Match Review: Manchester United 1-0 Luton
The Iceman cometh: Victor Lindelöf struck in the 59th minute to give United the three points at home to Premier League strugglers Luton at Old Trafford, in yet another game that United should have scored several more goals...
United started with Garnacho on the left wing and Rashford out right following a woeful showing in the previous game from Antony, and it almost paid off early on with a deflected cross from the right looping into Højlund's path, only to go directly at the keeper for a crucial save.
Luton had their chances too, with a poor Lindelof headed clearance leading to a cross straight back in at Morris - who headed on goal unchallenged by the Swede mere seconds later. An excellent save from Onana kept the visitors at bay, but his confidence won't be helped by silly mistakes like that from his defence.
A flank switch mid half saw Garnacho presented with a beautiful chance 1 on 1 with the keeper thanks to Rasmus Højlund, only for the Argentinian to cut onto his right and lose the advantage. Had he stayed on his left, rounded the keeper out wide, there was no defender to close him or stop an easy finish to give United the lead. A mistake, and an experience to learn from, but a frustration for United at a time where goals are in desperately short supply.
The second half was more of the same: Højlund glanced a header wide from a Bruno Fernandes free kick, United did get their goal thanks to Victor Lindelöf and a deflection off Scott McTominay to lay him off, and Rashford hit a late chance directly at keeper ))))))) that really should have gone either side of the stopper. Still, a win's a win, and a clean sheet is also incredibly valuable against a stubborn, strong team containing ex-United prospects such as Tahith Chong (pictured above) and Teden Mengi.
United's game notably improved with the introduction of Mason Mount and Scott McTominay dropping deeper. The Scot might be valued for his goal contributions this season but his traits suit being a bruising ball-winner type. He's not a stereotypical "6" but neither is he a CAM. He's too poor with his passing and positioning to suit such a role, but with Casemiro's poor form there's a huge chance for a Mount/McTominay partnership to blossom. Mount is a box-to-box creator, McTominay is a strong duellist. Both have high stamina and an eye for goal, as does Bruno Fernandes ahead of them, making this a midfield that could do good work.
As a personal aside I prefer the metronomic passing of Sofian Amrabat over McTominay, but there are enough games for both to play - even together - and to control the middle of the pitch.
Remarkably, United's win lifts them into 6th Place in the Premier League also means that despite the seemingly disjointed and misfiring form, the Red Devils are currently THE form side in the EPL. This will provide some solace to Erik Ten Hag who is very slowly getting injured players back for selection, but will perplex fans given the sub-par showings we've seen so far this season.
There's also the Højlund conundrum. The Dane is joint top scorer in the Champions League, but yet to find a goal for United in the Premier League - despite his consistently good showings up front. A goal will come, and hopefully be the first of many, but again the waiting game is tough for the fans keen to see United flex their muscles.
Yet another international break is upon us, meaning United's next game is away to Everton on Sunday November 26; a potentially sticky fixture given Everton seem to be finding their feet again under Sean Dyche, but also a good time to have a break and disrupt that rhythm.

