you got any indie comics recommendations?
OH BOY DO I
So some of these are educational graphic novels bc of who I am as a person but they're SUPER GOOD and you should still read them - but here's my list of recommendations in no particular order
Marie Curie: A Quest for Light (a graphic novel bio of the famous scientist that highlights her politics!)
Folklords (only 5 issues, does some really cool stuff with subverted fantasy tropes, Ansel is a cutie, 8/10)
The Magicians (this is based on the book series by Lev Grossman, and if you're familiar with the FX show you already know the premise, but it's VERY FUN and I like it so it's on here)
The Good Neighbors (this is more of a YA vibe and as the title suggests deals with fae nonsense, very fun)
Something is Killing the Children (some other comics go along with this one like House of Slaughter, all are in the horror genre, and it's a GREAT TIME if you're into that sort of thing)
Shubeik Lubeik (THIS IS A REALLY COOL BOOK ABOUT WISHES AND HOW THOSE WOULD LOOK IN A MORE REALISTIC CAIRO AND I LOVE IT SO MUCH)
Pixies of the Sixties (this is a period piece that deals with things like xenophobia and racism while also playing up the aesthetics of 1960s London and fairies)
Now Let Me Fly: A Portrait of Eugene Bullard (a graphic novel bio of the first African-American fighter pilot)
Little Monsters (a horror story about children vampires in a post apocalyptic setting)
Judas (yes, Iscariot, it's a really fascinating look at the Biblical figure)
Heavy Vinyl (wlw, late 90s record store, teen girl vigilante fight club- good times)
Grimm (based on the NBC show of the same name, there are other titles set in this world too, I'm very fond of this extremely trashy fairtytale-cop show mashup and how poorly it represents cops)
Godshaper (there's a god for every person, except one and he teams up with a god who doesn't have a person and together they travel around looking for a warm welcome and a paying rock gig)
Evita, the Life and Work of Eva Perón (a biography of the former Argentinian first lady)
Eat the Rich (a little bit like Knives Out)
Carmilla: The First Vampire (queer feminist murder mystery inspired by the gothic novel, Carmilla, and pulling from Chinese folklore)
Bone Parish (a necromantic horror story about the rich peddling drugs made with the ashes of the deceased)
Blue Book (true tales of ordinary people encountering the strange and impossible - ex. alien abductions)
Art Brut (equal parts police procedural, hyper-fantasy, and psychological thriller set on a backdrop of a trip through art history)
Aristotle (biography of the philosopher dealing with more than just his ideas)
Alienated (a story about having the power to change the world but not being ready to wield that power- more YA vibes but a good read for any age imo)
Abbott (and Abbott: 1973- a tabloid reporter investigates grisly crimes she knows the police have ignored and that she knows are occult in origin)

Just being curious, what kind of music do you like to listen to? Is there any songs you associate with the death note characters?
Hi anonny! 🧡 I have the music taste of a 90s millennial whose taste crystallized in my early twenties and who kinda stopped finding new music to obsess over around the year 2012, probably 😆 uhhh I really am not sure how to describe it. Some of my fave artists are Modest Mouse, Gorillaz, Bright Eyes, Pixies, Kanye West, My Chemical Romance, and Talking Heads. I like music with well-written lyrics, some theatrical musical soundtracks, and also atmospheric music that's lyricless and that I can vibe to while I work or just chill and bop around and imagine scenarios to or whatever too.
I'm not the best at tying music to Death Note characters either, but I always associate the Carpenter Brut album TRILOGY with my favourite boi L being a sleuthy mysterious super detective. The whole album is good, but some of my fave tracks from it are Le Perv, Roller Mobster, Hang 'Em All, Turbo Killer, and Run, Sally, Run! (X)

(   *  💀  /  daniel ezra, cis male, he/him  )  —  is that kingsley shacklebolt i just saw rushing down the corridor? i hear they’re a twenty two year old gryffindor, returning for their seventh school year, but their friends would tell you that they are grounded & commanding as well as opinionated & strong-willed. if you want to know more about them, i guess i could tell you that they’re pureblood, and from what i hear, they’re currently allying with the order. when our divination professor looks into their crystal ball, they see: the calming presence in the back of the room, muggle records hidden in drawers, steaming mugs of tea, the warmth of a hug, the burn of quiet fury.

