I feel like not enough people talk about Buffy 5x17, Forever.
Everyone knows about The Body, and for good reason. It deserves its fame. But as Buffy says in the next episode, the scariest thing about Joyce dying is that she doesn’t know what comes next.
When I started watching this show, I knew Joyce would die in season 5 in an episode called The Body, so I was more or less prepared. But I wasn’t prepared for what came after.
Something like Hush is widely considered to be one of the show’s scariest, but it did not compare to the shots of Joyce’s feet walking towards the house and the knock at the door. In Hush, I knew that it would end up all right; no main characters would die and they would get their voices back. But zombie Joyce? I had no idea what was coming next. You don’t fear a character dying when one already has.
Would she be a zombie? A demon? Would she look like a vampire? Or, maybe the scariest possibility, would like she look like she had before?
Upon rewatch this moment doesn’t stay as terrifying as other parts of the show, because it is so based on the audience (along with Dawn and Buffy) having no idea who or what is coming. My second time through the show I didn’t have that feeling in the pit of my stomach because I knew I wouldn’t ever have to find out.
But my first watch? Incomparable.

idk what it is but canon couples are always slightly less appealing to me than the ones that aren’t explicity canon. it’s something about picking two characters because you love their dynamic and rooting for them even though you know it probably won’t happen.

imo when willow tried to turn amy back from a rat in s6 it shouldn't have worked and willow is just pulling her hair out trying to figure out why but since she and tara are broken up she never finds out that miss kitty fantastico ate amy back in s4 and tara bought a new rat and hoped nobody would notice

buffy knows spike loves her during season five. buffy knows spike loves her when she comes back and seeks comfort/silence in his presence. and as she comes back to herself and tries to make peace with the fact that she’s Here Again, she still knows he loves her. and i think part of the Big Bad Grabbing The Slayer For The Darkness routine they both cling to is that it allows them to pretend this huge thing isn’t between them so they can get what they both want (someone to stay).
and like obviously buffy cannot allow herself to believe that he loves her for many reasons, but she DOES believe it, she can’t make herself unknow it even though she tries so hard. which is partially where the breakdown with tara in 6.13 comes from because the cognitive dissonance of soulless spike loving her as if he has a soul while she is so lost within herself that the only way she can reach for him is to use him (which would be fine if he was the big bad grabbing the slayer for the darkness) which is hurting him! unfathomably! but he’s supposed to be the corruption! how can he??? any of it???
meanwhile spike has watched the woman he loves be brought back as a shell and he wants to see the light in her eyes and he can touch her now and sometimes that’s enough to make her laugh but he can’t linger in those moments or she’ll go away again! so he can play the role he needs to play so she’ll stay, as if he could keep her anywhere she didn’t want to be. as if he wants her to be in the dark instead of bringing him into the light. but how could he ask for anything more when he already got her back and he didn’t even need to kill her afterwards.
and so they hurt each other and he forgets himself and asks her if she even likes him and it’s too honest and he’s asking too much (he asks for nothing) so before she can throw her life away like it’s nothing, he puts the game face on, makes himself a target, and swallows it all. and she can’t unknow. and it would all be fine except he’s a vampire and she’s the slayer and how can he just say it like it’s nothing when she needs to beat his face in just to keep from screaming.

Why are you always around when I'm miserable? 'Cause that's when you're alone, I reckon. I'm not one for crowds myself these days. Me neither. That works out nicely then.

I think one of the worst moments in buffy history is them framing xander's speech about riley in into the woods as like... correct in any way. it makes you really dislike Xander (even more). Buffy's boyfriend literally cheats on her with vampire prostitutes lol and then tells her that if she doesn't forgive him on the spot he's leaving forever. and then we're supposed to buy that Xander is correct in saying that it's all Buffy's fault and that she should run after Riley to beg him to stay?
It's sooo infuriating how Riley is framed as 'the one who got away' when really he's 'the one who was so cripplingly insecure that he couldn't handle his girlfriend being stronger than him and having her own problems because he's made his entire identity about his girlfriend instead of getting the fuck over himself'
the real reason why xander doesn't want buffy to dump riley's ass as she should is so clearly because he projects onto riley. subconsciously he thinks that if someone 'normal' like riley can be with buffy then he also has a shot. newsflash it wasn't riley being 'normal' it was riley being an insecure condescending freak just like u

the thematic narrative in season 6 of the three OG Scoobies struggling with powerlessness and dealing with it in different ways (Buffy not feeling anything at all, Willow by abusing the material power she does have, and Xander repressing), and all three of them being brought out of it by reaffirming their connection to the world through their platonic and familial connections
