Will you side with the Coalition of Ordered Governments and send Marcus Fenix and Dominic Santiago into action, or will you command the Locust Horde and unleash the awesome power of the monstrous Brumak? If you're still doing them!
Top Five Gears of War WTF moments
oh I'm always doing them if anyone wants to ask me any bc lists are fun :D
also, this was SO HARD omg. favorite moments would've been so much easier, or funny or sad ones lmao, but wtf moments?? I even called my brother to brainstorm lol. so idk if these all count properly but they at least have a little bit of wtf to them :'D
okay so this was my immediate thought when I saw the ask: when Marcus sees the Brumak and goes all "Yeah we should ride it." :'D I literally laughed out loud in amused disbelief lmao it was great.
it was also a kind of a "wtf for real?" moment when I realized that once they ended up inside the worm thing they would just run around inside it lol. it was also cool to take it down from the inside! but also weird :'D
the snatchers from gears 4 were also a wtf is that thing moment for me because of how they just... carry you around digesting you until you're either freed or dead? yeahhh wasn't expecting that!
Baird's plan to drop the masses of tickers in the crate down to take care of the big baddie? yeah I had my doubts but boy knew what he was doing :'D
uhm this is more a sad wtf moment but Tai's death really made me collect my jaw from the floor I did not expect it to happen or happen like it did. he deserved better :(
thank you for asking! altho this was hard it was also fun :D 💖
#mismultifandommess#ask and i shall answer#meme thingy#the ask me my top5 anything thingy#i've only played gears 1-4 once#so i might not remember everything super well#as much as i loved them

Game Journal 04/29/20: After The Brumak Fight, I’m All In On Gears Tactics!
I wouldn’t exactly say I was hesitant to put my full commitment behind Gears Tactics, there’s no universe where I wasn’t going to play this game, but after the first boss fight against the iconic Brumak? Oh you can just count me all the way in. Brumak’s have a weird history in Gears of War, I vividly remember most of the marketing material for the first game heavily featuring them, largely because it’s clear someone at Epic Games thought their design was cool as hell. When the game actually came out though, The Brumak was relegated to a cutscene, only actually becoming a part of the game when the PC port added in “the lost chapters” bonus levels that....to be honest I don’t know if were actually cut from the base game, or just added in to move more PC copies, but they were merely okay, even if they did finally add in the big monster from all the marketing! Here in Gears Tactics the Brumak is back to their imposing as hell self, straight out of the marketing with the sad music! The encounter takes the form of a really creative battle where the only way to inflict any damage to the boss is to shoot the tanks on his back. Thing is, whenever any unit takes a shot at the thanks, the Brumak will turn around to deny that unit a follow up strike. Positioning your soldiers in a four way zig-zag to keep such a large and imposing enemy confused and disorientated is a ton of fun, and handily sold me on the idea that the fast paced energy of Gears of War could flawlessly translate to a genre known for it’s slow goings.
Plus the campaign just brought my squad to Vasagar! We only know of Vasagar from like, Gears V, where it’s in absurdly worse shape than it is in this game, but any kind of recognizable location is more than welcome by me!
I’m extremely impressed at the overall quality of Gears Tactics. I can’t wait to keep playing more of this game, it’s making me find an appreciation for a genre up to now I couldn’t stand! Such is the power of Gears of War, you know, along with the chainsaw guns, ridiculously muscled dudes and savage violence.
Random Screenshot Of The Day:
Sometimes it’s a wonder what a simple re-texture mod can do to the entire vibe of a game. The Commonwealth looking green and vibrant is like a whole new world to explore!
Stray Game Notes:
- Nothing much! All I played today was Gears Tactics and it was only in the breaks I had in-between final assignments!
- Well, I did play Ring Fit in the morning like I have been for the past two or so months. Sometimes I forget that it’s a video game at all, which is really a disservice to it because it’s a great video game!
