#brotherhood is dark but not as much as 2003 so if you want a not so dark anime with a definite happy ending then brotherhood is for you

Okay I'll bite. What happened in this guy's childhood to make him go to the extensive body-destroying lengths to bring his mom back??
-Sky Floor
His father left and his mother was wonderful to Edward and his brother, they loved her very much. But in the 2003 version, she died, possibly from being heartbroken over Edward’s father leaving. She was sick for days and finally passed away. In the brotherhood version it was definitely an illness that passed around Risembool (where Edward lived) and his mother caught it and she died. He and his brother missed her and Edward wanted nothing more than to bring his mother back. He thought he would use alchemy to do it, but human transmutation is very illegal because of how dangerous it is. Alchemy is dependent on equivalent exchange, and it’s practically impossible to bring someone back to life. So Ed lost his leg, and Alphonse lost his entire body. Ed couldn’t lose his little brother so he connected Al’s soul to a suit of armor, losing his arm in the process.
Oh but don’t worry! His life gets so much worse :)
#there’s two versions of this show#there’s 2003 that was following the manga but caught up too quickly so it did its own thing#and brotherhood that honestly didn’t follow the manga in the beginning but DID especially in the end#2003 is MUCH darker than brotherhood#brotherhood is dark but not as much as 2003 so if you want a not so dark anime with a definite happy ending then brotherhood is for you#if you’re fine with a dark anime with a bittersweet ending and a very messy film at the end. then 2003 works too#I personally love both#but they are VERY very different from each other lol#like it’s funny at how vastly different they are#but regardless this show is amazing. both versions have a great story#beautiful brotherhood#and well written characters#like don’t get me started on the female characters they are ALL amazing#especially in brotherhood#anyways I’m done I hope that told you enough#now it has been a hot second since I’ve seen 2003 and brotherhood so the death of their mother may be different than what I said#but oh well#today is a special holiday for fma enjoyers btw#asks

Rise of the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles - Why Season 3 Would Be A Bad Idea… Nerd Time.
First look at those nerds, those dweebs, those goofs. I love them and want to squeeze them. Okay onward!
I’m gonna get hate for this… and I accept that. But, please hear me out. For personal reasons first of all, I’m happy how it ended because if Venus was introduced as fans theorised I’d be disappointed because Venus is my LEAST favourite character. (Probably because I really disliked the Next Mutation.) Now my personal reasons are out of the way with, let’s get technical.
Have any of you watched a TMNT show where it was consistently good? And I mean, up until the last seasons? Because I haven’t.
The 1987 version was non-linear, much like Rise is, HOWEVER Rise has a beginning and ending. 1987 didn’t, but that was from the 80’s and it was bound to be silly. It was made to sell toys and the episodes were made around the toys, so obviously it wasn’t going to be linear. Then it was cancelled without an actual ending (no shock).
Okay, so! 2003! They actually had a good arc! Season 5 was meant to be the last season, but they were in demand and made Season 6 (Fast Forward) and Season 7 (Back to the Sewers) in which it became ridiculous, repetitive and just boring. The designs were less dark and rough, and more childish and bright. Not to mention even the future ideas were dumb. Like, you offed Shredder plenty of times you don’t need him back! (Thought Season 6 has a soft spot in my heart due to the Dark Turtles.) So it was cancelled without a solid ending.
How about 2012? A similar thing happened. Half way through Season 3 it was already getting a bit silly, I mean they were to space, then there was Dracula, and it was just… so much… like they turned emo at one point! It was insane! (Again, the space arc is special to me due to the Journey into the Centre of Mikey’s Mind.) So again, this was cancelled with a sad excuse of a final episode.
Even the 1990’s Movies! By the third movie, it is agreed upon that that movie is the worst. And The Next Mutation didn’t get a second season, but the again it is generally agreed upon that The Next Mutation is a poor TMNT adaptation. (2007 never got that sequel with the focus on Mikey due to layoffs and the director leaving, and Astro Boy bombed, thus causing the studio to go bankrupt.)
So, what would have happened with Rise? The same thing. By Season whatever, it would become ridiculous, and stupid, maybe repetitive and it would be cancelled without enough time to make a good, solid ending. Rise got Character Development (something 1987 and 2012 didn’t get), a plot with goofy episodes showing the bond in brotherhood (something 2012 didn’t get), a final where everything’s resolved (something none of the previous shows got), and a movie which had a solid story, character development and it didn’t feel like it was for nostalgia sake or even a cash grab. (Something 2012 didn’t get.)
Turtles Forever is a crossover movie with 1987 and 2003, but the marketing was handled poorly and was released for TV rather than a full length movie in the cinema and it was poor due to the style changes for the 2003 gang. Though it is considered to be non-canon, unlike the Rise Movie, and again, unlike the Rise Movie, it wasn’t given a theatrical release.
Now, could there have been more character development for the Rise Gang? Oh definitely! Leo could show his leadership skills developing, Mikey could show his skills developing, Donnie could develop his emotional skills and Raph could help Leo co-lead and develop his skills to relax. Casandra could be given more screen time and character development, as could Draxum and Big Mama. But don’t forget, you guys got a theatrical release movie (at least in China) and the movie never had problems with that release like Turtles Forever (such as ratio problems and cutting time down), you guys got an actual ending to the series, with decent character development and story arcs, and new characters and places. And don’t forget, the seasons always got ridiculous after the first few seasons…
That being said I would still watch Season 3-however many seasons they would do of Rise TMNT, because I like TMNT… I’m just being technical.

What are some "problematic" ships you like?
do you really want to know because I have some really problematic ships? If so I'll tell you. A lot of them have age differences. Sometimes big ones. A lot of them are with evil people. And a lot of them aren't straight. And lot of them are just plain, well taboo. This will probably be long so stop reading if you don't want to read an essay.
My problematic ships:
Roy Mustang x Edward Elric Fullmetal Alchemist: ok really problematic straight out of the gate. Not only because of age difference but also because Roy Mustang is technically Ed's boss/superior officer in the military. Not that Ed fully listens to everything Roy says. And Roy constantly teases him about it. Roy is also snake but someone trying to change things for the better. He's also has done a lot of bad things. But so has Ed. They are both to messed up people trying to fix things they've done wrong and they are both intimately aware of that about each other. They both are incredibly brilliant and have in common the type of powers they use. You need to watch Fullmetal Alchemist 2003 to understand(not brotherhood. 2003 first) they are not canon but the canon ships bore me and lack any real romance so there you go.
Luz Noceda x Philip Wittebane: I know I know! This one is really fucked up. So fucked up. And Lunter is my otp. Believe me I know. But I have a dark fascination for this ship. Especially considering every interaction Luz and Philip had. And how much they have in common.. Like this my go to ship for when I want angst and trauma and just to see a dumpster fire. When I want Luz angst. I love Lunter. If Lunter is my happy ending, this ship is if I want tragedy and bad endings. This my depression ship!
Zuko x Happiness avatar the last airbender(anyone who is not Mai because she honestly sucked.) I am not a Mai fan. She is a horrible written character to me personally. And just horrible for Zuko. I mostly love any Zuko ship that has a water tribe sibling in it. But now a days that seems too toxic for people. You can look up the reasons in the anti zutara, anti zukka, anti zuko tag. But Zuko is my favorite character. Anything that gives him happiness makes me happy. Over all this mostly seems toxic because of Zukos past and family. But he had a redemption arc. One of the best. He deserves some happiness as he works hard to change things as fire lord.
Lunter/Luz x Hunter: You understand this needs no explanation. You know the owl house Fandom.
Dipper x Bill gravity falls: Yeah this one is really really bad. I think I have a really messed up taste for romance. Especially where age difference comes into play? Maybe I'm a masochist? Who knows. But I have a soft spot for adhd/autistic characters with older/immortal people. I have a soft spot for immortals/dangerous people protecting said autistic/adhd people.
Bakudeku my hero academia : I have a soft spot for redeemed bullies who actually put in the work to change. One of my favorite movies was a walk to remember.
Just in general a running theme I seem to have in a lot of my problematic ships:
age difference
Gay
power imbalance
In love with the Bully
In love with the villian
And sometimes its just plain taboo, toxic, or just un healthy. But I love it!

