It starts as a joke, is the thing. More accurately, it starts with Lucy dragging him to a cocktail bar, and Tommy moping into his third Sidecar (“Please tell me that’s some sort of gay army euphemism”) while he contemplates, for the millionth time, calling Evan. “So.” Lucy covers his phone with a menu. “Holiday plans?” “Does researching ‘most remote places on earth to wallow’ count?” She sips her old fashioned thoughtfully. “Well, if you really wanna get out of cell range, my buddy says they always need pilots in Antarctica.” It’s a joke. No one spontaneously decides to spend the holidays at the South pole. Two weeks later, his paperwork is filed and he’s on his way.

This is a moodboard for my WIP: BuckTommy Office AU. (Buck has a temporary job as a fire marshal after the ladder truck bombing and Tommy works at the LAFD headquarters in the fire investigation department. No lawsuit involved.)

Here's a snippet 👀:

Tommy grins, then tells him about the rest of the team and their roles, giving him some useful information and advice to get familiar with the job and the workplace.

“Thank you, you’re a lifesaver,” Buck declares appreciatively. He’s honestly a bit surprised that Tommy hasn’t asked any questions about him so he guesses he’s too polite to do so and decides to breach the subject. “I bet everyone already knows me, uh? I ended up on the news, so my reputation precedes me.”

“We don't know you, we only know what happened. I can't speak for everyone but to me you're not the firefighter who got crushed under a ladder truck, you're Evan Buckley, new fire marshal and someone I’d like to know better.”

Buck's speechless for a moment, astonished by an answer he didn't expect. Tommy's words pierce right through him and settle warm and comforting where he needs it the most. “I– I don't know what to say. I– Thank you, Tommy.”

i was tagged by @donovankinard to choose a wip and create a moodboard for it, and share it with a snippet!

this is a mix of my recent obsession with orville peck and my love for secret relationship/pining and a dash of princess bride and it results in tommy is hired as the buckley's farmhand and falls in love with evan buckley, but to his surprise, buck falls for him too!

calling it "and i miss summertime"

He only has time to turn away from the door before Evan takes hold of his face and arm, their lips finding each other in a desperate kiss. Their moans get lost in their mouths, his hands taking hold of the other man’s hips, pulling him closer.  It’s been a long winter but there’s warmth as their bodies finally fit against each other, hands covering a path they’ve spent 6 months fantasizing about. There are grunts, sighs, hums, moans echoing the empty stable before their hands find the skin under the clothes with a gasp. Finally, he had missed summertime.

Evan "Buck" Buckley is an upcoming player with the NHL, a winger signed to the LA Kings after being scouted from the Hershey Bears, and he's finally found a home with his team. He can get his energy out in a constructive way rather than a destructive one, and he's good at hockey. He learned how to skate from Maddie when he was just a kid, a way for her to distract him from their parents' disappointment, and he learned how to be fast even before his growth spurt and muscle gain. He's tall, and strong, and one of the fastest skaters in the NHL. He's happy, and he can see his team going all the way to the Stanley Cup if they're good enough, if they practice and learn how each other work, if they become one on the ice. Then, the unimaginable happens. There's an accident, another skater crashes into him and then another, something cracks loud enough to be picked up by the television microphones, and Buck can't get up on the ice. He presses his face into the cold and sobs through the pain. He's rushed to the hospital and they have to surgically fix his leg. His doctors aren't sure he'll walk again, let alone skate, and he can't hear that. He can't, if he wants to survive this. His physical therapist, though, Doctor Thomas Kinard, "Tommy" as he insists on being called at their first appointment, thinks he can get Buck's mobility back and get him back on the ice before the next season, if Buck follows his routine and does the work. Buck is more than motivated, and he'll do anything that Tommy tells him to (and maybe it's not just because Tommy's a good doctor, but he's also very pretty and Buck is a simple bisexual man). Tommy is funny, and smart, and he doesn't let Buck get away with anything, pushing him to work harder and be better. He is good at what he does, and if he looks good doing it, Buck doesn't mention it to anyone. His hands are magic, and Buck doesn't mention to anyone that his favorite part of their appointments is when Tommy gives him a small massage to help prevent clotting. More than just a physical therapist, Tommy helps him understand that he is still an athlete, he is still worthy of his fans and his friends' attention, that he isn't just his injury or his scars. He reminds Buck every appointment that he's doing a great job and that he is so proud of the progress that he's made. He feeds Buck compliments like treats, and Buck has never had so much praise to feel genuine. It's addicting, far more than the pain meds he's given to make it through the day. He keeps his hands to himself, and his comments about Tommy's attractiveness, about Tommy's hands, about how he wouldn't mind those hands elsewhere on his body, at least until their final session when Tommy clears him to go back to work, and discharges him as a patient. Buck sits on the edge of the bed and looks up at Tommy. "Would it be inappropriate to ask you for your number?" "If you'd said that at the start of the appointment, yes, but since I'm no longer your physical therapist, here." When Buck plays his first game the next season, there's a roar of welcome applause from their audience, but all he sees is the man behind the bench, wearing his jersey with a big grin, cheering him on just the same as he did when he was recovering, and the way he will for the rest of their lives if he's very lucky.

