Journal of a Writer - 1 | 18th June 2020

As I like to say, I consider myself as a budding writer. I love writing. I write since I was a child. I always created stories, and my biggest dream is to become a writer.

What I’m writing? It’s a fantasy story. It’s gothic and like a horrific tale. I started writing it the 5th May 2020 (so yeah, this is pretty new) and I write more than 30000 words for now.

I’m currently writing the chapter 5 and I’m strugging a lot today. The last time I wrote was the 10th June. Bad idea. I forgot a lot of my ideas and lost my “motivation” to write. I outlined the chapter 5 the 16th June and, after a bad beginning, a lot of ideas emerged and I was really into it. But I didn’t write, and that was a really, really bad idea. Now I’m really struggling with my writing.

I write with music, I listen Nox Arcana and gothic music by Adrian Von Ziegler. Music is a really great source of inspiration for me. Another source of inspiration is what I read. I think read is really important for a writer.

For now I think I will stop writing and start to get my motivation and inspiration back. For that, I will outline -again- my story. Brainstorming is really important for me. I will listen a lot of music, read (I’m currently reading The Dreams in the Witch House by Lovecraft) and watch writing vlogs on YouTube. Yes, writing vlogs really motivate me for writing.

The Mirror In The Hall

There’s a mirror in the hall and it just hangs there on the wall, I can’t look in it anymore, the man inside isn’t someone that I know, he’s changed in so many ways.

But I can’t look in that mirror anymore, the reflection isn’t me and I don’t wanna see him slowly fade away, living a backwards life within the guilded walls of the mirror in the hall, reflecting in his eyes I see that this is a disguise.

I took it down today but I couldn’t put it away he spoke to me as we came face to face. Looking in his eyes I began to cry he said this is not your fault, this is not your fault.

But I can’t look in that mirror anymore, the reflection isn’t me and I don’t wanna see him slowly fade away, living a backwards life within the guilded walls of the mirror in the hall, reflecting in his eyes I see that this is a disguise.

"This is not your fault" he wails as he starts to disappear, "this is not your fault I need you to promise when I’m gone, that you will carry on I am the way I am, somethings went badly wrong but you’ve held it together like a man, this is not your fault".

Say Goodbye to Grandma

It’s the middle of the night and the phone is ringing.  It’s the hospital calling my mother to tell her that the family should come to the hospital because my grandmother is doing worse.  She and her siblings all met at the hospital.  I stayed home.  I sat in my parents’ bed in my Smurfs nightshirt and wrote my grandmother’s obituary because I knew she was dying.  I was so sad I couldn’t cry. I was calmer than I thought I should be and sadder than I knew I could be. My mother would come home several hours later to tell me that she had died, but I already knew.  

I remember the size of the funeral home.  It was one of those old New England Victorian-style homes with dark wood and plush seating.  It was the funeral home that hosted the wakes for nearly everyone on our mother’s side of the family.  

I couldn’t cry at her wake. I remember sitting in the large women’s restroom and resting area with my cousins and laughing.  Laughing so hard I almost cried, but the tears just wouldn’t come. My cousin Mindy, who I didn’t know very well, cried hysterically when she saw my grandma in the casket.  She had to be held up by others because she was so overcome by grief.  My parents made it clear that that sort of public display of grief was not acceptable in their eyes.

I couldn’t cry at the funeral and the gathering at our house after the funeral seemed like a party. My parents hosted that gathering because they had more space than anyone else in the family.  I wonder now if it was because they had recently remodeled and wanted to show it off.  Either way, that gathering was in the history books as my Uncle Mark’s friend Robin put on his cigarette on my mother’s brand-new linoleum floor.  She did her best to clean it, but that mark was there right up until the day they sold that house.  

Two weeks later when the ground was finally soft enough for her to be buried, I was called out of my 7th grade Social Studies class.  The moment that her casket started to go into the ground, I finally realized that she was gone and I cried.  I cried at the cemetery.  I cried in the car back to my grandmother’s now vacant apartment.  I kept crying until my mother told me to stop because she thought I had cried enough. I still don’t think it was enough.  My heart was broken.  Looking back, I now know that I lost the person who loved me unconditionally. She let me cry when I needed to cry and she held me when I needed to be held.  She let me be me.   I missed her then and I miss her now.

It would be a few years before I’d be able to go back to that gravesite.  When my mother would visit it, I would stay in the car.  It was only when I had my own driver’s license that I would finally visit her grave.  Then I would visit alone and talk to her about my life.  My only regret about living so far away is that I can’t go to her grave, but I still talk to her.  I know she’s in heaven looking down on me and I carry a piece of her with me everywhere I go.  

After my grandmother died, we spent less and less time with my mother’s relatives.  Before she died, we spent every Christmas Eve at her house with all of my aunts, uncles, and cousins.  After she died, my parents invited everyone over for Christmas Eve but that only lasted one year.  There was some mix-up with presents.  Either someone stole my present from my Aunt Peggy or she didn’t bring one for me. Either way, my parents were mad and that was the last time everyone was invited over for Christmas Eve.  It was one more time my parents taught me that once somehow wronged you, you should hold onto that resentment.