anyway while Fullmetal is on the mind, something that bugs me a fair bit is the argument people have that 2003′s treatment of the plans to get philosopher’s stones works better to them rather than Brotherhood/the original manga’s take on things with the military orchestrating a series of violent revolts and wars to carve out a massive human transmutation circle into the country
so yes, I will concede that both plans are extreme and require a lot of things to go very right; i’ve seen a few reactors questioning why Kimblee was allowed to live at all after killing his superiors, and it’s my view that he was kept around (and before him they probably did this with anyone who fit the same lack of ethics) to, if it was necessary, carve out the crest of blood if the timetable started to run out.
I still stand by my view that as I’ve gotten older and thought about it more, the more Dante’s plan in 2003 makes no sense at all. It’s dramatic, sure; the big reveal in the final episode stands as an excellent use of animation bump and emotional moments, but in retrospect much of FMA 2003 seems to run on emotional moments rather than if they really make that much sense. In contrast, Brotherhood and the manga set up everything from the very beginning, setting it up all very well.
Essentially her plan boils down to releasing the information on making a philosopher’s stone, making people desperate enough to want to create it, and then taking it afterwards. This is opposed to Father’s plan in the original manga and Brotherhood, where the government was making philosopher’s stones all the time and controlled the means of making them (by killing tons of people they had no more immediate use for) and the purpose of the plan was to use the whole country as a giant Stone.
Additionally Dante’s plan has the weak point of relying on a lot of factors neither she or her homunculi can really control, while Father was in charge of Amestris since it’s very begining; the country exists to be used in his plan, then discarded (much as he regards his own children). There is much comment made about FMA 2003 being more realistic or dark in how brutal the military is, but its no less brutal in Brotherhood, and Father’s plan working amounts to a simple observation about human nature:
That there is no deed so horrific, no action so cruel, nothing so evil that a regular family man doing a job won’t do it every single day. There’s no need for false flag operations; you just tell people to go there and kill those people because its their job, and they’ll do it. They might wind up with regrets later, they might question it as they go, but they’ll still do it. The homunculi organized it, but the key point is that any of those people could have said no. Even if it would have meant being killed themselves, they still could have said no, and they didn’t.
Father’s plan makes more sense to me because while it still came close to failure and error, he had it organized from the very beginning; it was a well constructed plan whose errors more point as an element of the paradox of him being inhuman to the point that he misses some fairly obvious things, and TOO human in the failures of perspective he has. In contrast Dante just sort of... sits there in the woods not that far from Izumi and the homunculi mostly act autonomously until she becomes a presence in the story; far too much of 2003′s plot twists and story seem to abruptly come out of nowhere, which is another factor in me going from loving it to genuinely hating it on many levels; while it was MEANT to be different from the manga, it has too many abrupt and really extreme moments of tonal dissonance, plot turns that come right the fuck out of nowhere.
I still have a meta percolating based on the fact that 2003′s plot point that the State is an alternate version of Britain makes absolutely no sense even given a lot of alternate universe material due to the geography around Britain (it’s an island) and that of the State (landlocked with no ocean visible on the maps, and if you assume Brotherhood’s geography, is right next to a country visibly inspired by dynastic China with a desert inbetween).

I know that you're my enemy (but I love you all the same) 👀👀👀👀
Ooh! That one was actually the first fic I ever posted on Ao3 (and is still technically in progress even though I haven't updated it in over a year 😬). It's for a 2009 cartoon called "Wolverine and the X-Men" that only got one season. In canon there was a Nightcrawler/Scarlet Witch star-crossed lovers thing going on, and since Nightcrawler is my favorite X-man I wanted to explore it more!
Summary: She couldn’t stop seeing the wonder in Kurt’s eyes when she’d taken him to the concert, or the joy at simply being able to walk outside. She couldn’t stop seeing the betrayal and disappointment in his eyes when he discovered the dark secrets beneath Genosha’s glittering facade. Now he had been returned to her. Now he was safe. But could he ever forgive her?
More in-depth explanation under the cut, as well as some snippets.
I don't know how familiar you are with common X-men storylines, but basically, Genosha is an island that Magneto nominally built as a sanctuary for mutants away from humans. Nightcrawler (aka Kurt) helped some other mutant refugees get there, then was offered the grand tour by Magneto's daughter (aka the Scarlet Witch, aka Wanda).
Kurt was a mutant who was born with extreme physical mutations (blue fur, solid yellow eyes, prehensile tail, a little bit like Quarry from TMNT 2003) that made it impossible to blend in with the general human population, so he grew up in a circus freakshow.
Genosha was really the first time he'd had the opportunity to just go out and be a normal person. So Kurt and Wanda were basically having fun and going on dates until he found out that Magneto was imprisoning anyone who caused trouble or disagreed with him—and that Wanda knew about it.
Kurt escaped back to the mainland (despite Wanda's best efforts) to try to warn the X-men, but he was intercepted, knocked unconscious, and brought back to Genosha to be imprisoned indefinitely, with Wanda as his jailor.
Kurt's presence forces Wanda to start reexamining her father's cause and his methods—to ask herself if the ends really do justify the means, and if the ends Magneto is working towards should be pursued at all. The part i'm chipping away at now is how Wanda's betrayal really reinforces Kurt's existing trust issues.
Wanda's trying to figure out if she's a person worthy of Kurt's love, and Kurt's grappling with the fact that he still cares for someone who hurt him so deeply, even though he tends to be "once bitten, twice shy".
My favorite part that I've posted so far actually doesn't have anything to do with Wanda and Kurt's relationship, but Wanda's relationship with her father and her twin brother Pietro, who has been banished to the mainland by Magneto to do his dirty work:
Unbidden, her thoughts turned to her brother Quicksilver. Pietro. It had been unthinkable, once, for him to be so far from her side. Some days, she still found herself turning to tell him a joke, or show him something that would make him laugh. It had been years since Father sent him to lead the Brotherhood, but the absence of him still ached. You mean years since Magneto cast him out , a traitorous thought whispered. She tried to tell herself that Father would call Pietro back soon. Maybe next year. Maybe after Trask and his Sentinels had been dealt with. Maybe after the X-men fell, or came to join them. Maybe… In her bones Wanda knew Father would never let him come home. Quicksilver had done too much of Magneto’s dirty work, still continued to do it in the desperate hope that this time, it will be enough. This time, he’ll be proud. This time, he’ll love me . But Genosha was a place for new beginnings. And Pietro — insolent, questioning, playful Pietro — didn’t fit his vision. Wanda couldn’t (wouldn’t) answer whether Magneto would go to war for [ordinary mutants], but she had known for a long time that he would never go to war for his son.
"Wolverine and the X-Men" sets up such an interesting situation with his three children. First there is Wanda, the Scarlet Witch, his loyal right hand and trusted general. Second (always second), there is Pietro, Quicksilver, his son who he sees as little more than a troublesome pawn. Then there is Lorna, Polaris, who is protected and sheltered and the only one treated like his actual child, probably because she is the only one who inherited Magneto's abilities. The different ways Magneto plays favorites with his kids makes me hate him so much more than the actual war crimes he commits.
My favorite part that I haven't posted yet would have to be this:
“Kurt, are you awake?” Wanda. Kurt didn’t even try to stop the animalistic hiss that crawled up his throat. “Are you alright?!” He should have known better. He should have known better. No one could be trusted until proven otherwise, and kindness was always suspect. How many times did that lesson have to come back to bite him before he finally learned it? “...Kurt?” Nightcrawler unfolded himself from his perch on the wall and started pacing around his new cage. He dragged his nails along the walls to feel for any seams or imperfections, but even the grid lines of light were perfectly smooth with the metal around them. The rasping screech his claws made on the metal set his teeth on edge, but it should make his feelings towards Wanda the Scarlet Witch abundantly clear.
Like, yeah Kurt will still be falling in love with her, but he's going to try to convince himself to hate her first.