wand ➵ Alder wood with cherry trailed over the front like the path of a river, or a lightning bolt, White River Monster spine core, 14 and a 1/4 inches, solid
whilst Alder makes for an unyielding wood, its ideal owner is not stubborn or obstinate, but often helpful, considerate and most likeable. Whereas most wand woods seek similarity in the characters of those they will best serve, alder is unusual in that it seems to desire a nature that is, if not precisely opposite to its own, then certainly of a markedly different type. When an alder wand is happily placed, it becomes a magnificent, loyal helpmate. Of all wand types, alder is best suited to non-verbal spell work, whence comes its reputation for being suitable only for the most advanced witches and wizards. (Cherry, a very rare wand wood creates a wand of strange power, most highly prized by the wizarding students of the school of Mahoutokoro in Japan, where those who own cherry wands have special prestige. The Western wand-purchaser should dispel from their minds any notion that the pink blossom of the living tree makes for a frivolous or merely ornamental wand, for cherry wood often makes a wand that possesses truly lethal power, whatever the core, but if teamed with dragon heartstring, the wand ought never to be teamed with a wizard without exceptional self-control and strength of mind.) The use of a  White River Monster spine produced spells of force and elegance.

𝐅𝐑𝐄𝐄𝐅𝐎𝐑𝐌
his parents used to say he was born for diplomacy. that’s what they’d drilled into him since he was born: fight the good fight, be honest and good and stay calm, always. they can only catch you off guard when you aren’t. he’d always been somewhat of a natural diplomat — the oldest child, expectations hung from his shoulders as if they were coats and he, a coat rack. he’d always been a quiet child, somewhat unassuming, almost shy, content to play and be alone, often found even as a baby, simply amusing himself with his fist over crying, wailing for attention. when they attended the galas and balls befitting of a family part of the sacred 28, little changed. in fact, he was praised for it — how level-headed he was, even when all he wanted to do was scream and shout and set fire to the curtains by the window to stop them yammering on about the importance of blood purity and their precious, precious privilege, how he smiled politely and shook hands and never, ever made a scene. he hated them. he hated every last one of them. their fake smiles and empty eyes, how they hated for no reason and believed themselves to be superior — a kernel of a fallacy that kingsley, even as a child, could never subscribe to.
but kingsley was nothing if not a good man, and a good son, and so, he stayed silent — at least, to everyone who never crossed the boundaries of their home. to them, kingsley was a young wizard who showed particular promise in their circle, but to those who saw him at home, his internal torture over it was obvious. he had muggle neighbours, even muggle friends, people who made him laugh and gave his parents presents when his beloved baby sister was born, and he could not abide the dual life his parents were living. when they were home, they were tolerant — amused, even, by the muggles they surrounded themselves with, something his mother always said was to keep them grounded, because she’d already lost one sibling to pureblood mania and refused to lose herself, or her husband, or either of her children. when they were at the galas, they were cold, a little aloof, they laughed along with jokes at muggles expenses, they shook hands, ate appetisers, danced and never seemed to show any remorse for the roles they had to play those nights, though he knew they had to feel guilty (he hoped they felt guilty.) he knew they felt they had to do it to survive — to thrive, even, in a world in which they weren’t always welcome, but he hates it.
