, Sonic!” Wade called, giving him a little wave. “Didn’t expect to see you here! How’s the camping trip? Were you surprised by your little b-earth-day thing?”
Sonic didn’t smile or wave back. He stared at the gemstone, brows pulled into a deep furrow. “I need the Master Emerald.”
Callie blinked, and exchanged a look with Wade. They’d never heard, or seen, Sonic look so serious. So angry.
“What’s going on?” Callie asked, moving closer to the boy. “What’s happened?”
He turned to look at her, and she stopped dead by the look on his face. “Tom’s hurt, the world’s in danger. I need the Emerald. Now.”
Alarm bells sounded in Callie’s head, and a quick glance at Wade showed he thought something was up, too. They both moved to block the Emerald from his view.
“Slow down,” Wade said, holding a hand out in a placating gesture. “What happened to Tom? Is Maddie okay? Where are Tails and Knuckles?”
Sonic turned to Wade, his lip curling in a snarl. “I don’t have time for this. Give me the Emerald.”
The deputy flinched at the hedgehog’s look and tone, which only further solidified the idea to Callie that something was very, very wrong.
“Sonic,” she said, trying to keep her voice gentle and even. “We want to help. But you have to tell us what’s going on.”
His snarl became more pronounced, and in a blast of wind, he’d zipped behind them and snatched the Emerald from its rice bed. He stopped at the kitchen door, looking back at them.
“No time.” Sonic lifted the Emerald above him and in a whirl of wind and flash of light, he transformed, his fur turning golden and eyes red. “I have to end this.”
And with that, he was gone, a strong burst of wind making Callie’s kitchen rattle and shake with its strength.
As her things began to settle, Callie looked over at Wade, who looked equally shaken.
“Think Knux’ll be mad at me?”
She stared at him for a moment, before looking back out where Sonic had gone.

On Christmas morning, a dance studio was destroyed in a 3-alarm fire in Los Alros, California. The roof collapsed and the building was completely destroyed.  https://www.nbcbayarea.com/news/local/los-altos-el-camino-fire/3406574/?amp
Bay Area Dance School is not only a small business and a dance studio but also a safe space. With this fire, dozens of children who dance at the studio on a daily basis are being uprooted from the space where they find community, build discipline, and practice their craft. Our dance community is heartbroken this Christmas.
With the dance competition season around the corner, it's crucial that the dancers are able to continue training. The funds from this GoFundMe will go towards solidifying a temporary space for classes and rehearsals, building a safe studio (sprung floors, Marley, barres, acro mats, mirrors, etc), and covering all other capital expenditures of running a dance studio.
The Bay Area Dance School teachers are truly wonderful dance instructors and the most kindhearted, incredible people. They need all the assistance to rebuild, and no amount is too small. Thank you for your support!

oh no! that is so very sad. thank you for sharing. What an awful thing to happen on Xmas. I can only be thankful no one was in the building.
Here is the gofundme link for anyone wanting to help or share:

bombay
when they say mumbai is a city, they are talking about the never-ending metro construction, the seemingly endless skyscrapers, the children who serve tea at the tapri and the elderly women who work day and night to feed their families. mumbai, the city, never ceases, even when it is almost cruel for it to be so unrelenting.
but when they say bombay is an emotion, they are talking about the city that has no niche. they are talking about the city that is the jack of all trades, from those who grew up here, to those who came with nothing but a bag full of hopes. when it is diwali, every corner of this city is adorned in lanterns and diyas, and when it is eid, it covers itself in green and white along with haji ali durgah, and when it is christmas, it congregates at mahim church to decks its streets with bells and holly. but amidst the chaos of the local trains and the city-wide holidays because of heavy rainfall, the tantalising smell of vada pav mixed in with cigarette smoke and the dangling legs of couples watching the sea sitting on the ledge of marine drive, there is a sense of belonging that connects every ‘dreamer’ that has accepted this city as their own.
every corner, every street and every building is a shrine to those who have stayed braved in this cruel city, so we may never forget those who didn’t quit. and then every corner, every street and every building is an eternal ode to all those that embraced the pandemonium in this city and became a part of it.

ArcSys Secret Santa Prompts (2 of 3)
My second contribution to the ArcSys Secret Santa for @cosmichorrorsarestillnicerthanme hosted by @xrd. Thankfully we'll be heading back to my personal specialty with this (very late) holiday prompt!
A day off and on the town with Tsubaki. Enjoying the sights as the holiday spirit gets into full swing.
The block is hitting hard ngl
I definitely went farther off prompt than I woulda wanted
~~~
It wasn't easy by any means to find free time, let alone any free time that matched up with Tsubaki. The military life tended to do that. It was one of the reasons why you looked forward to the holidays, you had the most consistent time off.
Not intending to waste this opportunity, you gave her an airship dock and a time to be there. Confused but happy to spend time with you nonetheless, she met up with you at the appropriate time and place, hopping onto the ship with you as it left, only to land in the Hierarchical City of Kazamotsu. The weather control system was set to allowing a light, comfortable snowfall to match the atmosphere and feeling of late December, days before Christmas.
