Dear Gus & Magnus,
We were short-handed today because we are no longer allowed to travel with our usual help because we "need" to save money. That makes the filming day much harder than it used to be. Today was another long one, but I packed up and headed to the airport shortly after 4pm. I made it home around 9.30pm, I think.
Dad.

An early 1990s interview with Jeremy Northam, from West Lancashire Evening Gazette (Sat 4th April 1992, p23), about his appearance in Appointment With Fear: House of Glass (an ITV anthology series.)
STRANGE things happen when Gerry Stafford—the last of the line—inherits his grandmother's family mansion.
The ancestral home takes on its own sinister character as soon as Master Gerald and his new American bride Sonia arrive to supervise its sale.
Even loyal house-keeper Mrs Gilbert acts oddly when she leaves Sonia to fend for herself alone on a dark and windy night.
Appointment With Fear: House of Glass (ITV, 8.50pm) is a ghostly chiller starring Lisa Orgolini, Jeremy Northam, Matyelok Gibbs and Mary Wimbush.
Lisa, who plays Sonia, found filming for the half-hour story was "sometimes quite scary."
"Most of our time was spent in a great big old house and I don't like being left on my own in big houses with lots of rooms!" admits Lisa, who is 28.
Fortunately, there was always the film crew there to take my mind off things. I could imagine the house (in Lymington, Hampshire) being very creepy at night. It's just as well that the family who live there have ten children to fill it, but even so..."
Actress Lisa admits that scary films have a spooky effect on her.
She says: "This is an old-fashioned ghost story. I admit I don't normally like to watch this kind of thing at home on my own. It's easier for me to be in one than watch one!
After I saw Hitchcock's 'Psycho' I never took a shower when I was alone in the house for many years."
Ironically in this new TVS film, Lisa actually played a scene in the shower, surrounded by a film crew for company! She says: "I was in a bathing suit and there were people around me spraying mist in the bathroom."
Lisa, who is from Los Angeles, turned down the chance to go to drama school in the States, preferring to come to England and study at drama school in London, where she is now based. Her father is a US film producer.
Lisa's television credits include Tell Me That You Love Me, Parnell and the Englishwoman, Campion, The Thorn Birds, and a leading role in the new series of Perfect Scoundrels from TVS, with Peter Bowles and Bryan Murray.
On stage she played alongside Julie Walters in Peter Hall's The Rose Tattoo with Patricia Hayes and her feature films including Shining Through and The Recruit.
Jeremy Northam (Piece of Cake, Journey's End and Fatal Inversion) plays Gerald, with Matyelok Gibbs (Maigret, The Bill, The Jewel in the Crown) as Mrs Gilbert the house-keeper and Mary Wimbush (Jeeves and Wooster, The Country Boy) as the ghost of Mrs Stafford.
Jeremy, 30, who plays the young heir to the Stafford family's long-established glass-making business, describes the film as "a good yarn."
The self-confessed thriller fan adds: "House of Glass plays upon the conventions of the thriller and the ghost story very well.
"I sometimes think telly takes itself too seriously and short films like this help to stop that happening.
"This is a good, simple story which is ideal for watching on a dark evening!"
Jeremy is the only actor in his family although his father, a retired academic, taught drama, and his mother did some chorus singing for a while.
The youngest of four children, Jeremy's eldest brother Chris is a pianist, brother Tim is a set designer and sister Kate is married with four children.
Jeremy's television career began in the summer of 1987 in 'Wish Me Luck' - he also had a leading role in the second series—and his other TV credits include 'Piece of Cake' and 'Journey's End'.
He spent two years at the National Theatre and in 1989 was winner of the Olivier award for best newcomer. Jeremy trained at the Bristol Old Vic and spent seasons in rep including a spell at Salisbury.
"I suppose I've been thinking about acting seriously since I was about 16. But I can't say it was something that crossed my mind before that.
"I thought it was kind of vanity really. I thought that you would have to think very highly of yourself, and in a way you do, but it's difficult to explain. You have to have a certain confidence."

"That's Colbert, Meesh, Doc Bryan and Stafford(must check) carrying the wounded shepherd to Lt. Col. Ferrando's tent/1st Recon HQ, with the mother following. Some people doubted this mini-rebellion really happened. I wish I'd bet money against those who had."