he loves his family. kingsley loves them with every part of him, loves his younger sister with his entire heart, is never not seen at home without her practically hanging off his ankles, and then his knees, and then his hips, until she’s too tall and too old for that, he loves his mother and relishes her hugs and the way she always knows what to say to make him feel better, he loves his father and that deep, slow river of calm that seems to run through him, the same river kingsley has always felt took root in him, but he hates their legacy. he hates their part in the sacred twenty eight. he hates every part of it. he hates that they agreed to this — to what feels like a mortal lock, an unbreakable vow, tying themselves to this until the end of time. he hates that he understands why — their blood runs pure, he knows, in other wizards standards, but knowing what the sacred twenty eight stands for? what it really represents? kingsley thinks that their blood is the blood that’s dirty, that they’re the ones who ought to be ashamed of themselves for their existence, that they’re the ones who value opulence and power over people’s lives and that makes them wrong and evil and undeserving of their magic. it’s the first time — the only time — his parents have ever seen him truly angry — he remembers it well, being fourteen and all uncontrolled fury for the first time, how the quiet anger had burned and swelled under his skin until he couldn’t hold it in anymore, and how he’d made all the glass windows in the dining room shatter, the glass raining like sand when his father waved it away with a swish of his wand, kingsley’s chest heaving as he yells, raging against their indifference, feeling oddly soothed when his mother pulls him into his arms and whispers that she’s sorry. she’s sorry. she knows, she knows. he wishes that were enough — that apology, that acknowledgement that they were — are — hypocrites.
even still, his love for his family, flaws and all, remains, though he’s slowly pulled back from any engagement with the pureblood world over the years. he’s very proud to be his father’s son — the son of an auror, recipient of the order of merlin second class — and his mother’s. he’s proud to be his sister’s big brother, her protector. he’s even more proud when he gets his letter to hogwarts, confirming what they all already knew — magic is strong in the shacklebolt family. he picks up the family wand, purchased in america in the early 1920s — alder with cherry trailed over the front like the path of a river, or a lightning bolt, white river monster spine core, fourteen and a quarter inches, solid — and he feels a piece of himself slots firmly into place. hogwarts is where his father went, where his father’s father went (over ilvermorny), and though he can no longer pretend to be complacent to their every whim in regards to the sacred twenty eight (something which both his parents have since begun to shun), he knows getting sorted into gryffindor would make them both proud, and that’s what he wants, so that’s what be did — the bat barely touched his head before declaring him a gryffindor. even now, as a twenty two year old seventh year on the brink of graduating into a fully fledged war, he wants to make them proud. he wants to be a pillar of strength, safety, tolerance, love, support, he wants to be the friendly face ushering people to safety, he wants to be the one raining hellfire down on the prejudiced idiots who think that they’re any different to anyone else, with magic or without, on this planet, that they’re superior in any way because of their blood.

YOURE LITERALLY THE SWEETEST WANTING TO MAKE PLAYLISTS OMFGJDJDWJSJE I am deeply in love with Yamaguchi, I CANNOT stress that enough. I’ve absolutely surfed all the Yamaguchi playlists on Spotify, and they usually gravitate towards soft indie. I don’t mind that at all, in fact I quite enjoy it all. But I also gravitate towards a more alternative taste (?) so some Bring Me The Horizon, Poppy, MCR, Mother Mother, IC3PEAK, Jazmin Bean, MSI, Grimes, Destructo Disk, Nirvana, whateva 😗✌️. Then there’s weeb-ish territory of Ghost and Pals, Creep-P, Kensuke Ushio, and MOE SHOP OH MY GOD PLS LISTEN TO IT THE SEROTONIN PLEASEJDJSJ. There is then the good times with Lady Gaga, Britney Spears, Rihanna, Ke$ha, Beyoncé, that stuff. There’s the main character/ big antagonist stuff like specifically Pyro by Chester Young & Castion, and artists like Toxic Avenger, Perptubator, and Carpender Brut. Also whatever Mitski, Marina and the Diamonds, Tikkle Me, and Penelope Scott got going on is 👌. It all rates so much Yamaguchi energy, like Snail Mail n stuff too. Basically what I’m saying is that I listen to everything so absolutely nothing is off the table, but just not so much of a focus on the “innocent baby” facade that I’ve been seeing often times in the fandom lately, you know??? Also PUNK YAMAGUCHI 😩✋😈🙏‼️🤩👌💯🛐😍🙇‍♀️ You dont have to do this request if you don’t want to I get I rambled a lot, it’s whatever you feel like and are comfortable with!!! France playlist
Tumblr media
When in France, I wear no pants!
