𝐂𝐎𝐌𝐈𝐍𝐆 𝐒𝐎𝐎𝐍…
a special collaboration with some of my favorite people.
The vending machine hums, half empty with the lights flickering. And the stereo— the stupid, beat up stereo put out more static than music. But above all that, the clock. It ticks by, switches the hour and suddenly the air shifts. He leans back, picking at the skin on his fingers, staring at the door expectantly. Someone has to walk through those doors, anyone has to. They always do, dragging a little more than baggage behind them. What were they searching for anyways? What could anyone be looking for at a motel on a plot of land, miles from the last city and the next? He never understood the appeal, but maybe he had to get away from the desk to see it.
The job is boring, always less than rewarding and honestly If he had it his way, he’d be far away from this. But the stories that stick to the walls and the hearts that come in and out the squeaky door, they keep him there. For you see, The Heartbreak Motel was not just any motel, no it was far more than the faded wallpaper and dingy brass hardware. There was more that happened behind closed doors, more than he could ever speak to, that had a profound effect on both new and old relationships. Sure, the exact details of what unfolded behind closed doors would always be a mystery to him, but as new faces stepped into the lobby searching for somewhere to lay their weary heads for the night, he couldn’t help but wonder just what fate they would meet when he handed over the keys.
It’s eleven at night. There’s a certain weight in the air that adds the anticipation. What could he be waiting for… who could he be waiting for? Could it be two friends who are about to share a moment they’ll never talk about again? Or maybe a couple with a storm cloud brewing overhead? Or perhaps two strangers in need of company?
The door swings open, bells chiming as it knocks against the glass. The man looks beat, eyes dark with exhaustion. He drops his duffel on the floor, hands slamming against the counter as he rests his weight against it. “Need a room for the night.”
He smirks, leaning back into his chair as he lazily reaches for a key. He slides it over, brushing the tag against the man’s hand. “You’re in luck, we have just the room for you.”
Every key handed out is the beginning of a story that ends at checkout. He didn’t have to do much, just sit back and let the Heartbreak Motel do what it does best.

Home improvement project, meh version:
I've been watching a ton of home decor videos where they paint somebody's studio apartment dark green and install a built-in wall arch/bookshelf/workstation/coffeemaker and all these other fancy things I can't do but deeply long to
and one of them was like "If you want a renter-friendly fix, just swap out your cabinet hardware and electrical cover plates! It makes such a difference!"
Soooooo I gave it a go. Went out to a ReStore in a bougie suburb and found some matching cupboard knobs for $1 each. Brushed nickel replaced by patterned antiqued brass. I did pay full price for the electrical covers, since I didn't find any used ones that matched.
(GOD I hate my kitchen cabinets. Crappy paint job that constantly chips and flakes and just looks awful. If I had the time, spoons, and guts, I'd strip it all off and live with the fake dark wood underneath. I kind of started in an ADHD fugue before realizing it was not a good plan right now.)
Did it make a difference? I mean, I guess so! I see and notice the knobs every day.
As for ease, it was fairly reasonable, except that the screws that fixed the knob on were too long, and then the ones on the switch plate cover were the wrong size.
Also, I'm just kind of disgruntled because the rest of my kitchen is all stainless steel, so the overall vibe doesn't feel very different.
But I did it and figured I'd post it.