You had told Tsubaki to come prepared for such weather, which she did in the form of a black sweater vest and cream colored scarf. The sun had already set by the time you arrived, giving way to the full moon and clear sky of stars shining (block this) overhead.
"S/o? What's the meaning of all this," Tsubaki inquired. Her breath came out in mist, evaporating into the evening air as quickly as it appeared. "It's a bit...spontaneous, especially for you."
Ever the conniving little shit, you saw the opportunity arise. "What? You not happy to see me or something?"
As predicted. Tsubaki's eyes went wide, stammering over her words due to her still relative relationship inexperience. "Uh... I-... no it's just..." The poor girl thought she had genuinely offended you somehow, until she finally took notice of the shit eating grin on your face. Upon realizing what happened, she crossed her arms and averted her gaze, pouting in a rather uncharacteristic fashion, though undoubtedly the cutest thing you've seen all month.
"Why do you have to insist on teasing me like that...?"
You hold back a laugh, although with limited success. "Sorry, sorry. Come on, let's get going."
Tsubaki looked back at you, a questioning look on her face. "Where are we even going, anyway?"
In response you give but a dismissive shrug. "Wherever the evening decides to take us. The important part is just being with you, right?"
Your statement, as simple and true as it was, made Tsubaki's heart race as she heard it. The two of you could never seem to find days off together, and as much as she yearned for it, she seemed to grow bashful at the thought now that she was faced with it. "I guess...I wouldn't mind that..."
While her guard was down you went in for your strike. Your hand reached to grab her, beginning to lead her through the city, at least after she recollected her composure, her face starting to turn as red as her hair.
The festive mood was now dialed up to the max in the Hierarchical City. Buildings everywhere were lined lights and tinsel from the low levels all the way up to even the NOL Branch at the city's peak. As well as that, you and Tsubaki were far from the only couple walking around. Locals and tourists from all over lined the streets, from couples holding hands to families with children.
As you two kept walking, at some point you looked back towards, Tsubaki. Her eyes were elsewhere other than you or the lights, piquing your curiosity. "Tsubaki? Is everything alright?"
Her head perked up as your voice snapped her out whatever train of thought she was going down and turned back to you, shaking her head as a way to reassure you and compose herself from being caught off guard like that. "Y-Yes, nothing's wrong."
You slightly raised a brow in suspicion. You knew better than to believe that. The poor girl really was too thoughtful for her own good, you knew she didn't want to worry you or make you uncomfortable with whatever was on her mind. You decided drop it, at least for now, and keep walking, not intent on wasting your precious time together.
Meanwhile with Tsubaki, she was trying to pull her gaze away from a family walking past you and her, with two young children in tow. Those four, along with the many others with children were bringing to mind visions she had of the future. A family like that was what she'd always wanted, yet almost everything seemed to be lined up specifically to rob her of that chance from before she was even born.
But she had the chance to change that now. You'd walked into her life and given it to her. Practically anytime she sees children out when she's with you, especially when they're with their parents, she can only think of a day where she can have children of her own, ones she can have with you, one way or another. The thought of that future she envisioned with you was enough to put her in a daydream-like stupor, which you had unknowingly snapped her out of.
Subconsciously, as if it was a deeply ingrained habit, Tsubaki hung onto your arm as you two walked. You assumed it was mostly because of the cold. While that was indeed part of it, she did crave that deeper closeness that she could only ever feel with you, a hope for the future filling her inside.
And that was what the spirit of the holidays was all about, was it not? Spending that time with the people you loved, learning to truly appreciate what life had given you. As far as Tsubaki was concerned, there wasn't anyone else she would rather have spent it with. As she looked up to the lights hung throughout Kazamotsu under the falling snow, for the first time in a while, she felt at peace.
Thirumazhisai: The Perfect Destination for Gated Community Living
Located in the western part of Chennai, Thirumazhisai is a picturesque suburb that’s quickly becoming a hotspot for homebuyers. Known for its excellent connectivity, thriving social infrastructure, and lush green surroundings, this locality offers a perfect blend of convenience and tranquility. For those seeking a balanced lifestyle, Thirumazhisai is an ideal choice. Leading real estate developers have recognized its potential and are building premium gated communities here, designed to cater to the needs of modern homebuyers. Let’s dive into what makes Thirumazhisai and its gated communities so special.
1. Seamless Connectivity
Thirumazhisai’s strategic location ensures that residents enjoy easy access to all parts of the city and beyond. Key highways like the Chennai-Bangalore Highway (NH 48), Poonamallee High Road (NH 4), and Chennai-Tirupati Highway (NH 205) pass through this area, making commuting a breeze. The Outer Ring Road further enhances connectivity to other parts of Chennai.
The upcoming Metro Phase II project is set to make things even better. The proposed extension of the Lighthouse-Poonamallee corridor will include 19 elevated stations, connecting Thirumazhisai to Sriperumbudur and Parandur. Additionally, the soon-to-be-inaugurated Hi-Tech Kuthambakkam Bus Terminus will offer state-of-the-art facilities, making transportation more efficient and convenient for residents.