This is my French playlist. It’s one that I am very proud of. It took me several months of researching, listening, finding, playing records to gather over 400 songs. But, France. What a country! This playlist could go as far as 500 songs.
Hit play: https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PL-iHPcxymC1-CHRTel_bBjdT_DAHLrnvX
There is an endless amount of talent from this part of the world. From across many decades the songs just keep coming. Incredible. Une région tellement incroyable pour la musique. Here is a list I created. It took me many months to compile.

At what time of day do you normally feel the best? >> If there is a set time of day when I feel best, I don’t notice. The way I feel seems to depend on more esoteric factors than just where the Sun is in the sky. Although I will say, I do feel better overall when I can see the Sun. Anxiety and despair seem to have more power in the [metaphorical or literal] dark. Do you normally have to hem pants? >> I’ve never hemmed pants. Name one reason why someone should not commit suicide. >> I am unable to name a reason why someone else shouldn’t commit suicide, particularly if I know nothing about their life. It feels strange to me to try to convince someone to stay alive when they are suffering enough that suicide seems a viable option. That’s not to say that I believe they should die -- it’s to say that I don’t believe I possess the power to convince them otherwise. What would you do if you had no one to love and support you? >> I’ve been in that position before, and I pretty much just... kept going? I don’t really know what this question is asking. You either die or you live, and since dying wasn’t working out for me, I just kept plugging along. And collected some pretty heavy issues along the way, but, you know. If you didn’t have love and support, would you feel life was worth living? >> I didn’t feel that life was worth living, no, but being passively suicidal, even constantly, is a pretty easy way to live. Ironically. Passive suicidality is weird.
If you had no family nor friends nor money, would you feel life’s worth living? >> I’ve had no family and no money, and questionable excuses for friends (definitely not the kind that I’d consider supportive and life-affirming...). And my answer is the same as the above one. If you’re unhappy, what would it take to make you fulfilled? >> It depends on what kind of unhappiness I’m experiencing, obviously. They’re not all alike. And some of them don’t even respond to appeals to fulfillment... they just persist and persist until they’ve run out of steam. What was the last thing that upset your stomach? >> I don’t remember. Probably just... something I couldn’t trace. General indigestion. Do you have to go the pharmacy a lot? >> I haven’t been to the pharmacy since... three or so years ago, I’d say, when I had a tooth taken out. Are you sunburned? >> I’ve never been sunburned. Do you wish someone loved you? >> At least two people love me. What I wish is that I had the capacity to feel the love of people that aren’t Inworlders. Do you call yourself stupid often? >> Unfortunately. We’re working on it. What’s a song you love? >> Turbo Killer, Carpenter Brut. (Also, thank you for asking for a song I love, instead of “my favourite song”, which isn’t a thing.) Do you miss anyone who was mean to you? >> Sometimes, because trauma is a bitch. Name someone you know who is a cancer survivor. >> I don’t know any cancer survivors. Are you friends with any cancer survivors? >> ^ Does God often answer your prayers? >> I don’t pray to any gods, so I wouldn’t know. How was your day today (or yesterday, if it’s morning)? >> It was a decent day. Had a good time. Do you wish the sunrise and sunset lasted longer? >> That’s not something I recall ever wishing for, no. Would you want to relive your childhood again? >> No fucking thank you. As hellish as my adult life has been, it was still preferable to being a minor with no control over my life.