Just watched Vampire Hunter D: Bloodlust!
It was so so so much fun!
Okay so what's interesting about this one is that unlike the 1985 movie which Ashi productions (now Studio Reed) made, this is a madhouse film.
For those who don't know, Madhouse was seriously putting itself on the map in the 80s and 90s with famous gems like Barefoot Gen, Perfect Blue and Legend of the Galactic Heroes: My Conquest is the Sea of Stars (which was the first animated adaptation of the LOTGH and preceded the now very famous anime series). Aside from that it also co-animated works like My Neighbour Totoro and Ocean Waves with Ghibli!
So it's no surprise that they were picked to start working on Vampire Hunter D's sort of sequel film in 1997. When Bloodlust was released in April of 2001 it would go out alongside the likes of iconic anime movies such as Metropolis (May 26, 2001), Spirited Away (July 20, 2001, co-animated with Studio Ghibli) and Millennium Actress (July 28, 2001)! Making this movie certifiably smack dab in the middle of the Madhouse golden age.
For a great analysis of the supposed downfall of Madhouse studio there's this youtube video which I highly rec.
Anyway I think Bloodlust was definitely a return to the more gothic/gritty tones of their 80s works such as Wicked City, Demon City Shinjuku and Bride of Deimos. But with a little less bombast and a lot more elegance, as befits a tale of noble (and not so noble) vampires. It's definitely all in on the gothicism still but it goes down a lot smoother than its edgier predecessors do.
So this is D in Bloodlust ^ They kept the novel illustrator on for character design again and you can really see the difference in this one from both his novel illustration design and the 1985 art in the same pose. It's like a happy middle now. He's still that same recognisable figure, but here he's got a graceful dark beauty even when he's just awkwardly standing there. He blends seamlessly into the gorgeous animation of the film.
Speaking of awkward! I love how simultaneously good and bad he is with the side characters in this film. His interactions with the world around him (and with his trusty hand) are one of the best parts of the film for me. Though the fight scenes make it a close run race.
Speaking of animation!
Holy crap, my dudes!
Everytime I paused it there was an artwork in front of me!
Even the minor antagonists are visually magnificent.
It's been over 20 years since this film released but you wouldn't know it by how clear cut and wow the animation is. The clever use of camera angles and cuts, the stylish art and creative action sequences; all of it contributes to why this film is one of anime's Greatest Classics.
The story is also great and very moving! To the point I don't want to spoil anything.
D's competence in this film kind of gives the impression (either on intentionally or unintentionally) that he's matured and grown in the time since the 1985 film, where he gets hurt more often in combat. If I had to compare it to anything it's like the difference between Batman: Year One and some of the Legends of The Dark Knight, especially arcs like Gothic(#6-10) Destroyer (#27) and Stories (#94). It's still got that same gritty noir vibe but it's also brings a more established/competent feel to the character. The worldbuilding was also insanely good and left me craving more.
It's a love letter to vampire stories, and to the reality of the humans who have to live in a world alongside them.
And, it's another one off the list!
Vampire Hunter D (1985 OVA)
Vampire Hunter D: Bloodlust (2001 movie)
FMA: Brotherhood (OVA collection, 2009–2010)
Kino’s Journey 2003 (13 eps)
Hakujuden (1958)
Rose of Versailles s1 (1979) (10 eps)
Batman: Gotham Knights (2008 movie)
Summer Wars (2009 movie)
Serial Experiments Lain (1998) (13 eps)
Rose of Versailles s2 (10 eps)
Next up:
Let's try Kino's Journey. it's a slowpaced travel story that I've heard little to nothing about but love the look of!
Anime Watchlist #4
So Vampire Hunter D is a great movie that adapts the content of a Japanese novel, it's animation falls into the dated but creative category.
This is D our titular vampire hunter ^ It tells an atmospheric vampire story, with a soundtrack and voice actors (and the sub is infinitely more tolerable than the dub so that's what I watched) that conquer the clunky animation's problems and draw you into the story. The characters are each intriguing in their own right and the main character/hero D is extremely fun. This is a film that isn't afraid to be dramatic or ridiculous and it invites you to take its crazy cast of contorted and vicious monsters as serious threats.
According to wikipedia, the director Toyoo Ashida stated that his intention for the film was to create an OVA that people who had been tired from studying or working hard would enjoy watching, instead of watching something that would make them "feel even more tired".
Yoshitaka Amano, the illustrator of the original novels, acted as character designer for the OVA. However, alternative designs were provided by Ashida (who also acted as the film's animation director), and elements from both artists’ works were combined to create final designs by the animators. Personally I think the novel style illustrations would've been too difficult to animate at this point in time but they're definitely beautiful and it's interesting how they were simplified and adapted for the sake of the anime.
Apparently an acclaimed pop artist called Tetsuya Komuro was responsible for the film's soundtrack, and also performed the film's ending theme, "Your Song", with his fellow members of TM Network. Which makes sense because the soundtrack definitely adds to the film's overall quality, so it's clear they really cared about that part.
The fight scenes are necessarily limited in dynamism because of the older animation but they still manage to stay tense, entertaining and engaging, the writing really goes a long way and you can feel the passion for the project. It's easy to forget that everything from the characters to the stills of the environment are hand-painted.
Don't get me wrong.
It's not a game-changing masterpiece experience in line with Akira or Ghost in The Shell by any measure, but it's a really good film and well worth a watch if you can adapt to the art style and accept the premise of melodramatic spooky vampire threats for the sake of 80 minutes worth of a good time. So that's one off the list:
Vampire Hunter D (1985 OVA)
Vampire Hunter D: Bloodlust (2001 movie)
FMA: Brotherhood (OVA collection, 2009–2010)
Kino’s Journey 2003 (13 eps)
Hakujuden (1958)
Rose of Versailles s1 (1979) (10 eps)
Batman: Gotham Knights (2008 movie)
Summer Wars (2009 movie)
Serial Experiments Lain (1998) (13 eps)
Rose of Versailles s2 (10 eps)
Next up. I'm loving the character of D and want to see more of him so let's go for Bloodlust!
How big of a difference will 16 years make?

So I'm watching fma 2003 with my brothers girlfriend who has only seen fmab and heres some highlights of it:
Her: so does ed still give up alchemy for al in the end?
Me: I'm going to say yes but not exactly. Technically he doesnt have alchemy anymore at the end of the series. And in a roundabout way he does give it up for al. (But he gave up more than alchemy to get al back)
Her: but he still gets al back right?
Me: shrug. Not quite. Kinda. Its complicated. But yes al does come back at the end with a body. (They just aren't together, ed trapped in a war torn world without alchemy, surrounded by the faces of those he once knew from his world, and al doesnt even know what ed did having no memory of the past 4 years and in a body that's 11 again)
Her: are the homunculus are still the same?
Me: uuhhh. No. Not at all. Their origins are not the same. That is very different for a specific reason. And their personalities are a little different too. (They are created through human transmutation to bring back the dead. So their failed resurrection of their mom in a very literal way comes back to haunt them. As one of the homunculus)
Her: hoenheim has to be the same tho, hes the philosophers stone!
Me: actually in this one he used to make philosophers stone's (in order to live longer, so he did in fact orchestrate enough death to get stones enough to transmute himself to another body to live a few times over. So he is centuries old and the cause of alot of deaths)
Her: do ed and winry still get together at the end tho?
Me: hm. Surprisingly enough! no they do not. Ed doesnt get with anyone at the end. And neither does winry.
Her: but all the characters in brotherhood still come up right?
Me: well seeing as how this was done at the beginning of the manga which finished well after the show was done, no they arent in this one sorry
Her: so your telling me that tucker comes back? Scar didnt kill him?
Me: yes and that's not even the worst part about it.
Her: what happens to hughes still does tho? Because that was the saddest and darkest moment in brotherhood, I cry every time.
Me: unfortunately yes. Even more unfortunate is that it isnt the saddest moment in 2003. That has to be the ending.
Her: why is the ending sad? Dont they still get Al's body back? Even though ed gives up alchemy for him? Everyone still gets a happy ending right?
Me: I'm so glad that's what you think happens, so I'm going to let you believe that for a while. (I'm so sorry but there isnt a happy ending, not for this one, at best its bittersweet at worst they're dead, all this fighting all this death so an already ancient old woman could live a bit longer, and at the end al gets a body but not the memories and ed looses alchemy yeah but what he gave up for al was himself and it's an eye for an eye, a soul for a soul but Ed's tainted soul just wasnt enough for the toll, so hes trapped on the other side of the gate which is our world in the 1920s without alchemy without al without any of his friends and family from his world in this one surrounded by the faces of his friends and family but it's not them it's just a mirror of them that doesnt know him and theres no way back to the home you burned down yourself a long time ago and theres no coming back to a world that you traded places with for al, after all that's equivalent exchange, a life for a life.)
#fma#fullmetal alchemist#fma 2003#🐝.watchin fma#🐝.buzz#just....love accidentally getting people into fma 2003 once they realize how different it is from brotherhood like yes come to the dark side#well. its just so much darker than fmab ok. it really it. thats not a bad thing if anything it enders me to it more#fma spoilers#fmab spoilers#fma 2003 spoilers#so much fun to watch fma 2003 with people who have only seen fmab. like you really think this gets a happy ending? for them?? no!!#no one gets a happy ending at best its bittersweet at worst theyre dead.#because boy do so many more characters die in this than fmab. like. almost everyone who isnt a main character really.#and by cos its even more dead! so yeah that hurts.#idk man but i cannot stop having thoughts bout this show ahhhhhh#girl help i got involed in a show literally almost 20 years too late#and everyone wats to talk about the younger sibling no one wants to talk about the older one like ahhhhhhhh#loosing my mind over this show#long post#just cuz it a but long

I never got to watch Sailor Moon as a child, but I really want to get into it because it just seems like something I could get into. But I have no clue where to start. I know there’s the crystal version on Netflix that’s like a reboot, and that there is a manga, but it’s all quite overwhelming. I also feel like if you didn’t watch it as a kid it won’t be the same. Maybe I’m gatekeeping myself haha. Anyway, I just wanted to ask for some input or tips on getting into Sailor Moon!
You absolutely didn't need to get into Sailor Moon as a kid to enjoy it! I got into it as a teenager by watching the subbed original 90s anime online, and I love and enjoy Sailor Moon just as much as anyone who grew up watching it on tv after school. Maybe it won't be as nostalgic, but Sailor Moon is still a very timeless and enjoyable series that can stand on its own merits and doesn't need the nostalgia filter to be enjoyed.
Anyway, I feel like a breakdown of the franchise would be helpful to let you know about the various entries of the series:
The Manga: The originator of the series, running from 1991 to 1997. There are 60 chapters split into 5 story arcs (Dark Kingdom, Black Moon, Infinity, Dream, and Stars). The manga is the source material for the various adaptations that have been created over the years.
The 90s anime: What Sailor Moon is best known for, the original 90s anime ran from 1992 to 1997 and was an international smash hit. There are 200 episodes split into 5 seasons (a nameless season generally called Classic by fans, R, S, SuperS, and Stars; they correspond to each manga arc). There were also 3 movies. The plot of the anime is loosely based on that of the manga, having the same characters and general premise but rarely carrying over exact plots from the manga.
Sailor Moon Crystal: A second anime series that began airing in 2014. Unlike the 90s anime, Crystal is a direct and much more faithful adaptation of the manga (if you're familiar with Fullmetal Alchemist, think of it like Fullmetal Alchemist Brotherhood). The first three arcs of the manga were adapted into 2 seasons (the first two arcs shared a season). The fourth arc was adapted into Sailor Moon Eternal, a series of two anime films that were released in 2021. There hasn't been any news yet on plans to adapt Stars, the fifth and final arc of the manga.
Pretty Guardian Sailor Moon, aka PGSM: A tokusatsu live action tv adaptation of Sailor Moon that ran from 2003 to 2004. There are 49 episodes and the series is exclusively focused on the first story arc. While originally a faithful retelling of the manga story, PGSM eventually splits off into its own direction and introduces many unique plots and character divergences.
Sera Myu: A series of stage musicals, 31 in total, based on Sailor Moon. The first set of musicals ran from 1993 to 2005. In honor of Sailor Moon's 20th anniversary, a new series of musicals began being produced in 2013; the most recent one came out in 2021. The plots of the various musicals vary widely, with some being faithful adaptations of the source material and others having completely unique plots.
As for which entry you should watch/read first... that's a matter of personal preference. The majority of Sailor Moon fans would say you should start with the 90s anime, and I'd probably agree with them. The 90s anime is what made most people fall in love with Sailor Moon, and there's just something special about it.
200 episodes is pretty daunting though; if you feel like that's too much, here's a guide that goes over which episodes are essential viewing (archive[.]ph/9WvI8; remove the brackets, I want this post to show up in the tags so I can't link directly). For what it's worth, I think even the filler episodes are charming and help build a sense of who the characters are (90s Sailor Moon is basically a slice of life anime half the time), but I also understand that not everyone feels that way about filler. You can also always go back and watch the episodes you skip, too.
After the 90s anime, I definitely would recommend reading the manga. It's fantastic and really engaging. Personally, I would recommend reading the manga before watching Crystal/Eternal because they're kind of flawed adaptations and don't always do the manga justice.
PGSM and Sera Myu are for when you're a hardcore fan and want all the Sailor Moon content you can get your hands on, lol. PGSM is goofy at first because of the cheap live action, but once you get used to it it's actually a really great retelling of the Dark Kingdom arc. The series is very character-driven, and by the time you watch PGSM you'll already love all of the characters so it's pretty great to see so much focus on their personalities.
I haven't actually sat down and watched one of the musicals fully, but I do listen to the music from them and I can confirm the songs are certified bangers.
Anyway, I hope this essay of a post helps, lol. Let me know if you have any other questions!