2. Quality Education at Your Doorstep
For families, access to good schools and colleges is a top priority. Thirumazhisai delivers on this front with several reputed educational institutions in the vicinity. Some gated communities even have CBSE schools within their premises, ensuring that children don’t have to travel far for quality education. This not only saves time but also provides a safe and secure environment for young learners.
3. Access to Top-Notch Healthcare
Healthcare is a critical factor when choosing a place to live, and Thirumazhisai doesn’t disappoint. The area is home to renowned hospitals like Sri Ramachandra Medical Centre and Saveetha Medical College, both equipped with advanced facilities and expert medical professionals. Additionally, many gated communities have resident forums, service apps, and WhatsApp groups that connect residents with doctors and helpers during emergencies. This is especially beneficial for families with children or senior citizens, as immediate assistance is always within reach.
4. Safety and Security
One of the standout features of gated communities in Thirumazhisai is their focus on safety. These communities are equipped with robust security measures, including:
24/7 Security Guards: Trained personnel monitor entry and exit points at all times.
CCTV Surveillance: Key areas of the community are under constant watch.
Visitor Management Systems: Visitors are screened and logged, ensuring only authorized individuals enter the premises.
These measures create a safe environment for residents, particularly for children and seniors, giving families peace of mind.
5. A Conducive and Inclusive Environment
Modern gated communities in Thirumazhisai are designed to foster a sense of belonging and inclusivity. Residents have access to apps like NoBrokerHood and MyGate, which offer a range of services — from home cleaning to beauty treatments — at the touch of a button. These conveniences make daily life easier and more enjoyable.
Community celebrations during festivals like Diwali, Pongal, Christmas, and New Year bring residents together, creating a vibrant and inclusive atmosphere. Children grow up appreciating diversity, while adults build lasting friendships with their neighbors.
6. A Green and Serene Lifestyle
Thirumazhisai’s natural beauty is one of its biggest draws. The area is surrounded by greenery, offering a peaceful and pollution-free environment. Gated communities here are designed to complement this setting, with landscaped gardens, walking trails, and open spaces that encourage residents to connect with nature.
Why Thirumazhisai is a Smart Choice
Thirumazhisai is more than just a residential locality — it’s a thriving hub with immense growth potential. The combination of industrial development, infrastructure upgrades, and a focus on holistic living makes it an attractive destination for both homebuyers and investors.
Premium gated communities in Thirumazhisai offer a lifestyle that’s hard to match. With world-class amenities, top-tier security, and a strong sense of community, these apartments provide the perfect setting for happy and fulfilling lives. Whether you’re looking for a peaceful retreat or a vibrant community, Thirumazhisai has something for everyone.
Historical Significance
The name "This Is The Place" originates from July 24, 1847, when Brigham Young, the leader of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints (LDS Church), arrived in the Salt Lake Valley and declared, "This is the place." This moment marked the end of the Mormon pioneers' treacherous journey across the western frontier and the beginning of their settlement in Utah.
In 1917, the This Is The Place Monument was erected to commemorate this significant event. Over the years, the park has expanded to become a full-scale living history museum, celebrating the legacy of Utah’s pioneers and early settlers.
The Knife Before Christmas (A Fixer-Upper Mystery) Cozy Mystery 11th in Series Setting - California Publisher ‏ : ‎ Berkley (October 22, 2024) Hardcover ‏ : ‎ 288 pages ISBN-10 ‏ : ‎ 059363764X ISBN-13 ‏ : ‎ 978-0593637647 Kindle ASIN ‏ : ‎ B0CRTQTK3Y Audiobook ASIN : B0DK62Y7YJ Contractor Shannon Hammer hopes for a peaceful Christmas with her fiancé, Mac, until murder throws a wrench in her holiday plans in a brand-new installment of the USA Today bestselling Fixer-Upper Mystery Series. Christmas has come to Lighthouse Cove, but business hasn’t slowed down for Shannon Hammer. She’s been contracted to renovate a local hotel owned by the Garrisons, a family that’s so devoted to the holidays they serve a seven-course dinner every night from Thanksgiving through Christmas. Last year’s festivities featured a train that transported guests around the breathtaking Cliffside property. This year, Shannon and her crew have been commissioned to build a Victorian-style carnival midway with games and prizes galore. Everyone in town loves the hotel’s spirit, except the Garrisons’ children and their spouses, who are hum-bugged by the money being wasted on holiday cheer while their inheritance goes up the chimney. Things turn nasty when a mischief-maker close to the family is found dead. It’s up to Shannon and Mac to catch a sinister Scrooge before all of Lighthouse Cove receives coal for Christmas. Dollycas's Thoughts The Garrisons own the local Cliffside Hotel in Lighthouse Cove. Shannon Hammer and her crew have renovated several parts of it. The family loves the holidays and always plans something special for the days leading up to Christmas. They serve a seven-course dinner each night and getting a reservation is darn hard. They also have fun on the grounds of the hotel. Last year a train took guests on a tour of the beautiful Cliffside estate. This year the Garrisons have asked Shannon and her team to design and build a Victorian-style carnival midway with games and tons of prizes. They have an extraordinary ride that needs to be included and installed in the design. Things seem merry and bright until the Garrisons’ children and their spouses have some concerns about the money being spent on the carnival. They would rather have the cash stashed away for them to