Home supporters and the remainder of his teammates at Old Trafford held their breath in relief this week as Tyrell Malacia came back to competitive action for the first time since June 2023, when the Netherlands lost out to Croatia in the Nations League. Since then two knee surgeries meant that 25-year-old Dutchman had to sit out for an extremely lengthy period of 17 months. Malacia's loss is more bitter because he joined Old Trafford in 2022 with much promise, after graduating well at Feyenoord. He was signed for an initial £13 million and was expected to be one of the top picks in the Erik ten Hag queue. Sadly, Malacia never got the chance to really prove himself under ten Hag, who was relieved of duty in October last year. Ardfern, CC BY-SA 4.0 https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/4.0, via Wikimedia Commons It was this week, though, that things finally seemed to change a bit. Malacia returned to the pitch for Manchester United's under-21 side in their EFL Trophy tie against Huddersfield Town. Though the Red Devils eventually lost 4-1, his performance was once again the former version of himself. The Dutch left-back looked sharp as he led a youngish back line by word of mouth in his 45 minutes before stepping off at the break as scheduled. The return news of Malacia is holding the outpour of support from the faithful and the teammates alike at Manchester United. The club's official Instagram posted a picture of Malacia back to the action, captioned, "SO good to see you back out there, Ty!". Indeed, close friend Marcus Rashford echoed the same sentiment when he commented "Twinnn" with three love heart emojis. United captain Bruno Fernandes responded too, on his Instagram story, by commenting, "Happy to see you back." Caretaker manager Ruud van Nistelrooy, who was assistant at Manchester United with Malacia, has claimed that he already forecast this return, saying as recently as this week, "Tyrell is the furthest in the moment. It's good for him to plan game minutes, maybe in the under-21s." Then, with Malacia back on the pitch, all eyes are now on his further rehabilitation and potential return to the first team. The Red Devils, under the new manager, Ruben Amorim, go through a critical period, and a return from Malacia to fitness could be a valuable addition to their defensive options. Read the full article

Bruno Fernandes sends 'angry' Man Utd welcome message to 'world class' Mason Mount
Bruno Fernandes sends 'angry' Man Utd welcome message to 'world class' Mason Mount Manchester United's prominent player, Bruno Fernandes, playfully mentioned a heated exchange he had with Mason Mount while extending a warm welcome to the new signing for the Red Devils. After a prolonged transfer process, United has officially announced the acquisition of Mount for a fee of £60 million. Bruno Fernandes, the vice-captain of Manchester United, has become the first player from the club to extend a welcome to Mason Mount, expressing his thoughts through a social media post shortly after the official confirmation of the deal. In his Instagram post, Fernandes reminisced about a heated exchange between himself and Mount during Chelsea's 4-1 loss at Old Trafford last season, subtly alluding to the prolonged duration it took for the transfer to finally materialize. Using an 'angry' emoji, the Portugal ace joked: "Why did you take so long to sign? Welcome @masonmount." The picture accompanying Fernandes' post depicted a passionate moment where Fernandes was seen engaging in a heated confrontation with Mount, who had possession of the ball securely tucked under his arm The two players were known for their competitive battles on the field, and now they will have the opportunity to be teammates at Manchester United, bringing their rivalry to a collaborative setting. Bruno Fernandes playfully questioned Mason Mount about the length of time it took for his transfer to be finalized. The remarks from John Murtough, Manchester United's football director, created a wave of excitement among fans as he bestowed the title of 'world class' on the club's latest signing. Expressing his opinion on Mason Mount's arrival, Murtough highlighted the midfielder's exceptional intelligence on the football field and praised his remarkable technical abilities, emphasizing that these qualities would make a substantial contribution to the squad. “We have admired his talents for a long time, so we are delighted that he has chosen to take the next steps in his career here at Old Trafford. His style of play and attributes are a perfect fit for this squad, and we all believe that he will only improve further working with Erik ten Hag and his coaching staff. “Mason himself is a world-class player but he also has the ability to improve the players around him through his game intelligence and tactical awareness. We were particularly impressed by his strong desire to join United, and his thirst for further success, as we push to drive up our performance levels next season and beyond.” Mount added: “It’s never easy leaving the club where you grew up, but Manchester United will provide an exciting new challenge for the next phase of my career. Having competed against them, I know just how strong a squad it is that I’m joining, and I can’t wait to be part of this group’s drive to win major trophies. “Everyone can see that the club has made big steps forward under Erik ten Hag. Having met with the manager and discussed his plans, I couldn’t be more excited for the seasons ahead, and am ready for the hard work expected here. “I am hugely ambitious - I know how amazing it feels to win major trophies and what it takes to do it. I will be giving everything to experience that again at Manchester United.” Bruno Fernandes sends 'angry' Man Utd welcome message to 'world class' Mason Mount Read the full article

Manchester United boss Erik ten Hag says Bruno Fernandes is a doubt for the Premier League trip to Tottenham Hotspur on Thursday.
Our no.8 played 101 minutes of Sunday’s Emirates FA Cup semi-final victory over Brighton & Hove Albion, but looked uncomfortable at times after turning his ankle awkwardly during the first half of the game.
Fernandes played on and was a vital cog in United's midfield, but was eventually replaced by Wout Weghorst in extra time and missed the nerve-wracking penalty shootout, which United won 7-6 after Solly March's miss during sudden death.
