#bsd squid game AU

Re-watched Squid Game recently and now all I can think about is a Dazai Squid Game AU.

But not even Dazai in the games, just the build up to it.

Dazai with his mental health at it's worst, spending most nights drinking, borrowing money from his friends constantly, burning every bridge he has. A very 'No Longer Human', inspired Dazai.

Dazai seeing no reason to keep living, making his life harder for himself with every choice, but somehow going on anyways. He drinks to numb the pain, he gambles to feel a thrill.

Oda is the only person he feels he can still turn to without being laughed out the door- or worse, but even that life line is threatening to break. Oda has kids to look after, he's living paycheck to paycheck himself. He can't afford to keep giving Dazai money and never getting repaid, yet he won't abandon him either. He sees the lost child in Dazai and tries in vain to get him to turn himself around.

But Dazai keeps spiralling.

The sympathy of his friend only making him feel more shame for living the way he does. Dazai simply doesn't know any other way to live. He can't get out of the hole he's dug for himself. He's in so much debt and not just to his friends. To powerful and dangerous people.

Then one night he's sat in the subway station, no home to return to. He's taken another beating from loan shark thugs and he won't risk turning to Oda with them hot on his trail. He sits listless on the floor of the empty station, hoping to rest awhile without being told to move on, wondering once again how it would feel to sink down to the ocean floor, when a man speaks to him.

A man in a neatly press suit, hair perfectly combed into place with a bright and clean shaven face. A man who has no business smiling in such a friendly way at Dazai and he asks the question again.

"Would you like to play a game?"

Dazai being so miserable with his life, hating himself so much and yet so secretly desperate to feel anything else that he stands there in that station taking slap after slap to the face. All for the chance of being able to repay any of Oda's kindness. For Oda to look at him for a single moment without the pity in his eyes, like he used to when Dazai was younger. Before everything went wrong.