- Yesterday I got to the point in Fallout 4 where the Brotherhood of Steel showed up and you can get up to the Prydwynn, remember that precocious kid from Fallout 3? He’s a Hitler now! Enjoy!

Alrighty, One Baird-centric snippet for @thisistheendtimes!
For context Baird just punched a wall.
Cole huffs and shakes his head when he sees his knuckles and Baird flips him off.
Look, he’s an asshole, but he’s not a monster. Bad enough for everything else they’d done, but for the Locust to brand the people they’d enslaved? Like fucking cattle?
He doesn’t recognise the rune burned into her skin, but he can make an educated guess at what it says and it makes him sick to his stomach.
So yeah, okay, he’d lost it, a little.
It wasn’t completely sympathy, either. Stuck in that fucking pod, listening to people screaming, voices he sometimes thought he’d recognised, knowing eventually it’d be his turn...
Nope. No. Not going there. Stuff it in a box and shove it waaay back, stop thinking about it. Think about anything else Damon.
They’ve made it back to the Ilima sinkhole, so he focuses on that.
Most everything is either on fire or crumpled into ruins, or both. Smoke and dust are still billowing into the open air. The Locust had done a number on Ilima. With a giant worm apparently.
Shit, if he’d known that’s what that scroll he’d found was talking about he would’ve been more concerned.
Hindsight was a bitch, as always.
Delta turns a corner ‘round a ruined building...and into a Locust patrol. That’s great actually, Baird would prefer to shoot something rather than think right about now.
They pull into cover as the Locust start firing on them and Baird lets training and instinct take over.
Cover, shoot, cover, kill, push up. Rinse and repeat.
It’s going fairly well, until the Reaver shows up. He really does not like those things.
The damn thing gets them pinned, Marcus and Dom to one side, with him, Cole, Carmine and Kid on the other.
“The rider!” Kid yells over the shooting.
No one else answers, Baird thinks he might be the only one who heard her.
“What?” He yells back.
She presses closer to his side, yelling in his ear to be heard.
“Shoot. The. Rider!” She tells him.
Shoot the...well, alright, in the interest of scientific inquiry. He aims and takes of the head of the grub apparently controlling the Reaver. As soon as he does the thing goes nuts, shaking off the other grub before it launches back into the air and fucks off.
Huh...Well that’s something.
They clear what’s left and regroup.
“What the hell happened with that Reaver?” Dom asks as he and Marcus rejoin them.
“How’d you know that would work, Kid?” He asks her.
“Reavers are...shy.” She explains.
They all turn to look at her in disbelief.
What.
“They only fight with a rider to control them, if the rider looses control, or dies, most Reavers will just run away.” She continues.
“That work on anything else the Locust use?” Marcus questions.
She shakes her head.
“Corpsers mostly don’t have riders and Brumaks...will fight anyway, they...like how humans taste.” She replies.
“Uh, do we wanna know how you know that, Kid?” Cole asks, sounding slightly nauseous.
“No, you do not.” She replies firmly with a shake of her head.
Baird would kind of like to press for details, actually, rather than letting his imagination supply various horrors, but he’s not about to make Kid have another breakdown.
The first one had been harrowing enough.
The least they can do is get her out of this fucking hellhole first before asking questions.
Baird can admit he’s curious about what she might know about the Locust, but she’ll probably need some time with a shrink before Command or anyone else starts picking her brain. He’s not envious of the position that puts her in.
Shit, they’re probably going to tell him to go to the shrinks too, now that he thinks about it. Well, wouldn’t be the first time he’s played cat and mouse with them, maybe he can give Kid some hints.
They keep moving through the ruins, looking for somewhere to set up smoke for the Raven to pick them up.
“Marcus, looks like a safe LZ on that roof.” Dom points out.
The roof in question is about three stories high, on what looks to have been a town hall or something official like that. Most of the thing is still standing, miraculously.
“Good call. Lets move!” Marcus orders.
Baird is so very ready to be out of the Hollow.