hey! saw ur post bout.. fma? And I think I wanna get into it.... problem is theres like 3 ways to get into it... mind tellin me the best way to get into it?
ahh two fullmetal alchemist related asks in a row ! what a blessing !! (o´▽`o)
if you are a manga reader, i would read the manga first and foremost ! that’s the “original” story, since the author wrote and illustrated it herself.
but if you are not a manga reader, i would start with 03 ! aka “fullmetal alchemist,” the anime! fullmetal alchemist came out in 2003, so it has been nicknamed “03” by the fandom (⁀ᗢ⁀) so by watching this one first, you would basically be watching the show in “chronological” order.
03 starts exactly the same as the manga, but veers off into kind of a different story halfway through. therefore, the plot and ending isn’t the same as the manga, so it’s technically not “canon,” either. the producers/directors of 03 fma began working on this anime before hiromu-chan had finished the manga. so they kind of made up their own version of how they interpretted it would end.
03 is a bit dark, so be warned! it definitely had me emotionally drained (。T ω T。)
i watched brotherhood almost immediately after watching 03. fullmetal alchemist brotherhood was the remake/reboot series created in 2010! kind of similarly to how fruits basket was remade recently (^▽^) so it more closely follows the original story.
if you just want to check it out and don’t intend to spend a ton of time getting into it, i’d recommend just watching brotherhood (─‿‿─)
it’s a wonderful anime with an engaging plot, intense scenes and suppppeerrr lovable characters ! i hope you end up enjoying it as much as i did !!! o(≧▽≦)o as i always say, NOTHING compares to watching fullmetal alchemist for the first time ♡\( ̄▽ ̄)/♡

Julia is a short and petite young woman. She has brown skin, icy blue eyes, and long wavy snow white white hair with two buns tied up on the sides of her head. She wears a long sleeved dress purple and black dress that goes down to just a liver keeps knees that is buttoned up by three gold buttons. She wears long white heeled boots with a yellow stripe going down the side, and wears two black fingerless gloves.
History(Backstory)
TW: CHILD ABUSE, DEATH, DOMESTIC ABUSE, BULLYING
Despite the fact that Julia is a homunculus, she was not actually created by Father(aka the dwarf in the flask). It was actually Julia’s own biological father that turned her into one. 154 years before the events of brotherhood, Julia was born into a royal family and the result of an arranged marriage between her mother and her father who was the ruler of the country they lived in.
Julia’s father was a very ruthless and strict man, doing everything he could to keep the amount of power/influence he had over his country and or other countries, even if it was through shady and corrupt means which was how their country was managed to be real advanced like Xerxes. While also being a king of some-sort, he was also what most would consider a mad scientist(or in this case alchemist). He dedicated his research of alchemy as a means to discover how to make his country’s and kingdom’s influence even more powerful.
He wanted to He wanted to obtain the power of the God him and his kingdom worshipped so he could gain more knowledge about the universe and to expand his empire and thought that he was worthy to be chosen by God to learn the secrets of the universe. Some of the corrupt priests were in on this plan as well because they wanted to do it “in the name of God/for God(aka truth but no one really knew what truth looks like.) Along with thinking that the colonization of other countries was good because it was “in the name of God”. And like most, alchemists wanted to know the key to the magnum opus and Rubedo to make the philosopher’s stone. A certain number of people every couple of years also started going missing. Julia’s father was of course behind it. He secretly would preform illegal an unethical experiments on the population of his country who were poor/lower class along with the lower clsss of the countries he’d colonized to further his research.
Julia unfortunately was not safe from her dad’s experiments. From a very young age, he basically treated her like property, forcing her to go through minor lab tests along with making her study A LOT to test her intelligence, and punished her with abuse if she did anything that he considered “out of line”. He basically forced her to learn how alchemy works, and while Julia was interested in learning alchemy, it felt like a chore learning due to the amount of pushing her father did.
He told her it was just to prepare her for greatness in his own twisted sense of love and that it was in the will of God. He also wanted to gain knowledge from God on how to make Julia was to make her a catalyst for the philosopher stone. To use her as a living weapon.
Whenever Julia would go out whether it be taking her to business meetings or parties/balls She stuck out like a sore thumb. She was mostly shy and quiet. Some of the higher class people and some of the priests thought that she wasn’t fit to rule the kingdom and their children thought the same as well. As a result Julia was not taken seriously by her peers. Despite being the daughter of the ruler of the country she lived in, no one ever stopped messing with her because of the fact that her father simply did not care.
This unfortunately however resulted in her being the target of ridicule. Despite being the daughter of the ruler of the country she lived in, no one ever stopped messing with her because of the fact that her father simply did not care.
He saw it as something to toughen her up and also only saw it as something to toughen her up when she would eventually meet God. It also didn’t help that some people hated Julia simply for the fact that her dad was an awful person and took it out on her. Julia’s mother was no better either. She was unfazed at the abuse her husband did to her daughter. She hated Julia’s father for the obvious reason that she was forced to marry him for political gain and the fact that she was being abused by him as well. She was kinder towards Julia back when she was an infant, but as the years went by, she began to grow a disdain towards her daughter.
Around the time when Julia was able to walk and talk better on her own, She started to act cold an uncaring towards her. Whenever Julia would try to get close to her mom or show her mom physical affection, she was either ignored or physically shoved away and or hit/slapped away. Julia never understood why her mother hated her so. That’s one of the main reasons why she hated her father. For making her own mother hate her. She also never really saw her mom all that much, though whenever she did, her mom would avoid her like the plague. She feared both of her parents due to all of this.
Julia often used fantasy and romance novels to escape her bleak reality. She often dreamed about the idea of falling in love with a prince of some sort that would treat her with care and rescue her from the hellish nightmare she called her life. And as if things couldn’t get any worse for Julia, at the mere age of eight, she was the victim of a lab accident that left her bed ridden for weeks. The accident caused her once black hair to turn a ghostly white and her brown eyes an icy blue.
When she was able to go out again, the ridicule much worse due to her newfound appearance. She was called names like “witch”, “white haired witch” and “ghost girl”. Julia’s new look also caused her mom to view her as some sort of evil deity/spirit that had come to kill her. A bad omen. All of this obviously broke Julia even more. When Julia was around nine, she found her mom trying to escape one night when everyone else in the mansion was asleep. Just before she could leave, Julia grabbed onto her.
She begged and pleaded with tears in her eyes for her mom to take her with her and away from that monster she called a father. Though of course like all the other times whenever she got physically close to her mom, she was denied. She was kicked off of her mom, and her mother told Julia straight to her face that she was the worst thing that had ever happened to her next to her father and how she wanted nothing to do with her father or her ever again and called her daughter an abomination. After that, she escaped into the night. A month after what happened that night, Julia’s mother was eventually found and taken back to her dad after a search all over the country was sent out for her.
She had been having an affair with another man and they had planned to flee the country and start a new life together. Her father was of course enraged when he found out about this. And as a result he killed her. Julia was in the room when it all happened meaning she’d witnessed her dad murder her mom right in front of her. The very last words Julia’s mom said to her and her dad was,
“You bastard…I hate you! Both of you! Especially you, you little shit! You unclean abomination! You ruined any chance I had at happiness, I curse the very day I forced you out of my womb! If only… if only you hadn’t been born I could’ve been happy… I hope you suffer a fate far worse than death.”
And then she was shot in the head and died instantly as a result. Her death was covered up as a suicide, and the man she had an affair with was publicly executed for committing “treason”. As the years went by, Julia’s view on humanity became a bit skewered. She viewed all people as selfish and cruel with no empathy left in them. Though despite having this mindset, the other half of her clung onto hope. Hope that there were good people out there. Hope that things would be better.
During Julia’s late teenage years, her father was starting to make what he considered a “breakthrough” in his research. That being he finally figured out how to make a philosopher stone and how to open the gate of God(or truth). He planned out how to do the transmutation throughly. On the day it would be enacted,it was going to be disguised as a ceremony to the kingdom. A country wide celebration with festivals and all sort of festivities. It was called The Day of Prosperity and it would take place a couple of weeks after Julia’s twenty first birthday. Though unknowingly, this would lead to his downfall of not just himself, but the entire kingdom and country as a whole.
In the months leading up to that day, the necessary amount of crests were made made from certain pinpoints using the countries he’d colonized in which some people in said countries were slaughtered for the plan organized by the corrupt priests for once again “in the name of God”. Julia’s father already viewed the countries he had colonized to be uncouth and thought it was necessary to convert them to his beliefs. It was no different from when he slaughtered the people in the countries he waged for war on that he was colonizing way before the plan.
Weeks after Julia’s twenty first birthday she was tested on her knowledge on alchemy, in which she passed of course. Julia herself had a bad feeling about what was happening. Something didn’t feel right to her. And for good reason.
On the day of prosperity, Julia woke up on the floor of the throne room of her home with her arms and legs cuffed together. She was in the center of a giant transmutation circle on the floor with her father standing in the center right next to her. Julia asked him what the hell was going on, and he responded by saying that this was the greatness he’s prepared her for her whole life along with him finally finding a way to gain the power of God.
Julia still not knowing what was going to happen to her tried to struggle and free herself but it was no use. She couldn’t transmute anything to free herself not only because she was bound, but the shackles she was bound in were special alchemy cuffs that prevented her from performing any sort of alchemy, so she was trapped. Julia’s dad used his own blood along with Julia’s and smeared it on the circle.
Long story short when the circle was activated, the process was basically kinda like how Hoenheihm became immortal(minus the dwarf in the flask). He had opened the gate. Billions of people died all over the country, and the entire country’s souls were transformed into the philosophers stone and the stone’s energy that was then fused inside of Julia’s heart.(though her father did not. Truth sent her dad into the gate for his crimes for not only trying to do human transmutation in reverse, but also for the horrible things he’d done to others in the name of Truth even though Truth never stood for any of Julia’s father’s corrupt beliefs at all). Everything for Julia went black. And then a moment later she woke up infront of the gate and saw Truth. Julia was basically on the verge of death, and because it clearly wasn’t Julia’s fault, Truth decided to give her a second chance at life, but she had to give up part of her humanity in return due to the law of equivalent exchange.
Julia was hesitant at first, but she didn’t want to die. Especially not like this, so she reluctantly agreed. When she woke up back in the living world she was back in the throne room next to the corpse of her father. Distraught, scared, and confused, she ran outside to discover that it was raining and saw the lifeless corpses of the country’s population that littered the ground.
Julia looked at her reflection in a nearby puddle and sow that she had strange red markings on her arms(though these red markings weren’t the red nodes that Lust, Envy, Greed, and the other Homunculi had). And to her horror she also saw that on her right shoulder where she was cut was completely healed and in its place was the mark of the ouroboros.
Julia knew what a homunculus was, and ike most alchemists or alchemists in training, she learned what a homunculus was back when she was learning and studying alchemy as a child. It was clear to her what the mark of the ouroboros that was now on her shoulder meant in that very moment.
She wasn’t human anymore.
She ran away and never looked back. She spent her now extended lifespan traveling to new places while also trying to find way to make herself human again. But after an entire decade of looking for answers, she was unsuccessful and had gave up. She also didn’t know how to control her newfound powers during that time, but luckily she eventually managed to do so and was even able to make her ouroboros tattoo disappear whenever she wanted to and the same went for those red markings. She decided to use her newfound powers to help people throughout her travels.
She kept her telekinesis on the down low, but she was able to disguise her elemental manipulation powers as alchemy since she was able to preform alchemy without a transmutation circle since she saw the gate.
After decades of traveling she decided to settle down in Amestris and live there. She applied to become a state alchemist(this was after the ishvalin war had ended btw) so that she could help others in that country as well. Julia easily got mistaken for an ishvalin due to her white hair and brown skin which she had to refute multiple times. It took a lot of hard work but she passed the entrance exam, though wasn’t assigned on military duty. She was basically assigned in a position in an agency to where her job was to take commissions from people who needed help with situations that only state alchemists could solve.
Her feelings towards the military were and are pretty mixed. On the other hand they were no different from the people from her homeland. Ruthless, cruel, and no empathy towards others. But on the other hand, she’s met some pretty decent people when working there. One of her very first friends she made while working there was Riza Hawkeye. And she eventually befriended Sheska as well.
She even had a bit of a crush on Roy Mustang at one point, but after she saw how close him and Riza were she decided to back off. But she eventually got over it(Roy sorta knew but didn’t bother to say anything). And she does eventually meet the other characters during the events of the anime like Ed, Alphonse, and yes, Envy.
In the fma 2003 universe everything is basically the same except the way she became a hybrid was due to her being half dead/on the verge of death(yes her dad basically nearly killed her for his own personal gain just and “in the name of God”like in the mangahood universe). Despite going through the gate, by some miracle she was still able to keep her soul(she was sorta able to do it through sheer willpower kinda like what Envy did when he went through the gate to get to our world so he could kill Hoenheihm.)Though in exchange the gate took part of her humanity away, which is how she was also able to become half
homunculus as well as the first homunculus to ever be able to perform alchemy before Wrath
And that concludes Julia’s introduction and backstory. I hope you guys enjoy rping or interacting with me in general.