inherit. But things take a deadly turn when a dead body is found in the basement. Shannon and Mac are soon on the trail to find out who was at the top of Santa's naughty list and would be receiving their lump of coal in jail. ____ Christmas in Lighthouse Cove - sign me up - I am all in! This being the 11th installment of the Fixer-Upper Mysteries the characters are like old friends. I worked in home construction for a couple of years so I enjoy following Shannon around to all her job sites and her creative ability to breathe new life into old homes. She has an amazing crew that can take her ideas and run with them. I love it when she pulls out her pink toolbox and tools and works right alongside them. Shannon and Mac are a perfect match and an awesome sleuthing team. But what I love most about Shannon and Mac is their empathy and huge caring hearts. Family, friend, or stranger - if someone needs help, they will go above and beyond to help the person in any way they can. The Garrisons are an interesting family. Bill and Lilian are the 3rd generation to own the hotel and they have steadily made improvements to the place. With the exception of their son, Logan, all of their children and their spouses live and work at the Cliffside. Like most families, they have their ups and downs. Bill and Lilian had been Shannon and Chloe's parent's best friends. So much so that when their mother passed away Lillian became a surrogate mother to the girls. Featuring this family in this story was grand for many reasons sans the murder. Ms. Carlisle's detailed descriptions were wonderful. She created distinct images in my mind of the entire hotel and its new "Fun Zone". You could feel the joy Bill had when his dream space came to life as well as all the people that visited the new attraction. I appreciated the time the author took to share all the holiday planning and interactions before she delved into a compelling mystery. The victim was not a nice person but those around tolerated them. Anyone could have snapped and killed them. That means the suspect list is a long one. Shannon and Mac have to work through them all. After some well-placed twists, a second death actually provides clues that could lead to the killer. Shannon has her ah-ha moment at what could have been a very inopportune time but she gets help from a surprising person until the calvary shows up to drag the guilty party away. I did enjoy the subplot at the Veterans' Village and the three porch pirates. Good people do good things to help people in need. This "village" has been a wonderful place for Lighthouse Cove and veterans with homes, education, jobs, and more. Shannon has a fantastic idea to light the place up for Christmas to bring awareness to visitors and joy and celebration for the residents. It is a special place for both Shannon and Mac and I love that we get to tag along when they visit. The Knife Before Christmas is a festive whodunit with tons of good holiday feels. I had a delightful time in Lighthouse Cove with genuine and engaging characters who loved Christmas just as much as I do. The mystery was very well-plotted so that the community and family holiday spirit shines as the killer is brought to justice. It was "quite a Christmas" including a Christmas miracle or two. I voluntarily reviewed an Advance Reader Copy. This does not affect my opinion of the book or the content of my review. Thank you to the author, publisher, and NetGalley for providing me with an ARC. Brooksville, Florida
Tumblr media
Quick Brooksville, Florida History Brooksville, Florida was originally known as Melendez and then Benton. Incorporated in 1856, it is a wonderful city featuring a hilly terrain that ranges in elevation from 175 to 274 feet. There is a long history of successful planters, growers, and cattlemen in and around Brooksville. Its southern background is reflected in its name, honoring South Carolina Congressman Preston Brooks who is best noted for hitting abolitionist Senator Charles Sumner on the head with his cane. Brooksville's downtown area features the iconic Hernando Courthouse, along with great shopping in unique stores featuring everything from antiques, outfits, high-end resale, stationery, flowers and bric-a-brac to formal gowns – and stationery. Some streets still show the Augusta bricks laid by hand. Florida Wildlife Corridor Foundation mural painted by Justin Alsedek is on Brooksville's City Hall building, which houses a free art gallery upstairs. Things to Do in Brooksville, Florida There are several downtown restaurants and coffee shops, along with legal and banking offices, a library, and more than one park. Brooksville has been working hard to revive its downtown to attract more visitors and became a Florida Main Street community in 2016. For those looking for things to do in Brooksville, the Main Street organization holds several events in Brooksville's downtown area as well as farmers and artist markets, and a simply magical holiday celebration of all things Christmas during December with everything from musical trees to performing artists, decorations galore and horse-drawn carriage rides.  Local art is displayed in several downtown businesses and buildings, as well as murals painted throughout the downtown area. A walking tour map of the downtown murals may be found here. The Brooksville City Hall building houses a changing art exhibit in Gallery 201, and all are welcome. There is no charge. The architecture is interesting in several buildings and when looking for things to do in Brooksville, Florida, a wonderful historic walking tour can be had for the simple act of following the map here. If you would like more information about each building on the historic tour, download the complete guide here. (Please note that the Hernando Chamber of Commerce has moved to Brooksville's Tampa Bay Regional Airport. The guide is dated, but the history and map are accurate.) Historic homes are throughout the downtown area and a tour has been mapped out. There are two B & Bs, including this one, known as the Mirador. Another popular thing to do in Brooksville, Florida, is to visit the May Stringer Museum, located at 600 West Jefferson. Housed