The find a side entrance that is only slightly on fire, mostly smouldering embers by now, and make their way up the stairs.
“Are you okay?” He hears Carmine ask Kid.
“I am...not sure how...being a person again, meeting other people...is going to go. I’m scared, Ben.” He hears Kid reply softly.
Baird doesn’t think she realises it isn’t quite quiet enough for the rest of Delta to not hear; he feels a little bad for eavesdropping.
Not enough to stop though.
“It’s okay, I’ll be right here, anytime. You’re my friend, yeah?” Carmine tells her.
“Thanks, Ben.” Kid sounds relieved.
Cole catches his eye and mouths ‘aww’ and Baird rolls his eyes and resists the urge to punch him.
Cole...likes the emotional stuff, is good at it, at people. Baird is not, never has been. Maybe part it’s the reason they get along, the whole opposites attract thing. At the very least it means he doesn’t have to deal with people so much, can work on what he’s actually good at.
They hit the top of the stairs. Most of the roof is clean off, which is good for the Raven. It’s mostly open space up here, a few rooms offering a bare amount of cover. Not so good. Delta begins to set up.
“Smoke’s up, Sarge!” Carmine reports a minute later. “Hope the Raven spots us before the Locust.” He mutters.
Oh no, no no no, hasn’t anyone been teaching the rookie anything?!
“C’mon, man, don’t jinx us! Idiot…” He snaps.
He gets a glare from Dom for that, and he glares right back. Seriously, when has anything ever gone right after a statement like that!
They take up positions in the central room, Cole takes up position beside Carmine. Baird thinks about arguing, decides it isn’t worth it. Marcus and Dom take the outer walls, left and right.
Something snarls. Kid twitches.
“Locust!” She hisses in warning.
“Look’s like the jinx worked!” Dom announces, firing on the stairs they just came up.
“Great! Nice one.” Baird mutters.
“Bring it on, I’ll take down all these bitches!” Cole replies.
More Locust come from the other side, guess the stairs are clear there, too. Things are starting to get dicey.
“Where the hell’s that chopper?” Baird snarls to himself.
Something barrels into their position, howling, and sends them flying. Baird gets his bearings back to see a Locust standing over Cole, one foot on his wrist, stopping him from firing his Lancer, the other on his chest, Boltok pointed at Cole’s forehead.
“Cole!” He yells, knowing it’s too late, grasping for his own Lancer, but it’s just out of his reach, Carmine is still on the ground, Marcus and Dom are too far away…
Kid screams, and this is different from before, not panic, or terror. This one is rage.
Suddenly, she’s on the Drone, climbing the things back. Distracted from Cole, the grub lowers the gun as it snarls and swipes with it’s free hand, Kid ducks the claws, but they catch along her forearm, she doesn’t even seem to notice.
She gets both legs around the things neck, leaving her hands free, what the fuck is she doing?!
Baird see’s her curl her hands, leaving her index and middle fingers straight and then stabbing them into the Locust’s eye sockets, pushing all the way to the first knuckle.
Fucking hell!
The blinded grubs staggers back as it thrashes and howls.
“Kid, get clear!” Cole yells; he’s managed to get up and grab his Lancer, and he revs the saw and approaches the Drone.
She jumps away, rolling inelegantly as she hits the floor, Carmine’s by her side in an instant.
Cole saws the Drone from shoulder to hip, leaving a spatter of gore and a twitching corpse.
Baird manages to grab his Lancer and hauls himself back up, using the wall behind him as support, Carmine helps Kid stand, looking between her and the corpse.
Marcus and Dom pull back into the room, having pushed back the Locust still outside.
They both look around at them, and notice the body on the floor.
“What the hell happened in here?” Marcus asks, looking around at the stunned group.
“Oh, yanno, nothing much. Just Kid stabbing the eyes out of a Drone before it could splatter Cole’s brains!” Baird yells, in a very manly manner, not at all a shriek, thanks.
