my used copy of the incredible hulk novelization by peter david arrived in the mail today and i have spent the better part of two hours devouring its contents. and this line (from the reunion scene where bruce agrees to come with betty) hit me so hard i physically recoiled and had to read it twice over to be sure i’d seen it correctly.

“She guided him to the car as if she were leading a blind man. That might not have been entirely wrong, because for three years he had been wandering in darkness, like a boat adrift with no bearings, and Betty was his lighthouse.”

this encapsulates so much about them in so few words. this is what’s been boggling me about the mcu’s depiction (or lack thereof) of their relationship. she’s so important to him which is why i will never understand why they had him choose to leave her and then never told us where she was all this time until so much later. never showed us that she was looking for him, or that he would even talk about her to anyone. tried to pair him up with natasha and then abandoned that so fast.

there’s also this earlier line in the same scene:

“Very softly, she said, “You were never out of my life.” And he knew what she meant, because she had never been out of his, although thousands of miles had separated them.”

can you feel the soulmateism. even samson knew it instantly because he says that bruce may as well have been in the bed beside betty, figuratively or literally, because of how much of a place he still holds in her life and in her heart.

so why couldn’t they have stayed like that? why did they try to make it look like they didn’t matter this much to each other when they do?

This is not based on what I think he would listen to, rather what i listen to and think would fit him thematically/character arc wise. Basically what I would make an animatic to.

Nightmare by Set It Off

the monster being the hulk, the "with nowhere to go, im out on my own" specifically when he's on the run from the government, and then the verse of a suicide attempt specifically "And when my body crashes to the pavement, I'm right back where I was before" because then the hulk would save him by taking control.

The Mess I Made by Parachute

I could see this specifically being about Betty Ross, and Im reminded of the ultimate avengers movie where he is filled with a lot of guilt over what specifically he did in that movie.

Key verse: Should've held my ground I could've been redeemed For every second chance That changed its mind on me I should've spoken up I should've proudly claimed That oh my head's to blame For all my heart's mistakes

I think the benefit for this song is it could be seen for a more general reflection of Bruce's life. Of how he felt before the hulk, his issues run deep and were not started when the hulk grew physical form.

Now this is a more loose thing, but i could picture this as being sung from a villain or someone who views the Hulk/Bruce as a monster. overall I just like the chorus

Now I see this as more a Bruce x Natasha sort of thing. The sexual nature of it, the tension of him maybe hurting her, or her hurting him, or overall just their relationship burning up. so yknow specifically first Avengers/age of ultron. (as a sidenote i also like to think of this song with steve. so like. poly steve x nat x bruce. thats another post for another day)

this going into natasha being the femme fatale assassin type. Im overall just a fan of the dynamic of them being similarly dangerous to eachother even though from an outsider perspective they might see bruce as the more intimidating one because of the hulk. idk its just an interesting dynamic of perception vs reality, emotional strength versus physical, and trauma and how that relates to both of the previous dichotomies and also their histories of being used and hunted by agencies and governments. Im a shipper I'm sorry. when I find a bruce/thor song I'll get back to you.