I decided to go with Just Trying to Keep Up just so I'd have the excuse to post one of my favourite scenes I've ever written:

He was the happiest he’d ever been and Evan wasn’t shy about sharing his feelings so Tommy was fairly certain it was the same for him. So certain that he was ready to let loose the three words that had been beating away in his chest for weeks now.

Words that were ridiculously soon to say, but Tommy couldn’t help it. He had to let Evan know exactly how much he meant to him.

But he had to do it right.

It might be wild and too soon and all of the other arguments he’d been through with himself, but the one thing he was going to make damn sure of was that it was going to be romantic.

Tommy plotted and planned and reined himself in until he had the perfect evening in place.

The two of them went grocery shopping together that day—Evan hanging onto his back like an octopus as he read the list over his shoulder, knowing what was already in Tommy’s kitchen off the top of his head—and Tommy thought, ‘I love you.’

They drove back to Tommy’s place while Evan sang along to Carly Rae Jepsen, horribly off-key, throwing the pretend mic Tommy’s way at every stoplight—and Tommy thought, ‘I love you.’

He and Evan were cooking together, taste-testing the sauce, laughing, and Tommy felt the words hammering at his heart, trying to come out. He broke away from a tomato-flavoured kiss, staring at Evan, thinking ‘I love you’—at the same time those three little words echoed through the cozy quiet of the kitchen.

Tommy blinked. “Did I just say that out loud?”

Evan, who had been staring at him wide-eyed, melted into a slow, sweet smile. “No,” he said, wrapping his arms around Tommy’s waist. “I did.” He pulled him closer. “Why? Were you thinking it?”

“All the time,” Tommy said, nodding dumbly.

So I decided to create a moodboard for my priest!Tommy au (officially titled 'Scusa Se Ti Amo', but that's just for show because we all know it'll be called priest au hahaha). I really like how it turned out!!

And a tiny snippet:

Buck thought the church was cooler than the outside, but all of a sudden he's feeling hot all over again. When the priest looks at him, an inexplicable blush creeps up to his cheeks, and he thanks God that he can blame it on the heat and his heavy uniform (never mind that father Kinard's clothes also look heavy and he's still perfectly composed, but Buck definitely won't think about how he'd look all sweaty).

“Thank you, firefighter…” He says, trailing off and extending a hand, and it takes Buck a second to realize he's supposed to shake it and offer his name (not his phone number. Definitely not his phone number).

“Evan. Buckley. Buck!” He blurts out like a complete idiot, and wonders if it's wrong to wish for a five scale fire so they can rush out of there.

Father Kinard raises an eyebrow at him, a smirk on his curved lips. That's when Buck notices he's still shaking hands with the man, and he lets go clumsily. 

“My, that's a mouthful” Kinard says, and Buck almost blurts out that he has something else that's a mouthful before his eyes clock the white collar around the man's neck. 

As it is, he just snickers awkwardly and mutters a goodbye, his voice high-pitched and strained.

Buck's at the truck before anyone else, mentally preparing himself for being teased all through the shift they just started. 

His only saving grace is that, as much as he made a complete fool of himself in front of father Kinard, it's not a problem. Buck'll never have to see the man again, will he? So it's not like it matters.

Naturally, the priest shows up at the station the next day.
