The first thing I noticed about them as they approached was their skin. Smooth and pale like expensive stationary. They were wearing wetsuits and a traditional bonnet adorned with symbols. I would find out later that symbols, something similar to a hashtag but with more lines and a star, were amulets to help protect them and bring them home during their dive. The tradition of ama diving has been going on for thousands of years. These women, these mermaids, these indigienous protectors of nature, dive down to the ocean floor on a single breath and collect ingredients, like abalone, sea urchin, sea cucumbers to take back their amagoya and cook over a charcoal grill. I spent a day with them, went on the boat with them as they dove in near freezing waters, cooked with them and ate their food and basked in their kindness and ancient energy. Sabarmati Ashram Sabarmati Ashram (also known as Gandhi Ashram) is located in the Sabarmati suburb of Ahmedabad, Gujarat, adjoining the Ashram Road, on the banks of the River Sabarmati, 4 miles (6.4 km) from the town hall. This was one of the many residences of Mahatma Gandhi who lived at Sabarmati (Gujarat) and Sevagram (Wardha, Maharashtra) when he was not travelling across India or in prison. He lived in Sabarmati or Wardha for a total of twelve years with his wife Kasturba Gandhi and followers, including Vinoba Bhave. The Bhagavad Gita was recited here daily as part of the Ashram schedule. It was from here that Gandhi led the Dandi march also known as the Salt Satyagraha on 12 March 1930. In recognition of the significant influence that this march had on the Indian independence movement, the Indian government has established the ashram as a national monument. Pozanan, Poland. 🇵🇱 There is a charm I love about Eastern Europe. This city reminds me of my first time abroad but most of all it reminds me of my journey. 😊 I started traveling in 2012 and slowly I’m building the life I want for myself. Looking back I’m so grateful at how beyond blessed I am that this broke AF ratchet immigrant kid is going places 💁🏽‍♀️ It was my first time going alone anywhere , and it pushed me out of my comfort zone. It taught me that people aren’t very different, changed my perspective, and now I came here on my first work trip blending in my love for tech and travel. ❤️ I didn’t get to be a backpacker now but I did get to interact with locals a lot. I had no expectations but what I’m impressed with the most is how many people from all over are here. 😌 People are coming here to Poland for opportunity, including black brown and Asian folk. Our world is becoming more and more globalized and with that comes more immigration. ✌🏽 It’s often viewed as negative because people don’t like change for the most part. *SOUND ON* Bahay Kubo is a children’s lullaby from the Philippines. Chances are, if you’re of Filipino descent your Inay or Lola sang this song to you. “Bahay kubo” translates to a Nipa Hut, an indigenous silt house, and the song is about all the vegetables that grow around the hut. At Toyo Eatery, they showcase every vegetable from the song, each prepared separately then combine them into one dish. @jordynavarra recreated the garden in a bowl, planting the 18 vegetables in edible “soil”, and while I dug into my garden, our server sang us the lullaby. I was reminiscing about this experience with some friends over the weekend and was moved to tears showing them this video and recalling this moment so I thought I share it with you too. Growing up, the number one most requested dish from my mom at parties was her lumpia. Sometimes she would oblige but most of the time she’d say no and cite how much time it took to make. It’s true, rolling lumpia is a process but totally worth the effort. I’ve had a lot of different lumpia in my life but my mom’s version is my fave.