Ten Hag isn’t yet sure whether Bruno will be able to feature when we face the north Londoners, in what is a crucial fixture in the race for top four.
United are fourth in the table, six points ahead of Spurs, with two games in hand, and we could effectively knock the capital club out of contention with victory.
There are some unavailable. [Lisandro] Martinez, [Raphael] Varane. We have to see how Bruno Fernandes is,” Ten Hag told reporters when asked for an update on his team.
We don't know yet, he is a question mark. I think for the rest, we are quite okay.”
Supporters were concerned when a picture of the midfielder recovering at home appeared to show him requiring a protective boot and crutches.
However, Ten Hag suggested this didn't necessarily rule Fernandes out of the journey south, although time was tight to allow the swelling to reduce.
It's more often [than not] that players [wear the boot], that we protect them,” he added. "Prevention.
But it [the ankle] has to settle down so we all have seen he played the full [90-minute] game and it happened in the first half.
But [the game is] Thursday, so tomorrow is quick but we have to see what is possible.”
Bruno was suspended for the Europa League defeat at Sevilla, and has missed other games due to bans and being rested, but the only match he has been otherwise unavailable for since joining the club in early 2020 was, ironically enough, the 3-2 win against Tottenham in March 2022.
Fernandes was ill that day, when his fellow countryman Cristiano Ronaldo scored a hat-trick

The Striker Problem
United need a new centre forward to lead the line and bang in some goals, but there seems to be a shortage of ideal strikers available with Daniel Levy more likely to go to Jupiter than sell us Harry Kane, Osimhen too expensive, Håland at City, and an array of hot prospect young talent not quite ready.
Surely there's someone out there suitable for United though, right? Right?!
Rasmus Højlund - The 20 year old, pictured above, is THE number 1 striker target for Manchester United at present. A deal is reportedly in the works, with a loan back of Mason Greenwood to fill the void left.
Dubbed the next Håland (despite only being 2 years younger), Højlund is tall, fast, agile, and technically gifted. He also likes to stay central ala Van Nistelrooy, rather than drift wide. This discipline is very important to Erik Ten Hag with an array of floating forwards in Rashford, Sancho et al.
16 goals and 7 assists in 42 games is a fair return at Atalanta, and with the likes of Bruno Fernandes and Mason Mount behind him next season... perhaps he could do even more in the Premiership.
Mehdi Taremi - He might be 30 years old, but Taremi could be a great senior striker to lead the line and act as mentor to a young striker like Højlund. He has 31 goals and 14 assists in 51 appearances this season gone, with 5 in the Champions League for Porto. A short 3-year deal could do the job for United as an interim while Erik Ten Hag continues his squad overhaul, buying time for academy prospects like McNeill and Hugill to step up.
Gonçalo Ramos - The 22 year old had a banger World Cup, a good season with Benfica, and a whoopsie moment with a... private video leaked onto the internet. PR gaff aside, 27 goals and 12 assists in 47 games is very promising. A good choice, though it's unclear if he could step up to the physicality of the Prem.
Randal Kolo Muani - 23 goals and 17 assists in 46 games. Nice work from the 24 year old in the Bundesliga and German Cup. RKM is rumoured the other main striker preference for Ten Hag - potentially even WITH Rasmus Højlund if funds work out. At 4 years his senior they would both be young prospects for the future, but with Muani having just that little extra maturity to show results quicker - and perhaps warrant a starting CF position.
Loïs Openda - Linked with Leipzig to replace Chelsea signing Nkunku, Openda is a promising young striker in Ligue 1 and a potential gamble for United if they were tight on budget.
Aleksandar Mitrović - Premier League proven striker with Newcastle (hmm) and Fulham (okay he turned good) but perhaps might now hate us after his red card in the 3-1 defeat to United. He's big, strong, and fearless though. He'd be an asset.
Amine Gouiri - Gouiri is also a young striker in Ligue 1, like Openda, but his game is much more rounded. He is the Complete Forward, to borrow Football Manager parlance. This could suit Ten Hag's forward pressing game, but he might lack the dedicated striking discipline needed for United at present.