in the 1850 Stringer House, a Queen Anne masterpiece with a four-story tower, this historic building is reputed to be haunted. There are daily tours Tuesday - Saturday led by docents and the price of admission is only $10 for adults, $5 for children, free for those under 6 years of age, but the exhibits seem more adult-friendly. F. L. Stringer was a State Senator and judge. With thousands of historic artifacts and regular tours, it commemorates the Civil War era and provides a glimpse at the lifestyle and relics of a gone but not forgotten segment of American history. Ghost tours are held on Friday and Saturday nights by reservation. The May Stringer House houses a historical museum that is well worth a tour in Brooksville. It is said to be haunted. In addition to the May Stringer house there is a historic train depot to visit. Next to the historic train depot museum is a one-room schoolhouse to visit on Russell Street. Both of these museums are adjacent to Russell Street Park which has the Good Neighbor Trail running through it. The Good Neighbor Trail is a paved, multiuse trail that runs about 10.3 miles to connect with the Withlacoochee State Trail. Continue east to find another wonderful shopping area, featuring the Hawkins House and the Florida Cracker Trading Company and Tap Room. There is even an old-fashioned Coney Island where it is rumored that Elvis Presley may have eaten many years ago with an ice cream shop in front. The Florida Mermaid Trail In 2020, a Mermaid Trail was created in downtown Brooksville, which is part treasure hunt and part walking tour. It is an easy activity for one or more to get out and enjoy the historic brick streets and well-kept homes and businesses. Each February, a Mermaid Festival is held in Hernando Park, where residents and visitors compete for the best-dressed mermaids, with and without their pets, and meet the real mermaids of Weeki Wachee Springs State Park. The maps for the Mermaid Trail can be found at Florida's Adventure Coast Visitor Center, adjacent to the park. Expanding Beyond Brooksville’s City Limits You may want to travel north on US 41 to visit the historic Chinsegut Hill Historic Site and rediscover the magic that caused its last private owners to name it Chinsegut, meaning, “a place where lost things are found.” Learn their story of courage and civil rights for all, as well as a historic timeline of occupation during significant national events. And it's beautiful and somewhat magical. *Please note that Chinsegut Hill Museum is managed by the Tampa Bay History Center and is open on weekends for tours, as well as some outdoor events on select weekdays. An Emancipation Celebration is held in May. Originally constructed in the early 1800s, and then added onto by subsequent owners, the Chinsegut Manor House was renovated in 2013-2014 and has been restored to the splendor of its glory days. Image by Diane Bedard. Don't forget the Ice Cream Head back south on U.S. 41 and then travel east on S.R. 50/U.S. 98. Make a right on Spring Lake Highway (541) and follow it to the top of the hill. On the right is Boyett’s Grove Citrus and Timeless Attraction. Here you will find a wonderful animal park where you can feed the animals, a dinosaur cave, taxidermy museum, birds, snakes, an alligator named, "Elvis", and more. A putt-putt golf course winds through part of this fun-filled tourist trap. There’s even a snack bar, ice cream parlor, and an old-fashioned Florida gift shop! It’s one of my favorite places on the Nature Coast. Read the full article
Elizabeth Ann Bond Sczempka, Class of 1977
Someone San Diego Should Know: Beth Sczempka
Volunteer extraordinaire built a hairstyling school in Tijuana
Thirteen years ago, Beth Sczempka, her husband Joe and their three teenaged children traveled to Tijuana to help build a house for a needy family. They ended up building more than a house.
During a break from mixing cement, Beth learned that Build A Miracle, the San Diego nonprofit sponsoring the project, was expanding into job-training programs and wanted to create a hairstyling school. But the group was having difficulty.
They knew Beth was a hairstylist and asked her for advice. Instead of giving advice, Beth agreed to lead the effort for Build A Miracle.
Two months later, Bloom Beauty Academy opened in the El Florido neighborhood of Tijuana with the first class of eight students.
Today, the Academy teaches six-month courses that include hairstyling, nails, makeup and skin care. Each course has 60 to 90 students. About 500 students have completed courses.
The academy employs local hairstylists as teachers, including some graduates. The director is a single mother who was in the first class.
Beth regularly visits the Academy to teach while maintaining a salon in Rancho Penasquitos.
She has developed close bonds with many of the students.
“We’ve had girls who left abusive relationships and pretty horrible situations,” Beth said. “Many don’t have anything beyond a third-grade education. But they don’t need to even read or write to learn to use their hands in an artistic way.
“The academy gives people the chance to have dreams, goals, pride and a future of independence. It’s a beautiful thing to see.”
Every six months, course graduation ceremonies are held that attract hundreds of families and friends celebrating what is for many students the biggest accomplishment of their lives.
“A lot of tears and celebration,” Beth said. “I cry at every graduation. I view these women as family.”
After graduation, students serve customers at home, often shacks without floors, flea markets or at the clients’ homes.
Beth, who also spent a month in Cambodia teaching hairstyling to trafficking victims, has never been paid.
“Helping people is the best gift for me,” she said. “It feels so good.”
Born in 1958 and raised in San Diego, from an early age Beth enjoyed volunteering and helping people, something she attributes to her mother who was an incessant volunteer.
“Mom was an incredibly giving person,” Beth said. “She taught me unconditional love and the value of helping others. She would say, ‘always treat every person with respect and put yourself in their shoes.’”