Look, Baird had just watched an unarmed civilian, that had up until now been completely harmless, just stab a Locust’s eyes out, with her bare hands, when he had been expecting to watch his best friend die. Give him a break, okay?
“Kid?” Marcus asks, sounding shocked. Good they’re all on the same page here.
Dom raises an eyebrow, looks at Cole, who nods back.
Kid glances at Marcus from where she’s standing next to Carmine, trying to wipe the...uh...gunk from her hands on her tunic.
“It was going to kill Cole.” She says, tonelessly.
Baird notices her hands are shaking.
“Hey, I ain't complaining!” Cole jokes, breaking the odd tension.
He walks over to Kid, patting her head like he’d done before, on the barge. She turns into the contact, her arms hugging around his waist. She whispers something, and Cole replies, too quiet for anyone but them to hear.
Baird watches them, feeling his heart finally slow to something normal. She’d saved Cole’s life. He doesn’t...quite know how he feels right now, besides the desperate relief.
“Delta, this is KR One-Nine. I have eyes on smoke.” One-Nine calls in.
Oh thank god. Baird is even more ready to get out of here than he was before. He needs a drink, scratch that, he needs several.
So, here I am at 50k+ words...How did this happen?? I'm only up to New Hope!
Would anyone like a snippet? Something specific or dealers choice?
Requests joyously accepted for 24 hours after posting. If noting comes in, I'll just pick something at random.
Please help me feed the Validation Goblin it's eyeing my kidneys!

Game Journal 05/09/20: Gears Tactics Final Thoughts
Spoilers for Gears Tactics
So that was one hell of a video game! I have no doubt in my mind that Gears Tactics will go down as one of my favorite games of 2020, and probably the most surprising. I’m gonna do another loose-ish post tonight, just jotting down my final thoughts on Gears Tactics. Like I said above, expect full story spoilers for the game in this post, so be warned!
Story: Gears Tactics is really intriguing! Ukkon does fall into that Gears bad guy trap of having little screentime and not a ton to really do, but on concept he’s really interesting! As far as I understand, he was either a scientist at New Hope or a patient himself, and he’s fully aware of what he’s become, but see’s it as a net gain. I thought his connection to Reyna was interesting, having come close enough to her to steal Myrrahs old pendent without even realizing what it was, or who Reyna really was.
I also enjoyed the sort of Origin Story for Gabe and Reyna’s Outsider clans, what happened to Gabe post Gears 3 is still a mystery (as far as I know), but I liked that we get a concrete reason as to why he’d leave the COG to begin with. Before this we really only knew of a small handful of peoples left on Sera, The Stranded, Vectes, The COG. It’s nice to get some context as to where the outsiders came from! Gameplay: I’m usually on the side of despising more or less anything tactical, but especially things that are turn based. There are games here and there where I don’t mind those things so much, usually ones that don’t feel like the bog standard dice rolls that usually turn me off, and Gears Tactics feels nothing like those! The combat system is fast, fluid, and every scenario feels just like a tense shootout you’d have in a regular Gears game. Sliding into cover is encouraged in multiple ways, there’s numerous bonuses for playing aggressively and enemy turns, no matter how intricate, feel like they end in the blink of an eye so you never feel like you’re waiting around for the fun part to begin. Maybe it’s just me, but I also felt like this was the most supremely forgiving and on my side tactics game I've ever seen. There were multiple times when it seems the odds were stacked heavily against me, but I always managed to pull out a win from dangerous conditions. Hell, I think i’d need two hands to count how many times I made shots with absurdly low chance percentages, sometimes even critical hits at that.
The Crew: Not including Thrashball Cole, who isn’t canon (but is to me damn it!), and Tyrone “Wizard” Johnston: The coolest minigun guy this side of the.....is there a Mississippi river equivalent on Sera?