i find it odd that anne boleyn is expected to please literally everyone all the time, that she only deserves loyalty if she's in this constant people pleasing mode. like she's not the queen and loyalty isn't what she should expect. i never hear anyone asking coa to constantly get everyone titles and positions or they're going to anne's side and if they do it's coa's fault for "alienating" them and she deserves it. and sorry if i misunderstand, but why would anne selecting those three women be petty? gertrude courtenay gets the huge honour of being elizabeth's godmother and yeah i get she probably didn't want it but what did she want? no rewards and no recognition? elizabeth stafford like why shouldn't that be trying to win her over? why is it petty to want her to carry her train but it wasn't petty when mary howard did it? with margaret bryan i don't get why they say this insults mary like you could say it shows she had someone at hatfield who cared about her so it's not like everyone there hated her.
There's a distinct unwillingness to entertain any benefit of the doubt when it comes to AB, for sure.
Carrying the Queen's train was an honour, and there's a continuity in how all the times it's recorded, the women in that position were those of Anne's family, and Duchesses. It was a subservient position in the way that it was a subservient task with a large audience, and in the way that it reinforced the image of the Queen as the premiere lady of the realm, which is probably why in her last attempted offer to her stepdaughter, Anne reassured her that she would not be suborned to that specific task if she chose to accept her invitation to court. This offer is still sometimes viewed as spiteful, however, either because it was not within Anne's initial offers, that we know of (via Chapuys) or because the offer was made from "a position of weakness", not strength, ie, Anne did not offer this at the peak of her ascendancy. However, this is reading the sources backwards, in context Anne had just secured the promotion of several of her "lanterns and light", "her bishops", attended the ceremonial centerpiece of their promotion, the ceremony which bookended her successful Summer Progress with Henry VIII, the death of her predecessor opened the possibility that the Imperial party would acknowledge her as Queen, and she was pregnant and expecting a son.
So, anyway, I digress...their expectations to how many believe Princess Elizabeth's household should have been arranged are not especially realistic. Margaret Pole wanted to serve Princess Mary at her own expense, although I sincerely doubt she would have been willing to do so in the household of the former in a subordinate position, since her offer was specifically to pay for the continuance of Princess Mary's own, separate, establishment.
Let's follow this thread, that AB alienated people and secured enmity through her political missteps. What would the counterfactual here be, exactly? Let's entertain that Anne's influence over her husband was great enough, and that she was 'politic' enough, to realize that the Countess of Salisbury was peeress in her own right and that it would be best to get on her better side. Let's say that she convinces Henry to grant Margaret Pole's request, and her stepdaughter remains where she is in her own establishment. What would have been the ripple effect of this? Could it be that Margaret's son, Lord Montague, would be absent from those meetings of Boleyn opponents, beginning March 1536, in which Chapuys recorded his attendance?
Or, might it be that the Poles would continue to only give lip service via mandatory oaths and continue to privately push for the restoration of Princess Mary at the expense of Anne Boleyn and her daughter? Might it even have eventually intensified Margaret's resentment of the Boleyn faction, to have had to personally pay out of pocket for several years for the upkeep and wages of the Princess Mary's household?
Is it realistic to expect Anne Boleyn to have given way in the matter of the priory of Bisham? Anne Boleyn and Thomas Cromwell both wanted William Barlow, whom they both patronized in their common cause of religious reform, appointed as prior of Bisham, and pushed for the resignation of the current prior. Pole had also been opposed to the man in this position, but upon learning that Barlow was to be his replacement, went the way of 'better the devil you know...' and then decided to support his refusal to resign ("Nicholas Carew noted dryly [...] that the current prior, with the support of Margaret and others, refused to resign, although Margaret and the rest had thought the current prior unsuited for the position before [...] the reform-minded Barlow was put forth as candidate", Margaret Pole: the Countess in the Tower, Susan Higginbotham). The Boleyn/Cromwell nexus had their way, and Barlow was appointed to that position. Should Anne have decided to instead oppose this appointment and placate Margaret Pole? To do that would have not only been antithetical to her beliefs and patronage, but would have had the consequence of alienating Thomas Cromwell, who was, at the time, according to Chapuys, the most powerful and influential person in England, and with Henry VIII, save only Anne Boleyn herself.
#anon#tl;dr . this is all rather easily unraveled if one has familiarity with the sources#even if AB was entirely noncommital to religious reform; which...lol#is it impolitic that she sided with the person in the most favour with her husband the king and chose the prior she had already patronized#over one that she found ineffectual and incompetent...............#was it? i do not think that it was.

For the ask game, ♻️!
♻️ A scrapped idea for your current WIP So Sophie (the maid - her mother was also a maid at Stafford Hall) was originally intended to be a bastard daughter of Edmund (the Baron's older brother) rather than a daughter of a farmer. I liked the idea as it hammered home the possibility of Edmund being Theo's father. It would also show how much scandal Edmund had caused the family previously. But I also like the Potteries Arc including more working class characters, showing how Theo can connect with them, feels he belongs with them, and can get information from them. It was also important to me to have Theo feel alone in his struggle in understanding Bryan & Edmund. Having Sophie to relate to would give him an anchor and that doesn't work because I need my boy to struggle ok. I also worried about Sophie & the Baron in this version. It didn't feel right for his character - he finds out Theo is related to him and drags him up to Stafford Hall to make him his heir after all. So he just ignores Sophie?? Nah. I also had no plans for her once Theo got back to London as the plot develops - I couldn't see a place for her in it. So yeah it was a fun little idea but it wouldn't play out well for the plot. I lessened her role in the story but still gave her a nice scene with Theo of her giving him his mother's box of stuff. ask game is here btw if anyone else has a question im sorry it got buried in my reblogging spree last night lmao