Growing up in east San Diego, Beth attended Crawford High School where she regularly volunteered for school activities. In her senior year, she volunteered for the two-person school mascot costume — a horse.
“I was the back half if you must know.”
That earned her an invitation to perform in the Disneyland Christmas parade. A few years later, she was selected to portray Snow White. There, she met Joe, who portrayed Prince Charming. They have since been married 39 years.
Their storybook beginning continued as they created a family dedicated to helping others.
Fifteen years ago, their son questioned why the family gave each other Christmas presents since there are so many families in need. Ever since, family members no longer receive presents (except for the three young grandchildren) and, instead, give presents to underprivileged families.
“A manager for low-income apartment buildings helps us find families each year and makes a list of gifts for the parents and children,” Beth said. “Each family member gets one gift. I post on Facebook and Nextdoor inviting people to participate. We get many participants.
“Close to Christmas, we go into their apartments and set up gifts, sometimes decorations and a Christmas tree.”
The family’s giving nature never stops as they continue to help build houses in Mexico. “I’ve mixed a lot of cement, hung drywall and painted,” Beth said. “I’ve attended over 75 house dedications.”
As for the Bloom Beauty Academy, there are plans to expand and include a barber course.
“I will never walk away [from the academy],” she said. “You never walk away from family.” *Reposted article from the UT by Jan Goldsmith on February 23, 2024
During the afternoon, children come together for planned experiences which include both indoor and outdoor programs. During this time, they can develop their independence and learn through play and discovery with other children.
At the end of the day, the children gather for afternoon tea, which is a great opportunity for them to share their achievements with their families. They can also eat lunch with their family and join in on community excursion, if they wish.
The Educators at Woodlands are passionate about the education and care of children and they have been specifically trained to implement the Guardian Programs and Practices. The Educators are constantly looking for opportunities to support the children’s interests, strengths and abilities, as well as developing their knowledge and understanding of different cultures. The centre has a dedicated Educational Leader and Educators are supported with ongoing professional development opportunities.
Our dedicated team of Academy of Early Education caring educators is committed to unlocking the full potential of every child, guiding them on a journey of exploration and discovery. With a perfect blend of structured activities and creative play, we encourage children to develop critical skills while having fun and building lasting friendships.
EXPLANATION IN ENGLISH OF THE MONUMENTS 2024
EXPLANATION IN ENGLISH OF THE BIG MONUMENT 2024
MOTTO: NO MATTER HOW MUCH THE WIND BLOWS
CENTRAL BODY AND FINISH
We have named the woman holding the Wind Rose María Rosa and she criticizes the bad smell that the Parc Sagunt orange juice factory produces when a little wind blows.
The monument is crowned by the god Eolo, god of the wind, whom the residents of the Churruca neighborhood pray to throw away the water tank so that they do not have to pay for the dismantling works, as the city council has condemned them to do.
The pirate who sails over the monunent is the pirate who does business with Christmas in our town, putting up terrible lighting and organizing some pathetic senseless Three Wise Men parade.
Also in the upper part of the Falla monument we find an inventor who has devised a device to fly and thus be able to go to Valencia, since the Port, despite being a large town, has a terrible public transport connection with the Valencian capital. Saturated buses, poor service and no plans for a suburban train or metro line to be built.
TRAMONTANA WIND (NORTH)
Don Quixote fights against the power who destroy our beaches and against those who oppose making the Malecón public and green. This Don Quixote demands the defense of the territory to live in a more sustainable place, or we will have to eat stones and asphalt.
MISTRAL WIND (NORTHWEST)
In this scene the prevailing dirt throughout the city is criticized, the lack of civility of the dog owners, the garbage and remains that people throw without control all over the place and the poor service provided by the SAG, despite the large amount of money that the city council puts into that public company.
WEST WIND (WEST)
This scene is dedicated to the Fallas world. Specifically, the madness of celebrating the exaltation of the Falleras Mayores of Sagunto in the month of July and in the afternoon, with very high temperatures, and all because the members of the Board already had the dinner booked. It is a criticism of the constant changes in the Fallas regulations, a regulation that has been modified again and in a very biased way by those who intend to take power from the Board soon.
EAST WIND (EAST)
In this scene, the municipal madness of putting bike lanes throughout the city is criticized, even sacrificing 9th October avenue, the most commercial in the Port, against the criteria of the merchants.
LEBECHE WIND (SOUTHWEST)
It is a criticism of the constant attacks on public education by the Valencian government of PP-VOX and the danger posed by the construction of the FP center focused on the Gigafactory.
SIROCO WIND (SOUTHEAST)
In this scene the latest events in local politics are reviewed, with the great victory of the PSOE and how quickly they bought the Esquerra Unida councilor, with a salary increase included for all the members of the new local government.
OYSTER WIND (SOUTH)
This scene, in which the ninot that we have presented for the exhibition of the pardoned “ninot” is located, is a tribute to all the AHM workers, on the 40th anniversary of the closure of the factory and the great mobilization of workers' struggle that took place in the municipality to avoid the tragic outcome.