Ivan Toney - Another Premier League proven forward ala Mitro. He's big, strong, and confident. He doesn't lack pace and has that striker's instinct knack to just bag goals consistently. Dependability is huge, and I think bids might come in regardless of his betting ban come January. I doubt it'll be from United, but you never know. He'd do bits for us, Arsenal, and Chelsea - all who need a true CF.
Dusan Vlahovic - Strong at Fiorentina, Vlahovic only managed 14 goals and 4 assists in 42 appearances this season. Rumour has it that The Old Lady are willing to part ways, especially considering money troubles rumoured, but all my spidey senses are tingling and saying do not buy when it comes to the Serbian. Fellow Serb and United great Nemanja Vidic, interviewed on Rio Ferdinand's FIVE channel, said he wouldn't be suited to United, and it's fair to see why given the struggles as a lone forward for Juventus. He needs a dedicated no10 or strike partner to play off. He'd be fantastic alongside someone like Joao Felix, and that wouldn't be an impossible loan acquisition, but United style would be more likely to use Felix as a deep striker or false 9 with Rashford and RW overlapping ala Salah and Mane to Firmino.

Victory!!!!
It’s a shame perhaps that this game will only be remembered for the controversial Bruno equaliser. My view is: you win some, you lose some. Going by a very strict interpretation of the current rules, the decision is probably correct. That doesn’t alter the fact that it looks very wrong. This is a case which aptly sums up the saying “the law is an ass”. Only in my last football post I mentioned a couple of incidents that had gone unjustly against us. I would also bring to mind an incident last season when Everton were shamefully denied a goal against city which probably would have drawn the match: the FA apologised to them, but they weren’t given points and city didn’t complain.
Anyway, my football correspondent watched the match, and his report puts it into a proper perspective:
hi - united 2 city 1
i watched this match at a busy social club - in the olden days city hardly ever won at old trafford - nowadays the table has turned and it united who rarely win with the honourable exceptions of april 2015 and february 2020- however on this occasion united fans had cause for optimism - united were on a 8 match winning run whilst city had just exited the league cup at southampton
in the 1st half united adopted the solskjaer tactic - defend in depth and try to counter attack with pace - it worked out pretty well - city dominated possession but found it well nigh impossible to create scoring opportunities - haaland's only contribution was 1 blocked shot - in contrast on another day rashford might have scored 2 but it was goalless at half time
city came out energised and united seemed on the ropes - one felt a goal was coming and it arrived on the hour mark when grealish rose like a salmon to head in de bruyne's cross - one feared for united but then came the moment of controversy that changed the destiny of the encounter
rashford now playing centrally was found by casemiro's through ball - he seemed to be offside as he chased down the ball towards goal as city's defenders trailed behind him - coming into the picture was fernandes - as the ball reached the penalty area rashford stepped aside allowing fernandes to put the ball into the net - the linesman flagged rashford offside and city breathed a sigh of relief - however rashford had not touched the ball so it now hung on the decision by the ref and VAR as to whether rashford was interfering with play - to my mind he clearly occupied the attention of the city defenders allowing fernandes to sneak in and score - nevertheless the goal was given
the enraged city sought to retake the lead but this left them at risk of the counter attack - with 5 minutes left fernandes sent garnacho scampering down the left - as he approached the area there were just 8 players in shot - the other 14 were spectators as garnacho's cross was blocked - garnacho tried again and located an unmarked rashford 6 yards out in front of goal - a sidefoot finish and united were ahead - TV confirmed rashford was behind the ball when it was crossed so no controversy about that one - city tried their best to equalise but a stubborn united held out
in truth united had a stroke of luck with their 1st goal - but luck always plays its part over a season - sometimes it is bad but sometimes like today for united it is good - united are now just 1 point behind city - if city are in the title race then statistically so are united but realistic united fans note that the team is facing a heavy fixture workload on 4 fronts so maintaining a title challenge is extremely unlikely - what can be said is that united supporters feel a sense of pride in their team returning - just a few months into his job erik ten hag has transformed the outlook - the promised land is still a long way off in the distance and it may take quite a bit of time but it seems that the manager knows which way to get there
bye