Why Both FMAB and FMA03 are good and should be treated as Independent Stories:
I will go on the record of saying that Appreciate and Love FMA as a whole and love both series for what they are. And while it may sound like a broken record saying things like this... there’s still hateful words against those who like one over the other. So, I’m here to make this post addressing that both FMA2003/03 and Brotherhood are great in their own way and should be respected as their own individual stories.
Also warning there will be obvious spoilers.
What I liked about the Original (FMA03/2003) Series:
I watched 03 before delving into Brotherhood, and even before reading the manga. Now, I know Brotherhood and Manga fans are the small minority of the fandom, while 03/2003 fans make up the majority. That being said, many of these people simply can't get used to 03 after watching Brotherhood.
However, for me, I was happy because: A) I got more FMA to watch, and B) The differences in 03/2003 simply made it even more fun to watch, so for it was no trouble getting used to this anime.
But if I were to be specific of what I liked, I’d say I liked the following about FMA03/2003:
Characterization of the Protagonists and all the 'good' guys: The show heavily focuses on the relationship and tragedy of Elric Brothers, and 03/2003 portrays it much better with such a deeper level. The relationship between both brothers is intimate, and it feels like a genuine sibling bond. I also enjoy the fact that the anime shows that even if Ed follows his ideals, he, like any human, can break away from them under severe pressure, which was beautifully shown in the 5th laboratory arc. As for other characters: Scar in this version is a total opposite of his Brotherhood counterpart. He is written realistically in the 2003/03 anime. His absolute hatred for the military is more legit, and he feels morally grey in this anime. Izumi Curtis for me was also portrayed better in this version. Meanwhile, other Characters like Roy, Winry and Alex felt the same to me throughout both versions--so, not much change there.
Worldbuilding: The 2003/03 anime does a fantastic job at portraying the widespread effects of war and politics, Alchemy, etc. and how it has affected the people of the FMA World. For example, in Episode 16, “That Which is Lost”, Ed meet, a guy who had lost his limb while working as a soldier and was reluctant to use an automail prostetic because he wanted to “retain his wound”. Now, this episode itself was more so filler and didn’t really matter to the main plot of the story in itself; however, I feel that it was added to series to portray the depth of the FMA World, and how everyone has different reactions to the events that happened in the 2003/03 anime. Also, many of the events and how they unfold in this anime seem to parallel the middle east, which just makes all this feel realistic and provides some occasional social commentary which is quite nice. I also like how the first few episodes take their time to slowly and, with great subtlety, develop their world.
Thematic Depth: FMA2003/03 is dark, grim and kind of realistic--more so compared to Brotherhood. While, both versions of the anime deal with some important and mature themes, FMA2003/03 takes it to the next level. The 2003/03 series focuses on the Law of Equivalent Exchange, and shows how putting blind trust in it is a terrible thing to do. The show also focuses on how obsession, a denial of reality, and the inability to move on can be a bad thing. Moreover, sometimes life just simply isn't fair, and we should accept it; however, always try to improve what we have. All in all, we have to understand the consequences of our actions. That life is uncertain, and sometimes we don't get everything, and even we pay a price for it. All of these themes mixed in with the meaningful dialogues and the dark tone, made me appreciate this anime. For example, in episode 48, when Roy and Ed talk for the last time, that’s the pivotal point that brings all these themes together.
A Good Start: The Show had a better start than Brotherhood, simply because 1). We have more time with Maes Hughes and Shou Tucker, and 2). The Liore arc. Despite BONES studio and it’s tendency to create anime too early *when the mangaka is barely halfway through their series), they made it work, and, with the material they had, the 2003/03 series was given enough time to bloom. The 2003/03 series was simply immersive and very emotional, especially during The Curtis Arc, as an example.
Soundtrack and The Art Direction: I feel like both are equally good. However, I will go on the record of saying that I don’t think “art style” is what makes a series, nor is it an important factor. It’s nothing more than glorified “eye candy” However, for the sake of argument (especially since the “art style” is the first thing that “03 Stans” mention) I’ll be adding it in here. Both the 2003/03 and Brotherhood series have some amazing and beautiful orchestral OSTs in their respective soundtracks; thus, it added to the immersion of their respective series. In FMA2003/03, the color palette is very unique, sometimes it feels dull but it just suits the dark tone of the series.
All in all, I am impressed by a lot of aspects of the 2003/03 anime series, but as much I love and respect it, there are lot of things this anime messed up and I will note that as well.
The antagonists were... Meh: While I really love and enjoy the direction and depth BONES Studio added to the Homunculi... some of the other antagonists could have been better (or just not added at all imo). For example, Frank Archer... he has no reason being there except for convenient plot device to the point it feels forced. Though, him becoming that weird cyborg always makes me laugh just because of how dumb of a character he became because of it. Speaking of which, him becoming a cyborg was just... weird. It was like the Studio staff were trying to make him “cool” by making him into some crossover of The Terminator and Two-Face from Batman, but it just failed. As for Zolf Kimblee... He is still sadistic and likes making things explode, much like his Brotherhood Counterpart. But... that was it. Other than that, he was just boring. Him and Archer were both just the staple 90s Kids Cartoon Villains; not much to them except “Muahahaha I’m evil”. Now Dante... I’d say that she’s a good villain to an extent. Her as a villain is very subjective within the fandom, depending on who you ask. While I believe that she could have been just as great a villain as Father, her character was rushed and her goals were a bit vague and unexplored. I like how, like with Father, she had ties Hohenheim; however, that backstory and those connections were introduced a little late. So, in the end, she just came across as more of the generic Vindictive Ex-Wife, and just a generic female villain. As for the Homunculi... I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again: I LOVED their portrayal in 2003/03. They were the “saving grace” of the entire team of the villains within the 2003/03 series. My favorite of the bunch were Lust and Greed--namely Lust, because of her ties with Scar. Envy came at a close second, but only seemed so because of a way to back up Dante as a villain, and the other Homunculi seemed a bit more underdeveloped as characters.
The Plot's quality drops after episode 35- Okay don't get me wrong. The first 35 episodes for me were 100/100. After that? a 60/100. Why? Because everything after that point feels contrived and feels forced. It's as tho, they are trying to do everything they can, even if it doesn't weave in, to make the brother's life miserable. Archer doesn't die and pops up, with his automail? Alphonse is there to be turned into a bomb, and become a philosophers stone. Okay, but why does this feel so forced? Also, can we talk about Nazi Shit? Now, I feel the brothers being separated is the perfect ending to this anime thematically and I have nothing against it, but A Nazi gate? Why? It was so sudden and pointless. It was never foreshadowed. They just showed it to make it as tragic as possible, because they didn't know of any other way to twist the plot, without convenient and totally forced plot devices. Also, How can Dante make Gluttony Mindless? Why is Juliet Douglass's Secret so obvious, when it can be fatal if leaked? Plot- Holes, Also, why are the Homunculli named the way they are? It just doesn't make sense. Also, FMA's Plot has an air of mystery to it, but it doesn't execute properly. I don't hate the end, I just felt disappointed, because the buildup towards it was terrible.
Now, I give a bit of grace concerning how the plot sort of dropped off and felt rushed halfway through, as well as the characters being underdeveloped and rushed. After all, Studio Bones was making up the majority of the material and took it in their own direction. Some factors to all of these cons in FMA2003/03 could be because of the Studio’s lack of a budget to flesh the characters and plot out more. Or, they had created so much additional material for this series that it became overwhelming.
As a writer, I can attest to the fact that “Character Overload” or “Element Overload” can either make or break a series, depending on how you handle it. That being said, there need to be a balance when it comes to these factors.
However, FMA2003/03 ended around 2004-05, So what we got is what we have.
Now, with that out of the way, let’s get on to the analysis of FMA: Brotherhood:
Characters: There isn’t a single character in this version of the series that I can choose as a “favorite”. Because, honestly? I lile them all. They’re all well developed and lovable in their own way, and have their own demension of depth to them. No, they’re not as deep as they aare in FMA2003/03, but from a writer’s perspective, that helps keep a balance with the overall plot of the stories. Now, some minor characters were just outrageous, but not to the level of boring (like 03!Kimblee and Archer), for example... Darius and Heinkel. There isn’t a vast difference in Brotherhood’s and 2003/03's cast of characters. However, if I had to note a difference, FMA2003/03′s characters were are more on the edge of realistic and Brotherhood’s were just... Loveable. However, that doesn’t mean that one counterpart of a character is better/worse than another. Both are quite memorable in their own way. Of course, in my opinion Brotherhood's villains are just better than 03's villains. Sure, the Homunculi aren’t given as much depth, but, they have redeeming qualities near the end of their time (i.e. Envy, and GreedLing). When Father was first introduced... his character made me think of how Dante started out, and I was worried that his character would end up just as rushed and he would just be the generic cliche Shounen villain. By the Promised Day Arc, however, I was surprised. Yeah, Father was still very shounen-y villain, but still a pretty darn good villain. I feel his backstory, and how he discarded all his human qualities which led to the creation of Homunculi was well put together, and I felt the concept how he created Alchemy in Amestris, while Hohenhime helped build Alkahestry in the east was well put together, and helped build the world of FMA (literally). To put it simply, his character was much more interesting than Dante, because it was fleshed out more. The Homunculi were awesome as well, Lust did her job, Pride and Wrath were simply awesome, GreeLing's development from an anti-villain to anti-hero was exceptionally well written and not the cliche anti-hero, which I can appreciate. Envy is the character you love to hate. And Gluttony and Sloth did their Part as Well. While I enjoyed 03′s portrayal of the homunculi, I felt like they only fleshed out some for that series (i.e. Lust) while others were just left to fall flat. With Brotherhood, all the Homunculi were evenly balanced out in their characters, not too much depth and not too little. Solf Kimblee was still the sadistic baster, but at least his entire personality was more explored this time, and I liked how they portrayed his psyche as an added affect to why he has his views.
Plot: Bortherhood’s plot was more fluid and weaved in seamlessly. As a lover of all things continuity... Brotherhood did it right, and every time I find an analysis of a teeny tiny subtle continuity detail (i.e. Ed’s gash on his forehead that lasts a few episodes), I get a writer-gasm! Sure, there were few plot devices and filler here and there. But the plot in gneeral wasn’t rushed or choppy, nor did it leave any holes in it. The way Brotherhood portrays it’s plot is to keep you as engaged as possible, adding some silly comic relief here and there to balance out the dramatic intensity every so often. Unlike 2003/03 where is was just one depressing and dark element after another, Brotherhood added in the comic relief points not and again to give it’s audience a break. And, that’s what I really appreciate, and think is a great story writing technique. All in all the Brotherhood series is literal binge-watch material
A Great Shounen: Many Shounen anime have their Arcs for the purpose of portraying the progress of a character, and keep introducing new villains; however, depsite this, there is rarely a sense of mystery, intrigue or a moving plot in a Battle Shounen Anime. What Brotherhood did was just that, except make it more digestible (and not super long like Naruto or One Piece), and added a great thematic exploration. For a shounen it was quite deep, the plot structure was more like seinen, and characters were awesome. In a way, we got everything we could in a Shounen anime that only lasted a little over 50 episodes: Depth, plot, characters in a shounen.
Thematic Exploration: Both FMA 2003/03′s and Brotherhood’s themes are the same, but Brotherhood makes it a bit more lighter. All the while, it also manages to raise questions on additional themes: revenge, truth, knowledge, sacrifice, worth of a human life, and many other things.
Soundtrack and Animation: Same as the analysis in the part of FMA 2003/03, and, once again... I will restate that I personally don’t believe that art style is what’s important to a series. It’s nothing more than glorified “eye candy”. However, for the sake of this analysis, I will be adding it in here. While Brotherhood’s art style and animation is more simplistic, it’s much easier to create those dynamic poses and expressions on an animation level. While FMA2003/03 did have it’s dynamic moments, it was mostly only during battle scenes or the really heavy moments in the series. Brotherhood maintains it’s art style through the series and keeps it a balance, so that some scenes aren’t too much animation but also not too little. And, both FMA2003/03′s and Brotherhood’s OST Soundtracks are beautiful orchestral pieces that really add additional effect to a scene that the respective series are trying to portray.
A sense of conclusion: A lot of Shounen Anime get prematurely cancelled, most Seinen end in a bittersweet manner. That’s why FMA2003/03′s ending with the fate of the Elric Bros was a bit more preferable for those who like a more realistic ending. But, I enjoy a story with a more conclusive ending that wraps all the plot points up together without leaving too many holes. Yeah, the “happy ending” of Brotherhood is cliche, but “happy endings” wouldn’t be “happy endings” if they weren’t. Not to mention, those types of endings are rare, because people really don’t want to write them, and, when they do, they’re rarely done well. Ed’s entire charcter arc wrapping up to where he swallows his pride as an Alchemist and gives up his Alchemy to bring his brother back is both wholesome and satisfying, because, through the show, it shows his progression and growth from beginning to end. And, having an arrogant character obsessed with Alchemy give it up and learn to humble himself because of it.. it’s really uplifting.
Now let's talk about the Cons within the Brotherhood series, they aren't a lot, but still, they did affect my experience quite a lot.
Overuse of Comic Relief: While the use is a nice balance to the already dark and dismal atmosphere of the series, it felt a bit overused. So much so that some emotional moments were inconvenienced by the use of that kind of humor. It was a bit much and created dissonance with the tone the scene was trying to portray. Now, it worked more in the Manga, because of the more visual gag of it, but, sometimes the visuals within the manga don’t translate as well to an animated one.
A Rushed First Half: While FMA 2003/03 began “In Media Res” with it’s first episode and then started a “flashback episodic arc” with the next handful of episodes.. Brotherhood just jumped right into it. While, yes, it was a better balance to not have the characters’ depth right at the beginning (slowly revealing it as the show goes on), the first half of Brotherhood was 0-100 through just the first few episodes. To the point it feels like the audience has to catch it’s bearings. But, once you get on the same page, it’s enjoyable from there.
So what’s the Point of this Ted Talk-esq FMA Post?
I’m sick and tired of seeing 03 Stans and MangaHood Stans fighting each other over just the smallest detail, especially when 03 Stans decided to bring leftist politics into it for no reason.
Personally, I just appreciate the fact that both series exist, ever since I've got in the franchise, it has become a part of my life, and still to this day is part of my life. Sure, I’m forever going to be part of this fandom.. but, I still see the beauty that peeks through the ruins and ashes of destruction now and then. I appreciate both series. Sure, I do prefer Brotherhood more, and get called a “Nazi” just because of it (ironic considering FMA: CoS was the movie sequel to 03... -__- ) , but 03 was excellent as well in it’s own way. It was very involving while FMAB was engaging. Both shows are something which you can learn something from and get attached to.
All in all, comparing both shows is okay, that's what I did here, but having a debate over which one is better isn’t just inherently bad... it’s TOXIC. Both series have their pros and cons, and they’re starkly different from each other. They’re two sides of the same coin. But, most importantly they are extremely important and impactful, so Pls don't have death battles over which one is better, don't say bad things about any fanbase, be respectful, and most importantly watch both and try to appreciate them. Because trust me liking both is a pretty darn good feeling.