EXPLANATION IN ENGLISH OF THE CHILDREN'S MONUMENT 2024
MOTTO: DON'T LET THE STARS GO OUT
In the central body of the infant falla we find a boat, which, apparently, sails without a destination, but which is a tribute to older people. We find a father with his son, who tells him about the problems that the elderly have in our city: they do not have entertainment venues and there are no longer places to have dances on the weekends for them, since the Casino is closed for construction and the Sanatorium hall was closed too.
The Falla Staircase is a criticism of the lack of accessibility of public buildings for older people and all people with mobility difficulties.
The fallera moon serves to criticize how little care is taken of the elderly by the city council when holidays come and that in summer, during the patron saint's festivities, they only offer them a simple snack.
Also in the children's falla, the gym equipment that proliferates throughout the parks is criticized and that end up rusting or broken due to acts of vandalism.
The monument criticizes the lack of a center for the elderly, the CEAM, promised by all politicians but which is a paralyzed project and which has to be carried out in the old factory Commissary. Therefore, the ruling calls for taking this into account and providing decent facilities and services for the elderly in our municipality.
Finally, the ruling also criticizes banks and the poor treatment they give to older people, despite the fact that they make a lot of money at the expense of the savings of their clients, whom they mistreat on many occasions.
Apart from his work and the veteran's affairs, Bird was a man of strong faith and an active member of the United Methodist Church. A devoted husband, father, and grandfather, he was thoughtful, caring, and precise. He enjoyed spending time outdoors, whether bicycling through Rock Creek Park as a boy or camping with his children and grandchildren. Stalkeyes Headcanons: The Corduroy Family (and some Gravity Falls history)
Tumblr media
The Corduroys are one of Gravity Falls' oldest families, dating almost back to its founding. Scottish frontiersmen Archibald and Constantine Corduroy first made the journey all the way across North America to participate in the California Gold Rush of the 1840s, but when they arrived they heard about 'naturally-occurring flannel' being discovered in Gravity Falls, Oregon, and decided to hunt down plaidypi instead. This was the much less-famous 'Flannel Rush'.
Some time after Archibald's untimely death in 1862, his eldest daughter Howardine - who'd previously left town to fight for the Union in the civil war (disguised as a man, during which time she became known as 'The Bounstown Butcherjack' after singlehandedly taking down two-dozen Confederate cavalrymen with only seven bullets, an axe and a wooden rocking-horse) and later became a travelling bounty hunter and carbonated lemonade saleslady in the old west - returned home, and claimed that the so-called town founder, Nathaniel Northwest, was a fraud. According to her, Nathaniel's true identity was town waste-shoveller Amos Snorkle, a man with no known friends, family, or record of ever existing. She also claimed that the town's memories had been tampered with by a coven of witches on orders of the U.S. Government, who also provided 'Nathaniel' with his fortune.
Howardine was later elected mayor, defeating Nathaniel. She ratified Quentin Trembley's various laws and introduced the 'Election Eagle', based on her belief that eagles could sense evil. She also established the town library, banned the presence of horses within town limits for unknown reasons, and helped spread the high-five to Canada and eventually Europe.
Her sister-in-law, Prudence Handforth, is better known today as the 'Hand Witch'. At the time, she was a young witch's apprentice who hadn't yet achieved immortality. She lost her legs in a 'magic pink exploding needle-related accident' and replaced them with arms.
Her son Cutter once frolicked freely in the woods and had relationships (yes, that kind) with many paranormal denizens, but when his affairs were discovered, his entire family line was cursed and he became deeply paranoid. He began the tradition of training for the apocalypse instead of celebrating Christmas - at the time, WWI was raging, and he believed that the Kaiser was about to invade with flying, musket-wielding goblins. He also believed the newly-formed Scouting movement was a British plot to take back their lost colonies and formed the Skirmishers in response. The Skirmishers lasted until the mid-70s, when Auldman Northwest started a moral panic about 'spreading superstition' and had them disbanded.
His son Valentine later became a bomber pilot in WWII, during which time he suffered a freak accident which crash-landed him in Germany. He blamed it on gremlins and swore to never fly again. He later became a hippie and formed a rivalry with then-mayor Befufflefumpter, allegedly over the latter's ties to the Northwest family and destruction of crocodile habitats to build 'needless water towers'. As of 2012, he's still alive, aged 101. He sells 'interesting mushrooms'.
Meanwhile, Cutter's daughter Earnestine experienced great turmoil. Her husband Ortwin and three of her four children all died unexpectedly - Ortwin apparently 'tripped and accidentally tied a sack around his head' while out walking with the Northwest patriach, Bullhorn died in a logging accident and Harper & Hadley died in a plane crash when attempting to flee to Scotland. Her last surviving child, Haven, attributed this to the 'family curse' and moved to another town, marrying into a local family called the Tweeds. The Tweed family are even more superstitious than their cousins in Gravity Falls, but are also extremely insular, untrusting, and are basically horror movie hillbillies. Nevertheless, they run a logging camp and invite the Corduroys over every year, even though no-one really wants to see them.