Were your college years the best years of your life? >> I didn’t go to college. Would you rather re-live high school or college? >> --- What is the dumbest sports-team mascot you’ve heard of? >> --- Are you a sports fan? >> No. Where do you feel like you fit in the most? >> Inworld. Do you hate social classes? >> Not terribly, or anything. I can definitely see the flaws in them and I’m not necessarily a supporter, but like... hate is a specific emotion and I don’t feel that in this case. Do you think talent should have anything to do with social class? >> I’m not interested in this. Name a country who’s history you know nothing about. >> Peru. Name a religion you know nothing or very little about. Zoroastrianism. I only remember the founder. <-- Same. Don’t you hate know-it-alls? >> I don’t really encounter people that I would describe as “know-it-alls”, and if I did I would just not interact with them. What is your favorite store at the mall? >> I don’t have one. When was the last time you went to the mall? >> December. Do you have a bed or do you sleep on a mattress on the floor? >> I have a bed. When was the last time you went for a run? >> I don’t go for runs, I go for walks. The last time I went for a walk was... Thursday? Let’s say Thursday. (I’m going to get back on schedule tomorrow.) Have you ever tried hard drugs? >> Yeah. Which school subject did you hate the most? >> --- What was the last thing you wore from Aeropostale? >> I don’t recall ever wearing anything from there, unless it was something I got out of a donation bin or something. Which devotional do you read? >> I don’t. Do you appreciate classic literature? >> I appreciate classics from an academic point of view, I suppose. But I’m not going to pretend to enjoy them, because most of them I don’t.
What is something you find strange? >> *shrug*? Do you like your natural hair color? >> I don’t care about it, really. Would you rather get a pixie cut or get dreadlocks? >> I have wanted dreadlocks since I was a teenager, but I’ve come to terms with the fact that I can’t have them (because I can’t maintain anything more complex than a buzzcut). Would you rather dye your hair or get a perm? >> Neither.
Do you keep Christmas lights up year-round? >> No. Have you ever started a new trend? >> No, I have never had that level of influence. Do you have any artwork of yours from high school? >> I don’t have anything from high school. What did you win a scholarship for? >> --- Did your college meet your expectations? >> --- What was the best thing about college? >> --- How old were you ten years ago? >> 23. What’s the best piece of advice you can give someone ten years younger? >> I don’t have any advice for some random hypothetical 23yo. Do you feel like you are old enough and experienced enough to give advice? >> I can certainly give advice on things I’ve had experience with, of course. But that doesn’t mean I’m going to, unless I’m explicitly asked. How old were you when you started to feel mature and experienced? >> That’s a feeling that people have...? Well, I’m not familiar with that feeling. I understand that I’ve experienced a lot of things, and I can see that I have grown over time, but there’s no time when I can say ‘this is when I started to feel mature and experienced’. Like, that definitely sounds like some story device shit. Were your 20’s hell? >> Some parts were, of course. Also, let me just say that it’s interesting for a survey question to assume that I’m older than 20something, for once. What type of bug do you see the most often in your home? >> Fungus gnats and fruit flies. Do you put off things until the last minute? >> Sometimes. Do you have the air conditioning on right now? >> No. It’s actually been on the cooler side the last couple of days. That’ll change completely by Wednesday or so, but it’s nice to have a reprieve from the noise of the fan. Is your mom the same size as you? >> ---
Does camping appeal to you? >> Yes. What color is your sleeping bag? >> --- How often do you pray? >> I do not.
Do you surrender to Christ daily? >> I do not. Also, don’t say stuff like this to me, it just sounds sexual.
When was the last time you went to church? >> Uh... last Christmas? I think I went this past Christmas. Do you know any Christians who aren’t judgmental? >> Probably. The thing about Christianity is that there are so many sects and offshoots and individual interpretations of the text that it’s really not that surprising to run into Christians who are pretty uninterested in being judgemental about non-Christians or gay people or whatever the fuck. I mean, it’s not surprising for me, anyway. I’ve met a wide variety of people over the years. Do you believe there are any good people in the world? >> Uh, duh. What’s one thing you are scared of? Flying cockroaches. <-- Pretty much. Hate those bitches.