What are your top 5 fics by kudos?
To nobody's surprise, my top 5 fics by kudos are (in order) the first 5 parts to the Jedi Shmi AU.
Do you respond to comments, why or why not?
Oof. I used to. But I ended up spiralling pretty badly uhhhh a couple years ago and had to stop. I feel like I should reply to comments, especially those wonderful long ones, but even though I do this whole writing thing, I always have a really hard time, like, knowing what to say to them? Like "akjsdfk;jf thank you" always feels inadequate, but writing a well thought-out reply takes a stupidly large amount of brainpower, and I'll leave them marked as unread if I want to reply to them and then they just accumulate in my inbox and I end up spiralling again, since it just continues to exist as a mental load of something I have to do and the avoidance just gets bigger and bigger the longer I put it off and–
look, I just get into my own head too much about it. I respond to questions, usually. I love all the comments but I can't let myself overthink it, and the easiest way to do that is to not let myself reply.
What's the fic you've written with the angstiest ending?
I guess Obi-Wan’s Terrible Horrible No-Good Very Bad Life doesn’t count because it... doesn’t have an ending yet? and I don’t know how angsty that ending is going to be. Even Composing Hallelujah doesn’t count because it ends happier than in canon, even though it’s... y’know, not exactly happy-ending.
Do you write crossovers? If so what is the craziest one you've written?
Hahaha I don't do crossovers often, but I have done them, and the craziest one I've actually written is probably my Sailor Moon/Puella Magi Madoka Magica fic. It’s especially crazy because I’ve only seen a few episodes of sailor moon lol
Have you ever received hate on a fic?
lmao YEP
There's this one, like Ender's Game/Doctor Who fic I wrote and posted on FFN back in middle school. And it got a ton of hate, as far as I can tell mostly from the same person, talking about like, how bad and non-canonical and whatever it was. And when I migrated over to AO3, I reposted it there too. This was in like 2012. The migration, at least, the fic was written in... idk, 2010?
And then. In 20-fucking-19.
I got a comment saying "Terrible. Makes zero sense. It’s like the author threw canon out the window and took a shit on it." like lmao what??????
(for reference: https://archiveofourown.org/works/361723?show_comments=true#comments and https://www.fanfiction.net/r/7621672/)
(like what the actual fuck was this person on)
Do you write smut? If so what kind?
Not any that I've been brave enough to post. And… also… nothing that I've actually written more than a few paragraphs on… I keep chickening out. I did recently make a deal with a friend, though, so… we'll see. If I do, it’s probably going to be quite dark, because that’s the kind of smut I like to read.
Have you ever had a fic stolen?
I sincerely hope not.
Have you ever had a fic translated?
Yes!! See how the blackbird walks into russian and just recently In all your wanderings into french!!!
Have you ever co-written a fic before?
I've tried. It's never gone… especially well? I don't think any of them ever actually ended up complete, they all just petered out after a while.
What's your all time favorite ship?
I don't really have an "all-time favorite" anything, let alone a ship. I'm a horrible multishipper and I'm going to cause problems on purpose
What's a WIP that you want to finish but don't think you ever will?
Sigh. Probably my intricate, 30-something-k unpublished Silmarillion Helcaraxë fic. It has so many moving pieces. I know where most of them end up but it's going to take so much effort to get there
What are your writing strengths?
writing
What are your writing weaknesses?
writing
What are your thoughts on writing dialogue in other languages in a fic?
Hm. Given that I mostly write fic for SF/F, I don't run into the "real life languages" problem a lot. I end up working with conlangs of various complexity, for the most part, and for those… I'll sprinkle in a word or two if it makes sense, especially swear words and stuff. But for most of those conlangs, grammar is… less well-determined than vocabulary, so I almost never do phrases, let alone full sentences. I'll just put it in italics (if the POV character understands it) or say "and they said something unintelligible in [x language]" or the like.
What was the first fandom you wrote for?
I think………. let me check the dates on this. I think the actual first fanfiction I wrote was sometime in fifth or sixth grade, for this "Zenda" book series I read?? Either that or Harry Potter.
What's your favorite fic you've written?
A big shout-out goes to The Lichtenberg Figure, which I can’t believe is the only Tamora Pierce fanwork I’ve published, but for my favorite... it's gotta be Messenger. Like, looking back, there is a bunch about it that I am very not happy with, and a lot of things I think didn't come across the way I wanted, and things I would not write the same way now, years down the line, as I have very differently balanced understandings of… well, a lot of these same characters. But, fuck, I just can't let go of Mandalorian!Beru.
No pressure tags!! @apaladinagain @determamfidd @faeymouse @lumateranlibrarian (apologies if you’ve already done this one and I haven’t seen it!)