Valentine's son, Manly Dan Sr., married Scarlett MecPenton, one of the descendants of Fertilia Mecc. They lived in a polyamorous relationship with an artist called 'Dandy' Dave Denim, who was legally an 'adopted uncle'. Unfortunately, the 'curse' struck again - Dan's son Hunter died in a logging accident at 20, and his daughter Bixby struggled with lung cancer for her whole life, passing away at 35. One of his sons, Noah, is a Vietnamese boy who was rescued from a shipwreck in the midst of the 1975 Vietnam refugee crisis. He latched onto a plank of wood for a whole day before being found. He accidentally gave his niece Wendy mild hydrophobia (that's why she never goes on fishing trips with the others, and her first thought to defeat the Shapeshifter is 'water'. The pool doesn't count, she can actually see the bottom. :V)
Dan Sr's youngest daughter - and Wendy's aunt - Judy Corduroy married local lizard farmer and son of the suspected mastermind of the Great Geese Rampage of '83, Gosling Grendinator. Once an aspiring hockey player, she later became the town therapist, starting post-Weirdmageddon 'Friday Night Therapy' sessions.
Another son, Chuck, the 'family nerd', went on to become the bassist for a jazz band called The Chucks, where every member is called Chuck (and he received the nickname 'Woodchuck' to mark him out). He's everyone's favourite uncle, even though he's a hipster dork with a silly moustache. The band has played at every Woodstick festival since 2009.
Manly Dan Jr. - later known simply as Manly Dan (with his father becoming 'original Manly Dan') dated stranded French-Canadian ex-film crew tech Amanda Beaulieu for five years before they married in 1990. After she miscarried her first child - believed to be yet another victim of the 'curse' - she was so shaken that they wouldn't try again until 1996, the year the child who would later take the name Wendy was born.
In their old age, as of 2012, Dan Sr., Scarlett and Valentine live in a 'retirement cabin' next-door to the Valentino residence (and yes, they've heard all the jokes about old people living next-door to cemeteries, if you make one then Scarlett will hit you in the face with a broom). Wendy went to them first once Weirdmageddon rolled around. They managed to hold out for a day and a half against the Weirdness onslaught. Probably because they have the most guns out of anyone in town. Wendy half-suspected those federal agents from earlier in the summer had arrived to arrest her grandparents for arms trafficking.
Dipper did meet Wendy's brothers, he just didn't really get along with them - and this didn't bother him because he couldn't care less about making friends his own age. Kevin was basically just the stereotypical 10/11-year-old boy from the early 2010s - loud, hyperactive, obsessed with first-person shooters and 'those dumb screamo videos', thinks his tastes are the only true and correct tastes, can barely go five minutes without trying to wind Dipper up about his friendship with his big sister. According to Wendy, he's also gay.
He had better luck with Marcus, because he's older and actually likes to read, until Marcus tried to engage him in a 'philosophy debate' and spouted off mostly nonsense he'd picked up from his uncle. He always did admire both his parents and aspired to be like his dad, but was always a little less hyper than everyone else. Might also be gay.
And as for Gus, Dipper admittedly didn't make an effort to talk to him because he's only six, but Gus kinda creeped him out. He never said a word and kept giving him an evil glare. Maybe he was being overprotective towards his big sister? Wendy jokes that Gus is gonna grow up to be some kind of shadow government SpecOps agent, or a criminal mastermind.
(Credit goes to @mother-ofthe-universe for Bixby and Noah, I kinda absorbed them into this :V)
Oh my god ya’ll are actually making this a good movie. @nobody33333333 @mvshortcut
Tumblr media Tumblr media
The organization Curtain is trying to takeover is an old historical school that Constance just so happens to go to.
Constance is a strange but secretly good hearted little girl who has trouble making friends and finding happiness. BUT she does find joy in learning. Sticky also happens to be at this school but he works at a teacher’s assistant for Ms.Perumal. He also volunteers at the local nursing home for bingo and game nights. He’s known around town for being a board game and trivia champ. People love him.
Oh but this poor eccentric little girl is getting her school taken away! Her happy place! And this smart young man who is a small town hero doesn’t have enough money to pay for that big fancy STEM college in Massachusetts he so desperately wants to go to. What ever shall anyone do??? (Spoilers alert the fundraiser makes enough money for Constance to keep her school and for Sticky to go to Boatwright College.)
Martina runs in to a coffee shop to finally get some work done in this god forsaken place. The only coffee shop in this entire town is called “The Sweater Vest”. Weird name but okay this is the best she’s going to get. Here she meets Reynie. A sweet boy who despite owning and single handedly running a coffee shop mainly sells tea. And this town loves his tea. Reynie tells Martina about how Dipika Perumal is actually his mother and the impending closure of the school is really starting to weigh on her. Reynie then proceeds to go on speech with uplifting music about the power of family, community, and the holiday season.
He also casually mentions that he’s an orphan and omg this is like the forth time someone in this town has told Martina that they’re an orphan. So this town is the just filled with wonderful, perfect, good-hearted orphans who have had these super hard lives??? Maybe Martina does need to become a better person and find the holiday spirit after all???
etc etc etc
Bad Hallmark Christmas movie AU where Martina Crowe is an uptight business woman from the big city who has to come back home for Christmas. She meets small town farm girl Kate Wehterall and romcom high jinks ensue.