The enemy variety was also wonderful. Not every enemy in the franchise history was on display, but the ones that were all felt extremely appropriate for the kind of game this is. Wretches actually feel like a threat when they can close a distance quicker than you can plan for. Grenadiers feel far more like the threat they were always presented as when they close the gap with their Gnashers. Kantus priests finally get to not be done dirty for once with their powerful enemy buffing abilities, turning even the most rote battle into an instant nightmare. I was also a big fan of the bosses! Brumak, Corpser and Hydra all served as great bosses and great love letters to the franchises past. Post Gears 3 you don’t see many of these weird creatures anymore, for legit story reasons of course, but here we get to be reminded why they were such imposing threats in the old games. The Corpser fight especially was a huge challenge for me. The way it was only vulnerable when it lifted it’s legs, much like in the original Gears of War, created tense situations that it could be really hard to think your way out, but thrilling when you finally managed to land a couple hits. Overall: I really loved Gears Tactics! I think I was maybe getting a tad sick of some of the more obvious padding near the end, but I wouldn’t say that detracted much from my experience at all! If I had to give it a score I’d say it was a solid 9/10. Just due to it’s pretty hefty length, I doubt i’ll replay this one over and over again like I do the other Gears games. Even so, I’m really happy I took a little trip outside my usual gaming comfort zone with Gears Tactics and if you’re like me, I’d recommend it wholeheartedly!
Random Screenshot Of The Day:
The final battle with Ukkon is a clever battle where you get your squad separated between two platforms. It’s tense to have to deal with both the boss and the constant reinforcements when you only have two people per platform. Suddenly, grenade cooldowns are the most important things in the game!
Stray Notes:
- Nothing much really! Other than Gears all I really did today was finish up Star Wars Rebels, which was really good! You really need to make it past the first season of that show, but once you do it’s pretty smooth sailing from there!

Wynn Plays: Gears of War 1.2
(+) The whole ‘stay in the light’ mechanic is kinda cool. It’s a nice layer of strategy to throw onto basic combat. Having to decide when to blow tanks because maybe you can get some of the bad guys to eat themselves, etc. It changes things up nicely.
(+) I also appreciate when you utilize the same mechanics established earlier for different things, like the troika guns and the spotlight. Problem solving that doesn’t always include shooting/blowing shit up is a positive too.
(--) Meanwhile, I FUCKING HATE the level where you have to drive the car and use the uv turret, but only one at a time despite the fact that there are three people in the car. There aren’t any real hazards on the road and there’s only one path, so just put the car on rails, let Dom drive, and let me fire the turret. Or just stop putting car levels into shooters that otherwise don’t have cars.
() I wasn’t expecting the change into straight up horror game with lots of weird angles, jump cuts, blood, and jump scares.
(?) I’m not sure if the jumping info is player info or an actual Fenix hallucination/something he can do like clairsentience.
Cole’s dialogue is so freaking extra lmao. “The Train’s home is on the rails!”
That said... I know I said put the car level on rails, but then there’s an actual rail car level?
Oh. My God. It’s like a demonic hand-spider. WTF.
Where is all this plot coming from?? I already forgot what the resonator did because I thought it was just a MacGuffin to get us to go into the thing. And then it turns out it’s not useful after all.
Wait, what? It’s not just military daddy issues but real daddy issues too? HIS DADDY ISSUES ARE STILL MILITARY DADDY ISSUES.
This house is the least house-looking house I’ve ever seen. And are those statues of his dad? At his dad’s house? What a fuck.
WHAT THE FUCK IS THAT THING
....it’s called a Brumak apparently.
How many acts is this game? Five. and I just finished the fourth. Ok. Let’s do this.
RAAM sucks. But also, what was the point of that whole ‘’omg the bridge is out why isn’t he jumping’ cutscene?? Is Fenix suicidal?
Aww military daddy helped him into the chopper. Redemption. Is that his actual dad?
“It has torn our world apart” so I guess this is our planet? Those reavers are gross.
Well, that’s Gears of War 1 done. Think I’ll play something else then go to GoW2.