2020-2021 Animation Watch(ed)list
I haven’t posted about animation in a while that I remember, and I know a lot of my followers are into it as much as me so I decided to make a list of the animated movies and series I watched on the past year or so, coupled with my short, spoilerless take on them. Enjoy!
Organized by
Things I saw for the first time
Things I rewatched
Under a cut for the sake of your dashboards! PS: I have not added any images yet. If you are interested in knowing more about the visuals of these movies, I might make an old fashion ask-prompted imageset list.
Part One: Things I saw for the first time
The Bear’s Famous Invasion of Sicily
Movie, 2019, Italian/French
9/10, a delightful little movie with amazing visuals. It feels like an animated picture book.
One of those “plot is in the title” media! I had never heard of this before but was heavily recommended it by my family members, who all loved it! It’s a sweet story, nothing groundbreaking but the unique colorful visual style alone makes it worth it.
The Castle of Cagliostro
Movie, 1979, Japanese
10/10. Reminded me of all the books i loved reading as a child
I assume its because it’s so old and the art style and themes are so different that it gets little to no love compared to other Ghibli movies, which is a shame! It’s fun with an endearing cast and as always, great animation and music
Mushishi
Series, 2006, Japanese
10/10 three episodes in I knew it was going to be my favorite series ever
One of the few things I’ve seen I’ll describe as life-changing. It’s absolutely lovely but never toots its own horn about it. Humble, calming, emotional and surprisingly mature. It’s pretty impossible to binge due to how intense the experience is. I just want to walk in the forest now...
FMA: Brotherhood
Series, 2009, Japanese
6/10 Dissapointing adaptation of a classic story
I read the manga for this when I was in middle school and remembered loving it. The animated version does an ok job of presenting the characters and worldbuilding and has some nice action scenes but overall looks really damn cheap and just. Not very good. Seeing I already knew most of the plot I did not have the element of discovery that made me marvel so much reading the original. It’s still a nice series but I really recommend reading it instead.
Code Lyoko (s1+2)
Series, 2003, french
3/10. 1.5 being for the opening song alone
This show sucks ass if I hadn’t been watching this with my bestie I would have dropped it two episodes in. The art style is ugly the stories are always the same and the first season has a (later removed thank fucking god) LITERAL “erase any consequences” button as a plot device in every episode. If you watch it for one thing let it be the nostalgia factor of early 00s Vidya Game Plot
The Legend of Hei
Movie, 2019, Chinese
7/10. Impressive visuals and a poor story
I finally watched this, peer pressured by the load of gifsets on my dashboard! It’s a sweet movie with really impressive animation, sometimes a bit too flashy for my taste (the action sequences go so ham they become not very readable...) but the story was just ok? The setting is barely explained and you are instead bombarded with vague epicspeech about powers and stuff that made me fondly remember Kingdom Hearts lol but that asides it’s a really good time! I need to watch more Chinese movies the few I know are just delightfully off the shits in how they approach action and I love that
Hunter x Hunter
Series, 1999, Japanese
9/10. Superior to the recent one!
I first got introduced to the series via the 2011 one. Comparatively, the 99 series focuses way less on action and way more on the characters, which I love because that fits my personal preferences! Despite mediocre filler episodes and some weird slight pointless plot changes, what it changes from the original manga doesn’t have much of an impact on the characters. The animation quality isn’t always consistent including a huge art style change for an arc (???) but it’s overall pretty nice. The series really shines in the last arc it adapts.
Oban Star-racers
Series, 2006, Japanese/french
9/10 a lovely surprise
This series is completly obscure despite having been created by people famous for their other series (Cowboy Bebop, Code Lyoko that i can name) and it’s a crime! It’s a kids show but without being stupid about it who tells the story of an inter-planetary race. If you liked that one scene in the star wars prequels you know what I mean. It’s got surprisingly nice animation for a TV series, and some truly great character design. The art style is a bit unique in a not for everyone sense, but I didn’t mind it much. It’s also THE most offensively 2000s series i’ve seen in terms of visuals. y2k kids assemble
The Little Prince and the Eight-Headed Dragon
Movie, 1963, japanese
8/10. Classic fairytale format with incredible visuals
Watched this for the art style because I know it inspired Samurai Jack, and it delievered! I dont’ have much to say about this one, it’s a very simply film but it’s sweet. For my pirates out there if you want to find it in good quality with english subtitles it’s VERY hard to find. If you just want to see the looks of it, it’s on Youtube with portugese subs.
We now enter the Gobelins Shorts Zone....!
My Friend Who Glows In The Dark
10/10 makes me cry each time
Pure delight...great animation writing everything. A little short about death and friendship but not in the way you imagine!
Colza
9/10
Visual treat...homely and nice :) not far from a 10 but a 9 because nothing about it is that groundbreaking
Sundown
9/10
If you’ve ever been ten minutes from failing a group project because of a single dude you will REALLY enjoy this. Loved the colors and personality
T’as vendu mes rollers?
10/10
It’s SUCH a sweet little short I loved that one so much
Dix-huit kilomètres trois
10/10
Surprisingly well written dialog. Visuals are great but the humanity of the characters carries this to another level
Un diable dans la poche
9/10
Amazing visuals and the most tense/creepy of Gobelin shorts i’ve ever seen. Chilling
La bestia
8/10
I had some issues with the pacing. Interesting story and visuals choices but I was not fond of the art style
Goodbye Robin
5/10
Confusing but predictable. Both at once??? Yes!
Le retour des vagues
6/10
Cool animation stuff but felt pretty pointless
***
Part Two: Things I rewatched
Ruben Brandt: Collector
Movie, 2018, Hungarian
10/10. Underrated as hell
Watched this fully blind for the first time in an animated festival and rewatched it with friends. It’s a crime I never see anyone talking about it given the amount of whining I see about the lack of both adult animation and 2D movies? This film is a unique love letter to art in the form of a weird mix of charming crime story and psychological horror with amazing visuals. I recommend watching it blind and also buying it to show appreciation for how nice it is!!! WATCH THIS MOVIE...
Mononoke
Series, 2007, Japanese
10/10 Visual/storytelling masterpiece in the weird shit departement
If you can stomach intense stuff watch this. The visuals are incredibly unique and beautiful and under the jewel tones and art direction high takes it’s a really cool horror series. My only obstacle to enjoying it the first time I saw it was how dense it is - simply put, it’s so...culturally Japanese it’s not very accessible to me who doesn’t know anything about the culture? Watching it for the second time helped understanding the stories more!
Corto Maltese in Siberia
Movie, 2002, french
9/10 but really close to ten. A great adaptation!
I’m a huge fan of the original comic so I entered this a biiiittttt suspicious it would suck but it was a really pleasant surprise! It has all the wonder and charm of the original and the animation was surprisingly good for the little budget. If you’re not familiar with the series, it’s a sort of geopolitical action/adventure movie but with it’s own really poetic vibe to it. It’s almost impossible to find online but happens to be fully on YouTube so go ham I guess?
Redline
Movie, 2009, Japanese
10/10 cinema was invented for this, actually
Every review of this movie i’ve seen gives it five stars and starts by talking about how immensly stupid it is. I’m no different. It’s a masterpiece of escalating energy with the depth of a puddle and it fucking rules. It’s free on YouTube too so there really is no excuse to not watch it. Watched it for the first time on a huge cinema screen and despite this my second rewatch on my small laptop was as/even more enjoyable. If you watch this stoned with friends you might travel to another dimension
Spirited Away
Movie, 2001, Japan
10/10 deserves the love it gets
I watched this a single time as a kid and had little memory of it! I mean it’s Ghibli you know it’s going to be good as hell but this one rly shines in how colorful and detailed it is and in it’s world! It made me remember I had a huge crush on the dragonboy as a kid. I’m gay now
Kung-fu Panda (1&2)
Movie, Usa
10/10. KFP fucking rules
Honestly my favorite franchise of the whole disney/dreamworks/pixar hydra. It’s fun as hell, doesn’t skip a single beat and has amazing animation and character designs. If something is a good time I will not care if it’s deep or not and boy I fucking love these movies
Sinbad, Legend of the Seven Seas
Movie, 2003, Usa
5/10 Some great some really bad and overall generic
I tend to hate american cinema and this includes that era of animation I have no nostalgia for. Sinbad is in a weird place because I love adventure stories and the visuals of the movie absolutely deliver but it’s very predictable and TANKED by the addition of the female character, pushed in your face as “look we have woman!!!” despite her writing being misogynistic as hell lol. The evil goddess rules tho. This movie would have been a solid 9 if instead of the girl the two dudes had kissed
#j#animation#if you want links to these ill provide but not for the indie ones that arent free#i have no remorse p*rating disney or a movie thats over 50 but if its recent and underrated just legally get it!!!

Hello! It's the anime anon! I sent you another ask a few days ago so I just wanted to make sure you recieved it, cause tumblr is a mess (if you did, no rush to reply)
I did! I think I got two? asks abt animes, I haven't had the Energy to answer much the last few days but ty for reminding me!
I think these are the asks you sent:
If you’re looking for an anime with complex and strong female characters I recommend Revolutionary Girl Utena. It’s super weird but absolutely mind blowing. The entire series is available on YouTube if you wanna watch (I recommend subs because the dub was made in the 90s and is uhhhhhh bad). If you do watch tho look up a trigger warnings guide, the show deals with very dark subject matter
Oh if you want something that have a lot of awesome female characters you should watch fullmetal alchemist brotherhood (and fullmetal alchemist 2003, there's also the manga, which is the best of all three medias but like the bar is high) and jujutsu kaisen. They're both animes with fantastic magic systems and awesome writing tho jjk is still on its very first season. It's very good tho.
i actually got recced revolutionary girl utena on the replies to that ask a bit ago, it definitely sounds like something that'd be right up my alley (and the art style reminds me a lot of magic knight rayearth which i love) so it's going on my list! i intent to catch up on fruits basket soon and then after that i may dive into RGU and see what all the fuss is about =D (although that's been paused for my PGSM rewatch but yknow, we all gotta go back to our roots on occasion)
and i've heard lots and lots of good things about fmab! it's always something that's sort of been in the back of my mind as something to watch, so i'll probably look into that at some point soonish too -eyes- and all i know about jujutsu kaisen is that there's lots of really sexy people and a demon who is also sexy but i've heard that it actually gets pretty intense and is well-written so it's def on my list too
ty for the recs! =DDD

Pitch Me your thing!
HELLO HELLO MY SUNBEAMS. For most every category, there was an impressive turn-out for pitches, so I thought we’d utilize the weirdness of this year’s GIFTENING to give something new a try. The popular vote winner for each category will happen on the first day, but on the second, the winner will be chosen from YOUR PITCHES. Mostly those pitches will be to me. The exception is in Miscellaneous, where you’ll be pitching to my family, because what I want to do and what is most entertaining isn’t necessarily the same thing.
So! How will we do this thing? GLAD YOU ASKED. I’ll link you to a form in a minute with space for one pitch. Once you fill it out, you’ll be asked if you want to do another. There’s no limit to the number of pitches you can send in! But remember that if you submit multiple entries for the same category, you’ll basically be competing against yourself.
NOW WE’VE GOT SOME RULES FOR DOING THIS (which I mostly stole from Holligay, because I have no creativity this year). Please read them carefully! I’ll toss pitches that break any of these, and I’d rather your hard work not go to waste.
Pitch Me is open for your submissions from RIGHT NOW (22 December) through the very last day of this hellyear (31 December) at 11:59pm MT.
The thing you pitch must have come from what was nominated for THE GIFTENING 2020. (Full list of those nominations in every category below the cut on this post.)
Entries must be unsigned! I’m looking to chose based on the pitch alone, regardless of who submitted it.
The pitch itself must be 100 words or less. HAVE PITY ON ME I CAN ONLY CONSUME SO MUCH.
If you’d like to get some help, ideas, feedback, all that good stuff, the Discord is a FANTASTIC resource I encourage you to use.
HERE IS YOUR PITCH SUBMISSION LINK
And, as promised, below the cut you’ll find the list of all the nominees in every category you guys sent in this year. IT’S A LONG LIST HAVE FUN WITH THAT
